Regular store didn't have HAIRBALL MANAGEMENT formula so I bought the INDOOR formula. Mixed it with the HAIRBALL food I had left to transition them. One cat started throwing up almost immediately. Switched back to the unmixed HAIRBALL food I had left and took the other bag of INDOOR back to the store. They traded it for a smaller bag of HAIRBALL and credit. Week or so passed and gave my 3 cats the new package of HAIRBALL today and within an hour, 2 of them had thrown up. There is definitely something wrong with the food in the new packaging. NOWHERE on the bag is the phone # for Purina, so I had to go online to find it. Not very difficult. Gave the young man the numbers from the bag and he said they would send me a check to cover the cost.
Not happy to change. Been using Pro Plan for at least 10 years and have been very happy. But with 2 cats throwing up on 2 different formulas of it, there has to be a problem with the recipe. The young man at the store said my cats weren't the only ones throwing up on the new packaging Pro Plan. I hope that they fix whatever is wrong and get it back out. I bought Blue Buffalo and they seem to like it. It's more $, but overall dry food is very inexpensive on a daily basis.
Purina did right giving me a refund without any hassle. Just hope that nothing in the food will cause any damage to my, or anyone else's cats. Keep remembering the dog food problem a few years ago when many loved pets died.

About a week ago, we bought our 1-year-old Lab Purina Pro Plan Sport. Today I noticed moths around the kitchen. I didn't think much of it since we live in Florida and bugs inside are pretty common. I keep the food in a clear Tupperware and when I went to pour some out, I noticed moths inside. I automatically freaked out and asked my husband to check the big 40-pound bag we keep in the cabinet. As he opened the cabinet door, about 6 moths flew out and when he opened the bag, it was INFESTED with moths!! I couldn't believe that we had to throw away a $50 bag of food. I am just thankful that my dog hasn't showed any symptoms of being sick. We will most definitely be taking her for a check up this weekend!

I've used this product for the last 20 years. Both with an Irish Wolfhound/Rottweiler mix, and a Labrador Retriever. I've never had any problem with this brand, and it seems to meet my dogs nutritional needs. And you cannot beat the price, for the value. Quality control is a big issue for me, and it is increasingly hard to feel safe when feeding your pets commercial foods. I've been having good luck with this one.

I am very disappointed that after so many similar complaints to what happen to my pet this past weekend. My beautiful 6 year old Black Lab was so sick we feared he would die. It could only be the food, he is a house dog and never out in the public. I fed him ONE SmartBlend Chicken and Rice. Then awoke Friday to a lot of vomit all around the house. Took him to a vet who found blood in his stool. He was dehydrated and weak.
The dog was treated with antibiotics and taken off Purina ONE, first to boiled rice and chicken. He is now beginning on Science diet for sensitive stomach. Then this morning, a second dog is vomiting! Needless to say Purina owes their customers an explanation. How can they endanger our pets. This family will no longer buy their products. I will be returning a new unopened bag, and share my experience with other pet owners. There should be a public explanation of what is going on with our pet's food... and repayment of pet owner's Vet expenses at a minimum!

I have always for several years purchased this brand of food in the large bags, But this month I purchased one of the smaller bags around 18-pound bag. Now my dog is so ill he has diarrhea real bad. This just started yesterday. I am trying to keep him hydrated. HE looks so bad I don't know if my dog will pull through this. I am giving him antibiotics so time will tell. I have taken pictures of him since he is so ill. Also it looks like the diarrhea has blood in it now. I will not be feeding my dogs this brand till questions are answered.

Has anyone experienced any issues with the prescriptive brands? A friend of ours’ dog almost died from moldy Purina One dog food last month. I thought about changing brands then but thought maybe the prescriptive diet food was different...?
My cat is diabetic and has been on the same food for about a year with no issues (Purina DM). I opened a new bag of dry food this weekend and he started throwing up yesterday afternoon. He still had an appetite but hadn't kept anything down, even water, for about 15 hours or more. This morning when he didn't eat his breakfast, I decided to give him something different, some Fancy Feast that we still had in the pantry. He has eaten half a can so far with no vomiting, though he still hasn't pee'd or pooped in over 13 hours...
I called the vet and they received no reports on food recalls and I can't find anything online more recent then this forum. I thought about trying to feed him the food again; after his stomach settles down to see if that is truly the culprit... Sometimes when he eats bugs (spiders) he vomits, but usually not for so long. He also vomits when his bowels are backed up, so I'm watching for that too (though the usual signs are absent). I'm just trying to be pro-active by reaching out in this post. Thank you

In May 2013, I started giving my dogs wet food mixed in with their Blue Buffalo dry food as a treat; sadly, it has been anything but that. My old English bulldog started having yellow vomit 2-3 weeks after eating Purina every other day, and the vet said he had high level of liver enzymes and that she believed he had some type of vomiting syndrome and I bought that excuse. Then this past month, my pit bull has started having similar symptoms: diarrhea with mucus and sometimes blood in it, yellow vomit, and occasionally refusing to eat their dry food if Purina was mixed in.
As of 3 days ago, my Old English bulldog stopped eating the wet food and he's starting to act fine again and having less symptoms. My pit bull on the other hand, isn't. She is now having bumps appear on her coat and the vet cannot explain it (hence why I'm switching vets tomorrow) so I have decided after reading all these reviews and my dogs having a similar experience that I will be returning the Purina the second PetSmart opens tomorrow and I'll stick with what I know is the best Blue Buffalo. Hopefully, my animals will recover soon so I can have my best friends back.

Something has definitely changed for the worse with Purina One Smartblend cat food. My two 12-year old cats have eaten nothing but Purina One for their entire lives, starting with Purina One kitten chow. They have been happy and healthy, willingly scarfing down Purina One. Until about a week ago, when it became clear that my more adaptable male cat was eating a minimal amount of Purina One and his far more sensitive sister was eating virtually none. They are indoor city cats whose environment hasn't changed, showed no signs of being sick and were obviously hungry, regularly walking over to their bowls to eat, sniffing and staring at the food and walking away without eating. I thought I was losing my mind until I found this site and realized that there might really be something wrong with the Purina One that was driving my guys away from it.
By the way, I have new bags of 3 different varieties of Purina One (Chicken and Rice, Vibrant Maturity and Healthy Metabolism), purchased at 3 different locations, and my cats are avoiding all of them. Desperate to get them to eat more, I went out and bought a bag of Orijen, which they love. It's much more expensive than Purina One and will require some budget adjustments, but I absolutely adore my little sweeties and want to give them a high-quality food, which I used to think Purina One was. No more!!! My heart goes out to everyone who has posted about their pets becoming seriously ill or dying as a result of eating Purina and I thank you for sharing your experiences. I hope someone at Purina cares enough to take notice.

We have four dogs, and I have fed Purina one lamb and rice dog food to my two dogs for several years and never had any problems with the food itself. When my son moved in he had two dogs, all senior citizens who became ill this week, vomiting, diarrhea, all very ill. We looked at the dog food this morning and found little white bugs on the food. I have tossed the whole can of food out. We keep it in a kitty little pail that has been washed out well and air dried for days. I am in the process of making an appointment with the vet asap to get them something immediately. If something happens to my dogs, God help Purina for this issue.

I have fed my Golden Labs Purina Pro Plan Chicken & Rice Formula for years. For the past year my wife and I have battled small larvae in the closet (on the ceiling) where I keep the dog food. Often small moths, we thought were coming through cracks in the walls somewhere in the closet. We never directly linked it to the dog food until recently as I've begun to dump it into a large plastic bin for storage. This is absolutely the source from brand NEW bags of food. The last NEW bag was infested with full grown moths and larva embedded in their food!! We did a search and found 607 complaints that it has been going on for many years and Purina is doing nothing about it. After 19 years I've purchased my last bag of Purina dog food and since the company continues to neglect this issue, I will continue to spread the word as much as possible. We urge you to do the same!

Let me start by saying that we have a total of 5 cats, all indoor and all confined to 3 rooms. On Tuesday, August 6, 2013, I fed my cat Boo (the other cats do not eat wet food) a 1/4 can of Purina Fancy Feast Flaked Tuna and left for work. My boyfriend woke up and saw throw-up and a yellow mucus. When I came home from work, I could not find Boo. She was hiding under the bed, I pulled her out and she was soaked from the stomach down, would not eat or drink and lethargic . I phoned the vet and was asked to bring her in, I explained that I live an hour away and they would be closed by the time I got there. I took her the next morning to the vet, she had a 104.9 fever, she was given an antibiotic shot and a food supplement, and they said to keep her isolated. The vet stated it was a virus and if she was not better in 72 hours to bring her back.
contaminated. My cat was at the vet in June to be declawed, received all shots and was very healthy up until Tuesday, August 6, 2013.

My wife bought some Purina One for our dogs, three Pyrenees, one 12, one 4 and one just a year old. That was yesterday and they tolerated it. Today, although fed from separate bags, three are vomiting up all the food. Usually I give the two younger dogs Nutro brand. This is large breed Purina One that they don't tolerate. The twelve-year-old has been just tolerating canned dog food but seemed to tolerate the One kibble for 24 hours, but all three vomiting is worrisome. Could be the make up of the Purina was not tolerated but I am looking for any reports of recalls. For now, will discard the two bags my wife bought and the two unopened bags I got at the Air Force commissary, maybe I can return them. They have never gotten sick on any dog food before.

I had been feeding my two dogs outing one lamb and rice for as long as I've had them. I had always trusted the Purina name and was unaware they were bought by Nestle. A few weeks ago I got a brand new bag at BJ's Wholesale Club and fed my dogs. After the first feeding, my 65-pound pit bull got severe diarrhea. The next day I fed them again and the same dog vomited everything she ate about an hour after eating. This lasted for 4 days. I brought her to the vet and they couldn't find anything wrong. I fed my dogs again that night and my other dog vomited immediately after eating. So now both of my dogs have diarrhea and vomiting. I then thought I must have gotten a bad bag of food. I called Purina and they told me that there have not been any other complaints about their food but that they would give me a coupon. After reading all of this I am outraged. I have switched my dogs to Taste of the Wild and they love it and are now feeling better. I also switched my cats food from Purina to Wellness. I will never use Purina products again and am outraged that they are denying to us consumers that there is anything wrong with their products as our animals are getting sick and dying.

I had always fed my cat Friskies brand wet cat food because its five ounce cans were comparatively cheaper than other cat foods available on the market and the large volume of food contained in the five ounce cans made the can last all day. So I continued to feed the Friskies to my cat on a regular basis. One day I bought a new batch of Friskies and opened a can. My cat ate a spoonful of it and then vomited. I just assumed that she had caught a stomach cold and that was causing her to threw up the food. The next day I opened another can of Friskies and she had a plateful of that and then vomited the food again. The third day, I opened another can and she ate a plate of that; she then suffered a lock jaw and could not swallow the food anymore.
Her bowels then spontaneously emptied without any conscious effort on her part. And she then started losing her balance and staggering around. So I immediately took her to the vet. The vet stated that she was suffering from salmonella poisoning. The vet pumped her stomach out but stated that she was in a bad shape and may not make it. She died several hours later that day. I later learned that Friskies had been recalled for containing high volumes of salmonella several times in the past.

I have owned, groomed, boarded, bred, and Shown Dogs to their American Kennel Club Championship for over a decade. I pride myself on educating myself about dogs and their well being, but I missed the Purina name being bought by Nestle and my animals suffered for it. They became very ill with digested blood in their stool, vomit, and weight loss. I am sickened that Purina/Nestle has known about this for years and done nothing. I have researched and made the choice to put my dogs on Acana and Orijen, and will never again support Purina or Nestle products.

I am amazed at the stories concerning Purina One and Fancy Feast as that is all I feed my cats and they too are all becoming ill one at a time. I experienced the worms and webs in one of the bags and just thought it was some problem with the storage area at PetsMart and returned it blaming them. I am horrified to learn this has happened with many others. The stories of mold upon opening cans of Fancy Feast is absolutely horrifying since it tells a story of a whole batch of gore that was either canned anyway to avoid affecting their profits or illustrates severe violations on quality control they do not want to pay for. And there are 1000's of stories on the internet of illnesses beginning immediately after switching to a Purina Product.
My cats too have become ill on the canned Flaked Fish and Shrimp and am astonished to find there is a recall and it is still on the shelves and no one was alerted. Cats are dying. Purina just continues making these foods made in China. Why are companies allowed to torment and kill our dear pets? Yes, it tastes good and they eat it, so us uninformed people keep buying it. For God Sake, shut this company down and allow us to buy a less tasty food that will prevent the agony and slow death of animals who do not deserve this.

My puppy, Charlie, passed away this morning. He started vomiting and having diarrhea on Sunday. He was brought to the vet on Monday. He started to have bloody watery BM and thick clear saliva that hung out of his mouth. Around 8 pm last night, I noticed that his pupils had become dilated and did not respond to light or movement. It was one of the hardest things to watch. I also have friends that had the same thing happen within the past month. One of the dogs passed away. The others just became very ill and had to be kept in the hospital. They all tested negative for Parvo and Corona. The one thing they all had in common was the Purina.
I called Purina this am and was hung up on the first time. The second time I spoke to someone who was somewhat helpful. They are sending me a box to ship them a sample of Charlie's food. I am also having a necropsy done. I am not 100% sure that the food has something to do with it, but after reading all of this and the complaints on Purina's FB page, I am 99.999999% sure something is wrong with their products. When I called them this morning they told me that they haven't had any complaints and I just can't believe that considering all of these posts and the ones on FB that Purina responded to INCLUDING MY POST ON IT!! Unbelievable!!!
If anyone would like to help, please email me or send me a message on FB the package info. on your product if you still have it and the date your pet was sick. If you have any of the food left you can also call them and request that they overnight you a specimen box so they can test it. I will have Charlie's tested by a lab of my choice too, not just them. I plan on sending this to Purina. I have filed a complaint with the FDA. I believe that if more people speak up then they will do something, I hope so anyway. Thank you in advance!

