I adopted my German Shepherd/black lab mix on January 10, 2013 from a local shelter. I bought a bag of Purina dog chow, which was what the shelter was feeding, and the Blue Buffalo senior large breed life protection dog food, and began the transition over. That same week she went to the vet for an overall checkup along with blood work. At that time all results showed a happy, healthy, middle-aged dog. Within 2 weeks I noticed her stools were a bit loose so I included some canned pumpkin in with her feedings. The pumpkin would only help for one bowel movement and typically by the end of the day, it would be loose again. I also noticed my dog's appetite had decreased.
By the beginning of March, she had gone from consuming 3.5 cups of the dry dog food to barely finishing half of that. Initially, I attributed the decrease in appetite to the higher protein content. She also had several lumps forming along her ribs and chest. I started researching possible side effects or other complaints about Blue Buffalo dog foods and recognized similar symptoms being reported. I took my dog to the vet on April 1, 2013 and her weight alone showed she had lost 9 pounds in shortly over a month. The lumps were biopsied and shown to be benign, fatty tumors. When I asked the vet if any of the symptoms could be attributed to the feed, he concurred and strongly recommended I switch her to another brand. A mere three days later, still possibly too soon to tell, her energy is up, her stools are regular and firm along with the return of her healthy appetite.

I made a complaint the week of March 18th regarding the Blue Buffalo Natural Fish and Sweet Potato that my 4-year-old yellow lab was eating. My vet told me that the toxin that killed him happened within the week he examined him. After researching his signs prior to the death and reading and finding more and more that his signs were the same as most of the people that made complaints, I found out the date I purchased his food and the number on the bag. I purchased his on March 1st! The number on the bag is 85961000326. If your dogs are on Blue Buffalo, please check out the bag's number. It is in your and their best interest.

We took our dog to the vet because he was having some intestinal issues and could no longer tolerate the Iams. The vet put him on a prescription dog food for a short time. Once he had finished that, we checked to see which dry dog food would be most likely the prescription food. We talked directly to the Blue Buffalo rep and he suggested that we try the BB Chicken and Rice formula. Our dog did okay for awhile but then he started scooting his bowl around as if he was trying to bury it or he would just sniff his food and walk away. We took him back to the vet again to have blood work done. They discovered that his BUN levels were extremely high. They kept him over the weekend and gave him IV fluids, which brought his levels down some.
We took him home but he refused to eat any type of dog food, which told the vet that he was going into kidney failure. He was home less than a week when we had to have him put to sleep because he looked like he was in pain and he refused to eat any food at all. I guess the point that I am trying to make here is that we believe that the BB dog food was tainted with something. That is why he refused to eat any kind/brand of dog food and because of his age, he couldn't recover from it.

I recently switched to BB from Pedigree and followed the instruction to slowly mix the food in over time. My golden had itching and hair problems and within weeks, they started to fade away. I love that this product has done well, but will probably keep a 50/50 mixture for a while after reading comments here. But the purchasing sites have good reviews on this product and it is very important to remember that people most often come to sites like this only if they have complaints, not compliments. Go by Amazon reviews or other pet site reviews. Animals die and we all love our animals like children, but let us be smart about raising them and getting research about the products from multiple sources. Finally, let us also be honest about this site. It asks you if you want an attorney to contact you.

This is an additional post, as I first posted on February 20th, 2013 about taking our dogs off of all Blue Buffalo foods. One of our dogs had been eating BB's Wilderness Salmon Dry Kibble, and the other dogs were eating BB's Life Protection Adult Chicken and Rice. All of the dogs that were on the Chicken and Rice are acting okay now (a month after switching to another food). The dog that had been on the Wilderness Salmon Dry Kibble since May of 2012 and was on it until February 14th, 2013 (when I switched her to the new food that all of our other dogs are eating) just had emergency surgery last night and had to have her kidney removed. The vet said her kidney was 2.5 times the size of her other kidney, and for the past month she's been very lethargic and acting weak. And about ten days ago, she began to vomit up her water and not want to eat, as well as urinating in her bed.
The condition of her kidney when it was removed last night was something that had to have been growing out of control for at least the past month, or longer to reach that size (her kidney had dead tissue all around it when it was removed, and as I said it was 2.5 times larger than her other kidney). I now fear that this might have been from eating the Wilderness Dry Salmon Kibble for almost nine months. We don't know if she's going to survive, and I will always regret having purchased the "most expensive" brand of BB for her. As even though our other dogs also got sick on the other BB brands, none of them have experienced the conditions that she's now going through.

We purchased a 15 lb. Blue Buffalo Dry Small Breed Chicken & Rice this past Saturday from PetSmart (where we always shop) and can't understand why our 3 fur babies won't eat it. I have been buying this brand for so long, and now it looks a lot lighter in color, and it smells different. Could you please tell me the reason for this and why my dogs won't eat it?! Unfortunately, when we brought it home, we always dump it into a sealed container, so I don't have the bag to take it back to PetSmart. Thanks for your help!

Our Golden Retriever puppy joined our family at the end of January. The breeder had been feeding the pups with Nutro and recommended that we wait a month or so before transitioning to anything else. We bought a large bag of Nutro and a large bag of Blue Buffalo. Two weeks ago, when the pup was 3 1/2 months old, we started mixing two cups of Nutro to about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of BB. We noticed that his stools started to get a "tasty freeze" appearance. At the end of one week, we increased the BB to about 1/3 of the mix. The pup's stools continued to get looser and it was taking him longer to eat his meals. He also started leaving food in his bowl.
At the end of the second week, we told our vet what we had been doing and he suggested that we just go to 100% BB. The pup went to diarrhea within hours. After two meals of BB, I went back to all Nutro. Within 8 hours his stools went back to normal and he was eating like a little pig again.

Something has to have been changed with their product ingredients. After having my dog on B.B. product for almost a year, now it is making her sick. Where exactly does all of these ingredients come from? I'm done with this product if I cannot trust that all was indeed made in the U.S.A. Many of these stories mirror mine word for word after feeding my dog this brand. This I find too much of a coincidence to overlook. The only difference is that I am so glad I happened upon this site early enough to know the warning signs. Blue Buffalo, you are no longer given in this house.

Having associations with this company, they no longer value quality but more on how to make more money. Meanwhile, they keep ignoring issues that are coming to the attention. Unfortunately, they are following down the same path as many brand recognized manufacturers. Please hold them accountable for any problems that arise with the food you are feeding your pets. There are such better quality foods out there within or a bit more reasonable with their pricing which I feed my dogs and have had great results. Hold Blue accountable for their declining commitment to quality products.

When I got my puppy, I put her on Blue Buffalo Grain-Free Puppy Formula. I understood that a lot of people with American Bulldogs used this food for their dogs as it was supposed to be very good for them. Well, my pup would not eat it without something extra. She drank a lot of water and was overall lethargic while eating it. Her stools were soft, mushy and just plain all around not regular. She also pooped 3-5 times a day. Then she started to chew and itch at herself until she would bleed and whine. She reacted so poorly to this food that I changed her diet completely.
She now eats a Biologically Accurate Raw Diet (BARF Diet) which is basically just Raw Chicken and other meats. She is getting better slowly but isn't 100% yet and won't be for a few months. Her stools have returned to normal and she doesn't drink nearly as much water as she was when she was eating the kibble. Also, she's got all the puppy energy you would expect now. She's not lethargic anymore. If anyone has a problem with allergies in their dogs related to kibble they are feeding them, I would highly suggest looking into a BARF diet. It isn't just for big dogs; little dogs like Chihuahuas can benefit from it as well.
Just do the research on it and no harm will come to your dogs on the Raw Diet. It lowers the chance of bloat as well as food-based allergies as the dog's body isn't designed to process many of the things that are put into kibble as fillers. Best of luck to anyone choosing BB though. I only hope none of these dreadful things happen to your pets.

We adopted our sweet PW Corgi girl from Corgi rescue in 2008. We wanted the best for her, so I started feeding her Blue Buffalo. I was very happy with it and then she started developing gastrointestinal problems last year. So I switched to Simple Ingredients kibble and canned. She seemed to do better. Lately, she has had two episodes of loose stool and today, she seemed to be salivating too much and she seems wobbly. I got on the website and started reading with horror all the stories about dogs and cats being poisoned by Blue Buffalo. We have an appointment with the vet today and I hope it is nothing serious.

Last Fall I decided to try my best friend on an expensive, no grain dog food that seemed to have great reviews. I want only the best for my girl, Butterfly, who is a six-year-old Imperial Shih-Tzu (aka Ewok). About two days into switching over her food, she began waking me up every other hour to go outside and poop. I became concerned and took a flashlight out to find some very slimy, sometimes bloody, diarrhea. Concerned, I called up my vet and told him what was happening and he thought I should slow down the food change over ratios. I did this but she still had late night issues for several more days. At this time I also noticed she seemed to be drinking more water than usual and just thought it was part of being on dry food.
About four months went by and I started noticing she was becoming more lethargic and seemed a bit stiff when I picked her up. One morning I went to take her outside and found her on the bed having a seizure - this happened three times in 1/2 hours’ time. I rushed her to the vet and they seemed to think she may have epilepsy and to watch her closely. Or, it was a sign of internal in distress.
Shortly after this episode, I noticed that she was peeing more than usual and scooting her butt on the ground. I thought she might have an infection of an anal gland, which sometimes gets stuck, so back to the vet we went. I was concerned and I had them run a couple of tests on her, and to my surprise, her U.A. showed up with a bladder infection, due to an extremely high level of oxalate crystals in her urine. She was put on a prescription diet and given antibiotics. Two weeks later I am back at the vet. She appears to be in distress and shaking all night long. They ran more tests. The antibiotics didn't touch the problem and now she is on stronger meds and painkillers and additional prescription food to remove crystals. The vet said she may require surgery if there is no improvement.
At this point I am so stressed out! I love my dog so much. She is my best friend and I can't bear to see her in pain, let alone knowing that the food I thought was so great may be the cause of this. Our pets love and trust us to take care of them. I feel deceived to say the least. I have been reading other pet owner reviews on this and it seems like they are all very similar. My friend is a vet assistant and she says they have treated several dogs with kidney issues and they were on Blue Buffalo food also. Two of them died.
I have some of the dog food in question that I saved to be tested. I would like to know where to send it. I sure hope that this goes more public and they investigate and recall this product before any more animals or pet owners suffer the consequences.

I have been feeding my 1-1/2 year old Cocker Spaniel Blue Buffalo for almost a year with no problems. In the last month, she would only eat it if something else was in it, like dog treats, peas, scrambled eggs, etc. Just bought a new bag last weekend and fed her twice out of it. She started having diarrhea. I took her to vet that day and they gave her probiotics since diarrhea seemed to be her only problem. The next day she started vomiting, so we took her to emergency vet. They gave us antibiotics and stuff to stop vomiting. Next day, she is eating and acting her normal goofy self. After reading all the reviews here, I am sure it was the food. The vets couldn't find anything wrong with her. I returned the full bag of BB to the pet store and got a refund. I also warned them about what is going on and passed the word to my vet's office in case someone else brings their dog in. I used to recommend BB, but will now warn people about it.

I saw the commercials for Blue and thought this was going to be a great choice for my dog. He has been eating it for about 4 months. I never noticed anything wrong with him until I opened up the new bag and started giving it to him. After about two weeks, I noticed that he wasn't himself at all. He would go into super deep sleeps; he wasn't as happy. It would take him forever to eat, and his stools weren't bulky at all. This past weekend, he started throwing up tremendously and had terrible diarrhea. I took him to the vet today and the doctor said he had a terrible stomach infection. My dog wasn't drinking either, so the doctor had to pump him full of liquid that leaves a huge bump on his back until my dog absorbs it. He was also given a stomach medication. I told the doctor about his food and he said that could be the reason for his stomach issues.
I made a generic post on my social network, and all hell broke loose about Blue Buffalo. Every owner who gave their pet this food had the same issues as my dog does. I have decided to switch his food to Science Diet and will be throwing away the Blue and washing everything that food has touched. I'm upset that this "great food" for dogs has made him sick. $128 vet bill later and $54 of food in the garbage, I'm actually more irate than upset.
Do yourself a favor, and ask around before you get this food. Keep in mind that the "great reviews" you read online, whether it has to deal with this food or anything else, most are written by company employees. I should've done my research and now my dog is sick because of me. Hopefully, he'll be better in a few days. Good luck everyone.

I have had my two labs on Buffalo Blue now for 2 years. They were previously on Wellness. I switched them to Blue because it was supposed to be the "best" natural food. For some time now, my 4-year-old healthy lab has been making a sound with his mouth, like he was nauseous. I did not think too much about this, just thinking he was thirsty. He was drinking a lot of water but had no signs of illness. Last week, he became ill on Sunday, March 10, and I took him into my vets for care. He admitted him, telling me he was seriously ill. The only signs prior to that: He got sick on Friday night. I made him boiled hamburg and rice, and he ate that the next day and threw it up.
There were no signs of diarrhea or blood in the stool. Test after test did not find a specific toxin. His blood work showed kidney problems and he had liver problems too. He responded to the liver issue but never recovered from the kidney problems. We did bring him to Tufts and they tried to help him recover also. The underlying problem was his kidneys were so far gone that he could not recover. I saw a perfectly healthy 4-year-old lab go from running the beach to having absolutely no strength to get up. I had no option but to have to say goodbye to him.
My husband and I drove ourselves crazy wondering what could ever have done this to him. I backtracked every step I could to see if I was responsible for what happened to him. After researching his symptoms, my husband found the article from Consumer Affairs on Buffalo Blue. The article showed us that a lot of the complaints of people using this food had similar problems. How can this company falsify what this food is doing to animals, bragging how it is the best food to have your pet on. If you know of anyone who is using Blue, please let them know about the problems it can cause. There is no bringing my dog back, but I will be telling people that I know who are using this food to stop and research the facts. RIP Remy.

I have a 10-year-old beagle basset corgi. He has been on Nature’s Recipe for years. We were out of town and the store did not have the grain free we usually get. They did, however, have Blue buffalo grain free. I had read about Blue and what a great product it was. We gradually switched him over to the Blue and he seemed to do fine. About 10 days into the bag of Blue, the beagle basset corgi had diarrhea. My poor little guy went at least 20 times in the span of 8 hours. I finally took him to the emergency vet when he started vomiting. Because he is in remission from lymphoma, they ran every test in the book (X-rays, CBC, ultrasound). They had to cath him and hospitalize him for dehydration.
While we were waiting for results hoping the cancer had not returned, I started looking up forums about Blue and was shocked to see the intolerances dogs have to Blue. We were called back to the vet, to the good news that the cancer had not returned, but that he had a GI disruption. He was on antibiotics for ten days. At the end of it all, it cost $1,200.00. Granted, the bill was higher because of his condition. I switched him back; he has been great ever since. Blue Buffalo Food may have high quality ingredients, but a lot of dogs seem to react poorly to it. I will never switch his food again and can't say I would recommend Blue grain free to anybody.

In January, my 19-month-old female/spayed lab stopped eating for three days. She was drinking a lot of water and had diarrhea. I took her to the vet and got medication for the diarrhea and for nausea and some fluids. I took her back two days later because she wasn't any better. Did more fluids, blood work, x-rays and they came back with a high liver function of 845 (normal is up to 150). X-rays showed nothing in the intestines. This was all done on a Friday. Then that Monday, with no change in her condition (and a loss of 8lbs), I elected to have surgery on my dog to see if there was something in the intestines that didn't show on the x-ray. The intestine was swollen 2-3 times normal size, but no blockage. But after having her opened up, the swelling went down.
The next day, she was hungry and started her on some canned food for intestinal problems. When it was time to get her back onto dry food, she wouldn't eat the BB fish and sweet potatoes. I tried some different ones and she started to eat BB grain-free. I was then in the pet store and heard that there were a lot of pets that got sick like this all about the same time. The person at the pet store encouraged me to buy a different brand, which I did, and I'm in the process of switching. She is acting better, but haven't retested her for her liver functions yet.

