Please do not misleading Liberty and Safeco, Although all coming from Liberty Mutual. Safeco selected a total different business path: cheap and then worse services. When my house was damaged by plumbing leaking, Without sending licensed estimator, they sent their vendor to play estimator role, the worse was to asked you to sign vendor services agreement without detail services information, If you signed carelessly, Congratulations, you did fell into the trap because some of services not covered by insurance policy. Unfortunately, PA State Insurance Department did not have any regulations. Leave away Safeco and be safe.

Spent over a month convincing my VA mortgage lender (Caliber Home Loans) that my amortized mortgage payment was sent to Safeco, thus my policy should be active and I should be able to submit a claim for storm damage that occurred to my home. Finally proved that my payments were sent to Safeco and got my policy active after weeks of phone calls, etc, and then Safeco then declines to pay anything for my claim. Word of wisdom, If you get cheap scam insurance, don't expect them to pay for any damages, they will worm out of any payment. Pay a bit more to be treated like a paying customer versus paying a premium that returns basically nothing for you. I made the mistake of letting my mortgage lender (Caliber) choose my home owner policy (Safeco) for me, Don't let them choose for you, pick your own, you will be much better off and save a ton of grief and time.

I have never written a review on any institution, service industry establishment, or insurance company until now. I have been a customer of Safeco Insurance for many years because, I felt encouraged by the fact they are associated with my banking institution (I will not name). However, this is the second time I have been spoken to with a condescending attitude and this time it was insulting. I use to have a bundled policy with auto as well as homeowners coverage, but with comparison shopping found the auto insurance policy was merely double the amount of larger insurance carriers. After a review of my current claim, I still intend to file. In regards to their claims representative, both women I have spoken to are exceedingly rude. I am very disappointed in the customer service with the homeowners claim department has provided with handling two of my concerns.

I found out I was dropped by receiving a refund check in the mail. When I called my agent (who also wasn't aware of this), I found out that I'd been dropped for a porch issue I was already in the process of fixing. Once fixed I sent proof that the problem was resolved. They then claimed that they wouldn't take me back because of the age of my house. This wasn't an issue when I first got the policy. I am so unhappy with the way I was treated. If you have a historic home, even if it's been updated like mine has been, do not go with this company.

Purchased policy with new home, title company sent them a check for first year's premium, they sent it back to the title company uncashed. Meanwhile, lender insures me because I have no coverage. By the time I find out about this from the title company, Safeco wants premium AND a fee to "re-instate" policy. One month later they want another $158 because I "let my policy lapse" and my rate went up. All because they failed to process the check they were sent on the day my home sale closed. Five phone calls to them and even when their agents admitted they screwed up, no one could fix it. Cancelled them after the last call. Horrible horrible customer service.

Our house had a new roof in 2017. In May 2020 there was a 2.5" diameter hailstone storm. We didn't file a claim until December 2020 when a roofer examined the roof and provided detailed evidence of damage with many photographs. Roof had obvious divots throughout. The Safeco company adjustor disagreed vehemently, picked a portion of the roof under a tree as his sample "right" and denied claim saying roof only had "blistering" by unknown cause. Roofer said worst damage claims response he had ever seen. We were successful in replacing other rental property roofs insured with another company using this same roofer and his submitted evidence. We challenged the finding with SAFECO and a claim for $1100 was issued which no roofer would accept because damage was all over roof, they couldn't touch it for so low a price. Then we were told that our house wasn't insurable at renewal time, with an outstanding claim.
Agent was either negligent or purposely allowed this "poison pill" outcome from the company. In a panic we renewed an incorrect policy (rental versus homeowners insurance) online to be sure house stayed insured. Fortunately we were able to secure homeowners insurance the next year by changing company and agent. I will never insure under SAFECO again. The agent and the claims adjuster put us in an untenable position.

No adjuster would come out and actually see damage on my brand new house. They just estimated it by pictures then no one is ever there to answer phone. And adjusters are not very professional. I was told this was good place to trust but I don't know now. Very unsatisfied.

I have been with Safeco for many years. They have great coverage and their rates are very reasonable. The times that I have spoken with them they have been extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous. Luckily I have never had to file a claim with them. But if I ever do I am sure I will be treated fairly and in an expeditious manner.

