    Buick extended warranty coverage

Buick’s official extended warranties are called Buick Protection Plans. These plans are generally available in terms of up to eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. They will effectively extend your Buick factory warranties. For context, all new Buicks come with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

You can only purchase Buick Protection Plans from a Buick dealership, and not every dealership sells them. Also, most Buick vehicles are eligible for protection as long as they’re still within the factory warranty period by at least 1,000 miles or 30 days.

    Buick extended warranty plans

Buick Protection Plans come in three coverage levels: Powertrain, Silver and Platinum. Powertrain plans cover around 200 parts and are available in terms of up to 8 years/120,000 miles. Silver plans cover around 400 parts and Platinum plans cover around 1,500 parts. Both Silver and Platinum plans are available in terms of up to 8 years/100,000 miles.

The following table breaks down what coverage you can expect for each Buick extended warranty tier.

    Plan deductibles

Buick states that customers can choose their deductible with an extended warranty, although it does not specify what the deductible options are. Many extended warranties offer the choice of a $0 or $100 deductible. Lower deductibles often increase the price of the warranty plan, while higher deductibles require you to pay every time you make a claim.

    Buick extended warranty benefits

All Buick Protection Plans feature the following benefits:

    • 24-hour roadside assistance: This includes battery service, flat tire assistance, towing, emergency fuel delivery (up to three gallons, three times per year), emergency fluid delivery (cost of fluids not included) and lockout assistance. You’ll get coverage for up to $100 per occurrence.

    • Rental car coverage: You’ll get up to $40 daily for up to 10 days while your Buick is in the shop for a covered repair.

    • Trip interruption protection: You’ll get up to $200 per day for up to five days if your Buick experiences a covered breakdown more than 100 miles from home.

Overall, these are above-average benefits for an extended auto warranty from a major manufacturer.

    Buick extended warranty cost

A Buick extended warranty costs around $3,500 to $4,200 total for a premium plan, or about $800 to $1,300 per year, based on the quotes we collected.

For context, the average extended auto warranty costs $1,000 per year of coverage for a bumper-to-bumper plan. Generally, costs will vary depending on the make, model, current mileage and age of your vehicle.

    Buick Protection Plan costs

We collected quotes from a dozen Buick dealers around the country. The quotes in the table below are the lowest quotes we received. All plans include a $100 deductible.

Keep in mind that Buick Protection Plans start at the original in-service date. That means that the seven-year Platinum plan for a 2023 Buick Enclave really only provides 4 years/64,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper protection after the factory warranty expires. So, you’d pay close to $1,000 per year of coverage, which is average.

    Buick third-party extended warranty cost

To compare costs, we collected quotes from third-party extended warranty providers. We collected quotes for similar coverage from Endurance, olive and Zurich and compared them with the quotes we received from Buick dealers for similar coverage.

Buick extended warranty terms and conditions

The Buick Protection Plan terms and conditions are pretty standard for an extended auto warranty. You should always read your warranty contract carefully before signing.

    Preexisting conditions

As with virtually all extended warranties, preexisting conditions won’t be covered. Note that warranty providers sometimes deny claims on the basis that you can’t prove an issue wasn’t preexisting, which is why it’s best to get a dealer inspection report (about $150) at the same time as any extended auto warranty purchase.

    Routine maintenance

As part of your warranty agreement, you must keep up with the routine Buick maintenance schedule listed in your owner's manual. Buick may ask for proof that you kept up with regular maintenance before approving any claim, so be sure to keep your receipts.

    Coverage exclusions

Auto warranties only cover the cost of fixing factory or workmanship defects. They won’t cover:

    • Part failures due to damage, negligence, misuse or abuse

    • Regular wear-and-tear items, like brake pads and windshield wiper blades

    • Routine maintenance

    • Most cosmetic items

Platinum plans also won’t cover any part listed under the exclusions section in your contract.

