My dog is allergic to a lot of ingredients & can only eat the rabbit & potato & the venison & potato. Unfortunately the venison has been unavailable for over 6 months now so I can only give one type of food with absolutely no variety. It might not matter to my dog that she gets the same exact food day in & day out, but it bothers me a lot.

My 15-year-old cat has been eating RC food for years. She just started getting rather severe diarrhea yesterday and this morning she isn't really eating her wet food... which is unusual for her. I can't say for sure that it's the new cans of RC wet food we just bought on Amazon (maybe with this new formula) but it does seem suspicious that this is happening when so many other pets are having the same problem. I'm going to start her on some other food ASAP! Hopefully that will clear things up.

I recently purchased Royal Canin Urinary SO. After feeding this poison to my dog for one week, she became extremely lethargic and lost enthusiasm in her favorite activities. She refused to eat any more food, but would cave when she realized we wouldn't feed her anything else. Her refusal should have been a warning to us, but it wasn't. Along with lethargy, my sweet dog's paws became red and swollen. She was constantly licking them. Red, flaky welts also started breaking out on her back and she developed a pink rash on her belly. I took her off Urinary SO and within no more than 24 hours her symptoms dissipated. Three days later, she is back to her spunky self, her paws have returned to normal and her rash has cleared. I will never use this food again. I am disgusted by this product and I am alarmed thinking about what might have happened if my poor pup was kept on this food regime.

Rescued my Russian Blue mix kitten and the foster parent had told me that she has only been eating dry cat food. On my way home from getting my kitten I stopped by Petco, bought a bag of Royal Canin Kitten Dry Cat Food. Once I got home I place my kitten kennel facing the bathroom door so she could see her litter box, with her food near her kennel. That night I awoke by the sound of her munching on her food. After she ate she went to the litter box and I could hear that her stomach was very soft. The following day she ate less which had me a little worried but I figured it's probably her just having to adjust to her new environment. She would drink plenty of water but only sniff at her food.
When she finally used her litter box I went to check it and I noticed that her stomach was extremely hard which explained why she has been going less (The food is making her constipated). Went back to Petco and got her Instinct Grain Free Kitten Food (Wet food). As soon as I set that in her bowl she was the happiest kitten in the world. She ate in such a way that I feared she might show signs of aggression thinking that this kind of food is a one time deal. I sat next to her while she ate and gently brushed her hair with my hand to see if she would show signs of aggression towards me. Thank God everything was fine. She stayed calm and kept eating. Never buying anything Royal... looking at feeding my kitten homemade meals after doing some extensive research.

I have sent several emails to Royal Canin Mumbai and called them several times regarding the same but didn’t got any response and this is the second time it happened. My very sensitive dog has been on Royal Canin Rabbit dry food for about a year now after discovering she has a severe allergy to just about everything under the Sun. However since August 2017 we noticed the kibble has changed from larger to smaller bites. At the same time my dog has begun a hunger strike and the little bit she does eat she ends up throwing up or having loose stools with. I don't know what has changed but I wish they'd change it. She has very few options for her very sensitive allergies.

ROYAL CANIN SIAMESE CAT FOOD – My 11-1/2 year old Siamese has been eating this since we brought him home at age 12 weeks. Never a problem until this most recent bag. Did something change with the ingredients? Diarrhea, loose stools for two weeks. Vomited three times in less than a week. He began to eat less of this kibble, spitting it out as he was being hand-fed. Been withholding this from him for about seven days now (have been giving him poached chicken breast instead) and the diarrhea/loose stools have disappeared. We mentioned this to our friend that works at the neighborhood pet supply store and she told us straight up that RC had changed their formula/ingredients.

I have 2 Persian cats both from Champion and Grand Champ lines. They are from different breeders. Purchased as kittens. One cat does beautifully on RC Persian, has a beautiful coat and nice healthy teeth. The other was always thin, had thin body and coat. He didn't look healthy. Vet check and found elevation in CO2 but normal parathyroid levels. At age 5 I had both of their teeth cleaned. The thin one lost 8 teeth, the other was fine. I changed from Royal Canin food because he couldn't eat it without teeth. I put him on fancy feast canned food. He loves it, won't eat the Royal Canin at all and for the first time he is gaining weight and fur. It has been 6 weeks and the change is amazing. I can only concluded that he was not digesting the RC food properly. The vet is mystified. I have had many Persians, this is the first problem that was reversed by moving to Costco canned food.

Royal Canin rabbit & potato - Ever since switching my dogs to this diet with the recommendation from my veterinarian my dog's itching had dramatically decreased. We did the food trial for the full 12 weeks but by week 6 there was already a huge improvement in my dog's skin and itch. We previously had her on an over the counter diet of salmon and potato but realized that she had a mild reaction to fish and that over the counter diets have the potential to be cross contaminated during their production or manufacturing processes.
After the 12 week diet trial we "challenged" her diet one ingredient at a time. Sure enough, she is allergic to every protein under the sun... no chicken, beef, fish, egg, lamb, duck etc. It's disappointing but easy to manage once we know what she can and can not have. She only poops 1-2 times a day versus before was 3-4 times a day. She is no longer itchy which is the most important part. We love Royal Canin and their guaranteed products. They also have great customer service which is hard to find these days. I will continue to use RC for future pets even if they are not allergic. They have great formulas even for normal dogs

I have a Dalmatian and she has a sensitive stomach - which means expensive dog food. I ordered Royal Canin Sensitive Digestion and was good for about 6 months. I started noticing strange red swelling bumps on her head one day. I quickly started eliminating everything I could think of that could be causing the problem. No staying at the Puppy Play place, no pool time, etc. I never thought it could be the FOOD. I kept feeding her and after a few more days I thought maybe it is the food. At that same time I found broken pieces of green plastic soft wheels in the dog food bag! I realized she was eating something beyond the food. I slowly weaned her off the food and she slowly started to get better. The bumps left nasty brown marks on her forehead and they are slowly going away. I can only hope that I caught it before anything long term happened. I will NEVER use Royal Canin again. NEVER.

I had a chihuahua for three years and I fed him Royal Canin food since he was a puppy to adult. One day, I noticed he started developing issues with urinating and just feeling VERY sick. I took him to the vet, had some X-rays done and bad news came. My poor Bobby was diagnosed with very very large bladder stones and a severe urinary tract infection. My vet told me that this was 95% from food. Not even surgery would help and I was forced to put him down, there was no option. My dog never had any symptoms and this came as a shock.
I have heard other related stories all caused by ROYAL CANIN. PLEASE DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG THIS FOOD. Read the ingredients, all chemicals. My eyes are now opened! If you wouldn't eat it, don't let your pooch eat it. There are other dog food brands that provide healthier options. This food killed my dog, I now warn everyone about this brand. I am not the first pet owner whose dog went through bladder stones caused by Royal Canin, this brand should be recalled and taken off store shelves! I do not recommend this food to any animal, not even rats.

I cringe when I read negative review about this food, because I honestly think it has saved my little miniature schnauzer's life. She was diagnosed with HGE twice, and she nearly died the second time. Her tummy is so sensitive (so are her feelings), and the couple of times we've switched her food because I bought into the negative reviews, she almost immediately began to exhibit vomiting and bloody diarrhea.
I asked a veterinarian online today what he thinks of the food, and he said he feeds it to his dogs, and that he doesn't pay much attention to hype about this ingredient or that ingredient - if a dog does well on the food, it's fine to feed it. He went on to say that Royal Canin is a perfectly fine food and the company maintains very excellent quality control. So, while I respect and sympathize with anyone who has had a negative experience, and, as with anything, it isn't for everyone. Let's not throw out the baby with the bath water. Royal Canin is the food of choice for my much-loved, very picky miniature schnauzer.

My young cat had a kidney problem that resulted in surgery and Royal Canin SOS was recommended. She has been eating this for 10 years and she became so sick last Monday that I had to rush her to the vet the next day. I told them that I thought it was the food since she was vomiting constantly for over an hour. She has always had a tendency to vomit because of her long hair but this was all just undigested food. I have tried to get her off of this horrible food many times but she just stopped eating so I kept feeding and cleaning up her vomit. Finally after a $246 vet bill to tell me she was fine, I said "this is stopping right now".
I took the food away from her and went to a healthy cat food store and talked at length to the woman who works there. I took home a small trial size bag of Orijen Cat and Kitten Dry Food and she ate it right away. I also bought several cans of different brands of canned food and the one she really likes is Wellness Complete Chicken. She has not thrown up any food since I took her off of that Royal Canin Crap. I see there is also a Class Action Suit against these Pet Food RX companies. My cat is so much better and back to being energetic and playful. I told the vet I was not feeding her anymore of that food but he offered not much in the way of advice. Again... Do not feed this crap to your kitties.

Due to blood in urine, I have been feeding my cats Royal Canin Urinary S/O for about 5 or 6 years. They each get 1/3 cup of dry in the morning and evening, and 1/4 can wet in the afternoon. All was well until about March 2017 when one cat was vomiting regularly. Vet did Xrays, bloodwork, etc. and no issues determined. Switched to a Royal Canin "bland" food which the wet worked fine but too much of the dry gave her diarrhea. Slowly mixed bland and S/O to get her back on track and it was fine. Then switched to all S/O and in 1 day she was vomiting again. Other cat seems to have no issues. I'm guessing Royal Canin had a formula change and it is detrimental to some animals. Used to be good, now cat vomits regularly.

My 13 year old Cairn Terrier was on Royal Canin S/O for several months following removal of a large bladder stone. She loved the food and was doing fine until the most recent bag, purchased in February 2017. She turned her nose up at it and when she actually did eat it, she would throw up. After days of her throwing up and becoming more and more lethargic, I changed her diet to a non-prescription food and within 24 hours, she was better and has not thrown up since and is much more alert. In reading other reviews, I can't help but wonder what changed with their food in 2017?

