This company, New York Life was recommended by a friend so I took the plunge. Months later, I had not received any communications on my investment. I reached out to my friend to find out what was going on...Soon after, a meeting was set up. I entered the meeting to find the room full of People. SO apologetic, blah blah blah...to this date, I have not heard from this company since meeting. Almost a year.

My company provided LTD coverage through NYL. They have been totally uncooperative and absolutely dishonest. Unfortunately they are regulated by ERiSA which gives them the legal right to deny claims for any reason, despite conclusive evidence that the claim is valid. It's just a numbers game to them - their business model relies on people just giving up.

They can't find my account with my ID number, they can't find my account with my Social, app doesn't work so I can't follow any forms if there is any forms I need to file. My agent, knowing that I was unfamiliar with life insurance, omitted some key information that led me to believe I could use my policy like a high-yield savings account and cash it in when I needed it (alive though). When I found out that wasn't the case, I was already out thousands of dollars in payments. I thought it strange that though I kept paying into the policy, its value did not increase. When I asked my agent about this, he replied that I should keep paying for about 10 years at which point the account would "mature" and I would see its value go up.

After a year or so, this agent was replaced with another, who told me the straight truth of the matter--that this was a life insurance policy and there is no cashing in or using it to grow wealth that you might use during your life. So yeah! Two stars because the deceitful agent got replaced with the truthful one. But the whole experience was very bitter. If I ever decide to get life insurance in the future, it will be with a different company.

NYL was nothing but trouble for my short term disability claim. They would hold 4-6 weeks of payment claiming it was the Dr. fault but they made excessive records requests and were very slow to pay their invoices. Anything not to pay. In the end I had to get my own records and pay to have multiple pages sent via fax

NY Life long term care policy owners need to be aware of a sleazy way they cheat their policyholders. When a person is approved and receiving long term care benefits, they no longer pay their premium, yet they are billed anyway. NY Life uses a separate company to process claims who is most likely incentivized to keep claims and cost down. By billing people for premiums even when they are approved for benefits is a clever way to add revenue while having deniability that it was intentional.

Computers do not lie, they are programmed to do things including sending out statements, invoices and bills. If a policyholder is billed when they shouldn't be, every policyholder is being billed therefore it isn't an error for an individual but an across-the-board scheme to fraud people. How many policyholders do not know or are too frail to understand and continue to pay? Most likely thousands. Fortunately, I caught this for my mother (she never would have) and I'm alerting anyone comes to this site to beware.

My employer just switched from Prudential to NYL. We’ve only used them for two weeks and their customer service has been HORRIBLE to work with. I’m having a baby any day and no one is clear on what needs to be done for my short term disability no matter how many times I chat or call. But the worst part of the entire experience is that they openly admitted they allow their chat reps to hang up on you if you ask too many questions! On 1/17 I live chatted with Gwynda C who rudely disconnected on me. I live chatted again and was told by Kerry Y that “if there is back and forth regarding a claim, we can disconnect the chat. The supervisors are aware of that as well.” There was back and forth because she was incompetent to answer my questions, and yet you allow your chatters to do this?

I called in to ask for a supervisor, was told they have no idea who the chat supervisor is, and that I would get a call back later in the day. Surprisingly…I never got a call back. I have to continue to contact my HR at work since there is nothing else I can do to get a clear answer on how to get my short term disability payout. While Prudential did take a long time to pay out their claims, their process was clear and their customer service was 100% better. I would NEVER suggest any company use NYL for their employees.

I think every single person who works there has deep psychopathic tendencies because NONE of them care or have any humanity in them at all. There is not a single claim that they feel is legit, so they just use the DENY, DELAY & DEFEND tactic to wear people down. The important thing is that since everybody who works there is a psychopath, they all sleep very well knowing the lives they’ve destroyed.

If I could, I would give NYL 0 stars. They have robbed me of nearly $5000. In the first incident, based on their representative’s advice, I deposited over $800,000 with them. When I asked for my money, they refused to pay me the interest and would not give me an explanation. The interest was approximately $3000.

