About Policygenius Life Insurance

Policygenius is committed to simplifying life insurance shopping by providing jargon-free explanations and easy-to-use tools to calculate coverage needs. The quote tool provides offers from 13 life insurance providers and displays the best quotes for the customer. All further application requirements — such as a medical exam — must be completed with the insurance provider.

Policygenius Life Insurance coverage & terms

Customers shopping for term- and whole-life insurance on Policygenius can choose coverage limits between $5,000 and $10 million.. The company's partners offer whole-life insurance and term-life insurance with lengths between 10 and 40 years.

Though whole life insurance is an option, Policygenius recommends most young, healthy individuals choose a term length based on the length of their financial responsibility. In other words, an adult with young children or a 20-year mortgage is only financially responsible for those for about 20 or 25 years and should choose a 25-year term.

Whole life insurance, according to Policygenius, is best for older people, those with health conditions and people who are looking for smaller amounts of coverage.

Policygenius also recommends a coverage amount around 10 times a person's yearly income. For example, an adult with young children, a mortgage and an income of $50,000 should consider a policy that pays out $500,000.

Policygenius representatives can help customers navigate their needs and find which types are offered by providers, including:

  • Simplified issue life insurance
  • Guaranteed issue life insurance
  • Final expense insurance
  • Variable life insurance

How much does Policygenius Life Insurance cost?

Customers shopping for term- and whole-life insurance on Policygenius can choose coverage limits between $5,000 and $10 million. The company’s partners offer whole-life insurance and term-life insurance with lengths between 10 and 40 years. Significant cost indicators for life insurance include:

  • Age
  • Health status
  • Family history

Younger people in good health with a history of healthy family members pay significantly less for their life insurance.

Customers can minimize premiums by opting into lower coverage amounts and terms. However, if you choose a smaller amount of coverage and a shorter term, you may need to purchase another policy later in life, which costs more. As Policygenius’ monthly premiums are fixed for the term, it's more cost-effective to purchase a longer policy at a fixed price when you’re younger.

Policygenius Life Insurance FAQ

Are Policygenius agents affiliated with insurance providers?

No, Policygenius agents are independent brokers who recommend a provider based on a customer’s profile, coverage needs and budget.

How does Policygenius make money?

As an independent broker, Policygenius receives a commission every time a customer chooses a provider recommended by a Policygenius agent. The commission is built into the price of your policy and Policygenius charges no additional fees, so you’re still getting the lowest price available.

Does Policygenius require a medical exam for life insurance?

Policygenius does not require customers to get a medical exam before receiving a quote, but your provider might require one before activating the policy. If the quote Policygenius provided changes after completing a medical exam, you can ask your agent to find a better solution with another provider.

From the outset, I was 100% forthcoming and transparent regarding my medical conditions, providing every detail requested to ensure an accurate preliminary quote. Despite this complete disclosure, Policygenius provided an initial lowball premium quote that created an entirely false expectation of affordability. I relied on this figure as I moved forward with the application. The deception became clear when the final offer arrived. Not only was the policy quoted at the wrong coverage amount and the wrong term length than what I had requested, but the premium itself was increased by nearly $100 per month—This rate hike was delivered after the medical information had been assessed, confirming that the initial quote was a deliberate effort to lure me into the process.

When I contacted Policygenius to demand an explanation for this unconscionable change and the discrepancy in terms, I requested a copy of the recording of my initial conversation with their representative to prove the original quote and my full disclosure. Policygenius has refused to respond to this request for documentation, demonstrating a profound lack of transparency and a clear avoidance of accountability. This entire episode clearly points to a bait-and-switch scheme designed to capture consumers and then subject them to drastically different and unwarranted rates. As a direct result of these unethical and deceptive practices, I have terminated my relationship with Policygenius. I am immediately filing formal complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report Policygenius for these fraudulent and predatory tactics.

Don't trust them. Quoted one price, I agreed, and then the price rose. I agreed again, and the agent told me I was pre-approved. I signed the insurance application, but then didn't have the option to pay. I kept checking over the next few days and the status said that my insurance was still being reviewed, even though the agent said that I was definitely approved. Then when it was finally approved, the price went up again and I had this message: "I understand I had an option of a lower first payment amount based on younger insurance age which was valid until 3/29/2025. I agree to make the first payment based on my current insurance age." Except that there was no way for me to make a payment on 3/29 since they had held up the approval.

While filling out the online form to get a quote, they first they said most policies would require a phone call at some point. I asked which policies do not require a phone call since I do not own a phone. They then replied that ALL policies require a phone call. I then had to ask that all my personal information be removed from their website. They said they would review my request. I should have been able to remove my own personal information, which I was not.

I was presented with fake quotes that were lower than what my health qualifies for. They knew about my diabetes history and showed fake quotes. NOT good. People should be 100% honest when showing quotes and this website did not do that. Rather than enticed me to apply for something I could not qualify for.