My (male) cat Angel blocked around August 2011 when he was 4 years old, w a struvite plug & had to have surgery to unblock his urethra. He ate Friskies canned food, and friskies indoor dry, and another grocery store indoor formula dry food but I don't remember the brand at the moment. It was a few months after we went on a 10 day vacation to Disney World & had my brother watch both of our cats while we were gone. The vet told us to put him on prescription urinary food for the rest of his life, or else he would die... These were our first pets, so we didn't know any better at the time.
After a few years, I started to notice the commercials about the pet food ingredients, so I was horrified by the Royal Canin ingredients when I realized it. I wanted to get him off the food, but I was terrified and paralyzed by fear that my decision to switch foods could kill my cat. But then I thought, these crap ingredients are going to eventually kill him anyway. Then I found out there is no actual "prescription" in the food! And they charged like $2.25 or so a can, for grain, corn, and barely any protein.
Me and my cat have a very close bond, and we both get separation anxiety and are codependent. Sometimes when I feel like I can't go on, I look at him and know that he needs me and I can't leave him because I love him so much and he needs me. Also he was leaking small drips of pee, sometimes, during his sleep, and had large sized pees. I think that may have been caused from the surgery causing scar tissue because it wasn't a uti, and the vet didn't find the cause besides his urine stream has always been a thin stream.
It took me until Feb 2016 to work up the courage to switch food. I researched so many years, for so many hours I could probably have earned a degree in cat nutrition. I just didn't want to mess up and cause him any harm. I found some good info on: The Conscious Cat website & Truth about Pet Food website I also recently watched the documentary "Pet Fooled" on demand, which I would recommend. I tried raw food w my cats, but the girl cat wouldn't touch it, and Angel eats so slow that I was concerned about bacteria. He seems to get his appetite back and he eats dry food really fast though lol.
I stopped free feeding dry food and only give him enough dry food to cover the bottom of his bowl when we go to bed at night. They get canned food 2 times a day but I have to shred freeze dried chicken on top of his because he doesn't like wet food as much. And if he doesn't eat it all, I put plastic on it and put it in the fridge for later so I don't waste any. The best foods that I could find when I researched, were canned: Wellness Core, (NO FISH!) and dry: Orijen, Regional flavor, formerly made in Canada. So I made the switch.
I also got some PH test strips online and tested his PH. I think it was around 7.5 so I ordered dl-methionine online from a company called V.E.T. Pharmaceuticals because I found out that dl-methionine is what they use in the prescription food.I got a mortar & pestle at Bed Bath & Beyond and crush two 200 mg pills on his wet food twice a day. He is 14 lbs. His urine PH got down to normal with that dosage. I also mix water into his wet food because he eats more. Then top w/ the chicken. Recently, I discovered the Orijen changed their formula Because my cats didn't like the food as much. So I found out that orijen built a new factory in Kentucky just for Americans, how nice of them... And now the ingredients for American cats are cheaper than what the Canadian cats get.
Also both my cats started gagging and almost threw up a few weeks ago at the same time after feeding the Wellness core. Then Angel had diarrhea for 3 days, so I realized that I had to do this all over again! Yay! So I switched them to Nutro grain free because Wellness dog food was recalled because it had metal in it... and the cat food had around the same expiration dates so I will never feed them wellness again. They had also changed the formula because the texture was completely different, and both cats barely ate it anymore, so I had to find older cans dated before Nov 2019 because that is when it switched.
I noticed that these companies love to change their formulas and not notify anyone, and they never change it for the better. They ALWAYS change it to something cheaper so they can buy a new yacht or whatever these evil demons want to buy at the moment. Or mostly these money hoarding sociopathic narcissists just like to amass money that they will never use for no reason. May they be cursed to suffer the same fate times three that they make people go through so they can feel some empathy for their victims and stop killing people's pets! This country already sucks bad enough, people work at jobs as a corporate slave and have no real hope anymore because there isn't much room for advancement. And now these greedy companies are trying to take out our pets just to make a buck?
I got an ultrasound done on Angel's bladder on Dec 30, 2016 at the vet, and had his urine tested because he was still dribbling urine in his sleep. His urine had blood in it, and he had crystals present in his bladder. So I researched again, and found out that male cats can have anxiety and stress, and it often causes feline idiopathic cystitis around the same age as Angel was. Which basically means there is no uti or other medical cause for him to have urinary issues.
So I got Feliway Plug in pheromone diffusers that relax cats, and I also found ** which is made for idiopathic cystitis. But it is only sold in the U.K. and they are hesitant to ship it because customs can destroy it upon entry because it isn't approved to be sold in the U.S. Once again, America can't get things that actually help because we aren't allowed to be healthy in this country. Because companies would lose all their profits if Americans, and now their pets, were allowed to be healthy. So they have to keep us sick and not allow us to have things that are highly recommended in other countries.
So I stocked up on the Orijen made in Canada and I saw they have a new cat food "coming soon" called Tundra for cats that will be shipped in limited quantities from Canada. And I found an amazing wet food called Hound & Gatos online at Amazon so I have to order it because stores don't carry it. It is meat, and vitamins and minerals, and nothing else! So it is actually better than the Wellness, because there was carrageenan and some fruits and vegetables in the wellness if I remember correctly.
There is no good wet food in any of the pet stores. They all have something in them that I didn't like. There is always an ingredient that doesn't need to be in there in every single cat food. Unnecessary ingredients include but are not limited to, carrageenan, montremite clay, potatoes, rice, corn, sweet potatoes, peas, all vegetables, all fruits, by products, and any ingredients sourced from China. Basically they only need to put the freaking MEAT in the freaking can, w the necessary vitamins and minerals to meet a cat's nutritional daily requirements, and then STOP! Do not add anything else, EVER! Do not change the formula when you get popular and start making money because you let the greed take over you. Those customers mainly will not come back.
The person responsible for making the formula change decision should be made to research any new ingredients safety first, and then clearly mark the packages stating what has changed so people can make the decision for themselves if they want to feed it to their pet. Now they just try to sneak it in there and think the cats won't notice that they are dying from the poison they are eating. Anyway, I got 2 months of the ** from the U.K. and opened one capsule on the wet food two times a day, and he stopped leaking! And his ultrasound and urine test a few weeks ago was clear! No blood, no crystals. Even the vet was surprised that he was healed in a few months and asked what the medicine was called.
I found a liquid medicine available called Joint Purrfection that is avail in the us but it's not as good. ** has 125 mg glucosamine, which helps maintain the bladder lining, 37.5mg l-tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin which has a calming anti anxiety effect, and 10 mg hyaluronic acid one of the main components of the protective GAG layer that lines the bladder. So this builds the bladder lining up because it was being ripped by the crystals and then caused blood in urine and irritation. He also was having some arthritis for a year and now started to jump back on counters again so I know it is working for his joints. I ordered some ** on amazon and eBay but they were expired when I got them. I will have to find a friend in the uk who can help me out with getting non expired meds.
Also I have noticed a lot of counterfeit items on amazon especially because the reviews seem to start going downhill and people say their usual product isn't the same as normal. Also I have started researching how tap water could be causing these urinary issues. I have hard water and it started smelling like strong chlorine last month and I started giving the cats spring water because I wasn't sure why they got sick and if it was the wellness, orijen, or maybe the water. But Angel likes nasty tap water so he wasn't drinking as much. I found out reverse osmosis and distilled water strips all the minerals out the water, and most filters are not that great either. They say that Spring Water is the best to buy from the store, and not Deer Park which is what I was buying.
A gravity system w compressed carbon, or ceramic filter is best. So I paid $350 last night to order a British Berkey water system w 4 ceramic filters. But there is a cheaper lesser quality version made by the same company called Big Berkey, so I almost got tricked into buying the cheaper version. It is sad when you have to become an expert on so many things just to keep yourself and your family safe. I know waaayyy too much about feline medicine, urinary issues, pet food nutrition, myself and my family's medical issues, because we go to the doctor and they never seem to have a diagnosis for anything... And now water... I never thought I would be forced into learning almost every aspect about water. It took me like 8 hours to find a decent water filtration system because of all the paid, fake, reviews of items online.
It is hard to figure out the truth and find a quality product because of all the misleading reviews and the counterfeit products. But I cured my baby Angel and I am happy that he is going to be ok now. I was so grateful and I wanted to share his story to help other cats who are going thru the same thing. It took me 6 years to figure it out and I felt helpless and responsible to fix it for him because several vets had no idea what to do besides do testing or tell me to feed him prescription. I did test him regularly though to make sure he was responding well. His PH was normal w the dl-methionine but he still had some issues so it is a delicate balance to figure out what each cat needs.
If his urine PH got too low, he could form kidney stones that can only be removed surgically. I would recommend routine blood work, ultrasound, and urine testing w a needle inserted into the bladder to be sure everything is ok to anyone who decides to take their cat off prescription food. I hope this helps other cats out there :). I am now going to start looking into a negative ion dispenser air filtration system to help purify the air in my home because I stumbled upon the subject while researching water.

I own a small female Jack Russell Terrier call Jess. Jess is now 7 years and 5 months old but up until last May and for three years prior to that Jess was experiencing small seizures (petit mal). At first these seizures were few and far between maybe one every couple of months until last May when she had two in a week. This was when we visited the vets as before we could cope with her having just the intermittent one and really didn't want her to have to go through a barrage of tests. We managed to video the seizure and gave this to our vet, who then proceeded to give Jess a blood test to rule out any chemical imbalance that could be causing this; this came back negative. It was then decided that she should have a brain scan to see if this would show up anything.
I rang my insurance company to make sure that I would be covered and was all prepared to go forward with this and to put my sweet little dog through the barrage of tests that I had tried to avoid in the first place, when I had a brain storm and rang the veterinary practice to speak to the receptionist. I asked the receptionist how long Jess had been on a special diet for her teeth (Royal Canin Small Dog Dental). She said she would check and before she could answer me I interrupted and said, "You are going to say about three years aren't you" and she said, "Yes, why?"
At that very moment I knew that all along it had been this food! I looked at the ingredients immediately and the only thing that I could see that may be the culprit was an ingredient called Pentasodium Triphosphate and in a 2kg bag of this dog food there is a mega 3g of it!!! This substance is used as a preservative for dog food and some human foods and is also used in cleaning agents, detergents, soaps, paint and the list goes on!!! I stopped giving Jess this food immediately and what do you know... she has had no seizures since and that is nearly a year now! I cannot believe that a dog food that is sold to you through your veterinary surgery can cause this to happen to your pet, not saying that it would happen to every pet but perhaps my little dog was more hypersensitive than another but I wanted this to be put out there so that others who may be experiencing this with their dog or cat can check it out!!

By morning she was clearly uncomfortable but at least drinking water. I threw away all remaining food including unopened cans so no one else's cat suffers like this from this food. 12 hours later back on her old food she's eating well, drinking water and while still a bit fragile. My male cat has been fed Royal Canin Urinary S/O for somewhere over ten years, to combat urinary crystals, on our vet's recommendation. As far as we had been made aware, he must eat this and nothing else for the rest of his life or risk serious complications. And because we trust our vet we believed that, and that it must be a good food for him if it is a prescription food. He has tolerated it with no problems for a long time, and has certainly had no more crystal formations since eating this.
However, the most recent bag we purchased for him has changed all that. Bought in early February 2017. My poor cat vomits every time he eats from this new bag, and is terribly constipated. I have noticed the kibbles are greasier than usual, with tiny orange beads of fat on them. It is also much stronger smelling and seems to stick to his bowl. I had my suspicions the food was making him vomit but couldn't be sure, until my other cat who has in the past chosen to eat this food regularly without needing it, ate some instead of her own food. She vomited almost immediately. She ate some more another day, vomited again. Having done some research I am now in no doubt this current bag of food is poisoning my cat, and has been the worst choice for him in the long run anyway. Where do I turn now? What do I feed him? I hate myself for having blindly followed advice and for potentially putting my poor cats in grave danger.

Royal Canin Pet Food is a high quality, grain-free cat food that comes in multiple flavors. My cats love it which is of course important. But equally important are the ingredients which are all natural with no fillers. It keeps my cats' coat nice and shiny and the all natural ingredients make it easy on my litter box as well. It is a little more expensive than the average dry food, but it is well worth it.

I bought RC Urinary SO for my dog who went through surgery to remove bladder stones he had developed. My vet recommended I start feeding him food specific to this issue toeinsure he doesn't develop more. After shopping all of the possibilities I chose RC. Within a week of feeding him this specialized food he developed a terrible skin irritation with scabs forming all over his body. He was quite uncomfortable to say the least.
I immediately stopped feeding him this food and looked closely at the ingredients of the food and the first ingredient is corn. It is to my understanding that most dogs are allergic to corn. It was my fault because I assumed a dog food of this quality and price would contain protein as its first ingredient. Don't assume and read labels is what I learned. I shouldn't have to say but dogs are the ancestors of wolves and their diet should be mostly protein and definitely not corn or wheat.

