This is the worst experience I've had with a claims adjuster. I was rear ended by a Wawanesa driver. The adjuster was disinterested, rude and difficult to get a hold of and didn't return calls when I need to talk to them. More importantly the adjuster completely ignored the facts, evidence and my statement of the case and made up a story to suit her needs. She called me up to record my version with her mind already made up about the case. I know this because immediately after my phone testimony she denied my claim and said - get ready for this - "the insurance company always stands by their driver" - let that sink in. She had no interest whatsoever in listening to me.
In light of my multiple testimonies and pictures of the accident, she did not even consider the possibility that I was telling the truth that I got rear ended (even when the other driver admitted to "drifting off"). Wawanesa also have not contacted my insurance company which has left multiple messages them them. The adjuster categorically concluded that I caused the accident which was not even close to possible given the facts. All I was looking for was to have my car repaired after being rear ended. I will now settle my claim in small claims court.
A few years ago I was struck by someone who had an honest insurance company with professional service and cheerfully set me up for repairs in a week (State Farm). If I ever need insurance I will never get it from these dishonest folk. If I'm a client of Wawanesa and need a claim I don't think they will work with you. This company does not strike me as one with a meaningful purpose. This experience with them has left me furious, frustrated and pessimistic. My message to Wawanesa is; You should honor your moral obligations otherwise how can people trust you.
*Updated 2/3/20* Stephen, thank you for taking the time to speak with our Claims Supervisor. We apologize for the frustration that this accident has caused you. In a situation like your accident where there are conflicting accounts and no witnesses, insurers often need to consider evidence of damage. We use the physical damage evidence to both vehicles to support our decision. If you have any questions, please contact our Claims Supervisor.

This insurance company is not reliable. After they settle accident - they will not back you up for any additional repairs, warranty. They will side more with the auto body shop that they work with. High premium that keeps going up every year, but for that - they should at least make the effort to give you a good experience and service. Switch and bait must be their mission!

I have unfortunately had two claims in the past year for issues in my condo and both times I have been shorted on payouts. The first time, I was advised that if the actual repair work exceeded the original estimate, that I would be compensated for the difference. Instead, I was met with silence after several emails and finally gave up and had to use a cheaper contractor.
On the second claim, which took about 2 months to close due to each phone call and email between me and my adjuster taking 48 hours to answer, I had to remind my adjuster that she missed one item that was damaged after my settlement came. She told me to provide receipts and pictures, which I did. The item in question (a mattress box spring) had already been photographed by the plumber sent by Wawanesa as well as the field adjuster who was sent to view my home, so there was no omitting this item. Again, I'm being met with silence.
It seems that when you have a claim with this company, there is no urgency in solving it and in fact you have to become your own project manager to keep things moving along. I didn't realize I was going to be taking on another full time job simply because I had a claim that wasn't my fault. At any rate, after two times, I think it's time to change providers.
Hi Kelly, we're sorry for the frustration you've experienced regarding the handling of your claims and would like to get this escalated for you. Please private message us your policy number and best contact number so that we may have someone review your file and reach out to you.

I’ve had Wawanesa auto insurance for, roughly, 20 years. Zero accidents, zero claims. On our recent renewal our rate increased 20%. Turns out it was because our parked motorcycle (not insured by Wawanesa) fell over and the CHP made a report of it. No damage, no claim, no payout. Just an excuse to raise our rate. We’ve had homeowner’s insurance with Wawanesa for one year. Just learned they’re not renewing because we have a hobby vineyard - not commercial. Lesson learned - I can’t afford cheap insurance. It’s like the airlines. Teaser rates and then look for any excuse to make you bleed. Strongly advise looking elsewhere.

Wawanesa Insurance was recommended to me by a friend in the Insurance business around 18 years back. I have had Automobile coverage with them since then. All these years, I would simply pay the premium and hope I never have to make a claim (against any insurance company :)). While Low rates get you in the door, it is critical to know how an insurance company handles your claim, when and if it happens. In the past few years, I made a couple of roadside assistance claims. Handled promptly and well, and I was on my merry way each time in a timely fashion.
Recently, I had an accident. Everyone from the person who took my report over the phone and helped me with a tow to the team of claims adjusters both internal (repairs to my car) and external (to the other vehicle), were kind, gentle, sensitive, professional and helpful. It really helped calm me down from the day of the accident to the weeks the claims were settled. They communicated with me regularly, responded promptly, and provided me with updates. The claims adjuster asked me to describe what happened, and I did. Based on our conversations, he said, "We would accept liability for the accident (I was making a left turn)." He handled the issue completely and promptly settled with the other party. I just had to respond to some forms and information.
My car: I dropped off my damaged vehicle at a Wawanesa approved repair facility. I made it clear to the repair facility, that I would very much like the car to be fixed, rather than totalled. The repair estimate showed me that it was high enough to go either way. Never had to follow up with the Wawanesa group about my car. The repair place also provided regular updates via e-mail. On the agreed date, I went to the shop, and my car was repaired, and it is as it was before the fender bender.
My Rates: For 17 years with a great driving record, my rates were really low. They did go up some as time went on, reflecting the cost of the insurance business. Now, after the accident, my rate has gone up, but not too much. They are still affordable, and I believe less than rates offered by most other insurance companies for a clean driving record. So very happy with Wawanesa (especially in my time of need). I hope I can keep paying them by continuing to be a customer, but not have to make a claim again.
Hi La, thank you so much for sharing your experience and for being a longtime policyholder. We're so glad that our team has always taken excellent care of you, especially during the claim as it can be a stressful time for anyone. We look forward to servicing you for many more years to come.

I have been with Wawanesa for 15+ years. In early 2018, I traded my 2003 Volkswagen for an Infiniti. I called them to switch vehicles and got an addendum that showed the Infiniti. Six months later, my policy renewal still had the Volkswagen. So, I called them again and told them that the Volkswagen was gone and they told me that they never switched the policy back in February so I had to pay more money. I was angry but what was I going to do? Tonight, while checking my policy, I realized that the Volkswagen is still on the policy almost 2 years later! I always thought that the policy increase was because the new car was an Infiniti. But, now I realized it was because they are charging me for 2 cars when I only own 1. I am going to be calling customer service next week. But, I am starting to think that this company has no clue what they are doing. I am seriously thinking about leaving for another insurance company.

Wawanesa reached out to me and explained why my rates went up. It turned out there was a violation on my DMV record that was supposed to come off. The person working with me was very helpful and I am changing my ratings to a 5. Once i take care of the violation, Wawanesa will retro the rates back to the original terms.

A friend referred me to Wawanesa and they were decent. But in the last few years they kept increasing my auto insurance. When I call they always say it's not my record but the number of accidents they had to cover. Lately, they increased it by over $300 and changed my coverage without consent, adding uninsured motorist and changing deductibles. I am not planning on renewing and would NOT recommend Wawanesa.

I showed up to pick up my car from a friend's house Monday morning to go to work. I notice right away that somebody ran into my car. I called the police and made a report. Then called insurance and made a claim. Little did I know that who or whatever hit my car. Hit it twice. So I called insurance back as soon as I seen other damages. They made me feel like I was neglected toward handling my responsibility in reporting the incident. Now they are saying I need to make another claim because I didn't Initially report the other damages. So now I have to pay two deductible for somebody else's incompetence. It's bad enough I have to pay one deductible for somebody's else's stupidity. Whoever Their adjusters are, Are worthless. If you can see the damages to my vehicle you can tell it from the same vehicle. You guys need a better claims Department.

My car was rear ended. First it took about 5 hours for tow truck to arrive. This was Irvine, 10 minutes from downtown, not some remote area. Then they lost my car for 3 days and didn't know where it was. Finally, it was taken to a body shop they recommended (Carstar McLaren Lake Forest). Initial estimate was 4 weeks. It took them over 2 months to get the repairs done. All this time communication with Wawanesa was horrible. Then, rental company bill came in and submitted for reimbursement. No follow up from wawanesa for 2 months. I had to call other party's insurance to find out. Turned out AAA did everything first week and Jessica **, a claim represenative from wawanesa, simply didn't give a damn. Had to call her supervisor to advance the case. I still have bad repairs by body shop manifesting themselves. A bolt here, a gap there, broken pin, loose screw. Calling wawanesa to get repairs is a nightmare. Nothing gets done.

We chose our own auto collision center to repair the damage and are very happy with the results. Thank you Wawanesa for allowing the car not to be a total loss.

