Had to cancel a Miami, Fl stay because of a cruise having been cancelled. The owners of the property were prompt with a refund; however, VRBO charge $601 and then gave credit only to post the charge again. When I questioned the action through the property owners, the explanation was that VRBO accounting would take care of the inappropriate charge. When enough time passed without a refund, I filed a dispute of the charge with the credit card company. That stopped the payment. Then I was asked by the property owners to withdraw the dispute and the refund would be forth coming. Silly me; I agreed. Long story short, VRBO still has my $601. I’ll continue to try and get my money but will not be so quick to be cooperative in the future. If I had allowed the dispute of the charge go as intended, I would have my money.

See my complaint and the answer below. HOSTS ARE ALLOWED TO LIE!!! I am deeply disturbed. My wife booked a place Property #390110 Reservation ID ** Eunice ** Months in advance. BEFORE PAYING SHE ASKED if her deposit could be refunded as policy said it could not. My wife was told straight up- YES, she could get a refund. As we had more people decide to join us, we needed a larger place, so canceled a few days later. This was six months advance notice. She was first told she would get a refund as promised, Refund details Payment refund: $1,437.11, then no-she would not. She spoke to your reps, then yes a refund would be issued, but then no. Finally, again yes, but just recently NO-relying on the policy.
The representation that that policy would not be used and she would get a refund was the whole basis for the down payment. Ridiculous. The rental is still over 3 months out, plenty of time to get it occupied. Please open this up and give my wife a refund. "Hi John. We've had a chance to look into this issue. Despite what the host may have said, the cancellation policy for this booking doesn't allow for a refund due to cancellation. Any additional refund would have to come from the host directly, and we cannot force them to give one. I'm sorry, but there isn't any other action we can take in this case."

If you are a homeowner stay away from this company. 30 days passed and I still didn't get paid for my rental. Called customer service and no help at all. Just told me my payment was delayed but no explanation why. No supervisor on duty. Pretty much no help. I'm glad I canceled my account. I called the guests that by the way left me a very nice review and they told me VRBO collected the payment from them back in August. I will have to file a claim with BBB to get my money.

I have spent more than $1,000 on a vacation rental and it is horrible. It is probably my last visit to my son’s home because my husband and I are becoming frail. There was no information in this house about anything. No information about connecting to the internet or information on how the Home operates. The house is nicely furnished but the home itself is like a giant echo chamber. They have a large flat screen tv which we can’t watch because it doesn’t have a sound bar and the echoing makes it impossible to hear the dialog, The man came today to supposedly fix it but nothing has changed.
The beds are comfortable but they do not have blankets. We had to scavenge off of another bed just to stay warm, There is very little silverware and few dishes. For example, there are only four very small teaspoons. The size a young child would like. Most homes are warm and welcoming, even leaving a bit of coffee or cookies or something. This house is bare, so I had to get up at 6 AM to go find coffee. I have rented from VRBO before but this is the last time. I try to call their customer service number but end up talking to a call center in the Philippines. Clearly VRBO wants to distance itself from its customers. This is not my first VRBO rental, but I will not use VRBO because they clearly don’t care about their customers,.

They took my money, and offered no service. I went on a trip to Thailand, and every property was a failure. They never once sent me access information. I could not use any of my properties, at all. They basically stole money from me, and refuse to refund it. This is completely criminal activity. I had to book new hotels, in every instance. They never contacted the owners, or if they did, the owners did not reply to me. I had no phone number access. This was a terrible, horrible, experience. Thieves!!!!

As I live in Phoenix, Arizona and my pregnant daughter (due January 3, 2022) and her family live in Milwaukee, WI, I reserved the unit in question on October 30, 2021 (for 31 days from December 15, 2021 to January 15, 2022) and on that day was charged $268 and then on November 1, I was charged the rest of the price…2796.53. Nowhere in the tiny amount of information I got was there ANYTHING about having to also set up parking, or that there was no free parking included. I got a notice that the day before my arrival I would get the information I needed regarding check-in: i.e. address and how to access lock box. The day before checking in, I got a text at 5:01 p.m. saying the unit was cleaned and ready for my stay. At noon the day of check-in, I got a text that had a link with check-in instructions for check-in any time after 3:00 p.m.
On the day of check in, I got to the site at approximately 3:40 p.m. and pulled near the building to read over the information in detail about where to park and so forth. I was HORRIFIED to see that the information said to park on the street. As far as I could see in every direction there were parking meters lining the streets. The information said that the meters were “free after a certain time” and that the city will give “3 free nights A MONTH (all caps mine) for overnight parking. Any additional nights, you will need to pay for parking.” I saw a parking lot next to the building, but it was a paid lot. I saw that it had monthly rates (although none were listed). I found a phone number for it and called the number at 3:55 p.m. No one answered, even though I CLEARLY called during business hours. There was no way to pay via card to stay in the lot, so I couldn’t stay in the lot. I do not park in unauthorized places.
I drove around and around the block and could not find any parking that didn’t have a parking meter. At 3:59 p.m. I texted the tenant and asked where I was supposed to park. I waited for a couple of minutes and then called and spoke with the tenant at 4:02 p.m. We spoke for 4 minutes and 52 seconds. I said I could not find any parking that was not metered, and that I had called Interstate Parking and no one answered the phone. I didn’t know what to do and was so frustrated and stressed out that I wanted to cry. He wasn’t much help, just kept talking about the street parking, and I kept reiterating that it was all metered and I couldn’t be feeding meters all day long for a whole month!
As we hung up the phone, they texted “most of our guests have no issue finding free spots on the streets, that is the option I suggest…street parking is the most common option, feel free to take any open spot…” and I will “need to call in for free overnight parking. It can be tricky to find parking after 8pm.” And then told me about having to call for a permit and so forth. I said that I read that in the directions, but I was staying for a month, so what was I supposed to do? They replied that the “free street parking really should work. If you have any issues, I will be happy to try and help.” If I have any issues…I WAS having issues and they were doing nothing!
Then, I noticed that there were cars parked right next to the building on both sides, leaving a center lane open for cars to drive through, and I called at 4:11 p.m. and asked the tenant about it. We spoke for 32 seconds and he said, “yes, that should work.” I said, “really? I’m not going to get towed or anything?” He said, “no.” (By the way, the only reason I asked about towing was because of the yellow lines on the drive…but then again, other cars were parking there too. NO WHERE did I see any signs that said, “no parking,” or anything that would stop me from parking where I did. I NEVER park in unauthorized places knowingly.)As I was staying for a month, I had to make two trips to the car to bring my things inside. There is no way I would have been able to park STREETS away (if I could even FIND any parking) and walk to the building carrying my belongings and do that twice.
December 15 and 16, my car was fine. On 12/18/21 I went outside to get in my car to go see some houses (as I am trying to purchase a home for my pregnant daughter and her husband) and my car had disappeared. I had no idea what had happened to it. I thought it had been stolen! I texted the tenants and the VRBO people and said my car disappeared and after a few minutes, the VRBP people texted back that my car had been towed! 4:59 p.m. on 12/18/21 tenants said, “There are also many street parking spots by the school across the street.” 6:00 p.m. on 12/18/21 tenants said, “…our check-in instructions regarding parking our (sic) very detailed & accurate.” I replied with, “check-in…when it’s too late to cancel.”
I never would have rented this place had I known about the parking situation. They don’t even tell you ahead of time. They leave you to fend for yourself…figuring it out all last minute…and if you don’t like it or can’t figure it out, too bad-so sad…it’s too late to cancel and get your money back. You are totally screwed. They need to let people know that there is NO FREE PARKING and that permits are needed for long-term parking and they should be attained ahead of time. Give us options! They took my choice away from me. They forced me to figure it out on my own and lied to me about where I could park and it cost me $355 in money…but also frustration and headaches. My daughter is due with her baby any day and this has caused me so much anxiety that I can’t even think straight today (12/19/21).

Wow. I learned a hard lesson with this one. VRBO does not verify the properties listed on their site are legitimate. Rented a property and tried to get a hold the property owner several times to no avail. VRBO said not to worry and that the owner would contact me 5 days prior to check-in to give me the check-in information and other details.
5 days prior to check in: owner never contacted me. I contacted VRBO and they tried to contact the owner. Nothing. VRBO told me I would have to wait until check-in day and if at that time the owner didn't show, I would need to call VRBO and they will help me with alternative plans. I asked them to clarify the alternative plans and let me speak to someone about those plans and the rep basically said there's nothing she can do and that I have to call back on check-in day.
Check-in day: the property owner never showed. I called VRBO and the rep only said she would email me nearby hotel options. And, she said someone would contact me via email tomorrow about alternative properties for the rest of my stay (30 days). IT's been an hour and I'm still waiting for the email with tonight's hotel info. The big problem here is that you can't talk to anyone with any authority here. It's truly horrible customer service.

VRBO posted photos of another staged unit, and or photos of the unit with previous owners and furnishing. This condo was so gross, 2nd hand cheap furniture, weird framed photos of Barbie and Ken Dolls on the beach in every room. A filthy, stained area rug in front of an equally dingy sofa. Outlets without plates covering the sockets, noisy old appliances. Someone placed a smaller lumpy mattress on an oversized bedframe, making it a hazard to get in and out of. There's a plastic plant plate glued to the bedroom ceiling to catch rain.
We called VRBO and were disconnected several times, as their customer service is in India it appears. Finally, we spoke to a Luis that told us since we called 14hrs after our arrival, not their 12hr limit there was nothing he could do. We sent him a video of the place and photos to show the discrepancy in what we were sold. He didn't care. Only repeated his script and asked if he could help us with anything else before hanging up. He never helped us at all. UGH! Beware of booking with VRBO. They aren't reputable or responsible.

I went to customer service explained my side of the story, to only find out 2 weeks later by a automated email explaining that VRBO will no refund me for being wrongly charged by the host. I called customer service at vrbo to have an explanation to why I still had to pay for damages I did not do. Every time I called, an employee would hang up after opening my file because they did not have an explanation for me. Very terrible experience. I would not recommend VRBO for your next rental experience. They do not care about their customers. Simply awful.