This food is a little pricey and my vet is slow in ordering more but I would not feel comfortable feeding him anything else. Fed RC German Shepherd for 3 years. Upon the 3rd year our GSD's health began deteriorated daily: serious immune system disorders just as any human would from poor nutrition (allergies, dull coat, and excessive mites through deep layers of skin, ears, etc.) You could not touch the poor baby, his skin was in so much pain. We then switched to a raw diet and, emergency visit vet meds to boost healing, cleared most of his issues. He was gaining healthy weight again, pranced happy as a puppy, and enjoyed his new lil sis Pom we added to family. Common knowledge, a weakened immune system derives of a poor gut - bad nutrition.
We were relocating and in the hustle, had to suffice with Dept Store Pedigree during the move, but ordered RC once again about a year later (1- 30 bags 1/18/2015 Order #**), until then, and all seemed basically fine. GSD's food dish is elevated, but he loved his lil sis, our new addition to the fam, and would actually give her a piece of his feed as she hopped and bounced trying to reach bowl. (So cute!) By 3rd day feeding Royal Canin GSD food, we thought an unknown neighbor had to have poisoned our GSD though we could not see how since he never left yard, much less my sight; retiring early, we were home with them all day.
In 5 days, GSD lost 15 of his 135 lbs (he's a powerhouse), would vomit food and/or pure stomach acids continually, suffered continual run of pure liquid diarrhea, and finally nearly collapse. Then I was hit with an OMG ta-da connection: our Pom puppy had started throwing up everywhere along with all the other exact same symptoms. I remembered GSD couldn't resist giving her a kibble or 2 during meals but no more. Piecing this together while racing to emergency vet hospital when GSD finally collapsed, I inquired. They gave no opinion but agreed this was suspicious so no more RC.
I called company, they took info off bag claiming it was not outdated but fresh. I asked about a change in ingredients and they denied. I explained the undeniable evidence, they blew me off. I thought well, ok, I am throwing these 2 bags away but informing chewy.com, our supplier. Fig'd I was crazy, so I ordered 3 new bags RC GSD feed 3/2/2015. GSD was very sick within hours, and on day 2 he sneaked his lil buddy Pom a piece that she ran like crazy to down before I could stop her.
By day 3 I had called the company again and they never even made an effort to release info, refund the feed, or express any form of empathy towards the now undeniable and obvious truth that the food was killing our pets. They also refused to contact our very concerned vet who agreed to go into detail with her diagnosis. Our furbabies survived through heavy doses of various painful injections, and a several oral medication regimes. There were 4 phone calls to Royal Canin, USA altogether and the final person told me that yes, they had changed the diet - to a more stable chicken that extended shelf life of the feed. Me? "click" ... I'm done. Now we only experienced this with their famous GSD feed, but well ... never ever ever will we touch Royal Canin feed again. GSD loves his raw diet, is happy and healthy as a new pup. It's hard to raw feed, but he has saved my life twice and our son's life also - a priceless companion.

When I tried to post my comment I was denied. The site indicated that there was profanity present in my review. That was absolutely untrue. So they managed to keep my 1 star review from being posted about their product. So I have provided a copy of the review I attempted to leave: After a slow two week transition to this food my 13 year old cat suffered his first seizure. The seizure lasted from the time I discovered him suffering at 5:30 am until the emergency vet gave him a sedative - about 20 minutes of pure hell. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes 7 years ago. I was worried the seizure was due to low blood sugar. But the test run by the emergency vet said his blood glucose was in the normal range for a diabetic cat.
After reading reviews on ConsumerAffairs and other sources I am worried that this food was the cause of the seizures. The comments posted about soy based pet food have been scathing. But the diet was recommended by my vet to treat the inflammatory bowel disease my cat was diagnosed as having. There was no improvement in his condition and then came the seizure. I wish I could take him off this food and try something that is grain free. But I chose to say goodbye to him instead. I have no way to know for sure the food triggered the seizure. So I am posting this comment to urge you to think long and hard before making this purchase.

I received my beautiful kitten Sandy, and being naive to required animal nutrition and such, she was on IAMS kitten formula. When I brought her to the vet to check on her brown teeth, they recommended right away to go on Royal Canin Dental. Fine. Your veterinarian tells you to go on a specific diet, you listen. As she got older we always bought dental because that's the diet she was prescribed to be on. Around 6 years old, she started peeing on mine and other's beds in the house. It was unnatural behaviour, so we went for a check up. Of course, like many others with animals on Royal Canin, a bladder stone resulted. She was switched from dental and went on the SO formula. Did not help at all and she wouldn't stop barfing. Anyways, surgery was required to remove the stone. I am just happy that she wasn't more seriously sick and she is better now being off of Royal Canin.
Please if your vet recommends Royal Canin, know that it is just for the money. A true diet for cats, and dogs too, is not animal by-products with a bunch of crappy gluten rice fillers. Working in the pet food industry has opened my eyes and realizing all of the better brands out there. Please do not feed your cats and dogs this brand, it is just a money making company and they do not care for your pet's well-being.

I took my dog (a 18 lb mixed chihuahua/terrier) into the vet earlier this week because I suspected he had tapeworms. The vet said that his discomfort the night before might also be a sign of a gastrointestinal blockage - and said that she wanted to put my dog on a new food immediately (with no switching over) to help with any blockage just in case. So she pulled out Royal Canin Gastrointestinal high energy. My dog normally eats Acana Wild Atlantic and that has made his coat glorious, his backward sneezing gone, etc. His poops by the way were normal all this past week - he only vomited a worm up once and pooped what I believed to be worms.
So I gave him his worm medicine with this new food - seemed to be okay - his poop was solid. Come day 2 though - he has violent diarrhea, grey and explosive projectile, his entire snout was swollen on one side, and he has tufts of hair coming out of his skin. I put him on chicken and rice but the fact he had only 1 can of this and his symptoms were so severe - I'm so upset. DO NOT give your dog this. It is poison. I trusted my vet and now my dog is sicker than he has ever been before.

My 4 year old cat has been diagnosed with urinary tract infection since being a kitten and as such, has to eat food that is supposedly designed to accommodate this challenge. The vet has several brands, but Royal Canin was singled out by the vet as being the better. We balance his diet with a combination of wet and dry products, either 50/50 mix or, as we do now, wet food 4 times a day (3tbsp) with a dry food bin there for him to pick at when he fancies.
Now here's the problem and no end of calls made to Royal Canin has a fix for what is in my opinion, a serious problem. The 165g. can of URINARY SO discolours within 2 hours, smells terrible within 6 hours, is rancid within 12 hours, even when placed in the fridge and locked inside a vacuumed container with all the air sucked out by a FoodSaver machine. The response desk at Royal Canin admitted the problem, but offer fixes such as: take out of can and place in glass dish or SS dish to no avail.
The product instructions state that one should cover and refrigerate remaining in can. I have tried this product on 6 different cats and they all turn their nose up after 8 hours storage. My best tomcat won't even approach the dish once he gets a whiff of the stuff when placing on the floor. It cost a second mortgage to buy this crap as only half the can is ever eaten. Any suggestions because it seems that all brands associated with Urinary Tract Diets are the same, yet the regular commercial food from pet stores stays fresher lasts a lot longer than the stuff available only from vets.

This product should have a LARGE skull and crossbones on it. I lost my cat to this horrible concoction they refer to as food. First of all cats are carnivores, they are NOT and should NOT be fed a cow's diet, meaning corn and corn gluten should NEVER be used in their food (especially when corn is one of the highest allergies in cats). My cat was mega healthy, he got a blockage that was corrected and the vet prescribed this nutrition-less nightmare to my cat and he was dead in a month. And just in case some "vet tech" comes on to tell me there's a number of reasons my cat could've been ill (where generally that could be correct), it isn't in this case.
I was a vet tech and I know (apparently) more than my present vet, because as a vet they should KNOW what they are prescribing. Apparently the profits outweigh the quality care. This food is WAY overpriced to boot. Purina urinary formula is almost the exact same formulation, so for those hell bent on killing your cat you can do it cheaper. Where my experience has been with their urinary formula, when you read other reviews it seems to be a common thread throughout that this brand is overpriced garbage. Buy at your (and your animals) risk. A side note: I have 2 other cats who also started vomiting on this food. Once pulled off the vomiting has stopped.

When I popped it open, it was COMPLETELY covered in disgusting mold! I was horrified. Other cans in the case were dented too.
Contacted Royal Canin, and the company was totally nonchalant about it. They did NOTHING to remedy the situation. I gave them all the pertinent info re: case, batch number, etc. They didn't even offer to replace the case, which I spent $75 bucks on, at $3 per can!!! Unreal. Oh, and my cat started puking the week I found the moldy can. Coincidence? Perhaps, but still very disconcerting. We had one cat who had a urinary blockage and the vet suggested we start feeding him Royal Canin S/O wet and dry. We were told that it would be fine for both cats. The first case of wet food was fine but the second had a different consistency, almost as if they changed their processing. After being on the food for just over a month, our second cat became extremely ill, constipated and throwing up. We took him back to the vet and both attending vets inquired to any recent changes in diet, acknowledging that such a change could be the cause of his potentially deadly issue. He was so backed up that sedation was required to help clear him out. Needless to say the poor thing has never really recovered.
Follow-up research of Royal Canin Urinary SO has found that severe, debilitating constipation, such as what affected our cat, is a common issue in both dogs and cats. Reading all the other consumer complaints, I find it irresponsible for any vet to recommend RC food. My vet has sent RC my complaint, my invoice and photos of the bag of food we still have (not using of course). I have been feeding my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Royal Canin dog food, supposedly engineered specifically for this breed of dog, for nearly a year now. He has gained weight to the point that he is now a fat dog. I had looked for the ingredients on the bag before, but dropped the ball, not realizing that the reason he was gaining weight was directly related to the food he was eating. I cut out all treats, thinking that was the problem; I limited his intake of food; and, finally, I had to look online to find the ingredients of the food itself (I did not find this information on the bag). What I realized was this: the manufacturers engineer their food for Cavaliers so dogs will have a shiny coat and so their propensity for suffering from heart problems will be addressed - supposedly - and that's the only thing these people have to say about their product.
I researched on several occasions what the best foods would be for my dog, only to be confused until I found an article that seemed to be a clear explanation. According to this article, the ingredients in the Royal Canin product I was feeding my dog were the absolute WORST ingredients that could be fed a dog. Just yesterday I bought a product that seems to be best suited for my dog - Merrick's No Grain Healthy Recipe Dry Dog Food.
There are children who live near me who love playing with Max. Just the day-before-yesterday one little boy said this to me: "The last time I saw Max he was little; now he's fat. How did he get that way?" That was it. No more Royal Canin for this dog. And when I went to the store where I bought the new food, the clerk told me that she was surprised how Royal Canin could charge such exorbitant prices for their product (Royal Canin costs about 2 1/2 times as much as high-quality dog foods), and get by with it. In any case, this has been my experience with this brand of dog food, which I consider a ripoff.

River's system - stomach, intestines, etc was completely backed up - the fluid/feces/stuff was absolutely "putrid". River's urine tested positive for E.coli.
The vet felt the cats had ingested something that caused the emergency. They are indoor-only, we drink the same water they do. The vet said the most likely source was the Royal Canin food. Despite that, we didn't think there was anything amiss since it is still a RC product, so we fed it to our dog anyway.
Our dog started to have diarrhea and vomiting after eating the new food, which we found worrying and decided to check whether he has been eating anything else besides the RC food that may be causing the diarrhea and vomiting, which we confirmed to be negative. We also checked to ensure that he has not had anything else other than water as well. Quite simply, we have no other reasons for this occurrence other than the new food. The pack was shown to be manufactured in the EU and we have decided today to stop feeding our dog the new RC food and replace with another brand, which we've still not decided, to see if the problem persists. The following series of numbers were written at the bottom of the bag 11/03/17 0349 FR01 FR59-517-001 (16071011RCC).

