Angie's List sold me a $699 'Deal' to a fraudulent painting company to have 3 painters work at my house. When I tried to contact this company to use the deal, they never got back to me. I requested Angie's List to refund my $699, and I was told I had to work it out with the fraudulent company that had disappeared. Obviously that wasn't a path, so I tried to get my refund. I contacted Angie's List over 20 times in an effort to speak to someone, and was only sent emails that said it was not their problem to help me, despite the fact that my credit card has a $699 to Angie's List. Angie's List is supposed to be a firm to protect people from fraudulent companies, and not only do they represent them, they broker the robbery!

My company signed up with Angie's List thinking we would get jobs from it as we did with Home Advisor. Big joke! In the same time frame we were with Angie's List and got 0 job leads or calls from Angie's List, we received 30+ jobs from HomeAdvisor. We paid money to be listed in the top 3-4 contractors that would be listed for our area. I made several anonymous accounts on Angie's List as a customer to look for my company's scope of work for my area and my company NEVER appeared in the list!!! I am furious. I think Angie's List is a big scam!

They sale you advertising for your business. In my case it was $167.67 per month. Total cost per year is $2012.04. They do it by zip code. I asked for certain zip codes in my local area. They said I could not handle the amount of zip codes I wanted and would only give me 3. They said I could add more zip code later if needed. This was a lie since they charge you for more zip codes. I got 3 calls from Angie's list customers in the last 7 months of being on their list. Was only able to get 1 of the customers. I have the highest reviews you can get on Angie's List and Thumbtack that you can get. Total revenue from Angie's List 3 customers in 7 months listed is less than the cost of the service. At this point I am losing money and will never use them again. They have a very bad rating by business customers. Do not use Angie's List. It will cost you more than the money you make from the customers.

I am a contractor that has used Angie’s List for approx the last 10 years, I’ve won the super service awards in every category I could compete in, have almost a 100 A ratings, and I’ve seen Angie’s List go from a great service for contractors and customers to a joke. I’m now using another service called Thumbtack which is phenomenal! I give Angie’s List and the VERY disorganized sales-driven staff who have no idea what direction the company even offers, 2 years top before they are gone altogether. Look at these numbers of total reviews! Something very wrong and it is not the quality they once were, what a joke! To anyone considering go to Thumbtack or any other service.

Angie's List promised all these leads when it turns out they are selling all their leads to HomeAdvisor first which owns Angie's List. We were told they would call 5 of our customers for initial set up reviews and they only called two. So to this point 5 weeks later and 500 dollars later we have not received one call or lead. Angie's List already had a class action suit for similar issues.

THEY DO NOT DESERVE A STAR!! I have never been so disappointed in the LACK OF SERVICE that Angie's List provides. This comes on the heels of them offering previous service for free and now they want me to pay for correcting bad information given by their reps. What happened? I was able to previously call in and they would work with me to correct mistakes on their website. Now, because I do not have a "contract", they will not even speak to me!!!! No notice, no nothing. Just a recording that says I have to pay to speak to someone to correct a mistake on their website!!! Not doing it! But am definitely doing this. Pulling all our information from them, will tell everyone I know not to call/use them!! And will share this with anyone who will listen...

The paid advertisement had multiple issues and communicated over 10 times on this and paper bill. I have been lied to stolen from and my contract breached... complete runaround and waste of money... I never received one call for work and have communicated that I could tell my ad was being block or not working. AngiesList never fixed or took care of issue. I tried to reach them by phone, but the auto system claims I don't have phone support, so I searched for an email address...they don't have one! What?! So...no way to speak to a "customer representative". I am disputing the charge with PayPal (a fantastic company). I got talked into paid advertising with Angie's List. I signed up for a contract, unfortunately, thinking Angie's List was reputable since it is well known. It is not reputable at all! Look at the scores that they got on this website; I believe it's 1.5 out of 10. After four months of receiving absolutely not one phone call for my paid advertising I called Angie's List to cancel. This occurred on January 8, 2018. I was told that they had canceled my paid advertising during that call and then I would have to pay 35% of what was left on the contract, $620. I explicitly told them not to take any money out of my account until I had spoken to somebody in their finance department as I was told I could make payments on the remaining balance which was $218. My monthly bill was due on the 27th of each month yet without my permission they took the $218 out of my account again without my permission on the 24th.
This was after 10 phone calls to them asking them if I could make the agreed-upon payment arrangements upon the remaining balance. I was told each time That no money would come out of my account until I had spoken to somebody. I what is additionally told that somebody would call me the next day yet nobody did. Each time I called - 10 Times - I had to go into the very long story of how I had canceled my contract, was told I could make payment arrangements, and that I was supposed to receive phone calls that I never received. They were very nice to me until they actually pulled the money out of my account and then their attitude changed completely.
On the 10th phone call I was told that, "Oh well that's too bad," (that they took the $218 out of my checking account without my authorization) as I had signed a contract. That they were allowed to take the full amount owed out of your checking account after three days of speaking to someone, yet nobody had told me during any of those 10 phone calls that this money would be taken out three days after talking to them. That, in the left-hand did not know what the right hand was doing, so to speak. These people are imbeciles - meaning that they took the money out of my Checking account without my authorization even though they swore up-and-down they would not do that, which bounced checks all over town and oh well that's too bad that's my problem, I was told.
Not only do not pay for paid advertising with Angie's List, run; do not walk away as these people are rip off artists and are scam artists that couldn't care less but their reputation is after they rip you off and they have absolutely no credibility whatsoever. They are sleazy, scumbag business operators. They have no scruples, no morals no ethics whatsoever. Do not get paid advertising with this horrible, unscrupulous so-called business.

I canceled the account twice before, but they keep billing every year. The service that I cancelled before and have not used in 3 years since long before 1st canceled. The contact phone numbers give a message that only special accounts can reach anyone by phone. The on-line makes you agree to their terms before even leaving a message. Paths to deal with their fraudulent charges are blocked unless you agree to their terms. I think they hope that most people will give up on a $30/year perpetual charge. Cute, an organization claiming to help prevent fraud that is fraudulent itself!
I now have to cancel my PayPal account to make sure they can't do this a 3rd time since PayPal make you prove that the charge is fraudulent, not making the seller prove the charge is currently agreed to even with no agreement to the terms they demand to even get to the website account. NEVER give Angie's List an account number to charge to! Even though I have not used the service in 3 years, I would now not even want any free referral they might propose.

As many reviewers before me I fell a victim of AL promises. I was told I would receive multiple calls daily since my business fit just right into a specific niche. Unfortunately several months and several thousands of dollars later I received exactly zero calls. When I mentioned my frustration to the saleswoman, she kept saying that I needed more reviews. Funny, she didn't mention that while I was signing up. Now I feel ashamed that I fell for the oldest trick in industry: my hard earned money for a remote possibility that someone will have mercy and call me. What really hurts is the fact that AL tried to blame me for their failure by saying that I misunderstood how the system operated. Lesson learnt.

Was a paying member of this service which purports to provide credible professionals and they sell "deals" of multiple contractors. Trouble is, these people they recommend do not respond and don't provide service for price within expiration date. So pay 399.00 for a painter for a day and it expires in 6 months. The painter can't fit you in within 6 months. So if you want service after, they can charge you anything more for you to get the 399.00 credit... Seems Angie's List isn't all it claims to be. Tried to break the contract because we can't afford to pay their fee anymore. All their employees seem to be programed to say the same thing, of course to their benefit. The sale pitch was making us believe there isn't a contractor in this area and this area really needs one. Haven't got any work as a result of being on AL, but according to AL that's our fault because we only listed two references, mind you jobs from other advertisement that we got. So if it's not in the contract how many jobs to list as references. Why accuse us of not using their site to the fullest potential? Here's a thought. Maybe we were actually going to use AL's clients as references once we got the jobs... You know all those jobs that you made us believe we'd get, oh that's right. AL's don't make any promises.
Well you made it sound like it was a win win! But the sales pitch call is only for their internal use, not like the call you make to them and say they're recorded (again only in their favor of course) so we can't request to have them played. Well if you have over 10 million happy customers why can't you get rid of the one that isn't happy and dissolve the contract without penalizing? Oh that's right, we signed a contract and they aren't willing to break it upon request, financial hardship or not. We paid over $2000 for 27 views and that's suppose to be acceptable, we want our contract canceled without their 35% of contract amount and they won't do it. Seems like they're the only ones in a win win here. I suggest advertising elsewhere, no reason to pay over $3000 for "views".

I have been a subscriber to Angie's List for years and gotten many good providers from the site. However, in recent years, it has been almost impossible to sign on, much less find or review providers. Moreover, unless you have an "upgraded" account, it is impossible to speak to a representative and are told by an automated system to sign in to "chat" with a representative. If I were able to sign in, I wouldn't have to call anyone or "chat" with a representative. I have advised providers that I wished to review that it is impossible to post a review, since the Angie's List website is the most difficult site to sign onto of any review platforms.