I have 3 cats (16, 14 and 12 yrs old). I put all 3 cats on Blue Buffalo for the past couple of years because I read how "natural" and good it was for my cats. My 14-yr-old has a history of a sensitive stomach so when I first tried Blue Buffalo, it seemed to agree with him. But lately, he and the other 2 have been vomiting tons, so much so that I called my vet up to come by the house and administer fluids because they were becoming dehydrated. I even changed over to the Grain-Free figuring this might be even milder for them but I couldn't have been more wrong after reading all these comments. I pulled their food immediately and plan on picking up something else today. This makes me so upset because I have been spending so much money on this food thinking it would prolong their lives and now I am thinking I may have just shortened all their lives.
I am really hoping I am not too late for these guys. They are all seniors and I don't think any of them could survive a hit to their kidneys. Does anyone know if Blue Buffalo is planning on looking into any of these complaints? My 4-year-old daughter will be devastated if she loses all 3 of her kitties due to negligence of Blue Buffalo.

I wish I could give a negative star, but I'm required to give/check at least one star to be able to write my comment. I was really pleased to find this website as so many symptoms suffered by others matched those of my puppy exactly - excessive drinking, diarrhea, and refusing to eat. That's when I knew something was really wrong. I finally had a clue to his problems and immediately switched to another brand of food. Within a day or two, he was back to his usual self.
However, I am furious and distraught that I put him through this ordeal and only hope he has no lasting effects. He has been on BB since I adopted him four months ago. Excessive drinking was apparent at the start, but when two different prescriptions didn't help with his diarrhea, I really began to wonder. The final straw was his refusal to eat. All the tests the Vet ran came back negative, so we scheduled x-rays. Thank goodness I found this website the day before and was able to save my puppy all that anxiety, not to mention my pocket book. So spread the word around. If anyone has a pet with these symptoms - excessive drinking, diarrhea, and refusal to eat after being on the food for 3 months, in our case - tell them to switch to a different brand and see if it makes a difference.

Wanting to give only the best to my German Shepherd, I extensively researched dog foods to find only the best food for her as a puppy two years ago. Blue Buffalo touted comparisons to other foods, research based results, etc. We assumed my dog had a sensitive stomach, and we had to work with additional pumpkin, probiotics, and sometimes complete removal from her food to chicken and brown rice cooked at home. However, about a year ago, she began to drink water in excessive amounts, produced constant diarrhea, lost so much weight she literally had bones baring, and her beautiful undercoat disappeared and wouldn't grow back. The vet could find nothing wrong with her, and I struggled watching my beautiful girl suffer.
She became a very picky eater, not wanting her food. After mixing in boiled chicken with her food to prompt her to eat, I watched her get a mouthful of food, drop it on the ground to separate the chicken out from the kibble. She was clearly hungry but refusing to eat the Blue Buffalo. I changed food and lo and behold, she ate every last morsel we would give her. The diarrhea stopped, and she put weight back on. I am completely and thoroughly disgusted with Blue Buffalo at this point. I don't know what they have done differently over the last year, but they are harming our precious animals. When I think back on the endless nights we spent cleaning up horrid explosive diarrhea all night long and her poor sad eyes, I am angered beyond measure. Blue Buffalo needs to be removed from the market.

I have three dogs (a small, a medium and a large dog) and one cat. I purchased Freedom grain-free Blue Buffalo for all of them and mixed it with either Blue Buffalo Freedom grain-free canned or the dark blue can chicken and vegetables. I feed them half canned and half dry food twice a day. I also feed Newman's organic canned in the morning mixed with the Blue Buffalo dry and at night, either the Freedom grain-free canned with the dry or Nature's Variety canned grain-free.
I always feed grain-free and chicken only and always mix and feed three different varieties, so if there are ever problems with the food, my animals aren't getting one particular brand straight. I also buy chicken on sale, cook it, cut it up and mix it with green beans and/or alternate it with sweet potatoes when I have time at least every other week, as for the most part human food ends up being cheaper than the pet food anyway and a lot less risk associated with it. My vet said dry food is worse for their teeth than wet anyway and it's more difficult to digest any grains. I have had no problems with the Freedom Grain-free variety of Blue Buffalo. I hope this helps.

Several months ago I became the mommy to a Great Dane puppy, who is now 8 months old. When we brought him home at 8 weeks, I figured I would feed my new fur baby one of the best foods out there. So I chose Blue Buffalo chicken and brown rice large breed puppy food. I immediately noticed he had terrible diarrhea... I chalked it up to being a new food, and his system just needed time to adjust to the new food. Time passed and after weeks he still had "pudding poops". I asked the vet when I took him for his first visit. They ran a fecal exam on him, and everything came back negative for parasites, and he had his de-worming meds and got his shots, and the vet told us to just give him some more adjustment time with the food. We continued on with the BB and still the "pudding poops" persisted.
We finally started adding some Kirkland Signature Salmon and Sweet Potato grain-free food. There was an improvement, and after we removed the BB and fed him Kirkland exclusively, his poops were completely normal and he hasn't had diarrhea since! I'm glad that my sister brought this page to my attention, and I will tell everyone I know not to feed BB to their fur babies! 55.00 dollars a bag and it's harming/killing people’s beloved pets?! BB ought to be ashamed of their so-called "Superior" dog food! I'm glad that I quit feeding BB, but I'm sad that it was hurting my baby the whole time! I guess I need to count myself as one of the lucky ones though; at least, my baby wasn't harmed or killed by their awful food! :(

I switched our 10-year-old Dalmatian mix to BB Senior Chicken & Rice about 1.5 years ago at the recommendation of our vet and her coat got soft & shiny. She liked the food, no issues except the cost, but she is worth it! I adopted what turned out to be an unhealthy puppy a year ago, and after months of homemade chicken & rice & vet-provided food, we were able to finally switch her to BB Basics - Puppy. At about 1 year, we switched her to BB Basics - Adult Turkey & Potato. No issues until about November, when the old dog started drinking a lot. We did senior blood work & no issues were found. The vet wasn't too concerned & we thought maybe it was drier in the house with our new furnace.
We never thought of the food. Both dogs started hesitating to eat in January. We had bought new bags of food in that timeframe, but we hadn't noticed anything different about it. The young one would always eventually eat it but not heartily or all at one time. She also started getting gassy so we were beginning to wonder about the food. The old one wasn't coming into the kitchen to eat, and would usually only eat if I fed it to her with my fingers. She also wasn't herself - lethargic, growling at the cats she normally loves. I thought she was just getting old & crabby, since she had a clean bill of health. We actually started eliminating various treats first, thinking we had been overdoing treats since they weren't eating too much. Duh!
About 2 weeks ago, the old dog started having tiny soft yellowish stools & about that same time, someone sent me this comment list on Facebook. We switched the older dog abruptly to Innova Senior & she is again eagerly waiting to be fed in the kitchen each morning, has stopped drinking excessively, & her stool is back to normal. She even wants to play fetch again. The young dog is being switched to Merrick Chicken & Rice (she has egg & milk allergies & I didn't want to do the change abruptly). She is eating heartily again and her gas is gone. After reading everyone's comments, my dogs' issues are minor, seem to be resolved, & I am lucky. I just wanted to post in case someone else has noticed some minor differences, and like us, didn't ever think it was related to the food. The proof would be switching them back & seeing if the symptoms resume, but obviously I won't be doing that!

When my local pet store stopped carrying AvoDerm - Senior, I did the homework and found that Blue Buffalo had the next best mix of ingredients/price plus availability and so I bought the Senior version and started mixing it with her food. For a time, the mixing was fine and I did not see any changes in her eating habits. About a week after she was fully on BB-Senior, she would vomit every two days. I did not immediately attribute it to the food since she had been well for the prior two weeks, and so I was examining the yard and other possibilities.
Once she was vomiting every day for 3 days; I pulled the food and bought another bag of AvoDerm - Senior. Within 2 days, she was fine again and had a hearty appetite since she had been so sick for over a week. I had attributed her vomiting not to the quality of the BB-Senior but rather to her age and an inability to tolerate other foods. As I look on these customer reviews, I see a pattern and would ask BB to review their foods.

I have a five-year-old German Shepherd. After feeding him Blue Buffalo for around a year, he started to flat-out reject the food or ate a few mouthfuls and came back to it later (he eats everything - and I mean everything) so this was very odd. We assumed he didn't like a fish oil supplement that we put in his food, but it was the food itself. The day that we switched away from BB, he began eating normally again.

I have 3 cats, ages 7, 6 & 1. 4 months ago, I switched to Blue Buffalo from good recipe. I noticed all the cats’ water bowls were empty a lot but didn't think much of it. With the 6-yr old male that is all black, I did notice his coat was shiny & less dandruff. I thought I was doing well by buying a food with a main ingredient as real meat. Then after one yr, they started throwing up the food quite a few times, so I asked about it. I searched the Internet & saw all of these horror stories and decided to change their food again. I waited for my paycheck to do so. Then one morning, my 6-yr old sweet boy was playing with the 1 yr old one minute and dead the next. I wish I wouldn't have waited. I don't have proof or the means to prove it, but it is what it is.

I've been feeding my six year old German Shepherd Blue Buffalo large breed adult chicken and brown rice formula for about the past two years. About two months ago, I noticed he was drinking an excessive amount of water and urinating frequently. Our vet ran all the blood work to rule out diabetes, Cushing disease, Addison's disease along with a urine culture. Everything came back normal. We began to start a water deprivation test to rule out diabetes insipidus since his urine was so dilute. But about two weeks into reducing his water, he became lethargic and depressed and basically stopped eating. I rushed him to the vet and another full blood panel and urine test was run.
It turned out his calcium level was off the chart. He was flushed with IV fluids and began taking Prednisone to keep the calcium level down. A parathyroid test and hormone blood test was run; however, both tests came back normal. My last stop was at a specialist to have an abdominal ultrasound performed to rule out a hiding tumors. When nothing was found, I was left with the option to perform an expensive blood test that could possibly reveal lymphoma and then perhaps have to perform a bone marrow biopsy since nothing else had been found. The only clue was the high calcium level that was making him sick. He has had at least four complete physicals in the past two months, which have revealed nothing.
Thousands of dollars later, I had began to accept that the love of my life and best friend had lymphoma. However, after finding all of these complaints and stories, I'm leaning towards the conclusion I have been poisoning him with his food! I'm devastated that I could have been making him sick when I was trying to feed him the best. I contacted Blue Buffalo and will be receiving a claim form to send in my bills and veterinary notes. Only time will tell if it truly has been the food making him sick. Last Saturday I returned the BB food and switched to Wellness. We have had great results. If you have been going through something similar, please share! I wish I would have found this sooner so I could have switched his food before I put him through all of this testing that has revealed nothing.

Blue Buffalo Wilderness Duck cat foot dry - My small black cat became lethargic after eating this food for a couple of days. I looked it up to see if there were any recalls on this food and found this info on Consumer Affairs. I removed the food and washed the bowls. When I took her to the vet, he did a blood panel that showed her enzyme levels were up. The vet said that some cat foods with no preservatives can be contaminated or have bacteria. I was lucky to catch it fast. He said she would have been in the hospital for at least a week to be treated for pancreatitis. I am sad for the consumers who lost their pets over this. Vet bill is $106. The vet told me she should be back to normal in a few weeks. I really hope so. She is not herself and it makes me so mad.

I've been feeding my dogs BB for a long time. In 2010, my Max had frequent urine issues. I thought it was his age. The doctor said that it was too much vitamin D. I stopped using Wilderness Salmon, so his urine was better. Now they all are on BB Senior Chicken and Brown Rice, in which my two are vomiting and all went to the vet. The vet said that it's the food; they all have high liver values, so all my dogs are off Blue Buffalo. My Max lost most of his hair on his back. I have all the blood work and I talked to Blue Buffalo. They said that they will look at the blood work and if they're responsible, they will pay for all medical, but what about pain and suffering of our animals, and my shame for feeding my babies this highly dangerous food.

I started feeding my dogs Blue Buffalo. Within one month, one was sick and spent the weekend (3 days, 1PM Friday to 6PM Sunday) in ICU. One month later the second dog still eating Blue started drinking a lot of water and vomiting like the first dog did. She got much worse a lot faster and we had to put her down because there was no hope for her. After my post, Blue Buffalo put on their Facebook page that every one who were complaining weren't telling the truth or were getting paid to say what they were saying. Tell me, what pet parent would lie about such a thing? I have lost a loving pet and my time with the other had been cut a lot. We are talking about a breed that lives 17 to 20 years and now I will be lucky if he makes it to 12. That is hoping I get 5 more years. I will never recommend or feed Blue Buffalo again.

I am not sure if this has anything to do with my dog just being diagnosed with diabetes, but I would say it probably plays a part in it. I have read many reviews about frequent drinking and urination. That is exactly what is going on with my Jack Russell Terrier. I have 4 dogs, 3 chi's and 1 Jack Russell. I took him to the vet today and his count was 500!
He started about a month ago urinating and drinking excessively every 2 hours to be exact. That is about the time I bought the last bag of BB. I don't know if I should continue feeding it to the other dogs now or not as they have no symptoms at present. I spent $50.00 on this darn stuff thinking it was the perfect food for my dogs. They get the top of the line. Now, I think what I have been giving them is equal to a cheap version of what you pick up at a Walmart, etc. I am just crushed because now I have to give my dog shots every day for the rest of his life. I am going to send BB a letter, an email or whatever I can and protest this. I am not very happy and pretty much broke from the vet bill.

I did see warnings getting posted on Facebook and joined the Blue Buffalo official group and put a response about my concerns on their page. They responded immediately and later that evening made a public statement. So either all of the pet parents making these reviews have not properly reported them or they are coincidences with other things that are wrong at the time. If you do not report these incidents to Blue Buffalo, they cannot properly investigate the situation and other pet parents may not be getting the full story because of failure to report. You cannot hold Blue Buffalo liable unless you are willing to report it to them and allow them to investigate the situation.

I really wanted my cat to lose some weight since the vet had expressed some concern, so we switched over to Blue Buffalo. What a mistake that was. One night, our cat started meowing like he was in pain and going in and out of the litter box constantly. We thought maybe it was UTI, so we rushed him in to the animal hospital. After looking him over, the vet determined that he had blood in his urine and crystals. He has been a healthy cat his whole life so I didn't understand why all the sudden he would have a condition like this. The vet suggested special UTI cat food that is very costly. The day after this happened, I started realizing it could be because I had recently changed his food ... I looked on here and almost all of the reviews are the same symptoms my poor cat was having! I can't believe that I thought I was doing something great for him and instead, I was causing a life-threatening situation!

I am angry, very angry. For weeks, our dog has been battling excessive thirst issues and fur not growing in on her back after her last shave. I took her to the vet a week and half ago. He ran blood work for her thyroid just to check. I told him we had just moved, different heat in the house, and maybe stress of the move. However, she started to really not want to eat her food anymore, very reluctant and only ate it when she realized nothing else was coming her way. After reading all these complaints, I feel awful. I could have killed our dog by continuing to feed her bad food. It wasn't always this way. I switched her from Halo over a year ago because she just grew bored with it. We never had issues with that food. Blue was great until about 2 months ago. I now think back to Oct 2012 when I bought a bag and it had an "off/funny" smell not like any of the previous bags. I returned it and the next one smelled the same. I have cancer myself and sometimes my smell is off, so I just fed it to her.
I am so upset. I am sure after reading these complaints this company is hiding something. I am going to see if we can have the remainder of the food analyzed. Anyone know how I go about that? Anyway, two days ago, I switched her to Merrick’s grain free real pork/sweet potato dry. She has firmer stools already and gobbles it up. I am sticking with this company and praying. They do not let me down. All ingredients are grown and processed in the USA. I am not a paid reviewer. I am a real person that has a ton of love, time and money invested in our fur-baby. Our dog is our baby. Trust your gut; it could mean life or death for your pet. Something is wrong with Blue and they are hiding it. BTW, our dog did not vomit, just loose stools, excessive thirst, and fur loss on the back.

I've been sick just after reading all of the horror stories. We also have been buying Blue Buffalo just since January because we thought it was the best. Our 15-year old Lab, who hasn't been sick a day in her life, just passed away 2 weeks ago from kidney failure, so we think. She started drinking water like crazy, and just laying around; this went on for a week. When she went out to go to the bathroom, she had trouble peeing and her stool was bloody. She died a day later. At first we thought it was just old age but now I'm not sure. Our 1 1/2 year old won't even go near the Blue buffalo dog food. I was also told "there are no recalls of any of our products and none of our grains or chicken comes from China."

