My husband & I went on a Viking River cruise in July. We purchased a $1200 Trip Mate Insurance policy that was supposed to be "for any reason whatsoever". Our 1st flight was delayed and we missed our connection to Zurich. We arrived 10 hours late and had no luggage for another 24 hours. We missed the entire 1st day of the trip - and could not go to dinner since we didn't have a change of clothes. Trip Mate has had all of our paperwork since July and are giving us the runaround. We lost a whole day - that has to be worth something. But, Trip Mate keeps asking for more documentation and say they will expedite the claim. It's October and we still have not received anything - we're contacting the Better Business Bureau.

Warning: Do not buy an TRAVEL INSURANCE policy from TRIP MATE if you want them to reimburse you if you make a claim. I have been trying to get this company to pay out a claim for stolen baggage for almost 6 months. I have provided my passport, police report that was done with a translator (at my cost of course), my hotel receipts, receipts for lost items, credit card statements, my permanent residency status, car registration, driver's license, receipts. Offered to meet them for the past two weeks for a personal visit where I am staying in Mexico (they couldn't get someone to see me in all that time).

I have spent many many hours and expended lots of out of pocket costs on this claim. I think they have targeted my claim because I am in Mexico. Now they insist they still need an investigator to meet with me for a lengthy recorded interview, where and when they wish. I am now traveling in remote Mexico and they expect me to travel at my expense, of course, to a convenient location and time of their choice. More time required out of my travels and more expense! All in an attempt to get them to pay my claim which I am now sure they will deny no matter what. This is clearly a case of wear the insurance customer down with costly time consuming demand after demand.

This is what the insurance companies did with Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina customers and many others, and it usually works. It is an official cost saving policy!! Memos have been shown with business consultants advising this, believe it or not. Trip Mate Claims is pretty angry with me because I keep asking for verification that I am required to do these things per my contract, (which I am not) by the way. I won't just go away without payment or explanation. I am a disabled person and I am sick of these big corporations taking advantage of their customers. What they are doing is WRONG, and I am sure I am not the only person to whom they have done this. If you have an insurance complaint, fight it, and file an Insurance complaint with the Insurance Commission. I have done so and am waiting a response. SO BUYER BEWARE!! This could happen to you! DON'T BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE FROM THIS COMPANY - TRIPMATE!

I am handicap... I took a flight from Pittsburgh to Dallas. I took an insurance policy out, which was offered to me through the booking on my flight. When I landed in Dallas I was wheelchair from where I landed to my next flight which was to go to Abilene. They said that flight was boarded and ready to take off. I was put on standby for 6 hours. I was in total pain. I filed a claim and was denied. I believe that this insurance is a ripoff. Just another way to get your money.

I wish I could rate less than 1 star! Trip was with Smart Tours to S. Africa with my wife and grandson - a graduation gift for graduating University. A week before the trip my wife was diagnosed with cancer and had to start treatment immediately. I filed a claim. Whenever you call Trip Mate there is a long wait on the phone. Half an hour or an hour is not unusual. By this time you are very upset - I cannot imagine working there!!! EVERY TIME I was told the claim is in the final stages. It was not of course. The claim was for the trip and was over $11,000.

I called Smart Tours to complain about their ins co. They were marvelous and sent us $7,000 even though their contract stated that they did not have to because of the short notice. So Trip Mate was off the hook for the whole $11,000. But still they delayed. Every time I heard it is being finalized. Once they said the check has been signed and you should have it in 3 days. That was weeks or months ago. Today I was told again that the check was ready to be mailed, but it had missed the post!!! The paper work they require is huge. And we e-mailed it twice, and I copied it and mailed it in the post too. They asked for more. We sent it.

Then after "it is being finalized" for about the 15th time we discovered that they had contacted more of my wife's doctors - doubtless looking for one willing to say whatever it was they wanted to hear! It has been 4 months now and about to go into the 5th month. The stress of my wife's cancer is horrendous, but they don't care about that. Obviously they hope you will give up, and I might have, but we need the money to pay for doctors, operations, hospitals. Any further trips, and we travel a lot, will not be with any company that uses Trip Mate. But right now we need to get her cured. Please God.

Went on a trip with my son's school for 10 days March 31 to April 10, 2015. Went the entire trip without our luggage because it was lost. Luggage was finally returned to us on the 13th of April. Filed a claim with Trip Mate on 4/22/2015. Come June they requested more information. Within 48 hours I sent them the information requested and never heard a thing. Would call to find out status and would get it has been sent to the claims department for final review. Finally after 5 months they say it is only worth $200 ($100 a piece) for going without my luggage the entire trip. They are extremely slow and don't have any customer service that can tell you anything and you can't talk to the claims people.

I would never again use Trip Mate travel insurance. On August 3rd of this year, we had to cancel our Viking River cruise due to my husband's hospitalization. We immediately completed all of their required forms and documentation - getting physician statements, dates, etc. - anything they asked for. That was sent to them within a week of our cancelation. Today is September 23rd and we are STILL waiting for our refund! I have called numerous times and just get the runaround. The claim online shows that final payment was printed on 9/11 and their answer today was that they only mail checks out on "certain days". They hold a lot of checks and send at the same time. What's up with that? Now I'm supposed to wait and if I don't receive my check within 30 more days to call back and they will reissue the check. I am SO frustrated. Shame on Viking for using this company! Never again.

Do NOT, I say again, DO NOT use Trip Mate as your travel Insurance company!! They will ruin your trip. They look for EVERY loophole to get out of paying. We had a suitcase that was damaged on our trip by TSA. There was a hole in the corner of the suitcase. Clothes fell out, we lost valuable possessions. We didn't realize it until we got home and started unpacking the next day. We assessed our situation, figured out what happened and contacted Trip Mate. Lost and damaged property is covered in our policy however, Trip Mate began asking for all kinds of documentation, receipts for clothes and the suitcase, when the stuff was bought, where it was lost, did we contact the airline and to provide them with this documentation.

