I cancelled this insurance online before the policy renewed and it showed canceled. A week later, they sent me a email saying they charged my credit card for another month. I called to dispute the charge but they refused to refund the money saying they did not get the cancellation. Stay away from them!

This is the worst company for dental on the planet. First I had a dental plan. They denied everything even though I had cracked tooth. I had to pay out-of-pocket and pay for the plan. Then being on Medicare, you’re supposed to get $500 a year dental work. I submitted the claim with all of the paperwork required, which was a lot of work in April. I submitted it by mail, never heard anything back. I emailed them three times. No response. I’ve called multiple times, you basically just stay on hold and you don’t get a straight answer. Now we’re going into August with no reply. What a scam.

I had heard from my dentist that United Healthcare took this action frequently but never thought as a 4+ year customer I would have my dental insurance cancelled. Apparently, the credit card I used had been changed but I never received a notice from United that there was an issue. I checked and had not received an email or phone call from United. United did not have any letter notice in my file. While I contacted United One to get reinstated, they refused. While initially frustrated, it turns out there were several other options available for dental insurance that provided better coverage at a lower cost. Poor customer service never a good practice.

Updated on 06/30/2023: Rec'd dental service that I paid $15,000+ for out of pocket. Submitted a claim for partial reimbursement a few months later(well within the allowable time frame). Never heard back from UHC Dental. I called a few months after submitting my claim to find out the status, and the rep was not able to give me any info. A few more months go by, and still no contact from UHC Dental, so I call again. Rep said she would look into it + get back to me. Another couple months and still no word from UHC Dental, so I call again. This time I am told that the codes on the Doctor's invoices were invalid, but they do show a payout was made - but can't tell me who they paid!
I called the Doctors' office, and neither they nor I have received any payment from UHC Dental. SO...I call again, and this time I am asked to have the Doctor send in a narrative of the procedures and copies of the x-rays. That info was submitted within a week of the request. Today I received the ONLY correspondence from UHC -- a letter of denial because "Claim was submitted after the time limit"!!! Madder than a hornet, I called + was told again a payout was made but they don't know who got paid. A supervisor told me my only recourse is to file an appeal. It has been a year and a half since I paid over $15,000 for my dental work, and not a penny from UHC Dental. Instead I have to file an appeal and wait another 60 days. NOT a good company to do business with.
Original Review: I've been trying to get compensated for dental work I had done (I paid out of pocket since it was an emergency) for almost a year. After filing the claim, I have not heard back from UHC Dental at all. I have called them 3 times, and still do not have any determination or reimbursement. If you have a choice, STAY AWAY FROM UHC Dental.

We have United Healthcare Medicare Advantage through AARP. The healthcare portion has been mostly ok although it is often difficult to get doctors who accept this insurance. The dental coverage is another matter. They make it very difficult to get to the right group to file a claim, once filed it is very difficult to follow up on status. I was denied coverage for a complicated filling that avoided a crown. Although this seemed like a responsible and less costly approach it was denied. I have been sending in information to various groups for months on this. Each time I think I'm getting closed to resolution, I am told that the information need to be sent somewhere else. The final letter received said that they were not acting on my case because they couldn't verify my coverage, despite attaching copies of my insurance cards. They have won. I give up as it is too frustrating. This is exactly the response their system is designed to achieve!

I have spent the last 1.15 hours trying to find a dentist through UHC. I called two dentists from the "Find Care" database. Then I called UHC and they referred me to 3 more. Then I called them back again and UHC gave me three more referrals. NONE OF THESE DENTISTS TAKE UHC Medicare Advantage. One of the reasons I joined this insurance is because of the dental benefit and now I find out they have a whole database of dentists who do not even take the coverage. I am just starting with the service and I wonder what other new discoveries I will make.

My wife just had a routine dental cleaning appointment. The very last part of any dental cleaning is topical application of fluoride varnish (feels like same cleaning you do twice a day using electrical toothbrush). Payment was denied because of age? Are we talking about age discrimination here? Does she suppose to leave the dentist without that final part of a very straightforward and simple procedure? Does it mean after certain age you receive incomplete service because of your age? How in the world she could even be aware of those details? Again: we are talking about teeth cleaning with electric toothbrush after routine dental cleaning which took about a minute or so? Something is just not right!