Our 9 year old mixed breed had bladder stones removed. The vet said she needed to be on special food and we started her on Royal Canin SO at his suggestion. Because she had been through a lot and I didn't want to make an immediate change and we have other dogs I offered the RC as well as the other food and let all three dogs choose what they wanted.
Our puppy started to eat the SO and developed loose stools. A few days passed and I made sure that only the older dog ate the SO and only the SO. I kept the puppy from the SO. Our other dog never had any interest in the SO. About two days after restricting our older dog to SO only, she developed very loose, mucus and blood filled stools. A day later she was eliminating almost completely blood. I removed all of the Royal Canin from all the dogs. Now, two days later her stools are still a little loose but there's no blood.
Also I was rubbing her with my fingers outside to loosen up her fur and let the breeze blow it away when I noticed a sore on the back of her neck that looked like her skin had split. There was a scab filled with hair that came off. We have since found another spot. This is a dog who has always been nearly constipated her whole life. So the loose stools are a real change for her. She has also never had skin problems. Today she seems to feel much better and the puppy's stools are more normal. I don't care how much that bag of food cost me... it's going in the trash.

I have a 10 1/2 year old mini dachshund that has been on Royal Canin Dachshund since he was a puppy! My dog has been the most healthy dachshund I have ever had! We have never had a problem with him. He has never been overweight, had teeth problems or back problems that are common in the dachshund breed. I have recommend this food to so many people over the years. I bought a new bag of his food 2 weeks ago and after 12 days on the food my dog started having numerous watery bowel movements and vomited twice large amounts of undigested dog food! After two nights in a row of being woke up every hour to take my dog potty, I thought he must be sick from eating something in the yard. I stopped all food for 24 hours, stopped water for 6 hours, then started water in very small amounts every 2 hours to give his stomach and intestines and chance to settle down! His diarrhea and vomiting stopped!
After 24 hours I gave him small amounts of boiled chicken and white rice and did this for 2 days! After 3 days of no diarrhea or vomiting I thought he got through the issue and yesterday evening I gave him 1/2 cup of his Royal Canin Dachshund food. Three hours later my dog needed to go outside and his poop was mushy and then watery! He woke me up every hour last night to go watery diarrhea and has gone 4 times already since 8 am this morning! He has an appointment with his vet later today! This morning I wondered if it could be his food since it was a new bag. I started remembering years ago when dogs were dying across the U.S. from dog food that had contaminated products in them from China. I got scared and decided to do an online search on Royal Canin food and found this site. After reading several pages of reviews on here I am just sick to my stomach to think my dog is sick from a food I trusted for over 10 years.
I now have to find another dog food but in the meantime my dog will have boiled chicken and white rice! I am sure I will have to pay for blood work and possibly other tests today to make sure his liver and pancreas are okay! My new, current bag of food gives an expiration date and says it was manufactured in the USA. The UPC code for this bag is 0 3011145161 3. Then there is a code 451610/P451610C. There is also this info on the bag, BBD/MA 09152017 /CAD 15SEP2017 16077006 RCR 09:40 HECHO EN/FABRIQUE AU/MADE in USA.

This food is toxic. I trusted my vet, VCA. My cat had stones in urethra. After 2 years of this food my cat lost weight and started vomiting after eating, again no one could determine what was wrong. I went online, saw the mass complaints, changed his diet to boiled chicken and rice. The vomiting stopped immediately and personality returned. Royal Canin is not only overpriced but it's like the vets get a kickback for prescribing this toxic food. It's crap and should be banned from market. You think you are crazy or lost till you read these reviews. believe me when I say this food will kill your animal. If your animal is having weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea and is on this food, trust your instinct -- it's not you, it's the food. Change the diet, you will confirm what I am saying that no vet will agree with. It's like the drug companies and doctors, it's all about the money.

I don't normally write reviews about businesses or products, but this food has caused so much stress and money in my household. I have a 6 year old cat and decided to get him a buddy - a 3 month old kitten. I thought it was going to be a nightmare to introduce the two, however, they became friends right off the bat. The REAL problem was the food I just had recently bought for the kitten - "Royal Canin Feline Health Nutrition Kitten Food". Soon after having this food he started having bloody diarrhea. 3 days of mucus and blood and diarrhea, I had enough and brought the little guy to the vet.
Vet did all tests possible and drained my wallet -$319. I didn't care because all I wanted was for him to get better. The doctor prescribed meds and gave him a shot to help with the diarrhea, he also said it was probably the food switch from the last owner giving him stomach problems. He told me to get "Royal Canin Royal Gastrointestinal" and switch slowly over the next 10 days. There I go again caring for the well being of my new little buddy and trusting this vet because you know, he's a vet.
Bought this expensive food and did everything I was supposed to, but the diarrhea would not go away. 3 weeks later and now throwing up all over the place along side the loose stool, I was losing hope. I thought my little friend was broken and only money and a vet would be able to fix him. I started doing some research online at 1AM and found out what a garbage Royal Canin was. I started freaking out, tossed all Royal Canin into the garbage as far as I could and was anxious waiting for the morning to go buy some new food. Food with ingredients for cats and cats only. Since the kitten was doing so bad already, I didn't even care to make a slow transition into the new food, I just wanted to stay away from RC as much as possible.
After giving him the new food in the morning, at night he was pooping beautifully. The best poop, I've ever seen from him. I didn't want to get my hopes up, so I waited for the next day...PERFECT POOP!! Royal Canin was destroying the kitten's inside, making me go back to the vet to spend more money, and the vicious cycle continued. I just hope you could look past my grammar and bad punctuation and stay away from this brand.
PS. My older cat ate some of the RC food and became blocked up within a day. I took the food away immediately. They are both now on Nature Verity Instinct and doing amazing! He continued with the same issues and 4 months later, I am going to have to put him to sleep. He can't walk without falling and although he has had many rounds of antidiarrheals, antibiotics, probiotics and steroids nothing has brought him back to the busy, funny cat he was before he started eating this food. Our dog was on Royal Canin Urinary SO dry food for three years for chronic bladder infections and crystals in her bladder. I've discovered that Royal Canin Urinary SO is highly processed, loaded with byproducts and potential allergens (corn...), which is surprising because this food is so expensive. They don't list the ingredients online which makes it difficult to research.
We cautiously switched her to Orijen Six Fish dry food. She has not had any bladder issues with this new food. She is sleeping better, has a good appetite once again and is more alert and energetic. (Her vet also prescribed Methio form powder for her bladder a couple of years ago. We are still giving this Rx to her.)

If negative stars were allowed this food would get a Negative 10! My male cat has crystals in his urine so the associate vet recommended I try a small bag of the dry cat food to balance him out and help prevent him from having this issue. I wasn't sure how he was going to take it so I mixed it with his other food and only gave it to him over two meals. His sister, who never really enjoys her food but eats, kept trying to steal his Royal Canin. I thought it was cute because she's never that interested in food so I let her try some.
After only two meals of this stuff, my male cat became so constipated he needed an enema and supplements to regulate him. My female almost ended up in the hospital with IVs. She stopped eating for four days, had large amounts of blood coating her stool, then two days later had severe bloody diarrhea plus vomiting. I had to put her on 4 medications plus force feed her baby food before she even started to eat again. I placed a call and this food is "under investigation" but the tech sounded pretty defensive, giving the same excuses I see on their Facebook page. After reading the hundreds of complaints on here, if Royal Canin doesn't recall their food I suggest we put together a lawsuit. I have also contacted my local news outlet to suggest an investigative report be done on this company.

My male cat, Angel, 7, is a family member and my second son. I would do anything for him, and pay any amount of money to be able to buy GOOD quality food for him at a STORE! I feel such guilt feeding him this food, every time I put the bowl in front of him, because I know it is not healthy and will shorten his life. How about a large corporation makes a product that PEOPLE WANT! The CEO could make millions more a year, because they need to hoard more money. So how about you stop killing our family and do the right thing? It will make you feel better about what you have done, and maybe God will show you mercy if you repent.
My cat got a blockage due to stress in 2011 when we went on vacation for a week because he missed his family so badly. He had to get a surgical catheter to unblock him, and I was told he had to be on this "prescription" for the rest of his life and eat nothing else or he will die. So I am terrified and want him to have a food with chicken or rabbit as the first ingredient, and have no corn or grain, and no bad ingredients at all, so he can live as long as possible. (More years alive = more money for you.) I have recently found hard black/brown pieces in the wet food, and I am saving it in case anything happens to my baby. He is my best friend, and if this food takes the one I love most away from me, everyone responsible will be cursed by Karma as well as the ones they love most.
I don't know how you people sleep at night, knowing family pets are dying horrible deaths because you are greedy. People want good food, just make it in America and we will pay, and stop sneaking crap in our food to save a couple bucks. People are having to become amateur cat food chefs, which is ridiculous that people have to grind chicken and add vitamins and minerals, and try to make a food that is balanced, when the first company that actually makes what we want will be sitting on a gold mine. Even the high quality foods seem to have issues. The can is tiny and I could literally buy filet mignon to fill that tiny can for over 2 dollars a can. So put really good organic meats that you could feed to your children, and research truthaboutpetfood.com or some site and make sure you only put ingredients that are not listed as dangerous, deadly, cancerous, cause renal failure, horrible painful deaths, etc, etc. Please.

Our 8-year-old Dachshund was put on Royal Canin Urinary, so dry dog food after she had urinary stones removed. She has been fine for 2 years on it and two months ago we noticed vomiting in the mornings and slow progressing weight loss, as well as shaking. Her vomit would be foamy, bilious, and yellow. We took her for some initial blood tests and everything came back normal. She continued to deteriorate and suddenly became very sick one day. I came home from work and she had been sick all over the house and was having trouble breathing. We took her to ER and they did an ultrasound and found a large liver mass which had not been there two years ago. Surgery was recommended and she had 3 liver lobes removed as the surgeon found three liver masses, not just one.
The results came back non-malignant but they were absolutely stumped as to what caused these weird looking liver growths. For a week following her surgery we had her on chicken and rice only. She did not vomit once, although I at the time attributed this to her liver masses having been removed. We then put her back on her old food and alas her vomiting came back. I went to have a second opinion from a vet today and he thinks she has a food allergy. I looked at the ingredients in Royal Canin and the main ingredient is corn!! Yuck! I wish I had read these reviews earlier and not given her that poison. She is getting off this food as of today and will never give it to her again. I am putting her on a grain-free diet. My 17-and-a-half-year-old cat was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in 2014. He's generally been doing well on meds, except for the occasional (but rare) colon flare-up that he experience in early January 2016. During a Saturday visit at that time, the vet suggested trying Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Fiber Response prescription diet for felines (dry), and gave me a sample bag to feed him over the weekend. He liked it. However, by Sunday morning my cat did not look well; he was lethargic and in distress. I called the vet that morning. She advised bringing the cat back early Monday morning, which I did. Six blocks before we got to the door, he started having convulsions. Horrified, I panicked thinking he was choking on something. I gently reached into his mouth and got bitten during his seizure, which lasted a good solid 3 minutes.
The convulsions stopped as we approached the hospital door. One of the other partner vets quickly examined him. My cat was crying and afraid, but gradually calmed down after several minutes. His vitals were fine and his appearance was better. I filled the doc in about our Saturday visit and said the cat had never had a seizure before. I asked if the Royal Canin prescription may have had something to do with it. He replied honestly that he had never heard of such a thing happening; it may well have been a mere coincidence. I left my cat there for the day and headed to work.
I then immediately did some online research on the product which led me right here to ConsumerAffairs. I was absolutely horrified at the similar reviews I read - how dog and cat owners described seizures and severe illness following the use of a Royal Canin prescription diet. How in the world is it that this product is still on the market? Shouldn't the FDA look into this? They report veterinary recalls and updates regularly. I gave the vet who did the post-seizure exam another call Monday afternoon (Jan 11, 2016) as requested and explained these reviews. He was startled and said he would look into this very serious matter right away. Vets everywhere need to be made aware of this warning. PLEASE do not give your pet this prescription diet.

