PLEASE READ!!!!! I have been feeding my English Mastiff Canidae since she has been 8 weeks old. She is now 8 months. I always keep my dog food stored in an airtight container, and I am the only one who feeds my dog. Today, I scooped out her breakfast from the bag of dog food, and I found a dirty rusty nail as I poured it into her food dish. I work for a Doctor and have no construction going on at home, so where would it have come from?? Thankfully, I noticed this before she started to eat. If I can give anyone a bit of advice regarding this brand of dog food, DON'T USE IT!!! This may be a once in a lifetime occurrence but that is enough for me. I have contacted the company regarding this and funny enough they have not gotten back to me... Imagine that.

Our dog, a Sheltie who is 8 months, has been eating Canidae hard and can for months. She has experienced repeated bouts of diarrhea and vomiting up undigested food off and on for the latter part of this period. In checking this site, we found many other pets experiencing similar symptoms. While at first, we did not suspect the food because it came highly recommended by our breeder and others, even the Vet was initially unsure what the cause was but suspected more serious issues and in fact she could have more serious problems as a result of eating this food.

I would also like to report my experience with Canidae Dog food. My year old Springer Spaniel had been on Canidae for about 6 months when we noticed the change in her stools when we started a new bag of food (yellower kibbles, larger) I did not immediately think it was the food, but her stools became yellow and soft, and eventually like goo with no form. She was always hungry and she never really was one to eat her food right away. She was stealing from the counter, which she had never done before.

Over the course of 1 40 pound bag, she was losing weight; coat was dimming in color, she looked sad all the time, and was having anal gland problems. We brought her to the vet throughout this time period and had her tested for worms, etc. Everything came back normal. We changed her diet gradually to another holistic Wellness diet, and she continued to be sick. After 3 switched of food, she was not better. One day, she had an accident in the house, and it had NO odor whatsoever. When I scooped it up into a baggie, I realized it was very heavy and mostly undigested food.

I brought her back to the vet, and they again tried to switch her food to a Core diet of all protein and veggie, no grain, as they thought perhaps it was a grain allergy. I insisted on a malabsorption test as I truly believed that she was not digesting any food. They did not think this was the case, but ran the $200 test, and found that indeed, her pancreas was not functioning. She is now on Pancrease which assists her in digesting her food, and is doing great. She has gained back almost all her weight, and is content again with normal stools and appetite.

I truly believe that the formula in Canidae caused her pancreas to shut down and somehow poisoned it. The blogs show most dogs have similar stools and issues. I would implore you to also get your dogs tested for malabsorption syndrome, as it is rarely if ever seen in a young dog such as mine. Hopefully, her pancreas will rejuvenate, but if it does not, she will be on this medicine for the rest of her life.

Similar story; my Labradoodle pup started having chronic diarrhea in November at age 7 months. We did the chicken and rice thing, like most here thinking it couldn't be her kibble, as she had been on Canidae ALS since weaning. But every time we'd reintro the Canidae, the diarrhea would return. Poor thing was barely house broken and had so many accidents inside, emergency trips outside 8 and 10 times nightly. We were going crazy with it, not to mention the damage to my bedroom carpet!

After over $600 at the vet, FortifFora, antibiotics, same story as many here, someone told me to visit this site. Yikes! It's the Canidae! I called them, but they gave me that slow transition to the new formula song and dance. Forget it. We switched to Taste of the Wild dry kibble with Natural Balance Tube soft food twice daily and it put the doodle back in our Labra. She is much better. Shame on Canidae for not admitting their error - like I said, when I called them - if it ain't broken, don't fix it! Why would you change your formula??

I am updating on my earlier post. After switching to Natural Balance Duck and Potato, our dogs are doing much better. Although now it seems that any small change in their food causes an issue. I used to be able to change their food up as they seemed to get tired of a particular flavor or brand. That isn't an option anymore. Obviously something in the Canidae is irritating the systems of all these dogs. Maybe it isn't a particular ingredient or contamination. Maybe it is the combination of certain ingredients that cause a toxic reaction. Either way, Canidae should take some kind of responsibility and be held accountable.

Since the end of December, our 3-yr-old Great Dane (Molly) has been throwing up her dog food. First, I thought she had been getting into something. Note: I Never feed her any table scraps, just Canidae & the dog treats. The vomit was always just the dog food and seemed undigested? She has been on Canidae since 8 weeks old. I also have recently noticed her going out more, coat getting dull not to mention the vomiting up her food many times a day. She was also losing weight. Still not thinking it was the Canidae, I tried fasting her for 24 hrs. Vomiting stopped so I then started feeding her small amounts many times a day, which did not work. She started throwing up the food again.

I never thought the dog food that we pay dearly for & trusted to be top quality would be the cause. I even recommend this product to friends & family. The other night I, for some reason, searched complaints on Canidae dog foods and found this site. She goes to the vet, 1/15/08. I wrote Canidae prior to finding this information so we will just see what they have to say to me!! Last night, I bought a bag of Science Diet Nature's Best. So far she has had 2 small feedings and made it through the whole night without vomiting!!!

My experiences with the change in Canidae's formulation have been the same as many below. Specifically, my 5-year-old Boxer has been on Canidae ALS her whole life with no problems, and I always praised and recommended the food to others. My boxer also suffers from a sensitive stomach, and Canidae was the only food I ever found that her sensitive stomach could handle. B/c of this, I always kept a close eye on her diet, and I was well aware of the change in Canidae formulation - not through Canidae directly though, but b/c I was reading a pet food review online and the change was mentioned.

In October 2008, I went ahead and purchased a bag of the new Canidae, and over the course of one month, I changed my Boxer over to a diet of only the new formula, by mixing the new Canidae in with her remaining old Canidae slowly. Unfortunately, her health has slowly deteriorated since October. I only hope now that my boxer's health problems are reversible, but that has yet to be seen. My boxer's symptoms, like many, began with vomiting and gas, tendency to chew her feet, and an overall lethargic/uncomfortable look to her. I attributed this all to her sensitive stomach issues, although never to the Canidae directly. She would temporarily be put on a diet of chicken and rice or Prescription I/D until her stomach would even out, then back to the new Canidae we would go. We have repeated this cycle for the past 3 months.

Approx. one month ago, however, my Boxer simply refused to eat anymore of the Canidae. To know my dog is to know this is a significant finding, as my boxer is perhaps one of the most food driven dogs I have ever met, and she never misses a chance for a meal. A visit to the vet, 4 days worth of Cerenia (anti-nausea med), and we were back to eating the Canidae again. Never once did I doubt the quality of her dog food, nor did my vet. However, after the Cerenia wore off, complete refusal to eat the Canidae once more. Because her symptoms were so severe, and by this point she has lost a significant portion of weight, my vet worried that there may be some other underlying condition.

The following were performed: complete blood work-up, analysis of kidney function, analysis of liver function, x-rays, and sonograms. Everything appeared 'normal', my boxer was placed on Cerenia once more as well as an antibiotic. It was only after further weight loss and refusal of Canidae one again after completion of the Cerenia, that I began to question the quality of her food and spent some time online noticing that many others have had similar problems. My Boxer has now been on a prescription diet for 12 days. Although she no longer refuses food, she still is lacking that spring in her step. Since I continued to feed her the new Canidae for approx. 3 months despite the various symptoms that were present, I'm afraid this has had a lasting impact on her health.

Now that the connection between the decline in her health and the change in her food formulation has been made, and in light of the many other complaints, we are headed back to the vet for further testing. I am keeping my fingers crossed at this time that her current state is simply due to a very troubled digestive system from this new formula and nothing further, and that this is hopefully reversible, at least in time. Perhaps eventually she will return to her bubbly Boxer self after a complete switch in diet.

I simply cannot express how disappointed I am in this company, and the embarrassment I feel for speaking so highly of, and recommending, this company for so many years. The timing in health issues and the change in food for my dog is too coincidental for my tastes, and my dog will never be fed this food again. Like many others, I wonder why they decided to change a product that so many already loved? I would have paid a higher price for the same formulation any day, to ensure my pet's continued health.

I posted previously on 2/13/08, citing a horrible experience with Canidae. I have followed this website and I am truly outraged that Canidae has gotten away with this. They should be shut down at the very least. I am glad that people are catching on (at a horrible expense) to this company's foul practices. I ended up with a dead dog and $6000.00 in medical bills, not to mention watching my companion die a long, painful death. I know the dog food made my dogs ill. All three of them improved when off the food and then resumed being ill when they began eating Canidae again.

When I called Canidae in February of 2008, they totally denied any formula changes and now they are claiming they had a formula change?? How does this work? Please pass the word to feed stores, vets, breeders and friends. I have already turned over 5 breeders off of this food and intend to keep passing the word. It takes a certain type company with certain types of individuals working for them to produce such a product.

Wow! I just found this website and am absolutely shocked. I'd like to add our experience. We adopted two adorable puppies in September of 2007. They were very healthy. This was right after the pet food scare and we were testing out different premium dog foods to see which ones they liked. We chose Canidae due to its taste and recommendations of quality. All was going well. The dogs liked it and our older dog did as well. It was very difficult to get at that time and it was quite frustrating.

However, I think now that it was a godsend because we had to feed them different foods half the time. In addition, all dogs were eating Eukanuba Fish & Potato dry dog food because our older dog had a food allergy. In February of 2008, the puppies were spayed and neutered. At that time we switched to Canidae exclusively as I found a store that could order it by the case for us. We also ran out of Eukanuba and switched to Canidae dry. At this same time a friend gave us a decorative candy bowl. Our older dog was often lying in front of the main water bowl and often the pups couldn't get to it, so I decided to just fill up this other bowl and put it in a different location.

I noticed that during recovery, one of the pups (the male) wasn't feeling well. I took him into the vet and his incision had become infected. They put him on antibiotics, etc. and said he should have a speedy recovery. Then I noticed that our older dog wasn't feeling well. His symptoms were the same as the puppy. Complete lassitude, lack of energy and a worried look on their faces. The other puppy (female) was feeling fine. The male pup's infection cleared up, but still he and the older dog were still not feeling well. They were not throwing up, but just obviously were feeling ill.

All of a sudden, I thought of two facts - we were feeding Canidae exclusively now and we were using that new bowl. I thought, what if the new bowl has lead? So, not knowing which was causing the problem, if any, I decided to throw out both the bowl and the Canidae - and both dogs recovered immediately! So, to this day, I don't know, but I will never touch another can of Canidae just to be safe. Perhaps unfair to Canidae and it could have been the bowl, but I need to keep my dogs safe.

We have been feeding our two dogs Canidae for over four years, and raved about the product to others. Our younger dog, a 4-year-old Papillon/Pomeranian mix, has always been the picture of robust good health - she once ingested some drywall as a pup, and never even got sick. So you can imagine our shock as her health began to decline over the last two months. She's had a lot of gas and yellow stools, and she began licking her paws, which she never used to do. She's also shedding a lot more than usual, and her coat seems a bit more dry. We suspected it was the produce and yogurt we often give her - I never suspected Canidae, as we trusted that it was premium food. During the Chinese dog food crisis, I believe Canidae touted their product and the lengths they go through to keep it safe.

Dolly has not had much of an appetite lately for her kibble, although she still eats fresh fruit and carrots and other healthy treats. But her gastric distress was so pronounced and prolonged a few days ago that we took her to the vet. A mass was found near her spleen, and she is having surgery on January 10. Several vets have told us they think it is benign, since she is so young, but we are terrified. I have no doubt that Canidae's new formula is poison and it has sickened my dog, perhaps fatally. She was examined in July 2008, and there was no evidence of a mass then. But this week, the vet felt it during the exam. Obviously it grew quickly and aggressively.

The money we will be spending is considerable, especially as my husband recently lost his job. But we will gladly spend it to hopefully restore our little girl to health. You may be wondering why our other dog is fine, since he also eats Canidae. He's also a very picky eater, and he has essentially refused to eat his kibble the last few months. He eats mostly Halo soft food, and has none of the problems our other dog currently suffers from.

Going back, I can see that the problems began a few months ago, but I just assumed Dolly was eating too varied a diet. She was also overweight, and we started limiting her food. I assumed her recent weight loss was due to that, but now realize it all happened too quickly. I am so angry at myself for not realizing that the Canidae was causing her problems, and should have taken her to the vet sooner. But she seemed mostly fine until just this week.

I pray that we have caught this mass in time, and that it's not cancer. I'll never forgive myself if she dies, and we could have prevented it by doing something as simple as switching her food. I have kept a sample from the last bag of Canidae, and the bag itself. We are going to look into having it tested. I am also interested in pursuing a class action lawsuit. It's not the money - it's the principle. Canidae needs to be punished for this.

I am horrified that so many people are having the same problem with the new Canidae dog food formula. I have been feeding my dogs Canidae for the last 3 1/2 years. Both dogs were very healthy until December. When I bought the last bag of Canidae, I noticed that the color and the smell was different but didn't think much about it. Both of my dogs experienced horrible gas and runny stool. Unfortunately, my American Eskimo dog started vomiting foam and yellow bile. He then began having seizures.

I took him to the vet and they found low phosphorus and iodized calcium. On a gut feeling, I started to research his food and found similar complaints. Immediately I switched their food and the vomiting and loose stool stopped within days. No seizures since and the blood work has started to normalize. This food could have killed my dogs and I am ashamed of a company that once could pride itself on being a top-rated human grade food. Furthermore, when I realized they switched manufacturing to Diamond, I was astounded. Diamond Pet Food made my dog sick when he was a puppy and I later found out their food was killing pets. I have spent $400 on veterinary bills so far and will need further testing. This has been a very emotional experience for me and a traumatic physical experience for my dogs.

I've been feeding my 5 year old American Bulldog Canidae All Stages since the last horrific dog food scare. She loved it, and was a happy healthy girl. At the end of this summer, she started itching so badly I had to put a cone on the poor girl. She's seemed fine since, but after reading the stories here (and never having been informed of the change or other issues from my distributor), I'm afraid to feed her Canidae anymore. Now I'm at a total loss what to feed my dog. I'm afraid to go back to Nutro (reference last dog food scare), and she has a sensitive stomach and doesn't tolerate many things easily. This dog is close to 100 pounds. Cooking for her would bankrupt me! Please--if anyone has any advice on what to feed my dog, I just want to be a good and responsible dog owner!

Our 3 large dogs suddenly developed diarrhea in late June. We came home to a whole house of yellow watery diarrhea from one end of the house to the other. We have had to have the shampoo carpeting people out three times since then and at no time did we suspect the expensive holistic dog food we had been buying and feeding for over a year. One of our three dogs is older than ten and it hit her particularly hard. Never dreaming it could be the food, we took her to the vets who began a systematic check by starting with several doses of expensive worm pills over a six week period, to no avail.

Then the vet tried a stomach medication to try to stop her perpetual diarrhea and it included an antibiotic as well as a substance to try to firm her up. Once we knew she had been hit the hardest, we followed all the dogs when they were taken out to do their business and I saw that the other two were also very soft yellow slimy stools almost as bad as the third one being treated. Another trip to the vet who suggested we switch brands of dog food and suggested one of his brands, which I knew to be inferior, so I declined and went home to research dog foods. I put in Canidae dog food customer reviews and was floored to find what looked like my own diary of digestive problems described exactly as what we have been going through from the color and consistency of the soft or watery stools to the frequency of the carpet cleaners on perfectly house trained dogs and the vet expenses.

The worst is that switching dog food for the worst one is not helping and I have had to return the new dog food to the store. I now have to cook chicken and rice and give her even more medications to try to get rid of what seems to be permanent damage because of this dog food. The latest trip cost over 250.00 for a full kidney, liver, thyroid and red and white cell check. All came out normal but she was found to have no bacteria in her intestines, good or bad, possibly due to antibiotics she shouldn't have had to take to begin with had Canidae not pulled this fast one and switched their formula with no warning.

My Holistic dog food store assured me they had not been informed, nor was there any warning on the package. Of course the price had gone up and the weight had gone down which is an economic stunt companies pull, but to add 18 new ingredients, and I read Millet was one of them which most dogs are allergic to was unconscionable. I can only continue this expensive vet schedule and try to get her back to normal. The other two cleared up after switching the food, but she appears to have suffered possibly permanent damage. And the Canidae company seems perfectly content to blame their customers and suggest all these expensive vet bills for a problem THEY created.

Updated on 01/18/2009: Update on my dog who was sick from Canidae new formula dog food, for people who need to help their sick dogs who are also on the dog food. For those of you who are at your wits' end, as we were, here is what finally fixed our dog. After erroneously treating her for worms and then giving us Albon which was supposed to be an antibiotic and a stool hardener, she appeared to be doing better on that Albon, but since we were still giving her the Canidae dog food, having no idea it could possibly be the expensive food, she got worse.

Took her to another vet who found NO bacteria at all in her intestinal tract, could have been the Albon killed everything. So he put her on 30 days supply of FortiFlora to mix into her chicken and rice (we could not give her any dog food at this point and were cooking for her) and after three days of that (no change), I called them and they said to add the Tylosin powder (which works in conjunction with the FortiFlora).

The FortiFlora adds bacteria back into the dogs stomach much like yogurt and acidophilus milk does with people. The Tylosin powder kills any bad intestinal infection and leaves the good bacteria alone. On the third day, we picked that up and that night she had her first normal looking stool. We continued that routine for 10 days, chicken and rice cooked for her, then the FortiFlora and then the Tylosin all added to her food, plus a little vitamin powder to give her what she was missing with her lack of regular dog food. After ten days and seeing her begin to have normal stools, we gradually added Innova dog food, a proven good food that all three dogs did well on, and little by little gave less chicken and rice and more dog food.

