My beloved family pet is in vet hospital right now fighting for his life with pancreatitis. Reading these reviews on Purina products disgusts and angers me greatly. My buddy Banjo is a 2 and 1/2 year old mini Schnauzer. He has always been a happy, active pet. About 2 weeks ago, he started showing signs like vomiting just bile, black diarrhea and just an overall lethargy with shivering and excessive thirst. For the past week, he would not eat anything at all and was losing weight. Being recently separated and cut to a very low pay by company, I have been living with my mother on an extremely fixed income so we're trying everything we could to not bring him into the vets and having it cost us money we just don't have. Him being part of our family and us loving him very much made the decision to bring him in to the vet a necessity.
X-rays after x-rays and blood work, and finally exploratory surgery, they found he was dying with pancreatitis. Now he is struggling for his life and all I can think about is how I thought I was doing him good feeding him Alpo made by Purina instead of cheap **, when all the while it is the reason he's where he is now. The fact that this company knows their product is killing their consumers' friends and family members and they are too greedy and heartless to even find out why, not to mention pulling this poison off the shelves to stop this slaughter, sickens and angers me beyond any anger I have ever felt. I believe that these greedy ** should pay for what they are doing instead of profit. I can't afford a lawyer or even these vet bills, but I will not stop lobbying to see something done about this. Are they just dogs or cats? Or are they loved family members? Help fight with me please?

I had read all of this when I filed my complaint with Purina and ended up dealing with Sedgwick. I was angry that my dog fell ill after I changed him to Purina One and Alpo a couple of weeks prior after feeding Chef Michael's for years. I have to say that Jennifer ** was very professional in her dealings, even when I was angry and confrontational. To my surprise, I received a call from her last week and she was able to resolve the issues I had when my beloved Yorkie and his daughter fell ill. The only thing that is still outstanding is having Purina send for the food samples to check. I truly understand the anger when my dog almost died and couldn't stand up or walk but I have to say give them a chance. Without a team effort, we couldn't have dealt with this.

I gradually switched my dog's food from Nature's Recipe Lamb and Rice to Purina One Smartblend Lamb and Rice on Friday, March 16, 2012. By Thursday, March 22, 2012, she was vomiting and stopped eating. On Friday the 23rd, she continued to vomit bile, fluids and blood. The vet diagnosed her with possible pancreatitis. Her amylase and lipase blood results exceeded the linearity range of their analyzer. She will remain on IV therapy until she can keep the food down and her blood results go back to normal. Hopefully, that will occur tomorrow.
Purina products will never make it into my home again. I hate to see animals suffer and I would rather make my dog fresh chicken and rice soup every day than take a chance on another dog food again. If her pancreas isn't destroyed, I can maybe put her back on Nature's Recipe, which is a brand that I can trust.

My Scotties and Westies ranging from 5-10 years have been eating Purina One Lamb & Rice for 7 years. Up until now, they have been healthy dogs. I have trusted Purina for over 40 years. Recently in June of 2011, they changed the formula to Smart Blend. After that I began having various problems with my dogs. Please let me add that they eat no table scraps or any other food, just strictly this formula. They are indoor dogs and do not have access to free range to roam off of our property, it is all fenced in and controlled.
My Sophie became lethargic, depressed, drinking and urinating a lot. I took her for a workup. She had developed kidney failure that rapidly progressed. Despite all efforts and 3 months later, she died on 3/21/2012. She had had blood testing done 2 years prior had no problems. I also have more than one with loose bowels and blood in stool 2 of them I just took in to be checked fecal and exam done no parasites, etc. One of those has blood in his urine and bladder is greatly enlarged. They are doing exploratory on him this week. The urinalysis came back inconclusive. No more Purina food ever for any of my pets. We are also removing Horse, Goat and Chickens off of Purina foods.

The Healthy Morsels dog food’s bag was not sealed at the bottom. I left Wal-Mart with it and got ready to carry it in the house. Then, the bottom came loose and dumped the dog food on the ground. It was wet outside, so most of the food was ruined.

I have been feeding my dogs Purina Dog Chow for years and have not had any problems. Within the last two months, I started feeding my black lab Purina One with Glucosamine in it because his joints were starting to slow him down and he is hurt. He started feeling better and started to play with my younger female black lab a lot more and he was not crying when he laid down or got up. I was happy because I thought I would get a few more years out of him. He was 11.
He started to get constipated and I thought it was because I changed his food, so I mixed his food with milk and it helped. Then he started to not be able to walk very well and his back legs would not support him. I noticed a lump by his tail and the worse it would get, the harder it was for him to walk. That weekend, March 9th through March11, he started crying at night after we went to bed. He was in bad shape on that Saturday, so my wife took him to the vet and they said that he had herniated his intestine and everything he ingested was going into his body because it was leaking out of his digestive tract. It was an impossible surgery to do because it would have paralyzed him, so the vet told my wife to tell me to enjoy the little time I had left with him.
That Sunday morning at about 4:00 am, he woke us up with his crying and I lay down for a few hours with him until I was in tears because he was hurting so bad. We had to take him to the emergency clinic and have him put down. That was the worst thing I have ever had to deal with and it broke my heart.

My 12-year-old healthy indoor cat died today at Cornell, after as yet unexplained multiple problems that started last week. My other cat is currently inpatient at our local vet, and the 3rd cat has been vomiting at home. The cats' blood tests showed very low protein and potassium and possibly liver and heart problems. I started using Purina ONE urinary dry food about 2 months ago, as the cat still at home has a urinary problem (rather than buy the very expensive urinary food the vet recommended). Now, as I am reading the other postings, I recognize the symptoms. Hopefully, my 2 remaining cats will recover.

My 3 and a half year old dog almost died last week due to a disease we never heard before - HGE. Combined with possible Pancreatitis, it was something that caught us completely off guard. We come home from work to find a ton of blood in his stool. We rush him to the vet. He is severely dehydrated, his red blood cell count is high, he isn't eating, he’s lethargic, and we were scared out of our minds. Both my dogs were on a Purina Pro Plan diet, both hard and soft food (salmon).
We come home from the store one day with a new bag of the hard food and neither of our dogs wanted to eat it. We thought nothing of it, thought they were just being finicky so sat down with them and fed it to them by hand. The next day, they refused to eat it at all. Their breakfast bowls were full when we got home from work. So we made them dinner (chop meat and rice).
The next day, my dog had the blood in his stool, only a day after eating the food from the new Pro Plan. Thankfully, my other dog didn’t get sick, but he too didn't like whatever was in that new bag. Reading all of the complaints, there just can't be this much of a coincidence that something is wrong with their food. Something is going on at their factory that is causing the food to become tainted with something. It almost caused my dog to die! I pray there is a recall soon and the company gets down to the bottom of this issue fast before more pets are harmed!

