Gardening with your pet in mind

Ask yourself: If you were a dog, where would you like to dig?

You have always wanted to have a garden but one member of your family has been a concern. No, it's not your 6-year-old. It's the other one -- the dog. And maybe even the cat.

Both of these four-legged little buddies like to dig and the last thing you want to do is dig and plant all weekend on your knees, then have it unearthed by the dynamic duo you live with.

But it can be done. Your animals can live in harmony with a peaceful garden actually built around them. The best way to accomplish this is to design your garden to meet your animals' needs.

If you were a dog, what would you want? As a cat, independence is crucial.

Dogs want to romp around so create a path of smooth flagstones set in pebbles that form a dry creek bed dogs can comfortably tread, sacrificing a few feet along the fence for a perimeter path. If your dogs have already created their own paths through the garden, don't try to redirect them. Instead, turn their well-worn routes into proper pathways.

    Digging allowed

Use mulch that isn't bulky or too hard. Small cedar chips are easy on paws yet large enough so they won't cling to silky coats. Use inorganic mulch such as potato stones or pea gravel where appropriate. If you're trying to get a new area of lawn to grow, sod is quicker to establish than seed, especially with pets using the yard.

Dogs and cats like to dig so perhaps create a space where digging is allowed and fence it off so the dog or cat can come in to play.

If you have a male dog you probably are already aware of their need to mark their territory everywhere. You can avoid spots on the lawn and burning of plants by training your dog to go potty in a particular part of the yard. Build a pee post. Just take a nice railroad tie and cut it down to size.

It isn't much harder to train a dog to go where you want him to outside than it is to house-train in the first place. Like all training, it requires time, patience and persistence early on. I know we are asking for a lot but in the long run it will be worth it.

Cats just need an outdoor litter box and outdoor scratching post.

Plant in raised beds or on mounds, and start with 1-gallon or larger plants. Put up temporary fencing around newly landscaped areas; when you remove it, add a rock border or low fencing as a reminder to stay out.

    Romp-proof

Plant romp-proof shrubs and perennials like ornamental grasses around the edge of the garden. Put brittle plants like salvias in the center, where they'll be protected.

Avoid thorny and spiny plants, which can cause serious eye injuries. Be very cautious about growing poisonous plants, like castor bean or hellebore, in readily accessible areas. Visit www.aspca.org/toxicplants for a complete list.

Cats love catnip (Nepeta catoria); they like rolling around on the plant and getting very playful. The plant's precise effect on cats remains a mystery, but there is no question that cats adore it, as well as catmint (Nepeta faassenii and related species). Fortunately, both are tough plants that seem able to withstand feline attention. To discourage neighborhood cats and your own, avoid growing these plants.

Face it -- there will be wrestling and rough housing; you don't want your dogs careening into your foxgloves because that will be the end of the foxgloves. Plant dense edging plants like boxwood or low, resilient creepers — like, say, thyme — as a buffer zone between the dogs' play area and fragile flowers.

Like humans, dogs enjoy basking in the sun. So by all means, give them a deck or a patch of lawn for sunbathing. But remember that dogs can overheat easily, so it's even more important to provide them with cooling retreats. They'll happily share arbors, pergolas, and other shade structures with their owners

If your pet has a friend next door no garden would be complete without a view of the neighbors so create a window or two at your dog's eye level where he can keep an eye on the dog next door.

You have always wanted to have a garden but one member of your family has been a concern. No, it's not your 6-year-old. It's the other one -- the dog. And ...

Kick the bucket with your family

Doing a family bucket list can be a great family exercise

As they get into middle age many people start creating their bucket list. A list of things you want to do before you expire. Before your due date. OK -- to put it simply: before you kick the bucket. Now there's a new trend for bucket lists and it involves families doing bucket lists together.

So what is it about having a bucket list that makes people happy? Dr. Timothy Sharp is a clinical and coaching psychologist and the author of "Live Happier, Live Longer." He says that bucket lists make people happy because they allow people to "do more of the things that they love."

If bucket lists can make individuals feel more fulfilled, it would seem they can make families more united too. Sharp says that the principles of bucket lists can be applied to any area of our lives. He suggests that for family bucket lists to work well, it is important to review them on a regular basis.

Lara Krupicka is a family bucket list advocate, best known for her "Bucket List Life Manifesto" and her books "Family Bucket Lists" and "Bucket List Living For Moms."

"When you allow your bucket list to converge with everyday life, you’ll find a whole host of benefits unfold in your life. And when you bring your family along… well, let’s just say your life will never be the same," she said.

    More meaningful

It's actually a goal-setting adventure for your family. For example: Think about things you would like to do before the kids are grown and out of the house.

You can really discover things about each other because everyone gets very personal about what they dream for themselves and others.

It can make everyday living more meaningful because you set out with a purpose looking for an end result. But bucket lists can be taken in baby steps and small things you do everyday could be on your list.

It's an opportunity to break long-term, seemingly impossible ideas down into manageable short-term events – and then live them out.

Luke Sheedy author of the "Discover Your Path, Your Life is Worth Living," says that creating and working through a family bucket list will "help build strong foundations and deeper connections between family members."

You are probably thinking it sounds great how do we get started. Uh, there's an app for that -- in fact there are many apps for that. Lara lists several on her website

If nothing else, it's a great family exercise that will get you all talking and planning and working toward a common goal.

