Booked a trip with Viking Ocean and had to cancel Jan 26th due to surgery for a trip in April. We cancelled many months prior to trip and received a prompt refund from Viking but have been getting the run around from Trip Mate even though they admit they have all of the information to give us a refund. I had a conference call with Viking and Trip Mate 2 weeks ago at which time they said they would send the money within 5 days. They continually say they will send the refund but have no explanation as to why it is being delayed.

This is a scam to keep your money as long as possible. Tripmate was recommended by CheapOair... It figures. HORRENDOUS.

When travelling, I have always purchased trip insurance never expecting to use it. The trip I planned for our birthday in February this year had to be cancelled due to a health emergency. On January 17, 2018, I turned to my insurance provider, Trip Mate, to file a claim to be reimbursed for my travel expenses as soon as I cancelled my trip. I was immediately sent the claim information and all the necessary forms to complete for the claim. I returned all of the necessary forms via download on February 15. I was immediately sent an acknowledgement letter on February 15. I checked the claim status numerous times with no update shown.
On April 5, I called to check the status. I was told that they could not estimate how much longer it would take to process the claim and receive my refund. I was also told that they had all of the information needed to process my claim. It has been almost two weeks since that time. Trip Mate is either extremely inefficient or purposely delaying refunding the amount in hopes that I will forget about my claim. I assure them that I will not forget. They are holding on to my hard earned money. I will also do all I can to inform other potential customers of their deceitful practices. I have notified my travel agent who will no longer use Trip Mate for their clients. Additionally, my attorney is my next call.

I purchased trip insurance for a River Cruise. My partner passed away unexpectedly before we could travel. The insurance was promoted as "covers everything" resulting in trip delay or cancellation. It's been 2 months since I filed my claims. The service is horrible. It took over a week for them to acknowledge they received my paperwork (which was emailed). Every time you call you get the same line "It is taking longer than usual for claims processing. We apologize for the delay." If you hang on line long enough you might get a real person, but most of the time you are put into a call back queue. When you do get to talk to someone, they only say, "It's all pending and we are reviewing." I had 2 claims, one for the trip cancellation of my partner and 1 for the increase in my fare (single supplement) to continue the trip.
Both filed the same time and under the same claim number. The fare was close to $4000 each and all they want to pay is $584. When asked for an explanation of the huge difference in ticket cost and benefits, they repeatedly say, "That is maximum allowed under the plan you purchased." I read every line of all 14 pages and nowhere does it have amounts or calculations for "maximum allowed". Most references are trip cost. They have only processed one part of the claim after all this time. The single supplement portion is - you guessed it "being reviewed and pending". The only time they update the status log on the claim tracking is after one of my many phone calls and not even all of them.
They also made the payee of the benefit the deceased. I was the one who paid for the insurance. Any and all refunds should go to the purchaser. Trying to get that changed, I was told it would take a couple of weeks to stop payment and change payee. They hadn't mailed the check out yet. Still had it on premise but it was going to take weeks to fix. Then they tell me if I want to dispute the benefit payment, I will need to receive the check, cash it and then re-file all the paperwork and it will take a minimum of 30 more days to get the case re-reviewed. They are hoping most people will just give up. I filed a complaint with the BBB in their home state and it seems like there are over 400 complaints against them. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM.

I should explain that I had surgery on my foot last August. My trip was for early March. I book the flight in November, as I thought my foot would be better by March, it wasn't. What makes me really angry is that I called Trip Mate before I cancelled my flight (to make sure the issue was covered), they said it was!!! If they had been upfront with me and said it wasn't, I would have gone ahead and gone on the trip. I would have stayed in the hotel room 80% of the time, with only leaving to get food (Hotel did not provide room service). But I am not in a position to toss money to into the wind. This is a horrible company to do business with. Please save yourself the grief. Listen to me, I'm trying to help you. I will keep yacking about this company until I am satisfied I have exposed them for their lies, all $162.00 worth!

I purchased travel insurance with Trip Mate/World Nomads underwritten by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. On December 27, 2017 for a volunteer trip to Ghana which I had planned for January 27, 2018 until Apri 22, 2018. Two days before I was due to leave I started having chest discomfort. I went to my doctor and he said he wanted to run further test to see what was happening with my heart. I called Trip Mate before I cancelled my trip and told them what my doctor had said. They never informed me that if I cancel my trip because I had not commenced my trip that I would not be able to fill a claim. What was I suppose to do? Go on my trip sick not knowing the extent of my illness?
This entire company is a scam, trip interruption should be just that not just a design to get people to believe that if they had to cancel their trip they can at least recover some of the expenses paid. Their other escape clause is their pre-existing statement which states that if the illness which caused the trip interruption happens 90 before the coverage starts the protection would not be in effect. What a bunch of hogwash. Again the entire company is a scam set up to take people's money by giving the false impression that they have some type of coverage if unexpected incidences occurred.

My wife and I planned what we thought would be a great winter getaway to Jamaica. After looking so forward to this trip for weeks, my father had a heart attack and passed. This was hard enough to swallow but priority is family. So lucky I bought insurance, Right? So wrong. I immediately contacted my travel agent. She submitted the paperwork and also sent the death certificate 10 days later. My father passed on Jan 3, 2018. It is now March 28. We are close to 3 month and I have not received a thing. My travel agent has contacted them weekly and gets the same answer: "We will process this claim next week" or "We are going to make this one priority." Three month and the same runaround. Beware, Beware, Beware!!! I feel now I have to go to the next step legally. Should we have to do this?

After some reviews which I wish I had done before I purchased my trip insurance, I totally agree with the review that states "Trip Mate is the absolutely worst company ever in the history of the world." I had left on a business trip to India, but was delayed a day in Boston. During the night my wife calls me to let me know that mom went into the hospital and didn't have long to live. I cancelled my flight and returned home and she did pass the next day.
The Airline refunded the cost of my unused trip, but would not refund the cost of the trip from Cleveland to Boston. I submitted the paperwork for the difference including the death certificate, attending physician's statement, the amount refunded, and all the receipts. I was only asking for 10% of the total cost. They denied my claim. NO AIRLINE, PERSON, or OTHER BUSINESS should ever partner with this firm ever again. From reading some the reviews here and my own personal experience, this company is a scam artist and should be prosecuted by the FTC.

I got my MONEY 9 months after I submitted my claim... After calling, calling, calling, month after month. I finally called the underwriter, who called TripMate... And PRESTO! I got through to the claims examiner. Who said, and you will laugh, that the check was in the mail. My advice. #1. Fill out their form perfectly. #2.Get substantiated documents from your MD or hospital and enclose with your claim form. #3. Remember, it is their interest to not pay. Don’t give up and good luck.

My husband went to his aunt's funeral in Ohio, but on the way back American Airlines delayed the flight for hours because the crew hadn't had sufficient rest and legally couldn't fly for about 5 hours. Of course he missed his connecting flight, but they put him on another plane that should have made it in time for the last leg of the trip on a small commuter plane. That other flight they put him on was delayed for another 3 hours sitting on the tarmac at O'Hare. Of course he missed the final flight and had to purchase a new ticket in order to get home. After waiting for 6 months, we have a letter from TripMate saying that the airline was not completely shut down for 12 hours or more. What?!? We called, they said the claim is closed. If we want to appeal we have to resubmit everything along with a written formal request to re-open it. They should be shut down.

Trip Mate denied my claim when I cancelled my trip. They sent a letter stating that I didn't meet the requirements of their reimbursement. I had submitted a form signed by my doctor. He stated that it was difficult for me to be able to walk for 30 minutes which is a requirement given me at the time of the booking. I explained all of this to a Trip Mate agent when I called to cancel my trip. The representative stated that I had a "pre-existing" condition.
On my Medical Form, the doctor stated that I had previous back surgery. I advised her that my back surgery was nearly 60 years ago and certainly that could hardly constitute a "pre-existing" condition. I explained to her that the numbness in my legs occurred just recently, and that the Tour Company had advised me that there was a lot of walking, and getting on and off smaller vessels - and that balance is very important. The Trip Mate agent apologized, but said there was nothing she could do about it - but I could file a complaint with the 'Appeals Unit' which I did. I have heard nothing as yet. Incidentally, I cancelled my trip in November of 2017. I received the letter of denial in March of 2018.