The most recent incident, I was charge $1800 pre-payment penalty. When I called them before requesting the transfer, their agent didn’t inform me that the penalty would go away in 18 months. After putting in the request, I got a call from one of their agents trying to persuade me not to roll over the IRA. He informed me that I could take out $37000, now and the rest in 18 months time. I agreed to follow his advice. NYL transferred the full amount less than pre-payment penalty. When my advisor and I called them they told us that could reverse the payment but they would not return the pre-payment penalty. Needless to say, I will never invest another cent with NYL, nor will I recommend them to anyone else.

Make a long story They kepted telling me they didn't get the doctor's faxes so I had the doctors email it to me. I uploaded on the site. It took them until Sept 11 to tell me they denied my claim. So I sent a written letter in on 9/11th then from 9/11 to 9/20 it took them that long to send my request over to the appeal department.

If you call ask for a sup they're never available nor will they call back. Your case manager the one I had was never there and she never returned my calls. Her name was Ani, (she is horrible) then in the appeal dept I was assigned to Joseph and he is never in the office. Nor do they call back. I spoke to Gabriel on 9/27 who told me to send in the notes from my appointments but what she didn't tell me was if they have already sent your file to the appeal department to be reviewed and send in some documents days later then more days later they will pull your claim from the que. To attach what you just sent in which then starts the whole process over the 2 week process. They are dragging their feet. Horrible company to work with. I called many days in a row to ask if they got a hold of her and never talked to the same person twice, so how do they know that the contact has actually been made? They prefer to use physical mail which means that by the time you actually get the paperwork they send, you only have maybe 1-2 days to complete it until they close out your STD/FMLA request. They send so much paperwork that you don't know what you need to complete. On top of my actual temporary mental illness, this has caused me so much stress. NY Life is literally stealing from me. I was given mistaken advice from my benefits supplier, and I applied for Disability insurance. Shortly after the application I realized that I didn't need this coverage. Per NY Life's instructions I sent in the form to cancel. I called shortly after and months before the policy even took effect and to ensure they had received my cancellation. They did. However, the policy went into effect anyway. Almost 8 months later they are still taking money from my check every week. I have called them at least a dozen times and spent hours and hours on hold. When I call, they always say that they DO see the cancellation, but don't know what is going on. They always promise to call me back, but NEVER do. Their call center must be only a few people because I get the same reps every time.

John is the supervisor and always promises to call me with updates, but NEVER does. He even tells me the exact day I will hear from him, so I wait by my phone all day and call never comes. I have to call the center and wait on hold for literally an hour each time. The worst part is I already have disability insurance, so if I needed it, I'm not sure I could even use this policy because I am insured through my employer already. They owe me refund for the past 6+ months. The most ridiculous part is I went on maternity leave, (Yes, I was on hold and dealing with this for hours the day before I gave birth and while I was postpartum.) the coverage lapsed. I called and said don't reinstate it, BUT THEY DID anyway. Like I said, they are literally stealing from me.

I have read all these reviews about New York life and they all say the same thing. Everybody pays into the insurance but when it comes time to collect you are just an annoyance. I have been hung up redirected and bullied throughout this whole experience. My wife had a store in July instead of using short-term dis. She used her PTO but when that was exhausted she sent in a claim for shore disability in the new year. They denied her claim because they said it was an existing condition and when I asked what else I could do the agent blew me off to another department that had no idea what I was talking about. We then filed for her long-term disability because that's what they told us our notion was and directed us to do so.

After sending in countless documents and sitting on hold for hours and hours at a time we were told the information still wasn't enough. They have all her medical records. They have doctors' reports and nurses' notes. All the things you would think were enough. We are still waiting for any kind of communication. We are about to lose my wife's insurance and when that happens how is a person supposed to recover when they are counting on the very insurance needed to recover? We have exhausted what little savings we had left and can't even get food stamps. We understand that this is only supposed to be a supplement for income but when you pay into it and need to count on it at the worst point in your life then what good is the insurance in the first place?

I am disabled. I already had multiple disabling conditions for years but then I became officially too sick to work in 2020. It all became too much when I became sick with yet another disabling chronic disease and then a whole other a few years later. I first went through Reed Group for my short term disability (STD) and then was switched to long term disability (LTD) with New York Life through my employer. At the time they were Cigna. NYL bought Cigna. Which was a shame, because they were more understanding and patient.

