I recieved a BBQ tool set priced at $19.99 for Christmas without a receipt. I live in an apartment and therefore do not own a grill. So I figured since it said on the back Target Brands, I would return it with no problem. At the time I did not know the price of the product. So I went to the service desk and the lady went to return and then stopped and said you can't because it is over 20 dollars and you need a receipt. So I called and talked to a manager and 3 different guest relation people before finding out that the price is $19.99. Now the lady said she couldn't return because it over $20 bucks. Well it wasn't, it was the taxes. How stupid is that?

I purchased a DVD which happened to cost more than $20.00. When I got it home I noticed the receipt was not in the bag, nor was it given to me. A couple days later, I needed to return the unopened in-tact DVD since the person I purchased it for already had it. Nothing wrong with it. I was then informed by a very rude customer service employee that I could not exchange it without the receipt. I explained how I was not given one, and then was told that this was not their problem. In this case, not only was I faced with a terrible return policy that left me with merchandise I do not want, but the employees on both visits were either incompetent or rude. I will take my business somewhere else.
Had to keep merchandise I don't want, when I would have just turned around and spent the money there anyway.

We are registered at target for our baby. We have been receiving gifts and many that are either without a gift receipt or not on our registry. We went to try and exchange so we could get the things we wanted and were told we could not. I don't know how a business expects to satisfy customers when they don't care about them. To make things even worse, we had been in the previous day and the clerk did not give us our gift receipt back; and when we went back the following day to return items that had been on that receipt, we couldn't. Once again Target shows how they are concerned about there customers by making us suffer for a mistake by their own employee. Maybe if we treated Target the way they treated us and quit shopping there, they might have a better appreciation for the customers who keep them in business.
We were forced to keep duplicate items or those we did not want for our baby because of their stupid and inconsiderate return policy.

I purchased a deep fryer for my sister for her birthday; it was $34.99. She found out her cholesterol is high, and decides not to eat fried foods anymore a week after her birthday. She never opened the fryer; it was sealed with factory tape still. I had bought it about 2 weeks before her birthday, lost the receipt--paid cash--what a mistake. So we go to the store together to EXCHANGE IT. Well she's told per their NEW RETURN POLICY, a receipt is required for ALL RETURNS/EXCHANGES. Two sales clerks and a mgr. told us that if the item is over $20, and you have no receipt, they do not have to take the item back. My sister even said this is a huge box, how could I have stolen something this size? They just kept reciting the return policy to us like robots and gave us the customer service 800# to call about it. I called, and was asked about 10 times, well do you have your receipt? How many times do I have to say I lost it? So no help there.
I refuse to shop there again. If people knew they were doing the same policy as TOYS R US now, they'd stop shopping there. TOYS R US does a no receipt, you get no exchange or return, too. I can't believe Target would adapt the same hated policy.
Out $34.99 cash, and had to buy a new birthday gift for my sister who had to deal with Target's unreasonable policy. I felt horrible.

My wife and I registered at Target for our wedding. We returned six items (bathroom set) to Target. The one item without the receipt was a towel rack. Because the item was over Target's twenty dollar return policy, we are now stuck with it. Target told us to contact the family member that gave us the wedding gift and ask for a receipt. The item is made by Target and holds their emblem on the box. The 800 numbers that Target gave to us for complaints are in Deli, India. We have spoken to seven people, mostly thousands of miles away.
Target has no listed numbers in the US for management--except one: 1-612-304-6073 +4 +4. This takes you to the employee help desk. I am in the process of contacting them now. They lost our business for our baby registry. We're out $21.49.

I wanted to purchase several hundred 4x6 pictures. Their website states they sell them for 0.15 cents. Since this was the lowest price I found in my area, I went ahead and spent several hours uploading 282 pictures. On the last page of the ordering process the price changed from 0.15 cents to 0.20 cents. I called the store and spoke to the manager and he said, "I am sorry, I don't know what to tell you. I have no control over it or know who to tell you to call."
I never would have started uploading pictures to this site if it would have been honest about how much it would cost per picture. I also would have thought that the manager might offer some advice. Isn't it illegal to advertise one price and then charge something else? Now I will go to the other website that claimed they would sell me pictures for 0.19 cents and start uploading pictures there. Five hours of my time is wasted and now my father's Christmas gift is in jeopardy.

The woman refused to listen even though the towels were sitting there faded with treads hanging out before her. Targets receipts warn that you must keep them for 90 days for a refund. Is their merchandise only good for 90 days or what?

My wife and I had purchased a crib set, matching mobile, and blankets for a boy that we were told we were going to have a few months ago. When we were surprised with a girl, we had to exchange a lot of merchandise at various stores. When we went to Target to exchange the bedding and mobile with our receipt, they stated that they will not do it since our receipt is over 90days old. We stated that we were willing to do an exchange and they will not allow that either. We have never heard of an expiring receipt. They still sell the same crib set and mobile - so it is not discontinued.
My wife was in tears, when only 3 days after the birth we were told to donate to the Goodwill for a tax write off or recoup our money by selling it at a garage sale. We are honest people and only trying to set up our liitle girls room but now will have to pay double for it. We have spent a lot of money at Target with us having 6 children, but now we will not shop there anymore. They also train these customer service people to give a statement with no emotion when they tell you that they will not do it. It was so shocking it was not like we were in America.

