I was feeding my dog, Lucy, her food still has half bag left. I reached down in the bag to give her food and put food in her bowl. Then I saw a metallic object, picked it up and saw that it was an industrial blade which I put in a plastic bag. My dog could have died if I hadn't seen it. I've been using Purina for years for my cat and dogs, but this is the first time it has happened.

Two months ago, I purchased Purina One Dog Food for our 3-year old German Shepherd. She began vomiting and was sick about two hours after eating. I thought it was something she had eaten before being fed. The next morning she ate again and immediately started vomiting. I suspected the food and threw it out into our canal. Even the seagulls would not eat it. They would just drop the food.

I contacted Purina. They stated, it could be the food since they had changed the formula. Purina sent me coupons and I found a bag of the old formula. She ate it just fine. However, when I ran out of that bag I tried to purchase another of the old formula and the vomiting began again. We stopped the food immediately and the vomiting has subsided. I have her on a rice diet right now. I will no longer be purchasing Purina in the future. However, has any damage been done to her health in the meantime.

I have been feeding Purina cat food to my cats for over a decade. The last couple of weeks, all the cats and kittens barely touch or won't eat the can. They are not eating as much dry either. All have diminished appetites. Two 4-month old kittens have vomited and one also has diarrhea. It is very sick and I'm going to the vets today. We believe it's the Purina Food, not sure which flavor or whether the dry is also a problem. It's a possibility that it's not the Purina food but other people's animals eating Purina recently have experienced the same symptoms. They switched from Purina and the animal health returned to normal.

I have had three dogs, one pure breed lab and 2 mutts in the last 10 years having seizures, the 1 common denomination is they have all been raised on Purina. They all came from different places, breeds, years and this is the only thing in common. I am now concerned that it is in the Purina. Are there any other complaints of this type?

We purchased Purina Friskees Seafood Sensations for our cats on September 8 before leaving for vacation. Our 4 cats were fed out of the same bag until we returned from vacation on Sept 19. We came home to find 3 cats vomiting and having diarrhea constantly. We later found that our 4th cat wouldn't touch the food. Four days ago using deductive reasoning, we came to learn it was the food & not a virus. We switched brands 4 days ago & the problems have gone away. We have fed our cats this brand for years & have never had a problem. I fear this batch is contaminated & needs to pulled from the shelves.

In August, I found a worm in the bottom of her feeding dish after my female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel finished eating a bowl of Purina One Healthy Weight Formula. I sifted through the rest of the dog food in the container (18 lb bag) and found numerous little white worms in various stages. I immediately called Purina and was told that they sounded like mealworms that were sometimes found in flour or other human foods and would not harm the dogs but I should, of course, take them to my vet if I had any concerns. I discarded all of the food and sanitized all containers. They sent me coupons which I redeemed on Thursday of this week.

Yesterday, I opened the 34 pound bag of Purina One Healthy Weight Formula dog food and everything looked fine so I fed both my Cavaliers breakfast and dinner. After their breakfast this morning, I reached for their water bowls to fill them and found these same white worms floating in the water. Further investigation revealed that the remaining more than 33 pounds of dog food was riddled with worms, a few of which had crawled down the side of the container, across the floor and into the water since I filled it at bedtime last night.

I called Pet Smart, where I had purchased the food, and was advised to return all of the food and the bag and they would deal with Purina. I did that this afternoon and was issued a full refund. I also took my Cavaliers to their veterinarian for an examination and so far they have suffered no ill effects. I will, however, never use a product from Purina again. I will call them tomorrow to file a complaint but I will not accept any coupons.

Fortunately, there is no damage except to my psyche and the fact that I lost yet another day sanitizing dog food containers, my kitchen countertop, pantry, and floor, taking my dogs to the veterinarian, and shopping for pet food again.

I opened a container of Beneful prepared meals (oven roasted turkey), fed half of the container to my dog. I noticed a small worm moving. I checked the container and it was loaded with small maggot like worms. I immediately called the Purina company who informed me that they would not hurt my dog. They offered to send me free coupons for more of the same product. I informed them that I would never buy this product again.

The person that I spoke with told me that the slightest tear in the packaging can cause flies to get in and lay eggs. I am sure that there was not any damage to the package because the lid was very difficult to remove, as all of the ones I have purchased in the past are. I called my vet and they suggested induce vomiting, followed by a teaspoon of Pepto Bismol, now we just wait and see. I have thrown all the other containers in the garbage and I will never buy this again.

I fed my dog Beneful prepared meals, and hard food. My dog began vomiting, bleeding internally and externally from his rectum, and suffered kidney and pancreas failure. The Vet stated that my dog's symptoms were 100% similar to Rat poison, which takes about 3 days to manifest, which is when I gave my dog the new food. I reported this tragedy to Purina with a case #17830643. I was told that samples of the food would be retrieved from me, and that no one will be following up in regard to the findings. I am extremely disappointed and angry.

My dog passed away. I spent $578.67 trying to save my dog. My famly, especially my 9 year old daughter(an only child), is distraught and blames herself, because she suggested that we change to Beneful.

I bought bag of Purina 1, chicken and rice formula, and my dog became very ill. I've used the puppy brand for some time now with no problem, but all they had was the dog brand, slightly different. My dog got tremors so bad that he couldn't walk to the point where he laid still and urinated all over himself. I took my dog to the vet which was very costly. In a matter of 4 days, he lost weight and had to be given IV fluids. My dog was showing improvement on bland homemade diet for a week and went back to Purina and got sick again.

There was something on the outside of the bag which the sales rep said was nothing. When I got it home and started to open the bag, my fingers touched larvae and there were worms and bugs outside and inside the bag. I took it back to the store in a sealed plastic bag. It creeped me out! I had to drive back to the store and spend time and money returning the product. The store gave me a credit for the cost.

I just got off the phone with my girl friend Michelle. She is a cat rescuer with 30-50 cats. She told me she pulled all Purina products from her shelter. Two of her kittens died from eating Purina and several others got ill. My cats got very ill too with Purina cat chow, they were losing hair by the chunks, it looks like their skin broke down with this food and there were one infection after another.