My 2 Dachshunds started on the Purina OM prescription food to lose weight about a week and a half ago. After a week, they were eating half and half mixture of their old food and the OM. On July 3, around midnight, my dog Onyx passed a puddle of watery blood from his anus, and threw up any water that he drank. The 24-hour Vet hospital took X-rays and did some tests, and found no blockages or twisted colon.
He was put on antibiotics and anti-nausea and antacids and got IV fluids. If these didn't help, further tests would have cost close to $1000, which I don't have. I had to get a Care card to pay the $460. He is still on a bland diet. The only thing different in his life was the Purina OM, which he will not be getting again. So now I have a huge bag of this stuff that I'm afraid to give my dogs.

I have been feeding my 4-legged child this food for 4 years. He had gotten sick last year due to ingesting something toxic and almost died, but the doctors were good and he recovered. During the time, he was being fed a prescription diet food. I was ready to make the transition back to Purina One and purchased a bag at PetSmart. I opened the bag and poured some into the container. I rubbed my hand over it to smooth it out so I could put the top on. When I did that, I noticed a glob on my hand. I started looking and it was a worm. The bag was infested with meal worms. They were eating the flat pieces of food and were actually inside these pieces. There were also some just crawling around. I knew when I looked at it good that it did not look normal.
I called Purina to report this and they said they will send me a coupon. I told them that I don't know if I'll use any of their products again. How does something like this get past quality control? Now I wonder if this is the reason he had gotten sick. They should have recalled this food immediately when I reported this, but I have seen nothing about it. If anyone uses this food or any other food made by Purina, look at it carefully to make sure there are no worms. There is no excuse for a product being put on the shelves for us to feed our 4-legged children! How does this happen?

We have been feeding our dog Beneful for 9 years (it's all he has ever had). But a few months back, there was one bag he refused to eat. After about 2 weeks, I realized it wasn't so much that he was sick, but didn't like the smell of the food. We bought another one bag (completely wasted the one bag) and he started eating. Figured it was just a bad bag (it did look different - dry and crumbly). Months later, he is now refusing to eat again. He smells it and refuses it just like before. But you get hungry enough and you'll eat anything. But then he eats a lot of grass because his stomach hurts. He is very lethargic and whines as if he isn't feeling well. This is not like him.
We have fed him twice a day this same Beneful Dog food without any problems until about 6 months ago. Now he isn't himself. I just got done adding some flavoring to the dog food to see if he just didn't have an appetite or he didn't like the smell of the food. He then devoured it. So I know he has been hungry. I decided to google the dog food and find out that other dogs are dying. I wonder if that's why our dog isn't himself. We are concerned that he may be dying as well. We will switch to something else and see if he gets better.

What she DID like was Purina ONE chicken and rice formula. The other dogs liked it too, so that's what we've been buying. Last weekend, I had my husband stop after work to pick up a bag since I was almost out. Come Monday, Luna, our 9.5-year old Boston terrier, had diarrhea. I held wet food (usually mixed with dry for their evening meal) and just gave all four dogs dry food. Yesterday, came home to a ** mess, and I mean **!! We figured it was Luna! This morning, Zuzu and Caesar (our male boxer mix) both have diarrhea, but Luna is better since I've withheld dog food since the small bowl she got on Monday evening and I've been giving her boiled rice and canned pumpkin. Our fourth dog, Roo, a female Boston terrier, has never been sick a day in her life and has always seemed to tolerate everything and anything she consumes. I'll be keeping a close eye on her and hope she doesn't become ill too.
We are now withholding all dog food from all four dogs and I just boiled rice in beef stock. I got them some plain Greek yogurt and more canned pumpkin. I bagged the Purina dog food up and drove 40 miles one way to buy two bags of Taste of the Wild bison & venison dry food which is supposed to be totally grain free. If they all get better with the temporary rice diet, I plan on raising hell with Purina and I will never buy their products or any pet product associated with them ever again. I've also filed a report with the FDA regarding this matter. Purina has let the ball drop before with their pet products. Major boycotts might make them open their eyes and take more care with products that we use for our pets.

I just put down my 14 year-old Australian Shepherd after two bouts of extreme diarrhea and an attack of Vestibular Syndrome. The first bout of diarrhea came after I had added Purina One canned Tender Cuts ("Wholesome" Lamb & Brown Rice) to his kibbles (Rachel Ray's Nutrish, with which I have no complaint). The feces were bright yellow in color. He was treated with antibiotics and fed rice and boiled chicken; however, while I was away and against my instructions, his sitter gave him more of the canned food. When I returned, he again had extreme diarrhea. This time the Vestibular added to his misery.
When I brought him to my vet, he tested fresh feces and told me my pet was absolutely riddled with bacteria and would need a massive dose of antibiotics to kill the bacteria but would not likely recover well from the Vestibular. While his food did not cause Vestibular Syndrome, I believe the canned food was dangerously tainted. My dog was one who would eat most anything without harm. In the end he even refused chicken and rice. I am heartbroken. I believe use of this product hastened his death. Sure, he was an old guy, but he had a little more life in him that I believe Purina took away. I would avoid this product at all costs!

And when my husband opened the food, a moth or two flew out into our house. Now we have to watch for them and try to kill them.
I was told to make sure the area the food was opened in was cleaned. I asked her if we could have problems from this and she said that there is a possibility and if we had to call an exterminator out, they would pay for it. She also said to make sure we kept an eye out for mold where the bag was opened. WTH??? She went into the speech about how it could have happened after it left the plant. But I told her the whole shipment had it. She then tried to tell me how their food is made under FDA standards, the same standards that our food and makeup is.

I have a Terrier/Poodle mix that we rescued from the local shelter 5 years ago now. For the better part of the last five months or so, my dog has been having constant vomiting issues as well as very loose BM. It got to the point where he would smell his food and back away from the bowl. He wouldn't even eat a single piece, but give him Milk Bones and he gobbled those up with no issues after.
After not being able to find his usual Purina One on the shelf a few weeks ago, we bought a small bag of Iams to hold him over. My dog ate it up. While for weeks, he had only nibbled at his other food at best, he ate this so fast we thought he would choke on the stuff. We thought all was well until later that night after we got back from our walk and gave him a Beggin' Strip. He puked again - just the treat too, not his dinner. It didn't dawn on me that the treats were Purina, the same brand as the old dry food until I was watching TV. It all connected right there. We've always fed him Purina brand dry food and as long as we've had him, he has always had some sort of digestive issue. It only got noticeably worse the last few months.
We've not given him any more Purina brand anything and it has been weeks since he's thrown up or had a messy BM. He has got more energy, and his coat even looks better. Whatever it is that Purina is doing, they need to stop. My dog was sick as heck for months before we figured this out. It's a wonder it didn't kill the poor little guy. Purina needs to pull the obviously contaminated products off the shelf and offer up refunds, not coupons to poison our dogs some more.

My dog definitely got sick from Purina's Puppy Chow. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with him for a while. After a few days of diarrhea, I took him to the vet, had a fecal test run (which came back negative) and put him on antibiotics and all that. I have been giving him prescription diet i/d since then instead of his dry food. He was finally back to normal this morning. Well, I mistakenly mixed in some of the Purina when I fed him this morning because he seemed to be doing so well. When I got home this morning, his diarrhea was worse than it had been a couple of days ago!

I've been feeding my dog Purina dog food ever since my dog was a puppy; he is now eight years old. My veterinarian told me it was wise to put him on senior dog food. Of course, I chose Purina Senior; it is my only choice. I'm an adult in my 60s and when I was a child, we fed our dog and cats only Purina. So there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted Purina to be in my dog's diet. To be honest, my choice is Purina. I did maybe have one or two issues with them and both times, they were very sincere and took care of the matter quickly and efficiently and professionally. My vote is for Purina - A+!

We have been feeding our cats Purina Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health formula for the longest time; before that, Purina One in the same formula. With the Purina One, there was a recall that no one really knew much about. The products were still on the shelves, and we were still purchasing it. Our cats were vomiting profusely, lethargic and irritable. This is when I found the recall and contacted Purina about the matter. They were sorry for the trouble and mailed me a couple coupons for more of their food. Really? That is when we switched to the Pro Plan. We were doing fine for quite a while. Recently, that is not the case. With the last two bags of food, we started noticing some changes in our cats again that turned into more vomiting.
So I started taking them one by one to the vet. There was no diagnosis other than they had eaten something. Then, when my little dog (who is notorious for getting into the cat’s food when they leave leftovers) started getting sick. I knew it had to be the cat food! It was the only common denominator. They have changed their ingredients a few times since we started purchasing this food a couple years ago, and I am less than happy about this. My cats have ballooned in weight (on a regulated feeding schedule), became very sick and very irritable all over again. Not to mention my poor little dog! After thousands of dollars in vet bills and the cost of this horrible product, we are done!
I strongly urge everyone to take a good hard look at their pet’s food and compare that to a better product. Determine if your pet’s well being is worth the risks we (and many others) have endured for a better priced food. You get what you pay for, or at least that used to be the case. Oh, before I forget! As if all the above information wasn't enough, have you ever wondered what this new ingredient, animal digest, in your cat’s food is? Animal Digest is a common ingredient used in pet foods. As defined by the AAFCO, it is a material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. A cooked-down broth made from specified or unspecified parts of animals (depending on the type of digest used).
If the source is unspecified (e.g. "Animal" or "Poultry"), the animals used can be obtained from any source so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included are 4-D animals (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter) like goats, pigs, horses, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on. According to FDA, digests are materials treated with heat, enzymes and/or acids to form concentrated natural flavors. Only a small amount of a chicken digest is needed to produce a chicken-flavored cat food, even though no actual chicken is added to the food.

Well, as for last night, one of the big dogs has begun vomiting and has pudding-like stools, and one of the babies in the other building, not sure which, vomited. I'm taking the dogs and stool samples to the vet tomorrow. For all I know, this might be a viral or bacterial infection. I will keep you all posted. Today, all the dogs are on rice with cottage cheese with a very little Hills W/D for a bit more flavor. My vet used Purina himself and has had no problems. He is checking with UC Davis to see whether they know of any changes in formulation or pre-recall problems.

I had purchased one can ProPlan Ground Chicken and Rice on my PetSmart card on Thursday, May 9, 2013. I had never used the product, but my dog is a picky eater, so I decided to try him on the ProPlan, because of the advertisement claiming it is so healthy for our pets. My dog started eating it on that following Saturday. By Sunday, he threw up and wouldn't eat, and on Monday, May 13, 2013, he ate a small portion, but then again threw up. He began not acting very well, so I drove to the Banfield clinic, where he is a patient, and related what had been going on.
Upon examining him, the vet asked what I feed him, and I told her Pedigree, but then remembered I had tried him on the ProPlan canned dog food. She explained that dogs are getting sick and dying after eating Purina's line of food, and that it is massive. Mine was the first that they'd heard to be sickened by canned food which means the contamination is more massive than originally believed, in Purina's products. She drew blood to see if he had the contamination, and sure enough he did and had to start on expensive antibiotics.
I am madder than mad at Purina, for not owning up and doing the massive recall that they should, out of compassion. But hey, we're talking moneymaking here, so, I am also wondering why PetSmart does not pull these line of food. Is the whole thing fixed to buy it at the store and then you have to take your dog to their clinic? I am beginning to feel it is a massive moneymaker on many levels. To me, it seems that the cheese is put in the trap, the cheese is eaten and then we must run our dogs to the same clinic in the PetSmart store.

Apparently, there may be problems with Purina products: Dog Chow (which had one recall), Purina One and Pro (which have not) and I am finding that I am not alone with mysteriously ill dogs. We have three established little chi's (here for several years, the most recent over a year and a half) who are having bloody diarrhea and general lethargy. So I decided to see if there were any recalls on the foods we use. There aren't. But I found this interesting blog site and am sharing the site link with a large number of dog people I know.
I took one chi, Shelby, to the Vet yesterday, the first showing symptoms, and I was told it is colitis, an inflammation of the large intestine. She was given some meds and I changed her food to home cooked rice with cottage cheese, and she is less lethargic and her poop is starting to look better today. But now, two more are ill. If she does not continue to improve, or more of these little ones get ill, we will be spending a lot of time and money at the Vet's office. So far, none of the bigger guys are ill, nor are the foster puppies who are in a different building on the property and on Purina, but they are eating puppy small bites, a different food than the rest of them. It may be a batch-to-batch issue. I don't know. This appears to have begun with the last bag or two of Purina One adult Chicken and Rice.
I read these reviews from this site and was very surprised and angered by what I read. We are pulling all the Purina products in the house and returning them tomorrow, including cat food. We have used their products forever but apparently, their foods have changed since Nestle bought out the company (BTW, Nestle's CEO thinks humans should pay for water, that it is not a right.) I am also concerned about Mazuri foods which are a subsidiary of Purina. We are feeding our Potbelly pigs their specialized feed without problem at this time but scary for sure! Anyone have any experience good or bad with Mazuri feed?
Anyway, this is a difficult situation. I will be cooking for all the dogs for a while and that's a lot of cooking since we run a dog rescue and often take in relatively large numbers of dogs! Currently, our population is stable so I know that is not the issue, and the affected dogs were okay until the last bag of Purina. (Sigh) I will keep reading this site and posting what we experience.