Finally, we are seeing a normal dog stool every time for over a week now. We can only pray that this will continue and she will get back to her normal self and eat the great Innova dog food and not need the home-cooked versions she has been given. She was also very happy to see the crunchy dog food which I'm sure was necessary to add some bulk for the stools. If you are having problems with the Canidae and your dogs aren't getting better, this might work for you. Please post if you try it and it works. I am cautiously optimistic that we may be getting back to normal. Canidae needs to be sued and we should contact every dog and pet website, including the ASPCA and get the word out to others who have no idea why their pets are sick after being on this dog food for years. The first order of business is relieving the animals' suffering. Then...SUE.

We have two beloved German Shorthairs, a two-year old female, and a one and a half-year old male. We had fed them a very high quality, all natural dog food their entire lives; however switched in November due to inconveniences with mail ordering. We decided to go with Canidae, another all natural food, partially because we could get it at our local pet store. After a little over a week, our female got extremely sick!!! She had a fever, and massive diarrhea and vomit all over the house!! The very next day, our male became ill with the exact same symptoms!! They are normally extremely active dogs; however they would not eat, go outside, nothing.

The vet thought that they had probably gotten into something outside, such as a mouse. We had them on antibiotics and anti-diarrheal medications for a week, which seemed to help. Our dogs had horrific smelling gas and burps, and we noticed them losing weight and having to go outside much more frequently. They were still having awful diarrhea, even trouble with having bowel movements- a lot of straining!! On New Year’s night our male had bright red blood covering his entire back side and was bobbing and shaking his head, displaying seizure like activity. The emergency veterinarian told us that he had ingested rat poison, which is ABSURD!! We have no rat poison around our home!! His stomach and intestines were completely full, bloated and stretched!!!

I am totally not a computer person by any means, but for some reason I decided to look up Canidae on-line. My heart stopped when I saw this website!! I cannot believe the testimonials of all these people who have gone through exactly what we are right now!!! Dogs are becoming extremely ill left and right and DYING!! How can this POISON still be on the shelves???!!!! My dogs were completely healthy before this supposed all natural junk entered their bodies and has eaten away their stomachs for weeks!!! This is just sickening!! I will NEVER feed my beloved pets Canidae ever again!! Despite the hundreds of dollars in vet bills, including the six hundred dollar emergency holiday charge we've spent, the point is that something needs to be done! Families are suffering from the loss and illness of their precious animals. No other family should have to go through this horrifying experience!

My dog had been on Chicken and Rice formula for 9 months when I switched in September of 2008 to Lamb and Rice (both are from Canidae). I managed the switch slowly over five days to allow her GI tract to settle. Immediately, she had constant GI problems with flatulence, yellow diarrhea and after a few days I noticed blood in her softened stool. I took her to the vet after a few days and they did a physical and ran a few exams and gave me a stool hardener for her to take. Her GI movements remained irregular and continue to have diarrhea soon after the medication was used up.

After four weeks I took her off lamb and rice and moved her back to chicken and rice. At the time, I thought it was just particular to my dog, but after finding this website today I am positive it was the food change as I am extraordinarily aware of what my dog ingests during mealtime and otherwise. Additionally, the food was large kibble unlike the older formula. I am furious that the positive changes noted by the company has resulted in all these complaints and at the possibility that my dog could have sustained longstanding health complications due to a food brand I had been shelling out my hard earned money for.

I am switching brands as of this afternoon. If you have had success with Canidae's new formula, then that is fantastic. But if your dog has had difficulties around the time you have purchased the new food formula and not much else in their diet has changed, please be aware and act immediately.

We have used Canidae dry dog food for 2 years, but since September, have had 3 dogs that needed to be put to sleep and now wonder if the food is to blame for at least two of their deaths. Two of the dogs were 12 and 13 years old, and the older dog (a Dalmatian) was on seizure medication, was losing her eyesight & hearing, and was taking Condroiton pills for her bones. Toward the end, she was having problems with balance and getting upright. The Vet said she was in no pain & we realized it was only a matter of time before we would lose her. So, when the Dalmatian stopped eating and drinking, we weren't surprised, and she was the first dog we sent to Heaven in 2008.

When the 12 year old Golden starting showing symptoms of slowing down less than a month after our Dalmatian died, we attributed it to her age as well. The fact that she had a tumor removed less than a year prior led the Vet to examine her stomach area and she believed she felt multiple tumors. It had been two days since she ate or drank anything, so the Vet took her for x-rays and confirmed the diagnosis. The fact that she was getting sick on her food and throwing up yellow mucus was mentioned to the Vet, but since cancer was presumably the culprit, there was no reason to look elsewhere. Pets age and that was an acceptable fact (so far).

However, when our black lab (on thyroid medicine & slightly overweight) began either coughing, clearing her throat, or sneezing, we again called the Vet. She said she seemed to be getting over a slight case of bronchitis but didn't see any real problem. A week later, we called again because even though the cough was slightly better, our dog wasn't eating right and we were worried. The Vet came out and took blood but was of the opinion we were looking again at a diagnosis of cancer. Somehow, I think we all should have had the hairs on the backs of our necks raised this time, but the Vet didn't seem alarmed, knowing the physical problems this dog had and again, for the third time in 3 months, we had to put another pet to sleep.

The reason I logged onto this website tonight is that we came home from dinner this evening and one of our English Setters (7 years old) who has had diarrhea for 2 days came up to me very slowly walking in a way I've never seen a dog walk before (like his body was rigid in either a spasm or like one gets with gas buildup). He normally would run out to greet us and go right to the door to be let outside, but tonight, he even looked crooked as he inched his way to us. We rubbed his belly and found it to be very hard, but it seemed to help and he did go outside.

All seems OK now, but the hairs did go up on my neck this time. This dog is not old and has been healthy as a horse since we've had him, so why, for two days, has he had the runs and what was that stiffness in his body due to tonight???? Maybe he woke up stiff from laying funny, but I'm not going to lose another dog and I am getting this dog food analyzed to see what's up!

After seeing all the comments here, I wish I had checked a month ago when our black lab got her cough, but 2 and 2 didn't make 4 until tonight! I can't imagine what the Vet bills were for my daughter and her boyfriend for all the animals they treated and lost, but I will have her get her receipts tallied. She not only lost 3 dogs and has one sick right now, but she also lost her father in November 2008, good riddance! The food is going back and I hope a class action suit is brought up against the dog food company because this is WRONG!!!! How many more dogs are going to get sick and die because of greed by corporate suits? How many more of man's best friend will we lose before someone does something to stop the sale of Canidae dog food?

We have been feeding our Jindo dog Canidae Lamb and Rice for a few months now and for the last few weeks or so, she has been vomiting (looks like yellow bile) every other day or so. I did not think much of it until I saw this website and looked at other complaints. It did worry me when I saw her vomit, but I thought it was just her eating up the stuffing from her new (Xmas) toys. But it is happening more frequently, so I am going to change to a new brand of food. Hopefully the vomiting will stop.

Healthy 7 year old male golden retriever...never had any issues with foods. Was on Canidae for over a year...no issues…then all of a sudden itching, ear infections, loose stool usually 4 hours after eating...Spent over $500 at vet for blood work, tests, all came back normal. Vet then guessed at different causes...IBS, etc...We noticed that if we added rice to the food his loose stools went away...but other symptoms remained. We changed back to previous dog food Nutro brand (which we have used for 15 years on all of our goldens with no problems) and in 24 hours he was back to normal. Loose stools GONE, itching GONE, ears cleaned up in about 3 days and have been CLEAN for several weeks now. It’s unfortunate that reading the Canidae owners letter, they BLAME their customers and advise taking your dog to the vet for exam and testing. YOUR $$ to spend on Canidae's problem. I strongly urge you to stay away from this manufacturer’s product. They simply do not have your dog’s best interest in mind, regardless of their marketing and very lame letter.

We have 3 shelties ages 8, 7 & 1 yr. old. We started feeding the 7 & 8 yr. olds Canidae about 2 years ago as we were looking for a good dog food without any fillers to keep them healthy and keep their weight under control. Our 7yo has slight hip dysplasia and an underactive thyroid for which he receives medicine, so we started them both on the senior formula that was fortified with glucosamine. Their routine is 1/2c. food twice a day (5AM & 5PM) and no table scraps or treats. We also try to walk them about 4mi/wk. They both did so well on the Canidae that their vet actually asked me what kind of food I was feeding them. We were thrilled and recommended the Canidae highly to everybody we knew. In fact, they did so well that we decided to switch them to from the Platinum to the ALS this past Fall.

When I called our local pet store (smaller family owned store) to order some additional food in mid September 2008, the owner did tell me that they did not get their regular shipment of the food that week. She told me that apparently the company was changing the size of the bags & increasing the price a little. She assumed that this was the reason for the shipment delay. When I told her that I wanted to try my boys on the ALS, she gave me several sample bags and advised me that some dogs will have more problems with the lamb formula than the chicken. Although I took all of the samples she gave me, I didn't even give my dogs the lamb recipe as I didn't want to even chance their not being able to tolerate the food and getting sick.

When I opened the first bag of the food, I noticed that it was different than the Platinum that I had been feeding them in both color and smell, but I didn't think too much about it since I was switching foods within the brand. Since switching to the new food, on 2-3 occasions, our 8yo has vomited a small amount of foamy, yellowish looking bile. Although it was odd for him to do, I never attributed it to his food. I also noticed that he licks his paws constantly. Probably the biggest change that I noticed was that our 7yo has developed a terrible case of smelly, odorous gas. They both have also lost more weight which seemed unusual to be as I expected a small weight gain when I switched them from the Platinum. Our 1yo is just finishing up with his last bag of Bil-Jac Puppy food after which I had planned to start him too on the Canidae.

My sister who lives in Charlotte and has 5 shelties (and who initially recommended the Canidae) called me last night to inform me of the problems with the Canidae since the formula change & warn me not to feed it to our dogs as her dogs are experiencing problems with the food. We were totally unaware that there had even been a formula change.

After reading many of the stories of other users on the web, my husband and I are absolutely outraged! To think that a company can be allowed to operate this way and continue to sell this dog food to unsuspecting customers is appalling. We are now forced with trying to find an open pet store on New Year’s Day to find a new food to buy our dogs so they'll have something decent to eat tonight. My husband has packaged the Canidae back up and intends on having the food analyzed to determine exactly what is in the food that is making all of these dogs so sick. I also plan on calling both our local pet store and our vet and letting them know about the problems that have been experienced with this product.

We have a wonderful 14-year-old Shepherd-Husky mixed breed that we adopted when she was a puppy. We fed her Science Diet for most of her long, happy, healthy life with no problems. In the spring she started itching and developing allergy-like symptoms. At this point we switched to Canidae based on many recommendations.

After about two months (following the ingredient change) she suddenly began vomiting yellow bile, losing weight, and becoming very lethargic. The vet asked the standard questions regarding possible poisoning, change in diet, etc. $1500 later, liver malfunction was diagnosed as the problem. We immediately put her on the vet-recommended food (non-Canidae) to ease digestion issues, and medication to help heal the damage to the liver. She gained weight, and a blood test showed her liver functions began to improve slightly. However, she continued to lose muscle mass and seemed somewhat restless. We just returned from the vet today (Dec 31, 08) after a follow-up blood test and check-up, and found the liver functions heading back down. I'm not sure it was the Canidae, but after reading so many similar events, it certainly seems likely. At 14 (or any age) liver problems will most likely be fatal, and there is nothing that can be done now. However, if the cause is related to something in the food and enough people speak up, perhaps we can save other dogs.

I have a strong suspicion that Canidae Platinum may be the root cause of a major medical bill that I just had on my Jack Russell Terrier. A few weeks ago the dog suddenly began licking its paws a lot. Then on December 21st the dog suddenly began having major abdominal pain. (I had recently switched her to Canidae food) and the bags were the new formulation. I had used the old formulation of Canidae for a year or so with no problems. The dog quit eating and had extreme abdominal cramping. There had been no other changes in her diet. She started having trouble passing stool. To my knowledge, she never vomited. The vet took x-rays and ran a barium test. There appeared to be no obvious blockages. However, the dog continued not to eat and be in pain.

Finally, exploratory surgery had to be performed in case there was a bowel obstruction related to something she might have swallowed or a tumor. The surgery found nothing other than a highly irritated stomach and bowel. Three biopsy samples were taken. The lab results were negative for cancer on all three samples. The dog still cannot ingest food so we are having to force feed her (not Canidae!). She is also on a regimen of antibiotics, stomach antacids, pain killers, etc. Since nothing had changed in the dog's life (other than the food), I suspect the Canidae food (for whatever reason) triggered this illness. All of the dog's blood work has been perfect. We have sustained several thousand dollars of veterinary expenses in the last ten days due to this event. We are still not sure whether the dog is going to recuperate.

I began using Canidae platinum in July 2008 to help my cairn terrier, Molly, lose weight. She seemed to love the food and she was losing weight...Everyone was happy!! To make a long story short, at one point I had to buy her old food that she was eating before Canidae because the pet food store where I purchased the food was closed and we were totally out of food at home.

As she appeared to be putting a little bit of weight back on I switched her back to the Canidae. I opened up a new bag just a few days ago and noticed the change in appearance. Molly has always loved to eat so like any other time, she gobbled it right up. That was about 5 days ago...since then she's suffered from 5 grand mal seizures!!! I can't help but believe that the formula change is the cause!!! It's heartbreaking to watch beloved family member suffer!

Molly has an appointment to see the vet in 2 days. Our vet has instructed us on what to watch for in case she needs immediate medical attention. As a responsible pet owner I thought I was feeding her a quality product. I truly believe that if you feed your dog quality products, along with proper exercise, etc., they can help your pet live a long, happy, healthy life.

To be totally honest, my husband and I are not in a financial situation that will allow us to spend thousands or even hundreds of dollars on our Molly....It brings me to tears to think of what might happen to Molly. My husband and I along with our 2 young children adore our beloved pet. I only hope and pray that we are able to afford her medical care. It sickens me to think that the food that I've been feeding her may have caused all this!!!

We have been feeding Canidae Lamb & Rice for over a year to our Shelties & Collies as well as 4 rescued Terriers. All was going well UNTIL this past Late Summer/Early Fall. Our yearling Shelties who typically are excellent eaters started throwing up right after eating! Not all the time but enough for me to take them in to the Vet! Nothing showed up but the only thing was the food, unfortunately we didn't know Canidae had changed its formula and we were bringing home old food then new food, back and forth which was yanking at the dogs' GI systems.

We called the Pet Store, they told us about the change but covered their story with they didn't know until now. The Canidae Representative called us and send a few coupons out for more bags of food. Things calmed down once we were on the New bags of Canidae. We did notice a new thing though, itching. We bathed and treated for everything but the food, never did we think the Food was the culprit!

Then this past November one of our older Collies, a very stable girl of 9 who always ate well stopped eating. No matter what we tried that day, she would not eat. We took her to the Vet and was SHOCKED to watch this lovely girl decline right in front of us on the Vet's table. The Vet asked if she had ingested some sort of poison. POISON I thought, NO WAY, we are 1,000% safety around here and there aren't any poisons.

Once the blood tests came back, the Vet had horrible news, Maddie was dying of possible Liver Cancer and the most human thing would be to put her down! My husband and I were in shock. How can this be? She was just frolicking with the Shelties not three days earlier. The whites of her eyes are yellow, her skin was yellow. In less than 48 hours Maddie is gone and not until I found this site and read some of the people's stories did I ever think ... Canidae ... but now!

His stools have become softer than usual and he is losing weight and his coat is thinning out. After reading about the formula change, it's starting to make perfect sense given the time frame. I am changing to another food. I thought by buying an expensive all natural food, I was providing my pet the best food out there, but I guess when it comes to profits the consumer is always the victim. The original 40 lb. bags have been replaced with 35 lb. bags but at the same original cost of the 40 lbs. So long Canidae. I have not had any issues with my dogs and the Canidae formulation change. I learned about it through the website. If Canidae sent out alerts to distributors, then it is up to the distributors to pass that info on to the consumer so the consumer can make an educated decision. I get my food from several distributors and NOT ONE made the change public. I learned through my habits of periodically checking the sites of the companies I purchase various pet products from.

None of my dogs (three Shelties and a Great Pyr) have had issues with the change at all. Now, this is not saying that some dogs will NOT have issues - but this can happen with any product. Also in regards to bugs being found in food, the FDA permits a certain number of insects and rodent bits in all foods: pet and human. Not many consumers know this. If you get a bag that the bits happen to be eggs, guess what? Also small insects can get into tiny holes in bags while at warehouses or stores. Canidae also has released new formulas that are grain free.

I have fed Canidae before and after the change and have had no issues with my dogs ranging in age from 1 - 8 1/2 years. I have had far more issues with other brands of dog food that did not make changes public until people started label reading. It is not Canidae's fault that places that they sent alerts to did not inform the public. Consumers need to be more savvy and willing to do research of their own.

With millions of dogs in the US - some will react to the changes in formulas, but many will not. As for bugs in food, well, talk to the FDA - they set the regulations. I have found flies in bags of pet seed, etc. I have found bugs in cereal boxes in sealed bags. As for contaminated food, then yes, this I will hold a company accountable for IF the contamination is their fault. Contamination can also happen through improper storage at warehouses. It can happen at the stores. A bag that gets damp and then allowed to dry out can result in contaminated food. Just yesterday, I was watching a couple store employees going through cans of cat food because there was an odd odor and it was suspected a can seal was broken. This could have happened in shipping, storage, packing at the plant or some customer's kids playing with can tabs or the plastic film on some containers and cracking the seal.

