Both of our smaller dogs have been eating the LID Sweet Potato & Venison dry food for years and it was great. I just bought 2 new bags about a week and a half ago and just opened one and fed them from it 1 week ago. By the next morning the smaller dog was vomiting followed by diarrhea. Within 2 days we were at the ER vet with the dog who they thought had probably eaten something. By that afternoon the 2nd dog was having diarrhea as well. By Monday afternoon both dogs were at their regular vet who after taking an extensive history and an exam suspected that the new bag of food was the problem. Both dogs are now being treated for colitis and are slowly recovering.
I contacted the company with the lot # etc. of the bag of food and they denied there were any reported problems with the lot or food. My vet kept digging and found this consumer affairs comment thread with complaint after complaint from people in the last few months who have had the same experience with "new" bags of this food. While we have no clear answers there seems to have been a "change of formula" or something but all I know is my dogs had 1 or maybe 2 meals from the new bag and got very ill. Clearly no one should use this pet food brand.

My dog (2yr) has eaten NB since he was 8 mo old. Starting in August 2019 the formula seemed to have changed. He hated the new taste, and lately the food has a more red/orange tinge, a rancid smell, and gives him diarrhea. This company needs to go back to their original formula and straighten things out.

I have used Natural Balance duck and potato for my dogs over the last few years. It was recommended as a good limited ingredient dog food. Unfortunately the company that bought it seems to have changed the formula and my sensitive dogs are having a horrible time with it. They added a red coating to the kibble and most recently the color of the canned has changed, texture is different, and smell reeks of bad meat. I'm now searching for a new brand as natural balance refuses to admit they've changed things.

I'm not accusing Natural Balance of anything, I'm only wanting to bring light to an issue my dog has had since I've been feeding her Natural Balance canned dog food. I've been feeding my dog Natural Balance canned dog food for a couple of years now, I learned about the brand while working in holistic pet stores. I also feed my cats natural balance canned and dry cat food. My dog has been diagnosed with bladder stones, cats seem fine, but am already switching the food to make sure they all stay healthy. My cats and dog are my life, I will go without, if that means they are taken care of. Totally going off subject, but anyways, I just wanted to bring light of the bladder stones just to see if anyone else has ran into this problem and bring it to the attention of Natural Balance.

Our first dog (Aussiedoodle) has been on this food since he was a puppy with the breeder. For 6 months he ate this food with no problem, Petsmart recently advised that NB was coming out with a new formula and since the release of the new formula our poor doggo REFUSES to eat and he LOVES eating. The last couple of days he eventually ends up eating some of it and throws it up a few hours later. We are switching his food today. Goodbye NB. I hope you figure out your formula soon.

NB Sweet Potato & Fish Kibble. I have been feeding my 2 Jack Russell pups this food for the last 5 years, but I noticed a change in the food quality. Last year I noticed the food was lighter in color so I called the company and they said it was a batch that didn't get the "fish coating spray" so bring it back to the store and get another one. I did and the color was better. The last bag I bought I noticed little white hard things sticking out of the kibble! I called the company and they said it was fish bones that had gotten through into the food and that their quality control deemed it safe to consume. She told me if I wanted she could send me a coupon for a free bag that it only affected the batch with the sell by date of March 2020.
I went back and bought a smaller bag with different exp date and it seemed ok. Now I am out again so I went to the store and bought a big bag this time with a sell by date of April 2020 and now this bag has the same pointy bone fragments in it again!! I will be looking for another dog food.... There has been too many negative changes since Van Patten sold the company. So sad...

I’ve had my two chinchilla silver persians on venison & green pea LIT since Nov 1, 2018. I purchased the last bag June 2019. Best Buy date 05 2020. #9080 028 41214. I noticed a huge change in color so I went on NB website. A chat box appeared so I let the company know of my concern. She said everything would be fine as each batch could be slightly different?!!!
The following day my cat had horrible diarrhea. This time I called the company direct. I spoke with the same customer service rep who chatted with me the previous day. She asked me to throw the kibble away and she would send me a voucher for a new bag. I went to Petco and purchased another bag thinking I possibly got a bad batch. Color was still the same. Neither of my cats had diarrhea from the next batch although I noticed both of my cats were having issues with their vision!!! I immediately took them off this kibble and started them on Fromm.
I’m also questionable that NB has put adequate amounts of taurine in their food as lack of taurine can cause retinal degeneration in cats. This doesn’t happen overnight. It can take 5 months to a year! Something is horribly wrong with this food and so far I’m not seeing a recall. Amen for ConsumerAffairs! PLEASE STOP FEEDING YOUR CATS NATURAL BALANCE UNTIL WE KNOW MORE!!!!

Our 17 pound dog Cairn Terrier mix has been eating this dry limited ingredient dog food for a very long time. A few days after we started a new bag - and there were changes in the size of kibble and the color of the food and smell of the food - our dog started vomiting blood and diarrhea blood. Vet put him on a diet of white rice and boiled chicken, along with some meds, and his issues cleared up. Now he's back on the Natural Balance LID food for a few days and he's vomiting again and soft poop. I'm removing this food from his diet and putting him back on the rice and chicken before he gets any worse. I can't say in certainty that the food is causing his illness but I'm not taking any chances. If you are having these problems too, I'd love to know about it and how your dog was treated to recover. Thank you.

I have been feeding my dogs the Natural Balance Chicken formula. I have had my boxer mix not wanting to eat her food and it's getting worse. Recently I bought a new bag and noticed the smell coming from it. Thought nothing of it, just thought it was me. My boxer went 3 days refusing to eat it, we thought maybe she had a bug and switched her to homemade chicken and rice...after several days, returned her to the food slowly mixing it in with the homemade chicken and rice. In the meantime my dachshund was eating it, four days in he started vomiting and we put him on the homemade chicken and rice after that.
Again, thinking that now he had what the boxer had (used this food for several years and not noticed a problem so why would we think it was the food). Now I have both of them pooping without control and the boxer wouldn't eat this morning and now is throwing up. Decided to Google the food to see if there has been any recalls and found the reviews and the problem with this food....Why isn't it off the market.... TAKE YOUR DOG OFF THIS FOOD!!!!

My gentle Sammy has been on the sweet potato and fish formula for about 5 years because of her allergies. Over the past month she has been off her food and lethargic. At first I attributed it to the loss of our life companion. I would augment her meals on and off with chicken and rice to get her interested. But she’d leave most of the kibble. She wasn’t eating, smiling ... upset stomach, diarrhea and seemed feverish. My poor, loving girl.
After much worry and trying all sorts of combinations I have narrowed it down to the kibble. She’s on home cooking now to help her to. How can this company and the pet store not warn the consumer about a change in formula or possible contamination? I am now aware of recalls for contamination. The bag may say packaged in the US, but there is NO information where the ingredients are from or where it’s made! Their irresponsibility could result in serious illness and deaths. I will never return to this brand, and will “spread the word”. Heading to her veterinarian specialist and Hopefully that she will recover.

I’ve been feeding my male pug Natural Balance Bison kibble since I got him at 5 months old. Never had a problem until about 3 bags ago. He started with no eating right away and he’s a gobbler. Now it’s to the point he just doesn’t want to eat. After reading many reviews I’m thinking I need to stop feeding him this. Like others said, I did realize when I opened a bag the smell and color were different but as long as he was eating it I figure it was fine. I was feeding him that because he has a sensitive stomach. But now, honestly I don’t know what to feed him. Going to have to cancel that automatic delivery from Chewy.