New York Life uses multiple manipulation and gaslighting tactics to force you to give up. They want to harass and threaten you so that you are so overwhelmed you cancel your claim. Many people do cancel because they are unwell and the psychological tactics and pressure this company uses is downright deceptive and should be unlawful.

They lie and say they haven’t received paperwork from doctors when the doctor's office clearly states they have multiple times. They harass the doctors every few months to the point the staff that handles these claims becomes irritated. I don’t want my doctor’s offices being harassed. Those are the people trying to actually help me.

They pull little maneuvers like sending you an important time-limited and threatening letter that’s dated January 4th, but you don’t receive it on the online portal until January 29th and in the actual Mail until February 5th. There is no postmark on their letter envelopes (only IMB postal codes) so you can’t defend yourself and say that you weren’t given enough time to respond because they date their letters way before it’s physically sent.

You never have the same claim manager during reviews. I’ve been through so many different ones. Often when they leave voicemails, the quality is so awful you can’t understand what they are saying. It’s a strange skipping/glitching sound. Their response is “oh my headset is broken” but yet when you are physically on the phone with them, it’s all of a sudden fixed? Okay.

And good luck getting ahold of your claim manager in person. This is problematic because by not having one single claim manager, you have to constantly start over and prove and defend yourself and your disability and conditions to different people. It’s made to be that way on purpose. There is no single advocate who can get to know you and your conditions as time goes on. Someone you can continually communicate with and update and get to know. Perhaps this is a tactic used by NYL executives so that their claim managers don’t start to empathize with their clients because then they humanize us humans.

I have a doctor who refuses to do any disability paperwork. They tell their patients to contact another sort of parent company to get medical records. I have told NYL over ten times that they can’t contact that one doctor directly and that they have to contact this other place for medical records, yet they don’t do it. I fax them, call them, upload all of my medical documents online. And yet “we haven’t received medical records for Dr. *** and if we don’t receive them your claim could be terminated”.

I have sent in all the medical records, appointment summary notes, appointment dates, etc countless times for my many doctors. During this last review, my new claims manager actually said there were “too many medical records” - as if now having too many is now points against me. Yet I’m receiving letters saying they don’t have all the information needed? Okay.

They constantly want me to prove I’m disabled even though all of my multiple conditions are chronic and I have been proved as disabled by the SSA. They are consistently given a long list of disabling conditions that don’t change and many have no proven medications or treatments for. Now they are threatening to send me to their “Independent Medical Examiner” which is actually just a NURSE who is paid by the insurance company. Read that again: they are paid by NYL.

I have multiple specialists who don’t understand my other conditions because that’s not their specialty. There are no specialists out there who have experience in all medical fields such as Rheumatology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Cardiology, Urology, GI, Psychiatry, Psychology, Physical Therapy, etc. I have doctors in all of those fields. So it is absolutely and unequivocally impossible for a paid “nurse” that will be able to ever understand all of my chronic conditions, let alone understand how they impact me minute by minute, hour by hour and day by day…especially when no specialist doctor can. Not to mention all the awful side effects from the long list of medications I take for these conditions. Is the nurse a pharmacist too?

There have been many times I have been in tears when on the phone with NYL. They bring me to a point of emotional and physical exhaustion, causing anxiety, pain and panic. I have Autism, but they don’t seem to even want to count that as one of my problems/issues and Autism is a neurological disorder, not a mental health problem. It greatly impacts my ability to work and even to handle these constant medical reviews they drag me through and the pressure this company constantly puts me under.

There is no empathy. No sympathy. No advocating. They will do anything possible to push you beyond your limits when you are sick. It doesn’t matter if it’s just $300 a month, they look for any reason to stop paying you. Even this review here on Consumer Affairs could be damaging for me and cause my claim to be terminated simply because I have “written something”. But here’s the catch: it’s taken me over two hours to type this due to my Dystonia so far. But see…those details don’t matter to them. They can’t see the pain I’m in trying to type each and every word. How hard it is to uncurl my spasming arm and hand to type each letter and word as the pain spreads into my shoulder and neck. No, they just will see that I have typed something and could use it against me.