Yes, we need to jump on the bandwagon but we also have to do so with education and logical thought. Jumping blindly is not the way to go and can cause more harm than good in the long run. However, if an issue has been attributed directly to the food and proven that it happened with the company and some other factor once the product leaves the building, then they have to be accountable.

I have had issues in the past with illness in animals due to formula changes and absolutely NO public notice by the company. But Canidae tried to alert. I know people who lost animals due to formula changes that companies denied (though later admitted after pressure). I read labels to check for changes. I keep track of sites. I know the various ways contamination can happen and the FDA rules regarding bugs. We have to be educated consumers.

Today would have been my Lab's second birthday. However, we had to have her euthanized yesterday, on Christmas morning. She had lymphoma, which I have been told is extremely rare in a dog that young. She had eaten Canidae ALS since she was about three months old and initially did very well on it. However, in the late summer/early fall of 2008, she began having symptoms similar to those reported here by others. She started having excessive itching and hair loss. Her coat was dull, even after a bath. She was doing a lot of licking.

During the fall, we noticed her having a lot of foul gas. She was also having more frequent bowel movements and seemed to be straining at times. She vomited a couple of times right after eating and on two occasions I found odd, yellow, frothy vomit in her pen in the late afternoon. At no time was I ever informed of a change in her food. As a result, I never questioned her food even though I noticed a slight change in the kibble. I assumed that some of her symptoms were due to being a Lab and possible seasonal allergies. That all changed dramatically for us on Nov. 21st. I took her to the vet immediately when she got up one morning with excessive drinking and refused to eat.

I was shocked when I was called in the afternoon and told that her condition was very serious and that her blood calcium levels were very high. Her vet initially suspected that she had ingested a toxin and most likely had vitamin D toxicity due to rat poison. We never had anything like that at our home and our dog was constantly supervised. She was hospitalized for that possible condition for four days and appeared to be recovering. During that time, she was switched to another food and her symptoms immediately disappeared. Her coat became soft and silky. The scratching stopped and there were no more gastrointestinal issues.

Unfortunately, that is not the end of our story. As a precaution, she was also tested for the possibility of cancer. One test came back positive and we continued to do further testing, which was initially inconclusive. However, within a couple of weeks, she did develop the symptoms of lymphoma which led to her death yesterday. She was an expensive, well-bred hunting dog with nothing like this in her lineage. We will probably never know what part nutrition played in the development of her illness. I do know, though, that as a consumer I was not made aware of any change in her food, which I resent. If I had known, I would have had the opportunity to make a change when I saw some of the symptoms being attributed to Canidae.

I became aware of this website when I googled Canidae after our vet suspected that she had ingested a rodent poison. I remembered that I had opened a bag a couple of months ago and found a dead mouse in it. I was shocked to find hundreds of similar complaints. I have been in contact with the company and ideally, would like to have the food sample that I saved analyzed. They are not willing to do that because I no longer have the original packaging and UPC code. I know for sure that we had the new formula since late October and am quite sure that we actually started it in Sept. 2008. If there is a positive side to this, it is the fact that I have become much more educated about pet foods and hope that any experience that I have had with this company will in some way help someone else.

We have been using Canidae food for our Shelties for almost 3 years with very good results: they had good coats, no digestive problems and their weight was under control. We opened a new bag about a month ago and found worms in it so we returned it and picked up another bag. We opened that bag and found no worms but the size and color weren't the same, but we had no other food and thought the color may had been changed or the lot was different. We were never told that changes had been made to the food.

One of my shelties ate the food and started with yellow diarrhea with a terrible odor. Dragging his butt over the ice and snow as if he itched or just had to get rid of the poop. He had this 3-4 times a day, not at all usual with him. Then he stated vomiting undigested food and yellow bile. The other sheltie only ate part of her food (again not normal) and then she too had digestive problems with gas, gagging, itching and loose stools. Both dogs started itching and biting at their legs and feet. We checked them over and saw nothing. Our third sheltie was not on this food as she is too little and she has been fine.

We went online finally and discovered that Canidae had changed their food. Whatever the changes are THEY ARE NOT GOOD. We have changed the food and they are better but not themselves. The energy level is still low and the gas is still present, the diarrhea has stopped. How dare this company make such changes and not inform the public. There were enough problems with pet food before and now Canidae hasn't learn from that experience that people will not tolerate having their animals made sick by poor quality food. The cost of this food is not cheap, we expect to have the best when we buy the best or so we thought. I will NEVER buy Canidae food again.

Our dogs have been treated for urinary tract infections, neurological symptoms, lymphoma and have had odd growths removed. They have lost muscle tone and energy as well. We did not suspect the dog food since we had been using it for several years but tonight we read on the Consumer Affairs website about similar problems that others have experienced with this food, so we are going to immediately take our dogs (the 2 that are still alive) off of it.

I submitted a complaint about the change Canidae made in their dog food back in October. My Cocker Spaniel was very itchy and we had made several trips to the vets. On a visit in early December, an retired vet was covering and he decided to do a skin scraping for mange. He did not find anything, but two weeks later my dog was continuing to decline so they did a skin scraping again and still did not find anything. They decided to treat him for mange because we live in a very rural area. In seven days he was much, much better. He had his second shot for treatment of mange yesterday.

I just felt that I needed to let others know that my problem did not end up being the food. My lab had the upset digestive system on the Canidae, but that may have worked itself out if I had been able to transition him slowly to the new food. I have switched him to Fromm and will continue to use it because he is doing well. The Cocker Spaniel has been using Fromm and is also doing well.

I fed my dog Canidae for over a year with no problem. When I purchased a new bag, I noticed it was smaller in size and the kibble appeared larger, but I didn't think much more of it and fed my dog as usual. Within 24 hours of her eating it, she began gagging and throwing up mucus and had the urge to go more frequently and when I let her out to go, I would notice her straining to go. This would happen over and over until I finally went outside to see up close and that is when I noticed that her stools were loose and were an odd color and just weren't normal looking. She also stopped drinking her water, started scratching more and became lethargic. She would constantly scratch her ears, bite her tail and bite her feet. She was miserable and I was scared.

I guess I was stupid, as I simply didn't equate all of this to her food, as I had been feeding her this brand her whole life. Myself and my kids searched the yard for something she might have gotten into that may have caused this problem, but couldn't find anything. I gave my kids strict orders not to give her anything else to eat except her dog food, as I thought maybe they had given her some people food that was causing the problems. So, in desperation, I went online to see what I could find out about her sudden symptoms and planned to get her into the vet that week. That is when I was led from one link to another and found out about the change in the Canidae product and the problems others were experiencing.

I was shocked! I went to the shop where I purchase my dog food and asked them about it. They said they tried to let everyone know about the change in the product, but I must have fallen through the cracks. The owner said she had one bag left of the old stuff and gave it to me. Most of her symptoms were gone within a couple days of feeding the new food! She continued to scratch a bit longer, and I had to use a skin conditioner to help heal her hot spots, but now, she seems back to normal. I can't help but wonder what could have happened to her if I hadn't figured this out. I don't know what they did to change their food, but this kind of thing should not happen.

It is more than a simple allergy to the food. It seemed more like food poisoning to me. I am shocked that a company would let this happen to so many dogs and I am saddened that something isn't being done about it. I now tell everyone I know about it to spread the word as I don't want any other dogs to suffer like mine did. I hope this company is held responsible for what they did to my dog and so many others. Shame on them.

We have been feeding our dogs Canidae ALS for almost three years without any problems at all UNTIL NOW. We always recommended this food to everyone who complimented how beautiful our dogs coats were and their shine. After introducing the new formula our dogs had softer stools, more frequently, and stools were yellowish in color. We did exactly what Canidae had suggested about eating smaller meals and mixing old formula with new (only located on their website). The stools did improve some but one of our dogs were pooping several times a day. Recently we noticed a small scratch near one of our dogs eye; which at first we thought this had occurred during running and playing with our other dog. Within two days of the scratch he was self mutilating himself and scratching all over, his eye became red all around the lid. The scratch was not from playing but was from itching and scratching at his eye, then his head, under his chin. Everywhere! HE WAS MISERABLE.

WE took him to the vet and he is on an antibiotic for skin infection, benadryl for itching, and the vet immediately suggested we change the food. She said that it appeared something with the NEW formula was causing the allergic reaction. With so many dogs having reactions to the new formula we feel this is a consumer alert!! Our Pet Store has also had customers complain about the new formula causing loose stools. She did give us a full refund on the last bag we bought of Canidae and helped us choose another food to try. We love our food store Prohund and the owner is very informative! We will not be feeding Canidae anymore to our dogs. Our Golden has already had less eye boogers since we switched the food in less than a week and our mixed breed with the skin infection is itching less and starting to heal. Both dogs are now pooping only one time a day with normal consistency!!!

WE ARE VERY UPSET with Canidae allowing another company to manufacture their food and changing the formula that had worked so well for our dogs for many years. It is also irritating that the new bags do not have printed anywhere on them NEW FORMULA! It is frightening that DIAMOND is the company manufacturing the food after all the scare and deaths of dogs that were in Diamond recall years ago. WE are very disappointed with Canidae and do not feel we can trust this food to our dogs ever again!!!

In May of this year, my family got its first dog; a three and a half year old Labradoodle. The prior owner recommended we feed him Canidae because it's his favorite?. Sometime during the summer, he started coughing and occasionally that cough would lead to a small spit of an ugly yellow liquid (two to four ounces). Unfortunately, when I asked my vet about this, she didn't relate the problem to his diet (and yes she asked about his diet); instead she suggested that he might have allergies to something in our yard or something in our house.

As the months passed, he continued with an occasional problem and many of our friends suggested that poodles have temperamental stomachs; suggesting that the poodle side of him is always going to have an occasional problem. Yesterday, we opened a new bag of Canidae and yesterday he spent about an hour losing Canidae kibble, over and over again. I should of saw it sooner but this time it was very clear: my poor little guy has been suffering from food poisoning? We have now thrown away all of our Canidae products and replaced them with products recommended many. To my surprised, he inhaled his dinner last night and his breakfast this morning (the first time I've seen him enjoy his kibble). Today, he appears to have much more energy and thus far no stomach problems. IMHO, this thread may have helped save my dog's life. Thank You.

This is the only product I used in my kennel, except for what the customers brought with them. Since the company has changed its product I've had nothing but problem. Just like everyone else, lots of problems with all the dogs. The latest is my 1yr old yorkie almost died the weekend of 12/7/08, cost will be close about $5,000 not including the cost of maybe an operation. They put her on special food, which cost $28 for 7lbs bag. Said it could be her liver, now I have to take her back to the specialist in about a week for follow-up. I really don't have this kind of money, If I'd known about all these problems back then I'd stopped using the product long ago. Maybe we all should take the company to court, well I plan to see what I can do. A lot of my customers have told me they have had some problems with their dogs when they took them home, now I know why. Would love to say more, but I do have a kennel to run and it means a lot to me.

I switched my dogs to Canidae because it was a little cheaper than the food I'd been feeding them. Plus, the gal at the store convinced me it was better. Got it home, opened the bag, and thought it smelled funny, but I'm used to our old food smelling so good I figured it was just that I wasn't used to it. I gave it to my Sheltie. She nibbled at it, then walked away. She came back later and ate the rest, but not happily. About four hours later, she threw up. I'm taking the rest of the bag back tomorrow.

Wow, my story is so similar to everyone else's here. I had been feeding my dogs Canidae for over a year. I bought a bag back in October. Then fed it to my dogs that night. Two of them wouldn't touch it. The third one ate about 3/4 of her bowl. I thought that was unusual since my dogs usually wolf down their food. I smelled the food that was in their bowls. The food had a terrible chemical smell to it. The next day, the dog that had eaten some of it, got lethargic and had explosive, bloody diarrhea. I took her immediately to the vet and he told me it was food poisoning, and it was the most blood he had ever seen in diarrhea. I returned the food to the store, and got a different brand. Since then my dogs have been perfectly fine.

Here's where it gets interesting. I contacted Canidae the very day I took my dog to the vet. After I explained what had happened, immediately they said that the food was spoiled and it had sat in the sun too long. I told them it wasn't a spoiled smell, that there is chemical smell to it. I have smelt spoiled animal food before, and this is not it. They faxed me some paperwork, I filled it out. Every two weeks or so, I would send them an email, which they would say, "We'll look into it and get back to you," which they never did.

The day before Thanksgiving, they mistakenly called my house instead of the vet. Still I heard nothing. On 11 December, they called me and said, "We did a thorough review and found the food to have been spoiled." I asked them if they tested the food, they said yes. I called the pet store. They still have the bag at the pet store. So they didn't test it. The whole time they were very defensive and said their product could not possibly have anything wrong with it.

I went to the store today, 12 December, and found out, I wasn't the only one. At least two other people at the same store had the same problems with their food from Canidae. Not only that, Other stores all over the US had the same problem with their food. I'm only out about $150 in vet bills, but clearly Canidae has a problem with their food. I felt that Canidae was blaming me. I have never dealt with a company that was so defensive about their product from the get go. Canidae had their mind made up from the second I called them what the problem with the food was. Well, I kept a sample of the food, and I'm going to send it get it tested to find out what is wrong with it.

They suggested a new brand and the vomiting stopped the day I took her off the Canidae. She is acting fine and eating fine now. I am planning to take her back to the vet to get her checked out and make sure she doesn't have permanent damage. I have been using this food for several years with wonderful results until recently. We get our food from a locally owned feed barn, and I'm in there every 2-3 weeks buying dog food (I have 4 dogs). My 6-year-old Black Lab has had 2 seizures in the past 2 weeks, my English Bulldog has been barfing constantly and farting like a pack mule. Several years ago, my Lab had a seizure and my vet attributed it to her food. We switched and not a seizure since, so the first thing I did when she started seizing again is look into her food.

I got onto the Canidae website and found more complaints than I could read regarding the newly re-formulated version of what once was a highly bragged about human grade dog food. I am very disappointed that they felt the need to mess up such a good thing. I am in the process of dumping the rest of the new dog food back into the bag and taking it back to the feed barn where I got it. Looks like I'll have to put them on Wellness.

Dogs are healthy and happy again. Coincidence? I think not....

When I sent an email to Canidae a couple of weeks ago, I got a reply, basically blaming bloggers for trying to ruin their great reputation. The proof is in the pudding. Or in this case, in the barf, stools, etc. of our dogs. I am so sorry to hear of more severe symptoms for some dogs - liver issues, seizures. Shameful on Canidae's part. Like many other reports on your site, my dogs also experienced issues with the new formula from Canidae. We had been feeding our two terriers Canidae for almost 3 years. We purchased a new bag in November and did notice that the color and shape were slightly different but didn't think much about it. The bag didn't indicate that any change in food had taken place nor did our local retailer say anything. After 3 days on the food one of our dogs began vomiting. We immediately took her to the vet where she was hospitalized for 4 days. After returning home she continued to have symptoms (not as severe) and our other dog started refusing to eat the Canidae. I became suspicious of the food and called our retailer.

He explained that the formula had changed and they had told all of their customers. We were never told and found that odd since we are in there so much, they know us by name. We immediately took the food back. In addition, we have contacted Canidae in regards to their product. The representative told us that they are not required by law to put anything on their packaging and it was our responsibility to read the label of every bag. I'm not in the business of keeping every bag so that I can compare it to the next one. We had trusted this product. Furthermore, the company has stated that signage was sent out to stores that sold their products. I have found no signs indicating a change in either store that sales the product in my area. Needless to say we will never purchase Canidae again nor will we visit the local retail store that finds no fault in not telling their customers.

I noticed it had changed in color from a dark brown to a lighter yellow and the size of the pellets were larger. I thought it was just a change in formulation. She has been eating a mixture of 50/50 Innova Evo/Canidae Lamb and Rice for about 1 year with no problems and has had no prior health problems. After starting her on the new Canidae formulation, she began having loose yellow stools almost immediately and within the last couple of days she has been vomiting. Just today, she had a short episode of seizure-like activity. The first thing I thought of as a cause was her recent change in diet and googled recalls on Canidae and saw that quite a few people are having the same problem.

We fed her the Canidae again in the hopes that she'll get used to it but again, she got sick. Only this time, she got worse and started vomiting, and then stopped eating all together and stopped pooping too.

We took her to the vet and $450 later, x-rays showed no blockage and her vitals checked out normal, so the vet gave us medicine for an intestinal/bacterial infection and said to feed her chicken and rice only. She won't even eat that thus we can't give her the medicine! She's getting sicker, moping around and we're talking about a border collie who was in perfect health and very energetic before this. She is our baby and it makes us very sad to see her in so much discomfort. We are going to get her back to the vet for an IV drip for nutrition. We are so scared and worried about our baby! We switched foods after 3 weeks but the damage had been done. We made many trips to the vet with no idea what was causing the problem since he had been on Canidae for a long time before with no problems and Canidae said nothing was wrong with their foods during the recalls. After testing and treating for anything the vet could think of, plus us home cooking for months he started to recover after about 4 mo. About 6 mo. from the time this all started, he was almost 100%

We kept feeding him high end foods for a couple more months and then switched back to new bag of Canidae over a month period with a little gas and soft stool but nothing serious. After 2 mo. had passed and he was back to 100% Canidae with no problems other than gas, we started mixing and feeding some of the remaining amount of the BAD Canidae from 1 yr. before and within 1 week his symptoms started to develop all over again like before. Remember this was only a small portion of the original food that caused the problem mixed in with the new bag we had been feeding. This was proof that Canidae almost killed our dog after swearing nothing was wrong with their food when we called about the problems.

