When I first joined Angies List I was remodeling my house and was very excited about the opportunity to find recommended contractors. But the only good reviews I ever was able to post were for people whom I had found BEFORE I joined Angies List. All the others -- two handymen, computer repairmen, electricians, drywall repairmen, HVAC companies, landscapers, etc -- did very poor work and, in some cases, had to be asked to leave before even completing the jobs for which they were hired.
I also hate the way that Angies List pushes automatic renewal on its homeowners. It's impossible to change that online -- you have to contact Angies List and, even then, it's very difficult. If Angies List is so good, why is it so hard to cancel an account or to cease the automatic membership renewal? My membership fees were outrageous some years -- as high as $50. Now it's only $9.99 but even that amount is too much for what I'm getting. I haven't used it in a long time and tried to find a plumber yesterday. The search function has changed drastically. I used to be able to locate contractors according to how close they were to my house, but apparently I can't do that anymore. There's no telling how the contractors are listed but I've read that they can pay to be shown at the top of a list. I don't need or want that kind of service.

Not a very honest company and very money hungry. When I discovered that companies that paid the most get at the top of their list. I felt that they were being dishonest because they are also charging us the consumer for the site. It not solely based on the best companies but based on money they can put down. So you potentially hire someone so so based on how much they paid. I have quit my subscription and trust the Google review that seem to more honest and not how much some company pays.

For a company that claims to help consumers, we need to watch out for Angie's List. Forced sort order to display ads at top of results is reprehensible. And they make it VERY difficult to cancel or change auto pay on account. I give Angie's List a grade of "F."

People, please be aware AngiesList.com DOES NOT screen people. People who are thinking about hiring constructor, roofer, plumber, electrician, etc, by looking at Angie's List MUST check criminal record before hiring to avoid nightmare. I found name of constructor who has criminal record and known to take pay before he finish job and stop coming. When I checked constructor I hired on Angie's List, Angie's List is giving him top rating. Why Angie's List make people to take chance of hiring criminals and have nightmare?
Be careful people. Do not trust Angie's list. PLEASE DO CRIMINAL CHECK on people you want to hire and make sure name of people are spelled correctly because criminals do not want people to know their real name and sometimes intentionally spell their name incorrectly. Angie's List does not care. I had no idea Angie's List is same as BBB and people who pay get top rating. Never mind criminal record and suffering of victims right?

To begin: I have tried repeatedly to contact AL via telephone at a myriad of numbers listed on their website so I may cancel my account. ALL numbers are answered with a recorded message that the offices are closed for a "company function" to "celebrate the Memorial Day Weekend" and they will re-open on Tuesday. HELLO! It is March! Also, I just discovered that VENDORS PAY to BE ON THE TOP OF THE LIST. Meaning, the list of vendors is NOT ranked by reviews, but rather, how much is paid to Angie's List. Total ripoff.

I joined Angie's List a year ago (3/6/2015), partly to help evaluate moving companies. I put a note in my calendar to contact them in time to cancel the renewal. I attempted to do this online, but could not. I emailed them on 3/1/2016. They responded that I did not have a live account. I reconfirmed on 3/2/2016, doubting that this was the case and giving them more information. Again, they said I had no account. Again on 3/2, I contacted them. I had just received their printed magazine. I asked how I could receive this if I weren't a paying member. I provided all the information on the label. On 3/9 I received the following: Your account expired on 3/6/16 and renewal attempts will be made. Once again I told them that I wanted the account canceled and no charges to be made. I doubt they will cancel and may have to notify my card company of their fraud.

I own a company and signed up on Angie's List. I had a A+ with the BBB for over 20 years. I have a C rating on Angie's. Why? Because a woman called my office for a quote. I answered her back with an estimate. Told her I will wait for a reply. She never replied and wrote a bad rating on my business. Without even letting me give my side of the story. She said I didn't show up for the appt. I never made an appt with her. She requested a service that I didn't need to have an appt. I know my business gets messed up with a big brand business. Also used to get bad replies to the BBB for a business with my name in Richmond. But Angie's List didn't even send me her complaint. I got one review and it's a bad one of a customer I never had an agreement with. They won't answer my emails or take her complaint off. Go with your local BBB. They are out there for consumer and business owner alike.

I subscribed to Angie's List. I found the services of highly-rated contractors (rated by Angie's List) did not match the very poor performance. I tried to cancel the subscription as the service was useless to me. It was virtually impossible. I was on hold FORTY MINUTES. I spoke to a rude operator who said there was no other way. I could NOT cancel online. Then she told me they were having "technical difficulties". Then she said the slowdown was "lunch". I demanded a supervisor. She put me on 30 minutes of hold. My subscription was suspended because Angie's List thought I was abroad. I had no access for 3 days. When you pay for a service, contact me immediately. Don't provide a message that says "your account doesn't exist" for 3 days. I was trying to do a major renovation project but if you can't do searches for 3 days, what's the point? I will not be renewing and I will never give my feedback on service providers. Why help them when they shut you down at will?

I signed up for AngiesList in 2015. After a month, I realized I didn't want the service and I didn't agree with their political stance. I decided to cancel my subscription. William ** from AngiesList sent a confirmation email saying that it was canceled and wasn't going to be renewed in April 2015. I was balancing my account and found a charge from AngiesList for $6.99 on 2/25/16. I called to ask for a refund and they couldn't find my account with my email. When I brought up the email cancellation from last year, I was asked for my name and state; somehow they were able to find it. The account is canceled hopefully and a refund is coming. I hope that no one else encounters the problem of a canceled account renewing. Thanks.

I joined Angie's List when first moving to Florida. The landscaper I hired through them was under the influence of something and all the plants he installed in a row were crooked and diseased. I was afraid of him because he was obviously drunk or high when he did the work so did not report him to Angie's List. Then I hired an HVAC company through Angie's List to do my regular maintenance. After being sold on some questionable "building code" upgrades, I checked their Better Business Rating and found the company that had an A+ rating with Angie's List had an F rating with BBB. "Review Date: January 13, 2016, Member: Stephen **, Category: Remodeling - Kitchen & Bathroom, Services Performed: Yes, (More Weight is given to a review where work has been completed.) Work Completed Date: September 12, 2015, Hire Again: No, Approximate Cost: $8,500.00, Description of Work: Poor workmanship on install. High price., Share on Band of Neighbors: No." We contacted our salesperson because we did not recognize the reviewing customer's name. After 10 days of Angie's List "attempting" to contact the customer, this was the response we received from our sales rep...
"It sounds like you are pretty frustrated that the Angie’s List review from Stephen ** will remain on your profile page moving forward. I know that you work very hard to maintain a flawless reputation so even a B grade is probably not up to your standards. If it is any consolation, without the advertising, your profile will probably be buried on the 5th or 6th page. It is unlikely that many of our members will come across this review, let alone the Best Buy Walk-In Bath Tubs profile now that you no longer have first-page placement on Angieslist.com. Regardless, Angie’s List is not in a position to take sides or make a judgment as to whether a review is right or wrong. Our goal is to provide a forum for consumers to share information with one another while staying neutral. Our members own their reports and are responsible for the contents of the reviews, just as companies are responsible for their responses.
We don’t mean to be unhelpful. In fact, we will do everything we can to help you manage your reputation on the list. However, because we are foremost a consumer-oriented service, we must first uphold our member’s ability to express their opinion. In large part, I believe that consumers trust us because we are unwilling to unilaterally change or remove reviews. Because consumers trust us, we in turn are able to provide an advertising product that is worthwhile for the companies on our list. Our policies are not intended to spite you, only to preserve this delicate ecosystem. I would encourage you to not get bogged down in the individual comments our members submit.
Our members make hiring decisions based upon trends within reviews. So long as your ratings remain as strong as they are now, and recurring themes do not emerge in your negative feedback, you should be able to maintain a positive presence on our list." I am absolutely blown away by Angie's List. As long as you pay to advertise, your reviews will not be affected. I feel certain this "poor customer review" was placed by Angie's List. The reason I believe someone at Angie's List wrote this is because of the email.

I have many very satisfied customers who recommend my work on high-end additions and remodels. Over past 12 years I have a repeat clientele... so I got repeated solicitations from Angie's List. I finally gave in. I sent in many of my top rates from customers... had to send Angie's list their reviews to go up in her ratings. Come to find out she doesn't really rate their reviews until they pay for a membership. My reviews lay buried until they pressured my customers to join. What an embarrassment. I literally set up my faithful customers to be pressured to join her list! Doesn't matter what they said. It wouldn't make top of list until they joined. What a scam. If she was looking for top contractors w/ unbiased reviews he didn't take those views until they registered as paying customers!!!

A year later I received a bill from a collection agency. Angie's list claims it's a cancelation fee ($1400 and they would agree to accept $500) in the letter from the collection agency. It sounded as though I negotiated with them when I was never even contacted or billed. As a contractor I pride myself with offering personal service and integrity. I was greeted by customer service agent and whom I told what I wanted to do. She asked me why, I told her I did not need the service anymore. She responding saying there were movie tickets and restaurant discounts that I could use, and that she would offer me a 20% discount to stay. So far standard procedure if you and to cancel membership. I checked out what was available and saw it would not be worth it to me, so contacted an agent again and told her what I wanted. She said she'd be glad to set a reminder to come up in December of 2016 so I could cancel it then. I said "no I wanted to cancel it now," she said "ok, it is cancelled and you can can use the account until 2016."
I told her it was not listening, that I wanted to cancel the membership right now not next year. She responded saying "it is cancelled." I said "I am getting a credit correct." She said "no, there is a difference between cancelling and getting a credit. Are you requesting a credit?" I said "yes", and she responded that I would get a credit in shortly. I have been a highly rated and frequently reviewed contractor on Angie's List since 2008. In 2015 I have 100 reviews, an "A" rating and have won their "super service award" every year except one since 2008. I am a licensed painting contractor but my listing was as a home repair company and in late 2015 was contacted by Angie's List and told that because I was performing work outside my license trade that they were revoking all my super service awards, deleting my company from category searches and that the only way customers could find me was by a company name search. Well, they followed through on their threats but in addition to that they deleted all my reviews as a legitimate painting contractor and my company name no longer shows up in a company name search. In other words they removed all trace of my company from Angie's List after an eight year relationship because of a trade licensing violation.
They also removed all my reviews as a legitimate and fully licensed painting contractor which were not in any violation of trade licensing agreements. A number of my faithful customers wrote to Angie's List complaining that no trace of my company could be found on their list. They responded to each customer of mine with a different explanation, none of which were true and told them that I could still be found under company name search which was also not true. After numerous and repeated phone calls to Angie's List Trade Licensing Department I could not get one single straight answer as to why their actions were so punitive in nature and why they were lying to my customers about my status on their list.
My suspicion is that because I had never purchased any advertising packages from Angie's List, because I had all the work I could handle that the word came down from above that my company was to be blacklisted and removed from the list no matter what. My next phone call will be to the Indiana Department of Consumer Affairs and the District Attorney's Office in Indianapolis, Indiana. This company practices fraudulent business, lies to its members and lies to its contractors. You are strongly cautioned to avoid Angie's List as they no longer seem to be a company with any integrity whatsoever.

