We purchased a new 2014 Focus in March 2015. We have been in the shop at least four times for the same chattering and scraping transmission problem described by others. We are very disappointed with Ford, with our dealership, and with the condescending attitude of the service people. They say, "it's normal" and "cannot verify the problem" etc. After owning at least three other Fords, we will never purchase another Ford! We are appalled at Ford's lack of concern for owners of this defective product. We will write to our state officials who administer the Lemon Law in Ohio, and to our Attorney General, and we urge others to do the same!

I bought my 2014 Ford Focus car brand new and within 6 months of driving, the automatic manual transmission started slipping and got worse. I took it to the dealer, they told me it just needed a computer update and to drive it for 1,000 miles. Still had issues so I took it back and they said the "jerking" was within Ford parameters. I took it back the 3rd time and they said they needed to replace the clutch. 6 months after that, I started having the same issue happen and took it back. It now needs another replacement. About to be on the 3rd clutch in 36,000 miles and Ford tells me it's "normal".

Good evening. My name is Eric **. I own a Red Ford Focus 2007 4D. I had a serious issue last night 05/27/2016 around 11:30pm. I was driving my car for around 5 minutes from my friend's house who lives in the same neighborhood that I do and then when I was parking it on Ingraham Street, San Diego CA (place of the event), there was smoke coming from the engine. When I noticed the smoke, there wasn't any lights on on my panel indicating any mechanical issues. So, I turned the car off and was getting my stuff from inside when it started to come flames out of the engine, on the right hand side of the car on the front part. As soon as I saw the fire, I started getting my documents and belongings from it, left the car and called 911. The fire got worse and worse, but thankfully the firemen came and controlled the situation.
The car was well maintained and taken care of. I bought it on December 2016 and didn't have any problem with it since then. And the most important thing is that there wasn't any sign on the panel saying that there was a problem with the car. I don't even understand why it happened. I asked the fireman and he said that he didn't identify the source of the accident. There was one car parked in front of my car (Jeep model) that got damaged. I was inside of the car when it all happened, It could've killed me or someone else. I am really thankful that no one got hurt, however I would like to have help from you guys.
I need to know if it is possible to get the car inspected by an authorized Ford employee, because it may be a case of a recall or so. I am still really nervous about what happened and I demand a help from you. I chose ford because of the reliability. I trusted on your cars, but I am afraid now of even staying close to a Ford. So now, i didn't even touch the car, I tried to contact you several times with no answer today and I won't probably have any help until next Tuesday May 31st because of the memorial holiday. I just need an answer as soon as possible. Thank you so much in advance. I am looking forward to hear from you.

I own a 2012 Ford Focus and I have been experiencing numerous problems with the power steering that would go out on me, either as I was driving or as I started the vehicle. Just a few days ago the power steering gave out completely. I attempted to contact the local dealer and I was told "Sorry Ma'am there is no recall on your vehicle. And you did not purchase the extended warranty. This is why you should have purchased the extended warranty. There is nothing we can do except look at your car for the diagnostic fee of $125." I have seen numerous reviews and complaints for this problem on this vehicle. I am amazed that there is not a recall on this knowing the severity of this problem. Or is Ford waiting for someone to die because of this issue?
I am shocked that Ford is aware of this problem and is choosing to ignore it. Leaving their consumers out on the road with an unsafe vehicle. Ford claims to be all about SAFETY and yet they are ignoring the obvious and leaving so many people vulnerable to a fatal accident. How can they claim to know of the problem and recall other cars with the same issue and not recall the 2012 Focus? I feel that this is a serious matter and that something needs to be done as far as a recall so that consumers will be safe out on the road. How long will it take before something is done? This is not first issue with this vehicle. I have had two other issues to be addressed as recall and customer satisfaction. Now there is the issue of the power steering. I hope that there is something done soon before it is too late for a consumer.

I purchased my Ford Focus 2009. In the same year I have had nothing but problems with car locking doors - when I lock the car, it will sometimes open or not. I have had it to the dealer at least six times - they promised to fix it. I finally had to resort to a lawyer and they paid me a small amount for my time and trouble and promised to fix the car. Well it was not fixed properly. The dealer stated they put new locks - I don't believe they did. I would not recommend this year or model of car - it is a total lemon and it is hazardous. What if you were caught on a railroad crossing and could not escape your oh well and what if you were alone and parked your car and locked and could not open the car when you returned to your car - well too bad.

We purchased a new 2013 Focus and from the very first 300 miles plus have had issues. As I type this I am sitting on the side of a highway waiting for this car to decide if it will get me the rest of the way home. The transmission in these cars are junk and never should have been placed in them. It's very dangerous with it going out and leaving you stranded on the side of the highway. FORD needs to take all these cars back and give customers their money back for selling a car that wasn't worth driving off the parking lot!!! And it only got ONE STAR because you have no other choice, you can't pick a 0.

The Ford Focus dual clutch transmission system is appalling. Shortly after the vehicle was purchased, the car began shuddering and grinding, especially when accelerating. I took the car in for repairs, and they reprogrammed the transmission control module. The issue was fixed for a VERY SHORT time, and it started happening again. I was told that the shuddering, jerking and grinding was "normal" for the vehicle. I continued to drive the car and last week, at 77,000 miles, the car would not start. About 75% of the time the car does not start at all, and the display does not show that the car is in gear. I took the vehicle to a local dealership, and they informed me that the transmission control module would need to be replaced, but that the part was on backorder. Ford had issued an extended warranty on the TCM (but it needs to be recalled).
They referred me to Ford Customer Service, who told me that the part would not be available until June 17th. Due to the fact that it was almost the weekend, no one could call me back to let me know if Ford would cover a rental, so I was forced to rent a car to get to and from work. The following Monday, I was informed that Ford denied my request for a rental, even though they admitted, repeatedly, that the part was faulty. The customer service rep admitted that, because it is such a widespread issue, they would not pay for rentals for every person that had the issue. Overall, the experience has been horrific. Ford's "special support center" is a joke, and they offer no support at all, and the customer service team has no authority other than repeating "I'm sorry" over and over again.

I purchased my 2013 Ford Focus SE in October of 2012. As soon as I got it home I started experiencing issues with the transmission slipping, grinding, lurching, and delayed engagement. I was told this was normal and it would adjust, well it never did. In October 2015 the transmission failed completely on a major highway. I was in the center lane of the highway and the transmission simply shut down. My daughter and I narrowly escaped being crushed by a tractor trailer. The transmission control monitor and clutch were both replaced following the incident. However, the transmission still slips and grinds.
Yesterday, I experienced something new and different. While driving to work, I started to smell gasoline and my car starting to run roughly and the engine light came on. I had it towed to the dealer and was informed that a valve on the fuel tank was stuck open and the fuel tank was collapsing as I was driving it. I could have been killed by this car. It is still at the dealership and I really don't want it back. This vehicle is a menace, yet Ford will not issue a recall or replace the transmissions or fuel systems in them. Stay away from this vehicle, far away.

I purchased my 2014 Ford Focus 1/1/16. When driving at slow speeds and always if accelerating at 10mph the car jerks and sputters. I took it back to the Ford Dealer and had what they said was an adjustment due to a recall. Didn't fix anything, took it in again and the answer is its the design due to a 5 speed within an automatic transmission it has to adjust itself. This car Will NOT accelerate when a light turns red turning left and I need to get out of the way, it jerks and sputters, same problem at any stop. My concern is that if I can't accelerate to get out of the way I'M GOING TO GET HIT at a light, a stop, on the freeway. Ford told me that's the way all of them drive. This is a daily occurrence since I purchased the car. So very sorry that I purchased this car. Will never again purchase a Ford product.

My daughter is in the Navy and has been without her car for almost a year now. She was just home on leave and was going to take her newly "fixed" car back (after it had already been BACK in the shop 3 times) but it left her stranded. How is Ford getting away with not replacing these transmissions when they clearly cannot fix them? She started taking her car in to be serviced almost immediately only to be told there was nothing wrong with it. Then she all the sudden gets an extended warranty because of the faulty transmission? Ford obviously doesn't back their product and they really don't care about their consumer. They have their money so why should they?

Ford refuse to repair under warranty - charged me $2,500 to fix. Claim it is just wear. I have driven manuals for years and despite having the cars for over 5 years have never had a problem with clutch. Ford care were rude and after telling us it's our problem refused to take any more calls. Would like to hear from anyone else who has had similar problem.

My 2013 Ford Focus transmission is an unpredictable little monster. No problems that I noticed until about 10,000 miles when it because to shudder, jerk and "slip" just when I needed it to engage - accelerating into a merge, going from level ground to a street on a hill, passing and even in pulling out of the driveway. Until yesterday the dealer reps acknowledged the problems but now, today, the rep used the word, "Normal". Well it may be normal for this transmission but when normal is dangerous then something should be done. For example, it's normal for rattlesnakes to be poisonous, however when there is a nest of them in a school yard and a kid could get bit... Something should be done to remove the danger.

My wife and I had our son a 2012 Ford Focus which had 46000 miles on it in March 2015. Had the car for 2 weeks and had to have it towed due to transmission problem. The Ford garage had for about a month before even looking at it. The garage called and said that the clutches had been replaced and installed backwards, then a day later called back and said that the bolts were just loose and they had tightened them up.
1 year later had to take it back to another garage for transmission problem. Was told that it was the clutches and that they were on back order for 12 weeks. They called a few days later and said, "We found some extra parts in the back to fix the vehicle". After another week they call and say it is done. Transmission shifting good but the engine now has a miss and it is losing compression in number 1 cylinder and want to know if I want them to do a compression test. I said sure. So now they are telling me it needs a new engine at $5000 and Ford does not want step in and help with the cost. NEVER WILL I BUY ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT.

I purchased a Ford Focus 2013, new, from the dealer 3 years ago. By far the worst vehicle I have ever owned. The radio stopped working around 50,000 - just in time for no warranty. Not only does it not work but makes loud and annoying popping sound even when the vehicle is off. Cannot afford $800 for a new radio so I have to drive with ear plugs at times. It is impossible to fix the smallest things because you cannot get behind the dashboard. Fuse box is hidden, very difficult to locate. Cannot reach the glove box comfortably and all of the items fall out due to the poor design. Oh but thanks a lot Ford for the 13 settings on my windshield wipers - that is much more important than a working radio. Oh and the transmission - shaking and shimming from day one. Screw Ford.

I bought a 2014 Ford Focus in Nov of 2013. Within months I began to have problems with the transmission just like all the others who have posted here. It is now waiting to have the third (3rd) transmission put into it. The car has less than 18,000 miles on it and has already been in the shop for this over 12 times. I finally had enough and googled Lemon Law PA (my state) and was connected with some very nice attorneys who took my case, filed the papers and are now taking care of it. I will not even have to pay them as they charge Ford for the legal fees and nothing will come out of whatever settlement I receive. If you are from my state I will gladly give you their names. If you are not then google Lemon Law (your state) and find someone who will help you to do the same. We pay huge money for our cars and we need to demand they do right by us.

It was about a week later that the same problem has started happening again. So frustrating. Not really happy and have been a loyal Ford customer for many years.

Purchased Ford Focus hatchback 2013. It's been nothing but trouble regarding the transmission since that day. It's been in the shop I would say now multiple times for same issue. The issue is the transmission. When you slow down and accelerates it shudders, jumps and stutters and jerks. Every time I went to the shop FORD tell me the same story. First time they replaced some seals and after that it's been nothing but updating software and telling me go away now and drive it for 5k miles and it will learn how you drive. What the hell??? Learn how I drive and if someone else wants to drive what do they do?? It's now at 40k miles and was in the shop 6 months ago. They said the car was performing the way it was designed! What the hell? You mean you had designers of this junk? Very disappointed in Ford Motor Company and Ford service. I have learned my lesson and Ford has lost a customer.