I have had this insurance for several years through my work. I sure do wish that I had kept my previous insurance, even if I paid more for private insurance. I end up paying at every cleaning and checkup because this insurance pays for barely anything at all that goes along with cleanings and preventative care. Last October, I had a large filling fall out. My dentist said that it was too large to refill with a filling, because there was not enough tooth left to hold, and I would have lost the tooth unless I did a crown. Well, this horrible insurance would not cover any of it and said that they would only cover a composite filling which would not have been possible. It is sickening that this is acceptable and legal. This is literally the only reason for me to have dental insurance, and they are completely worthless. What a shady, thieving company. Do not recommend.

This is the worst dental insurance I have ever had and I will never buy it again. I have never had trouble getting approval to get a crown and all they have done since the start of the process in May of 2022 is give me the run around. Every time I call to follow up on approval, they say they did not receive the x-ray, narratives, etc. My dentist sent it multiple time and each time you call the staff is so discombobulated that no one knows what is going on and can't find anything. I finally received notice in August 2022 that my claim was denied as it was necessary.
I tried to file an appeal and was told I didn't need to as they were missing the x-ray (once again) and all of the pieces are there they just have to find them. Each time I called to follow up they said they did not have the x-ray or the narrative or this and that, and I felt it was done intentionally to discourage and delay paying for the crown. After another review it was declined again. I haven't chewed on the side of my mouth that needs the crown as my dentist said the tooth may fracture and then it would have to be pulled. I will be filing a complaint with the Insurance Commissioner regarding their insurance practices.

This review is for healthcare not Dental. My incident started in June of this year, 2022. My primary Dr referred me to another Dr, ended up that Dr wanted a CT scan of my thyroid, which was done in June. Next appt was in July, and then one in August. On the first hospital visit to get these tests done, I was told I had to pay $100.00 deductible, but if I paid it that day they would discount it to $87.00, so I paid it right then. Never heard anything at all from any of the three tests... no bills, no EOB, no nothing until a few days ago.
Hospital (IN-NETWORK) called and said I owe (apx) $400.00 from those 3 tests...I HAD NO IDEA. Anyway, I called UHC, rep (Alley) said it was already paid in full by my plan. She put me on hold & tried to reach local rep at hosp. That rep was out to lunch. Alley said she left her a VM. Nothing resolved. I had to call UHC again.
That rep said, "Oh no, you owe it". So she put me on hold to call local hosp again. Held for apx 10 min. Nothing resolved again. I called local hosp next day & rep said UHC did not call them at all, so I held all that time for NOTHING!! Hosp ins dept said, "Don't pay that, they will pull original EOB," so wait for another call from them. I'm still waiting. Also, I want to let people know that every time you call UHC, calls go overseas. You can barely understand them, and have to repeat over & over. UHC is the WORST ins. co. EVER!! I will be switching!! We are seniors & pay a lot for premiums. End result is STAY AWAY from UHC. I would give them a rating of -5 if I could.

While UHC Medicare Advantage is fair for medical issues, their Dental Program is TERRIBLE. They denied claims to have a tooth evaluated and sent me to a local shopping center dentist for the extraction, then denied second opinions and visits to determine next steps. Then informed me I had exhausted my benefits before anything further could be done. I changed to Delta Dental just to get rid of UHC Dental. SENIORS BEWARE. UHC blames it on "coding errors". I blame it on the DENTAL DIVISION of UHC. Please report them to your local Medicare office.

We have a United Health Care AARP Medicare advantage plan with dental and vision benefits printed right on the face of the card. We talked with an agent for United Health care telling them that we had some dental work, a root canal and crown, that had to be done and asked if we should purchase a rider to ensure the coverage. Multiple times we were told no, that we had the best coverage offered and that the work would be covered. WRONG. The truth is that even with this coverage you need to purchase a separate dental package. This was a $1500.00 lesson we learned and are passing it along in hopes you will not have to pay the same tuition for the lesson. I now have an additional policy through Delta Dental for Veterans and it has provided the extra coverage we need. Just remember that old saying, "Buyer beware. Just because they print it on the face of the card does not mean they will deliver."

