What is olive?

olive offers auto warranty solutions through vehicle service contracts and mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI). While it covers cars traveling in the U.S. or Canada, the vehicle must be registered in the United States. Personalized plan options ensure drivers only pay for what they need. Unlike some of its competitors, olive has no waiting period and does not require any vehicle inspections.

How does olive work?

olive’s online quote tool is available 24/7, allowing you to buy a policy online at any time. If you prefer to speak with someone, their coverage advocates are available to help secure coverage.

olive has three plans and three deductibles to choose from, giving you nine total options to purchase. Once you select a plan, the rate is locked in for three years. You can cancel anytime.

If you need a repair:

  1. Take your vehicle to an ASE-certified center or dealership.
  2. Provide your olive digital ID card to the service manager.
  3. The shop contacts olive to authorize the repair.
  4. You pay your deductible and any non-covered items, and olive pays the rest directly to the shop.

olive plans

Olive offers three distinct coverage levels, each available with three deductible options ($100, $250 or $500).

  • Powertrain: This plan covers the most expensive vehicle components, including every lubricated part of your transmission and engine, water and oil pumps, thermostat, factory turbocharger and more.
  • Powertrain Plus: This mid-tier plan provides coverage for everything included in the Powertrain plan, plus coverage for power steering, front suspension, brakes and air conditioning components.
  • Complete Care: This is the highest level of coverage, similar to a manufacturer’s bumper-to-bumper warranty. It covers almost all factory-installed mechanical and electrical parts, including high-tech items like backup cameras and transmission control modules.

olive prices

olive’s pricing varies based on the year, make, model, mileage and location of your vehicle. According to the company, average plans range between $20 and $80 per month. Choosing a higher deductible ($500) will typically lower your monthly premium, while a $100 deductible will increase it.

Because rates are locked for a three-year term, your payment won't increase even if you file multiple claims during that period. Always read the terms and conditions to understand exactly what is covered and any exclusions based on each plan.

It’s committed to not “nickel-and-diming” its customers and provides multiple plans to choose from. olive makes things convenient for customers by not requiring a vehicle inspection or waiting period when you sign up, and it lets you take your vehicle to any ASE-verified location or dealership instead of forcing you to choose from mechanics in a network.

Robyn: Hi, my name is Robyn. I live in California. And what got me interested in olive is my extended car warranty was coming to an end. The alternatives that I had considered were, a few of them were Carchex, Select, and of course the warranty company that I had already been with. And after researching olive, I found that they offered everything that I needed. The purchase process was pretty easy. Everything was online. I went ahead and researched everything. However, there were questions that I needed answered, so I did go ahead and call. They answered quite rapidly. The woman on the other line was very patient with me. I had so many questions. She went through every question I had, answered them. We mirrored each other on the internet so she could see what I was looking at. I could see what she was offering. The customer service was excellent. And because of that, that's why I chose olive. My purchase with olive I believe was worth it. My extended warranty was coming to an end. The company that I was with had offered me a warranty that was not comparable to what olive did. And their prices were much higher. I was able to get a lower price and a better policy with olive.

Inconsistent Coverage and Strict Contract Loopholes. I’ve had a frustrating experience with this provider regarding a recurring issue with my car's active grill shutter. While my first claim was honored, subsequent claims for the exact same part were denied, costing me $3,200 out of pocket. The deciding factor? The use of the word "corrosion" in the mechanic's report. While technically "in the contract," they use this specific terminology as an instant-denial trigger. Potential customers should be aware that even if a part fails, the slightest mention of environmental wear will result in a rejected claim.

The absolute worst. No one made it clear that the policy needed to be mentioned right away before the work was performed and now they won't let me submit my claim for any reimbursement at all. So now I'm paying a monthly payment yet still eating the cost of $720 of work done that is absolutely covered under my policy. Not helpful and not clear on the process.

I recently signed up for mechanical breakdown coverage with Olive, and the experience has been great so far. What stood out to me right away was how clear and transparent everything is. The terms are easy to understand, with no hidden surprises — you know exactly what you're paying for and what’s included. I really appreciated the ability to customize the plan to fit my needs. You can choose your deductible and coverage level, which helps avoid paying for anything unnecessary. Another big plus is that the rate stays locked in for three years — that kind of stability is rare and definitely reassuring. The sign-up process took just a few minutes, and the coverage kicked in the very next day. No waiting period, no hassle, no endless checks. Super convenient. I also like that the plan can be canceled or even transferred to another owner without any fees. That flexibility is something I value a lot.