Buick extended warranty pros and cons

    Pros

    • Offers up to eight years or 100,000 miles of coverage
    • Above-average benefits like trip interruption and roadside assistance
    • Covers up to 1,500 parts

    Cons

    • High cost per year (around $1,000) compared to expected repair costs
    • Limited availability — some dealers do not sell the Silver or Powertrain plans
    • Coverage starts from mile zero, reducing effective coverage time
    • Buicks are already reliable, making the cost potentially unnecessary

Is a Buick extended warranty worth it?

A Buick extended warranty may be worth it if your model has below-average expected reliability, if you expect to spend less on an extended warranty than on future repairs or if you don’t mind paying a few thousand dollars for extra peace of mind.

While Buick extended warranty costs tend to be around average, you’d need to get about $1,000 in repairs per year for the length of your warranty to break even on a plan. If that doesn’t seem likely with your model, getting an extended warranty likely isn’t worth it.

When a Buick extended warranty doesn’t make sense

If any of the following apply, you probably don’t need an extended warranty on your Buick:

      • You have emergency savings for repair costs

      • You plan to sell your vehicle within five to six years

      • You trust Buick’s above-average reliability

      Buick reliability

In J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick ranked No. 2 out of 28 automakers, just behind Lexus. Buick earned a score of 160 problems per 100 (PP100) vehicles, which is far better than the study average of 204 PP100.

In comparison, RepairPal ranks Buick No. 13 out of 32 car brands, giving it a score of 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. It reports that Buicks tend to cost around $608 per year to maintain, which is below the average of $652 per year across all models.

      What Buick drivers say

Customers on our site have reported mixed feelings about their Buicks, with some reporting frequent issues with brand-new vehicles.

For instance Nichole, a reviewer from North Carolina, said: “I bought my 2025 Buick Envision in April of 2025 brand new. Since then[,] I have had the head replaced, a fuel injector, and front cover gasket. My vehicle had been out of my possession[,] in all[,] for over 3 months.”

Blaire, a reviewer from Mississippi, also reported issues with a new 2025 Buick Enclave.

“I purchased a 2025 Buick Enclave in March 2025,” Blaire said. “From the start, it had electrical problems. The wipers and headlights stopped working the day I took it home. We returned it, only to have to bring it back again because the volume control stopped working. At 600 miles, the transmission failed and needed replacement. After having it back for about a month, all electrical components failed, and the vehicle went haywire.”

      FAQ

How do you cancel a Buick extended warranty?

You can cancel a Buick extended warranty within 30 days of purchase for a full refund, provided that you haven’t filed any claims. If you have filed a claim or it’s been longer than 30 days, you’ll receive a prorated refund minus any claims paid.

Can I buy a Buick extended warranty online?

No, you can’t buy a Buick extended warranty online, so you’ll need to contact a dealer that sells them. Note that not every dealership sells them, and that some dealerships only partner with third-party warranty companies.

      Is Buick’s extended warranty transferable?

Yes, Buick’s extended warranty is transferable to a new owner within 30 days of the sale. You’ll need to contact Buick to transfer and pay a $50 transfer fee. Being able to transfer coverage to a private buyer can potentially increase the resale value of your Buick or make it easier to find a prospective buyer.

Is Buick’s extended warranty better than third-party coverage?

Buick’s extended warranty may be better than third-party coverage because repairs are handled at Buick dealerships using factory-trained technicians and approved parts. Third-party plans may offer lower prices or longer terms, but they can come with more exclusions or approval requirements.

Can you buy a Buick extended warranty after purchase?

Yes, you can usually buy a Buick extended warranty after purchasing the vehicle, as long as it meets age and mileage requirements. Coverage generally costs more the longer you wait, and options may be limited once the factory warranty expires.

Does Buick’s extended warranty cover electronics?

Buick’s extended warranty plans cover electronics, depending on the plan you get. Both the Platinum and Silver plans cover electrical components, but only the Platinum plan covers high-tech components, audio and navigation.

Can I use my Buick extended warranty at any repair shop?

No, you can’t use your Buick extended warranty at any repair shop since you’ll need to have repair work done at an authorized dealership if you purchase a Buick Protection Plan.

How do I file a Buick extended warranty claim?

To file a Buick extended warranty claim, contact your dealer or the claims team over the phone. They will guide you through what materials you need to submit your claim.