We recently adopted a second kitten named Shadow, through PetSmart to be a playmate for our resident kitten, India. When we adopted Shadow, PetSmart gave us a bag of Purina Pro plan kitten food, as this was what they were feeding the pets at the facility. I tried to keep India separated from him when they ate, as she is on Royal Canin and we were trying to wean Shadow on to the Canin as well.
In the following week, I caught India several times sneaking in and eating the Purina and not her Canin. I saw the difference in her immediately. She became bloated, lethargic, and feverish, and would vomit. This was just from her stealing a few bites of the Purina! Pretty soon, she stopped eating or drinking, and would lick her lips, indicating nausea. This all happened very quickly - within a few days.
Once I put two and two together, and realized it was the Purina, I dumped the stuff, so she couldn't possibly eat it again, and placed them both on the Canin (Shadow, having previously been an alley cat, has a tummy of steel, and took right to the Canin with no problem). The vet stated that she was suffering from severe dehydration due to nausea, and required a week of anti-nausea medication and antibiotics for a possible infection.
I am really concerned that Purina is producing a dangerous product for our animals. If this could happen to my cat within 1 week of eating Purina on the side, then I can't imagine what painful and dangerous medical conditions other people's pets are encountering when placed on the diet full-time. I realize there are some pets that eat Purina Pro and are fine, but there seems to be a significant percentage of pets that have a terrible reaction to their products, and that should be enough to get this addressed.

I have tried numerous different dog foods, and it seems to be the best and one that he will eat. As far as snacks, he eats the Alpo Variety Snaps and that is the only snack he will eat. I tried others, and he turns his nose up at them, and then set it under the dining room table. I think that Purina is the best dog food on the market, and I am sick of people accusing them of killing their fur children. I know a lot of people that work there, and they are very caring people. As I read this article, it brought my attention to my dogs' dog food. We have always fed our Chloey the Purina Dog Chow and never had problems until about January when we switched to the Lamb and Rice formula for a mix up in her taste. She loved it! However, I didn't notice until reading the reviews of how much she has changed. She doesn't have the get up and go and has seemed rather grumpy. I thought it has been the crazy weather we have been having in Missouri. But the past 3 weeks, she has been wanting to eat excessive amounts of grass. Needless to say, tomorrow I'm going to the store and will be buying her stuff for her homemade dog food. I've wanted to do this for a while now and now this is the extra incentive to do it.
Let me also add that I don't like feeding her the Dog Chow; it's the only thing she will eat. We have tried her on 10 different dog brands both low price and several expensive brands but the Dog Chow is the only food she will eat. About halfway through her 20-pound bag of food, she doesn't want to eat anymore and we would have to find something else that she would eat. Purina dog food and treats will no longer be in my house.

Our once beautiful, loving and healthy Siberian Husky (Jericho) passed away today, April 21st, 2013. Only seven days ago he was his happy, healthy self. He ran to the door to greet us; he barked at the mailman; and he begged for table scraps. Earlier in the week we had gone shopping as usual and bought a bag of Purina One Cat food for our two cats. When we brought it home, they positively refused to eat it and cried with hunger. Very unlike them. We gave them a different brand we feed our younger cat, but left the bowl of Purina in hopes that they would stop being fussy. Jericho has a long history of eating the cat food when it is left unattended and did just that.
A day or so later, he woke up my father whining to be let out. The two went downstairs and the dog immediately got sick. At first we thought he had hurt his back on the stairs as he had done once before. We gave him lots of rest, but he did not recover. As the days went by and he refused to eat and continued to vomit, we rushed him to the vet. The vet told us he had eaten something and was sick. He gave Jericho some medicine, but it was too late. He proceeded to get worse overnight and died today. There is no doubt in my mind the cat food poisoned our dog, and I intend to have it tested asap.

I have a total of 5 cats, all domestic: Two short hairs (10 going on 11-year-old, gray tiger; and a 7 going on 8-year-old, black haired cat); two medium hairs (a 3-year-old black and white, and a 2-year-old black), they are brothers a year apart; and a 1-year-old long haired tabby. I bought this product because Purina said it would help the ones that don't need to lose weight maintain weight and the ones that do lose weight. I followed the instructions at the back. We started using the product a year ago when it came out. Everything seemed fine until winter hit. My one year old in November started losing hair on the back of his neck. First spot was the size of a dime and he was constantly digging. We thought maybe he was allergic to plastic, so I went out and bought stainless steel bowls and got rid of the plastic.
By December, around Christmas, he started getting more spots and he was constantly digging. His attitude changed. We couldn't get near him. He was jumpy, moody, don't touch me I don't want to play - a complete opposite of himself. By January, we bought cortisone (the shampoo). It was worse. He completely was digging and wanted nothing to do with people. So I called the vet in February because he really got worse - he was biting. In the meantime, we ruled out flea mites and worms. I stopped using the food with all 5 cats on Feb. 13, 2012 and immediately called the vet because he wasn't hunting or playing like he should. He had an appointment on the 20th and by the 19th, my poor baby boy lost his hair on the hips and came out overnight. I said, "That's it."
I called Purina. They said, "Sorry, but nothing we can do." I spent $45.10 that day. March 20th came, his hair still wasn't growing in right and he was digging. It cost me another $45.10. Purina still said it wasn't their fault. I just took my two year old on April 15th because minus hair on the back of neck, he's starting to have same problems as my one year old. Thank God it's not as bad as the one going on two. I am so angry with Purina. They said it's not their fault, but guess what? I might be taking my three 7 and 10-year-old next. They were perfectly healthy before this. My cats have always been raised on Purina and it's never done this until we used this product. So be warned before you buy or try the Healthy Weight. Oh and they got fat on it and not lose weight not.
So now between just the two boys, the one and two year old, I've spent over $100 and I'm looking at another $100 for the other three. If that isn't their fault that their food reacted horribly, then I don't know what it is. Also, I know cats shed but between my 2-year-old and 7-year-old, they can cover a blanket with cat hair overnight. That's not right. Purina needs to get their heads out and put the blame on products, not my 5 cats, because like I said, they had no problems until this food!

Do not buy this food for your pets! Thanks to your worthless dog food our Lab will soon die of cancer at the young age of 8. For his entire life we have fed him Purina Pro Plan (large breed with shredded "chicken"). We also fed him several treats made by Purina, including the biscuits and the Busy Bones. We never put all the evidence together, but it's now clear to us that feeding him Purina brand food (and treats) has slowly poisoned him. He now has an aggressive form of cancer. Three weeks ago, when he first showed signs of illness, we switched his food to a healthier and natural brand. We have already started to see a big improvement in his health and outward appearance, but I'm afraid it's too little too late to combat the cancer. He will now be having surgery on Tuesday, which is going to cost us thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, it will only prolong his life a matter of months.
I will never feed your product to any of our pets again. There are literally thousands of complaints out there against this company. I am quite fussy about what I give my 5-year-old cat - steering away from the cheapest cat food. But for a treat and a change (as she likes a varied diet), I introduced some Purina One dried cat food in Salmon flavor bought on chance from a supermarket. It was not especially cheap. It seemed like a good brand and she loved it. Note: She was not eating this alone, only had a handful each day. Within two weeks, she started to vomit several times a day. I took her to vets, who did blood tests. Her pancreas was inflamed and more expensive tests were needed. She was taken off all her old foods (including the Purina) by the vet and put onto Hills prescription D/D diet (don't know if you can get it in US?), as well as tablets to stop the vomiting.
Her latest results show no sign of inflammation so we have been told to stop the tablets, keep on the new prescription food and see what happens. I have my fingers crossed that the vomiting won't return. The vet doesn't know what caused it, but I have my suspicions about that Purina cat food (having read other reports of illness afterwards). I hope to God that she is OK now because I feel so responsible for introducing the dreadest stuff and would hate for anything else to happen. I can't be sure it's the reason, but the timing seemed more than coincidence. I would never feed any animal anything by Purina again.

I am a long time customer of Purina. I have rescued and raised many puppies and all of them have been fine on Purina Puppy Chow. I now have 8 dogs, 7 adult and 1 puppy. I recently wanted to give my adult dogs a change, so I changed from Beneful to Purina Smart One Lamb and Rice (I believe the lot # is SP54401 41308794). After one bowl, all 7 of my adult dogs had severe diarrhea and continue vomiting for the next 24 hours. I called my vet and he instructed me what to do and stated it must have been the food. I have 4 very old dogs and was unsure if they were going to make it, but thank God they did. We called Purina and they stated they had received no complaints with this dog food, but after reading this website, I find that hard to believe. Please if you have experienced a similar situation, please call them and file a claim.

My dog has been eating Iams since he was a puppy and he finally got bored of it after 11 years. I have been feeding him Purina Lamb and Rice for several months. Recently he has been lethargic and has been sleeping more than normal, but I thought he just had a cold. Yesterday he began vomiting and dry heaving. I reduced his servings to see if he would hold down smaller amounts in case he had the flu.
I asked my mom to feed him a small amount while I was at work and she was concerned about the lamb chunks as she hadn't seen them before. I double checked the photo online to compare. The food looked normal, but then I began seeing posts about sudden vomiting from several sites including this one. I promptly threw away the remaining food and will not be buying Purina brand again. Thank you to all those who posted previously. My dog is a tough old man, but your posts may have saved his life!

I bought a brand new bag of dog food on Friday, 3/28/2013, Chef Michael's Chicken Flavor which I have fed my dog for 3 years now. He has been throwing up this past weekend. I didn't see this food on the recall list, but I found this forum and was very alarmed. I will be pulling my business from Purina as a result. I am very saddened by this because throughout all the recalls that have gone wild the past few years with dog food/cat food, this one always seemed to hold steady. I hope my dog will be okay. It makes me very nervous that there still isn't a recall on Purina products right now, because reading the entries about this and it being within the past month is very alarming.

I opened a new 30-pound bag and both dogs refused to eat it. We have been buying this product since January 2013. It smelled different. After smelling over and over, it came to me that it smells like mouse droppings. Years and years ago I bought a country home that came with a stove. I cleaned the oven and baked in it. It had a terrible smell and I discovered under the stove top the many mouse droppings that had heated up when I used the range. Smells exactly like this bag of food. I am not accusing, but I know my pets and they say it's bad. Too bad we can't trust any companies anymore. Be careful people. My husband thinks I overreact, but he doesn't realize the money I'm saving in vet bills. No more Purina products.

Pro Plan Chicken and Rice - My dogs have been eating this food for several months with no problems. In the last two weeks, one of my dogs has developed vomiting and diarrhea. I visited my vet this morning after Imodium failed to slow down the problem. There was another dog there with similar symptoms this morning. We began a conversation and I discovered he had been feeding his dog the same food I was using. My dogs are inside/outside and I keep an eye on them when they go out. I could not find anything they had gotten into that was new to the environment in the yard. At first, I thought only one of the two had a problem. When I returned home from the vet, I let the other dog out and discovered that he too had diarrhea. I then started reading some of the posts on this site.
I am not sure that the food is to blame, but they both eat the same thing. The dog I knew was sick would not eat at all. The other dog, who normally eats everything in sight, had depressed appetite, but I had not noticed a problem in him until today. Out of an abundance of caution, I have removed the Pro Plan from their bowls and ceased using this food. I would recommend those experiencing similar symptoms to consult the vet and possibly change food. This is not over for me as both my dogs are now sick. I am posting today so that others may be aware that there may be a problem with this food. I have switched to another brand of food altogether. I will update this post as more info becomes available.

We have a 6-year-old Australian Kelpie. She never had any health issues at all. She had been eating Purina One since she was a puppy. We switched from the Chicken to Beef to Lamb just to give her variety. About 3 weeks ago, she started drinking non-stop. I had just recently opened a bag of the Chicken and Rice. After two days and a few accidents in the house (just pee), we took her to the vet. She showed no other signs of sickness. There was no diarrhea, vomiting or change of attitude.
It's important to note that she stopped eating the Purina One. We thought she lost her appetite due to being sick or maybe a bad tooth. She would stare at it and walk away. She would still eat her hard dog treats so it didn't add up. I bought canned food just in case and she ate it like a normal dog. Her blood tests came back with an elevated level of calcium. Everything else was normal. Since high calcium is often cancer, we agreed to send her blood to Michigan State to do a complete breakdown of her blood. Her calcium level was higher this time but there were no other signs of sickness or disease. The enzyme for cancer was non-existent.
So, back to the vet for imaging. This too showed no infection or tumors. They suggested taking her to a specialist. The vet suggested a prescription renal health dog food to help her kidneys. The elevated calcium would eventually destroy her kidneys so I guess it might help. She has been gobbling it down. Over the past week and a half, her drinking has become normal. She is even leaving water in the bowl. We decided to try a better dog food and went with Blue Buffalo Wilderness. She ate a cup and a half in about a minute.
We are planning on having another blood test done this week to see if her calcium level has dropped. I am thinking it will. While I can't prove Purina One caused this, it is the only logical solution at this point. After hundreds of dollars in tests that all came back negative, what would you think? I've read several complaints about Purina and can't help but think that their food would have killed my dog. I will add a post once we have the blood test done and let folks know what the outcome is.