I unfortunately had two separate claims with Wawanesa within one year. I had the insurance for 8 years before ever having to make a claim. During the claims process, the agents always seem bothered that you're calling them or trying to get answers. They have no respect for their insureds and treat you as if you're trying to fraud them. I was found not at fault in both claims, but they have no interest in helping to resolve the claim. The entire process was extremely frustrating! They find any excess to not pay or and reduce payment to the lowest amount possible. This is a low budget insurance company. They will save you money in premiums, but not provide any valuable service once you have to file a claim. I used to have AAA insurance and always received stellar service. I'm changing insurance companies!

I submitted a claim recently with Wawanesa Insurance after some damage occurred to my car when I parked it in my apt complex's guest parking overnight. There was damage to the windshield and right fender. I had no idea what occurred. Instead of assisting me with my claim, they assigned me to one of their claim adjusters who basically called me a liar. She said my car was in motion, hit a cement post and the windshield damage was another accident. This is without any proof. So a total in damages of $1377 was reduced to basically nothing, and they gave me a check for $60 to cover my damages. Just a deceptive and dishonest company.

Well I never really had any issues and we've been with them for 10 years now. They're pricing is affordable if you have a good driving record and the coverage is certainly sufficient. I don't like that their customer service hours are limited, and that they only have a San Diego office (probably because they're Canadian based). With that said, if you've got a good driving record I would recommend you give them a shot.

If you get into an accident no matter how big or small they won't assist you and often will breach their contract of good faith. They will delay, delay, delay to encourage you to give up and will not perform their duty as an insurance provider. Also they don't do any of the work and will make you do your own investigation and submit evidence which is their job and what you pay them for. You are guilty from the start and even after presenting enough evidence they won't help you and create more distress. I advise anyone using this company to file a complaint with their state insurance commissioner if they have been harmed.

I just borrowed a random guy's phone in the parking lot to call but the guy assisted me took too long to process it. The guy I talked to said there is someone coming but I waited for 1 hr and 30 mins but no one came. I called up again and borrowed the security phone, this time the guy I talked to said someone already came and did the job but no one came. He said he's sending another service to unlocked my car but I don't want to keep waiting so I get creative. I took two small branches and tie it with my shoe laces and try to get the keys out because my car windows are slightly open. I got car key out. And ended up not getting any service from you. ORIGINAL REVIEW 08/07/2019:I've had some bad luck with a few comprehensive claims in the past 4 yrs or so.. Long story short my car was damaged when parked unattended. They're making me feel like a crook trying to have my car repaired. This time my car was scratched, and my windshield was covered; I figured it was scratched up too much to drive around (did turn out the body shop was able to polish it up with some exceptions of chips that came of this). I called Wawanesa and told them that I would just drop off the car and they could work on the claim with the shop directly. They didn't approve a rental, saying they needed to determine if the car was undriveable. I explained that I could not see out my windshield and wasn't comfortable driving it around. So I took the car in. I tried several times to get an update, as I was paying out of pocket for a rental car. Next contact was 3 WEEKS to get their appraiser or adjuster to approve the claim.
3 Weeks later I get a call from a guy named Aaron (no last name), he's treating me completely unprofessional; and tells me to take my car back now that the windshield was cleaned. He informs me that a Private investigator will call me. I pick up my car and get a call from the PI; meet with him. I had no problems cooperating. No contact for 2 weeks; I requested updates and nothing. 2 Weeks later a Lawyer calls me requesting phone records, financials, etc. This morning we sent me an email that says: 'We spoke on Monday and I told you I was retained to represent Wawanesa General Insurance Company with respect to your insurance claim with them. Sadly, we did not get you the letter I promised but you will have it today. I will then call you to discuss. The date for your Examination Under Oath can be moved and we can jointly agree on a location. We will discuss the records request during our call.'
Are they kidding me? They are treating me like a criminal. I called and asked for a supervisor; left a message for one. The same Aaron (no last name but says he's Wawanesa investigator) calls me and would give me details. I requested a supervisor again and he told me he/she is out today. I requested a call tomorrow. WTF is this? and Examination under Oath? I don't know what tricks they are trying to pull but this is not normal. This is a personal property claim, I'm a client that pays for insurance. RUN AWAY FROM SHADY COMPANIES AND GO TO A BIG REPUTABLE ONE. I'm done with Wawanesa. Worst experience ever!!

Do not use this insurance. They will trap by giving you lower rate than other insurance and then they will not pay out to you when there is a claim, plus they will increase premium without cause. Most of us sign up and forgot to shop around. This insurance company is not worthy for a 100 bucks discount if they don't pay you when there is a claim or try not to pay properly. As little as they could. I was in that trap. I had them for 20 yrs and a good driver discount and all that but when I made one little claim which didn't even cost much to fix car, they didn't pay me at all by appraising it all under my deductible amount. It sucks. I urge anyone to see review before getting in with them. I did not see review when I sign up with them. My bad.

If you are seeking credible and honest insurance I would avoid this company. They will take your money and not help you when you really need it. I was involved in a car accident and they said it was 100% my fault without a second thought, and decided in their best interest to not do anything because it would cost them too much time and money. In summary, they don't do anything, just look at the many negative comments from people similar experiences they all can't be lying. The purpose of insurance is so you can have peace of mind and protection but this company doesn't look out for their clients, their clients are the ones feeding them so they are biting the hands of the people that pay their bills and expenses. Don't say I didn't warn you. They do this on purpose so they can raise your premiums and continue to do harm to their customers.

Have been with the company for more than 14 years and all the recent rate increases are just too much to swallow. In the last year or so my rate increases from about 800 to 1000 and the latest to 1200 (not to include all the "mild" increase prior). With no accident or anything, it is just hard to accept. To be fair the latest increase is mostly due to me replacing a car with a new Volvo. However when I check other insurance company the volvo should cost less to insure than my previous car. Anyway I have dropped Wawanesa for homeowner insurance early this year due to same reason and I guess I'm doing the same soon.

Soon after, I was interviewed by a representative of Wawanesa, then I was contacted by their Lawyer.
The attorney from the Farrar Law Group contacted me about doing a 3 to 5-hour examination under oath. My doctor urged, my wife and I not to participate, due to medical issues. I provided a letter from the doctor and a police report and Wawanesa decided they would not honor my claims. I believe my claims were denied because I am ** and the lawyer’s tone, regarding my claims, was racially biased from the beginning and so was the actions of Wawanesa. Made a claim against this apparently very unpopular company when the driver of their client's car hit me as I was trying to exit a multi lane traffic circle. The other driver was in the outermost lane, to my right, even though she was going 3/4 around the circle, failed to yield to the car to the left, my vehicle, so as I exited to the right, she kept going and swiped right into me. Unfortunately police too busy to show up.The ludicrous Wawanesa assessment was that I was changing lanes in the traffic circle and hit her, so apparently they're as ignorant of how to use a roundabout as the other driver.
The damage and diagram I provided of the circle, combined with the other driver's own statement that she was in the wrong lane and didn't yield establish fault and it wouldn't take a forensic accident savant to figure out exactly what happened. This company isn't doing the driving public - or that driver for that matter - any favors by covering up reckless driving behavior and acting like it's ok. Will be filing complaint with CA Dept of Insurance on what I consider to be this sham company.

Unsafe! My granddaughter has been stranded in a college parking lot for three hours waiting for a tow, at night?? Unacceptable! The call centers are in Oklahoma, Texas, wherever! Oh, and no supervisors are available to file a complaint? Seriously! I have to wait until morning to call the San Diego office to complain? How about refunding me for 20 years of worthless towing fees!!! Shame on you Wawanesa for not keeping drivers safe!

Recently got married so since I had Wawanesa insurance under my parents, the hubby and I decided to stick with Wawanesa and get our own plan. I've had Wawanesa for about 8 years and thankfully never had any accidents. About a month and a half ago while my hubby was getting a haircut, this girl ran into our parked truck and ripped the front bumper off. Thankfully, we were able to get the girl's info and placed a police report. This is what I'm confused about... They have her insurance and we still have to pay our $500 deductible? Also, they only cover the daily car rental fee. We needed a car for three days so they covered $30/day but they don’t cover everything else. We had to pay $170 out of pocket. So inconvenient. Why doesn't her insurance reimburse us for this?
Anyways, I called asking about the deductible and they said once the other party pays Wawanesa then they will send us our check. How do I know there’s urgency to get us our money back? No customer service at all. Wawanesa should cover our deductible and go after the other party to get their money back. Then there will be urgency because of course they want their money back ASAP. After reading these reviews, we are definitely going to start looking for another insurance. Btw, even after having our truck fixed we never received a phone call with an update. I've had to call every time to see what is going on. If anything, why not email the customer with updates? All I know is I am not waiting 1-2 years to receive my deductible. I am going to keep calling every week until we get our money back. Why do we pay $180/month to have to deal with this?