I have owned Ford cars for the last 15 years, but my 2012 Ford Focus SE will be the last Ford I will ever buy. After owning a Ford Edge that had transmission problems from day one that Ford did nothing about, I looked forward to getting into a new smaller car with better gas mileage and a transmission that actually worked. I love my car but again I have transmission problems, yes Ford extended the warranty but they have their service departments put band aids on the issues until the cars are out of warranty and you're out of luck.
After speaking with a customer service representative at Ford, who quoted the extended warranty, told me it doesn't matter that the car was serviced for the same problem before the warranty ran out. Now there is no warranty, and who wouldn't allow me to speak with a supervisor, I have decided that Ford Motor Company is not a company I want to do business with ever again! I know I'm only one person but I can't be the only person having these issues. If this is how they are going to treat a loyal consumer I would rather ride a bike to work than drive a Ford.

I purchased a used 2014 Ford Focus Hatchback in December 2014. As soon as I left the dealership I began to feel it "jump." I called and was told that was normal because of the type of engine that it was. After a few weeks I still felt that jerking motion when I would accelerate, especially during stop and go traffic. I called the Ford dealership and was told that was "normal". "The car has to get used to the way I drive?" What if someone else is driving it, that doesn't make sense to me. I was told that after a certain amount of miles it would stop, if not I could go in and the mechanic will manually reset the module.
Four months later it is still happening. It feels at times as if the car is going to accelerate forward without me being able to control it. I have an appointment with Ford to check the transmission. I wish that I would have read all the reviews I found before hand. I would have never purchased it. I am scared when I drive. I have three children. I don't even know if I will be able to trade it in. I don't have money to have any repairs done for a fairly new car that I just purchased. My coworker has the 2012 version and has been in 4 times to fix the same problem. Why would Ford keep putting out cars with the same issue if you see all of these problems that people are having. What am I going to do if I am expected to pay for this, the warranty expired. I would never recommend this car to anyone. I really hope to get rid of it. This was supposed to be my last car. I am only 4 payments in!!

I purchased the 2012 Ford Focus in Sept 2015. I purchased as a certified used car with 73,000.00 miles. I was charged $10,500.00 from the dealership. Within 3 days, the car wouldn't go into park. It would say "transmission failure - service now." I contacted the dealership, and they had to have the car towed to the dealership where it got a new transmission computer. 3 weeks later, the car kept beeping saying "transmission not in park" while I was in drive. I advised the dealership and brought the car in. They said they ran the car and couldn't duplicate the message, so they said there was nothing they could do. The car now shakes and shimmies like crazy when in low gear and accelerating.
I am terrified of this car. I can not afford to make a $250.00 a month car payment and also be expected to put money in the car to fix. I do not trust the car since it misses when driving on the highway. The car has also shook and vibrated since I got the car, and I have brought it back 3 times for this. The dealership said it was the wheel weights, so they "fixed," but the problem was still there. I brought back saying it didn't help, and then they told me I need new tires (which I had to pay for) and the problem is still there. I contacted a transmission mechanic shop, and they stated the car shaked violently because of the transmission. I don't want this car! I have always been a Ford lover, but I will never buy from Ford again. In addition... I have talked 2 other people out of buying a Ford since they were going to buy the new Focus. After hearing my story, one bought a Chevy instead... The other bought a Toyota.

We bought a 2012 used with 22,000 miles on it. Didn't notice it didn't come with cruise control. Really. Our fault. Then within about a year and a half, the black foam pieces on the rear shelf had rotted out! I have never seen that. Then we started noticing vibration at low speeds in stop and go traffic. Transmission module reprogrammed under recall. Then the transmission module had to be replaced as car would not shift and go. Thank goodness we had the 100,00 mile warranty. Then the engine control module failed just outside the warranty. $850 IIRC. I have never had a car have this much major problems. Meanwhile, my 2005 Honda Pilot just keeps humming along at 248,000 miles. Tires, brakes, OFL. Timing chain at 100,000 miles. One catalytic converter at 235,000 miles. After experiencing knee pain during the 1st year of driving the car, I didn't even think to blame the console having a shape that, if you're the unfortunate leg length, eroded some tissue on my knee. I thought the pain might have been from the exercycle at the gym. At the time I was spending a considerable time in my car, driving for Uber, which keeps you more distracted than just casually driving as you don't know where you're going to turn. You have to operate the app, talk to the rider, etc. So the constant contact was not as apparent to me most of the time. But NOW, as the pain was getting worse, I realized it wasn't from the gym.
So I had some X-Rays done. According to the X-rays, and the doctors (a top professional orthopedic surgeon) there is absolutely no sign of arthritis in my entire body, except at the exact spot the center console hits my knee. And the meniscus has been not torn as with a sports injury, but ERODED and developed a cyst. I am in a lot of pain. On a 10 scale, it ranges from about 3 to about 9. The 9 being momentary if just the right conditions apply. Two doctors have said it is possible for the console to do this, and my X-rays prove that even though I am 66, my joints are like that of a 35 yr old. I am writing, besides in general, in hopes that an attorney reading your site, may have heard of something like this with a previous client, or from another atty he/she knows.

I have a 2012 Ford Focus titanium that I purchased new. This afternoon I arrived home, pulled into the driveway and turned off the engine. After turning off the engine I spent about 45 seconds in the car with the door closed gathering my things. I opened the door and stepped out and spent about another 15 seconds gathering a few more things and leashing my dog. Before I could close the door the car started making an extremely loud banging noise. It sounded like it was coming from the dash or underneath the car.
I've heard engines knocking in cars before so I know what that sounds like. THIS SOUNDED NOTHING LIKE THAT. For one thing it was much much louder and a different quality of sound and it didn't seem to be coming from under the hood plus the car was sitting quietly with the engine off for at least a minute before it started. There wasn't any smoke or smell just the loud noise and I ran to the front porch because I thought it was going to explode. The noise lasted for about 20 seconds. My husband got home about an hour later and checked everything out under the hood and under the car and drove it and everything seemed fine and it didn't happen for him.
This is not the first time this car has scared me. Twice (not recently) it stalled on me while driving on the freeway and had to be towed to a Ford dealer. The first time they could not find anything wrong except to say my gas gauge showed 32 miles to empty and perhaps I needed to keep more gas in it though it started for them and they did not add any gas to it. The interesting thing is it started after being pushed manually but the dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong with the transmission or anything else. A few days after I got it back from the dealership it stalled again while driving on the freeway, this time a different dealership did find something wrong with the computer that regulates the transmission. It hasn't stalled again since then but it frequently acts like it's going to. The transmission shakes and rattles so bad I have to apologize anytime I have a passenger in my car.
Bottom line this car is a piece of crap and Ford has buried their head in the sand. I had it in for an oil change a couple of weeks ago and they told me it needed a recall job done - again something with the computer so I let them do it and afterwards it was shaking more than usual so I called and told them the recall work had actually made the shaking worse. They told me the computer was wiped clean and has to get used to my driving habits again. They said it might take up to 5,000 miles of driving to reset all the way and smooth out. (Yep 5K miles). They said the car has to get used to my "driving style" again. The problem is worse when my husband drives it because his "driving style" is different and it confuses the computer (according to the dealership) so the car is in a constant state of shaking and hesitating when either of us drive it.

These should be bought back and not sold back to customers. Corporate don't care. Ford don't care. I asked nice several times and they said no. They would trade it but it would flip me 19000 dollars. I have owned this car 11 months. It is a 2015 Ford Focus. As others have said with previous year models the transmission is ridiculous. Supposedly Ford said they fixed the transmission problems for the 2015 model and it didn't happen to my car. Ford and the dealer where I bought it offer no solution. The dealer I'm taking it to soon to see if they can do anything with the shuddering, jerking, etc. said that the dealer selling this car should have informed me. They didn't and therefore now I am dealing with a vehicle that is dangerous. A couple times after starting from a stop, it almost just came to a stop despite my foot on the gas pedal, both times I thought I was getting rear ended. The dealer I'm taking it to says they will do their best to "make it better" but the reality is, this crap transmission is what it is. Someone wanted to know why there hasn't been a class action suit against Ford.. That is also my thought.

When driving I have to be so cautious because I never now if it will fail and not move. This has happened while turning across traffic narrowly avoiding an accident by good skill of the other driver. My car has been in for a fix twice and now they tell me it can take months to get the new clutches. I too have a worthless car and still paying for it. I don't think these cars should be allowed on the road. People are going to be killed and Ford better be ready for the repercussions.

We test drove it on a wet night, I thought I just hit a wet area on road. Salesman said nothing of tranny and how it operates, as we took it home the next night it would slip, very noticeable. We called they said "bring it in." The service writer said "yes there are issues with all of these." I about flipped. They knew all the time... ALL THE TIME. I wanted my money back, they said I could pick out another. So we looked at a 2015. Going to see if bank would do a switch over. I'm a smart guy. I was told that's the behavior of the transmission, but there has been a repair every time I have taken my car to the service department? I sent my letter to the corporate office requesting a buyback of my vehicle, but had no success. Each state has different stipulations to when a car is considered a lemon, so Google Lemon Law for your state. I am now waiting on a response from the attorney general's office about my consumer complaint claim against Ford Motors.
Please, file a proper complaint with your state to get this issue resolved. It is sad when the service men make statements like "More people need to complain because this has been going on for two years." Also, I am going to speak with an attorney to start a class action lawsuit against Ford Motors. I know this is energy taxing, but your support is needed to protect us as consumers.

We bought our teenage daughter a 2012 Focus one month ago. It had a little over 100,000 miles on it. The first time she filled it up with gas she packed it out, but the gas hand only read three-quarters of a tank and never went beyond that. She noticed that the gas hand would fluctuate a good bit. We took it to the dealer where we bought it (not a Ford dealership). They looked at it and said since it has a capless gas tank that it cannot be packed out with gas and to only fill it to the point that the gas pump clicks. Okay, fine. We did that with the next fill up and the very same thing happened again. Two weeks after this, the car stalls on her in the middle of a very busy intersection. The car registered a half tank of gas so we didn't know what the problem was. This time, we took it to the Ford dealership. Come to find out it broke down because it had no gas.
They kept it for almost a week and we were told that the gas tank is deformed and that it needs a fuel pump, a fuel sensor and something else at a cost of $1500. We bought an extended warranty, which will not cover it. I asked them, "Should this not be covered by a recall?" And I was told yes but that a recall had not been done for this. (He even had the nerve to tell me that Ford didn't like to eat the cost of having to pay for recall issues.) Apparently, there was an issue with the Ford Fusion with the exact same thing.
I asked who we needed to contact at Ford to file a complaint and was given a number. We took it back to the dealership where we bought it and they were going to try again to get the extended warranty company to pay for the repair, which again was to no avail. They then got the used car manager and dealership owner involved. The dealership owner called the extended warranty company and they are now paying for the repairs. I wonder how many people will be stranded or possibly killed before Ford recalls these cars and fix the issue. NEVER again will I buy a Ford product, much less even look at one.

My dad and I purchased a 2014 Ford Focus for my 16-year old daughter from AutoNation, Gulf Freeway, Houston and immediately noticed the hesitation in acceleration, the shuttering, the "dead spot" in the accelerator. We got the first recall notice on the fuel pump, was told by (and still getting the run around) that the fuel pump recall fix kit was unavailable. I asked that the fuel pump be replaced and was flat refused that option by Auto Nation Gulf Freeway, Houston, Texas.
I took the car in for the second recall notice (transmission software) and got the car back with no noted change in the performance, car still hesitates BAD. Complained bitterly to Ford AutoNation where we purchased the car, to no avail. I finally figured out that they refuse to replace the fuel pump because they know full well it won't help the problem. My daughter has Asperger's and driving is enough of a challenge for her without the constant lurching, dragging and hesitating of acceleration.
It won't be long before someone dies as a result of FORD's derelict stance on recognizing and addressing this as a real problem, and not just a matter of educating customers. Ford needs to confess to the crappy idea it is to utilize the same transmission for standard and automatic transmissions - all run by a computer. It's a design flaw, not a matter of educating the 1000's and 1000's of bitter, dissatisfied customers. It's my understanding that I couldn't sell this car even if I wanted to, because all dealers recognize the 2014 Focus for the dog it is. Where does that leave a single mom with a daughter with Autism spectrum disorder??? Funny that they didn't use this wonderful dual duty tranny in their beloved Mustang!!!