We spent forever getting this stuff together for them. We presented it to them. They said it wasn't good enough and they asked for more stuff, so we spent more time getting it for them, again it wasn't good enough. They did this to us a million times and then in the end when they ran out of stuff to ask for, they say "we're not covering it." This is a BS company. I am going to the BBB as well. I am warning everyone to stay away from them. I encourage you to not go with these people. If anything happens they will want NOTHING to do with you. They want you to pay them but as soon as they have to stick to their end of the bargain they do EVERYTHING in their power to avoid paying. DO NOT use Trip Mate.

My wife and I are very frequent travellers, at least every other month we are going somewhere and have used several travel insurance companies to include Allianz, Travel Guard, Visa, USAA, there was one we used from Hotwire, etc. None of them have EVER given us this much trouble. Trip Mate is a scam, they are greedy people. DO NOT mess with them. They have cost us about 300 dollars. I hope to cost them MUCH, MUCH more with the reviews I am about to blow up social media and the BBB with, but what's more, I am hoping to help you. I know the stresses of flying and a horrible travel insurance company you cannot count on is the last thing you need. Do not mess with Trip Mate. Thanks.

My first experience with them was when I had insurance on a Bahamas flight with JetBlue in February of 2013. My house was severely damaged due to a nor'easters and we had to deal with moving out, gas companies, electric, etc. and flood insurance so we cancelled our trip to the Bahamas which was scheduled a few days later. When making a claim with Trip Mate, they told us that the weather for the day of the storm that damaged my home had been predicted so they therefore denied reimbursing us for the cancelled vacation flight. I guess we are supposed to plan on home losses now, according to Trip Mate.

Second time we were turned down and angry with Trip Mate was for our return flight in September 2015 from Italy. Our travel company Collette neglected to tell us about a schedule change they heard about 9 days before our departure from Olbia, Sardinia. Our scheduled flight had been rescheduled due to airline strike problems. Anyway, since we were not notified of the change, we arrived at the airport later than the rescheduled flight which was rescheduled due to a cancellation of the flight we were originally scheduled to take. We were just asking for reimbursement for the expenses of staying at a hotel and eating.

Well, long story short, Trip Mate played their little game again and after much correspondence, said that my interruption of flight was not due to a cancellation but a rescheduled flight and that because Collette had reimbursed us some money for our inconvenience, that they were denying our claim. I would never get insurance with Trip Mate again and don't think there is not a conflict of interest when you purchase insurance with them through another company. If I were to get insurance again, it would be through an independent carrier, not one tied in with an airline or travel tour company. Thank you for letting me vent.

I purchase a flight to London for a summer abroad program for my son who attends one of the United States military academies. I purchased insurance, assuming it would cover the cost of the flight if my son was unable to go since there was no explanation of coverage anywhere. My son had a change in orders and was not able to travel at the scheduled time so I called to cancel. Student Universe was going to give me a voucher to be used within a year after I paid and exorbitant penalty and I inform them I had insurance. They gave me a number to call. The person from Trip Mate told me change in orders was covered and to fill out a form and send it along with an explanation letter from his CO.

After 4 weeks I got a letter explain what was "actually" covered, and change in military orders wasn't on their brief list. After several calls and requests to speak to a supervisor, Darcie told me was that if I felt I had been misled I could file an appeal in writing where I would have to wait several more weeks maybe months. Basically, I paid $65.95 to a company who never had any intentions refunding any money. Trip Mate should be ashamed of their misleading practices and especially ashamed of their treatment of the soldiers and sailors who serve this country who must obey orders.

In October of 2014 I was diagnosed with a health condition that prevented my taking the trip. Trip Mate has still not paid my claim even though they say on their website that its final payment was "entered" on August 6 and final payment was "printed" on August 13, 2015. It has taken two calls on my behalf from Grand Circle to get any action out of them and I still don't have a check. Their phone is always busy. I was on hold for 30 minutes several times. They said to leave a message and they would phone back but they never did.

Updated on 09/23/2015: I finally got my travel refund after filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of Kansas City. I recommend that folks struggling with Trip Mate go right to the BBB for action. The company responded quickly as soon as the BBB contacted them on my behalf.

My fiancé at the time & I decided to book a trip to Maui Hawaii in February for our honeymoon in April 2015. Our travel agent made all the arrangements and then asked us if we wanted to purchase travel insurance for the trip. At first we immediately said no but then changed our minds while still in the purchasing stage, deciding that it wasn't too much more money and reasoning that you never know what can happen. We are so glad that we did since my new husband got really ill a day after arriving on Maui and had to be ambulance the next day to the nearest hospital for IV fluids and tests. The ambulance alone cost us almost $1,000 after his company insurance paid their portion, and tests and such cost us another almost $150.

I had read some negative reviews about Trip Mate Insurance but our experience with them was great. I was sure to provide them with all the information, bills, EOBs from our Company's Insurance and receipts showing what we had actually paid out of pocket. I was able to print out Trip Mate forms online, filled them out and mailed them using the Post Office's Certified Mail delivery service. We just received a check from Trip Mate for the full out-of-pocket amount that we ended up paying to the hospital and ambulance company. It took less than three months for them to issue the check. We are so glad we got the travel insurance with Trip Mate and most likely would do so again.

In June of this year I was afforded the opportunity of a lifetime... to spend my 65th Birthday on June 8th in Rio Brazil. Subsequently I was able to get a week off from my job & fund my trip. I have always bought Travel Insurance in the past... & this time was no exception, although I had never previously filed a claim. Trip Mate was the Insurance offered by CheapOair. Unfortunately the flight from Los Angeles to Miami was cancelled & eventually I was rerouted thru New York but had to wait another entire day to resume my trip to Rio.

Ultimately my 65th Birthday was spent in a Hotel in N.Y. & I missed all the celebrations friends had planned for me in Rio. Because my trip was "interrupted" thru no fault of my own I rescheduled my return to make up time lost & lodged a claim for the cost of a new ticket.... only to have my claim denied after a 2 (two) month period. How is this possible & is this considered "normal" procedure? If so.... why would anybody ever be duped into buying Travel Insurance?