We have never filed a claim before. After 15 years with Wawanesa we had to file a claim on our motorhome. It's was absolutely horrible dealing with representatives. Took over 1 month to get windshield done and then Wawanesa told you one thing and did another when it came time to pay. After several phone calls and talking to several representatives because you can never talk to your assigned claim representative she was never available. They never did what they said. It all comes down to never file a claim with this company.
Thank you for speaking with the Claims Supervisor. We apologize for any delay or confusion with regard to your claim. We hope that the Claims Supervisor was able to clarify the process. Should you need any other assistance please contact the Claims Supervisor and he would be happy to help you.

My 2019 BMW windshield cracked to a point where it cannot be repaired. I called Wawanesa to file a claim for a replacement and it turned out Safelite is the company that takes care of their glass repair/replacement claims. I filed my claim on 4/17/19 and decided to have the dealership replace the windshield since it involved recalibrating the cameras, which Safelite does not do.
I've been going back and forth with Safelite since day 1 on getting a price approval on a price sheet that my dealership sent over to them on the 17th. The price sheet lists OEM windshield, other parts, labor, and sales tax. Today, 4/30/19, Safelite sent me an approval via email. The approved amount typed out in the email is only for OEM windshield. It does not include other parts, labor or sales tax. I asked them about other items on the price sheet, they said to submit it with the invoice and they'll approve it then. How am I supposed to feel confident in bringing my car in to fix when the written approval is only for a fraction of the cost? They keep saying OEM is approved, OEM is approved. What about the other items besides OEM? Very frustrating to have to deal with them. I hope Wawanesa partners with a company that is more professional and organized.
Leanne, we sincerely apologize for any issues you've had with your claim and working with Safelite. We're constantly trying to improve our processes and work with only the best and most reputable vendors. We truly do appreciate your feedback. We've had the Safelite Account Manager look into this situation and he's attempted to reach you but was only able to leave a voicemail. Please contact him back and he'd be happy to work through this portion of the claim with you.

Long time customer (like 30 years). Wawanesa has always been good to me. Like others I dislike the 6 month pay program. And I can see how sending a pic of damage to a car could cause some confusion in assessing a correct amount to cover the damage. But other than those two policies I've found Wawanesa to be prompt in coverage of damages and amounts to cover the damage more than enough. My personal experience on the few mishaps I've had is that once contacted they've had an adjuster come to my house within a couple days and once written up I've had a check in my mailbox within 10 days thereafter made out to me. And me alone so I'm free to pick whoever I want to fix the damage.
From my experience I'm really surprised to see these negative posts. But I'd be willing to guess that if you were to research ANY insurance company you'd find some site where people are posting bad reviews. I've stayed on top of researching rates every year and I can't imagine as one poster here stated that they got a 600 dollar cheaper rate with another carrier. Usually it's one of my friends that I've referred to Wawanesa that ends up saving 600 bucks. And, for better coverage. Ya, the six month pay period sucks. But it is a little inconvenience for a better policy. Obviously I'm disappointed to read where Wawanesa has fallen down on the job with so many. This site is my first experience hearing anything bad about the company.

My husband was rear ended by a driver and was found 100% “at no fault”. Wawanesa was able to contact the “at fault driver’s” insurance company, only to tell us the driver claims it was my husband's fault. Wawanesa said they would issue us a check but we would have to come up with our 500.00 deductible. Once the check is issued, they would send our file to their recovery department and they would then try to collect the money from the “at fault driver’s” insurance company. We would get our deductible back but it could take 1 1/2 years to 2 years.
Why do we have to come up with the deductible? Are they using “uninsured motorist” portion of our insurance? If we have been deemed 100% no fault, why doesn’t Wawanesa cover everything. What if we don’t have the deductible? Wawanesa says the the “at fault” insurace company claims they cannot reach their client or their client is not answering their call? They were able to reach her to get a statement that she was not at fault. Now she can’t be reached? I have been insured with Wawanesa for approximately 20 years. I don’t believe I have ever made a major claim. I am a good client. Who do I get in touch with?

Had a rock hit my windshield and got a crack along with line going across it. Called to have a replacement and it seems Safelite is the one who does the repairs now. They told me I had to pay for the deductible and maybe Wawanesa would cover the rest but that depends on the billing department. They were supposed to call with a couple days but never called so I pushed my appt further away to found out if they would cover the rest.
Well after calling and speaking to the supervisor (they said that's who would call me) they would not cover for OEM glass even though I would still pay for deductible. They would only cover an aftermarket windshield according to the lady who called me. She informed me that's what is on the disclosure. They only give an OEM windshield for a new 2018 or 2019 car and not my 2010. I asked for the disclosure to sent to me and nowhere does it mention anything about OEM windshield being replaced only on 2018 or 2019.
This is what was on the disclosure (she told me page 11) "F. In determining the amount necessary to repair damaged property, the amount paid by us will be based on the cost to repair or replacement parts and equipment which may be new, reconditioned, remanufactured, or used, including but not limited to: 1. Original manufacturer parts or equipment; and 2. Non- original manufacturer parts or equipment." I don't see anything about covering only for OEM on a 2018, 2019. Also says "may be new". Either she was lying or didn't know about the rules. You guys can decide if you would like to use them in the future as your company.

I switched to other company and got better rates, better coverage. Wawanesa is supposed to have lower rates than other companies because Wawanesa does not have agencies. Had my Truck Stolen recently. The claims process was a absolute nightmare, the adjuster felt her only role was to watch from the sidelines and deny expenses, not helping me through the process, no consultation, no helping deal with the Autobody shop, not even forwarding them the information I had given her. We could not even reach her by phone. Always had to e-mail. My truck was gone for 3 months!! for repair and came back with a list of issues that I needed to "deal with through the Autobody shop" or fix myself.
I was paying insurance for 2 specific reasons. 1) To get me back to the place I was before the event. 2) To have a helping hand when I did have a issue. Instead I got a distant accountant with E-mail, might as well deal with a cheap insurance company from China. When I asked to dispute claims items that decided by her with no agreement or consultation with me, I was told, "Here's our dispute mechanism - hire your own appraiser and they can fight it out with ours. Good luck making that work for you."
By the way the Appraiser was also terrible, the shop evaluated that my truck needed a batch of Front end work that it did not need (I have pictures to prove it), instead of maybe actually taking a look he just reported to the adjuster only and they disallowed the work meaning no mechanical work was done at all. I got back a truck with a large list of repairs and less functionality. On top of that I have to deal with the shop warranty process with no help. Stay away from this company.

I called to report an accident, the other person was/is at fault. I should not have to come out my pocket to pay for anything due to the other person is liable. They are telling me that I have to pay the deductible to get my car out of the shop & they will reimburse me for everything, once the other insurance company pay them. No, you should be keeping up with everything to charge the other person insurance & you wait to get the money, that's what I pay you for. They then turn around & say you called us, so we are using your collision insurance.
That's where it's a problem so I should have not called to inform you of the accident & provide the other person insurance information, I'm a little confused now! Then the rep tells me, "We are waiting to hear if they accept the claim," & have I called them. Once again, that's why you get paid to handle all this. Why do I have to contact the other person insurance, that's your job, are you going to reimburse me for doing your job? I am very upset. Halfway to my house a rep from Wawanesa calls and asked ME to pull the tow truck over and tell him to take my truck to a different facility. I told them I was in a different car behind the tow truck on the freeway and it was UNSAFE for me to do that. She calls the driver and instructed him to take my truck somewhere else. I didn't hear from Wawanesa until I was the one who called them 5 days later.
On that call Wawanesa rep accused me of canceling the delivery of the truck to their facilities and excused herself of not knowing where my truck was and not having any assessment on my truck. I told her SHE was the person who instructed the driver where to store my truck from the get go. She told me I HAD to call some body shop I have no idea who they were to "release" my truck. That's HER job. I asked to be placed in a 3 way call and she didn't get answers from the places she called. She said my truck was "LOST". She promised to keep me updated... She HAS NOT! That my friends is highway robbery.
I was so mad I called and the lady kept saying, "It is not us. It's the CEO. He wants a bigger bonus. I can't do anything for you." She suggested maybe I go to another insurance company. I have a feeling since I am grandfathered in the only way they can get rid of me is to get me to cancel. How do you do that by raising the rate so high I leave. I am saddened to write this review as I have been a customer of Wawanesa for 35 years. This company has lost its heart and soul. I was talked into getting appliance insurance to cover all my appliances. The $500 deductible is bad enough, but when I put in a claim and jumped though all the hoops over 5 weeks, just to be informed "Claim Denied". For all you people who have this coverage and have an electric glasstop cooktop, you should be informed that the glasstop is excluded from coverage. Even if it breaks for any unknown reason. It would have been simple for Wawanesa to have told me this upfront, instead of 5 weeks later at the end of the claim process. I consider this incompetence. This company is full of red tape and don't have enough people to run it properly and the people that work there don't have the proper skills to do their jobs. All you have done is raise my premiums every year only to give me the excuse that it isn't a covered claim.

