My Terrible Experience with Progressive – Why You Should Avoid Them. I want to share my frustrating experience with Progressive’s homeowner’s insurance so others can avoid the headache I went through. From the moment I filed a claim for a small bathtub leak, I could tell it was going to be a nightmare. The way they handled everything was unprofessional, dismissive, and completely lacking in customer.
From the very beginning, Progressive made me. I wouldn’t recommend Progressive to anyone. If you’re looking for an insurance company that actually cares about its customers, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Progressive is not the company for you. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and making sure others know how they operate. Don’t fall for their low rates—it’s not worth the frustration when you actually need them.

I purchased bundled car and home insurance through Progressive, not fully realizing at the time that home insurance was through a secondary company, Homesite. After my coverage started Homesite sent out an inspector, which is not uncommon. A week or so later I was notified that I would have to replace my roof and fix a section of railing on my deck or they would cancel my policy in six weeks. Though my roof didn't have any leaks it was fairly old and I had been thinking about replacing it this year, and I had actually already started getting quotes from contractors. This was in January in Virginia and snow was on the ground.
I called and spoke with the Homesite rep and told them 6 weeks was an unreasonably short period to get a roof replaced during winter, when weather stops most roofing contractors from working. They didn't care, and said I would need to supply photos of a new roof, repaired deck railing, and a paid receipt for the work or they would cancel. Well, my contractor went out of his way to get the work done quickly and I sent in all the photos and receipt required a week before their deadline. They canceled my policy anyway, with no explanation.
In fact they didn't even notify me of the cancelation. When I looked at my credit card records I found that they had partially refunded my premium back on the date of the original "warning" message, so they had no intention of continuing my coverage. But this story has a silver lining. I shopped around and got a better policy from Allstate at a significantly lower cost. I am really glad I found out Homesite was a disreputable company without having to file a claim. Avoid this company at all costs.

We were happy to get a home year policy Progressive with Homesite Insurance. Unfortunately, we had a water leak and at first thought it was going to be an awful thing, but my attorney son sent a letter and it went very well after that. We were very happy with the process and how our bathroom/bedroom came out. That was our 2nd claim in 40 years and the first was with a different company. When it came to our renewal from this company they were increasing our yearly policy by almost $2,400!!!! Yes! The increase was almost $2,400! On top of that to add salt to the wound my deductible was going to increase to $5,000 from $1,500! The roof, if we had a claim, was going to cost us 7%. So I was very thankful that I found a company to insure us for the same. I paid the first year with only a $500 and all the same coverages!

This place is the worst. They are happy to take my premiums for years. Then they fly a drone over my house saying they will not renew my policy unless I get a new roof. Roof was good for another 5 years at least but I scheduled to get a new roof just to keep my policy intact. Now they cancelled me even though the work is scheduled to be done.

If I could give negative 10 stars I would. I have been a Progressive customer with home and auto for over 10 years. I have had ONE claim in all that time. A tree fell on my house in Jan 2023 during an ice storm. The claim adjuster lived in Texas and had no clue about New England Weather. The adjuster who came to view damage did not even attempt to look at my roof, did not bring a drone or any other equipment to view damage. Finally settled the claim and I get my renewal for this year. Surprise! They increased my 'wind and hail' deductible to $19,000 from $1,000 and my policy rate went from $2,000 to $3,000. This should be illegal. They will not change my wind deductible back to $1,000 and tried to tell me it was not due to the claim

Had a hail storm. Called roofer to check on roof. They said yes it needs to be replaced. Called and made a claim with Progressive. They sent inspector and he said, "Yes need to be replaced." Desk adjuster denied claim, saying damage on roof is 1 inch and hail was .75 and stated 1 inch hail was in 2019 when we had different insurance. I pulled the weather and it does show 1 inch hail on date of loss, but Progressive says it’s not from one of their trusted sites they use for weather. This totally makes me sick. I would stay away from this company at least for home insurance. Filed complaint with state insurance board. Might need to get an attorney. 20 roofs in neighborhood being replaced due to storm.

Had coverage for 6 years w/o claims. I had a house fire in 10/23. Progressive continuously & unreasonably delayed payments and actually had entire project (total rebuild) on hold for over 4 months without any progress at all. I was continuously lied to, denied payment for justified expenses. The unsalvageable inventory was ridiculously low-balled in terms of value. (Had about 1500 items). Was always told "next week" when I asked when to expect payments/decisions. Stay away from this Company & don't fall for their commercials. I dropped them at renewal time. Whew.

I don't normally do posts like this and complain on social media.... But maybe this will help someone. I have homeowners insurance through Progressive. Last year I received notification that before they would renew the policy the roof needed replaced due to granulation. I was told after it was done I would need to submit pictures and receipts. Which both were done. I received a call this week from progressive asking me to submit an invoice from the contractor. I said we did it ourselves I did not have a contractor. She said we needed a contractor to do it. I said that is not what the letter said and are you guys going to pay for the contractor? (On a side note they said the pictures were all good.)
Long story short after a lot of debate with 2 different employees of progressive they are not renewing. We asked them okay if we were new customers would you approve the roof? Hello.... would you approve the roof if we were new customers? No answer was given. Long story short I have auto and homeowners through a different company. So just beware progressive is not such a great company.