Oct 30, 2020 Called customer service about letter from United Healthcare stating dental claim denied. Total time on phone was 90 minutes. Female rep (she stated her name however due to her broken English I couldn’t understand what she said, which I now regret not getting it for my records) kept putting me on hold, saying she’s checking, couldn’t find record of it probably because it’s too new, told her letter dated 10/20/20, I received it 10/30/20. She verified I have dental platinum rider.
After an hour of on and off on hold she said she’ll try to connect with someone in dental department. What a concept! Then she said service denied because exam is allowed only once in 36 months. Told her I have cancer and chemotherapy weakened my teeth causing a molar to crack and break off near gum line. She asked why dentist did exam but no treatment, told her no dentist would perform treatment without an exam to assess condition of tooth. 30 more minutes went by with her saying she’s still trying to connect with someone who could answer, then said I have to appeal the denial, about that time a 2nd female came on the phone but I couldn’t hear what she was saying so asked her to say again then phone connection ended. Will definitely appeal this.

I just spent over an hour speaking to a customer representative at United Healthcare. I thought I had 2 very simple questions about the Dental Platinum plan rider that I needed answered in order to decide whether to purchase the rider or not. I went online first to find a list of in-network dentists and then to use their cost calculator. The cost calculator was not working. So I decided to call one of the dentists on the lists. Was immediately told that they do not participate. I'm not absolutely sure that they understood the insurance plan. They didn't seem to have heard about it. But when I mentioned United Healthcare and Medicare they said they don't participate. I then decided to call UHC and was assisted by a very courteous representative. But she could not answer my questions.
I would have been fine if she told me that she was unable to answer my questions and transfer me to somebody else. Instead, she kept reading from a script that did not even come close to answering my questions. She continued to provide general information. This went on for over 30 minutes. I finally told her that it seemed she was not able to assist me and I requested a supervisor. I was placed on hold. She did check in every 2 minutes for the first 10 minutes and then she never came back. I waited another 10 minutes. She never hung up on her end.
I heard chatter but received no response when I talked into the phone. I finally hung up. I wasted over 3 hours including my research on-line without an answer to my 2 questions. BTW, my 2 questions: 1. Can they help me with the cost calculator and 2. What am I communicating to dentists when I call to confirm if they still participate in the plan. Do I say Dental Platinum or UHC Dental Platinum or UHC Medicare Dental Platinum? The original representative I spoke to kept asking if I wanted to add the rider. After this experience, my answer is definitely, no!

My dentist gave me antibiotics to get rid of the infection. Which was imperative as I had a total knee replacement 3 months prior.
So I called my insurance company and they sent over a list of oral surgeons, which at first glance looked lengthy but in reality has the same names over and over at different locations. There were a total of 5 oral surgeons in network. I called every one of them only to be told they do not have oral surgeons at their practice!! I phoned back United Health Care and a SUPERVISOR, who was very nice, tried finding me an oral surgeon in network for 2 weeks. At the time I was 28 & I was really focused on fixing the issues in the front top of my mouth. I went to a dentist that was in UHCD to only be told the work I needed was not covered. I needed several teeth pulled & was charged $200 each, I needed a root canal but most importantly I needed implants but those I couldn't afford so they suggested a bridge in the front. It’s 4 teeth & then I have a cap on the 5th. When they checked what was covered they told me nothing would be covered & I would have to pay out of pocket. $6500 later on my care credit card I’m still trying to pay it off. I’m unable to chew properly & I’m too afraid to talk because my front teeth are so loose. Care credit won’t increase my limit because I’m still trying to pay off the work I had 7 years ago. I phoned the insurance and first was told his policy was cancelled and he had no insurance. Not true as it was being paid every month and I had proof. So they backed down on that and transferred me. But that was lie #1. Next person told me the reason they denied was because they hadn't gotten x-rays from dentist. I told them he sent them 3 times. Then the response I got was that they must be unreadable. Again lie #2 and #3.
Finally I was told that the crowns were not medically necessary. At this point I have a copy of the x-rays. I can see 2 nubs where the before photo was. His fillings had come out and there was not enough to refill so he needed crowns. These are 2 front upper teeth. So that was lie #4. This phone call took over 2 hours. I had planing and scaling ("deep cleaning") of some teeth. United Healthcare says that they will not pay anything toward my post-deep-cleaning checkup because it was less than 90 days after the deep cleaning. They say that this wait period varies by insurance provider, which suggests that, for some insurance companies, my dentist was all right to wait nearly two months instead of 90 days and suggests that waiting two months or 90 days ought to depend on the professional opinion of the dentist rather than the medical claims adjusters.
On the phone, UHC told me to to look at the EOB for the denied claim but they were surprised that the phone number provided for requesting an appeal form (not to make the appeal, but just to get the form so that we modern people can enjoy the comfort of writing a letter and mailing it to a PO box) was not a number intended for dental issues. They had no alternative phone number; they suggested handwriting a letter and mailing it to the PO box in SLC, UT. I have this insurance through my company. My conclusion: In the last year I have had to spend too much time on the phone and web with United Healthcare (dental and medical and vision). It may have been a pennywise mistake for my company to have switched.