We have a 7 year old mix breed 50 lb dog who has been eating Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Bison Formula for the past 7 years without problems. Recently I noticed the color of the food was a bit darker but did not put a lot of thought into it (my mistake). A week or so later our dog began to have stomach problems and honestly we thought he may have gotten into something in the yard. In the event the food may have been a bad batch as it was a relatively new bag, we returned it to PetSmart and purchased a new bag (same brand). Gave our dog a couple of days with a bland diet to recuperate and he did.
Began using the new bag Natural Balance and again started to experience the same issues. Slowly began experiencing our dog not wanting to eat his food, seeming lethargic and then experiencing vomiting and diarrhea this time much sicker. Stopped the Natural Balance and started with white rice and chicken for a week and then slowly introduced a new brand of food, Wellness. Although our beloved dog is much better, he did not bounce back fast the second time. Concerned, we looked into reviews and we were shocked to find all the negative reviews for Natural Balance and issues that people were having with their pets. I am not sure what the problem is but I DO NOT RECOMMEND using this dog food. I will be contacting the company and PetSmart.

Had to take my cat to the vet for diarrhea and vomiting. Could find no health issues - thought maybe the cat ate a toy etc. Fast forward to opening a new bag of this cat food. Looks completely different than the last bag - which was darker in color AND also had small black specs in it everywhere! I gave her the new bag and guess what? Diarrhea from a food change because it wasn't the same food!!!! Same package, they obviously do not care at all about these pets!! I've had so many veterinarians say to stick to the brands that have been around the longest. This company is terrible!

Problem with this recent food formula or ingredients? I recently got a GSP pup raised on Diamond by her breeder. I have been looking at online reviews as I was considering switching to NB. I have come upon the recent reviews on this site, and now see what may have been a - if not the - contributing factor to my previous dog's sudden health decline and death last November. I feel I should document it here in case it may help reveal a critical issue with this brand.
I raised my German Shorthair x lab exclusively on NB Lamb and Rice since 2011 with very excellent results. In late spring of 2018, he started vomiting undigested food and losing muscle mass, so of course I took him to the vet. Examination and imaging revealed inflammatory response and enlarged walls in the upper small intestine. Blood, stool and urine work came back indicating he was losing and/or not taking up protein. He was put on antibiotics and dietary protein supplementation, including boiled chicken breast and white rice. His condition improved by mid June and we resumed normal diet of NB L&R.
In early November he started vomiting and diarrhea again, and losing muscle mass. Vet again did blood work and imaging and found a large mass in his stomach. Surgery found a large tumor, but also advanced pancreatitis, and was put down. The stomach mass was not tested for malignancy as blood work showed only slightly elevated white blood cell count and the pancreas situation was inoperable and terminal. We never considered there may have been an issue with his food, as he had done so well on it. But the timing of his symptoms and demise with that of recent reviews here makes us suspect that I was feeding him a bad lot.

Just want to add my recent experience to the ones already posted. There HAS INDEED been a change to the Bison and Sweet Potato formula... lighter in color with smaller kibble size. DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG THIS FOOD. We've been using Natural Balance for 10 years but will never return after this incident. Not only did my dogs not want to eat it but what little they did eat gave them dark, loose stools. By the way, I called NB just yesterday to inform them and all I got was denial and scripted responses.

We started our 5 lb dog on this food 10 years ago because he was having digestive problems (vomiting daily, diarrhea) and we heard that the Sweet Potato & Fish formulation was especially good for sensitive stomachs. After starting him on it, his stomach problems went away. In the past couple months, he has been having episodes of (pain-induced?) trembling during the day and night and bouts of vomiting. He went to the vet for exams, blood work, x-rays. No abnormalities were identified.
Then I learned that Natural Balance had been reformulated right before we bought our latest bag of dog food. Are all his recent problems due to this? After examining the dog food, I noticed small fishbones (or something sharp) sticking out of the kibble. We've switched him to a chicken/rice diet and he is slowly getting better. We'll be looking for a new dog food to switch him over to once he's ready. We will NOT be going back to Natural Balance.

Our teacup Yorkie has been eating the dog food in the roll for a couple years or so. Then we couldn't find it them. All of a sudden I came across some in our local Petco. After he started eating it again he was having an accident in the house occasionally and this is not normal for him at all. His accidents became more frequent and his urine had a horrible odor to it, absolutely horrendous. Then he was having 2 accidents through the nights. I knew something had to be seeing with him and mentioned it to a friend and she asked if I had changed his food recently. I told her I had not been able to find his normal food and had tried a different foods but then found his original food again so I had put him back on it and this started slowly. She told me to stop and I did that day and seriously he did not have an accident that night forward. How the heck could that happen? I'm just thankful we figured it was the food. Poor dogs.

Our 14 year old American Bulldog has extreme food sensitivities and in the last year she suddenly started getting foul breath, Candida biofilm vomit and growths on her body. When I switched to the Duck and Potato 2 months ago, all the symptoms and growths went away. I had a pit bull that lived to 14 on the Duck and Potato with ZERO growths, no ear infections and no gas. So I have a long history of appreciation for the LID Duck and Potato.
This week I ran out and had just a few servings of the Fish/Sweet Potato left in the Vittles Vault, I have been giving the dogs the last of it, I should have just thrown it out. I noticed within days the terrible gas starting up again and now smelly ear wax on my tiny Maltese mix. Yesterday I noticed that the healed spot on my bully has gotten inflamed again. There's definitely something wrong with this food. I'm starting to wonder if the company is sourcing their salmon from the TOXIC FARMED stuff. I am horrified to see my babies suddenly having irritations from what used to be a healthy and nutritious kibble.

I've been loyal to Natural Balance for over twenty years. Suddenly I get a bag of food that is completely different! The size, color and SMELL is very noticeably different. The labels on the bag are the same. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, WTF? We've been paying for your food because we have dogs that require limited Ingredient Diets! Shame on you for changing it without any warning. Poor animals with bloody diarrhea... vet visits... dogs on IV's. There is no excuse for it. Thank goodness I noticed the difference and didn't feed it to my dogs. Problem is now I've got 60 pounds of food I can't use. This happened to me before when I had a dog on Blue Buffalo. They changed the recipe and that time I had a very sick dog because of it. It's really a shame these companies just don't care anymore about the animals. It's all about $$$$ and that's it. We have several dogs. 2 yrs ago we switched to this food because our one dog a Shar-Pei was allergy tested and she is allergic to peas and oats. Try to find a kibble without peas. We put then all on NB. It started with a few of my kids not wanting to eat, vomiting occ, itchy dry skin and hair, agitation and lethargy. We had to take our Mini Bull Terrier into the vet for her skin, the first time for anything other than shots or a check up and spay. She will be 4 in April, local reputable breeder. The DR listens to her heart and says "she has a heart murmur". You could have knocked my husband and I off the chair with a feather, we were in shock. She has never had a heart murmur, not since birth or the last time we had her in Oct 2016 for her rabies shot and exam.
I asked if it could be her diet, he wasn't sure. I search out and ordered supplements and a different food, still grain free but meat is first. I contacted NB and I have a case number. In March we will be taking her to a cardiologist and see if we can get to the bottom of this. If this is the fault of the food, I'm contacting everyone. Like I said I'm pretty pissed off right now. Not only is she our baby she is a 2500 dog! Reading all these comments is telling that there is a problem with this food, clearly. Oh we switched to Sport dog from Canada pea free.