The VRBO business model should be investigated by the government and consumers should think very hard about ever using this service. They have listings on their website but they have disclaim any responsibility for accuracy or availability. Not do they have any minimum standards for hosts’ behavior towards customers. The other reviews posted here delineate the results of their business standards.
1) Hosts can cancel at the last minute and ruin peoples vacations but no one would ever know because reviews are not allowed and cancellations by hosts have no repercussions. Can you imagine a hotel management company letting You book a room on their booking engine and the day before you arrive, they cancel your room? Sorry, the guy who owns the hotel and operates it for us changed his mind. Good luck! 2) VRBO takes your money months in advance of you staying and sits on it, then the host cancels, but they just got all your money for free for months?
These are only two of the very long list of issues associated with VRBO. I would encourage everyone to avoid using this and make vacation bookings through any other reputable company that cares about its consumers and their experiences.

VRBO is refusing to issue a full refund for the rental of a derelict property in which we were not able to spend one night there because of the health hazards. Significant blood stains as well as human and dog hair were present on the linens and mattresses. The owner, Ty **, said that the dog hair was from our dog but our dog is a Maltipoo and does not shed. The photos shown in the VRBO website are a misleading representation of the property. Although VRBO is the listing agent, the company accepted our money and should refund the +200$ due to the misrepresentation of the property that they represented. VRBO is attempting to charge cleaning and service fees when the property was nowhere cleanout presentable upon our arrival. We overlooked many shortcomings of the property but the bloods stained cut or holiday short. The photos were bogus for the same linens shown when the property was first listed (CERCA 2014) are still there in 2021.
This is an irresponsible garbage company that does not properly vet their property owners. You are taking a risk with your safety and funds by using these types of companies. Man, go back to legitimate hotel resorts and save yourself the headache. Not even American Express could get the refund! This would have been a great concept had it not been for thieves. NEVER rent from anyone on Vrbo who has a no refund policy. You can agree to charges, but then they can add charges after you have received a confirmation on the initial agreement. If you refuse to pay subsequent funds, they can legally keep the entire rental cost should you refuse to pay extra or chose to cancel. This is extortion and a complete scam. What was meant to be a quick and fun getaway to view a prospective college for my child, ended up being a cost of $776.30, being billed an extra $180 in fees which I refused to pay, then was made to believe I could cancel the reservation for a refund. Once I cancelled, the property owner said she would refund my money only if someone else rented the place for the weekend.
Although I booked the weekend before we traveled and placed my complaints immediately, doing my best to come to an agreement with the owner without Vrbo stepping in, then asking them for help, I was told by Vrbo that it would be coercion to remove the owners listing capabilities even though they kept my $700+ leading me to believe my money would be refunded. The property owner was as vague as possible, not at all reasonable or clearly communicative, was misleading, and Vrbo was complacent in her poor business standards. I would never recommend vrbo or this property owner in Saranac Lake, NY who states a no refund policy. Rented a Disneyland condo through VRBO with a company called Funtierland. Our initial payment was taken. Then Funtierland sent a “Guest Registration” where we were asked to agree to allow Funtierland to shift our reservation dates one or two days to help them create a three day gap they could book to comply with an Anaheim ordinance. Alternately, we would be able to pay an undisclosed “gap fee” to keep our reservation where it is. Or, if we couldn’t agree, they could cancel. And this might happen at any time. We obviously could not agree, with plane and park reservations having already been made and paid for.
So, I called VRBO to complain. Not only could the person who answered not understand what I was saying but absolutely would not allow me to speak to someone who might be able to support me. She kept repeating that my contract was with Funtierland and I should take it up with them. I did, only to be told I should read the fine print which, by the way, says nothing about shifting reservations at will for their convenience. Bottom line, I canceled. Just received our refund, not the 100% VRBO advertises, but 100% minus a $150 processing fee plus $30 in tax. Do not expect VRBO to support you with your complaints. VRBO, home of fraudsters. If you are thinking of hosting or being a guest through this platform, please spend the next 5 minutes reading about my experience. Earlier this month I had the worst booking experience in my entire life with a platform I have been part of and I helped grow during the last 3 years. I and my partner found a cosy place in Romania to spend a long weekend in October. Unfortunately, due to the covid situation, it was not possible and, unlucky for me, the time to cancel the reservation and get a full refund had passed by literally 24 hours.
I rushed to contact customer support to see if there was any way to still get a full refund, as the reservation was happening in 12 days, there was plenty of time for the host to try and find another guest. As the host was not replying to me over the platform, Customer Service provided me with his name and phone number and said that in order to get a full refund I would need confirmation from the host himself.
I started a conversation with this host over WhatsApp right away to explain the situation and he agreed in writing to give me the refund. Shortly after I cancelled my booking through the platform (following the instructions of Customer Support), the host mentioned that he has no access to the platform anymore and he does not recognise or respect any booking happening through it. In other words, he admitted to owning a ghost rental apartment and he declared it was the duty of VRBO to take care of this issue. With this information, and screenshots of our conversation, (the host first agreeing for a refund and then admitting that his ad was fraudulent), I went to customer service once again, who said that they would contact the host and clarify it. They never managed to reach him, because he was ignoring their calls.
Meanwhile, I was trying to get information about my issue from VRBO. After being actively ignored by email for days, I managed to get in contact with the Escalation department after spending 45 minutes on the phone. I explained my situation (for the 6th time), and they said that despite the host not recognising any activity regarding the apartment and agreeing to a full refund, they could do nothing about the refund from their side. This, of course, went against what the first customer service agent told me - to make an agreement with the host for a full refund.
Now,15 days later, my issue has been declared closed by VRBO and my money still went to a host who “does not do business through the platform anymore”. However, I can still find this ad available in the platform, free to be booked by anybody. VRBO knows this is fraudulent and is allowing this host to get money for a ghost ad, lies and fraudulent activity. On top of it, VRBO did not hesitate in charging me their fees for the fraudulent booking as well.
Now imagine me and my girlfriend would have travelled to Romania, with no sign of life from the host, arriving in front of the apartment and finding out that the host is owning a fraudulent apartment through the platform VRBO. Only then the platform would have taken action against the host and his ad. This is as ridiculous as it can be. If you are thinking of using VRBO for the first time, or you are a regular user, please think twice before doing it. By far, there are better options, where I am sure the company will take care of you and protect you against confirmed fraudsters. Thank you for reading this.

My VRBO host did not respond. VRBO customer service promised me a hotel and a different VRBO but never got back to me. They left me stranded in the middle of DC with a pregnant wife and a dead phone while paying over $600 for a hotel on a teacher's budget. I spent over 90 minutes on the phone with them, but never got my hotel. Terrible experience.

I made a reservation that was cancelled by the host 5 mins later. Apparently, there was a glitch in the VRBO system and my credit card was charged with the full amount of the reservation. There was no way for me to cancel the reservation anymore and I called VRBO twice. The first time, I was told my case will be referred to another department.
The second time I called, I was told about the glick and was told that I have to provide proof of the credit card charge, even if they had all the information and the money. I don't understand why I have to go through this with no fault of my own. It is not my fault that VRBO's system had a glitch. How will they prevent that in the future? I with their customer reps are better trained and understand that the person at the other end of the line is the customer and they should be more respectful.

Two months before our vacation, we have nowhere to go because there's nothing left in our price range and area. I got a refund, but a lot of good that does me now. I can't book another. This is the second time a property I rented has been sold and my vacation canceled. Luckily, the first time, the new owners honored my rental agreement. No luck this time. VRBO needs to make owners honor their contracts with renters. We need guarantees.

I've stayed at Vrbo places before. As long as you are lucky and have no issues you are fine. Otherwise, you are on your own. They actually told us this. We spent almost $5,000 on a beach unit in NJ with my 80 yo mom to attend my nephew's wedding. The post for the unit was misguiding. It is a house. The upstairs is beautiful and the basement should be gutted. Unfortunately, the reviews are for both and are together. It is clear the upstairs unit is rented to friends and family who write great reviews. It does not appear that you can rent that unit through vrbo. The basement unit is what is actually rented out. It was scary to stay there especially during covid. The place had not been cleaned for months. Recycling from previous renter was still in the trash and juel containers, etc. Were under the beds. Sticky stuff on table cloths, bathroom, etc.
I am not a picky person so to show this I'll try to post pics. This place was unreal. So dirty. I was not happy but until my sister, her dog, and I became sick we were going to stay. My sister's dog projectile vomited 3 times the first 12 hours (from another review complaining of ants in the beds we think they sprayed insecticide). Then she and I separately started complaining to our family about dizziness, and foggy brain issues. I actually had to hold on to my husband on the boardwalk so I wouldn't fall. I am not kidding. So bad!! We checked the AC units. It is so upsetting this person is allowed to rent this place out. There were mold spores all over. My sister left after one night and drove 2 hours home to take her dog to a dog sitter, then drove 2 hours back the following day. My husband, mom, and I stayed 2 nights (had booked it for 5 nights) and left.
We contacted vrbo right as we checked into a hotel 30 miles away (Labor Day so all beach places were booked) and were hung up on and transferred numerous times from the call center. My husband calmly told the story 4 times. We were actually a few min late to the rehearsal dinner but I wanted to contact them asap... but...Finally after submitting a written report and sending pictures we were contacted the next day in an email with a denial. I don't know if they even looked at the photos or read that the host didn't reply to us. We thought there would be no option but reimbursement of some kind. We were told since we didn't contact vrbo before leaving the unit we would not be compensated. And that we can work it out with the host... What...? It was not in covid compliance and the ad was misleading. How are we not protected at all?
The host told me she would refund the cleaning fee (she never did) but that I could leave anytime. We asked to show her the mold and blood on the ceiling fan and she ghosted us. Vrbo basically said we would have to sue the woman to get any compensation. I will never book another VRBO trip again. It took me a week to feel better, my sister's dog could've died, and my 80 yo mom was sitting and sleeping on filthy chairs and around polluted air. Unreal. Stay away. They are a company without integrity.

In Aug 2021, my friends and I booked a trip to Austin Tx for a birthday and to also attend A Circuit of the Americas event the weekend of October 22nd, 2021. We bought tickets for the event as well as airfare after we secured our housing On Aug 16, 2021 through VRBO. Around Sept 10th, the property owner contacted us and canceled our reservation after the full amount was already paid for the property; They said that the rental had been booked since May 2021 from another site. We called customer service immediately and although they refunded our money- we were left without housing for the event. Everything was booked, way too expensive and/or didn't fit our group size or needs. I contacted Better Business Bureau and the only thing Vrbo had to say was that it was on the property owner and not them.
They made no effort to help in any capacity. I mean there is a reason we book trips in advance- am I right? My friends and I are out thousands of dollars thanks to this disaster and I am beyond upset with this company. THE OVER AND UNDER - we were offered a home that wasn't available, the property owner accepted the full amount for the home - kept our money for a month and then canceled on us, leaving us having to cancel the trip. This was the worst experience I have ever had and I am writing this review in hopes that people do not use this terrible service as it depleted my bank account and cost us a lot of grief, more work and heartache than anything else. I am a hardworking mother of two and this was supposed to be my big getaway. Please reconsider before using!

