I have a Chihuahua, two miniature Schnauzers. The oldest one is 7 years old and the others are far behind. I have been purchasing Canidae food for my pets for over ten years. I chose Canidae because the place I used to work at used it, and the one I work at uses it. It’s word of mouth. I had a Great Dane that had food allergies. It is the one product that wasn’t causing him to break out in hives and stuff. It’s what I fed the Dane, and the other dogs had it too and never had a problem with it. I would much rather give my dogs natural ingredients than feed them something that’s all fillers and a bunch of crap. So I would rather give my dogs quality products. By eating Canidae, they’re getting more nutrition out of the food than if it was nothing more than fillers and stuff like that. So, I’d recommend Canidae. Experience with them was worth it.

I have been purchasing Canidae food for my pets for four years. My friends told me about it. I have three dachshunds that are 14, 10, and 4 years old. It’s most important to feed pets with natural ingredients. I don’t give them table food or vegetables. Eating Canidae just contributes to my pet's health and well-being. Not having any problems with my dogs tells it all. And you wouldn’t even know my oldest dog is 14. I've used other products but I go back to it. I like Canidae and recommend it to other people.

I chose Canidae because it's grain-free which we really, really like. It's a good alternative for us. I have 150-pound white German Shepherd and a 90-pound German Shepherd and they have done amazing on the food. Their coats are wonderful. We have not had any of the problems that we had when we were doing conventional pet foods. So it's just been a very good experience for us. My husband is really the one who's driven that as far as he felt like the Pure would be the best choice for the dogs. So far, he's been proven that because it has all worked out. We're not getting any kind of digestive problems. They're very alert. We were worried about the expense because we have such big dogs but they really don't eat as much as when you feed them cereal dog food. They're much more satisfied with a lesser amount and they have all the good things. We've just been very happy with Canidae. It's worth the money.

I've been selling Canidae for years and I've been purchasing it for my pets for 14 years. I have 6 and 8 years old Weimaraners and one has allergies and very sensitive stomach. Canidae has contributed to the health and well being of my dogs. They do not have as many vet bills as other people's dogs. Overall, they have good health, good coats and good skin so they do very well with it. Feeding pets with natural ingredients is valuable and since I sell this, I have to tell people how good it is. I recommend Canidae to customers.

I have been purchasing Canidae food for my pet for over a decade. I chose them over other pet food brands because of the herbal medicine blend and probiotics. I started with a pure white Shepherd Wolf on it and now I have a Lab-Mastiff blend dog. I get Canidae because there's no wheat, soy, or corn filler. I also have two cats who are on Felidae. It would hopefully keep them disease-free longer. I attribute Canidae to very healthy coats and less chance of illnesses and less time to the vet for illnesses as well. I'm very happy with them. I like the cranberry in the cat formulas. The cats tend to have urinary issues and cranberry helps with that. I’m very satisfied and I recommend Canidae to many friends.

I'm in the pest control business and several years ago there was a Chinese dog food maker that also made rat bait. They killed a bunch of dogs. Rat bait and dogs don't go well together. I have 3 dogs and being canines, they eat meat so I've had stuff that actually has meat in it and it's made in the USA. I bought nothing that was not made in here. This is the reason I buy Canidae for years. I chose the Pure line of food because I pick the ones that's not fishy saying fish in the oil lamb meal. I like the first meal to be pure protein.
I have a 12-year-old Beagle. He runs around like a puppy. My miniature Schnauzer, around 8 or 9, who we call a goat dog because he bounces like a billy goat and that's what we call him, Billy Goat, seems perfectly healthy. Then my Jack Rat Russell Terrier mix is 6 and a half. We value our dogs very much. We feed them both dry and wet and we have no problem with it. We've been happy at all.

They've done really well on it. But we had to switch our English bulldog off of that because we had her on the fish formula one first and it was too fatty and she has some liver issues and so that was causing her to gain too much weight. So we went ahead and put her on the other one. But the other one was not grain-free, and so we had to switch her recently off of the grain-free one because there's other issues with allergies and stuff. But we still have a St. Bernard and he does fine on it. We've had him on it for a couple of years now.

I have been purchasing Canidae for my pets for 2 years. I chose it over other pet food brands because it was a product made in USA and they offered a more natural food for our dogs and I find it very valuable. We particularly chose the Pure line because it is wheat-free and we were told that it's just better for a dog having some digestive problems. We were told that wheat-free was better for them. We have two dogs, one is a 45-pound adopted mix and the other is 30-pound mix. Canidae contributes a lot to our dogs' health and well being because we don't really feed them any table foods or anything. The dog food is pretty much all their diet. We just find it useful to help prevent more vet visits in the future if they get older with any digestive issues or just overall quality and fur quality. The dogs seem to like all flavors so we rotate through just to give them variety. Canidae is a good quality food and it's a local brand so we appreciate that.

I have been purchasing Canidae for about 2 years. I chose it because of the quality. I have a 5 year old German Shepherd. I purchased the Canidae Pure Line for him because he had IBS. I found that it's more beneficial feeding my dog natural ingredients than regular dog food. Compared to some of the other brands, that was just one of the other ones I looked at in the Dog Food Advisor. It was every dog food out there and it will basically tell what's in everything. If you know what you're looking at, it will help you make a choice. Overall, it's a good dog food and I'd recommend it to anybody.

Currently using the Life Stages dry dog food for my 4 year old large breed dog. I appreciate the high quality ingredients and containing no wheat, corn, soy, fillers, antibiotics, hormones, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, which is great and can reduce potential risk/problems related to health or simply, sensitivities. My dog tolerates this food well; has no signs of GI discomfort or distress and stools are normal. He seems to really like it a lot. He eats this much more readily than he ate Iams dry dog food he previously was fed. It is nutrient dense and not as much is needed for feeding due to the nutrient and caloric values, so the extra cost (compared to some) is worth it for me.

Never make the mistake of buying Canidae! I purchased Canidae Platinum Dry Dog Food online. I switched from Nature's Balance Senior formula just because there was a sale on Canidae at Petfooddiriect.com. A deal that was a grave mistake. As soon as I received the food I started feeding half and half with my remaining food to slowly adjust him to the new food. After 2 weeks he was on Canidae full throttle. He never like the food but would nibble on it to prevent starvation. The second day of full Canidae he had diarrhea. The next with blood. Then began the constant itching. All the while constantly straining his rear with little result to suddenly the awakening of the volcano. He has lost 15 lbs in 1 month. My vet cleared him and it is most certainly the food after the process of elimination. I am going back to Nature's Recipe. I will never buy Canidae again. The government needs to shut Canidae down. Fred could still die; hopefully, we can get his health back. Learn from my mistake. Never ever buy Canidae!

We've been feeding our dogs Canidae for the last couple of years. Both of my dogs have always been extremely healthy, never had bouts with diarrhea or vomiting. Now, my dog has the biggest appetite of any dog I've ever known, she'll pretty much eat anything. But she wouldn't even touch the most recent bag we opened, she sniffed at it and then went to lay down. My other dog picked at it, gave in and ate some, and then later that night had explosive diarrhea and vomiting that went on for several days. Whatever they did to this food has made my dog violently ill, and I'm appalled. I will NEVER buy from this company again and I recommend that if you guys care about your animals, you won't touch this food with a 20 foot pole..

I have had my 3 dogs on Canidae dog food for 8 years now and I could not be happier with the food. I use to feed a food that I was told was very good and all my dogs were at the vet every couple months with scratching and sometimes hot spots. When I went to a dog event, I was talking with a retail store that had a booth and they mentioned some ingredient issues that may be causing the issues I was see with my dogs. They gave me samples and I didn't think much about it until my next costly vet visit. I switched foods and 2 dogs did get very loose stools but the store recommended to try some pumpkin. It worked great and they got over the loose stools in a couple of weeks. Now I do a vet visit every couple of years and everything is going great. I am sure my vet misses the visits but I do not. I recommend this food all the time and I have not had anyone complain after they switch. If they notice a loose stool I tell them to try pumpkin and it seems to work well.

After phasing in the food all last month mixed with their old food, the first week they were totally on Canidae, both of them are itching like crazy! Stools are loose, and no signs of fleas or other parasites, as they've been on Comfortis this entire time.
At first I thought it may have been because of their winter coats coming in, but now, after seeing all the reviews here of similar happenings, I'm pretty sure it is the Canidae. My Shepherd is scratching the fur off her neck, she itches so badly, and nothing I have done is helping the poor dears. Now I have another dilemma... I spent my food budget for this month on buying a second bag of Canidae. (It hasn't arrived yet.) And I don't dare feed it to them now. I can't afford to just toss it, and there's no money to buy something different. Hopefully, the place where I ordered it will take it back.

My dog was healthy and eating organic food, but while out of town we had to get him something different. We got him Canidae and about 2 hours later, he threw up. We thought it was due to a small piece of fully cooked burger meat I gave him. The next day he had a huge meal of Canidae again. This time he went only 30 minutes and threw it all up again and was quite sick for the rest of the night. I had never seen him throw up after several months of having him. Have been feeding our dog wet and dry since birth. We would vary between flavors. In July we bought Life Stages Chicken, Lamb and Fish cans. Immediately she had bad diarrhea, strained to pass feces, and also had blood in the feces. Went back to chicken only and she recovered in 3-4 days. We eliminated all treats and bones to isolate what caused the problem. When we reintroduced the Canidae canned food of Chicken, Lamb and Fish, it returned. We will be looking for another line of food, as I am assuming they will eventually change the Chicken formula too.

I recently purchased Canidae dog food from an online pet supply site. I purchased 2 bags (costly) but the product sounded like a dream come true for my dogs. I own 2 male German Shepherd puppies. After just 2 feedings I noticed both dogs scratching terribly. Then a stroll through my backyard showed puddles of diarrhea! I went online to look up the company and read some reviews. WOW!!!!!!
What I can put together here is, this dog food has been great for over 14 years.....in 2014 dogs are getting sick and one GSD owner reported the dog died from bloat after eating the Canidae. Someone needs to find out what has happened to this dog food!! I called the company I ordered the dog food from and they were wonderful! They refunded my money and we worked together right then to get another brand of dog food shipped to me.
My ANGER is this--there were SO MANY complaints about this dog food! Why has the issue not been addressed? Why are people being allowed to purchase what they think is a good product that is clearly making dogs sick and killing them? I am grateful to have caught this before my 2 dogs got any worse and feel sorry for some of the stories I have read today. I am throwing 2- 44 pound bags of dog food in the dumpster. I cannot in good conscience do anything else with this product. I am thankful to have caught this problem quickly and thankful to the company I ordered it from for refunding my money and for not making me ship 88 pounds of dog food back to them.I will not trust Canidae Dog food again!

We purchased a large bag of Canidae Life Stages on 7/20/2014 to start weaning our new puppy off of the bad food she had been on. The more Canidae we added to the mix the less formed her stools became. By the week of 8/4 we were basically just sprinkling the "bad" food on top and most of her feeding was Canidae. By 8/6 she had uncontrolled diarrhea all day. We held food for 12 hours and she did fine, we started with one cup of Canidae and seemed to be fine. 3 hours later we gave her another cup since she was so hungry. In the am, we woke up to a horrible mess in her kennel and more mucus like liquid stool outside. Her vet check was 7/23 and she was just fine. I am awaiting a call from the vet. She seems fine otherwise, no lethargy, she plays and drinks fresh water. We take her out on a leash and she only has run of tiled/wood floors in our home that are not cleaned with any chemicals. I thought she had a virus until I read all of these, now I am almost certain it is the food. I will add to this when I speak to the vet today.

We have fed 5 dogs Canidae exclusively for 14 tears - it was recommended by our breeder, very cautious and responsible breeder of therapy dogs - and have healthy dogs, including a 13 year old Golden who can still beat any other canine to a thrown ball! We also have seen an older dog, a lab, who was switched from another "premium" dog food to Canidae have renewed energy and health after the switch. As for the "Procter and Gamble ownership and China source of meat", it is untrue, distressing that a reviewer would write that about a family owned company causes one to wonder if the negative reviews were fabricated by employees of a competitor who play dirty...

I've been feeding my dog Canidae for about a year now. I just opened a new bag (August 1) and my dog started having diarrhea and vomiting everywhere. I figured she got into something because she got better after a few days of not eating. Then she ate Canidae food after a few days and the entire cycle started over. I'm not sure why Canidae is rated so high when so many customers have had the same problem with the dog food.

Our dog has only been fed all stages Canidae (green bag) since we got him 4 years ago. It was more expensive but it came highly recommended by a dog store in North Hollywood. Recently our dog became super itchy and I asked my husband what he had eaten. My husband then said the bag looked different but it was the right one, he confirmed it with the owner of the feed store and the bag said the same thing as the other, just a different color. We stopped the Canidae - went to solely lamb and brown rice and the itch went away. We took the bag back. It seems now like the brown rice and lamb with veggies and greens doesn't seem to keep him satisfied as the original Canidae combo so he's eating things he shouldn't. We are on the market for a new dry dog food to supplement but it won't be Canidae.

We have been feeding our golden retriever puppy Canidae All Life Stages since February when we switched him from what the original owner was feeding him when he was born. He has not had any problems until now. The latest 44# bag was purchased at Farm and Fleet on July 18th. We opened the bag two days after we bought it. So he started eating from this bag around July 20th. On Sunday evening (July 27th) he started having really bad diarrhea all night. No vomiting but he was acting like he didn't feel well. By Monday morning he seemed fine. Then Monday night same thing again. We wanted to see if he had eaten something weird or if he was really sick.
Keep in mind that he had recently been to a well appointment at the vet and everything was fine. So we fed him white rice with egg on top for both of his meals on Tuesday and Wednesday. Didn't poop on Tuesday but had a regular bowel movement on Wednesday. We fed him the Canidae for his morning meal on Thursday and came home to a stinky mess in kennel Thursday evening. So now we know it's the dog food. Farm and Fleet said they will take it back and refund us for the bag but I wanted to make sure my dog's issues were in writing as well so others can be warned.