I raise service dogs for an organization based in Michigan. They require us to feed Iams Adult Lamb and Rice. All of my dogs are 50/50 mixes of Labs and Golden Retriever. My third foster pup, Ditto, was always pretty chubby on Iams. She should weigh around 63-65lbs, ideally. She was tipping the scales closer to 70 and at one point more than that. She was only eating 3/4c of Iams twice a day. That is a tiny amount of food for a lab, especially when the bag says she should get double what I was feeding her. My dogs are very active, so it wasn't just an issue of being a couch potato. At 10 months old, she was released from the organization when preliminary screening joint x-rays revealed she was already showing signs of dysplasia.
Once she was formally adopted, I immediately switched her to Blue. She was fed 1 cup twice daily. Within three months, the puppy pudge we had been battling just fell away. Her coat got shinier, her energy was up but so was her focus during our training sessions. She put on muscle and looks great. She was a little gassy for the first week of the switch but has had no issue since then. She has been on every formula of Blue excluding puppy formulas. She enjoys them all. I now have 3 dogs from that organization (my eldest is a retiree, and the other two are wash outs for joints and temperament). All three of them are on Blue and thriving. I highly recommend this food.

In August 2012, me and my boyfriend decided to get our first puppy. We took him at 6 weeks because the mother was done taking care of them and they were already eating puppy chow. He was eating Purina puppy chow for a while but when I took him to the vet, they suggested to switch to Blue Buffalo because of his breed - he was Saint Bernard, lab and pit mix. So I switched for a little while. He started getting sick. I thought maybe it was because of the change of food, and now I'm not so sure. He got sick for a few days and then he was fine but in Dec. 2012 he had the bad runs on a Sunday. My friend, who is a vet tech, came over and said there's no blood, not to worry yet, go on a just water diet for 24 hours and take it from there. By Thursday, he had not really eaten anything and he also started to not drink. I took him to the vet and they gave him a shot to reduce vomiting. He would, once in a whole, but it wasn't constant. And they were a little concerned that he hadn't gained any weight within the past month; he was only 21 weeks. Put him on a high protein diet for the next few days and was to return Monday for a checkup.
The next morning (Fri), he needed to go outside, I took him out and he was pooping blood; this was at 4am. He also started vomiting blood. I rushed him to the vet and they were honest. They didn't know if he was going to make it. I prepared myself for the worst. They did surgery to see if anything was caught inside him - everything was fine but they noticed his kidneys were destroyed. They tested for leptospirosis (I think that's the name) and it was negative. He started recovering but later that night he had passed. It was very upsetting to lose a puppy that was only 21 weeks. We have been searching for every possible answer and so has the vet and now reading everything here about the health problems, it gets me to wonder about what we really feed our pets, and I want to know if this was the cause. If it was, they should really consider shutting down for good. I would hate to see anyone go through what I had to.

I was feeding a different premium food, which my dogs got tired of - I researched and searched attempting to find the best food I could for my 2 rescued Miniature Poodles. I have one problem in that one of my dogs has allergies. I settled on Blue Buffalo. The first (small) bag was consumed by the dogs, so I purchased a second. I always open and dump into an airtight container. When I did that, I thought the smell was "off" but ignored it. I put down 2 bowls for the next meal. The one dog (female) sniffed and ate, but she is a Chow Hound... The other sniffed and walked away... totally refused his meal. This happened the second meal also, but this time the female refused. After she had eaten the first bowl, she did puke a bit, but dogs do that once in a while - again I didn't see the signs! I no longer had the bag to return, so I just dumped all the food. And it isn't cheap!
I purchased another brand of food and started them out cold turkey without any "change over" time and they both ate - they were ravenous - and they are still eating. I posted this review on the Blue Buffalo FB page and they have now blocked me from posting - they can't take the heat, it appears.

We have 4 dogs from ages 6-12 yrs of age; 3 are Siberian Huskies and one is a Siberian Husky/Samoyed mix. We also have a foster since Jan 2013 (Goberian - Siberian Husky and Golden Retriever). We had our dogs previously on an all natural food called Flint River Ranch and our dogs were thriving on it. It was inconvenient as we had to order it and have it shipped every 2-4 weeks. Price was comparable to Blue Buffalo, and when my supervisor at work told me about the Blue Buffalo dog food, I decided to try it. That was about 3 1/2 yrs to 4 yrs ago ....
We slowly introduced the Blue Buffalo brand by mixing it with Flint River Ranch and everything was fine - until this past Oct. of 2012. We always purchase at least two large bags (24-30 lbs) and sometimes 3 bags every two weeks. We started out with the Basic Chicken and Brown Rice as my oldest Siberian has life-threatening food allergies. We eventually tested the Wilderness Chicken into their diet and eventually the Salmon in the Wilderness. They were still fine. When the Longevity was brought out a couple of years ago, we eased them into that. They did very well on the Longevity and the Wilderness, so we dropped the Basic and kept them on Wilderness and Longevity for the past two years.
This past October, we went and picked up our usual two bags and when I got it home and opened them - they smelled almost rancid. I mentioned it to my husband as he was not home and was traveling and he said, "Take it back to the store (which is an hour away from our home)." I told him that maybe it was my imagination and would try it. The four of them (we did not have our foster yet) didn't eat it very good that night. After a couple of days, they were back to eating normally so I didn't think anything more about it.
About a week later, one by one, they began to have loose stools. I switched them over to rice and boiled chicken wondering if there was a virus going around and within a couple of days, I reintroduced the food to them and they seemed fine. Then a few days later, it was back to the loose stools. I called my husband and he said, "Throw it away and get more."
I went to another town to purchase the food as I was visiting relatives there and stopped on my way at a Pet Smart. I told them about the last food I had purchased in Mansfield, Ohio and that it smelled rancid and gave my dogs loose stools and they had changes in their appetites since opening the new bags of food. They told me that something could have happened to it in the warehouse. They also told me to return any food like that the next time it happened.
A few days went by and loose stools started developing with all four dogs again. I had only opened the Wilderness Chicken so I stopped feeding them that and opened the Longevity. That seemed to take care of the problem for a few weeks. In late November, the symptoms began occurring with the Longevity. There was no rancid odor but appetites fell off and loose stools formed. I talked to my husband and we decided to go back to the Basics thinking all of the dogs were considerably older now and maybe the other foods were too rich although Blue Buffalo made all the different kinds.
In December, my dogs' appetites dropped way down and they refused to eat much at all. They were drinking a lot of water (more than they did in our 100 degree heat of the summer) and just did not feel good. They were very lethargic and had no energy. The first of Jan., we brought in a foster dog. He was here less than 48 hours and at his 6:00 p.m.. feeding on the second day, he ate the food and 15 minutes later, it all came back up. My dogs were barely picking at it and due to the weight loss from not eating very much, I had begun to add boiled chicken breast (boneless, skinless) to their food along with brown rice. I had had them all in to our vets and she could not find any physical reasons so treated it as a virus and sent them home.
At midnight I met my vet in her office with the foster - he was still very sick and had collapsed. Symptoms were bleeding from the rectum, and vomiting. She tested him for parvo and it came back the next day negative, so that was ruled out. They did find parasites in him so he was treated for that and was put on a bland diet (the foster dog was kept in a separate part of our home away from our dogs, as we always quarantine fosters till the vet gives them a full check up and all shots, HW testing, worming, and a clean bill of health).
The following morning, my youngest Husky became violently ill and was urinating everywhere and vomiting. She never has made a mess in our home in the 6 years we have had her as a puppy, and she lost her bowels all over the floor - blood dripped out of her rectum when she was finished and just ran down her back legs. I called my vet and got her right in and she treated her for a UTI something none of my dogs have ever had.
Late that night, my 7-year-old male had the same symptoms but not so much urination flow. In fact, he seemed to be drinking a lot of water but not having a lot of urine output. In the next two days, the other two came down with the same symptoms - including my 12-yearold. All of these dogs are dearly loved. No one would spend this kind of money on dog food buying Blue Buffalo if we didn't want the best for our pets and my fosters get the same treatment as my own dogs. So I rushed them all to the vets along with stool samples, praying I would be told for the first time since I got my dogs - that they picked up the worms in two days from the foster - but all stool samples were negative and my vet for the first time in 12 years was stumped.
To be safe she treated all of them as though they had gastroenteritis and gave me four different meds for all of them to take to at least take care of the symptoms. But the bleeding from the rectum on two of them continued as did the on and off vomiting and loose stools with all of them. I was losing sleep, so worried and sick over not knowing what was wrong with them. I would switch them all to a bland diet and they would seem to be better and would reintroduce them to the Blue Buffalo and they would be sick all over again. I worried about tumors and cancer and all kinds of things. This went on for almost 4 weeks and then about two weeks ago, I got to realizing that one major symptom that I had overlooked that occurred about a year ago with my Samoyed/Husky was that he had been losing his hair. His coat was dull and brittle and he was slowly losing it. I could see bald patches through it. The top coat was there but the thick undercoat was being shed and was not growing back.
I suddenly thought to search the internet to see if anyone feeding the Blue Buffalo had their dogs having any of the same symptoms. The first search I did pulled up 184 complaints about this feed - so many symptoms were the same or similar to my dogs and some my dogs, thank God, did not have such as seizures. I felt betrayed by a company I had trusted to fulfill the nutritional needs for my pets. Instead, my dogs' lives were put in jeopardy because Blue Buffalo knew their food was causing illnesses and in some cases death and they did a voluntary recall instead of a storewide recall so the consumers did not have to be notified since they pulled product from the shelf.
I remember back to when I questioned why Pet Smart did not have the Longevity in the large bags, and I was told by a clerk that they were repackaging it and then would be getting it in. This was the same time that this company decided to just not notify us but pulled the product. So, were the clerks in the pet stores not aware or did they "avoid" the truth like the Blue Buffalo company has done?
I called my vet when I gathered all my information and told her my findings. She told me to immediately get my dogs all off the Blue Buffalo and to put them on Science Diet. Two weeks later, their appetites are back, rectal bleeding has stopped and energy is back up. My Samoyed is showing downy fluff on his bald spots and all are regaining their health.
I feel so guilty that it took almost three months before I figured out what was causing them to be so sick. I am truly hoping this food did not do any permanent damage to any of their organs. If I would have lost any of the five of these dogs to Blue Buffalo's bad food, I would never have gotten over it.

My 7-year-old Maine Coon cat was eating all varieties if the Blue Buffalo Wilderness formulas. But over the past year, it has been mostly the Chicken formula because it has a pound more food for the same price. I noticed around Christmas that the food looked a little strange. I quickly dismissed any concern, thinking I was buying the best cat food. A few weeks later, I noticed my cat was not acting normal, very lethargic, and licking his lips. I rushed him to the vet, and his blood work was off the charts. His BUN levels were almost 200. He was in acute kidney failure.
We started aggressive fluid therapy, laser therapy and a stomach dialysis. He stayed at the vet for almost a week. During this time, we tore apart the house looking for a chemical or toxin that may have caused this. We never found any toxin, and we never suspected the food. By some miracle, he pulled through & he came home to us. Our whole family, including him, was ecstatic. We went back to life as normal, and continued to feed him BB Wilderness Chicken. He was back home and back on BB for 5 days.
During follow up blood work, we discovered raised BUN levels again. He was back in acute kidney failure. We lost our angel that week. He wasn't strong enough to beat it again. Needing answers, we had an autopsy of his kidneys, and found calcium buildup and melamine crystals that caused his kidneys to fail. This is all to similar to the 2010 recall of BB Wilderness Chicken recipe for dogs. In my heart, I believe that too many cats die from this food. In 2010 there was a huge outrage over this food killing dogs, but the unnecessary deaths of cats continues to be overlooked. They suffer from acute kidney failure and many may die before they see a vet.
We still have the bag of food we we believe is tainted. We plan on having it tested by multiple labs. The emotional stress this has caused my family is unfathomable. I thought I was buying the best food to extend his life into the high teens. Never did I imagine it would cause him to pass at such a young age. I now have such a distrust for pet food. I am trying not to blame myself, but I am the one who picked out the food. I feel that I bought into the hype of such a posh food, and I that paid dearly. I will post more when we find out results. Please spread the word to get people talking about this terrible tragedy.

A new vet, who I recently took my healthy English bulldog to two months ago, suggested that I might consider putting my English bulldog on Blue Buffalo All Natural Grain so that he could be on a better diet. So I went to Petsmart and bought a bag. My English bull (Columbo) ate the first bag with having a lot of diarrhea. But all I could think was that he was getting used to the new food coming off of his science diet and all. I bought the second bag of Blue then I started noticing Columbo wasn't even eating, just drinking a lot of water and having no bowel movements plus throwing up a lot of yellow stuff. I took him to the vet. They took x-rays and found a mass on his spine but said they didn't think it was cancer.
I then took Columbo home with some stool softeners. Still, he was straining to have a bowel movement and was still throwing up. After 5 days, I took him back to the vet to discover he had fluid in his belly. The vet told me there was no hope, that he was dying, that the fluid is pushing on his organs. I truly believe if I never bought that Blue Buffalo, my baby Columbo would still be with me. I put him to sleep on March 1, 2013. And it saddens me that you have 186 complaints on this company and Lord knows how many others who haven't complained and this company is still selling food claiming it's healthy. I hope a lawsuit hits this company and puts them out of business. And yes, I'm very angry and hurt that I didn't read these complaints before purchasing this product.

We transferred our dogs to Blue Buffalo based on the recommendations of several dog enthusiasts. After doing so, I talked to a few more responsible dog owners, and I began to uncover many more uncertainties about Blue Buffalo than I anticipated. To be honest, I'm disappointed by what I've heard from a number of credible sources, and add to that the fact that I can't get a straight answer from Blue Buffalo is even more disappointing.
Concerns: (1) I was advised that Blue Buffalo's chicken does not come from the United States. I wondered, where does it come from? No answer from Blue Buffalo; (2) If Blue Buffalo's chicken does not come from the United States, where do their grains, fruits and vegetables come from? No answer. (3) Others have mentioned that Blue Buffalo has changed hands, and that their quality has plummeted in the past year. I wonder, is this true, and is there a relationship between the two? No answer. (4) Several people report that the look and smell of their Blue Buffalo food has changed in the past few months? past year? Why? No answer.
Blue Buffalo food is expensive. McDonald's food on the other hand is not expensive, and the two companies are at opposite ends of the quality spectrum. If a McDonald's hamburger or French fry can look the same, and be prepared the same, from Vancouver, British Columbia to St. Augustine, Florida, why can't Blue Buffalo dog food - at the more expensive and higher quality end of the spectrum - do the same? Blue Buffalo appears to lack transparency and seems to be hiding behind smoke and mirrors. I hope they come out from behind the smoke and mirrors and disclose the facts. I was a confident Blue Buffalo purchaser for a few days. I'm not a confident buyer now.

I have multiple dogs and switched to Blue Buffalo about two years ago. I have fed them three of the dry dog foods: Life Protection Chicken & Rice Adult, Life Protection Chicken & Rice Senior and Wilderness Salmon (grain-free). I switched to BB because I had health issues with a different (high quality) brand. I never had problems until approximately the past four months. I emailed other friends with dogs eating BB's dog foods (various formulas) and received many responses regarding their dogs having health issues. I switched to a different brand a week ago and everyone is doing great.
All of my emails to Blue Buffalo were received and I received back from them canned replies, meaning it was obvious they didn't want to hear the health concerns with our dogs. All they kept emailing me was to take the food back to the store for a refund and I kept emailing them back that they had serious health issues. I emailed that the kibble looked different than it did six months ago and that it smelled different, and that our dogs (and the dogs of friends) were experiencing these symptoms: eating dirt, eating dirt where other dogs had urinated, eating grass, eating poop, not wanting to eat the food, and that one friend's dog began eating grass, itching all over, throwing up. Another friend's dog had seizures and immediately stopped when switched to a different food.
Their reply was something like that yes, it was possible that I noticed a change in what the kibble looked like because they were having multiple plants around the USA produce the kibble, but that all plants had to use the same formula. I emailed back that I've used over 8,000 pounds of their kibble (I have giant-breed dogs), and that none of them ever got sick before this change in the kibble. I had someone tell me that the company was sold and that it's possible that has had something to do with the negative changes to their foods. I don't know if that's true, just what I was told. I emailed all my friends to make sure they switched to another brand of food as soon as possible to avoid issues.