Angie's List has an integrity department! Got a one and only questionable review in 3 years of free membership plan on Angie's on my listing page. I am a small business and I know every customer I deal with. I don't know this person at all. Angie's List offered no assistance in trying to verify if it was legitimate, no mediation, no opportunity for me to oppose. Said they have no way to contact the person and no email address for the person who wrote the review, but nonetheless the review would remain forever. Told me I couldn't cancel the account and nothing could be done about it.
Told me to have others write a review and those reviews would drown out the bad one and lift my score. 5 people wrote positive reviews and AL won't post them. They stated they need those persons' history of addresses, all names used, all email addresses used, etc. BEFORE they would allow a review to post. Well why would they need all of that for a positive review, but have no information on the person writing the negative review? I believe AL discriminates against non-paid memberships as a way to get you to pay money to get their attention. Fishy Fishy! Angie's list is a joke. Integrity is a joke! No leads. After maybe two or three years of good relations with AL, I have had several complaints over the years along with many more outstanding reviews and have made top 5 contractor awards five years in a row. However I did have a couple of bad reviews over a 5 year period which never go away and are always calculated in your rating that placed me in a B category which no will call the B guy. Consequently I get no calls from AL yet they still want their money, yet some of the bad reviews that are on my profile are from one, a client I had to put a lien on his property because the jobs complete but he still owes me over $12,000.00 and I had no choice but to file a lien, yet his review stands on AL as legitimate complaint, another one is from a homeowner that got a full refund with a settlement stating he was not allowed to slander me yet his review still stands.
I truly believe AL has unleashed a monster they can't contain. I have been a faithful and professional contractor with AL and I come with over 37 years of experience and I have never had to deal with this type of nonsense in my entire career. If you value your reputation and want to protect your reputation you have no say so in the matter when it comes to AL, they are only concerned with how they can shove their scam down consumers throats for more money.
I saw this coming over two years ago when I started getting calls from numerous other lead generators with better results and let AL know that this train wreck was headed their way, what I didn't even consider was AL figuring that choking the very people doing the service they advertise to provide was somehow going to keep them afloat now that the train wreck was on them. Seriously, Angie's List is now offering a webinar about online reputation being offered from Angie's List. You have got to be kidding. Angie's List supports end users abuse of review and complaint process in order to promote a reputation marketing service for business owners. Angie's List created the problem by allowing and supporting an end user to use the "give me my money back or else" practice, by not providing our company with the ability to be fairly and ethically support our position, then locked us out of our online account, and then offering a webinar to promote their "reputation marketing" seminar!
This is the same as tagging buildings then offering a graffiti removal service! Our Company, has received ten years of positive reviews (over 300) and tens years of multiple super service awards, was unfairly targeted by an end user who used the "give me my money back or else" practice with Angie's List. We stood our ground for ethical and moral reasons against abuse from an end user, were not supported by Angie's List even with endless discussions, emails and attempts to be fairly treated by Angie's List, and are now locked out of our online account, unless we accept terms and conditions which are unfairly one-sided.
Based on our reputation - recipient of over ten years of super service awards in multiple categories, Angie's List should have handled this situation differently. Based on the fact that we have paid up to $60,000 JUST TO BE SEEN by our customers on Angie's List, which was only possible by earning over ten years of super services awards in multiple categories, Angie's List should have handled our experience differently.
In the end, we learned; 1. Angie's List supports end users who abuse the review process, 2. Angie's List allows and supports end users to utilize the "give me my money back or else" tactics, 3. Angie's list fails to provide business owners with a fair and equal opportunity to be represented when such abuse occurs which places and unfair advantage on Business Owners resulting in tarnished reputations leading to money lost in missed sales, 4. Angie's List prevents business owners who are also clients of Angie's List from access to their accounts unless the business owners accept one-sided and unrealistic terms and conditions.
For the above-mentioned reasons, Angie's List webinar on "reputation marketing" as it relates to practices of Angie's List related to the review posting and handling of the complaints, doesn't really make sense. Also, it is evident at this point that Angie's List is still trying to find another revenue stream in order to stay relevant in today's market. American Drain Works is a small company who has been adversely affected by Angie's List most recent handling of an abuse by an end user and the current appearance and posting of the negative review and response. And, at current, we are not able to access our account. As such, Angie's List has earned an "F" rating from our small company.
As a small company, our client's rely on us to provide a service that they can respect and trust. As owners, we, the business owners, make an effort to meet with 99.99% of our clients with our staff, and we work hard along with loyal our staff to take care of our clients. Our clients are proud to have "a women owned plumbing company" take care of their plumbing problems. They feel safe, comfortable and we have become an extended part of many client families. When we have not met our client's expectations we work to make it right. We can not make everyone happy, although we try. There are times when the review process is used against us, regardless of what we have done to make it right from the beginning. We will not support companies who support and encourage end users to abuse our reputation as Angie's List has done.
After discussion with a few reputation marketing companies, it has been recommended to us to eliminate Angie's List from the list of sites to focus on and instead focus on the newer sites and locations where end users are sourcing to find a service company they and rely on and trust. If Angie's List fails to reach the expectations of their clients, as they have with our company, a loyal supporter of Angie's List for years, then there is no point to utilizing Angie's List as a platform in today's market.

I called Angie's list and they referred me to the electrician who said he never charged my account and Angie's list charged my account. Both refusing to return my money. What a scam Angie's list is. I called to put my company on AngiesList.com thinking we would generate leads. Spoke to a rep thinking he would be aware of my needs. We are a small mom and pop company. I thought I was signing a background check and instead he says I signed a contract which I did not think I was. My account was charged 16,999.99 which ruined my company. Was on Dallas and was not able to work or pay my employees. I call. They say "You have a contract" and they threatened my credit. Instead of growing it ruined us.
We worked very hard for our 5 star rated company compared to their 1 star and was completely blind sided. This is not for a small business wanting to grow and is a scam. So now we have nothing after all the years of blood sweat and tears. We are left with nothing and actually stuck in Dallas having to get a loan. Devastated is not even the answer. They are crooks and do not even give one lead. They do not do proper background checks or do good business. I begged to just redo my contract still trying to rip us off not even in my company's best interest. I am doing all I can to turn them over with the reps to Better Business Bureau and whatever I can do. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY UNLESS YOU LIKE GIVING OUT MONEY WITH NO RETURN. They will not return my calls now.

I have been a contractor working in the northern Virginia area for more than 20 years. In the past 3 years had a bad experience with a couple of unfair customers. The first one demanded that I continue to replace T1-11 siding boards when I had already replaced 30 boards and the contract stated about 18 to be replaced so they offered me to keep working and at the end they will pay me an extra $500 which I did not believe them because I found out by a neighbor that they had some issues with a previous contractor and they left, so they wrote a bad review to AngiesList.
So we went thru the dispute process but all that this company does is influence you to accept the customer's offer which I did not. The customers sued me for the entire contract amount which I only got half as downpayment so when we went to court the judge after presenting my evidence ruled in my favor so I contacted AngiesList with the proof that the court ruled in my favor and they refused to remove the review stating that only the customer can remove it. My question is: what recourse does a contractor has when someone can simply slander someone's reputation besides suing the customer? It is totally unfair and biased system, it is only based on paying members. In my 20 years working never had issues with anyone and I do not advertise, just word of mouth keeps me busy because I take care of my customers.

I have been trying to find a roofer, thinking AngiesList.com would be an unbiased source to weed out the good from the bad. AngiesList itself has become the biggest source of bias on their website. After an internet search, I found a company and I thought I'd see its ratings and reviews on AngiesList. While the company is on AngiesList, it has not received any reviews for some 4 years. What was more disturbing is the header that was placed on the company page: "In an ongoing effort to provide members with the best experience with our service, AngiesList has set specific criteria that need to be met in order to be included in general searches. This provider does not meet, or has not yet met, some or any of AngiesList's criteria; therefore the provider is being withheld from category and keyword searches." It is at AngiesList discretion to update or remove this message and exclusion.
This greatly concerned me. What on earth did this company do? I felt this company was a very good prospect. After my List of good prospects dwindled, I searched for how this could happen to a company on AngiesList. What I discovered was eye opening. NBC Chicago did a story that not only proved contractors lied about their required licensing and still became AngiesList certified, but it also revealed that if a company comes into a dispute with AngiesList, that company will receive the same heading quoted above, effectively blacklisting the company and further damaging the company.
A licensed company complained to AngiesList about the money spent advertising and the loss of customers because of the numerous companies who lied about being licensed and provided the same services at unrealistic low prices. This company now is in dispute with AngiesList and AngiesList has put the header quoted above on his webpage. Well, I contacted the roofing company I am interested in and asked them about their experience with AngiesList that led them to being essentially blacklisted. They said they just stopped advertising with them and do not know about being blacklisted. This also demonstrates that AngiesList is not neutral or even honest.

I am a contractor in Michigan and contacted Angie's List to try to get more leads, after speaking to one of their representatives a few times I decided that it wasn't the right choice for my company because they wanted me to sign a year contract with them. I let them know that the contract was my issue and that I wasn't interested unless I could get into a shorter term contract. They kindly let me know that was my only option.
Lo and behold I got a follow up call about 2 weeks later asking if I was still interested in setting advertising up with them, I let them know-again - my issues with the contract and I got the "well why didn't you say something?" From there the lady let me know she could do 6 months and it would be the same price as the 1 year contract as well. I agreed and asked them to call me at a more convenient time. Once I got the call back - it was the lady I originally spoke with that told me they don't any contracts that are less than a year- she started reading me the contract conditions. Included in this was obviously the price I would be spending each month aaannddd it went up almost 50%... Mind you I was told the price would not change with the shorter contract...
I should have called it quits at that point but she was able to talk to her "manager" and get me the original price with the short term contract. I signed up, it's been nearly 3 weeks I have not gotten a single lead from them. In fact I have gotten more from a free craigslist ad. I was told when I first started talking to them that they had had "400 inquiries" in my area in my line of work "this month and only 4 contractors". I called today to speak with their "customer success team" and their best advice was to get a bigger advertising area a.k.a. Pay them more money, I declined and asked them to just change my coupon, then got on my profile to check and the changes were incorrect and did not make sense. The only useful tool I have gotten from Angie's List is the ability to let my customers review me publicly and that part is free! I advise spending your marketing money elsewhere.

I called them and they said they won't issue a refund because I didn't cancel on time. My account was set to not renew. Apparently, all accounts were changed to auto renewal within this past year.
The person from Angie's List said: "I apologize if the auto renewal caught you off guard. By default, when you sign up for a membership online, the membership renews automatically. We started automatic renewal for the convenience of our members, based on their feedback, so they wouldn't need to contact us every time they wanted their account to continue."

I recently canceled my contract two months shy of renewal. When I initially signed up to pay Angie's List their high monthly fee, it was with the intent that I could gain a some a few new customers and that it would be a win, win situation. They stated clearly that with this monthly fee that they would list my company at the top of their list as well as let me offer coupons that were completely in my control. To understand clearly, they said that I was on a contract and would have control. They changed this rule 2/3 of the way through the agreement and they wouldn't let me post the sales that were complimentary to my business. They instead have become more like a company that sends large blasts of spam out for the business' that pay however, they take their monthly payment and a large portion of the payment of the services that were rendered and purchased from their site.
I could see Angie's List having the potential to throw a few good companies under the bus. My company is a highly rated company across the board, even on Angie's List, however, recently their review practice has changed. They now let any biased individual who has never done business with a business listed on Angie's List makes a complaint or a merely state their opinion. It could be your rival, it could be a disgruntled employee, it could be an honest person. Once your business is in Angie's Lists hands, you are subjecting your hard work and business to good people and predators alike. And, the most unfortunate thing about Angie's List is that they sit back, push a button to send mass emails and then collect thousands of dollars off of the sweat and hard work of all the national business' who fallen into this internet pit.
It's also unfortunate that when you go to Angie's List, you are sometimes getting uneducated, opinionated comments, (not actual reviews) and with this, ever so judging country we have become, those who are simply having a bad day could easily put someone out of business. I highly recommend that if you own a business, NEVER pay Angie's List for a listing. There are unscrupulous people out there who cannot tell the difference between writing an actual review of services rendered versus sharing their biased and unfactual opinion. They need to change their name so that it will closely represent their company. It should be called, Angie's List Opinions, and comments from strangers who have never done business with the listed business at all.