Less than 2 weeks before my departure, I received an email message from the owner/host, Sandra **, telling me that the condo was no longer available. Of course, we have family and friends who have already reserved units in that same condo. When I called VRBO to complain, they were very sympathetic and quick to offer help. A short time later, they sent out a very confusing and poorly written message telling me what I had to do. Their help was having me start over, finding another condo, making a second payment, and then sending in paperwork and proof. While this was no fault of my own, I bear the extra burden of finding something. I'm still waiting for a second reply from them. I say shame on the owner and shame on VRBO.

Have been a VRBO client as a vacation property owner for 20 years. Had a guest stay this year who had paid for his August 30 stay in full in mid June. VRBO had full payment on the 15th of June. Due to CoVid the guest thought they may have to change their dates. They booked more dates in 2022 and cancelled their 2021 booking. For some reason, without my being aware, they automatically applied the guest's funds to the next year. The guest ended up staying this year and cancelled next year's stay.
VRBO did not pay out the funds for 2021 and in spite of 6 or 7 phone calls and numerous email to customer support managers the funds are still not paid out... Was told 5 different times they would be paid... Sept 21, 23, 25,26,29... Wasted hours on the phone with customer support... They 'explaining' how their system works... I booked a rental in Marblehead, MA on July 4. That evening of July 4th the owner cancelled my reservation and then raised the nightly price of the rental. I rebooked and received my reservation. A week before my reservation I received a message from the property owner telling me that there was glitch in VRBO's system and they undercharged me and that if I do not pay the remaining balance by the end of that night they would cancel my reservation. I replied that vrbo should be the ones to pay for the remaining balance.
I contacted vrbo who stated they would not pay the balance and told me I would have to. I told the property owner that I would not be paying the balance because I later found out that there were no other available properties in the area and they just wanted to charge more a night. Eventually my reservation was cancelled 4 days before my trip, vrbo said they'd find me another place but that was more expensive and that I would have to pay the difference. Vrbo should not allow their property owners to do this to customers and if they do then they should accommodate the client.

We rented (and paid) for a 2 bedroom apartment in Marina Del Rey, CA. 24 hours prior to check in, the management called and cancelled on us because supposedly the property had a problem and they could not fix it in time, they just basically said they could not accommodate us and would give us a refund. But this was only 24 hours before, so I was horrified, I called VRBO immediately and let them know what had happened. I was on the phone for a few hours that evening, they were supposed to contact us with options but hours went by and nothing. Needless to say, the stress level was going up, a bad night, waking up a few times to see if someone had contacted me via email.
Early the next morning, as they had not contacted us, I called and the person finally told us that they would get us a hotel for that evening and find a place for the following evening. They sent me a couple of hotel options via email and asked to respond with the one we preferred to use, I emailed them back at about 9:30 am. But they would not contact me with a confirmation, I kept emailing and started calling when a couple of hours went by and nothing. I was on hold for long periods of time and nothing. By 1pm I left my house and started the drive, still on the phone, with my sister and my children in the car, we headed that way without a place to stay. I was on the phone with them (on hold) the WHOLE time, calls would get disconnected (one was for over 2 hours) and no one called me back.
We kept calling, explaining the urgency of the situation and NOTHING... At one point they said that it was my fault that the management cancelled because we had 5 guests but the reservation was for 3, but the reservation was always for SIX people, so they did not even check that before they took the "owners'" side (who I am positive are scammers and they NEVER had a property available, so they were just trying to avoid fines or whatever VRBO does to owners as such).
At any rate, we were circling the LA area in the traffic of a Friday evening until 8pm, when we desperately went into a hotel and ended up paying premium last minute fares, of course, from our own money, not paid by VRBO like they had said. The next morning I called again and they had close the case just like that. I really believe they were just trying to tire us out, just return our money and leave us with the problem of finding where to stay ourselves, taking NO responsibility at all. I will NEVER ever use them again, NO one has contacted us since, I've called and have left emails and nothing. I truly hope they NEVER EVER can do this to anyone ever again, it was a terrible experience, they ruined what was supposed to be a wedding weekend celebration.

The fact that the most common rating for VRBO is just 1 star really does speak volumes. I wish I had seen reviews like this prior to ever working with them. While I'm sure there are times when business is smooth and problem-free, the issue is that when there are problems, they have no idea what they're doing. One of the problems is that it seems that the company is run outside of the US and because of this, they aren't quite up to the same standards as a normal professional American company, and because of this, they don't seem to uphold the same values and business ethics that we in the US come to expect from a professional business/company.
What I mean by that is that, I did have a some issues with a rental I made, but when I called customer service to see what could be done, the person on the phone told me that if my case falls under a certain set of circumstances then they could issue me a refund. After explaining my situation, although it did fall under the very set of circumstance he said would qualify me for a refund, he told me to hold one, then came back and make up some weird reason why I couldn't get a refund, then refused to get a supervisor, then hung up on me.
I called back to try and speak to a different representative. They too ended up hanging up on me. Then they sent me an email saying that they couldn't offer a refund. Then they gave me a refund, without telling me, and then called the property owner and told them to call the police since I got a refund and was refusing to leave. So then I had the police knocking at the door and it was just a whole headache. Personally, I'd say avoid VRBO at all costs if you can. Deal with an actual, reputable, professional company. Again, keep in mind that the 1-star rating is the most common rating. That reflects major problems with the company.

COVID hit our house early September so we had to cancel as our symptoms and/or our quarantine wouldn't end before our trip.

I have been so unhappy with my experiences, and mainly because the company does not value its customers, the home owners who bring them so much business. As a homeowner, I have had to call VRBO customer service for many different issues, as you can imagine.
The primary issue is the customer service providers. They make all the difference in one's experience when working with a company to resolve issues. The VRBO providers are completely inexperienced, repeatedly make mistakes, do not speak English in a way that allows the customer to understand what they are communicating or allows them as providers to comprehend the issue, and are extremely rude to the homeowners who are trying to resolve their issue. When I asked a customer service representative to please connect me with management so I could discuss my level of frustration with the customer service team, they refused to do so. On many occasions they will simply hang up on the client and will not call the client back. THere have been times when I have had to contact VRBO 3-4 times in one day because I will get disconnected (through no desire or problem of my own).
The only reason I am with VRBO is because I have not had the time to find another platform. But, I have been telling all of my customers that they can connect with me directly. Lastly, VRBO charges incredible service fees to my clients, fees that are outrageous and provide very little service. Value for benefit just is not there with VRBO and I am eager to leave. I booked a reservation through VRBO in April 2021, for a stay at Champions Gate in November. In August, the property owners notified me that they were cancelling the reservation and refunding my money. The property was immediately relisted on VRBO at a significantly higher rate, and I had to search for a new rental with less than 3 months to go. Can’t believe they are allowed to do that.