I've been feeding Canidae chicken and rice for almost a year with no issues until now. The most recent bag was ordered through Amazon (which is how we normally purchase the food) and started feeding on May 31st. We have two rescue dogs (3 year old collie mix and 1 year old pit mix) who started having diarrhea after beginning the new bag. At first we thought it was the treats, so we stopped everything but some trusted homemade biscuits. When that didn't work, I contacted Canidae directly via email to ask if they had been having any complaints. Their kind response was no, but to send them the manufacture date and UPC so they could record the incident and to mail the UPC in so they could send me a voucher for a free bag. I responded with the best by date they wanted and told them I'd put the UPC in the mail.
Before mailing it in I was smart enough to look online and saw that many other dog owners were having similar issues with their most recent bags... We stopped the food immediately, went on a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice (with pumpkin puree thrown in once a day to help with stools), and they improved quickly. I'm returning the bag of Canidae to Amazon for a full refund, and have contacted the FDA with a formal complaint. We have appointments to turn in some of the old food along with stool samples next week to the FDA for further testing. Take my advice, it's definitely the dog food. Don't delay; switch to something else today!!!

I bought Canidae Life Stages for my dogs about 7 days ago. I bought it because I had researched it in the past and it was one of the top rated dry grain-free dog foods. I have 2 pitbull terriers, male and female, ages 6 and 7. The male seems to be ok, but the female has been having very bad diarrhea after each time I feed her. No vomiting, just mushy stool in large amounts.
I didn't gradually change her food because she had been on bowel rest with a rice and chicken diet prior to me starting the new dry food, so I wanted to start her back on a really good formula and sadly chose Canidae, which I am now discovering has been causing severe diarrhea in various dog breeds across many states. I've thrown out the rest of the food, thankful my male has been ok, but could have been worse. I'm disappointed with the brand and definitely won't use them again! Hope this helps other dog owners to steer clear of this brand.

We've been feeding our dog Canidae dog food for several months. I went and purchased a new bag last Wednesday. Gave my dog his food Wednesday evening as always. The next morning my boyfriend alerted me that he noticed that our puppy had a runny bowel movement. We both thought it was due to the fact that he attended daycare the previous day and he may have eaten something that didn't agree with his stomach. We agreed to see if he would improve after a day. Friday there were no improvements so I decided to give his stomach a break as recommended. The next day he was sluggish so we took him in to be checked by the vet. They recommended a bland diet.
After feeding him rice and chicken that day instead of the Canidae dog food, he didn't poop at all that day. This worried me as well. We then learned that 100% pumpkin is good because of the fiber it contains. He didn't eat the pumpkin so I decided to mix it with a little bit of his Canidae dog food. Bad choice, he began to have bowel movements again but they were extremely runny. He spent the whole day pooping and we were up every 2 hours to let him poop that night. I began doing more research and I realized it had to be his food. Upon further research by my boyfriend he discovered all of the horrible reviews. I'm glad we now know what is causing my sweet puppy so much trouble. I WILL NEVER BUY THIS BRAND AGAIN!

Our 2-yr-old started rubbing his face in the food and growling at it but still ate (he is a bit strange so we never thought about his reaction). Neither dog has ever been sick other than from getting into table food once in a great while. Last week, both dogs simultaneously developed explosive diarrhea and vomiting. We withheld food for 24 hours and resumed with boiled hamburger and rice.
Once their stools returned normal, we gave small meals of Canidae. Immediately the diarrhea returned. The 2-yr-old had bloody stools, the Pom just loose. Withheld food again, burger and rice again. Gave each dog about 10 pieces of food last night as they were acting normal and stools normal. This morning, diarrhea and vomiting again. I am so disappointed by this as we have never had an issue with this product. Our poor boys are miserable. I will never give them this food again. So I bought a large bag of True sky duck flavour wanted no corn or additives. After I bought it I had an uneasy feeling about buying it and had not opened the bag up yet. For some reason today, I was looking up Canidae and started to read the reviews about dogs getting sick and now owned by Procter and gamble (I think) who are now making the pet food. So for the hell of it, I opened the new bag sure enough smaller kibble in comparison to the smaller bag I was currently using.
My bad feeling came back after reading the review from this website and I returned the food to the store where I purchased it and got a full refund. From now on my little man will only get from our vet that is fully test and a high quality of food. I want to thank all the people who posted, you might have saved my puppy from getting sick or possibly worse and I hope your best friends are all doing fine as well. For the makers of Canidae two occurrences in two years how could you, these animals are not just animals, they are members of our family!!! If your company had truly cared about what you produced, this would not have happened a second time!!!!

I have been feeding my dogs Canidae for years. I always thought of it as a premium food and when other companies were recalling food I was confident that Canidae was safe. About a month ago I bought a new bag of Canidae. It was the grain free salmon formula. Neither of my dogs would eat it. I went back and bought the usual all stages food instead. They started to behave strangely around the food. The younger seemed anxious around meals. She would no longer eat in the same room as the other dog and ate very slowly. Around the same time they both started having diarrhea.
About a week later the older dog stopped eating entirely. She was very lethargic and wouldn't get out of her bed. I took her to the emergency vet and they gave her some I.D. Prescription food and she ate it! I was elated, but the other dog continued to act strangely. I never thought it was the Canidae. About a week later when I transitioned the older dog back to the Canidae she stopped eating again. That's when the penny dropped and I figured out it was the food. I'm so appalled and horrified that I could have inadvertently made my dogs sick! I've been telling everyone I know about this and I'm taking them back to the vet for a follow up appointment and I'll make sure that they're aware of this horrible situation.

I switched my cats over to Canidae Life Stages Duck about 3 months ago. I purchased 1 bag on 3/19/2014 and another on 4/23/2014. The first bag was mixed with their regular food for a slow transition which took a month. The second bag I was feeding straight no mixing. I started noticing my cats were STARVING all the time and drinking water like crazy. Its been a warm spring so I thought it was weather related. But then I woke up one morning and one of my 3yr old semi-feral cats was meowing like he was in pain and actually let me approach him and pick him up. I took him to the emergency vet and he had a urinary blockage caused by Struvite crystals.
The vet felt it was diet related since I switched to a new food 3 months ago. My cat spent a week in the hospital. The following day his brother who is 100% feral was displaying the same behavior so I had to net him and take him to the vet as well. He had a urinary infection with blood in his urine. I started to watch my other cats very carefully and noticed all of my cats were showing strange litter box behavior. I happened to take my 9yr old cat in to get shaved for the summer 2 days later and had the vet run a blood test. His kidney levels were high, his last blood test was 9 months ago he was in perfect health with normal kidney levels.
Again the vet suspected diet when so many of my cats were showing up with related issues. I switch back to First Mate Blueberry and Cranberry right after my cat had the blockage and now a week later my cats are feeling better. Not eating as much and drinking less water and are improving with their health and urination. Needless to say, I will never use this brand or any other brand owned by this company nor will I recommend it. My vet has also added it to her do not use list for clients. Honestly I thought it would be a good brand, made in America so safe from the Chinese products and had probiotics and other good stuff. Wish I would have read the reviews before I purchased it.

We have two Newfies, both ~126 lbs. We've been feeding our dogs Canidae Life Stages since we got the breed 8 yrs ago; the only pause in using Canidae was when they had their last recall in 2012, at which time we'd had no problems ourselves despite the recall. In January '14, I noticed the dogs having loose stools, and assumed it was something else they'd gotten into. We went through all the standard protocols of removing EVERYthing else from their diet: treats, supplements, you name it. The diarrhea persisted. Often the stool is just that jelly consistency; even things that normally would cause constipation, i.e., cheese, wouldn't help.
We're switching, just not sure which way to turn now. Canidae has earned our trust over the years. That Procter & Gamble have bought Canidae is disconcerting. Their history with other brands is that they drove the quality of those brands down. Clearly they've mucked around with the time-tested formula for Canidae, most likely outsourcing, and likely buying meat from China, where you know they don't have anything close to the standards we have here. Thanks for the good run, Canidae. I'm sorry the suits had to snatch you up and destroy what you were...

OMG I can't believe what I'm reading. Canidae has been our dog food for the past five years, we raised our first Rottweiler (Cait) her whole life, however she did get bone cancer at an early age 4 and we had her put down after going through amputation and the 3 months of hell that followed the surgery.
Our new Rottweiler puppy (Kona) just turned 3 months old and we have started her on Canidae Life Stages Duck Meal, Brown Rice & Lentils Formula for Large Breed Puppies, purchased April 18, 2014. We were feeding her Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula for large breed puppies. Vet recommended a slow change over, so we ended up mixing both foods together, first 80/20 Blue/Can, a week later, 50/50 this is where things started to change.
Kona started having diarrhea and pooping in 3 or 4 piles, drinking a lot of water more than normal. We thought it was due to the heat we've been having. Last time, the mix was 20/80 Blue/Can and lately her stools are like thick soup and in 4 to 5 piles. We thought it was the Blue Buffalo, but after reading some of the reviews on this site, we are leaning more towards the crap that Canidae is now putting out. STOP CANIDAE NOW! But not to throw her system into a trauma we switched the mix to 90/10 Blue/Canidae for two more feedings, then we will stop the Canidae for good. Last photo is Cait... RIP!

I have a St. Bernard. The vet recommended Canidae. I only fed my dog Canidae for 7 years. He thrived on it and it was the only food he liked. I recently purchased in April 2014 a 44 lb bag of Canidae All Stages dog food. He developed severe explosive diarrhea. I discontinued the bag and purchased Canidae Lamb formula from another store. The diarrhea disappeared after a few days. My dog finished the Lamb formula and the diarrhea was resolved. I then fed him from the 44 lb bag again. My dog immediately developed explosive diarrhea again. I am quite certain that he is getting diarrhea from the 44 lb. bag contents. He is feeling very poorly now. I will not feed him food from the 44 lb. bag again. I will contact Canidae soon. I am very disappointed that I have had this experience with a dog food I really trusted.

My dog is a 3-year-old Boxer. It took us a long time to find a quality dog food that did not cause him issues of diarrhea, etc. as a pup. Canidae All Stages was great for him for the last few years until this recent bag. I noticed the kibbles are much smaller than previously. My dog has been throwing up the food or lots of liquid soon after eating it. This has occurred a majority of his last several meals. I thought maybe I had one bad bag although after reading the reviews below I realize it isn't just the one bag. I also just discovered that Canidae was recently purchased by Procter and Gamble (Same company that owns Iams). Perhaps they changed the formula. Lastly, I read a review below that mentioned their dog having dry patches of skin since the change in food and I realize that has also occurred with my dog. I thought it was possibly due to the change in weather. Needless to say, I will be switching brands.

BOTH DOGS GOT EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA. Also severe itching. Contacted CANIDAE and they were very nice and took the code no. and felt it was not their food. They are sending me a coupon for another bag. I really don't think I will feed it anymore. Not sure YET. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED ME LIKE 1,000 DOLLAR BILL AT VETS FOR TESTS ETC. Vet feels it's dog food. The feed stores feel it's dog food.
They must have changed something maybe in food or added something or over added something. I had awful mess in house from this, had to clean house 3 times and walls etc from feces that exploded out my dogs' butts. Now itching from it. I am switching to another food and see if it clears up in 5 days. If so we will know for uncertain FACT that it's CANIDAE ALS dog food. Sad isn't it? Over 5 days of changing to her new food, she began to have loose stools the more I fed her Canidae. Took her to the vet. They ran tests for Parvo, worms, coccidia, and levels of good and bad bacteria. Her bacteria was off so she got antibiotics for that. The vet found nothing else that could cause this. I had to start her on Rice and boiled chicken... and still fed her the Canidae... 6 days later she still has loose stools. Today I switched her dog food to Wellness. From reading reviews, others have had similar experiences with this brand... We will see if her stools firm up from eliminating Canidae!

We have two small dogs (one Coton and one Havenese). They have been on Canidae Lamb and rice for over a year with no problems. In December 2013, we changed to Canidae All Life Stages. Within two weeks both dogs were suffering from severe diarrhea and they were vomiting and lethargic. The Coton experienced three seizures in a 15 hour period. The only change in the dogs' normal routine was the change in food. We rushed her to the Vet after the first seizure where she was examined but no conclusive cause was diagnosed. That night she experienced two more seizures; we took her back to the vet where blood work was run, with negative results. The vet changed her food and put her on antibiotics and Hill Science Diet prescription food, as well as Phenobarbital to stop the seizures.
The diarrhea, which had been severe for 5 days, stopped immediately after stopping the Canidae and beginning the Science Diet food. We are slowly working her off of the Phenobarbital at this time. So far the seizures have not returned. At this time the vet feels that given the timing of the onset of the illness and the recovery after the diet change, the most probable cause was the food. We did contact Canidae and spoke to their vet but they denied any responsibility.

We took her into the vet and her empty stomach was swollen and her intestines were full and weren't moving. They ended up having to open her up and take biopsies of her swollen lymph nodes and discolored intestines. They tested for cancer and it was negative. They are currently testing for parasites but it doesn't look likely. My vet believes it is because of the food. She is going to have to go on a prescription diet for 8 weeks at $100 a bag. My parents' male Chihuahua has been refusing his food and they are taking their new bag of Canidae back as I type. When we returned the bag to the retailer with about a dozen live bugs as proof the clerk casually said "Oh yeah, we seen these. Well just put the entire shipment that came with this bag back on a pallet and the truck will pick it up." He assured us that another bag that came in on a different load would be bug free. We carefully poured this bag into the 5 gal bucket and looked as best we could for the black bugs. None were seen.
After a week of transferring the food from the 5 gal bucket - that we washed after the first incident - into the smaller container for daily use, there they were again! We do not know if these bugs are hatching from inside the pellets or if we just missed seeing them when we poured out the bag. We are returning 4/5ths of this most recent bag and NEVER buying Canidae products again. If anyone knows what this insect is please contact us. Our dogs are a part of our family and it really hurts to know this company let down a lot dogs and their owners. I hope this is all over and this should never happen again.