I have been with Safeco for a few years. I got sick with Covid and was sick for a month and a half and I ask for an extension from 15th to the 22nd. Being sick still, I trusted everything was going okay and they had taken the 164.00 from my bank account only for my son to hand me mail where my bank had written to me that Safeco stated I had called and canceled my policy. A extension is not a cancellation. I won't write names out of respect but lady 1 tells me it was my broker who canceled, that was a lie. The broker lost her business four years ago. She transferred me to lady 2. She placed me on hold, comes back and said she had called broker and had given my name and number but she did try and restart my policy while having me on hold. She tells me and provided the broker number. Safeco lied!!! I had to rush and get another policy because Safeco put me in a uncomfortable position by lying to my bank!!

For six months, Safeco has been unable to get my billing correct. They are supposed to be paid from my credit card and escrow with my mortgage company. Neither is happening. They don’t bill, then they cancel the accounts, then they send letters threatening me with collections. Customer service is nonexistent, they just say contact the agent.
I have never seen such disarray with an insurance company as this. These are basic tasks. What in the world is so hard about them that this company can’t get them done? This has been an absolute nightmare. I can only imagine the mess if I ever had to file a claim. I’m leaving them and will advise everyone else to avoid them. I cannot and will not worry whether or not I’m insured. And I shouldn’t have to.

In September I called Safeco's general number and requested a quote. I was sent one via e-mail and decided to go with another carrier (StateFarm). Two months later I began receiving past due notices stating that premiums had not been paid. How the hell was a policy even opened without my consent? I called to complain to Safeco and the response? "We're not sure how that happened." In a day and age where large financial institutions such as Wells Fargo have been caught illegally opening accounts on consumers' behalf without their consent, I found this completely alarming. Do not trust Safeco - they clearly are up to fishy business.

After not hearing from Safeco for a month, they came through and paid for the repairs on my roof. I had given up! But I am very happy that the payment came though!
Original Review: Sept. 25, 2020
Two large parts of my roof blew off in a recent windstorm in Albuquerque, and I have some interior water damage as well. Initially, my experience with Safeco customer service was good: they responded in a timely manner, sent out someone to tarp my roof (though he only tarped one area), and sent their estimator out quickly. But, Safeco really lowballed the cost to repair the damages. They're claiming that the repairs are less than my deductible. A local reputable roofer gave me a quote that is four times as much as Safeco says the damages are. My roofer is shocked that they aren't covering the cost of the damages. And Safeco said they would be in touch regarding the interior water damage, but they haven't gotten back to me. How is this legal? I can't believe what a scam this is. I'm lucky that I can afford to repair my roof, but what about the people who can't? I'm switching to another insurance company as soon as I can.

This experience with Safeco has been a nightmare. The buck has been passed so many times that I have lost count. Water damage in 12 different places in the interior of a rental home (luckily the house was unrented at the time) resulted from storms during roof installation and resulted in soggy carpets, soaked dry wall in ceiling and walls, buckling floors, damaged hardwood flooring. The adjuster coming to see the damage approximately two weeks after it occurred recommended a low ball amount of money to repair. It would seem that he didn't understand the nature of water and the damage it causes traveling in a line throughout the entire eastern side of the house, but I find that difficult to believe.
Two months after the damage I was advised by a contractor it was not safe for me to spend time in the house due to toxicity caused by mold and mildew. I am now into the tenth month of negotiation for payment. I have received what I consider to be partial payment, but have had to claw and prod for every cent I have received. Furthermore, I have written to CEO's of both Safeco and Liberty Mutual on June 5 with no response. I would think that these companies would have a person or persons in the corporate office to deal with unhappy customers. Avoid Safeco.

After a heavy snow there was damage to the roof of our well house. I called the claims number on my policy which I have had for over 12 years. I am in Washington and the adjuster was in Texas. He assured me he would help me with my claim. After many pictures and emails, I was told the claim was denied. When I asked for an explanation, he would not return my calls. A company review followed and the adjuster made up a list of voicemails he supposedly made. We are self quarantined and did not miss any calls and no calls were left on my machine. After reading other reviews on this site, I realize my experience is common. Do not buy insurance from Safeco. Put your money in the bank instead.