Just like so many thousands, or many more, have wrote on dozens of websites, including this one, I, too, have a Focus with major transmission issues. I bought my 2013 Focus w/ 27,000 miles on it this past summer, Aug 2015. Seemed like a great car, little more than I wanted to spend but it was the Titanium version, which is loaded with amenities, and after trading in my 2003 Mazda Protege because of widespread frame rust and one of the rear springs and strut had broken due to the rust, I had to limp the car to the nearest dealership.
My mom had passed away and it was the only dealership near where her retirement home was. Bad timing as I live near a busy main road w/ tons of different dealerships along it, including another Ford/Mazda dealership. I have always been a Ford owner, with the exception of buying the brand new 2003 Mazda, but since Ford/Mazda are in collaboration and share parts on many cars, it was a good deal, but it was 13 years old from production date and I had no choice when the spring/strut broke.
Anyway, I am pretty observant of cars even though most are not really serviceable by yourself any longer. I noticed the rear brake discs we're on the rusty side and I could see an impression of the brake pad on the rotors, so when I drove I assumed stupidly that the rear brakes were dragging a bit when I took off from a stop. I was in a pinch and couldn't get to a computer, otherwise, I wouldn't own this car. But, I figured the Focus had been around since 2000, and a super popular car, how could I go wrong? I did find out the source of the shudder when taking off in 1st gear after reading all the reviews of the transmission on the a Google search, but I have more or less gotten used to the slight shudder when starting from a stop, and also stop and go driving is a real pain with that shudder since I do live in a busy metro area in Michigan, but still I could deal with it if it stayed the way it was.
So, fast forward to January 5, 2016. Just like any other day, I got into the car to head out to work, and to my surprise and horror (truly) the car not only had the shudder much worse in 1st gear, it was accompanied by a loud grinding noise, apparently from these infamous clutch packs, and then a rough 2nd gear switch, accompanied by louder grinding and major shuddering, it was bouncing like mad, then it couldn't seem to find 3rd gear, and proceeded to rev up about 500 rpm on the tachometer, a quite sudden surge, then gears 4,5 and 6 seemed ok. I rarely get to the 6th gear as the freeways, when I use them, are usually running a bit slow. So, just overnight, a simple 1st gear shudder turned into a nightmare for driving this car. I simply don't want to drive it, and I paid a hair over $17,000 for it just 5 months ago.
So, I took it to the dealership closest to me (not the one I bought it from, they are 30 miles away on the opposite side of the city) and the service advisor was very nice and they were aware of the problems and she got me in yesterday, 1-7. They reprogrammed the PCM and TCM modules, just like so many others have had done, but it failed pre-test and post-test for the shuddering. They put on a waiting list for the clutch and seals kit but said it would be at least mid-March to early April before they would be in and told me to come get the car, that it was safe to drive until then, just a nuisance. Granted, she was really nice about it, and gave me no trouble and Ford authorized the repairs, but from what I've read also, this fix usually fails.
So, I get to drive a bucking, surging, noisy car w/ just shy of 30K miles on it during the cold, snowy winter, and we get a lot of snow and ice here. I am truly at a loss for words. Gee, can't just go to Toyota or Nissan and try to trade it, I'm sure all other dealerships are very aware of the transmission problems with the 2012-15 Focuses and Fiestas and the trade-in value, if they even took it, would be a tiny bit of what I just paid for it in August. I can't afford to pay any more either. Then again, if any salesman drove it from another dealership and felt what I feel, they probably wouldn't take it anyway. For sure, this is the biggest (and most costly) mistake I've made in 43 years, 27 of them driving and buying cars, in my life.

I just put my 2012 Ford Focus in the shop due to "intermittent symptoms of loss of transmission engagement while driving, no-start, or a lack of power". The dealer just called and stated "yes, that is the problem, but also the clutch at a cost of $2295.00." Oh yes, there is a warranty at 100k but I have 103k. Yep 3k more than the warranty. I have had problems with this car since 10k miles. It has been reprogrammed 2x and I have brought it in 2 other times and stated it has a rattling noise at switching gears at 10-20 mph and then at 55 mph. It still shuddered but not as often. Per the service manager "this is normal in these cars". I have the paperwork. As I stated to the service manager today, the clutch would not have gone bad at 103k miles if all this time it was not having problem shifting which wore out the clutch. She said "yes, but Ford considers the computer program (below) warranty different than clutch problem."
I have a car that resell is $5500 but I have to pay $2295 to sell it. May be better to junk it for tax write-off. I had a 2009 Ford Focus and handed down to my son 2.5 years ago. It did not have the "manual/automatic transmission". I had no problems with it which is why I bought another one. This has been bunch of crap. Even when idling the car vibrates and has so many rattles. It is embarrassing when I have customers ride with me. I am now 1 week with no car and first told 2-3 days. Then called after a week and was told "no it takes 1.5-2 weeks to obtain a clutch." Good thing this car is paid off. I am not looking back. I made a $25k mistake and will never go back to a Ford due to how Ford has handled (rather NOT handled) this problem.
The warranty for 150,000 miles I referred above is: Ford is extending the warranty coverage on the DPS6 Automatic Transmission Control Module (TCM) to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first. This extended warranty coverage will address intermittent symptoms of loss of transmission engagement while driving, no-start, or a lack of power. If a vehicle has already exceeded either the time or mileage limits, this coverage will last through September 30, 2015. Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners.

Of course when calling the dealer who happily took over $1000 to fix the TCM they tell me they can't confirm that the same problem is causing this problem. Three days ago the car wouldn't go into reverse, and still won't, all before the "overheating" warning. I am at a loss for what to do since it seems Ford is well aware of these issues and does NOTHING about it. Obviously the dealer would to "service" my car again, I just wonder if they have a "boneyard" for it when I can't afford the repairs.

So, after having only owned Toyota Corollas previously, I decided to reward Ford with my business because I could see they were doing some innovative things with cars and trying to make American cars competitive again. I did my research and at the time, the Ford Focus was getting good reviews from various car rating sources. I went to the lot, and really like the body style of the Focus. I drove it and didn't feel anything out of the ordinary. But once I really started driving it, I began to feel the same issues so many others have complained about: a grinding noise, a shudder on acceleration from a stop, and then it started to sound like it wasn't really getting in gear when I would try to accelerate. My RPMs would spike but no pickup.
The car is a 2014 and has 22k miles and yeah, I'm scared to drive it. It is in the shop right now where they are late doing the work. I'm willing to accept that the manual transmission won't feel the same as the automatic I'm used to, but as the shuddering and acceleration problems have been getting worse, I am really concerned. I have buyers remorse. Car is still pretty, though.

I bought a new 2014 Ford Focus in October of 2013. Within 3 months, I started having the same problems that are already well documented (shuddering, slow acceleration and not being able to find the right "gear"). I took it to the dealership twice to have the computer reprogrammed, both of which helped for about a week. Finally, after the third trip to the dealership they told me I needed a new clutch. The clutch was on back order for two months! With all of these problems, I and many others, feel the car is not safe to drive (peruse the internet for numerous stories to support this claim). When I told the service manager at my dealership about my disappointment that I had to wait another two months to continue to drive an unsafe car, he laughed. Just the reaction I wanted! Now I feel better!
I got the new clutch installed. The very next day, while sitting in stop and go traffic for a "Drive-thru" Christmas lights display (where I could not pull over, back up or otherwise get out of the way because it was a single lane queue of cars going one way), I got a warning message on my dash stating "Transmission Overheating-Please Pull Over". I obviously couldn't because of where I was. So I just kept the car running and creeping along with all the other cars. A few minutes later, I got another warning message on my dash stating "Transmission too hot - Wait 5 minutes". Again, there was nothing I could do except keep creeping along. When I went to accelerate (slowly), the car had NO power.
It felt like I was stuck in mud or snow where the wheels were spinning very fast but the car was barely moving. And this was on dry level pavement. I was panicked! All the cars stopped moving for a few minutes to let a tour bus through. And then I got another message on my dash stating "Transmission OK" and then the car was fine. I called my dealership the very next Monday and they said, "Oh, don't worry about it; you're still in the break in period for your new clutch and that might happen". Are you serious? Getting a complete loss of traction and acceleration and I'm not supposed to worry about it?
I am so tired of Ford and it's dealerships downplaying such a serious problem. Thank God that this car is only a lease. And when my lease is up (if not before then) and going to run as fast as I can away from Ford and NEVER go near Ford again. Ford has handled this TERRIBLY!! They know there is a problem (look around on this site and the internet). They refuse to do anything about it. I just hope no one is seriously hurt because of Ford's negligence. To all of the people at Ford, I ask you this question: Would you, knowing what you know about the Focus and all of its problems, would you be willing to put yourself and your family in a stock Ford Focus (without any replacement clutches, etc.) and feel safe driving it?
I have written three business-like, professional letters to Ford and to my local dealership. I have not received any acknowledgment from any of them. Ford's plan is to bury their heads in the sand and hope this problem goes away or to deny any problem exists at all. Time to wake up and smell the class action lawsuits, Ford, before this really becomes messy. Stay away from Ford!! Faulty products happen, that is understandable. But, denying your faulty product is, in fact, faulty and putting people's safety at risk is incomprehensible.

2013 was a big year for me. I graduated from University and moved to North Jersey to begin an amazing career. I needed a new car and wanted to ensure I supported an American company. I had respect for Ford as it was a well known brand that is even in US history books. I was leaving my family in North Carolina and needed a new dependable car, so I wouldn't have to worry about transportation in a state without immediate family. Therefore I bought a brand new 2013 Ford Focus. I write to you today to express my extreme disappoint in the product I purchased. In the past several months I have had to have my car serviced over 5 times without any resolution to the problems. Each time, the check engine light has turned on less than 3 days after Ford services and returns the vehicle to me.
In fact Ford held my car for nearly 4 weeks straight during 1 of those 5 service events while I continued to make loan, insurance, and parking subscription payments, yet the issues still persisted. It is unbelievable to me that a car barely two years old has significant engine problems of this caliber. Unfortunately this letter is not only produced from my frustrations with the product itself, but also how poorly the dealerships and customer care teams have treated me. I have yet to receive a clear answer about the source of the problem and the dealership has not produced receipts after multiple requests. I would at a minimum like to read for myself what the problem was, and what was done in an attempt to resolve it. They even charged me $250 for a deductible and a new battery. It is also unbelievable that the manager at the dealership wanted me to pay for a portion of the rental car, and gave me attitude as if I was the problem.
I tried my best to be patient as I believed Ford would take care of it. It is your vehicle, and your trained mechanics so I had every reason to believe it would get a high level of service and be resolved. However, at every turn I am treated as if the car breaking down is my fault and there is visible attitude. Several attempts to contact the Ford Customer care team have gone unanswered. Moreover I do not feel safe in this vehicle. The car completely shut down three times without any warning: (1) once in the middle of an extremely busy intersection very close to the George Washington Bridge into New York City while it was pouring rain. (2) on another extremely busy route in New Jersey. (3) While on an extremely busy road in Brooklyn, NY during my Thanksgiving vacation. I was very lucky to have been able to move the car to safety at that moment. This was after two associates reassuring me the car was okay to drive.
My passengers and I could have been killed in the wrong situation driving in the NYC metro. Imagine if I had been on a major highway going 65mph and the car shut off with no brake lights and no power steering. I have missed several days of work. I have had to cancel my travel plans during my Thanksgiving holiday ruining my vacation. I have been charged sizable rental car fees. I have been charge by Ford several hundred dollars to fix my car. Yet there is no resolution. There aren't even explanations. I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect a newly purchased, now 2 year old car to not breakdown at this level. I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect Ford Customer Care team to return a call from a customer who is in distress. I don't believe it is unreasonable to expect your car to be fixed after the dealership holds it for nearly 30 consecutive days. I don't believe it is unreasonable to expect to be treated with a little respect.
Ford has lost my business, my trust, and respect for a lifetime. In fact, my family owns a business and is looking to purchase pickup trucks from your company. Now we are all saying NO to Ford because my experience is really the last straw for our entire family. I am amazed by the low quality of Ford vehicles and the customer service. I put my life in your hands by driving your vehicle each day and it is clear to me that it was not manufactured with my safety in mind. It is also clear to me that Ford doesn't at all care about its customers. I write this letter in hopes that Ford can restore some honor in what it means to be made in America. Your profits are built on people like me and my family who buy your product. That is the big difference between Ford and companies who earn great respect, loyalty and recognition, they actually value and care for their customers. My experiences shows me that clearly I am not valued by Ford.