The company changed the bag and said they didn't change the formula but our dog (who has eaten that dog food for 10 years) became very allergic, very itchy, threw up and had diarrhea. Have been emailing but we have stopped feeding the new dog food. Unbelievable that a company that prides itself on quality dog food (which I am willing to pay for) does not warn loyal customers that the formula is changing and does not answer emails or phone calls. VERY DISAPPOINTING... Will be looking for a new quality dog food.

Wow! I am so happy to be able to find this information on this. I have a 9-year-old American Pit Bull. He is my everything. My best friend no doubt. When I brought him home nine years ago, the breeder sent him home with Canidae Dry All Stages food. Recently my dog just wasn't the same. He would just walk by his dish and put his head down. Well, I assumed he was getting older and just was bored of the same ol' food every day for 9 years. Well that was not the case. After just buying "The Big Bag", my friend, my protector, just wasn't the same ol' guy. As his head lay low with sadness, his loss of weight, diarrhea, and vomiting, I just knew something was not right!
I racked my brain with sleepless nights trying to figure out what he maybe got into or trying to figure out how we were going to be able to afford the vet. As my friend, I would do anything for him as he would for me. So we were making an appointment for him but he was to be seen in 2 days. Well my buddy had to eat. In the meantime, I asked the vet what I could do in the meantime for his ailments. They suggested rice, boiled chicken with no fat shredded plain, or rice, ground beef rinsed, plain with rice, with a little canned pumpkin, no pie filling, just plain pumpkin. So we stopped the Canidae, and gave him these home-cooked meals. He ate so well like he was waiting for this. I had seen him pick his head up and he wagged his tail. He let me know that he was thankful. His spirit was alive.
The awful diarrhea and vomiting was gone by the time it was ready for his appointment. So I was curious about this so-called dog food and Googled Canadae. Oh my gosh, my mouth hit the ground! I couldn't believe it! So many dogs and people were going through the same thing as us. We were not alone. Immediately, I mean immediately, I got that poison out of my house. I'm so shocked these people who make and sell this poison are still able to do so. Our dogs, are our family and they mean the world to us. They can't talk to us but they try to let us know in some kind of way. Our li'l sign was, he walked by the bag and he nudged it with his nose. That was my clue about that crap they sell for our animals.
I'm happy to say my good ol' friend has never looked better after getting off that horrible dog food. He never had a problem with it in the 9 years, so I'm curious, "What the heck happened?" Different recipe, dirty conditions, new ownership, or just heartless, or money-hungry jerks who knew there was some kind of issue but turned a blind eye to fatten their pockets instead of taking in consideration. These are our family members and we love them. Canidae should be prosecuted to the fullest. Feed the company's bigwigs this stuff, not our dogs. Ashamed, they should be ashamed of the pain and suffering we had to go through. No animal should ever go through this. Please let's spread the word of this product and what it has done to so many people and dogs. Stand up for animals. They depend on us.

I adopted a 7-9 year old (His age was approximated by the animal shelter) dog after seeing a picture of him on a message board while walking out of a local, high end, "Cooperative" style grocery store in my city called the Boise Co-Op. The flyer showed several pets in need of immediate adoption and I went directly to the shelter where I adopted "Beedoo" within 20 minutes. We had an instant connection.
After doing my research I learned that for his age, breed type, and my own personal reasons for eating natural, healthy, whole, minimally processed type foods that Canidae would be the right product for him. My veterinarian commended a Lamb & Rice Meal type dog food and to look at the first line of ingredients no matter which brand of food we decided to proceed with. I chose the All Stages Lamb & Rice Meal and was very impressed by Canidae's ingredients and their commitment toward delivering a quality product through smaller (and in my case local) retailers.
After 5 years now, my dog is estimated to be 12-14 years old. He is very active. His coat, skin, and teeth are all healthy and in great shape. He has maintained a consistent weight for the entire last 5 years. He is not too thin, nor too thick. He sleeps well, and eats his food as scheduled. He does not have any issues with loose stool or vomiting as many other people indicate in their reviews. We have had no negative experiences with Canidae brand dog food, and furthermore, I recommend this brand to pet owners.
I find that people who take the time to write huge paragraphs bashing a product that didn't work for them, may not be the best source to seek regarding referral or recommendations. Being pet owners we know that these are complex beings and many factors can play into an animal’s reaction to a change in diet (or new foods). These include genetics, the overall health of the animal, allergies, the amount of food given, any table scraps or additional "human" foods given to the animal in conjunction with their regular food. To blame these reactions on the brand is simply uneducated, illogical, and lacking in good judgment. If your animal doesn't agree with the product please remember you chose to feed them that particular product, and you should take the animal to the veterinarian to test them for allergens or to find out if they have any other food sensitivities. That is your responsibility as a pet owner.
Again, I highly recommend Canidae Brand dog food. It may cost a little extra however for me personally, I don't put a price on the happiness and health of my animals, or my family. Perhaps those unhappy with the price and availability of this product should seek something they can afford, or more easily access at a low budget retailer such as Walmart. I'm sure there are many lower cost foods available to those of you that are not able to provide higher quality nutrition and care for your animals, at those big box retailers (I morally object to shopping at Walmart and big box retailers and haven't patronized them in years). Canidae is honestly the best dog food I have ever come across in many years of pet ownership. I highly recommend it to every pet owner I meet.

I've had Golden Retrievers for almost 30 years and have always used Pedigree or Purina. In August 2013, I decided to change to Canidae Life Stages Chicken and Rice. I switched from one food to the other over a 2-week period. I thought this would be a good change as it is for all "Life Stages" and one of my Goldens is an 11-month-old. Once my dogs were all switched over, life became hell! Only one of my dogs is doing well on this food. The pup and 12-year-old both have watery diarrhea daily. They have been to the vet, where they could not find anything wrong with the dogs, told to use yogurt, anti-diarrhea medicine, and FortiFlora for upset stomachs. My 11-month-old has lost weight and and looks horrible. I used their "Lamb and Rice" with no problems, but the sales person was good and told me of a wonderful sale they were having. Now here I sit with 6 30-lb. bags of this crappy food. And, there really was no savings as I had vet bills that ate up more than what I saved. Canidae... not being used anymore at my house!!!!

My boyfriend and I bought a Great Dane Puppy about a month ago now and have tried to figure out the best food for him ever since. We had him on another food to begin with and thought it was too rich for a growing Dane so we switched him to Canidae Large Breed Puppy food. Before we even switched him to Canidae, we were concerned about his stools because they were loose. We figured having him on a "high quality" diet would be better for him and firm up his stool. It didn't. A short time after starting him on the Canidae, he started to have explosive, watery diarrhea. In addition to this, he was throwing up the food along with some froth.
We immediately took him to the emergency vet (it was 11:00 at night on a Sunday). $270.00 later, the vet was able to tell us that his fecal came back normal but that he had a high amount of white blood cells. He ruled that our pup had some kind of GI infection. So, he gave us some antibiotics and an anti-diarrheal medicine and sent us on our way. His stool seemed to firm up but I'm assuming that is from the medicine he gave us. At this point, we didn't even think about the food being the problem. We live by a lake and assumed he had gotten something from the lake water.
So, we finished all his medicine as directed and everything seemed to get better. His stool really never got "normal". We took him to the vet the other day and our vet informed us that our pup has less than half of the red blood cells he is supposed to! He did a fecal, which came back negative again. He ruled that our pup has some kind of soft tissue infection. Once again, he is now on medication, and both my boyfriend and I are baffled that he keeps getting these infections. We take great care of him and he is truly a happy puppy.
After reading about the Canidae brand I am not so sure about it anymore. It just seems too coincidental to me that there are so many comments about GI infections in relation to Canidae. Our pup's stool is still loose, sloppy, and very difficult to clean up. It also makes it harder for our pup to hold it which I am sure is extremely uncomfortable. So, my boyfriend and I have decided to change our pup's food in the hopes of finally solving our dilemma and improving our pup's health.

I tried to explain it away by something else he'd eaten (several slices of whole wheat bread) or that he needed a period of adjustment, but over the course of a week it has not resolved. Smelly gas, loose stools that are too sloppy to pick up, and then this morning he developed bloody diarrhea. I'm taking the bag back to the store today and switching away from Canidae entirely.

In response to the retailer. I was feeding my Giant Schnauzer Evo red meat thinking I was feeding him the best. for over three years; before that Canidae. Canidae was bought by P&G. The last big recall that I found out about because they had no more on the shelf, I switched him to Fromm's. Within 24 hours he was a different dog. He loves to eat and he does not have a touchy stomach. These companies know that they have trace amounts of salmonella and god knows what else in them. P&G and General Foods are not interested in my dog's health. They want the big profit that pet Lovers bring to the market place. It's not because the dogs are allergic to the ingredients; it's because there is crap in the food. Well, we tried slowly incorporating this food in for 1 week. I noticed a change in our dog's behavior immediately and after a cup of the dog food, he had extreme bloating of his stomach and peanut butter diarrhea. I took him off and am going back to the store where my BF got this food to return it or let them know it's not good. ALSO, I just looked up Canidae and found out last year they recalled the dry food in all flavors in addition to the fact that in the past year or 2, there has been new ownership of the company by a larger one. Back in December of 2011, I thought it would be a good idea to change the food of both my English bulldogs. They were eating Blue Buffalo Lamb and they loved it. My husband and I wanted something comparable in quality but lower in price, and that's when we stumbled upon Canidae dog food. Six weeks in, I came home from work one afternoon and found that my youngest bully had yellow substance in her cage. I didn't think much about it. That was on a Tues. Friday afternoon, my husband saw our oldest bully go into a seizure and throw up the same yellow substance. We called our vet and of course they said, “Just watch him. If it happens again, bring him in.”
Sure enough, less than a week later, we both were home and he went into another seizure and started drooling. His body went rigid and he fell to the ground throwing up the yellow substance. We immediately took him to the vet and had a full blood workup done. The next day, they called. His labs were great, but of course they said he was developing epilepsy. So I came to this website and did some reading and saw all the horrible things about Canidae dog food. So I shared this site with my husband and immediately we both decided that maybe it was the food. The last thing we wanted to do was put him on medication if it wasn't necessary. So we changed both our dogs back to Blue Buffalo. I am happy to report that it’s been 3 weeks since all this happened and no seizures to report. My husband and I have to think it was the food. Thanks to all the reviews - they definitely opened our eyes and made us see something else rather than medication for my dogs.

I had been feeding homemade dog food with Canidae on the side for 2 years. The time of the recall, I could not get the food but waited 2 weeks and both my dogs were back on it. Both dogs developed horrible gas and diarrhea. My Golden Retriever especially had horrible yellow mucus and diarrhea stools. I did not even think that it was the Canidae. I had her to 2 different vets, who treated her for worms (even though they said they were not present). One vet recommended Metrodronizole, which I did not do. Test after test and nothing would show up, but my dog was continuing diarrhea month after month. I changed the homemade food over and over, but never changed the Canidae, and never suspected it. I kept changing the homemade to lamb/rice, chicken/rice etc., cut out all treats. Tests and more tests and now answers 5 months later.
One day last week, I Googled Canidae. I was shocked and appalled to see thousands of complaints of sick pets, all with the same symptoms as my dog and the same story. Vet bill after vet bill, test after test, only to find out it was the Canidae! I quit the food and my dog's stool cleared about 80%. She has lost weight and is urinating too frequently and drinking a lot. I have to take her in for more tests. Without a doubt, the Candidae has made both of my dogs ill. I believe my Shepherd will continue to improve, now off the Canidae. But my beloved Golden is not coming out of this. So more tests and praying to God that she does not have permanent damage. She is now on hamburger and pasta only. Anything else at this stage goes right through her.
I called Canidae. What a joke. They were not interested in my sick dogs at all. They said I could get a refund for the leftover food from my vet. Well, $20 in credit on my vet bill will be the tip of the iceberg. The worst is I feel so guilty and bad for not recognizing this was what was slowly killing my dog earlier. I fear I am too late now and that Canidae could care less about my dog or any other. They should be shut down!