I went in today to buy some holiday party supplies and was initially struck by the lack of sales associates out on the floor, and also by the fact that the down escalator was not working. Maybe that should have been a sign, but I grabbed the stuff I need and went to ring out, using my debit card. When the transaction cleared the cash register scrolled out a blank receipt. The cashier's response was, Well, are you planning on returning anything? As if that's the only reason someone would want a receipt! I told her that I simply needed a receipt, and could she call a manager over to see what we could do to get one. The manager, had the same attitude as the cashier, she said that if I really wanted a receipt (as thought this were an unreasonable request) they would have to redo the whole transaction, but I wouldn't see a credit for the voided transaction for 48 hours, and I would just have to take their word for it that it would work out, because I had no receipt!
The whole thing was too ridiculous. I decided to just return everything, and forget it. I was then sent to Guest Services where I was told that the reason the receipt didn't print properly was that the charge hadn't actually been made to my card. I said, Fine, but can I get some documentation that I am actually returning this merchandise to your custody. Again, no luck. Well, needless to say, it is now 8:00 p.m., and a charge for $130 just hit my account. When I called Target I was told that they can't do returns within 24 hours, and whoever I dealt with today should have told me that. But, even though it was their mistake in every conceivable respect, I need to go down to that store again to get the charge credited back to my card. Assuming I'm able to at all, since they provided me NO DOCUMENTATION OF EITHER THE PURCHASE OR THE RETURN! I can't deal with Target anymore.

I was fortunate this year to receive Angel Tree gifts for my 3 children. This is an anonymous gift from someone who chose my family. I received the gifts unwrapped with all tags on the clothes purchased at Target. Unfortunately the clothes purchased for my son were all a size too small.
In the past I had no problem exchanging items at Target as long as it was an even exchange for a similar product, but this year they decided to make my son's Christmas exchanges impossible. I had about 5 outfits, all items easily found still at that location, but guest services said only two items per year could be exchanged without a receipt and under $20 value. So I had to choose to exchange only two of the ten items.
They didn't even give the two items exchanged at the regular price. Why is the value changed just because I didn't receive a gift-receipt?

I registered at Target for my baby showers. I registered for the Fisher Price Jumperoo and received two of them, which cost about $70.00 each. Our daughter arrived a month early, so one of the showers was postponed for about a month. When my husband and I took one of the jumperoos back to Target to return it, they refused. The box was unopened, not damaged in any way, and had a Target sticker on it. We were told by the manager that they could not take it back without a receipt, because we had registered in August 2007, and the person who purchased it was not present to show them their driver's license or some other form of ID. Four different people went in on the gift, and I did not want to have to ask who did what in the whole process since they were so kind to buy such a nice gift. The manager said we should call the corporate customer service.
My husband contacted them and the individual he spoke to was very unfriendly and was of absolutely no assistance. She basically told us it was just too bad. I am now advising everyone NOT to register at Target or make any major purchases. It is absolutely ridiculous how they treat their customers. I tried to find a place on their website regarding customer relations and could not find one. That indicates to me that they just do not care about the customer. Whoever is making such policy decisions should be ashamed of themselves!

I was going to purchase a 62 piece tool set that was on sale for $19.00. This was clearly marked on the SALE sign. The 62 piece tool kit rang up for $59.99. They called for someone to check the price. They said the one that was $19.99 was a different one. They asked if I wanted the one on sale, and I said yes. When it was brought to the front it was a drill. I explained to them I wanted the 62 household tool kit set, and they went to get the kit that was on sale. They brought up a 161 piece tool kit set. I explained that I wanted the one that was on sale which was the first one that I brought up to purchase. They would not honor the sale sign and said it was a typo. I asked for the store manager who, of course, was not there.
They gave me their 1-800 number, and I called to complain. I asked the manager on duty if I could have a copy of the sign so that I could show the error to the district and store manager because I was sure that they would correct the error after I had left. I was in the store for more than 45 minutes waiting for them to get it right which they never did. The manager on duty would not make a copy of the sign for me. She said it was Target property and that she could not make a copy. I cannot believe that I was treated so badly. I was given horrible customer service and bad excuses!

At first I was told to go ahead and find the correct size and return to customer service. They did not have the correct size for my mattress, so I asked for a refund for those two items. I was informed that the receipt had expired. i was not aware that receipts expire. I asked to speak with a store manager and fallon stone stated there was nothing he could do. I then called the police to file a report as I intend to go as far as possible with this matter. here now I have $60.00 dollars of merchandise i cannot use, yet because my reciept expired about one week ago,Target refuses to help me out. I called corporate offices, spoke with a Steve and a Pam,and was told nothing could be done at all. These sheets were not used ,not opened. I asked Pam that if I had returned the bed sheets after using them, and returning them without the original package I would have gotten new sheets aslong as my reciept was current? She said yes, but because my receipt expired I was out of luck.
I am stuck with $60.00 worth of bed sheets i cannot use and even though I have been a loyal customer, because of their lack of flexibility and indifferant attitude towards customers. All i wanted was an EXCHANGE, nothing more. It is frustrating AT BEST, and yet another example of bad customer service and corporate indifferance to those that keep these stores in business. This is a mockery to every hard working consumer. $60.00 is not a whole lot of money, but every dollar counts in this day and age where the cost of living is out of control. My aunt and uncle purchased a musical mobile at Target. A few weeks later it fell on my newborn son due to a defective hook in the product. I took it back for an exchange but was told their policy would not allow a return. After trying to get them to simply replace it and their repeated "no's", contacted Target Corporate. I told them my story and they refused responsibility, had no compassion, and didn't apologize.
I contacted the manufacturer, and they will replace the defective part. However, I am reluctant to have it in my baby's crib now. The manufacturer suggested I ask Target to give me a full refund. Target refuses. My family and I have always been fans of Target, but after this incident we refuse to shop Target. Other stores take responsibility and make returns and give refunds for bad products.

