Two weeks ago, I went to my vet to get my 6-year old greyhound’s prescription kidney dog food. He has been on IVD Modified for the past 4 1/2 years as a prophylactic measure following a bout of leptospirosis. In all this time, his kidney values have been normal and have held steady. The vet brought out a bag of Royal Canin Renal-LP modified and told me IVD was no longer available and that this new product was the same. Not having enough of the old food to transition Wrigley properly, I did the best I could. But after 4 days on a mix of the old and new food, he refused to eat the kibble. Thinking he needed a bit more time, I started cooking chicken and rice for him which he'd always devour with relish.

By Monday, 8/1, he wasn't even interested in the cooked food. A trip to the vet got him a shot to quiet his stomach and a blood draw for labs. The next day Wrigley was even more lethargic so back to vet we went. The blood work showed elevated kidney levels of BUN and creatinine so the vet drew a urine sample and found blood and protein in his urine. He was also not concentrating his urine as he should be. Tests were done to rule out bladder infection and another bout of leptospirosis. Today, a week later, he is back at the vet getting fluids as he is in renal failure. Calls to Royal Canin delivered the corporate line, it's a good food, it won't cause kidney failure, etc.

I admit that Wrigley's kidneys may have been damaged by the leptospirosis in the past. But I cannot accept that a dog who was running around the yard and bouncing around the house like a 2 year old puppy on the day before and the day he started the renal LP was not adversely affected by this dog food or something in it. In less than a week’s time, he went from a silly, happy dog to a dog very near death's door. Financially, this has cost me a good chunk of money for tests and treatments to this point in time and I don't know where it will end. Physically, it will cost Wrigley his life and me a very sweet, loving and good friend.

I have 3 cats and have been feeding them Royal Canin since they were about 9 months old. They are now 3 years old. Two of my cats now have hypercalcaemia and all 3 have vitamin D excess. I will never use this so-called "super premium" cat food again. They are under a specialist veterinary care to try and get their hypercalcaemia in check.

These people sold me expired dog food and puppy milk. I called them after receiving the food and told them the product is expired. They said it's fine to use for one more year. Just by trusting them as they are from Royal Canine, I served the food. Just in 8 hours all my puppies fell sick and I lost 2 puppies worth of Rs 50,000 INR by the time I realized that was due to the expired food. It took lot of effort to save the rest of puppies. When I asked them about this their response is, "We have been selling expired food, so far no issues. So we don't bother about this issue.” This is huge irresponsibility towards canine being Royal Canine.

After eating the limited ingredient Rabbit & Potato formula we got from the vet successfully for months, a new bag caused severe diarrhea in both of our dogs. We called the vet, but she has not responded, so we threw it out, and bought a limited ingredient variety from the local pet store. Our younger dog is allergic to chicken and possibly grains, so the limited ingredient diet is necessary. Within 24 hours of stopping the Royal Canin food, the diarrhea has stopped, and both dogs’ stools are back to "normal.” We will no longer be purchasing their products.

Our dog is a young dog and came from a well-respected breeder with many rewards from West ministers and has eaten only Royal Canin for Shih Tzu all his life. He had never had any health issues and was never sick. We scheduled an appointment with the vet for a routine checkup. We had no reason to be concerned because he didn't act sick in any way. He ate well and drank well and his stool was normal as it had been and he urinated as much and as regular as he had always done. Once at the vet, they normally do several things as a complete checkup. After doing a blood test, they say he is in renal failure and has to have a transfusion.

After a later urinalysis, they say the kidneys are not condensing the urine and that verifies that the transfusion will only make him feel better for a short while but his prognosis is that he may have six months but no more. He is only 34 months old and has not had any health problems till now. We keep our meds closed up so the cats can't even get to them (we don't drop them and leave any on the floor) and he has not been around any poisons. We don't have a bug problem of any sort. No I don't spray but maybe once or twice during the summer and haven't done that yet. The spray hasn't been purchased either. His exposure to any toxin is not a viable cause because there is none. The cats do not like his food and he can't get to their food because it stays in bowls that stay on tables I built just over knee high from the floor and a Pekingese can't get to the food nor tip the table over.

I have checked the items in our home down to the carpet and the cleaner we use and the paint on the walls and that list goes on and on. We do not and have never used a Swiffer mop or anything like it because its cleaner is toxic to animals. None of the cats are sick in any way. I have checked his family and called about brothers, father, mother and grandparents and there seems to be no history of renal failure. Thus this has, by deduction, to be food related. Would you please test this food? I do still have some of what he was eating. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Also the vet did test for flea and tick diseases and that was negative.

I found some foreign pieces in Royal Canin Sensible Choice Chicken and Rice Cat kibble that didn't look like food and my cat died 3 days later. This was early June 2008. I asked my vet if her illness and death was related to the food and he was unsure, so I contacted Royal Canin and sent them a sample for analysis. I am still awaiting lab results, but they will not provide me with any information and are treating this as though the foreign pieces were just other types of cat food that got mixed in. I saved some samples and can assure you that it's not cat food. I'm still devastated by the loss not to mention the money spent on her care during the last 2 weeks of her life. What's making this even worse is Royal Canin's attitude. They're treating this as though they are infallible since the primary recall happened last year. I am devastated.