I stumbled across Canidae, which is rated about the same as Blue Buffalo (the salmon wildlife blue is six stars). I was pleasantly surprised to see that the first three ingredients were meat and that I understood what the ingredients were. I also like the fact that they do not sell to large chain suppliers and are supporting local mom and pop stores. I emailed Canidae's customer service expressing concern and asking questions about the recall of Diamond Food when it first started a few weeks ago. (I had been told previously that Diamond makes Canidae.) I heard nothing from them so after a few days, I decided to call. What I was told shocked me. I asked about the food being recalled and I was told that it hadn't been (that was before the recall was expanded). The rude woman in customer service went on to tell me that salmonella is not a problem in dogs, more so in humans who touch the food. I asked her to repeat it and she did, at which time I told her that I had never heard of such a thing.
I later called Diamond and they were very kind. The person that I spoke to said that I needed to contact Canidae directly to see if the food was recalled. But that if I had any concerns, I should definitely return the food as salmonella can make dogs very ill. I also called 2 different vets who said the same thing.
A few days later, I called back to Canidae to see if the recall had been expanded to include their food. Again, I was put in touch with the same rude woman. I asked to talk to her boss and she refused to let me talk with anyone else saying that she was the manager/supervisor. I proceeded to tell her that I spoke with someone from Diamond and the vet and they said that salmonella in dogs can be very dangerous. Again, she insisted that it is more of a concern in people and usually doesn't affect dogs. We 'fought' over this issue for a few minutes, at which time she basically said to me to take the food back if I had concerns. I asked her again if there had been any recalls of Canidae and she assured me that all food was thoroughly tested and was not being recalled. The next day I received an email from a friend listing that Canidae was now being recalled. I honestly can't believe that she had no idea that the recall was going to be made public a few short hours later.
I am so glad that my dog did not get sick because of this last outbreak of salmonella in the dog food. I had chosen to feed my dog Canidae because I thought it was the best thing out there, but no more. Their customer service is horrible and I was flat out lied to by a rude woman who had no idea what she was talking about. Her lies to me make it perfectly clear that they don't care about their clients at all. I have talked to several other friends who have purchased Canidae and we all agree that we can't trust a product where the manufacturer flat out lies to you. Canidae underestimates the intelligence of the public and a campaign should be started to boycott their food. The Evo products are better as are the Wellness non-grain products. I personally have steered many to this information regarding Canidae and they have dropped the product. They make a sub-ferior product and should be held accountable. Don't forget to feed your animals REAL FOOD as well. This is what they were meant to eat before the petfood industry got consumers wrapped around their little fingers (kind of like the baby food industry). The only way this will change is if consumers stop buying into their sales pitches that are designed to make money.

He's had problems from day one of the switch but now his problems, which thank God I finally traced back to their REALLY bad food, is so bad that he's lost about 20 lbs and is close to death's door with a damn GI track infection/disease that he didn't have prior to the switch. And now my little Lhasa Apso, who is only two and has been the picture of heath, has a Hot Spot!

I started giving my 8 week old English Mastiff puppy the Canidae Beef and Ocean Fish All Life Stages food. Within 2 days, Milo was vomiting and had diarrhea. He vomited every time he ate. Within 2 hours, he became lethargic and sleepy. I stopped the food and started giving him chicken and rice to settle his tummy. On the 4th day, he was not getting any better. We took him to the vet.
We gave the vet all the info, I told him what kind of food we had been feeding him and his schedule. After running test after test trying to figure out what was wrong, his blood work came back and he had a severe infection of his bowels and GI tract. The vet says that the food caused him to become so sick (think poisoning) that his immune system was severely compromised. Because of this, he developed a secondary infection in his bowels and GI tract. The vet told us that it was good that we got him in when we did. Had we not brought him in so soon, the infection would have caused organ failure, in an otherwise perfectly healthy 8 week old puppy. Only 5 days on this food and he almost died. Needless to say, this has been an extremely stressful and costly turn of events. It didn't really dawn on me that his gastrointestinal issues could have been magnified by the premium food that he's been eating. He finally stopped eating altogether last weekend. I took him in again for a fecal test, last night, thinking that it might be yet another bacterial infection. The fecal was negative and our vet suggested that this all might be because of food allergies.
Keep in mind that this is the dog that could eat virtually anything without getting sick, mere months ago. So last night, I sat down at the computer to do some research and I came across this site. Thank goodness I did. I promptly went back to our local pet food store to purchase a limited ingredient Natural Balance food. He gobbled it up. After reading the complaints, I realize that Canidae Platinum Canned and Dry for my 4 older dogs and Chicken and Rice Formula, canned and dry, for my 2 younger dogs, must be the cause. I am with my dogs 24 hours a day and they never eat anything without me knowing it. They have a fenced in yard and I am always out there when they are.
I have been feeding my dogs Canidae for years and never had a problem. Today, I will throw out two just opened 30 lb. bags and try to return one unopened 30 lb. bag to where I got it. As a senior citizen on a fixed income, this really hurts. But my dogs are my life and I will not compromise their health. I wish I had checked on Canidae months ago! They have lost a very good customer who was buying 60 lbs. a month. Hopefully, once I change my dogs’ food, there will be no physical damages.

I had put my 199 lb Mastiff/Dane on this product. After three years of dealing with horrendous skin issues, he cleared up, for three years anyway. Then, last year, he started breaking out again. We, along with our vet, could not figure it out. I was finally told by our local pet supply store, that Canidae changed their formula. I emailed the company and in return received a very snide email. I was shocked. We have started him on other food. He has cleared up completely. I rescue dogs, foster dogs and attend a lot of adoption events. I used to be told I should be a spokesman for the company. That is how much I sang their praises! Now, it is the opposite! I let them know what happened to Bobo and I let them know how I was treated! Customer service doesn't exist any more!

I am so glad I found this site. I recently changed my dry catfood to Felidae and recently my 4-year-old cat is demonstrating behavioral issues. He's been agitated with his tail, biting and chasing it, looks like he's watching ghosts, and just not his normal self. I removed his Felidae this morning and hopefully I will get my happy cat back again!

We had our Bulldog on grain free Canidae food because it had been highly recommended. I noticed that our dog's stool was often quite runny but because of the reportedly high quality of the food I did not think that it could be the culprit. After reading some of the complaints on this site about Canidae, I decided to try something else. Research indicated that Taste of the Wild was good and it was locally available. After 2 days of weaning him off Canidae with a half and half mixture, the change in his stool is remarkable and I am about to eliminate the Canidae completely. I am amazed!

We recently switched to Felidae dry cat food. We have 3 cats, 2 of them had problems including yellow bile vomit and diarrhea/lethargy. I could not find contact info on the Canidae site. When I did finally contact them, they stated the only problems were those in mid-2008. Customers who used the old formula and then used the new formula. She also stated that the information you read on the internet is not all true. They claim that Canidae directly contacted many people and they retracted their stories. Also, that many people posted lies about this food. This CS rep did not ease my worries about this food. If anything, they made me feel worse about it.

Merlin (3) looked real ill on Thursday, 12/4, did not eat, drink or move so off to the vet we went on Friday. The vet found that he had a slight fever but really there was nothing wrong with him. She gave him antibiotics for a possible infection and 900 cc Lactated Ringer's subcutaneously to avoid dehydration and recommended chicken and rice. He had lost 4 pounds since his last check-up in July. On Saturday, Merlin was fine, but did not want to eat his food.
The rest of the gang were seemingly okay; but this Friday Jackie O (14 month) came in the kitchen walking in circles, her back arched and unable to lift her head. It looked a lot as if she may have had a seizure, then Sadie (ESS 16) fell over unable to get back up. The puppy, Charlie (BC 4 month) only wanted to lay around, as did Daisy (ESS 3). Both are working dogs, high energy and never lethargic. None wanted to eat, but luckily all did drink something. Then Jackie got diarrhea and vomited. The others followed one by one.
It was now Saturday early morning, we were on the ranch and a million miles from the nearest open vet clinic. Lucky for us, we have a vet tech living on the ranch who takes care of the other animals and when Jeff came home, he looked at the sick gang. He said that they had had several dogs with the same symptoms at the clinic all due to something they ate. The immediate solution was to give them all chicken broth and later a bit of rice and chicken. If it did not get better by afternoon, he would open the clinic and administer Lactated Ringer's. They all got better and by Sunday afternoon, everybody was pretty much back to normal.
Looking back, I should have wondered why their bowls were never empty; apparently, they knew something was wrong with the food. My gang was on Canidae for the last three years with no apparent ill effects. The two 40-lb. bags we had went in the trash and we are looking for something new, but for the time being, the gang gets only chicken, vegetables and rice.

We have been feeding our English Bulldogs Canidae Senior for years. Right after Thanksgiving, Mollie, our white Bullie, began vomiting clear gooey fluid. We thought she just had an upset tummy. We gave her a little Pepto Bismol that seemed to help her through the night. The next day the vomiting had worsened! Now, it was a yellow bile color but still just little puddles about two inches in diameter. I was recently laid off from my job, so there was not much money in my household right now. So we were really hoping that it would pass. We still felt and hoped that she just had an upset stomach.
After the third day with no improvement, we managed to find a vet that would work with people with little or no income. Our regular vet would not even think about seeing a dog without payment in full. There's just something wrong about that too! A loyal paying customer for years and you can't get a little help when you need it. Anyway we finally took her in to see the vet. She had a temp of 104. The vet gave her several shots of antibiotic and anti-vomiting medicine, then one for allergies. After promising $360, we finally took her home about 3:30 pm. She seemed weak but better.
Then at about 2:30 am, it all started again, except this time she was vomiting profusely with bile and chunks of undigested food in it. We sat up with her the rest of the early morning. At about 8 am, she looked better again, so we gave her some water just to see if she could keep it down. Two minutes later up it came, but this time it was a brown stool color. We got her to the vet at 10:30 when he opened. Now he says, he thinks it is Pancreatitis. He gave her some more meds and kept her to get some fluids in her.
As I write this, we are waiting to hear from the vet. My other Bullie is just fine though! I hope she does not come down with it. I am taking them off Canidae, I just hope it's not too late for Bella. I wonder did they reformulate the Canidae Older dog formula too? My girlfriend has missed two days work so far because she is too worried, upset and tired. That lost her Two days pay. We also paid out $100.00 for yesterday, God knows how much today is going to be!

Sasha is a 13-year-old golden retriever who had been in good health with a strong GI system - until the summer of 2008, around the same time Canidae changed its All Life Stages formula. She started having lots of gas and losing weight at that time, along with recurrent bouts of yellow diarrhea. She also significantly increased her water consumption and became a heavy panter. The panting even happened when she was lying around, not having gone for a walk. This was probably due to pain and discomfort. The introduction of the new Canidae unfortunately coincided with the closing of our small neighborhood pet supply shop. Had the shop remained open, we probably would have heard from the proprietress that others were having problems with the dog food. We definitely would have been given a heads-up about the formula change as she was diligent about keeping her customers informed. With the closing of the shop, we found other suppliers - none of whom offered this degree of concern and service for their customers.
We assumed Sasha was just getting old and she had been overweight, so getting down to a normal size seemed good, but the need for extra water was puzzling. Our veterinarian could not detect any issues with her health a year ago. Up until last week, she had been on Canidae All Life Stages dry food. We believe we gave it to her for a good three years. She almost died last week. On October 25th she became extremely ill, first vomiting food and then bile. Her stool was now pure yellow liquid. Her fever was 102.9 degrees, she had no appetite, and looked like she was in pain. Her weight was down 4 more pounds, significantly below what a normal weight would be for a dog her size. Her now unstoppable weight loss and degeneration was seriously concerning our veterinarian.
Our veterinarian bills last week were about $350. We considered euthanizing her as well. The x-rays revealed that her liver was in trouble and her anterior vena cava was abnormally narrow (though it is not clear whether the latter is connected to the other symptoms). We believed we were bringing her home from the hospital for a few days to say goodbye. The anti-nausea medication started working and she became extremely hungry. I then went online to search for Canidae problems, found several websites reporting dogs getting seriously ill, and realized she had possibly been poisoned by Canidae.
In the last year she also had recurrent yeast infections in her ears. We are vigilant about cleaning her ears, but were unable to prevent the infections. She has completely lost her hearing and we now believe that the way the food was impairing her immune system could have brought on the infections. Her whole system has been compromised; it’s more than the GI system that has suffered. We also suspect that her collapse, a year ago in September, was due to the food. She suddenly fell and couldn’t get up for hours. Afterwards she was no longer able to run properly. She still cannot alternate her hind legs while running and her attempts to run since then have been infrequent. The strength in her hind legs seems to have been permanently diminished since this incident.
We are trying to find out where to have the food tested as we suspect testing will reveal toxic substances. We are now home-cooking almost all of her food and she has come back to life. The stools are getting solid, the gas is totally gone, and her water consumption and panting have decreased. If only she could hear again and regain normal functioning of her hind legs.

Omg! I had no idea whatsoever that Canidae changed their formula way back when and it all makes sense now. I fed Canidae pretty much for the last 3 years of my 3 dogs', yellow Lab (10.5), Golden Retriever (14.5) and Rottweiler (11.5) lives. All three experienced diarrhea and became very lethargic. Like most, I chalked it off as being the heat. Unfortunately, they have all since passed. But it all makes sense now why my Golden and Rotty passed away unexpectedly. I have since gotten a new pup a Lhasapoo and I am really glad I have been hesitant to putting her on Canidae, something must have been speaking to me from within for it has been one year since my Rotty who I miss ever so much passed away.

I put my dog on Canidae Chicken and Rice in early 2007 and he did great until the formula change happened. I didn't put two and two together until I did some research on their product and found that other people were experiencing the same issues as I was. About the time the formula change happened, every 4 or 5 months, I would come home to a huge pile of yellowish mucousy diarrhea...it smelled horrible. There was one instance where there was blood in his stool and he was violently ill for about a week with a raging temperature - no explanation could be given by the vet.
About 2 months ago, my dog suffered the first seizure - to my knowledge. He collapsed on the floor, had problems trying to get up and then went into a full seizure episode. I took my dog to the vet. His blood work came back fine and they attributed it to his age (he is a 3-year-old male Golden Retriever and in my opinion, far too young to be having to deal with this issue) and stated it appeared he was developing epilepsy. Over the time the formula changed, I noticed Bailey would just "pick" at his food. He would never finish it.
After his first seizure, I switched his dog food thinking that may be the culprit after doing research on commercial dog food companies. I put him on "instinct" and he did fine. On Sunday, I switched him back to Canidae and by Tuesday, he had another accident in the house - large pile of yellow mucousy diarrhea. Yesterday, he was restless and my husband noticed he was staggering around the house acting like he was drunk for about 2 minutes or so. He had no leg coordination and was very wobbly.
After he had the first seizure, he needed to go to the bathroom. I noticed his stool was the thick, mucousy yellow pile I had been noticing over the last year. I am now figuring my dog may have had more seizures than I am aware of and they may have happened at the times he had this diarrhea incident. I have fed him Canidae Snap Biscuits, the wet and dry Chicken and the grain free blend. He has had the same reactions to all of it. He is now scratching a lot more than he used to. I am taking him to the vet today and getting him off this food asap before anything else happens. Canidae should be ashamed of themselves.

