Royal Canin Hypoallergenic HP Dry Cat Food - Our Vet recommended to switch our healthy cats from wet food to the RC Hypoallergenic HP Dry Cat Food. Within 3 days the cats started having explosive watery diarrhea. Our vet insisted to continue with the formula. After 10 days both cats stopped eating and would only drink. We immediately switched back to the old food and our cats are immediately better. I do not recommend this product as a safe product for your cat having witnessed a dramatic decline in our cat's health.

My dog has been on Royal Canin Lowfat Gastrointestinal (dry mostly, occasionally wet) for about 4 years now, and we had never had a problem. Our dog took to this food as if he'd been on it all his life, looked forward to eating it, and we were happy to pay the extra cost for such a great food that kept him healthy. We purchase it through his veterinarian. However, in the past year, little by little, things have begun to change. His coat became more dry, he became more itchy, he shed more, and his flares of colitis became more frequent. We chalked it up to him being older and like anyone getting older, he's going to have more health issues. We treated the symptoms that he had with the help of his doctor. The colitis flares and itchiness were much more frequent and much more intense over the past year, though. It was getting to the point where his colitis would flare up, and my family would be puzzled trying to figure out what actually triggered it because it seemed to just randomly flare up recently.
Around Thanksgiving 2014, I opened a new 17.5lb bag of dry RC LF Gastro dog food, and our dog's condition went downhill fast. His coat became more dry, his colitis and gut-noises were worse, and his itchiness was off the charts. Being a dog with a history of pancreatitis, we knew steroids were out of the question. We tried all the safe OTC allergy medicines on him with advice of our vet, and we tried several different shampoos, many different topical treatments, and nothing got better. Our dog's itchiness reached a point where he was like a wild dog! He was doing everything he could to be able to bite himself and scratch himself, and if our hands got in the way, he'd snap at them to get us to move so he could bite himself more. We couldn't leave him, even with an E-collar because he'd still scratch himself, even if he couldn't bite. If he wasn't sleeping from exhaustion, he was itching. He also had a seizure during this time, which we guessed was from the stress he was under.
Our vet finally had to give him a low-dose steroid injection to bring him down from the hyper state he was in. That worked for one day before he woke up with another seizure and the itching came back. The vet gave him another low-dose steroid injection to hold him until she could meet with a dermatologist and come up with a plan for my dog. A treatment plan was developed that contained two options, but both of them would be harmful to my dog's liver and could possibly shorten his life. We agreed we would start that new treatment plan if his itchiness came back once the second shot wore off. The second shot began to wear off about five days after he received it, but we noticed he was grinding his snout into his blankets after every mealtime, so before calling the doctor to put the new treatment plans in place, I decided to try one more thing before doing something that would risk harming his already compromised liver--changing his food. I moved him quickly to his 'safe' food, which we use during bad flares of colitis or pancreatitis. He never has a problem with this mixture, which is equal parts of cooked (and heavily rinsed of all fat) lean ground beef and overcooked mushy rice. I added a little organic 100% pumpkin to his meals as well. Within two days, the itching was easing up. Over the next week, he began to respond to OTC antihistamines again. Then he didn't need those anymore but only needed topical treatments for the occasional itch.
Now we are 9 days into our ground beef/rice/pumpkin test diet (with no royal canin at all being given), and our dog's coat is shiny again, his hair is growing back, he's sleeping through the night, playing in the yard, his eyes are wide and bright, his ears sit up high, he has a bounce in his step, and he needs NO treatment (either oral or topical) for his itchiness, and no e-collar needs to be worn. I can't help but think that something has changed in his Royal Canin food over this past year. If it were a change in my dog, he wouldn't be responding so well to the test diet, I wouldn't think. I feel like my old dog has become a young pup again over the past 9 days. I'm eager to hear if others have experienced something similar. I'm giving 3 stars because this food was always fantastic, and I had no problems with it, but because I'm not sure what is going on with it now, I had to deduct two stars from the 5-star rating I wish I could have given.

I changed my 10-year-old Siamese cat to RC as I believed it was a superior food. She became listless and was vomiting, seemed to have a tender mouth. I did not realize it was the food and took her to the vet and bought another case of RC canned food. I decided to change her food and she immediately perked up. I am angry as I now have purchased expensive food, which I can't use. But at least I have solved the problem before her health deteriorated too far.

I took my cat in to emergency for a bladder infection (was straining like he was blocked) and the Vet gave me a script for Royal Canin Feline S/O. He also sent 2 cans home with me and said my cat should be on that food. I trusted him and thought it was good food based on the outrageous price. I have another cat at home and decided it would be easiest to just feed them both the same kind of food. The canned food made both of them constipated. They didn’t have a BM for over a week. I took one cat in to see if something else was blocking him. The x rays showed nothing. Blood work was fine. Took him in again as it was suggested that he get an enema. That didn’t help either. My Vet told me to feed them more food as I was only giving them can in the morning and a can in the evening. That’s when I started giving them the dry Royal Canin Feline S/O. Then the nightmare began.
Both cats started throwing up for 2-3 days. One of them was laying on the floor with a fever and her whole stomach looked like someone tore all of her skin off. I took her into emergency. They gave her a steroid and antibiotic but wanted me to continue with the food! Are you kidding me? Now my cats won’t eat anything and just lay around lethargic. They won’t drink water either. They are dying right in front of me. My Vet suggested the Hills Science Diet Feline CD. I refused to feed them anything that was sold at the Vets office or had to have a script. I read about all of the recalls and all of the complaints about these foods. Why is it OK to kill our pets and why are the Vets pushing these foods on our poor innocent babies? I also saw the 20/20 show on pet food. I couldn’t return the food because I didn’t have the bag as I dumped it into a container and threw the bag away. I am going to have the food analyzed. Thank you Royal Canin for putting my cats through hell with your poison!

I have a 2 month old Yorkshire and I fed him with RC for puppy. After 1 month, he seems ok. 1 week ago I bought a new RC and he didn't want to eat it and began to scratch his body. First I taught it was a flea, but I didn't found anything yet I found this red spot like pimple all over his body. I went to vet and after checking he said that my puppy positively had a demodex because of the DF I gave. Now I switched with Holistic + for allergic and he gave me a traditional recipe for strengthen my puppy. I'm very disappointed because that dog food quite pricey. And thank God I took him to vet as soon as possible. RC, any comment???

I have been using Royal Canin Low Fat Gastrointestinal food for my Miniature Schnauzers, age 8 and 2-1/2, for about 2 years without issues. I just bought a new bag of food and my youngest Schnauzer appeared to have an allergic reaction, developing redness all over and appeared to be in distress, shortly after eating. Had to rush her to the emergency vet hospital. My oldest Schnauzer began vomiting within a few days of being on the new food. I stopped feeding to allow her to stabilize, but when I started feeding her the Royal Canin food again, she began vomiting once more, even worse than before. At this point, I'm very concerned that there is something wrong with this food. I took both of my Schnauzers off of it and am now contemplating changing to another dog food. I don't know for certain that their sickness and distress was caused by the food, but I'm concerned because the problems started right after opening this new bag.

I just got my cute kitten from the shelter, and they sent me home with Science Diet kitten. My kitty, Luna was doing fine. Then I decided to switch her to Royal Canin after hearing good things about it at work, and that is where my nightmare began. Within weeks, my cat developed diarrhea.. almost constant. She had terrible gas that could clear a room, and her coat was dull and lank. I had transitioned her food slowly, so I was unaware at this time if it was the food that was causing all of this (as she was a new cat to me). My Cat's lymph nodes were grossly swollen as well. After multiple visits to the vet, antibiotics and finally an abdominal ultrasound - my vet thought she could have a food allergy and recommended Royal Canin Hypoallergenic.
At this point I was highly suspect of the food, and told my vet that I was going to try a different brand before going with the Hypoallergenic, as I did not think she had a food allergy. I then switched Luna over to Purina One (a more abrupt switch than before - 3 days instead of 7) and by day three I noticed a 100% change. Her stool was firm, and she was no longer clearing a room with her horrible gas. After a week or so, I noticed her coat was much shinier and softer than it had been. She seemed much more vibrant and healthy than she had ever been on this crappy Royal Canin. We haven't seen one loose stool since then and she has not needed to go on antibiotics since that fiasco. I would never recommend this food to anyone!

I'm a mostly raw feeder after having researched over and over and also from my own background of being a progressive nutritionist and alternative coach. So I got a new baby chihuahua from a breeder who feeds similarly to my kind of thing. The intermediary who brought us together is a commission agent for Royal Canin and insisted that l feed the pup with RC. He also made me believe that l had to at least start with this feed as this is what the pup had been eating so far. Within a day the pup was itching like crazy. I checked for fleas and mites and gave my chi a good wash with sulphate free baby shampoo etc...
My son asked what l was feeding and l said It was Royal Canin but only temporarily until l transitioned to my diet. He smirked and said, "well that's your problem - all the dogs l know that are fed Royal Canin itch like crazy. Get rid of it NOW." I binned it all immediately and got on with my healthy varied diet all made fresh, both cooked and raw. My chi is fine now and growing strong. No more itching. I must say that l do give her kibble as treats when she deserves one. I have chosen Orijen as my preferred brand and we are ok so far. Besides, in case of emergency l need to have her used to a kibble. Since this story l have heard of a lot of ** about Royal Canin and its marketing programs recruiting pet stores and breeders to sell their crap for commission and l'm sure it's not the only brand that does this. Eukanuba is another, but that's another story.....

I am shocked by some of the reviews I have read on this website. In June of this year, my cat developed UTI and was put on SO. He has been on it for a total of four months. I took him in for a checkup and they did some blood work to have his teeth cleaned. The vet called me and informed me that his blood work was all over the map. He is now telling me he may have kidney disease. My cat also didn't want to eat it. I picked up a new case of canned last week. Before that, he was eating it. He never did like the dry and he would walk around crying because he was hungry, but would not eat the dry. He also developed colon issues and would cry when he had to use the box. After a long discussion with my vet, we took him off of the SO and put him back on the food he loves. When I put the food in his bowl, he went over and scarfed it all down. Right now he has extremely low phosphorus levels, almost not even recordable. I have serious doubts about this food and I doubt seriously if I will feed it to him any more.

I have been feeding my 3 year old male cat RC SO Urinary for about a year after a bout of urinary obstruction and a trip to the vet. The food helped a lot until just recently. After opening a new bag, my cat has started showing signs of severe allergy, itching, hives, rash, hair loss. It has only been three days and he has bald patches! I am taking him off of the food for a while to see if that is indeed the cause. I thought it might be a new litter I bought, but I had used it before a few months ago with no problems. I had to use it because the store was out of the exact formula (same brand) that I usually bought.
Anyway, I still replaced the litter with the old faithful formula. No change is seen in my cat. The only recent change to his routine is the new bag of RC SO Urinary cat food. Is there another brand of food with similar properties as RC SO Urinary that I can try? I am not able to afford all the veterinary care as others can on this site, being that I am disabled and on fixed income. I can barely afford this special food. The food did help a lot with his urinary problem. I am afraid that if I stop using urinary care food, he will get another blockage.

In 10 years, many times I brought home new foods for our cat so he's not stuck with same old food. But, he rejected every one of them until Royal Canine (herein RC) was served. I was shocked to see him all but abandoning his regular food for RC - and it was immediately. I even joked that RC had to be laced with something. Then I noticed that our cat was constantly tearing, throwing up often, and became lethargic. The only changes that took place was RC foods. So, I went back to his old brand and took him to a vet. After a checkup, blood & urine tests, the vet suspected possible damages to kidney etc. We are to do ultrasound and more procedures. In the meantime, I noticed that our cat now stopped tearing and does not throw up as often. More procedures will tell us whether there has been any permanent damages, but I am more than convinced that RC was the problem.

My tabby cat like most male cats with UTI, so my vet recommended special food. My cat has gained too much weight and now he needs to be in a diabetic formula thanks to this food full of corn bad for the pets. Why do they make as first ingredient corn? I'm not a vet but I'm smart enough to know that the special diets for pets are not good until they do a better formula. My vet said now they are using low calorie from same brand and same bad formula. At list purina proplan first ingredient is turkey, chicken etc. At this moment he is treated bad infection, no crystals in the lab work but now diabetes is alarming. Very irresponsible that companies are focus in dollars and not concern about well-being of pets.

I have been reading the recent reviews on Royal Canin dog food. I have a chihuahua who has been eating the chihuahua food for 8 years. About a month ago she wasn't so enthusiastic to eat it. About a week ago, I came home to her shaking and yelping when touched. Finally it stopped and she has refused to eat the Royal Canin. I went online this morning to see that others have been having this same kind of problem the last two months. I read the Royal Canin has added fillers to their food. Their food is not cheap. I switched food to Canidae. Royal Canin needs to review what they have added to their food as it is making cats and dogs sick.

Went back and tried it this week again (they had been on it 12 years prior) and within a week they were vomiting and having horrible diarrhea. The vomiting is nonstop --- six or seven times in a row when it stops. The cats did not do this with the other food. The only new thing was the Royal Canin. Something is wrong with the food. I had to take her back to vet 10/10/14 because she was lethargic and not eating the organic human chicken breast canned in water only. X-rays were done and nothing was found to be abnormal. My cat, Bloo, was diagnosed with FLUTD in 2011. He was put on a prescription diet and would only eat Royal Canin Urinary S/O. He's eaten it without issue, both wet and dry, for years now. We got a new kitten and we feed her different food, which he's been interested in, and we've had her since May. But over the last month, month and a half or so, Bloo has been refusing to eat his wet food. He'll eat his dry food (from a very large bag we got last year) but he wouldn't eat his wet. I assumed that it was because he was bored with the flavor and wanted to eat the kitten's wet food instead. But our kitten, who was intrigued by his food before, won't eat his wet food now either. I took the cases we had of his wet food and exchanged them for new ones at PetSmart, thinking we'd gotten a bad batch. But he still won't eat it and she won't either.
I looked up about maybe a formula change that Royal Canin made and found this site with all of these complaints. Bloo has had a few soft and smelly poos but I figured that was because he's been eating more dry food and because he's been trying to eat more of his sister's food. The fact that other people have had issues with this food making their cats sick worries me and I'm not going to feed him the wet food anymore. I talked with my vet and explained that Royal Canin changed their formula and it's making people's pets sick and we're going to try a different brand. What angers me most is that the food was fine. He'd eat it and was healthy and happy. So why did RC have to change whatever they changed and ruin a good thing? What in the world was wrong with it that they felt the need to change it? There are so few foods out for cats with FLUTD that it's ridiculous already, and now out of like four types, that's yet another my cat refuses to eat. Hills he won't eat, now RC, and I think we've tried Purina and Eukanuba before and he wouldn't eat those either but we'll try again.
Just...seriously, RC, WHY? I feel betrayed because I figured that the Rx diet was something I wouldn't have to worry about with Bloo, that I wouldn't have to worry about allergies or anything like that, that I could trust that it would be perfectly fine each time, even though the ingredients list is atrocious and my kitten's food (Merrick) ingredients sound immensely healthier. I am SO pissed that now I have to deal with changing my almost 7 year old cat's diet again, and figuring out what to feed him. And if he won't eat the other foods, then what? An expensive surgery? Now I'm very worried about my cat, and about my wallet quite frankly, and it's because RC decided to do something spectacularly stupid and change their foods.

My cat has been given Royal Canin Maine Coon dry cat food for years. Recently Royal Canin changed the formula and at first we had a difficult time as the cat did not want to eat it. Eventually, he started to consume the food and there were no other problems until last week. We purchased a new bag of food and within one day of eating from this new bag, our cat is extremely ill. I've just read other comments on this site from owners, both dog and cat, that their pets have gotten ill and need emergency treatment, IV's etc., and the only thing different in their routine has been new bags or switching to this food.
My otherwise healthy cat is now so lethargic, he cannot move, will not eat, has vomited several times in the last few days. We're headed to the vet this morning, hoping it's not too late. I've not seen a recall or any other comments from the company that there may be an issue with contamination. I'm hoping other people who have recently purchased this food for their pet will be advised from all the comments here that there does seem to be something very wrong with the food right now.

I started my rat terrier on this food in June of this year at my vet's recommendation, since crystals were found in his urine. I mix canned and dry (moderate calorie urinary SO) and did switch him gradually from his old food. He ate it readily, and had normal formed stools and good health, until this past week. I had just received a new shipment via mail order, of both cans and dry, and started him on the new batch... three days or so later, earlier this week, Spark didn't seem himself, was mildly lethargic, and needed to defecate with extreme urgency after eating. He passed a formed stool with both blood and mucous in it. My vet had me send a stool specimen for parasites, even though routine blood work and stool test in June were completely normal. This current specimen was also negative for parasites... vet said to "keep an eye on him".
That was three days ago, and he has continued to look a little bloated after meals.. Tonight he passed a stool that was semi-formed and coated with slimy mucous and one streak of blood, also with great urgency and it made an ungodly noise as it left his body.... can't even describe it... Reading all of the similar stories here... all after opening a new bag of food, I'm starting to think Royal Canin has a real problem with their food being contaminated!