Things started about 2 months ago. We noticed our little cockapoo, Sayuri, started throwing up and had become lethargic. But since it was right around the new year, we figured it was the weather and switched her off Purina Pro Plan to chicken and rice. As soon as she was better, we had her back on her dog food. Then suddenly in the second week of February, she stopped walking, we couldn't figure out what happened. Literally, from one day to the next, she just stopped walking and she would yelp whenever I pick her up. Right away, we took her to the vet because up until then, she was a very healthy, happy dog. She was a jumper so I asked for x-rays, thinking she hurt herself but they found nothing wrong. The vet thought maybe it was change of season and early onset of arthritis, so she gave me some Trimadol and we went home.
I found that she wasn't getting better, just knocked out all day, so I took her off the meds after about 6 days and started giving her baby aspirin once a day for about a week. She was lucid, but couldn't really move and I noticed she wasn't wanting to eat. When I noticed she wasn't eating, but drinking a lot of water, I got more worried. So I took her back to the vet. The vet this time noticed she had a broken tooth and thought maybe that is what was wrong. They ran blood work in case there was an infection and more x-rays. Again, nothing. The blood labs didn't show signs of an infection and the x-rays came back normal. Again, the vets were stumped. They did show low glucose and sodium, but the vet said it was probably from the dehydration. They did the physical test and she noticed her neck seemed to be causing her stress as well. They gave me a liquid steroid and antibiotic.
Right away, I started to see signs of hope. Slowly, Sayuri was able to walk a little, then a little further everyday, we saw little signs of promise. She even began to eat wet food (also Purina Pro) and drinking more water. Suddenly, on day 6, she shut down again. She couldn't walk and she had what seemed to be a small seizure and began panting excessively, but didn't want water. Saturday, she was laying in bed all day, panting continued and I hand fed her some chicken and rice. She ate very little. But Saturday night, I noticed another seizure like spasm. I started to panic and thought maybe it was something more serious. So I googled the steroid and antibiotic, but neither had seizures associated with them. I researched a little more and many people said a spoonful of honey will help.
So Sunday, I gave her a spoonful of honey and had decided I would take her to the vet first thing Monday morning. The day went by the same, she laid in bed all day and I hand fed her again - chicken and rice. Again, she wasn't really even able to lift her head and I noticed she began to have nasal discharge a couple days before as well, but I had been sick and so I thought maybe I had given her my cold. By Sunday, she completely lost her ability to hold her own weight and I had to not only carry her to her pee spot, but also hold up her body while she went. The panting continued and then Sunday night, she had another seizure around 5:45PM and then again at 6:30PM. Then she had a very violent episode at around 9:45PM that made me sit right away because she screamed so loud and her tail began to spin, her legs were running in place. It broke my heart to see her. I tried to remain calm and pet her, but it was awful to watch. I didn't know what to do and decided to take her in to the emergency, once the episode passed.
I picked her up and she let me hold her. She fell asleep in my arms and I didn't want to wake her so I let her sleep. She was very peaceful and I watched the hours slowly go by. I was praying we would make it to 8AM, but we wouldn't. At 3AM, I noticed her breathing became very slow and out of her mouth. I began to panic and I noticed I could feel her heartbeat in my arms, as I had still been holding her for the last couple of hours. My screams woke the rest of the family and I had someone drive us to the emergency clinic, by the time we reached it, she had passed away in my arms. I cannot begin to tell you the pain I and my family are in. She was our little girl and had her own very strong personality. She was particular about her cheeses, mozzarella being her favorite. We used to eat together and she always slept in my bed. My mom called her her first great child and treated her with all the rewards that entails.
My older sister used to rub her paws for her because she said Sayuri must get tired from being on her hands and feet all day. Our home now has an enormous void from her absence. I wake up everyday waiting for her to leap down from the bed and beat me to the breakfast table. I have cried the whole 2 months that she was sick and I haven't stopped crying yet. I hear my mother sobbing in the shower in the mornings because Sayuri used to always lay on all the clothes and pillows and anything else that felt great. It has been exactly one week and the pain hasn't begun to cease. I miss her every single day, especially now that it is sunny. I shared her story because a good friend found this site and notified me that it sounded like the same inexplicable thing Sayuri died from.
She was only 7 and I had a whole lifetime of trips and memories yet to have, but thanks to the wonderful people at Purina our journey ended a week ago. I have racked my brain with wudda cudda shudda, but because it was a top brand dog food, it never dawned on me that it was her food. I hope and pray that more people spread the word and hopefully save the lives of our little loved ones. Nothing will ever bring back my beloved little girl, Sayuri, but I hope eventually our voices will be heard and bring a change to the dog food industry.

About 3-4 weeks ago, the cat food I have always given my 3 cats started making them throw up after eating. Thinking it was furballs, I gave them Laxatone but every time they eat, they throw up violently until all the food is out of their systems. I just noticed that the 5-year anniversary of losing another cat to the tainted cat food had just passed. I could not believe it could possibly be happening again but yesterday, I threw out the Purina One and replaced it with cat food from a health food store. My cats have stopped throwing up! I am just sick over this! Do not feed your cats Purina One!

I have been feeding my English Shepherds Purina One Lamb & Rice for at least 4 years. The oldest one has had problems with it upsetting his stomach. I even took him to the vet, and they gave him antibiotics and it finally helped. About 6 months ago, he started throwing up thick yellow stuff, then all of his food, about 3 times a week. Yesterday he started panting and acting like he was disoriented. He was not acting his normal self.
He started circling me and holding his head funny, and he would lay his head on me. I am really concerned about my dogs at this point. I have taken them off of Purina One Lamb & Rice. I know Purina has changed the formula on the dog food. I am not buying any more Purina dog food of any kind. I can't understand why Purina changed the formula anyway. I am very upset about this food. I just hope my dog gets better after changing his food.

My currently 5-month black German Shepherd Kaiser had gotten extremely ill after his normal food, which was Purina One large breed puppy chow, was discontinued without any warning. So I had to buy the SmartBlend large breed puppy food. I didn't have anything left of his other food to mix with it. After eating it, he got violent watery diarrhea with some vomiting. He started sleeping a lot and his mood changed. He started growling if anyone went near him. I called his vet, they told me to not feed him for an entire day then to feed him boiled rice and hamburger for two days and see if that helps. It did, so they told me to feed him his normal meal. Right back to how he was after his first feeding. He lost weight, which is not good for a growing puppy. The vet put him on pills to help and it did. After the pills were done, he was sick again.
The vet confirmed that his food was doing this to him and he has now been on a prescription diet, which I am in the process of changing it to Wolf Cub large breed puppy food by Solid Gold. My puppy is still not normal. I feel lucky after reading many of these reviews and reviews on other sites that my dog is not dead. My brother's dog, an 8-year old Rottie, is sick now as well and one of my cats has been sick after eating Purina products. My animals will never eat anything Purina related again. Purina told me "they have had no other complaints". I don't know if they just don't care about the problem or what, but clearly there is something wrong. I don't care about getting money for this, I do not wish to enter some lawsuit but something has to be done. Animals are dying and getting very sick.
Who knows the long-term effects if any to the animals who live? This food needs to be tested and an alert has to be put out to customers who buy any Purina products. I am telling everyone I know to stop using this food. I know it says to be accurate and fair in your comments. This is as fair as I could possibly be.

My cat has been eating Purina Cat Chow for the five years of his life. I bought this last bag at Walmart in Waterdown, ON. I noticed my cat being picky with the food, leaving some on the table that he didn't like, it seemed. He was becoming disheveled and lethargic. I stopped using this food and fed him canned food to keep up his nutrition. My son noticed him being disheveled and out of sorts as well. He seemed quite sickly. The canned food seemed to help, I made it quite liquidy, as he hadn't been drinking his water either. I have since changed to a top blend with full nutrient, not meat by-product, and he has been getting back to his usual self. I am very very upset about this and would like an explanation of what may have happened. Have there been recalls in the Hamilton/Waterdown area at Walmart or any other stores?

I have been feeding my cats with Purina Friskies tin cat food for years. About a year ago, I noticed that when I opened the tins, the food did not have that nice fresh smell to it. It didn't seem to matter what flavor it was. It all smelled the same. I can't describe the smell, but it wasn't a food smell. I always bought a lot of beef and whitefish and tuna. They do not make the beef because of problems at the border with beef now, so I stuck with the whitefish and tuna. My cat just stopped eating it. I opened a tin she took a smell and walked away from it, so I was throwing tin after tin in the garbage. I have contacted Purina a few times, and asked them if they had changed the formula for their cat food, and the agent said no, and they weren't getting any complaints about the food.
The company sent me out free coupons to replace some of the tins I threw out. It was nice of them to send me coupons, but that wasn't what I really wanted. I just wanted to find an answer to the problem. Was it the very thin tins that they were using, the storage of the tins, etc? I was concerned about the tins because if they were dropped or banged, the lid would pop. I just had a feeling that maybe the tins were contaminating the food, and was hoping someone would start investigating the problem. I am trying different brands of cat food which I find have much stronger tins. I would like to know if others are having the same problem as I am with the Friskies tin food, and has there been any recalls on cat food lately.