We fed our two dogs, a Rottweiler and a Chocolate Lab, Canidae All Life Stages for over 3 years. In the beginning they did great. My Lab’s ears cleared up; they had great coats and were healthy. Then in 2008, I poured a new bag of Canidae dog food into the food bin and noticed that it looked and smelled different, and not in a good way. I began to feed them the food, but slowly things started to change. Their bowels got loose; their hair turned dull and frizzy. My Lab's ears got yucky, and she was biting her nails. So I called the company and asked if they had changed formulas, and that's when I found out they did. I was upset that they hadn't made it a point to inform me better, and then denied that the negative changes I was seeing in my dogs could be from the dog food.
We had a trip planned so I figured I would deal with it when I got back. Sadly while we were on vacation, my Rottweiler suffered a spinal stroke. She is alive today, can walk, but has trouble, not to mention the thousands we spent in treating her. I also noticed when she was laying down for the 3 months, that she couldn't walk (we had to carry her out to the bathroom, and she's 125 lbs), and that she had developed a cyst on her side; something that wasn't there before. The doctors say they don't know what causes the spinal strokes, but I honestly believe Canidae's change in formula had to do with it. My dogs were healthy and looking great till they changed their food, and now my poor Rotty drags her foot around everywhere she goes and can no longer play with her best friend.
Consequences: coat changed to dull, frizzy, and thin; nails got thin from chewing. Ears got infected - cost of treating. Spinal stroke, inability to walk correctly, drags front foot, can no longer play, jump, go upstairs, has trouble sitting and getting up, not to mention the thousands spent on treating her.

At first I thought it was my cooking, but then I saw all the complaints here with the exact same symptoms on other dogs! I can't believe it. Canidae used to be a trustworthy company. What happened? Both dogs went through a series of tests just to find out that it was the food they were eating. My vet told me that Canidae may have changed the formula. I confirmed what my vet told me. I wish I would have known about this sooner. I would have taken them off the dog food months ago. My husband wanted to change our dog's food to something that is healthier. He did his research and found that Canidae was a good option. After three feedings, our Golden, Rocky, threw up (7 times) and then refused to eat (a huge red flag for him). I took him to the vet (at 3pm) who pumped him with fluids because he was dehydrated and gave him antibiotics and some anti-vomiting meds. He continued to go downhill throughout the day. At 10pm my husband took him to the ER. He was lethargic, drooling uncontrollably and seemed to have difficulty walking. We didn't expect him to make it through the night.
He spent 3 days in the doggy ICU ($1,400.00). Thank God he is alive today however; we didn't make the connection that the food made him sick. He ate chicken and rice for a while but as soon as we began to transition him to the Canidae, he started acting the same way he did before and he refused to eat it. Only then did we discover this website and all the complaints! Rocky is doing better but I worry that he will have long lasting health issues like some of the other dogs. I am sick to think this company is refusing to take responsibility even after people's beloved pets died from eating this. Consequences: emotional distress, considering my husband and I mourned the entire first night our Rocky was in the ER and over $1,400 in vet bills so far.

She is now 2 1/2 and has a perpetual ear infection and her anal gland problem is bringing us to the vet's office usually every 3 weeks instead of every two months like before. In July of 2009, she suddenly started having seizures. Our vet told us that dogs may develop epilepsy at her age and that it's perfectly normal. I accepted this answer, until yesterday.
Two days ago, I bought Canidae Treats for my dog and then another seizure. She has had two other seizures since the first one, once two weeks ago and one yesterday morning. My vet told us that if seizures become more common with her, a diet modification may be needed. After the seizure yesterday morning, I really started doing research on Canidae Dog food, and the more I read about it, the more I really believe it is the problem. People put too much stock in commercial dog food. What does everyone think people did before there was commercial dog food? Dogs were healthier and lived longer eating meat and vegetables. I have done it for over 15 years, easy as pie. Let's help put these horrible dog food companies out of business as the power is in the hands of the pet owner.

I recently stopped the enzymes for a couple of days and things went from bad to worse. She did not have this problem before eating the "new formula" Canidae, certainly not what I bargained for. Unbeknownst to its loyal customers, Canidae, once an honest company that provided a safe product, changed ownership and/or management within the last few years. One of those changes was to use a supplier by the name of Diamond which has possible ties to China. I suspect it is this supplier that has slowly poisoned your pets.
I have a bag of Canidae Beef and Ocean Fish Meal Formula, the remainder of which has just been sent to a lab for testing here in Seattle. My husband and I are in a unique position of knowing for an absolute fact that our dog has not ingested anything, except Canidae Kibble and Fresh and purified water since April 1, 2009. Our dog never has access to garbage and has been on nothing but closely monitored leash walks during which he has ingested no feces of any kind, garbage, or plant. When we are finished with play sessions at home with toys, balls, ropes, and such, they are put out of his reach.
This sounds austere and controlling; it's not. We have no children, and both of us work only blocks from our residence and consequently spend plenty of time interacting with our beloved two and a half-year-old lab/sharpei Playdough. Also, if you were to interview a vet, you'd find that cars, aggressive dogs left to roam, free, and random undigestible objects pay much more than half their salary each year.
Back to the reason for testing the kibble. Around June 18, 2009, our dog started having small amounts of blood in his stool and mucus-laden cowpies. After four days of this, I took a stool sample to be tested for parasites which came back negative. The problem persisted, and as I racked my brains for an explanation, I remembered a conversation I had had this past Thanksgiving with someone, who had done copious amounts of research on Canidae dog kibble as his dog became ill after consuming it. He was the one who had informed me about Canidae recently changing hands and insisted that his research shows Diamond having ties to China.
Our dog had best come out of this situation alive and well! I strongly urge Canidae to do the right thing: continue to make a healthful product if that is indeed what you're doing, or remove those substances which are causing so much suffering. If appealing to a higher conscience is moot, maybe self-preservation is your thing. It shouldn't cost much for some crazy who's lost faith in our legal system to hire a private investigator to find a private residence or two. I'm too well-adjusted for such behavior and being in the fact gathering phase, awaiting the facts.
If this post should reach a competent attorney, I will gladly put you in touch with a well-educated, well-regarded person who has spent hours researching Canidae; and if I find that this food had caused my pet his illness, I will gladly participate in a class action lawsuit. In the interim, I'm changing to Innova along with a product made by Eaglepack called Holistic Supplement for Dogs and Cats in an effort to restore his digestive health.

He said that he had never seen a urine sample with that much blood. In fact, it had blood clots in it. The vet had blood work and urinalysis done, which had to be taken via a needle to the bladder. The vet told me that by the lab analysis, it looks like he must have consumed something toxic that had created an acute attack on his kidneys. Luckily, the vet said that it looks like the kidneys are recovering and he should be fine. I started to look on the internet to try and find out what my dog could have consumed and I found this website. I got so upset that I threw the biscuit away immediately.
Now I wish I hadn't so they could be tested. I do have to say that my other dog also ate the biscuits and didn't seem to have any problems. I hope the company looks into this. I have been feeding Canidae Chicken and Rice Kibble (yellow bag) along with their treats for approximately 4-6 months. After purchasing the last bag (Mid-late July 2009), my dogs have become gravely ill. My 12-year-old lab mix had frequent urination, fatigue, and diarrhea. This became urgent two days ago when she had severe rectal bleeding (puddles and puddles of blood). I rushed her to the ER vet where she stayed overnight hooked up to IVs and antibiotics.
After, radiographs, tests, etc., we had no conclusion as to what caused this. She hasn't eaten anything other than Canidae and there is no possibility of her getting into anything. She is now on a specially prescribed diet from her primary vet. Treatment is ongoing and so far the bill has exceeded $1k. Since my older dog is on a special diet, I've been monitoring my younger dog closely, especially since she is still on Canidae Chicken and Rice. What do you know?! She has the same yellow runny diarrhea and frequent urination. Both of my dogs are getting off and staying away from Canidae from this point on. The rest of the food (which is a lot) is getting sent off for testing. I can't trust the safety of this brand at this point. It’s too risky. Oh, did I mention that since my other dog is on a different diet, she has made a dramatic recovery? It's the truth.
This ordeal (yes, ordeal) has been emotionally draining to both myself and my two dogs. We all know the state of the economy and for someone (esp., a college student) to shell out $1k on something that was 100% preventable is insane! I feel as though my older dog (who has been hospitalized for 2 days) will make a full recovery. But, someone needs to take responsibility! People love their pets and trust manufacturers! We take their word on the ingredients and quality of product. It's a shame that they can get away with this.

I have fed my dog Canidae for 5 years with no problems. Then, we bought a new bag of Canidae Lamb and Brown Rice Formula dry dog food on August 2, and he began feeding from it approximately 1 week later. About a week later, I began to notice an increase in water intake and frequency in urination. I kept an eye on him, but he displayed no further symptoms, so I attributed it to the warm temperatures. On August 19, I had planned to make a vet appointment due to his continuing frequent urination. That evening, he yelped in pain, lost feeling in his back legs, and lost bladder control. We rushed him to the vet that night.

Warning, do not buy this dog food especially for your puppy. We have gotten a purebred German shepherd who has been sick with blood in the stool and the yellow diarrhea with blood mucus. Twice he has been to the vets and has been treated with different medication only to not have it resolved. Today, I went to this website and could not believe what I read. Exactly the same thing that has been happening to my puppy has been happening to other dogs and they have died! How can a company give us food to give to our dogs who trust us and rely on us to take care of them and we are actually killing them! Consequences: Loss of weight, lethargic and constant blood in the stools and yellow diarrhea.

My dog is 3 years old, 96lbs and was being fed Canidae All Life Stages since he was a puppy. I noticed that he was scratching himself all the time. He didn't want to eat his food. When his hunger gets to him, he would eat it. I decided to watch him when I let him out in the yard on 7/31 and noticed he was throwing up yellow, frothy slime. His stool was yellow, but semi-formed. After going online to google his problems, I found out what was going on with Canidae and I'm shocked to see his food is the cause. As I was reading, I stopped, got up and dumped his full bowl of food in the garbage. I went and bought him Wellness Dog Food.
I am thankful for the internet because I think I caught this in time and he is now eating Wellness without any Canidae mixed in to transition him. I was too afraid to put any of that stuff in his new food. Now his new food doesn't sit in his bowl like Canidae did. He eats it right up! I had bought the largest size bag Canidae makes and the pet store would not give me my money back! My dog seems to be better now. It's only been 3 days since he's been eating Wellness and if I notice any more throwing up or other problems, off to the vet we'll go. Why doesn't the FDA do something? People like me had no clue it was the food! Other animals were not so lucky!

I was feeding my three cats Felidae cat food by Canidae and I bought the 8 pound bag. Usually, I buy a smaller bag, but the pet store was out of the smaller bag. Two of the cats refused to eat it to the point of starving themselves for three days, although when they were offered other people foods, they normally won't eat, they ate that no problem which told me they were starving. One of my cats ate the Felidae cat food sparingly and he started vomiting. After three days, I realized it probably was the food as it was a much darker color than it should have been. I had thrown the bag out and when I called the company, I got the old, "Well, not all batches are made exactly the same and maybe this is what the cats turned their nose up at." I said, "That doesn't make sense that two cats would starve themselves and then why is the other one vomiting?" I bought a small bag of it and it was the right color and the cats ate it and the other one stopped vomiting. I had to get more food and all the store had was the large bags again, so I purchased it. Same thing happened the first day although the color of the food was fine.
I have switched the cats to PC finicky cat food until I can find out what is going on. The first bag, I threw out the bag the food came in but I have a small sample of it and the second bag I still have. The first bag was purchased the beginning of July, but I didn't use it until close to the end of July. The second bag was bought the end of July and the store I purchased it from gave me the same schmoozing the company did, but they told me they reorder every week because it is such a good seller. They are Ryan's Quality Pet Foods at 400 Scott St. Grantham Plaza in St. Catharines, Ontario L2M 3W4, telephone/fax: 905-646-0508. The best before date is May 13, 2010, product number #3008 and it's the Cats and Kittens formula.
I am going to be sent two coupons for two small bags of Felidae cat food from the company. I haven't received them yet in the mail. The second bag of Felidae was a promo free one and I will not be bringing it back to the store except to give them the numbers off the bag and a small sample if they want. So actually, I'm out for both bags and the cat that was vomiting has a low grade fever. And I am watching for intestinal problems and urinating problems as my vet said it would be $62 just for the visit and then there would be blood work and who knows what else. I really can't afford this as I am on disability.
I lost a cat to urinary problems not too long ago. He was on Friskies and he was fine. I switched him to Felidae and within six months, he had a total urinary blockage and had to be put down. I didn't think it could be the cat food as the other two cats were fine. I wasn't ever going to get another cat and could barely bring myself to pet the other two remaining cats but this third cat I now have crawled into my heart because he needed a home. This is the one that was vomiting and if I lose him, it will devastate me and I will never have another cat. I'm terrified.