In 2009, our male cat that ate Kit and Kaboodle his whole life and was only 2 years old came down with renal failure; he could not be saved. Shortly after, we adopted two kittens, both females. They were 3.5 years old. Pinky died this morning, March-14-2013. She also ate Kit and Kaboodle her whole life. These are indoor cats; they don't go outside. They don't get into things, and they don’t swallow things. I have been reading reviews about Purina cat food by other consumers, and I am convinced it is related to the food. Two cats in four years seem to be oddly excessive. I’m 47 and have never seen our cats die before they were 10 plus years. Plus, one of the other cats is constantly throwing up the food right after she eats it. I thought she just ate too fast but, I now think otherwise. Can someone please get on this with Purina? Why are these pets dying?

We have always used Purina products until recently. In September 2012, Sara had puppies. We only fed her Purina Puppy Chow through pregnancy and delivery and through to her weaning puppies. Then she was fine but in two days was dead. We thought it was due to complications. Now I think it was the dog food. She vomited uncontrollably, had this far off look in her eyes, and couldn't even hold her head up and then started a bloody diarrhea. Yesterday, March 4, 2013, I bought Purina One Lamb and Rice and after four hours of first feeding, my two dogs both started vomiting until it was bloody and mucus filled. We had not changed anything else and neither had been out of sight nor in a different location. I nursed them all night long and gave them a different brand of dog food and they are doing so much better today. Needless to say, I will never use Purina again! I have been spreading the word to all my friends and family and several have even said they had similar issues with different kinds but always a Purina brand. I hope they start a major recall and figure out what is going on and if not, I hope they go bankrupt and lose the right to make food of any kind. I included a picture of the exp. date and lot number.

I called the company and they said it can happen when cases are stacked at factory (compresses can enough for air to get in though no obvious sign of damage can be seen). I took my coupons a month later, bought more and guess what, yep, all were moldy and now different best before dates. I gave up and did not call again because obviously, it needs to be removed from the shelf and they do not seem to care. So I trashed the food and threw out the remaining coupon. Really bad and obviously widespread. My first purchase was in Windsor, CT and second in Norwalk, CT. I just think someone like you should know. Thank you.

We've been feeding our dog Purina Lamb and Rice for 11 years without any problems, until recently. About a week ago (2/25/13), she started throwing up profusely (for over 24 hours, on and off about every 3 hours), wouldn't drink at all at first & then started to only to throw it back up, couldn't poop but was trying to a lot and obviously wouldn't eat. I made a vet appointment. They did blood work & X-rays - everything came back normal (thankfully) except her "intestines looked abnormal" & her colon was completely cleaned out (vet said diarrhea). She has been on nausea meds and antibiotics for about 4 days and is finally getting back to normal.
In these past 4 days, we've kept her food around her in hopes she'd eat, but she wants nothing to do with it and refuses to eat it (In fact, she has been dumping it out over and over). She'll eat anything else we give her (rice, plain burger/chicken, bread, pretzels, her treats). After looking online, I saw a lot of these posts and they have the same time-frame for sickness as my pup, and some are also in the same geographical area. We will no longer giver her Purina Lamb and Rice or any Purina dog food. It's a shame that Purina is standing behind their product(s) when clearly something's up with them!

Last November, I lost two members of my family after feeding them both Purina dog food; my 10-year old Pitbull mix named Ginger, and a 3-year old Labrador mix named Jameson. Unaware of the allegations against Purina at that time, I had been feeding both dogs several different forms of the brand including Beneful and Purina Lamb and Rice mix. Ginger became ill first. In a matter of two weeks, she went from the loving and energetic dog that had been by my side for 9 years to an ill stricken dog with kidney failure, vomiting, loose bowels, and could barely move under her own power. After many costly veterinary visits, we regretfully had to put her down on 11/03/12.
Jameson, the younger Labrador mix, showed minimal signs of illness until about a week after Ginger had been put down. He too began to show the same signs as Ginger had, and we immediately took him to the vet as well. We found out that he had the same diagnosis, and the vet had no solutions to the problems. So again, regretfully, we ended up putting down a 3-year old Labrador mix that was well before his prime exactly 2 weeks after having to put down Ginger.

I chalked it up to being fixed the night before, pain meds perhaps. I continued to feed him a mixture of his other food and the Purina One. He's had diarrhea light pudding like all over the place. I'm still blaming it on the surgery, not thinking it's the food change. I get him to only Purina One and he is now pooping nothing but mucus and slime on his first day of only Purina One! I rushed him to the vet know getting the one plus one equals my poor puppy. It's the food. The vet runs parasite tests, parvo and blood work. I am instructed to feed him pumpkin, rice, yogurt, scrambled eggs, and chicken only for the days I await the test results.
Vet calls, no parasites. Blood work is okay and I informed the vet after getting him off the Purina One for 2 days his bowels are returning to somewhat normal. Vet tells me to feed him a probotic food. I went with Holistic Select Puppy and from that day forward, my puppy is regular, shiny, happy, healthy, energetic and has never vomited or had a loose bowel since. Shame on Purina! Shame on you for putting out such a poor product! Thank God, I caught it! I took my cats off their cat food and put them on Wellness. FYI, people, read your labels. Science Diet is full of byproducts; so are Iam's and Eukanuba. Do your homework. Your furiends deserve it. They're here for such a short time. When we brought the second bag back to PetSmart, the manager told us that they have had problems with Purina One Beyond in the past having moths. We also lost our beautiful and healthy 8-year-old kitty in November. After reading all of these reviews, I can't help but wonder if it could have been the Purina food. She was a 100% indoor kitty who never had any health problems until one day, we noticed she was extremely lethargic and not eating.
When she started having trouble breathing, we took her to the emergency vet and they couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong, just that she was anemic and they didn't know why. We took her to our regular vet the next day and she too was stumped as to what was causing her symptoms, but prescribed antibiotics and steroids for her. I started Beyond One when it first hit the markets. Honestly, it was cheap. I went from a much higher quality dry food for my cats to Beyond, thinking: 1) I’m saving money; and 2) I want to cut back how much they eat in dry. The last 1.5 years has been hell for us. Our cats experienced UTIs, defecating issues, and now, fatty liver disease. The two more affected are senior cats who preferred dry over wet. One has IBD, therefore a suppressed immune system. Cat #2 had at least UTIs (took months to figure out which cat was ill) and stopped eating over a week ago. He just spent 4 nights in the ER and $3600 later, he is on a feeding tube and may have neurological disorder.
Cat #1 is back to not eating for a 2nd time. He is on medication that stimulates his appetite. I am now force feeding throughout the day. Cat #3 had UTI twice, but adapted nicely to all wet-dry food. He is the youngest and healthiest of my 5 cats. Cats #4 & #5 rarely ate dry food. They much preferred canned. Now tell me how Purina Beyond One cannot be the cause?

Lira is a rescue horse, neglected by her former owners, who has been with me now for about a year and a half. She had recovered beautifully, and was a happy active girl until this past fall when I bought her a bag of Purina Ultium food from our neighborhood feed store. She began losing weight, lying around, and was generally deteriorating. She got so bad that I had the vet scheduled to come euthanize her, but the morning it was scheduled, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Coincidentally, she had eaten the last of her Ultium the day before, so I stopped at a different little place and picked her up some cheap sweet feed, just to get her by. The lady who ran that store told me that she would not sell Purina products - that a friend of hers had lost their two racehorses because of Purina Ultium, but I didn't think too much of it, and just took the new feed home to Lira.
The next day, to my amazement, my girl was up at the gate, not laid out in the pasture. She was wobbly but up and "talking" to me. The vet came back out and examined her, discovered her eyes were horribly dilated. She was having muscle spasms in her rear legs, and concluded that she had ended up with organophosphate poisoning. My other two horses are housed in the same pasture with her and never had a problem, but they were never given the Purina food. We ran bloodwork which showed that her kidneys and liver were still functioning fine, which the vet suspected, since organophosphates target the neurological systems.
Lira is still recovering and improving, but it's a long, slow, ongoing process and I doubt that she will ever fully recover from this. I no longer had the bag or any food left to test by the time I put two and two together, but I believe with all my heart (as do my vet and farrier) that this was the problem. Please beware of this and other Purina products. I was told that there was a lawsuit pending against Purina over the racehorses that died but the food was never recalled, nor was I able to find any information whatsoever on what may have been going on with it at that time. I just wanted to warn others so maybe they won't have to go through what Lira and I have.

One puppy has been on 2 course of antibiotics at 4 months old, but he was losing so much fluid that I am concerned he will not recover. I just purchased a bag of Lamb and Rice Purina One dog food. I opened the bag and dished out 6 bowls of food. On the last scoop, I noticed a webbing. I went back and picked up the dog food bowls. There was webbing and maggots amongst the food! Needless to say, I instantly returned the food to the bag and took it back to the store. I spoke to both managers on staff and was informed that it was meal moth larvae and that they wished they didn't have to sell it because this has happened before! I can't stop scratching. I am so disgusted by the fact that worms were in my dogs' bowls and in my kitchen! They should not be allowed to sell dog food if they can't serve quality products. I will never buy Purina again!

I have two beautiful cats. Twix - a tiger cat, and Bella -a tuxedo cat. Twix I have had since a kitten, and Bella was a stray that I took in. I had been feeding my cats either Meow Mix or Purina Cat Chow hard food the entire time I have had them. They always seemed fine, except that I noticed Bella was gaining weight. I read up on all the info on different cat foods that I could find, and decided that Purina One Indoor Formula was a good choice for my cats. It wasn't overly expensive and seemed to have a very good ingredients list. I made the switch in April 2012.
One evening in May 2012, I came home to find Bella passed out on the floor. She was unresponsive when I called her. Finally, after shaking her extremely hard and screaming her name, she opened her eyes and looked at me. I rushed her to an emergency vet, who told me she had a high fever and gave her a shot of antibiotics. The vet said everything else was normal, and it was probably the fever that made her pass out.
The rest of the summer passed with no problems. Then on Sept. 17, 2012, Bella began coughing. At first I thought it was a hairball that she was having trouble getting up, so I gave her some mineral oil for a few nights. But the coughing was getting worse, and I could see the look of fear on her face. She was also withdrawing from me. She didn't like to be touched anymore, and spent most of her days on my dining room chair, which is not normal for her. I brought her to the vet, who said that it was probably an upper respiratory infection, and gave me a round of antibiotics. At first she seemed to respond, but then, she became worse - extremely lethargic and very distant, and coughing day and night. Again we went to the vet, and after doing a number of x-rays on her, he told me that there was nothing wrong with her heart or lungs. I took her back home.
I don't know why. I thought maybe it was the dry cat food making her sick, but all of a sudden it became so obvious. That night I stopped feeding them the Purina One cat food, and got them Science Diet. That was a week ago today, and Bella has made a complete turnaround. She is active and happy. She is sitting with me again at night and playing with Twix. And she is not coughing at all. I really believe that Purina One was killing my cat!
Oh, and as a side note, the entire time I was feeding my cats Purina One, Twix was not happy with it. He seemed to pick at the food all the time, and I found that he actually put most of his food into the water dish. He was also constantly begging for whatever food I was eating. Since switching to the Science Diet, he is eating better and not begging!

I recently bought a new bag of Kitten Chow. When tearing back the folds at the top of the package, I found several small yellow worms crawling around in the glue area just before the opening at the top. Yuck! There was also 1 on the end of the bag once the top was completely unfolded. They didn't appear to have gotten into the bag, so I didn't throw it out, but I will likely move on to a new brand of dry food next time. I'm not sure how the worm eggs (I'm sure that's incorrect terminology) got into the glue or packaging, but this is something that needs to be looked into at the plant.

I have two eleven-year-old labs, who have eaten Purina dry foods for the majority of their lives. However, after purchasing the One Beyond Chicken, one immediately came down with bloat on Thanksgiving morning and required emergency surgery. Thankfully, she is fine now after the $2800 surgery. Her brother began vomiting and experiencing diarrhea three days later. He now refuses to eat the Purina One Beyond, as well as his sister who is only eating Science Diet. My vet said that it is highly unusual for a dog of eleven to bloat. Purina should be ashamed. Their once good name is being ruined and I, for one, will never buy their products again. I will not jeopardize my dogs’ or seven cats’ lives.

I purchased a 6lb. bag of Purina One Beyond Lamb from Wal-Mart five days ago. I have a mini schnauzer and a 5-month old kitten. Our kitten likes to snack on the dog’s food even though he has his own kitten food up on a desk where the mini schnauzer cannot get to! On the third day of feeding this food, we woke up at 6:30 am to our mini schnauzer vomiting and having bloody liquid diarrhea. I am a vet tech and this was happening on a Sunday and our office is closed on Sundays. By 3pm, the kitten and our mini schnauzer were both having the bloody diarrhea and vomiting. I called our vet at home and he had me meet him at the clinic immediately. After several injections, activated charcoal, fluids, oral medications, blood work, physical exam, and fecal exam, our vet diagnosed them with salmonella poisoning.
Note that the kitten’s symptoms were not quite as severe as our schnauzers. Since the kitten is indoors, the only thing they could have both contracted the salmonella from is the Purina One Beyond Lamb and our vet agrees. He also said that would explain why the kitten’s case was not as severe because he just snacked on it rather than that being the only food he ate like our mini schnauzer. I thank God that from working at the vet I knew to act fast because who knows, if I would have waited a day or two, we could have lost our fur children. Please, everyone, be very careful when buying this dog food. I can say I will never buy any Purina food again and take a chance. From now on, the only pet food coming into our home will be Hills Science Diet or Royal Canin. We sell these at my work and at least I know I will not be feeding my pets poison!