This is a follow-up to my original post on 2/13/12, at which time our female Brittany Spaniel, Lexie, had passed away on 1/25/12. At best, her death was due to organ failure, probably caused by a diet of Purina Pro Plan. We are assuming serious complications were brought on by Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend. We ceased feeding all kibble a week after Lexie's death. Severe complications also followed her mate, Ruskin, who had battled Cushing's disease for the past two years. Ruskin had a severe seizure during the late night hours. I was able to talk with a knowledgeable friend that guided me with administering Pedialyte & Karo Syrup. I was in contact with the vet over the weekend. Not wanting our dear pet to suffer, we were discussing having him euthanized.
I called on Monday morning to make an appointment for a pancreas test. We were looking at a full blood work-up and probably another Cushing's test, before they would singly test the pancreas because he is already identified with CD and taking meds. When he started displaying tremors, an onset of a seizure, I clipped a toenail into the quick so we could get a fast blood sample to do a Glucose Test. The result showed 84, within normal range.
Considering I had tried perking him up (to get him to the vet) using Karo Syrup & drips of Pedialyte, his glucose level before I administered sugar to him was probably in the 60's, which is low! My daughters and I wrapped him in a small comforter and I held him snug against me when he began to seize. We never made it to the vet. Ruskin died in my arms of cardiac arrest at 9:40 am, March 5, 2012, forty days after his mate died. Although we had changed their nutrition plan to a raw diet, in hindsight, we believe Ruskin had already suffered damage to his organs, especially his pancreas. He had probably become diabetic with the large amounts of sugar in the food that he consumed.
We knew the CD would eventually take his life, and very possibly was brought on because of his long term diet of Purina. Unfortunately, his body was too distressed from the sugar imbalance. We are currently monitoring our 10-year-old Brittany and 2 cats. Brittany will be having blood work done at the vet as he has not been a good candidate for home glucose testing. It is not just Purina! Type in 'pets 2012' in the search box in the upper right corner on the Consumer Affairs site, the first three pages will display complaints for popular brands. We continue to be saddened by the unnecessary sickness and loss of so many pets.

I breed Yellow Labs. My Dam, Sire and 20 month old had been eating the Purina One Smart Blend Chicken and Rice. I have always fed the puppies, while weaning and after, Purina Large Breed Puppy. The beginning of March, we couldn’t find the puppy food we usually used, only the Smart Blend Large Breed Puppy. I started feeding it to my 2 females who are 8 months old and the litter of nine who were 6 wks old, in a gradual transition. In less than a day, they all had diarrhea.
I then went to 5 different stores to find the original Purina One Large Breed Puppy and was able to find one 34 lb bag. When I opened the bag, there were all kinds of white specks and webs. I ended up throwing it out. I didn't want to make a drastic switch so I continued to feed the Smart Blend to the puppies. Now, I needed more food for the adults. I bought their usual for them, which they had always loved. They didn't like it very much. They were eating much less and not as active, not to mention some slight diarrhea. I had no choice but to put them on another brand. The litter of nine became extremely ill, diarrhea but no vomiting.
On the evening of March 9th, I returned home and went to feed the littler. Two of them looked emaciated and one of those two wouldn't even come out of the kernel for dinner and fresh water. The poor baby looked so depressed. They all still had diarrhea, some worse than others. I ended up having to take the one to the vet that Friday night because she was moaning, wouldn't eat or drink and didn't even want to have anything to do with her mother. The vet tested her for Parvo because she vomited in his office. The test came back negative (thank God!). She had a severe case of gastroenteritis and was slightly dehydrated. They gave her fluids and medication and sent her home with more medication.
I am happy to say that she, her littermates, and the two 8 mo. old are finally starting to do much better. The adults are doing well, also. I am thoroughly disappointed and disgusted in Purina's lack of concern for our family members and our voices as consumers. I feel terrible for all of you whom have lost precious members of your family. Purina offered to send me coupons, which I don't want. After a second email I sent to them, they phoned me. I have yet to return their call. I will not let this problem go. I will do what I need to for my babies and everyone else's. You are all in my prayers.

On March 20, we noticed that our 7-month-old German Shepherd puppy seemed lame/not so excitable. We called the vet and took him in to get looked at. The vet had a lyme test done and it was negative. The vet told us that he looked really good, and if possible, to increase his food. She asked what we are feeding him. We informed her that we feed him Purina Smart one large breed pup. She stated that it was a good food, but recommended that we feed him 9 cups. We followed her instructions. On 5th of March, we put him to bed in a kennel inside our house. At 2 am, we got up to make a baby bottle for our child. He was awake and checking us out. We got up at 5:30 am to get our kids ready for school. At a little before 6 am, my husband went to take him out of the kennel and he was gone.
On March 8th, we noticed our older German Shepherd, who is three, vomited a whitish foam. They suggested for us to try feeding her dog food. She wouldn’t touch it, but she went to the puppy’s food and started to eat. I called the vet and took her in to get checked out. All test results came back negative. While my hubby was with our dog at the vet, I was home and thought I contact Purina, who did tell me, “Sorry for the loss,” and they would get back to me to get a sample for testing. Then while I was waiting for my hubby to call me, I found this site. I am so worried that I could possibly lose another dog to this food. The vet suggested that we feed chicken and rice. I’m intentionally starting to cook the chicken that I have for the dog that was for dinner and will add brown rice. I’m worried sick and concerned.

My dog had to be put to sleep on Monday. He had been eating Purina One for about nine months, until we got this bag of Purina One Maturity. He started getting picky about eating it, then he developed diarrhea. I told my daughter this looks like food poisoning. We stopped feeding it to him immediately, but it was too late. He continued to have extreme diarrhea, ending with the inability to eat, bark or walk. He was in extreme distress. It was heartbreaking to realize we were watching him die. The autopsy showed no obvious signs of death, but his organs were swollen or enlarged. We are moving now to get the food tested. I hope this message reaches all pet owners who are using Purina foods. Purina knew it had a problem with contaminated food back in 2011, but they only did a limited recall.
Spread the word so other pet owners will not have to suffer what we just went through. Max meant the world to us. This is a devastating blow to us. I hope this message stops more pets from dying.

I have five cats. I started three of the cats on Purina Pro Plan about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago. The other two cats eat prescription Science Diet. After a few days on Purina Pro Plan, I noticed the three cats eating the Purina started to occasionally vomit an hour or so after eating. I assumed they were still getting used to the new food transition, despite gradually working it into their previous food (Blue Buffalo). As I increased the amount of Purina Pro Plan, the vomiting got worse. They became very lethargic, and when they did move around, they would meow constantly. This was highly unusual behavior as these are very active, 22 month old cats.
I switched them back to their previous food, and went to the FDA website to see if there was a recall on the Purina Pro Plan, which there wasn't. While researching for a possible recall, I stumbled onto this site. I have no idea what is going on with Purina pet food, but what my cats were beginning to experience sounds a lot like the symptoms described by many other pet owners. Hopefully, I got them off of the Purina Pro Plan in time. They are active again and eating/drinking normally. I have no idea what the long term ramifications may be, but for now they appear healthy.
As a side note, I went to the store (while they were on the Purina Pro Plan), and bought several cans of Fancy Feast (which they absolutely love) to try and get more fluids in them, because of the vomiting. They would not eat it! They have always gobbled up Fancy Feast. I put some Fancy Feast into a bowl and popped it into the microwave for a few seconds to try warming it a little bit to see if they would eat it. The Fancy Feast started sparking while in the microwave. I have warmed Fancy Feast many times, but have never seen that. No more Fancy Feast for me.
My heart goes out to those who lost your companions. I am reporting my experience to Purina and the FDA, just in case there is something wrong with the pet food. In the future, I’m not taking any chances. If it is made by Ralston Purina, my animals are not eating it!

My mini Schnauzer, Jake Man, passed away on Tuesday, after displaying very similar symptoms as described by many here. We changed Jake’s food approximately one month ago. The last bag we purchased, and will ever purchase, was about two weeks ago. There was a small change in his behavior, which was barely noticeable at first. He became less playful, and seemed to always want more water than normal. On Monday, he drank 6 bowls of water (unusual for him). After eating, he vomited. I was concerned, but at that time, he was still fairly normal acting. The next morning, at around 6:30, I found him still. He did not respond to my voice. Finally, after several attempts, I was able to get him to wake up. He tried to get up and walk, but his legs wobbled out from underneath him.
After several attempts to walk, he rolled to me using his head and neck muscles to do so. We immediately took him to the vet, where they diagnosed that he was severely dehydrated. They tested his kidneys, and ran several panels of blood work. The results were that he had three high levels in the kidneys that were toxic. He remained in the hospital on an IV, because he was so dehydrated. At 5:15 PM, he had his first seizure, and then his second at around 6:45 PM. Sadly, he passed away at 7:00 PM. I cannot say for sure that this was caused by the dog food, but there are several very similar stories with similar symptoms, with one common factor, being that each of these animals was eating Purina food.
Purina needs to recall their products, and figure out if the product is affecting our pets. Nothing I do can ever bring back my family friend, and pet, but these pets are family members. Jake belonged to my six year old son, who adored him. The entire family loved him. Jake was only 3 and 1/2 years old, and should never have to suffer this type of death. The label is Purina Alpo Come and Get it (new and improved grill-icious) 16 lb bag (code 50000-58090).