What a terrific company. Highly rated on the BBB. In California if you are in search of an extended warranty for your car, you must buy a mechanical breakdown insurance policy if using a third party. Vehicle protection plans can only be sold by dealers. After researching the MBI companies that are available in California, it became evident that Olive is the best and most reasonable on the market, with great coverage options. I dealt with Daniel, Lina and Ava and they were all spectacular in representing Olive and providing the necessary information with stellar customer service. Highly recommended.

This warranty has been a terrible investment. I bought a 3 year warranty for my wife's 2018 pilot and it's never been used, but I tried to use it for what the Honda dealership said was a torn boot on both sides of the front axel. Well first it was hard to get the right person on the phone and then they said that they needed a third party to come out and take pictures for a $900.00 job, which I would be paying $250 of it for the deductible. Well they couldn't tell when he would be there and it could take up to 72 hours before they get out, well 72 hours roll by and no inspector, meanwhile I rented a car for 3 days for nothing. I would never recommend Olive car warranty for a tricycle. They call me and had the nerve to ask if I wanted to extend my warranty, what a joke.

Purchased warranty from Olive for a 2019 Chevrolet 1500 pickup. Within a few months of purchase started hearing a noise while driving. I thought it was possibly the tires. Purchased and installed a set of tires. Test drove the truck and still the same noise. At this point stopped driving the truck. After making an appointment with a Chevy dealership. I hauled (not drove) this truck to a dealer. The dealer filed a claim to repair the transmission. Olive denied my claim. The reason they gave me was due to the new tires. I explained that the tires were just installed and were clearly brand new. I also explained that that the noise was heard prior to the new tire install. I even sent receipts proving everything I was claiming and Olive still denied. This company will deny your claim for any excuse they can make up. BTW I have other trucks with extended warranties. I've never had this problem with them.

This company is awful and should not be open. They took my money and then told me, that in order to get my refund, I would need to package and send the engine back and pay my mechanic to take it out. That's another $1,200.00 dollars. This is after I had already paid to have it installed. Refused to call me back timely and always had to refer to their warehouse. The better business bureau will hear about them. They said the engine was tested 16 times. That's not true. My engine was spewing oil everywhere and it had been tampered with. These are criminals, and I am out of over $2,000.00 with no working engine.

There are no one star reviews for this scam? Seriously? This "warranty" service needs one thing..a class action lawsuit. Every claim that I can dig up regarding them (my own experience as well) involves a denial due to "pre existing" conditions.. although I was never told what that "condition" was. Their online A+ "reviews" all rave about how easy it is to obtain a policy. Who writes a review about that? Where are the reviews about actually filing a claim and receiving repairs? Something here is very wrong.

So, after looking at different companies for months, I chose Olive. The premium, which I thought was ridiculously high, was still ok considering the "alleged" plethora of things covered. They also advertise "Pay today, Covered tomorrow". Yeah, what a lie. So I decided to jump the gun since I'd been looking for awhile and my car was approaching 100,00 miles even though it's been worry-free from day one, had always run like a dream. Pulled the trigger, and as it turns out, 3 days later, after an hour of shuddering and jerking, my CVT left me stranded on the side of the road. Dead, no forward, no reverse, no movement. For anyone that knows, this is a death sign for a CVT, especially Nissan. Had it towed to the local dealer where the car was purchased. After their inspection and diagnostic runs, it threw the CVT failure code, along with the MIL on.

Called Olive, they sent an adjuster and when they couldn't even leave the parking lot and it stopped altogether, she said "Yep, total mechanical failure". Shop manager and adjuster reported it back to Olive who, after 2 days, said "Nope, it's preexisting. Sorry". It wasn't pre-existing, never had a day's issue from it until then. Carfax shows the car has been maintained perfectly, even had 2 CVT drain and refill services up to that point. Provided all service documentation and a video from when it started failing to shutting down altogether. Did that work? Nope. Adjusters notes say "Immediate mechanical failure". Did that matter? Nope.

They said "preexisting", meaning that it occurred from normal wear and tear. 1) if they had knowledge about Nissan's notorious issues with their CVTs up to 202, they'd know they're prone to failure due to faulty OEM design and parts. 2) If normal wear and tear constitutes preexisting, then what's the point of an after market protection plan?? ALL parts of all vehicles wear and tear, that's why we buy these plans!

I'm still going round and round with them, but short of suing, which would be a year's long process, I'm left with $7,000 to pay for a new CVT and no car. I can understand being suspicious of a claim being made a few days after it went into effect, but that's just what fate threw at me. But to counteract that, nearly 400 miles was put on the car between policy date and CVT failure. Anyone who knows a bad CVT very well knows you're not traveling 400 miles on one. Olive also claimed that no CVT will just die, they always show signs. Not true at all. If they had looked at the lawsuit against Nissan regarding this, they'd see hundreds of cases where CVTs have instantly failed and left people stranded.