This is a summary review of our experience. We requested to directly engage the owner of the property so that we could constructively and respectfully discuss our concerns and experience. The owner never responded. The primary health and safety issues include:
2) Children exposure to mice traps placed in living areas in a manner that could have potentially caused significant bodily harm.
3) Owner policy to not provide any cleaning service during an entire extended stay resulting significant accumulation of dead flies on floors, walls, and windows throughout the residence.
4) Exposure to pinworm larvae on unprotected and unsanitary mattresses in all bedrooms.
5) Substantial drywall dust left on furniture after requested repairs were made to a faulty lighting figure in the main living area.
6) Faulty light fixtures presenting potential fire hazards within the residence.
7) Faulty washing machines resulting in the inability to property sanitize bedsheet, towels, and personal clothing exposed to mice and mice feces.
In addition to numerous health and safety issues the owner failed to provide reliable internet service in any of the upstairs bedrooms or the small workspace area located in the central hallway upstairs. A separate internet login was provided for upstairs internet that was consistently unreliable, which inconveniently required being downstairs to access the internet.
A simple illustration of owner indifference and neglect to this property was captured in a moment with the host at the upstairs workspace. There was a printer on the desk that didn’t have any paper. I asked the host, Tim, if any paper was available. Tim replied, “Oh, this printer hasn’t worked for many years. The owner just leaves it here.” I responded, “Tim, why don’t you just take it out.” It didn’t happen. Probably still there.
A more serious illustration of neglect involved a light fixture at the kitchen bar counter. One of three sconces over the counter flickered off and on. Actually, it was one of a half dozen light fixtures that didn’t work when we first occupied the property. When we asked the other host, Lare, why there were so many light fixtures that didn’t work she replied, “Well we haven’t been told by any guest.” I suggested to Lare it wasn’t a guest responsibility to maintain the property. The sconce fixture was never remedied. It seemed completely lost on the hosts that a flickering light fixture can be an electrical hazard depending on the cause of the condition.
The basis for our request for reimbursement are not these illustrations of neglect but instead the serious health and safety issues. The consistent and prominent presence of mice, mice feces, as well as dead and rotting mice was without a doubt the cause of a sinus infection experience by John. It was one morning about halfway into this endurance stay that we all awoke in our upstairs bedrooms to the awful stench of a rotting mouse in the downstairs living room. Mice feces also littered the master bedroom floor that same morning. It was also the morning that John awoke to a burning sensation in his sinus. Serious burning and discomfort continued for nearly a week following this experience and required a dose of amoxicillin to resolve.
The disgustingly unsanitary mattresses in all the bedrooms proved particularly consequential to our two sons, Chance and Keane, who are ages 4 and 5. At the very end of our endurance stay, both boys developed severe rashes at their rectums. We discovered several days later organisms in their feces that turned out to be pinworms. There is no doubt the unsanitary conditions at Villa Olas was the cause of these pinworms. No doubt pinworm larvae existed in the mattress shared by both boys during the stay at Villa Olas. We are confident of this because of a faulty washing machine hot water valve it was not possible to sanitized sheets used in the bedrooms. Additionally, we discovered only upon removing the mattress sheet to the bed the boys slept in that there was not a mattress cover in place.
About the faulty washing machine, we discovered during our stay that our clothes badly smelled after being washed at Villa Olas. We would wash clothes several times and dry them repeatedly without being able to remove unpleasant smells. At the very end of the stay, we noticed while washing whites only that the water in the washing machine was cold. Upon investigation, we determined the hot water valve connected to the washing machine was not functioning properly. Specifically, the valve was closed even though the lever was in the proper position, which resulted in almost no hot water coming into the washing tub. Only a trickle, in fact. That meant nothing being washed was properly sanitized.
We communicated this to our hosts as part of an attempt to express our concerns respectfully and thoughtfully at departure and it was entirely dismissed. This dismissal of a serious health matter underscores the incompetence and neglect to which we were subject throughout our endurance stay. We should also note we turned the cold-water valve off to the washing machine and washed our sheets and towels in hot water on the day of our departure so that the next guest would not have our experience. It took about a half an hour for hot water to fill the washing machine tub because of the faulty valve. It should be also noted the dirt and feces behind the dryer and washing machine can only be described as disgusting. Another example of gross neglect by the hosts and owners.
And yet another example was the light fixture in the laundry area, which somehow was designed as part of the master bedroom closet. The light fixture was full of flies, gnats, larvae, spiders and who knows what else that had accumulated over too many years. It was a window into everything crawling through the residence.
I think we are going to pause here in our complaint. The stay at Villa Olas was a miserable and regrettable experience not in any way of our doing. The experience was consequential to our health and safety. Any fair, honest, and reasonable person would agree compensation is due to our family. We will not be satisfied with other than an appropriate conclusion. We will continue to post and share our experience through various social media and local influencers, including filing complaints with real estate agencies and agents throughout Todos Santos.
We can’t conclude this complaint without commenting on the awful fly situation at the residence. Flies can be problematic during this time of year in Todos Santos. We experienced a constant influx of flies into the residence. We tried relentlessly to keep doors and screen doors closed during our stay. Near the end of our stay, we discovered the screen door leading to the pool area did not seat properly to the door frame, which allowed flies to easily navigate their way into the main living area. We also repeatedly discovered garbage lids were left off garbage bins, which attracted hundreds of flies to the garbage et al. inside the bins. The residence itself became a magnet for flies.
And, finally, we must note one of the more serious incidents of hazardous conditions at the residence involved the heavy wooden door providing access to the garbage station. Midway during our stay, Alina attempted to open this door to place a garbage bag inside a bin and the door completely and entirely came off its hinges. It was shocking. If Alina hadn’t move swiftly out of the way the entire door could have fallen on her and caused serious harm. As it was, she incurred a bruised elbow and wrist that were sore for a week after the incident. When this incident was brought to the attention of our hosts, Tim replied, “Oh yeah, termites are a problem here.” We also noticed terminates eating away at the cabinetry above the dryer in the laundry room. We noticed because small wood ‘droppings’ would accumulate on top of the drying through the day and night. Hopefully, the cabinet doesn’t fall on somebody one day.
We must say reliving these experiences through the writing of this complaint has been awful. We did not deserve one of these experiences. We caused none of them. We are hosts, too, on VRBO. We would be embarrassed and mortified if a guest experienced anything like what we did at Villa Olas. We ask the owners to take significant measures to better protect the health and safety of future guests at Villa Olas. We give no credence to any reference to having other positive ratings and reviews. We all know there is a significant bias to these reviews. The facts as articulated in this complaint are the facts of our experience. Noting is antidotal. Everything is a factual representation of our endurance test at Villa Olas.

I used Vrbo to rent a property for my family and kids in Bermuda for 2 weeks at $350+/night. Upon arrival, I noticed several dead roaches/palmetto bugs in the unit and cleaned them up. Later that evening, I noticed a live roach/palmetto bug in the bathroom that quickly scurried behind the mirror when I went to squish it. After 2 days at our rental, we continued to see live roaches/palmetto bugs throughout the condo - in living, eating, sleeping and bathroom areas.
There was a window in the kitchen that had large holes in the screen. While eating breakfast one morning, we saw a live rat get through the screen hole and attempt to get in our condo. This took our anxiety to another level, I was terrified at the thought of a rat gaining access to our condo and harming my kids. At this point, I decided to reach out to the homeowner/Vrbo host and voiced my concerns. The homeowner acknowledged both the rat and roaches/palmetto bugs and said they are there and there’s nothing that can be done.
After hearing this, I reached out to Vrbo customer service to see what my options were. I explained the bug/rodent issues and the agent asked if I could send proof. I had taken some photos/videos on my phone and my husband did as well. Since my husband was outside, the agent said the photos I had on my phone would suffice. I sent 5 photos of the bugs to Vrbo and after being on hold for about an hour, the agent came back and said we would qualify for their rebooking assistance at either another vrbo or Expedia property. The agent said I would get an email on next steps but that they would cover the costs if the next property was more. I was hopeful that I could get my family out of a difficult situation and we could begin to enjoy our stay.
I made note of my case number and started to look on Expedia. Since I found there were only a few properties actually available, I called vrbo back to tell them I found a replacement hotel. Even though I had a case number and was approved for rebooking assistance, I had to start the entire process over again. I had to repeat my story and resend pictures. After waiting an hour, I got approved (again) for rebooking assistance. The agent had transferred me to rebooking support and after being on hold for another 30 minutes, I was disconnected.
I called vrbo back again for a third time. Again, I had to repeat my story and share pictures. This time, the agent said he only saw 5 pictures of bugs and that he didn’t think it was a big deal. He said he could request rebooking assistance but based on me only have 5 roach/palmetto bug pictures, he didn’t think they would approved to help me. I told him I was already approved and shared my case number but he said his notes didn’t show that I was approved. This was nearly 4 hours after my original phone call. I was livid. I asked to speak with his manager and after being on hold for another hour, I was transferred to his manager. His manager asked me to resend the bug Photos’s since they didn’t show in his notes. I did this again it the agent told me he had to disconnect as he was having technical issues. He said he’d reboot and would call me back. It took 3 hours for him to finally call me back, it was 3am by this time.
In short, vrbo was useless. I spent nearly 5 hours on hold, being charged an expensive international cell phone rate. I got nothing except for getting a run around and different answers depending on who I spoke with. After calling one last time, they told me I had to work this out with the homeowner directly and there wasn’t anything they could do. They said I could rebook another property and request a refund but they couldn’t confirm I’d get reimbursed. To get to another property, I’d be out an additional $7k. With this, I went out and spent $100 on bug spray/traps. After we returned home, I had to fumigate our luggage and clothing. To add insult to injury, 4 weeks after we returned home from our trip, vrbo reached out to see if I still needed assistance. Bottom line, vrbo is useless. If your homeowner/vrbo host isn’t willing to do anything, you’re stuck. If you’re planning on booking a vacation, my advice is to avoid vrbo completely.

Stay away from using VRBO. Use a site that does not allow owner to rent directly to you. VRBO does not assist you if you use them to rent then have problems or if the property is not as listed. Being that you have to pay before you can even rent, the owners can false advertise then refuse to refund you anything. I rented a house in SC using VRBO. The property was completely false advertised and we had numerous problems while there. The owner refused to assist and then after I posted a negative review, VRBO removed it and said the owner accused me of lying. So the owner can continue ripping people off and vrbo will do nothing to assist and then will remove your negative review if you post. The owners know this, so they just keep doing the same thing to renter after renter. Use another trusted site to rent. Vrbo is the worst site I have ever used to book a vacation on. Never again!!!!

We can only speak with first-line customer service who can only do limited things. For any help with technical or more complex issues, they must create a case and the owner needs to wait to be communicated with via email. They will not call you, no member of management will reach out, they will not apologize for taking an inordinate amount of time to fix issues nor will they apologize if the error was theirs.
Examples are: VRBO inappropriately took our listing down when a traveler complained about having to pay for damages they caused. Eventually, VRBO ruled in our favor but we had to call twice to get our listing reinstated. No apologies for the error. We have been waiting 2 weeks to get our favorable response to a good review posted, with no explanation nor apology given. Please understand that my concerns have nothing to do with properties but rather corporate policies. Rather than paying "insurance" my wife and I paid a damage deposit of $3,500 four months ago for a unit we used in early August. The homeowner reviewed us, as renters, giving us a score of 5 of 5 on every issue and told us one day after we left that they released the damage deposit 11 days ago. My contract with the owner said they had 7 days to refund.
After talking with VRBO I was told that their contracts differ from this and allow them 14 days ... in contradiction to the agreement with the owner. Now I understand that they have the right to set their own policy so we are screwed but figuring we are one renter, for one week, and they hold our $3,500 damage deposit for a total of 18 weeks, I must say they are generating cash flow earnings that are huge!!! I would encourage them to revise their policies to provide for the reasonable return of damage deposits that have been waived by the property owner!

I would love to be writing a positive review about this property, because the pictures looked gorgeous. Instead I am writing a negative review based on the conduct of the hosts. 30 days prior to our arrival the host cancels our booking and just sends a refund notice with a generic message that canceling because a family member is immuno-compromised and scared of Covid. The last time I checked this was a rental for an entire home and the family would not be there at the house. The hosts did not offer a lump sum for incidentals or inconvenience, or anything of the sort. However, if we would have been the ones to cancel 30 days prior we would have had to pay them 1/2 the price of the full stay (over $2,000) for their inconvenience, but because they (the hosts) cancel they do not believe they owe us anything.
I have sent 3 emails to the hosts requesting resolution of this matter and the only response I received back was to "contact VRBO because they handle financials". Well when you contact VRBO, VRBO only handles the issuance of the refund paid, nothing more. The hosts are trying to hide behind VRBO and not own up to their decision and breach of a contract. I would beware of these hosts and property. It is listed as a premier host, but it is not premier behavior.
In addition, VRBO does not allow you to post a review on its site unless you actually stay at the property, so anytime a host cancels you won't hear about it on VRBO review because VRBO does not allow such reviews. They say it does not help the site in a constructive manner. So beware that the reviews on VRBO are one sided and heavily sanitized against bad experiences. Do your outside research on properties. I tried to message the property owner 3x and was unsuccessful. I called the property owner and was told I shouldn’t have been able to book the room and it was unavailable. I called VRBO customer support and talked to them for 1 hour before they booked me in a hotel room for one night. I asked to be booked for 4 nights since that was the length of my stay and they told me no. I had the choice of booking my own hotel for the following 3 night and being reimbursed later or they could find me another VRBO property tomorrow.
The issue was I didn’t want to pay to store my luggage since we had a day tour the next day and have to move hotels AGAIN. I was supposed to check in at 4 and return a rental car at 5 but because of all of this, the rental car did not get returned until 7pm. We had to pay to park in front of the new hotel and then carry our luggage through a mall because there was construction on the road in front of the hotel. When my husband returned the car he was charged a late return fee. I contacted Expedia Group since VRBO was not helpful and they redirected me back to VRBO. VRBO finally agreed to book one more night in this hotel for me.
I do not understand why I could not be given 4 comparable nights in one place. This has been a huge inconvenience for me and my husband. Now I will need to book my own hotel and pay for a taxi to take me to it for the last two nights. This is unacceptable and Expedia Group should be ashamed to have VRBO customer service policies associated with them. I will be taking my future reservations to Booking.com.