She's forever over-grooming getting massive lumps of fur out so she's very bald on her back end. Every time I tried to stroke her, she was crying out. She must have been in a lot of pain. Her back was rippling all the time plus her tail was forever jerking. I was having real concerns for her. She's been hiding for a few weeks, only coming down to eat and use the litter. She looked so miserable.
Yesterday I was desperate to find out what was causing all these symptoms for her, so I came on here. Reading people's reviews, I had a light bulb moment. It's the RC so I took it all away, stopped feeding it to both my girls so two big bags are going into the bin. I wouldn't want to give it anyone with cats. It might happen to other cats. So went to the supermarket and got some Go-Cat Crunchy and Tender. WOW, what a difference within hours. The poorly one actually came into the living room playing with the cat toys I've got for them. She's not done that for a long time, but I'm feeling so guilty that I thought it was a quality product I was buying for them and it did this to one of them.
It will take a long time to get her coat to a good standard without the scabs. At least, she's stopped over-grooming and chewing herself to pieces. The other cat for months, she will not let me brush her coat. She hates it so much so she'll scratch and spit at me. Her skin must be so sore, it must be the RC. So hopefully, her skin will settle down. She must be in pain when I try to brush or stroke her.as normally. She's such a placid cat.

For starters, let me address one issue. People come on here and read a few negative reviews about a product and immediately assume the product is bad as well as suddenly "relate" it to their issues. Their assumptions are often wrong. I look at sites like this like a hospital. Generally, you find sick people in the hospital and, generally, you only find people with complaints on sites like this. People with favorable comments don't often find a need to comment.
Now, I'm going to address this in relation to Royal Canin Pet Foods. People read a negative review about one product in the company's comprehensive line, and somehow equate that to all products being bad. No such assumptions can be made. Also, since much of Royal Canin's line is prescription dog foods being fed as therapy for existing conditions, if people don't have the outcome they desired, whether justifiably or not, they often blame the food. They already have dogs or cats that have a known chronic medical condition and, if the symptoms don't improve, they suddenly get worse, or the pet develops other symptoms they immediately blame the food. Maybe it's because their dog is aging or has developed another condition unrelated to the first and unrelated to the food.
In our specific experience, we have an eight year old, 130 lb mixed breed female sweetheart of a dog who had a history of urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, and excessive production of struvite and oxalate crystals and stones in her bladder. We started her on Royal Canin Urinary SO five years ago and it has been a godsend. It reduces the level of mineral concentration in her urine to the point where it is almost clear. She hasn't had a crystal or stone issue, or a UTI, since we started her on the Royal Canin. Though she still has an occasional incontinence issue, it is largely controlled with medication and incidents are few and far between.
She loves the food, even I love the smell of it, and our other dogs find it so appealing that they will lick her dish for a taste when she is done. Our experience has been that it's a good product and we have no complaints (other than perhaps price). People are sensitive about their pets, and justifiably so, but anecdotal evidence about problems with a dog food, if not supported by recalls or scientific articles, are pretty well meaningless.

Pricey but my dogs like it. Size bag I want often not available or small pieces versus large. I want to avoid any product with god knows what toxic additives from China that could kill my dogs. My niece is a vet and she recommends Royal Canin and feeds her dogs that brand. I don't want food coloring to make the "vegetables" look bright green or orange or red to make the food look "meaty" to appeal to the owner. I am willing to pay for a quality product that I can rely on. Royal Canin smells appetizing to me and the dogs. I tried Blue Buffalo and found the smell rancid.

After only 2 days yes only 2 days after eating this Garbage my dog began experiencing seizures. They were terrifying moments of head jerking total loss of control and almost paranoid delusions. I am not lying. I took video and showed it to my vet and she cried saying she was so sorry. I don't blame her. We have gone back to the original brand of dog food but changed the protein level and he seems to be doing a lot better. Personally I am fearful to other owners out there that just think the dog is being silly or a bad dog.
My vet has agreed to send off the remaining food to her lab to check for any adverse chemicals or additives. When this comes back I will write another review. If you read this and are thinking of using Royal Canin dog food please don't. I am not here to promote any particular brand but we have found that Blue Buffalo to be the best for OUR dog.

My sister has been feeding this to her cat for a few years because he had been diagnosed with UTI. This food is primarily made of corn, which is not a good food source for our pets, especially cats. That aside, over the last few weeks, her cat has been losing hair and has flaky, dry skin. He has also been vomiting after eating every meal. She brought him to her vet (from whom she buys Royal Canin), and the vet told my sister that the cat must be allergic to chicken, which sent her on another wild goose chase. My sister passed the leftover food on to me to feed 6 of my foster cats. Every cat started vomiting after eating it. Royal Canin makes it profitable for vets to sell, and vets are rarely educated in pet nutrition, so they believe whatever their rep tells them.
I'd like to see all of Royal Canin lines exposed for the poor quality, overpriced food that it is. Compare the ingredients to other, reputable meat-based products like Orijen, which sells for the same amount and first several ingredients are meat (Boneless chicken, chicken meal, chicken liver, whole herring, boneless turkey, turkey meal, turkey liver, whole eggs, boneless walleye, whole salmon, chicken heart, chicken cartilage, herring meal, salmon meal, chicken liver oil, chicken fat). The truth is, if your cat has a UTI issue, the best thing for him is NO DRY FOOD AT ALL. That is the natural way to prevent UTI. Cats in the wild rarely drink water because they get all the hydration they need from eating live prey.

Our cat was put on the Royal Canin Urinary SO diet back in May. He seemed to do ok with the first bag of dry food and cans of wet food. However, our most recent purchase in August made him sick. First of all, he stopped wanting to eat the wet food (the consistency was off). So he was eating mostly dry food and ended up very dehydrated and constipated and was having yellow soft stools when he actually was able to poop. He started developing rashes around his face and sores on his chin. We switched him to Dave's Restricted Diet Magnesium & Phosphorus wet food and he is now totally healthy. Complaint: This latest bag (MAY 31, 2016) of Urinary SO did cause a lot of vomiting and diarrhea initially. Thought it was a non-food issue for the cat. So we've continued feeding it. Still having loose stools. But, have noticed other issues as well; sleeping more and more deeply. The cat is hard to wake up. This pet "food" should be pulled off of all shelves. I was shocked and appalled at all of the negative reports (recent too) of this junk. We've been feeding our cats RC SO both wet and dry food for 10 years! Last month we bought a new bag and our cats' behavior has changed dramatically. Our older cat (who is overweight) is refusing to eat which is very, very out of character for him. He hides all day in our closet and only comes out at night to cuddle in our bed.
I bought Paul Newman's organic wet food temporarily (so they can eat food with real meat vs the byproducts and whatever else they add in the poisonous RC.) My older cat only licks it a bit and then goes off to hide again. He'll be seeing the vet on Monday. I suspected the food was the culprit when my younger cat (8) was vomiting and then peeing on both his food bowl and my older cat's food bowl. It was so obvious that he didn't like the food.
I looked to see if Royal Canin had any recalls online but they don't. I think they should recall their food seeing that there are so many recent negative complaints from pet owners. Animals are getting sick! These companies making crap food should be ashamed of themselves. Vets should pull this crap off of the shelves. I can't believe how much they charge for this junk too.

I first suspected the food was a problem when 24 hrs after I stopped feeding my usually well cat Royal Canin Urinary dry food, he returned to his normal active, hungry, well self after a couple of weeks of vomiting, constipation and general lethargy (very atypical for him). He was only on the Urinary dry food because my other cat had struvite crystal issues some years ago, so they have both been on this diet for at least several years. My well cat was also on Royal Canin Obesity dry food, due to his voracious appetite. My other cat unfortunately died of kidney failure, after increased vomiting, constipation and lethargy also over the same period as my otherwise well cat. Both cats have been indoors cats, no contact with other animals, haven't attended a cattery in recent months, and have had consistent care. For this reason I looked up Royal Canin Urinary food reviews on the Internet, and was alarmed to read too many similar experiences!
My cat who died, had a kidney removed in Dec 2012 due to a large malignant tumour. He is likely to have had a recurrence of his cancer, leading to the other kidney becoming enlarged and this was probably the cause of his death. He had an increased tendency over the last couple of years, toward vomiting, especially in the mornings, so it was less unusual for him to be vomiting in those last couple of weeks, than my well cat. What was unusual was the timing and amount, and it was often clear watery liquid, until he couldn't keep anything down in those last couple of days. I was blaming fur balls for both of my cats being so unwell, because I could not think what else it could be. Regular dosing of cat lax did not help.
The food may or may not have influenced the timing of my cat's death. We will never know. What is compelling is that my otherwise well cat quickly and completely returned to normal when he stopped receiving the Urinary food. He is still eating the Royal Canin Obesity food and some Science Diet products without any issues.
When I contacted the company, the Royal Canin rep said that she was not aware of any complaints! She did take the issue seriously though, and asked me to send her the link to the Consumer Forum on RC Urinary food. She also spoke with my vet and rang me back. She said that they are sending the information to headquarters in France, and thanked me for being in touch. I did stress that I was not looking for something to blame for my cat's death but that I was concerned for other cats, and was not pleased to see that these issues have been going on for some time, without the company doing anything to prevent further illness in pets from their Urinary products.
It would have been a one star rating, but I gave the second star for the good attitude of the local rep. It is gobsmacking though, that she was not aware of the widespread issues experienced by other RC Urinary food users. This implies lack of communication within the company, and lack of follow up from headquarters in France to address the concerns expressed by so many. Our pets are precious, and when we invest in good care by buying expensive, vet endorsed pet food, it is very reasonable to expect that our pets will not be adversely affected by the food and by any changes to the formula used. Not good enough, Royal Canin!

My 18-year old cat did not have a bowel movement for 3 days. On July 3, 2015, I took my cat to my Vet. After a thorough exam, X-rays, enema and then a cleaning out under anesthetic, my cat was sent home with me with a bag of Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dry food. My Vet said this will keep his B.M.s flowing and to stop feeding him the Purina Pro Plan dry food he has been on for 18 years. By the way, all of his vital signs were excellent when she did the blood work up. After two days of feeding him the Royal Canin, my cat began having huge (almost 5" long) bowel movements! I couldn't believe that much could come out of a little body.
They were also spiral in shape, which was very odd. After one week of him eating Royal Canin, my cat had a night of spotting with diarrhea. Then, several days later, he started shedding his fur, which we thought was due to the temperatures getting warmer (Arizona), even though he never goes outside and the house stays at 78 degrees. Then last night, July 18, 2015 we came home and saw that his food bowl was empty but there were tufts of his fur in the bowl! We found him on our bed. He had pulled out a 3" x 3" area of fur on his left side. His fur looked like he had a major dandruff issue and tufts of hair were everywhere. I got on the internet and saw other reviews people had written about problems they had with Royal Canin, so I immediately removed the Royal Canin from his diet.
That night/early next morning, he got me up at 2:00 a.m. to eat and acted like he was starved. I fed him Purina Pro Plan wet food. (I had bought a case of Purina Pro Plan wet food to supplement his diet when his constipation issues began several weeks ago). Then he got me up at 5:00 a.m. to eat again because he was hungry. I gave him more wet food. He slept in my arms later and I noticed his skin was twitching, like when you have a twitch in your eye or your muscle. Then he had another bowel movement and there was a trace of blood on part of it. I have a call into our Vet for an emergency visit tomorrow a.m.
I am fully convinced that my cat is having an allergic reaction to this Royal Canin dry food. I will be informing my Vet that she needs to read all the problems I have found on the Internet about Royal Canin food and recommend that she not prescribe this food to any other animal! What is in this product??? I feel absolutely devastated about what is happening to my 18-year old furry friend! He looks so pathetic and is crying so much!

