2002 Nissan xterra with under 18,000 miles had the front disc brakes warp for overheating. This vehichle does not do a lot of stop and go driving and has never pulled a trailer. This vehichle seldom carries full passenger or cargo loads. Another customer was at the service department with the exact same problem. This may be a wide spread issues!

Dealer is machining the front disc brakes to eliminate the warp prior to major disk failure. This is at customer cost and does not address the root cause of the over heating! The defect, original design or brake material choice from Nissan factory, may lead to catastrophic field failure for families pulling trailers on trips!

Just a heads up on the Xterra gas valve shutter recall. I just took my 2001 Xterra to a local dealership to have the gas shutter valve recall work completed. I was experiencing all the symptoms of the recall but the dealership told me my VIN number did not fall within the time frame Nissan issued the recall for. They removed my gas tank and sure enough I had the deffective OEM part on my vehicle even though I was not sent a recall notice and Nissan did not include that year/VIN in the recall process.

Xterra is junk -- leaking fluid from rear and front axle (5 times). Weather strip falls off back door, paint is bubbling off of trunk, when I tow a small boat the whole car shimmies.

I bought a new '92 Nissan Xterra last August and since then I have had nothing but problems with it. A little time after I purchased it the check engine light came on and was taken in to the shop. They turned the light off and sent me away. Again, a week later it comes on again. Went in and they found the seal to the fuel tank was bad so they had to order the part.

A few months down the road from that problem my brakes start grinding. I took it in for routine oil change and asked to have my brakes looked at because they did not feel right. They sent me away saying my brakes are fine. The problem got worse and the car started to drive funny with a noise coming from the back of the vehicle like the tires were going to fall off. I took it in again and they sent me away. On my way home I knew something was wrong so I called them the same day and the service desk person was extremely rude and tried to tell me the brakes are fine and the type of brakes my car has have a lot of metal.

I didn't believe that so I told her I was going to take it somewhere else and Nissan was going to pay for it. Well then she passes me off to someone else and he also tries to tell me the brakes are fine and nothing is wrong with my car and they should sound like that. Well, that night it got to the point I was scared to drive it because every time I would brake they would grind as they would if the roads were wet and the ABS kicks in.

The next morning on my way in to work the ABS light comes on. I call Nissan immediately and he asked me to drop it off to them. I took in. I get a call that night saying the bearings are bad and the car is too dangerous to drive. I told them I took it in two times for the same problem and they kept sending me away. He said "I hate to say it was an oversight on our part". So he had to order parts. I did some research on my own about the bearings and if there were any other complaints. I found that there was a recall on my vehicle for this problem.

I went to the Bel Air Nissan and asked if there was and they looked it up and said "yes, it is a good thing you found that". It is not my job to find that stuff out. So the third day in the shop i call and they say the parts are in and they are working on it. I didn't hear from them so I called 8:15pm to find out the wrong part came in (axle) and that they need to order the right one and the part wouldn't be in until Monday. So by then they would have had my car for 8 days.

My father called my sales rep and she was very helpful. She got them to call around and they found the part in Washington, DC so they said someone would drive down Friday morning and I would have my car that day. Why couldn't they do that from the beginning? Not once did they call me to tell me what was going on with my car. They promised a free gas fill up and they would clean the inside and out of my car. I picked up the car and there was no gas in it and they only cleaned the outside. I went back in to ask why no gas was put in and they said they were not allowed because they wanted to make sure they had enough for the trucks because of the snow. That just about did it for me.

I just found out there is another recall on my car for the fuel throttle and again no notices. Notices should have been sent out Jan 15th and I haven't received any. A six-month-old car should not be having all these problems. My life was in danger. The tires could have fallen off the vehicle and what would they have said, "sorry we overlooked the problem".

In the first week of owning my Nissan Xterra the wheel had to be replaced. Before I reached 20K miles the rear end went out on my car and I lost a week with my car. The dealership (Boomershine Nissan) did not offer another mode of transportation but instead I was able to borrow a car to go back and forth to work. I have had numerous complaints about the speakers, and the rear window on the passenger side of the vehicle. I was told by Boomershine Nissan that they could not service these types of complaints on Saturdays. I would need to drop my car off during the week to have these things looked at and find other means of transportation.

Finally I have my car at the dealership now for a rattling noise which they tell me if caused by the exhaust pipe bracket. The bracket itself is apparently broken. They do not have any explanation and have not seen this happen in a car this new. They say it is unusual. My problem is that I am out of my 36M mile warranty and I have a serious problem that does not happen in such a new car. I am forced to pay $338.69 out of pocket to have my car fixed. I am concerned that their may be other problems with the vehicle that should not happen at 42M miles.

2002 Nissan Xterra Supercharged. Brochure states: More Xterra Power. Lots of it. And a boost that is immediate (no turbo spool-up lag), consistent and on tap at any altitude. My supercharger, as well as the two others I've driven do not kick in until 3000 RPM's. This, I believe, is false advertising. Been to the local dealership 4 times for this issue, 1st 3 times, no problem found. Last time they told me the Supercharger does not kick in until 3000 RPM's... contradictory of the sales brochure. I have taken time off of work to deal with service appointments and meetings with the Service Manager.

Blown motor in 2000 Nissan Xterra due to sludge in oil. Al West stated lack of oil change, since I had done the changes myself. This is the same as in the article on the Toyota vehicles. I have not been able to drive vehicle for 5 months now. I am having to save the money to replace the engine myself. Nissan Consumer Affairs stated to take to another dealership. However I have to pay for the tow. I have 100,000 mile warranty.