Purchase the travelers insurance just in case the unexpected happened. Well it did, my employer informed me in early May that I would be working at the time I had the trip scheduled. I immediately called Travelocity to cancel trip. Travelocity handled cancelation promptly. They instructed me to contact Trip Mate. After contacting them and receiving the necessary paperwork to be completed. They so IMPOLITELY called and with this obviously rehearsed statement, tell me they cannot refund my monies. Again I made this cancelation nearly 60 days prior to scheduled travel. I advise, recommend or simply say to anyone. Do NOT acquire travelers insurance through this company. I purchased travel insurance because the airline I chose did not offer any refund or change policy. A few days prior to my flight to France I went into the hospital with what appeared to be a heart attack (it was not fortunately). I was released from the hospital the morning of the day I was to fly with the caution from the hospital that flying was not a good idea for 5 days. (I had had an angiogram and there was risk of bleeding from the artery that had been used to insert a catheter into my heart).

I filed all the requested paperwork with Trip Mate and heard nothing from them for about a month. When I called them they said that the original ticket seller "CheapOAir" had not responded to their request for documentation of the purchase of insurance... I asked when they would follow up and they said that they wait a month to re-request info. A very long time in my estimation. I called CheapOAir and they sent the requested information by email within minutes that I forwarded to Trip Mate. I was then told by Darcie at Trip Mate that she would forward this info to her examiner and get back to me that afternoon. I have now waited another week and have called repeatedly to ask Darcie the outcome of her work. She now never takes my calls and has never called back. I have now asked American Express to reverse the charges due to the lack of performance of all parties on the selling side.

I have been using SU to buy flight tickets all the time, and almost every time I purchased they default Trip Mate insurance along with the ticket. I also purchased Trip Mate this time. It seemed a good deal because the insurance, which cost $ 49.95, could cover my cancellation fee of $200. Unfortunately I had to change the flight date after two weeks from purchase. I called Student Universe first, they said they had to charge me with $200 if I cancel the flight, and asked me to file a claim with Trip Mate to cover the cancellation fee. I called Trip Mate and they told me VERY CLEARLY THAT THEY COULD COVER MY CANCELLATION FEE, and asked me to fill out a form and send it back to them.

I did everything I should do. After almost ONE MONTH, today I finally got their call and was told that they couldn't cover my fee because I canceled the flight not because I WAS HIJACKED, GOT SICK, OR GOT KILLED. I checked again their insurance document and finally found a tiny little paragraph about their coverage for trip cancellation. This is completely insane! American Express referred me to these guys to purchase travel insurance for approx $399 for an upcoming trip to Europe. I was ready to pull the trigger but on a whim decided to check them out and saw all these complaints. In the past I have been burned by one of these scam companies that have no qualms with taking your hard earned money and then promptly abandoning you when you need their assistance.

My personal feeling is that the companies that recommend Trip Mate are equally guilty in this scam. They are taking a part of the proceeds clearly from the sale of "travel protection" insurance and see no issue with simply shipping their customers down the river. This is gross negligence and demonstrates a lack of integrity. I asked my travel agent at American Express to look at these reviews and tell me in good conscience how she could be recommending them. She simply stated that I had to do my own due diligence. In other words, "buyer beware".

I book my tickets through CheapOair.com on May 10, 2015 to Detroit MI. My husband was just released from the Hospital after major illness which left him with blood clot in left leg and several wounds to maintain. At the time of release I was not informed that he should not travel by air due to this condition. I was informed about this after speaking with his doctors after May 10, 2015.

I called CheapOair to see if I could get a shorter flight and they informed me that they could not change the ticket. I would have to cancel the ticket which was non-refundable and told me to check with the Travel Insurance I purchased with the tickets. I called them that same day on May 14, they informed me that I would have to complete the forms that they would send me via email and before I could file a claim I would have to actually cancel the tickets I purchased from CheapOair. I called back on May 15 2015 and cancelled the tickets.

The claim form said that I would have to get the doctors to sign off as to why my husband could not travel and cancel the tickets. I had an appointment coming up to the Cardiovascular Dr. Who completed the forms and sent them in to Trip Mate. I sent a copy also with the forms to their claims department. My husband had acute pancreatitis and was hospitalized for 4 months straight and the form gave details of what doctors and hospitals he was in attendance. After review of my claim Trip Mate denied my claim.

We are retired on disability and only bought the insurance because of medical issues which might come up. Besides my husband I am on a pacemaker and have an appointment that interfered with the trip which was to be on July 21, 2015. My pre-assisting appointment which I cannot cancel for my pacemaker check is scheduled every 6 months. We cannot afford to lose the $452.00 we paid the tickets. The fact that my husband is not able to fly is not a preexisting condition, since we were not informed us this until after we booked the flight. This company is a rip-off of the elderly and economically poor people.

I am planning to study abroad in Ghana in the fall. I bought my ticket through student universe and was offered insurance in case I would need to cancel or change my trip, or if the airport lost my bags. It seemed like a great idea so I paid the extra $50. I found out three weeks after buying the ticket that my housing situation had changed by one week, and going to a country I've never been to, I just wanted to change my flight by a week. I called student universe and they informed me that I would have to pay all these huge and expensive fees, but that my insurance should reimburse me, so I called to fill out a claim.

The woman that I first spoke to at Trip Mate very rudely told me multiple times that I should have gotten "cancel for any reason" insurance (which was never once offered to me before I was told I should have gotten it), and that my specific policy would do nothing for me, but that I could call back tomorrow and speak with a person from the claims department. I called again the next morning and was eventually transferred to speak with a woman from the claims department, who told me that if I filed the claim I would still get nothing. I explained to her that it says in my policy it's covered if I need to "travel via alternate travel," but somehow she got that it still was not.

Apparently having no housing in a foreign country is not considered a good enough reason to move a flight. I was definitely tricked into feeling secure by buying the insurance, when in reality it was a huge waste of my money. The paperwork and people I spoke to were very vague and unclear, but were eager to point out how they would do absolutely nothing for me. Not only did I waste the money for my plane ticket now, I also wasted the money on the insurance because it had been more than 14 days so there are no refunds and was not helpful. I will never buy travel insurance through Trip Mate ever again.