The part was back-ordered and I was without a car for two weeks. A little over a month later my daughter was turning onto a busy street when the driver door flew wide open. It is currently in the shop being repaired. I will give this credit to the dealer. They offered to cover $250 of the $550 bill of the first door. I am not sure what they will do with this new door if anything. I have absolutely no confidence in the other two doors, which means I have no confidence in my daughter's safety in the vehicle. My question is, why have these door latches not been recalled? They have recalled them on the Fiesta, the Fusion and one Lincoln vehicle.
I traded in a 2005 Ford Focus which never gave me any problems in the 10 years I owned it. That car created in me a loyalty to Ford, but I must say that that loyalty is almost as good as gone as I seriously regret buying these two cars. Both of these 2012 Focuses are having constant problems. The other Focus I bought has already had to spend over a week in the service center to get a new fuel pump, gas tank assembly, and O2 sensors, and the check engine light is on again within a week of getting it back. The only thing that could possibly restore my faith in Ford would be if they went above and beyond the call of duty in customer service. So far, that is not something I am experiencing.

I purchased a 2013 Focus in Feb 2013, two months after my purchase my wife started complaining about the shifting of the transmission. Upon her visit To Hollingsworth Ford in Baton Rouge, La. she was told that the control module needed to be updated and that the shudder in the shifting was normal. The update seemed to be a short term fix because it started happening again. So when I took the car in for the oil change I spoke with the service writer about the issue again and I was told that the car had to learn our driving habits as well as there was a service bulletin out on the car for the oil seals and the control module. I asked to schedule a time to bring it in to have work done and was told that they would repair it when it became a bigger issue.
Well, lo and behold, that day came when I was going home from work at midnight, I was entering Interstate 10 east bound on a uphill approach onto the Mississippi river bridge when my car lost its transmission. The rpm's revved to 5,000 and the car lost its momentum. I went from 60 mph to 35 mph and barely made it over the bridge. On my attempt to make it home the car shook violently slipping in and out of gear and it actually gave me a transmission overheating message twice which said to pull over and wait the telling me when it was okay to drive again. I notified the dealership of what happened and dropped it off for the repair. The repair that was done three months ago I thought was a success due to the fact the control module was replaced and it shifted better than it did when new did not fix the problem.
While traveling on the interstate once again my wife went to accelerate and the rpm's revved up again and the car did not increase in speed and the shuddering has returned while up shifting and down shifting. A warning to those who think replacing the control module or getting it updated will fix your issues- it won't.I am currently dealing with the dealership about my current issue and they are telling me that the control module they replaced three months ago needs to be updated again.

I bought my 2012 Ford Focus with 6 miles on it. After the first month I started to notice the engine shudder while driving. The cars feel as if it is going to stall while driving. I have been dealing with this problem for over 3 years. The transmission on this car is terrible. I took it to four different dealers to be fixed and they all told me the same thing; that there was nothing wrong with the car, and that it was my driving that was the problem. I also notice 3 months after purchase that my cruise control stopped working. It would not even turn on. It was finally replaced after multiple attempts to get Ford to fix the problem.
A few weeks after the replacement it stopped working again. The cruise control has not worked at all the last two years. I bought a brand new car hoping to not have problems and this has turned out to be the biggest waste of money and I am now stuck in this car, if I trade it in I will still have negative equity. Buying this car has been a terrible mistake and Ford continues to sell the Ford Focus while not fixing the problem. I feel that this is something Ford needs to make right for the thousands of people who now own a brand new piece of junk.

I bought a brand new 2012 Focus SE and in the first six months it was in the shop due to the shudder in the transmission, which I found out later was the "upgraded" clutch. The car would shake so bad that I thought the transmission was coming out! The car now has been in the shop either to "reprogram" the transmission, clean the clutch and change the seals or replace the clutch all together. It is right now in the shop for a new clutch but I have to go and pick it up until they are able to receive the new clutch from Ford! Guess what... The clutch is on BACK ORDER!!!
This car only has 55K miles on it and I am so fed up with constantly having problems. I went to the mountains and the transmission wasn't able to downshift going up the inclines and again the entire car shook. If someone stops in front of you to turn and you are in traffic and have to get out of the way quickly... Drive a different car! It is just not going to happen in this LEMON of a vehicle!!! I would not buy another one of these vehicles ever again and I would tell everyone I know to steer clear as well!!! Plain ridiculous!!!

Bought a 2014 Ford Focus with only 26,000 miles on it. The transmission is JUNK. Do not buy the 2014 Ford Focus. Took it to the dealership and they say it needs a new clutch. How can an automatic car with only 26000 miles on it need a new clutch? As I search around on the internet I see this is a widespread problem with the newer Focus's. Shame on Ford for trying to save a buck in changing the transmissions. I had a 2006 Focus and I put 147,000 miles on with never a problem. Why change a good thing??? Because some nitwit engineers sit around a table and try to come up with new ideas to save a couple of dollars and charge us a fortune on cars and repairs. No more Fords for me.

I got my 2011 Focus Certified Pre-Owned. It shudders and RPMs drop dangerously low while stopped so much that the car has stalled twice now. Luckily it starts right back up but I am always very nervous it won't. Spoke to my dealership that sold it to me and they said it's a common issue. The Automator goes out. It's a manual transmission apparently with an Automator on it to shift through the gears. I've gotten a trans flush to no avail.
Also, the car jerks when accelerating. I feel as if it might be the gears slipping. Happens more when it's wet outside and more frequently when I am on the highway. Speaking of wet, the tires spin when the ground is wet, and when there's snow. No traction at all!! I have brand new all-season tires and they do nothing for me! I thought Ford would have sorted out all their issues. It's amazing: my 95 civic with 225000 miles never had any issues for the 60000 miles I put on it. I want it back :(.

I am 72 years old. I needed to obtain a new car. I wanted a safe and reliable auto, so I did not have to worry and stress about breaking down and safety issues. I went to Wayne Akers Ford in West Palm Beach, FL. I decided to go with Ford Motor Company, because I wanted to buy an American car, and I appreciated the fact that Ford did not need a bailout, when all others did. I thought they showed integrity by standing tall in harsh economic times. I ended up leasing a 2014 Ford Focus.
When I first started driving the vehicle, I did not like the way the car accelerated. It was sluggish, it felt like I was driving a stick shift, but this was an automatic. At times, when I started driving on the interstate, I noticed it did not accelerate as smooth as a new car should have. It seemed like I was in neutral, and it revved up suddenly, and then lurched into gear, as if the car was driving itself. When I called the dealer a few months into the lease, I was told that this was normal, as the cars computer system was getting used to my style of driving. What do I know about cars? So I took his advice to give it some time before I make any hasty decisions.
Okay, flash forward a few more months or so. This car, would roll backwards when I was on a hill, waiting for the traffic light to turn green. Then the car started shaking, going from first to second. Then as time went by, it started to shake more, it would make this grinding noise underneath the engine, it would lurch forward at times, it spits and sputtered, trying to get in gear, acceleration on the interstate was scary. When I finally called Ford again, they said to bring it in, to be checked out. I brought it in, and about three hours later, they called me, and said it was ready. When I went to pick it up, this is what the warranty manager told me: "The car was updated to Fords standards, and it is okay now". He then added that "There was a 50/50 chance this could happen again."
Really? Is this what I expect from a new vehicle? Well, a few weeks later, this car is lunging, making loud noises, it does not accelerate properly, it feels like it's in neutral, with a high rev, before it finally lurches into gear and takes off. It grinds loud, it shakes, the steering wheel vibrates, the engine feels like the motor mounts are missing, they're not, I had it checked. And now, I don't feel safe in this car, it is scary to drive. I am so disappointed. I then researched numerous complaints about this year and model. Seems there is a faulty transmission/clutch problem, that Ford refuses to admit. There is a Lemon law in Florida, isn't there? I just want a safe ride. Where do I go now. This vehicle should meet the consumers standards. I want it fixed, or another model. What is my next move. I don't trust these mechanics.

I was inches away from being involved in a serious car accident today (November 6th, 2015) on Highway 403 towards Brantford at approx. 5:25pm. My name is Josh ** and I own a 2015 Ford Focus FSE (purchased new in Ontario in September 2015). My vehicle was manufactured at Ford's Michigan plant, with equipped transmission parts found in virtually every Ford Focus sold worldwide manufactured in Mexico at Ford part supplier Getrag's plant.
It all started when I noticed a small grinding noise accompanied by rough shifts and clunks the day I took ownership, and after taking it to Ford a few days later a Ford mechanic went for a drive with me, said its "breaking in the new clutch", dismissed it as nothing and sent me on my way. According to Ford, the car operates as an automatic but internally has a computer controlled/shifted manual transmission. Ford calls this "the best of both worlds to save fuel economy", and is currently being sued in California court - however Ford admitted it would have to move the case to a United States Federal Court as the total cost to fix all vehicles and compensate owners EXCEEDS the California Justice System's maximum penalty of $5,000,000 and must move the case to US Federal Court. Meaning that at $1,095 per transmission, the damages will exceed $110,000,000 even if only 100,000 cars were sold. And that's JUST CALIFORNIA OWNERS!
These conditions present a safety hazard because they severely affect the driver's ability to control the car's speed, acceleration and deceleration, the case mentioned. Even more troubling, the transmission defect can cause the vehicle to fail to downshift and decelerate when the brakes are depressed. As a result, plaintiffs and class members have experienced their cars lurching forward into intersections at red lights due to the failure of their braking efforts to stop the car.
I was driving the Focus today on Highway 403 towards Brantford (after the Wilson Street interchange) travelling at a speed of 103km/h, accelerating to 110km/h in order to change lanes safely from right to left. I remember the top speed of 110km/h as this is the time the car's rpm gauge jolted to 8,000RPM and made a loud repeated banging noise - almost like the computer controlled clutch didn't know what to do and just kept trying to re-engage itself to no avail and at highway speeds. The steering wheel slipped out of my hand for almost 4 seconds due to the sudden and powerful jolt of RPM's (felt like an elephant smashed the accelerator pedal) and I nearly struck the car I was passing.
If you were the person who I was passing and by any chance happen to remember me. I'm very sorry, simply Google "Ford Focus Transmission" and have fun reading all the serious complaints and lawsuits currently filed against the company - you'll need a few days! When getting off Highway 403 in Brantford at the Garden Ave interchange I then begun to decelerate by removing my foot from the accelerator pedal and slowly pressing the brake pedal as usual - and BOOM BANG CLACK as the transmission downshifted I had to slam on the brakes to achieve a stopping effect that countered the high RPM's the engine was doing. I'm assuming pressing both pedals at once would produce a similar effect. Scary!
After doing some quick research when I finally arrived home (no thanks to Ford - who told me to DRIVE THE CAR HOME!) I quickly discovered that Ford is WELL AWARE about this transmission issue which plagued me since ownership and thousands of others for years and HAVE PUT MUCH EFFORT into ACTIVELY CONCEALING AND HIDING THIS SERIOUS DEFECT FROM CONSUMERS RATHER THAN FIXING THE PROBLEM AND SAVING LIVES.
I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR! DO NOT BUY THIS CAR! Read more about this issue if you are or know an owner of 2010 - 2015 Ford Focus (or Fiesta), or just pass it along - you could save a life! Extremely unhappy and on the phone with Ford. I've had time to write this entire post waiting for them to call back. Apparently the parts are OUT OF STOCK and NATIONAL BACK ORDER, probably because they don't exist yet. Latest call I made to them today to check the status of my vehicle - service department unavailable, only sales. No thanks! My 30th birthday is tomorrow. Thanks for ruining it Ford. Never again!