When I called Purina, they sent me to the claims department which is run by very deceptive personnel, she denied the problem before I even had a chance to tell her what happened. I was told every badge of cat food is different. Apparently if you happen to get a badge of deficient food, you are totally screwed because no matter what happened to your pet, you will get no acknowledgment or the slightest cooperation out of Purina. So to be safe, do not feed your pet any Purina product! Eight months of stressful environment dealing with skin infections, isolating each cat, cleaning crews, disinfectants, thousands of dollars, hundreds and hundreds of hours, absolute nightmare.

I bought a 7lb bag of Beneful healthy weight dog food and it is infested with little black bugs about the size of a pinhead. I emailed Purina to complain but have not received response. I paid $9.00 with tax and I threw the bag away because I always put the dog food into an airtight container. Well, that didn't help. I opened it the next day and there were the bugs. I can't feed it to my dog and can't afford to buy another bag as I am on a fixed income. So, is my dog supposed to starve? The least they could do is respond to my email. I guess I will just have to find a different dog food. I can't afford this on Social Security.

I had 5 indoor/outdoor cats. They had been enjoying Purina Cat Chow for years. I opened a new, 16lbs bag of cat food in April 2010 and noticed that their intake of free choice chow seemed much reduced. At the time, I supposed the cats were consuming more hunting results since they were spending much more time outside with the improved weather. Within a couple of weeks, one of my cats had become ill, lost weight and developed a serious skin condition. This was a cat that did not go outside. She was diagnosed with an allergy and a secondary skin infection. It cleared up partially with antibiotics and completely with Prednisone, but immediately returned once off of Prednisone.

Further testing and treatment was likely to be unaffordable and so I had her put down. I discussed the change in all of the cats' eating habits with the vet but he doubted there was anything unusual with the food. The bag of food in question lasted three months (a bag usually lasted about a month). I just started a new bag of Purina Cat Chow. The remaining cats became quite excited and immediately ate voraciously. This remarkably different reaction to the two bags of food renewed my concerns about the former bag.

I noticed over the last few days that his appetite was dropping off, and yesterday, he had an episode of intense vomiting. I knew when I bought the food that it wasn't the best thing to feed him, but I never anticipated this. He's having trouble holding anything down now. Like another person who complained, I also have to nurse him back to health with watered down chicken broth and plain canned chicken. I won't buy another Purina product ever again.

Anyway, I opened a new can... neither would eat it. I went and bought some, from a different store. Still neither will eat it. Opened another can...nope. Animals know what to eat and what not to eat. There are no other differences and nothing harmful at my house that she could have eaten. We fed our female cat Chloe Purina Fancy Feast, Elegant Medleys, Wild Salmon and Egg Souffle with Garden Greens, 3 oz. can, Bar code:5000057054, Code on bottom of can: 92581162 L1DN41920 for about 6 months. She would vomit in the mornings, not every day, but most days. We didn't make the connection between the food and the vomiting earlier because the vomiting occurred the next morning, and it was of a watery nature--no food itself would come up.

Finally, we took her to the vet and ended up paying around $700 to find out there was nothing wrong. After finding out there was nothing wrong with her, we were finally able to put two and two together and narrowed the problem down to this particular food. As soon as we stopped it, the cat was fine, and has been since, about a week now.

I need to add more results of my personal investigation. I have six cats that were fed Purina Indoor Formula. I now realize that its not just the tabby and Himalayan that got very sick, the other four cats, less severe, were losing hair like mad, too, plus some vomiting and diarrhea (probably from excessive hair ball). For a while I thought these were just side effects from all the medications they took for treating four different kinds of infections they had after eating Purina.

All six cats were healthy and tough all their lives until I started them on Purina. Now that we stopped feeding them Purina, five cats are healthy again, the hair loss and vomiting stopped, and only one cat is still struggling from the severe infection. The Purina had obviously greatly weakened their immune system. The cat that's still sick is my heart and soul. If she loses her battle, I will spend the rest of my life to make sure Purina does not do this to other people's pets again.

I’ve spent thousands of dollars in vet bills, canceling family reunions, canceling trips for my own surgery, months of sleepless nights and emotional drain and further stress from the way Purina handled this situation; friendly but evasive, the claims department simply ignored my calls. Believe me, this company does not care about your pets.

Due to my cats weight issues, I switched their diet from Meow Mix to Purina Cat Chow "healthy weight" in the green bag. This was about several months ago, not long after, the Himalayan mix cat came down with malassezia yeast infection which kept recurring. I found out from the internet that the lack of certain fats may be a primary cause as malassezia is generally secondary to other issues.

She is still in the hospital at the vet. About two or three months ago, another female cat came down with hair loss at various places and had severe itching. We started to suspect that it may be their diet since the other four cats, who didn't have this problem, have been eating a little of Meow Mix along with Purina.

We switched their food to the more expensive science diet then two weeks later, the female cat with the hair loss is not itching any more and her hair is getting much better. We now have to watch for other related health issues just in case. The expenses, emotional drain, isolating the cats, vet bills, bought eight metal cages, worries, numerous phone calls all over the US, time consumed to investigate has been overwhelming.

I opened new bag of Purina Pro Plan Puppy Chicken & Rice Small Breeds food on Dec. 13 and fed puppies (aunt is breeder and I place the puppies). One started pacing the playpen, whining, crying, and didn't know what could be wrong. I put her into a small crate to try to calm her down, and heard a scream within a couple of minutes. I looked inside and she was lying down, motionless. I got her out. Teeth were clenched, eyes rolling crazy, body limp, foaming at the mouth, and she was having seizure. I wrapped her in a blanket, held her, and she came out in a couple of minutes. I continued to hold her in my lap (1 lb. 10 oz. 3 and 1/2 month old).