After the provider ignored 4 emails, I contacted Angie's List and asked for a full refund. Now, I have to wait another week to get that refund. Client did not order or refused the common practice of obtaining a WDO/termite inspection prior to closing on his property. 5 months later he tries to black mail me - stating I should have reported termite damage which 1) I was performing a basic home inspection, not a termite inspection, 2) termite inspections are only performed by a licensed pest control operator, client was aware of this at the time of inspection, 3) he submits photos on the Angie's List review board, which I can't counter with my own photos at time of inspection.
Any termite professional knows that they even check off all areas of attic are not visible and typically after 30 days. I have been an Angie's List member for years. A couple of years ago, I had tremendous problems with them when I purchased their gold membership which was supposed to come with a rebate on the purchase and use of one of their deals. I ended up calling at least 10 times about the rebate and emailing proof several times and it took many many months and way too much effort and follow up to actually get the deal. I was told that was a one time issue with them but from talking with others about Angie's List, it seems to be standard operating procedure. I don't know if they figure by making it so difficult to obtain and making it take so long, maybe the customer would just give up and they could keep all of the funds that were promised. It seems short sighted though because Angie's List also had to pay their employees for all of that time on the phone.
A couple of years ago, I hired a contractor who did a great job. I reviewed his company on Angie's List and hired him for several more jobs. (The contractor pays attention to detail, provides high quality work and a reasonable price. That is tough to find). He told me recently about a problem he was having with Angie's List charging him for advertising without his consent (it was a LOT IMO for his receiving basically nothing) and giving him the run around when he tried to call about it.
I am an attorney so I decided to help him with the issue. Within a couple of days, Angie's List removed my positive review of his company and claimed that there is a conflict of interest. It is not a big deal to either the contractor or myself but I think this shows what kind of company they are. Very spoil sport. How would they search me, as his attorney, and decide to have an issue about the review!?
Someone spent quite a bit of time on that and I wish they would have spent the time taking care of my contractor's issue instead. They don't care that I am representing a client well more than a year after I reviewed him. It seems to me that they are out to punish him any way they can for complaining. Now, if only their "investigation" into their charging him for advertising not provided as agreed would only move as quickly we would not be in this situation. They take MONTHS to review a matter. It also seems that employee turn over is so high, as soon as one "account manager" reviews the matter and is prepared to discuss it, he either quits or is fired and a new "account manager" says he knows nothing about what the last one did.

I brought this to the attention of the AL representative and he told me he did not see this review and that we have an "A" rating. I disagreed with him and told him that from the contractor site it shows a "B" rating and from a consumer site it shows a "C" rating. He still disagreed and I just checked again today, both still show the review and the same grades of B and C. Then I wrote one bad review out of a half dozen good ones and what happens? They call him to verify business and he somehow made them not post it!!! I called and over a few months of "Sorry, we are trying to update the manner in which we post."
They finally posted it with a "Warning" at the bottom that this contractor refuses to be on Angie's List and such action is suspect. HOWEVER, they made it so that you could not find his business on a normal search of contractors in the area. You would have to spell out the full name of the business (including LLC, PA, Inc., etc.) or it would never come up. AND a grade did not show at all making you think there were no reviews unless you actually then clicked on it!! You had to go through all those steps to find the hidden review.
I called for another month to see if they could fix that and they always said, "Sir, I see the review." Then I would make them go through the process of a consumer like me to search and they would say, "Oh, I see, sorry we are updating the way we will post reviews soon." For the last 8-12 months we were struggling with them to fix our incorrect grade of a B when it was suppose to be an A, let's all face it. If you are a B rated anything on any online platform, you might as well not be there at all. They admitted to the grade being incorrect in multiple areas of their website, for many months, due to a website platform change.
I had explained to them that "you are portraying my company as a B rated company when it is an A, and I am losing a lot of money because of it" and I refused to pay my advertising money to them until they fixed the issue. To this day they haven't fixed it, and they have put a disclaimer on my account saying that my company does not portray what an Angie's List company requires to be on AL therefore we can no longer advertise with them unless we pay. I was even willing to partial pay for those last 4 months in contract for the incorrect grade, but they left me with no choice but to sue them. Angie's List is not a reputable guide to "the best" and highest rated business services. We are so confused as to why these ratings are "great" when 2 out of the 3 businesses we hired were not what their ratings showed. A painting contractor had rave reviews but he reeked of alcohol the day he started the job, he sent different painters everyday, no one seemed to know what the other was doing. Another guy we hired to pressure-wash our house did a horrible job and didn't complete what was agreed to. He asked us to give him a good review because he needed the work. He mostly wanted to sit around and talk more than work. We completely lost faith in Angie's List and stopped using their recommendations.

Angies allows fraudulent reviews & does not verify consumer posts. No doubt, Angies will be out of business soon enough!! They collect money from contractors and boost contractor ratings based on a "Pay-to-Play" method. When we paid to advertise, they screened reviews by clients about us to ensure accuracy. When we got only a few leads which were worthless, we stopped advertising. Then Angies stopped ensuring reviews about us were fair... they allowed fraudulent reviews to be posted about our business. Not fair! Not right! Cannot wait to watch Angies go bankrupt!

After purchasing a lawn care deal that I received an email on from Angie's List, I waited two weeks to be contacted by the lawn service. I then called the owner and he informs me he no longer deals with Angie's List due to the 40% service fee they charge. While I don't blame the owner for not wanting to pay a fee, I feel they should have at least contacted me. And as for Angie's List, they charged my credit card for the $99.00, so I guess now I have to get my money back from them. I will NEVER do business with Angie's List again. I no longer give second chances! I should have known better.

In August of 2013 through Angie's List I obtained a contractor to power wash my deck & replace and/or screw in all the screws. I paid Angie's List immediately, their contractor called and set up a date. They showed up on the date and power wash my deck. It was raining, they said due to the weather they will return to finish the job at a later date. It has been over three years, I contact Angie's List every year to complain that the job was never finished. Every year Angie's List replies that since their contractor started the work, I must give them the opportunity to finish.
Over the past two years I've asked them how long must I wait for them to finish before Angie's List will honor a refund? According to Angie's List, apparently this is open-ended and have until I either sell my house or die to finish the work. Angie's List obviously took my money and ran. They want nothing to do with time-consuming complaints indoor fixing any wrongdoing. For this I am for anyone not to use Angie's List for any work, and or services.

I first joined Angie's List about 5 months ago. As a new HVAC (air conditioning) company I wanted to get across to the sales rep. I have a good client base, but I would like an advertising company that could increase my service calls by 3 to 5 calls a week. Since I only have 2 workers I couldn't handle the volume. The rep then said 3 to 5 calls wouldn't be a problem at all in such a busy service area. It's been 5 months without a single call. I asked my account manager how the sales rep fraudulently led me to believe a paid advertising contract would give my company more calls, but still no feedback.

We needed home services. I signed on with Angie's List. As I always do, I then checked a well-reviewed company with the licensing board in our state. The company's license had been cancelled. There were a number of serious issues, including substandard work and some involving money. I brought this to Angie's List's attention. Nothing happened. We subsequently received several Angie's List "special offers" for this company's services. I contacted Angie's List again; again, nothing changed. Then I wrote an Angie's List review of the company, giving it an "F" rating for this reason. I submitted the review twice. It never appeared.
After a few more identical "special offers" from the company, I contacted Angie's List by chat. The agent told me that the company's owner had told them that he now had a valid license. I checked it with the state licensing board. Both companies are owned by the same individual with the same contact information. However, the company's names (and license numbers) are totally different. The owner may want to continue to use the old name simply for its "good reviews" or because it would cost him to advertise under the new name. However, to me this is deceptive and perhaps illegal. However, I have not been personally harmed by this company, so I am limiting my "complaint" to spreading my experience via this forum.

I am the owner of a small business, Greater Mass Home Improvement, LLC; I would like to share with you my frustration with the popular marketing company Angie's List. I am extremely disappointed with Angie's List, instead helping me to grow my business, this company is putting me out of business. August 2016 I checked out the Angie's List website. I reached out to them to find out how to advertise my business. I spoke with a sales representative and a client success manager several times on how they would market my business, but it wasn't until several calls later did I learn the actual cost. I was reluctant; the sales representative was persistent, even the client success manager joined back in on the conversations. After much back and forth banter the Angie's List sales representative convinced me that there was plenty of work and very little risk involved, assuring me there is more work than contractors.
They topped it off assuring me a client success manager would work with me. The cost was steep but per both the sales representative and the client success manager this amount would easily be returned to me plus more. So, I signed up for two categories of advertisements at $1,500 per month a whopping $18,000 for 1 year. Since signing up, I feel Angie's List has not lived up to their end of this bargain. To date, I've had several customer calls, emails and text to which I respond immediately, then quickly follow-up with project assessment visits and estimates. But disappointingly, I've only secured four customer contracts amounting to $7600 minus materials.
After struggling to pay three month, I reached out to my client success manager. She explains how she can help by connecting me with a special advertising group within Angie's List. They call it Big Deals. This special marketing tool will send out deal offers in behalf of my company (with deadlines) at a reduced rate, to entice any client to purchase a great deal, securing you a job. The kicker is, once the deal is locked in with the client, your company pays them a percentage of what you make on each job through the Big Deal offer. It's a double payout for Angie's List at the expense of my company. I was stunned by this. I voiced my frustration with the offer and their business practices in writing (email) but got no response by email or phone.

