I got a renters policy with Progressive in 2022. I went with them due to I already had my car insurance with them and never had any issues. First year of the policy was fine although it was a high price and I was suppose to get a discount on my car insurance but did not. It did not affect my car policy in any way. This year when the policy renewed I was double charged the first month which I disputed but nothing happened. In October of this year I canceled the policy to which the lady was very rude and I was told I would get a refund but did not. I just called to check with them about this refund and was told I still owe them money even though the policy was canceled and I was never notified about owing this money. My next move is to change my auto policy for this company is horrible and I have been with them a long time to be treated so badly.

After a February fire that pretty much gutted my second floor I put in a claim. Not only was/is the settlement amount incredibly low, it was an insult. They are supposed to be paying 300 dollars a week for "expenses." It's never on time and I have to have my adjuster call over and over to find out what the problem is this month. It was due in October and it's November 6 and still no response. They actually prefer to MAIL the check and that takes four or five days, this when they can send it securely in a matter of seconds with a state routing and account number. Backward? You bet and they flat don't care about your problems. Do yourself a BIG favor and don't hire Progressive. They don't have a customer service department with live people like their car insurance does. Because of this I'll be leaving at the end of this nightmare. A company with good CS is a definite must and this isn't one of those. Too bad they'll lose my car insurance business too.

Progressive increased my premium by 100% to $3400/yr. Others had increases of 30 to 50%, but my policy was more than doubled. I have never filed a claim, and the usual reasoning that "Florida has hurricanes" doesn't apply because others at a townhall meeting had increases but much less, and NONE of them had a 100% increase. I'm selling my home because of Progressive and their unmitigated greed. I will never do business with them again.

On September 29th of 2022, my husband and I obtained and homeowners insurance policy from Progressive to begin on October 1st of 2022. The policy was contracted to last one full year, and we paid for the policy in full at the beginning of the contract for a total of $2,095 as listed in our paperwork. On August 9th, 2023, my husband and I came back from a trip to Colorado and found a notice from Progressive in our mailbox that had been forwarded from our previous address. It stated "Unfortunately, because we didn't receive the minimum amount due requested in a previous notice, we canceled your policy as of the date shown above", which was on August 5th. Obviously, we were both quite confused as we had paid our policy premium in full at the very beginning of the policy period.
We then called Progressive, we were told that "Progressive had done some auditing and found that we were getting too much of a discount for our auto and homeowner's insurance bundle", and that we actually would owe $$414 more for the homeowner’s policy than they had originally told us and listed on all of our policy documents. We asked why they didn't send us an email like they do for our automatic withdrawals for our car insurance, and Cierra (the agent) said that they had sent one. I have looked through my inbox and through my spam folder, I never received an email regarding this premium change.
We asked why they didn't reach out to our mortgage company PennyMac, Cierra said they did reach out and didn't receive any correspondence. We reached out to a PenneyMac representative later that day and he stated that they had never received any communication from Progressive concerning our homeowner’s insurance policy beyond the day it was issued on October 1st, 2022.
Regardless of the lack of communication, had we known the actual price to begin with we would have found homeowner’s insurance elsewhere but at this point we are 10.5 months into a 12-month policy, and Progressive wants another $414 because Progressive made a mistake. Progressive and I made an agreement together with specific covenants, for a specific amount of time, for a specific amount of money, and it is entirely unfair and downright underhanded for either party to change that agreement until the policy period has ended. I wouldn't pay more money for that policy even if it was only one cent, because that was not the agreement. I feel that Progressive is behaving fraudulently in this situation, and I plan to file complaints to the appropriate entities to investigate it because their behavior is absurd and despicable.

System allows you to get discounts if you enter your Progressive policy that you're not actually eligible for at which point you will be billed. Customer service agent cannot see a history of why changes were made and can't escalate to someone who can actually help you. Just a huge waste of time and kind of a bait and switch.