This dental plan is horrible. They don't cover what they say they do. They send you around and around in circles trying to get you to just give up when they tell you they won't cover a basic filling when your plan says no waiting period. They can't tell you where in the policy things are (because it isn't there), I read the policy from cover to cover. Horrible customer service, incompetent employees. Ridiculous wait times to even attempt to talk to a customer service representative. I got transferred 8 times over two days and 6 hours of phone calls. Got hung up on twice by their incompetent and useless employees.

I had this company when I lived in Florida, and I had no problems. Then I moved to California. My primary is pretty good, but trying to get other services is close to impossible. I have received incorrect info from company representatives and providers alike. And hope nothing needs to be done immediately. I’m trying to get a tooth extracted. I can’t even tell you all they put me through. First, they sent me to a dentist not on my plan. Got to a dentist, and got a referral. Won’t work. The provider was supposed to send some kind of referral, and didn't. Also, when I called the place they referred me to, it was the same place I had been to before that didn’t take my plan. Now they say it was because I was needed to be assigned an office. This goes on and on. Meanwhile, I have an infected tooth that needs to come out. But it doesn’t hurt so it’s not an emergency. Can’t wait until open enrollment when I can dump this company.

Called UHC and found out they paid dentist more than I was charged. Rep was unable to explain why. Called dentist who said I would have to come in so she could explain why I now owed more than I was originally charged. Sounds like fraud to me. Why would UHC send dentist more money than I was charged? Charges from dentist I paid on day of service are there regular fees for service I received. Also $500 only covers x-rays and a cleaning. I received a bill from my dentist for $124 after United Healthcare Dental paid their share. The website shows the same coverage percentages for in network and out of network providers. I wrongly assumed the amounts covered for basic services (cleaning, x-rays and exam) would be comparable. I called United customer service and they said the percentages on the website were based on the amounts United covers, not the amounts billed by the dentist.
It would be very helpful to those of us on a fixed income if we had honest, easy to understand coverage information before we attempt to use the insurance. There would be no way to tell how much United would cover unless they have “codes.” When I called the dentist, they stated they can’t tell me either until they submit the relevant information and codes to United. Unfortunately, the in network dentist I used to go to was terrible. My options are to pay much more each month for better coverage, drive 40 miles and see if I can find a decent dentist in network, or pay more for dental services. Like most health insurance in the US, if you are poor, you are screwed.

My doctor office and I talked with them too many times but they are keep denying. My husband is also struggling with his teeth. Doctor sent pre-approval to deep cleaning for him. The quote was just around $650 but this insurance said, my husband does not need deep cleaning because his teeth is very bad so instead of doing treatment just extract his all teeth. I could not imagine how can person who is on his 50s live without his teeth. We cannot afford for all new teeth. Of course insurance does not cover for new teeth at all. My issue began in March of 2018 when a bottom tooth broke after being filled. So my dentist requested a crown since the tooth is not able to be filled and a crown was necessary. This crown was denied 5 times and each time United Healthcare had a new reason. First time was a pre-authorization which was denied due to not enough information submitted for a root canal, which as I told the representative when I called I did not need a root canal only the crown. So the dentist office submitted another pre-authorization.
Second denial was because not enough cavity, cavity? Is what I told the representative on the second call, there will be no cavity in the images since my tooth was cleaned of cavity filled, and now broke. The representative now suggests I submit an appeal which I did. The response again was not enough cavity, which again I called to explain for a 3rd time. So I submit a second appeal, once more it is denied this time stating it was medically unnecessary, and they went further and told me the dentist told them it wasn't necessary.
Again I call United Healthcare to discuss this false information, the representative this time tells me she doesn't understand why I am being denied since I am covered for crowns. She goes further and tells me she will call my dentist's office to make sure they have what is needed on the next pre-authorization. She lets me know that as long as it is noted the crown is medically necessary and with details there should be no problem. Well, she was wrong. Here I am in June, this started in March, my tooth can break again at any time, I can't even chew on my right side without risking the tooth breaking more. Their response today, June 14th is Vague Information, denied again.
Something needs to be done regarding this company, they have lied and acted without morals or conscience regarding their patient's well being. Don't tell me it is not necessary to be able to chew without breaking your teeth even more being made to chew only on one side. And they are not only corrupt in the dental section, it goes into regular treatment by doctors where they are just as bad in general healthcare with doctors who act as if they don't have the time or care to treat you. Please look into this corrupt company.