I am extremely shocked, to be honest. They actually extended our rental to cover the delay, in getting our car approved, for its repair. When I spoke with the supervisor, today, I was all set to hear, that they couldn't do anything for us, but no. They did. This is the customer service that I expected and received. It would have been nice if the adjuster, would have put in the request, and saved us some anxiety... Either way, customer service has been provided and I will happily change my review/star rating.

My daughter, who is a teenager, was in an accident on August 23. She was making a left turn, so she was made at fault. We never disputed that. We filed our claim the next morning, on the 24th. I received a copy of the estimate to repair my car on the 30th. I should add, because this is what my dissatisfaction is regarding, that we pay for the rental car on our policy. We picked up the rental on August 25th. I emailed our adjuster on the 31st, asking when I could take the car in for repairs. I was continually told, that the estimate has not been uploaded into the claim file, so we have to wait for approval. I would email every few days, to find out what was going on. Always told, still waiting.
On September 10th, I finally heard that the car has been approved for repairs. 11 days, after I received my copy of the estimate. My car was being held in their storage facility. On September 11th, I heard from the body shop (a shop on the preferred list) that they have the authorization from Wawanesa, but the storage facility, was not given permission to release the car. Another email went out, and on the 12th the car was released. This is 12 days, after I got my copy. Our rental is for 30 days. I, again, sent another email requesting that they extend the rental car, for the 12-day delay. Was told flat out NO. I then sent an email to a supervisor, this past Tuesday, asking for this consideration. I told her, we only want the rental for the extra 12 days.
I received a response, that she'll review the file. Still no response, and the rental company called to remind us, the car needs to be back this Sunday. My car should be repaired, by October 5. We have filed 1 other claim, in almost 10 yrs. I didn’t call when the prices doubled. I didn’t complain. Now I am. The lack of any helpfulness is mind-boggling. I tried calling the supervisor, but no surprise, went straight to voicemail. I have done everything in writing, so I would have proof of my correspondence. I am so disappointed with them. I never had a problem before.

I currently insure 5 vehicles with Wawanesa, was 6 but sold one. Now every 6 months I get a rate increase. This is with no claims or tickets etc on depreciating vehicles, get a response "we have a rate increase in Oregon". Have been with them for a while now but maybe not much longer.
*Update 9/21/2018* Thank you for giving us the opportunity to review your policy. We hope you are pleased with the outcome and look forward to continuing to service all your future insurance needs.

An object hit my car while I was driving and damaged the front left end of my car. After calling Wawanesa to file a claim, they first said it was 100% my fault without even looking at the car. It took a week for the claim to even process. They are not even going to give me a rental car, so there is no way for my son to get to school. The car is still damaged and is sitting in my driveway (currently undrivable). I have paid the premium on time for the past 5-6 years, but there is no focus on the customer. They will not even pick up my phone now and they got mad at me for calling to see the progress of the claim. Extremely unprofessional insurance company. I am definitely going to look for a new one if this does not get resolved any time soon.

Until about a year ago Wawanesa was a good insurance company with decent customer service. They tried to force me to go to a body shop that was not close to where I live. When you accident no matter how minor it is be sure to get an attorney because if you don't regardless if it wasn't your fault Wawanesa still say you are at fault 100%. I don't know if they do in purpose so they can increase your premium but I noticing that everytime minor accident when I don't have attorney they told me I'm at fault 100% even obviously it was the other party fault even one time police report say that it wasn't my fault. Only that time when I show them the report and they changed it to I'm not at fault. So be careful.

Where do I begin? I would like to say that I was very happy with the service I was provided two years ago and referred the company to many of my entourage. However, it all goes downhill from a month ago. I am afraid I no longer have anything good to say about this company. I made an automobile claim in early May. Only to receive a letter two weeks afterward to tell me that they were no longer going to insure me this upcoming July 9th. My claims were a cracked windshield due to a rock, a non-guilty claim (victim of a hit-and-run). And now, another that I am not guilty for, for a total of 3 claims.
Here is the problem: My vehicle is due for repair the 16th of July, therefore unable to find another company who will insure me. The file is simply not closed! Now I have called numerous times and have always acted in a professional manner since I also work in customer service. They have transferred me to numerous departments because they all calling they cannot fix the issue. Their reasons are: "I have no power over this, once the letter is sent, we cannot do anything. Let me transfer you..."
I am honestly getting very impatient and I have made a complaint with GAA. They told me that what they aren’t doing is not permitted and that they were to force Wawanesa to give me another contract of a year duration if they were not going to comply. I followed all the procedures, but was hoping that they’d make things simpler. This is so unfortunate, I feel bad for the others who have been having issues with this company, for their employees who seem to lack training and capabilities due to their system, and for everyone who I referred to the company.

Let me start by saying, I have been with Wawanesa for over 20 years with not one incident. A few years ago, they sent a letter with the title, "Exciting news for our policyholders!" Here's the exciting news. 1. The yearly policy is now a 6-month policy. 2. My previous yearly rate doubled. 3. Their customer service and wait time doubled. Over the years, I have recommended Wawanesa to many of my friends and family. Regretfully, they have become a company I cannot say one good thing about. After reading some of the reviews on this site, it appears that the enormous rate increases are systemic.

I have insurance to my home and my cars since 2 years. To be honest I was happy until last month. My wife had an accident in her car and she got injured and carried by ambulance to hospital. After we left the hospital we called Wawanesa Insurance and told them what happen and since the first day we ask for hospital bills and we told, "Don’t worry. Later we gonna talk." After that procedures went smooth. They contact us telling us the car is total loss and each time we asked about hospital bills the answer later. After we got the answer for car total loss the connection between us and them was lost. I was calling the adjuster called Maria almost each day leaving her messages. No response. Also sending emails asking her about hospital and ambulance bills. Also send her a copy of those bills. Also no answer like somebody was ignoring my messages.
After 3 weeks I got the call from her telling me that my policy doesn’t cover medical expenses. Also she was very rude on the phone. For example telling me to go educate myself about insurance policy and all my fault was trying to ask her to explain me my policy and trying to tell her nobody explain me my policy before. Also I asked her, "Why did you ignore me for 3 weeks". Unfortunately no direct answer. She told me what difference it make 3 weeks less or more. After that I tried to reach her manager for another whole week. Finally I got the call from her supervisor a lady called Nickol. I told her all my concerns. She promised me she gonna investigate and get back to me within a week.
The week passed still waiting the call, also we bought another car. I called them to switch the policy from our old car to the new one 'cause our policy ends in August. I been told I have to pay for the new car. I told them ok so I paid through the phone to find out that they owe me money from the car was lost. I called again. All the answer I heard that somebody make a mistake and I should pay for switching the cars and I should wait 12 days until they gonna send me my money back (as it was my fault!!!). This is my experience with those guys.

Let me start by saying that I was a happy customer for 4 years. I made a couple of claims. None my fault and they were good, always will deduct my deductible and they will pay me the difference. I ran into a vandalism claim and that's when things went south. I made a claim not because I wanted Wawanesa to pay but because I wanted them to support me engage the party at fault to pay the damages.
I spoke with Wawanesa twice and they close my claim without notifying me or giving me a courtesy call, the first time I spoke with them was to make the claim and the second time was when my claim was transferred to a claims representative. Long story short, I took my car to a repair shop. They have an estimate lower than my deductible and Wawanesa just close my policy without notifying me that my claim was being closed, I gave them a call and I was just told that the damages were lower than my deductible and I have to pay for my damages. The whole reason I open a claim was for them to help me get the other party to pay for the damages but as long as they don't have to pay money they won't lift a finger for you. I'm pretty sure the story will be totally different if they had to pay thousands of dollars. I'm pretty sure they will call me more than twice.

My auto insurance is increasing every 6 months even though Department of Insurance has not approved the rate increase every 6 months. I got about $100 - $200 minimum increase every 6 months. My rate increased more than 300% within a few years. I know Department of Insurance has not approved the rate change for the period of 1/2018 - 12/2018 but they increased my premium anyway even though I did not have any violation during this period.
I called and talked to the rep who hung up on me when she could not answer my questions. I then wrote email from their secured site. After 2 days, while I am still active customer, they deleted my account and I could not write them anymore. Then I used regular email address and wrote them, they totally ignored my emails. They are basically telling me that I have to take it or leave but rate increase does not need approval from Department of Insurance. Wawanesa was good company until about 5 years ago. But they started increasing about 25% on auto insurance every 6 months. Within 3 years they increased 150% as rate adjustment approved by Department of Insurance (per Wawanesa, need to verify with DOI) and they increased 200% at the same time for 2 violations. So, within 3 years, my auto insurance increased by 350%. They know that you won't get better rate when you leave them with 2 violations. So, they rip you off. If you are in the same situation, you must file a complaint with DOI just the way I did. I will continue to make noise in the Internet until they start to listen and DOI starts investigation on Wawanesa's monopoly practices.