I have a wind damaged roof from a recent storm. All my neighbors filed claims and got new roofs, some of which have homeowners policies from companies that are notorious for not paying roof claims. Safeco denied my claim, said my roof wasn't installed properly, which isn't true. The "independent" inspector lifted shingles for nearly half an hour till he found one that had one bad nail, took a picture of that and said roof was installed wrong. To make things worse, the claims adjuster was very unprofessional, rude, a complete know-it-all (yet knows nothing) and uncaring. I have a roof inspection report when I bought the house, it was fine then. I'm not sure how this type of behavior isn't criminal, these inspection companies are clearly in bed with SafeCo to see everything their way. The roofing companies I have quotes from strongly disagree with the report, laughing out loud disagree.
I have to put a new roof on out of my pocket now. SafeCo won't ever cover a roof claim with their lying report and a new insurance company won't cover an existing storm damaged roof that isn't repaired. First claim and I've paid more in premiums over the years than the cost to replace the roof. What's disappointing is there doesn't seem to be any great home insurance companies based on these reviews. SafeCo deserves zero stars. I imagine SafeCo like Insuricare from Pixar's The Incredibles. The only way you'll be lucky enough to get good service is if you've got someone on the inside to help you. Otherwise, they are out to make money and don't care about their customers.

I've had Safeco Insurance for about 30 years. I absolutely love my agent. He is always extremely helpful and professional. I accidentally left my water running on hot in my utility room on the main floor with a daylight basement below. Needless to say half the house needed repair. They were amazing to work with. Even though the repairs were over $100,000, then fixed everything and put me up in an apartment for six months while repairs were being made and paid to move me there. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I had to file a claim due to a burst pipe. The excessive water then caused some damage to the piers under my home (cottage). I was told by Jennifer ** that my claim is approved and the water and mold issue would be addressed immediately. This is currently during the pandemic so everything is being done virtually. I had three estimates for the damage.
She then said I needed an engineer to write a report, a structural engineer. We had already had one go to our home due to the concern about the piers. He went back out to review what he saw (additional $700), that Jenn (our adjuster said we could use the same one) and wrote a report. Jennifer then said that she spoke with her manager and was told I had to use their company to evaluate my losses. They would not be using my estimates that I had, even though she had told me to get them. I said I would be willing to pick one with them but I would NOT allow a company that is affiliated with SAFECO to be the only one evaluating the damage as I don’t feel they would have my best interest in mind. She refused.
The next step was now they want two years of heating bills before they send anyone out to ensure that there was heat in the home, 2 years? This is the engineer company, not the insurance. Why would I be proving anything to a company who is supposed to be INDEPENDENT evaluations my heating system? I have called the manager for 3 days and not one refund call, his name is Tom **. Sadly I guess this will go to litigation. As mold continues to grow in my home with absolutely no resolution at hand. Do not choose SAFECO/Liberty Mutual, spend a little more and get a company that is accredited and reliable to help you when something happens!

We signed up for Safeco because our agent said that it would be cheaper than Encompass. We agreed to take it. They agreed to insure our home at the same level that Encompass had insured it. When they came out to look at the house that said that they would only insure it at half the cost it has been insured for -- for the past ten years. It was a bait and switch tactic. I think the evaluator was on something when he came out to take pictures. Be careful of these sleuths, they will burn you.

My mother had some water damage in her home and called Safeco, her insurance company. They sent out a restoration company then an adjuster a week later. The restoration guy told her to close off the room and not to use a fan. This caused mold. The adjuster told her he didn't think Safeco would cover any of it. After a week of waiting for a call from Safeco, she called the restoration company who informed her Safeco was not going to pay. She never received a call from Safeco. I contacted Safeco and received a call from a claims manager who stated that there was a well hidden disclaimer stating that they would not cover water damage. Really? Why do we pay them a premium if they won't pay for damage? Anyway, she stated the policy was rather long and it's impossible for the homeowner to know all the disclaimers within the policy.
She also stated that the restoration company was not on their preferred vendor list, so any mold damage due to their recommendation would need to be taken up with them. Um...they sent this person! She then said that sometimes their agents know of local people and call them even if they are not on the preferred vendor list! Needless to say, they didn't pay anything for the damage. And, if I had not contacted them, we would still be waiting for that phone call from them!!