I purchased a child's footed pajama set last Sunday November 25th. It was a 3T, and I brought it back today for an exchange for a 2T. I had misplaced the receipt, but all I needed to do was exchange it. The customer service person informed me that I would have to pay the difference between the sale price (which is what I paid for it) and the original price. I immediately asked for the Manager. I refused to pay the DIFFERENCE SINCE ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS EXCHANGE the item for the correct size, not get a refund. This is absolutely the worst policy I have ever encountered. To ask me to pay the difference for an even exchange is totally inappropriate.
The Manager tried to explain that it was Target policy. I insisted that that was terrible customer service and would not pay the difference. I have been a customer for years. She of course did the right thing and gave me an Even Exchange. I will be less likely to shop at Target in the future.

My spouse and I decided to register with Target stores through Club Wed. We were told of no such ridiculous return policy as we realize now Target has. Target's return policy states that if you do not have a receipt or proof of purchase, the item cannot be returned if over $20. If the item is under $20, only two items can be returned per person every year.
We were given gifts that were not on our registry list without gift receipts. We were also given double gifts from our registry without gift receipts. We now sit with all these items that we are unable to return. I am sure if our guests were aware of this policy, they would have given us the gift receipts.

When I got there, they were clearly marked $49.95. At check out, it rang up as $89.99, but I didn't notice because I was fumbling with the card reader.
As I walked out the door, I looked at the receipt realized it was wrong and turned back to the cashier. At this point there were several people in line so I went to customer service where I was told the product had never been $49.95. I went back to electronics and found the rest of the dock stations (4) had been removed from the shelf. When I told customer service that they had pulled the mislabled item, the rep said, well we just can't leave them on the shelf when they are mismarked. I was told that they would give me a 10% discount.

When they went running back to electronics the sales person handed my son-in-law a psp when he asked for the sale bundle. When all three of us met up with each other and went to checkout, we had the wrong psp pricing at $199.00 with no game. The sale was psp with five games for $169.00. We pointed out to Mike that he was not matching the $169.00 price unless he included the five games with the system. There was no swearing, but we were upset since we were in line so long and assured we would get the system. When she attempted to request an exchange (not a return), she was informed of the new return policy which will not allow her to make any exchanges or returns on items unless she has the gift receipt. Several of these items did not come with a gift receipt.
What kind of company as large as Target will not at least give a gift card for the merchandise or and even exchange for a different size?
She is devastated with the fact that if the registry had worked properly perhaps she would have received other items on the list that she could use and not several of just one item. Unfortunately this was not the case. When attempting to return the merchandise I was confronted with contempt by customer service clerks and treated like a criminal instead of an individual who had been shopping there for years.
Apparently there was a Policy change 12 days before the registry was opened. The Target representative who aided in the creation of registry specifically told us that any item on the registry could be returned for store credit. That saved us the tackiness of asking for a gift receipt. To say that I am appalled at Target's lack of concern over this issue is an understatement. The day after a recent trip to the Target in Columbia MO, I noticed a $59.98 item on the receipt. I knew I had not made any purchases in that amount. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the cashier had rung up the $29.99 pair of shoes twice. I called the store and told them I had been charged twice for the same pair of $29.99 shoes. I offered to fax the receipt to them so they could investigate and credit my debit card accordingly.
The Team Member said that I had to bring the receipt and my debit card in and they would be able to take care of it. They said it could not be taken care of over the phone because I had to be there to enter the PIN for the refund. I bring in the receipt and am told that since the item is over $20 the matter has to be turned over to AP (I am assuming that means asset protection.) and they would contact me. AP would not be able to investigate until the next day.
I asked to talk to a manager and explained that it was going to be a great inconvenience for me to make a 2nd trip across town and that I didn't understand why when I called the first time they couldn't allow me to fax the receipt to them so they could at least start investigating it. The Manager very condescendingly tells me that the original receipt is needed for them to start the investigation (I could see that it would be needed for them to issue the refund, but needing it for them to start looking in to the matter seems a little extreme).
I asked if after AP reviewed the security tapes if there was anyway that I could get the refund without making another trip perhaps by crediting it as a credit on the Visa debit card or mailing the refund to me. I was told in a very sarcastic tone that they were very sorry, but I would have to make another trip because AP has to...(I just know that there is going to be a long line when I go there).
Up until this evening, I spent a lot of money at Target. I had purchased all of my cleaning products, laundry products, paper products, toiletries, make-up, table linens and bedding, stationary, DVDs, cat food and cat litter for 3 cats, storage and organization products both for the home and for our business as well as gifts for neices and nephews. I also purchased a lot of snacks from Target and usually got at least one clothing or accessory item for myself or my signigicant other on each visit (I go approximately once a week).
Had they resolved the matter or assured me that I wouldn't have to go to the Guest Service counter a 2nd time I would have taken the opportunity to stock up on cat care items. Instead I did my shopping elsewhere. Within 4 miles of my house, there are 2 different Wal-Mart Supercenters, Staples, Lowe's, Sam's Club, Kohl's, and 2 grocery stores. I drive by all of these places on a daily basis. There is no need for me to drive out of my way to shop at Target.
Target is 8 miles from my house and 2 round trips is going to cost me about $6 for gasoline.

I now find out online that all I needed was my baby registry print out. I live over an hour away from any target (one way) and can't believe how I was treated with no explanation of the policy. Even if the item was not on the registry it came from a baby shower, registered at target and babies R us, where over 100 people brought many gifts. Babies R us has given us no problem with returns even if the item was not on the registry.
My wife who is due next week was extremely irritated and so was my mother and mother in-law. We are expecting three new babies in the next year and many more friends are in the same situation. I will definitely think twice before recommending Target's baby registry. Babies R Us seems to give much less hassle and seems to care about my business.
I do all our monthly shopping at Target ($300 plus monthly) and may start shopping at Wal-Mart.