I decided to do this reluctantly but knew that it works hand in hand with Big Deals and Storefront deals from how they explained it to me. I spend $130 a month with them on Marketing and have had 0 calls in the last 5 months from this. I track all calls through Salesforce so we know where our calls come from or inquires.
I have sold a lot of Big Deals and Storefronts through them and they were suppose to direct deposit the funds into my business checking account. I never was paid, they said they paid a part of the money into a Chase account come to realize that the account they deposited the funds into was not linked to my business but a different company's account from what they admitted to me. They said they can not retract that money and pay me since I should have told them the right account information. To top things off, since the 3rd deposit they made into that companies account was rejected they issued a check out to our company but to a different address not associated with our company. They owe us over $3,000 and promised to have us paid for by Friday 12/4/15 and we are still waiting for our money.
We have fulfilled 100% of our agreement with the Big Deals, and Storefronts with them and our client's that purchased through them and we are getting shafted. Not a good feeling! I as the owner have reached out many times to get this resolved and have been ignored, and find out that their policy is to return calls within 24 hours none of my calls have been returned. Second day, asked him for insurance and permit, got nasty and said I should have asked the first day. He left job, told his two workers to stop without having paperwork. Also going, he cashed the check while I was at the rental company and he got 4000 and never came back. Had to find another to finish busting and removing the approach. Cost another 6000 for that.
This contractor has been terminated with HomeAdvisor and as a courtesy, they refunded 1500. The contractor is a known ** and has judgments against him. I am a new business owner and after watching the "great" ads on television, decided I would create a free account on their site. I was soon contacted by a sales rep about advertising and getting more business. I was persuaded that having an advertising campaign on their site would "cause my phones to blow up." Well needless to say, I am in a contract that has yet to produce any revenue for my company. I was also told by sales, that if I posted coupons it would drive traffic my way. I again have only made Angie's List money and NONE for my company. If I knew what I know now, I would have spent my advertising dollars elsewhere.

I am a building contractor & was an AngiesList customer. What I mean by customer is I paid them for advertising which they tell the public is free. I paid over $4000 this last year because they promised me more leads for business. 4 times than previous years. I was with them for 4 years. I did not receive 4 times the business. Actually 40 times less than the previous. And there were reviews posted to my account that are from customers we never even dealt with. This company is not a good source of advertising in the construction or real estate services. What an expensive lesson on my part. Would not recommend to any other business. And the 20 leads that did come in were for handyman services or from consumers that have no clue what it cost to do business. Total false representation!!! Buyer Beware!!!

Waited over 19 months for an invoice of an outstanding balance for a work done (backsplash in the kitchen). We are not satisfied on how the billing was handled because the charges are horribly high. The tiles we selected are way under budget because the area is less than 25 sq ft. The $499 that was advertised was up to 40 sq ft. Basically, all the materials needed for the job could have been covered with the $499. But, we were charged an arm and a leg for a very tiny job thru Angie's List. It would have been more reasonable to get someone else.

I tried to sign up for Angie's List so I could research home-security companies for an elderly family member. I'm a military service member and I'm overseas with no dwelling back in the U.S., so my mailing/billing address is an APO address (For those who don't know what "APO" means, the military delivers its mail to overseas members through its own internal system, but we are assigned a U.S. zip code because our mail is sent through the normal the U.S. Postal Service up until it transfers the mail to a military center in New York.).
Every merchant I've used so far (Amazon, Walmart, a few mom-and-pop stores) supported military APO addresses, but not Angie's List. At first, I tried to sign up online but their system declined me and gave an error that my zip code was invalid. No problem, I figured if I called Customer Service, we could figure out a way to get them to accept a Soldier's money. Nope! I gave her my 5-digit zip code and she said, "Sorry, we can't accept your billing address." She had no solutions to offer and didn't try to research a workaround... just flat out declined me.

We used Angie's List after much hesitation earlier this year (2015). We had a few clients contact us saying positive things about the program and decided to try it out. Our problem came when a review was posted by someone we had never even heard of, let alone performed any work for. This review, since we were new to Angie's List and only had 4-5 reviews, dropped us to a bad rating and caused a breach of contract, making us liable for the entire remaining bill (which they billed my CC for immediately).
We reached out to our account representative and the review was resolved in a few days, potentially costing us thousands in lost sales. He (AL account rep) responded telling me that he reached out to the reviewer and she confirmed to him that it was a case of mistaken identity between us and another company with a similar name. The review was removed and we should have been back in good standing. However, we were still billed for the balance in full & any and all advertising we had with them was removed. Our contract status is listed as "Pulled".
In any event, I called my banking center and immediately disputed the charge (which we are awaiting the outcome of). We heard nothing back until today 10/11/15, when an email informs me that a new review posted to Angie's List, THE SAME REVIEW THAT STARTED THE PROBLEM!! You can't make this stuff up! All of this heartburn caused by a false, slanderous review, written by someone who has never worked with nor contacted our company. You would think a company like Angie's List would be able to police this better. I don't know what recourse I have to save my company's online reputation, but I am seeking counsel immediately and wouldn't recommend this service to anyone.

When I was in the infant stage of being a business owner, a customer had suggested I list my company on Angie's List. Before that, I was advertising on Craigslist. After a little persuasion, I agreed to let him put a review on me and my services. This was the best decision I could've made for my company. In a period of 6 years, I have a accumulated over 200 reviews from actual customers and maintain an "A" rating.
I find that my Angie's List customers are much easier to work for. They have taken the time to research my company and compare us to other companies. They have already built a level of expectation from us based on what they have read. I have gone from a one man show to having 11 full time employees. Until this year, I never paid Angie's List a dime. I decided to give back to them and do an advertisement package with them. I would've been better off donating the money to them. We now have more business than we can keep up with. As you can tell, I am a HUGE fan of Angie's List and HIGHLY RECOMMEND them!!

After selling over 20 coupons and getting only 1 or 2 refunds they penalized me and stop running the coupons for my company for 4 months. On top of that, they were taking 20% profit for each coupon you sell, and now they want 25% if I want to run the coupons. There is no money to be made in the coupons. Angie's List is only concerned about their own business, no one else's. I was contacted by Angie's List that one of their members added a negative review. The story - we did an assessment for $350. When our schedule was too full to add their child to our schedule, I apologized and refunded their $350. This client was very upset. I read the review and saw the name of the member who submitted it. This member was NOT my client. I called Angie's List and they said it's against their policies for a member to submit a review on behalf of another person. I said I have my clients address on paperwork they submitted for the assessment that matches the address for their credit card charge.
A week later, the Angie's List representative called me back and said they were able to verify that my client is living at the address of their member. I asked them to look at the county auditor's website for the address I had for this family and they would see that this family owns the house at this address. Angie's List response was, "well we asked and they told us they live at the member's address, so that's all we can do." I could not believe their laissez-faire attitude. Then I brought up the fact that the review said the "reviewer" paid money and got no services, when in fact the service they paid for was provided (the assessment) and that was refunded. Angie's List response, "we can't do anything about the review, but you can write a response." Total BS Angie's List!

I wish I had read these ConsumerAffairs reviews before signing up, because I completely agree with how useless and downright unethical Angie's List turned out to be. I think they put a lot of effort into the illusion of being consumer oriented, but at the end of the day all Angie's List wants to do is squeeze every last penny out of both consumers and companies who receive reviews without providing any real value to either. It's a shake down rather than a service.
After the first year, I felt like Yelp had provided better information and certainly wouldn't have signed up again. Imagine my surprise when I see an automatic charge from Angie's List. I called and had one of those Kafkaesque customer service conversations with a representative who was being deliberately obtuse. She initially said it was not an option to opt out of service renewal, which seems like it can't possibly be legal--this would mean that there is literally no way to get out of paying Angie's List for life. Eventually I was able to convince the rep to say she was changing my account to not automatically renew. However, after this Comcast-level awfulness, I hardly trusted what she said, so I did manage to take off a payment method from my account and I've put a calendar alert with details to remind myself of what happened in order to dispute the charge if somehow they manage to charge me next year.
Angie's List simply relies on the fact that no one is going to make a stink for less than $5 to get away with despicable business practices. DO NOT SIGN UP. It's not worth the hassle. I don't know much about such things, but maybe this would be a possibility for a class action lawsuit? The money wouldn't be worth it for each individual user, but to save future consumers aggravation?