Updated on 07/16/2022: Please read my first review so this will make sense. Since my last critic, I had negotiated an annual advertising cost and agreed to a monthly auto-pay. 75-90% of the leads do not materialize too much but the one or two that pan out are very good clients that are serious about hiring a good designer. I'm still sad it became business/leads driven instead of the consumer only because there will now always be potential for dishonesty whereas when the consumer paid to get the truth, that's what they got.
No business could rate themselves, send in fake reviews or pay for better positioning, more leads, prequalified leads or all the other tricks these referral services hand out to the public! I believe they teamed up with HomeAdvisor which makes them a very mixed bag. They do stand behind their referred companies and that is comforting to the consumer and hopefully keeps the riff raff companies away from the clients!
Original: This is so sad. When I began with Angie's back in 2007. I didn't even know what it was all about. A client had given me a "review" on tile flooring. I am an Interior Designer. I can't remembered when but I think it was 2010 I decided to get curious about their platform. I started seeing commercials and I thought the fact that the business wasn't paying for placement and phony reviews because it was strictly driven by consumers was the best part of all! Honesty is so hard to come by. My first year with them was amazing. I received lots of traffic and I ended up setting up a "Big Deal". I gave the client 2 hours of consultation and it would lead to getting a project. It ended up be a 75/25 mix. Clients were more interested in getting as much out of me for the $99 than actually needing me to do the project.
Angie's kept all the money. Then they approached me for annual advertising and a better "placement" and more exposure in several area of surrounding Los Angeles areas. I advertised but I didn't really think it got me much more than nothing did. I was very skeptical and didn't want to sign up in 2014 but the sales pitch was great! Now Angie's is going to the FREE clients with Snapfix!! all the client need do is take a photo, submit it to Angie's and they would match them with my service!! $2000 later and not much traffic, low and behold... Snapfix is replaced with Lead Feed and I must pay for every "job fit" they give me. I had just signed up with HomeAdvisor, realized in 3 days what a scam that was, got out of Homeadvisor quick and hit the ceiling with Angie's!
They promised me all kinds of help instead but then here came a renewal again! Business had gotten good again, I had the money, they gave me another county and I was remembering the good ol days when she was doing her business for all the right reasons! Now I gotten even less. One of the come-ons was that if you were a paid advertiser, you come run ads to members for a discounted percentage. The first percentage was 3% of the advertised deal would be kept by Angie's. Then it went to 5% on Labor, 10% on Product and 15% for Consulting or Planning of a project. I found out today that it is now 25%-50% for the consulting!!! Absolutely insane!!! I guess it's time to bolt, such a shame that greed got the better of this company...

Was talked into using Angie's List to promote our landscaping and house cleaning services. They ended up charging us $122/mo. We got a few small orders, which they take a commission on. Basically we lost big time trying to work with them. You cannot complain or reach anyone to discuss your account, other than a salesman. No one in management will talk to you, and you can't get a name. It appears that they have oversold their services, meaning they have too many vendors as opposed to members looking for service. So maybe a few vendors are getting orders from Angie's List, but most are being over charged and receiving few if any orders. Plus it is aggravating to only be allowed to speak with salesmen who have the same tired old line, "you need more reviews", "try a Big Deal". THIS IS A COMPANY TO AVOID IF YOU WANT TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS.

If you own a business who is hounded by Angie's List every other day to pay for advertising and choose not to do so, your company will still be a part of her local list, but the reviews disappear or only some show up. Most consumers would rather do business with a company that had many positive reviews. Angie's List takes that right away from you because of their greed. Also, I was on autopay membership. The credit card on file had expired in July of 2016. Instead of contacting me to update, like every other business does, they find a way around the proper way to do business. Lo and behold, in December, I get a notice from Angie's List that they renewed my yearly membership with a credit card that I had never given them, nor did they have authorization to use.
I investigated thoroughly to find out how they were able to do this and found out that 5 years ago, I had a one time membership (via a Groupon) to Angie's List that was paid through PayPal (with another credit card). AL contacted PayPal and had them put through the charge on an account from 2012. I demanded that they credit my account and they did so, but buyer beware. They are sneaky and deceptive and now that there's HomeAdvisor, no one has to pay to keep Angie living the good life.

AngiesList is frustrating as heck. They had technical issues with their website, that literally took over a year to resolve. Reviews on my business had random coding text. When a reviewer searches for a specific business type, they present a list of business in no helpful order that is relevant to the searcher. My business information was dated and listed that I offer services that I had not offered for months. I contacted Angie's multiple times by email, and phone, to state that we no longer offer such services and it took over eighteen months for them to edit our business information. All the while, we received requests for services we do not offer. If you need to edit your business services on Yelp or Google, you can do it in three minutes... and those are free review sites.

Then one day I got a letter from them stating I had to fill out these forms and sign and return them or they would put my company in their monthly mailing and put us on their site listed as their Penalty Box. I was told I could dispute it but it would not be taken down. I have threatened them with a lawsuit if they tarnish my company name. The customer gave us a time period of 3 days to reinstall a chimney cap that was installed over a year ago and blew off in the wind. These people care nothing about their product or their profit and lie and say whatever they want, to money from you at all costs. In August, I called Angie's List about doing some marketing. The sales rep told me that the cost was $398, for the year. I thought that might not get me much, maybe move my company up a few spots, maybe bottom of first page, I thought, and I'd be happy with that. We don't need too many new lead, we are mostly referral based. So the rep walked me through the application. Never once did she mention a contract or that this actually $4000! I honestly didn't see that in there either. I trusted that she would tell me that would be the case. I've worked in sales before. You could get fired from the companies I worked at if you did not tell the customer the actual price.
A few weeks later an Advertising rep called me, asked how it was going. I said no one has called me. I am thinking to myself, its because I didn't pay very much. He says okay and thats the end of that. About a month later he calls me again, asking how its going. I tell him no leads. He says okay, and thats the end. 3 months go by, I had paid this on a credit card, which I don't use really, just trying to pay it off, for Christmas, so I don't check the statements too often. It was time to reconcile this credit card, and its completely maxed out! See all the charges from Angie's List, so I call them and tell them I was not aware this was a monthly charge and to cancel my account.
They agree to cancel my account. The very next day they charge my card is charged AGAIN. So I call back, they won't tell me anything, then my "advertising specialist" calls me and tells me I signed up for this $4000 plan! It took me about 20 minutes to find the contract area where it says I'm signing up for $4000 in marketing, very bottom, not even one of the esign pages, total deception by confusion. I would log onto my angie's list account every now and then and there is a section that says "statements". I thought that it was odd that my payment was never on there, because I wanted to enter the first payment into my books and I never received any kind of confirmation number. I am wondering if that is part of the scam too, since most of the places I have complained to asked for an order number, which I cannot provide, places won't be able to find my order.
I am livid. I tell him I want to cancel. He says that is going to be another $1000 to cancel. I don't mind paying for advertising, we give google a lot of money, because I gain good leads from them and lots. I ask him "where is the value in what I'm paying for? No one calls me from this site EVER". He said in the last 3 month I have received 4 calls, 2 being the same number. So I search my records, yes we did do one job. The job was $100, for cable install, which we do but not something we advertise or specialize in. So I paid $1200 to make $100. The leads are garbage. Once someone messaged me, about a little small job and then totally flaked last minute, leaving me to scramble to find something for our employees to do, which cost me way more.
The reason I am writing this is because they say they hire honest contractors, thats one of their advertisements, I contracted them to do marketing for me and they failed to deliver. Another thing they say is that if you aren't happy with your contractor you don't have to pay. Well, I'm not satisfied in being mislead and false promises and they are charging me $4000 anyway. They say they have even more leads and better ones. Total lie! This company should be sued. They took not only from my company, but my family, they maxed the card I was going to buy my kids Christmas presents with. I have also noticed lots of complaints and am wondering if anyone has tried to sue them over false claims of quality leads and being mislead? Thank you taking the time to read this.

We arranged to get my 4 hours of handyman work done the next week. Next week came, no service. I called a few more times, Carlos answered again. He said his van had broken down, and he was in a loaner now and would come out in 3 days. 4 days later, I was calling again... this time, he had been sick. Asked if he could come the following week? I said "OK, I really wasn't in a hurry, just wanted the work done." The next week, Hurricane Matthew showed up. Nothing to be done about that. I called and called after the storm, and it took over a week to get an answer. He said he was swamped and couldn't get to his calendar right now.
So, here's the problem. I did everything I could do to get this service performed. I was patient, and understanding of the vendor's stated problems. But when I called Angie's List, the rep (Matthew) was rude, indifferent, and quickly told me I was outside the 30-day refund option. How's that? I scheduled the service 4 times and spoke to this fellow at least 6 times during the past 8 weeks. This person should never be answering a customer service line, I don't need attitude after being taken advantage of! I've been a member for a long time. At the time of writing this review, I have been advertising with Angie's list for almost 4 years. For nearly the entire 4 years, they were my sole source of revenue, and it worked out great. I was making thousands of dollars a month (Which was great because I lost my day job during this time) and I was expanding my business. Christmas of 2014 was my best season to date... grossed $20,000 in less than a month. Things were looking great.
Fast forward to October of 2015, when I decided to move out of state with my wife to try and take advantage of a lower cost of living... then it all went downhill. I went through something like 5 account reps in 18 months, 4 of them really in about 3 months... no one knew my situation, my business tanked (That's what I get for actually expecting the company to do what I am paying them to do). I hemorrhaged money.
We decided to move back to our original location in February of 2016. Fine. We move back, things slowly start to pick up. I call to setup the same situation that led to my greatest success to date with them, Christmas of 2014. I quickly got my feelings hurt. Apparently, the $300 a month I am paying for advertising isn't enough, and now the deal that I was paying 16% on now requires 40% of my earnings to go to them. On top of that, apparently the quality of the providers is questionable at best as now you have guys who are doing what I do (Low Voltage, TV Mountings, etc) for $99, minus 40% to Angie's list, minus $20 or so for a mount...$40 for a job. I can't leave my house for that.
I also came to find out that they would negotiate the rate with me, but that their "Scheduler" (News to me) will choose what the best deal is to the members as well as where they make the most money, and that it is likely I wouldn't get much revenue from it. They started off great, phenomenal even, but they have their hands in too many pots now and it's making it difficult to do business with them. My revenues in this line of work are down across the board (I started a 2nd business which luckily for me is doing reasonably well because I was sitting around too much, thanks/no thanks to Angie's List) and I am honestly thinking this might be the final year I advertise with them.
We shall see, but they need to get their stuff together, figure out how to take care of the contractors as well as the members, because we pay a whole lot more than the members do. I read someone questioned if the reviews were real... every single review on my page is someone I have worked with, if that helps. Used to love Angie's... now I'm looking for a way out.