We bought insurance on a trip from US to Europe (Sacramento - San Francisco - Frankfurt-Rome flight). Our Sacramento to San Francisco flight got cancelled due to ATC/Weather related (per email from United Airlines) and we decided to drive 3 hours to San Francisco to get on the connecting flight - to catch our remaining flights. We drove our own car. Myself, wife and a 5 year old got to SFO and parked in their parking and made it within 15 minutes of plane leaving. On the way back, leaving from Rome - we found that United cancelled our flight back home all together, because on their system if someone missed a connection, it assumes passengers did not make it (weird but true).

We flew back to SFO to get our car to drive back to Sacramento. Keeping in mind that our paid trip included 3 tickets for Sacramento to San Francisco - round trip - that we did not use. So having got insurance from HR ROSS (TripMate serviced), we submitted a claim to cover for the missed (yet paid for) part of our trip, plus $380 in parking at SFO (which were way more expensive than Sacramento), plus $28 for gas (to drive there the Highlander SUV both ways) that I refilled tank once I arrived back at destination. Claim DENIED after 2 months of waiting!!!

So why get insurance if the insurance on your side says "Your trip delay did not fall over 6 hours of wait" and "You drove yourself" so we can not "cover for reasonable transportation expenses incurred"? Isn't gas and parking an incurred trip expense? Not to mention the ZERO we got on the fact that our flight was paid for and we did not use - for 3 people from Sac to SFO. United Airlines "kindly" gave us $35 per person. However an Expedia flight from Sac to SFO goes for $300 per person on any day. But that's the airline, not the insurance!! Even the airline accepted some part in this, but not the insurance. Again, TripMate is a joke. I would be curious as to how many policies they actually PAY OUT vs. how many people file. We should not have been denied - our flight was cancelled and we drove ourselves. Once star is too much!!

On a dream trip to Ireland in July 2014, two things went wrong. Bad weather caused a missed connection in New York, which caused me to arrive at noon on Day 3 of the tour. The group had left for the day and I could not meet up with them until that evening. The TripMate trap reimbursed only for one missed day and refused to reimburse for meals, as I had only the credit card statement identifying the restaurants in NY and one meal in Galway, Ireland. On tour Day 12, a large dog knocked me over reinjuring the area of a spinal fusion. I spent 40 hours at St. Luke Hospital in Kilkenny, because there was no radiologist working on the weekend. I discovered that TripMate does NOT accept collect calls placed by international operators, and in fact blocks its number from being called by an operator. I had no cell phone and a physician used his phone to call TripMate. No one from the ill-fate TripMate would call me.

I had to call Grand Circle Travel, which had sold the TripMate policy for $499 (and I assume earned a commission for the sale). GCT sent a regional director to deal with my claim and inability to get medical treatment or return to the US for competent treatment. After ten calls on her cell, she said, This is the last call I will make for you on my mobile. This was after TripMate refused to return my call and let me know what would be travel arrangements to Dublin. I had to stay another night in Kilkenny, and could have returned a day sooner. Adding insult to injury, Grand Circle charged about $645 for the post-trip Dublin extension, though no tours, meals, or other amenities provided on the main trip were provided. TripMate reimbursed only the lower daily rate for the main tour. Other insults were that the TripMate tourist trap does not reimburse for credit card international charges for hospital/medical, hotel, or travel expenses.

Moreover, it does not calculate euro conversions at the same rate the charge card bank uses and specifies on the card statement it's a much lower rate that benefits TripMate. TripMate does not cover connecting flights to the departure city, and would not allow an upgrade to business class for a person who injured the spine. Since Grand Circle promotes TripMate, I no longer consider that tour company, or its sister organization, Overseas Adventure Travel (GCT and OAT). I recommend that you avoid TripMate at all costs. It is a rip-off.

My husband and I purchased very expensive trip insurance through OAT, which has Trip Mate insurance available for customers booking OAT trips. We both got sick and missed a lot of meals as well as a lot of day trips/adventures, some of which were very expensive (ex. a rain forest canopy tour that we both had to miss cost another traveler not with our group, but wanting to go with our group $300).

Trip Mate is telling us that since our trip was "all inclusive" they can't reimburse us for anything we missed. They also aren't reimbursing us for medical expenses and say will only pay what our BC/Bs won't cover. Nowhere on the 20-some pages of forms we had to fill out did it tell us to first submit the claims to our regular health insurance, then they'd pay anything that our regular insurance didn't. I can't find any info. about what they DO cover - I have kept all my OAT info. and nowhere can I find what this insurance actually covers.

Maybe that's because they don't actually cover anything. They took our $800+ and now won't reimburse anything we are requesting, which is not an outrageous request. And of course the only person you can talk with is the "claims agent" who has been contracted to process their claims, not even a person at Trip Mate. I would never purchase insurance from them again and will recommend to OAT that they NOT suggest this company when you sign up for a trip. I wish I'd read about all the problems other people have had with Trip Mate Insurance but I dumbly thought OAT knew what they were doing.

You do not get terms & conditions of the policy or the company they use until after payment of insurance. When I put my claim in it took them 4 months not the 15 days they claim to tell me PREGNANCY IS A PRE EXISTING CONDITION based on when I purchased the insurance. I had no idea pregnancy would be treated as an illness. I was given the runaround from TRIP MATE from November 14, 2014 to March 10, 2015, to be denied. Unfortunately, I had complications that were pregnancy related. I did not know I had any issues until I got pregnant which was 2 months after I booked my trip.

I was not told any important information about the policy I was getting from my travel agent ** for TRAVELIVE who by the way knew I was pregnant as we would have small talk about it. All I was informed was I had to get the insurance 15 days before the trip, which I did. Unfortunately, I began having complications right before I was suppose to travel.

On top of being crushed I could not go on my trip, ended up in the hospital now this company have the nerve to say they are not paying my claim since I had a PRE EXISTING CONDITION. We planned a once in a lifetime trip with Viking from Paris to Prague. We bought fares for two nephews and their wives. They weren't able to afford the trip so we wanted to enjoy it with them. One nephew's wife's company changed owners and she was told that she had to be there at the time we were to travel (she had been promised that she could take off for the trip). We canceled their trip and Viking refunded the part that was in their contract according to the date we cancelled. Trip Mate finally after many weeks of emails and phone calls, sent the nephew and his wife travel vouchers for about a third of the cost of the trip. They would have to travel within a year and the vouchers were "non-refundable and non-transferable."