After 5 days of being on the medication my dog was back to her old self. Two days later she started vomiting again and was completely listless. Took her to the vet and she was given a shot to stop the vomiting, blood work was done, and a litre of fluid was injected into the back of her neck for dehydration. The blood work came back the next day stating that her WBC and RBC were fine, Chloride, Total Protein, Albumin and Globulin were all low, ALT and AST were 3 times higher than the normal high, and Bilirubin (Total) was high.

FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR CATS, PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE FEEDING THIS FOOD TO THEM. And then make your own judgment. We have been feeding our cats this food for a number of years without issue. However, on July 19th, our first cat had to be taken to the emergency clinic. Within a couple of days, our second cat had to be rushed to the vet. Anemic, wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, lethargic, diarrhea, eye discharge, fever and near death's door. After running blood work, urine samples, x-rays, everything appeared normal though you could tell, he was anything but fine. Then the third cat began to show the same symptoms.
Since the third cat is segregated from the others, my thoughts went immediately to the food (the only common factor). So we quickly tried to determine which kind was that was making everyone sick. We give them a combination of Royal Canin Gastro Dry, Hill's Sensitive Stomach Dry, and Hill's Turkey and Giblets Entree. We started pulling up food but by then, we were trying to juggle three sick cats, vet bills mounting up. So we eventually pulled up everything and returned what we could and disposed of all containers and remaining food items.
We notified the Pet Store chain we deal with. And I contacted Hill's to try to report the possibility of a problem with the food. The conversation turned into almost a two-hour interrogation of our lifestyles and the history of our cats. They even wanted access to our vet records which I denied because by that time, it felt more like they were trying to legally cover themselves than cared whether animals would get sick and possibly die. So after that experience, I did not bother to contact Royal Canin as I could not go through the same stress. Though I was told one of the vets notified them. My stress level was already far too high.
Eventually, it went through all 6 cats and the last one had to be submitted to emergency vet care where he was tube feed and on I.V. and could have gone on to liver failure. He currently needs 8 medications a day and is fighting Pancreatitis and still showing signs of anemia, diarrhea, etc. Though much better than he was a week ago, he is still not out of the woods and now he may get worse.
After being constantly discouraged by the 3 different vets that it was the food, though they could not pinpoint what it was, we thought that since they were the professionals, we would trust them. Since we could not get our cats to eat any other dry food, we went and purchase a new bag of Royal Canin Gastro Intestinal Fibre Response Dry Food from a different local source. After feeding the food to 3 of the 6 cats for less than 7 days, the one on all the medications is still not better and now the second cat to originally fall ill is sick once again and is looking worse than the first time. Most likely because the immune system is suppressed from the first time. And I have had no luck in finding any lab that will test the food for me without signing a waiver that I will not release the results.
This nightmare has been going on for three weeks now, I have personally exceeded my maximum stress level, and we now have two cats that we do not know will live or die. No one really knows how to treat them as they do know what caused it. So they are only being treating for their symptoms. I wish I could give you more detailed information than this. But I feel confident in saying that 6 cats is not a coincidence. And the reoccurrence after the reintroduction of the old food makes it a very likely culprit. Wishing you are all lucky enough to never go through this and anyone else who is, our thoughts are with you!

Our chihuahua has been sick for 6 days. 4 vet visits later, no news. He is the worst right after he eats. He shivers, convulses and then becomes really lethargic, but in a lot of pain. He has been on Royal Canin low cal gastro for about 3 years. I have just read that RC has changed the make-up of the product to add more filler. Since we are pretty much at the end of all of the possible diagnostic testing (thank goodness for Trupanion insurance!!), we are going to switch his food and see whether it makes a difference... keep you posted. Given there were so many recent posts about this, I thought that it was important to share our pooch's experience.

He then started acting very strange, bobbing his more, shaking head, falling down. Ran him into the vet thinking maybe low blood sugar. Not... Vet recommended to not feed him the dog food. I started him on healthy food diet I cook and prepare myself. Amazed at the difference in a short period of time. But there is liver and kidney damage. Will never buy dog food again. As far as I'm concerned it’s like giving a dog poison.

Our beagle became violently sick after opening a new bag of Royal Canin. She refused to eat anything after. We took her to the vet and they did a full course of tests. All anti-diarrhea and meds did not work. She could not keep anything down by force feeding. After 2 1/2 months of daily visits to the vet and I.V. treatments she passed away. This food poisoned a healthy dog. I hope this serves as a warning to anyone who uses this food or is considering using it.

My 10 year old Yorkie passed away last week after being sick since opening a new bag of Royal Canin low fat GI food. She had been on this brand/type since Jan. 2014 with really no problems except a slight case of pancreatitis in April 2014 which she recovered from in a few days. The new bag was opened July3/4th and within an hour of eating breakfast, she vomited and throughout the new 2 weeks, had left food in her bowl - very unusual. It was pretty much downhill after that and she passed away on July 23 after suffering a severe stroke/seizure. Never had any issues with seizures.
I have to wonder if the food is the culprit here??? Luckily I still have the bag and plan to talk with my Vet this week to see about having it tested. Will report any findings! I am now looking for a new puppy to fill the awful void that Jasmine has left. Her death was very unexpected and not pleasant in the manner of death. I will NEVER purchase Royal Canin again and I am seriously considering making homemade food for the Yorkie puppy I plan to get.

At first I thought it might be stress (he's been to the vet a lot lately) but then it occurred to me it might be the food. I saw some posts on other websites from people who were having the same issue. I am going to stop giving him this food and switch to another grain free cat food and hopefully the diarrhea will stop.

I also confirmed with a rep locally. It is having a wide variety of negative effects on animals. After 10 years with this brand, I have moved to another brand too after hundreds of dollars in vet bills.

Discovered your site as I was investigating Royal Canin SO in preparation to buying it for our one-year-old short-hair rescued from outside. While on standard foods for cats, he has developed allergies and crystals in his urine, and bloody urine ......no problem with squirrel, chipmunk and mouse while he was still an outdoor boy.
This got my attention, as our 12-year-old Persian's coat and mood have suddenly gone downhill since consuming a bag with the BBD/MA 01052015 10:48 61. She has been eating this formula for years, with no problem. The newer 7lb. bag contains the same ingredients with a date of 05312015 appears to contain the same ingredients. One of the cats...haven't figured out which one, or more, of the three, is also experiencing loose stools.
Have had all three cats tested by the vet...She was very thorough and commented that all three cats had been snacking on the Persian formula, so it was not possible to narrow down the culprit food. The older Persian cat had elevated magnesium and will be tested again for possible kidney issues. While I have no proof that the Royal C. food is an issue, I will consider other alternatives until I have more info. Thanks for providing this forum.

A couple of years ago Royal Canin decided that they didn't want to pay a percentage to distributors any more and moved customer service in-house. It has been an unmitigated disaster for customers. Despite the fact that the customer's information appears on a computer screen IN FRONT OF THE REP it is their policy to force the customer to provide a laundry list of information - account number, address, name, telephone number, etc. with each and every call. Since the reps lack adequate listening skills this often means repeating this information 2-4 times before they will take your order.
Yesterday was the final straw - 4 reps, 4 calls (repeating the information above a total of 10 times) and a supervisor blaming me for their inability to place an order for 2 bags of one type of food. I informed them I would not place another order with them. Their manager made a point to call back and inform my staff that they blocked my account. Really? Because you were wrong? Because they didn't already hear you making mistakes and wasting our time? What an unprofessional organization. No other distributor we do business with conducts themselves in this manner. I understand they are back to negotiating with distributors again. Hope no one picks them up and the veterinary division closes.

I believe that they have changed something in the Royal Canin Urinary SO formula. I have been feeding the Urinary SO dry food to my boy Sparky for at least 5 years. NEVER had a problem and at 17 pounds he obviously enjoyed it. Did I mention Sparky is a cat? At my vet's suggestion I switched him to the low Cal version, his next stool was loose, and he then advanced to diarrhea. I then tried gradually mixing the old and new but the only way it stopped was when I completely eliminated the new (low Cal) food.
I figured it was some filler that they put in the low Cal version that didn't agree with him. He has a problem with crystals in his urinary tract; feeding him the Urinary SO eliminated the problem so I figured I'd give up on a low Cal option and do a better job restricting/measuring his food. All was well until I he started on a new bag of food (same type as always, from the same vet). After several days of diarrhea "gifts" left on my staircase, I took a sample into the vet and was given antibiotics. When that didn't help, they doubled the dose and still no effect.
It took me a while to be suspicious of the food; he'd been on the same thing for so long. I am having a hard time getting him to eat something new. He is stubborn and on his last hunger strike he ended up with a feeding tube. I've spent lots of money on different foods trying to entice him but no luck, and I am left with no choice but to mix the old with new (and yes he will pick through it all for the old stuff first). He is barely eating, but at least eating. A few days ago, he started using his litter box again, and his stools were gradually improving as he got less of the urinary SO. Unfortunately yesterday someone in the house accidentally threw a handful of the old stuff in his bowl and when I came home, there was another "gift" on the staircase carpet. This leaves me no doubt there is a direct connection; something in this food is making him sick.
I strongly feel that there is something in the low Cal version AND something recently added or changed in the regular Urinary SO version that disagrees with my cat. I guess if whatever "it" is causes enough problems the "what and whys" of the product(s) will be properly investigated. I DO KNOW that consistent vomiting or diarrhea can seriously threaten the life of a cat. If this food is creating problems, it is important to let others know. I am not comfortable with how long it took me, too long to connect the dots, and really disappointed in my vet's closed-minded approach to Sparky's symptoms.

My dog has recently had some gastrointestinal issues and her vet prescribed Royal Canin. We have not yet tried it so I can't write from experience - and why I rated it 2 stars out of fairness - but when I saw the ingredient list, I started doing some research to see if this food was well received by others and was quite shocked by all of the comments on this site. So many people have been using RC for years without issues and then suddenly, after starting a new batch of food, have had problems. I continued to look around the internet and found an article on Truth about pet food from May 2013 - ** - that I think is very interesting. RC put out a flyer - ** - saying that they were changing their formula from containing chicken meal to containing chicken by-product meal and explaining why this was not a bad thing. The article went on to explain the definitions of each and essentially, the by-product meal can contain intestines and feces. I have no idea if this is part of the issue but the fact that they changed their formula and the problems started certainly seems suspicious.
Btw, the part I found most uncomfortable from RC flyer is where they say "I guess maybe people associate by-product to inedible parts of an organism, while this is not necessarily the case. Indeed, there are plenty of things that can be considered as by-products. Despite what one might think, they are not all bad." 'Not necessarily the case' and 'not all bad' are not reassuring statements when you are dealing with what we are feeding our pets. It implies that in SOME cases they are in fact inedible parts of the organism and in some cases they ARE bad. I would venture to guess, most pet owners are not up for gambling with what they feed their dogs. We should demand better reassurances and regulations all around.

My 10-year old Australian Shepherd has been on Royal Canin Urinary SO for many years (dry food). He develops stones in his bladder and this food has kept him from forming large stones - he still forms stones but he passes them before they are any trouble. Prior to putting him on this food, he had to have two cystotomies to have large infected stones removed.
Recently, we began feeding him the moderate calorie version. We bought a new bag and when we gave him his food he refused to eat it and left it sitting in the bowl - very unlike my dog. He eventually ate it, but continued to turn his nose up to it each time he was fed. Five days later, he began acting lethargic and refused to eat any of it. He also developed loose stool. When he refused to eat, we took him to the vet to have an exam and blood work done. His blood work came back with low platelets and elevated liver enzymes, which is consistent with salmonella poisoning. We also had an abdominal ultrasound done which showed no tumors or gastrointestinal disease. Since he has been removed from the food, he is eating again and more energetic. He is scheduled to have blood work done again next week to determine if his enzymes have returned to normal.
My dog has absolutely no opportunity to eat anything from the trash or the yard. All findings are consistent with an infection of some sort, yet all results for tick borne illnesses, etc were negative. This is the only food he is given because of his stone issue. Is there a way to have the food tested to determine if it is indeed tainted so it can be recalled before anyone else's pet gets ill? I cannot have his stool tested at this point because he has not had the food since he fasted for the ultrasound. By the way, the ultrasound showed a large 1 cm stone in his bladder that will probably need to be removed surgically at some point unfortunately. I do appreciate that this food has kept him from developing stones for many years.

I had been feeding my two Mini Schnauzers Royal Canin for quite a while. Several weeks ago, both of my dogs came down with a horrible case of diarrhea. I took them to the vet and the vet put them on antibiotics. I also switched to a rice and boiled chicken diet. After a couple of weeks and continued trips to the vet, it was still uncontrollable so I switched to another vet. The vet said their stool did not indicate they needed antibiotics so he put them on a pill called Endosorb for the diarrhea. Meanwhile I agonized over what element in my home could be causing this and changed lawn services in case it was coming from something being put on my lawn. The diarrhea stopped within a couple of days. He said to keep feeding the rice and chicken for another week and gradually add back in the kibble.
The second day (yesterday) of adding Royal Canin for Schnauzers, the diarrhea returned with a vengeance. I returned to the vet and once again he found nothing wrong in their stool so he prescribed another round of Endosorb with the same feeding instructions. Today I decided to Google Royal Canin diarrhea and was shocked to find all of the pet owners who had the same problem with this food. I have two very sick dogs today who will not even get close to their food bowls (rice and chicken only). I am sure they have realized their food is making them sick. I have two sick Rag doll cats from eating Royal Canin Urinary SO dry food. Both are being treated by my veterinarian under emergency conditions. The male is only 18 months old and the female is 10 years old. The male began urinating outside the litter box more than a week ago and cried each time he urinated. Yesterday, the female's face was swollen and she was too sick to walk. Although overweight, she has always been a healthy cat with few trips to the veterinarian except for routine shots. The common element linking the two illnesses is that they both had been eating some RC Urinary SO kibbles I mixed in with the male's normal food to see if it would help with the LB issues.
I had just opened a new bag of SO. I also had just received Susan Thixton's book and a recent e-mail regarding a recent recall of SO regarding melamine. I am convinced that both problems with my cats was caused by the food they were eating. I took the food back to Petsmart immediately and purchased a different brand. I thought maybe it could have been something else, but there is nothing else. Nada. So, after a long weekend of dealing with her poo poo and misery I started feeding her rice and boiled chicken. Well, you know the reason she eats SO is to keep her protein balanced and her kidneys in check.
I am just so disappointed that I cannot trust a company to maintain their quality control from lot to lot of dog food. For crying out loud, this is my baby we are dealing with here! He said the 'S' fights one type of crystal and the 'O' fights the other. I immediately changed him to the can SO formula. Then one night I read the contents on the can and noticed there was nothing special about this food. It's filled with byproducts from chickens and pigs and it even has corn in it. Everything we are told to not feed our cats, especially when they have a UTI or crystals.
Soon after reading the ingredient on the can my cat began throwing up, very violently I might add. He threw up about 6 times that night with just about everything in his tummy coming up. His initial throw up looked as though the food was not digested. He was panting heavy and looked like he was in pain. The next day, he got sick again. However I did notice her stools were very loose. I had to feed her the dry food the seventh day as I ran out of wet can food. She ate it up and that evening I thought she did not look too good. She was walking slow and almost drunk like. I did not even figure it out until the next day when I spent $60.00 on some more dried dog food and wet can dog food at the vets.
I took the PUG with me and asked them while I was there, "Does this dog food make them extra tired as she was walking almost looking exhausted last night?" I was told that it should not but I was also to make sure she drinks plenty of water. Well after paying all that money for the food, we got home and she would not drink water and ran and hid in the next room when she smelled the food that I just recently purchased and put in a bowl. One of our cats was diagnosed with a food allergy and the vet suggested Royal Canin Hypoallergenic PD. We used it for about three years without any problems. About three weeks ago, I gave them food from a new bag and at first I didn't notice a problem until a week later. My two kitties didn't seem as energetic as usual. Then one of them started vomiting and quit eating and drinking water so I rushed him to the vet and he gave him Sub-Q fluids, an antibiotic, steroid injection, B12 injection, something to settle his stomach and ran blood tests. Which was normal except for a slightly low protein level and the vet said that was probably from not eating.
After getting him back home I kept a close eye on his eating and fluids. I noticed he would stare at the food bowl then pick up piece after piece of food and spit it back out like it tasted bad and walk away. We gave them some tuna (okayed by our vet and the ingredients are just tuna and water) and the one that had gotten really sick ate all the tuna and didn't vomit afterwards. I also found a limited ingredient food of a different brand to give him and he quit vomiting.
I called Royal Canin about their food possibly making him sick and was told there is no recall, they haven't changed their formula and if I wasn't satisfied I could exchange for a different bag at the vet's office. She asked for the expiration date and lot number and if there is more than one complaint they would look into it. She said my complaint was the only one for that line of food. Since both cats had done so well on this food for years, I decided to exchange the bag. I thought maybe the other bag just had at little something off since our other cat didn't get as sick. My kitty didn't eat much of it the first four days but on the fifth day he started eating like usual, also playing and seemed well, but the next morning after eating it, he vomited and now he's not eating or drinking again.
I think it might be the Royal Canin making him sick and I'm going to try the other food again and hope he doesn't start scratching from his food allergy. My other cat never got that sick, just slept more and vomited twice in two weeks, but still ate and drank, so maybe some pets do better on it than others. If your pet is sick and you suspect the food, no matter what company, please call the number on the bag and let them know.