Their poor automated response:
Thank you for choosing to register at Target, and for taking the time to contact us regarding our return policy. Returns at Target are easy with a receipt dated within 90 days of purchase. As a registrant, we'll allow you to return your gift registry item up to 60 days after your event date if your receipt is expired. I'm sorry that we aren't able to return items without a receipt . If you don't have a receipt, we still have a few options for you:- Your local store will accommodate two no receipt returns a year for you on small gifts under $20. - We have the ability to look up a receipt's information for the gift giver, so they can make a return on most purchases, provided they purchased your item with a check, Target GiftCard, credit or debit card within the past 90 days. - If the gift giver retained the original receipt for the item, they have the ability to reprint a gift receipt at the Guest Service desk next time they visit Target. We appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with us. Your feedback will be useful in our continual review of our return policy. We hope to see you again soon at Target.

When they tried to return these items for store credit, they were told no. I could not believe this policy, so I tried contacting every supervisor and their supervisor and still no luck. I have contacted the CEO and am awaiting a reply. It shocks me that they will accept the merchandise, in the box, never used from a registry for store credit. They would be out NOTHING! But instead, young famiies are being ripped off!

I received several baby items purchased at Target and did not receive gift receipts. I had previously heard about Target's return policy so I called the local McKinney, TX location in advance. The items are new/unused, in original packaging, and I cannot help that the friends/family that purchased these items for me did not keep the receipt. My local store said there was nothing they could do for their policy is not to accept anything over $20 without a receipt. I questioned why this specific part of their policy was not on their website, and they said they did not know what the policy said online but urged me to call their Guest Relations Dept. for an override code that would allow me to return all items. NOT SO!
Target's policy states you must have a receipt to return an item or there is the exception that allows you to return items totaling no more than $20, only 2 times per year, per drivers' license. The supervisor I spoke with said that I could call the friends that purchased the gifts and ask them for a receipt. I will rethink ever making a purchase at Target again.

There was no receipt with the gift but Target Stores was stamped on 4 sides of the 6 sides of the box so I didn't feel there would be a problem returning the item and purchasing something I actually needed. The box has never been opened and Target currently carries the same item in their stores.
I was told that if I did not have a receipt I could only receive a $20 credit (item is worth $69.99). I was then told that if it was purchased from my registry that I could look this up but I was not registered for a playard.

I talked to the guest relations people and they said they had no control of the items stocked and actually said they had been told by corporate that the makeup had to be displayed on an endcap. Because Target is a family store AND the display was very prominent, I emailed customer service with my objection. The reply was less than satisfying. The said they were sorry I was offended, but that they have guests with diverse tastes and interests and they felt they needed to have items like that. Tonight was the third time I have had the same problem with this particular Target store. It seems that either all employees there have been trained to over-charge or its scanner/computer has been programmed to do so ever so often.
Tonight, I bought 2 of one item and was charged for 3. A similar thing happened the other two times. When I caught it and came back to the customer service counter, I asked if it could be reported to management so it would not happen to me the fourth time. The lady there said they knew about it.
I have lost a lot of time checking my receipts and having to drive back to this store, to have the matter manually corrected. More importantly, I have lost faith, trust, and respect for this Target store.

I thought that was rude, so I talked to an assistant manager. He said "Well, that's our policy and there's nothing we can do about it. She's right, go to a different target." I had a receipt, and it was purchased the day before.

I was told that because there is no receipt the merchandize cannot be returned at all, although they have it available at the store for the same price, furthermore, Target claims to have an exception of the return rule that under $20 they will issue a gift card, so if I were to agree to take $20 for the merchandise, they would return it.
There is no specific statement in Target's return and exchange policy about gift returns/exchanges, nor there is anything in writing about the exception policy which seems completely out of place from any other return policy in mass merchandizing.

While Target was prompt in responding to my complaint there was basically nothing they were going to do for me other then issue me a $10.00 credit to use. The responses were canned and you could tell they were just trying to get rid of me and were done listening to me complain.
Since this inferior product took me one hour and thirty minutes to put together and back apart I found it insulting. When we entered, we were greeted kindly and got a few compliments from employees and customers on how well-behaved our little dog was.
There was one customer who was shocked that a dog was being allowed in the building. We ignored some of his comments and left him to attend to his children.
We got our drinks and I was curious to see if a DVD I wanted was available, but before we could even leave the Starbucks area, that customer was walking towards us with an employee (not a manager) in tow.
The employee said that we had to leave and that it was the second dog they've ever had in the store. We complied despite there being NO sign on the entrance stating that dogs were not allowed in the store.

