We have had AARP Roadside Assistance for several years. On November 14, 2022, I had a flat tire on my way to work. I called for a tow truck and a provider was contacted. After waiting a while, I checked my phone for the providers information only to find that the tow had been cancelled. I called back and was told that the provider did not cover the area I was in and another had been contacted. That provider also cancelled because I was on an interstate and I was told they could not service me. I was told to call 911 and tell the State Police what had happened and they would assist me.
I called them and was informed that the tow company could, in fact, tow me as it was not the turnpike but they would send a tow truck and trooper. That tow cost me $176 for one mile. Since I could only get towed to the nearest service station and not to the repair shop I needed, I had to have the spare cut off my vehicle and put on at that shop. That was an additional $50. I called the next day to find out how to be reimbursed and sent the receipts right away.
I called several weeks later to find out how long the refund would take. I spoke to someone who said my paperwork had not been received and transferred me to someone else, only to be cut off. I called back and spoke to someone who also said that you had not received my paperwork and I could send it through email so it could be processed faster. I was given a ridiculous amount of information to re-submit. Once I hung up the phone, I went to send an email only to find that a reimbursement check had been issued that day. It was for only $130. The amount I submitted for was $226.
I called back and was told that a complaint would be filled and I could expect an answer in 10-14 days. There are so many things here that don't make sense to me. Why didn't anyone call to tell me that my original tow was cancelled? How do your customer service reps not know what's going on with a claim? Two different people told me that my paperwork had never been received when a refund had actually been issued. What kind of roadside assistance company doesn't know what roads they can access? If they had, I would not have had to pay for anything. I have gotten multiple replies, however, they all contain conflicting information. I expected to be fully reimbursed since this was all a failure on their end. To date I am still waiting to hear back from my January 15th email.
Call at 2 pm--at 6 pm still no tow truck. Say we had to find our own way to the location where we wanted the vehicle taken because we could not ride with the tow truck driver. The dealer's service department was closed by then. Still no truck to tow us. We had to leave our vehicle in a parking lot.

I should have known the first time I used them that this was a mistake. I had a flat at my condo and was at the end of my contract and hadn't used them yet so I thought, why not. I paid for it, why not use it. Guy shows up in a Honda with another guy and a dog. Guy 2 takes dog for a walk. I'm cooking dinner with people over so I left him alone. I come back and he seems to having trouble. My lug nuts have plastic caps you need to take off first. He's just wailing on them wondering why the lug nuts aren't coming off. Broke all of them.
What was the last straw is I needed a jump start. It was a little late so I didn't want to call friends or family. Was told ETA of 1 hour. 3 hours later guy shows up in a Hyundai. I've never had roadside jump me from their own car with cables. I mean it was by pure chance that my neighbor was gone and the space was open next to me. What was your plan B? Not to mention he was lucky it was my 4 cylinder and not my SUV. No way is a Hyundai Accent going to jump a 6 or 8 cylinder. Stay away. Stay far away.
Worse service ever. My husband with Muscular Dystrophy, my daughter and 3 kids were stranded by the side of the road for 9 hours 10/15/21. I have tried numerous times to speak to a supervisor about this experience but all I get is a runaround. When I finally got a person in Cust Service they conveniently couldn't access my account with the phone numbers I've had for over 20 years. My email didn't work either.
Allstate AARP roadside assistance is better suited for non emergency service. Roadside assistance is not something you want to use but when you do you need a dependable service provider. I have had to for as much as 8 hours to be towed. However, on my last emergency service, I called at 10:30am but needed them to wait until noon before dispatching the tow truck so my wife who was teaching class could get outside to meet them. They said OK. Truck arrived 11:15am and because there was no one there they cancelled the towing, charged me for a use and then tried to charge me $235 to have it towed.
When you have and emergency on the road, you need a competent emergency service provider. The advertising doesn't match the service capability. I have to advise not to use the AARP towing service if you need emergency roadside assistance. I do recommend them for driveway assistance. If you just need your car towed from home to the repair shop.