You are nothing but a number to them and they will pull all the scary tactics to push you to your limits. It’s nearly criminal. It is cruel. And I fear it will never be regulated and they will never be held liable for the psychological damage they cause people. So that’s why I have taken nearly three hours (now) out of my time to patiently write this. And I am mostly writing this so that others don’t feel less alone in their exhaustion and anxiety when it comes to dealing with New York Life. It’s not just me they do this to, they do this to everyone – as you can clearly read in these reviews from other people. They must be held accountable.

I took our an Flex Annuity with New York Life Canada in March 1988. This annuity matures in 2030. I checked on it recently to find out they have no record of it. Apparently my annuity was sold to another company in 1994. Nothing was ever told to me that this was happening. The new company has no record of it either. I've made 17 calls and 4 emails to date to New York Life and they are doing nothing. I'm being told it was sold. The other Company said it was not. Since I received nothing from New York life that shows a transfer happened, I can only conclude that it was not. They have my money for 35 years, worth much more today. This was for my retirement. I'm devastated. They don't care, I feel like I've been robbed.

The whole claim process is horrible. I clearly had a 100% disability. I submitted claim and over 50 pages of dr notes, test, etc. It went days under review with the run around. Then they supposedly had their nurses review which said I was not disabled. I was going to have a lawyer take over claim. The next day case manager said he talked with supervisor reviewed and it was approved. I requested copy of policy. I never received. I had been told one thing by one person and another by others about how and when I would receive payment.

It’s been 20 days since approval and still no payment. I don’t know anywhere in the world it takes over 10 days to receive a check. In all they just don’t want to pay their clients and take their time when I pay for a service that is needed especially in this time. It’s hard to focus on getting better when you have to fight for what you’re entitled to. This company definitely causes a financial burden when in a crisis already. I’ve been on disability before and it was the easiest process. I do not recommend this company. They lie and do not have your best interest.

First off, it takes anywhere from 40min-2hrs to get ahold of anyone. I’ve tried calling my leave manager multiple times and left messages and she never calls back-Danisha! I am a nurse and broke my ankle so obviously I am not able to return work until it fully heals since I’m on my feet all shift. They put a start date of my leave for the very next day after my last day worked (5/6/2022) rather than from the date of injury (5/7/2022) or the date I would’ve worked my next shift after Injury (5/11/2022).

My doctor wrote I needed to be off for approx 8 wks with a date to be off from 5/10-7/5, which I was fine with because I wasn’t due back to work until 5/11. They approved my leave from 5/6 until 6/30, because they said my doctor said I needed to be off for approx 8 weeks and completely disregarded the leave dates he gave. They said the doctor contradicted himself because he said 8 weeks to be off, but wrote a specific date to return to work 9weeks after injury. With that date being given the company is counting the 8 weeks from the day after my last day worked, not 8 weeks of the injury or even 8 weeks from the start my doctor put as a starting date for the leave (5/10), which 7/5 does equate to 8 weeks and that’s what he put!

Now I’m in the position where I am needing to have my leave extended and I have to have my doctor fill out all their paperwork AGAIN with him needing to make sure he follows their word games to ensure I am able to keep my job until I am able to go back. I’m on FMLA leave without being eligible for short term disability at the moment because I am in a contingent position working full time hours. I’m so frustrated at the sheer ignorance, stupidity, and the word games for them defending the wrong dates that my doctor didn’t even write for when it was faxed back to the company. Congrats on being incompetent!

Beware of being talked into a NY Life Annuity... At this point, I recommend knowing and understanding the answer to at least the 6 questions below before locking in an annuity. If I had known the actual growth and penalty I WOULD NOT have opted for an annuity that I would have to pay them to get a portion of my money back.

What is the bottom line growth rate after expenses?
Is there a Maturity Date, and When is it?
How much money do I lose each year, if I withdraw before maturity?
How many years do I expect to live?
How many years before I expect to start withdrawing or needing a monthly stipend from my savings?

What interest rate would I have to earn to exceed the amount Annuity would pay at the beginning of #5?