I thought it was whatever so I got the car because it was on sale for the weekend. After about a month, I started feeling the jolts and the sputtering and it just didn't feel right to me. The car should still be new, technically. Back in September I received a notice for a recall so I needed to take it in for a software update. Then my panic button on the key wouldn't make the alarm go off, the lights would come on, but no sound. I checked my horn and it wouldn't work. I looked up online and someone said something about low battery. I pushed the information button and it said low battery. I went to A auto parts store and the battery voltage was 12.39 and the ccu was 573, but should have been 590.
They said to charge the battery and bring it back. I charged it overnight and the horn, panic button and the beep after locking the car worked. I took it to the auto part store and the voltage was now 12.27 but the ccu was 600 and that was said to be fully charged. My car is only 3 years old and I have had it in several times with weird things going on like radio not turning off when you get out of the car and lights staying on when you shut the door and doors not opening up when you unlock them. As soon as we got it home, it began to make a funny grinding sound I called ford who said it was normal for the car to grind going from first to second gear because of the automatic/ manual transmission. I thought I didn't need any more answers but as I have had my car for almost two years now the grinding is so much worse and it jerks when I go to take off it stalls and just makes me feel like its extremely unsafe to drive. I took it back to ford July where one the service men told me it was my transmission seals that they were all leaking and that was causing the grinding sound. Then when I took it in and left it there the said it would take a couple hrs well I went out of town for the day came back and they hadn't touched my car. The service man then proceeded to tell me that he didn't have me scheduled so they didn't work on my car.
So I went to a different service man and he said they would look at my car and see what was going on. He said it wasn't my transmission seals that it was again NORMAL. I got home and went to look at something when I noticed my hood was dented bent and in the early stages of being crushed. At this point I was extremely irate and called ford and told them what I had found. I took it in the next day to get an explanation and the service man I dropped my car off with, said he didn't remember that when I brought it in. And then he went to ask the technician who said it was there when it was brought to him so they wouldn't do anything.
I had the damages appraised and they told me it was gonna a be somewhere around $1200 to get it fixed. I didn't even cause the damaged, why should I have to pay for it? I dropped it off as soon as they opened and picked it up with damaged done to my car. It has been an on going battle since then. A couple weeks ago I called another ford dealer relatively close to me and that's when I found out that does had made a recall on my transmission. I immediately took it to Ford dealer, they said it was normal and were extremely rude and negative. I took it to a second ford dealer and they informed me that there were open recalls and they reprogrammed the transmission and that the vehicle needed new clutches. I bought a 2014 Ford Focus October 14 2014. The make date was October 11 2014. So I got the car 3 days after it was manufactured. The night I took it home my boyfriend drive it and told me something was wrong with the way my car was shifting and that my rpm should not be jumping back and forth. I didn't think anything of it because it was new, so I was like it just needs to be broken in. March 2015, I pulled off from the red light of a huge intersection and my car would not speed up and it began to jerk and came to a complete stop and then turned off in the middle of the road. I got it to turn back on and pulled into a driveway off the street. My car wouldn't go in reverse and it kept saying transmission fault. I took it to ford that night and left it there for about 3 days. They said that the computer module needed to be replaced so they did that and gave it back to me.
The next week my a/c started blowing straight heat, they fixed that. About a month later my car started jerking whenever I pulled off or tried to accelerate. I took it back and 3 days later Chris, one of the service workers at Ford Lincoln of Franklin, told me that my clutch was slipping and that it would take 3 weeks for them to get a clutch in and that it was okay for me to drive it until then. I told what do I look like driving a car with the clutch slipping, that's not safe and I'm not doing it and I told him that I would keep the rental until they fixed the problem. At first he tried to say no and that he couldn't allow me to do that, but I didn't budge. So they kept my car for 29 days and tried to give it back before 30 days so it wouldn't be classified as a lemon.
They thought that it had to be out of service for 30 consecutive days in order to be a lemon but I had already called an attorney and asked, and it's actually 30 cumulative days and this made about 34-35 days in total. The following month I took it back to ford because it was making an excessive noise, jerking, and resisting to drive or excel. Josh from the same dealership called and told me that they order some parts for my car because my transmission was failing, and that they reinstalled my clutch. When asked what parts did they order he wouldn't tell me so at that point I filed a case with the BBB and complained to the manufacturer. A couple weeks later, it was still making noises and jerking and they told me that it was normal and that the car was just learning how I drive. My brake light connector kept coming disconnected and my horn stopped working.
I've almost been in two wrecks, one because my car kept spinning and went into the other lane when I turned a corner. Luckily there were no cars there or coming. As I was getting on the interstate I almost got ran off the road because my car wouldn't speed up so I could get over from the ending lane and almost got hit by an 18 wheeler. It's been 3 months since I've had the case with the BBB and ford and we finally go to court tomorrow for arbitration. Hopefully they decide to make ford buy my car back. I don't even care to trade into something because I'm so over ford. I'd rather have my money back and take my business elsewhere. If they don't decide to do anything, I will be filing a class action lawsuit the very next day.

I am having major issues with my 2014 Ford Focus just weeks after driving my car off of the lot. I am having issues with my car. It is an automatic with the built in manual transmission. I have been seeing reviews from others with the same problems. My car is very unsafe and jolts forward - feels like it is about to stall when I am going through an intersection which almost causes an accident. It is very loud and clunky. It sounds like it was built in the 70s. Every person that gets in my car asks me what is wrong with it and how unsafe it is etc.
I have taken it to Ford MANY times and they say that is just how it is and they can't do anything. I have written head office and they said to trade it in which would cost me more money in the long run for something that is their fault. I am so unhappy with their service and it is very unsafe to be driving my young daughter around in this car. It is a matter of time before this thing causes an accident for not accelerating in the middle of an intersection or something. Can anyone help me and give me advice what to do as Ford will not do anything. I do not want this POS car. It is not safe and I can't afford to just go trade it in and owe double on a car. Please help.

I bought my 2014 Ford Focus with 40,000 miles on it. Right away the shuddering became obvious (actually it happened on the test drive and the Enterprise salesman assured us it was the cool "double clutch" design). I took the car back within the first week and the clutch was replaced. It did improve the drive but I continue to not be sure of the strange 1st to 2nd transmission experience. I've had several mechanics drive the car and they all feel exactly what I do and think there is a transmission problem. I have only owned it less than two months and would participate in an action regarding this car.

This is my third incident in 11 months. It has had an engine, transmission and clutch problem. Steven Ford is telling me I am responsible for paying for the parts $605 to fix my car. Within the first month my clutch needed to be rebuilt. I had a loaner for almost 3 weeks because the clutch had to be rebuilt at the manufacturer. My son was driving the car on the highway with my 19 month old grandson and the car starting losing power. I am disgusted and angry. I feel as though I have been taken advantage and do not feel I am responsible for paying for the parts.

The transmission is failing after only 15,000 miles. It shudders, surges, and grinds. It is appalling. The dealer is going to replace the clutch shaft which they claim will solve the trouble but I am unconvinced. I do not buy a new car to risk being broken down somewhere on the highway. I see that there is a lawsuit against Ford for the same issue for previous year models. That makes me even more incredulous that they would continue to install this lousy transmission. I want a recall and a total replacement.

I bought a certified pre-owned 2013 Focus with 39K miles. After a few weeks, I noticed hesitation and shuddering of the transmission. I went to the dealer and they gave me an informational handout about the characteristics of the transmission. I thought it was a crappy excuse, but I accepted it. After I signed up with Carfax, I found out that there was a recall notice for the transmission. I called the Ford dealer and the service rep said don't do anything until it starts to make noise. Funny how it happened, the next day, the clanking noise started. Over time, I learned to drive the car with a soft touch, so to speak. In stop and go traffic, it really sucks... lurching, almost stalling, and noisy. A few time I got a warning that the transmission was overheating and to stop, happened a few times. It hasn't really been as bad as some of the stories I've read.
About two weeks ago, I got a recall notice from Ford, the module that controls the transmission needs a software update. I thought I'd get around to getting it into the shop. Three days later, I was in bumper to bumper traffic in San Francisco (where I live) going up steep hills. A warning light came on that the transmission is overheating and to pull over immediately. There was no place to pull over, so I was trying to make it to the intersection. Well, it died on a steep hill, narrow street.... completely disabled, no forward or backward motion at all. After an hour, it finally decided to move. Took it to the Ford dealer the next day, took 2 days for the update to download, picked it up today.... it's not the same car! It's way better!! I wish you all had this same experience. I probably won't buy another Ford, but I am going to drive this one into the ground!!

I have a 2014 Ford Focus. I bought it in March and it had 33 miles on it. I'm having all of the same issues everyone else is! Shuttering, not accelerating and almost being hit in an intersection multiple times, jerking etc... That sales guy knew of the issues but had no problem selling it to me! I got it at Ray Skillman Ford in Greenwood, Indiana. I had it in for service about a month ago. They said that the car had to present the issue while in their possession before Ford will let them do anything. So they finally got it to act up and they replaced the clutch but could not make any promises about the performance of the car.
Just as they suspected it started having the same issues. I took it in again a few days ago and they ended up replacing the control module in the transmission (this is what was causing the issue with accelerating). He said he replaced the clutch again also. I asked why and if that would solve the issue and he said no. He only replaced it because he had an extra one in stock. Thanks but no thanks! If it's not going to fix the issue then why bother? You can tell that these service guys are so defeated! They can only do what Ford allows them. With so many daily complaints and issues I would be defeated too!
Ford just needs to step up and replace everyone's transmission with something normal and be done with it! Let me just say I have to return my rental car today and don't want to! It's so nice to drive a car that functions properly and that I feel safe in (Toyota). I saw someone mention something about a class action lawsuit. I'm ready, willing and able to move forward if we can get a good team together! Feel free to respond if you are on board for the lawsuit. I've never filed one before so I don't know how it works. Thanks and good luck to everyone!

I purchased a 2014 Ford Focus and after 2,000 miles the car began shuddering and stalling on acceleration and the car actually lost power while driving at 35 mph. I was almost rear ended after it stalled out after turning a corner and thank goodness, the car behind me was able to miss me and not get in an accident himself. Would have been my fault according to the insurance company. Then to make matters worse, the car completely shut off while driving. Limited steering and the brakes were not responsive and I just coasted to the side of the road. What if I had been going 70 mph on the Interstate?! The shuddering upon acceleration was excessive. At this point, the car had been in for this bogus transmission reprogram/recall twice and it didn't do anything. The plan was to replace my clutch and TCM and I had to wait for 3 weeks for the parts.
After these two, near, accident mishaps they gave me someone else's parts to fix my car. Well, after I drove it out of the dealership, the car drove like it has never driven, which was good, but now 200 miles after the repair it is beginning to lurch and shudder at 25 mph. I have talked to Ford Motors (there is a number on your Ford owners manual) and they give me this scripted BS. I have a car with barely 4,000 miles. Sticker on the car was $25,000 and now after 4 months, the car trade in value is $14,000. How can a car that is 4 months old lose $11,000 in value.
After research, I found out that the reason the car has devalued so much is because of the transmission problems. I lost the $7,500 trade on my wonderful 2010 Ford Focus that I traded in. The part that gets me the most, besides the financial loss and a car that I just don't feel is safe in is the way Ford Motors is handling this defect in the transmission and implies that it is the characteristic of the transmission and blames the problem on how the driver is driving the car. OK, I bought an automatic transmission car because I want to gas and go. Ford Motors states that it is actually a manual and an automatic transmission and that this is the characteristic of this car. I claim BS because I drove a manual transmission for 25 years and never once did my manual transmission car drive like this. For this reason, I will never buy another Ford again.
Since 2008, my husband and I have bought 4 new Fords, with the last being the car I am now driving. Too bad Ford, I will never buy another car that you manufacture. It is cheaper to keep an existing customer than to get a new one. Your loss Ford. Your actions, your loss. Oh, one more bit of information. When I was at the dealership service and in the waiting room, I kept seeing Focus after Focus drive in. When the people came into the waiting room I asked them, if they didn't mind, what was wrong with their Focus and they ALL stated the same problem as mine. This problem is widespread and not isolated to certain cars. Shame on Ford.