I have very similar experience that everyone seems to be reporting here. I didn't even know we had reviews on this site until a negative one popped up concerned a landscaping issue that we were not responsible for as a pool company. We were hired to bury a pool and per contract the homeowner would have her yard seeded within 7-10 business days. The customer left her yard unseeded from April all the way until late June with a wet Wisconsin spring then wrote this awful review on Angie's List. I got a letter from Angie's List in the mail saying we haven't done anything and we have until such date to resolve the complaint. The email some case manager sent out to tell us about the bad complaint was never even sent here so we had no knowledge of it. I did buy and have delivered to this customer topsoil even though we weren't responsible because nobody wants an unhappy customer.
Angie's List said if we resolved they remove the negative review and we would be in the clear. They began hounding and trying to sell us on advertising for a monthly member booklet. We declined after about three weeks of calls only to find the next month they published the bad review in this booklet! Not only with my company's name, but my personal name on it. I do believe Angie's List is nothing but a bully company. Good businesses will always do good business. We don't need to be bullied into buying advertising. Especially when we decide not to and they turn on you and put something out there that they agreed not to if you resolved your issue.
I called Angie's List to speak to my sales representative, Doug **, about this and he indicated that this shouldn't have happened. We couldn't have been in the booklet because only reviews on paying subscribing businesses are shown in there. He sounded all concerned and said "let me look into this and call you back." Our plumbing business ended up on Angie's List much to our dismay. We never asked to be included on their list and certainly didn't bargain for all of the annoying sales calls we received promising that they could "take care" of our reputation for us on their site for a nominal fee. That was the first fire engine red flag. The second fire engine red flag was when I actually got to meet the kind of customers you get from Angie's List. Stingy isn't the word to describe them. Crazy is more like it. We've had negative reviews put on our profile by people we didn't even work for. Angie's List can't do anything to stop these bogus reviews where their members are free to say anything that they want about our company even if it's a lie. They will; however, move those reviews to the bottom of the list for a nominal fee.
The clients that we did actually work for are many times bullies that will huff, puff, and threaten you with Angie's List reviews, take you to the BBB, or just refuse to pay up because you shouldn't expect to be paid for the work you do because they subscribe to Angie's List. Their Big Deal is an even bigger joke. You sell two hours for the price of one, split the money with Angie's List, then up-sell the customer more services. Now, I've been around a while and recognize something that's unethical when I see it. That's downright scandalous. It's lying to the customer who thinks they're getting a real steal (which they are) only to have you poking them for more cash, which always equals more negative reviews that Angie's List can do nothing about because members remain free to bad mouth you all they want without recourse.
If you really want to see an Angie's List member go off like a rocket, hand them a bill. They will break their fingers trying to get logged in to post negative reviews all over the Internet for your company. Calling Angie's List a scam is the understatement of the decade. Angie's List is out for one thing-Angie's List. After hearing their spiel, we refused to buy into their scam, which brought us more harassing calls from their salesmen and more heartburn. During the whole Angie's List experience, we did find one way that they did benefit our company. Whenever someone called and made mention of Angie's List, we knew without a doubt that that was definitely someone we didn't want on our client list. That little bit of wisdom has saved us so much heartburn. Our job is fun again. I guess every cloud does have a silver lining. They refused to refund our money.
Then today we got a letter from their resolution department. A customer who is refusing to pay us (we found out this is his scam, he hires contractors than threatens to file suits with BBB, Home Improvement commission, or Angie's List) - telling us that if we charged the customer they would post a negative review of our company in their magazine to over 55,000 customers. I was hounded for years to sign up for business (paid) advertising by their annoying salespeople. The exaggerated claims one saleswoman made to me finally convinced me to sign up. She claimed I would get a ton of work (she had mentioned how my competition had many hundreds of reviews while I had only a dozen or so due to not paying to advertise). They make you sign up for a full year probably knowing everyone would quit after their first month. Upon getting ZERO calls or "messages" in their email center for two weeks I tried to get out of the contract - of course their soulless corporate drones didn't listen to the fact I am a small business working for myself and the loss of money really hurts my family. Eventually I booked some work from Angie's list members, you need to give huge discounts for them to contact you.
I worked with some insanely stingy people, so bad I would have rather stayed home than go bust a** for like minimum wage. I signed up with their "storefront" where members pay Angie's list then Angie's list pays you. I worked with A's list to make the "buyable" offer. This became a nightmare, people would buy a storefront offer (I own a clutter removal business) and beings they purchased the offer for say, $180, for a third of a truck (already a discount), they would have way more than that and expect me to haul it away for what they paid. One guy knew he had a ton of stuff, but he had bought the offer, I got on site and said no way: Get a refund I'm not doing it for free basically. He called Angie's list and they agreed with the customer that the offer didn't state there was a limit on how much they could have. I haven't been so enraged in 5 years of business, I did the waste of time/effort job for the rat-mentality customer.
When I originally signed up the opportunistic salesperson told me that would never happen (that the fine print would state they only buy a certain amount of clutter removal). So, essentially, pay a monthly fee to be able to do jobs for ultra-stingy customers you'd rather avoid altogether. I've never felt this passionately negative about any company in 34 years. It's been about 2 months and no one has messaged me on Angie's list about doing work (you need a super deal you offer or no leads). I have been in business 5 years and have a perfect "A rating" yet no one contacts me because I don't have a super low offer to give them. I have 8 more months on the "contract" and will be writing bad honest reviews on every site I can so no other humble, good people who work hard to provide for their families aren't fleeced like me by this evil, scamming company.
Each time I try to contact Angie's list they just try to get me to offer more "bend-over and take it" style offers, it's like being in the twilight zone. After you sign up, suddenly they reveal you only show up on the front page of advertisers on some arbitrary algorithm basis. Angie's list AND customers extort you, you want a good review from customers so you have to be amazing while offering an amazing deal; to even show up to customers you need to jump through Angie's list's hoops. Do not sign up! Use Craigslist, you'll get stingy customers or leads but at least Craigslist is free.

Angie's List called me in 2013 and said they could get me more reviews if I advertised on their website. I paid them $300.00 and never saw the first ad. After checking daily for nearly a month I called and asked "Where is my ad?" I was told that I cannot see the ad unless I happen to be on their website when the ad was running but to take their word for it that it was running. I said "Well just show me a copy of the ad so I can see what it looks like." I was told "Sorry we can't do that." I don't believe for 2 seconds that the ad I paid for was ever run.
To rub salt in the wound, Angie's List rep Holly ** called me 07/23/2015 and said "We have read your complaint and would like you to try us again." I said "You re-run the ad I already paid $300.00 for back in 2013 and show me it on your site then we can talk." She said "Sure we can give you credit for your past ad. Let me look and see what we can do and I will call you back." As I figured I have heard nothing from them. I will never trust Angie's List again. Also I might add that Holly ** said that if I pay them for advertising they would put my business in front of many more paying customers. What happened to only being paid for by consumers and businesses pay nothing? All LIES. They are double dipping.

Angie's List does nothing besides put money in their pocket. I talked to homeowner that we did work for that called Angie's List before to find contractors, they told him we have a D rating and don't pay our bills. Well don't know where he got the D rating for but we paid Angie's List even though they did nothing for us. The homeowner ended up hiring us after getting on the BBB, a real business website which we have a A+ rating. Don't use Angie's List.

At a friend's recommendation (who lived in another area of the country), I joined Angie's List several years ago when I was planning some major home renovations. I was not impressed, however, by the search results for various services in my area; not only were the results for contractors close to home quite sparse, but Angie's List repeatedly offers up service providers who are over 50 miles away. Yelp, Google, and word of mouth have been much more helpful. So I cancelled my annual membership. I was shocked when it auto-renewed (for another year) and quickly cancelled it again.
Today, I noticed yet another auto-renewal for an annual membership (at twice the former cost) - and when I called to query was told that it had auto-renewed last year as well after I had signed up on a website. I don't remember doing this and don't know why I would have signed up for a "service" that I remember as lackluster at best. I would extremely leery about giving Angie's List any of my financial information; they rival Comcast for unauthorized charges!

Angie's List sales reps call 4-5 times weekly and email constantly. I told them to stop calling me, which only lasted briefly. Talking with them about their advertising services is like speaking to a cult member who's trying to lure you into their conclave. They won't give you the information you need to make accurate decisions. They answer questions with questions and shamelessly manipulate conversations in what I now assume is an attempt to just wear you down so you'll give in and give them a credit card #. DON'T DO IT!
Maybe I'm hard-nosed, but my expectations exceed what any AL sales rep has demonstrated. And I've spoken with several. My business' customer service is excellent. ALL my business comes through referral, because I treat my customer base with honesty and integrity. I give straight answers and treat people the way I expect to be treated.
I can't decide if Angie's List sales reps PURPOSELY dodge, maneuver and manipulate their way through conversations because that's how they've been trained or if I just keep getting the worst of the worst. Nevertheless, after 4-5 hours on the phone over multiple conversations, I am done with them. And I still have yet to land even a single job through Angie's List. Every contact has turned out to be a tire-kicker or bottom-scraper (low-baller). What a waste of time and energy.

Then they discounted that down to $1800.00 making me believe I was getting a amazing deal until I got into the big deal program. Matt which was my rep at the time offered me to be part of a roofing repair program that was offered to Angie's customers at $99.00. Never did they explain any details to the customers or myself. The customers were flooding in not giving any time to even adjust my schedule to properly get to these customers. Angie's took $1800.00 from me and never even got me one customer other than the Big Deal program which made me no profit but Angie's received 50% off each job we complete. An Angie's List customer wanted me to do work that has been condemned by the city. When I took the job, the Angie's List member told me that they hired another contractor to do work, then I was to follow their work with a small walkway replacement. None of the prior work was finished. When I got there, I told the Angie's List member that I couldn't do the work because it was unsafe. Angie's List stepped in, and is working outside the law. As it turns out, the member failed an inspection by the city prior to the negative review. The city listed their entire porch/deck as "dilapidated and dangerous".
The Angie's List member CANNOT have work done without a permit. I told Angie's List that I was willing to help their member but that the member needs to comply with the city requirements, or someone could die (if there is a collapse). Angie's List replied that I was not cooperating and therefore the negative review will stay. Not only that but they may put me in their "bad contractors" section of their monthly publication. By doing what Angie's List has done, they are defending a criminal. Yes, the member is a landlord, and will go to jail if they continue on their current path of non-cooperation. Not only that but, ONE OF THEIR TENANTS COULD DIE! And Angie's List supports this, by trying to force me to do something illegal. Personally, I would be subject to any liability, fines, and possibly homicide (if someone died from a deck or porch collapse).
Not only that but I come here and read this from an Angie's List employee: "Steve of Brunswick, ME on July 27, 2015. This service allows disgruntled, mentally ill former clients to rant about perceived poor services. I complained to the supervisor at Angie's List and was told there was nothing I could do." -- yeah, there is. Ask Angie's List to stop marketing "mentally ill" clients. That way they won't be "mentally ill former clients". Angie's List ONLY requires ONE person in a company to pass a criminal background check, and it doesn't have to be the owner. It can be anyone. A company can hire someone just so they can pass a background check. Angie's List is a total **, and a total scam.

As soon as our business began receiving good reviews we would get relentless calls. They were very pushy about these "Deals" in which they make money and you get good reviews; it ended horribly. As if we didn't learn our lesson then, 6 months later we got more relentless calls about being in their BROCHURE; we agreed and again it ended badly. $2,000 later, we hang up on them and refuse to take any calls or discuss ANGIE'S LIST in any way shape or form. We won't even accept any of their supposedly "free services". They make all these promises and in the end, THE ONLY ONE WHO MAKES MONEY IS ANGIE'S LIST.

In fairness, we got one good lead out of Angie's List - a contractor who did relatively decent work at relatively fair prices. But that is one out of four of the different businesses we've hired or met with from Angie's List recommendations. Of the remaining three businesses, one was an out-and-out scam artist (a local window cleaning company that charges double the going rate and uses non-English speaking teenagers as service people. Another was a major contractor who took four extra months to complete his project (virtually everything had to be done twice - first by the low-end providers he brought in, then fixed by professionals at our insistence).
And the third was a cleaning service that wanted $350 a week to clean a modest home that most local businesses charge under $100 for similar service. I have subsequently learned that the lion's share of Angie's income comes from the contractors, who pay for better listings, so everything begins to make sense. I would never consider using Angie's List again. Their track record is worse than just closing your eyes and turning to a page in the Yellow Pages. It's a rip-off.