I purchased a trip in Expedia in September of 2017, and purchased a trip to South Africa departing in January, 2018. In December, I visited a cardiologist who advised me not to travel further and get an angioplasty that revealed blockages and the need for surgery. I canceled my trip with Expedia who immediately canceled and refunded my hotel and land portions once they received the physician’s statement that I should not travel. The airfare portion was covered by TripMate.com. I filed the required paperwork and days then weeks passed. I was not about to wait for months to pass as others did on here.
Nevertheless, I finally contacted their offices and was told that the delay in resolving my claim was due to “the many other disasters” they were handling. I replied that that was unfortunate, but other insurance companies are also handling claims from disasters and that is part of their business... not a reason for an excuse to make customers wait endless amounts of time. Complained with my state’s insurance commissioner. My telephone calls are indicated, with not much happening afterward. However, right I asked for a supervisor I was told there was no one else I could speak with and that claims adjusters “do not speak with passengers.” I hung up and filed an ONLINE COMPLAINT with my state’s insurance commissioner. After TripMate.com was contacted by my state’s official agency, my claim suddenly went right into processing and I’m now awaiting for my claim to be paid.
When I called after the insurance complaint was filed and received by TripMate, I was told that they would only speak with the state’s insurance commission as they had escalated my claim to their legal department. I contacted my state’s insurance commission immediately afterward and was told that this was a nonsensical answer. Shortly thereafter, my claim was moved to closure. I’m awaiting my claim check. I’m not sure how much longer it will take, but I imagine anytime now. Besides, I’m farther along than most people on here. If I do not receive my full claim, I’ll file yet another update on here, and with the Consumer Affairs Protection Unit of my state with the Attorney General’s Office. Don’t give up! File a complaint with your state’s Department of Insurance Commission! You’ll see your case “suddenly” move along. If they deny you, go to your state’s Attorney General’s Office!

There is probably a reason they do not participate in ConsumerAffairs certification. We just canceled a trip with Viking Cruises and they unfortunately use TripMate. The process, in our case, due to medical illness that is ongoing, is a 7 plus page process and requires HIPAA information which I do not see that they are certified to handle but if you do not submit an attending physician's statement, they will not process the claim. I have all the hospital admitting and discharge information to prove the claim but not good enough. Sort of stupid on their part, why plan a trip, pay for it, then cancel. I am not making any money on this, in fact, losing money. In the future, I will use my credit card's travel insurance.

I filed the claim that very day, December 26th, and all paperwork was into Trip Mate by January 2, 2018.
I was originally told it would be 30 days from the date that the final paperwork was received, which should put it at the beginning of February. Today is March 6th, and the claim still hasn't been paid. I am so frustrated. I have called repeatedly once a week to inquire and check it online every single day. Each person says that is should be 'any day now.' Starting next week, I plan to call them each and every day. In the future, I plan to insure with anyone but Trip Mate. They are the absolute worst. We purchased insurance because we had booked a cruise and then, a week later, discovered that my husband had a small tumor that would require surgery. We purchased insurance in January and our trip was in July so we had lots of time for his recovery but, surgery always has risks. We paid for the full trip 3 days after we purchased our insurance--proof of our optimistic outlook. My husband did not recover as quickly as expected. Moreover, after the surgery his doctors told him he would need 5 months of post-surgical chemo and radiation therapy. This was totally unexpected. So we cancelled the trip in May.
Trip Mate accused us of knowing when we purchased the insurance that we would cancel and refused our application for reimbursement. We appealed on the ground that our January assessment of the situation, when we purchased the insurance, was that we would be able to take the trip and the proof was in the facts that (a) we paid the full trip cost very soon after buying the insurance and (b) we could have walked away from the trip in January with only a $200 penalty whereas, instead, we paid over $1400 for insurance. What fool would pay all that money instead of a $200 penalty if they expected to cancel? We were given vouchers for (half) of another trip. We appealed again and finally, after 7 months they sent us a check for the cancellation fee of 50% of the trip. They are either illogical or dishonest. Buy insurance from another company.

We submitted our $180 claim for the hotel and it was denied under Trip Mate's "Delay" provision. They said because we were not delayed longer than 12 hours they were denying our claim. I called them to ask they reconsider and I got the big blow off. I will now appeal and will also be contacting the Missouri Insurance Commissioner and reporting them. All of this was due to a hurricane, a natural disaster. I told the Trip Mate rep I talked to that I know they do everything and anything they can to deny claims so they don't have to pay and I'm sure they got hit hard by all the claims filed due to the hurricane season. When I had a fall and clinic visit in September on a trip, the claim was then handled by TRIP MATE. Numerous calls, numerous conversations with TRIP MATE! If they use the word "expedite" meaning they move it forward, be wary. I am only requesting that my medical bill be paid. This should be simple!! They have every bit of info that could be needed. Waiting for a supervisor call once again...I think many of us are seeing an unhopeful pattern.

Check received yesterday for the entire airline ticket. Considered paid and closed ;-)

We planned a cruise last July 2017, but we had to cancel due to an illness in our family. I did everything according to the book, and like everybody else, I was "cooking" for a while. We provided all the evidence multiple times from doctors, flight tickets, and nothing substantial happened until I contact Kansas Insurance Department via email KID.Webcomplaints@ks.gov and they asked for my info, and the next couple of days I got my process expedited. Don't waste your time with them if you don't see progress.

My experience with this insurance was extremely disappointing. I insured a non refundable airline ticket which I needed to cancel due to Resort closure as a result of hurricane damage. When I purchased the insurance I was under the impression that I could recover the ticket price for a covered condition. Not so. I have to take the airline credit to be used within one year. All they paid was cancellation and reissue fee and it took a long time to get that. Subsequent calls and complaints were unsuccessful. I gained nothing by insuring this trip. The cancellation fees would have been covered by the Resort anyway.
I am not planning another trip soon so I stand to lose this airline credit. In my opinion this is fraudulent. I could have obtained that airline credit without paying insurance. The lesson learned: do not buy travel insurance from Trip Mate for airline tickets, instead spend the extra money to purchase a refundable ticket. At the very least know exactly what is covered and get it in writing. As far as I am concerned Trip Mate is a fraudulent and dishonest company.

I have called over and over and get put on hold, cut off, and just exhausted trying to resolve this issue. I called Viking who recommended this company and am going to report them also to the Federal Trade Commission. Looking at reviews on-line, this is what others have also experienced. Again, do not use this company.

However nothing was updated on my account. I followed up right before Christmas and was told nothing has been done on our account since the claim was filed. I explained how 3 people told me 3 separate times I had a check coming in the mail. Ironically when I called and complained in January they denied our claim with no reason whatsoever. This place is a complete fraud and are just taking our money.

My wife and I purchased a travel package from Viking Cruises which consisted of air to and from Cleveland, OH, 8 day river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, 2 day pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam and travel interruption insurance (Trip Mate). The trip was scheduled to depart on the 24th of July, 2017 and arrive in Amsterdam on the 25th. Due to delayed flights and mechanical problems, Air Canada was not able to get us to Amsterdam until the morning of the 27th. I contacted Viking and Trip Mate during the trip interruption and filed a travel claim when we returned.
During the ensuing 5 months I have filed, refiled forms, made a number of calls to their call center and finally on December 29th was informed that a payment in the amount we had claimed would be sent in the next 5-10 days. We are still waiting. I would not like to leave Viking Cruises out of my complaint as I feel that since everything was purchased through them, they should have more of a fiduciary responsibility in seeking a resolution earlier. That did not happen.