I work as a compensation manager for a large corporation in an inbound sales call center. To reward people for meeting quotas we often give away Target Gift cards. I have a large budget to work with and often purchase thousands of dollars worth of gift cards for our employees.
Recently our center decided to purchase Sony Play Stations for our break room so that employees could enjoy some down-time on breaks and lunches. We purchased 4 play stations, 3 of which have turned out to be defective. When I went to exchange one of the defective play stations I realized that I did not have a receipt, but wasn't worried because I had made the purchase with a corporate AMEX card. I went to the customer service desk and immediately the customer service associate got on the phone to call Sony.
The representative was verifying the serial number on the play station. After he hung up the phone he proceeded to tell me that the serial number on my unit had never been activated. I explained that I had purchased several units from various stores and that I had also had to exchange 2 of them previously for being defective. He said that as far as Target was concerned my playstation was basically stolen. He also stated that the receipt he found under my credit card was not valid because it did not match the serial number on the unit I was returning.
At this point the security guard comes over and proceeded to ask me about the situation. I had to re-explain the entire situation to her only to hear her accuse me of stealing the play station and trying to return it. These people I was dealing with were robots. They were not listening to me, nor did they care that they were accusing a completely innocent customer of a horrendous act. Luckily I have located all of my receipts and will be writing a very stern letter to the Target Board of Directors. My wife wanted to return a small handfull of low dollar baby items (clothes, blankets, towels) that she received as a gift from a baby shower. For these items we did not have a receipt or gift receipt. In total I would guess the items were valued at less than $60.
The customer service rep was a bit on the shady side when it came to revealing that they will only allow 2 items per ID per year. The tone in her voice suggested that she had randomly pulled the 2 items out of the air and was very unprofessional. My wife was unhappy with this as we had more than 2 items but on top of this they said her ID was blocked and couldn't be used. They also could not explain to her why that was.
Now we stated from the beginning we were not looking for cash back, nor store credit but rather just wanted to exchange the unwanted items. We respect return policies but feel that there should be room for exceptions and over such a small dollar amount and our willingness to keep the business in the store (on top of suggesting that we would be more than happy to pay for any additional cost for upgrading any of the items). We felt this would be a win/win/win situation for all involved and we would remain happy and loyal customer of target.
Instead we were met with refusal to budge. We politely asked for a store supervisor who equally refused to change from her pre-programmed return statement. Oddly though she gave me the 800 number to their customer resolution without my asking and suggested if I complain to them then maybe their policy would change. I can't believe that everyone at the store level is so impotent when it comes to being able to make spot decisions to save a customer experience in their stores.

I said she is 12, and has no need for a photo id for any reason at that age.
The rep. told me that since she was not old enough for a state id or license that I should aply for a PASSPORT photo id for this return. Yes, you read right! A PASSSPORT!! I was utterly amazed at that suggestion! I decided to call the store which she purchased the game originally while on vacation, and spoke to that store manager. On 9/3/2006, my daughter and I went to our Target store and asked to exchange it for the same item since my daughter loved it. When the cashier scanned my driver's license she told me I was on a no return status and since I did not have a gift receipt there was nothing they could do for us.
She called their corporate number and they confirmed that we could not even exchange this defective product. She called a manager who said the same thing.
I asked her to run my debit card to see how many thousands of dollars I spend at Target each year- since they do keep track of every single item I purchase. The cashier agreed the policy is absurd.

My 12 year old daughter bought a video game on the 19th of August, 2006, which turned out to be defective. We took it back today, the 22nd of Aug. (only 4 days later). She paid cash for the game and only wanted to exchange it for the same game. We were told without a receipt of some kind, for her to do an exact exchange, she would have to give them a form of photo id. She is 12 years old and has no reason to even have a photo id.
They told me that they could use mine but the numbers would be stored in their computer system. I told them that we had been the victims of identity fraud, so I did NOT want any personal numbers stored in the Target computer system. So they refused to exchange her defective game.
I understand their policy of 2 receiptless exchanges per year, however this ID policy is completely ridiculous. This is discriminatory, since not every consumer has a photo id. And I should not have my personal property (i.e. driver's license numbers, etc) stored in some company's data base just to be tracked.
So $30 plus tax was wasted and my daughter had to learn a hard lesson.

Several months ago, I bought a small Brinks safe for my valuables (papers and such). The door did not close properly, so I tried to return it, get credit and by a new higher priced one. One of the service people told me that I could not return it for credit because the item was no longer carried in stock. He was ver abrupt and did not seem to care about my problem. This is a poor attitude and made me feel as if I was doing something wrong. If I ever have an occasion to shop at Target in the future, I will think very carefully about it.

I have been shopping at my local Super Target store since it opened. I would say on average I spend $600- $800 a month.
Today I went to return two items that were gifts, purchased two days prior, and was told I could not return them. The reason? I had returned 2 items earlier in the year without the receipt. I tried to explain that they were from the shower, and people do not always give you the gift receipts. I told them I was not looking for money just store credit (less than $20).
They refused. I was amazed that they were willing to lose a customer that spends at least $6,000 a year over a $20 store credit, but they did.

I am very disappointed with Target. My 13-year old son went to Target and brought a steering wheel controller for PS2 at 9:10am, paid with cash and did not receive a receipt. That same day before lunch he took it back. The store told him he needed his receipt. He told them how much money he gave the woman, the amount of change, and that he did not receive a receipt.
The store found the sale on the computer, saw that it was cash and that it was only a few hours before. They still would not refund the money because he did not have the receipt. The store told him that there is a number on the bottom of the receipt that they need in order to refund his money.
My son will only be able to return the controller to the electrics department, he will have to buy one item costing more then the $62.99 the cost of the controller, and only a person who has a driver license will be able to do that on his behalf.
He is a hard worker who cuts grass to earn his own money. Target knows that they sold the kid the controller, and he paid in cash, I do not understand the problem.

I purchased two toddler's outfits for my niece. Both outfits had tags, but for some reason one of them would not scan. Since both outfits were the same except for their colors, the cashier chose to solve the scanning problem by scaning the other outfit twice. This made sense to me at the time, but I found out the hard way that I should not have let him do it that way.
My niece already had an outfit identical to the one I purchased, so I attempted to return this outfit, with the receipt. Of course the receipt did not match the item and I explained at the return desk that the cashier had rung up the other outfit twice and this is probably what was causing the discrepancy. I was told that without the receipt I could only do an exchange - and only at the sale price that this item ultimately dropped to on clearance - which was much less than what I'd paid.