My story is the same as all the others on here. 7 month old GSD, fed Canidae since he started eating sold food. I got him at 7 weeks and continued with it. I learned about the change in formula and called my pet food store and asked. They said that the change was the addition of peas, white rice, rice bran and barley. Didn't sound like a big diff really. The grain % had not gone up, just become more diversified. I got a new bag (44#) and slowly, gradually mixed it with the old Canidae.

My puppy started intermittently vomiting. The barfing increased as the % of new Canidae ALS increased. I was only up to about 30% new food and the last day he started barfing about every 3 mins. It was foamy yellow bile. As I called the vet to take him in, he started having diarrhea. This was just under 2 weeks from the day I opened the new bag.

I don't believe for one second that the only addition or change to the formula were those four ingredients. I think they lied and added other things b/c no way could those 4 innocent ingredients create so much dietary upset. At the vets we did rads to see if there was an obstruction. Then a barium study to make sure. Nothing. Just an empty gut and gas pockets in his bowels.

This change was all about money for the company. In their stupid condescending statement, they act like it was bad change-over procedures that created the probs for most people but that is NOT true. I changed slow and it made no difference. He was horribly sick. Wretching up foam and nearly choking on it, lost weight, hair was falling out like never before and his breath was foul. The bags of food got smaller, the price got higher and the ingredients were changed to who-knows-what REALLY. I think Canidae should send out REFUNDS (at the very least!). But hopefully the damage has been done and will put them out of business.

I submitted a post here in August but it's not here. After feeding the Felidae Platnium canned since the Menu Foods recall, I was quite dismayed when my shipment of Felidae Platnium arrived end of July. I opened the can and the food looked different - darker and just strange. I put it out for the cats, they sniffed and walked away. Two full days and they refused to eat it.

I contacted Canidae and they said nothing had changed in their canned formula, perhaps the batch had been cooked a little different. I called PFD and they credited me and sent a new case. Same thing so I went out and found some Felidae Chicken and rice and fed that for about a month, figuring this would give time for a new batch of the Platinum to hit the market. Before I stopped feeding the chicken and rice, that too changed. I bought it at my local Gourmet Pet store and opened that up one night to find a very red looking and soupy product.

I started ordering the Platinum again in October and was shocked to see that the recent batch has changed yet again - is exceptionally light in color (looks like lots of chicken) and chunks of carrots. Consistency is gross and I cannot even tell you the poop issues and as this is their primary food, can't really transition them. I am so **.

I spent a lot of time researching foods after the recall and I was really dismayed by how the company handles complaints, by lying and saying nothing has changed, then seeing the letter here from the owners and then the company choosing to go with a company like Diamond which had its own huge recall a few years back and seems to still have some quality control issues. In this last batch, I noticed the can tops were thinner, they pop right off. So far, two were already sort of popped and when I opened them, they came right off and the food was all moldy.

I have switched the cats to Nutro Naturals as they don't tolerate Wellness, Innovo OR Natural Balance. They just don't seem to ever get used to them. I hate that I am giving them something so commercial but it seems that Canidae has sold out anyway and have lied about it. They should go under for being so deceitful.

Needless to say, $200 later and finding these complaints, I now know the food is to blame!!!! My labradors also lost weight and had no energy! I have switched food now and my dogs are looking healthier than they ever did on Canidae. I will never again feed Canidae a.k.a POISON to my dogs again!!!

My dog has been fed Canidae dog food for all of his life - 4 years. As I went online to purchase another bag, I found this website with all the people who were having problems with the new formula. As a result, I contacted Canidae and explained that I was concerned based on what I read about the new formula. They replied and pointed out that they had responded with a statement on the site.

I replied back stating that I found it strange that a company required a pet owner to alter the feeding routine or method in order to use their product; however, I would consider trying a smaller bag of this new formula if they could assure me that there are no issues with this food that will affect the health of my dog. I have re-sent this same statement twice now and have received no reply - 5 days. I am guessing that Canidae does not have a great deal of confidence in their product. I will not purchase another product from this company and will tell everyone that I know to check out this site.

My 7-month-old dog has been eating Canidae since we got him at 2 months and has, until very recently, done very well on the dog food. When we, 3 weeks ago, got a new bag of Canidae, he immediately got the runs and his stool color changed to a mustardy yellow. For a while it was quite explosive. At this same time, we noticed that the Canidae dry food had changed in look though there was no marking on the bag and we saw no posting in the store. We know that dogs need to adjust to new food, but since we had no knowledge of a recipe change and were out of the old food, we had no choice but to give him the new recipe.

Weeks later now, he is less explosive, but is not fully adjusting to the food. He has lost weight too. I will admit that his already good coat looks even better. We will be switching foods. We're angry that Canidae did not make a very good effort to warn customers. I have also read on some websites that they added gluten, a common dog allergen, to the food. I haven't checked that fact really recently though. Fitting this same timing, my parent's dog stopped eating her Canidae food entirely and lost a lot of weight to the point of poor health. Their dog is a half year older than mine and had been eating Canidae longer also with success. My folks have since switched foods and are putting weight back on the dog easily.

I had been having minor problems with my two dogs as mentioned in the other write ups, but not severe enough to go to the vet (loose yellow stool, paw licking/chewing (allergy?)). The change could explain it. I thought it was something in the yard, as I have recently moved to the South. I'm going out now to buy some different dog food. Hopefully that will fix the issues. I was, apparently, one of the few who knew that Canidae was changing formulas. I had heard rumors on various dog forums, and went to Canidae's website where the upcoming changes in the formulas were clearly stated, as were the new *bag weights*. Canidae, instead of offering 40# bags, would be offering 35# and 44# bags. I also heard that Canidae would be using Diamond's Manufacturing plant(s). I emailed Canidae, and they quickly wrote back, confirming this information.

We had used Canidae ALS for 5 years on all of our dogs, and were extremely pleased with the result. We actively promoted it, in fact, and had our local Feed Store bring it in for us. They had a great deal of success with the food. Everybody was happy. So, when the formula changed, we continued to use it. And that's when the problems began.

For the first four days, we had two dogs with severe diarrhea. So, we cut back on the amount fed, as recommended by Canidae. That seemed to fix the problem. But not for long. Within a week, four additional dogs ended up with severe diarrhea. We knew they couldn't tolerate the new formula, so started researching other foods to feed to our crew.

Last month when I bought the Canidae dry dog food, I was surprised that I paid the same amount for 10 pounds less food. I thought that was a big difference in price. I can understand that prices go up couple of bucks but to delete 10 pounds and for the same cost was not right. Anyway, I decided to pay because my dogs deserve the best and have been giving them this food for years. After I gave my dogs the food, my Male started to have diarrhea for over a week and kept grazing on the grass and could not figure why, I just thought he got into something he wasn't suppose to and got the runs.

Well, we needed to get more dog food since the 30 pounds don't last as long and my husband picked it up and he was angry about the cost of it, paid it and then started to look up Canidae online and tried to compare other good dog food to replace it. Lo and behold, he found this website with all the complaints. So it just clicked, my dog started to get diarrhea after he started with the new dog food that was 30 pounds, thank God it only lasted for over a week compared to what other people went through.

The new bag that my husband bought, since it is not opened yet, it will be taken back to the Pet feed store and I will be letting them know about this site and what happened to some of the dogs that consumed this crappy product. I will encourage them to discontinue selling this product. My husband called his brother because his dog also eats this same dog food and actually has been sick for the past couple of weeks, lethargic, vomiting and had a fever, and plus, he was extremely gassy which was extremely unpleasant, they had to take him to the vet yesterday, now he is on antibiotics. I had been feeding my two dogs All Life Stages by Canidae for 2 years and was very happy with the product. A few months ago, when purchasing a new bag, I found out the old formula had changed! Why ruin a good thing? A sales clerk at the store where I buy my pet food told me that customers were very upset that the formula changed without warning... not even the store was aware this was going to happen. I was not able to gradually change over to the new food, since I had run out of the original formula.

So, I believed that the mustard yellow runny stools would eventually firm up... not so. To this very day - my dogs have loose yellow stools. My younger dog, also had a bout with watery diarrhea for over a week. I had to go to the vets to put him on meds. The tests came back negative for parasites... the diarrhea did go away with the meds.. so that perhaps was not due to the Canidae.. but it does make me wonder.

I want to tell you that I did call Canidae to complain about the lack of warning about the formula change. No apologies from them. They told me the new formula was better. I don't believe so. I compared the old formula to the new on my own, and I do not like what I see (less brown rice, new rice bran, ocean fish instead of herring, added natural flavors, etc). I had spent months looking for a good food for my dogs, after the melamine scare.

Canidae's original formula was affordable and had great ingredients. My dogs were happy and had normal stools. After picking up more yellow loose stools this morning and searching the web for other complaints, I will again start another search for a good dog food. I'd better do it quickly...Too bad I just bought another bag... I suppose I have been prolonging the inevitable. I am sorry to read that many dogs have gotten really sick! Canidae should have kept their old formula. They have lowered their quality, made the packaging smaller and kept the same price. I wish they had only raised the price!

I, like many others, have been suffering through this new formula of Canidae. They changed the formula without letting us know, and for the past two months, my 3 dogs, who have been on Canidae all their lives have suddenly fallen ill. First, it was my Pit Bull, who had a weak stomach anyway, so I didn't think much of it, until she stopped eating altogether. She went almost two days of not eating and after about $400 in vet bills, I started cooking for her instead. Then shortly after, my Staffy girl started to have the same symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and not eating.

Now my dogs are the type of dogs who eat as if it's their last meal, so for two to all of a sudden stop frightened me. The only thing I could think of that was the cause was the food. Then 2 days later, my other Staffy got sick, which then I knew something was wrong cause he has a iron stomach. What I did find strange is that it was not a continuous sickness. They would be sick for two or three days, which during this time, I would put them on rice and boiled chicken. They would recover, and then I would gradually add the Canidae and by the second or third day, they would be sick again. I am very saddened as 2 of my 3 dogs have been on Canidae all their life and for this to happen, is very disheartening. I will no longer purchase anymore Canidae products

I then took them off Canidae and they improved. Thinking it may not be the dog food, I began again to feed them Canidae. Subsequently, within days, my extremely healthy male shepherd bloated and the other two dogs had G.I. symptoms again.

I immediately took them off Canidae. We did emergency lifesaving surgery to try and save my male, however he died many days later. In the interim, I contacted Canidae. They were not forthcoming about a new formula and denied that their food could have had anything to do with this. Canidae is a very bad, sneaky company and deserves to go under. I personally have been to all the local feed stores with my story as well as spoken to many, many breeders who have since switched from Canidae. I purchased a new bag in early October and within a week, my dog started becoming very, very sick - vomiting, loose stools, severe stomach discomfort (moaning, groaning, gas). After 10 days, when it became apparent to me that it was indeed the food making her sick, along with numerous phone calls to the Vet's office, I began giving her home cooking (rice/hamburger). Within a week, she was returning to her old self. I saved a sample of the food, simply because I thought it was poisoned, took photos of the lot numbers and of the bag itself, then returned it to my local pet food supplier for a full refund. It was the folks at the pet food shop who told me that Canidae changed their starch source - I can only imagine that due to the cost of rice, they went with a cheaper alternative.

As I mentioned, I have used Canidae for several months as my dog was tolerating it well, given the fact she takes allergy shots once a month. I will also note that my cat has been suffering from vomiting also. It occurred to me that she occasionally stole a morsel or two from my dog's bowl - Canidae made her sick also. There was no denying, our beloved labradors were both in trouble. The constant, mustard yellow, hold your breath smelling diarrhea, the intermittent throwing up right after eating, the days of abandoning their food entirely, the obsessive paw licking and toe chewing to the point of hair loss and sores, their once playful nature replaced by personality changes, lethargy and sickness had mysteriously consumed our less than three year old boys.

With absolute worry and frustration, repeated vet visits, tests for parasites, meds for vomiting, diarrhea and out of control allergies, we helplessly watched our pets continue to worsen. Canidae was a name we had come to trust, so the association with the so-called new and improved formula of Lamb and Rice dumped into their food bin, followed by their deteriorating health didn't make an immediate connection.

It wasn't until we started questioning the quality of their food that our research led us to the Consumer Affairs website. After reading the endless heartfelt complaints by owners explaining the suffering of their dogs from the newly formulated Canidae, we knew beyond any doubt that our own precious dogs were being, for lack of a better word...poisoned.

After immediately introducing a new food (Natural Balance), their healing and recovery begin within the first 24 hours. Now five weeks out, our boys are back better than ever. Canidae, your lack of integrity and accountability is truly shameful. Why has there been no voluntary recall? Why are you still allowing countless animals to suffer and in some cases die? I would prefer if Canidae kibble would go back to its original formula. I feel formulas should not changed unless consumers are in favor of it FIRST. After all, WE are the ones buying and using the product! We used Canidae lamb/rice dry food for quite some time - our dogs went from smelly fur to clean smelling shiny fur and they loved their food. First I'd like to say I am a veterinary assistant and my dogs are completely healthy so I was disappointed last bag I purchased when I noticed the kibbles were larger and yellower in color and appear WAY more processed - which is NEVER a good thing.

Subsequently all three of my dogs (12-year-old Dalmatian, 4-year-old Pit Bull and my 2-year-old Cattle Dog) have all had very soft smelly yellow stools for 2 months now and the dogs do not seem overjoyed any longer to eat their food. 2 of my dogs developed bad urinary infections which they are currently on antibiotics for - as I said I am a vet assistant and my dogs receive excellent care. My 12-year-old dog lost a considerable amount of weight (a geriatric blood panel was done on him just a few months ago so there is nothing underlining and he does not have worms as he receives Panacur now and then because he also gets raw meat as treats).

We are now out of the Canidae dog food but I don't think I will purchase another bag from Canidae especially since learning many other people have had similar issues. I feel the formula was fine the way it was - customers were happy so why change a good thing? I feel it is NOT the increased protein causing the disgusting stools - as we have began feeding them solely raw meat and their stools have become normal.

OMG, I had not even gotten to more than 1/4 cup when she started experiencing listlessness, vomiting, constant gas and yellowish, foul-smelling, bowel movements about 6-7 times a day (I had been feeding her Paul Newman's Own Organic before) and from what I had read, it was supposed to be better than Newman's so that is why I tried her on it. Princess is a Jack Russell Terrier, and if anybody owns one of these, know that they will eat anything.

Well, this dog got to the point that she would pull out the Canidae from her bowel to eat only the Paul Newman food. I discontinued the Canidae totally and returned her back to Paul Newman's and she is back to her normal self. What I remember about the Diamond plant is that they were the first to be involved with the Petfood problem last year and in 2006. I got my English Bull Terrier from the breeder back in April /08 and she had been feeding Canidae ALS to all her dogs forever. So I just continued to feed it to her when she came here as I knew it was an excellent food! Then one day around the end of July/08 I purchased a new bag as I was out and I get home and opened it and I notice the kibble is bigger and more yellow in color, but the bag appears the same. I thought maybe there was a mix up, so I called the store where I purchased it, and she had no idea why it was different??? She said she would get back to me. A few hours later, she called me back and said, "Oh, I just found out from my supplier that Canidae had changed the formula," so I was thinking, "OH GREAT, and how am I going to transition with only about a cup of food left?"

I checked the bag and it didn't even have any new advertising, or state that it was a NEW formula. VERY SNEAKY INDEED!!! I decided, "Well, it can't be that bad. It's Canidae." I begin feeding her the new food. By the way she was absolutely beautiful and full of life as she is only 1 and has been very well taken care of. Almost IMMEDIATELY, she started vomiting. She had yellow, loose stools, with diarrhea. Every time I took her outside, she would pull me to the grass so she could eat a bunch of it and make herself sick. She had extremely bad gas, and then after about a week of feeding the food, I noticed she was digging herself constantly, scratching, chewing her feet, tail, back, wherever she could reach.

Then in another week, I noticed her hair was falling out in big patches all over her, and she had hard bumps all over her as well, but mostly on her head and face, with rash every where else, along with the vomiting, loose stool, etc. So this was it. I had been feeding it to her for about a month and it was just getting worse, so I decided to contact the company. First time I had to leave a message, but no one EVER got back to me, so I decided to fill out the online web form for complaints or concerns, and then eventually a customer service agent returned my message and had confirmed that they changed the formula, and for me just to continue feeding it to her that she would get better with time - it's just a transitioning period!

Believing yet again in the company I did what they said, and fed for about another month. By this time my dog was hardly moving at all. She just wanted to lay around and sleep. She was pretty much bald and had bigger lumps all over her with blood and pus constantly running out of them from her scratching and she had lost a lot of weight!!!! Does this sound like normal transitioning???? I think NOT!!! I had been putting a topical antibiotic on the lumps on her body to prevent infection and had been bathing her once a week in Canadian Medicated Shampoo as well from the vet, but nothing! So I finally decided to take action.

I sent an email to Canidae and said that they obviously have done more than change the formula as my dog looked as if she was dying (!!!!) at only 1 year old, and she had been healthy as a horse before the change! And that I'd be going to the vet. But during this time, I did switch her to Orijen, grain free, 5 fish formula, which is supposed to be the best food you can get, and it's not cheap, 85 Canadian dollars for only a 30-lb. bag. But I believe I am forced to buy it as I can't trust any reputable dog food companies anymore, and I'm not rich. So thank you Canidae for almost killing my dog!!!!!! Shame on you!