As a small construction business owner who made the mistake of advertising with Angie's List I will warn you to say far away and save your money. After relentless daily calls and emails from Angie's List for months I unfortunately answered the phone one day and was connected to one of the advertising representatives who made Angie's List sound like the best thing since the invention of the wheel. They promised my company growth and front page visibility. Since I was trying to grow my business from a single person LLC I was reluctant to spend the $130 a month in advertising costs because as a small business there isn't a lot of funds available. I decided, pretty much not allowed to hang up until I said yes. Guerrilla marketing!
The representative promised my company revolving front page visibility, all I needed was 5 reviews. I had a couple already and she said if I sent her a contact list, Angie's List would send review requests to all my past clients. I sent her the list the next day. A few days later my account manager for my account called to go over my account and made all the same promises. So, I waited a month, nothing. Waited two months, no business. I again spoke with my account manager and he again mentioned the 5 reviews. I brought it to his attention I sent in a list of clients and Angie's List would reach out to them. This was a lie. They will not reach out to your clients as they say they will.
As far as progress growth, I received zero visits to my company website, no project leads, and no request for estimates. They kept none of their promises except the one in charging me $130 a month in advertising fees. I'm not sure how other contractors work but, if a client of mine signs a contract they expect to get what was promised to them. If parts of the contract are not completed the customer would have their money returned for that portion of the contract. Angie's List will take your money and when they don't provide what was promised in the deal, they will then bill you for additional money to get out of your contract. Signing the contract was the biggest mistake I made. Don't make the same mistake. After 8 months of $130 a month I received zero, yes, zero traffic from Angie's List, zero referrals, and zero requests for estimates. After 5 years, I cannot keep the doors open and will be forced to close my business. Thanks Angie's List!

If people have an issue with the work that we did they contact us and then we fix it. It is simple. I don't believe that people that haven't done business with you can just leave reviews online which isn't fair or good business for anyone. I have been with Angie's List for over 7 years and for the last year it got worse. They upgraded their Business Center which caused a lot of issues for us to keep track of our clients' purchases through BigDeals and/or other deals purchased. We couldn't access this all year, and/or log in to see who is who.
When I called or emailed my account manager I was given runaround answers. They told me that anyone that would leave a bad review online that we didn't do business with would be removed. This isn't the case. There are two reviews online that are an "F" rating and they will not remove it as supposedly they had an interaction with us. I am spending $150 a month in advertising which I haven't received any clients from. I track everything using Salesforce and can see where people find me since they have to specify this in the form. I am very disappointed with everything with Angie's List as anyone can leave a review for anyone without having any repercussions.
I will not be advertising with them once my contract is up. I am going to limit my promotions within as most clients that purchase the deals are cheap and don't want to pay full price. They are the biggest pain to deal with and want something for nothing. Then they threaten to leave you a bad review if you don't comply with their demands. Some say they are happy after you do the work and then leave a bad review or a less than A review. People we haven't done business with (work on the property) leave reviews on here and get away with it. Angie's List will not fix this issue and make up excuses to why they feel they don't want to remove the reviews.

After several months of talking to Jordan ** over the phone and emailing back and forth, I have came to the conclusion that Angie's List (Jordan **) just tells you enough information and makes promises to GET more money out of you. I am will be asking the AG office here in Ohio to start an investigation into this company and will be filling a depute with my bank. They defrauded the wrong person. I joined Angie's List about 5 years ago and it has been nothing but trouble this whole time. In the beginning it was okay, I wasn't making a lot of money off of the site but the fact that my business was being promoted I was okay with it. In the past year, I keep getting switched between the account managers and as soon as I build a relationship, I keep getting switched. I was promised a marquee placement spot in the magazine which lead me to gain their trust but when I was ready to get put in the magazine, they told me I needed 75 more reviews, along with a payment that wouldn't secure my placement in the magazine. My original manager, Kenneth **, started to gain a mocking tone when I talked to him when I told him I didn't want gutter deals anymore because the gutter deals aren't worth it, I want to do roofs.
When I tried to relay my feelings to both Kenneth and the following managers, I was always promised different things just to be told by the next manager that those things were never in reach. Angie's List started as a neighbor friendly company that would help everyday people find the work they needed done, now it seems to be a money hungry business that only cares about the size of your wallet and not the quality of your work. Now they threatened to take me off saying I owe $1700 even though I paid a payment a week ago or they will take me off of the site. After the constant arguing and the mocking tone from all the managers, I can't trust anyone from there, nor do I want to at this point in time. I have been betrayed by this company for the last time.

My recent experience is that if you looking for a company to sell you lies this is it! Run! Do homework on them. Look deeply before you get set up. The company in a whole is a joke. Only doing service with them for one month I learned very fast is that they take money not help you build. My experience in one month is enough and still with sending and explaining the same thing in emails and phone calls they still don't get no. They tried selling me as if I would change my mind. They even said how about a couple of free months. And today I get a customer from them for a service I did not consent. The nerve of this company is just sad. If you notice they have nothing really to allow reviews SIGN 1! Best bet is to change banks and do it fast before they keep charging you. Zero stars is what I would give them hands down period point blank. BEWARE if you care about the money you make to a company that can care less.

I put my company on Angie's List hoping to gain new clientele. I quickly noticed that if you didn't pay them you would be seen by hardly anyone so I called to see about getting more exposure. I am a brand new business just starting out and when they told me the cost I told them I needed some time as I didn't have that kind of money for advertising on their site right now. They called two more times while I was working and I didn't call back. Today I got a very RUDE voicemail about how they were going to flag my account as I don't care enough about my business to advertise with them. They can't waste anymore time on someone like me who isn't even serious about my company and they are moving on.
There were some other things said, but you get the idea!!! Who does that?? I would NEVER advertise with them now and have even stopped using them personally...I am telling everyone I know not to use them as all they really care about is MONEY, so much so that they don't even care how bad their customer service is!!! The saddest part of all is I probably would have advertised with them when I could afford it if they had been normal human beings.

I have been a business owner and I have been reviewed by Angie's List members since 2008. I have to say that I have acquired very good clients and I have A ratings with AL. It is my understanding that members of AL pay to get reputable reviews and the ability to find good contractors to service them, it has never been that Business owners pay to be on AL.
Throughout my years with the list, I decided in a couple occasions to pay for "advertisement", the first time I had a couple of new clients but nothing that made me want to pursue advertising again. The second time I signed up, they gave me numbers as to how many members we have in my area, how many are looking for my services, how many have searched for my line of business, they were full of promises. I signed up for 12 months $69 monthly, I have received absolutely no results. I called them a couple of months ago and I told them I was disappointed, they said non-advertisers are going to the bottom of the list and advertisers such as myself will stay on top of the list, it has been 2 months "nothing, zip, nada".
They called me today to let me know my campaign is about to expire, I told them I wasn't interested in wasting my money because I have paid close to $720 and I have not gotten any new clients. They said this new tier they are working on is going to work great for me, I told them I had heard that before and I was not happy with the results. They told me they could work around my budget and I told them I didn't mind paying $200 a month if I was getting something in return, but I wasn't willing to pay $10 for nothing. I told them I have given them 2 chances and that I was extremely disappointed and that I wanted to search for other marketing tools with other companies, they said they will follow up with me in a couple of weeks to see if I had changed my mind.
I have over 60 "A" reviews, if members are unable to find me then I am sorry but I won't spend another dollar on Angie's List. There are other avenues and I wanted to advertise to make myself more noticeable, but not to monopolize the list. Good luck to the members, as for me and other business owners, I think we will get our ball rolling outside the list.

Angie’s List sold out… My business has been in operation for over 22 years. When AL first initially offered marketing sales I paid for a years’ worth of ads with absolutely no results. My business has an impeccable reputation in our local community. Prior to advertising, I had almost 20 ratings with AL and everyone of them were an A. Since then AL calls 5 to 6 times per year soliciting for my business again. Every time they call I tell them that I advertised previously and received no results. About a month ago they tried again telling me their platform has changed and they are going free to consumers. Basically if I don’t “Pay to Play” they will remove my business listing or put me at the bottom of the list even though I have a great reputation and have been in business for over 20 years.
I then went ahead and registered as a new customer just to see if my business was still up. Lo and behold I was nowhere to be found. They pulled my business A listing down with no information or reviews on my profile. Lately I have been reading customers reviews and the quality of the referrals have been terrible. Now I know why… Reputable nonpaying businesses don’t have a chance unless you pony up. The non-reputable business that pay get pushed to the top of the list. Truly unethical! That would be ok if they stayed with their original platform listing the top rated business in the communities that individual consumers were looking for legitimate ratings. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. You will no longer be able to find the best of the best on Angie’s List. Good Luck! You are going to need it!

Angie's List business model changes have turned a homeowner network of neighbors helping neighbors into a contractor pay-to-play business. When searching for a contractor, I noticed that the only listings that showed reviews or descriptions were the businesses that paid for placement. Those that didn't pay are relegated to the "poor mans" area without any description or review number. I am disappointed with the changes and now need to find a new service to help find reputable contractors that has at least an ounce of legitimacy. Shame on you Angie for letting this happen. Your company has come full circle by taking us back to the era before Angie's List - which was the original reason for starting the list in the first place.

The painter didn't have the insurance. I was provided w/ auto insurance which is completely useless if someone is doing the work. I decided to sign up for the "free service" element of Angie's List to check reviews and see if the service was beneficial. I was never a paying member and glad I never took that step. I was looking for an asphalt contractor to replace our aging driveway. What I got when trying to read reviews was interesting. A contractor, listed favorably on other free sites, but, listed in their database could not be reviewed. It kept pushing me to 3 contractors that were rated A by their service. My research had identified that the 3 listed had some issues (via other sites) and I was frustrated not being able to review the contractor that had provided a quote.
When I spoke to the contractor about checking reviews, he told me he stopped being a "paying" member to Angie's due to excessive fees. In my opinion, it supports that Angie's will push paying contractors to the top of the list, and nonpaying or limited payees are pushed to the back of the list. This action by the site totally defeats the purpose of intent for consumers to find the "best" rated or more favorable contractors for a service. I use other free, unbiased sites like BBB, Yelp, etc to find feedback and could learn much more about a contractor than I could attempting to use Angie's List.
Another point that bothered me, was the start of emails that if I upgraded my service to "pay" level, I would have more benefits and information available to me. Obviously, that was not going to happen. I have tried to "unsubscribe" to the service, and it ignores my request. I was receiving numerous emails per week regarding service discounts, programs, etc. to the point of being annoying as spam. My option for now was to "block" their address and dump into spam and delete as received. When asked, I let people know in my network, even "free" is not a benefit and avoid this service. It has no current value to consumers looking for honest and fair service providers. I decided to make a post here to also help folks, with understanding from my limited experience with them, how it works, or doesn't, in this case.