The reason for my review is to say ask questions. Something you would assume would be covered may not be. I booked a tour with a group of individuals through Collette Travel. They offered us travel insurance through Trip Mate, Inc. The trip was a Catholic Pilgrimage to places in France and Portugal but also going into Spain. Due to having knee replacement surgery last year my physician advised that if possible purchase an airline ticket with more leg room. On United Airlines this is called Economy Plus. Ironically my knee problem started on another very long flight. As you know it can be difficult getting up and moving around. That extra bit of leg room does help to take the pressure off legs and especially knees.
The trip was during the political issues that were going on in Barcelona, Spain. Because of this Collette Travel changed our plans thus we flew from Madrid, Spain instead. I did notify the tour guide (employed by Collette) that I had purchased more leg room for myself and my niece and also provided him with copies of the information. He assured me everything was taken care of. It wasn't. Turns out our flight was never canceled with United Airlines. Had it been canceled United would have refunded me the money for the upgrade. I am certain it wasn't canceled as I was receiving messages from United to check in for flight. I was told not to worry that Collette had taken care of it (they didn't).
Arrive home and speak with United, Collette and finally Trip Mate, Inc. I basically was informed to file claim with Trip Mate since they are the travel insurance company. I filed claim finally on November 16, 2017. When I did not hear from them by December 13 I initiated a call to them (they documented they called me). I was informed it usually takes 30 days to resolve a claim. I foolishly thought they meant issue a refund. On December 29, 2017 still no communication from Trip Mate. I am told they will put a rush on it. Not sure what this means as on January 2, 2018 I receive a call saying I requested a callback. NO I DID NOT. I requested my claim get some attention.
The anticipated amount of the refund would be approximately $471.00. I am a senior, widow and believe me that is a lot of money. Finally I send email to executives at Trip Mate. Told they will expedite. It did not take them long to say it was not covered. If I read the legalize booklet I would have realized that. What good is travel insurance if it doesn't cover something that you have no control over and are losing money because of? If possible do not use Trip Mate. Lesson learned was I should not have believed that Collette would do what they said either and call insurance company and ask questions.

I booked a trip through Delta Vacations in May of 2017. My husband was diagnosed with cancer and was advised not to travel. When we made our purchase we were offered 2 separate insurance plans. Plan 1 offered a travel voucher for $99 Plan 2 was for a no questions asked refund for $129. Since it was an expensive trip to Italy we purchased the $129.00 per person plan.
It is now January of 2018 and I am still trying to get a refund. We submitted all of the forms and documents that they requested and also a letter from my husband's doctor (even though we shouldn't need it!) and now they are trying to offer us a $1200 VOUCHER for a $5800 trip!!! I truly am sorry for those people who were involved in those natural disasters but My Claim and Tripmates written policy is what is important to me. I asked for a claim as the resort we booked for 7 nights had 1. No running water throughout entire resort. 2. No hot water the first night. 3. Leaking water on the room’s floor from shower & toilets. 4. No flushing toilets. There were other issues but this WAS INHABITABLE and we had to leave and stay elsewhere. I don’t understand how Tripmate could deny this claim. So very disappointed and want to take this further but unsure how.

Claim papers were immediately filed with Trip Mate, and was acknowledged having been received. At the time the Atlantis was offering a free rebooking program for uninsured guests, and the airlines were issuing a 100% value credit to be used within a year. Finally, after many phone calls to Trip Mate, and countless on-line status checks, I received a letter December 11th stating that my claim would not be recognized as the hurricane did not hit the resort, and it remained open for business.
This is really unacceptable and a terrible business strategy under the circumstances. I planned a trip to climb Mt Rainer last spring. Weeks prior I injured my neck and back from training with a heavy pack. I purchased insurance on August 22 and canceled on September 11. Here is their response. “In order to issue benefits under the plan on the basis of an injury, we must document the injury occurred while your coverage was in effect (I.e. August 23, 2017) and resulting in medical restrictions preventing travel beginning August 20, 2017 (I.e. before the effective date of your coverage). The attending physician’s statement you submitted also indicates you were only seen on September 15, 2017 (I.e. days after your trip was canceled and when your coverage was no longer in effect). Because we do not have documentation substantiating you were examined and treated by a physician at the time you canceled your trip, for an injury that occurred while your coverage was in effect, Trip cancelation are not payable under the plan terms”.
Besides having to re submit the paperwork and waiting till now to receive this letter it is my belief this company is not only acting fraudulently but also lacks good customer service. Does anyone have advice on how to proceed in order to have Trip Mate pay? Based on the many other reviews, I am not the only one with difficulty with this company. After 10 years of using this company to insure my overseas travel (of which there has been plenty), I filed my first claim. Rejected on a technicality. My first mammogram ever came back with a lump. My dr was able to schedule me in for a biopsy the day before my trip. During my trip the biopsy site became Inflamed. In addition my cat was diagnosed with a terminal illness and I needed to rush home to say goodbye. Because I got the biopsy the day before my coverage started and cats aren’t people, none of my emergency expenses were covered. Zero. While I’m not an idiot and understand a cat isn’t a human, the mental stress of a dying cat and impending cancer results as well as the biopsy site infection sent me home. This is considered a preexisting condition.
A mammogram is a standard medical test required for all women over 40. The fact that the surprise last minute biopsy happened less than 24 hours before I left for my trip was a gift from my dr who squeezed me in but sadly the irritation and stress isn’t covered. I can honestly say I never thought such terrible circumstances wouldn't be covered. This company took months of back and forth and sent me the same letters over and over listing technicalities and justifications before finally rejecting my claim. They managed to make the worst week of my life even worse.
I will never use them again and I recommend no one else does either. Basic women’s health and extenuating family circumstances, even when they are a dying pet you’ve had for 15 years and not a human, are valid reasons to spend thousands of dollars to cancel a trip and miss my best friend’s wedding. If your company’s policies don't recognize that then you have lost all my business and the business of anyone I can influence. Shame on you.

I have filed a claim with BBB and the State AGs office as their deceptive and fraudulent business practices must be addressed by our legal system because they have been getting away with this for over twenty eight years. Wow. These guys really blow. My claim was a clear-cut, SINGLE-line item and they still took 6 months to process it. Their status updates on their website are useless, broken, and completely uninformative (See attached). I'd see no updates and call every month and they'd say, "We're working on it..." and give some excuse. The latest being the hurricanes. Which is lame, because my claim was submitted in May. I finally got my settlement in October. You shouldn't even start with them.

Filed claim in August and it is Oct 26th and we still do not have our refund. It says "reserve posted". Husband needed emergency surgery and all forms completed as requested. No reason for this long of a wait. Had car rental insurance and our timeshare insurance for the villa and all money refunded within 10 days. Like others said, no one answers phone and you have to wait for a call back.

I purchased a celebratory flight with my brother and cousin to travel to Europe. One month after the purchase I had an infection develop that prohibited me from flying for an extended length of time. I followed the process for starting a claim with Trip Mate and provided all the necessary and required documents. Four months later it was determined that Trip Mate felt that I did meet the qualifications for a cash refund and issued a travel voucher despite the fact that I cannot fly (which was listed on the paperwork my doctor filled out).
After discussing with a Trip Mate rep, I was told that it was not possible for anyone to reconsider my case, and that I must now go through an appeal process (which is still not a guarantee). How is this fair practice? There is discrimination in Trip Mate for pre-existing conditions, and they feel that they do not need to express why. The worst part of the experience was having their representative tell me that I should have known that I could get sick because of all of the surgeries I have had (which you the doctor had to tell them, as required by their form). How is that right?? How could they judge me?? I may not be well, but I was clear to fly prior to getting sick. No matter what, I do not and will not recommend this company to anyone. They have no regard for people, Trip Mate just wants your money.