It seems to me that the dispatcher does not try to find a service station near to the caller who is looking for assistance. Maybe they are not located in the area where the caller is calling from and do not have resources that would enable them to find a service station closer. They called 3 different service stations for me. The first one cancelled stating their truck broke down along the way.... (BTW they used this excuse once before last year when I was also awaiting help). By the time I got the 2nd service call, I had been waiting for 2 hrs. I was told that the service truck would be arriving in 20 min yet they were coming from several miles away and that was through rush hour traffic around Boston.
While I was waiting for the 2nd truck to arrive, a 3rd call came through from another service station situated only 15 min away and in the same town that I was calling from. While waiting for that 3rd truck, I called the 2nd station to see if they were still on their way to me, and they were. So I cancelled them. From 1:20 when I called to 4:00 when I finally got service. And my car was in my driveway needing a battery jump. Lucky for me that I wasn't out on the highway waiting all that time for help.
Car failed, needed towing. Was out of town. Chatted Aarp for assistance. Was told to call towing myself. Had no writing tool. To write # Borrowed from stranger. Number given wrong number. I had to search on phone by self for towing service. Having to call daily to get reimbursement for service now x10 days. Finally found live assistant to help. Spent total of 3 hours on hold and even left name and number on recording. No return call. That was 5 days ago. Am looking for new company to serve me. This one is worthless.to others,: Beware. Look for company who will serve you when in need.
I got roadside through AARP then needed a tow. I send in receipt to claim department and never got reimbursed. It's going on 35 call and 10 months waiting. No reimbursement in sight. On top of that I cancelled their insurance and they charged my card for renewal anyway after I strongly told them not to. It was hard to get that fraudulent payment back. Maybe you have luck with them but my experience they're scam artists. They're scum!!!
I would advise anyone thinking of choosing AARP roadside assistance to think twice. They make it cancelling difficult to impossible and they'll charge your card automatically. I wasted 2 and a half hours of my time yesterday trying to get someone on the actual phone, and this is after two days prior talking to someone to cancel the membership. I got a letter in the mail stating they were going to charge my card again for another year. After finally getting someone on the phone as a result of trying for 2 1/2 hours, I was told that it was cancelled and that they would refund my money from the prior year because I've been with Amac since 2019, whom I highly recommend. (Amac doesn't have the liberal agenda that AARP has so that's where I choose to spend my $$)..
After all yesterday, this morning I get an email and the subject line is "Cancellation Request" so I got excited that all my time spent yesterday paid off... Nope! As I read the email it stated "If you still wish to discontinue your membership, call this number...." Oh my goodness, so I got to call again today to submit the request. He still couldn't give me a confirmation number for my records that it had been cancelled, but that I would receive a letter in 7-10 days. Just a ridiculous way to treat long-time customers who've paid you for years but wish to move on to another company. AARP is awful and I've changed my opinion forever about them because of this experience.
Member since 1992. Engine on car would not start. AARP RSA sent truck from Towing company to jump start battery. After some difficulty was able to start engine and get out to road. Engine then failed completely. Could not get Towing company back even though they were less than a block away. Stranded in middle of highway with no electrical function at all functions including emergency flasher lights were inoperable. Used emergency brake to prevent car from rolling backward. Speeding traffic on both sides and horns sounding from the back of my stranded vehicle.
Called AARP back at least four times on my cell phone. Each time I was cut off. Each time they requested my membership number. Several times they said the number did not exist. Asked for my telephone number and was told once that this was not my telephone number. Gave other numbers but all were unsuccessful. Could not keep AARP personnel on the line to help resolve the difficulty. Personnel were very curt and unhelpful. At one point was instructed to connect with website but I do not have internet in my car. Was also at one point sent a non-functioning number. Police finally were able to push me to the side of the highway. Finally I called the original towing company (which AARP had initially sent out) and was advised that they had no authorization to tow car and the cost would be my responsibility. User's recommendation: Get another roadside assistance company.