As a business, we get multiple calls per month to advertise with Angie's in order to put our business in the spotlight. We do not advertise our business on Angie's List. 3 top complaints: We received a negative review. I researched all the information provided in the review, I could not find the customer or address in our database. I'm not sure if someone accidentally posted to the wrong company or if someone was deliberately posting a false review. When I called A.L. to discuss, they said if they cannot reach the reviewer, they cannot remove the review. Eventually it was removed;
I saw a review that did not make sense. I spoke to our customer who wrote the review and she said A.L. contacted her and said to stay at a lower subscription price, she was required to make a certain number of reviews. So she quickly posted reviews to meet her requirements; Most recently, we received a call saying effective August 1, 2016, that our company will have minimal visibility. This is because we do not advertise with Angie's List.
The beginning purpose of the company was homeowner based, driven by homeowners that paid a fee to write a review for the sake of other homeowners. Then it was about which businesses paid for more exposure. Now, to make things even worse, non subscriber "homeowner" users can comment which opens A.L. to abuse of the ratings system by an unlimited number of false reviews.

Caliber Constructions initial visit to my home was on 6/2/16, when Caliber's sales representative Tim ** came to assess home repairs and provide me a quote for indoor/outdoor projects. During that visit Tim ** inspected my roof and informed me that he could immediately see I had severe hail damage. Tim ** assessed the damages and quoted me $12,505 for all repairs. Tim then told me I needed to call my insurance agent and advise them I had severe hail damage. I did so trusting in Caliber's expertise to identify hail damage.
I scheduled the appointment with State Farms claim agent and per Tim's request invited him to attend. During the inspection Tim surprisingly did not go onto the roof with the State Farm agents. After State Farm inspected the roof, they gave Tim and I their analysis, informing us they found minimal hail damage, contrary to Tim's severe hail damage analysis. Surprisingly again, Tim did not have any comments or rebuttal to the State Farm agent findings. I was extremely shocked and horrified that I had filed a claim that resulted in findings contrary to those assessed by Caliber Construction.
Soon-after on 6/22 I was provided with an estimate by State Farm of $2600.00. I contacted Tim on 6/22 and discussed their analysis with Tim who responded by saying the amounts allotted for the work required, were too low and he would provide me a counter to their quote. Weeks went by with no response from Tim.
Due to the lack of response from Tim in June & July, my State Farm claim was closed on 7/18/16 so I reached out to the Caliber office and complained, soon after Tim called and advised that he did not agree with their analysis of minor hail damage which was contrary to his assessed damage of severe hail damage. Tim advised I should request to have State Farm re-open my claim and request a 2nd agent. I did as Tim advised and State Farm re-opened my claim on 7/19 stating they would need an additional reason to visit the site again since during their first visit Caliber Construction Tim ** did not go onto the roof nor did Caliber/Tim rebuttal any of State Farms findings during the day of their site visit.
During all this time I had also attempted to speak to the owner of Caliber Construction Leonard Murrell. It took over a month for Leonard to finally call me in late July and at that point I told him I wanted to work directly with him. He then came to my home and assessed the roof himself, offering no apologies for his salesman Tim **. Leonard completed his analysis saying the roof did have damage and he would work directly with my insurance claim agent. I signed a letter of authorization on 7/26 & sent it to my insurance co and then provided Leonard with the claim agent's contact info. Leonard assured me he'd handle the claim from there.
On 8/4 Leonard Murrell still had not contacted my insurance agent, so I followed up with him and he reassured me again that he would be following up with my insurance claim agent... On 8/12 logged into my State Farm account and found that for the 2nd time my claim had been closed by State Farm for lack of response. I now have a claim on my insurance policy record which places me at risk of a policy increase. I've lost valuable time stressing over this matter which continues to be unresolved. I recently discovered that Tim ** has his own business, Tim ** Construction and Handy-man service and to no surprise this business has a complaint filed on the BBB and one on the Rip-Off Report. I passed this information onto Leonard but I'm doubtful it mattered to him.

To keep a long story short, Angie's List will upsell you every year when you have to reinstate your account. And not by just a couple dollars. More like 75% higher than what you paid the previous year. My recent experience is that I was sold something I didn't want and my monthly charge has gone up from $166 a month to $366 a month. Angie's List also took $800 from my credit card to charge me for a past due bill I knew nothing about. I'm sure I'm confusing anyone reading this but that is the issue. Angie's List makes it so difficult to understand their policies so they can whack you for more $$$. The agent I work with on Angie's List, Brian tries to be helpful but his hands are tied too.
Once Angie's List gets your $$$ you have zero chance of recovering it. And if they have your credit card info you will be in big trouble. Angie's List has a real bait and switch mentality when it comes to their clients. For starters, this statement they make about no business being able to pay to be recommended on Angie's List is false. Second, I hired a business to come out and give me a quote from their site. The business gave me a quote for over twice what anyone else had quoted me, and I had 4 quotes. Third, for business owners, (like myself) they really scam the business owners. They tell you that if you get good reviews and ratings, you qualify to buy advertising packages on Angie's List, as I noted. They sign you up for about a year. 3 Months or so into your advertising package you paid for, they tell you they made a mistake in how many reviews you need to qualify. Then, they keep your money, and cancel your ad package.
The worst part of that is that, in a period of months and months, I only got one party who even responded to their ads, anyway. It was a nice lady, and I definitely helped her. But, I only got back about 10% of my original ad package investment. Which makes me think that Angie's List is no longer relevant to consumers. Despite their 'free' memberships now available, consumers just don't use Angie's List. So, if there's no one out there using their service, what's the point? Their service is pretty sad, considering that they pretend to be a really clean, ethical company, but they are just scamming both consumers and business owners. They don't live up to their image. In the current world environment I do not feel safe in leaving a negative review and having my contact information sent to the person it was left about. I could understand if they gave them my zip code but giving them all my contact information is downright scary. The world is scary enough without sending someone ammunition and my contact information to seek revenge. No wonder they have such great reviews. Anyone in their right mind wouldn't leave a negative review knowing that the person it's about is going to be forwarded the review and the reviewers contact information.

I realized I was automatically re-upped and charged approximately 50 dollars when I received my credit card statement. I emailed them and was told I could send another email requesting a new renewal alert for next year that would give 30, 60 or 90 days notice. There was no offer to reimburse me for this year's membership that I do not want. The offers Angie provides via emails are ridiculous and are not useful - for example $99 for a roof inspection, when you/I can get this for free from any decent roof contractor you can find from word of mouth or Yelp.
Angie now is free to new members and you can pay for an upgraded subscription. Guess what? I joined before it was free and my annual membership is the upgraded version so I can go back to FREE. I truly hope Angie's List can be taken to task for their sketchy-scam business verbiage and practices. Their polices posted on their website are misleading. Like many others, when I signed up for Angie's List I did not see that buried in the barrage of words, ALL accounts are automatically on auto-renew. I logged in twice in a year, did not find the platform useful. I find word-of-mouth among people I know is still better. Didn't even know my account had auto-renewed. I don't think they even send an email receipt. Months later, I realize it has auto-renewed, contact Angie's List & they REFUSE to refund any of this year's membership. They fall back on "it's in the agreement". They KNOW people don't see that. CEO is from McKinsey, so they're just wanting money. And good God - how to stop getting their stupid emails pleading for me to review service providers?! No, I don't pay for something and then put in volunteer time to keep the product relevant. Super shady money grubbers. Avoid.

I signed up with AL 2 weeks ago and have had nothing but frustration since. First, it took a week for my coordinator to call me and I had to send an email prompting her to call me. Then we only had problems with the website, and I could not view my ad, the coordinator sent me a screenshot, but on the side of the screen I could see she filtered the results to make me look as if we were appearing higher on the page. That was the last straw, I felt so swindled, I let her know I want to cancel and she said there is 35% cancellation fee, NO!!! I will not be paying this or it will go to court, I never signed a contract to that, I reviewed the agreement over and over again!!!

Do not join Angie's List! They only want your membership money, and do not care about their customers beyond that. Their "HASSLE FREE" membership, is definitely not so hassle free! Once you buy a membership, you are stuck with it for a year. They have a 100% no refund policy! They offer absolutely no refund, full or partial. No matter how long you have been a member. It may only be 2 days. Doesn't matter. Maybe you have not been able to find any deals that works for you. Doesn't matter. Maybe you are just not happy with the program or exactly how it works and even if you have not purchase anything through them.
I escalated my call and requested to speak to a manager. The lady was no help. She just kept repeating that they do not ever do refunds. She did say that she made sure to cancel my renewal from happening next May. Gee... How kind! She also mentioned that they pride themselves on customer satisfaction, and she could send me some information on how to better my experience with Angie's List. So I asked that if they pride themselves on customer satisfaction, then why not have a refund policy. Like a robot, she again repeated, we do not give refunds. DO! NOT! JOIN!

Several months went by and no calls. I left 5 messages for a return call. Finally had to stop the monthly payments before I got a call and only to tell me it was my fault no business, and AL tried to sell me more advertising. They said they would do an internal investigation to find out what was promised and if promised more than I received then no early termination fee due. I got a call after the "investigation" saying no early termination fee cancellation. Go ahead and sign up with AL if you feel lucky and desperate. I'm currently having great luck with Thumbtack for a fraction of the cost.

Yelp reviews & recommendations were less biased & more helpful, so I didn't even log into Angie's list again after a couple attempts of it being unhelpful. Today I get notice that they've deducted money from my PayPal account & contacted them immediately, expecting my account could be canceled and my money would be refunded as requested. I was told they canceled my account BUT COULD NOT REFUND ME. I was never sent ANY email notification that this acct was even nearing renewal & that was definitely not an accident. We paid for a membership that allows us to check any business in the country for one fee. For months now, we have not been able to use the site, as it gives us businesses in Wisconsin and Minnesota or God knows where when we are located in Florida or Rhode Island, or California. (We have multiple residences). Over 11 calls to customer service has just resulted in wasted hours on hold, promises that the site would be fixed, and agreeing that the situation is intolerable. That upsets me the most. Someone must have told the agents to just agree with the customer to settle people down, but it makes me more and more upset.
NOW, they won't even allow me to log on to the site without agreeing to a "New Policy" without spelling out exactly what that policy will be- EXACTLY. What fool would agree to something without knowing exactly what it is. And remember, I've already paid for a membership I cannot use. THESE PEOPLE ARE NO LONGER TRUSTWORTHY. JUST AFTER THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR, AND SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN.