A while ago, I started my 5 dogs on Blue because I wanted the best for them. I don't even feed them packaged treats. I make their treats so I'm really picky about what I feed them. Firstly, they didn't even want to eat it; they would literally spit it out. I noticed that my dog, Sadie, was drinking massive amounts of water. I never had any diarrhea problems but I didn't notice anything good about it. A while after, we noticed our 11-year old Jack Russell had blood in her urine, so we took her in right away. They found a bladder stone the size of a lemon. My vet asked if I had changed anything, and I told them the food and my vet immediately thought it could be that because they have had a lot of complaints similar to the ones everyone else listed.
We had a very, very expensive surgery that maxed out our cards. We started her on special food for her bladder and everything seemed fine for a few days. Then she started not eating or drinking again. We took her back in and the bladder had ripped. Her bladder wall was so infected the stitches couldn't hold. We had to put her down right then. This dog was my first real dog, one I had chosen and loved. I was only 7 when I picked her out. It was easily the most horrifying experience of my life having to lay with her like that when I thought she was going to be okay. My vet called Blue and has requested their research. They couldn't provide any at all. My vet said to stay away from it and I'm telling you the same. It's not worth the risk!

We brought our healthy puppy home 4 months ago and began feeding him Blue, thinking that we only wanted the best for him. We started him on the lamb formula but soon switched to the large breed chicken formula. He immediately had loose stools, but I wouldn't say it was completely diarrhea. However, the longer I fed him Blue, the worse his stools got. He also would drink a ton of water and urinate frequently (which is a challenge when trying to potty train). We took him to the vet and had his stools checked, and they said he was the picture of health. So I figured he must just be sensitive to Blue and switched him to a different food. He immediately looked better and his stools firmed up to normal. I feel so guilty that I fed him this garbage for 4 long months. I really hope that he doesn't end up with any long-term consequences from it. Please, please don't feed this to your pet!

We have a small cockapoo, whereby as other comments shown, wanted to give our pet the best food out there. He was raised on Science Diet with no problems, yet we had heard that Blue Buffalo was a great/healthy food (we even researched comments online prior to purchase, yet this site never came up). We bought the lamb/rice food and Blue Buffalo dog treat chews. We never had the chance to give him the food as we were using up what we currently had, yet we started him on the chews every other night. Within one week, his stools started to loosen and we noticed he was straining. By the following week, we came home to find accidents in the house. Not only was he throwing up, his stools were getting more liquid.
We made an appointment to get him into the vet on a Tuesday evening. Our vet recommended we take him off any Blue Buffalo product as she has heard numerous complaints of dogs getting liver failure. She gave him a shot to settle his stomach and also a probiotic meant for dogs, and special I/D food for his digestion. He had no fever and by this time, his stool was so liquidy with mucus she was unable to get a good sample. She even found blood in the stool. He was also getting dehydrated.
It's a shame after so many complaints that nothing is done. Most of what I read on this site confirms what no one can confirm - that there is something wrong with Blue Buffalo. I'm very grateful to our vet who was honest with us and caused me to research this product even further finding this site. Again, the majority of the symptoms experienced by the above complaints are exactly what my pet experienced.

We have a nine and a half year old yellow lab/boxer mix. From the time she could eat dry food, she was fed Avoderm. She has a super sensitive tummy, which we have discovered over the years by trial and error (store bought treats are a big no; fancy dog gravies, again a no) so we have always fed her Avoderm. To my dismay, last fall we started having a hard time finding Avoderm at PetSmart. After a few months, in December, we were informed by a worker at the store that they were no longer going to be carrying it. He recommended we switch her over to Blue Buffalo, a super great food, especially for dogs with sensitive stomachs.
Well we listened, though now looking back I wish we had simply searched for a different store in our area that had Avoderm. We slowly switched her over from old to new food, taking about a month to do so, knowing a sudden switch might lead to major issues. While our pup has not had the loose stool issue, she has had many other issues others on here have reported. A few times a week I have to clean up doggy vomit, usually just bile, in the morning. This is normal for dogs with sensitive tummies, but only if they have been given something new which has not happened. She has also increased from three trips outside a day to at least a dozen.
The amount of water she drinks each day has also doubled. Of course, the extra water could explain the extra potty trips, but she is doing both 1 and 2 on every trip outside. She has also gone from a very regular eating schedule (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with the family to not eating in the morning - probably because she thinks she might vomit. This morning was the worst session yet with regard to vomiting - with it almost being along the projectile vomiting lines. It was bad. I started thinking about everything that has changed since the problems started and the only thing I could come up with was the switch to Blue Buffalo.
Well my daughter came home from work this evening to report a co-worker had a similar experience when feeding her cats Blue Buffalo. I did a little search on the internet, came across this site and put it all together. We went to a different pet store this evening, bought the Avoderm she was on for years, tossed out all the Blue and cleaned everything good. We will not be doing the slow change over. She is full on going back to her Avoderm. Are her problems for sure from her food? I don't know, but I am not willing to take a chance that she will continue to go downhill. We had to deal with the removal of a mast cell cancer tumor last year and we know she is older and only has a few years at most left. I do not want to spend them cleaning up vomit or shortening the time we do have left. Hopefully, we have switched her quickly enough to not have any longer term consequences. But only time will tell.

We have a Shiba Inu that is 8 years old and does have allergies to beef. We put him on Blue Buffalo on January 3, 2013 to help him lose weight and because I was under the idea that it was a high quality food. Three weeks into the change (where you mix the old food with the new), he started to pass a lot of gas and he started getting constipated. I just thought it was the change of food, nothing more. He started getting worse and then, about 5 days ago, he started vomiting fluid and started to refuse food. Then, the next day, he wouldn't even drink water. We took him to the vet the next day. The vet ran blood work and said he has a bacterial infection in his bowels. $200 later and 2 injections and 3 prescription and I/D food, he is doing better. The vet would not say it was from the Blue Buffalo, but he said that an irritation from the food could have led up to his infection. Now I am looking at new food. I wish I would have seen this website before I changed his food.

We started our 12- to 13-week-old puppy on Blue Buffalo and, within a week, he started displaying a lot of the same symptoms described in previous reviews. One thing, when the vomiting and the very loose stool and mucus poo started coming out, we took him in asap and he was diagnosed with Parvo, a potentially deadly virus. We started him on a diet of ice chips and eventually boiled chicken and rice for the next several days along with chicken broth flavored ice chip water. This helped him stay hydrated and along with anti-vomit meds and antibiotics from the vet to keep his water down. After four days of nursing him slowly back to his full dosage of food, all chicken and rice, he pooped solid and we started to mix a quarter cup of Blue back in his rice medley. His stool has loosened a bit more since adding it. We are done with Blue for now. Although he has displayed the poor symptoms of a lot of other dog owners who have fed their dogs Blue, I must reaffirm that our pup was diagnosed with Parvo, which does display very like symptoms as others have posted. Hope this helps.

I have two Irish Setters 3 & 8 yrs old. I've been giving them ProPlan for large breed their whole life and they like the food but, recently, I had learned that a lot of dry dog food have additive ingredients that are from China and are not good for our pets, so I did some research about this and found that Blue Buffalo is not only manufactured in the USA but also all the ingredients are natural and made in the USA as well. Not to mention, BB advertises that their food is holistic and of course I want what is best for my boys.
After only one week of adding the dry BB to my dogs' ProPlan, they both have been very gassy and their bowels have become mushy. So I went to BB website so I could ask them why this would be happening and if the gas would subside. Well, I didn't get that far because all I saw were reviews from other pet owners, from all over the country, experiencing the same side effects. So I did what some had said they did and took the remaining food back to Petco and got my boys their ProPlan. The cashier told me that the Blue Buffalo dry food I had bought was not holistic, although I showed her it was printed on the front of the bag and she shook her head and said, "It's natural ingredients, not holistic."
Thank you to all of you who posted your reviews for me to read so I did not keep giving my dogs this food for a longer period of time and causing them more serious problems. Thanks to all of you, you have saved my boys from getting really sick and relief for my nose as well!

I then switched to Blue Buffalo and his poop was instantly bloody and runny. He started pooping in his cage and all over the house. He poops every 20 minutes on Blue Buffalo. Blood and loose stool and the smell will burn your eyes. I thought it was just the transition to a new food but this went on for a month. So now I'm beginning to lose feelings for my dog. So if this is what you want, buy Blue Buffalo.

I'm a senior at MSU that experienced similar problems with my puppy since placing her on Blue. I have a cane corso/bulldog mix that is 14 weeks old. During a trip at Petco, an employee suggested that I should put her on Blue because it was better than the food that I was feeding her (Diamond). Being persuaded, I brought a bag and started to mix the two together then finally placing her to Blue. During that time, my puppy experienced the worst case of diarrhea ever. It began with a few vomits here and there. Later, she began pooping and urinating everywhere uncontrollably! Sometimes, she would poop anywhere from 20 to 30 times a day.
Being concerned, I took her to the vet and the vet sampled her fecal matter finding hookworms. He treated the worms by providing prescription, which worked and her poop was gaining hardness again. I placed her on a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice) for about three days and then slowly begin mixing that with the puppy’s food (Diamond and Blue). The next day, she was back at square one with the loose watery bowls. I thought that my puppy may have self re-infected herself because I'm aware of her eating her own poop. I tried treating her again by purchasing medication from Petsmart, because I thought she may have worms again. Well, that was a fail! Her diarrhea lasted for a few more days and I wound up running out of Blue.
I had submitted a second fecal sample and this time, they found high amounts of clostridium which causes diarrhea. The vet offered to write me a prescription but I already spent a good amount of money so I decided to fast her for about 12 hours and her poop began to become harder (Eureka!). However, my great curiosity lead me to research what caused the high amounts of clostridium. Reading many of your testimonies pointed out what I never suspected. I researched further and found creditable articles stating how Blue causes diarrhea and clostridium due to high protein and other factors that are in the formulated food. Thank you all.

I am sorry that I was sold on the marketing used by Blue Buffalo and switched my dog to it believing I was doing something better for him.

I can't believe what I am reading, because it matches my experience exactly. I hope I have read this in time to reverse the problem with my puppy. I only wanted the best food for him and fell for the suggestions by store employees. My puppy was thriving on Science Diet, but I wanted something organic, holistic for him. After 3 days on Blue Freedom, he peed 3 times and had two huge bowel movements during the night in the bedroom, which has never happened before. He is almost 4 months old and he had been sleeping through the night for a month. Also, during the day, he had bowel movements and peed everywhere. I could not understand what was going on. Then the bowel movements got bigger and bigger and softer and finally, diarrhea. It's 1:38 at night, and I have been up for almost two hours, cooking some rice and giving him as much water as he will drink.
I am switching him back to Science Diet and maybe try to cook him some home food following his vet's directions. Disgusted, I don't see an answer from Blue Buffalo. But I want to thank all of the people who have taken the time to write these reviews. You might have saved my puppy's life. Thank you!

I bought Blue Buffalo dry dog food for my 8-year-old Chihuahua. She had previously been eating Nutro Ultra small breed with no problems. But of course, I wanted the best for my girl so I switched her to Blue. During the time I had switched her, she had some other medical conditions which I didn't relate to her food. She had Pyometra and had to have her uterus removed. She was in the hospital with IVs and antibiotics from that, so when she came home, she was feeling well. I noticed this past week, after about a month or so of being on Blue, that she was very sick - vomiting and not eating. They tested her for Pancreatitis and the results came back positive. I'm certain that the high protein in Blue caused her to get sick. Her ranges were so high this couldn't have been the first time that she had an attack. She was over 5,000! Right now she is doing well on Hill's i/d canned. I don't suggest putting a toy dog on Blue.

About a week and a half ago, I went to purchase my puppy's normal wet food, Wellness Grain-free Puppy, at the pet store. Well, they were all out. So I heard of Blue Buffalo. My sister-in-law had mentioned it on occasion, so I picked up a few cans of it. Over the next week, I noticed odd changes in my puppy: horrible breath, horrible gas and his stomach would gurgle so loud. He started crying in his crate at night frequently which he never did before. I would let him out and he would pee so much and then go poo and have a very hard time and liquid stool. I did not think much of it. He then peed in his crate the other night. This was unheard of for him and has never done it. Then I noticed he had diarrhea in his crate but it was more like mucus. Then all his stools became loose and mucus-like with traces of blood. I got really nervous and called my vet who said to keep an eye on him for the next 48 hours and note any changes.
My puppy continued to eat and drink fine but my once very rambunctious puppy was sleeping more and longer and could not control his bladder. This morning, he finally got up around 10 and started vomiting frothy liquid. I called my vet again and asked if I have made a change in his food. It then hit me that I recently changed him to Blue Buffalo. He told me to immediately discontinue use. He had seen this very often lately especially in dogs and it worried him. He then said to make sure I return the food, keep my dog hydrated and feed him a few home cooked meals of chicken and brown rice. I did not feed my dog anything until this evening but he seems fine. His stools still loose and mucus-like, but my vet said it should go back to normal in the next 24-48 hours and the food probably caused the dog colitis in the puppy.
I am so mad I thought I was buying the best for my puppy and I was actually making him sick. My vet said another 2-3 days and my pup would have been in the office hooked up to IV's for dehydration and antibiotics. I wrote a huge complaint to Blue, plan to return all food to pet store tomorrow and report Blue to the BBB. This is horrible and this company must be stopped. I will be keeping my puppy next to me tonight and hoping in the next 24-48 hours see him getting better. Beware of this food!

Like many of the others who have posted on this site, I was under the misguided belief that Blue dog food was a quality product. I bought a bag of the Small Breed Weight Control for my Shih Tzu. Shortly thereafter, I was awoken one night by my dog needing to go outside. This happened almost every hour on the hour that night/morning. Eleven trips outside later, with each trip resulting in my dog defecating bloody diarrhea and looking/feeling miserable, I took her into the vet. The vet told me to feed her prescription food and gave me three different medicines. After a week of keeping her on meds, and a month on her prescription food, she seemed to be fine.
Not thinking the problem originated with the dog food, I again fed her Blue food. This colossal mistake would make the originators of New Formula Coke proud: she again was up all night/morning recently with diarrhea. Another trip to the vet, and more out-of-pocket costs ensued. My dog is now back on meds and on prescription dog food.
Coincidentally, my mother began feeding her Shih Tzu Blue recently and the dog began vomiting every day she was on it. The vet suggested taking her off Blue and now the dog is feeling better. I spoke with my mother and she stated she also found a piece of glass in the bag of Blue food. I can assure you all I will never ever feed my dog Blue again, and I will make it my personal mission to dissuade others from making such a mistake. It's bad enough that your product causes medical issues that require a substantial amount of money to remedy. But what makes this even more criminal is that your crap product (and I passionately mean that in every sense of the phrase) endangers the lives of our little family members! And pieces of glass in your product to boot? You have to be kidding me!
Please, do yourselves a favor and boycott anything and everything associated with this so-called "product." Please also spread the word and ensure others are aware of this as well.

It's unbelievable that there are other pet parents out there that went through the same thing. We decided to switch our dog Max to Blue Buffalo (end of November 2012) because we want to spoil him a little and feed him the best. We started weaning him off Puppy Chow and a few days before Christmas, was on 100% BB. We came home Christmas eve to find piles of soft/liquid poop. The entire night and the next day were filled with constant trips outside to poop. We felt so bad. He would squat for long periods of time after the first squirts of diarrhea, but with nothing coming out. He was in pain and much discomfort. We did not feed him for more than 18 hours. We gave him water to make sure he did not get dehydrated.
When we finally gave him food, it was bland rice and chicken. His poop was back to normal and so we started giving him BB again with the rice/chicken. His poop became pasty over the next days. We thought it was the treats when we are training him. We've stopped giving him treats. Then yesterday, he had diarrhea again. He has not had any treats for days and the only thing he ate yesterday was BB in the morning. That's when I started researching. I was up all night last night with my dog. He would whine and we made a few trips outside to poop. Today, we gave him a rice/chicken and his poop was semi-solid. I came across this forum because I want to make sure it was BB that was making my dog sick. This food has made my dog sick. Never again!