My dog had been having diarrhea for a while and itchy skin for the longest I could not figure out why. I’ve had him on the same food for many years and after doing a lot of research decided it was time to switch his dog food. I was thinking possibly my dog can be allergic to the food I have been giving him so I looked online at different brands and read a lot of reviews and decided to go with natural balance seems like it had a lot of good reviews. Well after one serving, his diarrhea went away. So I was extremely happy about that. But the following day I started noticing a strong smell of cat pee on him. I thought maybe while I was walking him he may have got too close to a bush that a cat could have been hiding in or peed in.
I also noticed he also has been scratching more than ever. He’s scratching himself so hard I’m worried he’s going to make himself start bleeding. I gave him a bath, the smell was gone and he was happy. I washed all his beds and then about an hour later after I fed him the strong smell of cat piss was back again. Now I’m back online and wished I would have done more research bc I’m seeing a lot of complaints from many other people having this same issue with Natural balance. I’m going to have to stop feeding him this because I can’t take this smell anymore it’s making my house smell too. And this food was so expensive too. Now I'm back to looking around for another brand of food. Why is this food causing this foul odor??

She had been fine the night before until 5:30 AM Tuesday morning when she became very agitated. She needed to go out. She will not do the business in the apt. Very loose stool. Three hours later once again agitated. I took her out and her diarrhea was much worse and I could tell she was in pain.

My cat has health issues like hyperthyroid and IBD. I was giving my cat venison food from the vet but soon after I started her on it, it was backordered so I got this NB venison from the pet store. It was easier to get this from the store than travel to the vet so I kept giving it to her. Initially she seemed to like eating it. However at some point she was throwing up more often, to the point of daily vomiting of bile. Then one she just stopped eating. I thought she was going to die. Then I got some of the venison food sold at by the vet and gave it to my cat to see if she would eat it. She gobbled it down. She gained weight (she was scrawny before), and she went from listless to bring & alert. Around the same time that she refused to eat, I gave her a Reiki treatment. It is hard to say what caused this 180 turnaround - she rarely even vomits anymore - but I really think the NB food was bad for her. So be careful before feeding it to your feline sweetheart.

As others have noted I recently noticed a color change of the bag and was a little suspicious but didn't think much of it. But now He's puking constantly and when he does manage to keep it down for a few hours, the food is undigested when he does puke it up. He's also had bouts of diarrhea and the worst gas! I mean it's like somebody died up there LOL. It's bad! So bad that it has gotten me researching and looking into this food a little bit more and I believe that the ingredients have recently changed.
Probably at the same time they changed the color of the bag is when they changed the ingredients? I don't know but I believe it used to be salmon in this food but now it's something else and obviously something not very tolerated by my dog so now he's 15 years old and I'm going to be starting like brand new trying to find a different food that works for him. I watched my dog slip into lethargy with open sores he had chewed on himself (no vomiting or diarrhea) over the course of 9 months. I thought he was done for at 7 1/2 years old. By happenstance I noticed the ingredients had been switched.
I immediately switched him to a new brand and within a month noticed his energy and vitality is back. Two months later, we have our dog back, full of himself and ready to go on walks. How heartbreaking and expensive this whole endeavor has been. Not only was I paying for expensive food he shouldn't have been eating due to one ingredient change but I was paying for ** to quell his allergy itchiness. On the new food, I no longer need **. We have used Natural Balance for almost a decade. Recently all 4 dogs have developed major on-going watery/loose stools. The only common factor with the four dogs (one lives with my sister, one with my parents and 2 with me) is the food. After looking at these reviews I have officially pulled them off NB and moved on to Taste of the Wild. I can’t risk it. My boxer is lethargic and refusing to eat the NB anyway. It was a good run. I hope the company takes this seriously and makes the changes needed to keep our dogs healthy. Right now this food is anything but safe or healthy.

My 14.5 year old schnauzer choked to death. He had eaten Canidae can food for a while and before that he had eaten other quality can food products. I got him the Nature Balance Van Patten chicken flavor roll and he was dead within a few days. The food was caught in his throat. Apparently he had tried to drink a lot of water to loosen it or soften it to swallow. He didn't make it. We found him dead when we came home. I am beyond devastated. Please if you use this product be very diligent when they eat or moisten it before you give it to them. This loss is forever. The way he died haunts me. I can't explain it. Our love for these babies is undefinable. Losing my child (dog) this way is so hard to deal with.

Early this AM (around 5:00 AM) July 22, 2018, I had to rush my Bichon Frise to the local emergency pet clinic. He had developed acute diarrhea and followed up with the severe vomiting (bought some dry kibble in the earlier AM and then by later afternoon was completely clear and bright yellow.) The diarrhea was horrid and basically he was going 7 - 8 times that day (yesterday July 21, 2018). The vet took the fecal sample, injected him with **, gave subcutaneous fluid for dehydration, dispensed ** antibiotic. I handed him the plastic bag with both the Natural Balance Original Ultra Reduced Calorie Formula Ultra Premium Dog Food Kibbles and the can of the Natural Balance LID Chicken and Sweet Potato Formula.
I told him I had just ordered another order of these products on July 2, 2018 and they arrived July 5, 2018. I had finished up the other remaining foods (same) until they run out approx 5 days ago. Then I switched to the new order shipment. I told him when I first opened the can it was rather mushy not as firm as normal in the past and had an unusual odor? I also told him that some of the dry kibble did not always have a same/similar odor and varied colors? He said "perhaps you should contact the Chewy.com and either request a refund or replacement as I had been using both of these products for many months without any physical issues until now.”
I feed my Bichon the same exact amount, product and time each and every day. He has not been put into any groomer (I do it). He has not been boarded nor does he go walking the neighborhood (he rides in a doggie stroller). Sooooo, not due to outside "roaming". Even has his own little fenced in area for his bowels and potty. That is cleaned daily. So, I contacted the Chewy.com today, they are sending another batch after they took my information, shall see. Meanwhile he is on a bland diet for at least another 4 days then gradually (ever so gradually) wean him back to the Natural Balance.
Sure is an expensive Dr bill if in FACT it was the food, sure seems odd about the timing for sure. My little Bichon came from an abused shelter many years ago, so I did not pay a fortune for him but I have given him TONS of love... Sure don't want to feed him something that will make him so sick. The vet said if I wanted to check the dog food would cost around $200 on top of the bill. I rejected that, already have a $277 bill.

Upon the recommendation of my vet, I had been feeding my dog Natural Balance, Duck and Potato for approximately two years due to possible allergies. Since starting her on the diet I had to bring her in for two possible UTIs due to frequent urination and blood in her urine which we treated with antibiotics. Then she developed unrelenting sneezing and coughing which could not be treated with any antibiotics or allergy medicine.
Finally, she refused to eat this food any longer and almost overnight became lethargic and severely dehydrated. In less than 36 hours I had to euthanize her due to her organs failing. There were symptoms of possible pancreatitis or fluid in the lungs. From the information provided recently on the potato based dog foods I would guess this food is what caused her death. These symptoms have been described in many previous posts. I hope this information will help spare someone and their pet from the needless suffering.

We were directed to this brand by a vet due to our puppy's allergies and it had 5 star reviews across the board until a few months ago. We had been using the Venison & Sweet Potato L.I.D. for over a year before I started to notice my dog was suddenly starting to behave very differently. She would sniff her food and not eat, then whenever she did eat, she would cough/gag. She would cry at me 24/7, no matter what I did for her, she was inconsolable. Constantly needing to pee, frequently squatting. I caught her throwing up yellow bile. When I googled her symptoms, it seemed like she had a UTI or something liver-related. After at least 3 visits to the vet to no avail, I thought to do some updated research on her food again which is when I stumbled upon all these negative reviews with dogs displaying similar symptoms. Thanks to the reviews on this site, we were alerted to the change in owners and formulation.
It's been roughly one week since immediately changing her food with vet approval and giving her a pet probiotic, she is finally returning to normal after this hell of an experience. Will never buy Natural Balance products again. Made my perfectly healthy 2 year old puppy very sick and I'm certain could've eventually killed her if I ignored it long enough. This product should not be on the shelves!