I have owned my home for nearly 13 years. And those 13 years I've never once needed to make a claim until last summer when a 40-foot tree fell on my property. I called to see if they would help me with the cleanup fees and they did absolutely nothing for me. Apparently if it doesn't hit my home it's not covered by my property insurance. I got quotes to clean the tree up and it was nearly $5,000. I did all the work myself. This year I had a 40-foot limb fall on my pickup truck. It totaled the whole truck including cab and frame. Because I don't have full insurance on a 1984 pickup truck my insurance won't pay out one dime. Be sure to read the fine print people. This company does not pay out for anything. Recently had a devastating hail storm in Woodland Park, CO. The Safeco represented claims adjuster grossly underestimated the cost to repair my roof by $2900. Furthermore, the claims rep completely missed four windows which had large amounts of condensation trapped between the double window panes the day after the storm event. These windows are on the side of the house that was hit hardest by the hail wind and rain. I got estimates for the windows from a Window contractor ($2800), and sent SafeCo high resolution pictures of the damage, along with the estimate. Despite me asking Safeco to send someone out again to take another look at my windows, they chose to do the inspection "In House", instead.
They denied my Window supplement claim, due to "age, wear and tear". This despite the fact that these windows never exhibited this problem until the day after the storm, and the person who denied my Window supplement has absolutely no idea how old the windows are - I don't even know myself, so there is no way for him to know. Absolutely disgusted with how I have been treated thus far, and how obvious these SafeCo reps go out of their way to side in favor of Safeco's best interest.
I've learned a lot of hard lessons, with this being my first big insurance claim. The biggest one being naive enough to think Safeco had my best interest in mind. But I will never make these mistakes again going forward. I have filed a complaint with Colorado Division of Insurance, and I am now looking into hiring a licensed public adjuster to represent MY best interest, to fight for the money that is rightfully mine for these damaged windows. It will be so very satisfying to fire Safeco after this debacle is over.
Never again will I do business with them, never again will they receive a single penny from me for any one of their services, and never will I recommend Safeco to anyone under any circumstances. Learn from my mistake: If you ever have a big homeowners insurance claim, hire your OWN Public Adjuster, so you can see what estimates look like to repair the damage that match some sort of reality, and not some low-ball number that will surely be given to you by the Safeco represented adjuster.