My broker put in a request and suggested I call Wawanesa directly and see if I have any luck with customer service, maybe they could speed it along. I have NEVER heard of a letter of experience taking more than a couple hours... When I just called (780) 469-5700, I spoke to the girl in the payments department, she was very rude. I explained that I'd like to start a new policy and need that letter so my insurance will be cheaper. She asked me which broker I spoke with, so she could call and ask why they're telling me these things (like how I should call them directly to request it). I told her I'm not going to get anyone in trouble, so she hung up on me. Awful, AWFUL customer service.

I experienced an incident where one of their insured vehicles backed up into my vehicle and this is where the nightmare began. The driver assumed fault, Wawanesa failed to get back with me or my insurance company for over (3) months and once I did get an opportunity to speak with someone he was not informed, unprofessional and was very disrespectful. The finding provided to my insurance company varied from the information provided to me once I informed them that the call would be recorded.
Any person in their right mind knows that it does not take (3) months for any insurance entity to find out if a driver is excluded, if so, run for the hills! This is something that you could find out in days if not immediately. I now have to take additional time off of work to take the driver to small claims court and I will be obtaining a lawyer to turn over the recorded call and subpoena the calls placed by my insurance company which clearly demonstrates fraud being committed. If you have an issue with Wawanesa it is important that you be persistent or seek legal counsel if need be as their unethical practices need to be brought to light.

20 years of loyalty and referrals are toast, thanks to their lack of training and unprofessionalism. Before my most recent accident my last claim with them was 9 years ago. At that time they were the best insurance company around. Always fair with strong customer service skills. In the last year things have changed. Read any review on this company in the last year. They have dropped service in exchange for numbers. I’ll spare the readers all of the details simply because every other review tends to agree to issues such as doubled rates, falsifying fault, and low ball settlements. My complaint is about Donnelle **, and Meghan **.
Concerning Meghan, she was my claims representative. She tried to handle the claim, however her lack of customer service skills was too distracting to listen too. I’ve called Wawanesa many times over the decades and figured it was a one off from the norm. I called to ask for any other claims representative and was kicked to her boss Donnelle **. This is where things get strange. Donnelle seamed to be distracted during our conversation or she just didn’t care about the lack of service skills in her people. To top things off she flat out lied to me twice, and the began yelling at me that I was calling her a liar. In my experience people who shout “Are you calling me a liar?” are almost always full of it. First thing she told me was that it was against all rules to change claims representative, UNTRUE. With one email I got a new claims rep.
Secondly and more important is their low ball scam. Wawanesa will never pay you what your car is worth. They go low and if you don’t comply they will force you into an appraisal contest that you pay for out of your own pocket. The cost can run up to $500. I asked Donnelle ** how much it normally cost to get her response after showing no interest in complaint about poor customer service skills. I had already been told by 3 Wawanesa employs the cost, so it was a bit of a test. Donnelle ** made it clear to me she had no earthly idea how much it could cost to argue the amount of the loss. I found it extraordinary difficult to believe that she didn’t have the knowledge that 3 lower employees had of the top of their head. Then after catching her in a lie she begins to yell at the customer. Long story short, after 20 years of loyalty and referrals, I’m now looking for someone else.

I was with Wawanesa for my auto insurance for 19 years and renters insurance for 9 months. Even though my house was stripped down to studs and the foundation and rebuilt, they wouldn't insure it because it was too old on the public records but they did insure my things after I sold my house. For most of my time with them they were absolutely outstanding. I only had 1 claim.
My car was a melted pile of aluminum after the 2003 Cedar Fire. I filed my claim the next day and had a check in my hand 5 days later with no red tape. Up until the beginning of 2017 I would have given them 5 stars. However, something happened and they plummeted into a dark hole. Calls were impossible - you would be on hold easily for an hour with no connection. If you left your number to be called back, it would take days for them to return your call, if at all! And of course, the call back would be random so it was unlikely that you would be there for their call so the frustration would continue.
I moved out of state and wrote them a notification of my address change, requesting my car and renters coverage be cancelled. I didn't get my refunds but was consumed by a complicated and difficult move so I just resigned to letting the refunds go after two attempts to call them about it failed (again - impossible to reach them by phone). Then I started getting bills! I was finally able to talk to a human and she treated me like I was lying. She said there were no problems with long phone waits and that I never put in an address change!
She finally said if I could prove I had other insurance to show I really did move at that time, she would send me a refund. I did and received a bill for another year!!! I sent a letter explaining the whole series of events along with a copy of my new insurance at the time of my move and all I got was a call saying they only received a notice of address change with that letter - 6 months later!!! So no refund on either policy, no apology, no acknowledgement of any of the things I stated in my letter. I am so angry and frustrated with them!!! It's not worth those consuming emotions so I'm just going to drop it.
Bottom line: They are impossible to contact, impossible to work with, horrible with their customer service and use their incompetence to hold onto money due their customers! On top of that, at about the same time the problems started, they increased their rates DRAMATICALLY with no explanation! I am SO glad to be done with them!!! I don't understand how or why they changed so drastically but I recommend you stay far away from them.

After having insurance with Wawanesa Oregon for over 10 years, I was hit in March 2017, at that time the police determined there was no fault, as I was not in the wrong, and supposedly the unlicensed driver who hit me was also not in the wrong. The claim adjuster or analyst, said the other party would not give a statement. All of the sudden my insurance DOUBLES and I call to ask why, I'm told it's because I was AT FAULT... WHAT???! No one even fully investigated the issue because the other party wasn't complying. That being said, I am searching for a new insurance company and am 1 day past Wawanesa's grace period as I did not pay my newly DOUBLED rate on time, and was hoping to only pay 1 month while I looked for other insurance. I had planned on staying with them, and paying on time until I had realized my quote was only for 6 months and not a year like usual and had increased sooo much! More than double.
Anyways, I call them today in regards to just make a stupid payment and they want to lapse me! Couldn't be more upset!!! I have always paid on time, always paid a year in advance, the one time I am "late" without receiving a cancellation letter, and they tell me I am one day too late and they can't make an exception to re-instate me! **!!!! By the way, I tried to log on earlier in the week and make said payment but their services were down... so I waited until today, my day off. They could care less. No incidents, no lapses, nothing prior, until 2017... cannot believe they treat their customers this way! I'm leaving nonetheless. You really do get what you pay for, and now that they have raised their rates, I can say you would be majorly overpaying for their services if you chose to go with them!

I had the worst experience with Wawanesa when I actually needed their help as one would when carrying an insurance policy. Their rates are lower than most but you get what you pay for once you are actually involved in an accident. I was struck by an 18 wheeler tractor trailer from the driver side with $18,000 done in damages. The police did not make a conclusion on who's at fault and I was assigned a horrible adjuster by the name of Shimmy **. She was very insincere and rude and made me the culprit when I was the one who was struck by an 18 wheeler. I was dissatisfied with them concluding me at fault without ever leaving their San Diego office to access the car's damage and or location of the incident. I have never heard of one being at fault when you are the one who was struck.
I have called a lawyer to sue for what is right and I have decided to cancel my policy with Wawanesa as soon as my policy is up for renewal. Regardless of the outcome of who's at fault, I have never witnessed such a cold reaction from an adjuster in all my years of experience. It is Shimmy who has caused me to want to cancel my policy. Then 5 days later they tried to take April 28ths payment again, and of course the money was not there, now I have been trying to get this amended for the past little while, and Wawanesa continues to send me letters of experience that only state canceled due to non payment, when if the miscommunication did not happen, I would not be here. From the automotive side, they offer excellent service. Came out of the building to see that someone had run into the bumper of my car. Called Rep from Wawanesa and they came out to evaluate the situation. Booked repair work within the week. We have both our auto and property policies through Wawanesa. To cancel one or the other increases the cost of our policies.

I've been with Wawanesa for over 10 years and have never had a problem until today. I found out today that when I paid my 1,400 premium in October it was only for 6 months. I've been paying 1,400 for 3 cars for several years and all of a sudden they double my premium. I can understand a rate hike... but let's be reasonable, double? Really Wawanesa? I'm so disappointed in this company. I'm shocked that they would do this. I wasn't even aware that they changed me to a 6 month policy. I'm definitely going to cancel my policy and take my business elsewhere.

Needless to say, I will go back to Progressive. I have a feeling this company will be going belly up real soon!