As they get into middle age many people start creating their bucket list. A list of things you want to do before you expire. Before your due date. OK -- to...

From healthcare to hamburgers, it's a self-service world

The pace of automation is picking up

If you watch an old movie from the 1950s, you're likely to see all sorts of service occupations that aren't around anymore.

The list includes people who pump your gasoline, people who punch the button for your floor in an elevator, and a clerk selling candy and knick knacks at the hotel snack bar. Today, consumers perform all those tasks for themselves and a lot more.

In the future, we'll be doing even more for ourselves too. If you were wondering how fast-food restaurants were going to deal with pressure to raise wages, you don't have to look much farther than Europe.

      Ordering food

Computer Weekly reportsMcDonald's is exploring the use of self-serve kiosks in Europe, presumably before bringing that technology to its U.S. stores. While it is being presented as a way to engage today's tech-savvy consumer, it undoubtedly will also reduce the head count behind the counter in most restaurants.

Other chains are already out in front in that area. Sheetz, a Mid-Atlantic convenience store chain, has been using self-serve ordering kiosks at its sandwich counters for years.

No lines at the Post Office

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has added self-service kiosks in select post offices to cut down on waiting in line in mail a package. At these kiosks you can purchase postage, mail letters and packages, or renew a PO Box using a debit or credit card. Most Self-Service Kiosks are located in Post Office lobby areas with 24-hour and 7 days a week access.

Just a few years ago travelers purchased their airline tickets from an agent at the airport counter. These days, most tickets that aren't purchased online are bought from a ticket-dispensing kiosk.

Now the health care industry is taking a hard look at self-service kiosks. Kiosk Marketplace reports self-service technologies are altering the patient-provider relationship.

One way it's doing that is replacing the human being that asks you health questions and enters your answers on a form, with a self-service kiosk. Patients are using kiosks to check in when they arrive, fill out needed forms, submit information, and read disclosures.

      Drug dispensing machines

Patients may also get their meds through a kiosk. Industry sources project the market for automated pharmacy systems will exceed $7.5 million by 2018. Machines to dispense medication are already in use, accounting for nearly half the pharmacy automation market.

Most of these systems are in use in large hospital pharmacies but the report says retail drug stores hold potential for rapid growth.

Before long, people watching movies from the 1990s will see all sorts of occupations that aren't around anymore.

Feds strike down mortgage kickback deals

Michigan title insurance company ordered to pay $200,000

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has ordered Lighthouse Title, a Michigan title insurance agency, to pay $200,000 for illegal quid pro quo referral agreements.

“Today’s action sends a clear and simple message, that quid pro quo agreements for real estate referrals are illegal,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. “The Consumer Bureau will continue to take action to ensure that the mortgage market is a level playing field where everyone plays by the rules.”

The Bureau found that Lighthouse Title violated the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), which prohibits, among other things, providing something of value to any person with an agreement or understanding that the person will refer real estate settlement services.

The CFPB said Lighthouse Title entered into marketing services agreements (MSAs) with various companies, including, for example, real estate brokers, with the understanding that the companies would refer mortgage closings and title insurance business to Lighthouse.

The agreements made it appear as if the payments would be based on marketing services the companies were supposed to provide to Lighthouse. However, Lighthouse actually set the fees it would pay under the MSAs, in part, by considering the number of referrals it received or expected to receive from each company.

The CFPB’s investigation found that the companies on average referred significantly more business to Lighthouse when they had MSAs than when they did not.

Another month of robust job creation

ADP says the new job tally tops 200K for a sixth straight month

The ADP National Employment Report says September was a strong month of job creation.

According to the report, produced by payroll concern ADP in collaboration with Moody’s Analytics, private sector employment increased by 213,000 jobs last month. The report is derived from ADP’s actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month on a seasonally-adjusted basis.

"September’s jobs added number marks the sixth straight month of employment gains above 200,000,” said Carlos Rodriguez, president and chief executive officer of ADP. “It’s a positive sign for the economy to see the 200,000-plus trend continue.”

      Goods and services

Goods-producing employment rose by 58,000 compared with the 42,000 jobs gained in August.

The construction industry added 20,000 jobs over the month, 3,000 fewer than in August, while there were 35,000 new manufacturing jobs -- the highest total in that sector since May 2010.

Service-providing employment rose by 155,000 jobs in September, down 5,000 from August. Professional/business services contributed 29,000 jobs, trade/transportation/utilities grew by 38,000, and financial activities added 5,000 new employees.

"Job gains remain strong and steady,” said Moody’s Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi. “The pace of job growth has been remarkably similar for the past several years. Especially encouraging most recently is the increasingly broad base nature of those gains. Nearly all industries and companies of all sizes are adding consistently to payrolls.”

      Where the jobs are

Payrolls for businesses with 49 or fewer employees increased by 88,000 jobs in September -- up 6,000 from August. However, job growth was down significantly over the month for medium-sized firms. Employment among companies with 50-499 employees rose by 48,000, compared with 72,000 in August.

Employment at large companies -- those with 500 or more employees -- increased by 77,000, up 29,000 from the previous month. Companies with 500-999 employees added 5,000 -- 1,000 more than in August.