Mike, one of the managers, offered no help. He didn't care. He said "If the shop can show it's a complete mechanical failure then we'll cover it". Shop manager says "The car won't move in any gear, what more can I do to show? I'm a master Nissan tech and I'm telling you the code and MIL register the date it was towed into our facility". Olive: "Sorry, we need to see something broken". Absolutely absurd.

Long story short... run, don't walk away from this company. Read their BBB reviews and look at their BBB rating. Long history of denying claims based on their definition of preexisting. Not much I can do aside from filing a BBB complaint, which I'll do now. Please folks, do NOT touch this company. You're much better off with Carshield, Endurance or Fidelity. Don't be another victim of these shady people (including QBE).

Updated on 05/22/2024: This has not been resolved. They still don't call back and why should they? THEY TOOK MY MONEY.

Original review: So here is my experience with Olive. You can make your own decision after reading, I purchased an extended warranty in 2021, at that time I chose to pay the full amount of 3 years. I have a 2013 Mustang. I had a few problems in 2022 and they were responsive to my claim with no problems. Now it's 2024 and my policy is up in May 1 month from this review, my check engine light came on right before my smog was due, so I took my car to a Ford dealer, it sat there for 3 days with nothing done so I took it out and went to local shop, I told them I had an extended warranty and they looked at my car along with the light on.

I also have the pass. side window not working and my heater is inop. They were hesitant to work on my car but I said, "Don't worry. I have Olive.com." So they took my car in to work on it, they did their thing and when it came time to get a approval they were told that my warranty was on hold and couldn't get approval. This was on a Monday so I call and was told the something that it was an IT problem, now I paid for their complete car care coverage with rental car and all bells and whistles, I thought, "Only a couple days. No problem." Now it has turned into 10 days without my car.

No rental and as of today they still haven't tried to resolve their IT problem with no call back from them even stating that they are working on the problem, when I call I get passed to different departments with a lot of silence from the people on the phone, my thinking is that I only have 1 month left and my account has been flagged as to not fulfill their contract with me, let me add that I called to renew my policy for another 3 years being a repeat customer and was told no. They won't do it because it's a 2013. Too old. My miles are 59000.

I talked to a manager at customer service and was told that there was not much she could do for me because it not her department that is having a problem with my account and was told to call back in a couple days. Still without my car or a rental car. So what's really going on with this company and why was my account flagged in the first place, why is it taking so long to fix their IT problem? I paid for 3 years in advance and still have 30 days before it expires or do I?

Leah, the lady from olive, called me right away and she was really awesome. She sent everything and walked me through how to do everything. She made sure that I understood what I was getting myself into and she broke down each of their packages and what it would pertain to my car in terms of services. She let me ask questions about what was covered, so it would help me not to pick the wrong one. She answered all the questions that I had that I signed up the next day pretty much just on that conversation. We were on the phone for 45 minutes. She was very cordial in the way that she brought things up to me and she didn't make me feel stupid.

The warranty is very affordable and in the three years of the extended warranty, when I looked at it, it was the cost of what I paid once at a mechanic for my old car. And it's still not running. So that sold me because of that fact that if it's something that insurance won't cover, my extended warranty will cover. It also makes it better that I can bring my car to the dealership that I choose. When I was discussing extended warranties with my dad, he told me that there's a warranty company where you had to bring your car to a specific shop. Since I'm in a small town, it could be way out of town far away and there's no possible way that you can get it there, and they won’t cover a rental.

Aside from that, the system is all virtual, so I could use it at any time, 24 hours a day, in submitting anything that may or may not happen. And it covers the whole nation. So if I'm on a road trip and my car breaks down, they would still cover me and that is pretty cool. I can go to any place for any service, and I just submit the claim through them. I could also do it from my phone and submit it while my car's at the mechanic. And olive will cover everything. It's so hard to get on the phone with somebody that it makes it a lot easier for me to do everything at my leisure. If I can just set a reminder to do that once I get home, it'll get done because I can submit it. It's not like I'm having a time crunch on top of it.

Leah also told me to print out the policy and keep it in the car so it's handy for me, but everything will be digital as well so I wouldn't have to worry. She pretty much told me what to say to my man to let him agree to me getting it and she gave me the words. It's also nice that she didn't even bother me to leave a review. Usually, they try to do that right away. She just told me to give her a call at any time that I have any issues with anything.