So now why don't they know the age of my roof? Absolutely refuse to get that folder from the claims department. Why doesn't the claims department automatically put that in your folder? Making us have to resubmit this? You can't be very good if you're getting rid of customers, when you already have the information in your system. I think I call this mind-boggling stupidity. I was paying a premium of $1350 a year and chose to switch to Progressive for a lower rate with similar coverage but a higher deductible. First year my premium was less than $900 - the 2nd year it went up to $1350 (not notice or anything) but still had the higher deductible. I was not happy about it but stayed with progressive. The 3rd year I received an email that per progressive I was "not supposed to receive". It was what was being billed for my premium - and it went up to $2500. I immediately called Progressive and was told that they were going to call me before billing my mortgage company and discuss the increase before billing. They did not call me and they did bill my mortgage company and this was completely unacceptable to me. This is more than a 150% increase in my bill in 3 years!
I had one claim during this time for a leak in my water heater that caused extensive damage only to find out that my insurance did not even cover it (my previous insurance with the lower deductible did cover this by the way) but this was not why my premium went up - per Progressive the company they were using raised their rates and this was why the increase. So after hours on the phone with my bank and with Progressive they found another company for me with lower rate - Homesite insurance (the reviews for them are horrible!). So they told me - after a lot of calls and denial that they already billed my mortgage company- that they would switch my ins. reimburse me the amount back that they charged, I would have to receive the check and send it back to my bank and have them put it back into escrow. Then I would call Progressive back and cancel the $2500 insurance and start using the $900 insurance.
Per the Progressive customer service "it's real easy to fix!" But it was not - I spent HOURS making phone calls and getting this taken care of. Also my bank charged me fees for this... So I kept everything in writing and wrote customer service at progressive telling them what my fees for this was and asking that they repay me the amount ($67). I sent an email 12/15/21 and was told they would respond in 5-7 business days, after 3 weeks I emailed them again only to get the same response.
Then yesterday 1/24 I received a phone call from the new insurance company - Homesite. They were told by Progressive that I needed a reimbursement for my insurance??!! This had nothing to do with Homesite! It was Progressive that tried to sneak in a %150 rate increase - but I caught them! Be very careful of Progressive - there should NEVER EVER be any reason to do this to a customer. There will NEVER be an excuse for this kind of increase - especially with no notice! As of today - there has not been an answer to my email and the 5-7 business days have expired.

I was happy with Progressive until they wanted to increase my home Insurance 178%. Could not get answers to why the increase - just a list of possible causes without any ability to tell me how each impacted me. They said they had no way of determining the impact of each factor they cited. They tried to blame Homesite but I got a quote from another Insurance Company that is underwritten by Homesite and it was almost the same as I was paying. Progressive either made an error or has some odd algorithm that skyrocketed my rate. They said my Insurance Score was worse than before so I believe that may have been the main impact but they couldn't confirm that. Odd that my Insurance Score got dramatically worse when I had no claims and my Credit Score is about the same as it has been in the past at 823.
Seems to be a common theme when I read reviews of Progressive, that the home insurance rate increases dramatically after 3 years without explanation. I got a much lower rate from another company and moved all my policies to that Company. I'm paying a little more for my auto insurance but saving on my home owner insurance and 2 travel trailer policies. I tried to get answers for 3 weeks and just got nowhere. Every time a different rep when I called and no one took ownership of my issue to try to get it resolved except the last rep I talked to. It took two months to decide that Progressive does not honor what they've quoted. In July 2019, based in their quote I've had paid $357 for 6 month period, in August 2019 they charged me $42.00 due to an "adjustment" since I did not bundle my home insurance with them, which by the way they quoted $350.00 over than my actual provider; now in September 2019 they are charging me $427.00 more, base in public records showing that my 2 boys are living with me and they've decided to add them to the policy?
Even when I've sent the documents showing that they have the incorrect info, they are still charging me for the 1st two months of premium, before removing them and going back to what I've been quoted at the 1st place, the worst part is that their customer (un)service and underwriting department does not talk the same language. Neither company would take responsibility for the situation. Progressive forwarded a copy of an email that they claimed to have emailed me but there is absolutely no record of me receiving such an email. Our Progressive Homeowners Insurance policy came with the realtor. At first, I was going to change it, but for the amount of coverage, I initially believed it was a good deal. Then, the increases came, but all in all, the company's excellent reputation was the thing that kept me with this company. I like that they have a comprehensive coverage for most problems that befall a homeowner, a claim adjuster that responds in a timely fashion and a representative that will suggest updates or modifications to the policy. But sometimes, I think the price of the policy could be reduced and not lose coverage. Also, their policy could use a little more a of the layman's language to convey their meanings. The rate adjustments could be a little more relatable too.

