How does Shelter auto insurance work?

If you're interested in Shelter auto insurance, you can search for agents in your area on its website. The company offers both full and partial coverage policies at pretty standard rates. Shelter’s insurance options include:

  • Liability – bodily injury: Covers medical bills and court fees for those involved in an at-fault accident.
  • Liability – property damage: Pays to replace or repair any property you damage in your vehicle.
  • Roadside assistance: Includes fuel, flat tire, lockout, battery jump-start and towing services.
  • New car replacement: If your car is new and totaled in an accident, Shelter will replace it with the same make and model.

Here are some optional coverages you can add with Shelter:

  • Collision: Covers the repair and replacement of your car after an accident whether or not you’re at fault.
  • Comprehensive: Pays for the repair or replacement of your car if it's broken due to something other than a collision, like fire, flood or hail.
  • Medical payments: Covers medical treatment fees for injuries from a covered loss.
  • Personal injury protection: Covers loss of income and other expenses if you're unable to work due to an injury related to a covered accident.
  • Uninsured motorist – bodily injury: If you get in an accident with someone who doesn’t have insurance, this covers your medical fees and other expenses.
  • Uninsured motorist – property damage: Pays the costs of repairs or replacement if you're in an accident with an uninsured person who’s at fault.
  • Rental reimbursement: Covers the cost of a rental car while yours is out of commission due to an accident.
  • Accidental death: Provides payment in the event of accidental death of you or your spouse due to an auto incident.
  • Disability income: If you're injured in a car accident and can’t return to work, this coverage provides a weekly stipend for up to a year.
  • Gap insurance: If your financed car is totaled in an accident, this covers what you still owe.
  • Loss of use: Pays for putting your car in the shop after an accident.

You can make payments over the phone, online or through the mail. Shelter offers multipayment installment plans, as well.

I switched to Shelter two months ago because they gave me a good quote for both auto and homeowners. I just purchased my house. And then I had a car accident March 9. Shelter sent me a letter stating that my auto policy was being cancelled effective March 30. When I called to inquire about it, I was informed that my home owners insurance was also set to cancel on April 19. But I had not received anything regarding an issue with my homeowner’s policy. They then sent me another letter stating that I had requested the cancellation for the auto policy. I had made several phone calls to my local agent to try and get this resolved. And left voicemail. But did not get a call back. I’m very frustrated with Shelter. It has been a waste of time and I definitely would not recommend them! Very poor customer service.

This is February 26, 2024. My is broke down. I literally starting calling this company at 8:30 a.m. to just get my car towed. I started with contacting 1-800 Shelter..the lady did not speak English..I asked her to transfer me to someone that spoke English.. she refused to do that.. Then had to deal with 2 other agents with Shelter by the name of Cindy from the Sellersburg, IN area to another agent by the name of Angie..both agents behave as though they are 2 year olds. I asked Angie and Cindy if they would please get a towing company that was located in Salem, IN, they both said no, so a towing company did not come to pick up my car for a total of 5 hours.

Finally got into contact with Nick **, which is their corporate supervisor and told him that this was even mentally affecting my 6 year old daughter.. His response was oh. Get real!!! In my opinion Shelter Car Insurance Company is a horrific company for anyone single mother with children with their car being broke down..I do not recommend this company to anyone that wishes to stay sane.

We have had Shelter Insurance for home, auto and some personal insurance for 30 years. We have had fair success with small claims but until a May 7th severe hail storm no experience with major claims. It is now 3 months since the storm and we have received only a partial check for less than 1/3 of the total estimate from their recommended contractor. The contractor has been very patient but requires a 50% down payment to order products for the repairs. The agent has been hard to reach and the claims estimator says he mailed a supplemental check 2 weeks ago but it has not been received. He now says he has to cancel the check and issue a new check.

Why has this taken this long? We all continue to blame it on COVID but that excuse doesn’t mean squat. This is a general malaise that has set in throughout the country and the only recourse consumers have is to go public and complain in a review and hope other read it and stay away from this type of company. I am retired and had recent heart surgery and can’t do the repairs even though I have the experience and knowledge. We will certainly get different insurance after this is done. Homeowners, auto, renter insurance for our son at college and an additional life savings account for his future go to another company we hope soon.