We recently bought another bag of the Royal Canin gastro food that our 10 month old Lab has been on for over a month. Within a couple of days of eating it, he was throwing up his food, then refused to eat the kibble from that bag (would smell it and walk away). He would eat another brand of kibble and did not appear to have lost his appetite. There were no other symptoms. We took him to the vet, who did x-rays and found our dog had gas in his stomach, no blockage. We were told to only give him the gastro food (we had been mixing it with a small amount of another brand). We had to put some wet Royal Canin food on top of it for the dog to eat. Once again, he began to throw up.
Back to the vet for another x-ray (looked better this time). We also brought a vomit sample as well as the remaining bag of RC food. Vet did not see/smell anything odd. Nevertheless, we feel there was something wrong with the bag of food and returned it for a refund. The vet have the dog an anti-nausea injection and we bought the RC canned gastro food. We have been feeding him about 3-4 tbsp every few hours for the past couple of days and everything seems to be back to normal. We can't be certain that there was something wrong with the recently purchased bag of RC food, but the reviews on this site make me wonder as some of the stories sound very familiar. My heart goes out to everyone whose dog or cat has become very ill or passed away.

I have been feeding my cat this pet food for years and have had nothing but brilliant results. She is very healthy (according to the vet) and she has very beautiful fur. I have plenty of friends who use this product for their pets and they all have very similar comments. Actually I find this site quite peculiar since I see nothing but bad stuff about the brand I have trusted for almost a decade. Anyways the main reason I'm writing is to find out if this site really is legit and would include comments from anyone. If it does, I would probably be worried and would consult my vet immediately.

What is the FDA website to report this? It didn't come through on the previous post. Going to buy a new brand today. What recourse do we have as consumers if there is really contamination?

I adopted my chihuahua in October and started feeding him Royal Canin Chihuahua food. I bought small bags at Petsmart. It was totally fine. Then I ordered a giant bag at Wag.com because I had a coupon. I started feeding my dog and noticed he began to have diarrhea with blood. I have had other dogs, so I treated him at home and then it didn't go away and he was ** blood so I took him to the emergency vet. They managed to stabilize him and I fed him rice, pumpkin and chicken pureed. Along with his medicine, he got back on track, then I started his dry food again and the blood diarrhea started again. It seems after reading all these complaints that the two are connected. And I have to say I spent $300 at the emergency vet and now my dog is back to square one (he will be okay in a couple of days, but why should he have to go through this again?). And Royal Canin is not a cheap food - a small bag costs $17. I just want to thank everyone for posting their experiences or I never would have figured out the cause of my dog's extreme gastric distress.

I found this site, by accident, a few weeks ago while trying to find phosphorus content in the Royal Canin Urinary S/O my cat has eaten for 8 years, as another cat I have was possibly going to be put on, and that one needs low phosphorous. However once I found this site, it made me uneasy and I asked my vet to put her on a different brand.
My male Himalayan cat who has been on it about 8 years, near end of year (Dec, 2013) first started throwing up his food (whole) not digested. I did not think a lot of it as he did not do it every time he ate and I have had no issues with Royal Canin in past. It started with the NEWER bags, like others have mentioned. However while I rarely go by internet chatter, to have so many cases so close together with same symptoms, different formulas of RC, and most newer bags but no past problems, I became quite uneasy, but did not file a report with them as his past issue was mild. BUT THEN last night he was rushed to ER vet (like many here have said with their pets) with bleeding and blood clots when he peed. He has had P/U surgery 8 years ago and has never had that issue (this is the surgery they do for blocked cats who usually then go on a RX diet as he went on S/O 8 years ago).
Xrays showed nothing unusual in any organs. Blood work fairly normal. Urine test showed high level red blood cells and WBC. I can NOT say it was Royal Canin, but based on so many having similar situations here, I am going to take him off. ER Vet cost me almost $700 and I will be going to my vet. He is on antibiotics. I called the FDA to ask about any adverse reports, when they called me back the representative was quite nice. I told her of all these complaints here and how it seemed unusual it all recently started. She said FDA has "VERY strict monitoring and how they do it is by weekly meetings going over data to see if they see any patterns on ANY food within a short period of time or time frame." She advised me to file a report with them AND Royal Canin. She also said for anyone here who has NOT filed with FDA about POSSIBLE Adverse Effects needs to do so, so that the FDA can keep track at their weekly meetings. They cannot do it if you do not file with them. They cannot help either if you don't file so they can review, on ANY food. "You also should call Royal Canin," she said.
I told her I would post link here, in case anyone did not realize you also need to file with FDA WITH ANY PET FOOD OR FOOD. So here is link for those who need it. I reported my adverse to Royal Canin but did not realize it needed to go to FDA also on any food (not just this one). This may end up not a real problem with the food, but it also might, so I will let FDA decide by reports and their procedures. It angers me that in USA we have to watch all pet food so carefully. My cat has been eating Urinary dry food for a few years now ever since having kidney stones. He had to have a complicated surgery, basically turning him from a boy into a girl, so he could pass stones more easily. He recovered well and is rarely ill. He never vomits, except when he has a hairball.
However, the last time I bought a bag of this food (I always buy the same food, at the same veterinary office) I noticed the nuts were a different shape than usual. Normally the nuts are very even, all the same size and perfectly smooth. In this bag, which look exactly the same as any other bag I've ever bought, the nuts were all uneven. They are much thicker and jagged, like they were made in a hurry. I was suspicious but my cat ate them, so I thought they must be okay. I just put it down to a change in manufacturer who makes them for Royal Canin.
Just last week, however, my cat became very ill. He vomited, had diarrhea, and refused to eat any more. We took him to the vet and he had a very high fever! The vet said it was just a tummy bug and he gave him two shots: steroid and antibiotics. My cat seemed to be recovering, but just last night he vomited again and he peed all over the house and there were drops of blood everywhere. Of course with his medical history, it could be his kidneys, but he peed in his litter box just now, and I couldn't see any blood, so I think the blood was coming from his bowel. He still eats very little and I am very concerned that it has to do with the food. I'm taking him back to the vet this evening.
After reading all your comments I am switching brands immediately! I'll be talking to my vet about the irregular nuts. I hope he will take action.

I opened a new bag of Royal Canin Chihuahua food for my 2 Chihuahuas around Jan 10, 2014. I have two 4-year-old Chihuahuas, one is 3 lbs and the other weighs 6 lbs. About 2 and a half to 3 weeks after giving them the Royal Canin food my 3 lb Chihuahua had multiple seizures and I had to take her to an emergency veterinarian clinic. She convulsed multiple times a day for 3 days and had to be sedated with Valium. She hadn't eaten anything new, she hadn't been poisoned, and I hadn't used any new cleaning products. It was the first time she had ever had a seizure. I took her to my regular veterinarian and they ran many tests and everything seemed fine.
My veterinarian gave me a recipe for homemade dog food and I have only been feeding her that and she has been seizure free! I haven't even been giving her any anticonvulsant medication. My other 6 lb Chihuahua started to get sick as well. She stopped eating and was having diarrhea, and she was acting strange. I switched her diet to a home cooked diet as well and she is feeling much better. We're taking her to the veterinarian today to make sure the food didn't damage any of her organs like her liver. I'm really unsatisfied with what Royal Canin food did to my pets! They sold the company and now they are poisoning our pets! I have heard many similar stories and I hope everyone stops buying this food!!

I have fed RC urinary SO for the past 4 years. I was buying the Canadian Medical until last spring, when I started buying the USA variety, because it can be purchased cheaper than here in Canada. I have had 2 boys on this food for 4 years, the third boy has been eating it a year and the 4th boy (All Himalayan neuters) has been eating it since his pu surgery last early fall, and recently a little 17 year old Tonkinese female has been eating it as well. I have had no problems whatsoever but.... with what I am reading here, I am beginning to wonder if there is now a problem. My boys are gorgeous... long matt - free silky coats and weighing around 11 to 12 pounds plus. The little Tonkinese spay has always vomited a fair amount but this food stays down well... and she loves it.
I am going to check out my two new bags of RC in hopes they are the same as the bag I am now feeding. I will be keeping track in here.... I would love to recommend this food but in view of the recent reviews in here, I am hesitant. I have had issues with kidney failure in the past. All three Tonkinese cats had been eating Purina cat chow and died at the ages of 12-14. They were all related to the 17 year old I have now. My son recently lost an almost 17 year old Siamese that had been eating a different food altogether but he was an old cat and they can't live forever. Too bad someone wouldn't start mouse formulas. At any rate, I will be closely monitoring this site.

However, with this new supply of Royal Canin, she will take a bite and walk away, come back and do the same for a few more bites. At her last feeding, she wouldn't touch it. She is very smart and seems to have figured this out before we did. She is weak and stumbling. Have a call into vet now. It appears we will be taking her to ER. The only change in her diet/routine was the new purchase of Royal Canin food. Our daughter has a poodle on the same food who has been in vets this week on IV for diarrhea. My 4-yr-old DISH has been on Royal Canin since I adopted her at 3 months of age. She is strictly indoor, never gets table/people food, and is an "only child." Over the past 6+ months she has been less and less interested in eating her food and has been throwing up. She has also developed what appears to be miliary dermatitis with hair loss without any signs or symptoms of fleas. At first I thought the dermatitis might be due to a change in her litter from clay to wheat, so I switched back to clay. The dermatitis - and her lack of interest in her food - has not changed. I used to brag about her beautiful, shiny coat (per vet, diet related). I am confident that her signs and symptoms are a direct result of her food, Royal Canin Indoor, mixed with dental formula and will be finding a new food in hopes that my poor kitty will once again have her appetite and health. When I spoke with someone at the pet supply store, they said that RC changed its formula recently. I, for one, am not happy with the result. My wife and I are the owners of our 2nd Jack Russell puppy (now currently 2yrs old). Our first Jack passed from Liver and renal failure. We are also clients of your veterinary clinic. I am writing to you in hopes that someone will read this and not just see some wack job spouting off to your clinic, instead a concerned pet owner who believes that the products your clinic is recommending had a hand in the illness of our pets. I have no proof but I have common sense and a bit of research that tells me "if it smells like a duck", "quacks like a duck" it's probably a DUCK! I am an average person and consumer who loves his pet not some crazed lobbyist or "against the machine" citizen who feels the need to fight the system. My wife and I will continue to bring our pets to your clinic. We love the care and attention they receive and truly believe that the work being done is in earnest. This is not about your clinic.
Not knowing anything about the dog food industry, I am now in absolute fear of any commercially produced products here in the United States. My eyes have been widely opened and if I could turn back the clock I would. The regulating bodies for pet foods in this country are so loosely monitored and the pet food industry is so commercialized and based around monetary profit taking that the industry does not have wellness and health in mind when producing its products. Pet foods produced in this country are so laced with contaminants, toxins and byproducts including cancer causing agents, toxins from euthanized animals, plastics, disease and rotted contaminants. Manufacturers of "good quality veterinarian recommended food" are just as susceptible to the shady practices as standard off the shelf brands and given time and a little research it's obvious that the industry is in real trouble and has been the subject of many recalls and hundreds if not thousands of claims filed against it for contaminated, toxic or even death causing foods.
Living in the United States of America, I am like many thousands if not millions of pet owners who see commercials, listen to advertisements, take advice from my veterinarian and generally believe in the system. It is the U.S. of A and we have all been conditioned to believe we live in the greatest country in the world and that we should not have to worry about industry that is supposed to be regulated to the "highest standards". NOT THE CASE! The pet food industry is one of the most non-regulated, lobbied and monetarily driven industries in this country. It may be worse than the Cigarette industry?
Our first dog was switched over to Royal Canin dog food by our local vet (your clinic) at the age of 14 and died shortly after with no thought as to why his liver and kidneys failed. We chalked it up to old age (reasonable assumption for most I would think considering his age?). He was a very healthy dog except the last few years of his life where he rapidly declined. He was fed commercial dog food produced here in the United States all his life so it's difficult to pinpoint Royal Canin or any other brand he was fed through out his lifetime. I am writing this letter 4yrs or so after his death and it has taken me this long to piece things together.
As the story goes we find ourselves with another Jack Russell and we have been feeding him Royal Canin for about 16 months now. He has been ill twice and during his last illness (vomiting and general fatigue) I noticed that he would pick out bits of his food and take them out of his bowl. Common sense tells me he doesn't like something in those bits of food and maybe that is what is making him ill????? After a few vet visits and some fecal matter testing, the vet can't really find any "significant" problem or reason that he is sick. After switching his food to a different brand food (no names being mentioned), just to experiment I find that he is suddenly with more energy, has stopped with his illness, is no longer throwing up and is in a happy state which got me to thinking???????? So I start doing some research on the internet and find that I am probably like millions of other pet owners who have no idea how badly the pet food industry is regulated. Animal byproducts laced with (4D), euthanized animal products and not fit for human consumption products in the foods. Your clinic's particular line of foods (Royal Canin) has been recalled in the past more than once. "Many of the pet food industry recalls are silent and millions of pet owners are never informed".
I would like to consider myself an informed consumer. Unfortunately if the system is built to railroad the consumer and the industry is one big secret and pack of lies in order to reap huge profits, it's very difficult to be an informed consumer. How can I be informed if even my Veterinary Clinic is falling for the same hype and misleading commercialism from the industry. I would like to urge your clinic to at very least do some research on the pet food industry and make an informed decision about the line of products your recommending to your consumers.
Let's get one thing clear: I am absolutely not blaming the products your clinic recommended for my pet's illness or my previous dog's death. It would require a fair bit of expense and toxicology testing and even then it would be so difficult to prove the long-term effects of exposure to toxic pet foods. With no substantial proof I would never do such a thing (tie blame to your clinic). It would be similar to a radiation health care worker blaming his cancer on his/her employment. We all know radiation causes cancer and cell change but an X-ray tech who comes down with thyroid cancer after 15 yrs of working in the field would have one heck of a time proving that the radiation was the culprit.
One thing is for sure! The facts about the dog food industry are out there and it's a shame that the industry itself is built for profit and not for nutrition, health and wellness. I do believe that after some serious contemplation, research, observation and sole searching that the commercialized dog food my pets have been so ignorantly subjected to (by myself) has contributed to their illness (my personal opinion). Unfortunately the new bag of Royal Canin that my dog recently started (latest illness and symptoms started with this bag of food) will have to be discarded and I will no longer purchase this product or any other commercially available dog food processed here in the United States.
My wife and I have switched our pet over to a dog food manufactured in Canada by Champion Dog Food called Acana. They also manufacture a line called Orijen. Our puppy is now happy and full of energy. Has no illness and is 100% full of life. Champion Dog Foods are one of the very few foods I could find that are manufactured with products truly FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION and not just labeled as such. They are highly regarded around the industry and do not outsource any of their products or manufacturing processes. They truly produce pet food with health and wellness as their number one priority.
Please do not regard this as a sales pitch or a scare tactic. I have no interest in Champion Pet Foods or affiliation to them in any way. We are simply trying to inform friends, family and anyone who loves their pets that will listen to what we believe is to be happening in the pet food industry within this country. In the end, this is strictly a consumer/buyer beware issue. The amount of negative information about the dog food industry in the United States and its governing bodies is plentiful and its very unsettling to say the least. Numerous articles about dog owners, breeders who believe the dog food industry is giving cancer, organ failure and death to our pets.
Once again: Please do your own research! Our hearts are broken considering that we may have contributed through our own ignorance to the death of our previous Jack Russell and the illness of our current pup. Thanks for listening to our story.

Within days of being fed from a brand new bag, my cat became lethargic. He was throwing up violently, repeatedly. He would sniff his food and walk away. He no longer wanted to eat his kibble which he previously loved. One day that week I came home and found his face looked bloody, his lips and eyelids bright red and swollen. His chin bright red and gums. The skin over his temples had lost fur and were covered with inflamed "sores". The skin was bright red in those areas. He was congested and sounded like labored breathing.
Naturally he was rushed to the vet immediately. He was given steroids, antihistamines, antibiotics and something for the itch on his face. The vet stated it was definitely something he ate. His lungs sounded troubling and his airway was inflamed. With the medication he improved slightly, but he would not touch his food. I grew increasingly alarmed. By the end of the week, I decided to switch his food for a hypoallergenic dry food. Within 3 days he was almost fully recovered. He still has red patches on his face but they are very much improved. He has energy again and is more like himself. Then I found this page. Considering the absolutely only thing that changed was the new food bag, I cannot help but think there may be something wrong with it. He does not get treats, he is on a strict diet. He is an indoors only cat and the only pet in the house. By changing his food, he got better. This cannot be a coincidence.