I started feeding Natural Balance LID dog food 20 years ago and have fed it to all of my dogs religiously since then. They used to advertise that the first ingredient was protein. The name of the food has always been Protein & Veg (Duck & Potato/Venison & Sweet Potato etc.) They’ve changed their formulas on this and the much-loved log roll food, that I used to train all of my puppies until my last one. Protein is no longer the first ingredient, and my dogs don’t like it as much. They have also steadily raised the prices while making the bags smaller. And yes, my dogs too, have started having more episodes of G.I. problems. I am now steadily moving them to a limited ingredient, raw-based food diet. I will stop buying NB as soon as I have transitioned my pups. Dick Van Patten is rolling in his grave, and his heirs should be ashamed of themselves.

My 2 bulldogs have been on this food for years (1 for 7 and 1 for 3) due to food sensitivities. The last bag (Lamb and Rice LID) I purchased on June 8, 2018 made both my dogs sick with diarrhea and GI problems. At first did not realize it was the food. Put them on rice and pumpkin to settle their stomachs. Slowly restarted the food and it happened all over again 2 days later. Due to 5 days of diarrhea I had to bring them both to the vet ($500+ later). My older dog barely is getting up from his bed. After reading some reviews on different sites this seems to be a recent trend with the Natural Balance products. I contacted the company and all they could say was that there was a formula change a couple months ago and that they test for 9 contaminants. Was not very satisfied with their response. I was worried maybe his teeth were hurting. I check them and they were fine, but added a bit of water to his food. He started eating it but would then throw up occasionally (Green pea and Salmon). When I went to the store to buy another bag this weekend, they said the supplier is having an "issue" with this formulation and the only one available for me to buy was the Green pea and chicken. He's eating this one enthusiastically, but my trust has been broken. He still seems to be losing a bit of weight as well and it's noticeable for a cat that was at 14 pounds just a few weeks ago. We recently switched to Natural Balance Chicken and Sweet Potato dry food. We gradually switched using a mixture of old food and Natural Balance Brand. After a week or so, our 7 year old became very bloated and his legs swelled. Concerned because this had never happened before, we rushed to an emergency vet. After blood and urine tests, it showed he was losing protein. Also did an ultrasound and no other issues were found and kidneys looked normal. Due to the amount of loss detected in his tests, he has been diagnosed as severe kidney disease and prescribed medications and a special kidney care diet. I have to question this and had thoughts from the get go that it might be food related.
He hasn't lost any weight and was an extremely active and happy dog before our rush to emergency and even then was ready to play and energetic. Eating eagerly etc. To think that he has severe kidney disease is hard to swallow. $1000+ later of vet bills, tests, plus meds and special diet, I can't help but think it is food related especially after reading other reviews. I will be sure to tell anyone that is thinking to buy this food to try another brand as it simply is not worth the risk! Our story is too similar to other stories.

I’m reading the poor reviews for this product and all I can think is “really”? Almost everyone starts with I changed my pets food or I decided to try... First of all changing your pet's food is a process not to be done spontaneously or quickly. It’s a slow introduction process. That’s why your pets are sick. And if your pet has a food allergy you need to read ALL ingredients before introducing the food. One person said he found worms in the roll food. Although not appealing, you have to wonder how many worms your pets eat outside. Natural is natural. This food has been the best I have ever purchased for my pets. They thrive well with no issues. I have a dog with digestive issues and allergies and he does very well with this food. In my opinion the poor reviews are due to user error and not the food itself.

I’ve been feeding my dogs Natural Balance dry Sweet Potatoe and Venison for about 5 years now. I chose this food, because I was looking for the healthiest diet with the least cheap fillers in it, and at the time this seemed to be the best food. They did well on this until September of 2017. They all started getting sick and I contacted the store I purchased it from as well as Natural Balance who assured me there hadn’t been any changes. I was sent another bag and it seemed to be a bit better as their tummy’s calmed down.
In the next few months I started to notice they wouldn’t eat their food all day until they were super hungry at night and would not finish it. In Late November 2017 they all started having horrible gas and bloating and looked like they felt miserable. I called the store I purchased from again and gave them the details and the batch numbers on the bag. They didn’t offer a refund or anything and shipped out my next bag, saying to get back to them after the dogs eat the new bag of food. Well they did start the new bag and the same thing, they didn’t want to eat. I got a call from natural balance again and they said nothing changed, but we’re surprised I was still getting the dog food since they had been back ordered due to a shortage of Venison, hmm.
Nobody mentioned this to me before. By the time I spoke to them, my dogs all has loose stool, horrible gas and were miserable. I stopped the food for a week and have them rice and boiled turkey breast and they seemed a little better. As soon as I started the food back up, they were all miserable again. One dog started vomiting for 24 hrs and having pure watery diarrhea. The others still ate the food a little and were not feeling well. We took in stool samples to the vet paid for blood work, urine cultures and had to have our dog injected with antibiotics and nausea medicine. It was a nightmare. He had us up all night for two days prior to being able to get him to the vet. We live in a rural area and weren’t able to get to our vet until Monday. He is off of the food and is on medicine and hopefully healing.
The other two dogs were still on the food this past week and would not finish it. Now all are having horrible watery diarrhea and gas and we are stopping the food for good. Of course it’s the weekend again and we can’t get them to our Vet until Monday. We have already put a call into our vet about this and are hoping they can help all of our babies. This is so stressful and is making me sick worrying about our babies who we give the best care. All of our dogs are healthy or were before this started happening. Everyone had a clean bill of Health in October with healthy lab work, fecals, and all.
I’m feeling like there’s something Natural Balance is not admitting and it’s slowly killing my dogs. Natural Balance, step up and stop putting garbage in your foods, or sourcing from China if that’s what you’re doing. I’m sleepless, and sick worrying about whether or not my dogs are going to get better. Natural Balance I will be calling you and the company who ships food to us Monday to give you more information on this matter and to express my frustration.

If you have the extra income to be able to afford it, yes it is then you wouldn't have to work as hard as I do to feed them as nutritionally, but much more economically. I buy a very good dog, but much cheaper and it doesn't have enough nutrients to meet my dogs' needs, so I meet that with dog safe fruit, vegetables, grains, and protein, which I buy separately and prepare myself and mix and freeze with the dry dog food that I buy. Let me start by saying I'm not a crazy vegan trying to push my diet on my pet. I got my Momo in 2002 as a 3-month old puppy who was dumped on the side of the road with her litter mates in farm country where there is no dog shelter. She was some sort of lab mix and my then boyfriend (now husband) and I loved and doted on her then as we do our own biological children now. We believe if you take on the responsibility of adopting an animal you do so for life and you have a responsibility to give them a quality of life. Around 6 months of age, Mo started obsessively licking her paws and belly until she was bald and raw and she constantly scratched herself. The vet confirmed she was free from fleas and any other parasites. I knew dogs that got heat rash and would lick but our dog was exclusively indoors except for leash walks. This is when the internet was really growing and I worked in IT so I started reaching out online.
It seemed her allergy had to be systemic and I became certain it was diet related. I began cycling through diets - raw meat, home cooked, you name it, but she still suffered. You read a lot today about dogs allergic to grains, but back then I stumbled on a few articles about dogs allergic to animal protein. That would explain why she hadn't improved on any of the homemade diets. I searched for a vegetarian formula dog food and the only one available at the time was this one from Natural Balance. Only problem it was a specialty food at the time and hard to find. The closest store that sold it was 100 miles away. Buying online and having it shipped was cost-prohibitive for a 60-pound lab mix. Thankfully, there was one pet store in my hometown (about 200 miles away) that sold it. Since we visited my parents regularly, we decided to try a bag the next time we visited. All of her symptoms cleared immediately.
Initially my vet thought I was absolutely bonkers, but year after year at Mo's annual checkup, he would look her over and comment on how great her coat looked and ask what I was feeding her. After a few years he stopped looking shocked when I reminded him that she was on the vegetarian food because of her allergies. We made stocking up on dog food a part of our visits to my parents. Around the time Mo was age 11 or 12, Petsmart started carrying Natural Balance and I couldn't have been any more ecstatic. Other companies started coming out with vegetarian formulas that seemed more palatable but they just don't seem to have the same high nutritional content.
We finally had to say goodbye to our Mo this past April after 14 years which is pretty amazing for a large dog. We truly believe that her food contributed to her overall health and longevity so our new puppy also eats Natural Balance (though we give her the slightly cheaper kind with animal proteins). Thank you for providing a quality food for our beloved family members.