My 13 year old cat started vomiting and became very ill after eating Purina One Beyond cat food for a couple of days. We have spent a large amount of money at the vet to try to help him recover. I found the food I had purchased a week before was infested with worms and moths which did not come from my home! My cat's test results have not shown any problem that would cause this. I ordered a D3 test because I am wondering if the food also contained toxic levels of Vitamin D in addition to the worms and moths!

Purina One recently changed formulas to Smart Blend. After the first few days of Smart Blend, my dogs became extreme ill, vomiting and diarrhea that would not stop. I didn't think it was the food. Purina never gave us any problems in the past. Vet said that liver enzymes suggested poisoning of some sort. As a precaution, I put the dogs back on the old formula. After a few days, they got better. When we could no longer find the original formula, we tried Smart Blend again, thinking it probably wasn't the food. Within days, they were vomiting and had uncontrollable diarrhea again! We finally found a store with three bags of the original version, which we'll use to transition to another brand. After reading these posts, I feel lucky that my dogs are still alive! Something has to be done! The Smart Blend formula is obviously toxic and deadly. Please do not feed Purina One Smart Blend to your dogs!

My other cats, all of whom have been on Purina all their lives, were turning their noses up at all the food. Then, someone told me about the problems with Purina. Did I poison my cat by feeding her this food? Tomorrow, I am switching cat food brands until Purina can guarantee that their food is free of harmful effects.

So sorry to read of so many other people's losses apparently due to consumption of Purina pet food. As in my two previous posts, I too am dealing with Purina Pet Care Company's mouthpiece Sedgwick. My last contact with them was about two weeks ago, the representative told me that I could, at my own expense, have the food tested at an independent lab and the results sent to Sedgwick for "review". I was informed that under Ohio statute, the case would be open for 2 years.
In reading other posts, some of you who have also been in touch with Sedgwick have stated that they had stated that Purina would "pick up" samples of the food in question and test, although it was apparent that this was not followed through. No such offer was ever presented to me, and frankly, I wouldn't trust any so called test that was conducted by this company. How would I really know unless I sent a sample to a private lab?
I have since filed a complaint with the FDA, unfortunately, they are understaffed and in this country, there are no governing regulations for the manufacture and purity of animal food. It is up to each individual company how they perform quality control. I have researched through PETA the names of ethical pet food companies and am now feeding my two dogs and my two remaining cats Solid Gold product. This is being tolerated well by all of my pets and I am very satisfied with the ingredients in the food. For an eye opening view of the pet food industry, I suggest reading the information provided by PETA. You will be shocked at what goes into most of the lower priced commercial animal food. I see a class action in the not too distant horizon. Above all, exercise and insist on integrity in your lives and in the public domain as well that all may be blessed and the truth be known.

I posted in December 2011 that my cat suddenly became ill after eating Purina Kit & Kaboodle cat food. She had been eating that food for 8 years, oddly, a new bag (new batch) nearly took her life. She became lethargic, threw up, stopped eating, stopped drinking, and I had to make an emergency trip to a vet. Blood work, stool testing, physical exam, antibiotics, N/V drops, SC fluids were given, and Purina cat food removed from her diet. I'm lucky my cat lived, as I've read all the horrible stories of those that lost their beloved pets. My heart goes out to you all.
I contacted Purina within 24 hrs of the vet trip, and was told no complaints had been made. I spent the past 2 1/2 months with phone calls with Purina, sent them a sample of the food to test, and released my cat's vet records to them. I was informed that "nothing was detected in the food upon a visual inspection and microscopic look for mold". No chemical testing was performed on food and I was told they don't do that, but I could at my own expense. Again, Purina stated that they haven't received any other complaints made to them on Kit & Kaboodle cat food, and explained that there is any "proof" that the food caused my cat's near-death experience. In the next breath, Purina representative made me an offer to pay half of the vet bill expense incurred from the experience if I'd close my case.
In closing, I want you all to know that with every phone call I made to Purina I informed them of this website and the other complaints posted here. Each time they said they don't use this site, and that the postings I informed them about could be viewed by Purina Company as slanderous. I did my best to be making Purina aware of the problem with the cat food, but have learned the sad truth, nothing will become of our complaints. No recall is being made as there isn't any proof or evidence with the food. I don't know what else I can do except move on from this now. It's a sad situation and has caused a lot of pain to innocent pets, loving family members, and to the pet owners. I wish I could have done more, and worry about others going through this. Please know I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

My 8-year old black lab (110 #) has eaten this food (Purina One Smart Blend Chicken & Rice dry dog food) for a couple of years with no problem. I purchased a 34 # bag at Meijer’s on 2/17/12 (Meijer’s PN 1780012938). Within 5 feedings, he started vomiting and developed severe diarrhea. Now, he refuses to go near this food at all. I called Purina and talked to Emily. She told me they changed the bag only, not the formula. She said she would send me a new bag (I obviously declined) or a check for the purchase price immediately, which is a little too fast for my peace of mind.
Something is amiss with that batch! I have read many more complaints of exactly the same symptoms. Chem-Dry is coming to clean the den carpet tomorrow because of something my lab or I couldn't prevent. They cleaned as well as I could but couldn't remove all the smell and stains. Now, I'm concerned that he may have kidney or liver damage due this bad food. I would like to have this batch tested to find out what's in it. My dog has a scheduled visit with the vet for a blood workup, too.

My male tabby cat Shawnee was 5 years old. He ate Friskies pate that I bought in a wholesale club in a variety pack for 5 years. He also ate Friskies dry food, seafood sensations. Right before Christmas, I ran out of canned food and ran to the local shopping market to pick up a few cans of Friskies ocean whitefish special diet pate, salmon pate, mixed grill and a few others, just to tide us over until I could get back to the wholesale club.
After 2 days, he started urinating all over the house, drank incessantly and was not himself. He got progressively worse over the next few days and the day after Christmas, we took him to the vet. We were told by the vet that we had a very sick cat on our hands. We were devastated. He was severely dehydrated, was in kidney failure and had a bacterial infection from an organism that could have only come from tainted cat food.
$2,500 later, we had to put my baby Shawnee to sleep on February 2nd. We tried subcutaneous fluids, antibiotics, pepcid, special food, I even cooked for him. The damage was already done. I put in a claim to Purina and their claims administrator Sedgwick said that my cat had a chronic kidney disease and the food was not to blame. This is not the case at all. The food was to blame. But, if they admit that the food was to blame, they would be liable in all the other cases of poor, sick and dying cats recently.
Please post this somewhere so that other cat owners can make good and informed decisions. God bless you, Shawnee. We miss you an awful lot. Sedgwick also told me to have the remaining cans tested. If someone could let me know where in New York I can have this done, I would really appreciate it.

We have had a problem with the Purina Chop House and Prime cuts canned food for about 2 months now. Every time our boxer eats it, he has severe diarrhea. We have thought maybe he has a sensitive tummy so we give him a break and then try again. Tonight, it hit me that "there's just no way; he is fine until we give him the canned food". So I decided to get online and do some research to see if I could figure out what was going on and I came across this page. Everyone here has such similar stories with sick pets. I hope that Purina looks into these issues. I will be trying to figure out what to do with these 9 extra cans of food, if there is a way to find out if something is wrong with it, etc. I will definitely be changing brands completely and will no longer be a Purina customer. I'm thankful that other than my poor dog being sick and not feeling well, a lot of steam cleaning my carpets, and tons of trips outside that at least my dog seems to be in condition of recovering okay! Something is seriously wrong with the food!

I did contact PETA for help, and they suggested for us to report this to the FDA right away. They are responsible for regulating food for companion animals, as well as for humans, and are the governing body who should be alerted to this. You should also report this to the manufacturer of the food, the store where you purchased the food, and the BBB. Finally, I urge you to post about this online, on forums for cat-lovers and on Facebook, to hopefully prevent other companion animals from suffering.