We called and told Trip Mate that we paid for the trip and we wanted the vouchers to be sent to us as the nephew and wife would have to spend much more to take a trip which they couldn't afford in the first place. They said they would only issue the vouchers to the insured people. In short, never buy insurance for someone else you are buying for as there is no scenario where you would ever get any refund from Trip Mate. It is a total scam as they take your money and you NEVER get anything back. We need information about lawsuits. Going to the State Insurance Commission with this.

After numerous rounds of paperwork, Trip Mate issued a message saying they will reimburse me for the $25 fee charged by domestic airlines to take a later flight due to weather delays from Ecuador to L.A. I am satisfied enough with the final reimbursement; the best feedback I can give is that insurance providers should not be allowed to put us through so many hoops to get reimbursement in such a minor amount.

I have had to copy and mail and to scan and to Email repeatedly numerous documents to obtain a total of $40, from a one-week premium of $104. What is our time worth? Apparently, to many insurance companies, nothing.

I purchased coverage for 10 days while I went to Galapagos. The flight back was delayed for several hours, due to weather we were informed. I missed ALL connections, and had to sleep overnight at the airport and check in for a flight at 4:30 a.m. My final leg was L.A. to Seattle/Bellingham. I missed this and had to pay for the reissue to the next flight out. After making me send a lot of paperwork in, Trip Mate denied the plane ticket fee of $25. They want YOUR money, but don't really want to pay the claims as they arise. My reimbursement was $15.01 for a few cups of coffee and some snacks in the 3 different airports.

On September 29, 2014 I was run down by a car that backed up into me in Savoca, Sicily and thrust me, face-forward, onto the pavement. My 2 left center teeth went through my bottom lip and were chipped and pushed inward. Other than that, my knee and right arm were badly bashed and bruised. The driver of the car that hit me took me and my tour director (and translator; no one spoke English) to the hospital in Taormina, but their x-ray machine was broken. So the driver, who could not have been more remorseful, drove us to the hospital in Messina. There we waited in the emergency room for more than 5 hours to be seen by a doctor. The very nice driver waited the entire time.

When I was finally seen, x-rayed and CT scanned, the doctor asked me (through my tour director) what hurt. I said, "My teeth! " He replied in astonishment, "What do you care? They're not yours. No one 79 year of age still has their own teeth." "Yes," I replied, "they are definitely mine, and I hope to keep them." At which, he spent the next 10 minutes oohing and aahing looking at my teeth. Apparently no one in Sicily has their own teeth past the age of 50.

Anyway, it took more than 3 weeks for my teeth to return to position, and I saw my own dentist the very next day I returned home. He patched the chipped teeth, for $405 and advised me that it would take time to learn whether the affected teeth would survive the accident. Well, one tooth died and I have had to have a root canal. Not fun and costly at $850. And Trip Mate has refused reimbursement, BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE TREATMENT IN SICILY! Which would not only have been premature, but would you go to a dentist in Sicily?

People write bad reviews because there are so many bad companies out there who will try to walk on its customers and clients and generally give cooperate America an Ugly name. I am sharing my experience with TripMate because they are one of the most garbage filled manipulating companies I have ever done business with. This past May I planned a vacation to the Bahamas with a lady friend. When I booked the trip, the agent offered to place insurance on the trip. My travel friend turned out to be bipolar and off meds. I decided that this trip was not in my best interest and notified my agent who in turn notified TripMate. It is my closest experience with a third world company since serving in the military.

Tripmate requested an avalanche of documents almost one at a time. TripMate strung this along for months. The most important document requested being proof of trip payment. When it was all said and done I supplied them with credit card statements and weeks later received a voucher for 1/2 the cost of the trip. The other half was issued to the non-paying bipolar psycho. WRONG. I did not insure the people, I insured the trip. TripMate is a bad choice to insure any trip. It is a third party insurance company that leeches off the backs of legitimate travel agents and travel companies. Their job is to string along clients and weasel out of paying as much as possible. There must be a better option than TripMate. We will certainly never use TripMate for any of my travel insurance needs. I truly regret ever having done business with this low class misleading company. They are at best a bad life experience and a hard lesson learned. STAY AWAY FROM TRIPMATE.

I paid for a trip to Italy in July 2014 through Globus who uses Tripmate for their insurer. I had had two knee surgeries and was concerned that my knee was not going to be healed by the trip which was to depart in September. I went in to the Globus office in Littleton, CO and talked with the travel agent in person. I mentioned my concern and she suggested that I purchase travel insurance so that I could get a refund if necessary. I ended up having to cancel because my knee was not healing. I had to have another surgery, this time on my foot because I was walking crooked and thus the reason for my knee not healing.

I had both my surgeon who performed both knee surgeries and the physician overseeing my physical therapy fill out the Attending Physicians Statement and was told that wasn't good enough and that my claim was being rejected and was given a travel voucher. Tomorrow, 11-13-14, I am having my surgeon who performed my foot surgery fill out the APS. I will be faxing this to Tripmate. They have sent me a travel voucher but I want my cash that I paid in good faith to this company. The travel voucher is only good at Globus or one of its affiliates. Makes me wonder if the two companies aren't in cahoots together. Hmmm, I say something smells. I am going to report this company to the Insurance Board in Missouri and I will be checking what other avenues I have to take if I do not get a cash refund.

I feel that three surgeries in less than one year is more than enough reason to obtain a full refund for having to cancel my trip. I feel very deceived by the travel agent that signed me up for this trip as well as Tripmate. Very deceptive practices and very poor customer service. I paid by check the full amount for the trip at the time I went into the office of Globus on July 25, 2014. Sylvia was my travel agent and I felt she should have been more informed and let me know that by purchasing trip insurance I would not necessarily receive my cash, but that was not the case. I was told to purchase the insurance in case my knee wasn't healed by trip time so that I could get a refund. I will let you know how this turns out. I noticed that this has a square asking whether I want an attorney to contact me about my complaint. Only if Tripmate has to pay!