We started feeding our two poms and one chi Blue Buffalo in Feb. of 2011. By May of 2011, one of the poms had developed pancreatitis. Not thinking anything about their food, he was treated and all was fine again. Over the course of the next few months, I noticed one of my poms was always drinking a mass amount of water. Figuring it was the thyroid problem that both the poms and I suffer from, I let it go as a symptom, that pertained only to him. All thyroid levels checked fine while on meds. Then the other pom, which is part camel, started urinating in the house. That was unheard of. And just a month or two ago, I started really noticing a weight loss on all three of my little couch potatoes.
Everything came to a head Christmas night when the little guy started throwing up and having liquefied poops. Within an hour, the other two followed suit and with terrible gas. Had they gotten into something? No. Had someone given them bad goodie on Christmas day? No. Their appetites were good, but after two days of this from all three with nothing getting any better and the little guy on the verge of dehydration, it was vet time. Tests were run and all three were clean, expect the one pom that had developed pancreatitis again. All three had lost about 2 to 3 lbs doing nothing. After two more nights of my husband and I tag teaming sleeping on the couch to stay up with diarrhea shooting dogs (because of the gas) and running back and forth to the vet between holidays, the only thing we had pointed to is their dog food. We both got on the internet and read and read some more.
There is a lot out there on Blue Buffalo and most of it is bad. That's how I came across this forum. I was amazed to see so many going through the same thing, to the letter, as we were. After hundreds of dollars, a couple of sleepless nights, a ruined Christmas/New Year vacation, and most of all a threat to my fur kids' well being, I have to say I'm pretty pissed off especially since I've put them back on Iams and everyone is again happy with great poops. My vet wouldn't comment on BB, but he didn't have to. After knowing him for over twenty years, I saw it in his eyes. I have another friend with King Charles Spaniels, whose vet flat out told him to stop feeding BB, that is was harmful. Anyone out there have a good lawyer, I'm very hip to a class action against these clowns.

On two separate occasions with two different puppies, Blue Buffalo has made them very, very sick! The latest instance, it only took half a bag of food for my wife and I to realize that Blue Buffalo was killing our dog! He constantly has to be monitored because he can't control his bowels - they're completely liquified and have thick snotty looking white stuff mixed in. He is occasionally vomiting. This is almost the same thing that happened with our first puppy. Both dogs were models of health before getting their food switched to Blue Buffalo.
Now, my 7 month old Presa is doing terrible. I've taken him off Blue Buffalo and switched his food. It's been 4 days. He is still having problems with his bowels and vomiting. I don't know how long it's going to take for his body to get rid of all the toxins in it! These people need to be held responsible for their actions! Not only did my dog cost me $2,000, he is a member of my family and my kids will be devastated if something happened to him! Thanks a lot Blue Buffalo!

About two weeks into the new food, she started waking us up several times during the night with diarrhea, then jumping around the house several times during the day needing to go outside again. I left the house for about an hour and came home to a funky smell in the house. She was so sick she couldn't hold it and went to the basement and had diarrhea everywhere. She has never had an accident even when she was a puppy. I felt really bad for her and I could see her emotion in her eyes. She was so ashamed.
I don't know why I was too stupid to put two and two together so I took the food away and started giving her white rice and boiled beef. That perked her back up in a day and the rest of the Blue Buffalo was out of her system. I gave her back her old food and her bowel movements were back to normal. Her eyes were glossy again and she slept through the night. I will not buy her Blue Buffalo again. I'm sorry I spent $50 on it because I really couldn't afford it with my husband being unemployed. We just wanted her to be healthier for her last few years and it made her sick.

The four of us are complaining about how many times our dogs are going to the bathroom, even through the night. Increased urination as well as bowel movements.
I'm very knowledgeable about dogs. I have raised and trained dogs for at least 35 years, and this is the first time that I have had such a problem as this. Beware of this food. Any dog food that causes severe gas is a major problem as well as increased urination.

Back at the beginning of the month, I went to pick up my two dachshunds from my parents. They had been on Purina but I decided I wanted to spoil them a little and get them this food called BB. The first day I went to feed them this food (Wilderness chicken), they didn't eat it. I figured this was because they were nervous about the move and I ignored it. A week went by and they still weren't eating it unless I tricked them into doing so (mixing rice or some type of people food into it).
I should have listened to my fur babies. Now I hadn't been monitoring their stool but when I took them for a walk, I noticed Auggie with a soft stool problem. Evan had some bad gas. Still not listening to my babies, I got the Wilderness treats (Duck) and they seemed to like them okay until Auggie stopped eating them and turning his nose up at them. On Christmas when we went to my parents, they ate the dog food my parents had with no problems. Recently, my dogs also have been scratching like mad and drinking a lot of water also. I called my vet and told him what was going on with my dogs. He suggested that I take my dogs off this food and wait and see if anything changes.
My dogs are back on Purina Smart Blend where they are going to stay. The treats are going back to Petsmart and if I ever see one of their reps, I will be giving them a piece of my mind. Something is wrong with the food if I had to force my babies to eat it; plus the minor health issues they've had. This is supposed to be top-notch but all I see is animals suffering. BB, if you read these at all, I can tell you honestly don't care about our animals.

We've been feeding our 5 month old puppy the chicken and brown rice formula. At first, there were no problems. But after 2-3 months, she started having the runs and bad gas. We were afraid she might have parasites. Before making an appointment to see the vet, we decided to switch to different brand food. We picked Nature's Recipe Lamb and Rice formula. First night, I mixed the Blue Buffalo and Nature's Recipe half and half. My mistake, because she ended up vomiting it back out. I read that you are supposed to mix the new food starting with small amounts and gradually increase it. Next morning, I made sure to mix 1/3 of the new food. Later that day, her poo wasn't runny anymore. By evening, it was solid. I was amazed. This high end Blue Buffalo brand may work for other dogs, but it didn't work for my puppy. No more runs! Woohoo!

I'm honestly amazed to see how many other people are having the same exact crummy experience I am having with a pet food that is supposed to be top of the line! We switched our two cats from Science Diet to Blue Buffalo a few months ago, because they are supposed to be the top of the line pet food. We want the best for our pets, as does everyone else. We gently transitioned them from SD to Blue Buffalo weight loss over the course of a week and a half (our kitties had previously been on a diet). Sure enough, the awful stools. I attributed it to the food change, even though it was intentionally very gradual to avoid things like this.
They ran through the bag of food, and nothing changed. Horrible, foul smelling stools every day (as an aside, I've worked in animal hospitals for around 8 years. So off and on funky poop is something I'm fairly used to, but this was awful). The consistency was bordering on diarrhea. My previously 'no poop problem' kitties were having dingleberries and streaks. I figured it was the type of food. So on our next bag, we tried out the sensitive stomach blend. Surely, this would make things better. Wasn't I surprised when it made things worse! More liquidy than before and we've had incidences of scooting because their butts just stayed dirty with leftover clingy stools. Ugh ugh.
I usually don't bother to leave reviews on anything, whether it be positive or negative. But reading through these and seeing how similar others' experiences have prompted me to add this to the pile. I can only hope we haven't caused them any serious damage like some other unfortunate reviews show and will get them back on their trusty Science Diet ASAP.

Like so many others who have posted their stories, my cat, the most loving and laidback cat I have ever had, got terribly sick on Blue Buffalo. I couldn't find his normal food and heard that Blue Buffalo was supposed to be high class food, also with great ingredients so I figured why not? After a while, my cat would go in the litter box, hiss, growl, whatever and just act weird. This was very out of character for him. I've never heard him hiss or growl or anything before. I noticed that his tail was wet and upon checking it out, I noticed he was attempting to urinate but it was very little droplets (and coming out literally drop by drop, very slow) and bloody. I rushed him to my vet, who immediately addressed that Blue Buffalo is causing problems with everyone's animals and is even killing some. He had to stay overnight for three consecutive nights, had to be catheterized several times because he couldn't be on his own and was in severe pain.
He had sand/crystals severely and was very dehydrated. I understand that different animals take to different foods differently, but if my vet and many other vets nationwide are telling us to not buy this brand and that this is the cause, I think I'm going to listen. He is back home now on medications and on a special food from the vet and doing much better. Please save your animal's life by not buying this brand! Listen to these reviews because we've been there and know the truth! Unless of course, you do not care about your pet's well-being and are totally fine with spending $1,300 at the vet like I had to (though it was worth every penny).

Chicken and Rice Dry Dog Food (Blue Buffalo Brand) - I discovered a morsel with two feathers sticking out of it that are from the base of the chicken where the splinter part of the feather is the thickest. My friend emailed them and submitted a picture. They offered a bag of treats for compensation! So, I then emailed them, and yep, I got the exact email word for word. It's an auto response to complaints regarding food quality. They stated that it is not uncommon for feathers to splinter their way into food from time to time. Horrible quality control! After reading these other comments that all sound so similar, I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't a cause of many animals’ heath issues and death. This company needs to be sued by the masses whose animals have suffered or died from this product. BB is only in it for the money and not for the health of our pets, or they would have done something after all of these complaints for so long. It outrages me. In the spring of last year (around April 2011), I started my 1-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Bailey, on the BB senior dry food. She had the energy of a 5-year-old and was happy, healthy, and bright eyed. Yet, I still knew she was older and needed to be put on a lower fat diet and I wanted the best for her so I purchased BB. About 2 months later, Bailey became sick, lethargic, wouldn't eat, and was drinking water constantly. My mom and I took her to the vet and come to find out, she had pancreatitis, which had also given her diabetes.
She was so sick the first vet recommended putting her down but the second one put her in ICU for 3 days and luckily got her better but her diabetes was permanent. After treatment, she had to be put on liver medication, enzymes, and insulin shots twice daily. The whole ordeal cost roughly $2,500 plus the monthly cost of meds and syringes. I truly believe that BB is responsible for her getting sick and after reading these other complaints, I know I'm right. My Bailey was like a puppy before Blue. I'm thinking class action lawsuit!

For the first time since they were puppies, they began having accidents in the house because they simply could not hold it. I may as well have given them both enemas! Well I finally made the connection, took them off BB and put them back on Biljac. While it has been about two weeks now, their stools have consistency and form to them again. Well, I gave 1/2 can in morning and she ate it up. I thought, how delightful... Then the 2nd half of the can in the afternoon, she also ate it up! Sitting next to me on the floor, I noticed she had become very gassy. It was not like her at all. I thought it was kind of funny until she got up and ran around the table. I let her out in the yard and she had severe dark diarrhea! She looked so sad. She came in and drank tons of water. That was good, but then I walked out of the room. And when I came back, there it was all over my oriental carpet, dark, watery, liquid stools!
I was up all night with her on the sofa, scrubbing the carpet, letting her out only to see her strain and nothing come out. Then the dark watery liquid started shooting out. I thought my husband gave her something, but he said no, just the new food! Well, I could not believe this until I saw this consumer complaint area about the food. I am going to return the other cans immediately. I have called our vet since I am very concerned about her. Now she won't eat. My husband is making her boiled rice/beef. Hope this helps. I couldn't find the cat food I normally buy and thought I'd try something new for them and see if they like it. I had been feeding Royal Canin protein select but was having a hard time finding it. I bought a bag of Blue Buffalo and not a month later, November 6, I rushed my cat to the hospital. He was fine and all of a sudden, he was throwing up bile. All the bloodwork tested out but he was getting worse throughout the day. The vet put in an IV and gave pain meds and something for nausea. He continued to decline. The vet tried a barium test to see if there was a blockage. The barium did not pass his stomach. We thought it was something lodged, so he decided on surgery to unblock. Once inside, his intestines were blood red and his whole system had stopped. After closing him up, his heart stopped and my 3-year old cat was dead. I'm heartbroken and now I'm mad. Did you kill my cat, Blue Buffalo? He was healthy and only 3 years old.

We just welcomed an adorable 9-week old black lab into our home on Sunday. After three days, I've gotten overly concerned about the amount of diarrhea he has been experiencing. However, we continued feeding him the Blue Buffalo he was eating with the rescue so as not to disrupt his routine. He also seemed terribly dehydrated and just wanted to drink, drink and drink. Today, we began mixing in some Beneful since we had an extra bag, just to see if helped at all. It seems like his bowels are already getting firmer. I'm half tempted to just stop the Blue Buffalo altogether after reading so many similar reactions. I could tell he was uncomfortable with all the grunting he has been doing. So we will stop feeding him this and see how he does. This company should really address this problem. It's horribly irresponsible to brand a product as top line and then see so many adverse effects happening to people's animals. As a responsible pet owner, I'm pretty upset about this but thankfully, I'm sure we've caught this early enough to not see any irreversible damage done. Please, fellow consumers, do not consider this brand for your furry friends.

Do not buy! We have 3 dogs and we had switched our 3-year-old Cavalier King Charles to BB turkey and potato which was purchased at a local Petco (I threw out the bag after opening.) A month into switching his food, he was very lethargic and had diarrhea and vomited once. The next day, he was bleeding from his rear we took him to a pet emergency room. They did a blood test and found he was very dehydrated and his liver was failing. They admitted him and he was in the hospital for 3 days. He was improving enough to go home with home care and oral medication. He was not being fed BB in the hospital. We got him home and started feeding him BB again. When he went for his next checkup he started doing worse and the only thing he had done all day was sleep and eat BB.
Finally, the vet had said she has seen a lot of issues with BB food lately and to stop feeding him the food and she thinks that might have been causing his liver failure. Well we stopped BB food and he is improving. I have been looking online and I have noticed a lot of other people with the same story as me in the last 2 months. I know they do not have any current recalls but I think they should seriously consider recalling some of your food. A lot of healthy dogs are now sick and dying dogs from BB food. I do not understand why this is not being stopped and recalled. They had a major recall in 2010 for too much Vitamin D being in the food and it caused many deaths. I guess the cost of recalling the item is all they care about. Well this whole thing had cost me over $2,500. Do not waste your money on this food! Run the other direction. The local pet hospital and my vet have said they have seen a lot of issues with BB.

After a few days, the other one began having the same problem, and the first one began vomiting as well. We also have several cats in the house, and a couple of them really like this food for some reason (and we can't keep them from getting into the dogs' bowl and eat it). Of course, now, they're having the same problems. It was suggested by my vet to start feeding Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight for my two lab mixes due to them being a little overweight. All of the appropriate testing was done to check for anything physical that could be contributing to their weight gain, such as thyroids. So after several hundred dollars of testing, it was determined to change them from their current dry food (supposedly good Purina brand) to Blue Buffalo Adult Healthy Weight. I mixed the two foods initially so as not to shock their system and after a few few weeks, my one dog seemed to be doing fine but the other has continually had loose stool.
Now two months later, both dogs have very loose stool and have had several accidents in the house - which has never happened before. Now I am at my wit's end so I am taking them off Blue Buffalo and starting all over again. I have tried to contact the company to try to figure out another path to take but have not received any contact from them. BB and the $1,646.12 Vet Bill - I switched my dog (a lab mix) to BB very slowly over the course of an entire month. And at first she did okay. Then in early September when she was staying at my parents’ house for a few days and eating their bag of BB, her appetite began to decrease. For my dog, this is alarming. She has spent the last 9 years eating so fast she didn't have time to chew, so no appetite is a big deal. I took her home with me, and in the morning she didn't finish her breakfast. As I was getting ready for work, she had diarrhea on the carpet. She never has accidents inside, ever.
In the evening, she turned her nose up at dinner. I even offered her one of my French fries, and she wouldn't touch it. I took her outside to go potty, and she acted extremely lethargic. She normally frolics around the grass (literally, she bounces), but this evening she just groaned and laid down. And as we walked back inside, she threw up all the water she had drunk.
I rushed her to the emergency vet, where they did full blood work. She was very dehydrated (clearly); her blood work was normal save for a test indicating she may have pancreatitis. They kept her overnight and did an ultrasound in the am. Her ultrasound showed that she did not have pancreatitis, but her small intestine was thickened (indicating severe irritation). They sent her home the next evening with an antibiotic (Metronidazole), special bland food, and an anti-nausea medication (Cerenia). She immediately began to improve. We could not tell what had caused her to become ill. It never crossed my mind that it was her food until she went back to my parents’ house.
She stayed with my parents again a few days ago and was once again being fed the bag of BB at their house. My mom called to tell me that like before, she did not seem interested in her food. She said "I really do think it is this food. I think you should switch her back to Purina." So, I hopped online to see if anyone else had been having trouble with BB, and here I am. It is now clear to me that the bag of BB at their house is contaminated with something.
My dog's symptoms are so similar to many of the dogs discussed on here. I know Blue Buffalo is what made my dog sick. I have a sample of the food I saved, but I do not have a bag number. I poured the food into my Tupperware container once I got it home so it stays fresh (so no bag). I'm hesitant to send my food sample to BB, because I’m sure they will say, "Oh, it's fine," when clearly it isn't. And there goes my proof.
With the amount of people on here whose dogs have become ill from BB, I wonder if a class action lawsuit is an option. I intend to contact BB tomorrow and see what they have to say. Though from what I have seen on other sites, they don't seem to be answering the phone. My dog was sicker than she has ever been in her life, and as a student, I can't afford a vet bill that big. It absolutely infuriates me that the $60 a bag "best dog food available" made my dog sick. I would never recommend this food to anyone, ever.