I changed my dogs' food recently to Purina One, with the misconception that it wasn't a bad brand of food. I couldn't have been more wrong. My dog started having issues with the food the night I gave it to her and I gradually introduced it to her diet. 1st and 2nd night (starting her on Purina One), I noticed her stool seemed very soft and sort of lighter in color. Day 3, I came home from work to a disaster. She had what seemed like uncontrollable diarrhea. Knowing that these things happen and dogs, like humans, will get the runs every so often. My dog also seemed extremely needy, much more than usual. Day 4, explosive diarrhea but there was rather large amount of blood that accompanied the liquid feces and not far away from that, there was a big puddle of mucus and blood. I took pictures of the blood I was wiping from the floor.
Day 5, I took the day off work to go to the vet. He said that she has colitis and hopefully it's not long term. She was prescribed a week's worth of Metronidazole. In addition, I fed her rice with boiled chicken and a small amount of Purina One. During that week, while taking the prescription, she seemed a lot better. Not thinking that her bout of colitis could have been caused by Purina One, I stupidly fed it to her again. Two days after being off the prescription and back on a Purina One diet, we are right back at square one. She has bloody diarrhea again and is super antsy. I'm now certain that Purina One (Smart Blend Lamb and Rice Formula) is the culprit. I'll have to miss another day of work to go to the vet tomorrow.
It's ridiculous that Purina One Smart Blend has had so many similar complaints, but nothing has been done to fix the issue. The CDC website states, "When two or more people get the same illness from the same contaminated food or drink, the event is called a food-borne outbreak." Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that we need to follow those same guidelines, but I do feel that the issue is being completely ignored and Purina is getting away with, in some cases, murder (so to speak). My dog depends on me to feed her everyday. As her owner, it's my responsibility to feed her, care for her and keep her healthy. Can anyone tell me how I'm supposed to do that when companies like Purina claim that their dog food provides complete nutrition when it's really poison?

One of my friends and I just spent two weeks traveling with our three dogs. We were in a remote area and ran out of our usual dog food, Taste of the Wild, and purchased a bag of Purina One, Lamb and Rice formula. All was well for three days, thankfully the day we returned home. My friend's 18-month-old purebred dog became very ill, and we took her to our vet clinic. A definite diagnosis could not be made, but even the doctors were guarded about her recovery. She was hospitalized for 36 hours in intensive care and quarantine with IV fluids constantly. She has been home for 24 hours and slowly recovering.
Guess what? Today, my five-year-old Toy Poodle became sick with the same symptoms. I rushed him to the vet hospital, and he was given meds for nausea and fluids. That is when we both started checking on the dog food and reading the label closely. We cannot prove it but feel pretty confident that the Purina One is to blame. We have now collectively paid hundreds of dollars to treat these dogs. My larger dog is OK, but I immediately replaced his food today. I read carefully the ingredients label on the Purina One product, and it is loaded with gluten (by other names) and grains and other junk that make me sick when I eat the human versions that are also often hidden in our food system. I am going to call Purina in the morning and ask for at least a refund on this lousy and dangerous product and at most for a recall or change of ingredients.

When it started, I did some research on cat ailments and concluded it was food. I changed his food immediately and lumps started to disappear and the first bloody patch of hair loss started healing. It healed over 1 week. The newest patch stopped looking bloody and grew scabs, healing well. 2 weeks later I bought more food and completely missed it was from Purina. After less than a week, his lumps were back and fur falling out again, patches all bloody and painful to the touch.

She has had some skin rashes since being inside, but the biggest thing was spitting up, I call it, and there would be the red kibbles of the Little Bites in it more than 14 hours after she ate. She had very bad breath and almost black poop. I've switched to a grain-free food (a high rating on Dog Food Advisor website). She is acting like she feels much better, poops better and the bad breath issue cleared up. The vet said it was not normal for the red kibbles to be undigested after that length of time.
I'm expecting a recall soon. This was just weird. She had been eating Little Bites for 3 years and nothing that I know of like this before. I think she was bloated from undigested food, her stomach seems smaller now. She definitely feels better and plays a lot more. Please beware of this food!

I followed a Facebook link and read the post written by Stephanie from Fenton, MO. Reading about the progression of sickness of Princess was heartbreaking, along with all of the other beloved pets within the complaints regarding Beneful. We were feeding Purina Pro Plan, a food we began serving our first dog in 1986, when it first came available in Veterinary offices only. It was not a cheap choice. We had tried a couple of other top shelf foods over the years when an issue would arise, but would end up back on a different formula of Pro Plan.
We lost two Brittany Spaniels this past year, six weeks apart. Our female, Lexie, had been healthy but had always looked and treated her food strangely. In hindsight, it is a terrible thought that she probably knew it wasn't good for her. Since some of the dynamics in our home had changed slightly, we didn't get too concerned when her behavior altered some. For a couple of weeks prior to her passing, she preferred to sleep long daytime hours in our attached garage during a bitter cold spell. Her mate, Ruskin, had been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease two years prior so the increased symptoms led us to believe it was a progression of his CD. When Lexie displayed signs of illness, we rushed her to the vet. Several hundred dollars of tests and x-rays later, the cause was still unconfirmed. Further blood tests would show food toxicity as a probable cause. She died at home two days after visiting the vet. We began feeding a Raw Prey Diet within two weeks of Lexie's death. Unfortunately, Ruskin had developed diabetic like symptoms due to the high sugar content in the Pro Plan. When that sugar was taken away through the raw diet, his seizures increased. He passed at home during a seizure in March.
Please use Consumer Affairs to your benefit and research any new food you might decide to feed. I saw Stephanie was feeding Blue Buffalo, which is also the food that was being fed to a dog we fostered for a relative this summer. It also is on the list of bad food! Before we started our Raw Prey Model Diet, we began with Honest Kitchen, a dehydrated food supplemented with raw. It is a little more expensive but came highly recommended by a breeder friend in CA. With the right resources, feeding a raw diet is healthier and less expensive than Kibble. Use Google and Facebook to find resources in your area to buy with a co-op.

Our dog extremely got sick from Purina dog food. Do not buy. Recently, our 2-year-old Boston started trying to avoid eating the chicken and rice flavor we had been feeding him for 6 months. He began sniffing and scraping pieces of food out of the bowl onto the floor, then he would slowly sniff a kibble or two then eat some little by little. This is not how our dog eats. He usually bends over the bowl and chows down! Over the past week, he has been throwing up a lot. Moping around the house and acting very lethargic; not the energetic Boston terrier he was the previous week. It got very scary when he just fell down onto the floor and couldn't keep his eyes open. He even lost 4 pounds.
I had a very bad feeling that something was wrong with the food, so we took him to the vet and they suggested cooking him real rice and boiled chicken to help his stomach. After a few days of feeding him that, he started to perk up. My wife tried to feed him the Purina food again a few days after, and he literally backed away from the bag. So we switched to a completely different brand stocked by a local dog food store, and our Boston ate it like he hadn't eaten in days. He is getting better. I'm extremely shocked and angry to see so many similar complaints about Purina pet food products. This sounds like an NBC dateline investigation needs to be done on Purina. I can't fathom to think what they're actually feeding our pets. Something needs to be done about this now.

I rescued a Boston Terrier last year from the North American Boston Terrier Rescue. My guy was extremely healthy and received a thorough vet examination last year walking away with a clean bill of health. The Rescue fed all dogs and pups in their care Purina One and suggested I keep my Boston on the regimen and I did because he seemed to be doing fine with the food. Fast forward when we went for his well-dog exam and he received another glowing review from the vet and another bill of good health, I purchased a brand new bag of Purina One Smartblend Chicken & Rice Dry Dog Food from our local Denver King Soopers.
My guy was reluctant to eat the food. He picked out portions and spit pieces out in a pile on the side of the floor. Eventually he ate the food, and instantly became ill, vomiting clear foamy liquid at first and by the second day he was vomiting food. This continued on to day three and this time he was weak and barely able to keep one eye completely open. I thoroughly investigated our back yard to search for anything new he may have gotten a hold of. I took him to the vet and they examined him, took blood, and weren't able to find anything abnormal. He did suggest that perhaps the dog developed an "allergy" to his food.
After a week transition on boiled chicken and rice, I decided to switch him away from Purina entirely after hearing horror stories about people receiving "bad batches" of food. I am convinced now after reading this thread, the Purina food was the culprit. Butch (my guy) has since been eating Nutro dog food and hasn't encountered any stomach problems to date. I feel fortunate that I don't share some of the other sad stories other pet owners endured. Shame on Purina!

On June 5, 2012, I bought a new bag of Purina Friskies Indoor Delights for my 5 cats. I opened the bag and fed them some the next morning. Four of the cats ignored the food and went out the window to roam around the front yard. The fifth cat wolfed down a full bowl before going outside to play. About 15 to 20 minutes later, I was on the telephone when she came back inside and jumped onto the kitchen table. She stumbled several steps and appeared to convulse before falling off of the table and voiding her bowels. She was crying and panting very heavily, her eyes were darting back and forth, and she was unable to walk because she couldn't bear weight on her hind legs.
I rushed her to the vet who had no idea what was going on. We both assumed that she had gotten into something outside. She stayed with the vet overnight and because of lack of funds for ongoing care, I took her home the next day. She was unable to walk well and could not take foods on her own. I fed her liquids through a small syringe for about 5 days.
She became ill on Tuesday. Then on Thursday, another of my cats started vomiting and stayed sick all night long. On Friday morning, I was sitting in my recliner saying "Dear God, why are my cats getting sick?" Then, I noticed one of my cats sitting in front of one of their food dishes. He was pulling pieces of food from the dish with his paw, sniffing them thoroughly, and then either eating them, or discarding them into a small pile that he had accumulated on the floor. I noticed that although I had not filled the bowls since Tuesday, three of the five were still full. It was then that I realized that something was wrong with the food. I immediately removed the food, but about 30 minutes later he was throwing up also.
I filed a claim with Purina and finally heard from their settlement office yesterday. They told me that while they have received no other complaints and are not responsible for my cats being ill, they will pay half of my vet bill. Today, I started doing some research and found multiple complaints. I contacted Purina directly and told them that I fully expect that my entire vet bill will be paid and for them to provide wellness care for my three cats for the next year. Additionally, I told them to send me a shipping label to return the rest of the contaminated food to them. They had told me to throw it away. I told them that it would be irresponsible and unconscionable of me to put that crap in a landfill. I'll let you know what happens.