He said my upper main roof is too high and he didn’t think it was safe to climb up there.
This year we had a retaining wall fall because of wind. The claim rep. Earth Day of 2016, a tree fell on my home due to high winds. I reported my claim 15 minutes after it happened. It took Safeco 19 days to respond. First demonstration of bad faith. The first adjuster to work this case stalled on sending an engineer to review the damage because he was trying to help Beal Bank gain ownership of my property when they had no legal right to it. He managed to get them paid $48K because they claimed to be my mortgage holder. NOTE: I did not have a mortgage, and I had been through probate and was awarded the home, free and clear. I notified Safeco of these facts, but they either did not check with the court or simply did not care to check because the adjuster in charge, Kent **, saw an opportunity of make a bit of extra money.
** sent his henchwoman, Mazandarani, to be the field adjuster. She brought with her a contractor from Protech. She misled me by stating that the contractor was in their network of preferred contractors and that if I used his services, I would be provided with a 3-year warranty on the work. End of job, no warranty from either Safeco or Protech.
Initially, my claim was for repair, but the scope of the project changed when it was determined I had no foundation. My home was built in 1923 and had a pier and beam foundation. Over the years, the house sank and from the kitchen back to the bedroom the house sat on the earth, suspended above it in the living room and bathroom. Because there was no poured foundation, repairs could not be made to my home until it was brought up to code. The adjuster and contractor decided my house AND storage unit had to come down, everything rebuilt from the ground up. Of course, there would likely be some cost overruns of about $20K, but we could discuss that later. NOTE: There was no structural damage done to my storage unit, but the adjuster claimed there was.
In December of 2017, my family was forced to move into a house that had no utilities, none of my personal goods, which were in storage, no gas line. When I contacted ** to tell him of my mistreatment, of Mazandarani's action, his only response was to tell me he was on vacation. This event happened over the holiday season. For the duration of the claim process, ** misled me to believe he was Mazandarani's supervisor. He is not, but he did not report her actions to her supervisor as they are working together to defraud me.
Protech was initially hired to complete repairs. When the scope of the project changed, I should have been advised by Mazandarani to select a new contractor, but that would have required me to use their contractors network, that says it monitors all work throughout the process. All work here was conducted without any external review by anyone except the inspectors from Building and Safety.
Protech had me sign a contract for repairs that was incomplete when given to me in that it did not have all of the pages attached and was not an original document, but a copied document. They also had me sign a pay schedule that was not adhered to at all. Protech also changed the amount they were charging to do the job, but never submitted any paperwork explaining why. Protech also stole all documents that were supposed to be left in the house when the work was completed. No invoices, receipts, or warranties are here and had I not opened a complaint with the Insurance Commission, they might have gotten away with stealing over $200K without anyone being the wiser.
In October 2017, I asked Mazandarani how much money was left in the account to pay for the work. I was prepared to go to the bank and get a HELOC to take care of any overage, but she would not answer my question. I found out on 6 March 2018 that there was $80K remaining of the $190K available. Protech charged $238K for this shoddy work. I cannot understand how this is so when there was not that amount of money remaining in the claim. They claimed they were paid in full. They submitted an estimate, not a final bill or final invoice. An estimate that netted them $190K when they had done less than $110K of work. My property value actually decreased.
The Insurance Commission investigation continues. The Contractors State License Board will investigate. My wish is that there was one honest person working for Safeco. It is a closed system. When you speak to their Presidential Service Team, they simply report everything you tell them to the people you have the complaint against. They even let them investigate themselves. That is what Kent ** is doing even after I fired him, Mazandarani, and Vince Paglia's Protech.
Everyone I have spoken to during this fiasco has mocked me, indirectly called me a liar, condescended to me. I have experienced not one whit of professionalism, unless it is the professional way they commit fraud and theft. Everything looks good from the outside, but inside and underneath are not what we have been led to believe is true. The water filter, which we were told is a whole house water filter, had no filter in the canister, and only filters hot water. The paint is coming off the eaves. Outdoor outlets were poorly installed and have gaps that will allow water to get into them. I have not had a stove for 5 months because they rearranged my kitchen, not following the plans, and I do not feel safe using the stove where they placed it.
I had a yard full of plants and flowers to support the pollinators, help with asthma, provide privacy, fruit and vegetables. My yard is now a large litter box because they killed virtually every living thing on the property. And they are ignoring my personal property claim that wasn't filed until Protech abandoned the project in December, when we were forced to move in and all of my goods that had been left on the property because we were only supposed to be out of home 3-6 months, were all gone. Much of what was taken were heavy steel and wrought iron pieces, including my fencing, that I suppose was taken for recycling. My Weber grills were taken, my security doors with privacy screens were taken, my gardening supplies thrown away, my 31-year old lemon tree was cut down with fruit on it. There is no intention to compensate me for this loss. Stay away from Safeco. They are ruthless, immoral, cruel, and seem proud to be so.

This company will do anything not to cover claims and then once you are denied significantly raise your policy cost. After doing research I found they have a bad reputation and consumers warn against them. I am hoping to switch companies as soon as possible.

Total confusion from me. The claim is not closed. I did not understand the agent properly. Received a phone call explaining the next steps and they actually apologized for the missed communication as did I.

Bathroom leak - At first they responded very quickly to get the house cleared of all the wet materials and I was very impressed. Then suddenly it was like they were in a rush to cut a check for the lowest amount possible and when I wanted them to hold off they informed me that after receiving estimates from local companies they can adjust their claim and send more. Next time I talked to them, I was told it was settled, even though the estimates I sent them showed their settlement would in no way make me whole. All before I even deposited their check. So now I will be needing to find a very inexpensive method of getting things replaced. Very disappointed.