Very disappointed with what Angie's List has become as a result of its owners' determination to monetize it. I became aware that AL reviews are no longer what you could call disinterested when my painter, a man who was referred to me by a friend in the trades, remarked that he had paid -- a pretty stiff fee, we might add, to get himself posted near the top of AL's listings. Charging these guys to be listed in a resource that's not unlike Google as a kind of search engine (only more local) causes them to raise their prices, or else cut corners. It's not like a painter doesn't cost enough. Thank you! One could do without that particular type of artificial and unnecessary inflation.
Hate their website these days. Every time you go there, you get "special offers" shoved in your face and have to navigate a lot of nuisance before you can do a search. What comes up is, unlike the older design's offering, not very useful. Deeply, DEEPLY resent their auto-renewal policy. I might not mind if I felt what's on offer these days is worth what they're charging. But lately I haven't felt I was getting value for the cost.

This company is horrible. They nearly scammed me of nearly one hundred dollars for a service call. Any charges from this drippy company will be disputed! The customer service is rude and sarcastic, among many other negative attributes! I had to contact another plumbing company and pay prices which were expensive, but the work was completed. After this terrible experience, I would definitely NOT consider Angie's List ratings or take your chances! Good Luck! If my husband wants to continue the subscription, he can pay the fees. I would rather spend my time and money elsewhere!

We began receiving reviews which were mailed to AL. My assumption is: It is then up the staff of AL to enter these reviews. How else do they get online to be read, if they were mailed. They misspelled words so badly the sentence didn't make any sense. And to make matters worse, it even read like "he bed me." Later, I offered suggestions for how they might fix it (since they seemed clueless). Unbiased, but at least a proper sentence. After about 7-8 emails, of which most were responded to in 2-4 days, some not at all, they said they were unable to change anything. Then they sent me an email about "what to do if you receive a negative review." The review was very positive, the client loving the work he received from the doctor. They were and remain unwilling to correct their stupendously bad entry. Extremely dissatisfied.

I joined Angie's List, it said nothing of not receiving your membership dues back. I found a service that I needed but they were 55 miles away. By the time that they responded, we had someone else do the work and did not need them. The $99 we paid them, could not be collected from Myrtle Beach Gutters. They said we had to get it back through Angie's, which said they could not return it to us.
We had to find another service of any kind and use it, even if it was more, to get any satisfaction. We took this all the way to every person we could find through Angie's and always the same answer. They are continually harassing me now for a closure to the issue, and a review of Myrtle Beach Gutters who never did anything. I lost my membership money, and the money paid to MB Gutters. My renewal is due, and I have said NO. I keep sending the same answers to every review they send out to close my account for MBG. I have reached the place where I just ignore them.
Do not sign up with Angie's. They are a rip off and the companies who use them should wake up!!! I will never use another company from Angie's List again. I will find local people and not pay membership fees that will not be returned or canceled. And money to a business, that is not returned. It goes straight in Angie's pocket, hence her huge ratings. I have a home inspection company. I have an account with HomeAdvisor and made a profile with AL. I put the review links in my email signature for customers to leave reviews for me (btw I have a 5 star/A+ rating). AL contacted me and I agreed to a phone meeting. They of course start their conversation with "You are agreeing to make a decision today by taking this call". Really!? So we go through the whole spiel and when I ask if they can lower the price so I can try it out what do you know it goes from 5k a year to $200 a month.
When I ask if I can call back (I had a home inspection client call) Frederick ** said no. I tell him I will get back to him. My initial contact Jennifer ** sends me an email reiterating the "You said you would make a decision today" comment. I replied that I was hoping for less of a hard sell but I understand. He get paid commissions and I will get back to them at the end of the summer. She forwards the email to Fred and his reply to me/Jennifer... And this is direct from the email... Interesting feedback, Thanks Jennifer. Rich, Hard Sale?
During the call you voluntary (not voluntarily, learn how to spell Fred) stated you would make a decision and sign up on the call, negotiated a discount for one year, completed the background check. After providing me with a couple of reasons why you needed to delay signing up, I then asked you if you wanted to advertise or pass on AL. You voluntarily responded "yes" (yes to which question Fred). This isn't a case of a hard sale. It's a case of you not keeping your word. I have closed the service file, voided the agreement. Rich, AL is different than HomeAdvisor. We are a private referral network. In the future you would be better served simply saying "No". Best regards Fred **, Senior Solutions Consultant.
First Fred I have no intention of signing anything until I have had a chance to do me due diligence. 2nd, It's a case of me not keeping my word? You are a foolish man and horrid sales rep. 3rd. This is not how you run a business. You verbiage is as pretentious as your last name. 4th, I was trying to get off of the phone because I had a client call, so now not only do you insult me but you are costing me business. I am fairly certain that I dodged a bullet by putting you off. It's a shame because I really thought AL was different than the other services but now I see they have grown so fast because their sales people are pushy and this guy in particular is a child who threw a fit because I didn't fall for his sales B.S. and guilt trip. They have ruined it and it looks like I will have to go through what sounds like another awful experience with them of canceling my membership, which they are auto charging my credit card for now. I don't remember even giving them permission to do that, but they just did a couple months back. It's like 12 bucks and I had used it several times before, so I let it go. It's now becoming the unusable rip-off site. All I need is to find someone to install a faucet locally, not offers and lists of folks too far away. Reviews have also been made harder to read now.

After filing a complaint with the BBB, Angie's List provided a full refund.
Original Review: May 13, 2016
I joined in Jan 2016 but a month later the website location search functionality disappeared. I would get nothing but lists of business names and clicking on anyone of them could yield a business in another city or near me - no way to tell without clicking on every business individually. Called to complain - on hold for >15 minutes. Hung up and sent an email. Response to email said they were working on the issue and in the meantime I could call for assistance findings local services. Really? I can call? And be on hold for ridiculous amounts of time only to, what? Have someone read me a list?! A month later the website issue was still not fixed. Called again. On hold >12 minutes. Hung up and initiated chat where the rep cheerily informed me that I cannot cancel my current membership - I can only choose not to renew it. So I basically paid $69.99 for a year's membership that I could only use for 1 month.

Here is how it works. Somebody from Angie's List will contact you. A smooth talker will let you know that you are now eligible to advertise on AL. They tell you they will promote your business by advertising your goods and services. You will pop up on internet searches and social media sites like Facebook. They tell you a rep. will contact you to set up your "storefront". And that your business will alternate with other business for the top advertising spot. The sales rep you speak with is very confident that advertising with AL will increase sales. They also tell you it will take 2 to 3 months for your advertising to start lifting your sales. You decide to go for it. You agree to a $245 a month advertising campaign.
I am now 6 months into my campaign and have not had one single potential customer contact me from AL. No one has set up whatever a "storefront" is. My account manager tells me he has no idea how we get our ads on Facebook. And the problem is that we don't have any customer reviews for the services we provide. But my account manager has a fix for that. He sends me a link to send out to anybody with email address to write a review on our company.
Now I am questioning how authentic the hundreds of 5 star reviews our competitors have!!! If you work hard to run your business. If you want to make sound advertising decisions. When a AL rep calls you to advertise with them -- hang up and block the number. Keep the $245 a month and hire a kid to hand deliver flyers in the neighborhoods you want to target. AL could care less about you after they get your credit card number.

In general, I'm happy with Angie's List service in my own town, but they make canceling your account a nightmare. If they leave me on hold much longer, I'll have plenty of time to file the dispute with my credit card, and find other places to leave negative reviews.

Sometimes the customers don't even call you back! So we obviously cancelled our agreement because we were simply not getting anything in return for our advertising fees.
Our account rep tried to argue with us that it was our fault and we needed to be more involved. I have done nothing different over the course of 10+ years and have always updated my info and done what they asked from me. I would get greater benefit to save paying them and canvas directly myself! As a matter of fact when I ask my customers from other sources to leave a good review for me on Angie's List they send me emails that say sorry but I'm not playing their game at Angie's List. It makes them mad because they have to become a member of Angie's List in order to do so and jump through a bunch of hoops to get there. We are a small business in a big market and were happy to hear about the e-commerce portion of our package. It took weeks to figure out what promotions we were going to use. After seeing many samples we finally decided and sent the information in only to get a call that the e-commerce team member had been replaced with someone new. Our new "team member" didn't have any background on our company and didn't even know what line of work we are in. After (I thought) we got everything straight she sent me a proof for what our "store fronts" would look like. EVERYTHING WAS WRONG!!! When I let her know I just got attitude back. So I called my business relationship team member only to be told she had no idea what was going on and would get back to me. That was 2 days ago.
They also dictate what sales we can offer based on other similar companies in my area. We offer a better service, and more items are included in our pricing but we can't make our own price because they don't think it'll sell. I am SO sorry we signed up with them. The samples sent to me offered up to 60% off but I was told all my "store fronts" had to be at my regular price. Biggest discount I could offer was 10% when I have a 30% off coupon on my own website. I just spoke to a sales associate who advised me that in my territory only 720 searches were done for carpet cleaning last year in my territory. This is a huge fabrication of the truth and I told the sales associate to kill the ad and find out exactly what the salesman said to me. When he got back to me he said that the cancellation fee would be waived and they would refund some money back to me. He went on to say that they weren't admitting anything and that if there is any doubt about what was said Angie's List will find in favor of the customer.
I only received 2 calls in four months and asked for a full refund as I was completely lied to. I now understand this company was once founded on local businessmen, work ethic and great referrals, but since it switched hands it's all about the money. I would not recommend this pay to play, high pressured marketing strategy. As a small business owner, I would like to see a return on my investment. I have not received any potential clients, one phone call or email request for my services. I wasted hundreds of $$$ dollars since I was talked into paying a monthly fee last year. Looking back on it now, the commissioned sales rep from Angie's List was very persistent on getting me to join. He literally started out at 3 times the cost, then hounded me every week until I made the mistake to believe him that this would easily pay for itself and be a no-brainer. He talked to me like I was his buddy and he was doing me a favor.
I wish I had some of these "cold calls" that I was a part of recorded, so you can hear the BS. I have tried several times to voice my concerns and help them understand that I am giving them my money every month with absolutely no return on investment. I tried to get refunded or cancel and that's when he decided to bring up that I am locked in for a year, but...he said I can still cancel if I want to keep making the payments. He reassured me along with his manager on several phone conversations that I will see results.
I have been extremely patient and willing to resolve and received no customer service, just very trained salesmen, good at lying to close another deal. What do they care?? Now I am left frustrated and at the place where I hope I can help another home improvement company that may be considering their pay to play service, choose a different direction. If you're reading this you are either trying to make a smart decision on how to get your name out there or like me you were swindled. When I first joined Angies List I was remodeling my house and was very excited about the opportunity to find recommended contractors. But the only good reviews I ever was able to post were for people whom I had found BEFORE I joined Angies List. All the others -- two handymen, computer repairmen, electricians, drywall repairmen, HVAC companies, landscapers, etc -- did very poor work and, in some cases, had to be asked to leave before even completing the jobs for which they were hired.
I also hate the way that Angies List pushes automatic renewal on its homeowners. It's impossible to change that online -- you have to contact Angies List and, even then, it's very difficult. If Angies List is so good, why is it so hard to cancel an account or to cease the automatic membership renewal? My membership fees were outrageous some years -- as high as $50. Now it's only $9.99 but even that amount is too much for what I'm getting. I haven't used it in a long time and tried to find a plumber yesterday. The search function has changed drastically. I used to be able to locate contractors according to how close they were to my house, but apparently I can't do that anymore. Also, I just discovered that VENDORS PAY to BE ON THE TOP OF THE LIST. Meaning, the list of vendors is NOT ranked by reviews, but rather, how much is paid to Angie's List. Total ripoff.

