EmPower Solar panels and equipment

As a solar installer, EmPower Solar does not manufacture its own equipment. Instead, the company offers equipment from leading solar brands like SunPower and Tesla. Its equipment spans a range of residential needs, including:

  • Solar panels: Its systems typically cover 600 to 800 square feet and weigh as little as a layer of shingles. All systems include additional products like inverters, racking and a monitoring system.
  • In-home electric car charging stations: If you have an electric vehicle, you can get an in-home charging station from EmPower. The company sells AC Level 1, 2 and 3 chargers, plus V3 superchargers. An electric car charging station starts at around $499, with installation costs between $300 and $1,000.
  • Solar battery backup: To truly live off the grid, you’ll need a solar backup battery. EmPower sells the Tesla Powerwall, which stores the electricity generated by your solar panel for the times you really need it. The cost of one Tesla Powerwall is $17,600 before incentives (in some cases, you may need more than one).
  • Whole-home solar equipment: If you need all of the above, EmPower offers what it calls “Total Home Electrification,” which covers every facet of residential solar energy. Its team designs a custom solution, determining the size and shape of your solar system and upgrading your heat pumps and electric appliances as needed.

EmPower Solar installation

Installing a solar solution isn’t an easy task. EmPower’s can handle all aspects of installation, including:

  1. Electricity usage review: Submit a photo of your most recent electricity bill so solar experts can review factors like usage and needs.
  2. Home assessment: EmPower’s in-house technicians conduct an in-person assessment of your property, either by drone or foot. This assessment takes accurate measurements, evaluates roof structure and plans installation locations.
  3. Permit acquisition: EmPower’s dedicated permitting department works directly with local building departments to obtain, complete and submit the necessary construction permits for the project.
  4. Scheduling your project: Once permits are approved, a dedicated project management team schedules installation.
  5. Equipment installation: Each project has a dedicated site foreman who leads the team of solar installers during the installation:
    • Installing a racking system to the roof or ground
    • Connecting solar panels to an external meter
    • Connecting solar panels to interior electrical panel
    • Mounting any backup batteries and electric vehicle chargers
    • Giving homeowners a formal introduction to the new system
  6. Inspection: After installation, EmPower schedules the required final inspections with local jurisdictions and utility providers.
  7. Mobile app download: Once the system is up and running, a tech makes sure you’re connected to the mobile app for monitoring.

EmPower Solar services

In addition to installation, EmPower’s in-house service team offers a few other services, including custom solar system design, thorough roof assessments and system lifetime service. The website is pretty limited on what these services cover (and at what cost), however. Contact the company for more information.

EmPower Solar costs

Pricing is specific to each home or business, taking into account factors like size, roof shape, shade, electricity needs and budget. On average, a whole-home solar system costs $16,715 after the federal tax credit in 2023. Before incentives, the cost usually ranges between $20,000 and 40,000 in New York City. You could pay more or less depending on your situation.

EmPower says customers who purchase their system outright can expect to see a return on investment within four to seven years.

Financing

Customers can choose one of three ways to pay for their system: purchase outright, lease or finance. All three options can make you eligible for most state and federal tax incentives.

  • Financing: You can sign a low-interest loan with term options between five and 15 years with as little as $0 down.
  • Leasing: For $0 down, you can lease your system from EmPower. Leases are for 25 years and offer predictable monthly payments. Customers who lease their system rather than purchase or finance are not eligible for the 30% federal investment tax credit, however.

EmPower Solar warranty

All work is done by an in-house service team and is backed by a ten-year workmanship warranty. The panels and equipment themselves include their own manufacturer warranties, typically between 20 and 25 years. The team also takes extra steps to protect equipment (like putting in squirrel guards) to make sure the system works to its highest potential.

The company doesn’t provide much information about things that may void the warranty, but it’s safe to assume that you have to keep up with regular maintenance (and keep those maintenance records) to maintain your warranty coverage. Read through your contract carefully to understand the rules surrounding your warranty.

Don’t do it!!!! Ryan ** is a great salesman. Sells you promises not kept. I use less electricity but now pay OVER double!!! My system hooked up wrong (inverters). My system stuck on night mode! (Still waiting for tech-been a month). Told him I would buy system in 1-2 yrs. He never told me I was stuck leasing for 5 yrs! Told me panels melt snow. Technicians told me I have to shovel the snow off my roof. I’m a 68 yr old widow!!!! 4 months to install. 6 months later and my system has only worked 2 weeks. They sell you system, but after that… they ignore you!!! Empower blames Palmetto for reimbursement. Palmetto says Empower hadn’t sent paperwork. Ryan ** should be fired. His only concern was me giving him good reviews (and it was before system actually kicked in). I should have waited. Don’t let him scare you into the “rising electrical costs” I now pay over double!!!!!

I was originally told that Empower would warranty the cost of labor to replace any panels that were not working and that the manufacturer would warranty the cost of the parts. When one of panels stopped working, over 9 months ago, we put in a claim for its replacement. Empower basically just threw their hands up and was of no help with moving along this claim.

After all that time and me following up with them regularly and them telling me it should be replaced soon, they are now telling me that if I want them to replace it that they want $1,800 for labor costs. Their reasoning for this is that the manufacturer is not going to reimburse them for the labor costs. So their so called “warranty” was basically them just saying that they will ask the manufacturer to pay them if a replacement is need and if the manufacturer doesn’t pay then they aren’t doing everything without money. Additionally, during that time, one more panel stopped working. They are now saying that they will offer a “complimentary labor service” when we get to six panels down, so for now I just have to deal with the two not working.