My husband and I fed our 3-year old miniature dachshund, Abby, Canidae Lamb and Rice, dry and canned formulas for nearly two years, and she seemed to do well until recently. She had a history of skin allergies as a puppy while on other pet foods, but cleared up nicely while on the Canidae. That's why we were concerned when we noticed that Abby started increasingly biting at her paws as well as scratching at her eyes and ears last month. A few weeks ago, she developed open sores on two of her back toes from the constant biting and licking. After several trips to the vet and trying antibiotics, anti fungal and antimicrobial sprays, none of them seemed to help. We couldn't imagine that the Canidae was the problem as our vet didn't know of any issues with the brand, and she was eating, drinking and going to the bathroom normally.

Two weeks ago, however, she began having an increasing number of stools, 3-5 x daily, some of them loose and lighter in color. She seemed sluggish during the day and restless at night. She started shaking and throwing up bile in the early morning hours. We even noticed a red tint to her urine on one occasion which really frightened us. Our vet ran a cPL test and diagnosed her with pancreatitis. She has since been on antibiotics and other medications to control her vomiting. We were advised to feed her several small, bland meals of chicken and brown rice until her symptoms alleviated at which point, we could incorporate her regular Canidae diet. After a few days, she seemed to be doing well, so we started to mix in the Canidae. Wouldn't you know that when we began increasing the Canidae, the vomiting started again.

My husband and I have spent hundreds of dollars in vet bills and felt desperate for help, so we decided to look online for more information. We were horrified to find that so many other Canidae users experienced similar problems. Obviously, we discontinued the Canidae immediately. We have since started feeding her Wellness brand canned food and have noticed an unbelievable difference already. Her urine appears normal in color, she is making 1-2 bowel movements daily, and her stool is smaller and firm. She is no longer shaking or vomiting and seems to have more energy.

I used to buy Canidae online and have recently contacted the distributor, petfooddirect.com, for a full refund for my latest order. I have yet to get a response, however, and am somewhat reluctant to send it back for fear that it will be shipped to another unsuspecting dog owner. Cody, my 1 year old boxer, has been on ALS Lamb/Rice formula since he was 10 weeks old with no problems. In August, he started to throw-up a bile colored (with a tinge of blood) liquid every 3-5 days. I also noticed his stools were softer and changed color, consistent with peanut butter. The problem persisted for a couple of weeks. We thought the problem would correct itself, but it didn't. At the time, the shop owner where we buy our Canidae told us there was a slight change in the formula but we didn't think anything of it. I didn't think a slight change in the formula would have that much of an impact in such a short period of time. We took Cody to the vet. Since mid-September we have spent just under a $1000 trying to determine what's causing his loose stools and vomiting.

After medication, fecal smears, blood tests, x-rays, and an endoscopy that revealed mild to moderate irritation in his stomach and the mouth of his intestinal tract, the DVM determined it was one of two things: 1) Parasites; 2) Food allergy. The DVM placed Cody on Hill's Prescription Ultra Allergen Free Z/D diet. We started the transition to Z/D about a week ago. Cody has not vomited since the transition. Now I have to find a new dog food for Cody. I started to research the food allergy theory. I discovered we bought our first bag of the new formula around the same time Cody started to get sick. Then I found this website and found out Cody was not alone. I am convinced the new Canidae formula caused Cody's ailments and will no longer be a Canidae customer.

My 4 year old Boxer was on Canidae ALS dog food. This was the food that her breeder recommended. Since I have had Kendall, I also have recommended Canidae to several friends. Since early SEPT. 08, I have feed Kendall the new formula. I was surprised by the change in appearance and color of the food. I called the pet store where I purchased it. They confirmed it was a new formula and I read the updates posted on the Canidae website. I had recycled the bag already that week, so I could not confirm if the bag noted the change in formula.

Since Kendall had not changed food before, I assumed the loose, yellow, odorous stools were normal when changing dog food. I had only a small amount of the old food left when I opened the new formula food, so I was unable to do the transition as recommended on line. I did add a Canidae dog treat to her food to assist with the transition, and this seemed to help with the consistency of the stools. However, after being on the food for almost 2 months, her stools continue to be soft, yellow, and odorous and she is gassy. She has also vomited a few times lately and has been trying to eat grass frequently. Luckily, she has not had any allergy type symptoms.

I've been feeding my dog Canidae brand lamb and rice kibble for two years with no complaints. I bought a bag recently that was packaged differently and noticed the color of the kibble was different. My dog ate a few bowls but has now stopped eating it. She will go hungry rather than eat it. Also the packaging has changed from heavy paper that was easy to roll up at the end to flimsy plastic that does not roll up. It makes it hard to keep the kibble fresh. I have to switch brands now. The whole reason I sought out a specialty brand like Canidae is because my dog has digestive problems. Now, this brand that I trusted to be consistent has changed and my dog refuses to eat it. I had to throw away one bag of kibble and look for a new brand that my dog will tolerate.

I am a veterinarian researching this site because I had a patient on Canidae develop some issues about a month ago. When I saw the AAFCO statement on the Canidae bag, it raised a red flag for me. It is formulated not tested. What this means is that the food was never fed to actual dogs in a controlled environment to see if it is appropriate for long-term health. It was simply formulated based on calculations of required nutrients. What you are all experiencing are the hazards of feeding an untested food. I will continue to recommend Nature's Best by Science Diet because it is clinically proven by feeding tests and it has no corn, fillers, or by-products.

My dogs have eaten Canidae All Life Stage Formula for several years. I had no idea they had changed their formula and my Basenji/Shepherd mix suddenly started losing weight. My Yellow Lab started having diarrhea and an upset tummy most of the time. He also suddenly started eating dog feces. My Basenji mix went through many vet appointments and had many tests to determine why she was steadily losing weight. On one of those visits I mentioned that I was wondering if Canidae had changed their food and the vet stated that he had other clients who had asked that. I immediately started the process of changing to a new food and within a week the Basenji mix started gaining weight and has more energy than I have seen in her for a long time. The Lab also has way more energy, less tummy problems, and has stopped eating feces.

I wish I had been warned that they were changing their formula so I would have checked that first instead of spending money on unnecessary tests and having sleepless nights worrying about what could be wrong with my dog. I believe there is something more than just a formula change, as my dogs seem to change very easily from one food to another and with the drastic changes I saw in them, there is something very wrong with that food. The company should be shut down and investigated. I had to spend quite a bit of money on vet appointments and tests to find out why my dog was steadily losing weight. This all happened while my husband has been on strike with the machinists union and has been a huge financial hardship.

My Doberman pinscher was put on Canidae All Life Stages approximately 5 months ago after trying 3 other foods which didn't work for her. Finally, I stumbled on this food which worked miracles for her. Her coat was shiny, her stools were normal and her energy was through the roof. One day I opened a new bag of Canidae and noticed that the color was lighter, a different shape and a different smell. I imagined they changed the formula without advertising it on the bag. I fed my dog this formula for 4 days, thinking that her symptoms would get better - i.e. adjusting to the change. Right after the first meal, she had uncontrollable yellow diarrhea which never ceased. She had extremely foul-smelling gas.

In the next few days I noticed her energy level drop. She just laid on the floor during the day. I stopped the food the day after that when I noticed her scratching herself continuously and that her hair from her belly started to fall. I fed her rice for a day or two to settle her stomach then switched her over to Orijen. Right after the first meal of Orijen, the diarrhea was gone. I spoke to customer service at Canidae and they were very defensive. They did not seem to care at all. My dog got very sick. I can't imagine what would have happened if she kept eating that stuff. Canidae says they won’t switch back to their old formula. The lady even said she is surprised at my dog reaction - stated dogs have been doing great on the new formula. All of the sudden, my older female Lab started throwing up about 4-5 hours after eating her food. She gets a cup in the morning and a cup at night. My other Lab has not seen any reactions from the food. So I waited a couple of days, until I reached out to my vet. They told me to bring her in for a checkup. We spent the entire day at the vet. They took X-ray after X-ray to see if my dog has swallowed something. Because we were going out of town, I could not bring her in the following day for more tests. I started feeding her beef/rice mixture and she stopped vomiting.

After a weekend of no longer vomiting, we started her back on to the Canidae dog food. She has started to vomit again. I went to my pet store and asked them what other type of food they recommended and that's when I heard about the formulation changes. I am so angry that my dog had to suffer. I feel that the packaging should of explained that there was a new formulation. We had no idea that there was a change. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Update. We switched our dogs off Canidae cold turkey 4 days ago. We didn't bother with a gradual transition. Not only did our dog's stools return to normal immediately, my male stopped belching, and the one dog that was constantly scratching and chewing on herself stopped that day. But something I had not noticed also corrected itself.

One of my dog's eyes constantly wept and her left eye would from time to time have white tissue protrude from the outside corner around the bottom, pushing her eye back and up in the socket. Of course, I spoke with my vet about this and everyone drew a blank. It was not a cherry eye and would happen repeatedly in a single day. If I applied gentle pressure, it would correct itself. I was preparing her for early spay surgery and asked that her eyes be checked while she was under. My vet thought it might be a growth of some sort putting pressure behind her eye.

THEN prior to her surgery, I switched her food from Canidae to HealthWise and in 48 hours I noticed her face looked markedly different. She looked like she USE to look... only I hadn't noticed the gradual change that had taken place. Her face had been swollen and the protruding tissue was the exposed swelling from around her eye. Because she's a giant breed, I had not noticed the physical change. After the switch in foods was when I noticed she looked like she use too and I asked my boyfriend if he noticed anything different about her. He said, "Her face... It's like her sinuses were swollen and now they aren't."

Can I say for sure it was a reaction to the new Canidae? Not without my vet having treated her... but it is interesting that since I changed her food, the tissue around her eye has not protruded, her eyes aren't constantly weeping and her face isn't swollen any more. So IMO, I believe it was related and she was having a reaction to whatever they have put in their new recipe. And the other issues my dogs were dealing with are also clearing up. My other female dog lives to be in water and never had a problem with it when eating the old Canidae, but on the new Canidae whenever she would get wet, there was some odd reaction between the water and her female parts... She would cry, lick and chew at her private area when she would get out of the pool. Since the change in food, this has also stopped. She again enjoys the pool with no ill effects. They are no longer lethargic, sleeping all the time and they are playing and eating regularly again.

Shame on you Canidae. Shame on you! You did more than add meat and barley and take out the rice. You know you did and so do the rest of us. Why don't you be honest. Too many pets and pet owners are suffering and spending money on unnecessary vet bills for it only to be some barley and more meat. Get real.

Also thought I had been giving my senior-ish pooch a high quality food. New bag opened Oct 2. We were on vacation from Oct 4-12 though caretakers kept him on same (mild) meds for allergies that he's been on for years. This past Saturday, frightening 36-hour episode of vomiting, inappetence, lethargy, and finally bloody diarrhea. Emergency room. He's on bland diet now, appetite returned late Sunday, out of the woods, I hope. This canNOT be simply a formula change, too many violently averse reactions. So I throw ours into the mix, in hopes anybody investigating Canidae as a new food for their dogs will approach such a switch cautiously and forewarned. $330 in vet bills so far but more importantly an inflamed gastrointestinal tract in our dog that caused him considerable pain and misery.

Enterococcus infection can cause complicated abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, urinary tract infections and infections of the blood stream. E. faecium is known to have a resistance to several types of antibiotics including quinolones and aminoglycosides. Resistance to penicillin was first observed in E. faecium in 1983, and in 1988 the first cases of resistance to the antibiotic of last resort, vancomycin, were detected in Europe. Resistance to several antibiotics and tolerance for adverse conditions makes E. faecium a major concern for the medical community, which has dubbed this microbe a supergerm.

Canidae changed the ingredients of their dog food but did not inform the public. I had heard through pet forums that Canidae was the food to feed. I had a new pup and wanted to give her the very best I could afford. After much research, Canidae was the food I selected. After I started her on the old recipe, I adopted two more dogs. So all in all I have 3 Newfoundlands and my boyfriend also has three Newfoundlands. I got him turned on to Canidae so we would be feeding all our dogs the same thing. Our dogs were doing so well on the old Canidae that he told two co-workers about it and they decided to try it for their dogs. And so by word of mouth alone, Canidae was sweeping our area.

Then the switcheroo with no heads up. Which I find offensive that Canidae didn't even bother to put on their bag "New and Improved Recipe!" Unless they knew it was not an improvement. And they switched manufacturers, raised the price and lower the size of the bags! Were they hoping we wouldn't notice? My extremely well housebroken dogs began to have accidents in the house with loose stools and a weeks’ worth of belly troubles. I had no idea what was going on... and decided to ride it out and if things got worse. I would have to take them to the vet. From reading other complaints, I consider myself lucky. At least I had no vomit to deal with along with the loose stools. Then one dog began constantly scratching, her ears, her belly and chewing on her legs and feet. I now realize this too is because of the new Canidae recipe. She didn't have this problem prior to their change.

My boyfriend took his older dog into the vet because of her chewing and losing hair to find out she now has an "allergy". We assume to the new recipe because like my girl, she did not have this problem before. Her skin is waxy and she has lost almost all of the hair on her belly. When I contacted Canidae personally by phone and by email both times, I was told some dogs would have a little trouble with the new recipe but VERY few. That they have hundreds of very happy customers and sales have only gone up since the changes. And basically it's not their food, but more my dogs.

However, I just spent the entire afternoon researching foods driving around to four different natural pet food store and none Canidae for sale any more. They all said the complaints were across the board. All I can say though is my dogs MUST have caught on about the switcheroo before I did, because slowly, they stopped eating it. Now one of my dogs won't eat it at all. Which is fine because we are switching foods today.

Well, after 6 months or so of trying out other dog foods, I really wasn't satisfied with any of them, so I went back and placed an order for Canidae ALS not even knowing they changed the formula until two days after I placed the order. It wasn't marked anywhere on the website I order from that the formula had been changed. Not that that would have stopped me from ordering it again. I read all the bad reviews for this new formula and just kinda figured everyone's dogs were having these reactions because their dogs are not used to a change in dog foods.

Well, I had my dog on about 5 different types of dog food these last 6 months with absolutely no problems making the transition between them. That's not the case with this Canidae CRAP. I think that it's safe to say that all of the frustrated people who have entered these complaints would agree that we will NEVER be so trusting of a company that produces food for our beloved pets. EVER. I had Canidae on the highest of pedestals. I based this on them making a food that seemed to work for everyone regardless of how sensitive their pet might be. I would even go as far as saying that their food was OUTSTANDING.

What blows me away is this... after all the clamoring from so many people with identical symptoms, people that have spent hundreds of dollars in vet bills, plus countless hours of worry and heartache, how can this company not admit that they made a mistake? Instead the fault is turned on the customer for not being able to read their minds and on the uninformed retailers for not getting the word out which simply adds insult to injury. There are many examples of transition from the old to the new that still went badly. And, not all dog foods are for every dog, but their old formula seemed to be! Every time I try to talk to the people at Canidae I only get the standard, scripted insults.

Finally my point: Not long ago, I bought an edible bone treat from a company that caused my dog to have the runs for 2 days and once it was out of her system she was fine. I called the company, being sure that it was their product that caused all of the mess, just to let them know about the reaction my dog had. The person I spoke with was speaking to me pleasantly and personally and very sympathetically. She asked me questions and finally stated that on rare occasions, certain sensitive dogs react this way to their product. She then told me that she would be happy to send me a refund. I told her that I no longer had the receipt or the package and that I was not calling for compensation. I thanked her for her time. In a couple of weeks I received a large package filled with dog toys, bathing and grooming products and treats for sensitive tummies. Amazing! That, Canidae, is customer service.

During this time, my dogs have thrived beautifully with very little health problems and beautiful coats. About 2 months ago, the Canidae Dog Food Company began distributing a new formula of dog food to their retailers. I had received an email from a friend describing the new formula of food but truthfully, many emails are bogus and I could not imagine that Canidae would switch formulas when they had so many loyal customers.

In August, I bought a new bag of food, and when I opened it up, the kibble looked and smelled totally different. I was sure that the rumor was true about the food change. I had no time to transition my dogs to the new formula since the new food was packaged the exact same way as the original formula. Who knew that this was the new formula except the ingredients were different. I was a member of the breeder program so Canidae did have my address and email information. I began to feed my dogs the new Canidae formula, and after their second feeding, they became quite sick. My three Belgians had very loose yellow stools. The stools were soft and like a yellow pudding. Prior to the change, my dogs never had any problem with loose stools. I added rice and potato to the food and removed any cooked food that I normally added to the kibble. The dogs became extremely sick and had to be treated with antibiotics to calm their intestinal tract.

I now found myself at the mercy of the dog food company. I immediately called Canidae and they said I should have transitioned. I told them there was no way to know when the new food was going to be packaged. I told Canidae that I was quite annoyed with their new product that they claim is better. Several of my friend's dogs had the same occurrences. My dogs are long haired and you can only imagine the mess besides the sore stomachs of my canines. This all occurred right before my wedding and was a total inconvenience. I have since switched my dogs to Eagle Pack Holistic and they are doing terrific. I would never use another Canidae product. I feel very violated and feel that Canidae misrepresented their product. What a way to lose loyal customers.

I am writing in response to the numerous amounts of complaints against Canidae's new formula change. I work in the pet food industry myself, and while I too was not aware that the formula change was going to happen, I am not surprised that it did. A lot of companies are coming across the same problems that Canidae had. I understand your frustration with Canidae. I too believe that they should have given more warning than what we received. And it's also true that several dogs are going to be intolerable to the new changes that they made to the food. And some of what you're experiencing could be just transitional problems too.