I purchased a 2012 Ford Focus two years ago from a dealer and was told that the car was in great working condition. Within weeks the transmission began to slip and the electrical system began to fail. Over the next two years I took my vehicle into the Ford dealer a close total of 20 times. They made over five attempts to fix the vehicle all in which failed. Then they began to tell me that nothing was wrong with the car even though they put in writing that there was a problem numerous times.
Finally, they told me not to return even though my vehicle was under warranty so I called the BBB whom forced Ford to have a Ford engineer look at the vehicle. The engineer stated that the car had no issues, which was a lie, and went on his way. A few weeks later I had another Ford dealer look at my car and they said there definitely still is a major problem with my cars transmission and they also stated I have one of the real bad FORDs. They can make a service attempt but it won't fix the problem.
So now I'm faced with a car that is dangerous to my life all because they manufactured it poorly. Its power system malfunctions. The transmission slips bad. The car won't shift gears quick enough in traffic - it shakes violently out of control at times and will often not go in reverse. A car that powers down is a hazard but Ford believes otherwise. Please help me share this concern until the whole world hears. They need to be taken to court and their vehicles must come off of the road immediately.

After the car has been driving for about 1/2 hour to a hour the car begins to lurch forward, roll backwards, the transmission slips and I lose power at times. I have had a couple close calls just trying to get out of intersections. If anyone else has had issues with their Ford Focus around build 2012 I would like to know. Maybe we can get together. All I want is a new transmission.
Someone is going to get killed because of these vehicles and Ford refuses to address. Ford still is sell the cars because they can. The issues don’t start until there is a hour or more on the engine to get it heated up and the issues are intermittent. I love the car. I love the way it looks and drives. They said the battery wasn't strong enough to perform the work and that I would have to purchase a new one for $129.00! I am guessing that the car battery was weaker due to having to crank the car for 10-15 mins at a time multiple times (because of the issue with the TCM)!! Purchased a 2013 Focus while looking for good gas mileage and I presumed durability. Wrong. I drive for a living, and do put on a lot of miles (highway). However my experience has lead me to believe that Ford has no repair for this vehicle, nor a desire to make it right for those that are experiencing the shudder issue. Mine started 2 months after I bought the car 6/13. It was programmed and I was assured that was the fix.10/13 I am back in and they said clutches were bad, they'd have to replace. While the transmission was out, they called and said a rear main seal was leaking on the engine and that too would have to be replaced. I get the car back and it seemed better, but not right. I ran with it until the shudder became so bad that I had to return to the dealer 9/14. Programmed once again. Nothing positive.
10/14 there is a rattle in the transmission, it goes back in and tech said couldn't make it happen. I do not believe that it rattles every day under any circumstance, yet when a technician drives it the car doesn't make a peep (right). 9/15 the shudder is back yet again (it's never really gone away, just more tolerable at times). Once again it is programmed with a new and improved software. It was new, perhaps, but not improved. Today the car went in again for the shudder is terrible, the front tires chirp just like someone mentioned before, like a new driver trying to learn a manual transmission. The added torque strain on the drive line has created a vibration in the drive train. I was informed just today that there is nothing that can be done.
I have no problem with the dealership as they have been great, even though their hands are bound by Ford Motor Company. So Ford is getting a Certified Letter of Intent from me in regards to this matter. If they balk, they will be facing a legal suit brought to the Attorney Generals Office in the State of Minnesota under the statute of "Lemon Law". Keep all of your service reports, service repairs, to document the process and complaint.
I am not one that believes in suing anybody, but this is a blatant disregard for the customer, and I cannot afford to spend $21,000 for a vehicle that cannot make it 6 months, let alone two years. Ford admitted guilt in the simple fact that they discontinued use of this transmission after 3 years. They know it is bad and are trying to sweep our cars under the rug. Disclosure laws state that "ALL" problems with a vehicle must be disclosed to the buyer. I believe Ford left that part out. Disgruntled in Minnesota.

For the past year, the car has lost transmission power while driving - I was on HWY 40 and the car just stopped working. I was in the middle of a busy intersection and the car cut off. I was at a near stop and the car stopped responding... this has been reported numerous times by others. Ford's fix? They came out with a software update that may turn on my engine light before a failure. THIS IS NOT A FIX. I asked them if someone needed to die in their car or get crushed in an intersection for them to do something. I filed a complaint with Ford and the NHTSA. So frustrated and angry.

Purchased a 2014 Focus used (15,000 miles) from a local dealer. Should have done more research. Drove the car approx. 600 miles. While pulling into the garage after my evening commute the oil warning light came on. I parked the car, waited a while, then checked the oil. There was no oil on the stick. Added a quart and the light went off. So where did the oil disappear to? Use a quart every 600 miles? I certainly hope not. In addition, I am also experiencing some of the transmission maladies described by others. I have a feeling this is going to get expensive. Beginning to wish I had my old Chevy back.

We all here have horror stories about the Focus transmission. Why can't we get in on a class action lawsuit? I was told I had a bad clutch and that Ford redesigned them to be a lot better. So I had mine replaced about 2 weeks ago, ever since then I have been losing reverse (only after driving it for 25 miles or so). Not only that but when making a turn now, there is a severe grinding/creaking noise coming from the transmission and I'm being told this is normal. It's not normal! You don't know how much it pained me to have to make my car payment last week when I hadn't had the car for 2 weeks out of the month. It was sitting at the shop being "tested" and still isn't fixed. Time to go to a new dealer to see if I'll get the same BS. I will never buy a Ford again, nor will I recommend anyone else to.

It has been months now that we have had to deal with transmission problems (shuddering, grinding, jolting of acceleration). Ford continue to say it is how we drive the car and that they can fix the car. All staff have acknowledged this is a problem and have started making new vehicles with a different transmission, but when will we all get compensated? We have value in our car that is beyond market value, which consists of amount paid for extras such as paint protection, interior protection, and extended warranties.
They want me to trade the vehicle in for 11000 when it was bought less than 10 months ago for 14000. Since purchasing my vehicle, I have been given no choice but to drive an unsafe, erratically functioning, mechanically unsound vehicle. I have been given no guarantee of a solution or no long-term hire of an alternate vehicle until a solution has been made. I will not continue bringing my car in for computer upgrades and new clutches which are reported by Ford service managers themselves to be a band-aid to the problem and when no guarantee of a solution can be given.

I probably don't need to go into all the specifics regarding my transmission problems considering the tens of thousands of bad reviews already, but what I do want to say is IT IS NOT NORMAL! There are too many people out there saying this problem is normal because it's a new "automatic manual transmission" and it's supposed to shift "funny" or "different." It's apparent that anyone who says or thinks this has never drove this car fresh off the showroom floor. 100% of all people have this problem occur over time according to the filed complaints and lawsuits. If you have a car that drove in your test drive the way I describe here shortly, 100% of you would not purchase that car. I will admit that this car does feel "funny and different" and takes some getting used to when you first get behind the wheel when compared to a normal automatic transmission.
The difference in this is the shuttering, shaking, difficulty stopping, rolling backwards, super slow starts, and clanking from hard downshifting, is not what I would call "funny or different" as people are saying. Picture the first time you drove or taught someone how to drive a manual transmission vehicle and all the shaking, shuttering, and rolling backwards down a hill at a stop sign or red light and then imagine your current automatic car doing that same thing. Another way for me to give you an idea of what it is like is this... You thinking your stick shift is in first gear at a stop only to find out it was in third gear while you attempt to take off but you don't care and try to go anyway. Or, if you ever found yourself in 5th gear at 30 mph and floored the gas and went nowhere.
Now, imagine that happening as you attempt to pass a car in front of you doing 8 mph under the speed limit, as you're running late to work, as you punch it to go around the car and the transmission decides to not downshift, but instead it will shake, rattle, and roll at the same speed as you were but now the pedal is floored in your automatic! Yes sir! That's what you get from this transmission after time. These "people" telling me, and by "people" I mean Ford Mechanics and Ford Service Managers, that this is normal is a joke! If this is normal as they all say, why didn't this behavior happen off the showroom floor, or after a round-trip vacation to Niagara Falls from outside of Cleveland, but only after the car was approaching 30k miles? Seems to me that normal would be normal and not just having a problem every other day, or every day, or every fourth day.
My best odds of experiencing my issues are after 55+ mph for a minimum of 30 miles then trying to drive through a very busy city with lots of stop and go traffic. Does this sound normal to you? My car is currently in the shop while the dealer owner and Ford go back and forth with each other deciding if my car is vibrating hard enough for them to fix it. They hook up a computer to the car and it reads rpm's then prints out results on paper like a seismograph prints out readings from ground tremors. If I can update this post with pics and/or details after finding out my results, I will in a couple days. PS. my loaner car from the dealership was a recent trade in that has the same problem. Maybe that's Ford's way of trying to tell me what I'm experiencing is "normal!?" Ugh.

Today engine light came back on and it would not shift to drive and when it finally did no gas at first. Then it shifted hard into other gears. Very unsafe and having a hard time getting this issue properly taken care of.

My 2013 Ford Focus at first was very jerky when starting up. This quickly progressed into a definite high revving sound in the motor as the transmission searched in vain for the correct gear. After 4 trips to the dealer and long subsequent waits between services there is no improvement. The car balks and lurches with seemingly no midrange gears. The car must be driven slowly with slow acceleration. This plus the balking makes the car a hazard to drive. Only with lengthy gaps in traffic can you merge onto a highway. I was told that this was normal but it definitely is not. The jerky progression is hard on the neck as it is unpredictable. The question is what do you do about it?

My first experience was a defective clutch which caused a very bad shudder and caused sluggishness at acceleration. World Ford said there was essentially a back order on the kit. After 2 months it was finally replaced. Recently my vehicle started making a whining noise when accelerating and going to 4000 RPM before shifting. When coming to a stop it sounded like a hard downshift of a standard. (I have this recorded) It idled low and rough and at times didn't want to go when I accelerated. The morning I had my service scheduled it wouldn't start. Ford Roadside send a tow truck to take it to World Ford Service Department. This was a Tuesday, on Friday I received a called from DAN the service writer asking when had my car been in an accident. He continued saying, apparently they missed a bent axle which caused extreme damage to the transmission most likely requiring a new one.
He then said "how long has it been making the LOUD grinding noise". WHAT??? I informed it had never made a grinding noise (luckily I have a recording and two people I had drive it to get their opinion to back that up) My car had been in a non-collision accident in January. I may be a woman BUT I am not stupid. Had I had a bent axle that was bad enough to ruin the transmission I would have noticed it, wobbling, pull to one side etc. They are trying to get my insurance to pay for it. If the axle is bent it happened after it left my house. Ford knows these transmissions are junk but don't want to step up and take responsibility. I have told my insurance company to investigate because what they are claiming is not the truth.

However, have problems with the radio randomly shutting off or just not working correctly or my auto doors not wanting to unlock at times.
Sometimes when I start my car, the radio that had previously on will randomly just be off and I have to turn back on. Had to have the aftermarket GPS replaced, but on day 2 of life, it stopped reporting yet again. I have taken it back the dealership MULTIPLE times and they don't seem to know what's going on because they can't replicate it - it doesn't happen ALL the time. This all started just a few weeks after buying the my 2014 Ford Focus SE. The transmission would lag when shifting and then lurch forward and spin the tires. It would hesitate when taking off from stop signs and constantly upshift and downshift when going up hills. The car several times almost stalled in stop and go freeway traffic. Don't even get me started on the steering problems when braking downhill. I took it to the dealership at that time and was told that the computer hadn't yet had time to learn my driving habits. I was told to give it some time and see if it got better. They told me they were really backed up on work and it could take them a few days to even get to it. I didn't have any choice but to keep driving the car. This went on for months before my wife came close to being rear ended because the car was jerking and shifting in traffic.
I took the car to the dealership again and was told these cars have a transmission that is a constant problem for them. The service advisor told me that the car basically has a manual transmission that Ford made automatic by adding two servo motors and a double clutch system with two extra computers. He said the computers don't always sync and they can cause issues with the main computer. They again told me the car would have to be in for a few days at least because they were backed up on repairs. A few days later they called me to come drive around with the tech so he could see what it was I was talking about. I drove around with the tech and explained what I had experienced. He noticed the jerking and hesitation and told me the computers needed to be synced.
Another couple of days and my car was ready. I picked it up at the dealer and was told to give it a few weeks for the car to re-learn how to shift and get used to my driving habits again. Well a month went by and the car was still doing the same thing. I contacted the service advisor again and he told me they were really swamped and to bring it in the following week. I took the car in again and explained the problem the following week. I was told that there was a new service bulletin from Ford that had come out a few days after my car had been in the last time that required another computer sync to solve some reported issues.
They completed that computer re-sync and I got my car back a couple of days later. Unfortunately the car is still making the same clanking noise when you turn and still hesitates and still shifts in and out when driving uphill. The service advisor again told me the car is still learning how to shift and when to shift based on my driving habits. So my problem at this point is when are they actually going to fix the real problem, i.e. replace the piece of junk transmissions they put in these cars or buy back their defective dangerous cars. Also if the car needs to learn how to drive based off of driving habits of the individual driver what happens when someone else drives the car? That makes no sense at all to me and sounds like someone blowing smoke to shut your complaints down!