I don't have storage for the steak knives so I went in to exchange the 3 pieces for 1 set that includes everything; the price was even the exact same. I don't have a receipt. I was told I cannot return more than 2 items in 1 year without a receipt and that for every item I exchange, I have to buy another item from the same dept. with cost equal to or more than what I brought back. That makes no sense whatsoever! If I wanted three separate items I wouldn't be taking them back in the first place!
Now I am stuck with something I do not want and cannot use because of their asinine new policies. I don't see how this is fair treatment. Whatever happened to making customers happy? Furthermore, I started looking online afterwards for return policies, and what they post on their site contains NONE of the details described to me in the store and on the 1800 line. Returned with rocker and receipt to find out we needed to go on line to find info finally, someone in their customer service department was helping us but it was too late. It was past our 90 days.
The store manager was rude and told me it was my fault for not opening the packing slip to get the return info. Why wasn't I told that I needed to do that the first time I dragged the huge box in or the second time? Corporate is very difficult to get hold of but they finally reviewed my case and were in agreement with the store manager and his rude response. These 4 outfits all have tags on them.I figured I could exchange them for different toddler outfits....WRONG....without a receipt, you can only return 2 items a year a Target! Even though these outfits have tags on them and are full priced items still hanging on the racks. I said what am I suppose to do with the other 2 outfits...she told me that I could either use someone else's ID to return them, ask the person for the receipt or give them to another 2 old I knew as a gift.
So nice...if I want two different outfits I have to solicit the person who gave them to her, who I barely know (and hey, this might be the cool thing to do in France, but not in the States)....or screw someone else out of their 2 chances to return something with out a receipt or re-gift it! As much money as I spend there...which they could easily see through my credit card since this is how they track my purchases...I'm not shopping there again. I returned home and about a month later I decided I did not like one of the suits I purchased for myself and the one I purchased for my baby was way to small even though it was marked 12 months. I went to the customer service desk and told the associate that I would like to exchange the two items.
She asked if I had the receipt to which I replied that I did not, however all the tags and protective liners were on and in place. The associate asked for my drivers license which I gave her and she began the return. She then stated that she could only return the childs bathing suit because their policy is 2 returns within a 365 day period. I was shocked! I have spent a lot of money in that store, just recently over $200.00 in one visit. I am a single mother of three and I work hard for my money. I am so disturbed by Targets exchange policy!! Since Christmas my family has had two exchanges to make, and I think that the policy stating that you "must exchange for an item in the same department that the returned item came from", is ridiculous!! As long as you exchange for the same dollar amount or more, what difference does it make?!?
Secondly, my daughter-in-law went in to exchange a toy item (a duplicate gift from Christmas for our grandson), in which the value was $20.00. She could not find anything that he needed in that price range, so she bought a child's picnic table, which was $30.00 more that the return price. Afterwards, another relative gave my grandson a child's picnic table, much like the one she bought. She took the one she purchased at Target back, along with the receipt which showed that there was a $20.00 exchange item and $30.00 payment in cash, but she was told that she must now buy something "from the toy department" in the amount of $50.00 OR MORE, and that Target will not even refund the $30.00 that she paid IN CASH!! If you do not have a receipt you can return the item, for an exchange in the same department one item that price or more. We are also able to look things up on credit cards, debit cards, checks, gift cards as well as using serial numbers.
And as for gift registries, those can be used to return items! However, you have a limit of 3 returns like the drivers license. And if you can't return something don't take it out on the cashier. It's not their fault and they do all that they can to help you.

It is extremely disappointing and editorially poor reporting to jump on Target before finding out from them their reasons for not providing space for SA kettle dinging.
I had just read a Co-op America member's letter on the SA's policy of decriminating (sic) against homosexual people in its hiring practices. In addition, the SA has encouraged the federal government to exempt religious charities from laws barring discrimination against gays and lesbians. It objects to the granting of domestic partnership benefits to unmarried couples. I've also read that SA "plans to forfeit multi-million dollar contracts in NYC as the city recently passed a law requiring contractors to extend benefits to domestic partners." Perhaps Target's decision related to this issue and taking a stand on behalf of civil rights and anti-discrimination. You should have investigated and given your readers a balanced message and not a personal crusade.
Moreover, you state that Walmart had "bad PR hits" this year. That's the way they see it -- PR -- but its bad policies by the big guy on top, one that many communities have tried to keep from bulldozing its way in. How do you like, for instance, their practice of buying insurance policies on its workers, and then making itself the beneficiary?
Ironically, Walmart is in there with the greedy corporations and groups you jump on with each newsletter. And through its foundation, it gives millions to right-wing causes, such as anti-gay/lesbian organizations.
So, in a PR move, they (supposedly) will give a million bucks to SA, take that off their taxes, use the PR to lure customers away from Target, earn much more than the million bucks, and come out ahead -- with your help -- as they continue, in ever bigger ways, their unsavory practices and forcing themselves on communities that don't want the negative impacts and practices of the corporation and its "superstores."

It is as simple as that - they won't ask their customers to be harassed by whatever cause YOU think is worthy. Did your website even bother to contact Target to see what their side of the story is? Did you research to see what philanthropic activities Target participates in?
When was the last time you partook in a philanthropic activity - besides throwing some "spare change" in a bucket?
Walmart just plays a PR game for their own greed, while Target made a stand for the consumer - hmmm - doesn't that sound funny? Target did something for the CONSUMER yet "consumeraffairs" lambasts them for that? Pretty sad if you ask me.
ConsumerAffairs.com damaged Target for taking a stand for the CONSUMER - hard to tell how much that damage is, but depending on the reach of your newsletter it could be substantial.

I love Target! I live only 3 blocks from our store. I buy many things there including gifts and prescriptions. I was devastated to see on television that Target will no longer allow the Salvation Army to solicit funds in front of its stores for the needy at Christmastime. Is this true? Rules I understand but this is a little extreme! There is the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. Christmas should be about the spirit.