But honestly... for those of you who write that you 'noticed a change in the bag, the price, and color of the food, but just assumed that there was nothing wrong with it because you trusted the company', are you crazy? A responsible pet owner, or consumer for that matter, should always always always follow guy instinct. If something looks different, it probably is. We should all feel like we can trust who we buy our pet's food, or our own food, or even our children's toys. But we can't. I think that watching the news over the last several years will prove that standards are lower in some companies and countries than others.

Always do your research. Always trust your instincts.

My older cocker spaniel and young lab have been eating Canidae dry food for over two years with wonderful results; however, they both have developed problems. My cocker spaniel has developed severe itching and hot spots, and the lab has become very gassy. I discovered this website while trying to look at the ingredients in Canidae's Lamb and Rice formula to see if that might help my cocker spaniel. Without this site, I would never have related both problems to the change in their food. I now have a lot of research to do to decide what to feed them, but their diet changes today.

I hope Canidae will change back to their original formula. Many people changed their dog's food based on my growing recommendations of Canidae's original formula. I will be letting my supplier know that I am changing so they don't get stuck with excess inventory, and I will let the people I convinced to use Canidae to be aware of changes in their dog's health. Thanks again for making this site available.

I regularly mix canned dog food into my dog's kibble. After many recommendations from other dog owners, I tried Canidae canned dog food. After a few days, I noticed that my dog's stools were becoming loose. After a few more days, the stools began to have mucous in them. I stopped the Canidae and started mixing Instinct canned food into the kibble instead. After a short while, his stools became normal again. I thought maybe it was some sort of stomach flu that had gone away. I had quite a few cans of Candidae, so I began using it again. He immediately had loose, mucous filled stools so I stopped the Canidae. He is back on Instinct and appears to be doing fine.

After Canidae made a very discreet formula change to my dog's kibble, he immediately began to get very gassy & had VERY loose bowel movements that would not go away. It was not until I changed brands that Zephyr started to have regular bowel movements again. At the same time, the company decreased the size of the bags, but did not change the price... I feel like we got ripped off twice. I think Canidae owes its customers more than a deep apology - but some money for vet bills & for time spent scraping diarrhea off the grass & carpets of their consumer's homes and yards. Whoever's idea it was to change the formula should be fired; if it's not broken don't fix it.

I WAS so happy with this food... and fed it for a great number of years & referred it to adopters within my rescue organization and to other members of the dog show community... I am now disgusted with this company and cannot believe the utter lack of compassion & business savvy. Shame on them. They will certainly lose more than money on this stupid decision. They have lost their reputation.

I adopted my very healthy dog (at the age of three) a year and two months ago. I was feeding her Canidae dog food for the duration. She always was in perfect health, with firm stools and a strong stomach. Starting in August, Canidae changed the formula, and later to find out, the manufacturer of their dog food. I didn't notice a change in the packaging, so I bought the food as I normally do. I brought the food home and noticed that it was a different shape and texture. I contacted Canidae and they told me that they increased the protein content of the food and ii would take some time for my dog to get used to it. I thought it strange, but would give it a chance.

I didn't have the opportunity of switching out gradually b/c I had no warning about the change and couldn't procure a bag of the old food. This persisted for over a month and I switched to a different brand. Still had loose stool and bad diarrhea. This had never happened before. I have incurred over a thousand dollars in vet bills. The vet thought it might be worms (although I treat with a preventative) and I, thinking that might have been it, went back to the Canidae. Still bad, bad smelly diarrhea and bad itching and digging at her back and tummy. Red spots on tummy after she eats.

I finally realized that it is the food after reading one after another complaint with dogs with similar symptoms. She even had and was treated for an anal abscess b/c her stools were so loose she wasn't clearing her anal glands, not usually a problem for her breed. I am so so so upset that I trusted Canidae and should have went with my instincts and switched off the food from the start. The reason I didn't is that I was afraid that I wouldn't find the source of the problem if I made too many changes to her habits and diet at once. It was the food all along. And Canidae had the incredible nerve to not tell me when I emailed them that they switched to the manufacturer Diamond.

I would never, never, never buy a dog food from a manufacturer with so many known issues. As a matter of fact, that is why I chose Canidae in the first place. It was rated A+ and safe and local. I am so angry and am telling everyone not to buy Canidae. Today, when I went to my local dog store to report this, there were two other customers there with the same complaint. At the vet today (where I am back for yet another fecal recheck) one client's dog had diarrhea and vomiting and their dog eats Canidae. I am so angry. I want my vet bills back. I want my dog's intestines to be healthy again. I want Canidae to be punished. I will tell everyone I know and there is no doubt in my mind that they are negligent and I will sue.

I am a breeder and have had all my dogs and new puppy families on Canidae ALS for years and years. We were all very happy. Being a breeder and part of Canidae's breeding program where they supply me with free food and puppy packs to send home with the puppies. I was very upset that they never told me of the formula change and only changed the bag and added the formula change information to their website AFTER getting loads of complaints of sick pets. I’ve talked with tons of families and they definitely put the new formula in the old bags and didn’t even put a sticker on the bag letting people know it was a different formula.

My 2 litters at the time had non-stop runs for 10 weeks and i spent a lot of money on vet ills, medication and fecal exams to rule out worms and parasites. My adults were also having vomiting and the runs, but i never could figure out why... finally a friend talked me into switching foods claiming that the food she feeds gives the pups hard stools no matter what and instantly the pups had firm stools. Still i didn’t think it was the Canidae that I trusted completely until someone sent me a link to this website. After investigating several brands I decided on a new high-end brand and will no longer use or refer anyone to Canidae.

I have fed Canidae chicken & rice for the last two years and was very happy with how my 5 cocker spaniels did on it, not to mention the price was very reasonable. My dogs range in age from 11 1/2 years to 2 1/2 years. I noticed about two months ago, when after purchasing a new bag that the color was more yellow, but didn't think anything of it, as I totally trusted the company. Within hours my dogs developed gas and very soft, bright yellow stools. Several of them vomited a bile-colored liquid over the course of the next few days.

Concerned, I contacted the company, and a young woman said that they had changed the formula, and if my dogs were experiencing soft stools to mix water into the food and/or add some cooked rice to the food. If I wanted to cook for my dogs I would- isn't why we feed packaged food for the convenience?? Funny thing is - our 11 1/2 year old has always had to have his food ground & mixed with enough water to make a slurry as he has mega-esophagus, and had and still does, have the softest stools of any of them. So, I switched to the ALS formula of Canidae, the results are a little better, not much. I am thoroughly disgusted with the company for their lack of any notice on the food bags that there was a change in the formula, and for the increased cost for an obviously inferior new formula.

Thankfully my dogs have not developed any deadly effects - YET. I am returning the food and will switch to Nutripet or Innova.

I'd switched Canidae ALS food for my Cavalier after consulting with an independent site that evaluated dog foods. Our previous brand got only a C+ while Canidae received an A+. I didn't care about the extra cost, only if it would benefit my dog. My dog has been eating the previous formula of Canidae for about 2 and 1/2 years with superior results. Her coat with the old formula was glossy and full. When I purchased the new bag of Canidae ALS, I noticed that appearance of the bag had changed, but didn't really think that the quality had changed.

I was first alerted to the formula change by a Cavalier website. Thank goodness they did inform me, but what of Canidae? They gave no notice that the ingredients weren't the same. When I called the company, I got a very polite person who stated that the new formula is improved, and they'd never compromise the dogs. Well, comparing the ingredients, from the old bag to the new, the fat content has increased. I learned when comparing pet food ingredients that fat content is what is done to appeal to the animal, but it negatively affects the animal. While all animals need some fat in their diet, they don't need the amount that is in the 'improved' Canidae.

I was told by the company spokesperson that the problems that people are having with the new Canidae are the result of bad press from other people hoping to smear Canidae. I seriously doubt that there'd be 51 pages of reports of bad effects with feeding dogs the new Canidae. In reading of all the reports, there were only 2 or 3 that were happy with the new formulation of Canidae. And if the new formulation of Canidae was so good, why didn't the company inform the buying public of this change?

Finally, if this is indeed a conspiracy, why did everyone that had dogs negatively impacted not promote one brand? Wouldn't it make sense that someone promoting another brand would stick to that one brand? I find it sad that this company in an obvious attempt to make their food cheaper to manufacture, has made dogs ill or die. I'm thankful that I still have half a bag of the old formula Canidae to transition to a new brand of dog food where hopefully the makers will have more morals.

My dogs are doing just fine on the new formula, and I was perfectly happy with the company's change. When I found out that there was a new formula, I asked my boss who is friends with a Canidae rep, and she said that her friend had made sure to let her know about the change. I went to the website, and found all the information on the new food, and was happy with what I saw. I was a little upset about the change in bag size, especially because the cost of the food has gone up so much (we used to get a 40 lb bag for $28!), but I have always had good results with their food, so I figured I'd deal with it. My dogs are still doing fine after two full new bags, and my bosses dogs are doing very well too. Both of us noticed increased palatability in our picky eaters as well.

The following days my other sheltie got sick same thing. Couldn't get him over it and went to the vet again, $300.00 vet bill. Vet and I suspected the food change, especially finding all over the internet and many many retail stores receiving complaints with the same symptoms. There is no denying it, all these dogs were sick from the food.

I have a third sheltie, not Canidae and he was and is fine. Never got sick!!!! More proof. I strongly feel Canidae should settle with all the families, whose dogs got so sick from the new formula. My dogs did not need to suffer like that, I certainly did not need a $500.00 vet bill because Canidae decided to change the formula without a warning on the new product. Even if they did, I strongly feel there is something wrong with the food. However about a week into this new food he started to have soft stools. A few days after that he vomited yellow bile. I did some research and discovered that Canidae changed the formula of their food. According to their website the change they made doesn't appear to be negative. Thus I continued to feed him the food.

Now, about three weeks into it, he continues to have soft stools, a lot of gas, always acts famished and now he vomited up the food. This is the last straw. There has to be something ELSE that is different about the food besides what the company claims to have changed. Why else would there be such negative results? I did email the company to notify them that my four-year-old dog is now experiencing negative consequences from eating their food. A statement from Canidae:

We apologize to all who have voiced their concerns with our new formulation. Canidae distributed letters to retailers, breeders, updated packaging, and provided in-store signage, however it appears that this message did not reach all of our customers.

The new formulation, with increased levels of meat protein, lowered carbohydrates, and an increased overall complex carbohydrate quality, provides the most nutritious, all natural, palatable products. Canidae never uses soy, corn, wheat, by-products, grain fractions, or fillers in our food.

If you believe your pet has experienced challenges related to the new formula we suggest feeding smaller portions multiple times a day. Adding warm water can decrease the chance of pets eating too quickly and not chewing thoroughly. Its not unusual for pets to experience some digestive issues when transitioning, but if your problems persist, contact your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health concerns. For more tips, visit canidae.com/transitioningfromorig.html.

Due to increased commodity costs, weve changed our packaging sizes, reducing the overall weight by approximately 3-5 pounds per bag. The new sizes are more consistent with other brands and allow for easier handling.

I switched my 2 year old dog to Canadae several months ago (from another brand of food). The dog did very well on the first bag. I was happy with it, the dog liked it. When I bought the second bag, I noticed the food looked different, lighter in color. I didn't think much about it but shortly after eating from the new bag the dogs stools got progressively soft, then mushy, very yellow in color and shortly developed explosive diarrhea. He had awful flatus. He also seemed to be eating a lot of grass and drinking too much water.

In the morning he would wake me up (he sleeps in the bedroom with the door closed) and really run to the water bowl and drink huge amounts. I took him to the vet. The vet thought he must have eaten something he shouldn't have, like garbage. But I never saw him near the garbage. He was put on antibiotics and anti-diarrea medication. His stools got a little better.

After the medication ran out he became worse again and then started scratching non stop head to tail and chewing on his legs and feet. Another trip to the vet. This time the vet thought he had possibly colitis and allergies. He received a prednisone shot. The doctor said if it was colitis it should improve with the prednisone. There was very little improvement. I could not pick up any of stool with a ****** *******, it was so bad. I decided to change dog food just in case he was allergic to something in the food. This dog never had allergies before (but I know they can develop at any time).

I changed brands, switched to Merrick Wilderness Blend. The dog began to improve quickly. He stopped scratching and itching, his stools are normal, he's back to his old self. I did not know about the switch of formula by Canadae until I heard about the problems dogs were having on an email list. The problems were the same as my dog had. I just thought he was having problems with the food, not that the food was making many dogs sick. This is unacceptable.

I had two vet trips costing me over $300. My dog was very sick and I was afraid to leave him alone for any length of time because of the loose stools. He was lethargic. I have no doubt in my mind that he would have continuted to be sick and would have been going to the vet trying to help him get better, had I not changed his diet to another brand of food. I hope that the company finds out what the problem is with this dog food.

We had been feeding our dogs Canidae for all life stages for approx. 2 1/2 years with no problems. About Mid July our older dog (10yrs old) began having severe gastrol problems, vomiting and horrible stools. We took her the the local animal hospital were told that she was severly dehytrated and needed to be hopitalized for re-hydraytion. At the same time our daughter-in-law called us and told us about the formula change for Canidae and their merger with Diamond. She warned that she had read several horror stories about dogs with the same symptoms that Sadie had and urged us to change their dog food to Innova.

Within two weeks we had weined both of our dogs off of Canidae and for Zoey we were in time for her health but for Sadie it was too late and the damage to her kidneys was fatal. We believe that the new formula was too rich for her digestive system and she developed renal failure from vomiting and severe diahrrea....the vet that treated her would not confirm our theory but gave it a lot of weight and suggested we file a report with Consumer Affairs. In spite of spending almost $2,000 to save our pet we lost a beloved member of the family.

I think it was completley irresponsible of Canidae to make such a signifigant change to their food without informing it's customers thereby, giving them a chance to make an informed decision about whether they wanted to continue to use this product. I read about the change in food and I was lucky (I thought) that I still had two large bags of the old dog food. I have four labs and one weimeraner. I started with mixing 1/4 new to 3/4 old dog food. Right from the start ALL the dogs started getting watery stools. Soon the stools were the worst form of diarrhea with ALL the dogs. I kepted thinking it would change and it did not.

After four weeks, things getting worse even with the slow transition, I decided enough of this. The most I got to was 1/2 to 1/2. I could not put my dogs thru this anymore. I can only image what would have happened if I went to all the new formula. Four weeks is more then enough time for the so called transition of the dog food.

I had talked to someone at Canidae when I heard about the change. I got the song and dance about how great this new formula is and would be so much better. I loved the old formula that is why I tried to stick it out. As I said after FOUR weeks I never got to feeding them all the new formula. People, this formula is BAD, the transition does not work. To have such fast results from terrible diarrhea that had this aweful color and smell to normal poops it two days just by switching dogs foods tells me that there is a major problem with the food. For three weeks, beginning around Labor Day weekend, he had disgusting loose stools, a bit of vomitting, and a terrible lack of energy. He even developed a sinus infection and had to go on antibiotics. We thought that the symptoms were caused by the sickness, but now think it was likely all caused by the Canidae!

After three weeks of constant vet visits and cleaning up digusting stools from the back yard, gross nasal discharge, and stumbling upon this website, we swtiched him to Wellness Super 5 Mix. He made an IMMEDIATE recovery. His stools became normal again, his sinus issues went away, and he has the energy of a normal puppy now, instead of just sleeping all the time!

I think Canidae should be held responsible for the vet bills and replacing the food - I had to throw away an almost full 35 lb bag of food because I simply could not risk killing my dog to save money! I'm annoyed with Canidae and action should be taken against this company for not giving appropriate warnings and for the impact this has clearly had on so many dogs! I asked my pet food store and they said they were not informed of the formula change and when they called Canidae, they were told there was no change. EVENTUALLY on a later call to the manufacturer, they admitted there was a change! How irresponsible for a company to do this! I will NEVER buy Canidae again. They're obviously more concerned about their bottom line than providing a high-quality product and at what expense??? Dogs are CLEARLY getting very sick on this food and they don't care! How disgusting! It's unacceptable!

I researched dog foods and ingredients to a great extent before choosing Canidae three years ago for my two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I was very pleased to feed such a high-quality food to my dogs, and I evangelized to every dog owner I knew the virtues of Canidae and many of them began feeding it. The company seemed to do everything right and to truly be ethical and focused on the quality of the food and maximizing dogs' health.

I think I speak for most of the Canidae customers I know when I say that I would gladly have paid more for the original formula All Life Stanges if it had become necessary for the company to charge more to cover increased costs. A very honest letter to customers, or at least retailers, explaining the need for that would have played out MUCH better than an integrity-compromising quick switch to arguably cheaper/lower value ingredients. That would perhaps have permitted me to still have faith Canidae and to continue to my dogs.

I became aware of the switch fairly quickly, and was able to switch to a different brand before having to subject my dog to potential bad effects. Whether or not the new food is lower quality or causing problems is not even the main issue to me. The primary issue, the egregious thing, is the underhanded, sneaky in my opinion, way that Canidae made this quick change. They were definitely not forthcoming or honest about it. And anyone who is the least bit knowledgeable about dog nutrition knows that even if you are switching your dog to the best food in the world, you must make a gradual switch to the new food or you will most likely cause upset to your dog's digestive system. By being so covert about the change, and so quickly replacing the old one, Canidae made it virtually impossible for most dog owners to switch over to the new food in the gradual way that is proper and healthy.

Regardless of whether the new food will continue to cause issues or not, the way this all was handled is enough. I no longer trust or respect Canidae and I can no longer recommend their products to my friends for their dogs. I am very sad and disappointed that Canidae chose this way to conduct their business.