Not only do they charge the contractor every month, they telemarket endlessly to get more money. They frequently make promises they don't keep. Another thing that you should know is that Angie's List **NOT A LICENSED CONTRACTOR ** - that means that THEY have no liability if anything goes wrong. Wherever you are, keep your money local. Her PERSONAL assets are listed at 50 million, but I'm sure it's much more. She's taken enough of your money. In NM, what they're doing is a very fine line between tax fraud and a pyramid scheme. Because they're out of Indiana, there's no regulatory body that can audit them locally. Besides, they get the majority of any purchase you'd make anyway.

Most people believe Angie's List is an unbiased consumer resource. I am contacting your station because as a small business owner, I have come to believe otherwise. For the past few years, Angie's List has been soliciting advertising from businesses with high ratings on their website. In return, they promote those businesses. Recently, Angie's List launched a service in which consumers can call and ask for referrals. The referrals given are based not on customer reviews but on advertising dollars. In addition, those businesses are placed on the front page of the website and businesses with lower ratings are granted awards over businesses with higher ratings. This is in direct conflict to what Angie's list claims to stand for.
For many years, I trusted in and relied on Angie's List for the well-being of my company. I felt it was a place for my customers to leave their honest feedback in a forum that allowed my company's reputation to speak for itself. It now is my opinion that Angie's List is defrauding consumers by showing preferential treatment to their advertisers at the detriment to non-advertising companies. Angie's List continues to promote itself as a place for consumers to obtain information based on other consumers experiences, but behind the scenes consumers are being manipulated. I have a great deal more information on this subject if someone could contact me to discuss this further. I hope you will consider researching this story, as I feel the community would benefit from honest reporting on this issue.

Charging vendors/small business like myself $$ and throwing us under the bus as I was not even listed in the top 3 or 4 with 82 straight A reviews. I can't get a straight answer out of my rep (Erica **) other than I can't cancel my contract for July 25th although it's not even July yet. I am tired of more evasive responses which I interpret as "screw you, we can load as many vendors as we want and your ranking means nothing on search, it's up to the clients to search for review count, rankings are up to us and/or are random".
I am a small single man operation, and when my business drops off, I can't afford to pay Angie's List $500+ per month only to be dropped in randomly with new vendors who should not have been able to pay for search in an area that already had three paid vendors assigned. All that is happening with home inspection is new vendors are undercutting existing vendors and when we work at or below cost, we are all losing while Angie's pockets more advertisement revenue. FYI I am also posting on social media and made a YouTube video showing search rankings and how I am even off the radar in my own home address as the origin of my search.

I own a contracting business that was on Angie's List "early on" and is a recipient of the Angie's List Super Service award for five years in a row. Early on, we began advertising on Angie's List as this is the only way to get your name to the top of AL lists. But then Angie's List started going after more and more money from contractors in order to keep a presence on Angie's List. At the same time, Angie's List wanted us to sell our services through their site, communicate with our customers through their site, and offer deep discounts for our products through our site. We received constant sales calls expecting us to all but let Angie's List run our business, and they were happy to tell us how to do that.
After having had enough of being told how to run our business, we removed our advertising from Angie's List. Of course our name (at the time we stopped advertising our listing was at the top) went pages down the list. However, the sales calls did not stop and actually increased. Finally I explained that we were not in agreement with where Angie's List is at nor where it is going. I asked to be removed from their sales call list and was told that if they did that they would remove our listing completely from Angie's List. What? I thought the consumer was responsible for putting contractors on Angie's List? I am appalled by this latest sales tactic and find it contrary to everything they promote themselves to be. This is not a consumer site; this is a site where the contractor with the biggest pockets gets to the top and the rest are pushed to the bottom of the list regardless of performance and ratings by consumers.

One quote was $3000 JUST to replace duct work in the attic, not fix the A/C! I understand that businesses can move up the ratings list if they are willing to pay, almost 70% of their business comes from advertising (while membership revenue continues to decline) and in 18 years it has never turned a profit (Forbes).
If you subscribe by the month (as I did) the renewal is automatic unless you cancel (somewhat understandable), but the ONLY way you CAN cancel is by mail, fax or calling. Again I bought a coupon for $50 from AngiesList, they send a plumbing company and took them 2 days to fix a leaky faucet. They charged me close to $400. The company never redeemed the $50 coupon and AngiesList kept the money. When I ask them to refund the $50 they told me I should get it from the plumber. I said, "Why would they refund the money if they never cashed the coupon?" They told me to keep on calling them. Amazing! I think this operation is a scam!

I tried canceling my Angie's List account using their online service but was unable to because it's rigged. So I called an Angie's List rep over a month ago to cancel my account. I explained to her that I never use it so I wanted to cancel. She then tried to get me to stay with them by reducing the monthly fee and then offered coupons. I explained again that I just don't use it and would like to cancel. She said she would cancel my account but lo and behold they still keep charging my credit card. I've reached out to American Express and asked them to credit my account and block Angie's List from charging additional charges. Hopefully this will work. I would definitely not recommend Angie's List to anyone.

I put my business of 21 yrs on Angie's List 4 years ago. They immediately bombarded me with solicitation calls and emails wanting me to advertise with them for approximately $5500 a year. All of my business comes from word-of-mouth from completely satisfied customers. The rep told me they would give the same advertising package for $2100 with many promises. I decided to advertise with them and it was a huge waste of money. After the year was over the bombardment of calls and emails continued. I asked and replied to emails to 'Please remove me from all call and email lists'. No success. I called and spoke with a supervisor today and ask for my company profile (which has nothing but A reviews) to be removed from Angie's List. He said that they would not do that.
I understand if a bad company wants to be removed and try to hide from the consumer but I have an outstanding reputation with the BBB, all municipalities that I work in, etc. I am not trying to hide from anyone. I just do not want to be associated with this company anymore. They told me that they could remove my company from the search engines and it could only be seen if someone searched for the name of my company specifically. BUT they post a notification on my company's profile explaining why the company was excluded from search results which some consumers could deem bad.
The only advice that I can give to any credible company that is thinking about joining Angie's List, DON'T DO IT. I am searching for any groups or individuals that have had the same problem so that possible legal action could take place. I don't think that Angie, founder of the company, wanted this business to end up the way that it has. I will file a complaint with the BBB as well and post my story anywhere that I can.

Angie's List lures vendors to their site promising new customers by selling a "deal" to the consumer. They have no ceiling of the total number that can be sold. I bought 2 deals through them and in both cases these were oversold. In one case I did get the services because I was an early purchaser. In the other they could not do the work for over 6 weeks! When I tried to get a refund I was presented with conditions that basically said Angie's List is not responsible if the Vendor cannot do the service timely. This is a scam of the highest order. In searching for a contractor in the Waco, TX area, Angies List gave me a few for those listed in Waco. In conducting searches through Google, I find several companies which are also on the Waco Angies List, but were not included in my search results. It took several times to adjust the filters to figure out why all companies were not showing up, and it was then that I was hit up with a charge to access those. What a crock!
Why would I pay to access these companies' information through Angies List when I can Google them (for FREE), and if nothing else, they are listed as belonging to Angies List which shows me they are accredited, recommended, etc. I wonder if these companies who are paying for advertising know their companies are not being listed unless someone pays to see their information. Hmmm... bad deal. I won't be using Angies List. BEWARE, you are not seeing all those companies when you search... unless you pay to access it. Just use Google and read the recommendations, go to the Better Business Bureau for their rating and you'll be better off, and it's FREE!!

I did not have any luck with getting someone I wanted and so pursued other avenues all of which were very helpful. I wrote Angie's list and told them I did not want to use their services and forgot about it, until my credit card was charged automatically for renewal. I wrote them again, in 2014 after I called and was told again that I had to put everything in writing.
Another year passes and lo and behold my credit card was charged again. This time I disputed this with my credit card company. I would advise anyone contemplating using this service to refrain from using them. There are other services out there, some that are even free and I have had much better luck using them. The saga continues because I still don't have an answer on the dispute. I am sure the Credit Card companies know about this company's practices. Due to the poor weather in the area which I live things have not been so free flowing. I can't get done what I have already. This meaning I never completed setting my profile or opening my account. Due to the fact of not being able to get to the work even if it comes in. The sales team at over there tries to go in and take a 2nd payment. Even though they have my deposit & I didn't start running yet. Telling me that you were set to go in the spring. So even though I have little review work on their site, no photos, links or a proper functioning page they say my advertising runs anyway.
When I call to tell them that I've been jammed and I can't move forward right now the sales rep ** basically tells me, "Too bad. Your set up with us and even though I haven't spoken to you in months, and you only have an about this time date to start, and you never set up your profile we're just gonna take your money." This woman doesn't care about my business or anyone else. She cares that the advertising auto withdraw works every month & her staff is programmed the same way.
That's why if I read consumer reports and found out that they're dirt bags and people all over on both ends contractor & customer are complaining I wouldn't have chalked up 300 to this pocket picker. The top handyman had 38 criminal convictions, amongst of which were drug convictions, failure to pay state tax convictions, protection orders issued, many of which are felonies! The second highest rated handyman had 40+ criminal convictions, for the same type of criminal offenses, some of which are felonies. Ratings mentioned how friendly and talkative they are. Elderly people are especially vulnerable to slick, fast talking criminals, and what is mistaken for friendliness, in these cases could very easily be the con man at work on vulnerable people. 2 of the other handymen listings also had lesser criminal convictions.

We agreed and they started billing us $750.00 per month. It took three months before we showed up as promised. In the following month we received just one Angie's list referral and that was from a past customer of ours. Prior to signing up we had a "A" rating on their list.

I absolutely loathe what they've become. I sympathize with the businesses being harassed. I'm not a business but a consumer tired of the way companies act these days. I signed in to cancel our account. I took the time to itemize some of the reasons why and I didn't care about getting a refund. I requested the representative to not defend the site. But he/she/or it copied a scripted response. I said, "If you won't cancel it, I'd change my password" (I didn't say to something so ludicrous I wouldn't remember it) because if either of us accidentally tried to sign in and had to reset the password, it would be enough of a reminder to not reset it and, therefore, not post a thing.
If I cannot post a negative response about a company without fear of retribution, that website becomes useless. If policies are hidden so businesses can be harassed by them, I will not deal with them. Unfortunately, American workers (I assume they do provide jobs to them) will again suffer. But if you don't trust a company and don't trust a review, the website is worthless.