Within an hour, she wet all over my lap, went limp, foaming at the mouth again, eyes rolling, teeth clenched. I thought it could be sugar drop so I used Nutrical and called the vet. He said to watch her and tests may be required. They were fed supper and breakfast on Monday morning and by noon, second puppy went into seizures. She didn't come out. I rushed her to the vet. Blood work and exam showed perfect blood sugar. Vet said it was the moldy corn in the food, which is what killed so many dogs last year from Diamond Pet Foods. He gave them shots. I had to give Pedialite, chicken broth diluted, Nutrical, and that puppy didn't wee from noon Monday until midnight.

The vet said we had to keep the kidneys working, and I had hydrated her with no success until then. The stress of the seizures then pushed them into Coccidea (diarrhea) and I've had to treat with Albon, but they are doing well now. A friend that got a Maltese from us called me that night to ask what could be wrong with her dog, 3 years old, 10 lbs. She was giving him Purina Pro Plan Puppy and he'd had three seizures in two weeks. We have used this food for a few years with no problems, but I will never use Purina food again.

I noticed that my 6 lb. bag of Pro Plan dog food has certain types of kibbles that are covered with mold. The bag is well within the expiration date. I buy small bags so as to ensure freshness and use 1.5 cups a day, so it has not been opened an excessively long time. Furthermore, I keep it inside in my pantry so it hasn't gotten damp. I googled "mold in my Purina Pro Plan" and noted there is an ongoing lawsuit involving aflatoxins (from mold) and this dog food.

This makes me think this may be a widespread problem. The bag is inscribed "new with savory, tender shredded pieces" and it is these pieces that are moldy. None that I can prove, I have discontinued feeding with this food. However, I had a young dog die suddenly and unexpectedly last year and was feeding this food. I am not interested in suing Purina. I have been feeding my cat Fancy Feast for years, but after the 2007 recall, I stopped. I started feeding it to him again last year sometime. Thinking back now, I remember him throwing up a lot after I fed him. He has hairballs quite frequently so I didn't associate them at the time. About 5 weeks ago, I purchased the Purina One Urinary Tract Health Dry Cat Food. After eating it for about 2 weeks, he was showing signs of lethargy, and a urinary tract infection (using the litter box a lot, trying to find other places to go, etc.).

I took him into the vet and she pulled urine for a urinalysis test. He had a lot of blood in his urine. When the test came back, it didn't show an infection at all. She had given him an antibiotic shot called "Convenia" before she got the test results back. She said that it lasts 2 weeks. He seemed like he was getting better over the next few weeks, but then something happened. He became very lethargic, just not himself.

So, I took him back to the vet. She said that all of his vitals were fine and that I could do a blood test to check the organs. The test came back and everything looked fine and she said there was nothing wrong with him. I knew that there was so I decided to get online and check things out. That's when I found this site and all of the problems with Purina food. I took him off of all Purina food right away.

The next day, he was disoriented and I had to take him to the emergency. They did all new blood tests. They found that his platelet counts are down, but everything else was fine. They put him on Prednisone and we have to keep checking to see if his counts go back up. The emergency vet said that it was Thrombocytopenia (toxin induced, drug reaction, infectious or autoimmune) and the vet I was going to said that it could be something neurological. I know in my heart it all started with food. Now I hope he can pull through. Consequences: emotionally and physically drained, not to mention financially drained as well for the last month and it's not over yet.

We thought it might be too rough on his stomach because we gave him a bowl without mixing it with his original food. So, I decided to try again a couple days later with mixing his original food. When I opened the Purina bag, I found several tiny webs and several larvae crawling around within the bag. The Purina bag I bought was the second to largest bag and was not cheap. Obviously, the bag went straight outside to the trash, using the homeowner's garbage at the pool house because it was getting picked up the next day!

PetSmart has tried to work with us on this issue, but Purina has not returned calls or e-mails. Given Purina's lack of response, I've mounted my campaign against them! I've already spent over $2600 in vet bills since this incident. I can afford another $50-$100 to have some bumper stickers printed which I can pass out to friends, co-workers, and neighbors. I also have a Border Collie-Blue Heeler puppy that had been fed Beneful and has a dull dry dandruff coat. I now feed her Royal Canin and she is very healthy. I also have horses that I had fed Purina feed as well and I was not happy with the results. I switched them to Nutrena and they love it and I have totally different horses. We have been using Purina One to feed our dog for over two years now. The last bag was where the problem started. We always pour the entire bag into a sealed plastic container, and we don't pour new bag in until the container is empty and be cleaned out. As I was pouring this bag into the container, at a split second, I thought I saw something black moving inside food. I thought I was just imagining things.

This morning, as usual, I grabbed the scoop that sits inside the container to take out food for my dog; only this time, my finger felt something weird underneath the handle. I took a look, yes, it was spider web and as I inspect it closer, I found at least 20-30 little worms with webs around them on top of the lid, inside the scoop handle. It was gross. Now, it all came back to me that I did in fact see something like a spider in the dog food as I was pouring them out of the bag. I stopped feeding my dog immediately and I will never buy from Purina One ever again. After reading other complaints, I know that I am not alone.

I bought my first (and only) bag of Purina Pro Plan. My dog got sick instantly from the food. His symptoms were abnormal vomiting, diarrhea and very lethargic. We thought it might be too rough on his stomach, because we gave him a bowl without mixing it with his original food. So, I decided to try again a couple days of later with mixing his original food. When I opened the Purina bag, I found a huge spider web in the bag. I was able to pick out the entire web without it falling apart, because there was some dog food mangled in it. I immediately stopped feeding my dog Purina Pro Plan. I went back to feeding my dog the original food and he stopped being sick.

The Purina bag I bought was the second to largest bag and was not cheap. So, I held on to the bag hoping that I would find a shelter for homeless person with a dog that would take it. I obviously don't know I was thinking (I guess I was bummed that I wasted the money). I kept the open bag in a sealed plastic container. I opened the container about two weeks after original purchase to look at the side of the food bag. When I pulled the bag out of the container, I opened the bag and found the entire top of the food full of little white worms. I took the bag straight outside to the trash. After seeing how instantly sick my dog got and the worms, I will never let my dog have Purina products again. I am going to make sure that my family and friends hear my story too.