In 2016 I was told my Annuity would earn 5% but in reality it ONLY earns 00.35% a year. After holding and using my $250,000 for 5 years the annuity has only grown $4,000 and they are charging me $12,000 to get $243,000 a portion of my original investment back. How it actually works is, they are charging me $7,000 to use my $250,000 for 5 years. IF I INVESTED THE $250,00 in a S&P500 index fund in August of 2016 it would be worth $510,019.93 in May of 2021. IT seems they had the opportunity to make at least $250,000 during the 5 years they had my money and are charging me $7,000 for using my money. Best Advice is to get advice from a fiduciary company you pay for advice, not an investment organization that makes their money from investments they recommend.

I applied for insurance, and first was told I was denied because I took a "COVID test". I had to call and explain to the adjuster that I did not take a COVID test, but rather the antibody test to see if I've had it in the past. He requested I send a copy of my negative results, which I did. I didn't hear from him for weeks, and when I called back, he confirmed he hadn't changed my status from denied. I finally received my approval paperwork in the mail, but with a rider that if my disability was due to mental health, I wouldn't be covered. This was because I was prescribed a common mental health medication for a mild diagnosis that millions of Americans have.

I've never been admitted into an outpatient/inpatient program, I'm mentally stable, and my primary care doctor prescribed my medication, not a psychiatrist. My hope is that our culture is moving in a direction to embrace mental health support, but this rider was highly disappointing that if I were to have a severe mental health issue (which I've never had in the past), I wouldn't receive assistance while I get better. I work in the mental health field, and found this to be highly discriminatory against people who have mental health history, which is the overwhelming majority of Americans.

I was trying to set up an annuity with them and we went through all the details and set everything up with their agent and I wrote them a check and they cashed it. We went through the entire process and then some later they said sorry they are going to reject me from getting an annuity because my income is too low. It was a one time lump sum I was giving them so they could invest it for my retirement. They cashed the check and they knew the money was good. I don't understand why my income matters in the slightest, as they already had my payment upfront and they would never be any payments from me in the future. They take all their money as percentage of the money made on the investments in the annuity. So I don't at all understand how they could deny me for not having enough income when it is entirely irrelevant to the annuity.

I would understand it, if they thought I was giving them too much money for my income level, and they suspected I was cheating on my taxes, or was working off the books in something illegal and they didn't want part in that, but that isn't the case. I filed all the paperwork to show where the money was coming from and that wasn't the issue. The issue is they said my income is too low for the annuity I wanted, even though it was a one time payment on my part and I would never be required to add money to it.

I guess they just think they're too good for my money, or they are not interested in my business as they don't think they can upsell me on other services in the future. I don't know. They didn't really bother to explain their reasons to me. Either way I am very disappointed in their company and if they don't want my money I guess I will go else where.

My experience with a Long Term Care policy fits the profile perfectly. The company has good customer service until the claim is made, then NYL will play every angle to avoid paying, responses will become glacial, and new conditions will be introduced. Now in my 40s I have much better insurance and no need for the old policy. I have tried 3x to cancel it and surrender my policy to get the cash value funds. They give you the run around when you call and make you fill out a paper form that they only accept by fax or mail. How they can do business like that in today's age of technology is astounding.

After faxing the form 3 times and not being mailed a check I am livid. The longer they hold off on sending you a check the lower amount they pay out as the cash value keeps decreasing. This is obviously an intentional policy. They won't give you the name or contact number for anyone specific and the only way I was able to get a "request for callback" was to tell them I would be leaving multiple online reviews. I applied for whole life insurance thru the agent that handles my annuity with them. (That's another story.) I had to go for a medical checkup thru them & answer the usual medical questions. Over 20 yrs. ago I had hepatitis (The Baby Boomer problem). I received treatment & was cured of my hepatitis. I had been periodically checked thru the next few years & had no recurrence. Now they also had access to my medical records but claimed that I never had follow up testing which is **. Anyway my agent asked if I'd be willing to do some more blood work to prove I no longer had hepatitis, I agreed, of course it came back negative.