I had a Bullmastiff named Mugsie. We got her at age 3, after the owner could no longer care for him due to divorce. The original owner gave us all his paperwork from the breeder he had bought him from, the vet they used and AKC paperwork. He was a very expensive dog, shows quality, both parents had been evaluated for health issues that might be passed on to any pups they had, and a clean bill of health for both parents as well as the litter of pups. We took him to our vet for a regular check up and booster shots, all was perfect. About 2 years after we started feeding him Purina dog food, he got ill. The vet thought he may have been poisoned while out in our fenced yard. Blood work, x-rays, etc., to the tune of $800.00 and they found nothing.
We changed dog food as he was refusing to eat. He got better, so we slowly reintroduced the Purina dog food. Again, he started acting funny and became ill. Back to the vet. More tests, more money and nothing was found. Again we changed the food, again he got better. Back to the Purina and we were awakened in the wee hours of the morning to a thump. Mugsie had collapsed in the front hall, he had a temp, very warm and dry noise, shaking, scared and nervous acting. Then he started drooling. I know now he was seizing, but I didn't know that then. My boyfriend told me to call the vet and get him another appointment when he opened and went off to work.
I called the vet. They said to bring him in asap. Well at 180lbs, I couldn't pick him up and move him into my pickup truck's backseat by myself, so I called him and he came home to help me. Poor Muggs was so ill and weak. He'd try to get up and walk but could only make 2 or 3 steps, then collapse panting and exhausted. I talked to him, tried coaxing him. He was wagging his tail with a thump, thump then just drift off. We got him to the vet. They took him out back and started an IV and did more blood work. They told us to leave him and come back in a couple of hours. If they found anything in the meantime, they'd call us. We barely got home (a 10-minute ride from the vet) when the phone started ringing. His blood work showed major kidney failure, unreal considering he had just gotten a check up and rabies booster shot 2 months before and was given a clean bill of health.
They were going to try a couple things to save him, but we were told not to get our hopes up. A couple hours later, we got the call that there was nothing they could do. He was too far gone and we should put him to sleep to ease his suffering. His condition was going to become far more painful both to him and for us to watch until he passed. I cried like a baby while we decided what to do. My boyfriend dug his grave out back under Mugg's favorite tree. He loved to lay under when outside with us and we went back to the vet to be with him. We loved on him while they put the IV in his leg for the meds to put him to sleep. I cried the entire time and he kept trying to lift his head and look at me. He was so weak he could barely lift it, but managed to lay his head on my lap and almost smile up at me, like he knew what was coming and knew we were having a very hard time with it.
They injected the meds, he looked at us, closed his eyes, let out one last big sigh and was gone. I burst into tears and was a basket case all the way home. I helped bury him in our backyard and just sat there for hours wondering what the hell had happened to our baby dog. It took quite awhile to make the connection with the food, after we took in a second Bullmastiff, a rescue we picked up in upstate NY, 5 hours from home, about 2 years after we buried Muggs. He was thin but healthy. We took him to our vet to have him checked to make sure and get shots updated for him. He got a clean bill of health and I was told to feed him a bit extra to put a few pounds on him.
We started feeding him the Purina dog food with a bit extra added to it, so he'd get back up to his normal weight. It didn't take long before he had gained the weight back and was looking good. We were mixing his food 2/3 what he was on at the foster home with 1/3 Purina. Slowly, we lowered the cheap dog food amt and increased the Purina until he was on all Purina. Knowing bully breeds can be prone to digestive issues, gas, bloating, twisted gut from wolfing down the food too quickly, etc., we wanted to make sure we avoided those issues if at all possible while switching his food to what we thought was a better quality, far better for him food. Yeah right!
As soon as he was on 100% Purina, he started having issues - vomiting, the runs, excessive thirst, drooling more than Bullmastiffs usually do. Then, he started staggering and falling over. I kept thinking, "Wow, is this dog clumsy? What a klutz. Nothing like our Muggs was at all." Very lazy, laying around. When he did get up to walk to the door and ask for out, he acted like it took all the energy he had just to get to the door. He'd get there and lay down. I noticed his nose was dry and warm, eyes were dull and lifeless. I said oh no, not again! I called the vet. Again I was told he most likely was poisoned, but how? We were never outside off leash. We didn't put him out in the fenced yard without one of us out there. We didn't want him to think he was being abandoned yet again.
The foster home we got him from had told us he was taken from a home where he was chained out back to a tree - no food, very little water and no shelter in rain, heat or cold. Once he had gotten to our home, he was allowed on the couch as are all my dogs and sat almost on top of whoever sat down, making sure we weren't going to just leave him there alone. If I get up to go to the kitchen or bathroom, he followed me. If I closed the bathroom door, he'd headbutt it until it popped open or sit there whining until I came out. If I took a bath, he'd sit beside the tub and lay his chin on the side of the tub and just watch me until I got out. He was literally, constantly my side, so how could anyone have fed him anything? And if they did, why did none of the other dogs get ill when Rocky did?
Before taking in Rocky, we had taken in a 5-year old rescued yellow lab and a 2-year old Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix from a puppy mill that had been busted and later, a Chihuahua/mini Schnauzer mix puppy just under 1 year old. None of the others had gotten ill at all. They all ate the same food, out of the same dishes, at the same time. Usually (which was extremely cute to see), the teeny dogs standing between the giant dog's front feet and eating from the same bowl, behind his huge head and chin and same water bowls. They slept together and played in the same fenced yard together, and were never left outside alone. The vet was called and told us bring him in asap. The same type of testing was done on him as was done on Muggs, with the same results. Kidney failure and they didn't think he had long to live.
He started seizing, they medicated him to keep him calm, slow down the number of seizures and keep him as comfy as they could. More testing, same results. Nothing they could do but try to keep him comfy until he passed or we could have him put to sleep and spare him more seizures and pain. He had been vomiting, having liquid bowel movements involuntarily, drooling and panting. His eyes' looked glazed, like he had no idea where he was or who was with him. We were sent home to decide what we wanted to do. Again we dug a grave, right beside Mr. Muggs, under the big tree and drove back to the vet's office.
We sat with him in the vet's lounge/visitor's room with couches and big doggie bean bag chairs while they got everything ready. Again, I cried my eyes out. He had been with us about 2 years when this happened. Not as long as Mr. Muggs had been with us, but I was just about as attached to him. He went everywhere I did just like Muggs had, 24/7. He was my shadow. He was so out of it I'm not sure he realized what was going on, just that mamma was sad. He turned his head, looked up at me, licked my hand and closed his eyes. We brought him home and buried him wondering why they both had to die. It finally hit me while I was sitting out there sobbing. The dog food! It had to be it. I called the vet back and talked to him about it. He said it was quite possible and most probable that's what it was, but without specifically checking for it by doing an autopsy, he couldn't say 100% without a doubt that it's what killed them by causing their kidney and liver failure.
Money was extremely tight at the time. We were in danger of losing our house so we opted not to have the autopsy done on either dog (I was quoted an extremely high price for each autopsy. Thankfully my boyfriend's business picked up and all is back on track financially. We still have the 2 small dogs (Scooter the chi/shih tzu and Button the chi/mini schnauzer) and the yellow lab (Major). All are fine and perfectly healthy spoiled brats. As soon as I made the connection to the food, we stopped feeding it to the rest of the crew and none have suffered any ill affects that have shown up in their annual checkups and blood work. Fingers crossed that it stays that way. Back when the bullies got ill, the others had thrown up a few times. Button had a gagging issue/cough from time to time, which I thought was kennel cough or some type of allergy. I had it checked out and nothing was found. It has disappeared since we switched the dog food from Purina.
I certainly hope no more people have to go through what we did. Those 2 big dogs were like my kids (I have 4 kids and my boyfriend has 2, all grown up and moved out with families of their own). My answer to the empty nest syndrome so many of us, moms, go through when the last kiddo leaves home. I will forever miss my big guys and mourn their loss at such young ages. I know giant breed dogs don't tend to live very long lives, but 7 years and 4 yrs old is far too young and totally senseless. It could have and should have been prevented. Like one previous poster stated, I too grew up with the Purina brand name and trusted it completely, never gave it a second thought. I now read labels on pet food as carefully as I do people food.
They should be made to pay for killing off so many people's beloved pets and family members, but I'm not sure any amount of money would help ease the pain and sorrow I went through. I am still going through over the loss of my 2 big guys. RIP Mugsie (aka Mr. Muggs, aka baby dog) and Rocky (aka rocketman).

My dogs got really sick on this stuff (Purina One Chicken and Rice). We had used it for a while; no problems. Then, the last 2 bags have been horrible. Our Dobie had runny stool and pooped in the house. He never does that. They were black, tar-like, and smelled horrible. Poor thing… He would ignore his bowl for a meal and then our border collie did the same thing (i.e., head down, low tail, and fever). After reading these reviews, I saw so many things that I recognized as symptoms mine were having. I took them to the vet and they had bacterial infections and the vet gave them Cipro. So for the next few days, they are eating homemade stewed chicken and rice. I took my bags back to Wal-Mart and have no idea what kind of food I am going to be getting. My vet said Science Diet was a good one, but it was 52 dollars a bag for a large bag. It might be cheaper to make our own and Missing Link Plus for the minerals. It is time-consuming, but I might do it if I can. Throw your Purina products away. Someone put it on Facebook! I don’t have fb.

Approximately 3 days after starting Purina Veterinary OM dog food for overweight management, my dog started to drool excessively. Initially, I thought it was some topical treatment for skin irritation, but the more I read about my dog's symptoms, I think it has to do with the dog food. She has been to the vet numerous times to rule out digestive disorders and even had an endoscopy which showed severe small intestine inflammation. She is able to drink, but is not able to eat solid food. She is losing weight, but not in a healthy way. I would like to know what type of microorganisms might be causing these symptoms. What has something to do with the dog food to call such a severe reaction? I don't want to lose my dog. I wish someone would just come forward be honest about the dog food.

Purina SmartBlend Lamb and Rice killed my dog. In 2010, one of my dogs began acting odd. Head down when he walked, refusing to eat, refusing to drink, had to be helped outside, the list goes on. The vet was called and we were told he had a severe liver infection and was having seizures. Meds were given and he seemed to be getting better. Then my other dog started refusing to eat. I thought this is odd. They have been on the Purina lamb and rice for years and loved it. Then I noticed this was a new formula with meaty chunks. I began paying attention to my dogs eating habits. I started having to doctor up the food by putting shredded cheese in it to get them to eat. Koolie, the dog that was having issues, started getting worse again. This time vomiting up the most vile and disgusting things I had ever seen. He could no longer hold his bowels or urine and just laid there.
The vet came out again, gave more meds and he was doing better. That night, he died. I called Purina after I began researching and found that many other dogs became sick and/or died while on this food. Of course, I heard the "This is the first time we have ever heard of it." They promised to reimburse my vet fees. I am still waiting. I even sent them a sample of the food. I called not too long ago and they closed my case. I am so sick of this company killing pets. It is not just dog food - it is cat food now too. Do a search on the web, find out all the complaints and yet Purina still mass produces a product that is killing pets. This food needs pulled and the company shut down or fined to the point of bankruptcy. I will never ever purchase any product that is manufactured by Purina. They are killing our pets!

I fed my dog Purina One Smartblend (beef and rice). "Smartblend" is a line marketed as natural and they give it that organic healthy vibe - they claim it has omega-3 and antioxidants. The second day on the food, my dog was lethargic. No big deal, I've seen him tired before. But that night as I slept with him I noticed his stomach was lurching (I don’t know how to describe what was doing on but there he had what appeared a pain in his stomach - I'd never seen this behavior). On the third day - only day three! - he could barely walk. I have never seen this. I had to drag him outside for a walk and he would just do the head-down shuffle. It seemed to me at the time that he had pain in his legs. I knew there was more to the problem when later that day he would not accept a treat. This I could not believe. Never in his entire 8 years has he turned down a treat. It was obviously the food, because on day four, I took him off this poison and he slowly got well (about 3 days back to normal).
I called Purina’s customer service and told them about the issue. They said they were unaware of complaints for this particular line. This is obviously a lie because I did a simple Google search five minutes prior to the call and I came across many complaints similar to my own and some much worse. I told her this and I was upset and she took my information. I later got a call from a supervisor of customer care. She acted sincere, as though she cared. She even knew about this ConsumerAffairs web page and all the complaints. Her response: "We just have no way of contacting every customer that complains on there.” That was when I just lost it on her. Really? No way of contacting? There's a button under each review that allows for a business response!
And talk about passing the responsibility off?! That's like being a hit and run driver in the night and then saying, “Well, I just had no way of contacting the person I ran over." It's pretty clear to me that this company is passing off severely inferior food as "healthy" in order to maximize profits and ignoring the more astute complaints, such as those on this page. I am not standing for it - I'm starting a campaign today beginning with a boycott Facebook page. If anyone wants to jump on board, email me at **.

During week two, he was vomiting and having diarrhea. I took him to the vet and he was on stool hardening meds along with anti-vomiting meds. For 3+ years I've fed my cat, Baby, with Purina cat food products. I began feeding Baby Fancy Feast per her satisfaction and never experienced any problems. In an effort to take better care of my cat, I stopped giving Baby Fancy Feast and switched to Purina One. I was under the assumption Purina One was a more healthy option due to its natural ingredients and its focus on improving my pet's health. My switch to Purina One was a conscious decision because I trusted the company. Purina brands itself as a company who specializes and cares for the health of animals and since I did not experience any problems prior, I thought it would be smart to stay loyal.
My switch to Purina One occurred during the month of December 2011. The first 2 to 3 months went very well. I didn't experience any problems with transitioning Baby from Fancy Feast to Purina One. It was around the end of the 3rd month that I first learned of my cat's behavioral problem. She was soiling in random places in my home. My pet is potty trained, it only took 15 minutes, and I've never had this sort of issue until now. Through 2 to 3 doctor visits (shots, medicine, etc.) and a talk with a rep from local Humane Society (as I was going to give up on her), it was suggested maybe I should try separating the litter box a greater distance from her food. I've tried many, many solutions and my cat's diarrhea only boils down to one - Purina One. I've switched litters, moved her box, and even made the effort put in new litter daily. It has to be Purina One at this point. Baby's diarrhea is so bad she can't make it to the bathroom unless I carry her there. I'm done with Purina One. I feel like such an idiot for not realizing it sooner.

I'm tired of these huge corporations sticking it to the American people because they can. My wife was filling up the dog feeder and realized that the bag (Purina One Healthy Formula for dogs) she bought was not 18.5 lbs anymore; now it is 16.5 lbs. So they reduced the amount by 2 lbs which is outrageous, and they're not reducing the price, even though you say 2 lbs is not much. But if you take into consideration that 2.5 million bags are sold per year and take that amount they reduced which is 2 pounds and times that by 2.5 million, it comes to 5 million lbs. Then divide that by 16.5 lbs. That is 303030, then multiply that by $19.95. Their profile comes to over $6,045,448.50. Now, times that by 30 different types of dog food they sell. It's $181,363,455.00.
Now you tell me that the cost of production went up that much to do this to us, consumers. It's **. They are ripping us off, and we need to stand up to this crap. By the time it reaches 2030, we will be paying $49.95 of 10.5 lbs of bag food. This is not the only company doing this to us. It is happening all over, and we are allowing them to do this and just say "Well, if I want my fruit loops, I guess I need to allow them to downsize." Let's stand up against this large corporation corruption.

I just took my ill cat to the vet as he was limping, twitching, repeatedly licking himself, excessive drool on and around his mouth, and 2 mouth lesions/ulcers on his tongue. Just suddenly he became sick on Monday night. It dawned on me that it must be the food. I got the Pro Plan food from PetSmart for free as I adopted a young cat from a cat rescue company. So I thought, well just use it up. My young guy is okay, but my 9 year old, not so much. So at the vet's they gave him a steroid and antibiotic shot and took blood work. The blood work came back 100% healthy except the white blood cell count, which is due to the lesions in his mouth, so it makes sense. But I'm sure the food caused this! I immediately switched him back to the amazing dehydrated Honest Kitchen 'Prowl' food that he's been thriving on for over a year. What was I thinking giving him that garbage Purina food, and why is it allowed on shelves?! They owe me $360, as far as I'm concerned.