When I signed up with this company, it was at a premium to other solar companies. I did so because their marking made it seem like they were of higher quality and that their service going forward would be of a higher standard. In the four years that I have had the panels, 2 are already down and they seem to expect that we will be getting to more down. Their customers service (after installation) has been nonexistent and flat out rude. I would definitely proceed with great caution if considering this company. Though taking legal action for my two down panels may not be financially feasible, I know I am not the only one burned by their warranty loop hole. Please contact me directly if you have also been unable to get empower to honor their warrant, as a class action lawsuit is a definite possibility.

We were researching solar companies and neighbors within our city of White Plains used EmPower Solar and they had positive things to say about them. So we chose to go with them after comparing them to other solar companies.

It was fairly easy to sign up. The gentleman came to our home, laid everything out. Because we had also researched other companies and heard other presentations, we knew what to look for. It didn't feel as though we were being pressured at all to sign or do anything. It was a comprehensive presentation and we felt comfortable signing with them.

We signed, COVID happened. It was just an odd time. It took many months before they were able to install. But once they did, it was fine. It was pretty seamless, straightforward, and kept it moving.

We appreciate it going solar, especially in New York where Con Edison is talking about raising rates. We appreciate the energy, the power that it produces. We see the impact on our electric bill. So, it's been a positive experience for us.

The signup process was easy, and I didn't have any problems with it. Customer service was good. The panels have been installed for about one and a half year. Installation was really easy. One day done. I like it. It's working as expected.

I had them back in 2017. There was a little bit of a hiccup during installation but they took care of any problems they created, and it went smoothly, overall. They were very professional. My bill from 2017 was fixed at $210. With the financing from the government and all the rebates, it went down to $136, plus $13 a month for the line fees. I was very happy, and can't complain about anything.

I'm 100% off the grid. The sign-up was clear and decent. EmPower wasn’t cutting corners, they were just very good and truthful in everything they did. I did have some delays for a few months. There was a shortage of the panels but it was understandable because of the pandemic. I have no one to blame for that.

The installation was good and professionally done. They showed up in the morning and they were done by 4:00 PM, and I enjoyed watching them work. I also had the Powerwall installed, and it’s a big system, so I knew it was gonna be more expensive. But it was still cheaper than other solar companies, so I'm very satisfied with the price.

I had an issue when SunPower went out of business and was no longer providing warranty for the panels. But EmPower took charge of it, so if I have any issues, they will take care of it, and I’m happy with that.

I got EmPower Solar because they had the best reviews of customer service and warranty. So far, it’s been good. I thank God I haven't had to worry about the warranty. It's only been a year, but their customer service has been excellent as well as the quality of products. They've been stellar so far. Aside from my loan I’ve paid nothing for electricity since I got solar, other than the use of the grid.

When I was planning to do the solar panels, I searched a couple of companies. I saw EmPower was in the area and had good reviews so I chose them. Most of the other companies don’t even carry the product that I chose just because it was a very expensive model. The one that did have it tried and said they couldn’t match it. They said that the only reason why I got this lower price was because EmPower had a very close relationship with SunPower where lower manufacturing costs was passed on to EmPower and they were able to pass that same to the customer.

Signing up was pretty easy. It was a little bit involved and there was a lot of the documentation required. They followed up through for everything prior to installation so I didn’t have any issues during the preparation procedure.

The salesperson was a great resource. He was always on top of things, making sure that the process was moving along. He always tried to give me the best deal possible and if I had any questions, he always replied.

I’m overall happy with EmPower. With the solar, so far, it was not bad during the first few months of installation. But now, it’s winter. Obviously, there’s no sun so it sucks.

I had to follow up with them though because during the signup process, they promised a $1,000 refund after the installation completed. Around that same time, SunPower, the company that was connected to the rebate, went bankrupt. So initially, they were not honoring that rebate and I had to chase them around a couple of times and I did get upset. Eventually, they did give the money up.

Unfortunately, the system that they used to check the solar production belongs to SunPower and currently they are still supporting it. But I already received an email in the last few weeks that the company that took over the monitoring system is gonna start charging for some features. What those features are, I don’t know. I’m just hoping that they’re not gonna charge me for the stuff that I’m using right now.

I bought my house, and a bunch of solar companies came, but they were all scams. They were all leasing scams. The prices kept going up and you didn't own the panels and they used Chinese knock-off panels that are not good at all. Then I started researching solar panels and I wanted the SunPower panels. I went on their website and I found EmPower. They've been great. I’ve already referred them to nine people, and everybody loved them.

They got everything done on schedule and installed quickly, they got the permits in five days and completed the installation in one day. I got 28 panels in total. The team was professional and any time I called for service, they're here within a day. I had no issues with them. I’ve had them since 2016, and I’m still paying nothing each month. I think they're probably the best in the business.

I just wanted to try to decrease the electric cost in my home and do something a little green. The signup was straightforward and installation was simple with EmPower. Customer service was great in the beginning, but after I got installed, not as great. I had questions and reached out a few times, and finally had to reach out to my salesperson to get a response from customer service. And then I've emailed them a couple of times with other questions and I don't get any response. But it was as they sold it, as far as the amount of money I would save.