The estimated rates I was quoted before I applied for life insurance were not even close to the premium on the policy I was eventually offered. My policy premium was three times as much as they estimated. The underwriting process took literally months. This was a complete waste of time and I would never use them again.

I called in to obtain some information on life insurance for my wife who has diabetes. Agent was not properly trained and provided false information to us. Very disappointed to see them try and trick us with fake quotes. This means in reality, the real cost of life insurance would be 3 to 4 times higher than what they quoted me.

Maybe this works for some people, but this is supposed to be an online process. Their advertisement is "Compare and Buy Insurance Online"--just google it and see. So I submit their online information and nothing for several days. Finally one day I answer a phone call identified as "Potential Spam" just to see who has been calling. It's Austega from Policy Genius. First comment from her is to confirm my birthday and zip code. Really? This was supposed to be an online process; and if you want to talk on the phone, then you should have a published number and your agents should provide an extension that can be reached by calling an accepted number. But no; you call me---from a blocked number that Verizon identifies as spam and want me to start answering questions with personal information. How many data breaches have we already had? This is a terrible security practice. I politely told her "no thanks". I'll go elsewhere. Be careful people.

      Dear Mike,

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. I am sorry we did not meet your expectations. Obtaining quotes with Policygenius includes a brief phone call so a licensed agent can communicate the life insurance options available to you, and initiate an application for you if you wish. I apologize for the confusion for our phone number coming up as spam. That is something we are working to rectify so that our number is clearly labelled as Policygenius, but unfortunately with some carriers our number is not clearly labelled. Verifying date of birth and zip-code is a standard part of our process to make sure we are speaking with the customer who submitted the online inquiry. However, if you expressed concerns with providing information to an unknown number, the licensed agent should have offered to provide you with our phone number so you could call us back. I want to apologize if this did not occur. Our phone number is 855-695-2255 which is listed at the bottom of our website, policygenius.com.

      Complete waste of my time.

      1) The nurse sent out by AIG did not wear his mask properly for the entire visit. And was 30 minutes late after I had been fasting all day.

      2) Initially quoted at $221 a month. I was expecting that given my nicotine history. However, after waiting a month for them to get medical records from my doctor, the rate was 2x that due to one ER visit I had two years ago. I sent numerous messages to the broker explaining the hospitalization, and how there were no underlying health issues discovered, that I was given the all-clear, etc.

All in all, I waited more than two months on a decision that was unacceptable.

      Dear Brian,

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. I’m sorry you have had a disappointing experience with Policygenius.

With regards to your medical exam: we work with a third party medical vendor to arrange medical exams, and I apologize that the medical examiner who visited you was late and was not properly masked. I have submitted a formal complaint about this to the medical vendor, on your behalf. I also apologize that the final price you received from AIG exceeded our earlier estimate. We provided that first estimate to you based on the information you shared with us on our website and in our discussion on the phone, and that quote is subject to change. After the medical exam, the insurance underwriters have the ability to make a complete and final assessment of risk and arrive at a final price. In this case, we could have done a better job at providing an accurate estimate for you, and we will review this case as a team to determine how we can do better.

If we can help you explore other insurance options, we would love to do that, and I have contacted you privately to discuss this more.

      Thank you,

I tried to apply for a life insurance policy, but due to straight-up discrimination, my application was never even submitted. One of the steps is to talk with an agent and go through your medical history. I called and spoke to my agent and we went through a brief questionnaire. During our conversation, I revealed I was on the autism spectrum. He had an audible reaction to this and then asked me "how I experience autism". I gave a brief overview of my symptoms and explained that it doesn't negatively impact my life or my health.

He said he wasn't sure if he could submit me for life insurance. He would talk to the underwriters and get back to me. Weeks went by and I never received any updates. So I called in to check the status of my application only to learn they had never submitted it at all. I am perfectly healthy and never in a million years would have expected my diagnosis of "traits common to Aspergers" to change my ability to receive service from an insurance aggregator. This is plain out discrimination.

      Hi Erin,

      Thank you for your feedback.

We are a growing enterprise, and critical feedback like yours is necessary and helpful for us to improve. While no one likes to get called out publicly, it does demonstrate how poor your experience was and the need for us to improve.

Our agents service members of the community with a wide range of pre-existing conditions, health impairments, and past medical procedures, and need to ask a number of questions to provide the most accurate quotes upfront. As we can always do better, we have provided feedback to the agent on how to have best handled your case. After further investigation we can confirm that the agent did not follow through in submitting your request for quotes, though I have personally submitted your information to obtain quotes for you. I do apologize for these errors that ultimately caused the delay in providing the quotes. We will be providing additional training around better follow through with this specific agent. Further, your case has been escalated to our management team to help keep it on the right path.

I would be happy to speak with you by phone about your concerns. Please feel free to give me a call at your convenience so we can provide a personalized experience to you. Thank you again for taking the time to bring this issue to our attention and I will be emailing you as soon as I have obtained your preliminary quotes.

      Sincerely,

      Jeremy