We learned today that my wife's 2000 Nissan Xterra, that had been purchased locally at Al West Nissan, has a blown motor. This should not be a problem, since we have an extended warranty for 100,000 miles (which I paid big money for) and such things like this can happen. However, we are told, the warranty will not cover the cost of the repairs to our vehicle. Their out is, it appears to be owner maintenance neglect. They are trying to imply that we did not change our motor oil, or that we could not prove we changed the motor oil regularly.
They asked for receipts for all the oil changes, even though I change the oil and filter myself, they demanded proof. I explained that I did not save my oil and filter receipts, as I purchase these items at local retail stores. I was never told to keep these receipts, or keep a log. I was told the day we purchased the vehicle to keep the oil changed regularly, which we do. My wife was so proud of her truck that when the mileage wasn't due for a change, she would demand that I change it.
After we had our Xterra for a while, one day before leaving town for a trip, we stopped at a local station for gasoline. As usual, I also checked the oil level and discovered the oil cap was missing. In a hurry, I stopped by Al West Nissan and purchased an oil cap, not knowing what had happened to the other, suspecting that maybe I did not get it on good at the time of the last oil change. I put the new cap on and we were on our way. A few weeks later, I again noticed the oil cap was missing. I again went to Al West and told them I was having trouble keeping the oil cap on. With the new cap, I found the threads on the oil fill neck would not hold the cap tight and would come off easily. The service man insisted that here was no problem.
A few weeks or months later, I had the truck into Al West Nissan for some service work, because there was a noise in the motor. Upon checking the technician noticed that again the cap was missing. Ah, there must be a problem because he found the old cap lodged in the fender well. A few days later I received a call from Al West Nissan explaining that they were going to replace my valve cover to keep the cap from coming off again. Now, they pulled the old valve cover off and replaced it. Not seeing a problem at that time, with sludge build up in the motor, or they did not tell us about it. Or was this just an all of the sudden happening? Well, now here we are with a blown motor and the warranty is no good.
I asked if the information was given to the warranty people about the numerous missing oil filler caps. I was told by the service manager of Al West Nissan that was not a contributing factor to the motor. I explained that if the cap was missing for some time, wouldnt dirt and debris get into the motor? I was told by the service manager of Al West Nissan that there was not anyway dirt and debris could get into the motor through the oil filler spout. No, I am not a rocket scientist, but I know that an opening into an operating motor could and would introduce dirt and debris into the motor.
So, I called another Nissan dealer and spoke to the service technician there. I asked if the cap was missing, could dirt and debris get into the motor. The answer was, that is why they put a cap on there, to keep stuff out. Well, even with this information, I have yet to get resolution.
I contacted Nissan Customer Affairs. I explained the situation, they took a report and said they would look into the matter. I asked how they would look into the matter and they said, they would talk to the dealership. Well, what are they going to say? They failed to warn us that dirt and debris could have got into the motor on the numerous occasions that there was no cap on the oil filler spout! Or that they failed to see the signs of sludge build up in the motor at the time they took the valve cover off! What are they to say, the customer is ultimately responsible, for the condition of the internal workings of the complex machine.

my husband and i just bought a new xterra. it spit gas out of the tank every time we filled it. plus the gauge didn't read full ever.

well we are still paying for a new car that's still in the dealership. they graciously gave us a rental car, but it's not our new car. they still do not know when the part will come in they say it's on major back order. so if this part is messed up on all new xterras then why not recall them? and is there anything we can do about our new car blues?

Purchased a 2000 Nissan Xterra SE July 8, 1999. That same evening we started having problems. One mile from the dealer the service engine soon light came on. Brought into Amity Nissan service. Was told it was not connected properly at the assembly plant. August 8, 1999, oil leak. Nissan service changed rear engine seal, oil leak still detected, they removed and replaced oil pan and gaskets for transmission. August 28, 1999 radio and lcd display shorted out, Amity service installed brand new radio.

September 15, 1999 two screws fell out of the sunroof while being opened, key would not turn in the ignition. No explaination. November 6, 1999 transfer case pops out of low gear into neutral. Service ordered brand new transfer case, no explaination. Rear windshield wiper falls out of arm while in use. Brand new windshield wiper arm ordered. No explaination for defect.

January 12, 2000 front bumper detatching from truck. Amity service said bumper was not fastened correctly to truck frame after fog lights were installed at factory. I have gone back to Massapequa Nissan after every problem requesting a different Xterra. They said they would give us another vehicle car but was requesting more money because the truck I have is now a used vehicle. Approximately after the 4th or 5th problem Nissan North America offered us $2000. towards the purchase of a new Xterra. I feel that is unacceptable considering the I have had nine (9) different manufactuer defects in 6 months. The truck has been in the service center seven (7) times in 6 months.

This is totally unacceptable for a brand new car and a Nissan no less with a good reputation and a reputation for customer satisfaction. This has become an extreme inconvenience for my husand and myself arranging for a car to use for work every time this is in the shop. I purchased an extended warranty because we put a lot of miles on our cars. Included in the extended warranty is use of a loaner car when in service for more than a day. In the seven time it has been in for service, I have had one loaner under extended warranty.

This cannot continue This truck is falling apart piece by piece. What I am looking for is my $7,000 down payment back and purchase a car that I can actually use and not bring to a service center every few weeks and not have pieces of the truck falling off. If I can not be accommodated with my money back, I want a different Xterra with the same loan value and payment value. I have invested enought time and money into this piece of garbage. Nissan has refused this because their policy is if something goes wrong they will repair it under the warranty. There must be some way to protect the consumer. I have been told I do not fall under the lemon law because I have not had the same problem occur 3 times without being repaired. I feel that having 9 different problems is far worse.

Unfortunately, the Lemon Law applies to situations in which the same problem happens over and over. Stacy might be wise to take the $3,000 and swallow some of the loss.