My 2 year old Jack Russell mix has always had food allergies requiring a limited ingredient diet. Most recently with the stress of my being away for a 2 week hospital stay he developed IBS (Intestinal Bowel Syndrome). Putting him on a bland diet didn't really help. My vet said to feed an uncommon protein as well as keeping his diet very restricted. I picked up a bag of Natural Balance L.I.D. Sweet Potato & Venison kibble and also the wet food. When I adopted my dog several years ago, she was a few years old and came with a large bag of prescription food designed for dogs with wheat allergies. After her first visit, I was informed it was unlikely she had a wheat allergy and was relieved, because the food cost over $50/bag. After she finished the bag, I purchased a more affordable bag of food for her and it made her completely miserable with scratching. Over the next few months I tried several different foods with her to no avail, she was itchy, and suffering from chronic ear infections and digestion problems.
I had just about resigned myself to paying for the prescription dog food again when I tried Natural Balance's Salmon and Sweet Potato formula (my dog had shown a very negative reaction to beef-first and even chicken-first foods, so I knew I needed to go with a fish formula), and it was a game changer. She's been eating nothing else for a few years now and it has significantly improved her quality of life. She has so many allergies, she can't even have treats most dogs can eat, luckily Natural Balance has a dog cookie in the same Salmon flavor that she's nuts for!

Our 3-year-old English Setter mix was prone to itchy skin rashes. PetSmart recommended the Natural Balance Rabbit and Potato. He did really well on that and we were satisfied. They discontinued the rabbit and potato so we switched him to venison and sweet potato. Soon after, we adopted a Jack Russell-Chihuahua puppy. We couldn't keep her out of her big brother's food and she smelled awful, like cat pee. Bathing didn't help. I started worrying something was medically wrong with her and Googled it, and found a number of reports of Natural Balance making dogs smell like cat pee.
We switched to Under the Sun lamb variety (mixed with an over the counter probiotic powder for dogs since I wanted to stop Natural Balance right away, not phase it out) and after one meal we noticed an immediate improvement. Within 48 hours, she smelled delightfully puppy-like and I'm so relieved the problem was that simple to fix. Wish I'd solved it weeks ago and thought our story might help others get to the root of the problem sooner!

My dog suffered from loose stools on other brands, but after switching to Natural Balance her stools are very firm and easy to pick up. I really like this company. My only complaint is that I would like to see meat as the first ingredient. I also like the unique shape and size of the kibble which is shaped like a flattened disc which encourages dogs to chew rather than just swallow the kibble whole. Overall I'm very satisfied with the results of this brand and would recommend it to others. I really love that Natural Balance has so many flavors to choose from and that they make limited ingredient treats as well. Right now my dog's on sweet potato and venison.

My English bulldog always suffered from skin issues so I thought switching him to duck and potatoes would be a good idea. After 2 weeks of feeding him this he started to swell. It was 350.00 at the vet, blood work showed low protein in blood. First vet couldn't figured his diagnosis out. It was an animal hospital at that. Second vet told me was a reaction to the dog food. My dog almost died from dehydration and he was bad, didn't move for the whole weekend. So I stopped the food, swelling went down and he looks a lot better. Just beware if any one deals with this with their animal, stop food. He was always on Purina One lamb and rice so I will switch back to that and never use this food again. Almost cost his life and for 61 dollars for a 25 lb bag it is unbelievable. I know all dogs are different but I just am so upset he is getting boiled chicken and rice for now.

First let me say my 2 small dogs have enjoyed the Vegetarian Formula and I never had a problem. Both my dogs extremely active running their yard every chance they'd get. This past December I purchased the Duck and Potato because it was on clearance at 1/2 price, not realizing the food was being discontinued at my local pet store. The first dinner serving was 1/2 cup. My 12 yr old cockapoo ate it right up. My 7 yr old terrier won't touch it. Within an hour my cockapoo began coughing and choking but nothing was coming up. He coughed through out night and spent the next 2 days in his crate. Won't come out to eat, drink or go outside. His eyes became very watery and his nose was dripping and that horrible cough! He couldn't stand up on his own and was shaking constantly.
On the morning of the 3rd day I realized something was terribly wrong. I began spoon feeding him water and a homemade lentil soup recipe (lentils, rice, carrots and spinach). So here we are 1 month later and he can finally stand on his own. Still shaking but not as bad. He lost 4 lbs out of his original 12. A blanket helps calm his shaking. I have to carry him down the stairs and from there he can manage to go potty. I still give him the soup twice a day and water with 2 drops of chlorophyll.
As I researched the "dog food" industry I have become aware of the human greed in all this. The destruction of animals for our food gives rise to all the left overs that are imposed on our pets. Regardless if it's healthy for them or not. I choose not to support the dog food industry anymore but take the time and effort to create food for them that I know will be beneficial..... PS I didn't bother to return the 2 bags I bought... I threw them away!!

We didn't put it all together until my boyfriend was doing some research and found all these reports and reviews from other pet owners about the negative affects their pets were experiencing, and now we can't believe how naive we were to all the signs. Here's everything we have noticed:
5y/o English bulldog- he has been eating this brand for the past few years, but only in the last year or so has his breathing been getting worse. At the slightest bit of excitement (when we get home from work, someone new comes over, etc), he starts huffing and has what I would equate to an asthma attack. I specifically thought this was just a 'bulldog thing' because their breathing is naturally a bit more restrictive and problematic. Randomly a month ago, he spent 2 days not eating and throwing up multiple times.
6 month old Corgi- she has been eating this food since we brought her home at 8 weeks old. She came from a healthy line of dogs and a responsible breeder. The first sign was around Christmas time when we started noticing small traces of blood in her urine. Worried, we took her to the vet to get tested for a UTI, she was put on antibiotics but everything came back normal. Hmmn. The blood stopped, so we assumed the issue was taken care of. Shortly after that, she too began to huff and have small little 'asthma attacks' in the mornings, or when someone new comes home. Not normal for a corgi, especially a young otherwise healthy and energetic dog.
So here it is, between our 2 dogs in the past six months, we've had vomiting, blood in urine, and BOTH having breathing issues/mini asthma attacks. Will be dumping out the ENTIRE container of New Balance food the SECOND I get home and NEVER buying this again!!