I am in rescue and have been using Purina foods for over 15 years now. It seems that for the past few years, many of my animals (including our own personal pets) have had strange symptoms with no known cause. Specifically, One for puppies as well as Large Breed (adult and puppy) and Adult Chicken and Rice. While I have never had a complaint, I seem to see a pattern with what others have said with regard to the foul, green, runny poop, loss of weight, appetite, hair, etc. My shepherd and shepherd mix and pit bulls have all had the shooting, smelly, green runs. It has been when a new bag was given to them. I also put my food into a container and have not found any bugs so to speak of.

I am very concerned that this has been a pattern and I, as well as many others, have had to stop the food to make (cooked chicken, rice, peas and carrots, etc.) them food to get them to be able to walk, stop the runs and want to eat. Please be very careful with your food purchases. Write down the serial number on the bags if you place it in another container and save your receipts. Make a quick entry of how your pet is doing.

About two months ago, I switched from Purina One to Purina Nature's Recipe. After about three days, one of my dogs became very ill, with bloody diarrhea and vomiting. It took a week of feeding him home cooked chicken, rice, etc. before he recovered. Shortly after that, the other two dogs became sick with the same symptoms and I likewise cooked homemade food for a week until their symptoms lessened. I had a feeling it was the dog food and I quit giving them the Nature's Recipe and have not had a problem since.

I was only days away from a big vet bill. Thank goodness I suspected the food in time. They were all so dehydrated I had to spoon feed them chicken broth. All this because I used a coupon for Nature's Recipe trying to save money in this economic situation. I will never buy Purina again, not even for the strays in my neighborhood. Purina must have sold out to China.

I have 4 dogs, of all ages and size. I was feeding Purina One Large Breed Puppy because my older dogs needed to put on some extra weight. I was experiencing some problems with the food Nature’s Recipe, which is currently owned by Purina as well. They were having severe vomiting and diarrhea, both greenish colors. The diarrhea was so bad it would spray on my walls. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. The vomit, was the same color, and smelled the same. You could not figure out what came out of what end.

I had purchased two bags since I went through it so quickly (Nature’s Recipe). The first bag was fine, but the second one is when all the problems began. I did not keep my receipt or the bag since I use large air tight containers. I threw it away and switched to the Purina One Large Breed Puppy. I went through one whole bag with no problems. I purchased my second bag, and like clockwork it all started up again same symptoms as with the Nature’s Recipe. Horrified, I had to cook my dogs’ food for 3 days because I had to wait to get more money to buy a whole new brand of dog food. Luckily, I kept the bag this time, expiration date was normal.

I began to pour the food back into the bag so that I can get store credit when I noticed something horrible. This air tight container had 2 small white worms in the vet bottom, along with a very small black/metallic green beetle. I was shocked. My dogs have been eating bugs? I will be calling Purina One tomorrow. My little puppy has blood in her feces, and my dogs have been having explosive diarrhea for the last 5 days. This diarrhea is like water, and they strain a lot to go. My dogs look sick in the face and are very, very ill. I just had to switch them again because of Purina, and I can’t even do a slow switch because of what this food was doing to them. Some bags okay, while others have horrible results.

I will never use Purina again. If you have a similar story to mine, or would like to ask questions please feel free to contact me at **. I have photos. This has cost me money in throwing food away, 4 sick dogs, emotional and physical stress, tons of cleaning (I still need to shampoo my carpets) and depression.

I thought it was because he ate all the food at once, and scaled back his portions. Four days ago, I came home to find him stretched out under a table, literally screaming in pain. I rushed him to the emergency vet where we discovered that he had developed a urinary blockage. The more research I have done into the causes and treatment of urinary blockage and crystals, the more people I have discovered used the exact same cat food. I got my cat out of the hospital two days later with a $600 vet bill. My little kitten died just a week after eating it. She had been lethargic for the last few days, and we planned on taking her to the vet Monday, but she didn't make it that long. She threw up only once or twice, laid around a bit (but still played some), and then I came home tonight, and she was just laying there on the floor trying to live. She took her last breath and died in my arms before I could even find a vet that would be open this late and on the weekend. My doctor suggested we get his thyroid checked. I moved and was unable to find Purina Pro Plan so I switched him to Purina One Sensitive. Within a week or so, he started vomiting and having diarrhea. The vet ran a thyroid test. It was borderline low, and in other tests and they could not find anything wrong, so they gave him meds to treat the symptoms. In two weeks, I was back at the vet. They wanted to run a more expensive thyroid test, but I was broke so I just got the meds to treat his symptoms. I finally realized maybe it was his food and switched brands and also started to mix it with homemade dog food to cut down on commercial food I was giving him. Since then I have had no more episodes of vomiting and diarrhea and his hair is starting to grow back. I feel the food Amy have been too high in selenium. With my financial situation tightening (like everyone else), I opted to change my dog from dry Science Diet to dry Purina. My dog ate, but not like he ate before. I mixed in some chicken, but he still didn't want to eat the food. This went on for about four days and as I again poured fresh food into the bowl, I noticed what things looked like larva or their little cocoon. I dug again in the bag and the amount I found was unbelievable! I was shocked, angry and sorry I didn't "listen" to my dog when he wouldn't eat.

I took the bag back to PetSmart and the gentleman there not only promptly gave me credit toward a new bag of Science Diet but, get this, he said, "We get a lot of returns. They are known to have a problem with that." Hello?! "Known to have a problem..." Why is this stuff still on the market? And, if it's known to have a problem, why do they still carry it?

To top things off, my neighbor got a new puppy. I hadn't thought to discuss food with her. I noticed her dog's stomach looked bloated. I mentioned the bloat and my neighbor said she wondered about that too. "My dog doesn't eat all that much and when she does, she seems to get sick." A light bulb went off in my head and I asked what she was feeding her. Sure enough, it was dry Purina! Immediately, I asked permission to take it back for her and exchange it for Science Diet. Her dog ate a healthy meal as soon as I got back and within three days, the bloat was gone and she stopped getting ill.