However, reading the numerous reviews/complaints about RC products, really scares me to death, as my poochie is my pride and joy! I am calling the VET first thing in the morning for him to recommend another low fat GI food besides RC. Thank you for opening my eyes!!

First I want to thank every pet owner who has written. My dog was put on this food for bladder stone treatment. She was doing well until I got her second bag and she became lethargic and she lost her appetite. I since reading the report posted noticed that I have bag BBD/MA 04172016/CAD 17ABR2016 02; 46 HECHO EN/FABRIQUE AU/MADE IN USA. I am very concern, but my Vet bill is so big at this time I am watching her and encouraging her to drink water. I tried to give her favorite soft dog food and she is not interested.

I have a 3 yr old male cat with Struvite stones. I had him on RC Urinary SO regular and then switched to Moderate Calorie. At first no problems, but about 6 months ago he started vomiting irregularly for 3-4 days, either right after eating or some time after or both. Vomit was vivid yellow with mucus. His appetite was seriously reduced. He would also spit out some pieces as if he found them unpalatable (or too hard? as other people on the site have commented). At the time he was mostly outdoors so I was worried about infections/poisoning. My vet did all tests available but found him in great health.
I put him through an antibiotic and anti-vomiting medication course and fed him boiled chicken for 3-4 days. Worried about stones re-blocking him (last time it was serious) I started him on Urinary a few days later. He started eating again, but he was still leaving some pieces. After that incident he would throw up every now and then but not continually nor would he lose his appetite so I attributed that to eating something he shouldn't when outside. Then about 1- 5 month ago he got sick again, vomiting 4-5 times a day, not eating at all for 2 days, vomit yellow to eventually becoming clear - I guess when he had nothing else to throw up.
Again, did all the tests, again in great health. This time I restrained myself (!), no medication, just chicken for a few days and back on Urinary. Then 10 days ago started vomiting again but not much, maybe 1-2 times a day for 2 days. He would eat only a few pieces of dry Urinary and when I tried canned, he would lick the broth and eat a bit without much appetite. But he would eat the food from my other cats. That made me curious since he didn't do that the previous times so I searched online for Urinary + problems. After discussing it with my vet, I switched to Hills C/D, a couple days canned, then combination, now dry. He loves it, munches it away like crazy. No vomiting so far.
My conclusion: I will never buy RC Urinary SO again whether High Dilution, ordinary, Moderate Calorie, dry or canned. I don't know what the problem is, something they added, quality problems, contamination or whatever, but I have to say I don't care. I am in Europe, all the RC food I was buying is made in Europe (the code on the bags is FR, I think it's France). But from what I've been reading on the site, similar problems exist in the US, presumably with RC food made there? I will also stop buying other types of RC cat food just to be safe.

Royal Canin Renal Prescription Dog Food - Product was prescribed by Vet for my dog with CKD, I purchased the palatability pack - rather expensive, but if was going to help my dog, I did not really mind. I would do anything for her no matter what it cost. However, to start off with everything seemed fine, but over a period of about four days, my dog's fur started to fall out, so much so, every time we stroked her you would get a handful of fur. I then realized, that it had only happened since being fed this food. I then decided to revert back to a homemade renal diet and within two days her fur stopped falling and is now thankfully, getting back to normal. Would certainly not recommend.

I did not know the first couple of times that it was the food, but by the third time that she vomited after eating, I immediately took the food away and threw out the very large and expensive bag. I sadly bought two bags and now have to see if I can get a refund for the unopened bag. I have switched her food and she has not vomited since! PLEASE check out this company. I switched to Royal Canin from Blue Buffalo approximately seven months ago. I thought my older dog, who is now nine, had a skin issue his entire life. My veterinarian suggested I try Royal Canin, and my dog's skin issues cleared up within a few weeks. I was so pleased with the results, I switched my other dog, and both of my cats to Royal Canin. I have noticed their stool has less of an odor, and that there is not nearly as much. My pets are more active, my older dog acts like he is three years old again, and their breath is much better. The specific products I use are Royal Canin Maxi Senior, Royal Canin Small Breed, Royal Canin Indoor Cat. I have never been so pleased with a pet food before.

I am not sure if this is due to the Royal Canine food as I am going to the vet tomorrow due to my dog having a rash under her arms and above her ears, and also a bald patch on her belly. Lately I have noticed crusty spots around the red spots and we have given her absolutely nothing except the Royal Canine Hydrolyzed Protein diet. We have kept her on this due to having stomach and diarrhea issues, however after reading other posts and seeing similar problems with hair loss, I am concerned. The previous labeling said hypoallergenic, however they changed to hydrolyzed protein.
I contacted the company and they said that the hydrolyzed protein was the exact same as the hypoallergenic, however we did not have these skin issues earlier on the hypoallergenic. I am very concerned about this because I am spending a fortune of this food and then reading that dogs are having liver and kidney issues on this food and also having rashes and bald spots.

A few years ago I was raising my Rottweiler puppies on Royal Canin - and only Royal Canin. I noticed that when the pups reached about 6 weeks of age they started to shake and battle to walk. My vet at the time told me that it appeared that they were growing too fast and the only food we were feeding was Royal Canin. I took them off Royal Canin immediately and put them on another puppy food and after a week the shaking stopped and they could walk fine. I then discontinued use of Royal Canin until recently I tried it again hoping something in the formula had changed.
Out of my current litter of six there are two large males that are shaking and having difficulty walking again. The one pup is with client and the shaking started after going to his new home at about 9 weeks of age and he is only feeding Royal Canin. The male I kept - also was only on Royal Canin - and shaking. Have taken my boy off Royal Canin and can already see an improvement. There is no other reason why these pups could be shaking besides the food - can anyone offer me an explanation for this please? I am really disappointed by this because Royal Canin gives my pups a nice body weight and they love eating it - but this shaking and inability to walk is very concerning.

Let me start out with saying my 5 year old schnauzer mix has been on Royal Canin so for urinary issues for about 3 years or more. I recently picked up a new bag in March and opened in April. She is now getting these weird blister like rashes. They swell up and don't appear to be painful. They swell up and reduce to nothing in a matter of hours and it's been happening for almost a week now. Has anyone else experienced this? I've limited everything she's getting to just her Royal Canin food so I'm thinking they have changed something. Based on a number of reviews it is making dogs sick as well. Does anyone have any additional information on if they have changed something or if they are experiencing the same as my poor pooch?

I have two Himalayan cats and fed them RC Persian formula for a long time. They loved it and seemed to do well. I was happy about the special shape of the kibble because my one flat faced kitty could eat it much easier than other dry foods. Then suddenly one of them began to vomit on a daily basis, sometimes several times a day. I changed their food (which is no easy task) and the vomiting stopped. I have tried to go back to the RC several times because they did like it so much but the vomiting has happened every time. I also have to say I am VERY unimpressed with the ingredients in this food, especially for the price. Byproducts, corn, etc. Not good quality. I don't think the original version had the by products so it appears something has changed, which might be the whole problem. We won't be back.

We purchased and opened a new bag of RC Urinary SO dry dog food for our Bailey, who has had bladder stones occur and needed them removed surgically twice. This dog has otherwise been healthy and happy and always a good eater. She was fed her 1 cup of food on Saturday evening, but by 4:30 Sunday morning she was vomiting all of it up, and appeared listless or lost. A couple of hours later she was panting, and drooling and felt warmer than usual. She was rushed to the Emergency Animal Hospital with 103.5 temp and spent the night for observation.
Today, Monday, I brought her home and gave her a small portion of the food at 7AM, about 1/3 cup, and she drank some water. Tonight for dinner I gave her about 1/2 cup of the food and more water. After looking for information on the dog food ingredients, I noticed all of these complaints regarding RC possibly changing something in their product, causing pets to become sick. If this is true then I can expect my Bailey to become sick again. Now I am worried!
We do have an appointment with the vet again in the morning for a check up, so I hope everything comes out normally this time. They apparently have facilities in Missouri, Ontario CAN, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The code on the bag is "BBD/MA 03212016/CAD 21Mar2016 17:39 R2 Hecho En/Fabrique AU/Made in USA." I will be watching this very closely, and will report tomorrow's findings.

I bought this food for my cat while I was in the southwest as I had run out of her usual food. She's an older cat and I looked for a lower protein food. This indoor cat food looked just the ticket. After a few weeks I noticed her fur was growing but she was not shedding. Soon I noticed mats forming. I was brushing her but very little fur came out and the mats were hard. I stopped feeding her the food and threw it out. I got some other food and started her on that. I am hoping that after four months after starting the Royal Canin food she will start shedding and the mats with come out. I brush her several times a day and pull out a few mats. She is patient up to a point then she gets testy and I stop. I believe the mats are painful. The company needs to put a warning on the bag of food that it will cause serious matting. Expensive food is not always good food.
Updated on 09/27/2015:
To eliminate the mats I took her to the vet who shaved the mats away. I have since been feeding my cat Kirkland's Cat Maintenance food that she has eaten for more than 10 years on the advice of her vet. I also include a little Fancy Feast dry food she learned to like at a friend's house. She is taking a joint supplement prescribed by the vet as she is 16 years old. Her coat is smooth, shiny and mat free. She a beautiful happy cat. Those mats were causing her pain by pulling on her skin. I repeat: just because a pet food is expensive doesn't mean it's beneficial to your pet. There is some ingredient in the hairball/indoor type cat foods that prevents shedding and causes matting instead.

I was concerned if this was now happening to Royal Canin. I put my dog on a rice diet (something dogs get when they have diarrhea).

When I checked to see if there were any complaints about Royal Canin food I found these complaints and was happy that I checked the internet. When we picked Jack up 2 days later he was lethargic, shaking constantly, and started throwing up violently, and constantly, so we rushed him the Animal Hospital. He spent one night in the hospital and was rehydrated with IV, and medication to prevent additional vomiting (Hospital Bill $1000.00). Later that day upon bringing him home from the hospital Jack again started vomiting and diarrhea, so back to the hospital where he stayed for two days. The wife and I called the kennel and spoke to the owner who suggested the Royal dog food could be the cause as several other dogs became ill (throwing up) during the same short stay as Jack.
After reading the concerns on the Consumer Affairs site regarding Royal dog food and dogs becoming ill after eating it, we are convinced this is the only common denominator the dogs at the kennel had which match the symptoms reported here. Has anyone confirmed the Royal dog food is somehow bad, and if so, whom should we all contact to support, and address this concern?

My vet suggested Royal Canin Hypoallergenic dry food for my cat's scratching, due, it seemed, to food allergies. He has been on it for at least two years and ate it with no problems, though he is still scratching. Starting in March of this year he started to lose weight and lost 1 1/2 lbs over two months. At the same time, he became lethargic and, most unusually, began vomiting every few days, four on average. My vet took an x-ray ($300) but found nothing that could cause this.
Last Sunday, March 29th, my daughter noticed that the kibble was a different shape. I looked at the bag and realized it had changed. I Googled the change and read that other pet owners had experienced similar problems; however, Royal Canin admitted the change, but assured consumers it would not adversely affect the pets. I then contacted my vet who hadn't heard of the changes, but when she did she told me that the change was so minuscule that it couldn't cause problems. I was not reassured, so I changed his food immediately. Six days later my cat is much improved. No vomiting and full of life.

