About Rivian

Rivian was founded in 2009 before launching all-electric vehicles in 2021. The company currently has two models in its lineup, including a truck and an SUV, with two more in development. Since the brand is still considered a startup, there isn’t a ton of information available on the performance and reliability of its vehicles.

    Reviewed Aug. 19, 2025

Rivian is a young company still trying to get the infrastructure up to support buyers. The car drives well but overall the experience with Rivian has been disappointing. An example was this spring where I called in three times to confirm that the guy that came to service my car could take care of an error message, every time I was promised a callback - none were received. Ed the mobile service person arrived and fixed my window but not the error message. He promised to send the service notes this afternoon, to enable me to set up another service appointment. In line with my expectations of Rivian’s follow up - I received nothing.

Of course the existing service call for was closed, leaving me with no ability to connect to the prior conversation. I can’t even express my frustration. I have waited 2 months to get the car fixed, did follow up to no avail. Any body work is immensely expensive, a minor accident turns into something major. Expensive and takes a long time first to get your car in for service second to get it repaired. We since sold the car and bought another electric from a more experienced car company.

    Rivian models

Because the Rivian brand is relatively new, the company currently offers only two models: an SUV and a truck. Both models are electric and come with stunning exteriors and incredible interiors with large screens.

    Rivian warranty

Rivian includes a new vehicle limited warranty with every R1S and R1T vehicle, which includes comprehensive coverage for up to five years or 60,000 miles on Quad Motor vehicles and four years or 50,000 miles on other configurations. The battery pack systems and drivetrain are covered for eight years and up to 175,000 miles, depending on the build. There is also an eight-year corrosion warranty and a warranty from the tire manufacturer.

Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no CPO warranty offered by Rivian. The factory warranty may transfer to a new owner; the company’s customer service can help you figure out if coverage is transferable.

    Rivian FAQ

    What is Rivian’s best-selling model?

According to a report from Kelley Blue Book, the R1S was Rivian’s best-selling model in the first quarter of 2024; the company sold more than two R1S models for every R1T it sold.

    Are Rivians reliable?

Because the brand is still relatively new, there isn’t a long vehicle history to rate reliability. In 2023, Consumer Reports ranked Rivian 28th out of 30 manufacturers for reliability.

    Are Rivians expensive to maintain?

No, Rivians are not expensive to maintain. A Rivian service adviser told ConsumerAffairs that they require a full inspection and tire rotation every 7,500 miles, which costs about $180. They also require a brake fluid flush every three years and a coolant change every 112,500 miles.

Is an extended warranty worth it on a Rivian?

While there isn’t an extended warranty provided by Rivian just yet, there are other companies that can provide coverage on your EV vehicle when your current protection runs out. However, you won’t need to worry about that for a few years. Rivian vehicles come with a four- to five-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, while the EV battery is covered for eight years.