We had hail and wind damage related to the 12-26-2015 tornado. Having heard about problems filing a claim I contacted a private adjustor. Eventually I required over 4 inspections of the roof and Safeco was playing hardball and denying I had any damage even though everyone said we did. A metal vent looked like a Native American had done a war dance using steel heels. Every window sealant trim had damage and the paint on the end of the garage looked like it had measles where hail removed paint. They forced arbitration and the adjustors met and only the company adjustor inspected the roof and my adjustor did not. They said I had 50% damage but refused to show me or tell me where. I only got 1/2 half of a roof.
Every one of my neighbours have received new roofs related to the same loss. If you have Safeco, change now or you will forever regret it should you have a storm loss. Upset, I was not represented well and the Texas State board of insurance does not care. You have no idea the comments you get when calling them to see how to report a problem. The lobbyists are in control, they have the money. and the state readily accepts it. I have been in insurance for over 40 years and have never had opportunity to experience such shabby service.

Had a hail claim in Colorado Springs with considerable damage. Safeco lowballed everything (I had another house damaged at the same time but with a different company so I could compare costs). The adjusters from LA only wanted to argue; they were arrogant and condescending. Compared with the other house with damage, working with Safeco was a disaster. I had to get my agent involved to get results. Never again will do business with this company. Beware!

When Lakewood, Colorado had a devastating hail storm, we were not worried because we felt we had the right insurance and had kept our home updated and maintained. We were wrong! Safeco denied most of our hail damage claim and low balled us on the items they did pay. Very poor service and we are out over $25,000.00 for a new roof.

They first forced us to file 2 claims on same damage instead of letting us add them together. Then when we rented our property & switched to a landlord policy they charged us double for having 2 claims so similar so close together. They mailed my refund to my tenants instead of updated address. I found better coverage & now they are holding my refund payment for 14 days. They were rude & very unreliable. I would never use them again or recommend them to anyone.

Safeco homeowners rejected my claim totally but agreed to pay after talking to a lawyer we hired. They paid one-third of the damage which were entitled to us without a lawyer. This is an old claim but I was urged to write a review now.

I have been with Safeco for more than 6 years with both homeowner and auto insurances. The hail damage claim was denied in 2014. I have kept on complaining from 2014 until 2015 and finally It was resolved. But then I received nonrenewal policy letter in 2016 with a unreal reason that the owner lacks of maintenance for the wood chimney that led to the leakage from the roof. It was not right because my house does not have any chimney. Secondly, the same loss issue was then counted in three different claims. The policy was denied to be renewed. Also my online information including claim information was cleared out completely even the policy is still in active until now. I contact Safeco but the representatives passed me back to agents and then the agents refused to correct and they blamed back on Safeco for those misled information issues.

Filed claim after lightning hit our home. We have never made a claim before, the service was awful. First 2 agents would not even call us back and kept telling us things that would happen - that never did. Come to find out the 3rd agent told us we were put on a "fast track" and that is why no one was coming out to assess damages. OMG!!! 3rd agent (5 days later) came to inspect and the pipe burst when the AC guy they had us use attempted to get AC working. Now on our 4th AGENT!!!! Insane and are living in a hotel with children. TERRIBLE service. WE ARE AMAZED at how poorly this process is working!!! REALLY NOTHING WE CAN DO BUT document everything and wait...

So far I am very happy with Safeco. I have only had it for a few months, but I saved almost $1000 from my previous carrier. They have a variety of payment plans available. And this was the first company that I was able to combine the Homeowners and Auto with the same company and take advantage of a multi policy discount. We have a log home in Montana and most carriers would not cover us. I can't speak to their claim service because there have not been any claims.

We had leak that was not covered by insurance but SAFECO helped us source a company that could fix it.

I have never had to file a claim on my homeowner's insurance and hopefully, I never will. The company offers a large discount since our vehicles are also insured there. They send out renewal notices well in advance of the actual bill which allows plenty of time to budget for the annual premium. I choose the annual payment option to save additional money on the premium. My agent speaks highly of this company and insurance is one of those things you do not want too much knowledge of. If you know all about the company, then you have had contact/claims. I'll just pay for the peace of mind. Thank you.