Now after 20 yrs & a test I'm apparently still a risk? So anyone that has had Baby Boomer Hepatitis can't get whole life insurance anywhere. (I say this because I ran into the same problem with numerous other companies, I can't even list them all.) Because of that I figured that as long as NYL had my business for another product I might have better luck. Obviously not even when I agreed to have more blood work to prove my health was good. Most people would have refused especially after a 20 yr. span with no Hep in sight. This in no way reflects on my agent who actually spoke with them about it, even he couldn't fathom that kind of reasoning. (Is that reasoning???)

Anyway if you aren't completely healthy & have never had ANY medical problems in your WHOLE life you shouldn't waste your time with this company whether you're searching for whole life or term insurance, especially judging by the rest of the reviews on this company's customer service on anything relating to insurance, either getting it or getting them to honor their policies, when needed.

Couple months later, my husband had stroke and I trying to fill disability for my husband. They said they have to review the case . About 5 months later, (May 29, 2019) they told my husband his insurance will be canceled because my husband gave incorrect answer. Reason: the question asked, "At age 18 or over, has insured ever used tobacco, nicotine or any nicotine substitution product in any form?" And blaming was answered: No by my husband.

This is a scam company, because I was there with my husband. Their agent asked question in Vietnamese due to my husband doesn’t understand much English. He didn’t asked exactly like that. He just asked my husband in Vietnamese, “Did you ever smoke?" My husband said, ”Yes, but quitted about 5 years ago.“ Now until I filed a claim for my husband, they denied a claimed and told us their decision to cancel my husband insurance. This is a scam and blaming on us for incorrect answer. I will talk to this agent to give us a wrong information when helped us fill out a questions, and if still denying, I will find a lawyer to fight for customer rights.

If you are purchasing a short or long term disability policy from New York Life, expect to be left in the dark and a cold shoulder when its time for them to uphold their end of the deal. Our agent was as good as any agent, but this was because he is personally a great guy. However, as a whole New York Life has a major barrier between their organization and their members. Other than their life insurance portal, New York Life (NYL) has no online member services and will not send any copies of your policy.

We purchased our short and long term disability through NYL and it took well over 4 months for them to process our paperwork. With no member portal to access our account, we had no idea this 4 month delay had even happened. When we signed, it had a start date of one month from the date of signing for the start of our Short-Term Disability policy. Every other policy we purchased began, except our Short Term Disability. We received No notification of the start of our policy and no account summary to even understand what the policy covered and when our coverage actually had begun. This strategy, to keep their members in the dark, seems to be a pattern across the organization. Fine print excuses and no policy to reference, we were completely dis-empowered as a member.

A year and some odd months later, we needed to submit a claim for my wife's maternity leave. We were told that it was denied for a "pre-existing condition". If we signed the policy over a year prior to her getting pregnant, how could we have possibly known she was to become pregnant? Even if the policy went into effect 5 months after our signing of the contract, still we could not have known my wife would become pregnant. We had received no paperwork regarding our account and were left in the dark until the denial letter for the claim came in the mail.

We appealed and again requested a copy of our policy and the terms (fine print) contained in it. No policy paperwork ever came and with no online portal we were left paralyzed as members. The appeal was quickly denied and we never received an explanation as to how they determined this "pre-existing condition" (other than some ineligible policy mumbo jumbo) nor a notification (or apology) as to why our policy took over 4 months to be processed. Ultimately, we never received any paperwork on our policy and no effort from NYL to talk to us or explain their mistake and the confusion it caused.

Unfortunately, this conglomerate is not concerned with its members. We were disregarded and overlooked during a major period in our lives, after we had thoughtfully planned and purchased a policy that should have covered us through such a life changing event (both out of work to care for our newborn). While there is no online portal for their disability customers, there is a member portal for their Life Insurance customers (policies we also have). Yet, we do not feel confident that (god forbid something did happen to us) that our life insurance policy would actually cover anything. The fear that they will find some technicality or fine print that alleviates them from ever paying any claims is the impression we are left with. And worse, no intention to make their policy details known to their customers.