My cat who is about 15 (he is a rescue and I've had him 11 years) lives to eat instead of eats to live as my vet says. He has been on wet and dry Royal Canin High Fiber Calorie Control since May 2011 to try and get his weight down. I noticed in November he was not as keen on the wet food. I ordered two new cases of the wet in November and since they have arrived he doesn't eat much of the food. I've noticed that he has occasional hairball coughing attacks but rarely gets them up but the vet said the fiber in the wet food should help him to digest them but I was hesitant and started to mix his old Hill's Science Diet Hairball Senior hard food back into his diet. He has been having terrible occasional gas since the end of November.
On Saturday he was not himself - not eating much, looked sad and his tail was twitching angrily most of the day. He will eat the Hill's Science Diet Hairball Senior hard food but turns his nose up at the Royal Canin wet food. His Royal Canin hard food ran out and I haven't ordered more. A trip to the vet yesterday revealed a high EOS count in his blood work which the vet said is a sign of a parasite or allergy. His EOS count was fine during his annual September 2013 checkup. The vet thinks it could be round worms but my cat is strictly indoors and is an "only child." I brought up the food issue but the vet quickly dismissed it and said that he's been on the diet for almost two years so he didn't think it was related. My parents lost one of my childhood cats a few years ago during the massive wet cat food outbreak (not Royal Canin) from liver failure as his food was contaminated. I'm going to call my vet to bring their attention to the other reports I have read today. In the meantime, I'm trusting my cats instincts and not giving him the Royal Canin.

We rushed her to the vets this morning, who has told us she may have Gastroenteritis. She has had all the tests, bloods, etc. and is now on a drip overnight at the hospital. They are not quite sure if that's exactly what it is and all the tests have come back normal. Lucy is 10 years old and has never been sick in her life. She never vomits and is always lively. To see her become so ill in such a short space of time is awful and she has never been away from us overnight so I cannot begin to think how she is coping.
I have been advised she has stopped being sick now and I believe that is because I lifted her Royal Canin Persian food yesterday to let her stomach settle down. I noticed a couple of weeks ago they had changed the bags from Persian 30 to Persian. Funny I thought but purchased it anyway as a trusted brand as I have done for over 10 years. This food is the only thing that has changed in Lucy's life. She is an indoor healthy cat and has only ever eaten Royal Canin all her life. This food has poisoned my lovely cat. While Maxx was in the hospital, the 15 year old cat became ill, vomiting, lethargic and stopped walking. Since the cats had never been separated, we thought he was just grieving about the other cat being away and he had always routinely thrown up hairballs and food. When he began loudly crying, we rushed him to the hospital and the Vet determined that he was terminally sick and anemic. The Ultrasound/X-rays revealed lungs appearing to be damaged by some type of allergic reaction, yet he had never had allergies or had never even coughed. The CBC blood test revealed significantly elevated levels of numerous items and his liver was failing. After a blood transfusion, there was no improvement and there was no hope for recovery.
In the meantime, due to Maxx continuing not to eat, he had several trips back to the Vet. On two occasions the Vet force fed and hydrated him. He was treated with two rounds of steroids. After the first steroid shot, he began eating and drinking, but not his normal amount. Five days later, the steroid appeared to wear off and he stopped eating and drinking again. The second steroid shot appeared to work for one day since he nibbled a little at his food. For three weeks, he refused to eat and drank very little water so I had begun to syringe feed him.
Two different Vets gave different diagnosis. My family Vet thought he had some type of musculoskeletal autoimmune disease in his face and jowl creating pain which prevented him from eating. The second Vet believed he had some type of gastro/stomach type issue and prescribed Pepcid and pain medication. The pain medication only appeared to make him sicker so I stopped using it. Obviously neither Vet knew exactly what was wrong with Maxx. In September he weighed 14 pounds and today he was down to 8 pounds. A final trip tonight to the Vet revealed that he was terminally ill, anemic with some unknown diagnosis. The Vet believed he was really too sick to complete more tests.
How can two healthy cats who were not from the same family, mysteriously die within a month of each other? Needless to say, we are devastated... We plan to perform additional research regarding Royal Canin Urinary So in order to hopefully get some answers as to why.

Started feeding my 7-month Toy Poodle Royal Canin Puppy x-small dry dog food. She seemed to tolerate it fine. Then all of a sudden in order to get her to eat it, I had to hand feed her. Now the last 2 days, she has been sick, lethargic and droopy eyed. I gave her Pepto yesterday and held the food last night and she perked back to her normal self. She woke up all peppy. Then again this morning not realizing I gave her the food and here we go again, same reaction. I will be returning the food to Pet Supplies Plus and yet another day of Pepto. Had I realized this yesterday I would have not given it to her again. I am very angry that this expensive food that you think is good for your animal does this and to even think they push this in the store claiming it's the best you can buy.

On 11/29/2013 I posted on here about Abby, my 11 year old persian cat. She spent 2 days in the ER and the vet confirmed she has pancreatitis. The vet also confirmed that cats usually get pancreatitis due to an allergic reaction to food. I have been giving Abby Royal Canin Urinary SO for 3 years and this is the first time this is had happened! Given all the responses on here, I am pretty confident the food was the issue and I intend to call Royal Canin and complain. I am going to send them a copy of her diagnoses and see if the vet is also willing comment on this. The vet recommended I change her diet to a more hypoallergenic brand, a venison based product. I am waiting patiently today to learn if I can take Abby home.
I think given the amount of recent comments, there has to be something wrong with certain lots of Royal Canin Urinary SO and the company needs to be aware of this. Also other consumers. I am curious as to how many incidences of sickness has to take place before they will recall a product. This is something I am going to look into.
I felt this was a good place to post this and I hope if other people are having the same issues with their beloved pets, they know that a change of diet may help.

Our 10 year-old cat has enthusiastically preferred this dry food over the canned Royal Canin Urinary SO for approx 7 years (after being diagnosed with cystitis and vet's recommendation that this brand and combo be a permanent diet). With the recent purchase of a new bag, he began throwing up after eating the dry food (not hair balls - obvious dry food vomit). We always store it in its original air-tight bag. We tried decreasing the amount. Didn't help. Then pulled it from his diet completely. Now, when offered the dry food, he sniffs it and walks away.
This is totally out of his behavior as he loves to eat. Since stopping the Royal Canin Urinary SO - moderate calorie dry cat food, no more vomiting. We are investigating and appreciate everyone's shared experiences. BBO/MA 09142014/CAD 14SEP2014 10:26 R4 HECHO EN/FABRIQUE AU/MADE IN USA...... TAG INFO: P484366B.

I have been feeding Abby Royal Canin Urinary SO for about 3 years. She is a Persian cat, 11 years old. She has always been a bit on the vomity side. She doesn't like to be brushed and has long hair, so hairballs are the norm. On Friday (11/22/2013), she had a bout with a hairball, or so I thought, and seemed fine over the weekend. On Monday (11/25/2013), she started up again and even produced a large long hair ball. Immediately thereafter, she threw up significantly all that she had just ate. I suspected she had an upset stomach. She continued to throw up off and on from Monday on. About 2-3 times. Again, this didn't seem too unusual, but I was on high alert.
On Wednesday afternoon, she just stopped eating and drinking. She would come up to her bowl to eat, but then immediately start gagging. I first thought a hairball was stuck and decided to give her sometime. However, when she started to get lethargic, I decided to take her to the vet today (11/29/2013). The vet has diagnosed her with pancreatitis. I don't know if there is a direct correlation, but reading all these posts with similar issues in cats, many starting in the fall of 2013, I am starting to wonder if there is a causality between the food and her sickness. I purchased her food online at Petfood Direct. It was purchased on 10/31/2013. I couldn't find a lot number, but the purchase by date is BBO/MA 09/26/2014.
I started feeding her the new bag around 11/11/2013 and it was a week later, she started to vomit. Everything that I have read on pancreatitis states generally the causes for it are unknown; however, it is usually due to diet. I don't want to be an alarmist. Like I said, my cat has a history of puking, but never EVER not eating, so I can't help but wonder/worry if there is connection between this new bag of Royal Canin SO and her suddenly getting so sick. I will update if after talking to my vet, they think there may be a connection. In any event, I just felt necessary to post what happened to me.

All of our cats (7 indoor domestic shorthairs) seem to deal with LUTD on one level or another so my vet put the household on Royal Canin SO. I bought the 17.6 lb. bag and a case of the 5oz. cans. This was early November 2013. They "ate" it after introducing it slowly, but I could tell they didn't "love" either the kibble or canned. I've gone through most of the food and was doing an online search for it to do some price comparison and saw that it's a different name than what I have. It's now being called SO 33, whereas my bag only shows SO. So being puzzled I came across the Consumer Affairs website and saw the shocking reviews about the product. Immediately I called my vet and also sent a link to the CS website and begged them to not sell it to another soul until this is figured out.
My husband is now on his way to the vet to get Feline CD and we have completely removed the food from their dishes. I don't see an actual "Lot Number" on my bag, but if it's under the UPC code, it's 470718 / P470718B. The UPC code is 3011147018. It's "Best By" date is 9/14/2014 and it says it was made in the USA. None of my cats have gotten sick so I'm thinking this must be an older batch. Plus the fact that it doesn't state "SO 33" but just "SO" makes me believe that too. My heart breaks for those who've watched their pets suffer and/or die. This is simply unacceptable. I'm looking into how to contact news organizations so that word can get out. We are a small few of what I'm sure are thousands of pet owners who are feeding their pets this poison.

In all fairness, Royal Canin has always been responsive to my issues with their foods from time to time. Previously I wrote here about the size of the kibble in the Special 33 being smaller than usual, taking pics of it because my cats would not eat it, even though it was fresh from a newly-opened bag. The company said that maybe they wouldn't eat it if I stored it in bins where it could get contaminated. I do store in bins as I feel they offer more protection than an opened bag... and my cats go through the bag in less than a month, plus I wash out the bin after one batch is used and another is added. They also said that mine was the only complaint about that particular lot number.
I suggest that any of us that have issues in the future write or call them and identify what lot number, etc. so that they can track issues. They had already ordered two replacement bags for me since I tossed the food that my cats and my ferals too would not eat, and before I decided maybe I should take the refund instead... So when they got here a week or so later, I was happy to see that it was a different lot number/date stamp, since the 4 bags I'd just gotten were all from the lot that my cats were avoiding. I put the "new" Special 33, still off size from what I have grown to expect, it was smaller like the kitten kibble... out and voila! All the cats including the ferals went straight to the dish and started eating it up like old times. Go figure.
I have no idea what happened with that lot that they think is "okay," I still have some of it, but I think that somehow something went wrong... maybe the way it was stored there, something in the taste, or worse... not a clue, but only if we get proactive about what date, what lot, when, where, and what happened and report back to the company, can we expect them to verify it (hopefully). They did mention when I asked that there was a "slight, formula change" in August 2012. However, they did not tell me what that was.
I was not aware that RC is under the Mars umbrella of companies, and wonder when they stopped being a privately owned Canadian company or what the exact ownership structure is... Frankly, I hated going out and testing 5-6 new brands of cat food, but now that I have done some of that, I'll probably always try to mix and match so if there is something wrong with one brand, maybe they will at least show me and gravitate towards the other.. Best of luck...

My 2-yr-old Mini-Dachshund has been on Royal Canin since she was 8 weeks old as recommended by a sales guy from Petsmart and our vet. She periodically gets sick (mostly vomiting, but occasionally also diarrhea). I brought this up to my vet when my dog was about 6 months old and I was told that Dachshunds commonly have sensitive stomachs (this is my first Dachshund) and not to worry about it. So on and off for the last 2 years my dog gets sick.... It seemed to happen a lot more often in her first year when she was eating the RC puppy formula. Then she switched to the adult small kibble, mixed with the RC Dachshund formula and was sick less often. But she was gaining too much weight so we switched her to the adult diet formula and she has been getting sick more often again and most recently has vomited the past 2 days.
I never suspected it was her dog food (and she does not get any human food) but since she is about done with this bag, I went online reading about different brands of food. I am SHOCKED to find all these reviews and it now makes sense that she's been getting sick from her dog food. I was raised with dogs my whole life and they NEVER got sick, and we fed them the cheap stuff. I can't believe this expensive, supposedly top of the line company is distributing DEFECTIVE pet food and not doing anything about it. I've been poisoning my dog with this crap since she was 8 weeks old!!! I'm livid to say the least and will be filing numerous complaints and a possible lawsuit until the company does something about it and stops poisoning our pets!!!

I've been feeding RC Special 33 for years. I am a breeder and have quite a few cats. They have always loved RC until a few weeks ago. I noticed that they were not eating their dry food very much and were waiting for their daily wet food. I have been seeing an unusual amount of diarrhea as well. On top of that, I noticed a few weeks ago that the kibble in one of the 35 pound bags of Special 33 did not look like what I am used to seeing. I remember this happened about a year plus ago, and I told a representative of the company about it. She told me I should have saved the bag and I could have gotten a refund.
This time, I called the company, saved the bag and contents, took photos of smaller sized Special 33 kibble next to the usual, normal size and sent them the photographs marked with the lot date. It was AGO 19, 2014 7:53 RI (in another spot it says August). I talked to tech support and told them I feel there is something wrong with this batch of food, since my many cats were refusing to eat it, whereas never before. They offered to send me 2 replacement 35 pound bags the next day. I've been waiting about a week and the bags aren't here yet. They said they were having "shipping issues."
I then fell back on two more 35 pound bags I had. One came recently with a “Buy-2-Baby Cat - get 1 Special 33 bag free” offer. I didn't know the lot date until I opened the box with all 3 bags in it. It was the same AGO 19, 2014 RI date. Pardon my stupidity, but I opened it, thinking it must have been a fluke the last time. The same small, close to "kitten size" kibble was in it. I did not give this to my cats. I opened another box. My last backup sent two orders ago of the Special 33 and it too has the same lot/date. I did not open this bag and called the company.
When I asked to be sent bags that were not from this lot, they told me that it is impossible for them to know at the warehouse what the dates on the available bags are and they couldn't promise that the bags that would be sent would not be from that lot/date. When I asked how long it would take to have a new date/lot supply, they said, "Well it is good until 2014, so after that." Meaning I would have to wait 9 months to get a different lot. What kind of business is this?
In the past Royal Canin has bent over backwards to take care of issues. This time, no. I am now without consistent, reliable food for my cats, have to try a lot of brands, paying retail, and the company seems unconcerned. The contact I have been emailing says that the "technical department is investigating" and she would let me know. But the first "excuse" was that it falls within the "size variation" of the Special 33. But all of the kibble is very small in these bags that my cats do not want to eat. My feral cats outside have not wanted to eat it either, and have not been acting 100%.
I didn't know about this site before trying to research how to find the CEO and ask him/her about this so really didn't even go into the diarrhea with them. I did put out multiple bowls of various foods, Science Diet, Meow Mix, Whiskas, RC Hypoallergenic, and once I put the RC small sized Special 33 on the end of the different cat food bowls, a cat went up to it, and specifically tried to bury it without tasting it.
Has the formula changed? Some of you comment on that. I don't have the details but will go back and read up on that. Anyone with any more specific info, please post so that I can be up to date. Btw, I have a 5 year old stud who suddenly took ill within the last 9 days. High temp of 104, refusing to eat, very sick acting. The blood profile and CBC showed all organs functioning normally. The vet suspects bacteria of unknown origin. Now I am wondering if this could be food-related? I don't know but after days of fluids, force feeding, antibiotics, he is starting to turn around. His abdomen was very sore when I picked him up when he was first sick. All he got was RC Special 33 and another brand wet food. This is very unsettling and scary to be sure.

Our 3 year old male was diagnosed with diabetes and the vet prescribed the calorie control formula (which has a very high percentage of carbs, for a diabetic?) for him. She said it would be safe for his sister to eat also. Both cats were given a small handful to see if they liked it. Within two hours, the female cat had vomited the food and continued to vomit throughout the evening. She seemed fine the next day. The male cat seemed ok until the next morning when he got very mopey and then vomited and had diarrhea. The vet is telling us that it was a drastic food change and that we should just mix some of their old food in with the new. I think I am dumping this crap.