Sarasota's Wentzel Heating and AC recently received the Angie's List Superior Service Award. My experience with them = they were installing insulation in a home next to mine by pumping from a truck in the street to the home. The noise and both the smell and chemical experience were horrendous, causing painful watering of the eyes and nose and irritation to the throat. I called to inquire how long this would go on and was responded to by one of their representatives - "this would go on for perhaps 14 hours" and that it was just too bad for me. I should shut my windows and shouldn't walk my dog and he was sorry I was such a poor neighbor and that he wouldn't want to live next door to me. I was truly shocked that this individual would not apologize nicely for causing me any problems and offering any relief or consolation.
As it turns out, the next day, the truck was parked up near the house instead of in the street. Their next day activities were not obtrusive at all. Now why didn't the company just do this in the first place, and why didn't the representative apologize and suggest they could at least partially remedy the problems by moving the truck? The problem could have been solved easily and nicely, and the problem eventually was. Too bad their representative was so poor at consumer relations. I was surprised to see Angie's List give them such an award.

I am the owner of an established and reputable business in the Chicago area. We have had calls from Angie's List representatives for the past year, attempting to convince us to sign a yearly contract and PAY for business leads. After a year of calls from their sales people, I was interested in hearing what they had to say, so I took the time this morning to hear them out. On a sidebar, I thought it was ironic and timely, as I actually watched one of their commercials on television last night.
The contradiction: The commercial, as they have always touted, is that Angie's List is different. The homeowner signs on for an annual membership of $35.00 to locate highly-rated contractors in their area to provide services. The fact that they are (now) attempting to get contractors to PAY THEM for business leads is contrary to their advertising campaigns. In the past, they have slammed HomeAdvisor for their business model (yes, they are bad!) for having a system where the contractor is actually paying for internet generated leads (or should I write desperate business owners, that need customers!), versus Angie's List, where they will have the homeowner paying for annual memberships.
By doing so, these homeowners will obtain the Angie's List of reputable, licensed contractor. Ha, that's bunk! Frankly, a well-established business DOES NOT need Angie's List for their little projects. Now, contrary to their advertising, they are going after and using the disreputable Boogie-Man, aka HomeAdvisor's method of business, by getting the contractor to pay for leads. Based upon what I read on this site, it's obvious that both models have not been working for them and they are nose-diving into business failure and extinction.
Consumers have jumped ship and discovered that they DO NOT like Angie's List to find local and reputable business contractors and reputable contractors have found that they were scammed and DID NOT receive the leads promised by Angie's List to generate new business. Either way, it simply does not work. Thank you Consumer Affairs for this internet forum - I sincerely mean it! It has saved me from making a huge mistake many times in the past and I hope your site continues to saves others like me both as a homeowner and a business owner.

Once I created the account, I was routed and rerouted and rerouted to a page that insists I pay for the service in order to read the reviews. This would also be fine except there is an explanation stating I Don't Have to be a Member. One screen states, "Membership awaits! Please complete your membership to access thousands of local reviews, discounts and services, and our complaint resolution team. Join Now. If you choose not to join at this time, you will remain signed up to receive email updates from Angie's List." Be warned - there is No Way to navigate around this screen so you must "Join Now" which brings up the pay table, hit the back arrow or exit the screen and start over.
I opted to exit the site, and start over. Upon navigating to the site again, I saw that I was "signed in," and was permitted to search for deals. In this manner, I purchased two deals for home service: one for installing a fan at 35% off, and the other for servicing my H.V.A.C., at 65% off. I paid via PayPal with no issues whatsoever or reference to needing a paid account. However, when I checked my PayPal account, I was charged full price for the "Deal." Additionally, the service companies sent me an email to confirm the date of the service; but in order for me to reply, I had to go back into Angie's List and Pay to Read the Emails!
So now I'm charged almost $200.00 more than I was supposed to be charged and in order to move forward, I must pay more to become a member! Wow! He told me that generally speaking general contractors will give you a price based on $150 per square foot with a minimum of 1000 square feet so he wasn't interested in doing anything that we wanted...only basically wanted to use us to fund his retirement fund (Note we paid $170K for the whole rest of the house).
He also asked if I had a engineer come out and look at doing drawings for the project. Since I had not, I asked him to recommend someone. He sent me an e-mail with the person's phone contact information. When I called the person, said that he had gotten other leads from Angie's List that went nowhere so he didn't have time to be kicking tires and then hung up on me.
Angie's List is supposed to be a resource for people who don't know where to begin to get an idea of experiences that other people have had with the services. When the people you contact flat out tell you that they don't want to do the work because of how you got their contact information, there is seriously something wrong with the way that Angie's List is being run for them to have that reaction.

My husband ** is a retired disabled veteran who does the actual cleaning and he does a very good job. We strive to give excellent customer satisfaction and we do. Angie's List hounded us for a year to sign up and pay to advertise. They guaranteed us a high ranking on their first page and they promised specialized care with an account manager who would ensure we got leads.
When they did not list us accurately and the acct manager hung up on us, we cancelled after only 3 days. Angie's List pulled our listing and does not even acknowledge us as a business in Birmingham even though we have excellent reviews. Angie's List is definitely not Customer driven. Only businesses that PAY are listed, so if you are looking for a good Carpet Cleaner or Contractor, I suggest you actually TALK to your neighbors to find out who is the best. Angie's List is unethical and their business model cannot last much longer. They cannot continue to say they are customer driven, but charge businesses for advertising. They are not a true review site, they are really an advertising/marketing company and need to be recognized as only that. Only paying businesses can be listed. If you are looking for a review on a company, try somewhere else.

I own a reputable business and take pride in the services we provide our clients. I began using Angie's List several years ago. Over the years my fees have increased close to 40% even though I dropped out the "the book." The level of service has declined. My account has changed hands so many times I didn't know who my rep was. That is, until my contract was close to expiration and he began calling. Lucky for me, I turned my advertising over to a marketing company, so I let them deal with Angie's List. What's ironic is, the marketing company isn't putting Angie's List into the advertising budget. They don't feel it is a "value" for me. I have to say that I agree because Angie's List hasn't done anything except take my money.
I was going to complain about Angie's List resolution methods and how Angie's List supports crackpot reviews. My business recently suffered an F rating from an unstable client. But after reading issues from non-business members, it has become apparent that Angie's List supports crackpot business, also. It's all about the dollar! The “resolution” department is useless to resolve disputes for the business owner and the customer. So, here is the good news. My contract is about to expire and I am NOT going to renew.

January 2014 we won the Angie's List Super Service Award. A few days later we got banned because we were protecting our rights due to a member blatantly lied in her review which caused irreparable damage to our reputation. Angie's List was supplied all our information to show we were telling the truth. They replied by saying we're not a mediator and we can't get involved so the review stays and my company will remain banned for life!! Instead of helping the consumer to choose a reputable company for their product they are misleading the members with bogus reviews!!!

Angie's List advertises that it is free to join. When I went to their site and entered my information and clicked okay, a new screen came up whereby, you had to subscribe to their newsletter or magazine for a fee! Angie's List takes the "R" out of free. They aren't even honest about themselves, so I certainly wouldn't expect them to be honest in their reviews. It turns out that they charge fees to contractors as well as accepting advertising from them too. That's rather like the fox guarding the hen house. Angie's List is just another costly scam.

Angie's list has been the best advertising outlet we have ever used and we have serviced 1000s of customers through them. One of the problems I see with the people that complain is with the provider, not Angie's list. If you are Dealing with a A rated company or an F rated one, it's up to you and all you have to do is go on their page and write a review about the service. The Reason we have GREAT reviews is because we take care of our customers and they in turn give us GOOD REVIEWS.

When signing up with Angie's List I was told as a service provider my company would constantly rotate in the top three spots of the searches in my area. I wanted more exposure and signed up based on that promise. After I signed up I realized after time that I was always in the third position. I inquired about this and was told that the metrics had changed and in order to move up in the rankings I had to do all these other things like get more reviews, post e-commerce deals, sell these e-commerce deals, etc. I contacted Angie's List again with the intent to cancel and was told that if I cancelled early I would be charged a $600 early termination fee. They did not much care that their representative gave me false information to get me to sign up, but they did care very much about the $600 if I cancelled.
To add injury to insult, I am now in the tank over $1200 with Angie's List and have not received a single lead. To be fair, I did receive two emails from members to whom I responded, but then got no further response from them. It seems odd that I got more business from Angie's List before I paid them any money. And after attending a contractor summit in January, I found that my story is not unique, I have heard this from other contractors as well. I am not happy with Angie's List as I feel they falsely advertise their services and the benefits of those services. I do not recommend signing up with Angie's List on a paid basis. Keep the profile simple.

I have received many emails from Angie's List in the past several months, but not a single one (or even a message in the accounts "message" section when I go online) telling me that they were going to auto-renew. I had even received messages within the account making offers to renew my account. When I contacted them this morning via chat, their remedy was that in the FUTURE, they could send me emails or messages if I wanted them. Out $35 and have never saved any money with this company. Buyer BEWARE of Angie's List. I cancelled the PayPal auto renewal a few minutes ago. Angie's List now lists my account as expired, but PayPal has still taken the money.

Joined Angie's list a month or so back as I moved to a new house in Bala Cynwyd and needed some work done. Bought three services/deals. The first was electric work and the experience was great. The second purchase included work that needed more time than I had purchased, so I requested the handyman complete the work with extra payment. After the two hours I had initially purchased, I was told the handyman was no longer available for more work. So I was back on Angie's list looking for another worker. In addition, the work done included raising a bed, but two days later the bed was separated from the raised platform the handyman had fixed. My third experience was buying 2 hours work for 150 dollars.
Most of the work needed more time so I got the work done and turned out expensive. The payment was very unclear and according to the final invoice that came in two installments the handyman charged by the hour on day one, then by the work done on the second day, then by the hour on the third day. The worker sent by the handyman did not report the correct number of hours he had worked.
At the end of the day, Angie's list offer deals that are useless as they end up costing as much as any other business you would call for the service through the yellow pages. If you want to establish a new contact for services such as electrical, plumbing or carpentry when moving to a new city, Angie's list does not work when you get an electrician or plumber who can't come back to complete the work and you are back searching for another service agent. Besides, the rates are not discounted, rather, end up costing a whole lot more that you would pay from the yellow pages. Save yourself money and forget about Angie's list or their contractors/service providers. Better off going to your local hardware and requesting an electrician, carpenter or plumber.

Angie's List contacted us last summer regarding advertising with their company. Consumers are the ones that add companies to Angie's List with good and bad reviews. We were told that we would be paying for a web advertisement that only a select number of businesses could be a part of. We would be one of the top businesses that would come up in a search by a consumer on Angie's List's website. This however was so far fetched because after 7 months of absolutely no jobs from advertising, when we contacted our account manager, she stated that we were number 14 out of 20 on the list and were placed on the 2nd page of their web search. When asked how we could be moved up to the first page, she couldn't answer that question and couldn't provide me with an answer as to what we were even paying for. They are a scummy business that doesn't provide the service they state.