I was fortunate enough, if you can say that, to receive my baggage 2 days later while my companion did not receive his until we returned home 7 days later. Of course during those days without luggage we purchased clothes (inexpensive). All of the documentation (i.e., receipts, credit card statements, airline claim paperwork) was submitted to Tripmate to substantiate our claim. After waiting for 30 days and not hearing from Tripmate I checked their website only to find my claim was still being processed.

Eventually I called Tripmate to find out what was holding up my claim. I was told that I needed additional documentation "proving when my luggage was received." I was told and I quote, "We are working on your behalf to get this information from the airline but your claim will not be processed until we get this information." At this point I am angry because we are going into the 8 weeks of processing time and I feel like I'm getting the runaround. If they would've stated that they needed this documentation, I would've made sure to get this information when my baggage arrived. Tripmate is unprofessional, unresponsive and fail to meet the minimum standard of adequate customer service.

After going back and forth with the supervisor, I requested to speak to her boss. I was told there was no one else and if I did find someone, they would state the same thing. That's why I got on the web to find out if there were other complaints regarding Tripmate and I see there are. I only wish I would have found out prior to purchasing the Tripmate insurance. If Tripmate thinks that I will be worn down and let this go they are sadly mistaken. I have no problem getting on a letter writing campaign and reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. Tripmate will not cover the costs because it will not provide translation. Medicare will not cover out of the USA. Secondary coverage will not accept claim because it is in Greek. This company fraudulently sold me a policy for a foreign country and does not accept the claim in that country's language. It is nothing but a rip off by insurance industry who make petty rules to avoid claims payment.

I always take trip insurance and have never put in a claim but I recently had to do so. I have been waiting almost a month to hear from them other than an acknowledgement that they have all the paperwork and while the customer service reps are nice enough, no money - what are they waiting for? Do they need something else? On their website it says the file went to the claims dept 6/26 - they also told me it was 10 business days. Now it is 16 days and no word from them. Guess 10 days is meaningless.

Purchased Travel Insurance for $274. Got to Mexico without our bags on Monday, the bags showed up Thursday. We spent $122 to get a few items to bridge the gap until we received our bags. After submitting originals of all paperwork received from airlines, completed Trip Mate claim forms, receipts for goods as well as receipt for Trip Mate policy and full itinerary our Claim was denied. Tripmate's response was that Aero Mexico (airline) would not respond to Tripmate's email verifying the delayed luggage. Multiple calls to Tripmate requesting a manager call me back were not followed up with until my third request. After the frustration and treatment I received from Tripmate I would strongly urge everyone to avoid them at all costs. They are only good if you do not have a claim, but then why do you need them?

My client and I have resolved this problem with Tripmate.

    Original Review: May 13, 2014

I'm a travel agent that was fortunate to book a $21,000 trip for my client family of four from Boston to Beaches Turks & Caicos. Unfortunately, the day prior to their scheduled departure, U.S. Airways notified them that their flight was cancelled due to weather. Every U.S. Airways flight through Charlotte N.C. was cancelled over a two or three day period as the most severe snowstorm/blizzard in 10 years swept from Georgia to Maine. U.S. Air answered phones with a message of (paraphrasing) "we're really busy due to the severe weather, please call back", HANGUP!!

My client was fortunate to find alternate air from Boston to Toronto, and then direct to Turks and Caicos, totally avoiding the U.S. east coast. He did this knowing he had trip interruption insurance through TripMate, purchased via the Sandals website, and that Tripmate agents had verified by phone to me that "this should be covered". A day after they left, the Boston airport was also closed. Tripmate has denied his trip interruption coverage because he purchased the alternate tickets as soon as U.S. Airways notified him of the cancellation, claiming that he bought them the day before his trip started, and the day following his replacement purchase is when his insurance coverage began.

Sandals (Beaches) did get U.S. Airways to issue a refund for the Boston to Turks & Caicos portion, but that was only $1036.80, and my client spent $3461.76 to get replacement air to get them uninterrupted to their VERY expensive vacation. Sandals (Beaches) has since failed to answer any inquiries/complaints regarding the additional $2424.96. My client is out. We are pursuing a complaint to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance regarding Tripmate, but I'm afraid that will only be added to the horrible customer service that TripMate customarily provides.

I read a bunch of negative reviews here and on other sites (after we filed our claim) so I was expecting the worst. In fact, everything went very smoothly. I don't know if this is because we bought it through GCTravel, which sends thousands of dollars business to them, or not. The bottom line is: My wife and I had to cancel our trip because of an immediate family member (not one going on the trip) being admitted to the hospital 3 days before we were scheduled to leave on our trip to Europe.

I called GCT and they gave me a claim number. They said it would take about 30 days to receive my money back. I called TripMate and gave them the claim number and plan number. They faxed me the claim form which I filled out, had the Dr. sign, and faxed back the same day. TripMate never called me for extra paperwork. They never called the doctor or hospital (to my knowledge) for verification. One nice thing is you never have to speak to anyone; you can check the claim process on line with your claim number. I watched the process go through, online, and we got 100% of our money back today, 28 days after I filed. The check arrived in time to pay the credit card charge for our re-booked trip that leaves 3 weeks from now so I'm a happy camper!

I do have to say that there are many different plans that Trip Mate offers on their website and the ones that don't cover as much are less expensive. So read the fine print, before you sign up. We bought the only plan that GCT Travel offers which is probably the most expensive plan you can purchase at Trip Mate and covers the most contingencies, so keep this in mind.

    Original Review: April 28, 2014

We were on a family trip in the mountains of Sedona, Arizona last June. Subsequent to the stay in Sedona, we were to continue our travel to Baltimore to see our grandson play baseball in his team league. My husband took ill in Arizona on a weekend, and both my son and daughter-in-law, physicians and full professors at prestigious medical schools, who were with us on the trip recommended that we return home to be seen by my husband's primary care physician. I called Tripmate Insurance, explained the situation, and was told I could submit the claim for our trip interruption after seeing the primary care physician. I then called the airline to cancel the rest of our trip and make new reservations for the return home, canceled our hotels in the East Coast, and canceled the car rental there.