I have a previous complaint on here regarding the death and necropsy results of my beautiful little 4 month old Australian Shepherd, Cheyenne, after feeding Purina One food at the end of January 2012. This complaint is regarding Purina's blatant disregard for the welfare of our babies. I have been in contact with Purina for several weeks and they have obtained vet and necropsy results. The results of her necropsy were "Vitamin D Toxicity" (Vitamin D3 is a supplement in Purina's food). It was an urgent matter for me to get the food to the vet in order for Purina's rep to pick it up for testing. "Due to an oversight", Purina never picked up the food, but an investigator from the TN Department of Agriculture did!
I have been extremely persistent with this company and continue to promise them I am not going away. They continue to send me to their claims carrier, Sedgwick! This has nothing to do with money or claims. But my persistence is about Purina doing the right thing and admitting they have an issue with their latest food batches.
My last conversation with Terry ** in Consumer Affairs at Purina was…and I will quote her "We have had no other complaints regarding our food.” I believe my words were, "You are not only a liar, but a ** liar"! I pressed her until she admitted they had not tested any of the food in the lot numbers provided but "their manufacturing processes have not had any problems".
I am paying for testing at Michigan State University labs on Cheyenne's kidney for a Vitamin D level which will take several weeks. Terry ** in her syrupy sweet "you've been on my heart voice" asked me if I would please share those results. "You will receive those results via an attorney, because I am not going to deal with you or this company and I am not going away."
Consumers unite! Go to their Facebook page and post! Call your FDA investigator. Call your Department of Agriculture! Continue to call Purina! Continue to warn other pet owners! Do not take Purina's money as it prevents you from filing further suit. We must contact senators, congressman, etc. until we change the regulation of pet food.
My words to other consumers are: Each and every time you call, Purina has more information to use in their defense in case of a lawsuit, so choose your words carefully. We are emotional over the loss of our babies and being out of control with words is very easy. P. S. My dogs are happily eating a raw diet and loving it. I'm just so sorry I didn't do this before!

We had been loyal Purina Pro Plan dog feeders since its introduction into the trial market. We first purchased for our Yellow Labrador puppy from our vet in late 1986 or early 1987. He endured a few surgeries and would get a bland homemade diet during recuperation. We enjoyed Duncan's company for almost 14 years. When we brought Ruskin and Alexa, Brittany pups into our home in March of 2000, there was no question about changing dog food. Eight puppies were delivered in April of 2001. We kept Stripe, the lone male after adopting out the seven females at 12-16 weeks old.
Over the years, our dogs were afflicted with diarrhea and vomiting. More than once we discovered Purina had changed their formulas. After vet visits and often tests, it would be determined as possible sensitivity to a change in formula. We've briefly tried other top brands, store and vet stocked, always going back to Pro Plan. Lamb and Rice was our mainstay, but occasionally purchased Beef and Rice and Chicken and Rice. Thinking technology and change was a good thing, we greeted the introduction of Shredded Blend positively. We saw an immediate change with our female who already had to be coaxed to eat. She had severe vomiting and diarrhea. We ceased the Shredded Blend and located the Pro Plan formula closest to the original kibble.
Our male developed Cushing's Disease which rendered him blind 2 years ago. We have associated any changes in his bodily functions to the progression of the CD or the Lysodren RX he takes. He is lethargic, easily winded, has seizures, poor skin and fur quality, has frequent loose stools, occasionally gags or vomits and is nearly deaf. If presented with meat, our female would eagerly eat, but was never enthused to eat her kibble when placed in front of her. Our male with CD is the only dog escorted in and out for exercise and elimination needs. Our 11-year old female and her 10-year old pup had the freedom of 5 acres protected by invisible fence.
Around New Year's, our Lexie and Stripe displayed signs of slowing down, wanting to lay in our attached garage rather than inside on the furniture or their doggie beds. The weather had been bitter cold so we assumed it was due to the cold spell in Michigan. When a break in the cold and snow allowed me to take care of picking up their droppings in the yard, I became aware of all 3 dogs having diarrhea. I immediately checked the six bags my husband had purchased 3 weeks earlier. He was unaware the Shredded Blend he bought was the formulation that made our female so sick previously. That was Friday, 2/20/12. I took the-10 year old into the vet that afternoon with an eye infection. The vet said the shredded formula is achieved by adding more sugar and was probably the cause for him not feeling well. Regardless of the ratio and how the formula is created, we were not feeding it to our pets.
We removed the remaining kibble from our storage bin. I explained the situation to our local Chow Hound manager. She suggested an oatmeal/egg formula in a different brand might help normalize their stomachs/bowels. They only ate 2 meals of that, as we began escorting each of them in or out so we could monitor their elimination. On Saturday night, 2/21, our female began panting a little excessively when active. We had taken their food away so continued to monitor her. On Sunday, we drove a little farther and were able to purchase the traditional Lamb and Rice formula. By early evening, Lexie was clearly unsettled. We carried her in and out and tried to keep her hydrated. I kept her next to me for the couple of hours I slept. I had her at the vet before 9AM on Monday, 2/22. She was not eating and had not defecated in at least 3 days.
They did ex-rays and blood work, monitoring her all day. The vet diagnosed a cloud over the lung but could not conclude pneumonia, but was treating her for her wheezing and heavy panting. It was like she couldn't get her breath. We were given the option to take her to the Animal Emergency Clinic to have an EKG performed for a starting expense of $800-$1,000, but that might only determine if her heart had been compromised. We assumed that already. Before being released to me, the technician took her out to urinate so they could chart it. They carried her into the exam room, as she was out of energy and had just laid down after urinating. When the tech laid her on the table, our Lexie started seizing and did not even recognize or acknowledge me! The vet jumped into action and I was able to calm her down and get her focus on me.
He gave her a Lasix injection, then changed his original medication plan to Lasix and Enalapril to be given later that evening and twice daily. He gave me his cell and home number. He said to keep her quiet and calm. One of the four of our family members stayed near her constantly. Tuesday, she perked slightly but refused to eat. After massaging her for 20-30 minutes while laying on a towel on our couch, our daughter noticed she had lightly relieved her bowels. I carried her outside where she defecated a large amount of loose stools, then laid down in exhaustion. When I picked her up under her belly, it put pressure on her bladder which also let loose. Not realizing it at the time, I believe that was the last she was able to semi-control her functions. When she would try to stand, her legs would splay out on the floor. I planned to have her to the vet at 7AM.
My daughter and I were with her when she took a sudden deep gasp of breath at 6:10AM. My husband and younger daughter quickly joined us on the floor surrounding her as she faded from us. Lexie died 20 days shy of her 12th Valentine birthday. Our cats were also eating Purina Cat Chow, but not exclusively. They have had varying stools. Three days ago, we switched our 12 and 10 1/2 year old male dogs and 1 1/2 year old cats, Calvin and Hobbes to a raw diet, supplemented with Honest Kitchen dehydrated food. They are loving and enjoying eating their new cuisine. I wish we had encountered this solution earlier, as our Lexie would have enjoyed her dinner bowl. She would have been 12 on 2/14/12.

On Monday, February 11, 2012 I fed my healthy, 4-year old cat Purina 'Indoor Formula' Cat Chow. Within 24 hours, she was restless, appeared very confused, her head was uncontrollably bobbing, she wouldn't eat and couldn't sleep (very abnormal for any cat). It looked symptomatic of Parkinson's. The next morning, she looked much worse. The vet saw her and, after several tests, she said that her liver labs came back elevated but that was it. Her behavior was so abnormal so the vet called a neurologist, who agreed that we should see him immediately. So we did.
After spending more than $2,000 on tests, an overnight at the Animal Hospital and medicines, the conclusion was that she ate a toxin and the timeline of eating this food and her sickness is uncanny. The food is being evaluated. I would gladly spend the money on my cat again. It was so painful to watch her suffer and wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. I cannot conclude that her illness is absolutely related to consuming the Cat Chow but, again, the timing is unbelievable. After reading the other posts and similarities I saw, I needed to share my story. If you notice any of these symptoms, go to the vet and investigate.

My 3 year old Min Pin has been eating Purina Little Bites dog food and since then, she has been throwing up and having diarrhea. I stopped giving it to her and she went back to normal right after. Purina really needs to work on their brand and figure out why it's making all these dogs sick.