It developed shuddering, grinding, and bucking symptoms. She also experienced loss of acceleration when she stopped and started again. Since, she lived on campus, she didn't have very many miles on the car. When she came home for Thanksgiving, I drove the car around to see what she was experiencing and she was right. We took it to the GP Ford House and they said they couldn't do anything until the car had 10,000 miles on it. When she came in for Spring Break (March 2015) she had just at 10,000 miles and we took the car to the Ford House to be repaired. They did a "temporary" fix by saying it needed to be reprogrammed.
She called me yesterday (Aug 1, 2015) and said it was now acting worse. I called the Ford House this morning (Aug 3, 2015) and they said it was a four day wait just for the car to be seen and that there really wasn't a "fix" for the transmission. They said that Ford knew in the beginning that this was the way the car was designed. It was designed to act like a "manual" transmission because consumers wanted the "feel" of an old fashion standard car.
I said I am 63 yrs. old and not stupid. If someone wanted a "manual" transmission, they could order one and who wants a manual transmission in 2014/2015. I was raised on a standard 3 shift on the steering column and 4 in the floor! And why weren't we told this by the sales staff. Oh I know, they needed to get them off their lot! The service man said well that is the way it is designed and they are adding another 150,000 miles onto your warranty. I said I want a new transmission and he said that can't happen, it's not compatible with the engine. Now, the only thing left I can do is live with it, buy another car, or wait 'till she has an accident and then I will sue Ford for everything I can get out of them plus start up a class action suit against them!

I have a 2013 Ford Focus SE (4 door) Sedan. I traded it for a 2011 Ford Focus S (4 door) Sedan at the end of 2012. Of course, when buying the car, the dealer explained to me about how it came equipped with their new powershift technology which would save me gas $ and let me enjoy the benefits of a manual transmission at the ease of an automatic transmission. What they failed to mention was that it would grind, and jump, and hesitate like everyone else on here is describing. So I took it back the next day and told them I wanted my old car back. They told me it doesn't work like that; I had to stick with my decision. "Wow," I thought. After being drowned out by a pushy dealer, I decided to give it a chance. See if maybe they were right and that it just needed to get used to the way I drive. (FYI, I do like Ford and my dealership, just not the transmission scheme that the company is trying to pull.)
Anyway, it's been almost 3 years since then and no change. Still grinds. Still jumps. Still hesitates. And then it happened today. On the drive home from work my transmission slipped when I accelerated from a stop and it got stuck in low gear. So now I'm taking it back to the dealer tomorrow, at which point I'm sure they'll try to convince me to step into a new vehicle and further my car payments.
Not happy to say the least. I'll never forget my thoughts when I took my car back to the dealer the first time and they told me it was normal for that type of transmission "technology." That doesn't mean it's normal, folks. That just means the "technology" sucks... and you know about it... and you're doing everything in your power to get rid of those cars until your contract runs out with that transmission producer. At 12,000 Km the dealer did what they called a level two service of the transmission. That seemed to stop the problem for about another 12,000 km as I am back in the same situation with a transmission that won't perform smoothly. The dealership have told me exactly what Ford has told them to tell the customer: "This is normal performance for this style of transmission." Like everyone else here I think we all agrees, this is a complete load of bull crap from Ford. This is another example of Ford giving the finger to the up till now loyal customers of their product.
If there is now factory defect with the design and performance of this transmission, why did ford send me a letter extending my drive train warranty from five years out to seven? The reason, to try to keep us quiet, plain and simple. Ford likely there was a serious design flaw with this transmission but still proceeded to put into production because they likely had too much money invested in it's design to kill it. They probably thought it was going to be cheaper to just deal with a few dissatisfied customers and repairing the ones that met their failure criteria.
I am sorry Ford but I'm not falling for it. This is the last Ford vehicle I will ever own. I will never recommend your product ever again. After owning my car for 10 months I started to hear a strange noise like crackling, the car was shuttering and then started hesitating into gear. I took it to the dealer, they said this was normal but that there have been some transmission issues. Long story short, they did change the "automatic-manual clutch" part that is the issue in the transmission. I have been back 2 more times for the latest adjustment and seal repairs. I still have the same problems. I took it back for the 3rd time, was told the car is still learning how I drive!!!!! Computerized or not, no car needs to get use to the way you drive. I am fed up with a car I cannot trust to get me through an intersection or cross traffic. Ford needs to design another transmission that works and replace the ones that don't.

I Mohammed ** has been a Ford owner since 1996. I bought a brand new F150 Truck, after I bought a Ford Power Stroke. They gave me nothing but problems, I wasted a lot of money fixing it up. Then the Ford dealership on Capitol Expressway couldn't fix my Diesel truck. They said 6.0 is the worst engine. So they took the truck off of my hands, and put the leftover amount that I owed onto a Ford Focus 2014. Which I also bought from Ford Dealership on Capitol Expressway. Then the Ford Focus, on the first week, it started shaking and jerking. I then took it back to the dealership, and they said it was a transmission problem. Which they fixed.
A week later the same problem returned. The speed this time picks up on its own. So I ran into a side wall, because of the sudden speed. I hurt my back in the process. So I took it back to Ford Dealership. They said that, that is how the car is made. They said it's made for a manual transmission. So it will jerk and catch speed like that. But I told the dealer that the car is an automatic. They didn't listen so I ended up fixing the front fender myself. Now the vehicle is idling roughly, making lots of noise, and there isn't any point going to the dealership because they won't do anything. I am so tired of this. I don't know what to do.

I have been there 6 times and left my car there for a total 1 month. And every time, they say it's normal. I should have never traded in my NISSAN. Will not recommended Ford to anyone.
Updated on 10/30/2015: Took my car in Wednesday last week for a clutch slipping, took them a week and a half to fix the car, picked my car up on the following Saturday. When I started it on their service drive it did not feel right. This is what I was told, "this is normal for the car with a replaced clutch that has been replaced for it to have vibrations and to shake when it starts and on idle, as well for the rpm to go up and down." Really!!! The car did not come in vibrating so why is it vibrating?? Now less than a week and the car is back in the service department, this time telling me it could be motor mounts, then later told the motor mounts are fine? So what is it? I am not happy with Ford customer service and the product they have made and sold to the public. Google which cars have the most accidents, Ford Focus hits the list.

My wife and I purchased a 2012 Ford Focus brand new with less than 10 miles on the odo back in 2012. In February of 2013 with little than 43k miles on it the clutch went out as I was driving to work. I could not get the car to start, I could not get it in drive. I drove 16 miles with the car in park to the nearest Ford dealer. Upon which time they told me it would take 5 days to get the clutch and one other part in for the repair. Ford refused to give me a loaner car and I had to pay out of pocket for a rental even though it was their fault the car messed up. Three months after the fix I began to noticed the clutch was loose again and it was hesitating upon take off, it also rattled on take off and in reverse. 6 months later the car ran out of gas even though the gauge said half a tank.
Then upon filling it up with gas the car would stop then shut off. It turns out that the car sits so low to the ground that its fuel tank scrapes when you hit bumps or debris. This caused the evap box to malfunction which is a 800 dollar fix. Now fast forward to 2015 - the car is going back into the shop because it won't go out of first gear or over 30 mph. It tries to go out of first but fails... So the transmission has messed up yet again. The car has been babied, it wasn't raced or dogged out. It just breaks and every time it breaks it comes without warning. I now hate Ford and I'll never do business with them again. At least this time they are giving me a rental until mine is fixed... If they can fix it. Thankfully they sent a recall notice out 5 months ago about the transmission.

We had bought a 2014 Focus with the more traditional 4 speed transmission and drove it for nearly a year. We only had to get a new one because that one got totaled in a wreck. We were able to replace it with a 2015 Focus that has this new (ie: funky and problematic) dual-clutch 6 speed transmission. The car ran badly from day one. It idled rougher than a truck, shifted strangely, and refused to accelerate when we needed it to. Living in Houston, Tx, this is a very big problem that endangers lives. I don't like to be harsh on a car, but if I need to go, then the car needs to move. After enduring this for a few months it started getting worse.
This Monday I took it to the dealership. Yesterday I get a cal saying that, and I quote from the FORD SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE, "this is a KNOWN issue, we have had a lot of problems with this transmission". I have personally traced this problem back to starting from 2006 with the release of the Fusion. I asked him why there had been no recalls since this has been a knowingly defective product for nearly a decade now. I never did get an answer on that... But I was also told that they did not have or EVEN MAKE any replacement parts for my car. Two months is when they will have it. Yeah! Two months, without a vehicle.
If the lemon law in Texas wasn't so messed up I would have them DEAD TO RIGHTS since the car will sit there until it's fixed. In the meantime, thank goodness I have a son in college whose 2000 Taurus is free to borrow so I can get to work. Hey, Ford, does it bother you to know that my son's Taurus with 175,000 original miles on the engine and transmission runs like new compared to this brand new Focus? I'm sorry, but that makes no sense mechanically. The Taurus is in good shape, but there is no way it should idle on cold start better than the Focus does when warm.
Ford has not made a decent vehicle since they stopped making the generation 4 Taurus, and the 2000 era F-150s. We have been loyal to Ford for years and I cannot even state how disappointed I am. I used to be a Ford salesman for years. I am so glad I got out of the business when I did, because I saw the quality drop to a level where I could no longer endorse the brand to my customers.

After experiencing hesitation between 1st and 2nd gear for quite some time now, this past week I brought it back into my Ford dealer to have it checked. They informed me that the hesitation is not outside of the normal range. I was a bit surprised to hear this as I have never been in a car with such hesitation. To me, there was something definitely wrong, but according to Ford it's normal?!
Clearly, this issue needs to be addressed and I do not understand why Ford is in denial of this problem. We invest our money in their company and it feels like they are giving us the middle finger. I certainly do not want to visit the shop each week but if that is the only way to get the attention I will. It's the principle of the situation and if there is a problem with the transmission, fix it and make it right. Don't hide behind the problem or make up stuff and say it's normal. Come on Ford, I thought you were better than that.

Let me first say that before we purchased these 2 cars, we had a high regard for Ford. We purchased a 2013 Ford Fiesta in January of 2013. The car seemed alright. A few months later we noticed there were some noises (almost like a crackle sound) coming from the car and shortly thereafter came the transmission issues. The car had a shutter feeling and the transmission was slipping when you accelerated. We brought the car in to get fixed. They "fixed" it. We drove out of the dealership and it was still making the same noises and had the same feelings. We turned right around and they said it will always have that effect because of the transmission. Excuse me? That isn't normal. Flash forward to about 8 months later. We need a new car (again). We say "ok, maybe let's give Ford another chance, maybe it's just the Fiesta model". We bought a 2014 Ford Focus.
As of today (7/6/2015) the Focus has 15,598 miles on it. It needs a new clutch and new seals because the transmission is slipping. The molding is coming off the side of the windshield. Oh, and the Fiesta had to go back into the dealership the weekend of July 4th because the passenger side front door latch decided it didn't want to latch anymore. Apparently it's a recall. What? You're telling me on a 2 year old car I have to drive with someone to the dealer just so they can hold the passenger door shut so it won't fly open into traffic? No. This shouldn't happen at all. Tell me why on earth these are quality products? Why? Would I ever invest my husband and my hard earned money again on a Ford? Absolutely not. They changed a transmission that wasn't broken. They are making parts as cheaply as possible and slapping a quality name on it and making millions. Ridiculous. It's a tin can. Keep your future cars, Ford.