I got a reply within three days and they did say they would look into the issue. They had the bag of food info from my initial email and then they asked for the name and the address of where I had purchased the cat food. I, like one other person here, had called the store too where I had purchased the food and the manager told me also, that this happens particularly at this time of the year! Well, I have had pets since I was a small child and I am now 58 and I have never seen anything like this with any cat food I have ever purchased. I also told Purina that.
Purina did send me coupons which I have used to purchase just basic kitty chow. And I did purchase a new bag of the Sensitive System food from a different store and so far no problems. So, I highly recommend to anyone having problems with any food, go to the manufacturer and report it. I feel so bad about those whose pets have died. Thanks to Dog Food Adviser, I now realize the difference between bad, adequate and excellent pet foods. I have been feeding Purina One to all my dogs for years, recently switching to Purina One Beyond. I also added Pedigree pouches to enhance the taste for my two current Yorkies, not knowing that it is one of the worst of the worst. I thought I was giving them something good for them, only to find that I have been paying a premium for really sub-standard food. Shortly after switching to Purina Beyond, one of my Yorkies had a severe attack of extreme gastrointestinal distress, extreme bloody diarrhea and vomiting pure blood. The emergency vet told me she was literally expelling the lining of her intestines. She spent two days in the hospital on IV fluids, multiple antibiotics, etc. to the tune of $1100.
The vet said they didn't know what causes her condition. So not thinking it was her food, I kept her on the Beyond. A month later, she was fine, then one morning started vomiting and pooping blood. I rushed her to the vet for more antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids - another $200. Both past Friday mornings, she has thrown up and/or had diarrhea. I am convinced she is allergic to this food. My other Yorkie has had no issues. I have taken them both off of all current foods and crappy treats I've been giving them and putting them on hamburger and rice with small amounts of Origen to transition to a total Origen diet and acceptable treats with no harmful ingredients. Yes, it is more expensive, but for $1200, I could have bought a lot of dog food. I will never buy any substandard food or treats again. It's just not worth it.

I returned the bag and contacted Purina. I understand that this is more than likely unintentional. But these moths are attracted to grains - corn, wheat, rice, etc. This was an eye opener. Purina food is made of so much grain that moths will manage to get inside this sealed bag for it. I've switched my cats to Blue Buffalo Wilderness, a grain free food. Not only do they eat much less food because it is so nutrient dense, but they have shimmer and softer coats and healthier bodies.

I am here to try and get answers as to why my cat got sick, and after reading what "Loretta from OK" posted (and many others whose pet got sick), I believe I have found the answer. I had my cat on Purina One Sensitive Systems for about 6 months now after switching from "Nutro Max Cat Senior" to "save a few buck". Now, I realize what a horrible mistake I made. I purchased the 7 lb. bag at my local Walmart. Within 1-2 days of feeding from the new bag, she began vomiting profusely. It looked as if she ate/vomited, ate/vomited throughout the day while I was at work.
I took up the food for the night and tried to give her some the next morning, with the same result. I took her to the vet, and we decided to treat her "symptomatically", giving her a shot of an antibiotic, and a shot for the vomiting, thinking it was some sort of virus she picked up. This was last Saturday, and throughout the weekend, she was on a "bland diet" that I cooked for her that she kept down just fine. A few days later, I tried her back on the Sensitive System food again. Within 10 minutes of eating it, she threw it all back up. I called Purina One's consumer line and talked to a "Josh", who took down the info from the bag and supposed looked it up to see if there had been any complaints. Apparently, he didn't find any because he asked me what her age was, had she been eating faster than usual. He then said, "I can't see a reason why this would happen," and offered me a "replacement coupon".
After reading this blog, it is crystal clear to me as I suspected from the onset it's the food that made her sick! They are sending me a "refund check" for the food because I refuse to buy any more of their products. She's still not eating right (she's even refused to eat the food that I had her on before I switched), so I bought a bag of "Evo dry food" because I heard about how good it is. She's eating it, cautiously, but apparently likes it and is tolerating it well. There should be a recall of this food so that no other beloved pet has to suffer!

Last month we purchased the large bag of the Purina ONE SMARTBLEND Healthy Puppy Formula. Upon opening the bag, I noticed a moth or two. I thought nothing of it. I poured the food into our tightly sealed dog food container. Two days later, I had my daughter fill the dog bowl up and she freaked out. There were moths and maggoty-type worms all throughout the dog food, which I am hoping would explain the runny poop over those few days of the initial scoops. My dogs are 5 pounds and 10 pounds. They love this food. But I love my dogs and will not feed them this product again. I still have the container of food in my garage as I am unsure what to do with it. I opened it for the first time this week and almost threw up - it was covered in worms and cocoons. I’m thinking the whole thing is going in the trash. I’m contacting my vet on Monday.

We purchased a 44-lb bag of Purina dog food on Sunday, 6/17. We have always fed our dog the same food, and he does not get human food. After feeding him on Sunday, he almost instantly began vomiting and wouldn't eat nor drink for about 2-3 days. So on Thursday, I began searching the internet; and I found all these complaints describing exactly the same thing as what happened to my pet. I called Purina, and they told me there had been no complaints regarding the food and just offered to send me coupon towards another bag of food?! They did say that the ingredients had changed in the last month. Has anyone else called them?

We recently switched from Kibbles and Bits to Purina Little Bites. We had been feeding our Terrier K&B for 5 years and recently switched to your Little Bites. After a few short weeks (3), she started becoming less and less playful and became lethargic and her stool changed colors and became softer and eventually runny. I have to wonder if the lot of this brand isn't/wasn't tainted. Our baby passed on 6-20-12 and I really believe it had something to do with your product being bad. I'm not saying all Purina products are bad, but I truly feel and want to find out if her food had something wrong with it. I really wanted this to read better but the fact that I am dealing with the passing of my best friend, this is it for now.

My 9-year-old golden retriever has been eating Purina Fit and Trim for approximately 3 years. About a month ago, after I bought a fresh 20 pound bag and started feeding it to him, he became very finicky about his food and didn't want to eat. We are still fighting this battle a month later. I've tried other food, but it has been a struggle to get him to eat. He has been to the vet on 3 separate occasions, and has been on 2 different antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his GI tract. He's still not better and has lost at least ten pounds. We are convinced that this infection came from his food, and I'm afraid we may lose him, because his appetite is still very poor. Maybe there should be a recall?

We have fed our dog Purina ONE all of his life. We started feeding it to him this past Tuesday, 6/12/12. Since then he has had diarrhea and vomiting for the past 4 days (it started Tuesday night). He had nothing else to eat but the Purina (no treats, no human food). I'm afraid this is a tainted lot. I kept thinking it must have been something else, but as it has continued and he has had nothing but dog food, it must be the dog food. He has never been sick for so long.
He is perhaps a little lethargic, but it’s hard to tell in a Whippet - they tend to sleep a lot. We stopped the dog food yesterday and bought a different Purina ONE (chicken and rice - small bag) at the grocery to make sure it was from a different batch than the one we bought at Costco. He seems to be somewhat better after a day of the new food. I hope to call Purina ONE on Monday. I'm really concerned, especially after reading similar recent stories that there is a processing problem. We've never had a problem before in 11 years, so I'm not ditching Purina - but I would like to know that they can find and fix the problem so this isn't an issue again. I'm really, really tired of cleaning up the poopy mess!

The food is coming up in the same shape as before eaten but wet along with tons of water and grass from her eating it. She is constantly thirsty and is hungry but will not eat her food. She has begun limping on her front left leg and has become less active and lethargic.
After reading these posts on here tonight, I have pulled her dog food Bar Code Reads: 17800-1738 and bag is stamped: 207610851733L04, will be taking her to the vet in the morning for antibiotics and will be contacting Purina. Prior to May, I purchased the Fancy Feast Classic Seafood combination cases. Last month (May), I purchased the case with only Ocean Whitefish and Tuna. Several days after giving it to my cats, they both developed very bad smelling diarrhea. It didn't occur to me at that time it could be the food since they had that flavor before. However, when it continued for another week, I took them to the vet. She tested both for parasites and it came back negative. In the meantime, I took them off the Fancy Feast and the diarrhea cleared up immediately. The vet agreed it was probably something with the food. I gave it to them one more time to see what would happen, and the diarrhea came back again, so they are off Fancy Feast forever. They have, luckily, recovered.
I contacted Fancy Feast and offered to send the cans back to them to test and they said to just throw them away. They did send me coupons, but at this point, I'm not sure if I can trust their products (or at least the Whitefish and Tuna). However, I have absolutely no luck in finding any testing site for the cat food. I saved the cans from the same lot number of course - turns out Nestle Purina pays lots of testing labs much money for research and consequently the labs will not offer testing of its products (Also why few labs will test human food - too much money from the corporations to bother with a few of us humans or pets.). I have no idea yet whether the cats will recover fully, or remain with damage. I have no idea what it was that poisoned them. After a lot of phone calls, emails, vet reports and time, Purina (Canada) has offered me $150 towards my $300+ vet bill as a "goodwill gesture". They said this was not an admission of responsibility on their behalf, so I won the battle but not the war so to speak! The insurance rep called today to tell me the check has been mailed out. I am very relieved to be receiving anything! As for Nylablue, she has finally made a full recovery and the past 2 weeks she has been eating, playing and doing all things 'cat'!
My suggestion to anyone having trouble with Purina is to contact them. Be reasonable. Provide vet proof of illness and ask for assistance. Some of my faith in their company has been restored! I took him to the vet and they said after running lab work that his liver tests were all elevated. They put him on a broad spectrum antibiotic, anti-nausea meds and sent us to a specialist. We then, a couple of days later, took him to a specialist to find out that he has thickening of the large intestines and liver counts are up.
We have spent over $1300 to help figure out what is going on with our dog. They suspect it is something he is eating or ate. The vet kept asking me what dog food he eats and after figuring out what the last bag was and researching the internet, I think I can figure out what is wrong with our dog. His dog food is killing him! It has been a long week and I take him back in tomorrow to have all of his blood work rechecked and see how he is progressing. Approximately one month ago, we bought our dog food from the Walmart in Washington, Pennsylvania. We usually alternate between Purina Pro Plan Chicken & Rice and Lamb & Rice, as our 16 month basset mix, Ace, has taken a liking to both flavors. This time around was the lamb and rice we had purchased. That evening, when we fed him his supper, he did not eat nor did he eat it for breakfast or at all throughout the day. It was not until about 9PM that night that he touched his food at all. The next day, he was lethargic and slept all day. He seemed himself almost entirely, except for his extra exhaustion. He was fine throughout the week, but continued to avoid eating his food until he was very hungry.
The following week, my fiance noticed a small amount of mucus-like blood in his stool. I told him we would keep watch for a week and if it did not clear up, we would call the vet. It happened one other time the next day, but seemingly cleared up entirely. At the end of that week, Friday evening, I returned home from work to find extremely soft, dark, blood laden stool. I immediately called the vet and left a message stating that we would be in Monday morning as soon as possible. By Monday morning, his stool had cleared up and became more solid again. I brought both the bloody stool sample and the solid stool sample to the vet with me. He said that the stool was free of parasites, which I was grateful of. He also said that there was a lot of cellulose in it, meaning that Ace was eating a lot of grasses. He was doing that instead of eating his dry food.
The vet said he seemed to be fine and physically looked like a healthy dog. He recommended that we put him on a boiled rice and hamburger diet for one week to help clear out his digestive system. We finished the hamburger diet last Thursday and put him back on his solid food. Again Saturday morning, his stool had bloody mucus in it. I decided to buy a small bag of Purina Pro Plan Chicken and Rice to test out, thinking maybe we got a bad "batch". So far, he seems to be fine and his stool is solid and clear of any blood. It had only been a few days but his energy levels are up and he is eating his food regularly again. After reading these reviews, however, I am taking him off of Purina brands entirely starting tonight. Hopefully, he maintains his good health.
I love my dog as much or more than some people love their children. I feel horrible for those who lost their pets to something like this. It is unacceptable for poor quality food to make it to the truck, let alone, the shelf. Hopefully, Purina sees this soon enough before more loved ones are lost.

I had been buying Purina One Healthy Puppy formula for my pup, Larry. He was doing very well on it and I was satisfied with how he was doing. One of my primary drivers for buying this food was the fact that lamb was the primary ingredient and based on my previous experience, lamb was much better on dog's stomachs than most other foods. I just bought another bag recently and began feeding it to Larry and a couple of days later, I noticed his appetite had dwindled. I was concerned, but monitored him. He was still eating, but not as much. Then unexpectedly one night, he had diarrhea all over the bed. I took him outside and he proceeded to vomit and not move much for a half hour. I brought him back in the house and yet more vomiting.
After all of this, I had no choice but to take him to the vet and they did not find anything wrong physically (no viruses, blockage, etc.), so I looked at his food. Lo and behold, Purina changed from a lamb-based product to a chicken-based product. The packaging did say this, but it was in very small font and it gave absolutely no indication on the package that the formula had changed. I went back to the store I bought the previous package and found an older bag of his formula based in lamb and decided to get it just because it was what his stomach was used, but I swore this was the last Purina product I will buy.
Furious, I wrote an email explaining my displeasure with their choice to cheap out on their product, but sell it at the same price while putting what I imagine is many dogs in intestinal distress. You can't just switch food brands like that, it does terrible things to dogs' stomachs. I informed them of my decision to not have anything to do with their products again. Their response, they're sending me a coupon to get more food. Exactly what I want, more of their deceptive practices thrust upon me. It's disgusting that a company like them can act like this.