Hmmm... I bought my first bag of Royal Canin Main Coon dry food on 5/27/13, so I would have started introducing it into the cats' diets in June. Cedric started coughing occasionally sometime in late June. He kept me up all night with coughing fits every hour on the hour on Sunday 7/7 and it had gotten so bad that I almost brought him to the emergency vet. I called him on Monday morning 7/8. They told me to treat for hairballs for a couple of weeks and see if that would help. (I KNEW it wasn't hairballs and the coughing got worse - not just at night time anymore but in the evenings, then also throughout the day and finally in the mornings too. But this was a crazy busy time with my Mom's recovery from surgery (and several weeks in the hospital) and other major things happening around me, so I couldn't take him in for a while.)
On July 29 his coughing fits were happening all throughout the day. His breathing had become labored and he had a fever and his eyes looked sad and sick. Brought him to the vet and he weighed 14 lbs. on 7/29, so he hadn't started losing weight yet. The vet did x-rays and blood work. He was diagnosed with Feline Asthma that day and they said he had "classic donut" patterns in his lungs consistent with asthma. He was put on a full tab of prednisolone starting out 2x/day along with some liquid antibiotic 2x/day for 3 weeks! PLUS 1/2 tab of theophylline (bronchodilator) every night and it took something like 6-8 weeks to finally step him all the way down off the prednisolone. Had to put him on inhaled Flovent as soon as it could arrive from overseas and I got an Aerokat chamber to give it to him every day. That's the only thing I still do for his breathing one to two times per day.
His breathing is stable now and except for two isolated occasions in October, he hasn't coughed (after that I upped his puffing Flovent to 2x/day). On October 28, 2013 I bought a second bag of RC Maine Coon food and the recipe was completely different to the point that the instructions said to introduce it slowly (as though it were completely different!). I ALMOST didn't feed it to him because the ingredients were so noticeably inferior (and they weren't the greatest to start out with) even though it's outrageously expensive. I GOT it only because the kibble is about twice the size of normal dry cat food, since it's formulated for big cats. The new formula is smaller and less dense, with a coarse texture. RC told me it's about 10 calories fewer per cup (and from the texture I'm thinking that's because there is MORE AIR mixed into the food to keep the volume in the bag the same but give pets less actual food and less quality nutrition per serving).
I had noticed that Cedric had lost weight after getting off the prednisolone (maybe a pound or so by the end of September to mid October) but in the past 3 weeks he went from what I perceived as "lighter" to downright bony, and within the past few days alone, frighteningly so--now looking sunken and feeling fragile. On 11/9, I brought him to the vet and his weight had dropped to 12.2 pounds - 12.8% of his body weight lost in just 3 months. Too quick weight loss can kill cats because it damages their livers. The vet suspected that he had FIP, a fatal disease, but his blood work ruled that out, thank God. After consulting with a specialist of some kind she now suspects a food allergy. And based on the timing of his symptoms and the new food, so do I. (But I'm more inclined to call it food POISONING like the nationwide recall of food that killed thousands of pets a few years ago!)
I dumped out the Royal Canin food immediately yesterday evening and will keep everyone posted as to how Cedric does. Even though he's completely an inside cat they want me to do a 3-day deworming with some nasty white liquid medicine I have to give him. (One more day to go.) Just after one day of deworming and off the RC food his behavior was noticeably perkier and his appetite seemed much better than it has been, both this morning and this evening (can that be possible so quickly?!). When I came home from work tonight he was much more playful than he has been in a long time that early in the evening (usually he waits till I'm ready to go to sleep to start bouncing off the walls).
I am encouraged that I might not have to go through a long trial-and-error period of an elimination diet that would be VERY difficult to manage with a super-finicky cat in a 2-cat household. Stay tuned.... and if your pets eat Royal Canin, I strongly urge you to PLEASE TAKE THEM OFF OF IT. NOW!!! The vet said they have gotten many complaints from owners about the adverse effects the new formula is having on their pets who've eaten this food for years. SHAME on these companies who endanger pets' lives with a product that either poisons or starves them to death. This site shows a SHOCKING number of similar complaints about what the recipe change in this food is doing to other peoples' pets. I hope I got my sweet boy off this stuff early enough that he won't suffer any permanent organ damage.

After seeing the other posts, I am now certain that my suspicions about the recent batch of Royal Canin "Adult Fit" for cats has some sort of problem. I have a 5 year old and a 10 year old cat. They have both been eating Royal Canin dry food for a few years. They are indoor cats and have always had very good health. After opening a new bag of Royal Canin, my 5 year old suddenly started having diarrhea and vomiting (11-2/13). Her vomiting was continuous, and she would drool and froth at the mouth for hours after vomiting. This was not the normal occasional vomiting of a hairball. It was followed with smelly, oozy diarrhea.
I took her to the vet where they performed x-rays, MRIs, blood work, dental check and just about anything else you can imagine. Many traumatic hours later, and many dollars later, they could not determine was was wrong with her. She was given SubQ fluids, an anti-nausea shot, and antibiotics. I put her on a wet food diet per the vet's recommendation. In the meantime, my 10 year old kitty was on the same regimen to make things easier. She slowly improved over a week's time. I started adding the dry RC food back to her bowl. Then BAM - less than 12 hours later, we were back at square one with uncontrollable vomiting. My older cat was also constantly licking his mouth and smacking like he had something stuck to the roof of his mouth. I checked for a recall on the food and found nothing. I am so thankful that other pet owners posted their problems and concerns with the Royal Canin brand food. I have dumped it in the trash. I am hoping that switching brands will solve the vomiting and diarrhea problems my poor kitty is experiencing.

Three days ago, my 6yr old began losing his appetite. He has a pancreatic disease. He and our other dog both eat the vet prescribed Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat dry food and Calorie Control High Fiber canned (one for health, the other because he is stubborn and has to have the same food). I had just opened a brand new bag and new can. He turned his nose up at his bowl and wouldn't eat it. I was able to persuade him to eat a few bits of the dry kibble but that was it. He regurgitated what he did eat about 30 minutes later. He vomited bile throughout the night. The next morning he would neither eat nor drink. I took him to the vet.
The specific pancreatic test showed no problems. The x-ray showed no stomach blockage. They gave him a shot for nausea, sub-Q fluids and Flagyl and I brought him home. He was lethargic and had a very gurgly stomach and runny stinky stools. He didn't eat on Thursday. He ate a very small amount of chicken and rice in the morning on Friday and a very small amount of kibble and wet food Friday night. No more vomiting. He slept well. He would not touch his food this morning. He will not get near the dry food. He sniffs it and backs away.
Our other dog is doing the same thing. I had to bring our other small dog in this morning as he would not eat, his stomach was extended and he was shaking uncontrollably. The vet said he probably had the same bug as the other dog. He too received anti-nausea shot, fluids and Flagyl. He too eats the same diet. Tonight neither will touch the dry food. They sniff it, turn away and will not eat it. In fact, they will not eat at all. Their stomachs are gurgly, they have diarrhea and are very lethargic.
Because of the pancreatic condition (and the shark that lives within our Cavalier who eats anything), we do not go to doggy parks, they are not boarded. Their only access to food is the Royal Canin which they are fed. I asked the vet if there was a recall on the food or if the food may be making them sick. I was told there are no recalls and it is highly unlikely as this manufacturer goes to great lengths to produce their food for both dogs and cats. I also inquired if there had been a rise in this particular type of incidence in dogs which they had seen or perhaps heard of. I was told no, mine were the first.
However, I am uncertain I have faith in that statement especially when researching the food on the internet trying to find something, I came across the recent posts of pet owners whose pets appear to have similar if not the same symptoms as my dogs. I am concerned that perhaps the food is contaminated and it hasn't been reported. I have checked the Royal Canin webpage. There are no recalls. I will contact my vet in the morning and bring these posts to their attention. I am also inquiring as to what other food I can feed a dog with pancreatic disorder as I will not continue to feed them Royal Canin. This appears too coincidental as the posts are from different states, different food variety but the same manufacturer.

My 8.5 year old Schnauzer had stones removed and was prescribed a diet of Royal Canin Urinary SO with the caveat that he may have trouble digesting it. Well he did. He had constant bouts of diarrhea and vomiting, costing me expensive trips to vet. The vet insisted that we should continue on the diet and that it was a good diet. It was not easy to find a contact at Royal Canin to ask if they had any problems with their food, but I did finally make a complaint and someone called me. She said there were no reported issues and did not ask for more information from me. I offered to give her a detail account of my experience so that they could have a record, but the person was not interested in it. So that would explain why they have no records of complaints because they have no system of taking them.
It wasn't until my poor boy's triglycerides went through the roof that the vet decided to take him off the SO and then put him on the Gastro Intestinal LF. My Schnauzer did not have a weight or triglyceride problem before going on the food. I slowly moved him onto the LF diet only to endure another almost 2 years of the same, occasional vomiting and diarrhea and several trips to the vet for flagyl. He also began eating grass A LOT and moved on to eating cat feces and then dirt. We had to watch him constantly.
In February of 2013 my boy turned 12 and started to lose weight despite a good appetite. We thought he was aging. He went from 25 pounds to 23. The end of April he weighed 22 pounds and then 21 pounds by June. He became very lethargic and disinterested in going for walks which he LOVED. In April, I decided to make his food in an attempt to put weight back on him and he started walking 4 times a day and his energy increased, but I struggled to maintain his weight around 20 pounds until he got sick in September and was diagnosed with Lymphoma. He died Oct. 3, 2013.
I will never feed another pet Royal Canin. Did it give my boy cancer? I will never know. Did it wreck his digestive track so that he wasn't getting the nutrients he needed for a strong immune system? I am convinced it is so. I should have listened to my instincts and taken him off Royal Canin a long time ago. I was afraid to go against my vet's (the experts) instructions in fear of my dog getting stones again, a costly and painful surgery. I trusted my vets to be knowledgeable in canine diets, to have done the research on behalf of me, their client; but I'm afraid this is not the case. I feel like I and my vets let my little boy down. No food should be tolerated if it makes your pet occasionally sick.

My three cats eagerly await their feeding ritual in the mornings and scarf down their food immediately. On Friday, 10/18/2013, I opened a new (fresh) bag of dry cat food Royal Canin "Mother & Baby Cat" (the same cat food that they have been eating since they were weaned). This was a new bag not a new type of cat food (BBD/MA 08112014/CAD 11AUG2014 00:41 64 HENCHO EN/FABRIQUE AU/MADE IN CANADA) and proceed to mix it with a quarter can of Blue "Kitten Wilderness High Protein Grain-Free" wet food (same wet food that they have been eating since they were weaned. Best if used by JUL 16 16 1149 U 61WKM4). All three kittens ran to their three separate dishes to eat.
Instead of scarfing down their entire portion as they usually do, they took a few bites and walked away from their plates. The uneaten food stayed in their plates all day until I returned home from work. This is very unusual, especially for all three kittens to have done. Saturday morning, 10/19/2013, I gave them again their three separate plates in the morning but only the dry food this time. All three kittens ran to their bowls. They each sniffed at their plates and all three kittens rejected the food & walked away. I picked up their uneaten dry food and added their usual wet food to it and placed the dishes back on the floor, thinking that maybe they were expecting the wet food mixed in as I usually give them and they were disappointed that they had not received it. The three kittens ran to their plates. They smelled the dry food mixed with the wet food. They each ate a few bites and then again, all three rejected the food & walked away. I picked up the food and threw it away.
I then took the youngest kitten, Berlioz, to the vet to check out an eye infection. I returned Berlioz to the house after his vet visit & left for work. When I arrived home Saturday evening after work, my daughter reported that all three kittens were throwing up all day. They did not play that day, which is very unusual for them. Sunday morning, I did not feed them to give their stomachs a chance to rest. My daughter reported that all day Sunday all three kittens continued to vomit bile. Monday 10/21/2013, they still had not eaten, not playing, laying on their sides, and continuing to vomit. I cooked food for them and they ate a few bites. I also gave them Pedialyte to rehydrate them. Tuesday 10/22/2013 (today), two of the three kittens continue to vomit. All three kittens are drinking huge amounts of water and filling up their litter boxes with a lot of pee clumps. The two oldest cats (14 & 17 weeks of age) just threw up again (8:40pm). I will take them to the vet in the morning.

On Saturday I picked up 3 cans of RC SO to be given to all three of my dogs. My one dog Gabby has crystals and a UTI and RC was recommended to her. The vet only had canned food so I had to order the bagged food. The vet said it would be ok to feed my other dogs RC. On Sunday, Chloe came down with vomiting and diarrhea. By Sunday night, she couldn't lift her head. Monday I took her to the vet. She stayed overnight was given fluids by IV and blood tests, meds. She came home the next day with the diagnosis of mild pancreatitis and I was told to take her off RC SO. The day I brought her home, Gabby, who has the crystals, started in with vomiting. As of today, I am not taking any chances and took all the dogs off RC SO.

Our kitty has just turned 1, so I bought him some new grown up kitty biscuits (he was previously on RC Kitten, Digestive Health). I mixed his old & new biscuits together to help with the transition. After eating them for only a few days, he started puking A LOT. Unfortunately when we decided that it had gotten too bad and we had to take him to the vet, it was a Sunday (22/09/13)... Apart from being super expensive, the emergency vet is about a half an hour drive from our home. Very stressful for him...They kept him overnight to re-hydrate him & check that he didn't have an intestinal blockage. They gave him the all clear the next evening & we could take him home. Although he hadn't eaten anything yet.
He ate his biscuits at home & of course puked them up straight away. We did not suspect that it was the biscuits then, just that he was still sick. Over the next few days, we took him to our vet a number of times, tried different antibiotics (they thought it was a tummy bug) & different medications to settle his tummy acid. In the end I had to take him every second day for an antibiotic injection, although he was still puking so I suspected it wasn't the medication that was the problem... The vet thought that it had been going on a lot longer than it should have been... This all added up to a lot of money, a very poor little sick kitty who lost a lot of weight & very unhappy, stressed out parents. :(
After his last injection last week, Monday (30/09/13), we started feeding him wet food instead of his biscuits as he started refusing to eat them. We feed him Applaws, a very good wet food, that I would even consider eating if I was desperate. :) He has been on that and loving it the whole week so far. I have been giving it to him in very small amounts every few hours (which means waking up twice at night to feed him... Yes, I love the little guy!). We have started feeding him more food less frequently & thought to try him on his biscuits again last night so that I would not have to wake up during the night to feed him... Unfortunately he puked immediately after eating them & at that point we knew for sure that it was these biscuits that were the root of his illness!!!!
We are so upset with Royal Canin & will never ever consider feeding him this food again. I don't even care if this was just a tainted batch. Cats should only eat wet food any way! After 500 Euros in vet bills, we no longer care that his wet food is really expensive, after all 500 euros would be enough to feed him only Applaws for almost a year (333 days to be exact). Certainly puts things into perspective!!!!!
Our kitty is still not right, having only pooped once this whole week, but he is looking better now at least. His coat is shiny & he is playing & running around like a little champ again, so hopefully this nightmare is over. We most certainly intend to take this further with RC though. If anyone else has any advice regarding this, please let me know!

I changed to Royal Canin Spayed Neutered 12+ formula for my 2 cats, aged 13 and 14. My 13-year-old cat is overweight and the 14-year-old is finicky and has a sensitive stomach. It claims to maintain an ideal weight. My thin cat started losing weight as he got diarrhea and was vomiting a clear liquid often. He was very nervous and did not want to play. My heavier cat was vomiting as well and sleeping and drinking more than usual. I give my cats wet food every second day or so. I realized that the days they had wet food, they were better. I changed their dry food to a different brand, a no-grain formula. Thankfully, I saw a huge improvement immediately after stopping the Royal Canin. No more diarrhea! And they are not throwing up clear liquid any longer. They are playful again and not nervous. I am glad I changed their food before it was too late. I can't believe they are allowed to sell this as a premium cat food!

I have a cat approx. 11 years old. About a year ago, the cat started peeing all over the house. The vet discovered the crystals and recommended that we start using the very expensive RC-SO dry food. Prior to this, the cat was eating the Purina Naturals. After 2 months, we had a 2nd ultrasound done on my cat and the crystals were gone so the food was working. The cat hated this food from the start but finally he would eat it out of starvation. Once we ran out of the food for a couple of days so we gave him the Purina Naturals again - he loved it. About a month ago, I bought another bag of the RC SO and the food just didn't smell right, the vet assured me it was fine. I could see why the cat didn't want it but I kept feeding it to him anyway.
About a week ago, my cat started throwing up after every meal and the frequency seemed to be increasing though the cat seems fine otherwise. I finally decided 3 days ago to take him off the RC and I've started giving them the Purina Naturals again - the vomiting has stopped and he seems to have more energy. I'm afraid that the urinary crystals may come back in time and I've about decided that he needs a new vet as his current one appears to have stock in RC.

I have used RC Urinary SO for approximately 7 years. My two inside cats are very sick with vomiting, and diarrhea. I went to my vet, and he gave me FortiFlora. They are very dehydrated. Dr. ** said he may have to run blood tests. Royal Canin has new labels (moderate diet), which I believe is contaminated. My suspect is they are dealing with the Chinese again. If they are not better in a week I will bring them in to my vet. Going to PetSmart tomorrow to tell the manager to take this off the shelf. I will give you an update in a week or two. Hopefully, they will survive this ordeal. Give this matter the attention it deserves!

My dog has been on Royal Canin Urinary SO for years up until about 4 months ago and she switched to Royal Canin Diabetic Food. She turned her nose up at it from the start and began vomiting in the morning. I was given medication to settle her stomach in the mornings and that seemed to control it up until a month and a half ago after getting a new bag. She began vomiting more and did not want to eat much. I took her to the vet and being a quality of life vet they wanted me to put her down as they said she was extremely sick. They do not believe in doing much testing.
Anyways, I changed vets and they checked her blood. I got the results 2 days later and this is the day the diarrhea began accompanying the vomiting. The results showed she was extremely dehydrated. I brought her in to the vet so they could hydrate her. They kept her overnight and let me bring her home the next day so I could get her to eat. As time had gone on she improved due to antibiotics, Reglan, Famotidine, and a bland diet of chicken and rice. Well, last week, I had bought a bag of Royal Canin Urinary SO again and added some to her chicken and rice that evening. Clearly it was not a lot. The next morning and later in the day I did the same.
That night she was up all night with diarrhea which by morning turned into bloody mucous diarrhea. I took her in and they hydrated her but told me the diarrhea looks bad. That night diarrhea still all night. I took her back on Friday morning to hydrate her and at this point decided we would have to put her down as we have been fighting a battle with her on and off for the last few months of being ill and now it being so much worse. I took her home again figuring we would keep her this holiday weekend so my daughter could have a chance to say goodbye.
She bounced back late Friday, no more diarrhea and Saturday hard stools. Sunday afternoon I gave her a small amount of Royal Canin food and a little diarrhea but I figured it was stress from the storms last night. She hates storms. This morning I gave her Royal Canin again which was a small amount with the rice and chicken. About an hour ago she had a lot of diarrhea. This is more than obvious now it is the food. I have been spending hundreds going into $1000 on her in the last few months for vet bills including getting her an ultrasound which showed no major problems. I am furious that all this time I have been feeding her a food that is making her sick.