Although we love Sandbridge Island and the location of the house we stayed in (Spinnaker), we were extremely disappointed in the house itself and in Vrbo and Beach Pro Realty. After 15 years of renting homes at both Standbridge and OBX, I was not ready for the home that was rented to us through Vrbo and Beach Pro Realty, This home was $14,000 for the week, so upon arrival we expected it to be very nice. Unfortunately we were mistaken. We had to have 5 different contractor interruptions to our vacation to fix immediate issues such as a soaking wet carpet in one of the master bedrooms, which required the lifting of the carpet, cutting out the pad, then an industrial fan blowing for 3 days and then the replacement of the pad.
The biggest problem was the pool area, not only was it dirty, it was unsafe!! There were boards with nails sticking up through as well as broken glass all around the pool area (we cleaned this up). It also included an area of the pool that gave you an electrical shock if you touched it. We were in constant contact with Beach Pro Realty to try to remedy the situation, but were told "this is part of the Sandbridge experience." The owner of Beach Pro Realty offered to compensate us for all of the issues, but never returned our emails and phone calls. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING USING Vrbo and BEACH PRO REALTY OR RENTING THE SPINNAKER, PLEASE DON'T!! You will be extremely disappointed. I hope that no one else experiences this. I had some guests that stayed recently and brought extra people along that I caught and asked for payment for. Same guests had one of their party urinate in my backyard. It's on my backyard camera and my neighbor complained. Then the guest checked out and housekeeping came to clean the house. My guest bathroom toilet seat was broken beyond repair, housekeeper said somebody would have had to have stood on it or jumped on it to cause that kind of damage. So I exercise the option to deduct part of the damage deposit from the guest.
Guest asked for pictures of the damage toilet seat which I sent to him. He said "You can find a $5 part at home Depot that will fix that." I explained that the entire toilet seat was cracked and broken and needed to be replaced. He said "I'm not paying you a dime. You're not getting anything from me and if you say something I will dispute it. We never used that bathroom at all." Housekeeping told me that the bathroom was very dirty and that they had to replenish the toilet paper. So, that bathroom actually was used. The guest said it must have happened when the prior guests were there. This is absolutely untrue as housekeeping knows to alert me to any damage whatsoever when a guest checks out.
Then the guest started telling me about a laundry list of things that were wrong with my property and I replied "Uou should have let me know this at the time of check-in so that we could have addressed those issues". According to housekeeping none of those issues exist. Now I get an email today from VRBO support telling me that my account will be canceled if I don't respond within 2 days. But at the bottom of the email the date to reply was today. Just received the email today mind you. I responded to the email. My family and I reserved this home for a family reunion in South Lake Tahoe, CA. for August 12 through the 17 in March 2021. We made the final payment for the booking in June 2021. Unfortunately, for all concerned, California fires on at least two side of S. Lake Tahoe, created unsafe air quality conditions according to airnow.gov and CNN. Today, August 11th, the entire area is shrouded in thick smoke according to CNN. I emailed Maureen ** (the homeowner) on August 6th to explain the situation and then again in response to her email on August 7th. Below are her email responses to me.
The offer of fall and winter months she made were not doable for us due to jobs. Also, the offer of buying an insurance and canceling the trip, aside from sounding inappropriate or illegal, would not work after talking to an agent and reading the policy. I attempted to get this resolved through Vrbo. An agent told me that they were generally recommending to homeowners to refund under these conditions. That never occurred in this case. Two more calls to Vrbo lead to escalating our case to supervisors. I was supposed to get a phone call back from supervisors in 24 hours, which didn’t happen in either case. In conclusion, given that we as a family stand to lose almost 8k, we are having to spend time and effort to dispute the reservation charges at this time.
Maureen Dillie's (homeowner under Vrbo) email responses: August 6 I can understand your worries, however we have a zero cancellation policy. When you booked the home two months ago, you agreed to this policy. August 6 I believe you can add on travel insurance right now, and cancel to receive your money back without causing a loss to my business. Otherwise, my business partner and I are willing to have you rebook for September or October for dates that are available, at the rate you are currently booked at.
August 7 I understand what the health risk would be and I certainly do not wish to have your group put themselves at risk. During COVID, my family refunded money to everyone, at an incredible loss for us. Therefore we instituted a strict cancellation policy last fall so that we would not suffer from such huge financial losses again. Each group has to read and understand the strict cancellation policy before they book the home. This is to ensure that we are protected from blocking off our calendar, thus turning away potential guests, for guests who will cancel. The smoke is not something any of us could have predicted, however, wildfires are very common in CA and we have had smoky skies from August through October for the last few years. Sadly, it has become a part of our seasons- wildfire season.

We rented a condo in South Padre Island (Saida 1 room 205) from a VRBO "premier host" back in March and when we arrived the condo was a filthy mess. I swept the whole floor that was full of sand and dog hair. We then discovered a horrible smell that came from the living room area rug that smelled like wet dog and full of sand underneath. We rolled the rug up and put it in the utility closet. The curtains had stuff all over them and we found tissue in one of the pillowcases. The beds did not have fitted sheets so they kept moving and then we were laying on just the mattress pad that was nasty.
The 2nd night we were there we washed all the sheets and pillowcases because there was hair all over them. Behind the bed looked like furry animals growing on the trim and wall. All of the cupboards were nasty with a greasy film on them. Part of the stove did not work and neither did the garbage disposal. The second day we were there, I messaged the owner and informed him how bad the condo was and sent him pictures. He stated he would refund me the cleaning fee of $100 and I informed him that was not good enough. He then agreed on refunding me $400.00 as long as I did not post any pictures or comments, He told me he would mail me a check and when I got home I checked the mail for several weeks and no check. I messaged him several times and he insisted he sent it.
I asked him to resend the check and he would not do that with the other check still out there. I told him to do a stop payment on the other check and to reissue a new one and he would not reply back to me. I informed him I was going to post comments and pictures to many online review forums and still has not replied back to me. I called VRBO and they were of absolute no help either!

We had 3 very good VRBO rentals over the last year but the last one was a dump. The address is 96 Black Rock Knolls Dr. Highlands, NC 28712. Property # 1089244. We opened the door and was smacked in the face with the overbearing smell of mold/mustyness. The whole cabin stunk. They had a dehumidifier but they needed 10 more to do any good. They had 2 window AC units but who wants to hear them and the dehumidifier run all the time. We go to the mountains to open the windows and enjoy the fresh air not smell dankness and hear equipment run.
We immediately called the owners and left a message that we were leaving and would like some of our money back since this place is a health hazard. They had VRBO refund $100 and they kept the rest. If you plan on using VRBO, you have been warned about this property. I put a review on VRBO and I was surprised they posted it. The owners replied to my comment stating there is nothing wrong with the unit, but what else can they say. Take if from me, the place is a DUMP!!!!

Vacation Home - Cavendish VT, property # 323696. Home is in a good location, close to amenities. It has charm, however, it is not well looked after which is a shame. The owner is responsive to text messages and calls. He is aware of the issues we experienced through text and photos and apologized for the problems. The fact that he is in NJ and is trying to coordinate cleaners and maintenance from a distance adds to the difficulties. The house has not had a decent thorough cleaning in some time. Upon arrival, we found the refrigerator had grime and blood stains on shelves, we needed to clean the fridge and freezer prior to using. The bathrooms had hair and soap scum in bath and showers. Muddy footprints in one shower area. One bath could not be used due to a faulty stopper, another bath had no plug. Bathmats were unclean, evident by dirt, hair, and perished backing underneath them. We needed to clean the bathrooms.
Dirt, dust and months of grime around toilet floor areas. Bedrooms not well appointed, with 3 of 4 having no dressers. Two bedrooms were missing window curtains. These are needed for privacy and eliminating the sunlight, especially with children going to bed prior to sunset and sleeping past sunrise. Old flannel sheets on beds, which are not recommended in July! Dirty socks under master bed, along with months of dust and dirt. Cobwebs on walls, ceilings, and window wells, a number of dead flies in cobwebs and window wells. Spiders in most rooms. Everyone had to wash their feet after 2 hours due to the dirty state of all the floors. We cleaned and vacuumed them. We live in a rural area, similar to this home, however, this home has an ant issue (large black and small sugar ants are everywhere). Crawling into handbags, on luggage, table tops, kitchen!!!
We made sure there was never any food left out and that surfaces were washed and sanitized. There were too many small flies to count in the bathroom downstairs. They were all over the sink, shower area, granddaughters' toothbrushes. The BBQ grill was not cleaned, old food, grease and dirt on the cooking grates. Very little propane in the tank. The list goes on! Our vacation was to provide some much needed family time for our 2 daughters, 4 granddaughters, my wife and I. We had hoped to stay for the entire time, however, we checked out early due to the unsanitary conditions. Our daughters were upset, and our granddaughters were extremely disappointed that our special family time together was spoiled and ended early. We called VRBO and they told us to write a review (passing the buck!). VRBO have never called or contacted us to date!!

We rented our house through VRBO. The tenant came, took the keys, he stayed and stated he was paying using money from the insurance company b/c his house was in need of repair. American Express and VRBO took the side of the tenant and they are now taking the money back, despite the fact that we cannot go back in time and re-rent the house to someone else after the agreement was signed.
Case: The tenant is a resident of the same county as our house, they requested to rent the house b/c their house was under renovation and stated that the rent was covered by the insurance company. The insurance company allotted them money to find a rental, as their house was being repaired. The tenant came to inspect our house, they were happy with the house and took possession with a no cancelation clause. The tenant took possession of our house and they notified us shortly after, maybe a week, that they were not happy with the house. They left our house and requested the money they received from the insurance company back to them. They now have pocketed the insurance money. To me this sounds like insurance fraud... Are we the charge back house!? Like all people who get money from insurance can pocket the money and commit the same fraud..!?