Bottom line: If your dog isn't eating properly, has a bloated stomach and gets ill after eating (vomit or diarrhea), check the food. Dogs eat. Dogs don't get diarrhea from the air. My suggestion: Stay away from Purina! Thank you for letting me vent.

I took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotic - no change. We went back, did x-rays and she had gall stones, 2 of them. She had surgery to remove them and was told all would be well. She was still sick, with blood in urine, stool and vomiting. She was at the vet’s office every 4-5 weeks with more test and antibiotic.

After a year of doing that, two vet opinions, surgery, meds, the vet said there was no more they could do and it was time to put her to sleep. We spent all of our savings to save our dog because she was like a child to us. After reading labels and doing research, I know in my heart that it was the Purina One dog food that took our 6 year old dog. We have a new puppy and I won't feed her anything that Purina makes. I am a better pet owner now because I know what all that junk they put in dog food can do to the pet you love and they don't care. They just put a cute dog on the bag. She was pacing and whimpering. I got home & she was exhibiting these symptoms. It was a Sunday & we were discussing where we could take her for help. She walked to the backdoor like she wanted to go out & before I could get there, she collapsed & she urinated on herself. We picked her up & put her in the car to get to the ER vet but she died a block away. We couldn't figure out what happened.

She was just at our regular vet 2 weeks prior & had a wellness check up. She was fine except for arthritis in her back paws. She was given an injection and some pills. She hated pills. She loved her Purina Alpo Prime Cuts which she only got twice a week. We started hiding her pills in there every day. She died Sunday, March 11th, & on Wednesday, March 14th, the first recalls became public. Purina was not on that list. We still didn't know what had killed our Maui. About 2 weeks later, Purina was on the recall list with the Prime Cuts. We have cans of that dog food with those lot numbers. I talked to my vet & he couldn't believe she had died. He thinks it was the dog food. We had Maui cremated.

My vet advised me to call the FDA & file a report with them. I did. I also sent Purina an email right after I learned they were on the recall list. I didn't hear from them until I filed the report with the FDA. The very next day, some attorney called. She wanted Maui's vet files and the canned dog food. I said no. She was put on Iams Low- PH prescription diet and doing great for about a year- but then my other cat who was still eating Purina Cat Chow started getting a Rodent Ulcer on her lip. And I forgot to mention was also vomiting every other day for about a week. My doctor prescribed prednisone tablets and the Rodent Ulcer went away but came right back after two weeks off the meds. She went back on the Prednisone and the vet switched her food to Hills Low-Allergen Prescription food. Now she has been off the Purina all together for about three weeks.

But both of my cats are on different prescription diets now! Yeah, not easy to control. Although, after doing more research I have decided to switch them both to a highly reputable food called Blue Spa. I have heard good things about the food and I understand that they do not import any ingredients which would obviously mean that the Melamine issues are greatly reduced. They sound committed to really having good quality ingredients. Ex. first ingredient is whole deboned chicken, not poultry by-product meal like in Purina - look up that definition! And it's around the same price- a little less actually- as all that prescription food I have to feed my cats now after Purina messed them all up! So anyway- So far so good but I'll let you know how it goes.

My only beloved cat Siamese named PawPaw was sick for nearly 6 to 7 weeks total. From dizziness (actually falling over) including flu-like symptoms. I even had the local American Pet Hospital Medical assistant come directly to my home because my cat was so skittish in traveling. That's when I was told of the food contamination. He was given two shots and told to GET OFF OF REGULAR DIET and was told to shift him to DIAMOND adult cat food sold at the local Feed Store located on Mchenry Avenue in Modesto, CA. I am a prior resident of Modesto, CA. The whole ordeal was absolutely heartbreaking to witness and my cat had gotten sooo thin you could see his spine and hip bones due to not having any appetite EVEN AFTER WE CHANGED THE FOOD. He was timid in trying.

I have been feeding the 4 inside cats purina kit & kaboodle for about 2 years now, and my outside cat just eats a cheaper brand of whatever I buy. In the past month and a half, I have had 3 cats to die. One of those whom went in and out. That was the first to die. Took her to the vet and said it was some kind of poisoning, but didn't know what. She died 1 day later. The next cat was my baby. I noticed she wasn't looking very well, so I took her to a different vet, and he said he really didn't know what was going on. I told him about the first cat and that this one was urinating blood and couldn't quite make it to the litter box. He treated her for a kidney infection and she died at 11:00 that night. That was all in two weeks. Not thinking of bad cat food, I continued feeding them the same kind. Two weeks later, I noticed another cat not looking well. I noticed blood in his urine also. The following day, he died. This was yesterday (10/13/08). I have one inside cat and the outside cat left.

She suddenly and mysteriously began to shiver uncontrollably, she started vomiting, she became extremely lethargic often hiding under the bed and non-responsive when I called her. I took her to the vet two times, the second visit resulted in emergency surgery. She was ultimately transferred to a critical care animal hospital for around the clock care until she died two days later.

I've had cats my whole long life and fed them what I THOUGHT was Premium Grade Cat Food. Things like Fancy Feast and their dry affiliate. After the initial wet cat food recall, I took my cats off of Iams Pouches and put them exclusively on Fancy Feast. I should have known, because my cats had severe bad breath, really foul smelling stools, vomiting, etc. And then, my otherwise healthy STRICTLY INDOOR 8 year old starting becoming very lethargic, vomiting nasty smelling bile mixed with food, etc.

After several vet visits, tests, etc....He was diagnosed with IBD, Inflammatory bowel disease brought about by the ingestion of BAD FOOD. It was so advanced that he couldn't keep anything down ever though he was constantly hungry. He lost over 5 pounds in less than one month. It was PATHETIC. The food literally ate away at his intestines to the point where he could not digest ANYTHING anymore, even good food. He was put down in less than 3 months after diagnosis.

