How does Shelter auto insurance work?

If you're interested in Shelter auto insurance, you can search for agents in your area on its website. The company offers both full and partial coverage policies at pretty standard rates. Shelter’s insurance options include:

  • Liability – bodily injury: Covers medical bills and court fees for those involved in an at-fault accident.
  • Liability – property damage: Pays to replace or repair any property you damage in your vehicle.
  • Roadside assistance: Includes fuel, flat tire, lockout, battery jump-start and towing services.
  • New car replacement: If your car is new and totaled in an accident, Shelter will replace it with the same make and model.

Here are some optional coverages you can add with Shelter:

  • Collision: Covers the repair and replacement of your car after an accident whether or not you’re at fault.
  • Comprehensive: Pays for the repair or replacement of your car if it's broken due to something other than a collision, like fire, flood or hail.
  • Medical payments: Covers medical treatment fees for injuries from a covered loss.
  • Personal injury protection: Covers loss of income and other expenses if you're unable to work due to an injury related to a covered accident.
  • Uninsured motorist – bodily injury: If you get in an accident with someone who doesn’t have insurance, this covers your medical fees and other expenses.
  • Uninsured motorist – property damage: Pays the costs of repairs or replacement if you're in an accident with an uninsured person who’s at fault.
  • Rental reimbursement: Covers the cost of a rental car while yours is out of commission due to an accident.
  • Accidental death: Provides payment in the event of accidental death of you or your spouse due to an auto incident.
  • Disability income: If you're injured in a car accident and can’t return to work, this coverage provides a weekly stipend for up to a year.
  • Gap insurance: If your financed car is totaled in an accident, this covers what you still owe.
  • Loss of use: Pays for putting your car in the shop after an accident.

You can make payments over the phone, online or through the mail. Shelter offers multipayment installment plans, as well.

Shelter auto insurance quotes and rates

Shelter offers reasonable prices, adequate coverage and 24/7 customer service. We used Shelter's online form to generate a quote for a driver in their mid-20s looking for basic coverage and several add-ons, like uninsured motorist and property damage insurance. The quote was for $239.61 per month.

The average cost of Shelter’s auto insurance is around $239 to $390 a month per person, but its several discounts can bring down your rate significantly. These discounts include:

I switched to Shelter two months ago because they gave me a good quote for both auto and homeowners. I just purchased my house. And then I had a car accident March 9. Shelter sent me a letter stating that my auto policy was being cancelled effective March 30. When I called to inquire about it, I was informed that my home owners insurance was also set to cancel on April 19. But I had not received anything regarding an issue with my homeowner’s policy. They then sent me another letter stating that I had requested the cancellation for the auto policy. I had made several phone calls to my local agent to try and get this resolved. And left voicemail. But did not get a call back. I’m very frustrated with Shelter. It has been a waste of time and I definitely would not recommend them! Very poor customer service.

Don't use this insurance company, my agent Jeff ** was very deceptive on just how much my monthly bill was, he lied. Never sent me my actual policy, I called Progressive & he lied about my entire policy.... attached screenshots of how he double billed me. After asking around I'm not the only person he's done this to.

I was with them for over 20 years. I needed insurance for my daughter and they wanted to hike our rates on all our vehicles. They wouldn't work with us at all. So, we switched to Progressive, which gave us much lower rates. A couple of months later, we got a bill for $110 because they had adjusted our rates on a policy that had already been paid.

This is February 26, 2024. My is broke down. I literally starting calling this company at 8:30 a.m. to just get my car towed. I started with contacting 1-800 Shelter..the lady did not speak English..I asked her to transfer me to someone that spoke English.. she refused to do that.. Then had to deal with 2 other agents with Shelter by the name of Cindy from the Sellersburg, IN area to another agent by the name of Angie..both agents behave as though they are 2 year olds. I asked Angie and Cindy if they would please get a towing company that was located in Salem, IN, they both said no, so a towing company did not come to pick up my car for a total of 5 hours.

Finally got into contact with Nick **, which is their corporate supervisor and told him that this was even mentally affecting my 6 year old daughter.. His response was oh. Get real!!! In my opinion Shelter Car Insurance Company is a horrific company for anyone single mother with children with their car being broke down..I do not recommend this company to anyone that wishes to stay sane.

      Reviewed Aug. 3, 2023

We have had Shelter Insurance for home, auto and some personal insurance for 30 years. We have had fair success with small claims but until a May 7th severe hail storm no experience with major claims. It is now 3 months since the storm and we have received only a partial check for less than 1/3 of the total estimate from their recommended contractor. The contractor has been very patient but requires a 50% down payment to order products for the repairs. The agent has been hard to reach and the claims estimator says he mailed a supplemental check 2 weeks ago but it has not been received. He now says he has to cancel the check and issue a new check.

Why has this taken this long? We all continue to blame it on COVID but that excuse doesn’t mean squat. This is a general malaise that has set in throughout the country and the only recourse consumers have is to go public and complain in a review and hope other read it and stay away from this type of company. I am retired and had recent heart surgery and can’t do the repairs even though I have the experience and knowledge. We will certainly get different insurance after this is done. Homeowners, auto, renter insurance for our son at college and an additional life savings account for his future go to another company we hope soon.

So I started a claim back in February. We had a bad storm so I had hail damage real bad totaling in my car. I made the claim, went to get my appraisal and never heard back from them. Here it is June 18. For the last two weeks I’ve been calling the claims adjuster assigned. Never got a response. Call the one 800 number, spoke to a lady that gave me her supervisor number Jacob ** and he was just rude when I called him. He was like, "Yeah have. You can’t. What do you want?" after I told him I'm trying to see was going on and check the status of my claim. I’ve got three different totals amounts that they were going to pay for my car. One came out to 7000 then five 5800. Now it’s down to 4700 and he still can’t give me information. He telling me let him look into it, he will call me back just to get me off the phone while he’s eating!

My SL500 was hit parked, backed into across my passenger side. Here are some numbers you should keep in mind. These are the approved rates that they told me they can approve for work to be done on my car. Body work $56 an hour. Paint $56 an hour. Mechanical $85 an hour. Once you have your car checked out at a shop the actual cost will not ad up. If you own a Mercedes they will not adhere to the standards Mercedes strongly recommend that the shop is certified by Mercedes. The cost that I paid out of pocket to have my car repaired properly was over $1200, and they only paid out $560 for diminished value.

It was my choice to have the work done at that rate, but I was not willing to have my car repaired at a shop that worked at the rates they are will to pay. If you have a premium car that you truly love this company will not help you get it back into shape as it should be. I bought my car in flawless condition and they wanted to offer substandard compensation for repairs.