Anyway, my previously healthy Lhasa poo started getting diarrhea followed by severely bloated abdomen. So much so we had to take her to off hours emergency vet. After battery of tests and overnight stay ($1k + another $500 in follow ups) they determined she had pancreatitis. That was two weeks ago, she was put on Science Diet i/d food and was doing much better. Thinking that she originally had eaten something she shouldn't (wood chip, cardboard, etc...) we started integrating the Natural balance food back into her diet. Two days later, back at the vet again for uncontrollable shaking & distended abdomen for another $500 over a couple days to again hear she has pancreatitis still/again (thankfully no additional problems).
A few google searches on Natural Balance post Del Monte and see other owners with same problems. Good bye forever, wish I could sue you. I will definitely be informing my local pet food store and hopefully persuade them to drop the entire line.

I'm another person who feeds our dogs the NB beef formula roll along with their regular food. I've been buying it for years and when we recently moved to California, I was able to continue getting it at an independent pet store (Haute Dog) in Vallejo CA. Our most recent tube is from Lot# 335710. Like other responders, I have definitely noticed a change in the texture - it's much drier and crumbly, which I am personally not a fan of. However, as far as my dogs are concerned, it's business as usual. They like it as much as they liked the original formulation, and no one has had any GI issues from it at all.

I would give it zero stars if I could. My 9 year old terrier has always eaten the original DVP Beef Roll. The new formula smelled nasty, had a weird grainy texture and made her throw up right after she ate it. Thinking I had a bad roll, I tried a different roll with a different lot number and she wouldn't even walk near the bowl. Several months ago, I emailed DVP and got a nice email offering refund, replacement or coupons. I had lost my receipt and definitely didn't want coupons or replacement. I saw on another review where someone said they had been told that DVP was reformulating the rolls again.
I emailed them last week to ask about this. I received a call from a very nice young woman who explained that they were reformulating the rolls but NOT going back to the original product. This new formula is supposed to be available in April 2015. I told her this debacle reminded me of when Coca-Cola came out with New Coke and everyone hated it. At least Coca-Cola realized their mistake. I asked her if they read the reviews on the WEB and told her they were overwhelmingly bad since they reformulated the rolls. She said they DIDN'T and unless you email the company directly, they will not hear your complaints.
So if you want to register your thoughts about the new formula, email the company. In the past few months, I have tried almost every known reputable brand of dry and wet food trying to find something she would eat. I finally resorted to feeding her bologna or chicken, as she was losing a lot of weight. I finally found Pet Botanics rolls and she LOVES them.

The tube food has been changed, making it dry and my dogs won't eat it, they just walk away. It crumbles when you cut it up and some of it actually looks like powdered crumbles. After many many years offering this to our dogs, we are now having to find another dog food which is reeking havoc on their digestive systems. We are to say the least disappointed in this decision. Are you trying to save money? It was perfect the way it was. I would like to hear from the company as to what they plan to do or if they going to do anything at all? And "we are sorry" isn't good enough. Not after being a loyal customer for so long. Many of us out there want to see the previous recipe brought back...

After nearly 3 years of consistent purchases of the NB dry cat food - Pea and Salmon, I am sorry to say that I am looking for another LID food for my cat with allergies of poultry and grain. I buy 10# bags by the pair off the internet from various vendors. Two bags ago, I noticed my cats not as enthused about eating the food, very unusual and started to be concerned. I recently received 2 new bags, and after eating the food, within an hour they both (one is 9 years old, the other 3 years old and unrelated, not even the same breed) threw up the barely-digested crunchies, and later the same day both threw up clear-ish liquid. By that time, already with concerns of the previous bags of NB food, I had taken the food away. The next day, they both seem to be doing fine, thank God. It is interesting to find so many comments about the quality apparently dissipating. I called yesterday but have yet to reach someone at NB.

I am saddened that the quality of Natural Balance has declined dramatically since Del Monte has purchased the company. As a dog walker, I have used their products in the past for the dogs I work with that have allergies. The dogs now refuse the treats. I noticed they now smell off; they used to have a nice savory scent. My concern is that the treats and food may now longer be safe for pets that have severe allergies. How can we be sure Del Monte is carrying on the high standards set by Natural Balance?

I have been looking for why my dog has sustained liver damage and stumbled onto this site. I found a lot of similar issues associated with Nutro dog food. I was thinking that was what I bought in Nov 2014. Then I checked out the bag and found I actually bought Natural Balance dog food. I have found that both of these foods have been causing liver & pancreatic problems. I don't know if it’s an ingredient that both manufacturers are using in the food. But something in these dog foods is causing severe damage to our animals both cats & dogs. I am fast approaching $2000.00 at the vet. My goldendoodle has had to have 16 lbs of fluid drained from bloat, 2 ultrasounds, fluid hydration, antibiotics, liver cleanse pills. Half of her liver is badly shriveled. I still don't know whether she will be ok or not.
The vet put her on Science Diet Hepatic Dog Food. She doesn't want to eat it. I have read that chicken & rice detoxes dogs. I am now mixing it with the hepatic food to get the nutrients for the liver. She loves her chicken and rice with veggies. I believe people need to be warned about what’s going on with these dog foods. Something is going on with the manufacturing process of these foods. It's costing people a lot in vet bills and even worse the loss of our beloved animals. We spend tons of money on higher priced dog foods thinking we are helping our animals. Instead of helping them it seems some of these foods claiming to be good for our pets are making them sick and in many cases killing them. Google Nutro reviews and you will see review after review on pets becoming seriously ill and dying.

I got a call today from a very nice gal from Natural Balance, who was apologetic and interested in trying to figure out what happened (and why). It's not often that a company goes to the trouble to resolve a situation like this.
While I won't feed Natural Balance to my Dachshund ever again (better to be safe than sorry!), I will certainly ponder it for future pets after having talked with a representative of the company.

I've bought this food for my Doberman and my Dachshund for a while now, mainly because it has limited ingredients. The last bag I bought was duck and potato, and shortly after they started eating it, my Dachshund mysteriously and suddenly developed HGE symptoms. Having watched him vomit and poop bright red blood (after having a bad case of the runs), I rushed him to his vet, and he received treatment to the tune of $135.00. Not realizing the food was the culprit (it's the only common denominator), I continued to feed him the food and after his meds ran out, the vomiting and bloody soft stools returned. While the Doberman did not have blood in his stool, his stools were much softer than usual. Contaminated bag? Maybe so. But I'm not willing to put my dogs through this again. I thought I was buying them with a quality food, and I inadvertently ended up making one of them very sick. I'm switching to Wellness Core NOW!

I slowly switched them over to LID Sweet Potato & Chicken because of the low amount of protein in it. After the second day of eating Natural Balance alone, they developed diarrhea, began vomiting and refused to eat the stuff. Cleaning up 3 dogs' runny poop and vomit is not fun. My Maltese is probably the fussiest eater in the world. Luckily, we were able to get her to eat Natural Balance rolls. We also got our two others to eat it and they loved it... until the formula change. We've wasted a lot of money on uneaten rolls, but didn't know what was going on. The new stuff had a new packaging and we noticed some differences, but the main thing we noticed was that the dogs didn't go nuts over it anymore. And on top of that, we do recall the dogs getting sick around then as well, but thought more of stomach virus or something like that. Once they got sick, they totally refused the food, to the point that we ended up having to throw out the huge rolls we had bought. Usually, between the three of them, those rolls would go so quickly that we didn't even have to worry about them going bad. The new rolls, I can't even bribe them to eat.
I even tried the usual mix of dog food with applesauce, with chicken broth, shredded cheese, and even with gravy... but no... even the two who aren't fussy wouldn't eat them. Same scenario with the cats. You'd think out of four cats and three dogs, one of them would eat it...wrong. Not one of them want it at all. I don't know if there was a market analysis done or even a focus group, but ours won't eat it and many others on here won't either. So if this version sells pretty well, why not have both of them so we can get our animals back to eating like they used to instead of curling their upper lip and walking away at feeding time. Personally, I don't need an attorney, I need a food my animals will eat instead of having a gazillion brands they won't touch more than twice. And I'm hoping that food will be Natural Balance roll since they used to love it so much.