I honestly don't know what it is. When I first got my Rottweiler, I started by feeding him Blue Buffalo. He was about 3 months old, and he ate just fine. The only problem is that his stool was very runny. When I went to the vet, he said it could be worms or parasites. He wasn't dewormed at the time. So, I assumed that it's due to that. I gave him the deworming pills and thought he'd get better, but nothing still. I switched to another high quality food brand, and his stool was a lot better. Unfortunately, the Egyptian authority is being very difficult about animal food in general. So there were rumors that dry food will be out of stock for a few months. I got a bag of the food I'm used to feeding him and a bag of Blue Buffalo since it's the only other option I had. I mixed both food to avoid giving him diarrhea. By the time I completely switched to Blue Buffalo, he's been having trouble again with his stool. Constant uncontrollable diarrhea! It's very frustrating. I thought maybe he ate part of a toy or ? and had obstruction. That was not it. They took lab work - liver enzymes should have been between 78-118. Diesel's was 2230. He stayed at the vet's off and on for two days on IVs, meds and then lots of stuff to take over the counter.
We started reading things about diff. dog food. We had him on 4 health dog food from Tractor Supply, supposedly very healthy for dogs. This food along with many others had been recalled but T.S. said there was none at their location but yet, the sxs of liver issue was exactly what was going on with Diesel. We have a seven-year-old goldendoodle. Approximately two years ago, our vet suggested we switch to Blue Buffalo for Bella because of what appeared to be allergies. We were told Blue Buffalo was the best and to use Salmon and Sweet Potato. This summer, we noticed Bella's food looked and smelled a little different but didn't give it much more thought. At the end of the summer, Bella's appetite was decreasing, and our otherwise puppyish dog appeared to have aged years. I took Bella to a vet, and their response was it was the summer heat. Not to worry, she was a picture of health.
Within one month, Bella was admitted to an animal hospital at 10:30 for vomiting and runny stools. Two days later, the diagnosis has come back as pancreatic and liver cancer. 90% of the time, pancreatic cancer is caused by what is eaten by the animal. After reading the reviews on this site and the unbelievable similarity in symptoms, I am convinced this supposed "best of breed" dog food is responsible for Bella's diagnosis. Bella has been home for three days. I have been feeding her nothing but boiled chicken and rice that I make for her. I will never, ever, again feed any pet, any processed pet food again.
In the past day, I spoke with two different pet owners who have had issues with their pets being sick, very sick. Both feed Blue Buffalo. I am so angry. Our pets are at our mercy. This pet food is supposed to be the Cadillac of pet foods. Never again will I trust a vet or a store (Petco) for recommending something they clearly know nothing about. Large breed chicken and rice puppy formula - We recently were given a one year old English bulldog puppy, who was on this food, so we gradually switched our 5 year old Boston terrier to this also. The bulldog came with some food and we used that up before starting the bag I purchased. Since there was much transition going on, I thought the loose stools would clear up. I did think it odd that basically, this food was going right through the dog - within about a half hour of feeding. This was not the case with our Boston, just the bulldog, so I really didn't think it was the food. Luckily we had an appointment with our vet for the bulldog and upon mentioning my concern with the diarrhea and the brand of food, he told me to immediately get rid of it. He said that the food is basically crap and that it is marketed as a designer dog food.
His suggestion was that we switch to a Purina product (they've been in the dog food business for 70+ years), Hills Science Diet or Iams. He said there is no need to spend a fortune on dog food. I went out and purchased a bag of the Science Diet for about half the cost of the Buffalo Blue and first I was happy that our bulldog did not have to go immediately after eating. This proves to me that she is actually digesting the food and getting the nutrition from it. Second, no gas! And now after only having it for a couple of meals, formed stools, not liquid messes as before. That will be the last bag of Buffalo Blue I buy. I just wish I could get my money back for this one. I am glad I found these similar complaints; only wish I didn't put our poor little friend through this.

I feed my dog Blue Wilderness brand and I switched back and forth between the Chicken and Duck and have had no problems. However today, he has had bloody stools and diarrhea for hours. I contacted the company and no one answered so I will call them back tomorrow. However, after finding this site, I'm wondering if I bought a bad batch of food as well. I have been feeding him Blue food for a year (he's a year and a half) and have never had issues until now. I think I'm going to switch brands now though since I've read these other posts. I'm just not sure what to buy because I was told Blue is the best.

I switched my adult dog to BB earlier this year. He loved the first couple bags and ate the food with gusto! My one cat that is a dog food eater loved it too. My other cat who never ever touched the dog food started eating it as well. I thought this has to be great. Then, the vet visits started. One to two times a week, I was at the vet with Scrappy for the last 3 months - dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargic, fever, no appetite, and so on. A couple rounds of antibiotics, x-rays, complete bloodwork, and ultra sounds and thousands of dollars later, all led to pancreatitis, elevated WBC, and liver enzymes are abnormal. The same blood panel that came back all normal less than 2 months prior. This led us to a specialist for a GI tract ultrasound, which showed a problem with his small intestine where it meets the stomach (duodenum). Scrappy went from healthy to knocking on death’s door just 4-5 months after being on this food.
After lots of meds to help him eat (shame on me I used BB canned food to give him his pills!), he stopped eating all BB food (canned and dry). When he would eat the dry, he would spit out all the life bits. I figured my baby was trying to tell me something, so I switched his food about a month ago. He is doing much better, but his follow up ultrasound 4 weeks ago showed his small intestine was getting worse. But he was only on the new food for a week maybe and clinically he has been very healthy since switching his food. I pray to God that BB has not given my baby a death sentence.
If you need more proof, there is something wrong with your food. My cat that never ate dog food but would eat the BB had her first trip to the vet with a nasty GI tract infection at the very same time my dog was at his worst and we had just bought a new bag of food. My parent’s dog that started on BB just after I did just started to get sick a few weeks ago, too: vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. This is not just coincidence. How many more furbabies need to suffer and die before someone steps up to hold BB accountable and for BB to take responsibility for the major damage they are causing daily?! If you're using this food, canned or dry, stop immediately. I suggest supporting your pets’ GI tract and detoxing them.

Blue Buffalo Wilderness Duck Dry #11: This is a follow up to my September 4 post. My lab had more blood work done last Thursday. He has been on 20mg steroid daily since August 3 and an antibiotic, which become ineffective last week. The most recent blood work showed an elevated white blood count and three elevated liver enzymes; he is still suffering from mostly bloody diarrhea - some days like water and other days like pudding - along with appetite loss. He is on a new antibiotic, which has helped just a very little. Ezra is 13 and this has taken such a toll on his health. It is not likely he will survive, but each day, he tries so hard to improve. Until eating from this new bag of food, he had only ever been sick once in his life - in 2001 with Lyme disease.
Don't just post how your dog was sickened by this food. Please, please contact the company. Send them the LOT# from the bag. Submit a claim form along with a food sample (2 cups is required). Make them test this food to determine what toxin is making our dogs/cats sick, and in some cases, causing them to die. When we bought this food, we trusted them to provide a safe product that is marketed as a product that will improve the health and well-being of our pets. They owe us to determine why this food is making our pets sick and killing some of them!

I have been feeding my 10-year-old Lab Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice Large Breed for 2 years with no issues. Recently, I purchased a new bag of food. After eating it for a day, my dog began to have uncontrollable diarrhea. She was having accidents all over the house, even urinating in the house, which she never does. She looked so sad and was not acting herself. I took her to the vet, they did not find anything wrong, but gave her an antibiotic and bland food for a week. The diarrhea stopped immediately after I stopped feeding her the Blue Buffalo.
After a week of bland food, I began mixing in the Blue Buffalo with the bland food and now she has been on just the Blue Buffalo for two days. She started to have accidents in the house again, diarrhea and urinating. She looks so anxious and sad, definitely not herself. I wish I read these complaints earlier. I had a feeling something was wrong with the food because it started right after I opened a new bag. I'm so upset that I have been feeding her something that has been making her sick. We are going back to the vet tomorrow and I'm going out right now to find a new brand of dog food!

As I lie awake on my couch for night four, I decided to google my issue and look where I've landed! I have two American Hairless Terriers, one month shy of 5 years old. Three days ago, I awoke to Bella vomiting. Then within minutes, diarrhea. The diarrhea persisted for 48 hours straight. Bella has always had a sensitive stomach but without any episodes for the past 2 years, so I did not assume anything. I placed Bella on antibiotics and she was fine. Now tonight, thinking her issues passed, I gave my two dogs their BB Freedom adult small breed canned food to eat. Well eight hours later, I awaken to a gel-like vomit on my bed by Bella, assuming it was her that got sick again. I grabbed my other dog, Baby, and brought her to the bathroom to clean her as she was seemingly looking at it and put her paw in the mess. Boy was I wrong.
I put her down to grab Bella and then found Baby in my spare bedroom having diarrhea all over. Well here I go again. Dog two. It is quite obvious that there is a problem. I must say my Baby has a stomach that is so tough that for this to happen, it's bad! I could care less that I have been running my washing machine for three days straight. I feel bad for my girls and hate to have read such sad stories about others losing their pets. My girls are my life, of course, my husband matters too. But these are my babies!

I've always been very happy with the quality of this food and recommend to friends and clients. Over the past two months, I've noticed they will vomit for no apparent reason and one of them has had intermittent diarrhea, sometimes bloody. I assumed they were eating grass so I started watching them closely to rule that out. I also stopped all snacks and supplements, but they're still vomiting! It only stopped after a 12-24 hour fast so it has to be the BB! And like many others, I've noticed the kibbles look different. It kills me that I've been feeding them something bad. Luckily, PetSmart has a great exchange policy. Now, I'm researching and switching feeds.

Blue Buffalo poisoned our dog. In July of 2010, with advice from our Golden Retriever’s trainer, we switched her Royal Canine food to Blue Buffalo’s Dog 24# Wilderness Chicken. (Yes, we transitioned her slowly.) The trainer said it was better for her and like all dog parents; we wanted to keep our girl healthy. And so began the nightmare, mostly Shelby’s but ours as well. The new dog food made her very ill. She started drinking huge amounts of water and we didn’t know why. She’s never had an “accident” in our home and we were taken aback when all of a sudden she became lethargic and began urinating constantly in our living room. As you can only imagine the smell was horrific. Sensing this wasn’t merely a “mistake,” we knew something was very wrong. We took her to the vet, told him what had happened and he told us to take her off the new dog food immediately.
Fortunately, after about a week she was feeling better and her energy returned. However, because the smell lingered, she would occasionally use the living room carpet as her personal pee-pad. In doing research online, we found that this had been happening to other dogs as well. It was bad enough that Blue Buffalo finally recalled the food. The recall notice can be found on their website at **. We submitted our claim as outlined on their website. The claim included the purchase confirmation from Petco, documentation and letter from our vet plus photos of the ruined carpet. We eventually heard back from the company’s lawyer stating that Blue Buffalo’s vet didn't believe us and turned down the claim. The good news is we caught the problem in time and Shelby did recover.
The bad news is the needless expense in getting her well, having professional carpet cleaners try and do their magic (to no avail) and finally having to replace the carpeting (including part of the sub floor) in the living room at a cost exceeding $3,000, a floor that had many more years of use before requiring an update. We have since re-submitted the claim to **, Blue Buffalo's lawyer (at his invitation.) We did not hear anything so we resubmitted the materials this time with a copy to Bill Bishop, Blue Buffalo’s President. We included more photos of the damage as well as additional documentation from our vet. We received confirmation they both received the materials but it appears they have decided to ignore us all together. That was in November of 2011. To this day, we haven’t heard a word from them.
Why would this company recall their own dog food, knowing it was making dogs sick, and then ignore consumer’s claims. It’s not as though we’re suing for a large amount of money. We just want them to reimburse our out-of-pocket expenses for selling a bad product that made our dog sick. I cannot help but wonder how many other dog parents are out there that have had harm come to their dogs with Blue Buffalo who: 1) Never learned of the recall, or 2) Were also ignored and/or turned down. Needless to say, this whole process with Blue Buffalo has been maddening, frustrating and disappointing. I say shame on Blue Buffalo for dismissing a customer’s grievance. Their lack of response for their customer’s is egregious. Thanks.

I have 3 dogs and have given them the BB Wilderness Duck mixed in with their food for over a year - I have rotated & mixed their food for years so I can feed them anything without an issue. In July, my Lab stopped eating his normal food portion, so as a treat I gave him the BB Wilderness Duck without mixing any other dog food. I purchased a new bag from Petco. He immediately got raging diarrhea which continued after I stopped giving him the food and stopped eating altogether. His blood work & fecal exam came back normal. We put him on steroids but the diarrhea continued & became extremely bloody. He is now on 20 mg steroid daily and an antibiotic 2x a day & is still struggling although the diarrhea has somewhat cleared up. I had not given the BB Wilderness Duck to my other dogs until just recently and both are suffering from diarrhea. I now feel either there is something terribly wrong with this bag of food or the recipe has changed and something very dangerous has been added. I am not certain at this point that my Lab is going to survive the serious effects I feel have been caused by this food.