I Will NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN buy a commercially produced pet food. Now my cats.....my NEW cats, that is, eat a strictly all natural diet. Petropics makes an all natural line that is free of any of the poisons in Purina foods. That, combined with food for human consumption is all I will ever feed my cats from now on. Do NOT be fooled by those bag you see in the stores these days that SAY all natural. They aren't. That is big corporations attempt at fooling you into thinking you are giving your pet good food, when in fact, if you read the ingredients, it's the same CRAP!! There are many GOOD pet food brands, like Indigo Moon Solid Gold, Wellness, Tiki-Cat, Innova, Castor & Pollux, etc. Just go to google and search for All Natural Pet Food, and make these ** pay for the loss of our beloved friends. He has been eating Beneful made by Purina for about 2 1/2 years but he never ate alot of it. I just thought he was picky about food. He may eat about 10 pieces of day. He was still growing and was healthy.

I bought some beneful last month and decided that he needed to eat more dog food so I didn't give him anything else. No treats or anything. He started throwing up, peeing, losing weight. Last month when we went to the Vet he weighed 5 pounds. Now he weighs 4.7 pounds. Tomorrow he will get blood work done and x-rays.

After readng some of the complaints, I am worried that I will lose him. He has all the symptons that people are explaining. I have not contacted Purina because I didn't even think that this could possibly be the problem but now I don't know.

I own and run a 200 sow farm. In June 2007 I got tired of my pigs being sick and decided to spend the money to have the pigs and feed tested. I called the Oregon Department of Agriculture and they started testing feeds. It turns out that the pigs had Chronic Selenium Toxicity. Not from a bad mix, but from grains grown in high selenium states such as South Dakota. I have test results from aborted fetus liver, many sow livers, maybe 100 blood tests, Official feed tests from ODA, and more tests from other farms, including goats and cows. Confirmed diagnosis from my herd Vet, Top Vet at Oregon State University, and top expert Nutritionist/Research Scientist in the country, of Selenium and Swine, at Ohio State University. All collaborated to get the diagnosis right.

They are all in agreement, and I have others test results from CA and MT. High Protein grains (soybean meal, Canola) grown in high selenium soils in states like South Dakota, is well known to be dangerous, but the animal food companies don't test it, ever. They go by 40 year old book values for determining Selenium content of grains and as a result many animals are being slowly poisoned. Especially in the States West of the Mississippi. The Grains grown in South Dakota and other Plains States is cheaper and closer to save the companies shipping costs. Selenium Toxicity is well known and well researched since the early 1800's.

Chronic Selenium Toxicity can mimic a very long list of ailments and diseases. We tested for diseases, but my herd was already certified against diseases (one of a handful in the country. I lost over 100 sows due to damage. I am the first in the country to figure this out and I have the attention of the National Pork Board. The problem is people are not requesting selenium tests on their animals, and the Vets aren't thinking of it either.

I will be happy to help you bring a class action against the whole feed industry for lack of testing. Because they cannot show me any tests they have ever done on grains, even though they know very well what can happen with selenium. I have already brought a suit against two very big companies. Court date in January 2009. But, I would like to see this problem of mysterous ilnesses of animals brought to the attention of the world. I have read about the Nutro illness situation and I can bet nobody has thought to test for selenium levels in the animals or food.

So we fed her some tuna and she kept it down, but would not touch the Purina any more. Purina Pet Food Illnesses and Adverse Reactions

To all those who are experiencing adverse effects (illness, vomitting, diarrhea from feeding your pets Ralston-Purina pet foods:

Further to my previous email, I have critical information for you. I met with 3 FDA investigators the other day and they were tremendously helpful and concerned.

    I learned a few things:

    1) Purina will only do a physical anaysis if you submit a complaint to them about a product. What this means is that they will not analyze for content, but look simply at the appearance of the product. After I sent them samples of the poisoned cat food that induced violent vomitting in as many as 21 cats in the immediate area, they determined that it looked normal.

    2) Purina is required by law to report complaint incidents to the FDA ... UNLESS THEY DETERMINE THAT PRODUCT IS NORMAL. Therefore, no complaints regarding any Purina products have been reported to the FDA.

    3) If your pet is experiencing illness as a result of ingesting any Purina product, you must contact the FDA directly as Purina will not examine for anything but it's visual appearance.

    4) It is imperative that you contact Walter Osborne to register complaints at walter.osborne@fda.hhs.gov, referencing Docket #2007N-0487 to have the pet food more thoroughly investigated and to have it analyzed for toxic contents.

    5) CRITICAL - the more incidents reported directly to the FDA, the more credibility it affords them to pursue criminal action against Ralston-Purina.

Like most of you, Purina pet food and products have been a staple in my pets' diets for many years, and their reputation always led me to believe that they produce high quality products. Not the case!

Went through a couple courses of antibiotics and it came right back. She was switched to Iams Low PH and since she has been fine!

NOW- my other cat, Sidney is sick and I am worried. I kept her on the Purina Cat chow as she seemed to be fine on it and it was cheaper. Probably a stupid idea! Now I also noticed that the PACKAGING was changed a couple months ago when I purchased a new bag. Apparently I am not the only person that has had an animal get sick since Purina changed the packaging? She now has developed a rodent ulcer which is eating away at her upper lip. She went through a month and a half of steroids and now its coming back again two weeks after the steriods have stopped. The ulcers can be caused by food allergies, other allergies etc. So now I have purchased Hills Z/D Low Allergen, another expensive food- $22 for 4 lbs- in the hopes that she will be able to get better. I wonder if it could be related to their new packaging? Was it changed because the packaging is better or was it cheaper? Probably made in china!!!

Both of my cats are indoor cats and there's noting else I can see that has changed that could have caused this. Hopefully the new food will help Sidney's ulcer. I think the more expensive foods pay off in the long run with reduced vet bills!

I would like you to assist me in investigating the probability of poisonous or tainted cat food manufactured by Purina.