As a trainer, I had used the Natural Balance Lamb Roll as a fantastic training tool with my training classes, as well as my own dogs. Great product! Healthy, easy to use in training w/ no greasy feel, and it held together beautifully. The BEST thing about it though was that dogs LOVED it, and it was a GREAT tool in getting a dog trained with positive reinforcement. THEN...Natural Balance has quit making all the different meat based rolls, including this lamb roll. I bought the ONLY roll that Natural Balance makes now, the "DOG FOOD ROLL", made with lamb and chicken. I expected little change from the lamb roll. I was SOOOO wrong! The first thing that I noticed was it looked totally different. You can't see the obvious meat in this roll, as you could with the lamb roll. No big deal, I thought. When I took it to the first training class I was teaching with it, I was shocked to see that the pieces (cut like French fries) fall apart. After a few minutes, I had "sawdust" in my hand! I'm not kidding...it was awful! Crumbs falling do NOT help keep the dog's attention on the trainer. They are too busy trying to clean up the floor!
That ONE class was enough of a test that I knew I wouldn't be using this again as a treat. But... I have two senior dogs with plenty of missing teeth. They loved the Lamb Roll as dinner! But... not so much with this new recipe. They look at me like "You've got to be kidding!" I immediately emailed Natural Balance when I got home from that first class where I tried the new roll, and told them my feelings about this product. It was apparent they'd had other complaints, as I was told that they are redoing the formula, and to please give them to the first of the year to get it changed. I was polite, and so was the lady I was in touch with. My fingers are crossed HARD that this company will come to their senses and bring back the ORIGINAL LAMB ROLL!!!! This product crumbles/ falls apart. My dogs take the treats, go to another part of the room, and spit them out. I am picking up these treat pieces all over the floor, and uneaten. I want to thank Natural Balance company for changing their formula. Since they have stopped making " the good stuff", I am deciding to try my hand at making my OWN line of Lamb and Rice dog food treats using a formula similar to their old one. All 3 of the can foods are a different type. She gulped it down and then vomited it all up. I thought maybe she had just eaten too fast. Same thing happened with the 2nd can and she won't touch the 3rd. She won't eat the new bag of rabbit either and is now driving me crazy and eating the dog's food. I have bought this product in the stores often and feed it to my dog every morning on top of her kibble for breakfast. This is the first time I ordered it from Amazon, and I noticed the food looks different that it did before. Was this product changed? My dog is not a picky eater, but today when I put this on her kibble, she sniffed at it and walked away instead of quickly eating her breakfast as usual. Then after a while (she must’ve been really hungry), she ate it. Then within 15 minutes, she had thrown up on my brand new, white flokati wool rug. Then a few minutes later, she made her first #2 accident in my apartment (thank God not on the rug, but in my bedroom – even though we had just taken her morning walk and she had pooped outside). Then within 20 minutes, she threw up 2 more times on my white rug. Her entire breakfast she threw up by now. So basically, this gave my dog the equivalent of what happens to humans when we get food poisoning and it comes out both ends.
What happened to this product? It looks different - the packaging looks different. Is this being manufactured in China or something? This made my dog very, very sick. I won’t be buying again unless I see the old formula. This one is much lighter in color. The ingredients have to be different and whatever they've done is not good. No one wants their pet getting sick – like they are being poisoned – from the food they are being fed. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. I ended up googling "did Natural Balance change their formula" and found this site. UGH.

I bought the latest bag on June 9, and left her at the vet for 12 days. Upon my return, I found her with patches of hair that were missing (just as before before starting NB). I figured it was the stress. Once we got home, she continued to eat her food. After 3 days, the rest of the symptoms that had previously been resolved ALL came back. She broke out in hives; which warranted a visit to the vet. She was given steroids by vein, benadryl, and something for her stomach. She was fine, and then she ate NB. When she woke up the next day and had breakfast, all it took was a couple of hours for her to throw up uncontrollably. I took her back to the vet, and they gave her a Cerenia shot; which almost killed her.
They sent me home with soft food from the vet..I/D for G I health (? ) She ate it fine, and no vomit or diarrhea. I finished the cans, from vet, on Sunday, and started her back on the NB grain free soft food on Monday. I added the dry food (the same bag she ate at the vet). I gave her very little (1/3 of regular portion) mixed with the soft food. Today is Tuesday (24 hours) after restarting on NB, and once again threw up again. I see the chunks of non digested potato from the duck and potato soft food. She did not throw up once on the food provided by the vet; which means that she was indeed getting better. After restarting NB, she has begun to regress. She is also starting to get hives/bumps, and she is completely down. Needless to say, I wish I would have read this before spending over $300 on vet visits AND almost losing her after reaction to Cerenia.
Something has definitely changed, and it is NOT for the better. I am going to try to return the rest of the food I have left over, and I will have to buy the one from the vet. I am sure this has been a change that has been going on for a couple of months. I will be making a trip to the vets in the morning unless she gets worse and then it will be a visit to the Emergency vets. What am I going to feed her for breakfast? Who made the dumb decision to change the formula?

My dog was really sensitive to all foods. When I got him I had used the breeder's food until he developed a rash a few months in. For the past 3 years he has eaten natural balance duck and potato. I bought the recent bag a few months back and was told they were taken over by Del Monte. My dog wouldn't even touch the food. I wondered what was wrong and started adding his favorite treats to it. He then would eat some and leave it. His poop started being funny, he became a different dog, not interested in moving... A 100-pound labradoodle that was such a clown. He then started throwing up. I took the food back to see they had 10 other bags returned that day. They said everyone is experiencing the same thing. Bad move Del monte. Whatever you did to change this food, it's different and it's making dogs sick!

My dog has been on NB Fat dog for years and loved it. She for some reason has stopped eating it. She was no longer excited about the food 2 months ago but still ate it. Now she will no longer eat it or the NB sweet potato & fish, lamb and rice, or the original. I'm beginning to suspect something is wrong but have not seen any recall information online.

I have bought Natural balance cat food for the last 10 yrs, and dog food for the last 4, and only now has the dog food begun to affect my dog's GI system. I thought she had eaten something off the ground, and ended up GI upset, gas, and blood and mucus in her stool. After a course of Metronidazole, she was better until I reintroduced the NB food. I now know that it is the food, and I will be switching ALL of my pets off of NB. Take care before you buy NB. Del Monte has messed with a formula that worked, and now my dog is paying the price.

Until the formula change, the Natural Balance roll food was the only food my 3-lb chihuahua rescue would eat. The food is completely different now. It no longer has that meaty smell and it is much drier. Since this change, my dog can no longer digest the food and he vomits virtually after every meal. I have bought whatever I can find of the old formula while I try to find a new brand that he will eat. Very disappointing.

Have had my dogs on Natural balance fish and sweet Potato for 2 years with NO issues until now. Bought 2 bags last week, brought home and put in bug proof containers--so, no I don't have bags :-(. None of the 3 will touch it. Period. I've tried mixing canned food, the Great Dane picks out the canned bits but leaves the rest. Nothing. I'm going to eat the cost and go "shopping" for a new brand tomorrow. Don't know what's happened, but something has.