Your recent decision to ban the Salvation Army from your stores is anti-Christmas tradition. Two things I do during the Christmas season -- #1 shop at Target, #2 give to the Salvation Army. Since your reason for banning the Army is to not discriminate against other groups, I will not shop at your stores, so as not to discriminate against your competitors.

My family has shopped at Target since day one making many purchases over the years. At this time however I can guarantee you that I won't step foot in a Target store again. The reason is your pathetic decision to not let the Salvation Army collect during the Holiday season. I am not a member of any church. My decision is based on your lack of compassion and humanity and your sickness of greed and selfishness. P.S. I will do my best to spread the word to everyone I know!

Dear Target, Please remove my name and address from your future mailings. Your removal of the Salvation Army Bell Ringers from the front of your stores is extremely sad and particularly unnecessary. This is the time of year we should be thinking about everyone - even the poor who can't afford to shop at your stores.

Over the past few years I have made many purchases at Target for myself and also for gifts for baby showers, wedding and bridal showers. I have also made purchases for clothing for grandchildren and numerous other purchases. I am writing this today to let you know that I WILL NOT shop Target anymore because of the Salvation Army thing. All my friends are disturbed about this and many people I know that shopped today (the day after Thanksgiving) went elsewhere to buy their Christmas.
It is a shame that a man is so selfish that he can give himself such a bonus and not care about the people the Salvation Army helps.

We are writing to let you know that we will not be shopping at Target Stores although we have shopped there plenty. We were sorry to hear of your decision to terminate Salvation Army contributions being at your stores this Christmas season. We have always put something in for them after each shopping trip out. It is one way of being able to help others. We have been told other stores have made an exception for them although they do not allow any other organizations at their stores. We would ask that you re-consider this decision and allow them to be at your Target Stores as well. We like Target for the quality and the prices but are sorry that you felt the need to make this decision to provide a platform to help those in need especially over the Holiday.

I am extremely upset with your company as a whole and at your heartlessness during the holiday season. I recently read an article that you will not allow the Salvation Army to take donations in front of your store at Christmas. I have you know that my husband and I are frequent shoppers in your store and so is our extended family. We enjoy the store, the selection, and the price. But now I have to wonder just how ethical of a company are you. I see all kinds of advertisements with Tiger Woods asking people for ideas of how to help others ... well, apparently that is total crap! If you wanted to help somebody, you would allow the Salvation Army to collect donations in front of your store. They are a non-profit organization that helps millions of poor people every year!

We visited the Target in Lewisville, TX. While in the meat department we were shocked at how many packages of brownish/gray meat were still left on the shelves to be sold. They had a $2/off sticker on them, but the meat was disgusting. When the lady in the meat department heard our gasps, she quickly came over and very rudely stepped in front of me and grabbed all the meat. We talked with the weekend store manager. Never received and explanation just a "We're sorry about that!"

He then raised his voice and said that he wants his merchandise back. I asked him what merchandise he was talking about, because everything I have I have a receipt for. He then stated we can do this the easy way or the hard way. I asked him what he was talking about -- he then said that he was following us around the whole time we were shopping, and that he saw me steal not 1 but 2 rings.
I told him he was mistaken and that I put the ring on the counter next to the register that I checked out at. And that the ring on my finger is mine. I took it off so he could see that it was not new, that it had scratches on it. He then got closer to me and asked, "Are you calling me a liar?"
I said no but what I am saying is that you are mistaken. I then asked him to please please go check the register counter that where you will find the ring still in the box. He would not go look, he just kept yelling at me and my poor 5-year-old son was sitting on the ground in the office crying. He then said, "If you don't give me back my merchandise I'm calling the cops and you will go to jail."
My son in screaming, "Please please don't take my Mommy to jail. Please."
He looked at my son and said, "Your mommy needs to give me back what she stole or I will call the cops and they will take her to jail." I begged him to please go look on the register counter. I opened up my purse for the 5th or 6th time and begged him to check my purse. At that time a female employee walked in and I asked her to please check my purse and I lifted up my shirt to show to them that I didn't have any pockets to hide anything in.
By then I'm in tears because he would not go check and my son is so upset. Finally the other security employee went to go check. By then the other security guy came back in and said it was there. He then told me to just admit to him that I was planning to steal the rings. And if I admitted to him that I was he would let us go.
So I said to him OK I was planning on them and also said in the same breath but sir that's not what happened. He stated that it's his choice because once we stepped behind his door that we were in his custody. So as he raised his voice again he said "Just admit it" And you can go. I then told him once again OK I was planning on stealing them but once again you are mistaken sir. Because I was not trying to steal the ring it just was stuck on my finger. And this other ring belongs to me.
He then stated, "OK well you have to understand where I'm coming from." He said "OK, you are free to leave."
He never apologized to my 5-year-old son or my friend. He just said that we need to understand where hes coming from. I told him that no I don't because his whole approach is WRONG!! Especially when he's not even sure of what happened. He just assumed!
My son is now afraid that his Mommy is going to go to jail just like the bad man said. He had a real hard time sleeping and ever since this happened he will not sleep in his own bed. He thinks that he is going to wake up and Mommy is going to be gone to jail just like the bad man said. What a way to start off his first day of first grade.
No one has to go through this. A consumer detained by store security should immediately and in no uncertain terms demand that the police be called and should refuse to make any additional statement of any kind. You do not have to volunteer any information, submit to any kind of search or prove your innocence in any way. You should, of course, cooperate with police officers who arrive on the scene but you should assert your innocence and refuse to answer questions without your attorney being present. If the store does not call police, you are free to go. If you are restrained in any way by store personnel, you should immediately consult an attorney about filing false arrest, assault and abduction charges against the store and the individuals in its employ.