My son was involved in traffic collision while away at a university. On his way to class, he was struck by another motorist. My contact with the officers and my son indicates my son was not at fault. A week later I received a letter placing my son 100% at fault and Wawanesa paying out for the other insured claim. The only evidence of my son's determination to be at fault, was the Wawanesa adjuster interview with my son. They did not rely on the police report nor were they able to interview the other party. I obtained a police report which clearly places the other party at fault and an independent witness on the police report corroborates my son's non-fault. I forwarded a copy of the police report to Wawanesa and I have been told they will contact the other insured, State Farm, and ask for reimbursement.
It is over two weeks now and I still have not been able to get an adjuster to give me an assessment on my son's truck. I have sent emails and made calls to previous and current Wawanesa insurance adjusters and I am yet to get any straight answers from my own insurance. Emails have not been answered, except once, that they are trying to rectify Wawanesa's mistake.
Wawanesa was quick to pay out on the other party 100% at fault and I still can't get any answers. It does not appear that Wawanesa is looking out for me as their insured. Next step is to get legal representation and send letters of dissatisfaction up the chain of command at Wawanesa. For what it's worth, my son did not fair well during finals week due to the stress of this incident and follow-up service by Wawanesa. Terrible experience for any of us parents that send our kids off to good universities and think they will be safe and in good hands.

Well first off they got rid of 1 year policies to only 6 month policies which made my rates go up $500 a year. Their reason was because their profits were only 1% because of customers falsifying their yearly mileage on their vehicles, which is what I was told by a Wawanesa Rep. So I accept the increase because the rates are still cheaper. I did renewed twice with the 6 month policy. Now renewal is up again. My rates are going up another $200. With no tickets no adjustments to the policy. Zip zero. Nothing and my rates are going up. Now my rates are borderline with AAA. Might as well go with AAA at this point.

It use to be the older you and your car get the cheaper the rates are... not the case here. I've been with this company for years and happy at the rates I was paying for 2 cars. I've noticed rates were not dropping. Just earlier this year I get my renewal notice and I went from paying $1200 full coverage for the year to $900 for 6 months (full year payment no longer available). No accidents... no tickets. I called and spoke to a rep and their reason for the increase was due to how much the company has had to pay out on claims. Looks like I'm gonna have to take my business elsewhere!

I have had Wawanesa for 35 years. They have always been outstanding in customer service, low rates and I loved the 1 year policy. The last 2 years my rate for 12 months was $460, even though I had an accident 2 years ago. My new policy in July was only for 6 months and was over $300. It still gave the option of monthly payments on the statement, so I sent in the first month. Then I got a "past due" notice. I paid the balance asked for and emailed, asking why I was sent the late payment notice, and wanted to know why the 6 month policy and huge rate increase. The reply that I must set up the monthly payments by phone using my checking account, although nowhere in the billing statement did it state that when the payment options were listed. I got a "sorry for the inconvenience and misunderstanding" reply.
As for the 6 month policy instead of 12, and the huge rate increase, the reply was like others I read here: that Wawanesa wanted to be competitive with other insurance companies. That's B.S. I can't try to get other insurance for another year because of the accident on my record, but when that time is up, I will definitely be shopping for quotes from other companies. I did get a call back from a C.S. person who said to call her back and she would see if I was eligible for discounts, but they already give me a "persistency" discount, and with an accident, they won't give me any other discounts, so why bother?
I am SO disappointed in Wawanesa! In the past when I would periodically shop around for quotes, I was always told that "we can't compete with Wawanesa's low rates" but obviously that isn't the case now. Their CEO most likely makes an 8 figure salary, and they no longer want to be the best company. I hope everyone that has them goes elsewhere. Then they'll find out what their greed got them.

I had an accident where a driver swerved into the shoulder and hit me while I was stopped in the area between two parallel parked cars and the driver was speeding. Wawanesa claims adjuster said it was my fault. I showed them a diagram and a dash cam video. "No it's still your fault". Hispanic claims adjuster sided with hispanic driver to throw old white driver under the bus so insurance company could raise my rates. Although they assured me they would not raise me rates but did it anyway. This ploy allows them to keep you after they raise your rates because you now have an at fault accident on your record and can't get insurance with another company.

I knew I am a good driver, I never had any serious accident for 39 years I have driven. I just refresh again in early 2013, I stopped at the red light in Buena Park, California, a lady hit me on the back. I had full coverage insurance.
I called Wawanesa to take care the problem. They sent me to a body shop to repair. Later, they collected the money from the other insurance and paid me back the deductible. Now, my driving record shows I made this accident! All insurance companies gave me a bad number when I try to purchase insurance for my new truck. Just give me a date when something is due. I don't have time to have an ongoing correspondence with my insurance company, I don't need a pen pal. I have been with Wawanesa insurance for 20 years. I always felt it was a small company with good rates, But oh how times have changed at Wawanesa! Over the past two years I have noticed my premiums going up for no reason and when trying to call for info, I get transferred around to different people who always need to put me on hold. That's after waiting on hold for 10-20 mins to speak to a live person. I've been trying to delete one car and add another since yesterday. CS agent didn't know how to help me. After wasting 45 mins I asked for a supervisor, Of course none were available. I finally agreed to have a supervisor call me back. It's been over 26 hours and no one has called me. Hmmm. I just called them back and asked to speak to a manager.
I was speaking to a nice c.s. agent who was trying to help me. I said no, I want a manager, that I've been waiting for more than 26 hours. She tried to get one but they refused to answer the phone. She said they were in a meeting (maybe same one as yesterday). It's starting to scare me to have them as my insurance company. I think it's time to start looking for another insurance company! Since starting to write this review a supervisor actually just phoned me. What a nightmare trying to add another vehicle. Horrible customer service. I feel like I'm speaking to new hires with no insurance experience. I can see by reading the other reviews that most people seem to be complaining about the same issues I'm having.

It's interesting that all the positive reviews for Wawanesa Auto Insurance seemed to be dated two years and older. Everything recent has been one star, and for good reason. I've been a Wawanesa customer for over 15 years. I too am one of those whose policy saw a substantial increase. My increase is 20%. As usual, when I tried to contact Wawanesa by phone, I was put in queue and waited 25 minutes for someone to answer. Thank God for speaker phones. I've learned from past experience that selecting the call-back feature results in no call-back. I've waited as long as 90 minutes to speak with someone, so I guess I should be feeling lucky today. I asked about why my policy went to 6 months and was told the same thing; they want to be competitive. As to why the increase in amount, the rep just said that they had two rate increases last year.
When I said that I'd like to change the deductibles for comprehensive and collision, she told me in a very polite but not too veiled threat that changing the deductibles to higher amounts now would result in a mandatory inspection of my vehicles should I choose to lower them in the future. I didn't bother changing them today as I plan to shop around for another company. I did have a claim 4 years ago. The claims department was marginal, although I did finally get the repairs completed, but with numerous calls to the claims agent. They raised my rates then.

They are a great company. When I move to TX in a few years, it is going to be tough to change insurance companies. I've done my research, there are really no other companies that can compare to their quality of service, affordable rates and the ease of billing. I had 2 college age sons on my policy while out of state and they both had 1 claim and each had at least 1 moving violation, yet my premium is still lower than other companies.
Their claims process was smooth. Claims are mostly for our young drivers going to college out of state. The rep worked with our young drivers as if they were there holding their hand every step of the way. As a parent of a young driver, it is stressful enough knowing they are driving, but when they are in a different state where the weather could be snowy/icy, the stress increases. Having Wawanesa has helped reduced that stress level when it came to the time that a claim needed to be filed. In addition, they are one of a few carriers that have annual policies with very affordable rates. Too bad they only service CA, OR and WA.