I only bought this house 3 years ago at which time there were no cracks or ceilings caving in - how could this be historical? Progressive won't budge, closed out my claim and now I have a damaged home that is literally crumbling by the day, boarded up and we are living in a war zone. I am writing to bring to your attention a deeply concerning issue regarding my recent experience with Progressive Home Insurance. On March 14, 2024, my home suffered significant damage due to an EF1 tornado, resulting in the destruction of my roof. Naturally, I turned to my insurance provider, Progressive Home Insurance, for assistance during this trying time. However, to my dismay, I discovered that despite faithfully paying my premiums, I received no support whatsoever from the company.
Despite filing a claim and providing all necessary documentation, Progressive Home Insurance failed to fulfill their obligations and did not provide any compensation for the damages incurred. What's more alarming is that after attempting to escalate the matter by writing to the CEO of the company, I was shocked to learn that Progressive Home Insurance is apparently defunct and no longer operational.
Furthermore, upon further investigation, it has come to my attention that none of the team members associated with Progressive Home Insurance hold valid licenses to practice insurance in the state of Ohio, where I reside. This revelation has raised serious doubts about the legitimacy of the company and the validity of the insurance policies they offer.
It is deeply concerning and distressing to realize that I have been paying premiums to a company that may not even be legitimate. My experience with Progressive Home Insurance has left me feeling betrayed and deceived, and I feel compelled to warn others about the potential risks of doing business with this company. It is essential to hold insurance companies accountable for their actions and protect consumers from being taken advantage of.

I had Progressive for about 4 years for auto and homeowners insurance. I never filed a claim for either. Then they canceled my homeowners insurance saying that it was because I lived in California. They even had me on the phone for 15 minutes, pretending to not know I live in California before they told me the news. They said it was the fire danger in CA. I told them they gave me the lowest danger rating for fire when they insured my home. They didn't care. I guess you could live in an underwater home or in Death Valley in CA and they would still think there was fire danger. Intelligence doesn't run strong with this shoddy company. They will screw you over out of the blue. I immediately went to USAA Insurance and they signed me up immediately.

After waiting 3 months for pay, they threatened to put a lien on my home if they didn’t get paid. We changed our car insurance to Progressive so bundled our home insurance also. 4 months later we got a notice that a home inspection was necessary (never needed one the 7 years we were with Geico). I emailed the inspection company and never heard back. Then 6 months later we get a notice that our insurance is not being renewed because we did not let them make an inspection. The underwriter said the inspectors contacted us multiple times. I asked for proof of an email - as they certainly did not respond to mine. Of course they did not have this. They said they left 3 voice messages - I went through every message received for 3 months and there was no message from Texas state inspectors. They do not give you a phone number that you can contact - say you can only email them.
If they make it this difficult for someone with a fairly new custom home, no claims, perfect payment record and credit score of over 800 to renew, I can only imagine what hoops and lies we would have to navigate if we had an actual claim. There is no customer service, no way to contact them and no warning of notice to stop coverage. The only correspondence we received was from an underwriter telling us they were not renewing. We jumped ship rather than start the process over as they make it very difficult to communicate and we found them to be very unethical. And that is the behavior when they are trying to get your money!
I wish I had seen all the negative reviews before I signed up. I am just very thankful that we never had anything happen during that period as I can't imagine the nightmare we would have had to deal with filing a claim. I have absolutely no faith in them making good on any damage claim payments based on the lies and red tape we already experienced. You can get better, more reliable coverage elsewhere at competitive rates.

This year when the policy renewed I was double charged the first month which I disputed but nothing happened. In October of this year I canceled the policy to which the lady was very rude and I was told I would get a refund but did not. I just called to check with them about this refund and was told I still owe them money even though the policy was canceled and I was never notified about owing this money. It was due in October and it's November 6 and still no response. They actually prefer to MAIL the check and that takes four or five days, this when they can send it securely in a matter of seconds with a state routing and account number. Backward? You bet and they flat don't care about your problems. Do yourself a BIG favor and don't hire Progressive. They don't have a customer service department with live people like their car insurance does. On September 29th of 2022, my husband and I obtained and homeowners insurance policy from Progressive to begin on October 1st of 2022. The policy was contracted to last one full year, and we paid for the policy in full at the beginning of the contract for a total of $2,095 as listed in our paperwork. On August 9th, 2023, my husband and I came back from a trip to Colorado and found a notice from Progressive in our mailbox that had been forwarded from our previous address. It stated "Unfortunately, because we didn't receive the minimum amount due requested in a previous notice, we canceled your policy as of the date shown above", which was on August 5th. Obviously, we were both quite confused as we had paid our policy premium in full at the very beginning of the policy period.
We then called Progressive, we were told that "Progressive had done some auditing and found that we were getting too much of a discount for our auto and homeowner's insurance bundle", and that we actually would owe $$414 more for the homeowner’s policy than they had originally told us and listed on all of our policy documents. We asked why they didn't send us an email like they do for our automatic withdrawals for our car insurance, and Cierra (the agent) said that they had sent one. I have looked through my inbox and through my spam folder, I never received an email regarding this premium change.
We asked why they didn't reach out to our mortgage company PennyMac, Cierra said they did reach out and didn't receive any correspondence. We reached out to a PenneyMac representative later that day and he stated that they had never received any communication from Progressive concerning our homeowner’s insurance policy beyond the day it was issued on October 1st, 2022.
Regardless of the lack of communication, had we known the actual price to begin with we would have found homeowner’s insurance elsewhere but at this point we are 10.5 months into a 12-month policy, and Progressive wants another $414 because Progressive made a mistake. Progressive and I made an agreement together with specific covenants, for a specific amount of time, for a specific amount of money, and it is entirely unfair and downright underhanded for either party to change that agreement until the policy period has ended. I wouldn't pay more money for that policy even if it was only one cent, because that was not the agreement. I feel that Progressive is behaving fraudulently in this situation, and I plan to file complaints to the appropriate entities to investigate it because their behavior is absurd and despicable.