I was feeding my two beautiful cats with Meow Mix. I decided to change them over to Purina Indoor cat (they were getting a little hefty). Within a day of giving it to them, they started vomiting up all the food. When they had nothing else to vomit, they threw up brown liquid, with streams of a more solid liquid mixed in. They stopped eating. They'd walk up to their food bowls, and start crying (even though there was food in the bowls). I stopped giving them the food, and now they're getting better. I've decided to feed my cats and new puppy a raw diet, as nature intended. At least I know what's going into their body.

In late August 2011, one of my cats developed a saddle thrombosis. He was hospitalized and improved and was sent home. He regained total use of his rear legs which had been paralyzed. When at the vet, x-rays showed no enlargement of the heart. While he was recuperating, he would eat nothing but cooked chicken liver and baby food. As he regained strength, he resumed eating his regular diet, Purina Indoor Formula (purchased at Wal-Mart).
In late October, he again suffered another embol. He did not regain total use of his legs. Around the beginning of November, my other male cat Franklin suffered the exact same symptoms. He did not recover the use of his back legs. After a week at the vets, he returned home and grew worse. It was heartbreaking. Around this time Ernie began to projectile vomit blood and defecates and urinate blood. He had been eating Purina as had Frank. He was rushed to the vet where he died. Two days later Frank began to vomit, urinate and defecate blood. He was rushed to the vet where it was also determined that he was in renal failure and his breathing was compromised. It was later discovered that he was bleeding from all of his major organs and was in complete system failure. I was with him when the vet put him down.
Both of these cats were completely healthy 6 year old animals with no history of illness. I had Franklin autopsied upon the recommendation of my vet and the conclusion was as I stated - however the necropsy revealed no evidence of the usual heart enlargement or malformation of the inner heart chambers usually accompanying this type of illness. I contacted Purina when Frank first became sick and they gave me a claim number. I sent them the autopsy report and the vet findings as well as the bills for both cats - $3,000 plus some change.
As of this writing, the attorney for Nestle Purina Pet Care has stated that "the food did not cause the death of the cats." Purina has never requested samples of the food. I still have the bag. Has anyone else feeding their cats or dogs Purina products experienced these symptoms and fatalities? The legal department offered me $750 with the caveat that I waive all of my rights to pursue this claim, either personally or in class action. I am refusing the money (it’s not about that) and I will wait to hear from them before I take further action. This has been devastating.

It's very interesting. My dog is currently at the vet, in bad condition. I have been there for days now. This is his third admission for treatment in 2 weeks. Severe vomiting, which then lead to vomiting of blood, then heavier vomiting of blood. At first, we couldn't figure out why he was sick. He would go into the vet vomiting blood, they would stabilize him, keep him for a few days (feeding him a bland prescription diet), he would come home acting fine, and he would eat his usual dinner, then wake up in the middle of the night violently ill again. He also has diarrhea. He went back to the Animal Hospital, where he was stabilized, and kept for a few days for observation, and treated for dehydration.
So, when we brought him home a second time, we kept him on the bland diet that the vet had been giving him, just until his stomach got back to normal (still not making the connection that it could be his food). He had no more vomiting or diarrhea. After a few days, we put him back on his regular food. By morning, he had the same symptoms! This time there was a lot of blood. I rushed him to the vet, where he was stabilized again. He is still there. I started to wonder if it could be the food I was giving him. I have used it for 2 years, and have never had a problem. So, I did some research (you should too!). There are hundreds of pet owners with the same story. Many have died. Mine may too, not to mention the vet bills that I have accumulated so far. I have sent the dog food to the vet, to be sent to a lab for testing. There are tiny white specs on the dry food. My vet is suspicious. I will let you know her findings.
Many owners have contacted Purina to let them know of this problem. So, why is it still on the shelves? If the results are what my vet thinks they are going to be (I should know tomorrow), I am going to contact my local news station, and make sure people stop buying these products. I buy the Purina Smart Blend Lamb and Rice Dry Food, and mix it with Beneful Wet Food (usually the beef stew flavor). I couldn't see anything in the wet food, but I sent that for testing as well. I do not intend to be quiet about this.

I have eight cats and last Xmas someone dropped off a bag of dry food. Two of my cats open the bag without me knowing it and for days I keep seeing bloody diarrhea in the cat box. I found the bag opened and start my research. I found the product UPC listed as a recall on the FDA. I kept the bag in the trunk of my car. The diarrhea stopped. Then I thought maybe it's only certain products, so I thought I get a small of bag of Kaboodle (7 lbs.). My kitties were all in front of me while I opened the bag and soon enough after about 20 minutes, all of them are throwing up and an hour later the 3 cat box are filled with diarrhea. In about an hour I again look up the UPC; it's from the same lot. I got very dizzy and nauseated myself.
The first time I know it was on recall but did not specify why. This time the press release said due to Salmonella contamination. I was so nauseated myself but I cleaned up everything that I touched with it. Soak everything in Clorox. I called Purina and I was told that the UPC is not on recall list but it is from the same lot since the first 5 numbers are the same. I am convinced that everything of Purina products must be contaminated. In order to eliminate the Salmonella virus, which can be in the air, it has to be vacated and decontamination takes days if not weeks. I have not returned all samples as I am going to test them myself. I have not feed them since then with anything Purina and no diarrhea anymore. I became very vigilant after the first scenario. It’s in my house for about an hour and the damage to my cats and me was horrifying. Imagine if it’s left there for days. Something got to be done to stop the poison from circulating. The UPC starts 17800. That is the lot number. Repeat: decontamination takes days in order to get rid of the virus, which means the Purina plant must be shut down at about the same amount of time.

Go to the press against this huge corporation, and stand together to protect our pets! We have been feeding our pet with Purina for years. We bought a new bag, and our dogs became extremely ill. Projectile vomiting, black diarrhea, lethargy, and clamminess are the symptoms. We have four dogs, one of which (our 7 year old healthy plug) we had to rush to the vet's ER. She stayed overnight.
The vet called this morning to say she passed away. There is nothing else that could have caused this. They are always inside, and they don't run about. They are always supervised in a fenced in yard. All of them are of perfect health, until we purchased the new bag of Purina Little Bites this past week. We have contacted the news. We are going to picket in their parking lots. Please help before more animals die!

I just wanted to do a follow up about my dog that became extremely ill after eating Purina One Smart Blend (as noted in my prior email). I did call Purina to notify them. They said they would look into the product. I am not a Purina basher as I have never had a problem with any of their food in the past. My father worked for Nestle and owns stock in the company.
But there is a problem with the recent batch of Food. My dog had not been out of the yard. The only difference was this brand new bag of Purina. I had test run on my dog at the animal emergency clinic. There were no blockages and all of his tests for parasites came back normal. 4 days later, he is doing better with all his meds (flagel, pro pectian). I have read about more problems in the recent post here and on several dog list. Please notify any other people you know that feed Purina One there may be a problem and to watch their dogs. Please take your dog to the vet ASAP if they are experiencing any problems. I am confident Purina will address this, but we don’t need any more of our beloved friends getting ill until this is sorted out.

Purina One Smartblend Chicken and Rice: Alerts to all the posters with issues regarding their dogs and this product. I just lost my beautiful, healthy vibrant, 16 week old Australian Shepherd after feeding her this dog food from a 34# bag purchased from PetSmart in Nashville, TN on January 4, 2012.
Cheyenne just quit playing, started lying around then she started with vomiting, then the bloody diarrhea. I took her to the Vets and they dewormed her and gave her sulfa but that was the day her eyes became terribly bloodshot. Back the next day, ran a CBC, did not see too much but noticed an eye hemorrhage. They assumed D-Con (none anywhere on our property and she was never off), gave her some IV fluids, started her on Vitamin K and and antibiotic. By Monday, she had deteriorated but the Vet was now perplexed as her chemistry showed Renal Failure. After $500 more in meds and IV's they sent her home to die. She died at home in our arms after 5 agonizing days of suffering, seeing two Vets and consulting with an internal medicine Vet.
She was my 20-year-old daughter's baby girl and we are all devastated. We had an autopsy (necropsy) performed and the results are: "Renal failure with hyperkalemia, suspected Vitamin D". Vitamin D can be formulated incorrectly when added to the dog food formula causing hyperkalemia and subsequent renal and total organ failure and hemorrhage. Vitamin D is also used as a rodenticide "Vitamin D Rodenticide" which causes renal and organ failure and hemorrhage. The lab where she was autopsied does not have the toxicology abilities to specifically test for these toxins. The animal pathologist made the determination by the physical results of her organs.
I asked the Vet and the Pathologist if it could be the dog food, they both said we'd see more of this in other dogs. Then I googled the info and end up here this morning. I spoke with Purina today and the rep carefully took my information. I informed her I had no intention of letting this go so I expect a return call from Purina. I have contacted the TN Department of Agriculture and I will meet with an investigator on Monday. Please contact me if you have been affected by this dog food as I believe we can have more impact in numbers and I would like to see if there is a regional pattern to this. I am sorry I don't have the UPC numbers with me to post here. I have fed my dogs Purina One for 5 years without issue. This is a bad batch of food and Purina needs to step up, admit it and recall it before it causes more people and pet’s heartbreak and death.