I had a problem tooth. After three fillings it was more filling than tooth, and so sensitive that they had to split each operation into two sessions. The root was semi-exposed and eating and drinking hurt. My dentist and I tried everything to save the tooth, but nothing seemed to work. Eventually he suggested a crown to save it and to lessen the pain. I figured that since I was "lucky" enough to have insurance that covered crowns, I would be able to afford it. The crown worked perfectly and the pain vanished. I could eat and go to the dentist for cleanings without agony. Couldn't believe it.
Of course, United Healthcare denied the claim, stating that the extreme pain I had been in was not a justifiable reason to put in the crown. Fillings hadn't worked, but whatever soulless automaton makes the case and appeal decisions was more interested in stealing my money every month in return for nothing. They told me I was approved for just a filling even though the tooth was over 50% filling already, and that hadn't solved the problem. I count my lucky stars that my dentist was an honest enough person to finance the crown where my insurance wouldn't. He paid out of pocket -- at a higher amount than United -- to make sure I could afford the life-changing operation. The office staff there informed me that United is the only insurance company that denies procedures in these circumstances. The ONLY one.
Everything worked out, but United proved themselves to me as a cheap, uncaring company that would rather their clients live with debilitating pain than approve a simple crown I already more than paid for monthly. I'm stuck with them because of my employer, but if you have the ability, avoid United at all costs. They will abandon you when you need them the most.

Sure enough in July 2017 when I brought my daughters for a routine teeth cleaning to my medical dentist, I was told by my dentist that she could not assist my daughters, because they were under United Health Care coverage!!! Medical told me to contact United and ask them to send me a letter saying that I did not have any coverage with them. In Sept 2017 I called their customer service and they told me I would receive the letter in 14 business days: NOT TRUE. I called again in Nov and Dec 2017: Now they could not find any info about my daughters!
Called back on Jan 18 2018: finally one rep was able to find my records and she told me that the lady in Sept 2017 did in reality send a letter saying that the policy was not valid, but she sent it to the Social Services in Chatsworth, Ca??? (I specifically asked that lady to send the letter to my house in Canoga Park.) Now a new lady (Linda) in Feb 18 tells me that I would receive another letter, this time at my house in Canoga Park in 14 business days. 3 weeks went by: I called again and asked for Linda: nobody knew about a Linda??? A new rep tells me that United can't send me a letter stating that the policy is not effective because I never got any benefits in first place from United??? When I went to my employee’s portal to make my selection, I found what I wanted, clicked it and confirmed it. I feel that this company is very similar to all other companies with basic coverage. You get two covered cleanings a year but have to pay a lot out of pocket for anything else that is needed.
If possible, insurance companies should try and cover more than just the basic dental procedures such as cleanings since most Americans need more than just a cleaning. Cover needed fillings, crowns, etc. especially if poor mouth hygiene leads to other health issues, dental insurance needs to cover more. Also, the dental industry needs to make dental work much more affordable. There are middle-class families that cannot afford to get dental work done because of inflated prices. Something needs to be done and insurance companies are trying but to keep up with inflated dental costs and unnecessary high prices is hard and pretty much impossible. Overall, insurance companies are not at fault and are offering insurance coverage that seems to be the norm amongst most insurances. It's the dental industry itself that needs to change.