DO NOT use this company for your travel insurance. They NEVER answer the phone. Their automated call service is a cruel joke. The online claim tracking system is screwed up as well. Once claim is "processed" it no longer appears in this system. So, I can't get them on phone and can't see my claim in the online system. I paid a significant amount of money to cover myself and my family (4 people) on an Asia trip. The heretofore reputable broker on the trip suddenly defaulted very near to the departure date and had not paid any of the prepaid ground in Asia excursion costs. Hence my $32k prepaid was at risk. The Trip Mate policy was supposed to cover Tour Operator default and Agent Commission so long as all conditions were met. I rebooked the trip through my travel agent directly w/ the Japan Ground Operator and paid a second time assuming that Trip Mate would refund the original deposits and Agent commission. In the end, my credit card company actually refunded the entire original deposit. However, not being certain if a refund would or would not occur from any party, I made the claim with my Travel Agent's advice with both parties.
Trip Mate claims management was impossible, yes impossible to deal with. Long delays, never returning a call per commitment, long hold times and then disconnect, providing incorrect status information and in the end providing no commission coverage to my travel agent even though Trip Mate confirmed with me that I wanted that coverage provided to my agent and they would pay it. I travel considerably Internationally and have always used this coverage and will not ever use them again and I strongly suggest; buyer beware here. I felt like they were doing everything possible and egregiously so, to find a way not to finalize this claim. My Travel Planner has since discontinued selling this insurance to any of her clients.

To begin with we purchased trip insurance through our travel agent not knowing anything about Trip Mate. We were traveling to Ireland and thought it would be a good idea to protect ourselves since the trip was very costly, and our first trip overseas. A couple of months before our scheduled departure my Father in law became unable to take care of himself and it fell to my wife and I to take care of him. I talked with our travel agent who suggested we file a claim with our trip insurance aka Trip Mate. I pulled up Trip Mate on the internet and was horrified by all the negative reviews. We really had no other options so went ahead and filled out the lengthy claim form.
I will say the physician's page is the most important aspect of the claim form. You must have a signed statement from a physician on the claim form as to why you are unable to take the trip. We included a signed letter as well. We sent in the claim form and immediately received an email verifying that they had received the documents and to follow the progress of the claim online. I will say it takes about a month of paperwork before it made it to the claims department. The claims department worked on our claim for about 3 weeks and did in fact approve the claim. They sent an e-check to Deluxe checks who emailed to us shortly after.
You will not receive any emails during claims process, but can follow progress online. I did make a few calls during the process and recommend to opt for call back as wait times are lengthy. I was always called back. Their reps basically had same info that is online. Overall I will say the process although lengthy (about two months from start to finish) was a positive experience. Please do not be discouraged by the negative reviews. We filed a legitimate claim and were taken care of. Thanks to Trip Mate our trip was protected.

My wife and I purchased Trip Mate Insurance from Collette Tours when we decided to take a trip on April 3, 2017 To Ireland. While on the trip, I became sick and had to see a doctor and also get some prescriptions filled that the doctor recommended. Total bill for both were $100. I filed the claim to get my money on 04/17/2017. I sent all the required documentation and did not hear from them. I called twice and the last time I was told this plan was an Excess Plan. It only pays the amount your other insurance plan does not cover. They don't tell you it's a third-party insurance company with shady rules until after you make the purchase. They wanted an Explanation of Benefits indicating the amount paid or denied for the submitted expenses from my insurance company.
I told them my insurance was Medicare and Bankers Fidelity and they did not pay for overseas expenses, that's the reason I purchased their insurance. They insisted that I send them an Explanation of Benefits from my secondary policy. I made a copy of them from my insurance policy and forwarded it to them on 6/13/17. After a couple of weeks I called them again and they stated that they needed a copy of the Explanation of Benefits from the Insurance Company stating the amount paid or denied. I contacted my insurance company and explained to them what Trip Mate required and they stated they would forward the information requested. 08/02/17.
After another several weeks I received a letter indicating that they needed the Explanation of Benefits within the next 21 days of the claim would be closed. I forwarded a copy of the information my insurance company sent me and have not heard from them. 08/23/17. I submitted the claim in April 2017 and here it is in September 2017, five months later and still have not settled the claim. It takes an excruciating process to get a customer service person on the phone and receive any updates. They do not return calls or answer their phones and if you're lucky enough to get someone to answer the phone they do not tell you the truth and constantly change their stories. The website is useless. They have a very poor or worst customer service.
I see this situation as this company has no accountability or responsibility to consumers except to reach inside their wallets and take their hard earned money. Being hypocritical and racing to the nearest bank is what your company is all about and not focusing on the value your customers truly have on increasing your bottom line and profit margins if done honestly. This company is truly a crooked and is running a scam on travel insurance. Friendly advice. Don't purchase any protection plan from TRIP MATE!! They will just give you a headache. Collette Tours should partner with someone else because these people suck!!!

I reserved a all inclusive vacation package through Apple Vacations and purchased travel insurance through Trip Mate. Due to airline cancellations my trip was delayed for a day and a half resulting in me having to fly economy versus the First Class seat purchased and missing the first night at the all inclusive resort in Jamaica. Upon my return I immediately contacted Airline who promptly issued a refund on August 10th of the difference in fare paid for the first class seat. Unfortunately the refund check was sent to Apple Vacation who held it for over a month before returning funds sent to them on my behalf. I should note that Apple Vacation's "travel agency" did absolutely nothing to assist in rebooking flights when the airline canceled or in requesting this refund. When I contacted them about my refund they lied and said it takes a month to get mail from the airline!
In regards to Trip Mate, I submitted a complete claim as indicated in their own records on August 7th. I was told that it would take 2 to 3 weeks to process the refund for the missed night at the resort. When I called this morning to once again check on the status of my refund the representative told me that my completed claim had not been received until August 28th which was not true. The only thing that occurred on August 28th was my phone call to the company to let them know that they had an incorrect telephone number. I advised the representative of this and also advised him that another representative had also confirmed the August 7th receipt of my completed claim.
When I asked to speak to a Supervisor I was told that there wasn't anyone available and that my only option was to call back (I was on hold for almost a hour for this call). I wish I had read the reviews on both Apple Vacations and Trip Mate before utilizing their companies for my trip. I will never again use either one and hope that other buyers will beware.

We were all set to go on a Gateway to Eastern Europe tour when a serious health problem occurred to my husband. It's been almost two months since we initiated our claim with them and we still have not been reimbursed. Every day they have new, ridiculous excuses for us not receiving e-checks they supposedly issued - "Have you looked in your Spam box" was a favorite with all their reps.
Then they asked me to call the e-check issuer - which I refused. My contract is with Viking and Tripmate, not with some money-changers. Please, Viking, help me recoup my substantial moneys. Also, after the treatment from Trip Mate (or Tripmate) I should get a discount from the $1,230 paid to them. And, Viking clients, you can go and get your own trip insurance (which I had not been aware of). Trip Mate has a very bad track record - check it yourselves.

The following is what occurred when we attempted to leave for our river cruise on June 14, 2017: Our Itinerary had us booked on United Flight 326 (departing at 2:10 PM) from Orlando airport to Washington-Dulles airport connecting with United Flight 989 (departing at 5:20 PM) from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt, arriving in Frankfurt on June 15, 2017 at 7:20 AM. From Frankfurt, we were booked on Lufthansa Flight 1336 to Budapest - our final destination.
All flights at Orlando airport were grounded due to lightning strikes and severe storms on the East Coast. Our United Flight 326 from Orlando to Washington-Dulles originally scheduled to leave at 2:10 PM was delayed until 8:15 PM causing us to miss our connecting flight at Washington-Dulles. We were then not able to travel from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt due to the missed connection at Washington-Dulles airport.
The airline was not helpful, telling us that the delay affected the entire East Coast and we had a good chance of making our connecting flight. This was not the case. There was no delay at Washington-Dulles. Our connecting flight to Frankfurt (United Flight 989) left Washington-Dulles on time. We missed it due to the delay at Orlando.
The next available flight from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt that we were able to book was United Flight 989 leaving June 15, 2017 at 5:20 PM arriving in Frankfurt on June 16, 2017 at 7:20 AM - a 24-hour delay and we were not guaranteed a flight from Frankfurt to Budapest. We were supposed to arrive in Budapest on June 15th to begin the trip.
I spoke to two agents at Trip Mate (one agent is Kathleen **) while we were delayed at Orlando and was told if there was a 24 hour delay we could cancel the trip. (Our trip was for 7 days.) We attempted to book an earlier flight to Frankfurt if any were available on the same day or early the next day out of Washington-Dulles. No flights were available. Because it was weather-related we would incur all hotel and transportation expenses related to the delay because airlines do not cover these expenses. Our pre-paid transportation arrangements in Budapest would not be available and would be our responsibility. We would miss more than one day of a 7-day trip.
After being assured by Trip Mate that cancelling WAS AN OPTION, we returned home. Because we arrived home late in the evening, I called Avalon the next day to let them know we cancelled the trip. I opened a claim online with Trip Mate and submitted all documentation in hard copy, including e-Tickets, Itinerary, proof of payment to Avalon, and a detailed explanation of the circumstances. On August 1, 2017, I received a call from Trip Mate stating that Flight 326 was not cancelled and Trip Mate would need to do more investigation.
Recently, I received a letter and two checks – each for $1000 (for Diane ** and Gerald **). The letter states that, "As there was no cessation of services for 12 hours we cannot review under trip cancellation or trip interruption. Maximum benefit has been met." The Comments on the reverse side of the letter were as follows: "1. Expenses incurred for your return arrangements were prepaid through the assistance company. 2. The policy does not provide for reimbursement of the original unused airline tickets." This is double-speak because we did not arrange our own transportation. We booked everything through Avalon. We are extremely unhappy and disappointed. The reason for purchasing trip insurance is for situations such as this. We spent the entire day at the airport and were looking forward to the vacation. We will continue to pursue this. I sincerely hope that Globus can make this right and stand by one of their customers.