I have had my dogs on Purina One for years. I bought a bag in early January, and my 4 month old puppy started acting tired. I took her to the vets a week later with diarrhea. To make the long story short, we lost that puppy 5 days later, because three vets could not diagnose her. We had a necropsy (autopsy) performed, and it points to "calcification of vital organs with kidney lesions commonly seen in high doses of Vitamin D". This was a puppy never out of our fenced yard/house. I have nothing in my house to answer this. I believe this dog food is involved. I feed her several cans of Purina One mixed with hers, because she didn't like dry. I am contacting Purina, and someone is going to listen to me!

After two days, off to the vet. Vet drew a CBC which revealed an elevated white count. Dog placed on meds. Four days of treatment, the poor little guy was improving.
During treatment, I was feeding him rice cereal and boiled chicken. After he finished his course of medications, he was about 80% back to normal. Today, I decided to feed him some of the Purina which he ate little of. Six hours later back to the runs and puking. Purina has a problem with their product.

We decided to try the Purina One Smartblend Lamb & Rice formula dog food for our two labs. Within a few days, they started vomiting and having diarrhea. The only thing that had changed was the food. He is now having difficulty walking, shaking, and unable to control his bowels. We have switched them back to their old food and will be calling the vet in the morning (or sooner if he worsens). Concerned, we began looking online for any type of recall on this food and instead found the numerous other pet owner's similar experiences with the Smartblend brand of products.

I believe it to be the chicken fat sprayed on the kibble. He loved it. But, he has ear infections, itchy skin, chronic urinary tract infection.
I started feeding him canned dog food to help with the UTI, after a lot of reading about it, to increase his water intake, he mostly eats that, but yesterday he had to eat Purina One kibble because he was still hungry. He became so itchy after he ate it. Now I have to search for a new dog food, and if I could afford it, I'd get him Orijen. The vet said to put him on Hill's prescription diet but it has grain as the first ingredient and my dog doesn't like it.
He has to starve before he finally eats it, I switched because of the UTI, last time, but as soon as it cleared up, I switched him back to Purina One, believing that it was a number 1 brand to feed him. They were vomiting, had diarrhea, extended stomach, no appetite, excessive panting, and were drinking large amounts of water. After changing foods, the puppy and cats began eating again after a few days. Unfortunately, we had to put Jack, our 16 year old Jack Russell, down. He was in so much pain and wasn't recovering. His liver and pancreatic enzymes were elevated beyond belief. His stomach was hard as a rock and was vomiting a yellowish foamy fluid. My cat is finally gaining weight and my dogs are satisfied and they don't act like they are starving anymore. Cats won't touch any of the food in this case/lot. For Beef Classic, I've had better luck with lots starting with 130 but cats refuse lots starting with 129. Call Purina. Call them and call them and call them. Each and every time your cat 'refuses' to eat what they normally would gobble down! Luck to us all.

I stumbled upon this website not looking for anything related here. I couldn't believe what I was reading. The same thing happened to us over a year ago. Apparently, I incorrectly assumed the problem was just a torn bag. When I opened a bag of Purina gl cat food, there was webbing and too many different kinds of bugs to count.
I immediately threw it out and went and bought another bag. They were fine. Recently, though, our cats have been vomiting. Occasionally, it is just yellowish or sometimes clear liquid. I even suggested that we should switch foods. Now, we are definitely switching. Perhaps stumbling onto this site has been a blessing.

I will first say that I cannot definitively attribute our situation to the Purina dog food because we have not visibly seen anything in the dog food itself. However, we have two medium to large sized dogs that are both almost 5 years old. We have always fed them Purina One lamb and rice. This week our first dog was sick with diarrhea. We eliminated his food. When re-introduced the next day, he turned his nose up at it which never happens. Our other dog got was sick later that day. My husband investigated the backyard to see if they got into something and then concluded it must be a bad batch of food.
He went out and bought a new brand of food entirely and we started mixing that with hamburger and rice. The first dog got better on his own, the second had to go to the vet to get pro-biotics to get his digestive system back on track. I told a friend about our situation and she asked what brand of food we had. She said they had the same issue with Purina a few weeks ago and that there was information on the web. Again, I have no proof, but we have never had this type of sickness with these two dogs (or previous pets). I can't imagine that it is a coincidence that we all are using Purina and so I thought I should share our situation as well.

But now I wonder if this is the reason he all of a sudden has allergies? I am a very disappointed consumer and will never buy this brand of food again. This is an alert to the public. I bought the large green Purina Dog Food 39lbs, expiry date April 2013 at Harris Teeter Reston, VA in early December. I feed it to my 3-year old border collie Zeppilin, a very healthy happy dog. Then I noticed within a one day that he stopped eating and this has never happened before. Then he started vomiting with lots of stomach cramps in a lot of pain. I took him to a vet and nothing showed in terms of a blockage with the x-ray, then Zeppilin started having diarrhea for a few days and it progressed quickly into blood in stool.
This is for everyone out there that might have bought Purina Dog Food expiring on April 2013. I know this particular batch has some kind of lethal contamination! We have always bought Purina Cat chow indoor formula for our cats. Recently, we noticed lumps starting to form on our older cat and they were by her rib cage. She recently passed away. We just thought she was older and she had cancer. It was a very sad day when she died.
Just recently, one of my 3 year old cats started going to the litter box and straining to pee, acting like he was in pain. He was drinking water like crazy. My cat is 16 and recently began occasionally vomiting (dry food, barely digested). I also recently started feeding both of my cats Fancy Feast. I attributed the vomiting to hairballs, and have always given her laxatone.
In August, I noticed her straining to urinate, and leaving small drops of bloody-mucous behind. She was also vomiting consistently. I took her to the vet who diagnosed her with a UTI. She was put on antibiotics and recovered. 2 months later, another UTI, this time a culture (e-coli), she was given more antibiotics, which made her vomit but I didn't know it then, and food to help her take in more protein and nutrients (she loved it). She recovered. 1 month later, another UTI, she had x-rays to look for kidney stones (none to speak of). She was given antibiotics, which she wouldn't touch until I realized 1 week later that antibiotics were making her vomit and stopped them. Now she's doing much better and our next step is probably ultrasound to look for bladder cancer.
It occurred to me though (not sure why - except that she seemed to be vomiting them a lot) it could be her dry food. After looking online and seeing so many complaints about Purina, I'm even more suspicious. She's normally as active as a kitten. My other cat is younger and doesn't have any issues (yet). I also have an 8 year old golden who I've fed Purina One Lamb and Rice since it was recommended by his vet neurologist (he had an auto-immune disease when he was a puppy). Last week, I noticed they did not want to eat much and went from plate to plate, ate a little. Next day, none of them would eat it. I kept trying new cans. What they did eat made them vomit and one cat was lethargic for days. I refuse to buy any more of this food. It’s very scary. I don't know what is wrong with the food, but I fear it has toxins in it. I switched to another brand and the cats are fine now. Did anyone else experience this?

I purchased around 30 boxes of Purina One Beyond Cat food all with a "Best By" date of June 2012. I had emptied several boxes in an airtight container and one day noticed maggots in the food. I threw all the food in the trash and completely cleaned out the container. I opened a brand new box this evening and it contained maggots. I opened several more boxes and they also contained maggots. I noticed over the past couple of days that my cats have not really been eating much and am afraid they may have eaten maggot-infested food. I now have no food to feed them and am out all the money I paid for the food that had to be thrown away. This is absolutely inexcusable and I plan on contacting Purina to voice my complaint.