The vet thought they were poisoned. I went to my vet and had to go to ER and the border didn't make it. I am keeping vigil over my pit and hope it will go well. The vet said he didn't know what to do. I am so mad. The border was fine right before I fed her (9 pm) and dead by 4 pm next day. Do not trust this company! I purchased a 44# bag of Canidae All Stages Dog Food just last week, for a new puppy that I picked up on Monday, 7/6/09. The puppy breeder used Canidae, so being the responsible dog owner that I felt that I was, I got him some Canidae. I have other dogs and one "was" a show Yorkie named Taz - only 4 lbs. and only 2 years old on 7/7/09. It's hard to keep the new food away from the other dogs and, of course, they had to try it.
Now, that little 4 lb. Yorkie is not a gobbler. But just a couple of days or so after introducing the Canidae into my home, my little 4 lb. Yorkie started drooling then completely soaked all the hair on the front of him "twice." This started on Sunday, 7/12/09. I noticed that he's puking and can't even keep water down. His stool were 100% blood. I called the vet and she tells me to give him Pepto-Bismol and Pedialyte. I worked with him from 4:00 pm until almost 8:30 pm. He was alert but still sick and not peeing by my bedtime. I awoke at 4:30 am and his poor little body was warm - but he was semi stiff, still breathing, bloody stool everywhere, and eyes rolled back into his head.
I drove 90 mph to 24/7 Animal Hospital. They started him on TV, gave him dextrose, etc. His labs show that his pancreas was irritated from the food and threw out all sorts of enzymes that attacked all of his organs in his body. His blood was so thick from the dehydration that he likely had clots in every part of his body. About 2-3 hours after he was in the hospital, his heart eventually quit. CPR was initiated; I was called and updated. I decided to stop CPR because the doctor felt that he already had irreversible brain damage (from the puking and dehydration) which was even before the heart attack.

They refused to tell her in what way, or anything else. What's going on? My folks have hundreds of dollars in vet hospital bills from June. We weren't having problems with it and just bought a new bag, and now our dogs are getting sick. We're throwing it out and switching brands. I bought a "Whippet" dog for my husband for father's day in June of 2007. He was a wonderful pet, playful and most loved by my two kids. As the breeder suggested some quality dog foods to feed him, we settled on Canidae. He seemed to like it and be healthy. In June of 2008, we went back and my husband bought a sister, female Whippet for me. Now, we were very happy with our two dogs and they were brother and sister.
In May of 2009, our male dog had gotten sick. He would not eat, or drink so I took him to vet right away. To make a long story short, he passed within five days of becoming ill. He suffered from pancreatitis, we had no clue why. We were asked repeatedly if we changed his food or treats or if he got into something. Nothing that we knew of.
Today, I was trying to compare dog foods. My dog doesn't seem to want to eat much, and has been vomiting every once in a while. I think it might be the food. In my research, I came upon a Web site talking about the class action lawsuit against Canidae. After reading some of the statements, I feel that this company is the reason our beloved "Denver" is no longer with us. I would like this to be looked into and someone make the company tell the truth. It should be made public so no more family pets have to suffer, or even die.

We have been feeding Canidae dry and wet food to our six miniature Dachshunds for several years without any trouble until about six months ago. Then each of the dogs often had runny stools and was lethargic for several days at a time. Two of the dogs were affected more than the others and one of them had recurring bouts of the problems. Our vet tested feces and questioned us about feeding habits, etc., but could not point to anything definitively. We spent hundreds of dollars on vet bills and had standing orders for refills of antibiotics and anti-diarrhea pills, but nothing solved the problem.
The dog that suffered the worse finally would eat nothing but chicken strip treats and she had to be force fed her medicine. We discovered this website two days ago and we found out the problems reported here. We immediately stopped feeding Canidae and went with a quality dry and wet dog food, and we have been amazed at how well all six dogs have responded. They have all become much happier overnight and the loose stools are gone.
We read the letter from Canidae at the beginning of the page. They tell the various steps to go through if you want to continue feeding Canidae, but I have a much easier suggestion. If your pet has been on Canidae, and it seems off its feed or has loose stools or whatever, simply stop feeding Canidae at once and go to another brand. You will save money on vet bills and your pet will be much happier. We spent a small fortune on vet bills and our dogs were doing poorly. We took many time consuming preventive measures besides that just to eliminate any possible sources of contamination, but we did not realize that we were feeding the dogs the very thing that caused the problem.

A couple of the dogs did develop some gas, but once we decreased the food amount (we were overfeeding according to the feed guidelines on the bag), the problem stopped.
One of our dogs had to be changed to a grain-free food due to food allergies, but this would have happened regardless of the brand. I also know many of our adopters now feed Canidae with success, as well as our volunteers. So I don't know that across the board we can say that Canidae is a bad food. And let's face it, there are many problems out there with many pet foods - mostly because of poor regulation in the industry.

I have been feeding our 2 dogs Canidae for years, like 6 or 7 maybe more. They did great on it until this year. We usually buy 4-5 bags at a time as we live way out in the mountains of Colorado. So I did not find out about the change of formula until Mar ‘09 when we bought 4 more bags. Here is how I found out: my younger dog hesitated when I fed her, which never happens! I looked at the food that my husband had poured and knew immediately that something was different. I asked him if he got the right formula, he did. I had about 12 cups of the old formula and we could see the difference, so I knew we had do the transitioning (which all of us dogs owners know to do when feeding new/different food), which we did over a 2 week time period.
My 2 dogs still had a hard time, basically some vomiting, yellow, soft, slime-covered stool. I checked the Canidae website and confirmed they changed the formula. Everything they changed looked great. My dogs just don't do well on it anymore. It's been 3 months and the stool issue has not resolved, so I did some research and decided we are changing brands. I don't want to risk losing my dogs over this or making them anymore sick. I would have paid more for the old Canidae formula that's how good it was. I’m extremely disappointed. We will be returning the other 2.5 bags and the biscuits.

I have always fed my beagle, Ben, homemade food; a recipe given to me by a dog obedience school. It's a mixture of brown rice, ground beef, ground chicken or turkey, pinto beans, green beans and peas. I've supplemented this with fish oil, fruit (bananas, apples, tomatoes), and beef marrow bones. Ben has always been extremely healthy. He's almost 10 years old and has never had any illness or gastric problems. However, he did wear his teeth down chewing on the marrow bones so I decided to switch him to a mixture of home-cooked food plus high-quality dry food and stop feeding him the bones. I wanted something hard and crunchy to help keep clean his teeth.
Two and half weeks ago, I started him on Canidae lamb meal and rice formula dry food mixed with the home-cooked food. Last night, I discovered bright red bloody mucus in his stools. Today, I took him to the vet. The tests were inconclusive, but showed he was dehydrated, his gums were tacky and he had an elevated red blood cell count. Rather than put him on an IV overnight at the emergency animal hospital, I chose to let them hydrate him under the skin. He came home with a 7-day prescription for Metronidazole and a recommended diet of chicken and rice for the next week or so. While I have no proof that it was the Canidae that caused this, I hope that taking him off Canidae and putting him back on his natural, home-cooked diet will restore his 9 and a half year record good health.
Consequence: My vet bill today was just over $200.

At the end of December (2008), after several days of internet research, reading dog food labels, asking questions, etc, I decided to try Canidae dog food. I hugely regret this decision. I put two of my Bouviers, Crystal and Keeli, on the Canidae Original. I began gradually changing them over to it but when the mixture increased to 50/50, Keeli ended up with loose stools. After a while, thinking the multiple meats in the Original was upsetting her, maybe it was too rich, I decided to put Keeli and Crystal on the Canidae Chicken and Rice formula; that’s what they were used to, Chicken and Rice formula in a different brand of dog food.
They were on the Canidae Chicken and Rice formula for the month of January and Keeli had loose stools or diarrhea that whole time. She also had hot spots on her cheeks (first the right cheek then the left cheek) which I couldn’t get under control even with antibiotics. At one point in January, I even emailed the Canidae Company but got a couple of copy/paste responses with no interest in my individual concern. Their email responses showed a lack of concern, a seemingly blaming attitude (it must be that you transitioned too quickly). I actually felt insulted by their responses. They didn’t care about me or my dogs, such a lousy attitude.
A little bit about me. I grew up on a farm, raised and trained horses for several years. Then about 20 years ago, I bought my first show dog (a Bouvier) and ever since then I have raised, trained and shown Bouviers with over 40 champions to my credit. So I have a lot of experience with animals. In February (just a few weeks after I started feeding the Canidae), Keeli, our 5 year old dog, ended up sick. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Her blood work showed elevated lipase and the ultrasound verified pancreatitis. After a week at my vet's clinic, Keeli came home on Science Diet dog food (which I hate). Just when I am thinking Keeli is going to be okay and she was seemingly feeling better, Crystal, our 9-year old dog, refused to eat her breakfast.
Throughout this time, Crystal had acted lethargic and somewhat painful at times but her stool remained okay so we blamed it on her back problems. It didn’t occur to me that Crystal may have been sick too. But when she wouldn’t eat her breakfast, I took her into my vets. And sure enough, now Crystal has pancreatitis (that was April 24th). She spent 11 days at my vet clinic and improved somewhat but remained anemic. She came home to us on a Monday but by Wednesday, she was so weak she could hardly walk without stumbling. I was so upset. I took her back into my vet’s clinic. I am again sitting on the floor at my vet’s clinic with my dog in my arms crying, so many tears these past few months. They kept Crystal overnight.
I went back the next morning to visit her. They had to carry her into the room because she was too weak to walk on her own. Sitting on the floor, Crystal’s head on my lap, I looked up at my vet and in shock and with tears I said, “She’s worse than she was yesterday.” That was when I told my vet I wanted to take her to OVRS (a specialist vet clinic in the Detroit area). I got her there by afternoon but it was too late for Crystal. They couldn't help her. She died by the next morning. And less than a week after Crystal died, Keeli ends up with pancreatitis again.
Keeli, my sweetie, my love, so devoted to me, follows me around the house, full of happy energy, pancreatitis for the second time. Am I going to lose her too?! So far, this year, my vet bills are over $6,000. I am so heartbroken and of course blaming myself. I made a huge mistake changing over to Canidae. I lost Crystal and now does this mean that Keeli will have chronic pancreatitis and/or a shorter life span all because of feeding Canidae for six weeks? I wish I had known of all these problems before I fed Canidae.

A few months back, my dog began throwing up a lot. Eventually a few times a week. He would jump up from bed at night and was clearly uncomfortable. The gurgling sounds coming from his stomach were an indication that he was in pain and going to have an episode. After about a month of this, we went to the vet to test for parasites. The test was negative. I read online about the problem with Canidae, which he'd been eating for several months. I put him on another food, transitioning with boiled hamburger and rice. He threw up once more about a week later, but hasn't since (about two months ago). There's no question in my mind that it was the food and it was not about transitioning since he'd been eating it without a problem for quite a while after the recipe was changed.
My fear is that it took that long to cause the damage, which resulted in the symptoms. He seems fine now, but it's alarming to read about so many dogs who suffered permanent intestinal damage.

In May of 2007, my husband and I bought an eight week old female boerboel puppy from a reputable breeder. We started her out on Canidae All Life Stages dry chicken and rice formula kibble when we got her home. We fed her this food until spring of 2008 because she and our other dog, a border collie, consistently experienced diarrhea on a daily basis - yellow, mucous threaded diarrhea with frequent bouts of vomiting.
The older border collie was not affected as severely as our boerboel puppy. Our boerboel had terrible gas all the time. Then our boerboel girl developed ear infections and started to chew her feet all the time, developing sores on them. I treated her with Miconazole products, but the condition never cleared up. The vet eventually put her on antibiotics and Otomax for her ears, which gave her some relief for about a month. It was around this time that we decided there was something wrong with Canidae and switched to Innova.
The diarrhea cleared up in our border collie, but our boerboel was still experiencing intermittent colitis. She never quite recovered from whatever damage had occurred to her gastrointestinal system. March of 2009, she began to fail, losing weight, ear infections, raging skin infections and diarrhea and vomiting. Back and forth to the vet. Saturday, May 26, 2009, she vomited twice and had leg spasms. Then at 4:30 on Sunday morning, she began to howl in pain and passed copious amounts of blood from her bowel. By 8:00AM, she was hemorrhaging and had fallen unconscious. We rushed her to the vet, where she hemorrhaged to death. X-rays revealed a damaged stomach and intestinal tract. The vet opened her up and examined her bowel, discovering an approximately 12" length of ruptured, inflammatory, necrotic bowel.
Pathology report declared the absence of pathogens and bacteria. Our boerboel's bowel had somehow been damaged and she'd developed a progressive inflammatory disease of the bowel that eventually ruptured her intestinal track, killing her. She was beautiful, bred from champion lines and the love of our lives. She died three weeks short of her second birthday. I hold Canidae responsible for destroying our developing puppy's digestive system. I cannot even begin to describe our grief. We have all the receipts for the purchased Canidae from the time we brought our baby home to when we took her off the product. Nothing can bring her back, but Canidae needs to step up to the plate. If we'd raised our puppy on a different food, she would still be alive today. Canidae ruined her bowel. I can only hope and pray that our border collie does not eventually succumb to the same product induced disease.