I've had Wawanesa for 3 years - I joined because my family member had great experiences with them and talked wonders about them so I gave them a try. First year was great - competitive quotes, easy to contact online and quickly called me to finish up the policy. In less than 3 hours I was all setup. I had no issues and filed no claims my first year. Second year my rate went down for the full year premium by about 400 dollars so I was happy. Great company that rewarded its customer for not crashing or getting tickets. Now it's my third year and I get a renewal that is almost the same price as my 1-year policy except now for only 6 months. Not once have I ever crashed, nor had tickets, nor I filed a claim, AND I'm an experienced driver.
I decided to log on to my account to see if I could get a better price - the website was down for 2 days until I decided to call. 2 days later I call them and I'm placed on hold for AN HOUR before I can finally talk to a human. Customer service rep was nice but of no help. She said I qualified for the loyalty discount, the experienced driver discount, and she checked my profile and said I haven't had any tickets/accidents - which is all true. SO WHY ARE YOU GUYS RAISING MY PREMIUM BY ALMOST 50%?!? The rep said she couldn't do anything so I asked to speak to a supervisor and she said I would have to be put on hold and I agreed. Five minutes into being put on hold I realize that they should be begging me for my money not the other way around. I'm done with Wawanesa - poor rates, poor customer service, poor management. However they recently overhauled their system so their policies would be for a six month term instead of a 12 month term the way they have been for years. With the six month term came an increase. The new pricing was double, what I paid for 12 months of coverage in the past was now offered for a 6 month policy. Something has gone wrong and the customer service person at Wawanesa could not explain the reason for the increase.
My driving record has not changed, it's still clean with no citations and no accidents and I am still insuring the same two vehicles and I have not moved so why did my rates double. I have been a loyal Wawanesa customer for over 25 years. When I received my last auto insurance renewal, it was like they were dealing with a complete stranger. My rates almost doubled with no accidents or tickets. I was also informed that they were no longer writing 1 year policies, the main reason I went with them. I FINALLY got ahold of an agent, and with being on the phone for over an hour, got them to recalculate my rate to an almost a reasonable rate similar to what I had.
NOW I get my new Homeowners policy and it goes up $625.00 from it was last year! I have never filed a claim, I have remodeled my entire home a few years with updated electrical and plumbing, including fire sprinklers. The policy info had my entire home back to the original 1948 construction levels. I have now been on hold for the 3rd time for over an hour and I will be shopping other companies. I left call back info in their queue and never received a call back. I'm not sure what happened to this once fantastic company, but they are going to lose a once loyal customer. Bye bye Wawanesa. They will come to your location of your convenience to review the damage and claim. They are punctual with the appointment. You can use any automotive repair shop. Their response to your claim is fast and keep you informed of the progress. The claim representatives are patience to explain any questions.
Their coverage offered are the same with other insurance companies, i.e. roadside assistance, good driver discounts etc. Their website is friendly to use and if all fails, the customer service by phone works just as good. They offer multiple car discounts and payment plans options just as other insurance companies. With my experience, most insurance agent would not be able to offer a better rate once they discover Wawanesa is the insurance carrier. I have recommended this to my friends, and those have switched confirmed with my experience.

I've been with Wawanesa for 3 years. I signed on with them when I bought a new used car at the beginning of 2013. Just received my renewal policy for 2017 with a front page that said Exciting news for our policy holders!! Uh... I would disagree with that given they raised my insurance rate by over 40% from last year. I get costs go up but 40%!!! No accidents or claims in the three years I was with them. Always paid on time. No excuse for that type of increase. Just a heads up for people considering to get insurance with them. Part of what makes dealing with the pain of insurance bearable, is knowing when you're a good driver they aren't going to gauge you for no reason.
I've already done some research and found a new policy that will only increase what I'm paying for the year by $80. That I can live with. My suggestion: Shop around and if you find a reputable company that is offering a comparable price go with them so you aren't screwed in the future and have to waste time shopping around.

I have been with Wawanesa for over 20 years. I've had two claims in the past ten years and was treated with respect. I had to take the time to respond to silly comments about not paying insurance payments on time, and engine starts leaking after their car gets hit while parked. Hum, these agents are trained for false claims like that. It's people like that, that cause insurance to go up. TIP # 1 make your payments on time and # 2 tell the truth. PS make your life insurance (with any broker) payment late and see what happens. I will continue to recommend my family and friends.

Another person sideswiped me on 7/22/2016 so I took a picture of his license plate, insurance card and registration and promptly reported the claim. Mind you, I have been with Wawanesa Insurance for around 30 years and have never had a negative experience. The claims department called me and took down all the accident particulars. The adjuster called me a couple of days later and asked when it would be convenient for her to obtain my recorded statement (ahem, more like an interrogation).
Well, I had prior trouble and current trouble making payments online ever since they changed the policy numbers because all of the numbers do not fit into the box for online payments and the support team was unable to rectify my situation for online bill pay. And, you cannot use a debit card even though it says so at the bottom until you read the fine print that indicates you can only use a credit card. I paid my premium by credit card on 7/12; however, the adjuster supposedly had a coverage question because they allegedly received my payment late.
This makes zero sense because the payment cleared thru my credit card the same night. So she interrogates me... Do you usually pay your payments every 2-3 months, have you ever had a lapse in coverage, this kind of nonsense. I told her I was starting a new job on August 1st and could I take the car to the body shop prior to that and she said no. I then said what would have happened if my car wasn't driveable but she didn't care. I complained to the claims manager about the interrogation and told her it seemed like the adjuster was trying to catch me in a lie and she said that's exactly what she was trying to do.
I said really after almost 30 years? Unreal! The adjuster kept calling me about non-sensical things so I told her to quit calling me. I went ahead and took my car to the body shop and dropped it off and went to get a rental car. Come to find out, when I deleted and added a car more than a year ago (nothing to do with MY car), they accidentally deleted the rental coverage. Sooo... I ended up paying about $700 for the rental and they refused to pay me back more than $300!
Also, they had to pull the recording of my conversation to prove I didn't delete the coverage! Also, the guy that hit me has some sub-standard policy so I had to pay the deductible and may have to take him to small claims court to recover it... Even if I get a judgement, good luck with that! Lastly, whenever you call, they hardly ever answer and if you ask for a call back not to lose your place in line, they don't call back. I'm very disappointed that I would be treated like this and to have to put all this money out of my pocket was really annoying. Yes, they may have great rates, but is it really worth it? I'm beginning to think NOT.
Updated 10/7/2016: I have been with Wawanesa for almost 30 years; I just posted a review earlier this week about a claims issue. I was just informed yesterday that all their policies are going to a 6-month in lieu of a full year and it won't be possible to make monthly payments any longer. I was shocked to learn that my premium will be going up over $2,000 a year, more than double and nothing has changed with my vehicles. The woman I spoke to says it was a 'rate increase'... I'm sorry, but a simple rate increase would not be this high... going elsewhere for my car insurance after almost 30 years. It appears this company got popular and then VERY GREEDY!

He said he would deny my medical claim because I was arguing with him in regards to my car being fixed!!! LUCKILY, I had an attorney sitting next to me the entire conversation so they heard the entire call. We were on our way to an event and I was driving with my speaker phone on. Wawanesa inadvertently placed my property insurance payment of 148.00 onto an auto policy, thus cancelling the property insurance for non-payment. They made no notification of policy cancellation. I received an auto policy bill with changed policy number in feb. 2016, I immediately paid installment of 458.16, with future installments due June and September.
I received another changed auto policy, noted as 'rewrite' May 28, with payment needed of 232.96. I paid immediately, installments were due over next 8 months. I made no request for any changes. I then received notice on July 1 of non-payment for auto policy, so I called and was told about the cancellation of my property insurance, that a new policy would need to be written; and that Wawanesa had no record of my claimed payments.
I went to my bank to have the transactions researched. My bank has record of $458.16 received by Wawanesa on 2/29 and then returned to bill pay on May 28. Payment of $232.96 received by Wawanesa on 6/13 was refused and credited back to my on July 1. I decided to cancel all policies with Wawanesa for their lack of communication and poor billing. I notified them via email clearly stating all of these issues. Today (7/21), I received a bill for $119.44 for coverage provided of the cancelled auto policy. I have made no insurance claims to auto or property. They have refused and returned all payments made without notification and not in a timely manner. I should owe them nothing.