I filled out all the appropriate Insurance forms, and our primary care physician was able to give us an "emergency" appointment the following Tuesday (normally it can take weeks to get an appointment). She examined my husband and agreed that he could not continue to fly across country at this time. She completed and signed the Tripmate treating physician's form. My son, the physician, included a letter describing the medical situation and the need for my husband to return home to see his own physician as soon as possible. Since the incident occurred on a weekend, the hotel could only provide someone who was on call and we were not sure when they would be able to contact someone to come to the hotel. We had to make the decision to return home as soon as possible and make all the arrangements necessary for this change.

I submitted all the documents within the week after our return home as advised by the Tripmate agent. After many weeks, the claim came back denied... their reason was that they would not accept the advice of our son, as the policy does not consider or allow family members to be the doctor of record. However, we only included my son's description to give Tripmate an accurate, on-site account of the incident... he was NOT the treating physician. After many letters and calls to clarify the situation, our primary physician was asked to provide more information. She wrote two more letters explaining the situation and her advice to cancel the remainder of the planned trip so as to stabilize my husband's condition. There were considerable back and forth calls and e-mails and many weeks of delayed response from Tripmate.

They finally agreed to pay the change fees and airline penalties for my husband and myself, but gave us a very hard time regarding paying for the cost of the transport service from the airport to our home. Since my daughter and son-in-law and granddaughter were also in the van, which we paid for, but were not insured by Tripmate, they prorated the total cost of the van and gave us a small portion of the total van cost (divided by 5 people). It took months to receive this minuscule amount of our total trip costs to cancel the remainder of the trip. Working with Tripmate was a very frustrating, time-consuming and stressful experience, especially at a time of family concern and anxiety over my husband's condition. I certainly cannot recommend that anyone use this company for travel insurance!

Our son traveled to South Korea and was taken to the hospital on an emergency. He was having seizures. Tripmate's immediate medical facilitator is OnCall. OnCall's primary interest at the outset was to find out who was the primary insurer, Tripmate's wish hopefully not Tripmate, and to find out if they could deny responsibility for the medical emergency hoping it was a pre-existing condition that wasn't covered under the insurance.

After it was determined that neither of the above were the case and that Tripmate needed to take responsibility for the case, several problems began. Most of them had to do with billing and communication with our son's doctors in Korea.

When our son recovered after 3 days of hospitalization and even before, the Korean Hospital started demanding payment. Several of the hospital's financial representatives began camping out in my son's ICU room demanding arrangements be made for payment. It took 2 days for Tripmate to arrange for payment and more than $1300 in calls. Those calls were directly related to their paying the hospital bill and our communicating with our son's doctor about his condition and fitness for travel. Tripmate said that it would not reimburse those expenses as part of our son's $250,000 medical coverage and $500,000 medical evacuation coverage.

Our son was discharged to return home to the US. Per doctor orders a nurse was to accompany him home on the airplane. Tripmate provided no transportation to our son's hotel while waiting for arrangements to be made or transportation to the airport for the flight home. Further, our son went home by himself because his many medications were dwindling and Tripmate was taking its time to arrange for a medical transport. My son was worried how he would get his medications refilled so that he would not suffer from the lack of his necessary medications. The medications he is taking involve doctors in many medical specialties. Getting his medications refilled would have been a real challenge in Busan, South Korea.

So don't get sick when you travel. If you unfortunately do, DON'T USE TRIPMATE INSURANCE BECAUSE YOU WILL FEEL STRESSED AND UPSET WORKING WITH THEM. Their claims department is very difficult. The $6,000 hospital bill was paid. We had to stay up all night for several nights to communicate with various hospital personnel and OnCall people in the US to make this happen. DEALING WITH TRIPMATE AND ITS INSURER MH ROSS CAN MAKE YOU SICK!!!!

My wife and I flew from L.A. to Frankfort Germany via Lufthansa for a connecting flight to Prague. We had 1 hour and 15 minutes to make our connection. With no hesitation or stopping for any reason we began to make our way to the next gate. There were extremely long lines thru the passport check and again thru security which we did not expect to have to go thru again. In my carry-on bag I had a large handheld back massager, which cleared security in LA. However, we were taken to another location for further checking of the massager. Several times I expressed my concern to the agents about missing our connection, to no avail.

After finally being cleared and leaving my wife behind, I literally ran to the gate, an extreme distance from security, hoping to hold it open until she got there. Upon finally reaching it, the plane was still at the gate with the passageway still attached but the Lufthansa agent refused to allow me to board. Unconcerned, he directed me to Lufthansa customer service for replacement tickets. At Lufthansa I was refused replacement tickets because I had purchased "special tickets" thru a travel agency which also went thru United Airlines. Lufthansa sent me to United agents to plead my case. They too were cold and actually rude.

With no alternative, I had to purchase new tickets to Prague costing over $800.00. Though given the events as I described were totally out of my control, I was denied a claim for Missed Connection Coverage by Trip Mate because it did not fall under their limited provisions of natural disaster, terrorism, weather conditions, or strike. Their response to my initial filing of the claim was not timely, and I had to make several calls to track the progress of the claim, being unable to track online as they indicated. I believe they should be investigated.

Tripmate Claim Paid, but the fine details are tricky - My husband and went to the Caribbean through Sandals resort and for some reason they use Tripmate. However, Tripmate is now US Fire. Things have changed quite a bit with Tripmate and depending on when you went, your claim number etc, will depend on the company whom your claim is submitted to. As I mentioned, it is the fine details that you have to submit in order for your claim to be paid.

As you said, I myself became ill on the last 2 days of our trip and needed to seek emergency treatment. Being a nurse, I kept records and because I had already read and researched Tripmate consumer reviews and complaints. For patients with pre-existing conditions, this is tough call as they will always try to say it was related to your prior health. There are way to get around this depending on the situation. However, sometimes it is related to pre-existing but sometimes accidents happen. Reading the policy word for word is the key. They make the policy so confusing and contradicting you sometimes do not really understand it.