The kittens latch onto the teats fine but... Even when turning the teat to 1, a 2-week-old kitten will drink 20 ml in 20 seconds. I worry that aspiration could occur and and a second concern of mine is that they don't get to enjoy actually suckling.

After experiencing prolonged diarrhea in our 10 year old Wheaten terrier, he was diagnosed with IBD and prescribed Royal Canin Hypoallergenic diet. We bought cans and a bag of the kibble. Since his 11 year old brother often ate what he did, we decided to switch them both. The 11 year old wheaten, who was healthy, within 1 day of eating the dry food began experiencing weakness of his front limbs and was falling. I suspected an ear infection (he had had them in the past) and took him to the vet. Nothing too severe was noted - a topical antibiotic was given and we were told to monitor him.
The next day, after a second meal (we now note in retrospect) he began to deteriorate rapidly - head pressing, ataxia, pain. He was taken to an emergency hospital, and died the next night. The veterinary specialist said that it had every sign of a rat poison. We have no rat poison. These dogs are walked on a leash and since the one had been ill, they were kept near the house and observed. The second dog began transitioning from the wet food to the dry kibble. Within 2 days he was bleeding from the urethra and the vet determined that his blood was not clotting. Again - the vet is saying that all tests are indicating rat poison.
This dog is watched closely. There is no way that he got into anything. A vitamin K injection stopped the bleeding. This indicates no congenital disorder. We took away the food last night upon getting that diagnosis - today I am scouring the internet. I suspect an ingredient is contaminated with low amounts of rat poisoning. Furious.

I called up Royal Canin pet food and was first told the company was having technical problems so I looked up the parent company Mars Incorporated. According to Wikipedia, they also own the following companies, Milky Way, M&M's, Twix, Skittles, Snickers, and the Mars bar. "They also produce non-confectionery snacks, such as Combos, and other foods, including Uncle Ben's Rice and pasta sauce brand Dolmio, as well as pet foods, such as Whiskas and Pedigree brands. Orbit gum is among the most popular brands, managed by the Mars subsidiary brand Wrigley. During World War II, Wrigley was selling their eponymous gum only to soldiers, while Orbit was the gum made available to the public. Though abandoned shortly after the war, about 60 years later Orbit made a comeback in America during the gum craze."
They have trained the staff to say "nothing is on a recall from Royal Canin" and don't care that your dog or cat might die. What will the company say if the same thing happens to a kid from eating Uncle Ben's Rice or M & M. Big company with lots of advertising dollars... I just hope my cat lives through the weekend after eating Royal Canin's Main Coon Cat Food. Hopefully I pulled the food from him in time.

We had a cat who allegedly came down with some kind of kidney disease. When we took her to the vet, she was not herself, but not deathly sick. The vet prescribed Royal Canin Hypoallergenic special diet - sixty bucks a bag. Well, within a week, our beloved cat was dead. Didn't suspect it was the food at that point. A few weeks later, we get another cat, a spry, energetic, outgoing cat - looks to be 9 or 10 months old. Well, the other person here decided to feed her the food from the vet, and after four days, she started to hide, seemed to have no energy, then hid all day today, and seemed to have even less energy than she did yesterday. This kitty is acting, to the letter, the same as our first ca the last week of her life. Well, I rushed to the store just now to get something edible (it's Sunday night, or she would have been at the vet - even though I have mixed feelings about the vet we took our first cat to).
Anyway, as I usually do, I read the ingredients on the packaging. I remember reading the regular brands of cat food before - noticing that more often than not, the first ingredient was either peas, corn, or some other vegetable and/or cereal. I could have sworn that cats are carnivores - they eat MEAT, not rabbit food. It's become common knowledge that the food industry is poisoning us humans, been going on for years - and we all see the results all around us, but I guess the pet food industry has taken a lesson on making billions per year on "health care". If I had the money, or any platform whatsoever, I would start a class action suit against these parasites - and make them pay for all the grief, loss, and pain that they have caused. Oh yeah, there are still those who would rather keep the blinders on, who would just as soon shut us up rather than see what is really going on.

Now, I tried my best to NOT blame Royal Canin for my Yorkie's illness, but I just returned from another all day vet visit and I'm absolutely convinced that it's the culprit. Before I go any further, I'd like to state that I have 3 dogs; 2 smalls and 1 big guy. Of course, my 2 smalls share food and the big guy gets his own big boy food. However, he likes to steal the smalls' food whenever it's available. In December 2012, I bought a brand new bag of Royal Canin Adult X-Small and after 3 days my Yorkie became extremely sick (diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, dehydration). I noticed that the bowls stayed full... and that's because not only was my Yorkie not eating, but my other small wouldn't go anywhere near the bowls. He was starving himself.
My big buy wouldn't even attempt to steal the food... so that really concerned me. So, I took the food back to PetSmart and exchanged it for a new bag of Royal Canin Mini and had no problems. I didn't think much of it... just figured my first bag was just a bad batch. Fast forward 7 months... A few days ago, I bought a new bag of Royal Canin Mini from PetSmart. Well, after 2 days, my Yorkie came down with a bad case of diarrhea and vomiting... but this time her condition was more severe. My other small also wouldn't go near the bowl and once again was throwing up yellow as was starving himself. My big guy had full access to the food... and again, didn't touch it. My Yorkie got so sick, that her blood sugar dropped to 20 when it's supposed to be at 100 (or in the ballpark). The vet said that if we hadn't brought her in, she would have died within a few hours.
The vet recommended that we go see an internal medicine specialist to find out what's really going on, so I'm going to follow through with that. The vet didn't think that the food was responsible for her illness... only because they hadn't heard anything about Royal Canin in the news; however, I truly believe that the food was the cause. I'm going to do more research as it's too coincidental that there's a voluntary recall out right now for some Royal Canin products. In the meantime, I'm not bringing that garbage anywhere near my pups' mouths.

Our pug is 9 years old and has been eating the Royal Canin Urinary SO dry dog food diet for 1 year with no ill effects. After consuming about 1/3 of a new bag, Suzie suddenly a few days ago vomited up all her dinner about 1/2 hour after eating. The next morning we fed her part of a can of moist Royal Canin Urinary SO for dogs and she kept it down. We have a habit of giving Suzie a tiny reward after each of her outside walks, so throughout this day, we gave her a few nuggets of the dry food. We skipped the evening meal to give her stomach a rest. The next morning, after another moist meal, she again vomited up the morning meal and apparently the dry food from the day before. After 5 regurgitations right in a row, we took her to the vet for $900 of testing and a few hours of observation. All she had was a slight ear infection in one ear of a mix of yeast and bacteria and a problem of overweight.
The tests on blood, urine and feces and xrays showed no anomalies and we are waiting on the thyroid test results. For two days now, Suzie has been only eating moist Royal Canin and has stopped vomiting. I am afraid to put her back on the dry food from the opened bag we have after 10 days of eating moist if the dry food is tainted. The problem is, Suzie is on the Urinary SO to prevent bladder stones which had been a very serious problem for her. The dry food seems to prevent any recurrence of bladder stones, but may now be upsetting her stomach. We are going to have the food tested for contaminants by a lab, but may have to ask a veterinary school what we should feed her instead to prevent bladder stones.

Feeding my three cats for about a year now, both the canned and dried variety, although I try to make them eat more of the can variety since I understand that the wet food is better for their urinary tract health. I really only have one cat with a urinary tract problem but all three have to be on the diet because it's impossible to segregate their food and eating habits. The last two cases of wet food, and I buy it by the case, have been rejected by my cats, all three. If I pour some of the dry variety on top of it, they'll eat around it and of course ingest some of the wet food. But they leave most of the wet behind. I read the review regarding a lady's cat not eating the dry food but my situation is the exact opposite. They have been eating the dry but won't eat the wet. The last three days my two older cats have stopped eating even the dry variety. It's possible that it's because they're getting old and sick. But I'm not sure if maybe the food is the problem. I purchase my food from PetFlow.com. I am writing this review in the hopes of starting a dialogue and hearing from others who might be experiencing this as well. Please write.

We have two sister cats - both healthy. One had a splenectomy two years ago due to osmotic fragility. So this cat we are particularly sensitive to ensuring we prevent her from infections. Both cats have been on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Adult PR for the past year. But for the past two weeks, both cats have been refusing to eat this food. It started when we bought a fresh bag and the two cats nibbled the food but did not eat as usual. Both cats vomited the food. So we thought maybe something was wrong with that bag.
We bought a second bag and they again just nibbled but did not eat as usual. The cat without the spleen now has a urinary tract infection and diarrhea. Since they are both strictly house cats, we have no idea how she got the infections. Both bags of food which are only two weeks old (since opening) smell very rancid. In fact, the food is very oily to the touch. The expiration dates on both bags are March 2014. We called Royal Canin this morning and got a very nice person on the phone but she would not accept the fact that their food could have been manufactured this way. Her thought was that something happened to it after they shipped it. If their food is so sensitive to shipping environments, then they should ensure proper procedures for shipping and warehousing the food.
Royal Canin leaves the consumer with accepting expensive food that could be spoiled during shipping and warehousing. I am not happy with Royal Canin. One more thing to know - we also use this exact same brand and type food in wet form (cans) as well. We learned last year that you cannot open one of these cans and keep it refrigerated for longer than 48 hours. There are no preservatives used in the canned food so it starts to go bad immediately. Royal Canin confirmed that this is definitely the case. Last year, we suggested to Royal Canin that they put this warning on their cans. So far, we have not seen this warning on the can labels.

Royal Canin nearly killed 3 of my cats. I was recommended Royal Canin for my Cattery, as other breeders use it. I introduced the dry and wet kitten food slowly to my cats, so I would still give them the choice to eat their usual food, Dancy Feast kitten, Ultimates, Advance kitten, etc... One of them suddenly became violently ill, throwing up, his hair straight up on his back for hours, feeling poorly, cold and upset. I looked after him but he would not eat anything else. He lost weight quickly, stopped drinking, but did not have diarrhea. I did not make the connection straight away with Royal Canin food because my other cats were fine. Then I had to hand-feed him with a baby cat bottle, kitten milk and vitamins. He was gradually better and digested the food. Then he started to drink again.
Then next day he was fine, I did not present Royal Canin to him because I tried to give him light food. He ate well and slept. The next day, I gave Royal Canin to them all, and he and his brother this time were terribly sick again. I managed to rehydrate them with sweet water. I checked on them both several times that night. My older cat also became suddenly sick that day too. He threw up and refused any food for the day. Then he came for food and had a big plate of fish in the evening. He digested it well. The first one started to refuse Royal Canin (Clever boy), and he is still tired and skinny but I believe he is recovering as he eats fish as well. The second kitten (they are 4 months old), a bit stronger than the first one, was sick all night. (Royal Canin was thrown up, then just nausea all night.)
This morning, he is skinny but he had some fish and enjoyed it. I realized last night that it was Royal Canin because I usually give my cats a choice of food so it was difficult to understand the guilty food. Suddenly, I realized they had only thrown up Royal Canin!!! My cats do not go outside, they are healthy, fully vaccinated, and get first quality food, or so I thought... Is it a scandal, as we have been given this food at a cat show as a prize? What is inside this product that poisoned my cats??? Please, please take it away from the market!

My two male 2-year-old red tabbies have been eating Royal Canin SO for 1.5 years. One has been barely keeping his weight at 9 lb, even with unlimited servings when he asks. Neither has ever been excited to eat this food, but the vet thought it was the only way, with the history of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. Last week, I brought home a new case of the 5.5 oz. cans like I always do. They BOTH simultaneously refused the food. I didn't really think of the possibility of bad food. I just thought they were being little picky eaters, so I didn't give them another option and they eventually had to eat it. I never left it out of the fridge for longer than an hour.
One of them has become very ill since eating the food. The vet ruled out obstruction and pancreatitis. Poor baby vomited water that was blood-tinged, hid in the basement and completely changed his behavior and all of his routines and had diarrhea. Note there were NO changes in our household outside of bringing in a new batch of food.

I have waited a while to post about this since my vet didn't think it was the food. Having read what others are continuing to post, I think it's important for me to add my experience. My cat had a P/U in 2004 and had been on Feline C/D every since, until Sept 2012. My vet urged me to switch to Urinary SO because of my cat's weight, the only negative report at the checkup! I agreed and we started him and my other cat on the food. There was vomiting involved shortly after, but my kitty had always been a vomiter so I didn't think much about it. It is also possible that my other cat was eating some of the evidence and there could have been more than I was noticing; therefore, I continued feeding this food until Nov 2012. I stopped in Nov. 2012 because the cat that meant everything to me presented with a lump. Nine grueling weeks later, that cat died as a result of lymphoma. Similar to other reviews I have read, some of his problems involved not being able to go to the bathroom (urinating or defecating).
My vet isn't 100% sure, but while it was discovered as a skin lymphoma, my cat's labs seem to show renal involvement early on. I am worried that there is something in this food that shouldn't be that affected the already delicate nature of his renal system (the whole reason we were using a urinary food!). When I took him off the food in Nov., I continued to feed it to my other cat for a few days with my now deceased cat isolated. She was vomiting almost every day, and she is not usually a cat that does that. I am living on pins and needles feeling her for lumps all the time because I am worried that maybe this will show up in her later since she has a stronger system than my other one. I still have the bag of food that I was feeding them in case something ends up surfacing that this company is poisoning animals. I feel terrible for not sharing this sooner, but after all this time, I still think it was the food. My cat was perfectly healthy except for a few extra pounds before I made this switch.

My orange tabby cat was put on Royal Canin Urinary SO by my vet six years ago after a bout with stones. I was told by my vet that my cat would have to stay on this food for life. I bought a new bag of food from my vet a week ago. My cat had been an extremely healthy, happy and active indoor cat but after eating from the new bag of food, he started throwing up and wasn't himself. After several days of this, I rushed him to his vet. While waiting for the vet to see him, he started crying in pain. I demanded he be seen immediately. They rushed us into the exam room and carefully took him out of his case. At this point, he could not walk. He laid on the exam table, went into a coma and died. The vet wasn't able to do anything to save him. I'm grief stricken and angry.
My cat had a long good life to be lived ahead of him and he was killed by the food that was supposed to be helping him. Why isn't this food being recalled? How many more innocent animals need to die? My vet believes there is something that was changed in the food that is poisonous to cats, and reading through here, I see it's dogs too. I will let him know. He said he will no longer sell this food after he saw what it did to my much loved cat. My vet knew him well and thought highly of him. He was a very special cat. This food is poison. It must be recalled! A class action suit must be filed against this horrible company!

We have 2 dogs, a puppy Chihuahua and an 8-year-old Pug. We bought last week Royal Canin Puppy Chihuahua for the puppy who only ate very little of it, but while at work, my pug ate a lot of it, and was so sick for 3 days with vomiting and diarrhea. On day 3, we took her to vets where she still is as we speak. We just gave them $500 deposit for her care and our estimate is between $1500-$2000 for all tests and her stay. She is so sick she needs IV for dehydration and many tests. My sister who has 2 Chihuahuas who are fussy eaters as well were at my home this week and I gave her a few cups to try on her 2 pups. The one male who ate it is now sick as well, and my puppy that ate only a little is now sick also. It has to be 100% the food. All 3 dogs were in great health and have vaccines up to date. Trust me. You will be hearing more about our poor pug who may die from this terrible food.

We bought above food from our vets as they’re the only ones that sell that brand now. Thinking nothing of it, our cat ate his normal food for one more day then went over to the new stuff. He was violently sick that night. A trip to the vets and some blood tests did not find anything unusual. We took him off dry and gave him white plain cooked fish for two nights, and there was no vomiting. Thinking he was getting well, we gave him a small amount of dry for him to eat during the day whilst we were at work. I came home to find he had vomited again. I immediately threw the dry away, gave plain fish and have stopped Royal Canin. I honestly think, having read these postings, the food is at fault. I urge everyone to be cautious feeding this stuff to your pets. I will be reporting the issue to Royal Canin on Monday.

My male cat was put on this food about 11 years ago after he was diagnosed with crystal blockage in his urinary tract; he was extremely healthy, an indoor cat, and did well on the food until I just recently bought a new bag of Royal Canin Feline Urinary SO from his vet. I still had some food left from his old bag and did not open the new one until late last week. He ate a little from the new bag but not with his usual gusto. The next day, he had eaten most of it but he had vomited a bit of the food. I fed him again and he was drinking plenty of filtered water as usual. He ate some but the next day, there was some food left.
Then the next day, I added more food to his dish since he had eaten most of it, but he seemed lethargic and not his usual self. I checked his neck to make sure he was hydrated and it sprung back so I knew he was hydrated and he was drinking plenty of filtered water. Last night, I went to check on him and he was lying on his side crying and moaning and he had vomited again besides having diarrhea; he couldn't stand and right before my eyes, he died in agony. I didn't even get a chance to rush him to the emergency vet. It happened so fast, I felt so helpless and cried as he died in my arms.
The only thing that was new was his new bag of Feline Urinary SO, he was healthy and active before he ate from this new bag of food. They killed my beloved cat with their poisonous food; I'm so heartbroken I can't stop crying. I will be taking his body to the vet for an autopsy if he will agree to do it. I will not let them get away with murdering my poor sweet cat with food that was supposed to be good for him and very expensive but instead was poison and killed him.