Our 5-year old Havanese had been on Solid Gold Wee Bits for many years. But after learning it had been discontinued, we sought a recommendation for a replacement at Petsmart. The Petsmart employee highly recommended Blue Buffalo, so we went with that. We started slowly, blending a small amount of the BB into the old food, but he loved the BB and would pick that out and leave the BB behind. About 10 days later, he developed a severe diarrhea problem - mostly blood, vomiting and lethargic. We rushed him to the vet who told us that Blue Buffalo was very rich and they had seen many problems in dogs eating BB. They weren't able to get the hemorhagic diarrhea under control or his low blood pressure and body temp up to a normal level. They referred us to an animal specialist hospital, where he is now spending his second night. The hospital says a 3rd night may be required. For a 2-night stay, the veterinary hospital's estimate was $4500. We've already paid the primary care vet $1200 for the treatment performed prior to hospitalization.
Our dog was perfectly healthy before we began the transition to Blue Buffalo. It's hard to understand how a food labeled as "holistic" and "all natural" nearly took my dog's life and has remained on the shelves after similar accounts were reported on this site. I wish I had found this site before we were sold on Blue Buffalo and can only hope to get the word out to prevent others from this experience. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

My sweet 4-year old boxer passed away after eating this food after being pressured by Petco to buy BB because it is the best, they said, all natural. So, I purchased a small bag which he did good during the transition. I bought another bag. Suddenly, he started drinking excessively and peeing, losing control of his bladder indoors! I looked up side effects of BB Wilderness Duck and it said excessive thirst and frequent urination. I called the company and after waiting nearly 1 hour for the call to be answered, they said they have had no bad reports. My vet said take him off it and wait to do blood tests. So, we did. He started getting swelling on his neck in the lymph nodes. The vet did blood work and said he had lymphoma cancer. The protein levels were way too high in this food. My dog was in perfect health before I switched food. Sadly, my sweet Logan passed away just 5 weeks after starting this awful food! Why is it that all these complainants have not banded together to sue this company for harming our beloved 4 legged friends. They should be taken off the market. A couple of weeks ago, my 2 1/2 year old chihuahua mix started getting really bad diarrhea and gas. His poop was literally liquid and you could tell he was really uncomfortable and sad. I took him to the vet and all bloodwork and fecal tests came back normal. The doctor did say his tummy was swollen though. She prescribed Neovast and sent us home with some Medi-cal Gastro wet food and the diarrhea was gone the next day! Thinking it may have been a bacteria in his tummy and that the Neovast cleared it up, I gave him some of his regular BB and what do you know? Gassy immediately after eating it. I took him to the vet and the first question they asked was what I was feeding him. When I told them I was feeding him BB, they told me to immediately take him off of it. They said that in the last year 80% of their chronic diarrhea cases were because the dog was eating BB.
I switched him over to Science Diet and the diarrhea immediately stopped. My two adult dogs were also on BB and since it was so expensive I decided to just finish off the bag before switching them over. Bad idea! My Cairn Terrier Cricket was killed by Blue Buffalo Chicken and Brown Rice on July 5th, 2012. She died from kidney failure. She was 9 years old and very healthy. I had six Cairns until she passed. I called the Blue Buffalo rep in April explaining that all six of the dogs were sick with diarrhea. She said it was because the food was so rich that I should mix the new food (poison) with some of the old food until they got used to it. So, I did. Now she is dead and she died a horrible death, not being able to drink enough water to flush out her kidneys. My wife caught her drinking her own urine off the floor. She had to pee at least 20 times a day. There was nothing I could do for her except make her as comfortable as possible until she died.
I have two other Cairns that now have kidney failure. They are peeing as much as she did. I did some research and found that others had lost loved ones to Blue Buffalo dog food. They had melamine problems in 2007 and 2008. In 2010, it was vitamin D toxicity and now, in 2011 and 2012, it's kidney failure. One dog's death is too many. I want the best for my cats. They share my life. Blue is heavily promoted at Petsmart. A Blue representative is frequently in the store where I shop. I began feeding my four cats the Wilderness formulas and switching back and forth with Purina's Select. I decided to go with Blue for a while exclusively. I tried the indoor formula. They liked it. One in particular really enjoyed it. I picked up a bag of Mature with the indoor bag the next time. I also figured that the can I split between them in the evening would be Blue's brand. I have a small amount left in the fourth and fifth bags. The cat, that was actually gaining weight because he liked the food so much, began vomiting. He couldn't keep water down. His bloodwork at the vet's showed acute pancreatitis. The number they look for that indicates pancreatitis is more than 5.75. The scale ends at 50. His was off the scale. He was in the animal hospital for 10 days. IVs', ultrasound, anything to try to restore him to health. I have been feeding him pureed food and water with a syringe. He has lost more than a third of his body weight. It is painful for him.
When he was first hospitalized, I tried Blue's cat litter made from walnuts. The Blue rep at the store gave it high praise. I have two large boxes for the cats that I scoop several times a day. I put the Blue walnut litter in one box. They used it sparingly, reluctantly probably because of the odor from it. After about eight uses in 10 days (I scoop frequently), the little guy with the white feet used it. When he came out, his feet were dark brown from the litter. The litter was degrading with very limited use. I am surprised that a company would place a product on the shelf that would perform so poorly. The main priority seems to be to market the litter, testing and verifying satisfactory performance of the product was perhaps, in my opinion, a secondary consideration.
The litter's performance gave me a different opinion about Blue products. Petsmart took back all the Blue that I had with no questions. I am grateful that the other cats didn't have the same eager appetite for the Blue products that the cat that I am probably going to have euthanized had. Some animals are more susceptible. However, in reading the reviews that others have written, pancreatitis is a word that shows up too often. Also, with dogs, the ones that ate more had more severe problems. My heart is aching as I watch a little fellow that was healthy, happy, and enjoyed being with me in such pain. He isn't 10 years old yet. It is my opinion that it was the food.

A few weeks ago, I bought my dog's food as I always do (Blue Wilderness Duck Recipe). When I opened it up, there were 90% life bits - you know, the dark bits that are supposed to be the complement to the actual larger kibble. "Weird," I thought. I don't remember this food being this dark. Well, after seeing my dog's BMs and how dark they were, I realized I got a bad batch. It took some wrangling, but Pet Club took it back and allowed me to exchange for a different bag. Even though I switched to a new bag, my Rhodesian Ridgeback is not excited in the least to eat it.
In fact, I've been noticing an increase of him chomping on grass and then throwing up. I believe BB is making him sick! I'm outraged and want to know what's happening with the quality of this food? Previously, I have been feeding him with it for the past year with no problems. Also, just as a side note, a few weeks ago I added a couple of spoonfuls of the BB can, chicken and duck and he vomited. I thought it’s just a bad can. I always referred to her as a "foodie" since she was so excited to eat that she would howl and dance when I got her food. I even had to buy her a slow feeder bowl since she ate her food too fast! About 3 weeks ago, she started to not eat her food. She would sniff it and walk away and lay down. She was more lethargic and did not play as much as she used to. I then mixed her food with some canned Blue Buffalo Freedom Puppy and she would eat it, but only if I hand fed her and put enough canned food in with her dry food. She was not excited to eat anymore and it started to worry me. It was tough to get her to eat 2 cups of food a day when she was normally eating 3. She wasn't vomiting and her stools were normal. She would eat treats just fine. She did develop a rash on her tummy and the vet thought it was an irritation from being in the woods. He gave me a spray to use and it cleared up just fine.
Just 2 days ago, I was cleaning out her "travel bag" and came across an old baggie filled with her puppy food. I instantly noticed that this food looked different from the food that I was currently feeding her. I called the vet and they told me to get a new bag of food first and see if this works and if not, I should bring her in. I then called the pet store and told them the story. They let me return her current bag of food and gave me a full refund. I decided to buy her Blue Puppy Freedom and started feeding it to her yesterday. Today, she scarfed down her food and ate 2-1/2 cups. She's been playing all day and she seems so much happier. She started howling and jumping when she heard me open her bag of food tonight.
I am so happy that she's feeling better and eating her food again. I'm not sure what happened to the food but I will only feed her grain free from now on (it will help with chronic ear infections too). I feel bad that everyone else is having similar problems, but it makes me feel better that it's just not me!

Recently, after purchasing a new bag of dog food, he began having diarrhea. I could not figure out why, so we made a trip to the vet. The vet could not find any obvious reasons why this was happening, so recommended putting him on a bland boiled chicken and rice diet with antibiotics. We slowly reincorporated the kibble back into his diet, and as soon as we gave him about a half a cup, his sickness would come back. The vet recommended contacting Blue Buffalo asap to report and to not feed him anymore of that brand.

Blue Buffalo is a terrible food! I have a 4-year-old cat that has been eating BB since he was a kitten and has never really had any problems. We just recently got a black lab/pit bull mix puppy and I decided to feed her BB as well. She did okay on it at first. Then we purchased a second bag of the same exact food and it looked completely different! A different color and kibble shape and size. She immediately had terrible liquid diarrhea. We returned that bag to purchase a new one and that one looked exactly the same. So we switched to a grain-free version of BB and she continued to have terrible diarrhea. The Vet put her on meds and while on those, she was fine but as soon as she went off of them, it was back to liquid diarrhea.
The Vet continued to put her on meds and said not to change her food just yet. Well, we just went off the meds and not even a full day later, she had horrible diarrhea again! I contacted BB and they just gave me some line about how all of their foods are made from real fruits and veggies and can always vary in color and size and that I could return the bag if I wanted to. They then sent me a bag of treats which I immediately threw away. A friend of mine recommended Nutro Natural, so we are switching to the puppy formula of that and hopefully our poor pup will start to feel better! Never use this awful brand! I will be switching my cat off of this brand also!

I am actually looking into a raw diet since frankly, I don't trust any of these companies.

We have been faithful Blue customers for 3 years of the Fish & Sweet Potato Recipe. On July 13, we purchased a new bag and upon opening it, noticed a difference in both color and kibble size. Our 3-and-a-half-year-old Boston Terrier usually gobbles her food down (we have to use a pace ball), but with the new bag, she would barely touch the food and when she would, her stomach would gurgle after eating. We could get her to eat it by gradually coaxing her, but by the second week into it, she was leaving her food. We bought a new bag thinking it might be an off batch, but we noticed the same difference in color and kibble size and she had the same response but then developed diarrhea. We immediately took her off it, put her on rice mixed with a little of a different brand food per instruction from our Vet. PetSmart was great and gave us full refunds on both bags of food. Within a day, she perked up and has gone back to her normal "gobbling" pace of eating. So far, we see no more signs of diarrhea. There is obviously something off with this food and we hope that Blue investigates before too many more dogs get sick.

When going back to Blue Buffalo, the diarrhea and vomiting started again. We are going back to our Nutro brand which was the brand for our last four dogs and the dogs were fine. We would never feed her Blue Buffalo ever again.

Two days ago, I picked up some Blue Buffalo chicken dinner canned puppy food. I fed it to him that morning and he loved it. He had another serving of it that night. The next morning, he was acting strange. He wouldn't eat the food anymore. He wouldn't drink any water. He stayed in his bed all day. I noticed that right after I had fed him that food, his poop started to turn softer. By yesterday night, it was full on water diarrhea. The only solid about it was the large chunks of carrots that had been in the food. He was also gagging the few times I managed to get him out of bed. He threw up once. He kept hiding under my couch to go to sleep which worried me very much. I decided to do a quick search on the brand, which led me here.
Everything I read here matches his symptoms exactly. Yesterday was hell. I slept one hour last night. I had to keep getting him to drink water from a little dropper. I was convinced he was going to die in his sleep. He didn't eat anything until this morning. I damn sure didn't feed him anymore Blue Buffalo when he finally did eat. I think that some of it is clearing out of his system. He is more active this morning. He is still whining but wants to play so I know that is a good sign. I think his stomach is still upset and I'm waiting to see the consistency of his next bowel movement to figure out what I'll do next. I've read too many horror stories over the last few hours about this brand to believe the people who come to its defense by saying that any pet that is sick must have been given something else to cause its illness.
I call **! My puppy was in perfect health until I gave him that food. Please tell all of your friends and family to discontinue the use of this product. If you're reading this as someone who has a puppy that is showing these symptoms, keep your puppy hydrated! The diarrhea and vomiting can cause severe dehydration. I'm completely livid about this. I don't understand how they are even in business after making hundreds of innocent dogs sick. I also don't understand how they are one of the top brands and why people constantly boast about how great their products are.

After doing lots of research, I decided Blue Buffalo was the best for my dog and I started her on the dry puppy chicken formula. After a few days, she started getting diarrhea and she’s losing some weight. I thought it might be attributed to her shots and deworming and I immediately started giving her rice and it did help. Once she started eating the dog food without the rice, the diarrhea came back. A little while ago, I emailed Blue Buffalo telling them what was going on and then I found this forum. After reading all the stories of pets with the same issues, I am switching the food immediately! I just called my local pet store and they will take back the unused portion even without the receipt.

I have a 10-month-old rescue. We've had him for 6 months and he's been eating BB from the beginning. He was extremely malnourished when we got him, so he was taking pills to help his ligaments strengthen. I noticed a few months back that he would throw up randomly every so often. I couldn't figure out why he was doing that and neither could my vet. I decided that maybe it was the pills that were upsetting his stomach, so I stopped giving them to him. Then about a month or so ago, he started having diarrhea every once in awhile, but it was becoming more frequent. I researched online and thought he must just not be drinking enough water. He also never wanted to eat his food. He would let it sit all day and pick at it sometimes.
I thought he was just being stubborn because he never had a problem with it before. Then last week, he had uncontrollable diarrhea and vomiting one night every couple of hours. That morning, I rushed him straight to the vet and found out that he had a fever over 103 and was extremely dehydrated. My vet didn't really have an answer for it until I mentioned that we feed him BB. She told me to switch dog food brands right away and was pretty positive that his illness was caused by BB.
So I went to PetSmart and a BB rep was there and wanted to help me. I explained to her that I needed something other than Blue. She kept pushing it saying how it is the best brand, even though I told her over and over again that I didn't want it. I finally let her know that their food made my dog really sick and that my vet recommended that I switch. She criticized my vet and then told me, "You need to do your own research.” She was extremely rude. I switched dog food brands immediately and will never buy Blue Buffalo again! Their product is dangerous and their workers are rude.

I have two bichon poodle mixes; female (5) and male (2). My female has had a sensitive stomach since she was a puppy. I put her on Blue Buffalo puppy in September 2007 and have had no complaints until recently. I have even recommended the food to friends looking for a good food. About a month ago, I bought a new bag of the Wilderness Small Breed (they have been on this one since March 2011) and noticed the food was lighter in color and had a lot of crumbs. Within a day or two, my female was vomiting and had mucus-like diarrhea. I put her on bland food (ground turkey, rice and pumpkin) and the issue resolved in a few days. Now both dogs are sick.
I fasted them for a day and have kept them on a bland diet. I figured they must have a bug and made an appointment with my vet. My boyfriend just started to transition his pitbull over to the Lamb and Rice (this dog never gets sick) and he is now sick too! I tried contacting Blue Buffalo, but they are experiencing higher than normal call volume. I'm not at all surprised after reading this page and finding the same thing across all formulas of this food. I'm changing brands today and returning this poisonous food! Shame on you, Blue Buffalo!

We decided to try the Blue Buffalo chicken and brown rice dog food. I have a 9 year rotty. She finished the first bag with no problems. I decided to buy a second bag and after the second day, she became seriously ill with watery, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. She also had very high respirations. I thought she was not going to make it through the night. I put her on a 24 hour fast and know (2 weeks later) she is starting to feel better and stools are returning to normal. I reported the incident to Pet Supplies Plus, my vet and called Blue Buffalo. Blue Buffalo stated they had no other complaints about this food and suggested I exchange the food for a different bag of Blue Buffalo dog food with a different expiration date. Needless to say, I returned the food for my previous brand (Eukanuba) and will never, ever buy another bag of Blue Buffalo dog food. I am so blessed to still have my best friend. I have been feeding Blue Buffalo Natural Chicken and Brown Rice for several years. I recently purchased a new bag, and my girl's visiting. Rotty got severe diarrhea after eating at my house. My own dogs have gotten extremely reluctant to eat. My female pit bull had bad gas for weeks and suddenly became very ill, and I had to rush her to the vets. She was admitted for a high fever (over 103) and dehydration. They did a bunch of tests and found she was suffering from bloody diarrhea. I was wondering what could have made both dogs sick when I got up this morning and found my other dog also had diarrhea all over the house.
I started thinking what could the dogs have in common and started suspecting the dog food. I did some research online and found a bunch of similar complaints about the Blue Buffalo dog food. I will definitely stop feeding the BB, and I am considering having it tested for toxins. I can't believe I have been spending top dollar to buy my dogs the best and that is what is making them sick. Around May 22, I purchased a bag of Blue Basics Salmon by mistake at a Petco I don't usually shop at (my dogs have been on the Fish and Sweet Potato for at least 2 years). Since it was the same manufacturer, I decided to use it. I transitioned them over a 1-week period. First, the female lab got ill, was picking at the food, had diarrhea and vomiting. Two days later, the male lab, who normally has an iron stomach, had the same symptoms. I stopped the food and searched to see if there had been a recall. None found. I wrote to Blue Buffalo and they told me they have a 100% guarantee, to return the bag and I'd get my money back. I did so and purchased the regular Blue Buffalo fish and sweet potato at my local store. I finished that first bag with no problems.
Three days ago, I bought a second bag and immediately upon opening the bag, noticed a difference. The new food was noticeably lighter in color than the previous bag. It seemed odd to me as the "use by" dates on both bags were exactly the same. Anyway, within a day, the female lab again turned her nose up at the food and I had to supplement it with canned food to get her to eat. Today, I found this website and based on all the reviews here, have decided to return the bag and stop using Blue Buffalo altogether. I agree, something is going on with their food. Whether it's manufacturing problems, ingredient problems or what, I don't know.