I booked a property in April 2021 to go on a trip to Hilton Head Island the first week in August. I Was in constant contact with the owner asking questions on the home and mailing sure it had certain amenities. VRBO took the first payment no problem of $3000 and said my reservation was secure so my family and I started to plan our beach trip. The second payment was due and I went to go make it and I couldn't make it and it said “the house is no longer available, pick a different property.” I called VRBO customer care and the woman said, "Oh that’s not a problem. It should clear up in 12 hours." I said, "Are you sure? Because I don’t want to lose the property." She assured me it would be fine. Then, a week went by and I still could not pay.
I was trying to contact the property host, no response, his phone number was disconnected. I called VRBO customer care and they told me I was “not to worry” and gave me another number to reach the property owner. The phone number just kept ringing and ringing. One week before we were about to leave I finally got a response from the property host Steve and he said “it appears the house was double booked.” That was the explanation so I called VRBO customer care again, my phone was call was dropped. I had to explain the same thing to another customer care Agent. They will not let you go to any other department so I had to stay with customer care. They gave me a case number and told me to let the property owner message me in 48 hours.
Well, I waited and we are going into the week we are going to be leaving. Still no answer, 4 days of pure torture wondering if we had the house or not. Called customer care again, they said they “do not see it double booked, but cannot promise it was not booked with another site?” Lo and behold I received an email with my full refund being processed and no explanation from the property host. We are out of our beach family vacation. We rented the house because we could bring a dog and it also had a private pool to come back from the beach 3 houses away.
VRBO says they guarantee you a house around the “same price with same amenities.” Well, the day of my refund I called VRBO customer care with my case number, they searched the entire state of South Carolina and I believe the girl I had Never heard of it. She was like “can you spell that for me?” It was not helpful at all, I asked if she could transfer me to a higher department and she said “they would basically do the same thing.” Basically she gave me other properties not near the beach or even pet friendly.
I will never use this site again and I definitely am telling people about this experience because in all my years booking trips I have never had an experience like this. It is the week we are supposed to be at the beach and we are sitting at home now because of this. 4 kids, 4 adults Did not get to go to the beach because property hosts with VRBO can cancel at any time and have no consequences. Terrible service, terrible experience altogether.

On 24 June I booked a property through VRBO for a stay in Orlando with Casiola Vacation Homes from 26 July - 9 August. When I arrived the property was filthy, sheets bloodied and soiled and I made a determination that I had to leave immediately for the health and wellbeing of my family especially since I had small children. I contacted VRBO immediately but they were not helpful. After several hours and as many calls on the phone I was told I had to contact the host myself as they could not issue a refund as the Host was a "premier host" and they had to process it themselves.
I was astonished because there is an expectation that when you book through platforms such as VRBO etc. that it acts as a "cushion" between yourself and the property host in the event there is an issue they will act on your behalf. The entire idea of such platforms is that they provide security from unscrupulous behavior, this is NOT the case with VRBO. I ended up contacting the Host myself and they gave me a partial refund.
When I was alerted by my credit card company that I did not get all of the money spent on the rental which was well over $3000 I immediately contacted the Host and VRBO only to be told by the Host that they were withholding my money for two nights (when I left immediately) and a cleaning fee (this in itself was laughable); VRBO then told me they could not refund me my $311 because I was only given a "partial refund" by the Host. I was not directed to that Policy nor did I see it on their website.
I booked this rental because it had all 5 star reviews. Since Covid, cleanliness has been a top priority for me, so when I saw the photos and the reviews which all said it was clean and in a good area I decided to move ahead with the booking. However, I should have noted the red flags from the inception they did not list the Host. All it said was "premier host", had they listed the Host I could have undertaken a review of this Company and I would have ran away from this listing. A simple search engine search would reveal the poor ratings for Casiola, they have bad reviews for cleanliness and unscrupulous practices on several platforms and as many claims on BBB.
I am disappointed with VRBO and the handling of my matter. They did absolutely nothing to help me and now they too are withholding money when I called them also on the day of check-in and told them of my issues and sent photographic evidence. I have been given NO support by them, and this is the last time I would be using their service.

This has been the worst experience of planning a trip through Vrbo with this owner. This was to be my first trip through Vrbo and with this owner. I had a death in the family around the time I was booked for the property. I contacted the owner to info him of this and to reschedule my booking dates. I was told that it would be fine and that I did not need any additional paper work as long as the he the owner agreed to the dates of rescheduling and those dates was available. I contacted the owner the next month to ask for dates in July. The owner told me the dates would be ok. So I contacted him again a couple of months before the dates I asked for as the rescheduled dates he told me he had someone else booked for those dates and basically told me I forfeit my money and he would have never agreed to me rescheduled. (Which I have messages from him on this that proves he did agree.)
I told him I would get in contact with Vrbo to handle this. He told me not to call. It won't change anything. I called anyway, and have been giving the run around as Vrbo don't want to enforce the owner to refund me my money as he has proving his self to be unreliable with his words. Vrbo will not allow me to talk to a manager, only customer service representative. In which that I have to deal with the owner. I have called Vrbo on multiple attempts to get them to rectify this situation with me and this owner to no avail. This is an on going situation, I believe my next step will be to sell legal help against this owner and also Vrbo. Book with this owner with caution!

I rented a vacation rental for thousands of dollars and was scammed, which devastated me and my family. We lost so much money because the house was nothing like what was advertised, which caused us to call VRBO to complain. They advised me to leave the house, allow them to do an investigation and pay for another property. He told me that he could clearly see it was a true misrepresentation based on my pictures and the advertised pictures and description, and that I would get my money back. He assured me several times I would and did not need to worry and to follow up in a week or two. I followed up this week, only to be told that the property was rented through a property management company outside of VRBO so there was nothing they could do for me!
They told me to contact the owner, which I had already done. I couldn’t believe it! Especially after their agent directed me to leave the property and pay for another!!! So now I am out more than $5500 and moved properties three times in four days with 2 kids and a dog. I have cried and cried over this and am completely heartbroken, and we didn’t even get to take the kids to Universal like we had planned because it was such a horrible and stressful trip and we spent our three days in the car. I will never use VRBO again, and the owner will not refund my money even though they agreed to originally for all but one night per the VRBO traveler care agent.

She went on to say that we would not be refunded our deposit and on top of that would be charged an additional $15. Later that night the owner sent me a message to insure there would be no partying going on during the visit. I sent an email back letting her know we would not be and we are very quiet and low key. I never heard back for 3 days until vrbo called me to let me know that the owner was wanting to cancel due to a double booking. The representative from vrbo said the owner is not able to cancel that I have the right to the house since she double booked it and don’t have her calendar up to date. Vrbo said they would call me back and let me know what she said. I never heard back from them so I called them. The representative said that nobody from vrbo called me and it was a scam after telling them multiple time no it was someone from vrbo. They said, "Oh wait here are the notes."
They said the owner never responded and I had to wait to hear back from them even though she already called them to cancel. They said if I cancel I don’t get my money back but if she does that vrbo will help me find a new place and pay 50% more of what I already paid. So days goes by and I had to call several times due to lack of communication from them. Every time you call you are on hold for 30 plus minutes and then a few times get disconnected after waiting. I finally got the cancellation notice but still no refund. When I called about trying to get another place they say I don’t qualify for them helping me even though it states in policy that they will. This company is not consistent with what the reps say and everyone has a different answer. I’m still waiting for my refund and can’t book anything until I get my refund. I highly recommend not biking with this company.

If you cancel you are penalized. If the host cancels, even hours before your reservation, they have no penalties. You can only review if you actually stayed, unlike Airbnb. I reserved a stay over 2 weeks prior. 3 hours before checking time, I messaged the host to ask for instructions and he refunded my payment. No reasons or apologies.

VRBO posts properties that violate local (and state) ordinances/laws. I have made over a dozen calls to get my money back, and I’m told “it’s up to the property owner” even though it should never have been listed. I'm never using this platform again, as the customer service agents can’t do much except scripted responses (and supervisors are never available).

VRBO property #1810436, reservation ID#**. When you go to that property number on the VRBO site, it states it's $175 per night, we were charged an extra $367 on top of our our $656.83 for four nights (which is a 55.9% fee!!) There was nothing and NO MENTION of these fees in the booking section and on top of that the owner gets charged 10% also. DO NOT USE VRBO EVER!! The property's description of its location was way off, no mention of a narrow, steep 9 mile dirt road to the location, much less no mention of services being as far away as one hour's drive (on that "road"). Owners need to supply GPS coordinates because the description of their location is not accurate at all and they know it, yet haven't fixed it as of this review.

I called customer service and I’ve been waiting 42 minutes now. Someone picked up and is not talking. I’m just hearing a television on the back and that person behind the phone making noise and doing weird sounds. This is something disrespectful. **!! Not services at all. Twice we received cancellation notifications. Doesn't matter that two months prior they billed my credit card the full amount of the rental, then cancelled it two weeks before the start date. Rescheduled second date and two weeks prior received another cancellation. Same basic text with different dates and locations. "We are reaching out in reference to the reservation booked in Wyndham SeaWatch Plantation, on July 14th for 4 nights. We are sorry to inform you that we are a management company and our owner client has been non-responsive. Owners, pass away or sell their units sometimes without informing us. A refund will be processed for 100% of your cost. Please be aware that your credit card company may take 3-5 business days before the credit hits your account."
So, do they book rooms, condos or BNBs without approval of the owners? Don't they confirm the reservation with the owner when it is made to check availability? They take our money and draw interest on it for months. Easy way to make money with no investment. We will never use them again. If I could, I would give them a "0"!

I spoke too soon and will happily admit when I'm wrong on a company. After further review they have decided to return the initial processing fee. Honestly really happy and surprised they decided to refund even though their initial agreement did state that they had no obligation to do so. Thank you VRBO. Appreciate the professionalism.