The policy is simple for me to understand which makes things much easier to figure out. I also like that I can get online and view my policy as well as make any changes that I need. It is easily accessible. Making it easy makes a huge difference in how I feel about a company.

Had an event last December that flooded the house. I am disabled and my wife was pregnant and they gave us a fraction of money to repair the damage and still have not paid us for our personal items which is over $80,000. They had the nerve to tell us to produce receipts for everything that was purchased even though that pictures and another insurance adjuster saw the items and the Damage they try not and will not pay out claims unless you sue them or get a public adjuster. The adjuster was very rude and disrespectful towards us and Progressive even only put the policy in my name and not my wife and they knew that I had health conditions and had a near-death event which would have left my family in Dire Straits had the event occurred a couple of months earlier. Then to add to injuries they increase my premium by 35% which raised up my mortgage.
These people are absolute Crux and then there was another event while this event was being fixed by one of the companies where they ruined my driveway and Homesite sent us $500 and the job that two companies came and gave estimates on one was for $20,000 the other one was for 13000 and they said to send over the information which we did several times and they said they never got it a whole bunch of malarkey from this company. Then the owners of the companies actually spoken to Progressive Homesite and they sent their proposals through and then Homesite says that they never received anything from them. These people are complete these people are complete liar and are criminals and the people who work for them are carpetbaggers.
The sad part is when I mention this whole situation without even mentioning Homesite Progressive people automatically say those words and so do business owners. They throw this clown flow out to do the commercials for this destructive scandalous insurance company that never pays you out but will take your money. The funny part is when Progressive called around the time I had to renew the policy a person from Progressive called saying that my premium was too high and I should drop that insurance company which was stupid because I was like you are the insurance company and I am trying to dump you guys then she informed me that we cannot shut out our policy without settling out the claims... Sounds like Hotel California to me. A trap that you can't leave. We will definitely bring a lawsuit against this company of Thieves.

They have sent a second rate construction company to give an estimate that is $11,000.00 lower than our lowest estimate. We will have to either pay for materials and try to do the work ourselves or pay out of our pockets to restore our home. We paid our premiums in full and on time, they will take your money and if you have a problem, they will not help you. On July 21, 2018, a storm hit and burn out my AC/HEATING UNIT. I have no air in the house and it's been over 90 degree weather. I called and filed a claim, I asked to get place in a room or a coolant unit. They decline. Per my policy I have coverage. They told me since your house is still liveable we cannot provide room or cooling unit. How is a house still livable with the thermostat saying over 95 degrees in the house. When the HVAC company came to see about unit, The tech stated that I will need another unit and everything will need to be replaced from the outside and inside. When the tech turned in paperwork to my claim adjusted, he lied on the report and said something different. My adjuster told me that they will not be paying for any damages. I called and did a customer complaint on the tech cause he told me one thing and turn in something different.
I got a second & third opinion from another Air company. They quoted that the whole unit would need to be replaced. I turned in other quotes from different companies. They reviewed it and stated that only can go by what the company they hired put in the paperwork. As of today August 5, 2018, I still have no air with elderly mom and 2 children in the home with 90 degree close to 100 degree weather.
Progressive Homeowners insurance is the worst company you can ever have for homeowners insurance. They are not considerate of people well being. It's a shame they have bad companies that lie to keep them from paying for covered damages. I pay money every month to think I'm cover under a policy, but in reality, they ripping people off. I will be canceling my insurance and telling family members & friends they are the worst company to ever have. Something has to be done about this. 3 weeks with no air is ridiculous. Progressive sent me to Homesite, which turns out to be a non-accredited company according to Consumer Affairs. There was zero notification that I had been redirected to Homesite. I get to the page to bundle car and renter's insurance and it gives me the price and I think it's reasonable so I do it, giving them my debit card information. Then it says, "Congratulations on your renter's insurance, would you like to get car insurance now???" I'm like, "Where is my car insurance???"
So I call Progressive for the next 3 hours (since they can't find me) until they finally give me the Homesite number. I call the Homesite number, following the prompts to the correct department, but for some reason the person who answers can't hear me. I do this three times. Finally I call the claims department and the girl who answers gives me the direct number to the department I need and finally someone can hear me. I explain and say, "I want a refund." She says, "No problem, we'll cancel your insurance tomorrow BUT it will take 15-20 business days to reimburse you!!!" So now I don't have insurance, don't have money on my card to buy insurance, and am in a real pickle. And don't know what I'm going to do. We were assured there were no issues in covering our home for the upcoming year.
After several months of coverage we were abruptly cancelled with no opportunity to address any issues underwriting had with our coverage. After this cancellation, I withheld the following months premium and was eventually reported to collections. I disputed the charge with the credit bureau (Transunion) and the claim against my credit was dismissed. The very day I wrote the scathing review of Homesite Insurance I received a call from my adjuster telling me that they were going to cover the whole job except the oil tank itself and its contents. Good news. The reason I gave Homesite 3 stars is the investigation could have gone lots faster. I feel that three weeks without use of the oil heat is a bit much. Beyond that everything is a go for the completion of the cleanup. Homesite is a good value but a bit slow.
Original Review: March 1, 2018
On February 9th the heating oil tank in my basement sprang a leak. The leaking must have begun at about 9 PM but I didn't notice it until 10 when I smelled the oil. Upon inspection I found that there was nothing I could do to stop the remaining oil from leaking out. At the same time my sump pump had been pumping the oil out into the yard. I unplugged the pump immediately and called the fire department. When they arrived they checked the situation and said there was nothing they could do. I called the claim number and after registering my claim was advised to find my own cleanup company. The following morning (Saturday) the county health department came by and gave me the numbers for mitigation teams. I called the closest one to my home and they responded within an hour. It's been almost three weeks with no heating system other than my wood stove and the insurance co, Homesite of the Midwest is still dragging its feet.
I need to point out that about half of the job is done. The basement has been almost cleaned out and most of the contents removed (saved as evidence) but since the water that comes into the basement during the spring can't be pumped by the sump pump onto the lawn it has to be collected and disposed of in giant plastic tanks. These tanks are emptied by big vacuum trucks sometimes 4 times a week The bill from just this is around $10,000 so far and we're still waiting for Homesite to get done "investigating". So far an adjuster has yet to show up. The adjuster assigned to my case is never available on the phone either. I have homeowners insurance to cover catastrophic events like this and would like to think the insurance underwriter is on my side, naive as that is. Let the buyer beware.