I have been trying to purchase the Garden Paradise Dining chairs (set of 2 chairs) for 3 weeks. I have traveled to 6 different Target stores around Baltimore, MD and have been on the phone more than 6 hours. There is no central system whereby the stores can tell me when chairs will be arriving. I bought the remainder of the set (spent over $300) and now cannot get the chairs to complete the set.
I am frustrated, angry and fed up with Target at this time and either want the chairs or want to return the remainder to the furniture (I have since gotten rid of the receipts and pulled the tags off because I had no idea how difficult it would be to complete the set.) By the way, Target is aware that is it advertised in the stores as a set, right?

I purchased a CamCorder. The credit machines would not accept 3 of my Visa cards. The clerk stated they were too worn out and the machine could not read the numbers. Other stores have no problems with my cards. I wrote a check for part of the merchandise and the manager of the department stated my check was not acceptable because of my signature. I have Js in my signature that went below the line for signature on my check.
I was madder than hell because I waited over 45 minutes for help and could not use my cards.

Back in December 2002, we took our daughter to the Target Portrait Studio for Birthday/Christmas pictures. One of the pictures she took was with Clifford and she LOVES Clifford. When we saw the samples, that was one of the pictures we ordered. When the pictures came back, the picture had Clifford cut off so we picked another picture (the person at the time told me we couldn't switch pictures but she would LET me since there was something wrong with the picture).
In early February 2004, I went back to see if they could try to redo it just in case whoever processed the picture cut it off by mistake and I was told I would have something by February 22nd. It's now March 8th and I've left two messages at the Target store with no answer. It seems whenever I call Target, it's not THEIR responsibility because this area is a separate contractor but my reasoning is that since they are IN the Target Store, I expect the same level of service from them as I do from Target.
It's more of a sentimental issue - we can't go back to the day my daughter turned 2 and if I would have seen that the picture was cut off in the preview (the picture was fine in the preview), we could have redone it then.

I am very disappointed with Target's so called company policies. I have wanted to purchase a good mixer for years and on Jan. 22 I went to our Target store in Watertown where I live and found the exact one I wanted. It was going to be my birthday the next day so I planned to come out on Saturday and buy the mixer. It was a Hamilton Beach mixer for $129.00. When I got there on Saturday, it was on clearance and of course there weren't any left.
I went to the customer service department and had them check to see if they had any more, which they didn't. I asked them to check out other stores and maybe have one sent to me or the Watertown store. I would give them my credit card number so it would be paid for and they could either ship it to the store or me. They said they would contact other stores, which they did and found one in Aberdeen.
When the Watertown store called me back she said that they found one in Aberdeen and would hold it for me til the store closed tonight. I asked if they would take a check or credit card and they would not. I had to pick it up in person, no payment allowed over the phone. I told the girl from Watertown that there was no way I was going to get to Aberdeen with the storm predicted here plus it was two hours away. She said thats all she could do.
I called the Aberdeen store and they again said the policy will not allow them to take payment over the phone or accept a check. That policy shocked me so I called other department stores today and found that if they would have had the product they would have accepted the credit card number and sent it on to my local store in Watertown, clearance or not.
I can't believe how Target treats its customers. I did find the same mixer on Target's web site but it wasn't on clearance and I don't have trees that grow money to have it shipped here at full price plus shipping costs.
As far as I am concerned this family will never shop again in any Target stores.

Last Sunday in the newspaper a pool was for sale at the price of less than $300. The pool is a round 18 by 18 with a depth of 42 inches. It's suppose to come with a ground cover, filter, and pool cover. I went to the Setauket Store first. A male purchased the pool just as I arrived. There is only room for one pool on the floor and none were in stock. I asked for a raincheck - the reply was no rainchecks on seasonal items! I asked if any would be coming in and the man said possibly.
The same day I went to the Bay Shore Store and found an empty space on the shelf where one pool would fit and the same response was given - none in stock and no rain checks! 2 Pools in all of Suffolk County and Newsday circular saying sale item it is false advertising and a most ruthless deception.
I thought that was the greatest price I ever heard and all the trimmings as well all I needed was water and chemicals for a nice cool summer of lazy days. The consequences is that it caused great discomfort with interacting with their staff knowing I was being fooled. It was not fair that a sale is on and only one pool is available there was no mention of that in the circular.

On January 28, 2003 I placed an order for a toddler bed at www.target.com. Since then, my bed has not shipped and my shipping date has been changed 5 times. When I called to inquire about it, I was told the bed was out of stock and would be shipped soon. When I stated I wanted to cancel my order, I was told the order could not be canceled because it is in the shipping process.
When I told them it has been in the shipping process for over a month, they told me they were sorry but there was nothing they could do for me. The reason I ordered the bed was because my 1-1/2 year old has started climbing out of his crib. I need this bed as soon as possible to avoid any further injuries.
My son has fallen while climbing out of the crib. In one instance he scrapped his nose and in another he has bumped his head.

I purchased a Cosco/Eddie Bauer overhead shield infant seat for my child. On 2-15-00 the left hand side arm broke...I called the Target Store I purchased from and explained I no longer had the receipt.
The person I spoke with said she had one in stock and all I needed to do was switch them out, she would have one at the service desk for me the next day.
When my daughter went to do the exchange she was put though several hours of waiting with a not-quite one-month-old child and had to call me several times because the service lady was rude and disputing my claim.
Finally they exchanged the product but after a wasted morning with a child in tow. She was harrassed and disappointed in the treatment and service she received and frankly so am I.
If I had been in a accident and my child was injured because this car seat did not stand up to normal wear and tear and the store who supports the product can not exchange the product and understand child safety then I do have a problem with keeping them as a place to shop.
Plus a company who manufactures product for children should be closely watched for the child's sake.