We advertised with Angies list for 2 years. Every thing worked well. This year we decided to spend our advertising money elsewhere (because the rate increased). We received phone calls every day to encourage us to advertise. Often more than 1 call per day from different reps. The number of calls was very frustrating. We began to track the number of calls and asked the reps to please stop calling. They even threatened to revoke our super service award if we did not advertise with them. Unfortunately their business model doesn't work. (80% of Angies list income is from service providers.) This creates a frantic push upon their sales staff to generate more $ by harassing service providers. It is unfortunate dilemma because the concept is good for consumers.

I have been an Angie's List contractor for 33 days, two payments of $270.83. I have not received one single phone call. I need to take a deep breath, so frustrated right now. I have been trying to contact an account representative for 4 days and can not get a response from anyone. After experiencing these issues I started checking reviews, and what do you, this is a very consistent problem with Angie's List. I submitted "fetch review" 2 1/2 months ago with no results, I have mailed in two paper form reviews that they will not post. They told me I would circulate up and down on the scroll list, I have never moved from the bottom.
I am a licensed and insured contractor who is being forced to compete with unlicensed contractors. Angie's List said, not their problem, they do not police or enforce any state law license issues. Consumers beware. I am sure there are some success stories out there, but I do not see this as a good investment for me or for the unsuspecting consumer. I think they have me over a barrel, if I stop paying they will report to the credit agencies.

Been reading some of the complaints about Angie's List and I didn't see any that actually point out the real problems with their services. So I thought I'd add my two cents and hope it helps someone from getting scammed. Angie's List advertises that "Businesses can't pay to be on Angie's List." But what they don't tell the consumers is that businesses MUST pay to be found on Angie's List. Businesses pay thousands of dollars a month to be on the first and second page of their field in the search lists. Hundreds to thousands more if they want the "Honor Roll" which they advertise to the consumers as they offered something special and were extra good companies. All they have to do is maintain A or B rating and they receive an invoice to be on the "Honor Roll."
First X number of companies to pay are granted the award. Something for all their other awards. And those Big Deal pricing... Did you know that Angie's List keeps 50-100% of that expecting the companies servicing them to provide the service for 1/2 off to free? When asked how they are supposed to stay in business offering these, their response was "Up sell when you get there, and if they don't need anything else, make them think they need something else." Then they tell their consumers that they will get discounts off discounted rates without the business owners approval then tell the business owner who has already vested thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in them that they must approve or they will be removed.
The whole concept of Angie's List is a scam. They may have set out to do it right to begin with, but they don't anymore. The people at Angie's List don't lift a finger for the businesses or consumers without making money, big money. It should be illegal, but somehow, they get away with it. In the end, when the consumer buys products from Angie's List businesses, they will pay 20-40% higher than they need too because the costs of Angie's List have to be made up somewhere. I know this because I've been paying them now for 2 years and every time someone says they found me on Angie's List, I cringe and know my prices have to go up for them. Especially if they bought a "Big Deal" which I haven't even authorized. My contract is finally coming to an end and I can free up a ton of advertising money.
My advise to consumers, if you want a good company and insist on using Angie's List, go to the bottom of the listing... example you need a plumber, go to the last plumber listed with an A rating with only 1 or two reviews and call him. He hasn't been on Angie's List long enough to get caught up in the routine of paying thousands of dollars yet so you might actually still get a good deal from him. Also NEVER buy a Big Deal. You can always get a bigger deal from calling the company direct.
My advise to businesses, when you start getting the 900 calls a week from Angie's List trying to sign you up because one of their customers gave you an A rating, don't. They will sucker you in with a low price of advertising them, then before you know it like they are like a vacuum cleaner on a dirt hill. You'll suddenly realize all of your marketing money is gone and your prices have had to go up 20% just to make a profit.

Overall, it did not go well for us. We chose to pay over 500 per month for advertising with Angieslist. Angieslist told us that we could expect 4 to 6 calls a day from advertising with them. Once our advertising began we did not see any results. We waited for a month with no change and then AngiesList told us that creating Store Front offers with them would help, so we created 5 of them. We were also told to wait until our magazine ad was published and we did. We waited over a month and still did not have any business from advertising with AngiesList.
We were then told we should run some AngiesList Big Deals to help generate some reviews for our business. Angieslist said that more reviews would help us get more business from advertising with them. So, we ran some Big Deals where AngiesList made money from them but it was at a loss on our end. We did a total of 12 Big Deals. This was going on our second month and to date we had only gotten one paying job from advertising with AngiesList. Our phone was not ringing. The Big Deals were done at a loss for us and we only did them to help get more reviews, however, we only got 1 review from doing 12 Big Deals.
AngiesList then stated that they would run their fetch a review program. They said it takes about 3 weeks. We waited 3 weeks and only got 1 more review. At this point we had to make the decision to stop paid advertising with Angieslist. They had made over 2000 dollars from us and we had received only 1 profitable job from advertising with them. We felt like we consistently got the run around. Their response was always to do something, which we did, or that it takes time to see results. However, with the amount of time it was taking we would wind up going out of business. Our advertising dollars are much better spent elsewhere, which is the reason we stopped paid advertising with Angieslist.
Also, note that when we were paying for advertising we were in the top 3 of the search results for our area consistently. Which, just proves to us that Angieslist advertising just wasn't worth what they were charging us. We wanted to share our story to shed some insight for other businesses who were considering paid advertising with Angieslist. For us it was not worth it and at the least we would advise you to be very cautious.

Once the complaint is filed you have specific time period to respond and defend yourself through Angies paper work and their schedule. The pressure is to settle regards of the nonsense. Here where it gets nasty - If you mention that you previous informed the member, that if they did not stop their harassment you would take legal action to force them to stop. To Angie that is a legal threat. You will then get an email from SP Integrity, (which just happens to be AngiesList employees) stating that if you take legal action you will be removed from the list. I told him "okay", and that I was willing to give it a shot for 2-3 months to see if it would provide any benefit.
I was EXPLICIT with him that if after 60-90 days I didn't see any results, I would pull the plug. He said he understood and assured me that I would see huge results. They run a fancy system of metrics and algorithms that tell you how much industry revenue is generated in your area and convince you that you're missing out on it, but once you sign with them it's all yours. This is not the case.
I let the scam run on for over 4 months and only received 2 phone calls. One was an easy quick repair that generated $85, the other was a complete beatdown of price negotiations - all for $125 repair. I called up to Angie's List and told them I was cutting them off for the following 2 reasons: The phone calls did not come in droves as promised. I was not a priority search as promised.
This, however is not the reason for the review. The REASON for the review is because shortly after canceling, I was nailed with a 500 DOLLAR cancellation fee that they automatically hit to my bank account. My ROI was RED before, now it was BLOOD RED. I quickly called Chase Bank to tell them that fraud had been committed - they canceled the card and were about to reimburse me when I told them I didn't want Chase's money - I wanted MY money from Angie's List. I was then transferred to the Chase collections department where we phone conferenced in to Angie's List customer service. I warned the customer with plenty of notice that I would pull my crew off the job if she didn't pay the agreed amount. She refused. This same customer went on Angie's list and rated our company with an F rating. Our side of the dispute did not matter.
At one time Angie's reps told me the person was not a member and no one would see the complaint. The disgruntled customer joined Angie's list after that and now it looks like our company is nothing but a dishonest fly by night. Angie's reps told me the only way I could change the rating is if I recruited some of my good customers to pay Angie a monthly fee and then they could get my rating up by writing good things about our company. I have and maintain an A+ rating with the BBB in Tarrant County. They don't allow a mad customer to ruin a company's reputation on 1 complaint like Angie's list does and then want you to recruit your customers to join for a fee to offset the bad complaint received. Well, I knew there weren't 57 hypnotherapists in my city, but I figured they would list some who were in nearby cities. After paying both the basic membership fee and an additional fee to use the healthcare list, I discovered that most of the listings were far away -- too far to be practical for visiting, say, once a week. In addition, the list of "top rated" people included an acting coach. That acting coach may use hypnosis in coaching, but that doesn't make him/her a hypnotherapist. Angie's list may be useful if you're looking for a house painter or plumber, but I recommend you do NOT sign up just to use it to search for more specialized services.

First, we would like to thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to read this. We hope that our professionalism, integrity and honesty will help you in making the decision to hire us.
Angie's List (AL) is a ONE-sided company. We were Service Providers (SP) up until October 13, 2014 but no longer hold that position as Angie's List has made the decision to "excluded us from category and keyword searches and maintain our ineligibility to advertise or obtain a Super Service Award". This decision was made through the Angie's List SP Integrity Department because we "stood up" for our Company by responding to a review that was recently placed on our page.
AL states that they have an open forum when it comes to reviews, however that is a COMPLETE & BLATANT lie. AL allows the Members to write whatever they want, whenever they want and about whomever (SP) they want even if it is NOT the truth.
Example #1. If A Member states that they called a SP and that SP did not return the call, AL permits that Member to write an "F" review...
Example #2. Members are allowed to upload pictures along with their review, but what do the SP get? Oops, nothing! SP are only allowed to reply to the review in writing but at NO TIME are SP allowed to upload any before and after pictures.
Example #3. Member's Refund... SP do not deal with refunds if we have not performed any work. That is the SOLE responsibility of AL. A few times we have had to provide refunds directly through AL for different reasons (scheduling problems or project not under our "scope of work") but did you know that Member Services will tell the Member that they HAVE TO provide an "C-F" rating for a refund? Yes, that is correct! A Member MUST provide an "C-F" rating in order to escalate their refund request... So in the meantime, the SP's overall rating and reputation are damaged while AL verifies information from both parties, (sometimes this can take weeks) so in the meantime, if another Member views our profile, they view these "F" ratings.
Example #4. Members are permitted to write a review on a SP even though it is the wrong Company they are writing a review about. Yes, this has happened several times. Members have called in or emailed a review on L&D Renovations when we don't even know of this Member. In fact, after receiving a recent "F" review, we contacted AL and explained that the Member made a mistake in the SP's name, but nothing was done. We had to actually visit this Member's home only to find out that this Member DID hire a SP (Not us) and when she requested a review form to fill out, AL emailed her one with our name on it. Not noticing that the SP name was incorrect, she completed the review and submitted same. It is too late now, but it took us to drive to her home and request that the Member retract her review. Again, AL did NOTHING! It's pretty sad that we had to take time out of our busy schedule to track down a Member to save our **!
Example #5. The last 'F" review, dated September 30, 2014 was the review that made us write "Our View On Angie's List". This Member lied throughout his entire review and AL did nothing to stop it. When we called him "out on it", that is when L&D Renovations' contract was terminated. He stated the following but "for some unknown reason" this Member's review has been deleted, however our response is still up for Members to view... I guess, he figured out that he was caught in several lies.
Member Comments: I called to find out if they were available, they said they could go over the house, give a price and then go to work the next day. My fear was because they had a $250 coupon that their rates would be jacked up to give the appearance they were giving you a discount. Prior to them coming we had gotten prices from both Lowe's and Home depot so we had an idea. Their charges would have been 3 times the amount the store would have charged me. So much for coupons and deals, it would have worked out to over $100 hour per worker. Good money.. It was strange when I asked if I should buy the coupon online, she was insisted that they would just give me the discount and not to worry purchasing it online with Angie's?? Strange. We refused to do work with them, if they can't be trusted with the little things how could you trust them with the big things... Beware of folks bearing gifts, be a smart consumer and know what other charge!!!!!
F.Y.I. Members pay a annual fee $40.00 (sometimes changes), but did you know how much a SP pays? Thousands a month! To upload our SP's information without any advertising, that's free. Advertising rates depend upon what the SP wants... (We have paid $60 - $160 per month). Now for the Member's Big Deals, that is where the fees go "through the roof". Those fees range from 25% - 50%... (The most we have paid is 40%)... Oh, but wait... SP cannot offer Big Deals unless we advertise. You see Members, when you buy a big deal, we DO NOT get all of the money... Yes, that is correct. When a Member purchases a Big Deal, the credit card information is given DIRECTLY to AL. We, the SP do not see that information WHATSOEVER!
Example #1. A Member purchases a Big Deal for $149.00; SP only receives $89.40.
Example #2. A Member purchases a Big Deal for $250.00 for $500.00 worth of labor; SP only receives $150.00.
Example #3. A Member purchases a coupon for $1000.00 for an interior paint project; SP only receives $750.00.
Now, with all that said, I would like to state that AL's concept works. Members have saved money, while, yes we the SP's also made money. However it is time that Members know what truly goes on "behind closed door". AL's only takes care of their Members. Angie herself should realize that without her SP's she wouldn't have the business (money) she has now. Yes, she also needs Members, however Angie is not "laughing all the way to the bank" from the Member's money, it is the SP fees that help her do that.
Oh, and SP's can't even talk or email Angie directly. We do not have the right to know or are NOT important enough for that. We know that not all people act in the same manner and most Homeowners realize that some projects do not "go as planned".