In April both my Chihuahuas got severely ill after I fed them from a new bag of BLUE Wilderness Small Breed dog food. They both suffered extreme diarrhea (mustard colored) and dehydration. They would not eat or drink anything for 2-3 days. I took them to the vet and my one little boy suffered symptoms far worse than the other. He was admitted and kept overnight. Both are indoor pets and did not have access to anything that could have gotten them sick. My vet advised to take them off the food (which I already did) and keep them on a bland diet of white rice and chicken for a week along with prescribed medications. The vet bill was $850. I contacted Blue Buffalo in May and their response was as expected. My complaint was reviewed by their legal department and resident vet and despite the many pages of supporting documentation and lab work I submitted, they denied any responsibility - case closed.
They said that since my vet did not specifically write "Blue Buffalo dog food is the cause of dogs' illness,” they could do nothing. Of course, this is absurd because no vet is going to write that in their report. At that point, I knew it was pointless dealing with Blue Buffalo. While searching for a new brand of dog food, I visited many specialty pet food stores (not big chain stores). None of the stores carried Blue Buffalo products and when asked why, I received the same response. Blue Buffalo failed to address numerous concerns of people's pets getting extremely ill after eating Blue Buffalo food. I finally found a food my dogs love and have told my friends and family about my experience with Blue Buffalo and their failure to accept any responsibility for an illness that was no doubt caused by their product. They have all stopped feeding Blue Buffalo to their pets. I am so glad that my boys are well and hope that no one has to suffer the same ordeal I went through with my pets.

I took her to the vet and she was severely dehydrated and had "kidney issues" that required her to stay in for a day and be on IVs. All the tests for worms, Giardia, etc. were done and negative. The vet said maybe something she ate. 3 days of rice/boiled chicken then restarted BB. Last two weeks have been constant diarrhea again, lethargic and constant scratching. Our dog weighed 73 lbs on the last vet visit. On this visit, he weighed only 65 lbs. Our vet could not find anything wrong with him. We resolved the diarrhea with a plain chicken and rice diet over a 4 day period. The moment we started to add Blue Buffalo to his chicken and rice diet, the poor guy's diarrhea started over again with a vengeance. We are now back to a bland chicken and rice diet and will be switching him over to another dog food.

I purchased a bag of Blue Buffalo dog food on March 28, and I started weaning my dog off the dog food he was on gradually and was adding the Blue Buffalo dog food to the food we had been feeding him. A few days ago, my dog vomited right after he ate; and what came out looked like white foam. I considered the dog food, but I thought that maybe he ate something outside.
Today, I emptied the bag of Blue Buffalo dog food into the bin where we keep the dog food, and I noticed what looked like mold in the bottom of the bag. When I examined the dog food more carefully, I found numerous large clumps of molded dog food, which had been in the bottom of the bag, and some of the food looked like it had a whitish coating. I purchased the dog food at Petco in Grants Pass, OR on March 28, 2012; and I returned it to the same store on April 20, 2012.

We bought Blue Dog Food, Natural Chicken and Brown Rice for small breeds for our two pure bred Pomeranians, Cinnamon and Midnight on March 23rd. Both of our dogs died on March 27th. This was the only food that they were eating and we always kept our dogs in our care. We contacted the company immediately as our dogs experienced vomiting and decreased bowel movements and we were prepared to either change their food or take them to a vet for assistance as the next best steps, but before we could get them to the vet, they both died quite suddenly together. This could not have been coincidental given that both of the dogs were in excellent health and one was 4 years old and the other only 5 months.
The company has asked us to send the full bag of food and a claim form. We sent a sample of the food as we are hoping that the complaint that we filed with the FDA will help in a more thorough investigation. No family should have to suffer the loss of one dog and certainly not two. We are clearly devastated. They have been less than responsive and we are currently waiting to hear from their "Legal Department" according to a Customer Service rep there. But then again that was several days ago. Unless they are handling an influx of these complaints (which I would not be surprised and would be even more upsetting), we have no reason to believe that more pets will not die as they seem to be taking this report very nonchalantly. Shame on Blue Foods.

We have 2 dogs, a 6 year old and 10 month old who have been fed Blue Buffalo with no problems until 2 weeks ago. We bought a new bag of the large breed puppy chicken and rice, and after the first meal, our 10 month old lab mix got violently ill. She has never had any type of adverse reaction to this food before, and has been eating it since we got her 6 months ago. She experienced vomiting and severe diarrhea. It was so bad, we had to take her in to the emergency vet (it was on a Sunday) to get her re-hydrated (she would not drink any water) and have a few injections to stop the diarrhea.
$300.00 later, we returned home and she was on a chicken and rice diet for a week. We started to re-introduce the Blue Buffalo (at this point, thinking that she ate something outside that made her sick) and she got sick again immediately. We took her in to the vet to be checked again, she was put on probiotics and back to the chicken and rice diet. The illness was absolutely caused by the Blue Buffalo, and both of our dogs are switching brands immediately. Reading the other posts about the exact same situation on this forum is sickening. Why isn't this widely known?

I have been feeding 8-year old Lab Blue Buffalo for the past year. He had bouts of stomach upset over the past year that he recovered from rapidly. We were not so lucky this time. He was violently ill, vomiting over 8 times in one night! We took him to the veterinarian and he was hospitalized for dehydration. No obstructions or diseases were found from the testing. That visit to the veterinarian cost me $650 which, as a single parent, is a major financial setback. I thought I was doing the right thing feeding my dog "quality" dog food.

We had an 8-year-old sheltie that died from aflatoxin poisoning the summer before last year due to the Eukanuba ("Natural Chicken & Brown Rice") dog food that we were feeding him. After toxicology reports and the FDA reconfirmed the tainted dog food, we went on the hunt for a new dog food for our other 2 shelties. All of our research lead us to the Blue Buffalo brand. We had hoped to get both of our remaining dogs on their grain-free Wilderness, but our older dog (9 years old at the time) couldn't tolerate the high protein levels, so we put him on non-grain free "Life Protection Formula" Chicken and Brown Rice. Once we were able to switch them over to the Blue Buffalo, they seemed to do well on it until recently.
In early February, we noticed that our 11-year-old sheltie, who is normally very healthy, began scratching and biting at his back hips and constantly licking his paws. After a couple of weeks of this incessant behavior (along with some other peculiar behaviors like eating grass, etc), I decided to take him to see his vet. According to his vet, he was definitely having an allergic reaction to "something" in his environment. His liver enzymes were also extremely elevated, as were other blood levels that indicated some type of autoimmune response. At that time, the vet put him on a short course of the steroid, prednisone, just to help stop his constant itching problem. Although the prednisone did stop the scratching and biting, it caused other problems for Bailey; and we had to take him off the medicine 3 days later.
Two weeks ago, I noticed that Bailey had started to lose the hair on the top of his nose; and within a couple of days, most of the hair next to his nose was gone. In doing some research on our own, we discovered that many people have been experiencing similar problems with their pets (cats and dogs), and it has been traced back to the Blue Buffalo food.
A breeder, whom we spoke to, told us that he thought he had heard that the Blue Buffalo Company had been sold at the end of last year. I could not find any information regarding the sale of the company, but both my husband and I did notice that BB's television advertising has really picked up since the beginning of the year and that they have come out with several new lines of both food and other items such as cat litter, etc. within that same time frame.
According to our vet (whom we took Bailey back to earlier this week for his nose problem), they are seeing "a lot of problems with both dogs and cats" in their office "that appear to be related to the Blue Buffalo pet food." She advised us to get our dogs off all Blue Buffalo food "as soon as possible." While at the vet's, we also spoke to several other pet owners in the waiting room with their pets, which were experiencing the very same problems--which was why they were at the vet's office. Nobody even suspected that it could be the expensive dog food they were feeding their pets.
We took the Blue Buffalo food (3 bags) we had just purchased in mid-March back to PetSmart, and they issued us a refund, no questions asked. We still had our receipt, but according to the manager, they will take back the food even if you no longer have the receipt. Apparently, we weren't the first to bring back the Blue Buffalo dog food.
My question is who is protecting the consumer? Why are these companies able to get away with this? These poor innocent pets and their owners appear to be victims of these large, greedy corporations which care for nothing but the almighty dollar!

My Yorkie-Poodle mix had been experiencing consistent diarrhea for about four days. When I didn't see any signs of improvement, I finally began getting concerned and took her to the vet. They completed all appropriate blood work and exams to rule out everything. They came back and asked me about her diet and I had explained she had been eating Blue Buffalo dog food. At that time, they shared with me that they have had multiple dogs come in recently who had been eating the same food and experienced similar problems including high calcium levels, vomiting and diarrhea. They did not have enough information to say that was the cause to my dog not feeling good, but they were concerned with her eating the food.
They also shared with me that the dogs with high calcium levels began eating different dog food and within a week, the calcium levels dropped back into normal range. She never really cared for dry dog food, but Blue Buffalo was the first dry dog food she would eat consistently and seemed to like. She did really well on her first bag so about two months ago, I bought her a second bag. That's when I began noticing changes in my dog with her digestive system including occasional vomiting and diarrhea. I then looked on the internet to see if others have experienced similar situations with their dog and this food.
Hundreds of complaints and concerns came up with all similar situations. How has this issue not been addressed with the maker or places like PetSmart that sells the food? Please note, I took my dog to Banfield pet hospital in PetSmart, the very place where they saw multiple incidences with dogs in their clinic yet they are still selling the food even if the vets did not recommend using. Please, please consider looking into this issue!

We have always fed our dog Blue Buffalo. He's been on it for about three years now and we have never had an issues until he ran out of food and we bought him a new bag. Literally one hour after feeding him the new bag of food, he had the most awful diarrhea. We had to take him out every couple hours. It wasn't normal diarrhea it was like water, no substance whatsoever like he didn't just eat three cups an hour prior. We were not sure the cause of this sudden illness of our perfectly healthy six-year old pit bull.
He drank water constantly, could hardly move. He was so sick. It wasn't until we got on the internet thinking maybe his food was bad that we came across complaints like the ones on this site. We immediately took him off the BB and gave him an entirely different brand. Right after switching, the day of switching foods, he was completely better. No diarrhea, no leaky watery eyes. He was back to his old self. I took the bag back to Petsmart today and they assured me it was not the food. **. They said Blue Buffalo is our best brand. Duh? That's why I bought it for my dog but somewhere along the way this food has become dangerous. Do not let anyone feed this to their pets! What a horrible experience.

Taking dog obedience classes at Petsmart led me to discover Blue Buffalo's dog food nightmare! It is heavily advertised to be the healthiest, best, only-natural ingredients, salmon, chicken, no corn, etc. And oh, Blue Buffalo is placed in the front of the Petsmart Store! Of course, I want the best for my pets. Employees raved about its quality. So I bought a big bag of the BB Salmon, wanting to give my dogs the best and healthiest. I do know how to slowly transition my pets to a new food, and I did.
I have 3 dogs, 2 miniature healthy poodles (8 years, 3 years) and 1 large golden retriever/shepherd mix (15 months). The first problem that I noticed was Clay, my 8-year-old healthy male poodle, began to have bright, thick, yellow mucus coming out of the front corners of his normally bright eyes. Several times a day, I was cleaning this out.
The second was Clay, my healthy robust 8-year-old poodle, began vomiting repeatedly. All 3 dogs travel in my van each morning. We drive my 16-year-old to school that is 30 minutes away. Clay multi-vomited his new Blue Buffalo Salmon dog food up on the side my van, hanging his head out the window. This happened for 4 days.
Third was Romeo, my 3-year-old miniature poodle, was having diarrhea--yellow, loose mustard stools at 7am, 8am, 10am, 12pm, etc. excessively. I knew the vomiting and diarrhea both began when I started them on the BB Salmon dog food. (I now think of BB as Bad Bad dog food.) My oldest dog was eating grass and vomiting and slowly becoming more lethargic.
With 3 dogs becoming sick at the same time as the BB food was began, I knew it was the Blue Buffalo Salmon dog food that making them sick. So, I took it back and exchanged it for a different BB dog food that would be gentle on their stomach and not be problematic. I bought BB Lamb! Same thing happened! Lasting several days, Clay has thick mucus oozing from the corner of his eyes, and he's also vomiting out my car window. Romeo has diarrhea inside and outside. I now notice they are more lethargic. Not happy, my 1-year-old shepherd/retriever mix is lethargic, not feeling well, chewing grass, and vomiting.
I called my veterinarian that I've used for 25 years for help! He had me bring in my 3 dogs. He immediately figured out it was the dog food and examined them. He ran blood work on Clay and said we had caught it early and it had not affected his pancreas. He did say since Petsmart opened down the street several years ago, he has had several people and pets come into his office with problems as they begin to feed their dogs Blue Buffalo dog food. His staff was also aware of the problems with the BB dog food.
He told me to immediately get them off the BB and put them on Royal Canine gastrointestinal low-fat food. He said this is what he feeds his dogs, and he has had good results with his own dogs and dogs in his practice. He reassured me that it was also good for large and small dogs.
He gave Clay 1/4 famotidine tablets for nausea/vomiting. I thought I might need drops for Clay's yellow mucus coming from the inside corner of his eyes. He asked me to simply use a saline wash to clean them and to change dog foods and it would likely go away. I did, and it did! I changed to Royal Canine and all 3 dogs got well and energetic, playing together again.
Please, someone help do something to protect consumers and pets from Petsmart which is selling Blue Buffalo! Note that I had also bought BB for my cat, and he recommended I take her off it. Blue Buffalo is a lie!

My dog has been on Blue Buffalo for a couple of years. This last bag has made her sick. After a couple of feedings, she suffered gastritis and was drinking tons of water...then eventually diarrhea. It was weird diarrhea too, because it had zero smell. She never goes in the house, very well trained - this puddle of poo on our floor looked like nothing but the dissolved dog food. I immediately stopped feeding her the Blue (it was Life Protection Formula Chicken and Brown Rice) and just fed her boiled chicken and brown rice I cooked on the stove. She became better.
I thought she was all better and that it certainly couldn't be this expensive brand dog food I bought from PetSmart. Well, now I know it was, because as soon as I re-introduced the dog food, she had that same uncontrolled diarrhea accident in the house. I've taken her off the food. I went to PetSmart and told them. They said to switch her to Royal Canin. If they sell such harmful dog food as Blue, how do I know Royal Canin isn't poisonous as well? I guess my only alternative is to make her dog food myself. Rate my overall experience, huh? That would be 'Disgusted'.

I started my 3 month old Lab/German Shepherd puppy on Blue Buffalo Wilderness. She began episodes of diarrhea shortly after starting this formula. I contacted the company and they said that the Wilderness brand was not appropriate for large breed dogs. I questioned why this information wasn't on the bag for consumers. I received no answer. I was told to gradually transition to the Blue large breed adult food.
After transitioning, the diarrhea worsened and vomiting started as well. In the meantime, I have taken the puppy to the vet several times for treatment, with no improvement in symptoms. The puppy is now 4 months old. I called back to Blue to report this continued problem. They told me that the large breed was the wrong recommendation and I should now switch to their Blue basic puppy brand. I didn't find Blue's recommendations to be consistent and wanted to seek further answers to my problem.
Therefore, after getting off the phone with the Blue Company, I decided to search the internet regarding this problem. In addition, I contacted my vet again and started the puppy on metronidazole. My internet search revealed many of these blogs of people with similar problems and they reported notifying the Blue Company with no results. After reviewing many similar complaints about the Blue Buffalo dog food and severe diarrhea problems, I realized that the Blue Company was aware of this continual problem, but did not honestly advise me. I found this to be a serious violation to doing what is right. After all, the consequences could be fatal to my puppy.
In addition, the cost in vet bills has been exorbitant. Therefore, I contacted them back to advise them that I felt misinformed and misguided on the advice to continue with Blue. They told me that it was probably something wrong with the dog since other dogs did fine on Blue Buffalo, and that the other similar complaints on the internet were related to primarily consumer ignorance. Examples that I was given by the Blue Company was of a person that was feeding their dog 10 lbs of food a day and many others that did not wean their animals when switching to Blue food. I assured them that my case involved neither of these examples.
I would have expected, out of concern for the animal, that they would be interested to explore the possibility that their food was a potential cause, and make an attempt to seek a solution. This wasn't the case. They did not covey a concern for the animal. They conveyed more concern with the continued promotion of their product.

After $117, we put him on chicken and rice. The next day he was doing better so we took him in for a follow up checkup the next day. The vet said he would be fine and to put him back on his dog food a little at a time. So I did and by noon the next day, he had the runs again. I had to take him back to the vet only this time they kept him to do an x-ray and run some test. While he was at the vet, I started looking at reviews on Blue Buffalo.