I have since discontinued the RC Urinary SO food as both cats exhibited constipation, itchy skin and increased vomiting as a direct result of the Royal Canine food.

The vet put my cat on Urinary SO about 3 years ago. At that time, she was only 5 but her weight has been hard to maintain and she kept on getting UTIs. It was going great. Her weight was under control; she didn't get UTIs; she was eating and recovery well. That is until this February. She suddenly lost 3lbs, started vomiting and stopped going to the bathroom. We took her to the vet, who said that she thought it was pancreatitis, later to discover it wasn't. Her belly was filled with some liquid that they thought was urine, which it wasn't. They tried cancer and it wasn't. And just in case, I did some search on her food and booya. I found this page.
I took her off the food immediately and tried many different organic versions. Fast forward to now. She is barely 4lbs, won't eat and just vomits bile. None of the vets we visited know what's wrong with her. All the tests came back negative and they just keep on asking us to pay for more and more tests. When I saw all the review and suggested to my Banfield vet that it may be the food, she promptly refused the option. I don't know what to do. I am afraid this is my last week with my kitty, unless I find a magical solution. If someone else experienced the same thing with their cat and you managed to pull through, please, please, please contact me. I would give the world to not lose my precious little girl.

I kept him quiet for the first week and have been trying to gradually increase our activity each day. Prior to this, we could take a 3-mile walk, and after a little water and a 20-minute break, he'd be ready for another one. Now he's barely able to finish a mile and won't chase a ball more than twice across the yard without an hour-long nap. This morning, he had a massive seizure. She has never been diagnosed with pancreatitis or diabetes through several blood tests in the past, as well as the ones done just prior to surgery.
Four months into after surgery, she started losing weight rapidly along with increasing thirst and urination. We brought her back to the vet and she got diagnosed with pancreatitis and diabetes. She started insulin immediately. She recovered from the pancreatitis but is now on lifetime twice daily insulin shots. Her food was changed to Hill's Prescription Diet w/d Canine Low Fat-Diabetic-Gastrointestinal Dog Food. We believe the RC Urinary S/O induced the pancreatitis which then led to the diabetes. My cat has urinary tract disease. Both my vets recommended Urinary SO from Royal Canin. After several weeks on this diet, my cat became severely constipated and his skin had dry flakes on it. After several vet visits, they recommended adding fiber and Laxatone daily. My cat has never been constipated before his UTI. This food made it worse by the days he was on it. After several exams by the vet, his anus was normal and they said it was probably not enough fiber in his diet. I noticed my other cat who is very healthy starting to get constipated as well. I switched to Hill's c/d Multicare and within a week's time, they are well hydrated with no flakes and pooping freely daily and the constipation has almost cleared. The strange thing is that the c/d diet from Hill's has the lowest fiber on the market of any pet food! This suggests it wasn't the fiber and it was the Royal Canin diet. This food made both my cats ill.
I would stay clear of Royal Canin. I have launched a complaint with them and want this food recalled as I believe it is causing issues for many cats! If you Google "Royal Canin Urinary SO constipation," you will see hundreds of people complaining about the same thing! It also makes the cats' poop smell deadly! My cat's poop on Hill's smells normal and tolerable now. What damage did this product do to my cats?

My dog has been on a vet prescribed Royal Canin Urinary SO dog food for about three years and has done very well on this diet. She generally gets the dry food in the morning and the canned (wet food) in the evening. We recently (January 2013) purchased a new bag of the dry food and began using it. Almost immediately, she began to throw up and became lethargic. She began doing dog bows to help alleviate digestive pain. We brought her to the vet who conservatively diagnosed either and intestinal disorder or possibly pancreatitis and gave us Cerenia for nausea, suggested using Pepcid and recommended that we change her food to something easily digested (chicken and rice).
After a couple of weeks, we resumed the wet food since our dog seemed to have recovered and then shortly thereafter tried the dry food. Once again, she began exhibiting similar symptoms. We immediately stopped the dry food and she appeared to recover. I have sent a letter to Royal Canin asking if they had changed the formula or if possibly the bag was contaminated. I enclosed some kibble from the bag stamped 18 Nov 2013 12:20 R1. I haven't heard back from Royal Canin yet. The dry food is, for now, permanently sealed.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone here for posting your experiences regarding Royal Canin. This has helped me understand the reason for two of my cats having diarrhea, one had severe, explosive diarrhea and has still not fully recovered (close to a month). I stopped feeding my cats this prescription pet food. I have been making homemade food for them anymore. I find that 75% meat goes well with them. Having read so much online of late regarding what is put in pet food, I will no longer feed any of my cats any more pet food.
My recipe that I make for my cats is this. Boiled chicken thighs, I then take the bones out, but any boneless chicken is fine. Then, I add some brown rice and oat meal to the broth and boil this until it is reduced. Sometimes, I will even add ground turkey. When this is finished, I add the boneless chicken back and let it cool off. I then add a bit of brewer's yeast granules and a bit of wheat germ. The non-meat ingredients should only be at 25%.
I will never feed my cats any commercially prepared cat food again. Just because a company states that it was made in the USA, they can legally do this using ingredients from China. In addition, euthanized animals and all other kinds of waste are put in pet food. Many animals are now sick and many are dead because of this.

My three-year old exotic short-hair cat became extremely ill. On Sunday afternoon, I bought a new bag of Royal Canin Special 33. On the bag was a sticker that said: New Look/New Formula, Best By/CAD 10 NOV 2013 09:21 R5 (on bottom of bag).
I gave it to her right away, and by the next day she didn't quite seem herself. By Monday afternoon, she had violent diarrhea, and by that evening she just sat in one spot and looked miserable. She couldn't even lie down on her stomach, so she just sat in agony. By 2 AM on Monday, I realized that she was not getting any better, so I took her to the ER and they gave her fluids and anti-inflammatory/antibiotics. I thought it might be the "new formula", so I called Royal Canin and they said that they did not add any new ingredients, only took two out. The next day there was no improvement. She would not eat or drink. By 11 PM that night, I took her to an emergency vet hospital where they ran every blood and urine test imaginable, along with x-rays and two abdominal scans. She stayed the night with IV fluids, pain meds and antibiotics.
Long story short - they could not find any disease-related problems. The only thing they found were conducive to digesting something contaminated. She is an indoor cat; we have no other pets, and the only thing she ate was the food. $2000 later, I took her home, and by today, Thursday, she is 100% better, eating non-stop (a special prescription diet) and running around. Of course, I reported all of this to Royal Canin and they seemed very concerned and told me that they have never had a "recall". Obviously not, because after reading all of these posts, I feel that their food must definitely have serious problems. Please be careful.

We've been feeding the cat the Medi-Cal calorie control wet and dry food since March (this is December), with only slight signs of weight loss. We picked up another case of cat food at the vet about 2 weeks ago and noticed the change in packaging. We asked about it and was told that there was a change of ownership and packaging, but that it was the same food. It was now called Royal Canin. My cat sniffed the wet food and went for the dry food. When the dry food was gone, he went back to the wet food. Shortly thereafter, he started throwing up - at night on the bed, during the day on the couch, outside on the grass.
I happened to have an empty can in the recycle of the original stuff and compared the ingredients. Both had pork byproducts as the main ingredient and water sufficient for processing (normal). The main difference seems to be that the wheat gluten in the original has been replaced with rice flower. Either my cat is allergic to rice flower, the "rice flour" is tainted or maybe it's another instance of whatever that stuff China put in cat food in 2007. I'm calling my vet tomorrow to ask for another brand of calorie control.

I fed my dog with RC for the past years. My dog died of Hemangiosarcoma two weeks ago, which I understand has risen dramatically in this country. Various sources such as Wikipedia and many of the veterinarians I spoke with have little doubt that the sharp rise of this particular cancer has its roots mainly in the food and treats we feed our dogs. I understand from breeders in Europe that for example, RC in France uses dog carcasses (with the unabsorbed toxins) and finely shredded car tires in their dry dog food as fillers. These giant corporations are acting out of greed with no sense of ethics and moral obligation towards their consumers and their pets. They advertise that their dog food products are "wholesome and nutritious" - which is clearly stretching the truth and here is why:
So far there have been 34 dog and cat food recalls and safety alerts by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2012, 20 pet food recalls in 2011 and 24 pet food recalls in 2010 - not to mention the additional recalls by the US Animal Health Foundation and several veterinarians. The reason for these recalls are bacteria, salmonella, poisons such as thorium dioxide (Thorotrast), vinyl chloride and arsenic - which are blamed on the spread of Hemangiosarcoma. These poisons are mainly manufactured in China and have been used in the US production of cat and dog food, which lead to recalls, safety alerts and the death of animals.
There have been several toxic poison dog treat warnings recently for example involving "Waggin Train," which is manufactured by Nestle Purina in China. These treats for dogs have led to kidney failure on hundreds of animals. Several news agencies reported that the FDA has issued three separate warnings on September 1st 2012. Does this require any further comment? As for my beloved departed friend, I personally have no doubt in my mind that he was the victim of a greedy industry which puts money ahead of health. My next dog will not be fed any of their toxic garbage. I will rather prepare the meals and treats myself and will let the CEOs of these giant corporations eat their own poisoned foods.

Blood work was okay, but when we brought him home and started him on the Royal Canin, he started acting up again. I wondered if it might be this "lot" of dog food. I started researching the net and have found several people, who are having the same issues. I returned the rest of the bag to Petco along with a note with a link to this webpage. I also gave the info to my vet. The more people who report to their vets about this, maybe we can get a recall. I personally am done with trusting dog food companies. My dog is getting boiled chicken mixed with rice and broccoli from here out.

I purchased a new bag of Royal Canin Yorkshire 28. Our yorkie has been on this brand for almost one year with no problems until now. Upon his morning feeding from the new bag, he spent the entire day vomiting. He was feeling better that evening and no longer vomiting. I fed boiled chicken and rice that evening and the next morning to ensure his stomach remain settled. He had no more vomiting until that next evening when I fed him his meal from the same new bag of Yorkshire 28. Within 20 minutes, he was vomiting again.
I contacted the company via email this evening and am waiting to hear back from them tomorrow. I was concerned enough to search the internet to see if there had been a recall on the product. I didn't find any information about current recalls but did find this website with several other pet owners who experienced something similar. I hope to get some answers from the company. I won't be feeding this food anymore. At this point, I can't prove the food is the cause of my pet's stomach issues but I won't take any more chances. The fact that he never had any vomiting after feedings until eating from this new bag (twice) makes me very nervous. I am very disappointed because up until now I was satisfied with this product.

I fed two of my Persians, one Himalayan and Shih Tzu dog this food. After a while, they all began having horrible diarrhea and vomiting. The Himalayan ate only the dry food, the others preferred more wet. One of the Persians also vomited blood. The Himalayan began to have a rapid heartbeat and stopped eating. I took him to the vet where he had to have emergency surgery to remove a blockage. He also had crystals. I looked up Royal Canin. He had the same symptoms as 2007 recall. He was there for a week. I brought him home 3 pounds lighter and he still could not urinate well.
A few days later, he was in extreme pain and brought him to the emergency clinic - more antibiotics and pain medicine. I brought him home and he was okay for about a week and then took him for a re-check. The vet had to do another emergency surgery to remove scar tissue that was preventing urination. 2 days later, I brought him to another emergency clinic where his genital and back leg area began necrotizing. I had to put him to sleep. This was an extremely healthy cat until I began feeding him the Special #33 sensitive diet for cats. I have had 5 previous Himalayan and Persian cats who lived to be 18-21 years.
I am the best caregiver possible. This food needs to be recalled immediately. I spent over $2,000.00 and my cat suffered an extraordinarily painful last month of his life and a horrific death! I have pictures and documentation of everything!

Our two cats have been on Techni-Cal Indoor Urinary Health dry cat food for a few years. The smaller of the two suddenly became very ill with excessive vomiting, pain, diarrhea, etc. We rushed her to the vet and she was hooked up to an IV for 2 days. Multiple x-rays, blood and urine tests were all done. The results showed enteritis through her intestines. She is an indoor cat and did not eat any plants. The only thing that we can pinpoint is a new bag of food that had been opened the day prior. Our other cat had a slight reaction, but not as severe as our little cat. She is at home now, but is very ill, has blood in her stool and is lethargic. Upon doing some online research, I have noticed this has happened to others over the past few months. I have three chihuahuas. I have been feeding Royal Canin Weight Control and Xtra Small 12+. We have been satisfied until just recently, when I opened a new bag. Since then, all three of my tiny babies have been having bouts of vomiting and diarrhea! Everything has just started happening since I bought new bags last month! Even the shape of the food is a little different too. At first, my little chubby one, who eats the diet kind, did not want to eat it. He loved it until I bought that new bag! He has been spitting up, having diarrhea and he's been trying to eat grass when he goes outside! My tiny, elderly one has spit up several times, had diarrhea and has had days where he just doesn't want to eat at all! One night, he appeared to be having constipation, when he finally was able to go. There were traces of blood in his stool! And our tiny girl, who is just two years old, we rescued her off the street recently, she really liked the diet food too, even though she doesn't need it. We do try to get her to eat her food, but she always ends up getting into the other dogs food anyway. It's hard to feed three dogs three different kinds of food. She also has just started spitting up and having diarrhea too!
People, something is going on with some kind of new ingredient or new formula or something! From most of these reviews, things were fine until everyone bought newer bags in the last few months! Even their packaging has been updated. Something is changing with this company! We have to try to be heard before hundreds more people actually have to find out and risk their beloved pets health too! My pets are family. I loved them enough to buy this food in the first place because it was highly recommended for them. Now, I have to save them from it!

After a month of the diet and more frequent pit stops and encouraging more water, all crystals disappeared. As we made it through the first quarter of her second bag, one day, she became slightly lethargic and began vomiting through the night. I brought her to the vet and the first thing they noticed was a high fat content in her blood serum (A few months ago before starting her food, her blood work was flawless). I am waiting to hear from the vet tomorrow and suspect to hear bad news about her triglycerides, etc. She just pooped and it is clay-colored and pasty. This is a sign of acute liver failure. I agree with the two recent reviewers. There is something going on with the Royal Canin Renal LP cat food. She was switched to the Renal LP last year and she has had diarrhea on and off. But since she was on the specialty brand, her kidney issues did not progress, so I stuck with it. However, I opened up a new bag for my cat that I bought in April and she started having severe diarrhea and stomach pains and was extremely agitated. I've had her on antibiotics for over a week and the poor thing still is not well. She keeps throwing up everything and is still agitated. I had x-rays and tests done, but they couldn't find anything physically wrong - no bowel obstruction, no bladder infection, no crystals - so I really think it's the food. The vet test totaled over $1,000. The two cats living were given three types of antibiotics each for over a month. Finally, we were so upset at our cats having this explosive diarrhea and worried tremendously about the long term effects to their organs, we found this website, read similar stories and stopped the Royal Canin immediately. I put them on Blue Buffalo canned cat food, and now their diarrhea has disappeared after about two weeks on the new food. The explosive diarrhea stopped immediately though.

I took him to the vet for his first exam and asked the vet for advice on the best puppy food I should be feeding him (the breeder was feeding him Kirkland brand puppy food). She immediately pushed and recommended either Hills Science Diet or Royal Canin. I chose Royal Canin because it had small breed puppy food specifically made for the Yorkshire terrier breed. Within the first 5 days of slowly mixing the RC food with his old food, he started having severe issues with constipation. He would try to go forever with no relief. I was so worried the poor little guy was going to die of an obstruction.
I immediately took him off the RC and started feeding his old food. I went to the vet today, and she still swears by RC. She told me that she wouldn't recommend any other food other than Science diet because other foods are not tried, tested or held to the same standards at RC and SD. What is going on? My other dogs receive premium organic along with home cooked food and I always felt bad that Jack, my liver shunt dog, had to eat something not as nutritious.
Anyway, about six weeks ago, he started to pick around the kibble and eat everything else. When he did ingest the kibble, he would violently throw up about 30 minutes to one hour later. I thought that maybe something else was going on and still gave it to him and he would continue to vomit. Then he just refused to eat it all, wouldn't even want to sniff it. I couldn't get him to eat anything for two days.
I took him to the vet and about $750 later, I started cooking for him. It's a pain but we are ten days into his new diet, he is eating like a little piggy and no vomiting whatsoever and acting normal again. I offered him the RC again, he will take a quick sniff from a distance and move away. Needless to say, I tossed the rest of the bag and I’m looking for another permanent replacement that will give him the nutrition he needs for his liver issues. Obviously, something is very wrong with this batch of dog food. On a side note, I do not rely on any vets anymore when it comes to the nutritional needs of my dogs, unless they have taken the time to educate themselves about the importance of what to feed your pet and how it correlates with specific health issues that they may have.