Angie's List is completely unreliable. They remove negative reviews making their rating system a joke. I wrote a negative review of a landscaping company that took money for a job they did not complete. The review was extensive with pictures etc... The company lied about the work they did, they wouldn't return phone calls or texts and refused to refund my money.
I wrote a negative review and was soon contacted by Angie's List staff asking if I wanted them to assist in a resolution. I agreed. They contacted the company who at the very last second agreed to reimburse me 1/2 my money. I agreed because 1/2 is better than nothing. I then get an email from Angie's List said "Because this company has resolved the aforementioned complaint according to your request, we will discard the report you originally submitted. If you would like to provide a positive (A or B) report, based on your experience with this company, you may do so by completing the form below".
What the heck? This company is terrible! Why in the world would I want to give them a positive review? I would have been happy to update my complaint to include the resolution but to completely remove the review all together and force me to give a positive review is ridiculous! Can you imagine all the really terrible companies out there who can toss a few dollars to unhappy customers just to get their negative reviews removed? Angie's List is completely unreliable. I will never use them again.

I used Angie's list to hire a dog walker while my regular dog walker was on vacation. The new dog walker made me pay $20 to register me in his computer. I followed all his rules and booked him 2 months ahead of time for the 7 days my regular walker was on vacation. The dates were confirmed by email. He had 2 meet visits and was exactly explained the job I wanted done and the second time he raised his price $20. Since it was too late to book another, I agreed, he insisted on the first day prepayment and I sent him that. He showed up the first day with an assistant and I asked him why? He bitched and whined the whole time about the job but said he would be back the next day but needed to be an hour earlier and I agreed.
He never showed up the next day and left my dogs without someone to feed and walk them. I called him and he started yelling at me saying he never agreed to the entire 7 days. I reminded him of the emails we exchanged and he threatened to report me to the humane society for the way I cared for my dogs. I ignored that because the dogs had just been to the vet and both dogs are kept better than most people are. I wrote a truthful review of my experience on Angie's list, just as I have here. The guy who is the walker is an ex-lawyer and he has sent me 2 Legal Threats demanding that I remove my review as it is causing him loss of business! I contacted Angie's List and was told that they were not going to do anything about it, but I could remove my review if I wanted to! Now isn't that fraudulent advertising and practice?
I tried to get back into Angie's list site to remove the review to prevent this jerk from suing me for slander and they locked me out even though I had paid through the end of December. I have now hired a lawyer to take care of the mess! Need I say more?

I joined Angie's List on May 23, 2014 and paid a basic membership fee of $7.99. A couple of months after joining, I received email notifications from Angie's List introducing me to their "free" service called "Band of Neighbors." On or about August 5, 2014, I logged onto Angie's List web page to join the advertised Band of Neighbors, but without success. It showed my home in the wrong neighborhood on their map, and it would not allow me to move the location of my home on the map. I double-checked my account settings, confirmed that my home address was entered correctly, and tried again, but to no avail.
When I called Angie's List and spoke with a customer service representative, he told me that basic membership allowed me to only deal with issues by email, not by telephone. So I hung up the phone and emailed my complaint to Angie's List. The return email the next day told me to do the same thing that I had already done - go into my account profile and confirm that my home address was entered correctly. I tried again to join Band of Neighbors but, once again, it would not show my home in the correct neighborhood. On or about August 8, I called again and spoke with Angie's List customer service rep and explained my issues. He informed me that he could help me by telephone only if I upgrade my membership and pay Angie's List more money. My response to him on the phone was, "So I must give you more money before I can join Band of Neighbors?" His response was simply, "By upgrading your membership with Angie's List, you'll receive more benefits." He would not admit yes or no to my direct question.
To this day, I have attempted every day to join Band of Neighbors, but to no avail. Angie's List has not corrected the map issue, and I feel certain they will not correct the map issue until I pay $29.99 to upgrade my annual membership. Considering that Angie's List has advertised "Band of Neighbors" service to be a "free" service, and the web page will not allow me to join, I allege herein that I have been the victim of false advertising and I have asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Angie's List policies and procedures and have them cease advertising "Band of Neighbors" as a "free" service.

It is about as easy to Fake a review as it is to create a FaceBook account and use any name you want! So why is Angie's List so great that they think we need to pay them for their services? I do not know but I can tell you as a Contractor myself I end up getting a review or two from customers who felt I did right by them so they left me some reviews. To this day I have not read the reviews but I received a phone call from an Angie's List rep offering me some kind of special advertising and a specialist who would help me design and create a web page sort of thing that would show my reviews, images of my work and the cost of my service was based on the number of customers that have access to my review page. The problem is I did not create my review page and I did not have any time to create the page so I told the lady I would go ahead and "TRY" the service and see how well it worked.
So I paid about $69 to get started and within about 2 weeks I was contacted by a rep from Angie's List who was supposedly the guy who was responsible for designing and creating my page. I told this rep that my little sister was to handle all of my website and review page affairs and he would have to get in touch with her because I was too busy working, doing what I do to create web pages. Not that I do not know how - I just do not have time.
Well this person tried to contact my little sister Once or TWICE and then she and I NEVER heard from him Again! Furthermore Angie's List NEVER Designed or created any page that I was able to look at and approve or deny, like or dislike! After paying for Angie's List for about 6 months I never received so much as ONE Customer who had said, "Hey, I read your review on Angie's List and I want some work done!" However I had about two customers a Month call me who had found my name on a wall somewhere or on some other website but Not ONE on Angie's List!!!!
When I was speaking with the first sales lady, one of her sales points was, "If you get just ONE Job from Angie's List it will be worth what you spend the entire YEAR!" Well, they wanted about $69 a month, A grand total of $829.00 a Year and in the Year I did not get so much as ONE Phone call or email! So I am not sure how much I paid out before I contacted Angie's List and told them to CANCEL my account that I was dissatisfied with this EXCUSE for Service they claim to provide and them charging me for 6 MONTHS and not keeping their end of the deal! I told them that the sales lady promised me a personal staff member to assist in design and creating my review page and that this person had (SUPPOSEDLY) Tried TWICE to get hold of my little sister and/or me to create this page.
At no time was I ever asked if I was satisfied and approved the page to be launched!! So what exactly was Angie's List charging me for? I told them that At this point I had paid for the service for nearly or over six months and had not so much as ONE call or Email and the cost at this point was over $400 so I asked how that benefited me at all to pay $69 a month and receive absolutely ZERO customers? Well, I was told that it was not a problem to cancel my service but that I had to pay for an early termination fee. I told them to go right to hell that at no time did I EVER Agree to any specific term of time and I was not going to pay any fee. Furthermore, I was not canceling my service because I no longer wanted it. I was canceling it because I felt it was Theft and outright FRAUD because they made promises they did not keep! And they absolutely did NOT deliver ANY of the services the sales rep told me they deliver!!!! Furthermore they are based out of the East coast and I am in Hawaii so one of the reasons they can NEVER Get hold of me is because of the time difference but still that is no excuse for completely failing to deliver on all the products and services they promised me!!
A few months after making it crystal clear that I wanted to CANCEL my account, I received a phone message from some new rep that I never heard from before stating that they "TRIED" Charging my card Again and the funds did not process!! I was in complete shock. I had not even heard from Angie's List in a few MONTHS and now they call to tell me that they failed to charge my credit card? Wow, I thought I had told them to go to hell and made clear they no longer had any permission, nor ever had any permission to just charge my card any time they wanted!! So I called the number back and of course given the time difference I did not get her on the phone but I was able to leave her a voice mail.
I explained that I had canceled my supposed "services" MONTHS Ago and they had NO Permission to make any attempts on my card! I told her that Angie's List had failed to provide services they sold and I wanted to make it absolutely clear that they would NO Longer try to charge my card and I said "I CANCELED My account MONTHS Ago so if you did not get the memo, it does not surprise me but Get it through your head and STOP Harassing me!!" I expressed that I felt it was theft, Fraud and outright harassment! And I never wanted to hear from them again PERIOD! And I threatened to start leaving reviews of my own about Angie's List if they attempted to charge my card again and/or tried to contact me again, and/or failed to cancel my membership!!!
I did not hear back from them till today when I received a letter from "Pangaea" A credit collection service asking me to respond within 48 hours of receiving their letter. They had Angie's List claiming that I owed them $219.26! I phoned them and left them a message and I said "Angie's list Owes me 2 BILLION Dollars so what do you think about that? How on earth do you send me such a letter just because Angie's List claims I owe them? Angie's List Lied and sold me a service that I paid for but Absolutely DID NOT GET! So I not only do not owe them but they Owe me!" I told them a few other things about going to Hell and left my phone number and "Account Number".
We will see how this turns out in the long run but I find it really funny that Angie's List sales reps can pretty much promise to sell you anything and absolutely NOT Deliver and then THINK they have you locked down into some contract or cancellation fee that I NEVER Agreed to!! So I guess if they can send me to collections for any amount they figure I owe them, I can tell their collection company that they owe me 2 BILLION dollars and see if it gets me as far collection my 2 Billion from Angie's List as they will collecting from me?
Have fun sending a rep to Hawaii to take me to court Angie's List!! Oh BTW I guess they should consider what might happen if I go to my local court house and file a claim against them for failing to honor their contract or perhaps they should consider Hawaii state law that VERBAL Contracts are just as abiding as written and their verbal contract stated they would provide me with staff to design and create a review page that I WOULD APPROVE and only AFTER I approved it would it appear on the web site but this never happened so why then was I charged at all?
So when I go to my local court house and file a claim against them, I wonder if they will settle or pay for someone to come out to Hawaii and TRY to fight it. Because the judges here likely like Angie's List about as much as I do. I never really liked that Angie Hicks or whatever her name is. She is a really UGLY Looking woman and I'd rather eat some dog crap than to ever see her nasty butch hair cut on another TV ad in my life!!! But this review really is not about Angie herself. It's about this crooked Fake service!! This is not a service at all. It is a scam and it is about time the people realize they do not need Angie's List. I still get phone calls from customers every month but never One time has any single one of them come from, seen or read anything about me on Angie's List!! I think Angie and Craig should get Married. Craig's List can sell Angie's List some children and be partners in Human trafficking!! Aloha.