I tried this food in my household, hoping to seek out a food allergy that 2 of my cats may or may not have. The grain free and LID certainly seemed attractive! The result, after 6 weeks, was that 3/4 of our cats were sick! Cat 1 (female) had a UTI with blood in her urine and a bladder full of "sludge," which the vet said meant that her bladder couldn't process the food. She was placed on antibiotics. Cat 2 (female) had a UTI with both white and red blood cells, as well as high glucose. She was placed on antibiotics and had to run a full panel of blood work to make sure there wasn't a further problem. Cat 3 (male) had pain and trouble urinating and was placed on anti-inflammatory medication. Cat 4 (female) showed no urinary distress. The consensus from 2 different vets was to stop feeding them this food IMMEDIATELY! After spending over $400 on vet bills, I will NEVER AGAIN use this food!

My shih tzu ate Natural Balance LID Sweet Potato and Venison from 2010-2013. She loved the food and was extremely picky otherwise. In that time, she began having seizures which we attributed to her being attacked by a pit bull in 2008. We believed it was a residual issue and not caused by food. Because of her seizures and her medication, her blood pressure was elevated and she lost her eyesight. We spent thousands of dollars and endured multiple visits to the vet, heartache, frustration, etc. After much researching, we decided to change her food and guess what? It's been eight months with no seizures except once, the time we gave her a small amount of Natural Balance kibble so as to test our theory and be certain. She had a seizure. She now eats Honest Kitchen and beyond not having seizures, she is healthier and happier. I WOULD NEVER GIVE THIS FOOD TO MY DOG and I hope someone else can learn from this.

Within days every stool was loose and he started chewing all skin he could get to. Switching him to Nutro Salmon now. Took him to the vet where I spent over $100 on a cortisone shot, special shampoo and allergy pills. His stool is getting better but he is very reluctant to eat the new food.

I have been feeding my dog the food rolls for about 6 months. Went into Petco and they had not received their shipment, this was about a month ago. Went in yesterday and bought a few medium rolls, that is all that was left. Noticed the new packaging... But when I got home, I also noticed the consistency of the food rolls is now different also. :-( It is no longer moist-like... It is like it has been freeze-dried or something. It falls apart like sand. Why change the consistency of the food when you changed the packaging? Disappointed!

Received a call back immediately from Natural Balance. I was told to return the bag for a refund or exchange and that I would receive 3 vouchers for large food bags of a different flavor. The batch was tested and came back normal and they had not received any other reports on this bag. Bag was possibly contaminated from another source due to tears in the bag.

I recently purchased a bag of Sweet Potato and Venison 28 lb bag dry Dog Food best by April 13th, 2015. When I put this information on your test results site it comes back with nothing. After eating, my dog got violently ill and began throwing it up. After searching online I have found several other people have this problem very recently and they also took their dogs to the vet and had elevated ALT and White Blood Cell counts; my dog did as well. I was wondering if you have had any other complaints or concerns about this dog food and why I cannot view the test results on this batch.

Hopefully we can get him back to health. Hamburger and rice for now. If you feed NB and notice a change in breath smell, stop. Go buy some new, different brand of food. My dog has been eating this food for years but the last bag and cans I bought were on sale very cheap. This is not normal for the cans to be 1.00 off of a can that is 2.49?! But I bought them and after a week my dog started to feel bad. We have taken him to the vet. He has an enlarged liver and high white blood cell count and high liver enzymes. He has not eaten for days and we are going to have to put him down. I find it very suspicious that this food happen to be on sale when for years it has never been and now my dog is going to die. I did notice the canned food did not look the same - it was much more dense. I did comment to the store that my dog was not eating it when I went back and tried switching to another product. We have tried everything and he is continuing to go downhill. I believe it was from the canned food.

In May of 2013, we bought a bag of Natural Balance Potato and Rabbit formula. The lot # was 278V2233, Best used by Dec 04 '13. The bag of food did not smell very good when opened. Within a few days our Jack Russell Terrier became very ill, vomiting, not eating or drinking, and had trouble walking. He spiked a 105 degree temperature and needed emergency veterinary care. It was discovered that his liver was enlarged. His ALT# was 1000, his ALKP# was 615, and his GGT# was 43. An average ALT# is 50, an average ALKP is 100, and an average GGT# 5, so you can see our guy's numbers were off the chart. A sonogram was done to determine the condition of the liver and treatment included subq fluids, antibiotics, Denosyl, Cerenia, and Tramadol.
Several return visits were required as well as repeated lab work to monitor his recovery. Overall we spent in excess of $1500 on veterinary care. We contacted Natural Balance and shared our experience, but was assured that there were no other complaints, and no recalls at that time. After reading the list of complaints compiled here for a similar time period I believe that our dog became ill due to the Natural Balance dog food. We of course stopped feeding it immediately and will never feed it again. Thankfully our Jack Russell recovered and has not had any problems with his liver since.

I called last week to inquire and make a formal complaint about the Canned Dog Venison & Sweet Potato Food. I have noticed that the last 6-8 cases I have purchased, the canned food has had large vegetables that seem to float to the top 1/2 of can. My four year old cocker spaniel, neutered male, threw up this particular lot two days in a row. I also saw lots of light colored colitis (gel) with some blood in his stool as well. He has been on the diet since 10/31/12 and it been a great diet for him.
I called to inquire as to why the food was so chunky vs. a smooth consistency. I was told the batches can differ that much. I have not seen that during the time I have fed this food. Date Code: Best Buy 10 28 16; 3302AW SUN 21:34. I have already switched his food to another venison and potato dog food. I am very concerned about this food though as the manufacturing consistency is suspect. I have contacted the mfg. again as of today.

I have fed Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato to all my dogs for the last 13 years, not only that but I would also tell my grooming clients whose dogs were having allergy issues to switch food to the brand. About 3 months ago, my dogs all got ear infections, hot spots, staining and vomiting. I couldn't believe it, but I called the NB headquarters and asked if they had made ANY change in the formula or ingredients which they firmly denied. With all the dog owners reporting health issues here, something has clearly changed. I have a Great Dane that has been having problems with diarrhea the last couple of months. He became VERY ill after being fed most of our last bag of Natural Balance Dog food. This dog is shown and his illness got worse after the last bag was brought in the second week of the cluster. He exhibited EXPLOSIVE diarrhea, thirst and lethargy. He was seen by 2 vets and had blood work done with no parasitic involvement or other health issues. He was getting worse and was not to eating (sometimes for up to 3 days) and we had exhausted veterinarian ideas and were starting to eliminate things from his diet. Since we have had our Danes on Natural Balance for years that was not suspect until I realized the timing of such massive diarrhea coincided with when I took the handler the last bag of food.
After an online search, I found that Del Monte had bought the company in the Fall and seeing minimal (but nevertheless mentioned) complaints about the food and matching symptoms as my healthy young dog became thinner. I went to the local Pet Food Specialty store and found that they had already pulled the food from their shelves after reading ingredient changes and customer complaint. After a food change, my dog rapidly improved and is back to good health. Had he not been a Giant breed, I do not believe that he would have lived. I did go in to speak with the PetCo manager.
She listened with interest and I did not feel "blown off" as I expected. They have had no other complaints at that store according to the manager. It was a process of elimination but it could not be narrowed to anything else and had such rapid improvement response after the food was taken away. BUYER BEWARE. Dole needs to be ashamed of themselves for altering the recipe of a proven high quality food and should stick to canning pineapple!

Since the terrier has food allergies and needs the limited ingredient food, we started them back on it thinking we may have gotten a bad batch again. They both developed diarrhea again and the terrier began vomiting. We had to take her to the vet where we ended up with a $1600 vet bill. She is home now and is eating "home cooked" foods but is very picky about it. The Aussie is now on Acana but he has begun vomiting on that. The food is undigested.