I learned that Canidae changed their All Life Stages dry dog food formula without notifying the public. I understand they outsourced manufacturing of the product to Diamond. Since then my 2 Shetland Sheepdogs have been experiencing vomiting, loose stools, and now both have severe itching on their bodies, mostly on their paws. Canidae was negligent in not informing the public of a change to their dog food formula.

One dog had to be treated by our vet for intestinal upset. Shot of Pepcid and shot of fluids so he won't become dehydrated due to excessive vomiting. Needed to get X-rays done to determine if anything was physically wrong. Xrays were negative.

    Total cost $400.

I own an independent retail shop in Phoenix. We carry Canidae in our store because our customers loved the product. Then they change manufacturers (which I just learned today) and changed the formula. I need to say that Canidae never wrote, sent, emailed, or called the store with any information about the changes. No shelf talkers or customer information were given to the store. We were told by the distributor after the fact that they had changed the formula by adding Barley. Which is a common dog food ingredient. Though some dogs can be allergic to it.

The claim in the letter above from Canidae is not completely true, at least not for our store. I am so saddend to hear my customers tell me how sick their dogs have been since they opened the new improved bag of food. I hope those dogs affected by the change can find a new natural pet food and get well soon.

I switched to Canidae shortly before the pet food problems awhile back. First I fed Canidae Platinum to our two dogs, ages 10 and 9 at that time. When we got a new puppy last year, I switched to All Life Stages for all three dogs. All of them have done really well on it, and my puppy, a show collie, has a really fantastic coat.

However, the pet store where I buy my food recently removed Canidae from their shelves after their own dog and the dogs of several clients who also fed Canidae nearly died after experiencing many of the same symptoms others have complained of here. Maybe it's not the food, but I am switching to Eagle Pack (which is pretty much like the old Canidae formula) until something definitive comes out of all this. There are too many similarities between the complaints for me to be comfortable continuing to feed Canidae at present. It looks like most of the problems started after they modified their formula a couple of months ago. Maybe that's the problem.

I returned the food and the pet store had ONE bag of the old formula so I bought it! Within two days, the gas had stopped and gradually his stool has returned to normal. I am searching for a new brand. I called and spoke with a rep at Canidae and she told me that they had had complaints like this from other customers and that they were looking into adding an enzyme to help prevent this. I just wish they had kept making the old formula. I will not buy Canidae once this bag is gone.

I had complete faith in Canidae & always promoted it as a great food made by a company with integrity...Not anymore.

I will NEVER feed Canidae again but I did keep 1/2 a bag of the new formula in case it is found there is something wrong with the food...Which I strongly suspect. Shame on Canidae for selling out on us & our beloved fur friends.

Ive been feeding Canidae to my 4 dogs for approximately 3 years. Several weeks ago, I purchased a bag of ALS from my local feed store as I usually do. I was advised by the clerk that Canidae changed the formula and the bag size now I can buy 35 lbs for the price I used to buy 40 lbs. I really wasnt happy about that and the fact that there was no advance notice provided by Canidae so I could gradually change over the foods, but I went ahead and bought it anyway. I trusted Canidae.

Shortly after I started feeding my kids ALS new formula (2x per day), two of my dogs developed yellow, VERY stinky, loose stools and diarrhea. I thought that it would eventually clear up as they adjusted to the new formula, but that never happened. Instead, these same two dogs also started waking up in the middle of the night vomiting. This went on for several weeks. Unfortunately, it didnt even dawn on me that the new formula could be causing these changes, until I found a kernel of corn mixed in with the ALS new formula. Now, how could that be, I thought. This is supposed to be a no corn formula.

This drove me to doing research on the internet, where I found many, many dogs have issues with the new formula. And I read about the outsourcing to Diamond.. probably producing Canidae right next to a line of food that contains corn. I am a volunteer with Cairn Terrier rescue and have been very loyal to Canidae. I cant tell you how many times, especially during all the dog food recalls, that I have recommended people to feed their dogs Canidae. Again, I trusted Canidae. Now, many of them, as do I, are feeding other foods.

The Canidae was thrown out and my dogs are now eating Blue Buffalo. Their stools look great and the vomiting immediately ceased. Yes, Im paying a little more, but am getting a true quality product for my money. Why Canidae fixed what wasnt broke, Ill never know. I feel betrayed and let down by Canidae. A real shame.

I have a yellow lab who has a sensitive tummy. I researched and tried many different dog foods for my lab, and his body seemed to fit perfectly with Canidae dog food. For two years, his fur was silky, he didn't have bad breath, and his stools were absolutely normal. I was very happy with the food that is until the new and not improved dog food.

Sadly, I bought the food thinking everything was normal until I opened the bag. I noticed the food was larger in size had more of a yellow color. I was confused, but I was stupid and thought nothing of it because the bag was exactly the same. The bag did not have a sticker indicating the new change in formula. I gave my lab the food, and I noticed he started to eat extremely fast. My dog would never touch his breakfast until I was sitting down and I was eating my breakfast. I also noticed he wanted more and more of the food. So I increased his food by a half cup, but that still didn't seem to fill him up. I noticed that he started to have gas and bad breath, which he never had before. He had loose, yellow stools, and went more frequently than normal. He started to want to eat grass, which he never did before.

Finally, my brain figured out that the food had to be the issue because that was the only change in our routine. I went to my favorite pet store, and they informed me that indeed Canidae did change the formula to save money because like everything in our economy things are getting more expensive to produce. This made me so angry and sad, because I love my dog and I would have happily paid for the increase in production price, but unfortunately I and the rest of the consumers of Canidae didn't have that option. They chose to go the cheap way and instead they have lost my business and I hope many many more consumers. I am now slowly switching my dog to a different dog food, that is twice the price of Canidae which I am happy to pay. I hope this new food will work for my dog.

After running low on my last bag of Canidae All Life Stages I went to the store to get another bag. I was a bit confused as the weights seemed to have changed and the package was a little brighter in color. Well, this prompted me to check out Canidae's web site to see what they had to say. That is when I learned about the new formula and after a little research I found an amazingly large amount of complaints. I also learned that Canidae recommend that I mix my old food with the new to aid in the transition from the old to the new. Well, that presented another problem since there was no old formula food left to mix with. Not only that, but the new bag that I purchased mentioned nothing about the transition and mixing the old and new together.

Well, after seeing so many negative comments and having already opened the new bag with no other alternative, I thought I'd give Canidae the benefit of the doubt and at least try it out. My dog didn't seem to get the runny stools that others have experienced (at least I didn't notice since we live in the woods) but I did notice an overall lack of energy and enthusiasm from my dog. I felt that I would stick it out at least for a couple weeks and see how she would do on the new formula. She started to get her energy back after a week or so but then began to lose clumps of fur and lost her shiny coat.

I decided to do a little more research and ended up on this site. After seeing the problems everyone here has had and the way that Canidae has treated their customers I am done with them. What a shame as I was so happy with the quality of the old formula and wholeheartedly recommended Canidae to everyone I knew that had dogs. Now it's back to the drawing board to find a suitable replacement food. I am quite disappointed.

Monetarily I am out a half eaten bag of food and the 'free' bag I would have received after purchasing my twelfth bag. Not to mention having to constantly vacuum my house and brush my dog and wonder if she would improve on the new formula after a couple of weeks transition time.

We have had our Siberian Husky puppy for 5 months and have been feeding her CANIDAE ALS dry dog food since we got her because that is what her breeder fed all of their dogs and she seemed to like it pretty well. Last month, after feeding her the old formula for over 2 months, we purchased our first bag of the NEW formula CANIDAE ALS and have had problems ever since despite gradually mixing in the new formula with the older formula. Of the problems we experienced, the very loose stool and coat changes were the most disturbing.

At first, her stool was just really mushy and yellow and she was having noticably more gas. Then it started becoming liquid, yellow diarrhea 3-4 times a day with maybe a mushy, yellow stool one time a day. She also started eating less and drinking a ton of water. Both my husband and I thought that maybe she was just drinking too much water and that over-hydration might have been the cause for her diarrhea. It never really occured to me that she wasn't tolerating the food and that all of our problems were related to this new formula change until today, when I heard her howling and found that she had an accident in her kennel and that there was diarrhea all over. She has NEVER done that before and only then did it occur to me that all of these problems started about a month ago when she started eating the new formula.

Historically, Siberian Huskies don't eat a lot for their size so I suppose that is why I wasn't too worried about her intake amount, but the loose, watery stool has had me worried for awhile and I was about ready to take her to the vet when I read about all of these similiar issues regarding the food. Now, I am convinced that this is the cause and immediately switched her to a bag of puppy food my vet had given me at our first visit. Not only did she devour this food the instant it hit her bowl a few minutes ago, something she had NEVER done with the new formula, she also didn't spend 5 minutes at the water dish.

I also mentioned her coat problems and after reading about other people's experiences I am feeling really stupid that I didn't connect the dots sooner. Around the same time of the formula switch her coat started looking greasy and ratty. Before, it had always been really soft and silky with no hint of this greasiness and coarseness that we were now seeing. Being a first time Husky owner I thought that maybe this was just how their coat looked when they were shedding in the summer so I tried to make it look better with regular baths, conditioning treatments, and brushings. Nothing worked and now, as I read about everyone elses experiences, it makes perfect sense that this all started at the same time as the formula change.

I am very upset about the consequences my 5 month old puppy had to endure until I woke up and finally realized what was going on. I am glad I didn't spend an additional $100 at the vet trying to find a cause for all of these problems. I knew it probably wasn't due to intestinal worms since we had just had a negative intestinal worm test (standard puppy procedure for first time visits to a new vet and she had been on a heart worm medicine that had a de-wormer in it) done right before we started feeding the new formula CANIDAE. So, being stupid, I just thought maybe she was just drinking too much water.

So we not only had emotional and physical consequences but also economic despite not having a vet bill. Since it cost over $40 for the bag and of course, I bought the biggest bag, and beacuse she wasn't eating very much I still have about half the bag left and no way to be reimbursed for it since I store the food in an air-tight bin and don't keep the bag or the receipt.

I explained to her that one of my GSDs has EPI & has done very well on ALS for 3 years. She assured me this new formula was better & even suggested I try the Platinum formula for my EPI girl. Sent me a coupon & I ordered it from my dealer. Haven't tried it yet & will return it for a refund. Not taking any more chances.

I DID the change over, all dog/cat people know that for Petes sake. What an insult that is. Also, my dealer was NOT notified the change.

I have been feeding ALS to both of my GSDs for 3 years & had been more than happy with it. More than a few have used it also & now are having some major problems with this new stuff.

Now I have a EPI dog who is reacting to the feed after only 4 feedings. My male, who is very healthy, has refused his meals twice in the last week. This is a dog who inhales his food & lives for meal time.

Both dogs have gas & tummy pain with soft yellow stools. What could this be??? Of course it's the new & Improved Canidae! I'm not a happy camper at all.

We EPIer's have enough to deal with without having to find yet another food to feed our dogs.

I have contacted all my friends/family who have fed ALS for years & advised them to stop NOW! BTW, several of these folk are breeders.

When I asked why fix something that isn't broke I was told you never advance without change. That may be true in most cases but not in this one for sure.

Shame on you Canidae & I hope you go out of business! You've lost at least 100 dogs that I know of myself.

Ecomomic damages are nill as I SHOULD get a full refund. I'm not here to ask for money. I just want to tell folk what Canidae is doing to our furbabies.

Physical damages: Who knows with my EPI girl at this point? I pray I stopped it in enough time to prevent further damage to her system.

We again as everyone else here were not aware that the formula changed. My 16 month old puppy has experienced in the last month, severe itching to the point that she has missing fur, vomiting the yellow frothy mess and her fur is not soft - feels greasy and rough and the yellow, stinky mushy ****.

After reading the other dog owners results, Canidae should again make sure that the ingredients are safe and the manufacturing plant is safe. Please don't ignore the signs...there are too many and something is not right. If you care so much about pets, don't ignore this.

I just took my dog to the vet last night, so my expense has been minimal compared to the others, but after $79 dollars at the vet and over 1/2 a $40 dollar bag of food left, I'm going to immediately remove her from eating Canidae today.

Now I find that many others have registered concerns.

This company needs to get right with its loyal customers. Many report that if they in fact did get a response, the company representative was rude and condescending. They suggest that people may be making the mistake of taking the food from its original bag and storing it in a fashion that somehow compromises freshness/safety. It's hard to believe that so many would do that. Indeed, most report consequences with the animal within the first few feedings when the product was new and just out of the bag, so this suggestion is ludicrous. Workers at the local pet store confirm reports of many complaints. Luckily, my Scottie has about 1 pound of the old Canidae remaining and we've already proactively purchased another brand.

I have already made a complaint on 8/31/08. However, I would like to make another as I have had further trouble with the new formula dog food.

I decided to give the food a chance instead of switching because of the diarrhea and vomiting from the first bag. I fed three more bags (11 dogs ate from these) and the stool did firm up for some and for others there would be some days with firm stool of a light color and some days a soft sticky stool. Yesterday I opened a fourth bag and today the trouble started full force again.

The 9 month old female I had to take to the vet the last time had yellow, watery diarrhea by this afternoon (every hour). The other 5 nine month old dogs had yellow pies and straining. The 5 old dogs so far seem unaffected, except for one who has vomited at least twice. This does not surprise me, because I am aware that it is young dogs who are the more severely affected by toxins when there is a dog food problem.

Three of the bags have identical lot numbers or whatever they are called, and the food in those bags appeared to be the same color, a lighter color than the old formula. The bag I opened yesterday differs in some of the numbers and is a darker color than the other three. Did they tweak the formula again??? Is the food not being produced consistently the same from batch to batch??? I'm not an expert therefore I am not sure what the difference in color indicates, except that I don't think it is anything good.

This afternoon I purchased a different brand of dog food and for dinner mixed 25% of it to 75% Canidae (except for the sickest one who had rice and broth). Everyone cleaned their plate except the super intelligent sibe, who carefully picked out every single grain of the new food and left every single grain of the Canidae.

I do intend to contact the FDA. I have all of my bags and I will be supplying them with the bag lot numbers. I would suggest that anyone who is still feeding the food or has switched and still has their bags in possession hold on to them just in case this is more than a matter of Diamond being unable to produce consistent food from batch to batch. I will also be keeping a sample of the food from this bag.

Normally I would be providing this information to Canidae, but since they did not reply to my first email several weeks ago I will not be contacting them again.

I still have 2.5 cases unused. called and no care attitude by canidae customer service. I have lost much sleep over this.

We have had Sadie on Canidae since she was a puppy. It took us until she was about 4 months old to even find a food that would keep her stools hard. We'd switch foods and they would stay hard for a few days then turn runny again - quite the opposite of most people who do sudden food changes. Finally we tried Canidae ALS and the stools have been good every since. She was offically diagnosed with IBD at 4.5 months old and def. suffers from food intolerances. Then about 2 months ago, Sadie came to visit me and she was ******* yellow again! I got so mad at my boyfriend accusing him of buying petstore food and feeding it to her (he always complained about how he had to go to a special store to get her food).

Even when he showed me the food he brought with him I didn't believe it was Canidae because it looked so different. Come to find out, they had a formula switch and Sadie never adjusted. She had always been a little rashy baby but after the Canidae switch she got huge pumps on her head that spread down her neck and she had red scaly patches on her skin. We took her to the vet where she was said to have pyoderma and was put on antibiotics and shampoos. She continued to have incredibly loose, yellow colored stools ( I assume from the new coloring in the food) and her gas got a lot worse. Her hair began to fall out around her face and her skin began to smell.

We just switched her to Kumpi food after talking extensively with their nutritionist and founder. We've already seen the stool firm up and her rash is getting better! I am so upset at Canidae. Why take such a good product and go and do this to it? It worked great the way it was - and [they] went and ruined it and hurt a lot of dogs in the process. I am never going back to corporate dog food again and will never use another Canidae product the rest of my life.

I have been feeding my two dogs Canidae Lamb & Rice for the last two years without incident. Two weeks ago I bought a new bag and found that the kibbles were more of a yellowish color rather than the usual brown and were also larger. After a few days, my dogs' stool was yellow and loose. This week both dogs began vomiting. This caused us to wonder if the dog food was the problem so we checked on the Internet. Sure enough many other pet owners experienced the same symptoms. We disposed of the remaining dog food immediately and plan to switch to Eagle Pack.

Other than the weight and color, there was no indication on the packaging that the formula was changed. We counted on Canidae to provide a healthy food for our pets and were seriously let down. I'm glad we caught this in time before our dogs suffered worse symptoms and will never buy or recommend Canidae products.

$28.88 for the 15lb bag of food. No vet bills yet but the well being of our beloved pets has been compromised.

I started using Canidae about 2 or 3 years ago. Another dog food company had abruptly changed ingredients and my dogs would no longer eat it, and one got an ear infection.

I spent a lot of time researching brands and settled on Canidae. My dogs LOVED it. I didn't do the traditional gradual change over, and my dogs experienced no problems. Everything has been great. I even worked for a pet store that sold a LOT of Canidae, and can count on one hand the number of individual dogs it didn't work out for. Our store sold over 80 of the 40# bags a week! That's feeding a lot of dogs.

Well a few months ago I got the first of the new bags. I wasn't happy about the price but it was my first time buying from that particular store so I thought they just were higher priced. Then I noticed the 5# smaller bags.More money for less food doesn't make me happy.

When I got home, I noticed the new ingredients. Now, I KNOW ingredients, the pet store I worked in required me to know this stuff as we had a high number of clients with allergy dogs. I wasn't impressed, took a deep breath, and put it in their bowls. Only one dog finished his dinner that night. Out of 5!