I joined Angie'sList primarily to find a competent plumber for a small job: removing a radiator so I could have a floor repaired, then coming to put it back after the repair. I got a "deal" that was a TOTAL scam: $39 for a plumber visit, and $39 credit toward work. It cost $39. The guy came over and it took literally ONE turn of a wrench to take off the radiator. Great. Then he handed me a bill for over $200 worth of materials--when he used ZERO materials. Things turned ugly fast, with the business owner hanging up on me, they're leaving many threatening calls demanding their $, they're lying about what they told me the cost would be, etc.
Angie'sList told me they could help me resolve my complaint IF I agreed to leave a positive review for this company with an A or B rating! That is IMMORAL. I could never recommend such a shady company. But Angie'sList left me zero way to communicate this terrible experience to others. They just said: Sorry, but when you agreed to complaint resolution, you agreed to leave a positive review for the company. So long story short: Do NOT trust any reviews on this site--they are probably coerced. Angie's List is a scam.

I am writing from a contractor’s point of view. We were members of Angie's List for many, many years and have always taken good care of the customers that came from Angie's. However, this year we decided to drop out, due to the high pressure of Angie's salesman asking us to spend more. We are already not getting enough customers to pay for the expense of the advertising. We were losing thousands of dollars. You know what they told us? "You’re not charging enough. We did a cost analysis on your business and found other contractors are charging more than you. You need to up your prices." Who are they to tell us to charge you more for services rendered! They have been doubling our rate for the last couple of years to continue with them. Possibly due to many contractors dropping out from dissatisfaction would be my guess.
Their commercial on TV says that contractors do not pay to be on Angie's List but if you do not pay for advertising they bury you so deep on the list that no customers can find you in their search engine unless you already know who you’re looking for. We were always told that if we remain an A plus rated company we would always get an "ANGIE'S SUPER SERVICE AWARD" which we have done from the beginning. Now this year they yanked it from us not because of bad reviews "We have always made A's" but because we were graded on a curve and we lost the award due to not having enough reviews. How do we get that back you ask? Angie's said you have to spend more money, to get more customers, to get more reviews! How's that for your bottom dollar? We have to pass this expense to our customers because of Angie's greed for higher and more profits on the backs of you and us.
They are making small mom and pop companies like us who have a limited advertising budget pay lots more money to compete with larger deep pocket companies who have unlimited advertising dollars. Angie's did not start out like this but I guess Angie found it was too easy to suck us dry and I think she wants a bigger mansion. LOL. Believe me reviews can be fudged if you are dishonest. There are ways to fool them with false positive reviews. Put your boots on when looking at the reviews because you could find yourself standing in deep ** .That is something we have never done ("fudge reviews"). I posted a business on Angie's list a few months ago. I had some one working for me as an alternate contact. When no one could get a hold of me they called my alternate contact. Instead of leaving a message for her to give me, they let her sign contracts on my business account. Which in all fairness is partly my fault, I should not have trusted her, but Angie's List should not have discussed anything with her other than for me to contact them.
Meanwhile once all the money had been paid. My alternate contact went in and totally deleted me from my business. When I called AL, I was told there was nothing they could do. So pretty much they handed her my business on a silver platter. So I had all of my Information removed from the company and told them she could not pass a background check. She has a felony. I was assured all of this would be taken care of.
I built that business, I could build another. Lesson learned. I was overdrawn on my bank account couldn't figure out why. So just last week I paid my $7.99 and joined the supposedly wonderful site, Angie's List. I needed someone to fix my leaky outdoor faucet. So what was one of the first things I saw but a $49 deal on exactly that, offered by what I thought was a local vendor. Happy to get what I thought was a great deal, I paid Angie's List for it via PayPal and got a quick email scheduling the service for yesterday 9-11 AM. So far so good, right? Wrong. 11 AM came and went. No show, no call. I called the local number and got somebody in the next town, no explanation, no apology, they just tried to reschedule the job 10 days hence. I asked for and got a local person, a tech who rescheduled for 1-3 PM the next day. A little better. So the next day, 3 PM came and went, no show, no call, nothing.
I called back the local number and again got someone in the next town. Asked for the tech of the previous day by name, was put on extended hold only to be told he's "not answering." They asked for my address which I gave and was put on another extended hold. Somebody else came on the line, still in the next town, who knew absolutely nothing about me or the situation or the reason for my call. At that point I related what happened and said I wanted to cancel the service and get a refund. What I heard was, "You'll have to call Angie's List for that." And they hung up. So I called Angie's List. I went through an operator who transferred me to the "Big Deal" line. I sat on hold for over 20 minutes of the most ghastly music imaginable.
Think Flintstones theme song and Hey hey we're the Monkeys. Finally some perky person came on the line, who would not take my request for a refund until I went through her lengthy script detailing all the issues and answering a gazillion questions. Finally she said they'd send me an email with a few questions to answer and IF they determined I wasn't lying they'd process my refund in 7-10 days. 7-10 DAYS?? You know how much interest they can make on aggregate funds in 10 days?? And it sure as shootin' didn't take them 7-10 days to take money from me for a service not yet performed! So the email came with the same exact questions I had just answered, only now I was expected to give the answers in writing. I filled out and submitted the form and got an autoresponder notice saying again 7-10 days for any refund. I contacted PayPal and opened a claim, but they said about the same thing: up to 10 days for a refund. Hey, somebody's making money here and it sure ain't me.
I just want my money back so I can find somebody to fix my stinkin' leaky faucet. This is just garbage. I canceled the service, nothing was done, Angie's List took my money and won't give it back for over a week. Something's really wrong here. Honestly, I am completely disillusioned by Angie's List and will never use them again. I don't believe they're on the level. I'm convinced that that plumbing vendor has seeded their name with false positive reviews and I don't trust any of the other reviews either after this. No company who treated someone the way I've been treated can possibly have that many good reviews. And not only that, I strongly caution anyone not to pay Angie's List upfront for any of their so-called deals. They take the money, then if anything goes wrong, they take their time about giving it back, while it sits in their bank account earning interest.
This is not only an unfair business practice, but highly unethical at the very least even if not strictly illegal. I'd have demanded my money back for the subscription too if I thought I'd get anywhere with that. But I was hassled out for one day. Decided I'll just eat the $7.99 and consider it an investment in my education. What a load of garbage. This Angie's List is not what some people make it out to be. Furthermore, they're collecting money for vendors while claiming to be objective and in effect, acting as the vendor themselves. That's a conflict of interest for sure. Yeah, I should have known better than to pay for something before receiving it, but something really stinks about this whole thing. Just had to post a warning so maybe somebody else can avoid what happened to me.

You pay your dues to Angie. You file a review of a company. The review is an unfavorable review of a company. They will not publish it because they have a "CUT LIST". In essence if you write an unfavorable review it will go unpublished because they may want to have the company advertise and lose their business. I was told that they give the company a chance to respond to your review. A year and a half later no response, so they will not put it out for publication. They only publish "GOOD REVIEWS". So if you contract with a company that does lousy service, your money goes to waste with the famous ANGIE'S LIST. Save your money. Use the BBB better source. STAY AWAY FROM ANGIE'S LIST AND REBATH IN COLORADO SPRINGS, CO.

Joined Angie's List and purchased coupon for kitchen design from one of their featured businesses with an A rating and 48 reviews. When the business failed to deliver and I could not believe they had received such a high rating, I looked closer. They had received 55% A's, but the other 45% were evenly distributed from B to D with an average at best of C+. I asked the business for measurements, and they told me that would be $300 (the supposed value) of the coupon. When I said I had already paid $50 for something I could have gotten free at Home Depot or done myself with a free app, the business owner stated that the $50 went to Angie's List, not him. Angie's List advertises that they are impartial and do not get money from sponsoring businesses. This seems like a kickback to me. I cut my losses and quit Angie's List. They have not yet responded.

Angie's List is not your most reliable resource. You have one client who had a bad day and wants to be a jerk, they will try and bash the company's name using Angie's List. In a case where we were asked to settle and get the review taken down if we paid money to the client, you read that right pay the client x amount to get our bad review taken down. Go with word of mouth, referrals. Check out company's website, that is your best bet. I would not waste my time and money on Angie's List.

I looked for the company I was thinking of hiring on Angie's List and didn't see them, basically because they were using a different name. I found them later after I'd been scammed in the worst way possible, by putting in an address. Instead of Caring Transitions they were listed under CT and had a lot of really bad reviews. I added mine and then they changed the name of the company again and took out the full name and made it initials. I contacted Angie's several times and filed complaints, telling them what they were doing.
They are currently listed under a new owner and address, and the old company listed as closed, though you can't see that on Angie's List, I only see it by looking up my reviews on my account. All the bad reviews are gone and they are free to steal from other elderly widows with Angie's blessing. I'm telling everyone don't use Caring Transitions or Angie's List. They are both worse than scammers, worse than thieves, worse than liars. What they both did was criminal and I won't rest till they're out of business or preferably in jail.