Viking paid the refundable portion recently, so they are off the hook. But Tripmate is either stalling, incompetent, or both. I filled out the claim form on their website in July. All seemed fine. When I called a few weeks later to find out the status, I was told that the website is (and apparently WAS not working). (It seemed okay when I entered the info earlier).
Okay, so they told me they would mail me the claim forms. Fine, as of 8/31/17, I am still waiting. So I called them... line was busy. But I could "leave a message and they will call me ASAP". Okay, Fine, "The the message is..." they will call when they open the next business day. No, I don't want a wake up call from Missouri. So now I phone Viking. They expedited assistance by getting a Tripmate person to phone me and promise they would send me the claim forms. But it will take from 7-9 days to get here. From 8/31/2017. Okay, whatever. Bottom line, so far it has been a problematic and frustrating experience. And they still will be analyzing my claim. We are not even to that point yet! So it will take months. Our travel agent told us that we get a full refund for any reason what so ever if we are unable to travel (death, sickness, work. etc etc etc). It was the day of our vacation at the airport waiting for our flight. We had some time to grab something to eat. Everyone wanted to eat different things. My husband and middle daughter ate the same thing from the same place, eggs sausage and potatoes. Shortly after eating my daughter become ill. At which time I thought it was because she had had too much to drink the day before. She said she was fine.
Upon boarding the flight and in our seats my husband became ill too. He went to the bathroom. After being in the bathroom for 20 minutes the flight attendant asked me to check on my husband. I went back and checked on him he asked if they could give him a few minutes to see if he feeling better. At this point, he was just dry heaving. The attendant spoke to the captain and said that we need to have medical come check him out b/c he did not want to divert to another airport during the flight. It could take hours for medical to come check him out we were told. At this point, we were 30 minutes late for take off. Upon hearing this from the flight attendant and asking for a few more minutes to see if he was feeling better, the captain called and spoke to another attendant told her that my husband was unable to fly on this flight. So we were asked to leave (kicked off). So we left the flight.
Upon waiting for the Apple rep at the gate my husband was feeling much much better (10 minutes later. We asked to get back on the flight and the captain said no. At this point we thought it was food poisoning, And in fact, it was. We called Apple to see what we needed to do next. We were told the next flight was not till 2 days later non-stop/Frontier. Our vacation was only 6 days total with the 6 day leaving the resort at 7 am. Counting as a day. So we booked another flight for later that day with another company. My husband had not had any more problems with becoming ill (sign for food poisoning). We got to the resort late that night.
Came home and started the paper work to get our refund for the flight we were kicked off and new flight to get there. They denied our claim because he did not seek medical. We had talked to our family dr. about this problem. He said at best they would had done some labs and and i.v. But there was nothing really else that they could have done because he was not showing any more signs. Very unhappy. I am contacting an lawyer to see what can be done against this company.

So I canceled that flight and booked an alternate flight a few days different to the first flight. Asked CheapOair to transfer my insurance to the new flight. The consultant was adamant I had to change it with Trip Mate. As I found out today Trip Mate do not cancel and alter insurance plans. Trip Mate can have the $79 for nothing, but I promise you this, I will NEVER deal with Trip Mate again. What a scam. I bought this policy in good faith. Totally disgusted.

This expensive insurance ($1,000) for two was paid at the time of booking to cover pre-existing conditions. While on a trans-Pacific cruise in April/May I developed a serious asthmatic bronchitis. As a retired medical doctor traveling with a cardiac pacemaker, insulin pump and CPAP machine, I treated myself successfully with medicines I always travel with but remained short of breath with any modest activity on shore excursions. Shortly after returning home, we decided to cancel the active trip with Overseas Adventure Travel booked for this September and covered by TripMate for fear that all the activity would be too much for me to handle after this experience. OAT returned everything paid except the cost of the insurance and a $600 cancellation fee. They told me to file a claim with TripMate for the $600. I filled out all the forms, answered all the questions and carefully explained my illness to them. That was on May 17.
Several emails later they asked for an attending physician's statement and I again explained that I was self-treated. On July 17, they finally decided that they would not refund the $600 without an APS signed by another physician licensed on the Pacific Ocean stating that my illnesses would interfere with the planned trip. I wrote to them that returning $600 would be way less than having to pay for treatment and a return home from Europe in September but they ignored this and even refused to address me as Doctor **.
The company brags about their cancel for any reason policy, but it is obviously not nearly that simple -- just what you might expect from insurance companies that are very quick to demand payment but very resistant to paying even small claims. They are supposedly sending us two travel vouchers for $300 each to be used within one year on another OAT trip, but these trips are all too active for me now. Their several correspondences and one phone call were distinctly both uncaring and unfriendly. They really don't seem to care at all.

After approximately 2 1/2 months Trip Mate did reimburse me for my claim. I will give them credit for that. However when I first filed my claim I was told it could take up to 25 days to get a resolution, not 70+ days! I was on the phone with their customer service many times. I would probably buy the insurance again, but I hope I never have to file a claim again, its very frustrating.

My fiancee got sick in Punta Cana in May. We spent a day of our expensive vacation at the hospital. Trip Mate just completely gave me the run around after I entered a claim, asking for more and more information. Now they want her health insurance information. She doesn't have health insurance, and I have told them that over and over. It doesn't matter, they tell me they still need an explanation of benefits. SHE DOESN'T HAVE INSURANCE, how can she have an explanation of benefits? And even if she did have health insurance it wouldn't cover her traveling out of the country, no health insurance covers that! They know that! That's why we bought the travel insurance. Obviously they are not going to reimburse me. FRUSTRATING!

This is the most deceitful insurance company I have ever dealt with -- reaching them is difficult and when you do you are given a different answer from every person you speak with. I spent many hours documenting a claim because I was told that was what I needed to do by one person and just found out that not one penny will be covered. Time for a lawyer.

The company is non responsive, does not return calls and is either incompetent or interested in avoiding any payout at any cost. They cannot be reached by phone. They do not return calls after shutting you to leave name and number. Call backs are not received. Emessages are not responded to. I found a local number to get around call center number and though the receptionist wants to help the claim processing and the appeals units are the most robotic workers ever. Very bureaucratic. Getting anybody beyond line staff is impossible. Corporate hides their number - you end up at call center. I guess I have to call the news.

I purchased travel insurance for a trip from NY to FL in March. NY was hit with Winter Storm Stella, a State of Emergency was declared and everyone was asked to stay off the roads. Our flight was canceled; we rebooked for the next day and it was canceled again. Trip Mate denied our claim because in order to receive a refund we needed to be hijacked, quarantined, our home destroyed by fire, we had to be in a car accident on the way to the airport, the airline went on strike, we were called to active military duty or our city was hit by a terrorist attack!! Honestly, Winter Storm Stella and a State of Emergency wasn't good enough to get a refund. Stay away from this company!!!!