My SL500 was hit parked, backed into across my passenger side. Here are some numbers you should keep in mind. These are the approved rates that they told me they can approve for work to be done on my car. Body work $56 an hour. Paint $56 an hour. Mechanical $85 an hour. Once you have your car checked out at a shop the actual cost will not ad up. If you own a Mercedes they will not adhere to the standards Mercedes strongly recommend that the shop is certified by Mercedes. The cost that I paid out of pocket to have my car repaired properly was over $1200, and they only paid out $560 for diminished value.

It was my choice to have the work done at that rate, but I was not willing to have my car repaired at a shop that worked at the rates they are will to pay. If you have a premium car that you truly love this company will not help you get it back into shape as it should be. I bought my car in flawless condition and they wanted to offer substandard compensation for repairs.

If I could give them negative stars, I would. I am not a policy holder with Shelter, but if I was I would cancel my policy and find insurance elsewhere. Back in November 2019, my vehicle was side swiped while parked on the side of the road by someone insured by Shelter. I continuously got the runaround from both the person's insurance agent and the claims adjuster and was constantly reaching out 3-4 calls/emails at a time before getting a response. After over a month of dealing with this, I finally received the check and took my vehicle in to be fixed.

When setting up my rental vehicle with Shelter, I was told the 17 day estimate on my vehicle repair "seemed lengthy" and that they would follow up with the body shop to be sure. I was also promised a rental vehicle comparable to my 2018 Chevy Silverado. When I got to the body shop, my rental car options were a Nissan Altima or I could pay $5/day for a Jeep Wrangler. I finally thought this whole situation was going to finally be over and then my body shop called to tell me my vehicle was done but that they wouldn't release it to me until they got approval from Shelter - they had reached out to them 10 times over a period of 2 weeks and had not gotten any return communications. I am frustrated and disappointed. This has been the worst experience I've ever had.

My wife and I have been with Shelter since they were MFA. When we married we merged our accounts. I have often shopped around for alternate insurance companies (friends often tell me that Shelter has outrageous premiums - I have not found that to be true). I tell them that the primary reason that I carry insurance is to have a hassle free claim. In the past 30 years I have filed 3 claims. The first was for storm damage to my 15 year old roof and gutters. The estimator came out and bid the replacement of a 2 foot section of soffit (not the fault of Shelter). One quick phone call to my agent (not his job) and the situation was cleared up and I had a new roof and gutters installed within 48 hours (even waiving the deductible).

The other two claims came within a week of each other when my 16 yo was involved in two fender benders. A single phone call for each was all it took to get the claims handled. There may be companies that charge you less for premiums, but remember why you are insured in the first place. Shelter rewards for loyalty as well, so even if you pay a bit more up front, in a few years that will even out especially if you bundle policies. My agent is extremely helpful as well and is not pushy. He quietly reviews my policies and if he sees something that may be lacking he calls, but just explains the options and doesn't give me a sales pitch. If I say no, he never brings it up again.

Never know who are or what is going on with your insurance. I will be contacting the insurance company to get another agent within my area! WARNING DO NOT AND DO NOT GO TO THIS AGENT!

The staff has always been helpful and proactive. They got involved to help resolve the claim. My agent is on top of things and makes suggestions as needed and that includes ways to lower costs if need be.

Our agent was right there with us. It was my son's 1st truck and a very bad wreck. Our agent made it a point to make sure our son knew these things happen, and his first concern was to ask if our son was okay. The truck got paid off quickly without a fight. Definitely a good company!! Very reasonable prices. Good rates and agents who truly care about you. They work hard to get you the best rates and work with you to make sure you get what you need.

I am writing a review about my experience with Shelter Insurance. I have had Shelter Insurance since I was 16. They are always there to help and I enjoy their 24/7 help when you call the 1-800 number. I would recommend Shelter Insurance to others.

I've been with shield of Shelter for over 10 years. They are very friendly and easy to work with and easy to reach when you need them. I was hit in a hit and run accident and they took care of everything and my rates did not increase. I'm extremely satisfied with their auto and home and life insurance policies.

Have only used it once after I hit a deer, but they were easy to work with and paid my claim quickly. My agent cares about my family and wants to make sure we are adequately covered. They also cover my home and two rental properties, and have many other financial products available.

They have always been good to work with. Excellent customer service. Always very helpful. Great bundle prices and offer discounts especially to those who are loyal customers. The agent we use is close to our home and responds in a timely manner to both phone calls and emails. We use them for home auto and insurance on our pop up camper.