I was told this was approved with the condition while the payments were being made I would not be covered. I agreed to this. Well, after all payments were made I called and guess what? Yep, you guessed it...NO REINSTATEMENT. And furthermore there are no notes in their system to the above arrangements.
The rep got a snobby attitude and tried to lecture me on the fact that this is a bill I owed...uh no kidding. I didn't lie to her. Had I known they were gonna do me like that I would've paid for repairs to have my car pass smog and got insurance elsewhere and paid them later. Then she tried to lecture me on damaging my credit. I have been with them for about 17 years and this is the worst I have been treated. Yes the policies cost less but the service has decreased a 100 fold. After my year is up I will be moving my insurance unfortunately to a higher cost bracket but I need peace of mind. The woman just told me the supervisor will take care of it. My adjuster called me back usually within an hour of my call.
They also were great when I filed a homeowner claim almost 9 months after a flooding incident. They came out inspected the repairs, made copies of all the receipts (my husband did the repairs), shortly after we received a check well over the receipts amount, they explained they allowed for labor too. This company is a junk, yes they are very cheap compared to other company, but believe me, you get what you pay for, a cheap and scam service. Someone hit on my car while it was parked in a one way street curb (hit and run) while I was traveling in San Marcos-CA. I called them to make a claim right after I saw the damage and I told them what happened and give all the information they asked for. The lady told me to wait until one of their adjustors call me. First in their website they false advertise that the people their office representatives works from Mon - Friday from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, that's a joke and not true, they told me that they are open until 4:30 pm and after that you just get a message saying that they are closed, and if you try to reach anyone after 4:00 pm they are not in the office anymore.
Second, the guy who was designed to "help" as my adjustor called Tony was EXTREMELY RUDE unprofessional (maybe because I have an accent), he treated like trash, like he was doing me a favor. He told me he was sending an estimator, was kind fast. This guy (the estimator) came to my house and I showed him everything happened to my car, I opened the hood and I showed him all the fluid from my steering power all over my engine. He took few pics with his little camera and wished me good luck. The day after, Tony called me and told me to take my car to a body shop, but I told him my car was not driving at all. He told me to not worry about it because they would take care of it (again, extremely rude).
I took my car to the body shop and then I got the check 4 days later, then my nightmare started. My body shop guy finished his job after a week and half and I took my car to my mechanic who gave then an estimate, so they sent the estimator again who according to my mechanic stayed there for 3 min and before he started check the car, he already told him that it was not the part of the accident so my mechanic told him that how could he state that without even look at my car and he just took few more pics and left. So, this estimator took 3 days to send the adjustor my paperwork, I was calling this adjustor called Tony everyday since he never called me to keep me updated or to at least apologize for his incompetence. He was always RUDE every time I called to see if he had any updates. And one day he called me and told me very rude "if I have any news, I call you. Do you understand, I will call you. "
I have all our conversations recorded on my phone, including one that he insinuates clearly that if I had taken my car to one of their shops it would be faster. REALLY??? Then finally they denied to fix my car and one of the services supervisor called Willian, left a super rude message saying that they wont pay in any circumstance to fix my car because based in the pictures I was not saying the truth (he basically called me a liar in a kind way). I've tried to call them after that message and they never answered the phone when I called. I've called them 30 times and I left messages to 3 different people, they are cowards and refuse to even answer my calls. They know my number and they refuse to let me even argue about their decision. Every time I call, the representatives already know with who I want to talk.
THEY TREATED ME LIKE TRASH, THEY MADE MY BLOOD PRESSURE GOES UP, THEY TURNED MY LIFE INTO A NIGHTMARE AND SO STRESSFUL. Please be aware about this company. They don't care about their customers and they treat you like you are begging for a favor. What's absolutely not the case since I pay my bill every single month! They are criminals and scammers.

They sent two or 3 estimators, inspectors, checked and took photo's of the damages to our bathroom and kitchen then told us they would be in touch. Month after month, delays after delays, the aggravation was building. We had to threaten them with a legal lawsuit if they weren't going to start the immediate and urgent renovation work soon.
We had black mold building and we couldn't use our bathroom for months. The most aggravating experience ever. Then I had a verbal and e-mail argument with this horses ass rep. I had Wawanesa years ago before I moved out of the state and country and was always pleased with them. When I moved back, I decided to obtain car insurance with them again. However, at the time I did sign back up with them, I wanted to know why they didn't have automatic withdrawal from my bank as most companies in this day and age do. They told me they are working on it. This was exactly a year ago.
I noticed I had not received a statement from them, so last week I started calling them. And calling, and calling, and doing nothing but being put on hold for 20 minutes plus which I refuse to do more than this length of time. At one point on their phone line, they offered to call me back, but their phone wasn't working properly and I wasn't able to leave a message as to why I was calling. They actually did call me back 2 hours later, but unfortunately, I am unable to take phone calls at my job; I did call them back putting in the extension I was given, but lo and behold, I was still holding forever. So here I am trying to get ahold of them again, as I am afraid my policy may lapse. And of course there still is no auto withdrawal through my bank either which makes it so much more convenient. I am through with Wawanesa. I mean how many times do you have to keep calling a company?? Absolutely ridiculous.

First, it took 3 days to get a hold of the person taking care of our case and they wanted my boyfriend to pay for the towing and junkyard storage fees just because our accident happened out of town.
They finally agreed to pay for the towing but that took for my boyfriend to talk to 3 different people. In the meantime the charges on the storage went up and they still made him pay it out of pocket. Their response was "we will try to reimburse you for that." First, if we had known that ahead of time we would have asked the towing company to take our car somewhere closer. Also why does it take for us to talk to 3 people to even get someone to answer our questions and help us. Like I said we have been with Wawanesa for 15 years and their service has gone from bad to worse. Wawanesa was the lowest premium insurance company for many years but last year they increased their rate by 50% across the board. Now they are still looking for every opportunity to increase the price for individual policy holder. For example: if you say one thing (what if scenario) to find out if the rate would be lower, they will nail you with increased rate because you did not use the right word. Then you have to argue saying that you were just checking using what if scenario to see if I can lower the rate (my actual situation is not that) but it looks like the rate is going to increase, so I don't want the change.
Representative would insist (with angry tone) saying that you said, "blah blah", so we must quote you accordingly and your rate will go up by $ (whatever amount they want). Unbelievable!!! We find out the check was altered and cashed by someone else. Wawanesa instead of checking into, just told us "have your bank cover it." They never investigated their departments for fraud. Basically said are out the money.

I was turning left and opposite side had a red light so cars were all stop and they wave me to make my turn so I did. There was a 4th car coming on the lane that was suppose to turn right but she didn't; she just wanted to pass all the cars on the red light so she t-bone me in the right back side and then ran away and people start chasing her so she came back. She did not have a driver license and police said it was my fault 'cause I turn in front of her which I didn't since she had just pulled over from the previous exit. I had over 4 witness including people who saw her raining away and all, and Wawanesa call me to get my statement and to the name and phone number of all my witness, and I was told they will let me know when a decision is made. Car was fixed and Wawanesa paid of the claim but never really investigated nor they call any of the witnesses and after 4 month not hearing from them I call and call them that I finally got a call and was told that I was found guilty and no explanation about the investigation or anything. My guess they didn't investigate anything.

Been a customer for over 10 years, with one claim on my wife's car from a driver who fell asleep. Last month my truck was hit while parked on the street. They in turn send out a appraiser who sends me a copy. The adjuster calls to say that they aren't going to pay for all everything. I call and leave messages... nothing. After a month of crap, I get a phone call from their fraud investigator that my claim has been sent to him. Remember I am THEIR customer and THEIR estimator made the estimate. Subsequently, I have already fixed it myself and have the bill. After a recorded conversation asking questions like I was a criminal, I got them to agree to pay half of what THEIR estimate was and they won't budge. So I paid the deductible, and half of my repairs. Useless insurance company. Dirty lowdown filthy company.

I was involved in a car accident where the other party was at fault. My insurance Wawanesa sent me to get my car appraised at a shop they work with. the appraisal came very low, compared to the one I have gotten from the dealer. I expected Wawanesa to pay me the higher amount, but instead they were only willing to pay what their appraiser estimated, and nothing more. They insisted I could take my car anywhere I wanted, and they would probably pay a supplemental fee to the shop doing the work, but I wanted to keep the money, and not get the car fix. That is where I have a problem, because they are only willing to pay me what the lower estimates reads, although the repairs would cost a lot more. This is my car, and my money. I feel they are stealing from me.

I have been given partial denial for repairs on my vehicle that are the result of indirect damage from a car accident on 3/29/11. The damaged part on my car is the engine control module, which in Mitsubishi's, is not a part that usually ever has to be replaced. I have spoken to all 12 Southern California Mitsubishi dealerships from San Diego all the way up to Long Beach, and not one had sold one of these parts in more than two years, if ever. They also all say that this is a very reliable part in an eclipse, but that the violent jolt of the impact can cause serious damage in computer parts like these, and that there is no way that the damage was a coincidence.
The adjuster is saying that it is a coincidence that the control module was damaged at the time of the accident, and that it was just mechanical failure. He actually told me on the phone that, "we shouldn't have to pay for that, it's expensive!" It took me 25 days from the first and last time that I spoke to my first adjuster John ** to get a hold of anyone at Wawanesa regarding my claim, no one would even return my messages. My car has been sitting in the shop in pieces for 20 days, in pieces just sitting there. It took 13 days of the car sitting in pieces to even get the first partial denial. The manager of the collision center that my car is at has taken over handling my claim on their end, and completely backs me up. The adjuster says that he is denying this repair "based on my opinion, and my opinion is final unless you decide to take it to the next level."
Well, I am a licensed insurance agent working for Farmers Insurance, and I know my rights, and have proceeded to take this matter to the next level because this has definitely reached bad faith claim status. All that I asked was to be treated fairly and have my car restored to the same condition it was before the accident, which is my right as stated in my Wawanesa Policy. Neither has happened with this company, and I am very sorry I hadn't switched to Farmers before this accident, because none of this would be happening right now.