Hurricane Matthew hit N.C. hard in Oct. 2016. Our yard was flooded up to our front steps (we had our house built up because of the potential of flooding in our area). Almost a week later, the water had subsided enough for us to check for any damage due to the wind and high waters. Other than a few shingles and outdoor items blown away or ruined we felt blessed. Then we checked our backyard! Our inground fiber glass pool was almost drained and had our lawn chairs and an anti mosquito bowl (about 20 pds.) were inside the pool. We immediately entered the pool and removed the items and were sick to see a crack in the bottom of the pool.
We filed a claim for the damage. To date we have received some 20+ letters from the insurance company, many were duplicates. We had an adjuster come out, a nice young man who almost immediately said "I don't know what to do about this, I've never worked with fiber glass pools this big". One would assume that he was very inexperienced after that remark. After another 7 letters or so just repeating the same thing "we are processing your claim", we were told to get a "professional" fiber glass company to come out and write out his/her findings. (at a cost of $100.00).
Their opinion was that the items in the pool had caused the crack and drained the pool, causing the pool to slant inward. A coverable offense. Within a week or so, we received word from the insurance company denying our claim. It seems their claims adjuster (remember the one who said he didn't know what to do?) felt that the problem wasn't weather related but was due to earth settlement/ground movement. We didn't have a tornado, it was announced by the weather channel as a hurricane!!
This has been all time most stressful experience I can ever remember. The staff all "seem" to have no knowledge of anything and getting any of them on the phone or call backs is nigh on to impossible. I found their attitudes to be lazy and hum drum. They refuse to let you speak to upper management (although that would probably be useless) by saying "all" management are in meetings. DO NOT BUY PROGRESSIVE HOMEOWNERS even if Flo is adorable.

They create policies without accurate information (they didn't know what type of roof was even on my home, and I'd had the policy in place for nearly five years before I filed my first and only claim). They raise your rates every year and communicate this to you via letters in the mail that you're expected to comb through. You deal with three different companies if you have an issue with a claim - Progressive, Homesite and Wardlow.