My 12-year old cat has been on Royal Canin Urinary SO-Feline Dry Food for 5+ years to help the formation of crystals in his urethra, which has kept him hospitalized and in serious condition for over a week before. At that time, the vet placed him on this food, saying that this was the only food that would viably keep the urinary crystals from re-forming.
A 20-lb bag generally feeds my cat for 4-5 months. Recently, when I started serving from a new bag, he would snub the food even though he appeared to be starving, and then when he would finally sparingly eat from the new batch, he would throw up and gag 30 minutes or so after trying to eat it! I cannot get a straight answer regarding whether the formula has changed or what is going on.
The vets I have consulted have no record of a formula change or any similar complaints. I have taken my cat to the vet two times now to have him checked out and there is no apparent reason he is suddenly refusing the new bag of food. I purchased yet a second bag from another batch (a different expiration date) and still get the same results. The vet also had me try the Royal Canin Urinary SO-Feline, wet canned food. After a few days, my baby is throwing up again!
The vet says the introduction of any other food is going to lead to the urinary crystals re-forming. Meanwhile my cat alternates between starving to death and bouts of heaving up the food. I am so frustrated and do not know what to do!

I am a foster parent for an animal adoption group in Houston, Texas. I have fostered hundreds of cats over the last 5 years feeding various brands and formulas trying to find a food that worked well for all of the cats in my care. Several years ago I thought that I had found the right food. That food used to be Royal Canin, but no longer. I will never trust this brand of food again. In September several of my foster cats came down with diarrhea. Since I foster a lot of cats and there is a constant change-over in my house, the vet and I suspected that there was a parasite that did not show up in a fecal sample. We treated for various parasites and continued to get negative fecal results as more of the cats became affected. Finally around Thanksgiving, the vet decided we needed to throw in the towel and send off for a lab fecal to see what was actually going on since nothing we tried had any success.
During this entire time I was feeding my foster cats Royal Canin food. Because of the age of the cats I was feeding Baby Cat, Kitten and Indoor Adult formulas. When the lab report came back for Clostridium Botulinum the vet did not think there was a reason to change the cats' food since the problem started back in September. We continued to feed the cats Royal Canin food and started them on Clavamox, then Clindamycin to resolve the diarrhea issue. Several days after starting treatment, I opened a new bag of both the kitten and adult formulas and the diarrhea got much worse and many of the cats started projectile vomiting about 30 minutes after eating their breakfast and dinner. I immediately stopped using the Royal Canin food and switched them to another food without making the normal slow transition.
The cats were on the recommended course of antibiotics but only half of them had shown any improvement. We did another lab fecal that came back with a negative result so we began treating with probiotics hoping that would resolve the issue and return some good bacteria to their GI tracts. After several weeks there was no improvement so my vet called the vet at the testing lab to see what else might be going on. It was decided that we should treat for another bacteria, Campylobacter which the lab said was hard to test for. The cats were started on a 3-week course of Baytril. I have another week on the Baytril and to date I still have 3 cats with extreme diarrhea that has not resolved.
About the time I opened the last bags, I was communicating with several other fosters in our group who were also feeding Royal Canin and they too had problems with vomiting on the new shipment. These fosters have also stopped using Royal Canin and have switched to foods manufactured by other companies. Their cats vomiting issues resolved almost immediately when they changed food. In retrospect, I have realized that there has been a problem with the Royal Canin food for most of 2010. I bottle feed orphaned kittens and had more post-weaning diarrhea than I have ever experienced in prior years. I have always weaned the bottle babies onto Royal Canin Baby Cat because the kibble is very small. In past years the transition has been fairly successful with most litters either not getting diarrhea or having a very mild case of it. My foster kittens have also suffered from a lack of weight gain this year which I now realize was caused by the Royal Canin food as well. Additionally, I had several kittens who refused to eat the Royal Canin food which has never happened in previous years. I will never go back to using Royal Canin again and suggest that if you are using their product, you seriously consider using another product. At this point I have no idea what the long-term effects of the prolonged diarrhea would be on these foster kitties.

It is indeed a pleasure for me to join these voices against this company. I had cats since I was a girl, we're a cats lover's family, so I had a lot of experience caring this fabulous animal. My complaint is against a product, which is commercialized here in Ecuador as Fit 32. I have a rag doll and I've been feeding him with this product for almost a year. Before that, my cat was fed with Persian, and Sensible 33 (Royal Canin made in France) and everything was okay.
Right now my poor cat has a serious dental disease, he had been at the clinic twice for deep dental prophylaxis and lost one fang. His dental condition is critical; he is in danger to lose more teeth.
I have to say that I have been a Royal Canin customer for many years because, at the beginning, the food was made in France and was a top quality product, but since this brand manufactured their product in Argentina, my problems began. It's just not fair that we as customers trust our pets in one brand and at the end of the day, this brand betrays us in this vicious way.
My sister has the same problem, she switched from Sensible 33 to Fit 32 because the distributor in Guayaquil had problems with the imports of the sensible formula and that was the only one available (Fit 32). The result after 3 bags of 7 kilos each? Her 3 cats: 2 Siamese and one Persian have the same problem as mine! It is definitely the food. I must say Royal Canin just lost a many years customer. I'll spread my voice for any media available for me informing this problem.

We've used Royal Canin products for our cats for some years and recently, (2009-2010) we have noted our cats went off their usual flavors e.g., Siamese 38, Oral Sensitive, even the kittens went off RC Kitten. We settled on a mix of Kibbles like Special 33 and Selective 35. However, our cats always had digestive issues even with these. Luckily, we always complemented their foods with feline nutritional supplements, just in case. Now, RC just suddenly pulled their selective 35 product and replaced it with a trio of products which our cats will not touch.
After reviewing this site for RC complaints, we feel that the company is not being straight with consumers about their product selective 35 Kibble and the real reason why they pulled it. In fact, we are reviewing our cat's health notes with the horror stories here.
As a result we are removing Royal Canin from our list, we are returning all used and unused products, and we are going to spread the word to vets about if a cat has problems, to ask if they are on RC diets and to remove them from the diet. We have written to RC and told them that we believe their company is on the downward slope like a menu foods. Pet food companies in general are not to be trusted but no company suddenly pulls a selling Kibble without a serious problem they are not revealing. We thought that the company was just pulling a slick marketing move, but instead we believe the company is hiding serious cat Kibble problems.
We will never return to Royal Canin and urge all customers who relied heavily on this company to rethink their pet food strategies. This weekend, I went back to the vet and they now have a veterinarian Kibble diet to try to reverse mal-digestive issues and we are home cooking the wet until we get a new wet food they will eat. The problem we see is that Royal Canin had a good reputation, and so many of us have relied too heavily on that and until more cats die, this perception that "Royal Canin" is the go-to gold standard of pet food will not change.
Please everyone, reconsider using any RC's products; it's like Russian Roulette, it's just a matter of time. We feel that the only reason our cats did not get really ill or die is that we supplemented heavily with nutritional supplements. Cat's have been low-grade sick for all of 2010. Now, I suspect that the RC products were chiefly responsible for this. Our kittens may never ever have a healthy adult life.

I have been a breeder for 32 years and have specialized in Japanese Bobtails for the last 25 years. I used Royal Canin for many years in the 90's and eventually switched over to Purina when Royal Canin changed their formula and the main ingredient became a grain. Last year, I learned that the product had been reformulated and the main ingredient in some formulas is now chicken or turkey. So, I began using Royal Canin again exclusively in November of 2009. Since that time, I have had six experienced queens miscarry their litters, have premature births and stillborns. I have never had a female deliver early since I began breeding Japanese Bobtails in 1985.
Since I have begun using Royal Canin food, I have now had six proven and experienced queens lose their entire litters. The first one occurred in December. My female delivered a litter of six about 10 days early. The second one occurred in January. Another of my proven females delivered early and lost a litter of four. In May, I had one female deliver a litter of four early and I had another female deliver a litter of three early. In June, I had a female deliver two kittens early. And my final litter in July consisted of a total of four kittens--two kittens delivered early, one properly developed, and the other was underdeveloped. It looked like it had arrested its development approximately two weeks before delivery. This female then had two additional kittens on her due date--one was full term and the other had also arrested development prior to the birth and had a severe skull deformity.
It is not possible that these kittens were bred at different times since the mother was only bred on one day by the sire. All of these females were healthy and had at least 3 previous litters. Most of them routinely have had litters of 5-6 kittens. I have never had any of them deliver early, have a stillborn or lose a kitten. None of these females are over the age of 4. No other factor, environmental or otherwise has changed in my cattery. None of these females were sick prior to or during their pregnancies. The only factor that has changed in my cattery is the food.
And while I have completely stopped the food approximately two months ago, I just went through the heartbreak of another early delivery with premise, stillborns and deformed kittens. Whatever was in the food is obviously having some residual effect. Japanese Bobtails are an extremely hard to breed and it is incomprehensible to me that I have lost 23 kittens since December. I am convinced that Royal Canin food is toxic or at least the bags that I have gotten have been. I have the SKU numbers from all the bags that I have purchased from vendors or online and I am convinced that something in this food has caused the problems I've had. I cannot prove it and I am not a veterinarian.
I wrote to Royal Canin and got a call from Melinda **** who is a Veterinarian there. I discussed the entire situation with her. She asked if I had had necropsies done on any of the premature kittens. I told her that I had not as necropsies are very expensive and I could not afford to have that done. This veterinarian asked me what brand of Royal Canin I had used and I told her Royal Canin Special 33. She told me that this food isn't listed to be used for pregnant and lactating cats. I told her that was ridiculous. A well-balanced adult formula food should not be toxic to a pregnant cat or her kittens. She asked me for a sample of the food as I still have some left from my last bag.
She told me that the Service Center would call me to make arrangements to get the sample food from me. The next day the service center called me and asked if they could have my permission to talk to my veterinarian. I told them that I hadn't had necropsies done on my cats and that none of my females had been sick so there really was nothing the veterinarian could tell her except to give her a reference on my cattery and the animals I routinely produce and ship off. At that point, I decided that I did not trust them as they appeared to only trying to cover themselves. So I told them they did not have permission to talk with my veterinarian and that I no longer had any faith that they could be objective and that I would not be sending a sample to them.
I also called and left a message for Dr. **** that I was extremely annoyed by the Service Center's lack of sensitivity and that I did not trust that Royal Canin will be objective about this situation or that their testing of my food sample will be objective. So I planned to go to the USDA to have my food sample tested and also take whatever legal action I could. I also told them that I would no longer discuss anything with them by phone. All future communications with them would be in writing. I would really like to approach this situation with an attorney but I don't know of one in the Denver area who would take my case on a contingency basis. I also don't know if I have enough evidence to have a legitimate cause of action. I have been a professional breeder for 32 years now and I have good records of what happened with these litters but most experienced breeders don't run to the veterinarian with birthing problems, especially if no one is sick. After producing over 800 kittens and hundreds of litters in the last 32 years, I have found that I often have more experience with cat reproduction than the Veterinarian does.
And frankly, it didn't occur to me until after this happened several times that it could be the food. At that point, it was too late to take in babies for necropsy. I have considered trying to do an analysis of the last queen's blood to try to determine what might be causing the problem. But those kind of detailed toxicological tests are not readily available in my area and they are expensive. Plus, there is a good chance that if the problem was caused by an incorrect level of some ingredient, vitamin or mineral that is water-soluble, there may no longer be any evidence of it in the cat's blood. I don't even know if the last bag of Royal Canin that I used was the problem or not.
This is the only bag I have a sample from. I don't know what else I can do. I do plan to share my experiences with other breeders because someone needs to be spared this heartbreak. And the reason I'm so convinced that it is the food that caused my problems is that I took two females and fed them only Purina in March and had two successful litters, one of six and the other of three kittens. And one of these females was the same one who lost her litter of six in December while on Royal Canin Food. She was rebred to the same male and had a healthy litter of six in March.
Conservatively, since I generally sell my kittens for $700/each on average, my consequences are roughly $16,000 in the loss of 23 kittens. Show quality kittens are priced at $1200-$2000 but there is no way to really know how many of those kittens would have been show quality. On average 1 in 4 are show quality based on previous experience. So that is another $3000-$8000 in lost income. I really need help on figuring out how I can approach this legally or a referral to an attorney who specializes in animal welfare or tainted food in my area who can advise me. I also need to know if there is any class action against Royal Canin at this time or contemplated. I would like to join it or start one.

This is an update on the complaint I filed back in Dec. 2009. After bad problems with Royal Canine puppy food and not knowing where to turn, my friend suggested Bil Jac. I called the rep and was very impressed with what he had to say about their food. In a 15 lb bag of puppy food, there is 10 pounds of fresh chicken from American farms, corn from American farmers, no rice or other things from China. All American grown and made.
He said I could switch immediately to their food with no bad affects and he was right. I had to switch instantly and they were fine. After all this time, I am very impressed. I would recommend this food to anyone. I have finally found a dog food I can trust to feed my babies and not worry. Things could always happen but I feel confident that this is the best food around. Give it a try.

I'm a dog lover & owner for last few years. I'm also an uninterrupted customer of your product for last 3-4 years. Every month, I purchase at least 40-45 kg premium food from your company Royal Canin.Your food is too good, that's why I'm paying for it & its true that now I'm totally habituated with your food. I can't think any thing as a substitute of your food despite the fact that there are so many other companies in our country as you know better than me that India is a growing market of the world.
But it's very much unfortunate for me that I'm removing all my beloved dogs from my kennel because I said earlier that I can't think of anything except your product but I'm the last person to compromise with your distributor who is in Kolkata. Mr. ** is a nice man but unfortunately he has no control to his business & Mrs. ** who is the key person of the business, can't run the show with her behavior. Her behavior is too bad. In this matter, please don't trust me. It's better that you should make a market survey among the breeders and I'm sure you'll feel that Royal Canin is losing its business for that distributor. I'm sure about it that 100% customers are dissatisfied with the distributor.
Yesterday, at about 1:30 pm, she called me over the phone & said, "You have a outstanding of last bill worth Rs.7897. You should pay it now." I told her that now I'm not in my house, so to please come tomorrow but she did not agree and started shouting then I was bound to pay her from my wife's bank account. I have no record of credit of long time. That's why, not only I, but my family is also very much depressed with her behavior, what she did yesterday.
With an upset mind, I am requesting you, to please change your distributor and make your customers happy. She thinks that the Royal Canin is running for her, but she doesn't know that she is for Royal Canin.

I have 3 cats that have gotten sick on Royal Canin Renal LP- Modified C dry cat food (7 lb. bag). The cats couldn't keep the food down, vomited several times each. I don't know the far-reaching effects of using this cat food, but am now worried I have inadvertently damaged my cats' health in some way.

I started using the Royal Canin Selective 35/30 for my Siamese cat. After many tries with other foods, this was all he would eat. It said it was for fussy eaters. My cat is now 14 mos old, and Ive been feeding him that food exclusively for approx 10mos. I noticed my cat vomiting his food, not completely digested after a few hours of eating it. Then his coat started to become dull and sparse. He was constantly scratching; he developed a bald spot on his head. After 3 times to the vet, the vet said it must be allergies to his food. This food has corn gluten in it. Cats don't digest corn. I am so upset. I thought I was feeding my cat the very best. I will warn others about this food also.

My two 3-year old purebred Siamese cats recently died from complications from a condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The treating veterinarian cardiologist said this condition is very rare in cats because it is caused by a diet deficient in the amino acid Taurine and all commercial cat foods are required by the FDA to contain sufficient levels of Taurine. The cardiologist tested my cat's blood to determine their level of Taurine. The tests results indicated they were critically deficient in Taurine. My cats had been on an exclusive diet of Royal Canin's Green Peas & Rabbit Feline Formula for approximately two years. The veterinarian cardiologist then had me bring in a sample of their food to be tested for Taurine levels. The food was tested by the Amino Acid Lab at the UC Davis School of Veterinarian Medicine. The Taurine levels in the food were found to be a fraction of the level required by the FDA.
The cardiologist tried contacting Royal Canin in St. Charles, MO several times, but Royal Canin did not return his phone calls. I then tracked down the technical director and explained the situation. I provided all the medical records for my cats and the lab results on their food from UC Davis. They denied that anything was wrong with their food but offered to pay a fraction of my veterinarian expenses. I demanded that they pay all related expenses and recall their cat food. They refused. I then filed a complaint with the FDA and as far as I know it is still an active complaint being investigated. I also discovered that another cat being treated by my cats' primary veterinarian died within the same time frame from eating Royal Canin's cat food. All cat owners who feed Royal Canin cat food to their cats need to be notified!

My cat was diagnosed with renal failure nearly three years ago. The vet recommended putting her on a wet food for cats with renal failure. The only food she will eat is the Royal Canin Modified Formula. Recently, Royal Canin told the vet they changed the label (from yellow to blue) but the formula was the same. Not only can I tell from looking at it that the new LP formula is different, but my cat won't eat the new formula or any other food made for cats with renal failure. The result is my cat’s health is now declining, because she doesn't have the proper food to eat. I can't understand why Royal Canin would make this change and say that it is the same product when it obviously is not.