I reduced the quantities and stuck with it for about 2 months and his stool eventually improved. My vet told me other people were having the same problem. He developed a reaction, itching all over and he scratched himself raw and bloody twice. I had him tested for mites but they found none. I supposed it was an allergy to chicken but there is no concrete proof so far. He got some redness around his penis and so on and on. I wrote to Canidae and their response did not satisfy. It went like this: Formula was changed. They told me to mix it 50/50 and gradually increase new formula or feed 100% new formula, in smaller portions more often. Also, they told me to prevent the dog from eating quickly, check with my vet to see if something is wrong with the dog and hey, if I was still not satisfied, they'll give me a refund.
That's a crap attitude. No big deal. Your dog started eating our stuff and suddenly starts having these problems? Maybe it's something on your end! Deceitful people! They never acknowledged a problem so they obviously don't care about my dog and their food. What really pissed me off was their vague, puerile, sanitized corporate response and I'm getting more worked up just writing this. It isn't pleasant to see your pet tearing up at himself. I thought we got a bad batch here in the Caribbean, but after seeing multitudes of similar complaints and putting it all together, I am finished with this. We have been loyal Canidae customers for the last 8 years and, sadly, since the switch of their dog food formula, our dogs were never quite the same. The stools, the coats and skins have all indicated to us that something in the food has changed for the worse. We have been reluctant to believe or blindly accept that this is all the cause of the formula change but the evidence is too great to ignore and has ultimately forced us to make a change. We are quite happy now with a new dog food and I'm glad to report that even with just over 10 days of feeding the new foods in place of Canidae, we'd already seen great improvements. The funny thing is that we used to recommend Canidae to all our friends with the troubles they had with their dog food.
One quick observation I'd like to mention in relation to this; my wife and I used to run a dog boarding facility a few years back at our home in Northern California and from time to time when the boarding dogs ran out of their foods, we were always happy and never hesitate to use Canidae as substitution and no dogs, I say again, "no dogs" that we introduced the food to had never had any kind of digestive problems.
We live in Central Texas now for the past 3 years and although we're no longer running the boarding home, we have been involved with retired racing Greyhounds and have off and on brought in foster dogs. Our experiences with the new Canidae were not quite the same as the old Canidae. Our last foster which we had for the past 3 months was never quite adjusted to the food and had problems with loose stools and diarrhea is quite routine. Our own 3 dogs (not all Greyhounds) were not the same with the new formula either. It pains me to have to end the relationship and make a switch. It feels almost like a divorce. I hope it's not too late for Canidae to bring back the old formula and hopefully when it does, maybe one day, I will consider going back to the brand but the issue of trust, at least for now, is broken.

I began feeding my dog Canidae "Snap bits" (original and platinum) about three months ago because I believed that they were safe to feed to my dog as a treat (I thoroughly researched the website and everything sounded great). The treats were only something extra as she eats Merrick dog food and has done so ever since the recall of a lot of the other foods out there. Shortly after I began feeding my dog the snap bits, she became lethargic, had loose stools, and just never wanted to walk or play much anymore. I found this to be strange since she is only 4 years old and loves to walk in the park and chase a frisbee on a daily basis usually. I thought maybe the heat outside had something to do with it (we are approaching spring and summer and in the South it is really humid and hot) so I let her rest most of the time.
I accidentally stumbled upon the ConsumerAffairs website and read other testimonies of owners who have pets that have eaten Canidae food and their symptoms matched my dog's symptoms (obsessive itching and scratching, loose stool, lethargic) and I was shocked. I have taken her off of the Canidae treats totally (it has been a week now) and she is back to her playful energetic self again. I don't know what Canidae puts in their products to make the animals so sick but shame on you Canidae. I will tell everyone I know and all of the stores that stock Canidae products. I have used Merrick products for several years and have never had any problems. It is all Merrick all the time now for my dog.

We recently put all of our beloved bullies on the Canidae dog food with very high expectations from past users, etc. Not probably a good month into the food, we noticed horrible gas, their poop was like yellowish, runny and they acted like they were still so very hungry when they were done eating their meal. Today, I am a believer of all the posts on this website! I will never use this food again and will tell everyone that we have turned on to it to find something better. One of my top females was bred and we delivered her pups today. Every one of them was a water baby! We have never had a problem with this, ever. This female was indeed very top-quality and very healthy! My vet does believe that was the problem that caused all these poor, innocent puppies to lose their lives! My heart is sick and I will never, never forgive this company! As far as I am concerned they owe us $2,700.00 per puppy plus all costs of the treatment of clearing all their poop issues! It is so sad that we trust companies to do their very best and provide us with the highest quality of food. You should be ashamed of yourselves!!

I have a dog who has been ill in the past 3-5 months since I started feeding him this brand of food (Fall '08). He's had chronic GI distress to the point of systemic disease with depression, lethargy, neurologia, unthriftiness and weight loss. Early tests (in Dec.) indicated low grade inflammatory hepatitis which has not been cured (as revealed by recent testing in March). He's been on a therapeutic diet along with medicinal treatments, but it has been a very slow recovery, agonizingly so!
His signs/symptoms are exactly what have been described by pet parents in this website and others, thus I strongly believe/feel it's due to the food (also personally know p.p. with same problem in their dog). My dog just turned 11, thus not an age can easily handle this type of health crisis especially since had pre-existing problems plus has been through previous food contamination exposure (in March '07 via Nutro brand). I am really disappointed and distressed that he's probably been poisoned again by a high quality food no less. What do I do now?! I would give him people food but it's just as risky for contamination and poisoning!

Canidae ALS made my dog horribly ill too! I have been feeding her Canidae for over a year, but I noticed a drastic change in her stool and her energy level after Canidae switched their formula. It got so bad that my dog would not even eat the food. I fed her some home-cooked meals for a couple of days and her recovery has been remarkable. I have now switched her dog food and she is back to her old puppy power ways. If not for the Consumer Affairs site and the owners who posted their stories and dogs symptoms, I would have continued to feed my dog the Canidae. The moment I switched her food, she began to get better.
I am furious! Companies like this make me sick that their profit margins take precedence over ethics and morals. What sickens me more is that I recommend Canidae food to my family and friends that have recently been new dog owners and they have had the exact same results (vomiting, diarrhea, excessive gas, lack of energy, etc). I feel lucky to have figured out what was causing my dog to be sick, but what about those owners who may not be as fortunate? If you have been feeding your dog Canidae dog food, stop and throw it out! I for one will be telling anyone that is a dog owner, food supplier or anyone that will listen about my situation and to not feed Canidae to their pets.

Our dog (1-year-old) has been experiencing a lot of diarrhea since you have changed your formula. She does not want to go near the food. She seems very hesitant to eat it, and she has left diarrhea everywhere for a week. I finally realized that there is a problem with her food. My daughter who lives downstate uses the same dog food for her dog. When I told her Sky's symptoms, she said that her dog has been doing exactly the same thing. You need to be more thorough in your testing on dogs before introducing a new product. I plan to switch dog foods, but I now have almost a whole 44-lb. bag left.

I don't know why this is happening to other people's dogs when they gave their dogs Canidae. But we started giving our dogs' Canidae in 2003. We had to stop in August 2004 because we moved to TX and did not know where to purchase it. We then found a place that would deliver Canidae Platinum to us and that was in January 2006. We have been giving our dogs Canidae ever since. Our dogs have not had any reactions to to Canidae dog food, except that they have better stools now. They have nice, shiny coats and they have lost weight. We stand behind Canidae 100%.
What people have to realize, in my opinion, is that we are humans and no one is perfect. Just like any other company out there, there will be mistakes and may have bad batches of food. Just look at the peanut butter scare or the other scares out there. It's not good I know, but it's reality. I have contacted Canidae and I try to keep up on their food and any changes. I also do my own research on the food. I want to make sure my dogs are getting the best food possible. I have talked to several pet stores regarding the new formula switch and I asked them if they got notices. Do you know what every single one has told me? They said that they get so much mail that it's sometimes impossible to go through every single piece of mail and they end up throwing it away if it's not a bill.
And in my opinion, if your dog got sick and you went to that pet store where you purchased your Canidae dog food to complain, I bet that store said they never got anything in the mail. **! They just don't want to admit it. Not every dog food is for every dog. Each dog may act differently on each dog food. I know that when we gave our dogs Science Diet years ago. One dog did well and the other one did not. That was when we found Canidae for both dogs. It was the best dog food. What ails some is not going to ail them all. Maybe your dogs didn't do well on Canidae, but for every dog that didn't do well, there is another one that is doing very well on Canidae. We love Canidae and will not change.

Two changes occurred around the same time. On Monday morning, I applied Sentry Pro XFT to my dog. Meanwhile, the diet transition to Canidae was occurring. On Monday, we were at 50/50. On Tuesday morning at 4am, the dog started vomiting. I discovered she was eating dirt from the houseplant. On Tuesday night, she was eating grass all along her walk. On Wednesday morning, there was more vomiting. She did have a small bowl of Canidae on Tuesday night, and it’s all over my apt now. On Wednesday night, she had bad diarrhea. The grass eating has stopped so I gave her some boiled chicken. She feels like she’s running a fever. At first I thought it was the Sentry. She acted funny the first time I gave it to her, but she didn’t throw up. Now I suspect it’s the Canidae rice and lamb. What a waste of $35. I will put her back on 'Ol' Roy' before she eats Candiae ever again.

I've been feeding Canidae All Life Stages dry food to 3 of my 5 dogs (Whippets) for 2-3 years. I chose Canidae because they only used US ingredients. They all did fine with the formulation change - although a note on the label would have been nice. Soon after I bought the most recent bag, one my my whippets got violent diarrhea with a yellowish mucousy discharge. I gave her Kaopectate and put her on chicken and rice homemade diet. She did well on that until I tried to get her back on the Canidae; she got the diarrhea again.
I thought I may have tried to change her diet too quickly so I went back to chicken and rice again. When she was better, I very slowly (2-3 additional kibbles a day) added the Canidae back to her diet. When she reached 25 kibbles, the diarrhea returned. I took her to the vet today to rule out sickness and parasites. She got a clean bill of health. My other 2 whippets who are on the Canidae also got diarrhea. I was able to clear them up about 90% but their stools are still soft, not firm like they have always been. My last 2 dogs who did not get sick are eating other foods. They do not eat the Canidae.
I spoke with Beth in customer service. She explained how it could not be the food because of the extensive testing they do for each batch of food - including both their own in-house testing and then testing at a 3rd party lab. I explained that it had to be the food as my dog had received a clean bill of health with the exception of the diarrhea and the only dogs of mine that got sick were the dogs who ate Canidae. In my opinion, this batch has something wrong with it and it was not tested.

I was feeding my cocker spaniel what I thought was a good food from our local supermarket. His eyes was always running and he just didn't look as good as he should. I switched to Canidae ALS before the formula change and the difference in his eyes and coat was amazing. No more runny eyes! I was dismayed that Canidae chose to change the formula because I was so pleased with the quality, especially for the price. When I called Canidae and inquired why they were changing, I was told that it was due to the increase in cost for rice. I was not pleased. I guess others were not pleased with that initial honest reply, because I called again and was told that the formula had not been changed due to rising cost but that it had been improved.
Well, perhaps according to them, but sadly my dog has been itching non-stop since the change. He's been wearing long sleeve shirts and is bathed twice weekly with an expensive shampoo. I loved the old Canidae formula and wish they hadn't changed it. I would have paid more for the product. As it stands, I am currently trying my cocker on a different food. I contacted Canidae yet again and they were very responsive and sent me a coupon to sample their grain-free formula. I will give it a try, but I'm just so disappointed that they cut corners in the first place.

So I tried to slowly introduce one of them back to the Canidae, and immediately she got the mustard yellow runny diarrhea again. I breed Mini Aussies and have been using the Canidae All Life Stages dog food for a few years with no problems. After Canidae made changes to their formula last summer, one of my dogs, my best super gorgeous male, started losing weight rapidly and urinating excessively. On August 15, 2008, I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with diabetes which is not usually seen in this breed. He was so sick that I ended up having to put him to sleep just a few weeks before his 5th birthday. I still miss him!
My other dogs also were losing weight and had loose stools. After the diagnosis I suspected it was related to the changes Canidae was making to the food. I took all of my dogs off of the food. It has taken several months for my dogs to get back to normal, some still aren't quite there yet. I will never use Canidae again. I had been so thrilled when Canidae was not affected by the 2007 recalls, now I am so disappointed in them. I do my best to feed my dogs all natural high quality Holistic dog foods, but what really is high quality now?
My best dog had to be put to sleep which has a negative effect on my ability to make an income. It takes two years to bring a dog up to breeding age and I am still looking for a replacement for him. Some time in the summer of 2008, Canidae changed the formulation of their dog food. I knew nothing about that. I knew they decreased the bag size and increased the price. Shortly thereafter, my young German Shepherd started to die. At first, it was a strong allergic reaction. The itching was unbearable for her. Then she stopped eating. I don't recall if she was vomiting or having diarrhea, but she refused to eat it.
I switched dog food, but she continued to refuse to eat or she ate only minimally. She started wasting away. As a young thin dog already, she lost 10-15 lbs. We struggled getting her to eat, but she became lethargic. We knew then she was dying. I took her to the vet. He ran some blood work, and found some indication of a bacterial infection, but also found some other troubling indications about her blood. I don't recall the medical term for it, but he implied she was having some auto-immune related condition. He put her on steroids.
She immediately began eating again (not Canidae, I assure you). We hoped that this would be a temporary condition, and after a couple of weeks, we eased her off the steroids. She was good for a short while, but then quickly dropped her food intake until again, she was refusing to eat. We almost lost her again near Christmas. Back to the vet again, and back on the steroids. He felt like this was something that was going to stick around. He suggested we could take her to specialists, but implied we likely wouldn't be successful at curing her. We couldn't afford it, and we decided to continue with the steroids.
He suggested we alternate days giving her the steroids. We found quickly though that if she missed a day, she wouldn't eat that day. This went on up until this last week, and although with the small dose of steroids she seemed normal, all was not fine. Suddenly, on Friday, she took a nose dive. She became lethargic and before we really realized how serious it was and could get her back to the vet, she died Saturday night. She was only one and half years old.
We'll never be able to prove it was the dog food. We never even got a firm diagnosis. We also had two other dogs who ate the same food without symptoms. However in our hearts we know why she died. She died because Canidae wanted to make a little more profit. My 11-year-old girls will beg to differ that they improved their product last year.