My sister then paid full fare to go with me because it was too late to transfer my husband's ticket. She also purchased travel insurance through Trip Mate because we still had faith in Trip Mate. I purchased Trip Mate Insurance for a long overseas trip. I selected a pretty comprehensive plan as I knew I would be traveling for a while and in many different countries. I submitted two claims which were fully within the terms of the plan as to what the plan covers. Both claims took forever to process and it was an excruciating process to get a customer service person on the phone and receive any updates. What's even more infuriating is that both claims were denied for no good reason. It then took me another long process to appeal the decision, which was again denied. What a colossal waste of time, money and energy. I highly suggest you do not use their service.

I bought Trip Mate Travel Insurance through AAA for our trip to Italy. We were celebrating our 50th anniversary. In Italy I became sick and had to see a doctor and also get some prescriptions filled that the doctor recommended. Total bill for both were $175. I filed the claim to get my money on 11/14/16. My own insurance company Cigna reimbursed me for most of it. Trip Mate was responsible for about $45. It is now June 2017 and this company has not paid me anything after I followed their instructions on how to get them to pay the $45. They do not return calls or answer their phones and if you're lucky enough to get someone to answer the phone they do not tell you the truth and constantly change their stories.
My question is with all these complaints why is this company still in business. Also AAA will be hearing from me about recommending this travel insurance company. The travel agent also tried to help me recover the money and they never called her back and she also could never get a real person to answer the phone. Yet when my friend was in a car accident and I needed to make changes I was told unless I had a doctor saying she was too sick to travel in an official document I would not be reimbursed for any changes.
I'm not sure how this service is legal as the service they provide is drastically different from what they advertise. What's worse is if you make a complaint with the local BBB they know the company by name and have representatives from BBB on a first name basis with their company. Yet with this knowledge of a history of complaints the company is still accredited from the BBB. Just don't waste your money with this as you can't cancel like they say you will be able to. Because of the commercials and integrity of this company we did not hesitate to enroll in Trip Mate Travel Protection Plan. Upon trying to cancel the trip, which we thought was covered for any reason, we were told that it would be $100.00 per person and $1438.00 for the Trip Mate insurance. Their reasoning was that since we would have to pay Viking Cruises $200.00 for cancellation that we were "using" the insurance and that it would be activated. We did not receive any information regarding a time frame for cancelling the trip so that we could get our money back regarding the insurance. BE AWARE and do not buy this insurance. HOWEVER, I called Trip Mate, to make a claim for the airfares (called SEVERAL times and left my phone # to call back, one of their options, NO return call). FINALLY I called back and waited almost 1 hour for a live person.
Started the process, for 3 different air trips, (1) for Phila to San Diego, (2) San Diego to Las Vegas, (3) Las Vegas to Phila. I sent ALL information, which were 3 different claim #s. It took weeks of trying to contact them, I sent ALL info by FAX. Then Finally I get a check dated 3/24/17 for the #1 air trip to San Diego. More phone calls in April... As I read the other reviews I see a familiar pattern occurring in with Trip Mate charges a very high fee ($700 in our case) then refuses to honor its contractual obligations. My boyfriend purchased Trip Mate insurance for a trip in Feb. 2017. In November 2016 he was diagnosed with throat cancer, which has one of the most severe and painful treatments of any type of cancer. He contacted Trip Mate during the appropriate period and supplied them with endless documentation, including the lengthy report they required from his oncologist.
Like others have expressed, Trip Mate kept requiring more documentation over the 6 months from which he filed his claim -- only to be denied any reimbursement. What reason did Trip Mate give? They said he didn't have a sickness! If cancer isn't a sickness, then what is? They said he could have gone on the trip despite having documentation from his oncologist that he would require two months of chemo and daily radiation treatments from Jan. to March and wouldn't be able to travel until after July.
The radiation and chemo required for this cancer typically requires a feeding tube, and two months after the treatment my boyfriend still can't eat solid foods and requires Ensure to survive. Needless to say, this fraudulent company has caused undue stress during a time in which he is fighting for his life. Naturally, he would have much preferred to be on our planned vacation instead of in a cancer ward. I am completely disgusted by Trip Mate and don't understand why they haven't been investigated for fraudulent and deceptive practices.
Trip Mate seems to imply we can get vouchers (I can't be sure because the letter is so badly written). This is not appropriate because 1) we were offered the same voucher by the tour company without having to shell out the $700 we paid Trip Mate; 2) as a cancer patient who still cannot eat solid food, there is a strong likelihood that he will not be able to travel before the voucher's expiration date.
Someone on this site recommended filing a complaint with the insurance commissioner, which we are doing. I highly recommend everyone who has been ripped off by these con artists to do the same. From the very badly written letter we received (bad grammar, many words capitalized that should not be, such as "You" and "Your") they try to make their communications look like legalese, but in fact, are just uneducated people writing these documents. I would also suggest all people who have been scammed by this company look into filing a class action lawsuit since so many of the stories are the same.

This is the letter I wrote to the President of Trip Mate -- Dear Mr. Finkle: I am writing to express some concerns with some travel insurance that my husband and I purchased for a recent trip to Barbados back in February of this year from your company. First, I would like to take this opportunity to say that your organization does not deliver what you promise. Example number one: Our trip was February 18 through February 28th, 2017 and upon our return I immediately contacted Trip Mate to file a claim and was told I would have the issue resolved within 30 days and it took two months to receive my denial notice. Your very own LinkedIn page says that you offer a state of the art claims and handling department designed to specifically assist customers and to provide them with peace of mind knowing their vacation investment is protected.
Personally I don't believe the customer having to go online six weeks after the claim was filed to check on the status and then having to resort to calling customer service each week requesting to speak with a supervisor and rarely even getting to speak with a live person, as being very state-of-the-art. A better representation would be that your organization has chosen to join the ranks of those who hide behind the internet and focus on the almighty dollar instead of actually being customer focused and offering a service. I find it very disheartening that an upset customer does not have access to speaking with management if they so desire to share their concerns and ask relevant questions to their very own claim.
Being an honest individual seems to have hurt my claim versus protecting my investment, which is what most normal individuals purchase insurance for in the first place. On Tuesday, February 14th I visited an urgent care physician for diagnosis and medication for what I believed to be a urinary tract infection and was treated for such with a shot and prescriptions. The physician said I would be fine to go on my trip as planned originally and to continue taking all prescribed medications for the allotted time period, for which I followed his direction. By Friday of that week I was feeling 100 percent better and was getting excited for our getaway to Barbados, but a few days into the vacation, I started to feel worse and chose to visit the on-resort nurses office for assistance. The nurse and I agreed it would be best to have a doctor examine me and possibly provide additional or new medications to alleviate my discomfort and pain.
Medically speaking I don't know how Trip Mate could not be held responsible for refunding my $560 claim because there is no way to prove if this situation was a pre-existing condition or a brand new occurrence that manifested itself after my arrival to Barbados. If you recall, I was taking the medications as prescribed and felt 100% better within 3 days of visiting the doctor in the United States. Trip Mate chose to deny the claim because in their opinion the illness occurred before the plan was actually in effect; therefore they are not legally obligated to reimburse me for my out-of-pocket expenses from having to see a physician in Barbados. I beg to differ.
If your organization chooses to not reimburse me for my out of pocket expense for seeing a physician that is certainly your prerogative, but rest assured I will utilize every social media platform and go on local tv stations stating our differences of philosophy regarding this matter. Any normal human being would have not gotten on the airplane and went on vacation when ill. In fact, I would have thought it would be more expensive for Trip Mate to have to reschedule the resort, air fare and ground transportation for cancelling the trip. Your company is not even really out anything because of the two policies that were purchased for my husband and me.
The logic behind the denial simply does not make sense to me and being a woman of character and value persuades me to take necessary action into my own hands, warning consumers of your business practices especially after reading this sentence on your Linkedin profile, "we were the first company to make available provisions to waive the policy exclusion for pre-existing conditions through-out our product line." Professionally I see this situation as your company has no accountability or responsibility to consumers except to reach inside their wallets and take their hard earned money. Being hypocritical and racing to the nearest bank is what your company is all about and not focusing on the value your customers truly have on increasing your bottom line and profit margins if done honestly.

NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. THEY ARE A FRAUD AND SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE MISSOURI GENERAL'S OFFICE. I purchased a ticket for my son who had a medical issue and was suppose to be released but the doctors wanted him to stay longer. I provided all the documentation and written letters from his doctors that he could not fly, but then this company made up something about a 60 day period for pre-existing conditions so I purchased the ticket one day before the 60 days were up (convenient, if I would have purchased the next day, they would have told me a 61 day period) and denied the refund and I still have to pay for the travel insurance.
I believe the people that claim they work at this company are actually in a mental hospital and are working for free. They made no sense at all when I called to dispute it. I should have known when I saw that they were located in Kansas City I was going to have issues. They are probably too busy stuffing their face with "barbecue" and steaks. Dealing with a cow town company this is what you get.

If I could add minus stars I would. My wife who happens to be wheelchair bound purchased Trip Mate travel insurance when making a booking with CheapOair. NEVER AGAIN! And that includes CheapOair! We live in Malta, Europe but as my wife was traveling to visit her mother in Florida, it was much easier to pay in USD, not €, I therefore booked her through CheapOair.com not .co.uk.
The first time I tried to contact Trip Mate was to inform them that my wife's luggage hadn't arrived at her destination. I was told by a 'noreply' email that I should complete a form to include information, which for obvious reasons, I didn't have at my disposal, and return it within 24 hours! A little difficult as my wife and I were in different hemispheres and due to her illness and lack of internet facilities, communication was impossible. Not to mention that internet contact details are not provided and once one gets through by phone one has to wait for ages and then asked to leave a message. I want to speak to a person not a machine.
On her return home I found that my wife had been sick during her trip and had had to use the US health service facilities. I consequently filed a medical expense claim to which a reply was received 1 month later asking for information which had already been provided! I replied by mail (calling was a total waste of time) and I had no email contact details. A reply was received repeating the same question which had already been answered TWICE. O yes, there is a place on the medical claim form where information on exactly the same query can be provided!! Consequently trying to make a call to the number provided is a waste of time not to mention the 7 hour time difference and call costs! Frankly I doubt very much if at this rate, the claim will ever be viewed let alone paid out.
I will certainly not recommend anyone to use what seems to be a 'cowboy' company. Finally, I wish to add that I have booked flights through CheapOair on many occasions and even recommended them to friends and relatives, but I doubt if I will again, if they continue to use Trip Mate. From my experience and having read other customer reviews, Trip Mate seems to be a very unprofessional company with a disregard for customer service and satisfaction.

On hearing this we booked a flight to California for a final trip to his childhood home and to meet his sister who had found through Facebook. Susannah's trip was shorter than ours, due to work, and was booked through a different online company, CheapOair.
The insurance company CheapOair provided was TRIP MATE. Our flight was booked through Virgin America and we paid for insurance provided through Virgin, AIG travel insurance. To make a long story short, AIG insurance paid quickly for the airfare when my husband lost confidence and could not make the trip due to his failing condition. Trip Mate has only just today informed me they will not pay the refund. The main reason being that Michael's failing health did not qualify for their interpretation of the word "sickness". After a year and a half of lost reports and not to mention the 35 hoops I had to jump through, it was denied based off some random sub-paragraph that you can't read. Basically I spent all that time to try and recover nothing. The reason they denied the claim in the end? ARTICLES CANNOT BE LEFT UNATTENDED!!! Are you serious?!? Because it's required to rate with a star, I had to click 1... but in all honesty, this company does not deserve even a star after my experience. I bought this insurance when I booked my ticket with Cheapoair online. I was flying from SFO to LA to Chengdu. Because of the weather condition in SFO, the initial trip was delayed for more than 2 hours; causing me to miss my connecting flight to Chengdu. The plane companies involved were washing their hands saying that it's not their responsibility that I missed the flight and to put me in another flight. In short, I have to buy new tickets (LA-Chengdu; Chengdu-SFO), among others.
When I came back, I filed a claim... only to encounter more problems: (a) it takes forever for a representative to answer the call; (b) their 15-day policy was not followed--I filed the claim last January; now it's already March; (c) after a long wait, I was told that they will refund the hotel (for a night stay in LA), but not the tickets I bought because of the delayed SFO flight and the missed LA-Chengdu flight. Honestly, it feels like I haven't been insured at all. Learning for the day: Trip Mate Insurance is NOT an Mate for any Trip. It doesn't insure you at all. Money wasted.

As an experienced traveler, I arrived in Lima Peru to begin an adventure and 6 hours into my trip, my purse was stolen at La Panka Restaurant during our group lunch with our Overseas Adventure Travel Guide and group of 12. Upon returning home, I submitted all insurance forms required and carefully listed additional expenses. My trip was interrupted for two days and I missed several activities with the group. Lots of red tape ensued. Had to apply for a new passport, etc. I mailed claim to Travel Mate via certified mail on Jan. 20, 2017. After calling every other day from Jan. 9 as I was to told claim evaluation took fifteen business days. After 30 days, I received a letter from Trip Mate stating that I would receive a lesser check for my passport and they needed a receipt for my purse, which I listed under items stolen.
It is a nickel and dime company that obviously has one goal and that is to wear down the claimant and pay as little as possible. It is clear that OAT and Trip Mate seem to work in tandem as I have called OAT and they tell me there is nothing they can do. This is not acceptable. Nothing was mentioned about trip interruption reimbursement which is listed in the fine print of the insurance documentation.

I called to fill out travel claim form which their rep emailed me after completing to identifying info I gave her. The claim form said it had to be mailed & gave the address. I sent it certified on 1/25/17. On 2/9, I checked their website & there was no record of its receipt. The Post Office tracking said they had attempted delivery on 1/28 (a Sat), closed & it was delivered on 1/30. I called & spoke to a rep who searched & could find no record of it. She then gave me an email address. I said that's what I wanted to do to begin with. She asked if I had gotten the form by myself or via their phone rep. I said their rep & she said the rep should have given me the email address to file the claim. (IT should be on their forms.) I said I would scan it & email it & requested priority handling.
I sent all copies of the original claim & copies of the certified receipt & tracking record with it. I waited a few days & checked the status & now both the 1/30 claim & the 2/9 submission were showing as received without any activity done. On 2/21 I called & spoke to a rep who told me they had them & their standard for finalizing claim was 15 working days. I said this was the 15th day from the 1/30 original receipt date. She said they were running behind. I said I want it processed that day and asked for a supervisor who was unavailable but called me the next day (2/22) & told me she had good news that they were sending me $2776.00.
The claim history shows final payment entered 2/23, final payment printed 3/1. I received the check today 3/6 and it was postmarked 3/3. This is atrocious claim service. I will never insure with Trip Mate again and complained to Overseas Adventure Travel to stop using them. I hope they find another carrier. My airline claim was promptly handled by Allianz and the funds received weeks ago. It was filed the same day via email and handled timely.

My mother and aunt recently purchased trip insurance from Trip Mate as peace of mind in case they needed to alter their trip to Germany to visit my grandmother who is in very poor health. My aunt has had an issue with her arm and leg for years now (sometimes goes numb). She had seen a doctor for this, but the doctor finally decided it was something they needed to look into further, so he ordered an mri. The mri was done the day after the tickets were purchased. The mri revealed that she had a cervical spondylosis with myelopathy. He advised her against any kind of travel. In fact, he said if she hit her body just right, she could be paralyzed for life. So the trip was cancelled, and my aunt went under the knife. The surgery was successful, and she is now able to travel safely. During the entire process, Trip Mate was made aware of the situation, and a claim was filed.
The process took way longer than the representatives advised it would take. The claim was denied for a "pre-existing condition". They appealed, and were denied (after several weeks elapsed again) for the same reason. We explained that my aunt never knew she had this condition until after the tickets were purchased thanks to the mri. Who in their right mind would purchase almost $2k worth of tickets knowing that they could be paralyzed if the plane hits turbulence? So to make a long story short, my family is now stuck with buying another round of tickets with money they really can't afford to spend. Meanwhile, my grandmother is holding on for dear life so she has a chance to say goodbye to her daughters before she passes. This company should be ashamed to be in business. Thanks again for the heads-up!