We love Sandals, but they will tell you "no worries" you are covered. This is not the case. The first thing you should do is keep your Sandals invoice or the invoice where you purchased the vacation. If you were making multiple payments, keep every single one. You also want to keep the invoice that shows the payment for the insurance paid in full for all those traveling. You then want to retain a copy of the credit card statement showing where the payment was made and the dates that would match. So there is no question that the insurance was paid in full. When an accident or a sickness occurs, you are to first let the resort manager know asap. This puts them on notice and also it makes them responsible for giving a statement later on your behalf for your claim.

Before I left the resort, I had the resort type up a short letter explaining the situation so that I could attach this to my claim. I did attempt to call Tripmate with no success. I then proceeded to see the resort nurse, which she felt that I needed to see a doctor asap. They had a doctor on call and he came to the resort. I did have to pay upfront for all the fees and medications. But before the doctor left I made sure that billing was well documented and that he put it was not an illness, that it was an accident. Once you the leave the country there is no way to obtain his signature or anything else. The insurance knows this... They will hold this against you. On the bills, you will need diagnosis codes and CPT codes and well as the amounts charged for each and every service he or she provided. Example: emergency exam $200.00, medications - name of medication $88.00.

Please make sure the doctor includes limit of activity from that point on. I could not get into the sun which was awful because I had to stay in my room while my husband and friends that we were with went snorkeling and so forth. But I made the best of it and went to the spa. When I returned home, I had to see my specialist here because of the severity of my injury. I did not file my claim right away. But I called them and spoke to them, received a case and file number and she emailed me a claim for packet. It also had a list of items that was to be included when I sent the claim back. I followed that listing with a fine tooth comb...

When my claim was ready to send in, I made sure that I had everything listed on their requirement list. I also faxed my claim with a cover that indicated that all the items that they required were attached and what page. I gave them a 30 day grace period to process claim and a 15 day grace period to advise me if there was additional documents needed. They had a claims status online check system and I checked this weekly. My claim went through like a breeze and I was reimbursed for the entire amount.

I believe documentation was the key to my claim being paid. I do not believe in luck. I will be happy to assist anyone who is experiencing problems with their claim. You may contact directly through my email **. I know it is very frustrating. Please take pictures of all your items once you arrive at your resort especially with a camera that shows a date. Things do happen and they disappear. Wishing happy travels.

    Christy,

Thank you for the question. According to our information, you received medical treatment after you flew back to the United States, and the policy states that medical expenses incurred after the trip are not covered. The medical coverage afforded under the travel policy provides coverage for covered medical expenses incurred during your trip, including coverage for items not always covered by a typical medical plan, so such things as special transportation arrangements home needed due to sickness or injury that occurred on the trip or out-of-network covered medical expenses incurred during the trip are eligible for benefits.

    Kathy,

We sorry to hear about the cancellation of your trip and your dissatisfaction with the claims process. Please note that the policy covers trip cancellation in case a sickness that prevents travel occurs after the insurance is purchased. In your case, however, your sickness did not develop after you purchased the insurance, but you determined that the predicted weather would make travel with your condition difficult. There is no provision in the policy to cover trip cancellation because of a weather forecast. While your claim was not covered on the basis of your condition, benefits were paid to you under the Cancel For Any Reason provisions.

After reading complaints from other policy holders, this is their way of doing business. Stay away from this company. Our room was flooded. The entire place was shut down. The airport was closed for days. Naturally we were trapped until our departure. There was running water and some food, but we were stranded for days until our departure.

Tripmate refused to pay us any benefit since they claim that we were unsatisfied with the amenities we received and stayed for the duration of our trip. What exactly was I supposed to do? Swim back to Florida? They claim that I did no incur any additional expenses to leave. How was I supposed to leave when the airport was closed? They claim that there is no benefit for amenities that were unavailable. I think that a hurricane ravaged island flooded by waters and airport closure qualifies as "trip interruption. " I filed a complaint with the BBB and all they did was forward my emails to TripMate. I got nowhere. Even when the policy states that there is coverage for "trip interruption" because of "flood" or "inclement weather, " they will not pay unless you find a way to incur additional expenses to escape your demise and then have to file a claim after the fact for the unused portion of your trip. Good luck trying to file any claim with them. They will find any excuse to misrepresent the facts and twist the language of the policy to deny the claim. I have yet to read any online posts praising them for paying a claim.

Trip Mate refused to reimburse for lost items out of luggage on trip to Peru. The trip was cut short by riots at Lake Titicaca and a bomb in the Cusco airport. Trip Mate's reasoning was losses were not reported to authorities. Well, we did not sleep for two days. And the authorities were busy with riots and bombs. We did not have the time to inventory possessions, until we were safely back in Lima. I did tell the hotel in Lima, but they did not give me any documentation. Trip Mate took three months to decide that they would not pay up.

This unreliable and unethical company stalled for three months and finally refused to pay claim for a cruise I had to cancel prior to the sailing date because my husband died unexpectedly in May. Instead of honoring my June 2010 claim they waited until mid September when the cruise company went out of business and then said I had to try to recover my loss from the entities handling the Cruise West bankruptcy as if my trip had been cancelled by the Cruise West rather than me. Cruise West paid their share of my claim promptly in June and said TripMate would pay the remainder. No one from TripMate ever questioned my claim or contacted me after I filed the claim until Oct 2010 when they sent two checks for $60.....they owe me $13k.

In March 2010, my wife and I traveled on their grand circle tour to Chile and Argentina led by your excellent trip director, Nick ** On an air descent into Argentina, my ear began to bleed. Nick wanted me to see a specialist and sent me in the hotel car to the british hospital. He filled out the insurance forms and said there would be no trouble with reimbursement.

After months of correspondence and waiting we finally received $52.00 -- nothing for our travel expenses to and from the hotel or compensation for the two planned trip events that my wife and I missed. For this reason, I have decided that we will no longer travel with grand circle travel or oat. We have asked on at least three occasions to be removed from their mailing list but continued to receive anywhere from two to seven piece of mail from their company each day. Please remove us from your mailing list for all documents immediately.

I bought this travel insurance policy and when I needed to file a claim, they took more than 3 months to process a claim. They were rude and harassing me and my family, trying to make me tired. So I gave up on the claim. Until today, they haven't finished my claim and every time they ask for a document, I send it to them. Then they ask for more documents. Please help!