It only got worse, and my allergy dog began digging at himself and got greasy skin and hair. I immediately knew it had to be the food and emailed Canidae. Their response was that the food is now better. I might have bought their explaination if I didn't already know so much about dog food.

I went to the store and they told me that Canidae had again raised prices, forcing them to raise prices. $45 for a 35# bag is way too steep for me! She said other customers were complaining as well, and that Canidae wasn't selling very well.

After looking at every brand of food in the store, I was forced to go with Diamond Natural. I just can't afford to spend more on dog food.

I loved Canidae, my dogs looked so good on it. They look ok now, but not like they used to. I'm realy disappointed.

The newest formulation of Canidae Lamb and Rice is acutely toxic to dogs. Like all the people whose stories are below my dog ate Canidae for as long as I owned him until I bought a bag of their new formula last month. Within 24 hours he began vomitting up to 5 time a day and his stools became runny.

Canidae had not labeled their new formula on the bag so I had no idea it was new until I went online to the Canidae website. Once I learned it was new formula, I took my dog off of this food and gave him some Blue Buffallo lamb and rice. He stopped vomitting and his stools firmed up within 24 hours. He is still not 100% but I pray he heals up soon.

Please!!! call the FDA now if you have a problem 1-888-463-6332. File a complaint and they will investigate. I have already contacted the FDA but if more people call it will certainly drive this into the spotlight. We had sang the praises of Canidae ALS for over 2 years. We adopted a dog from a shelter that arrived with diarrhea and horrible coat condition and odor. We could not find a food that agreed with her until we tried Canidae ALS. That is all we fed her and when we added a new puppy, we eventually transitioned him to Canidae ALS.

Their coats were gorgeous, they smelled great and never an ear or skin problem. Almost never a digestive issue and they always passed small stools. Until the NEW formula that is. Non stop gas, itching and worse was the gigantic mountains of yellow mushy stool that we picked up for 2 months along with unexplained vomiting. Our female also began to eat out of the litter box, something she had NEVER done prior to the new Canidae ALS formula. The male pooped in his crate and on our rugs several times which is out of the ordinary for him.

If Canidae had made their new grain free formulas available when they improved their other formulas, We probably would have tried one and may have stayed a Canidae customer. We most certainly were not going to try another of the improved formulas after seing what the improved ALS did to our dogs.

In all fairness to Canidae, our retailer WAS aware of the switch and we were able to do the slow transition. It did not matter in our case as our dogs were still not tolerating the new formula after alost 2 months of being on it.

Since the change in formulation, my dogs have been doing better than ever before. Both of my dogs have extremely sensitive digestive systems, so I called the company when they changed the formula to find out what recommendations they had for transitioning my dogs. After following their recommendations, my dogs had normal stools within 3 days.

I have tried each of their foods (ALS, Chicken & Rice, Lamb & Rice and Platinum) on my dogs and the only formula that gave my dogs any problem was the Lamb & Rice. My dogs LOVE the taste and have better skin, coats and overall health than ever!

I am posting this because I know there are complaints out there, yet no one is willing to write anything about how wonderful the changes are. If you actually look at the ingredients in their new formulas, you will notice that the health benefits to dogs outweighs any complaint on this site. I did alot of research on the ingredients and this is what I found...

Brown Rice: Least damaged rice because only the outermost layer, the hull, is removed, avoiding the unnecessary loss of nutrients. Contains manganese which produces energy from protein and carbohydrates and is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids, which are important for a healthy nervous system and in the production of cholesterol which is used by the body to produce sex hormones. Brown rice also helps to prevent colon cancer with its Fiber and Selenium.

White Rice: Helps to prevent cancer. Strengthens the digestive tract.

Rice Bran: Help the body fight harmful molecules known as free radicals.

Peas: Tonifies the spleen-pancreas and stomach. Harmonizes digestion. (Interesting fact: used to treat spasms, vomiting, hiccups, belching, coughing, constipation, carbuncles and boils).

Potatoes: Rich in vitamin C, the B-complex vitamins and has good doses of the minerals Iron, Calcium, manganese, magnesium and phosphorus. Great as a digestive remedy! Considered a good liver remedy and can be helpful for gallstones and other gallbladder problems.

Oatmeal and Cracked Pearl Barley: Reduces levels of blood glucose, insulin & triglycerides. Reduces risk of coronary disease.

Millet: Cuts cancer risk by decreasing the toxicity of certain bile acids. Reduces LDL (bad? cholesterol) levels without lowering HDL (good? cholesterol) levels. Makes pets less likely to develop colorectal, stomach and endometrial cancers & heart disease. Slows starch digestion, which may help diabetics avoid steep rises in blood sugar levels following meals.

Tomato Pomace: Reduces gastric acid secretion (this is a great digestive aid). Helps to reduce stool volume and odor.

Papaya: Rich source of antioxidant nutrients, such as carotenes, vitamin C and flavonoids; the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals potassium and magnesium; and fiber. Protects against heart disease, promotes digestive health, has various anti-inflammatory effects, supports the immune system and promotes lung and respiratory health. Controls premature ageing as well as assisting in the increase of male fertility.

Pineapple: Loaded with Vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, potassium, fiber and Vitamin C. Low in fat and cholesterol. Strengthens bones and connective tissue. Contains bromelain, which has been found to help suppress coughs and loosen mucus. Aids in digestion. Helps rid the body of stones. Is a diuretic & diaphoretic. Soothes gastric irritability.

This company still uses ingredients from the USA ONLY!!! Their ingredients are still ALL NATURAL and they are one of the only companies out there that are willing to tell us who is manufacturing their food for them.

Last but not least, if you think about the change of carbs (from rice alone to the addition of essential carbs)you would notice that if you add water to any carb, what happens.....the moisture is absorbed. Don't you think obviously that diahrreah would not be caused by the carbs? I know that in their Lamb & Rice formula, they added Fresh Lamb Meat. Because the food is tastier now the dogs are eating it faster than they did before. When I over eat, I know I have digestive upset....that is the same for dogs.

In closing, if you complain, make sure you know your facts first! I for one am very satisfied with their formulation change and will continue to buy their foods for my current and any future animals I adopt as well as recommend them to everyone I know!

My 8.5 yr old black lab has been on Candidae her entire life, from puppy food, to lamb and rice to now platinum for seniors which she's been on for at least 5 yrs. Over the past three weeks, she has had an unknown but severe allergic reaction which ultimately required intravenous cortisone to improve and she is still incredibly itchy and uncomfortable. In fact we have an appt with the vet today to get longer acting cortisone shot. This morning, my lab, who normally eats everything, refused to eat her food. I have never seen this from her before, even when she's been sick, she'd still eat, albiet a bit slower and less enthusiastically.

I quickly deduced that she was not off her food as she acted otherwise completely normal and ate all the biscuits I could give. I promptly called my pet food store to report I thought something must be wrong with my dogs Candidae. They immediately informed me that they've been receiving many complaints about Candidae over the past few days and that there had been a change in formulas. Immediately it all made sense, the allergies, the gassiness and now her flat out refusal to eat. I promptly switched her over to another brand of food and she ate with gusto (I would have loved to have mixed it in gradually but there was no way I was going to force her to eat that Candidae after her reaction to it).

It's clear that this new formula has some major issues. I never received any notice that there were changes in the formula and no warning that this could happen.

My dog suffereed for 3 weeks with a severe allergic reaction, and we spent $100 on a vet visit and countless more time and energy trying to diagnose her allergy issue. Also wasted $25 on bag of dog food which now has to be thrown out.

I sent the following email to Canidae after noticing that my dogs were not doing well on the new formula. We had successfully been feeding this brand of food for 16 months before the formula change.

Message: I just wanted to let you know personally that I will be changing foods after seeing your new formula and who is manufacturing your product. I did a lot of research on foods when before we rescued our two great danes and your product came well recommended. We have been SUPER happy over the past year and have recommended your product to numerous other dane owners! However I'm very disappointed by your decision to outsource your manufacturing to Diamond. I'm also not pleased with the new look and formula of the food. The green color is off putting and the dryness of the kibble makes it look like any other store brand rather than a premium kibble. That is all just looks and opinion though. My dogs have experienced an increase in gas and looser stools on the new formula. So, now I have had to do my research all over again and will be switching to Eagle Pack which still is manufactured in their own facility and controls their ingredients. I just wanted to let you know why I'm switching and why a lot of people I know are switching rather than just being a number on a sales report. I think you may find that the demand that you could not meet in your old facility will no longer be an issue when everyone switches over rather than feeding something made in a Diamond facility. I wish you would have considered who feeds your food and the demands for quality that we have for our pets

We have successfully switched to Eagle Pack with wonderful results.

In my honest opinion, I think there is something wrong with the ingredients. Diamond is not providing Canidaes ingredients. I thought he had gotten a virus so did the vet we did antibiotics for 10 days and put him on I/D. We did stools samples thinking worms maybe..came back neg. 4 times.

Still thinking it was something else and not the food we assumed it was giardia and again tested .. negitive! Now I was making hamburger and rice for him, he weight loss was horrendus. Within 2 days his stool was normal , no blasting ,no vomiting ,he didn't look like he was going to pop.He was a playful pup again. It took about 3 weeks to figure this out, how dare Canidae do this to our family. He is now 6 months old and smaller than he should be but I think he'll catch up to his litter mates who didn't suffer as much as he did.

I have used Canidae for close to a year now, on my small breed dogs, and all have done very well until they switched the formula. Unfortunatly I had 2 litters of pomeranians at the time of the change. One litter was 7 weeks old, the other 5 weeks old. I had been giving them moistened kibble from about 4 weeks of age. I had 2 of the older pups suddenly go into hypoglycemia and dehydration and couldn't revive them, they also had diarrhea and had quit eating. They both died within 24 hours.

About a week later my younger litter started having problems. The runt of that litter especially. They used to all run to eat the sofened kibble, and about the same time all stopped eating. I spent many sleepless nights pumping them full of liquids. I had 2 more pups in this liter with hypoglycemia. I was able to bring them out of it, but after 12 days it was all to much for the smallest one, and he died in my hands trying to give him one last meal of puppy formula.

I like the others suspected everything except the dog food because I had learned to trust it. Once I figured it out, and switched, my older dogs have also recovered.

    I also believe

it caused the little poms mother's milk to dry up about the same time they stopped eating and started getting sick. She was lifeless and weak looking. I cooked them all chicken to entice them to eat. I also have a King Charles Spaniel, that has been pregnant through this whole thing, and am very concerned about her little unborn pups. I had to switch the food cold turkey, and for the most part, most have improved. I'm sure the puppies were just not strong enough to take it, with me feeding it to them plus receiving it through the mother's milk. It was particulary hard to loose the older ones, who were already weaned. At that age they are usually happy and healthy, and ready to go to their forever homes.

So I lost a total of 3 registered Pomeranain puppies, and could have lost much more if I had not been alerted to the food issues. I feel that it could have been all prevented if I had known. I expect to see a full recall soon, so that won't happen to other unsuspecting breeders that go the extra mile to purchase what they believe to be a top brand dog food.

I had switched dog foods from my previous brand because it had begun causing gastric and digestive upset with my dogs and I was looking for a food that had a higher protein content to feed a litter that I was expecting. I own and raise Great Danes and Cane Corso Mastiffs. I am very aware of switching a dogs diet gradually since my Danes don't tolerate food changes very well so when I switch I do it over the course of a month. Once the one month point came about everything should have been fine but it wasn't. At that point I was fully feeding Canidae to my 4 great danes, my Cane Corso and her 7 puppies (once they were in the weaning process). During that time, my Cane Corso had explosive boughts of diarrhea and her all of the puppies did on and off as well. This is not even to mention that the danes were having the same difficulty.

I had known about the formulation change but in reading the ingredients, thought it would work well. It didn't. I have since pulled my dogs off the Canidae and it took a couple of my dogs over a month to recover their stomachs but now they are doing fantastic. I will never use Canidae again.

I wanted to switch with a ratio of 2 or more of the old to 1 of the new but could only switch with my one remaining bag of old formula. I did this very slowly over the course of 3 weeks, slowly mixing in more. COntinuously, my puppy had runny poops, diahrhea accidents in his crate and vomiting. After a few weeks of this, I finally decided to make a switch over to raw prey model diet and from day 2, we were back to solid stools and no vomitting.

My dogs had been switched to Canidae dog food because the old food I had fed for 14 years was discontinued in my area. I started feeding the Canidae with good results UNTIL they changed the formula. I was unaware of any ingredient change, but realized the food looked different. I was assured by a Canidae rep that the food was okay, but there was no mention of the formula change.

Right after starting my dogs on what I now know WAS the new formula, all the ones eating it (I have 5 dogs, 4 were eating the Canidae and one is on another hypoallergenic food from a different company)started having very yellow diarrhea and occasional vomiting of a yellow frothy type.

I work in a veterinary clinic, and I took in stool sample, all of which were negative for bacteria or parasites. I thought my dogs had picked up something. I treated them all with antibiotics and anti-diarrheal meds. Nothing woked. I had been fighting the diarrhea for a motnth when another breeder friend sent me the notices about other people having the same experiences with their dogs on the new formula.

Now, it has clicked with me that the problems are being caused by the Canidae. I have been showing purebred dogs (Rough and Smooth Collies) for 18 years and been a breeder for 9 years. Because of my experience and my job working in a veterinary hospital, I am fully aware of how to gradually swith dog foods. I was unaware that the formula had changed, and after a month, the dogs should have been adjusted anyway. Not happening.

I went out yesterday and bought Avo-Derm brand and started switching my dogs over. Just overnight with only a small amount of the Avo-Derm mixed with the Canidae my older retired champion girl, who had the worst diarrhea has shown an improvement in her stool.

When i heard that Canidae had switched to Diamond as their manufacturing source, that just gave me shudders. My dogs are first and foremost, beloved family members, and secondly, they are valuable show dogs and breeding animals. I WILL NOT risk their health by feedng them a poor quality dog food. I will never buy, or recommend Canidae ever again. My cats eat the Felidae cat food, and even though they have not been negatively affected (yet) I will be switching them to another brand of cat food. Canidae did not need to fix something that was not broken. They had a responsibility to their consumers to let us know of the formula change, which they neglected to do. Their decision to use Diamond to manufacture their food was a very poor decision due to Diamond's well deserved bad reputation and past history.

I spent 4 weeks trying to diagnose the problems my dogs were having with my veterinarians. Even with my employee discount at work, I spent around $200 in medicines and tests.

When we started to use the last bag purchased, our dog became hesitant to eat the food. After struggling through half the bag (6.6 lb bag) he began to vomit and have severe diarrhea. Within a day, his vomit and stool was full of blood and we rushed him to the vet. After 3 days of being hooked up intravenously to keep him alive, the vet still could not figure out the cause of the problem. He was tested for possible blockage and pancreatitis.

We nursed him back to good health with fresh vegetables, fruits, yogurt, chicken broth and Gatorade. Not suspecting the Canidae food, after he got better, we tried to get him to continue to eat it, to which he ran from the food bowl.

After discussing this with the owner of the pet store, I now know that the food was most likely the problem. I would like to know if anyone knows when this formula was changed and what markings should I be looking for on the bag that may indicate that the product that I have is the New Formula. Regardless, I would not recommend this brand of food to anyone.

I called Candidae back and the women I talked to then was not helpful nor polite , she said you have something going on with your dogs it is not our food . and no one has complained except for you being the first one . I took stool samples in to vet NOTHING no paristites no Giardia nothing but very upset stomachs .

I went to the feed store and my dealer told me to try Fromms Gold Adult Holistic , I did and I am here to tell you everything is back to normal my dogs coats are getting back to nomal stools are back to normal , I have NEVER in all the years and changes of food ever encountered this problem. I will never use another Canidae product again

I have fed Canidae for 12.5 years and have always been extreemly happy with it until now, my dogs have always thrived on it. Now the formula has been changed and I certainly will not sing the same praise. The Company Rep.I spoke to recently said they were not lessening the quality only Diversifying the Carbohydrates and that it was an improvement I am now on my second bag of the new improved formula and all my dogs are chewing on themselves and have HOLES at the base of their tales!!!! THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN 12.5 years!!!! I AM SOOO angry!

The Rep was rude at the recent San Diego Wags 4 Wishes event and even went so far as to call me the evil one because I dared to ask her why they had changed their formula, lessened the bag size by 5 pounds and increased the price all at the same time? This seemed reasonable questioning to me. I have recommended this food to my puppy people and training clients for years and will never do so again. When I also asked the Rep. where the food was being manufactured, she told me that she did not know. This seems very unlikely to me!

My dogs are all miserable. They have all been chewing on themselves and have bitten holes into their coats at the base of their tails and are even bleeding. My older dog has explosive dihareea! I find it very unlikely that there would be any other cause as all of my currrent dogs have been raised their entire live's of 3 - 7 and 12.5 years on this one formula. I have been a loyal customer for 12.5 years to this company but now I am forced to look for a new food. I am now shopping for a new company that cares more about the dogs than their bottom line!

I recently changed to Canidae Lamb and Rice dry dog food for my 2 working German Shepherds Dog. Both of my dogs have loose yellowish stools and have vomited a few times over the last few days. Until I was pointed to the Consumer Reviews, it didn't dawn on me that it might be the dog food. Neither dog is eating on a regular schedule which is VERY rare. I'm taking them off this food immediately!

My dogs are working search and rescue dogs. We are scheduled to attend a class that will cost about $1000 in just two weeks and possibly certify one of them. I am praying that their loose stools and eating habits improve and do not affect their performance at this event or it will be money wasted!