Supposedly, the car does this because it has a "dual clutch," and it's normal. But there is nothing normal or safe about a car that is hesitating pulling onto a highway, endangering lives. I'm very disappointed in this car. The only good thing about it is the gas mileage, but I can find good gas mileage in a better car than a Ford. I learned my lesson. Don't buy a Ford Focus.

I have leased cars through Ford Motor Co. for 17 years. The past two cars I have leased - a 2011 Fusion and a 2013 Focus have had problems that were not just an inconvenience but downright dangerous. The Fusion had a brake issue that I was told by the mechanic at the local Dealership was a "wheel problem" and because my lease would be up in a couple of months not to worry about it. The brakes were wearing and making a terrible noise and were on the verge of total failure. I should have listened to my intuition at that point and gone to another manufacturer but the saleswoman at the Dealership talked me into a 2013 Focus lease and I naively fell for it.
The Focus started showing signs of wacky transmission at around 12,000 miles. I noticed it would delay shifting into gear intermittently at first and gradually became worse. I mentioned it to the mechanic at the Dealership and was told it was a known problem and it was a simple "computer problem" that could be fixed quickly. He wouldn't schedule an appointment for it and shrugged it off saying it wasn't a safety issue. Then, a friend of mine with the same year (2013) and model had an accident because the transmission kicked into high and he couldn't stop his car in time. Upon doing some research and simultaneously getting a letter from a lawyer saying my VIN number popped up as problematic I started to get really scared.
I drove for a couple of more months until one morning on the way to work, the transmission completely gave. I was at a red light in the rain and when I stepped on the gas - nothing. I had to have it towed to the dealership whereupon they didn't even look at it until after 2 days because they were so busy with other car repairs. I had to have a screaming match with the service department to get a loaner car because I missed close to 2 days of work. The dealership did fix the transmission (they had to order a part and have it delivered) finally but it still didn't fix the shifting problem.
Needless to say I am done with Ford. I recently got into the "pull-ahead" program with Chevy and I leased a 2015 Trax for less $$, better mileage and *hopefully* no car troubles. Sad but after 17 years I can't risk leasing a Ford any more. Thank goodness I didn't buy it. It looks like a Detroit problem to me and I feel kind of sorry for the employees at that dealership but I'm relieved I no longer have to deal with it.

The transmission stalls, slips, cannot find gears, shudders at times groans. The car has issues most when in stop and go traffic, or going up hills.

After starting the car again, I was able to drive it home. I got in my car this morning to drive it to the doctor's office. While I was driving it down the road at 55 miles per hour I lost all acceleration and the gas pedal wasn't working again. I was able to make it to the side of the road and turn it off and then back on. I proceeded to drive another 5 miles down the road and it happened again. This time the car would start right away. I had to let it set for a few minutes before it would start again. I was able to make it to the doctor's office thankfully.
I got back in the car to drive it home from the doctor's office. After about 5 miles or so the same issue again. So I did what I knew to do to get it running again. Luckily, there is a Ford shop on my way home. I dropped the car off there today and hope the issue gets resolved from the recalls that are posted for my car. I purchased a brand new 2012 Ford Fiesta 3 years ago, and I am now experiencing very questionable transmission problems. My car is at 54,000 miles and the transmission issues starting being very very obvious when I moved into the city and basically stopped doing freeway driving about 9 months ago. My car makes grinding noises when slowing, accelerating, and even sometimes turning. It makes clicking sounds when coasting/ slowing down. It jerks and shakes violently when slowing or accelerating... Now according to Ford, these are all "Normal Characteristics" of the Fiesta and Focus.
I got a letter from Ford in August of 2014 stating they were offering transmission work for a "Customer Satisfaction Program" for my Fiesta. So, I took it in. They only reprogrammed the computer and the mechanic said there was nothing wrong with my clutch. The next day my car continued to make awful loud grinding noises, and still continued to violently shake itself. Took it back, and it was as if they almost didn't believe me. (They are back ordered on clutches, but I got lucky and only had to wait a week and he somehow got a few and wanted to take care of my car for me.)
So, the second visit they... inspected the trans, replaced input shaft seals, axle seals, and clutch assembly, something about the adaptive learn for the trans. At the end of their repair report they stated the shutter was GONE. Nope, not gone. I called the next day. The Service guy told me "Honestly, it's just normal characteristics of the car. I'll let you drive the lead mechanic around and he can explain all of your concerns to you." Then when I got there "Oh we forgot to tell you the Adaptive Learn for your transmission takes about 2000 miles to adjust, once adjusted it should decrease the shuddering." Past that point, hasn't changed.
The mechanic was very friendly but stuck to the whole "It's all normal." So they won't do anything else for me to help with this problem now. OH! Not to mention there's another recall that got sent out in June 2015 for the door locks. I love my Fiesta. I'm sad to say I don't feel completely safe in it. I cannot take the chances of something going wrong and not being able to afford serious transmission work. So I'll be looking to sell my car soon. Very sad and disappointed. Especially since it's all paid off and I just recently put all new tires on it.

And now two months later the engine light came on and the car started to jerk and is not able to pass 40mph.. It will just hit 35mph and jerk back down to 20 and that repeats until I get where I'm going. It seem to do this when it's hot outside or when I drive it and get back in the car a hour later.
I took it to the Ford dealership and they have this recall program for people that have the Ford Focus and Fiesta. The dealership told me that program is for the transmission problems. I bought 2014 ford focus SE last June. First to second gear shudders, grinding, slipping in transmission. I took the car Apple ford. They said nothing wrong with the car. Problem how I drive the car. I have been driving 28 years and drive all kind of car. This is the worst car I never drive. They reprogram the software. After still same problem they order new clutch, has been a month not replace yet. So I hire a lawyer. I am going to take the court. That's lemon car. Ford shouldn't sell this car. We all stand together to fix this matter. It's safety issue.

I have a 2013 Ford Focus. I bought it new in October 2012. At 54,000 miles the computer has been reprogrammed and I am ready for the 3rd replacement clutch and transmission seals. This car is a joke and my dealer swears there is nothing wrong.

We purchased the car (2014) new. Car has excellent features, great in the snow, but had several issues with transmission slipping and shifting. After several visits to the service centers, they replaced the clutch. Driving much better now.

Ford go us 2013. The transmission was recalled. The car was shuttering. Took it into the shop, they updated software. Took it back in again because it was still shuttering. They said there was nothing wrong with it, it was just our driving style. Took it back in. It was shuttering so bad the car was shaking violently. After the clutch was fixed the car was still shuttering. Now the car isn't getting speed up on acceleration. They said there was nothing more they could do. They didn't even take the car for a test drive. They demanded I go for a drive with them.
At this stage I've had enough. The Ford case manager said there is nothing she can do. She demanded I go for a drive with them. However I had enough of this. When all they have to do is take the car for a drive themselves but didn't. I said to the case manager that I'll be taking the car to an independent transmission specialist. After reading on the Internet it seems like a design flaw. The mechanic at Ford had also said this in a roundabout way. The car is still shuttering and not getting speed on acceleration.

Touched the unlock door sensor and a thunderous noise began to emanate from the car. Hard at first to tell where the sound was coming from. Scary experience as it sounds like the car is going to blow up. Only solution found was to get into the car and start it and then the sound stopped.

I purchased my 2014 Ford Focus in October 2013. I began having problems with the transmission the first day that I got it but I thought that it would subside. I had my husband take the car to the dealership after it hesitated to go after coming to a complete stop shortly after the purchase. He was told that the issue was normal and that there was a mechanism which causes the vehicle to take off slowly but there was no fix. After hearing that this issue was normal, I kind of put it in the back of my head. I tried to adjust my driving to take off slower to limit the hesitation, but it doesn't work. There is constant grinding, transmission slips, and hesitation. I want to have it serviced but I don't have time to leave my car at the dealership with no way to work. I really wish I would have been warned of this before I purchased the car.

I bought a 2013 Ford Focus two years ago. Since my purchase, I've had the transmission re-programmed multiple times, new ignition, two new oil seals (oil leak), new clutch, new fuel vapor line, new over flow hose, and a new transmission. Now I have a loose headlight switch component that came out when I turned on my headlights and my pass airbag light does not remain lit when I have no passenger in the car. I called Ford Canada and they informed me to A) take the car back and get a complete diagnosis of the vehicle and B) purchase an extended warranty package because I'm over the km's (75000). This car is a lemon and a safety hazard. I will NEVER buy a Ford again for as long as I live.

I am very pissed. I brought a brand new 2014 Ford Focus. Have not had the car a year yet and I have taken the car back. This will be the fourth time for jerking and failure to obtain any type of speed. Very dangerous if I am at a complete stop or trying to obtain speed, my cars jerks and sometimes do not even go. I have kids and this is very dangerous matter. Tired of taking this car in to get replacement parts. No one should have to own a car that is not even one year old. Now I see why they say Ford stands for found on the road dead.

2013 Ford Focus - Had my car for a year now, always thought the transmission did not seem quite right. Got a letter from Ford about a transmission repair that they would do for free.. So we thought, well now it will be fixed. Oh they said all it needed was an update. Anyway today 6 months after the "update" I barely made it home from work, got a test done and it shows the car is stuck in 4th gear. It does this when it gets hot. So tomorrow I am going to the place I bought it to talk to them, and give them a chance to help me. I will update y'all. Bought a 2013 in 2014 at a Chevy dealership... RED FLAG... etc. If only I did research like I do when I'm going to buy a vacuum cleaner.

Since purchasing the Focus in 2013, it has basically been like we purchased a three-legged horse. The shuttering lagging jerking transmission and rolling backwards on hills has been an adventure. Just short of having whiplash it's an embarrassment to drive. Ford has helped us tremendously by telling us lame excuses and fake fixes but the best is... "It's suppose to do that." Really? So I intentionally went and bought a pile of crap for 20 grand? The internet is full of complaints and stories about this. So will Ford recall? Will the government step in? Zzzzzzzz. I feel like I was robbed and the big corporation of Ford could give a crap. Won't ever buy Fords again. If anyone can help me get out of this lemon please contact me.

I bought my 2012 Ford Focus SE brand new. I bought due to needing great gas mileage. I have had it for 3 years now and taken it to the dealership at least 5 times within the same month. If I'm on a steep incline and have to stop, the cat starts rolling backwards before I can even switch from gas pedal to break pedal. I explained this to the manager of the service department. He replied I should learn to put my gas on the break. I'm so furious with this and how scary it has been with two small children in my backseat. 5 o'clock traffic is horrible, my car jerks and shakes so bad I look like I don't know how to push in my clutch on a standard but the car is an automatic.
The dealership told me everything is fine, there is no problem with the car but within 3 months, Ford Motor have sent me 2 letters extending the warranty on the transmission. How it is I owe so much money on such a piece of crap? How can they even sell something so horribly made? I used to love Ford. I had a Fusion and Mustang prior to this car. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD. Neither should you!

For the past month my 2012 Ford Focus had been jerking when increasing to speeds of 55 mph and higher. I got the wheel alignment done, changed the tires, thinking it would help. On April 16th at 5 pm I was driving from school when I was passing a Burger King on a main road by the interstate, my car just lost all power and stopped. I tried to turn it back on, nothing. I ended up pushing it into Burger King's parking lot. Tried to jump it. No go. Took battery to get tested, completely dead. Ok, so all it needs is a battery? Wrong! Bought a new battery. Still nothing.
Had the car towed to pep boys where I am informed that it's the PCM/TCM and only Ford can fix it because it needs to be reprogrammed. Ok, called Ford in Tampa FL, after doing research about recalls on this site. According to them there has never been a recall. They asked me if I called a week ago because someone had the same problem. I told them "no." I search this system with my VIN, no reports.... How could this be when I am experiencing the same symptoms and my car was manufactured between these years. I am hopeful that this is an oversight and that Ford didn't realize the extent of this problem. It's dangerous. Meanwhile my car is 3 years old with 52k.... pcm/tcm shouldn't be a factor. Currently I have filed with the NHTSA and FORD themselves.

I just bought a 2013 ford focus and on many occasions I was out in the garage and my car attempted to start on its own. Took it back to dealership. They say it doesn't happen. I recorded it happening. Are there any other people who have experienced this problem? My sister bought a 2014 when it hit 4,000 it started to do the same thing. The loaner car is a 2014. It also is trying to start on its own.