Useless, worthless, waste of money... What other words can I use to describe Trip Mate. Purchased insurance for a trip to South Africa. 5 people. Cost was around $1000/person. ($5000). Trip was delayed (flight problems) by 1 day. Missed 1st day of animal viewing. Our luggage was delayed for 5 days. After filling out 15 pages of forms we got $91 back. That's a total of $91. They came up with every excuse in the books. Read contract carefully. If it's not SPECIFICALLY stated in the contract they will find a way not to pay for it. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH... WORTHLESS!!! Wish there were negative stars I could give Trip Mate.

On 10/14/15 we purchased round trip tickets to go to FL keys leaving on 1/20/16 on 11/25/15 my husband was put in the hospital for 17 days. He was in no shape to travel for quite some time after he got out. We were hoping to go if the doctor gave him the OK but that did not happen. He had home care 3 days a week & phys. therapy every second day till just about 1 month ago. On 02/22/16 we put our claim in to Trip Mate. They denied the claim stating it was a pre existing condition. If people in this world were all in great health there would no need for ins. and company's like trip mate would be out of business. They should have their licenses revoked. I would not recommend or use any comp. that sells TRIP MATE INS.

I had my first claim with these guys after buying their insurance for years. My wife developed serious pneumonia and we had to cancel. I provided them all info, Dr statement, everything. Keep getting the runaround. I was told it would be adjudicated in 15 Business days. At day 23 I was told it was expedited and I would get a call in two days. No call. I called next day and am being put on hold and then passed around and put on hold again. I think this place is running a scam. DO NOT BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE.

I purchased an airline ticket with the insurance. I had to cancel my trip due to my father's passing away. I contacted Trip Mate, they answered all my questions and I submitted all the information required. They were very helpful and I got my refund. I was not sure about buying an insurance before, but now experiencing the benefit surely I will recommend it. Thank you! Trip Mate.

Trip Mate Insurance only covered 1/3 of the cost of our trip in the form of vouchers despite the "Cancel for any reason" claim they make. I'm pregnant and was unable to travel to the Caribbean due to the CDC's warning (and my doctor's restrictions) surrounding the Zika virus. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE. It's a complete rip off.

I cancelled my daughter's school trip to Paris due to the unfortunate events of the November 2015 Paris attack. I received a denial letter because the attack did not occur within 30 days of departure date. I appealed through the Attorney General's office and was denied. I will be filing suit against Tripmate. Do not recommend using this company, buyer beware!

We were planning on going to Greece in August 2015 and we had to cancel one week before, due to a medical emergency in our immediate family. This is THE most disorganized, inefficient company I have ever dealt with. It is now 12/12/15 and I am still battling with Trip Mate to get our airfare reimbursed, and this is after I've already filed an appeal. I was just told that I could refile my appeal which is absurd. I googled Trip Mate and left a message for the President, Brad Finkle.

I booked a flight with CheapOAir traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico to visit my two first cousins. I booked the flight September 20, 2015. I paid extra for the Tripmate Insurance because I am disabled and my cousins were ill as well. I planned to travel 11/24/15-12/2/15. Well on October 29, 2015, one of my cousins that I planned to visit died. While my family and I were grieving her sister, the other cousin I was coming to see also died, 11/10/15, leaving me with no one to visit. So I called Tripmate to inquire if I could get my money back for the flight ticket. They advised me that it would be covered under the insurance I purchased through Tripmate when I purchased the ticket.
So I submitted a claim on 11/14/15 and at their advice, I cancelled my ticket with CheapOAir. December 7, 2015, I receive a letter stating that my first cousin is not considered a "family member" and is not covered. Therefore, they will not be covering my loss. What good is insurance that does not cover you in the case of an emergency. The insurance is a waste of the consumers money and something should be done to stop them from "false advertising".

I purchased airline ticket from CheapOair in Aug 2015 for a travel date of Nov 6th, 2015 and it was for my mother who lives in Africa, as she was supposed to join me in the U.S. Unfortunately, she changed her mind because she does not want to come in the winter time. I purchased insurance at the time in the event that anything happens such her refusal to come at this time. Now I am asking TRIP MATE for a reimbursement. They have unequivocally denied my claim because it's not a medical or emergency situation. I can't afford to lose $1,300 at this time just like that. "HELP."

My husband and I had to cancel our trip for medical reasons. We submitted all the paper work (3 times) and has been more than 2 months and we had not received any confirmation for our payment. Twice we had submitted medical reports from the hospital and a full package from the medical oncologist. Still no answer. Today, I called and got a recorder asking me to leave my phone number. I WILL NEVER USED THIS COMPANY IN THE FUTURE.

One of our travelers suffered a major illness while traveling overseas and was hospitalized. Trip Mate did a good job securing us new flights home. However, they have not taken care of the additional hotel and travel costs that we incurred due to our situation. I have left many, many messages and no one will call back. When I do reach someone on the phone, they do not have any update on the status. My feeling is that Trip Mate is making this so difficult in the hopes that we will just go away. I would never buy insurance that is serviced through Trip Mate again.

I bought plane tickets insuring with Tripmate on 9/11/15. On 9/15/15, I was diagnosed with cancer and had to schedule emergency surgery on 10/05/15 that required 6 weeks convalescence. I contacted Trip Mate within 24 hours of finding out to start the process of canceling our trip. Our trip was scheduled for the end of November.
Not only did they require the pathology report, they required my surgeon write TWO different letters detailing his surgery and the convalescence, my FMLA paperwork from my employer, and all previous medical records from the VA Medical Center that I normally use to determine if I had any pre-existing illnesses that could disqualify me from getting my flipping refund. Too much! It's not right that I had to give them ALL of my previous medical records to get back my money. This company is a sham. In fact, they should probably be reported for invading their clients' medical records for undue cause. Do not use. Do not use! I will never see my $2,500.00. Never.

Not mentioning one of the longest wait times ever to get a response, TripMate is by far the worst travel insurance company when it comes to military accommodations. Their provision is to process claims for revoked leaves. Although my situation was not for a revoked leave it was for a more serious action which was for amended orders. They seriously asked me to get a letter from my Commanding Officer regarding the change when the orders specifically state the official, BY ORDER OF THE SECRETARY OF THE AIR FORCE. How much more do you need? Then they required that I provide proof that the amendment was for a cause of war. Last I remember, we have been at war for the past decade, and more recently with military intervention with ISIS. This is a silly company with flawed policies and don't EVER use them if you're a military member.

Stay away from Tripmate, they are running a scam. They pay a very small percentage of claims. They will make filing a claim so difficult or impossible, with all the forms they require, and then they will lose your info, and forget to tell you about it. You can call them back and be put on hold forever. Save your money, do not do business with this company.

Due to a medical problem with my wife we had to leave a Vantage tour. We filed with Trip Mate, and within a month and 1/2, they paid even more than we claimed. This included airfare (to rejoin tour), hotel rooms and meals and medical expenses. I neglected to file for the reimbursement for the 2 days of the tour we missed, but they paid that also. We were surprised and pleased.

I lost personal belongings and delayed baggage. After completing all the paperwork, the claims administration arbitrarily either refused or outrightly declined to reimburse me for the items that were even in their own underwritten, covered. I don't what and how to describe it but this is little short of scam. There was no explanation as to their criteria for determining the value of my treasured personal belongings. Am really upset about it. When my most treasured/prized native dress that I made and used specifically for a presidential inaugural event, which is the most prized of all the items, someone spuriously depreciated it by the same value. How nice and convenient for the assessment department to evade responsibility. No thanks.