I have used RC boxer formula for my boxer since he was a puppy after trying a few different "high quality" foods, specifically high protein foods. The high protein foods tended to give him bad gas and he didn't seem to like it very much so I was happy when the RC seemed to be the answer to the problems and it was for years. In 2014 our food supplier told us that they would no longer carry the product because of unhealthy changes coming in future ingredients. They explained that the ingredient has been linked to health issues in dogs.
I continued to use the old formula and when the store stopped selling the RC I tried to switch to the brand they suggested and my dog did not seem to like it and began to lose weight, so I was thrilled when I find another store with RC boxer formula. Everything was good until approximately June of 2014 when I began to notice my dog had dry skin and patches of missing hair. I thought it was due to weather changes and stress of moving but it got worse. Eventually he started to look like he had bald dark spots over most of his body and the vet did not have an answer for me.
I decided to take matters into my own hands and began immediately making my own food for him with 4 ingredients: boiled chicken, brown rice, sweet potatoes and chicken broth (from the boiled chicken). It cured him in a matter of a couple weeks. He looks like a 2 year old boxer again. Fit trim just the right amount of fat and glossy healthy fur. No more black skin spots! If you are thinking of using RC... do NOT do it!

My 12 year old Miniature Schnauzer has been on the RC Urinary SO dog food for about three years with no problems. The last bag I had gotten from my vet looked different. The pellets were smaller and very hard. I figured they had changed their formula or something? After every meal about an hour or so later my dog would get really bad vomiting spells. This went on for about a week. We took her off of it and she got better. As soon as she went back on it because this is the food she needed for the problem, it started again. She was very lethargic, vomiting and eventually stopped eating everything.
We took her to the vet and he said she had stones and that was probably why she wasn't eating, but shouldn't cause these symptoms? Her bowels were very runny with mucous? About three days later she was sitting in her bed and let out a horrible cry and started rapid breathing. By the time we got her to the vet, she was dead!!! An absolute nightmare. It just seems awfully strange that an otherwise happy, healthy dog, would go downhill and die a couple of weeks after starting on this new bag of food? In December 2008, my 5 year old domestic shorthair cat Lucas had a urinary blockage and spent several days at the vet recovering. Fortunately he survived and my vet recommended that I start feeding him the Royal Canin Urinary SO to help prevent the issue from happening again. The food was well liked. Lucas continued on the RC Urinary SO for several years with great results. In April 2014, Lucas began vomiting -- typically in the early morning hours and mostly broken down food from his meal the evening prior. At first it was typically every other day to every 2nd day. Within 3 - 4 weeks it progressed to every morning without fail.
Lucas was taken into the vet for an exam and test results came back favorable. The vet placed him on an anti-vomit medicine which helped for about a day and then the vomiting resumed to every morning. Never thinking that it could possibly be the food -- especially after 5.5 years of use, Lucas' condition got progressively worse until he passed away on January 19, 2015. We were devastated that after all that we tried medically, we could not save him.
Four days later, our orange tabby male Jake -- who has been on the same food for 3 years -- began vomiting -- also in the morning and had diarrhea. By the 3rd morning of vomiting, I immediately suspected the food once I saw him paw at the ground around his bowl. I was mortified thinking that it is entirely possible that the food may have contributed to the death of Lucas. I have lost many nights of sleep over this.
Our 8-month old female kitten has been on RC Development Kitten since she was adopted in October 2014. Jake was immediately switched to her food and -- surprise -- the vomiting stopped and he had well formed stools! In one day! I do not think that anyone can convince me that the food is not a problem -- especially since I have just read even more recent posts indicating the same type of pattern.
My hope is that if there is anyone out there using this formula of RC -- Be very aware of all these posts and consider switching as soon as possible before any possible damage. It is hard to conclude a possible cause with only 1 cat, but I have (had) 2 now that have shown similar reactions within the timeframe of many of these similar posts.
RC has declined to test any of the 5 empty bags that I have so they will be sent to an independent lab for testing after a call to the fda to hopefully open a case. I have been a fan of RC in the past, but something has undeniably changed which will be proven. If it is determined that food is a viable source for concern -- rest assured RC and I will be speaking on the matter. Protect these precious animals -- they only have us to keep them safe.

Our cats have used this formula for years without problems. We feed it to our older male cat who gets crystals in his urine sometimes. All of the cats get this food because we leave a bowl out for them with half Blue Buffalo and half of the urinary formula. Like I said, we've been years with no problems. Recently, with our last bag that we bought at the end of January, all of our cats began having problems. They were all vomiting at least once a day, had horrible diarrhea, and their breath smelled terrible. At the same time they were shedding an awful amount of fur and sleeping more than usual. We have 8 cats and all of them had some sort of symptom, like they weren't feeling up to snuff.
We stopped feeding them the RC at that time, and they got better (I also swapped them from a Blue Buffalo formula with barley in it to the wilderness rabbit formula, thinking that they might have developed an intolerance to the grain in the BB.). Well, they went on for a week with the new food. I stopped feeding them the RC and the old BB. Their symptoms improved a lot! They smelled better, didn't have diarrhea, and stopped shedding as badly. It was almost instantaneous. So we thought maybe the barley.
Well not so fast. My mom came home after time away with my grandmother. She started feeding them the RC again because I hadn't been as a test, and she didn't want the crystals to reform with the cat that needed kidney support. Well guess what? Almost immediately, the RC caused the same problems. The cats were vomiting and had smelly diarrhea within a day! Keep in mind that we'd been doing the half and half mix for years with no problems. It couldn't have been the Blue Buffalo because their symptoms improved once the RC went away, and then came back with the RC. The only constant in the equation was the RC supposedly "hypoallergenic" food.
Needless to say, we called our vet, and we will NOT be buying more. At $51 per bag I'm disappointed that the ingredients aren't better. I'm surprised that RC hasn't issued a statement about this because there are so many complaints. Maybe when they stop using soy, and sub par ingredients they can have my money again. Until then, I'm sticking with the Blue Buffalo Wilderness grain free rabbit meat formula. Our cats are doing amazing on it. The difference is night and day. No more terrible smells. Their poop doesn't smell as rancid. It's still poop, but I'd say it's definitely got less bad odor. I will NOT be buying this stuff again. To all of you considering it, go with Blue Buffalo. You'll have less health problems in the long run and less trips to the vet!

We've fed our two dogs’ prescription Royal Canin Hypoallergenic dog food for the last 7 or more years. Last week, one of my dogs had a sudden, very violent vomiting episode coupled with a total loss of appetite (even for straight chicken/rice or ground beef). The severity of the situation was established when she refused treats - she NEVER refuses treats. She was drinking copious amounts of water and had a very unusual peeing accident in the house, which was totally abnormal behavior. And now that I think back about symptoms, they were both more lethargic around the house. The next day, my larger dog of the two, also started vomiting and refusing to eat anything. They did not eat anything for a straight 72-hours :( only coupled with an unquenchable thirst for water.
I normally don't post to these kinds of forums and most certainly feel that I'm not the kind of person that believes everything I read on the internet. However, after reading the most recent posts about other people's experiences with their dogs and commenting about the change in formula for Royal Canin dog food... I felt a moral responsibility to also add our story to the list. My husband noticed different packaging material for the last three shipments we received, so this may have been when the formula changed.
With estimate that we've been feeding our dogs this new formula for 4-5 months now ... we are praying that this has not caused permanent damage to their bodies. For now, the vomiting has stopped and there was no blood in their bile/foam because they stopped eating anything. I'm at a loss for words on how a dog food that we spend so much money on has changed their formula and ended up causing these adverse reactions in our fur babies. And here I thought they were being picky when they left food in their bowls or refused to eat their normal Royal Canin kibble.
If there is anyone else wondering why their dogs are suddenly exhibiting vomiting, lethargy, total loss of appetite for anything including favorite meat/treats, increased loss of hair, crazy demand for water and unquenchable thirst, unexplained instances of peeing in the house (when they normally don't have problems) or just have no desire to eat their food ... it's this.
I'm changing my food today, no questions asked. If there's a class action suit to force Royal Canin to reexamine their formula, accept responsibility, and prevent this from happening to other dogs... please post on this website. I will add my experience and vet bills to the pile. There are no words to explain the betrayal and horror I am feeling at this time. You always hear about these kinds of recalls of food or food-related deaths on the news but you never believe that these kinds of tragedies happen directly to you... especially when you're spending $100 for 25lbs of dog food. :(

One day, I brought home a trial package Royal Canin dry foods, and he went crazy over it. Considering his history of rejecting all "new" foods, it was rather weird. But, I figured that RC foods were healthy as many vets' offices sell them. Within short time, my cat was eating RC foods only, both wet & dry.
Then, my cat started acting differently, like having "spills" outside the litter box. It was not like him at all. After working on potential causes, I took him to the vet. Found out that he had bladder/kidney issues. Suddenly, I realized that the only change in his routine was RC foods. I got rid of all RC foods immediately and switched back to his old brand. His behavior is now back to his normal, but the medical testings are still coming out abnormal. Don't know yet whether he has permanent damages, as we are doing more tests. Whatever RC foods had, I wish I had never brought them home.

I have four fur babies and have all been on Royal Canine Miniature Adult 27 for years. We purchased a new bag of food the latter part of January and since then, 3 of my dogs have been hospitalized with poisoning! Severe vomiting and severe bleeding from the rectum. My 7 year Dachshund was in the hospital for 2 days recovering this past Monday. I didn't know what it could be and my last resort was the food. I was so unsure until I stumbled upon all of these complaints. They need to pull the food immediately!! Pets are at risk!!! I had made my husband pull the food and buy another bag, but after reading this, I will never but that food again!!!

I have tried many, many brands of foods and treats for my 10-year old Yorkie Terrier (Sophie). She gets finicky and will eat one brand for kibble food then get tired of that and so I have found the best results come from the following 3 brands (which have also been verified as very good choices) and so Royal Canin, Wellness Brand, and CORE Brand dry foods and treats seem to make her happy and her digestive track happy. Many of other brands such as Kibbles & Bits, Natural Choice, Alpo have no REAL FOOD value. I have always been advised that dry food is a MUST as the main source in diet for several reasons, a major one is KEEPING THEIR TEETH HEALTHY - dogs who eat only wet food have nothing to keep the tartar and plaque minimal and we include Denta Stix as a daily treat.
OCCASIONALLY, I will serve a little cooked chicken or turkey in with evening meal, but not every day. This keeps things from getting backed up and makes a nice treat. I have found that one of the most important issues with our sweet LITTLE breeds is that they need EXTRA HELP keeping their teeth clean. Even if you have insurance and have a deep cleaning once a year, their teeth need constant care to keep them healthy. I spray teeth daily with a plaque-removing spray, brush as she will permit and give Denta Stix for mini-small size dogs. Also have checked regularly for heart, tape worms.

I heard great reviews for Royal Canine. I bought the brand for my type of cat. I was trying to transition him from kitten food to adult food. I mixed a 1/2 cup of royal canine with his food to transition him slowly. He ate a couple chunks of the royal canine, so I was excited that maybe this was going to go well. Within 12 hours he had stopped eating and drinking water. He was using the litter box with a lot of stool in it, but no urine. I waited two days, took him to the vet, with no real answers from them. They can't find anything wrong. A little bacteria in his urine and, a little dehydrated. Really? I told you he was getting dehydrated.
They gave him a shot of antibiotic and a fluid pack in his back. 24 hours later he is feeling better and finally eating his old food. I took the Royal Canine away, went back to what he was eating and, he is back to normal. I returned the Royal Canine and, will not use or try it again. I feel I almost lost my baby. I'm sticking with my old brand of kitten food but stepping up slowly with next stage of food.