It appears that a couple of the owners, partners, shareholders, or employees of Canidae have made a couple of the more recent posts. You have to question the motives and agenda of people who are supposedly happy customers, actively seeking out a forum of unhappy customers to post testimonials about that product. The suggestion by one person that poor breeding could cause a dog to become violently ill with one dog food, but be perfectly healthy with another is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever read.
There are dozens of posts in this forum describing the same problem or variations of it, and I believe these posts represent hundreds, if not thousands of people that have experienced the same problem. I have personally questioned three pet food retailers that carry Canidae, and all of them admitted to having numerous customers that have had the same experience as me.
I am a test engineer by trade, so I am quite familiar with the process of eliminating possible causes and controlling variables in order to isolate a problem. My story is very similar to many of the previous posts. My dog is a rescue that I took in at 1 1/2 years old. I had not used Canidae before so I did a lot of research and decided it was one of the 4 or 5 healthiest brands. Everything seemed okay for a while, then he started having problems with diarrhea and vomiting in the same time frame as most of the other folks who have posted previously. I took him to the vet where he was tested for intestinal parasites, infection, etc., given medication, and told to put him on rice and pasta until things got under control.
Everything cleared up within a day, so I started gradually working him back into the Canidae (so if he did not have a gradual enough transition to the new formula before, he sure was getting it now). I was feeding him small portions 3 times a day. I took almost 2 weeks to put him back completely on Canidae, and within 3 - 4 days, the same problems were back. Another trip to the vet, more tests, more medication. The vet asked if he could be getting into something that he shouldn't be, and I explained to her that he is never outside unsupervised, not allowed to eat anything when he is outside, and never fed table scraps. We went through the same process again, and this time he was okay for a week or so after going back to the full Canidae diet, but sure enough, the problems started again.
This time I immediately took him off of the Canidae and put him on rice and pasta. Even without medication, he improved within 1 day. This is when I started to suspect the food since that was the only variable. Everything else in his life was exactly the same. I decided to find another dog food and settled on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. I gradually transitioned him to the Chicken Soup for 2 weeks, and now he has been eating it exclusively for 2 months. Since I stopped feeding him the Canidae, he has not vomited once. Not only has there not been a single instance of diarrhea, but his stools are firmer and he goes less often. I firmly believe that all of his problems were related to that food.
I'm sorry that I did not stumble onto this website until after I figured the problem out on my own, but seeing all of these posts tells me that it wasn't just a bad bag or a bad batch of food, they appear to have a chronic problem with their food that they are unwilling to admit to. Hopefully they will be forced to admit it whether it would be through lawsuits or just lost sales.

After doing some research online did we finally notice that Canidae had changed their formula. Funny, the company never really bothered to be more upfront about their changes with their clients.
Almost 6 months later, our dog is still suffering skin allergies, even though we've changed the formula. I think is irresponsible and unethical that a company such as Canidae, who supposedly takes great pride in its product changes a formula without properly telling its clients. I had called Canidae a couple of times during the changing and felt that they did an excellent job of answering all of my concerns. I believe if these stories were true about Canidae, in all those dogs, over all those years, we would have at least had some problem. NONE!
Quite the opposite actually, our dogs are softer and shinier than they ever have been. Our one female who used to experience yeasty ears, now has no problems with her ears at all.. Nice firm stools, they eat far less and they poop far less. I would say after trying most of the dog foods on the market.. Canidae is the best food out there. Good quality ingredients, good results, and decent price for the food. If people are experiencing problems I suspect that they should look at the breeding of their pets rather than the food. Badly bred animals regularly develop seizures and other health issues mentioned here.

I have been a vet tech for over 20 years. I have 5 German Shorthair Pointers from 2 yrs to 11 yrs and have fed all of my adult dogs Canidae ALS for over 4 years with no issues... However, since the fall, ALL of my dogs began having various issues starting with tremors, seizures and vomiting bile, with 3 of my 5 dogs having triple phosphate crystals in the urine (the senior male dog developed a severe bladder and prostate infection needing 4 ultrasounds and a specialist). My regular vet and boss was amazed that there were multiple dogs with the crystal problem and insisted it could be my food or water (which was tested for ph and phosphates and was ok).
I defended Canidae, as I had fed for over 4 years with no issue. (Come to find out, there was a formula change that I did NOT know about!!) I called other breeders who fed the food to see if there were any crystal problems with their dogs and found out all this other info that other pets are experiencing. Meanwhile, in the fall my puppy was weaned onto Canidae from Eukanuba puppy and had 3 grand mal seizures within 2 months (requiring a visit to the neurologist); ALL 5 dogs were having central nervous tremors/vibrating a few weeks prior to his seizures, so we were suspecting a toxin and/or change in the environment.
After reading other pets' problems with tremors and crystals and suspecting finally I might have my answers to my pet's health problems. I called Canidae and got a return phone call telling me that my dogs’ problems could not be caused by the food. They only added vegetables and kept treating this as a single dog problem. I had to remind her of ALL 5 dogs’ issues. AFTER I told her I was a vet tech, she told me I could FAX my records to be forwarded to their vet on staff. I did fax them and have had no response.
My dogs are NOT eating Canidae now; all 4 vets who have seen my dogs are highly suspicious of the timing of all the problems and have said food can have toxins or create bad urinary health. My neurologist tells me that we won't know if the puppy or other dogs will have permanent CNS damage as we can't test for what we don't know; and maybe the toxins might pass out in 3-4 weeks. Funny how the dogs that were on the sd or cd prescription diets to dissolve the crystals did not have tremors or vomiting and now the others or off Canidae; the tremors have stopped.
We are still doing testing on the urinary issues and have one more ultrasound to go on my senior dog to recheck the bladder/prostate infection. I am passing the word on to everyone I see at dog shows and hopefully other pets will not have to suffer. My expenses are OVER $2,000 for rx, lab work and specialists, etc. and that is with my 50% staff discount. And all along, it was my precious Canidae!!

I have five dogs of which only two were eating Canidae. I was transitioning off the food as when the formula changed the dogs were all experiencing itching and constant backwards sneezing. Two dogs were less bothered so I let them finish the bag. Interestingly enough, both dogs came down with serious infections at about the same time. One in his lymph glands and the other in his prostrate. The Canidae is gone and after courses of antibiotics both dogs are doing well. I feed mostly a raw diet that I make myself and feed some kibble mostly to bump the calories in the working dogs. I fed Canidae for years with good results so honestly didn't think of the food first and still am not sure if the infections were food related. It is curious though that the only two dogs on Canidae were the ones who got sick.

My dog has 3 years and I switched to Canidae Dog Food about a year ago (bought 3 bags). I have realized in the past 6 months that she was licking her paws a lot. 2 months ago I saw that she had some little bumps on her front paws. At first I thought it was caused by salt (Canada's Winter). But I started to worry when I discovered today that she was scratching her face a lot and saw that one side of her mouth was swollen. Everything coincides with the time I start to feed her with Canidae. And by reading everyone's feedback on the internet, I am learning that I am not the only one.
I am very disappointed to learn that many dogs got food allergy symptoms after eating Canidae Food. I thought that it was a great product but I will have to stop feeding my dog because of the reaction it is causing her. I am starting to question the quality of Canidae and most of all the ingredients. Thank you for listening and hopefully I will get answers from that situation. I want to know if Canidae is under investigation for all the dogs that got allergies by eating their food.

Thanks to Canidae, my dog is living a happy, healthy life. Prior to feeding her this wonderful dog food, she licked and chewed at her paws continually and suffered from chronic ear infections. I did a lot of research which lead me to Canidae. A month after switching her to Canidae, her symptoms disappeared and her ears are healthy and clean. Her coat is shiny, soft with little to no shedding. I have a large family and everyone feeds their dogs Canidae with the same results I have experienced.

I have NO issue with the place of business that I purchase my dog food. They do everything they can to satisfy their customers. I am Happy with the service that has been given to me for the last four years of doing business with them. For four years, they have been selling my dog food to me and I have never had a problem. I usually purchase the Product #1130 Canidae Lamb and Rice meal but due to income, this last time I purchased the dog food, I picked up a cheaper bag 12/03/08 of Canidae Chicken Meal and Rice formula. It was $32.51 charged to my Visa.
I noticed the dog not eating daily and having problems with her bottom, licking and thought maybe it was worms. I took a sample to the vet 12/10, first checked for worms, $31.01, and none found. Expressed anal glands and found blood in one infected, medication $28.49. I didn't do anything different, only changed her food once from the lamb to chicken in December. For 2 years she has eaten the lamb. Had to go back to the Vet, Jan 14th, express $12.69, the other was infected and more blood came out. The doctor gave her more meds, had to leave her there to have the anal glands flushed and $228.00 later, with a higher dosage of antibiotic, I am maxed on my charge card.
I heard that Canidae changed their formula and never told anyone so I didn't pay attention to changes. I purchased the 30-lb bag which lasts me two months. I still have two feedings left that I didn't give her as I was told to switch her food to another brand and stop Canidae immediately. The upc code is: 6 4046101130 8. We never had any problems prior to feeding her this new bag of Chicken Meal and Rice.
I would like to know if you can check into this for me because I'd like a refund on my dr. bills credited to my Visa and for the food that made her sick. I didn't feed her one evening after being told to stop the food and gave her just rice and chicken the following day, I began small amounts of the new food as I couldn't add the old to the new as it created her to be ill. She didn't want to play, laid around and slept. She ran a low grade temp, I think. Since I have changed her food I see a difference in her personality. She wants to play again and is acting normal.
I would like the company, not my place of purchase to refund my money if this UPC code is the one that they did not inform their customers of a change, or is outdated. My dog has been on the Lamb and Rice meal for two years now and never had an issue until the Chicken meal. I'm sure the store of my purchase has no idea either that the food was changed without anyone knowing. I have not bothered them with this until I speak to someone and am starting here before I call Canidae. I don't know what to do next. Thank you.

My wife posted on here back in September about our Black Lab that we lost. We read about all of the other people’s pets that are getting sick after eating Canidae and we feel horrible. We had clicked on the box about having an attorney contact us. We were contacted and the process began. We (my wife and I) believe our dog died from aflatoxin poisoning, after looking at the evidence that we had the attorney had our food tested. Unfortunately, we had put the unused food on our three season porch (which gets very cold) and the tests came back negative. We looked into aflatoxins and discovered that the cold kills the bacteria that causes aflatoxin poisoning.
The point of me telling all of you this is. If you are taking the time to tell people what happened to your dog after eating Canidae dog food, take the time to talk to an attorney. It doesn't cost you anything but a few seconds of your time. Maybe one of you out there has a bag of food that can put Canidae out of business, then no more dogs will get sick and or die. PLEASE DO NOT click on the box that says I do NOT want an attorney to contact me about my complaint. Take a few seconds and maybe you could be the person to stop the sickness. Thank You.

These surgeries cost me more than $4000. NOTHING else in their diet had changed. I called Canidae and they took NO responsibility, just told me, "Sorry, this happened to your dogs." PLEASE don't use this food.

We were ALL misled by Canidae pet foods. They did NOT notify us of any changes nor was it posted in my breeder style... high volume type pet food store. If we had better agencies monitoring, we'd have had ACTION against this unprofessional company. The FDA needs a TOTAL overhaul, i.e., deadly pet food incidence... peanut butter illnesses and HUMAN deaths! Canidae needs to be sued... as at least we'll have SOME recourse and they will be FORCED to cover our companion animals' vet bills. I have two show dogs that were affected by this "food".
Same problems as previously listed. GI problems, skin allergies... even blew their coats inside of three weeks from ingesting. Sadly, what I TRUSTED to be a nutritious and SAFE food. Nothing could be further than the truth. I notified the company of my situation and received NO RESPONSE. Perhaps companies like Canidae and that salmonella infested peanut factory... will be brought to justice under the new administration as they've promised an overhaul of the FDA. The current AAFCO is a joke...as it's owned and funded by the pet food companies themselves! That is the very impartial "group" that oversees pet nutrition and feeding guidelines.
AAFCO is on EVERY commercial bay of pet food to make it look official. It is NOT. After the last pet food scare... I was forced to to days of research and watch the senate sub-commitee hearings on the illness and death of so many of our beloved companion animals. Senator Dick Durbin D Illinois was committee chairman. The senator exposed the pet food industry single-handedly. Email him and tell him of YOUR experience. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Let's document and publish ALL our experiences with Canidae and ANY other pet food company who thinks that they are above the law. THEY ARE NOT. WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE.
In the meantime...research your pet food choices CAREFULLY. Most grocery store brands are owned by the major food manufacturers and the food is "not fit for human consumption" trash that didn't make it into our food supply...just into our beloved pets. RESEARCH. It is true... Knowledge is liberating and VERY powerful. Thanks for your time and be well.

I have fed Canidae ALS to my 5 dogs for 4 years. I did not notice any changes in any of my dogs when the formula changed. Actually, their coats look great!! I trust this company and I feel that any changes that they make in their products is only for the best. I feed the kibble and the canned daily and have had absolutely no problems with this product!

Our Border Collie has been sick for about a month. Couple of changes happened at the same time. One change was that she was vomiting her dog food, a yellow/green bile, and lost significant weight. Another change was that she started to lose her fur in clumps. Still another change was her fur had lost its shine and was very dull and dry looking. Her stool has a strange yellow color and consistency. She has been very distressed, not able to get comfortable and paces. Since the start of these changes, we have taken her to 3 different vets but they have not been able to isolate what the problem is. We have been using Canidae All Life Stage Formula dog food for about 3 years with good results.
We got a new bag in December and since then, these problems have all begun. We decided to stop giving her Canidae Dog Food this week and feed her chicken and rice, or beef and potatoes and she has not vomited in several days now. I am concerned there is a problem with the Canidae dog food we bought which has BEST BEFORE 26 JU- 09 on the bag. Until one month ago, my dog was very healthy, strong and vibrant. Even though she has stopped vomiting, she is still quite ill, and weak. I am praying, that with time my wonderful, healthy dog will return to us.