I joined Angie's List a year ago (3/6/2015), partly to help evaluate moving companies. I put a note in my calendar to contact them in time to cancel the renewal. I attempted to do this online, but could not. I emailed them on 3/1/2016. They responded that I did not have a live account. I reconfirmed on 3/2/2016, doubting that this was the case and giving them more information. Again, they said I had no account. Again on 3/2, I contacted them. I had just received their printed magazine. I asked how I could receive this if I weren't a paying member. I provided all the information on the label. On 3/9 I received the following: Your account expired on 3/6/16 and renewal attempts will be made. Once again I told them that I wanted the account canceled and no charges to be made. I doubt they will cancel and may have to notify my card company of their fraud.

But now Angie'sList keeps sending me catalogues and they won't let me unsubscribe. When I asked to be taken off, they placed me on hold. After 20 minutes, I hung up.

I own a company and signed up on Angie's List. I had a A+ with the BBB for over 20 years. I have a C rating on Angie's. Why? Because a woman called my office for a quote. I answered her back with an estimate. Told her I will wait for a reply. She never replied and wrote a bad rating on my business. Without even letting me give my side of the story. She said I didn't show up for the appt. I never made an appt with her. She requested a service that I didn't need to have an appt. I know my business gets messed up with a big brand business. Also used to get bad replies to the BBB for a business with my name in Richmond. But Angie's List didn't even send me her complaint. I got one review and it's a bad one of a customer I never had an agreement with. They won't answer my emails or take her complaint off. Go with your local BBB. They are out there for consumer and business owner alike.

I tried to cancel the subscription as the service was useless to me. It was virtually impossible. I was on hold FORTY MINUTES. I spoke to a rude operator who said there was no other way. I could NOT cancel online. Then she told me they were having "technical difficulties". Then she said the slowdown was "lunch". I demanded a supervisor. She put me on 30 minutes of hold. Don't provide a message that says "your account doesn't exist" for 3 days. I was trying to do a major renovation project but if you can't do searches for 3 days, what's the point? I will not be renewing and I will never give my feedback on service providers. Why help them when they shut you down at will?

I signed up for AngiesList in 2015. After a month, I realized I didn't want the service and I didn't agree with their political stance. I decided to cancel my subscription. William ** from AngiesList sent a confirmation email saying that it was canceled and wasn't going to be renewed in April 2015. I was balancing my account and found a charge from AngiesList for $6.99 on 2/25/16. I called to ask for a refund and they couldn't find my account with my email. When I brought up the email cancellation from last year, I was asked for my name and state; somehow they were able to find it. The account is canceled hopefully and a refund is coming. I hope that no one else encounters the problem of a canceled account renewing. Thanks.

I joined Angie's List when first moving to Florida. The landscaper I hired through them was under the influence of something and all the plants he installed in a row were crooked and diseased. I was afraid of him because he was obviously drunk or high when he did the work so did not report him to Angie's List. Then I hired an HVAC company through Angie's List to do my regular maintenance. I am so disappointed in Angie's List. Beware!! After spending $18,000.00 over the course of two years we cancelled our Business Membership. Needless to say: Two weeks after cancelling we received a bad review from an unknown "customer". Please read details. "Review Date: January 13, 2016, Member: Stephen **, Category: Remodeling - Kitchen & Bathroom, Services Performed: Yes, (More Weight is given to a review where work has been completed.) Work Completed Date: September 12, 2015, Hire Again: No, Approximate Cost: $8,500.00, Description of Work: Poor workmanship on install. High price., Share on Band of Neighbors: No." We contacted our salesperson because we did not recognize the reviewing customer's name. After 10 days of Angie's List "attempting" to contact the customer, this was the response we received from our sales rep...
"It sounds like you are pretty frustrated that the Angie’s List review from Stephen ** will remain on your profile page moving forward. I know that you work very hard to maintain a flawless reputation so even a B grade is probably not up to your standards. If it is any consolation, without the advertising, your profile will probably be buried on the 5th or 6th page. It is unlikely that many of our members will come across this review, let alone the Best Buy Walk-In Bath Tubs profile now that you no longer have first-page placement on Angieslist.com. Regardless, Angie’s List is not in a position to take sides or make a judgment as to whether a review is right or wrong. Our goal is to provide a forum for consumers to share information with one another while staying neutral. Our members own their reports and are responsible for the contents of the reviews, just as companies are responsible for their responses.
We don’t mean to be unhelpful. In fact, we will do everything we can to help you manage your reputation on the list. However, because we are foremost a consumer-oriented service, we must first uphold our member’s ability to express their opinion. In large part, I believe that consumers trust us because we are unwilling to unilaterally change or remove reviews. Because consumers trust us, we in turn are able to provide an advertising product that is worthwhile for the companies on our list. Our policies are not intended to spite you, only to preserve this delicate ecosystem. I would encourage you to not get bogged down in the individual comments our members submit.
Our members make hiring decisions based upon trends within reviews. So long as your ratings remain as strong as they are now, and recurring themes do not emerge in your negative feedback, you should be able to maintain a positive presence on our list." I am absolutely blown away by Angie's List. As long as you pay to advertise, your reviews will not be affected. I feel certain this "poor customer review" was placed by Angie's List. The reason I believe someone at Angie's List wrote this is because of the email.

Come to find out she doesn't really rate their reviews until they pay for a membership. My reviews lay buried until they pressured my customers to join. What an embarrassment. I literally set up my faithful customers to be pressured to join her list! Doesn't matter what they said. It wouldn't make top of list until they joined. What a scam. I was greeted by customer service agent and whom I told what I wanted to do. She asked me why, I told her I did not need the service anymore. She responding saying there were movie tickets and restaurant discounts that I could use, and that she would offer me a 20% discount to stay. So far standard procedure if you and to cancel membership. I checked out what was available and saw it would not be worth it to me, so contacted an agent again and told her what I wanted. She said she'd be glad to set a reminder to come up in December of 2016 so I could cancel it then. I said "no I wanted to cancel it now," she said "ok, it is cancelled and you can can use the account until 2016."
I told her it was not listening, that I wanted to cancel the membership right now not next year. She responded saying "it is cancelled." I said "I am getting a credit correct." She said "no, there is a difference between cancelling and getting a credit. Are you requesting a credit?" I said "yes", and she responded that I would get a credit in shortly. I have been a highly rated and frequently reviewed contractor on Angie's List since 2008. In 2015 I have 100 reviews, an "A" rating and have won their "super service award" every year except one since 2008. I am a licensed painting contractor but my listing was as a home repair company and in late 2015 was contacted by Angie's List and told that because I was performing work outside my license trade that they were revoking all my super service awards, deleting my company from category searches and that the only way customers could find me was by a company name search. Well, they followed through on their threats but in addition to that they deleted all my reviews as a legitimate painting contractor and my company name no longer shows up in a company name search. In other words they removed all trace of my company from Angie's List after an eight year relationship because of a trade licensing violation.
They also removed all my reviews as a legitimate and fully licensed painting contractor which were not in any violation of trade licensing agreements. A number of my faithful customers wrote to Angie's List complaining that no trace of my company could be found on their list. They responded to each customer of mine with a different explanation, none of which were true and told them that I could still be found under company name search which was also not true. After numerous and repeated phone calls to Angie's List Trade Licensing Department I could not get one single straight answer as to why their actions were so punitive in nature and why they were lying to my customers about my status on their list.
My suspicion is that because I had never purchased any advertising packages from Angie's List, because I had all the work I could handle that the word came down from above that my company was to be blacklisted and removed from the list no matter what. My next phone call will be to the Indiana Department of Consumer Affairs and the District Attorney's Office in Indianapolis, Indiana. This company practices fraudulent business, lies to its members and lies to its contractors. You are strongly cautioned to avoid Angie's List as they no longer seem to be a company with any integrity whatsoever.

One deal did not show up under either membership. I was told I needed to cancel the basic memberships and purchase a higher grade membership so that the representative could help me. So I agreed. He then attached the one deal to my family member's account. She called the merchant and received a very high estimate, she had four companies in total give estimates.
I was never contacted to receive any estimates from the company the deal was purchased for despite providing the merchant with my address and phone number along with an email address. A rep from Angieslist called me to have my company market with them and I declined. They said that if we do we would get more awareness, and sales. I decided to do this reluctantly but knew that it works hand in hand with Big Deals and Storefront deals from how they explained it to me. I spend $130 a month with them on Marketing and have had 0 calls in the last 5 months from this. I track all calls through Salesforce so we know where our calls come from or inquires.
I have sold a lot of Big Deals and Storefronts through them and they were suppose to direct deposit the funds into my business checking account. I never was paid, they said they paid a part of the money into a Chase account come to realize that the account they deposited the funds into was not linked to my business but a different company's account from what they admitted to me. They said they can not retract that money and pay me since I should have told them the right account information. To top things off, since the 3rd deposit they made into that companies account was rejected they issued a check out to our company but to a different address not associated with our company. They owe us over $3,000 and promised to have us paid for by Friday 12/4/15 and we are still waiting for our money.
We have fulfilled 100% of our agreement with the Big Deals, and Storefronts with them and our client's that purchased through them and we are getting shafted. Not a good feeling! I as the owner have reached out many times to get this resolved and have been ignored, and find out that their policy is to return calls within 24 hours none of my calls have been returned. I have found out from speaking to someone yesterday that they don't plan on paying me for the first portion that was deposited into an account with another company with us because supposedly I didn't catch it in time and the money was cleared.