I've been in touch with them over the past three weeks, and although they initially were very reluctant to pursue this matter, they have become increasingly insistent that I let them look into it, and do not contact the FDA or any governing agencies until they have had time to check this out further.

In the meantime, how many cats will suffer and/or die because of consumption of this product?

The quick story is that about three weeks ago, I bought a 4.5 lb. bag of Kit & Kaboodle for my three cats of various ages. All three exhibited immediate and subsequent violent vomiting. The vomiting ended quickly as soon as the food was removed.

After talking initially with Purina about this incident, with little concern on their part, I notified my vet. His assistant, upon hearing the story, was startled. She is a major animal lover and has horses, dogs, etc. and part of her menagerie includes 14 indoor cats. She recalled that in late March of this year, she had bought two huge bags of Kit & Kaboodle, had fed it to her barn and indoor cats and all 14 indoor cats experienced violent vomiting and diarrhea as noted by the Veterinarian himself. She wasn't certain how the barn cats responded as they are somewhat feral.

It should be noted that although she discarded the opened bag, she still has one unopened bag of Kit & Kaboodle in the trunk of her car.

I reported this to Purina and they became more attentive to me and referred me to their home office in Missouri ... they stressed however, that I not contact anyone but them about this matter. They also asked for the vet's assistant's phone no. so they could call her immediately, as well as my vet's.

This was last week. I spoke to her yesterday and she said that she had not yet been contacted by Purina. But she said ... in telling the story to her daughter and advising her daughter not to feed her own cats this product, her daughter responded, Mom, don't you remember? I told you that I bought a small bag of Kit & Kaboodle last month and fed it to the cats. They all got massively sick and threw up.

I contacted Purina yesterday with this update, and again gave them the assistant's phone no. and the times she could call.

The assistant had a message when she got home from Purina (they did not call at the requested times) apologizing profusely for this situation and requesting she call them back.

Doubting very strongly that this is a coincidence, I bought 3 bags of Kit & Kaboodle at two different stores this morning. All, of course, remain sealed and unopened, and two are the same batch no. as the original one I fed my cats.

Although, Purina has been contacting me regularly as of late, they are still very evasive and have directed me to discard some of the material I have concerning this incident. They also informed me that while they were able to listen to the tape of my second conversation with one of their employees, the first I made to Purina on August 27th, 8 days earlier, has disappeared. And other such inconsistencies and the like have occurred.

I have emails between myself and Purina. The last one sent yesterday advising me to wait for the results of their physical analysis which they are supposed to contact me about this evening. I'm also quite disturbed that their investigation of their product revolves only around what they call a physical analysis, whereby they just look at the kibble's physical appearance and do not perform any chemical analyses of the contents.

We believe that contaminated dog food may have caused the illness and eventual death of our three-year-old dog. It all started in early November 2007 when we began to notice some minor gastro-intestinal upset mainly in the form of gas and excessive thirst. Because the problems were sporadic and minor at first, we didnt pay much attention to them. Our dogs normal diet consisted of Purina One Chicken and Rice Formula dog food and table scraps, which we thought might be at the root of the problem.

Later, it was suggested that it might be related to the contaminated dog food scare that was widely reported on the news earlier in the year. Since Purina was not on the list of potential contaminated dog food, we eliminated it as a possible reason for our dogs digestive complaints.

His symptoms slowly worsened until in January 2008 he began to have chronic diarrhea. At this point, we took him to the vet and after numerous visits and extensive testing including blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds and biopsies; he was eventually diagnosed with canine lymphoma. By the time of this diagnosis, the cancer had spread to all of his major digestive organs and one of his kidneys had stopped functioning. We had to euthanize him in March of 2008, only four months after his initial symptoms.

Since his death, no one has been able to offer us a logical explanation as to why this happened to such a young dog. After scouring the library and internet for some answers, we finally came across several stories from other dog owners whose pets suffered after eating contaminated dog food. All of the stories were so similar to our own dogs story that we could no longer ignore the possibility that the Purina dog food caused his death. Most frightening were the similarities in the symptoms, the eventual kidney failure, the reports of dogs becoming sick within the same timeframe, and the fact we had just opened a new bag of dog food in November when all the trouble started.

After much research on the topic, we finally feel we have some answers as to what happened to our dog. Unfortunately, we will always have to live with the regret of blindly trusting Purinas brand name and relying on them to care about the quality of the ingredients they put in their pet food products. Please advise anyone you know who owns dogs to be careful, very careful about what they feed them.

I have two indoor cats, Max and Sophie, respectively 6 and 5 years old. I have fed them with Science Diet food most of their lives with no problem. Both cats have always been healthy, at least until recently.

While on vacation a few months ago, I bought a bag of Purina dry food since I did not have access to Science Diet. Both cats were instantly hooked on it. I switched to Purina after that since they seemed to like it so much. Their behaviour around feeding time was comparable to a drug addict. They would both cry, jump and harrass me until I finally fed them. Looking back, I should have known something was not right...

A couple of months went by and both my cats gained a significant amount of weight even though I never increased the actual amount of food I was giving them. They were both still very obssessed with their Purina food and both were fatter than ever. I also noticed that their water consumption was through the roof, especially Max. He would drink in a day what he used to drink in a week (1 bid dog's bowl a day!!!). Sophie also drank more, but not as much as Max. Sophie was at her heaviest.

Worried about the alarming water consumption, I took Max to the vet and was told that he had diabetes.

I immediately trashed the bags of Purina that were in my house since I knew in my heart that it had something to do with it. I switched them both to Science Diet's Nature's Best dry food (all natural) and noticed a DRAMATIC change right away. Both cats are not so obssessed about their food, they no longer cry before I feed them and, most importantly, Max no longer drinks a huge bowl of water everyday. Their water consumption dramatically decreased and they no longer urinate as much. I'll take Max back to the vet very soon, hopefully he won't be needing insulin shots.

I don't know what's in Purina's dry food but I I might as well have fed my cats with Burger King and crack cocaine everyday. The change in their behaviour was very scary and I will never change their diet again.