I feel like I'm saying the same thing as everyone else. I feed my cat very early in the morning. This morning, I noticed a different smell. It smelled like we had a gas leak. I even walked around the house sniffing the air, looking for the smell. Later in the morning, I was wondering about the cat food. I had attributed the smell to the very early morning hour. When I opened the can that had been in the fridge, I sniffed the food, it did not smell beefy. It smelled exactly like a gas leak. Thinking it was the can, I threw the rest away. The next can was the same. I checked the expiration date, 2013. The cat ate it, but sort of, because he was starved. Reading some of these makes me worried. We're on a pretty tight budget, and I don't really want to have to check different stores to see if they're better. Suggestions?

I used for months until two nights ago, our dog broke out in hives, burns to ears and stomach, nose swelled all but closed and we made an emergency trip to vets. Another trip to vet the third morning. Blood work confirmed it was not a bug bite or poison and vet suggested the food. We swapped to a vet provided one and he's now doing better.

Yesterday evening, I noticed weird little worms along the ceiling in the kitchen. I didn't know what was causing this but I killed the worms that I saw with a broom (I didn't have any insecticide), moved the cat's food dish to a different room, and placed an open bag of Purina One Salmon into the pantry. The next day, as she was "deworming" the kitchen, my roommate found maggots in the pantry and I noticed that they were also in the dish. When I looked in the bag, there appeared to be cobwebs as stated in someone's previous complaint. I've thrown away the bag and I plan to call the vet in the morning to make sure that my cat is okay. My cat is 3 years old and I have been purchasing Purina products since he was a kitten. I am very disappointed as I have never had a problem before and I will definitely have to find another product. I am thankful that I found this site as I was beginning to think that it was the store where I bought it from.

I purchased a bag of Purina Pro Plan. A week later, we found small worms throughout the dog food. We kept the food in an airtight container as we noticed this twice before with the same food. I did return the dog food to Petco and they allowed me to exchange for a different brand. Although I explained to them what happened and told them that it is likely from flies or something that laid eggs in the food prior to packaging, the manager simply said they would throw it out. I told them they had a bigger problem as this was the third time this occurred with this food. My dog is sick and I'm sure other dogs will become ill if the company (Purina) doesn't do something about this. The food should be pulled and someone needs to inspect the factory where this stuff is made. I will never buy Purina Pro Plan again and I will advise anyone I know with a dog just what happened.

They said, "Take him home and enjoy him as long as you can". He wouldn't eat and had vomiting and diarrhea for days as well. We were trying to keep him hydrated by feeding him water through a syringe. After many days and nights of the whole household being emotionally and physically exhausted, I finally changed his food.
After giving him a new diet of white rice boiled with sodium-free chicken broth (for flavor), and water mixed with boiled chicken breast, he's improved. Massive vomiting ensued and without warning. No parasites, grass, hairballs, etc, just the cat food that had been eaten and undigested. I searched the pantry and found an old forgotten can of beef with Gravy Fancy Feast and tried that. Our cat was able to hold down the food for the first time in days. We almost went to the vet for a full work up that would have cost us hundreds of dollars. Thank goodness we figured out.
Consequences? This nasty 36-can case o' poison food will be returned back to Costco for a full refund. They need to be put on notice that they are selling food that will eventually kill animals. And we will never buy another Purina product again. Unusual for him but no big deal - he is a cat. :) However, the problem persisted until he was throwing up continuously. Every time he ate, he threw up what he ate and then had several episodes of vomiting clear liquids and froth.
I thought he had gastroenteritis, so I removed his food. He was so hungry and was begging for food, so I bought some baby food and Pedialyte. He was not happy about that but ate small amounts of the baby food periodically and refused the water with Pedialyte in it. After 36 hours without vomiting, I gave him a small plate of the Purina foods. He immediately threw up several times. I went back to his feeder and discovered that there were small white worms crawling around in the food and on the container. I was totally grossed out! I opened it and moths flew out all over with maggots crawling inside the bag. It was disgusting! We've taken it back and will try another store--another lot distributed may be okay. This is not the first time that there has been web-like stuff around the bag. Purina's way of packing, storing, and/or shipping should possibly be evaluated to ensure fresher dog food. I don't know if there are other complaints but it was awfully disgusting.

Three weeks ago, I opened a new bag of Purina Fancy Feast Chicken and Turkey dry cat food and within hours my cat started vomiting. He has been eating this same food for 8 years with no problems, so I didn't associate his vomiting with bad food. After a week of vomiting and decreasing health, I took him to the vet. Over $800 later the only thing that stopped the vomiting was discontinuing the cat food and replacing it with a different one.
For two weeks, my cat was on death's door and barely made it. I'm a disabled senior and my cat is my world. My vet and I believe the cat food was contaminated and caused the health crisis.

My cat may be dying after eating Whisker Lickin's Cat Treats and became lethargic and very sick--like he had been poisoned. Are there any recalls on this product? Any lawsuits yet? My cat, Smokey, is now seven years old and I don't want to spend $1,000.00 to take him to the vet just to see him die. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

We purchased Beneful Healthy Weight Dry Dog Food in January 2011 trying to supplement our Labradors food instead of snacks. We noticed that she began gagging after the first day to the point of choking, vomiting and going outside to do her business more than normal. After three days, we have concluded that it is the dog food causing the problem. We have not had any problems with her normal food or snacks prior to this purchase. I think that someone needs to check into Purina Dog Foods and issue a recall before they kill our pets.

We had purchased a large bag of BENEFUL from the store several months ago. My Jack Russell started having seizures, out of nowhere (Not to mention occasional diarrhea and vomiting). She's always been a healthy dog. I took her to the vet and they ran a bunch of tests, concluding that she was healthy, other than an elevated level of fat in her liver. I was told if the seizures continued, they would put her on medication for epilepsy. She was monitored closely and the seizures stopped- right after she finished the bag of food. I suspected that it could be the culprit, so stopped buying the food for her. She has been seizure free since then- until my husband came home with a small bag from the corner store. He fed her, and I didn't really even look to see what kind of food it was but now the seizures have started again. I took the food away and she hasn't had one since. Coincidence, I don't think so.

My little papillon Sammie was given one serving of Beneful Puppy chicken and rice dog food on Saturday morning(2 Jan 11). Over the next three days, she became ill and not herself. Today, I came home to find my companion laying on the ground alert but unable to move, weak and limp. I took her to Animal Hospital because she had lost control of her body functions. Within half an hour, she was bleeding from her mouth and nose. At that moment, I had to put her down. Just one serving of Beneful puppy chicken and rice resulted to sudden illness and death of my dog within three days.

I had fed my Chow Chow the Purina Pro Plan wet dog food for at least 2 years. Today my dog was lethargic, vomiting and keeps squatting like she needs to urinate. She hasn't even asked to go outside, just squats in my house and puddles on the floor. My 8-year-old Chow Chow never pees in the house, but it's like she can't control her bladder and constantly has the urge to pee. I took her to the vet this morning and $102 later, she's still squatting every few seconds and acting not quite right. I realized that I had opened a 12 pack of the canned Purina Pro Plan wet food yesterday and started feeding it to her. Thank goodness I found this website. I think her new Purina food may be contaminated and I will stop feeding her this wet food and see if she recovers.

As others have stated, I have been feeding my cats Purina Indoor Cat Chow for years. Recently, I switched to Purina Naturals because the one cat was throwing up. Everything seemed to be going good till the last bag I purchased. The three adult cats do not seem to want to eat it and the 6 month old kitten is eating but has also developed loose stool. I thought it was the treats she was eating but now after reading the complaints, the symptoms they all have are similar. I rushed out last night and got new food and will see how they respond. Also wanted to note that this last bag of Purina Naturals smelled especially strong like they had added too much flavoring.

I have been feeding my cat Purina indoor cat food for the last 2 years without incident. Around Thanksgiving 2010, I purchased a new economy bag as usual. The first day was fine. By the second day, he was throwing up most of it. By the 3rd day, he was sick every time he ate. I tried for one more day to feed this to him, not wanting to believe that Purina would sell tainted food as I have always liked their brand. I returned the bag and purchased a bag from a non-Purina affiliated company and he immediately stopped being sick! I was very disappointed with the company and I will no longer be a customer. Also, I was shocked at how many brands are owned and produced by Purina.

I opened a new bag of cat chow. Shortly after, all 4 cats got sick vomiting and diarrhea. They have been sick since. Obviously the cat food is tainted and need to be recalled!