I booked this reservation 5 days ago, it is still 3 1/2 months out and tried to cancel due to unexpected events and VRBO will not refund the absurd 400$ service fee that they charged me for legitimately doing nothing. THESE PEOPLE ARE CROOKS. Do yourself a favor and go straight to the source and cut out the middlemen. Then you won't have to donate hundreds of hard earned dollars on ethically bankrupt lousy human beings.

Just a few issues to note: You misrepresented the Master bedroom as was described as a King sized bed. It definitely was not - may have just been a full sized bed. We would not have made this resv. if we had known due to a handicap situation. The Garage floor was full of dirt residue up to an 1/8th of an inch. This should have been blown out prior to our arriving. Finally, the outdoor grill was soo disgustingly caked w/ grease - especially the exterior we did not want to touch.

Our beach house was riddled with "water bugs" aka roaches, which should have warranted some sort of refund for false advertising as an exceptionally "clean" establishment...but the real kicker was when Netflix moved in next door (a couple of feet from the house and our bedroom). They set up for days and shot overnight- group SCREAMING ensued as related to the scenes to the extent that we had to scream back out the window for them to stop so our baby could sleep.
We thought we'd get some sort of refund for sure since Netflix obviously told everyone and got a city permit...NOPE. Nothing from the homeowners and VRBO "customer service" was COMPLETE TRASH. All they did was transfer me to the owner, and when I called back with my credit card company, we were both on hold for almost an hour. No one from VRBO picked up. No reimbursement of any kind was offered and my case was dismissed.
I planned this vacation MONTHS in advance with hopes of a peaceful, ISOLATED respite with my family (husband, mother in her 70s, and 1-year-old daughter). We were all extremely disappointed. I tried my best to have this all not ruin our Mother's Day vacation, but everyone I tell this story to is in total disbelief. I'm sticking with AirBNB or an actual hotel (worth the peace of mind, especially in Covid times).

If I could give 0 stars I would. Our reservation was NOT available when we arrived. Only after we tried to access the rental, spoke to the owner, and messaged the property owner was our reservation been cancelled. We were left without a place to stay, and money has not been refunded. I'm reviewing this here after numerous attempts through the phone and the app. My friends and I booked a VRBO reservation, address ** (property ID **).
The reservation was made by my friend on April 20, 2021 (reservation ID **) When we arrived on June 17th we were informed that the location was no longer being used as a VRBO location and, according to the building owner, he has not had the location as an available VRBO rental. Between booking (April 20) and arriving at the rental (June 17 at approximately 10 pm) we received no notification of cancellation.
The night of June 17 we were left without a place to stay and had to settle for a hotel, not as conveniently located, and not as comfortable as a house. When we look at Kristin's account the booking was cancelled on June 17, 2021 at 10:50 pm. This was AFTER we arrived, AFTER we reached out to Regina (the property manager) and AFTER we talked to a man at the property claiming to be the property owner.
We emailed VRBO that very night. No response. We tried calling and contacting VRBO through the app on June 20th. My friend was able to talk to someone who said that the host was paid and they would be contacting the host for a resolution. They said she should get a refund within 5 business days. That would have been Friday, June 25, 2021. We are out the price we paid for the VRBO($1,159.85). We are out the price for a hotel. We are out the added expenses for more gas, eating out more, etc. To say we are frustrated is an understatement.

I made a booking of a villa in Palm Desert through Hotels.com and discover, AFTER paying the nonrefundable booking, that this was not a Marriott booking but through VRBO and a property management company. This was NOT disclosed on Hotels.com, and when we had problems with the hotel room, there was no place to get remedy as Marriott referred us to Hotels.com, who referred us to VRBO which was closed on a Sunday!
Misleading ad stated a "one bedroom" villa with kitchen. It was a hotel guest room with bar and fridge, and not even a full-size sofa sleeper. We were unable to upgrade without paying Marriott for an entirely new booking. The sofa bed mattress was wet, and when you open sofa bed it completely obstructed the sliding door to balcony. There was a garbage dumpster outside unit, and 2 porta potties. This is a MARRIOTT PROPERTY. I was pretty shocked. VRBO did not take care of us, they don't seem to care. I just booked my first rental on the VRBO website for 2 nights (a Wednesday & Thursday) in Marco Island Florida. We did book a small home with a pool (off season - September) and felt like we were getting an amazing deal at $225 a night. We have a shelling trip planned to Kice Island in the 10,000 Islands. Well - I'm new to VRBO and thought that it would be more cost effective for 3 adults than 2 hotel rooms. Well I was WRONG! Buyer beware all all the FEES that were tacked on to our rental. The $225 per night or $450 had a $160 cleaning fee, a $77 service fee, and a $73 lodging tax. Total - $760 for 2 nights; we could have gotten a cheaper hotel room that would sleep 3 adults.
Buyer beware of all of the additional crazy charges when booking on VBRO - you would probably be better off just booking a hotel for a lot less money. This in no way reflects the "hosts" or those renting their homes on VBRO; they just need to make everyone aware while reading about the place that there will be an additional $100 of dollars in charges tacked on at the end.

WARNING - MISLEADING & Information Withheld.
1. Owners selling property. The owners did not disclose all of the facts or warnings in the rental description. First, they live on the property and are selling. Hence, potential buyers lurking around and not all windows have coverings for privacy or shading. Josie called, interrupting us during our attempt to relax in the middle of the day, to tell us people were coming to look at the house and she would like to show them the rental. This is highly unethical and goes against VRBO guarantee policy.
2. Toxic and deadly lake. The lakefront guesthouse sits looking at a lake that is highly toxic in most areas due to algae blooming that has resulted in deaths. Dead fish floating and washed up on the banks everywhere that attract ugly vultures and tons of flies. We were not made aware or warned so we swam, kayaked to other parts, and our furbabies drank the water and are now sick. We called the CA Dept. of fish & game and we were told it wasn't a good idea to fish or swim in most areas of Clearlake. The water is murky in every area with overgrown algae and in many areas highly lethal. This was not disclosed in the description or by the owner.
In a recent article we found, it is explained: "A sample taken about 100 feet from a drinking water intake showed more than 17,000 micrograms per liter of microcystins, a liver toxin produced by the microcystins species of cyanobacteria. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency health guideline for microcystins in waters where people swim and boat is 8 micrograms per liter. California suggests posting warnings at beaches when levels reach 0.8 micrograms per liter." (**)
3. There is no A/C. It was 111° and the swamp cooler did not work at those extreme temperatures to cool the house down. There are ceiling fans, but no other cooling fans available. We were concerned about heat exhaustion and being uncomfortable before our arrival and I messaged the owner, which replied with her reassuring us it was cooler near the lake and under trees. Not at all. It was incredibly unbearable and if we can't swim in the lake there was no point to vacation there.
4. Peace and serenity did not exist. With the extreme heat, mass amounts of flies, mosquitoes, and other unidentifiable flying pests we were extremely uncomfortable. The porch, chairs, grill, and outside wasn't clean. The cobwebs and spiders made sitting on the deck with family undesirable. The house inside seemed clean but the pictures on the site are outdated and things were not the same. Likewise, the noise carries far in and out of the house. They are working on their property so they had a tractor going for hours so forget naps or quite, you won't get much. They have a bunch of chihuahuas that come over and bark annoyingly. Our dogs were unsettled due to all of the noise and people being shown the property.
The pebbles, rocks, and broken glass from the rental to the water were difficult and dangerous for the pups and family to walk on so bring comfortable closed-toed shoes. Also, keep in mind the roosters will wake you at dawn and keep going all morning. We are early rising homesteaders who have chickens and didn't mind this. But, if you like to sleep in on vacation, bring earplugs.
5. Eating out is limited. We brought our own food to cook, thankfully. But, my husband wanted pizza for his birthday. It was supposed to be the best in the area (DJs) but it wasn't flavorful or fresh, and the crust was hard and dry. It's a small town so you can imagine the quality and quantity being limited. Not to mention, you have to drive 30 minutes to any nearby commercial destinations in the bordering towns, which sadly look rundown and deserted.
My husband's birthday vacation, the first getaway for our family since before COVID, was a disaster. We decided to leave three days early when the homeowner was showing the property and waiting for us to vacate. This was our first VRBO, and I am not sure we will do it again after this extremely upsetting experience.