My cats have been eating RC hydrolyzed protein dry cat food for 5+ years as prescribed by their vet. In December 2014, we purchased a new bag through the vet as normal, and while our healthy 8 year old showed no signs of issues (that we know of, she is very shy and hard to catch) the normally social 14 year old broke out in all over hives, had trouble breathing and was rushed to the emergency vet. After a few aye he was scratching to the point of bloody spots all over his body and had no hair left on his legs, stomach and head from scratching and biting it off.
The normally healthy weight boy lost over 3 lbs and looked like a shell of himself. After thousands of dollars of tests, specialists and watching our cat get sicker and sicker, I accidentally ran out of the RC and used a different brand of food for a week. He went from on deaths door to SO MUCH BETTER in just 5 days. It's been 2 weeks of no RC: his hair is growing back, he has gained over an ounce and he is no longer obsessively scratching. After checking websites on a whim, I found this site of others concerned in dangerous changes in their own pets.

I have two 2 year old ragdolls, one has had his share of issues, the other is healthy as a horse. At a very young age I began to only feed them organic grain free food, only wet, no dry as they will not touch dry. The not so healthy one was recently diagnosed with a portasystemic liver shunt and it was recommend I feed him Royal Canin renal. They both loved it immediately, however, the one with problems developed a blockage within 2 hours, so off to the ER. He stayed at his regular vet for the day, they fed him (not Royal Canin) and watched him to make sure he was passing urine. I came home to find the healthy one had thrown up all over the place. He has never done this his entire life, this cat as never been sick! Not even hair balls!!!
I brought the other one home from the vet, he was passing urine fine all day and was great. When he came home he ate a can and a half of the Royal Canin, within in two hours he was in the litter box all night, then he started to cry out, he has never shown pain through all of his issues. Needless to say I rushed to the vet, and he is undergoing surgery right now, I am devastated!! I read these reviews and looked at the can, and see pork by products, like 2nd ingredient!! This food is poison, neither of their bodies would tolerate it! The other cat is fine, as I said he is the extremely healthy, and after the vomiting, he wouldn't touch the food. But please stay away from this stuff!! Unbelievable! Praying my other will be ok.

Our toy poodle has eaten RC since he was a puppy and is now 10 yrs old. In November we bought a new bag of food and he wasn't eating as well as he had. He also started vomiting at least once a day, and continued to worsen until a few weeks ago, he was up all night vomiting and shaking. In the morning, I noticed that his urine looked brown. I got a sample and took it to the vet with him. His urine was full of bilirubin, his blood work was triple the levels that it should be for liver function, and an ultrasound revealed pancreatitis with liver involvement. They weren't even sure he would survive this.
Luckily, I got that urine sample so that they knew what they were dealing with. After 3 nights and 4 days in the animal hospital on IVs and injectable antibiotics, and now 14 days of 2 different oral antibiotics and a liver supplement, as well as a new prescription diet, he is doing really well. Last urine sample showed no bilirubin at all. I wondered if it was the food, and now I know that it probably was. Total bill for all of this over $1800. I'm so glad I took him to the vet and had that sample to point them in the right direction. This food should be recalled, and I checked online for any recalls and only found one from 2007.

We recently decided to purchase Royal Canin "Hairball" because one of our two cats has been having hairball issues, and I did some research and found that this is a medium-rated (not highly-rated) brand. But we're living in Hong Kong now, and this was the only medium-to-high quality hairball food available to us. Well, after only a few days of trying to introduce this food, our cats have been having constant vomiting problems. We were shocked by this! Before, they might have each vomited once or twice a month, which is quite normal for cats. Since introducing this only four days ago, however, we have witnessed them both vomit about 7-8 times in total.
I'm so disappointed. We bought a big bag, thinking we might save money this way. But this is total crap. I'm actually going to throw it in the garbage rather than try to give it away, because I wouldn't want to see any other cat owners subjecting their cats to this kind of cruelty. For shame, Royal Canin! We've been reading on this site how you have recently changed your formula, and we find it shocking that you would put company profits above the health of pets. And if this move drives you into bankruptcy, well...you won't hear us crying.

I've been using Royal Canin for my cat for about 2 years and I didn't encounter any problem so far. The packages mention that the (dry) food is produced in Europe. However, after I read some reviews, I'm worried. I also noticed that in the ingredients there are soy oil and corn. Unfortunately there are also preservatives. Does anyone know if the soy or corn is mutant (genetically modified)? In USA, the genetically modified vegetables are allowed, but not in Europe. I love my cat and I don't want to suffer something. What should I give him to eat? What is really safe and good (quality food)? Thank you in advance.

My dog always was happy to eat her food until recently. I noticed her not as eager to eat as usual. It would take her almost all day to eat the kibble that was in her bowl. Then she refused to eat it all together. Then the vomiting started. Took her to the vet and had blood work done and an xray of her stomach to make sure she had no obstruction.
All test came back fine. I was told to give her boiled chicken and rice for a few days to let her stomach settle down. Well, she couldn't even hold that down and eventually couldn't even keep water in. She became very lethargic and was seriously ill. After many vet visits, tests, and medications she is slowly improving. This has been a month of hell for me and my dog. She is so sick and I am convinced it is her food. I beg of everyone who may feed their pet this brand of food watch their pet closely. I will not give my pet this food again. They need to have a recall and test the food to ensure that no other pets get sick.

Our dog has been on this food for years with no problem. In November 2014, I went into vet to get another bag and our regular brand was no longer there. I asked the office and they said this other Royal Canin bag was the same as our regular food but they had changed the color of the bag. Within a week or so of having our "regular" brand in the new bag, our dog started to experience stomach rumbling, vomiting and diarrhea. She is now at the point where she is eating very little, including beef and chicken - foods she was rarely treated to and ones she passionately devoured in the past. My wife checked for recalls and we stumbled on to these posts which are almost identical to what has happened to our dog.
She has always been in great shape and this came out of left field. We have been to the vet three times and they have done blood work, testing and cannot find anything wrong with her. She is still eating very little and I am now curious as to whether it is her food after reading these posts. My only word of caution is to purchase this food with these tales in mind. We are hoping she will recover shortly but it has been weeks since she has acted healthy.

My cat was diagnosed with an inflamed urinary tract, and the vet recommended that I put her on Royal Canin S/O. Not only is the food incredibly expensive, but when I opened the bag it smelled like corn! Why am I paying $40 for a bag of corn and by-products? The food did help calm her bladder, but made her very lethargic, lazy, and thirsty. I'm fairly certain that all this food does is make her drink more in order to flush out her bladder. I switched her to a diet of high quality canned food with a high moisture content for the same price I was paying for that awful prescription food, and she's doing much better with no side effects. I wish I could get my money back, and I will never be recommending royal canin to any of my customers as I work for a national chain pet store. So after our 4 yr old Pug having Bladder Stones, we were recommended to put her on the RC SO. She ate it, but a Pug will eat just about anything. After a few days on it I could tell she didn't like it but ate it none the less as I was mixing it with some warm water as we always do with any dry food. Several times she had gotten sick from it, which I thought could have been normal due to changing foods, although we have changed foods once before years ago and none of our 3 Pugs ever had the slightest issue with it.
The final straw was when I could actually smell it on her, as in she was burping or getting ready to get sick again and then she was only Pooping once a day and it was not her normal consistency. I could tell that it was dry and clumpy as if she was not getting enough water. In regards to the water, I give them fresh cool water, changed out, bowel cleaned, a minimum of 3 times per day, first thing in the morning, in the afternoon when we get home from work and then again in the evening. She has always had a similar consistency when going, and always went twice a day regardless of the weather.
I've now taken her off of the Royal Canin SO and have her on the Merricks canned food until I can determine the best course of action for my little girl. So, I stopped the food Wed. a.m. and out her on oatmeal and the symptoms went away immediately. I contacted the company and of course they said there is nothing wrong with their food...blah, blah, blah. So, I reported this to my Vet which she said she had heard some rumblings about this...duh! My healthy 12-year old Labrador Retriever has been on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic dog food for several years now and was previously on Hills Science Diet Z/D Low Allergen. She always enjoyed the food until recently, starting in September or October. We brought home a new bag of dry food which she would not eat. We then bought the canned version which she was willing to eat some of.
In the last few months the health of her skin and coat have deteriorated dramatically and she has lost an incredible amount of her fur. She's also had difficulty with BMs and frequent diarrhea since September/October which we assumed were related to her age. She had been reluctant to eat the dry food which she happily enjoyed before for years, but recently the last week, she stopped eating both the dry and wet food altogether and began vomiting once or twice a day. After four days of not eating we took her to the vet as she was becoming lethargic. The vet ran a geriatric blood test and several of her kidney factors were multiple times above where they should be. The vet advised us that he believed her kidneys were failing and there isn't anything he can do.
Since visiting the vet we've tried giving her boiled chicken and rice which she's happily eaten, but unfortunately due to her kidney failure, is now unable to hold the food for more than an hour or two. After reading the hundreds of similar stories on this site with nearly identical results, I'm mortified and beside myself as I never had imagined that the highly overpriced prescription Royal Canin could be the cause. I had only assumed that dog food in this category was as safe or better than the human food I ate myself for the $300 or more a month I was spending on it.
With so many stories just on this site alone, and with symptoms nearly the same in all posts, it's clearly more than coincidence. I still have the bag of dry food and cans and would be very interested in having an independent lab evaluate the food. Clearly this needs to be investigated and pet owners should be compensated for their emotional pain and suffering due to the loss/illness of their beloved pets, and fully reimbursed for their time and expense of caring for their ill pets if the food is found to be the cause. Until further researched by an independent party, I do not plan to purchase any more Royal Canin, nor would I recommend others do so as well.

We took one of our 3 cats to the vet last week for a suspected bladder infection. With the infection confirmed, the vet gave us an antibiotic and had us purchase a small $35 bag of Royal Canin food to "help" with urinary function. We asked if the food would be okay for all 3 of our cats (ages 1.5, 5, & 7). The vet assured us it would be fine for all. After a week of being on the food, all 3 cats have become somewhat lethargic. The youngest began vomiting, and has pooped on the carpet, which has NEVER happened before. He is coughing every few seconds like he's about to vomit and his tummy is tight and making awful noises. He's obviously miserable. The eldest appears to be having stomach pains and we can also hear the noises from his belly. The middle cat, the one with the original infection, is lethargic and not at all his happy, playful self.
None of the cats like the RC food, but they've been eating small amounts. They've also started drinking large amounts of water. We WILL be calling our vet's office to complain about this horrible product which is making all of our cats sick! I stopped on my way home from work to pick up some of the old food and have dumped the RC out of their bowls. However, we saw the same bag without any change still in the stores so kept with it.
Our toy poodle started acting like she wasn't feeling well and turning up her nose at the food and walking away. Her condition had finally returned to normal a couple of days prior to my visit with the Vet but he recommended Royal Canin Gastro dry food and stated the higher fiber content would keep her bowels running smoothly. I expressed my feelings of doubt about Royal Canin foods as they are packed with fillers, preservatives and artificial coloring. I am a firm believer of canned food for cats as they drink little to no water and they need the moisture in their colon and it's proven to keep their kidneys healthier. Plus my cat is fed grain free. I gave in to the vet's insistence and purchased a bag. After 1 month of a gradual increase of food she began to pull her fur out with her teeth on her top hind area and scratching around her neck causing tiny bumps and scabs.
Having to return to the Vet in the 5th week for a vaccination. I discussed a possible food allergy. The Vet said "If it is a food allergy we will never really know which food is causing it." My mouth fell open... Really??? How about halting temporarily the newest change to her diet which was the Royal Canin and see if the problem stops? Instead I was told she has anxiety and recommended and spray pheromone for $106.00. No thank you. I find it truly unethical that Vets become sales people for a pet food company. If they choose to do so then take the responsibility of caring for the pet for free when they become ill from the food they promote. I have stopped the Royal Canin and my cat has stopped scratching and pulling her fur out. What was wrong was obvious. What was upsetting was that the Vet did not step up to the plate.