Our dog, Gizmo, a normally very perky Australian Shepherd, is dying of kidney/renal failure. About a month ago, he started frequently urinating, drinking a lot of water, and became a little lethargic. He did not want to eat his dog food. This was the opposite of the normal Gizmo. We consulted a vet who said, "Give him a few days, he will snap out of it." Then, Gizmo stopped eating all together and started dropping weight dramatically in the past few weeks. We took him to a different vet who stated that he may have lymes disease and did a bunch of expensive tests. The testing came back as kidney failure, but they could not confirm the lymes disease, but due to the symptoms, she started IV's, antibiotics, and kept him for three days trying to restart his kidneys.
Yesterday, we picked Gizmo up. The vet said that the fluids did not work, and Gizmo has only days to live. We have done research on detoxifying his kidneys and put him on a strict whole foods diet, although he barely eats. We are praying for this little guy, as he is our family member. We cannot imagine life without him. Then last night, we noticed that our black lab, Cole, has lost weight too. He too is refusing to eat his dog food, even with bacon grease on it. This is highly unusual for our glutton of a dog. We are taking him to the vet to be tested, but this made us wonder about the food.
When we read other people's similar stories, we were horrified that Purina has let this go on so long. I hope they are testing their food, doing something to check into this. Perhaps it is only a few random bags, but to hear the heart breaking stories of people like us who have dying or dead pets, huge vet bills, and suspect the dog food, it is so alarming! I have posted a warning on Facebook, with a link to this web page, and asked that others spread the word. Until this is investigated further, people need to know that their pets could be in danger. I hope Purina reads this and does something. I have saved the bag and am going to find out where it can be tested. These dogs are like family to me.

Purina One Dog Food: I have had the same thing happen that others here have complained about. My Cocker Spaniel started drinking unbelievable amounts of water and urinating a lot more than usual. Then came the explosive bloody diarrhea and acting lethargic. I took the dog to the vet and his blood work was horrible. His platelet count was 12! Started him on predisone, antibiotics, and 2 other meds. He stopped eating and drinking. I started offering him scrambled eggs and little by little he started feeling better after a few days, still having diarrhea and acting somewhat lethargic, especially like others reported, having difficulty walking.
There is no doubt in my mind that there was something wrong with the food. Like others reported, my dog only ate the dry food, no table scraps and is an inside dog in a controlled environment. Something they have added to the new formula is not good for our pets! The dog won't go near a bowl of it now. They are smarter than they get credit for at times obviously. I would like to see Purina reimburse people for their vet bills at the very least. No amount of money can replace a pet, and I am truly heartbroken for those who have lost their pets to something that could have been avoided. These products need to be removed from the shelves until they can find out what the problem is with the formula.

I have a 4-year-old otherwise-healthy Rottweiler. We've had him on Purina One Smart Blend Lamb and Rice, since they switched their formulation. He has had random diarrhea events, but I never thought anything of it. Since the beginning of March, he started having explosive diarrhea with no apparent cause. I have taken him 3 times to the vet to get him checked out. They first changed his diet to boiled ground beef, rice and cottage cheese; and he seemed to do much better.
After starting back on the regular dry dog food, he began having the explosive diarrhea again. The second time I took him, they treated him for parasites with antibiotics and an anti-diarrhea medicine. Once back on the regular food, the diarrhea came back. Now today, the third time, we took him to the vet; and they have done blood work and a fecal test. And the vet bills are racking up.
After reading all of these complaints, I can only come to the conclusion that his problems are the result of the dog food. I will be filing a complaint with Purina as well as the FDA and spreading the word. Pets are family, and their food should be regulated better. I have quite a bit of money to try and help my dog, and he's been through hell, feeling sick the last month and a half.

For several days, I mixed it with the food I received from the shelter and noticed she had diarrhea. I took in a stool sample, and it was clean. The vet said perhaps it was the stress of a new environment. She is thin, and the vet said she needed to gain some weight, so I should gradually increase her intake as well.
I started feeding her more of the Purina, but the diarrhea did not go away for over a week. Over the weekend, I ran out of my regular food for the other dogs and decided to give Purina as well till I got to the store. Please check this food lot to make sure it's not bad in some way - my purpose for sending this communication is for you to check the food lot. I don't want other dogs to get sick.

I ran out of cat food the other night and of course, the pet stores were closed. I ran into Sobeys 24-hour and picked up a bag of Purina Cat Chow Weight Management. Within a few hours, 2 of our 3 cats were vomiting. I found it odd that they were healthy a few hours earlier. The next morning, I went to the store to get one of our regular foods (Iams) and replaced it for the Purina. One of the two cats seems better, but the 8-month old is still vomiting and having trouble breathing. Now I have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to take her to the vet. I am hoping she sleeps it off and is fine, but I am shocked by all the similar stories posted here.
I will be calling Purina tomorrow and voicing my concerns for all that is worth. I will also be calling a few local papers and TV stations to see if there is an interest in probing this further. Purina has just made my decision to switch to a vet food that's much easier. It may be more expensive, but after taking into account vet bills, I think it will save me money in the long run and my peace of mind is worth the extra cash as well. My cats are a joy and I can't believe I was so cheap to buy them this crap in the first place. Shame on me.

First time buying Purina Cat Chow Weight Management. The cats all started frothing, foaming and gagging. My kitten is so sick and has been for days. We switched back to normal food the day after, but she's still heaving and her breathing is off. I'm worried about her health and she is going to the vet tomorrow.

On Sunday, April 8th, I fed my beloved 10-year old Siamese/Birman cat Fancy Feast Grilled Tuna. I usually smell the can's contents but was in a hurry and did not check the contents. My cat ate her 3 pm meal and all seemed all right. I went out and came home. All was well until 10 pm when suddenly Nylablue sat bolt upright and started 'slurping' then she projectile vomited on the living room rug. It was the tuna I had fed her at 3pm undigested! It smelled like feces and was a yellowish/tan color. After three sessions of vomiting, she ran to the litterbox and had explosive diarrhea that was the same color and smelled like the vomit. The diarrhea went on until 12:30 am and we fell asleep around 2 am. I rushed Nylablue to Vet on Monday and my Vet did a thorough check and said it was food poisoning! My girl had Sub Q fluids and a Cerenia injection, total of $94.
Nylablue did not eat all Monday or Tuesday nor drink water. I rushed her back to Vet on Wednesday and once again we did Sub Q fluids and a Prednisone injection plus pilling her with Mirtazipine to stimulate her appetite. She was put on Vet food which she ate for a day. Last night, Nylablue had the biggest poop I have ever seen and she is only 10 lbs. The Vet says it was the poison leaving her system. Nylablue is still on the mend and it will be a while before we know if there is any permanent damage done. She is still listless and lethargic.
It took three days to speak to someone at Purina office. I called a total of 10 times and sent two emails. I had to leave a belligerent message to get a phone call. The email I was sent suggested I bought a dented can of food. I was enraged as I check every can and I pack them at the grocery store myself. After 1+ hour on the phone with the customer care rep, she told me a courier would come and get the eight remaining cans of Grilled Tuna and analyze them. The man did show up today. I have an extra can here in case I need a separate test done. Supposedly the Purina Vet was to contact my Vet but he has not called at all!
I am to mail in copies of the Vet bills and some accounting firm representing Purina will consider making some sort of payment, maybe if I qualify. I told the rep if Nylablue dies because of poisoned cat food, there will be ** to pay! I was a loyal Purina customer for 40 years and to be treated with such disdain was unforgivable. I am sharing my story with everyone I know who has a cat or dog because now that I have experienced this, I want people to know Purina's food is no good! I am praying Nylablue will survive. God help them if she doesn't!

I purchased Beyond One Cat Food from a jewel store which I shop at often. When I got home, there was a $2 coupon inside the bag that was expired. I was so embarrassed when I tried to use it on my next visit to the store to find out that it was expired! I am not one to complain, but I spend the extra dollar on my pets' food to get top quality! I also have a dog, along with my 2 cats. So I actually put my pets' health into Purina's hands! I am letting my friends and family know of my disappointment with your company and its product! Pay attention to your consumers and their pets!

I have bought my three cats Purina dog food for years and have never had a problem until yesterday. I fed my cats the Deli Cat Purina dry food and 5 hours later, one cat was foaming at the mouth, my other two cats were on their side having multiple seizures. I took one cat to the clinic and the vet told me that the cat's condition was similar to insecticide poison. I would be more inclined to believe the insecticide if it wasn't for my indoor cat Bernie. Bernie has not had any contact with the other two outdoor cats and has never gone outside ever. They all ate the same food at the same time though and they all had the same symptoms at the same time.
Luckily, my indoor cat Bernie may survive but it looks like he has permanent nerve damage in his back from the seizures. Sadly, one of my outdoor cats has already died and the other cat is still having seizures. I'm extremely hurt and saddened that I unknowingly gave my cats this deadly food. The best I can do is to try and warn other pet owners that there is something fatal in Purina dry foods that are killing our pets. I will never buy Purina again and advise others not to do it also.

I gave my precious Chihuahua mix (10 lbs) her first Purina Busy Bone (mini size) and after she consumed it, she began to heave and vomit for most of the night. I took her to the vet in the morning where she died during their attempts to save her.

I bought Kibble 'n Bits, net wt. 3.6 lbs, grilled chicken flavor. Before I complained to the company, they ask for many scoops of the product to analyze. The response was nothing was wrong. They sent a $1.50 value coupon and also a note attached rudely that they are not going to send me another coupon any long. I did try again and my pet still develops diarrhea and loss appetite for consuming this product. Anyway, I am not going to buy this product again.

Purina One for cats Indoor (Hairball & reg.) Weight Mgmt: After reading complaints at this product, it makes me wonder whether this is the root of my 15 year old DSH cat's undiagnosed condition by multiple vets for the past few years now! He had been on those crunchies for most of his life along with canned Friskies, 9Lives and Fancy Feast. But a few years ago, he drastically went from being nearly obese to malnourished-looking dropping 5lbs+. Fast! Also, he vomited bile along with the crunchies daily, had an insatiable appetite and howled to no end throughout the day, along with drinking a lot of water. Multiple tests and vets later, the latest diagnosis has been undetermined as well, but now with a regimen of him taking 1/4 tab of Prednisolone every other day to daily and a 1/4 tab of human Pepcid AC.
That started a few mths ago, now he has his good and bad days, but mostly good compared with before. The vomiting has decreased more or less, along with the howling, but he still hasn't gained much any weight, drinks tons of water and has a ravenous appetite but is a bit less aggressive at forcing me to feed him at meal times. Recent urinalysis strip indicated no diabetes and bloodwork has been fine his whole life. He is a completely indoor cat and has never had parasites/worms. Thought I'd share in case this hits home or can help another pet owner or someone can help me as well if someone has shared the same experience or these symptoms ring a bell, etc.
This issue is paramount to me because this cat is like a son to me as I'm sure countless pet owners can relate to. I have no children and have had him since I was nearly a child 15 years ago. Sadly, there is an unethical injustice in our world that deems animals' lives are not worth as much as ours and if these same endorsers of this creed knew the love one can have for an animal and vice versa, they would undoubtedly have an instantaneous change of heart.

My cat was violent after eating Purina One Smart Blend Salmon & Tuna Flavor. This first occurred a couple of months ago. My cat Jasper was vomiting constantly for a 72-hr period. I took him to the vet after 1.5 day. He is 18, and I thought his kidneys were failing, etc. I spend about $400 (which I don't have) running tests. The vet gave me an antibiotic, which I started immediately. I also switched his food, as Purina is not his normal food. I typically buy him Blue, but I can't get it everywhere. So I had bought Purina in the interim. Feeling bad he was sick, I made it a point to get the food he likes, a toy, and snacks.
He got better within about 24 hours, and I thought the antibiotic worked. Going back to the vet a few days later, he had gained some weight back (He was down 2 lbs, only weighs 11), and the vet told me his results showed no sign of infection. We were both very surprised, and she suggested that perhaps the lab was inaccurate.
Shoot to this week when I ran out of food and gave my cat some of the Purina I still had sitting around, there is the same response. He's vomiting after eating big piles of food. I took the food away immediately, and he was better.
I finally searched tonight, and I am angry, appalled, and confused why I have found hundreds upon hundreds of complaints of animals getting sick from this crap and nothing has been done about it! Why are they still selling food? Why has there been no recall or announcement? Why aren't vets advised? Why has there been no civil suit? Why do so many animals have to get sick? I am beside my self, and I wish I was a lawyer or knew one. When is someone going to do something about this?

I have been using Purina One cat food for years. I just recently changed to Purina One urinary tract health formula. On the second bag on food, my cat started throwing up food just after eating, not keeping anything down. Eight hours after eating, I decided to check her mouth, thinking that maybe there was an issue with her teeth. I found her back teeth covered in this food eight hours later! My thoughts were, "What is this doing to her system?" I called my vet and had all tests done, and found out that she has Pancreatitis. I was told about these issues with Purina food from a friend today. Her son has issues with his dog and she mentioned issues with Purina food. I am blown away and very upset with the stories I am hearing/reading on this and how it is so similar to my cat. I am so glad that she brought this to my attention. There needs to be something done about this!

Every time I feed my cat Purina, he is ill. He has fits that are like epileptic fits. I took him off it and he was better. Then when my usual cat food was unavailable, I bought more Purina to see if it was in fact true. And like clockwork, he has just had two fits in one night! I am beyond furious! There are so many complaints online about Purina making their animals sick! I am not gonna keep quiet about this.

My cat has been throwing up on and off for the last few days. I thought it was hairballs, and gave him cat lax. Today, he threw up liquid, and has not been interested in eating. I have another cat who seems healthy, but is reluctant to eat the cat food as well. Both cats are seniors, and typically very healthy. I have never seen them reluctant to eat. I have been feeding them Purina Cat Chow indoor formula, which I bought from Walmart.