Hi, I stayed at https://www.vrbo.com/4211250ha?. Spent almost 5k on the visit, over $400 on VRBO fees. We chose this property because we have pets, and wanted them to enjoy the yard. Lots of places for them to explore. First day of arrival a water pipe broke for the irrigation system that waters several trees and plants in the backyard. No problem, things happen, I understand that. Sheri, the owner, sent over her husband and a specialist to check things out in the backyard without letting us know in advance and were there for several hours. We were annoyed because we had to adjust our plans and couldn't let the pets out because of this. Again, without mentioning anything to us, Sheri planned to have a crew come over to fix the irrigation system which means we have to listen to a crew fixing things all day, scaring the pets. This is a problem because my girlfriend and I work remotely and would be home during the weekdays until later.
We let the pets out during this time. We had to reach out TO HER to ask what was going on and ask her if she expects us to adjust our plans around this construction. I could be wrong, but the tone I got from her on the phone was that she was extremely annoyed that we might have a problem with construction going on in the backyard for maybe a week or more, her words, I am not exaggerating the timeline. We paid almost 5k for 3 weeks stay. I tried to cooperate with her telling her our schedules during the week and maybe the construction could go on when we were out of the house or when would work for us and she promptly said no, she will tell the crew to not come over and she will wait until we are gone to do the work.
A few days later, the water source that connects from the wall to the back of the toilet started leaking. Unrelated issue to the irrigation, the nut that makes the seal was extremely old and needed replacing. Water was all over the backroom floor when we discovered it after we got done with our work shift. WE cleaned it up because we didn't want any water damage to occur, turned off the water to that toilet with the on/off lever on the wall, the leaking stopped and we called Sheri to report the issue. She didn't answer and we had plans to go hiking that day. We waited around for 45 minutes or so for her to get back to us, cutting into our hiking plans, no response so we left on our hike. She called back when we got to the trailhead and was just about to start the hike. Told her the problem and she wanted to send her husband to look at the toilet while we were gone.
One of our pets is extremely afraid of unfamiliar people and is overweight and we worry about her getting too stressed out and having a heart problem so we don't like people coming into the rental when we are not there. It is just a reality we live with. Sheri was not understanding of that and was annoyed again that she couldn't just send someone in there. We told her we would be home the next morning because after the hike it would be 9 p.m. and Sheri had work the next day and that was too late FOR HER and HER HUSBAND. The following day was Saturday and we obviously had plans starting right away in the morning. Sheri said she could send her stepson over at 10 a.m. because he had some things going on before that, yeah, so did we. We were on vacation and now we have to wait around on a Saturday.
We did, the stepson came over, he was a nice guy, friendly and helpful. He said he could run into town and get the part to fix the issue but and the whole thing could be done within an hour. It wasn't he was gone for an hour and finally it was around 11:15 a.m. when he returned and then he could fix the toilet. Again, we had plans, starting at 9:00 a.m. that we had been putting on hold for this, so we really didn't want to wait around any longer. We suggested a later time in the day he could come but he had plans later, which he told us was a FAMILY DINNER. So basically what this all boiled down to was that Sheri and her family wanted us to adjust OUR vacation plans to make her life as convenient as possible and was UPSET WITH US for setting basic boundaries with her.
We had been on a road trip for 4 months and EVERY OTHER renter gave us 5 stars as guests because we would clean and trim bushes and help clean up a water leak (a different place), but Sheri gave us 3 stars. We cleaned, and were out on time but we suspect Sheri wanted to take her frustration out on us because we set boundaries with her. Unbelievable. We gave her 5 stars before she left us a review because her home was one of the few nice ones in the area that accept pets and if all of the issues didn't happen, the stay was very pleasant.
Why I am leaving a bad review for Vrbo is because they give the host the ability to respond to reviews and comments but they do not do this for the guest. Once the host gives you a bad star rating, whether it is fair or not, you do not have the ability to do anything. You are just stuck with that blemish forever on your Vrbo profile. After seeing the 3 star review, we spent I don't even know how many hours on the phone with Vrbo, over 4 hours, (multiple calls and wait times) without getting any help. They offer that we could reduce the star rating for the review we gave her, but the nice things we said about the place could not be changed according to their policy, so if someone saw our review they would see the bad star rating but a bunch of positive things in the explanation making the review completely meaningless.
The customer service rep who kept quoting lines from their policies to me also told me that the host does not have the ability to respond to renter's reviews and comments. They do obviously because all you have to do is go to the URL I posted at the top and scroll down to see the comments section. We wanted to change our review because of the unfair rating Sheri gave us. We also reached out to Sheri prior to calling customer service but she would not respond to us. Nothing nasty, just a short message to her asking her if she could let us know what was wrong with the experience with us. Anyways, the Vrbo customer service rep would not help us and we asked to talk to a manager. The rep said ok and the manager would call within 48 hours. No one called.
It has been a nightmare. Vrbo has everything in place so the host is protected and has a chance to respond to review but the guest does not. The PAYING guest. We spent almost 2k on Vrbo FEES alone on our road trip and this is how we get treated. Absolute crap. AirBnB has your back as the guest. Not Vrbo. Use them instead.

This house was awesome to stay in however the pictures are not how the house really looks, many things were totally different. The description provided had lots of items that were not there or part of the amenities. The housekeeping team needs to be more detailed because the pool house, under furniture and the basement has visible items that were missed. (We found a previous guest shoes.) The main kitchen sink and dishwasher would not drain and the bathroom shower from the top floor leaked into the bathroom on the lower level. This owner needs to do better if he wants to stay in this business.

They said they were the provider of but they actually are NOT (CSA is the company that charged the card that I provided VRBO (never provided to CSA)). Has still NOT been refunded and you cannot cancel via a website or via email. You can only cancel over the phone and when you call it says, "Due to high call volume we cannot take your call at this time. Please try again later." I tried at 7am in the morning, 1pm in the afternoon, and again at 4:45pm and it is the same message EVERY TIME. I will be able to get my refund according to the credit card company. After receiving the VRBO check-in information we found this property went against VRBO policy (https://help.vrbo.com/articles/What-is-HomeAway-s-policy-on-surveillance-devices-at-a-property). They cancelled our reservation based on this and gave the owner 24 hrs to return money, which was not honored, but they also allowed this same property to go back up for rental hours later (property #2203985) which means he was able to double rent those dates and we were out of $900. We spent 3 days on the phone trying to resolves this without any success in getting our money returned.
During this process VRBO for two days said someone would call us or send us new rental information to replace those dates and each day we never received any emails, phone calls or refund. I seriously am without understanding on how business that steal people's money are able to do so for so long and nothing ever happens to them. Consumers are completely helpless against these companies and they are able to continue to profit. We vent on these sites, leave reviews and what is ever done. There are lawsuits against VRBO and plenty of reviews left on VRBO site about their non-existent refund policy which shows nothing is ever done. In mid March 2020 COVID shut everything down and the wedding was cancelled. I cancelled the reservation because the government said that we COULD NOT GO. The greedy folks at VRBO kept my money anyway even though the property owner said that he gave permission for a full refund. If the government put us in shutdown, how is it legal for VRBO to keep my money? The full $1041.96 that VRBO has kept for ~1.5 years is what I want back. Desired Settlement: Refund. If they think we are going to let them get away with keeping our 1,600.00 they are wrong. We will find a way but it shouldn’t be like this. In a situation like this, the company should take care of it and refund our money. We shouldn’t have to waste our time fighting for it. When I realized this error, I immediately cancelled the reservation and sent a message to the host explaining what happened. The host responded saying there was no problem. I waited a week and the money I was charged for the stay had not yet been returned to my cc so I contacted the host again. He said he had notified VRBO of the cancellation. After a few more days, I again contacted the host who assured me this was cancelled at his end.
I then, contacted VRBO by phone who said they were still waiting for the Host to cancel the reservation, but they would send another message to the host and they assured me I would be receiving a refund within 3-5 business days. Another week went by and I still did not receive my refund so I contacted VRBO again who told me the host had still not approve my cancellation so I contacted the host once again for host informed me if he cancelled at his end, it would have a negative effect on his rating. This company has no accountability and no customer service policies which would allow their representatives to make amends with clients. The sheer enormity of their monopoly allows them, for now, to charge for what is effectively no service except the accessibility of the properties to view and book. Beyond that, any expectation that booking through them provides you any level of guarantee or insurance for the rental (which is the purpose of not booking directly with a property owner) is false. They are dismissive and feel untouchable in their field.
One customer service representative stated that in 10 years he had never been authorized to compensate anyone for their owner-cancelled booking and the time spent by the renter in securing an alternate property. It should be "zero" stars. Vrbo is horrible my travelers. Please don't use this company to book any rentals and stay away from them. If you get canceled by the host, vrbo will do nothing to help: actually, this is what they will do for you: 1) make you wait for a customer service representative (up to an hour), 2) they'll act like they're helping you, 3) then transfer you to a Travel Agent and your call will drop...If it didn't drop for the 10th time already.
Vrbo is very talented and skilled in dropping their customers' calls. Be warned. I asked for help because our rental was cancelled 30 days or less and the first thing Vrbo did was: send us a list of accommodations that were 3k+ higher than what we paid for and hung up. When I asked for help, my calls started to get drop. My calls dropped at the start, in the middle, at varies stages with no warning and no one called back even though they took down my number each time incase the call dropped. It's very interesting business. The 8th or 9th time I've called here and my call was dropped again after my call went straight to a Travel agent, and she promised to get back to me, then it sounded like she unmuted herself and the call dropped again. Surprise.
Vrbo customer service reps, please don't comment on here about how I should bring my concerns or talk to someone from the agency...It's bull! They are not interested in helping or following through with their own policy regarding cancellation. Yes, they are not responsible for the cancellation by the owner, but their policy states (in my situation) that because it was done in less than 30 days that they would provide assistance and the only thing they have really done is waste my time on the calls, with calling, calls dropping (record for me) and repeating my situation several times even though they have a reference number for my case to review. It's amazing...Really to have your calls drop this many times and have no one return your call.
Update: after another long hour on the phone, I was told that due to their own policy, that the only way they can help pay or cover for any part of the rental that is higher than what we paid for is if "we rented the rental several months in advance" to qualify. When I asked how many months, rep told me her supervisor told her "it was a couple or something like that because she's not sure." We rented the rental about 1.5 months in advance and paid in full just to give you an idea. She wasn't able to provide any documents stating that specific requirement. So their policy means nothing. Please save yourself a headache and STAY AWAY FROM VRBO. (Just a side note, the customer service rep I spoke to sounded the same, but interestingly enough, had a different name each time at least in 3 calls...It could just be a coincidence.)

My first time using VRBO we were seeking a home in Arizona with a heated pool. We found a home in Lake Havasu and rented it for a few days (VRBO property id 2241051). We had multiple issues but the largest by far were that the heater for the pool was not functioning. Worse was the time we had to spend dealing with issue trying to get it resolved (including three visits by the owners pool company) before we were scheduled to leave. To his credit the owner did give us a partial refund. When solicited by VRBO, I submitted a review which I believed to be both balanced and constructive. When I observed that this review was not posted on the VRBO web site I tried to call them multiple times. After long waits with music the call disconnects!!!!

PROPERTY ADDRESS: 2739 3 PEAKS LANE JULIEN, CA. This is the worst experience we ever had with VRBO. The description of the property amounts to fraud and deception. Here's a list of the problems:
No soap in the showers.
No paper towels or other towels in the kitchen.
Coffee maker was busted.
Bed linens were old and poorly laundered.
Bed liner was a filthy piece of plastic and cotton - never washed.
Towels were old and poorly laundered.
No hot water - the son made some adjustment and then the hot water turned on.
The general condition of the property was very bad. Lawn and garden haven't been attended to for years - one of the adults got poison oak just walking on the rock path.
One of the toilets failed completely and was unusable.
Ceiling fans had an inch of dirt covering them which meant they were unusable.
The deck had a broken fence which would have been dangerous for a child.
An upstairs door led to a shaft area which would have been extremely dangerous for anyone particularly a child who stepped inside.
The curtains were all torn and were hanging by staples.
Pictures of the above problems were taken and will be sent directly to VRBO management.
These are irresponsible property owners. The property should be removed immediately from VRBO as it poses a health hazard as well as a very uncomfortable and miserable environment. After calling VRBO and filing a complaint, they immediately took this rental information off of my profile at their website, but left the property owner's listing up. If the review isn't posted on VRBO within 2 weeks, I intend to file a small claims lawsuit against VRBO and the property owner. Never use this website again!