By the way, Sophie has lost a few pounds (again, without changing the amount of food) and she's looking great.

We had Newfoundland Dog that we bought from a reputable breeder in Aug. of 2007. The puppy was 7 weeks old at the time we brought her home. We started her on Purina One upon recommendation of vets, advertisements and the good name of Purina. We gave her either Purina One or Purina Pro Plan, depending on which one was available at the time we needed it.

In March of '08 we started to notice a signifecant appetite loss. She was also peeing in her crate which was unusual for her. I took her to our vet thinking she might have had a bladder infection. He tested her urine and it came back fine. At that time she weighed 74 lbs. Three weeks later, with an even more significant appetite loss I took her back to our vet at which time she had lost 7 lbs. One week later she had lost 5 more lbs.

At that time our vet did blood work that indicated she had kidney failure. There was nothing that could be done to save her and we had to put her down. While this was going on, I was given the name of another breeder of Newfoundlands who had done some research into Purina One and the resulting problems it had on her dogs and the dogs of other breeders she knew. I feel that there is sufficient reason to suspect that Purina One &/or Pro plan is the reason our dog suffered from kidney failure and had to be put down. I have kept the bags of food that she had been eating.

We had to put down our dog. The initial cost of purchase was $800. We also kept current on all shots and routine vet care that was needed. there was the cost of testing to find out what was the cause of her not eating. and the cost of putting her down.

Let me begin by saying that I've had my my cat George since he was a kitten. He is now approaching 12 years old, and has NEVER had any health issues. Not even a cold. I've always tried to feed him different kinds of food, so that he could have some variety. About a month ago I started feeding him Purina Deli Cat which turned out to be a huge mistake.

A few days ago, I noticed that my cat wasn't quite himself. He wasn't eating or drinking, he was moving around really slow, sleeping a lot and making several trips to the litter box. The following day he didn't seem to be any better, so my husband and I brought him in for a vet visit. Upon examining him, the vet asked me what I was feeding him. When I told her that I had been feeding him Deli Cat for the past month she immediately knew what the problem was. She then proceeded to tell me that Deli Cat is the absolute worst food that I could have fed to him. It is made of nothing but JUNK, and the bone matter that is in the ingredients crystallizes in the bladder and creates a unrinary tract blockage. My cat still remains in the animal hospital on a catheter, and I was advised today from my veterinarian that he will need to have surgery and stay in the hospital for an additional week thereafter. This is absolutely infuriating! I cannot fathom how this company is able to distribute their products and put them on store shelves with a clear conscience. I feel that at the VERY LEAST they should be liable for the veterinary bills that my husband and I will incur as a result of all of this. Any assistance that you could give me regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My indoor-only cat exhibited severe salmonella symptoms, not renal failure. I removed the food. After vomiting, loose bowels, hiding-out for four days with only token amounts of water and tuna juice, he perked up and wanted food. Purchased small bag of Purina Cat Chow Complete Formula - 3.5 lbs (best by April 2009 with numbers 72841086 1432LOG). He ate 2 TBSP, and within ten hours again had salmonella symptoms. Removed that food, and three days later he rebounded.

I am now feeding him small amounts of expired Whiskas pouches while seeking food I can trust - and keeping my life going as well. Purina should be ashamed for putting owners through this by selling tainted food - and nothing said about it.

Cat has been very, very sick - I have been very busy cleaning up vomit & seeking safe food. The cost of food lost is nominal. I just want people to see they are not alone. I still have the highly suspect bags/food.

We looked for the food we were feeding her on the list of recalled foods, but never saw the Purina One products.

We went on vacation, and on our return June 29th noticed a dramatic weight loss. My wife took her to the vet, where she was x-rayed and had blood work performed.

It was determined that her liver was almost non existent, that it had essentially withered away. Her gums were yellow, her eyes were faded and the whites were yellow, as were the inside of her ears.

The vet recommended putting her on a special Prescribed Liver formula food. She was given at the maximum, 6 weeks to live. She refused to eat any of it. She had actually stopped eating her food altogether.

We began making her meals of cottage cheese, tofu, beef broth, carrots and peas. She ate a couple of the prepared meals, and then turned her nose to that as well.

A week after having her diagnosed with cirossis of the liver, she could no longer tolerate ice cubes or even water.

We had her put down on July 24th where she weighed 68 lbs. She didn't deserve this. We miss our pretty girl.

I read this article on purina pro plan and I have also been feeding this food for years. I have goldens and Japanese chin. Last year I had a multitude of missed breedings, deformed and dead puppies, or puppies that died suddenly with no reason.

I quit feeding pro-plan for a while but I did not like the physical results on my dogs with the other food. It caused staining, horrible stools, and sores on their bodies.

    I switched back.
So far, I have had healthy litters on the pro-plan. I did have a few puppies autopsied but the autopsies really didn't tell us much. It was strange things like clogged fluid vents in the brain, heart defects, even just death with seemingly no cause.
I don't know if it was the proplan or not and I never thought to associate the two because I have fed the food for so long.

I am considering changing foods though. Especially after reading this.

I will say, that among dog exhibitors, it was rumored (and it was only a rumor) many-many years ago. If you wanted coat on your dog feed pro-plan but your fertility rates would probably go down. Now I know there are many chemicals that cause excess hair growth and they do give them to dogs (despite them being poisoness and illegal according to AKC rules) to grow coat. It used to be more common in 10-20 years ago than it is now. The most famous of those chemicals was arsenic.

My male Newfoundland, Doc, also began having severe skin issues. I know it was all food related. God only knows what toxins went into the Purina. I am simply grateful that none of my dogs died. However, I took a poll in a chat room I belong to regarding people using Purina, and several responded with similar issues; however, two women lost their Newfoundlands. They (their Newfs) were found dead with no prior warnings.

I have lost many puppy buyers who were counting on my puppies. I have a stellar repuation as a breeder, and it simply broke my heart to tell them that none of my females were bred. I'm a very educated woman, and as I said, have never had so many misses, besides having a deformed litter.