Honestly, I would tell everyone to stay away from NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE. My ex-husband had life insurance policy with them for 15 years with our children as beneficiaries. He died unexpectedly and when I filed the claim with New York Life, they simply denied the claim due to the deceased having missed 2 monthly payments of $28/month. He had this policy for 15 years and always paid. Before his sudden death, he became ill but did not tell anyone about it. All of his bills fell behind including the auto-pay for the premium of his life insurance. You would think that after paying a policy for 15 years without ever missing a payment, the company would pay but it's not the case. They didn't bother to notify him that his policy had lapsed. I am actually in the market right to purchase life insurance but there is no way I will ever deal with NEW YORK LIFE - THEY ARE THE WORSE!!

I used to work for NYL... They have some great products as long as you have an agent that is actually explaining all of the pros and cons to you. Employees are paid on commission only - bonuses on top of qualifying commissions. Management talks a lot about "doing what is right for the consumer" but I have personally seen so many times where the opposite is done and management will limit what they suggest an agent do based on the licenses of the agent. Customer service is pretty good if you are a client only, and not an employee.

The company has high sales quotas and a revolving door of new hires. They have the capability of doing full service financial advising but will more often than not tell you to put a bunch of money into whole life policies - employees get paid better on those and management gets bonuses on how much "production" new agents do. Most everything they do and say is for the paycheck. I don't think whole life is a scam but I think they try to get clients to commit to way too much and will recommend it for everyone. Finances aren't a one-size fits all. I didn't do well because I'm honest and care more about the client than the company.

A friend of mine who was an agent for NYL advised me to open both a term policy and whole life policy about a year and a half ago. When I unexpectedly got laid off this year, I was unable to make my very high premium payments on the whole life policy, so I worked with my agent for over a month on the surrender of the policy. He informed me that I would get a check for approximately 20% of what I'd put into the policy thus far. When the check finally arrived (2 months after I surrendered the policy) it was less than 1% of the value that I had put into the policy up to this point. Furthermore, I randomly get calls from varying agents about my term policy... It seems there is no coordination and certainly no honesty associated with this company. So basically, if you want to just donate money to major corporation with any unlikely payout at the end, stick with NYL. If not, I'd recommend avoiding this scam altogether.

Almost a decade ago, a professional acquaintance (NYL agent at the time) approached us to enroll in life insurance. We weren't familiar with life insurance options, so trusted the agent to guide us in our best interests. The agent had us sign up for Whole Life. Several years ago, we contacted the agent because we were concerned with the high monthly premiums that kept increasing yearly. The agent tried to deter our request for a lower coverage, then later just simply ignored our requests. Previous to that, our yearly meetings would end up in us paying more. Then, we simply ignored NYL thereafter, but never cancelled our auto-paying premiums that kept increasing yearly. We have paid an average of $280 per month for whole life.

Now, since enrolling in Financial Peace University, we see that Whole Life is not the way to go - it is unnecessary, costs way too much, and the cash value portion gives little return. Buying term insurance allows you to then invest the remaining that you would've paid on whole insurance in a mutual fund, IRA, etc. We've also been disappointed with the lack of online resources - like online chat - to take care of our NYL needs. We would prefer to not meet with another agent who'll simply try to persuade us to buy more insurance and not listen to us. In going through brokers for insurance quotes, they supply non-biased quotes, and none of those quotes are from NYL. This, as well as our experience with NYL thus far, are reasons we are looking to leave NYL. Recommending all life insurance consumers to get educated. Whole life is not the way to go. Agents make commissions on whole life - thus pushing consumers to enroll in it.

(even though the bank account was ours.) The CSR we spoke to had us fill out paperwork, fax it in and go from there. The online form would not allow us to use it since we didn't own the business.

See a pattern here? NYL sets you up for failure and makes it impossible to drop your policy. So the CSR said the other "best bet" was to cancel the bank draft. We did with our bank but somewhere the bank didn't cancel both auto drafts, just one. So we found that our account was still getting auto drafted and now we are out $2,200 and no recourse to recover the money because NYL says they had access granted to do it, by us. Ok. Maybe so, but funny how they only canceled a policy for me at $29.59 and not the other policy for $191.00. Our eyes are now open NYL is a SCAM, they don't care about their customers and they will STEAL from you. DO NOT WORK WITH NEW YORK LIFE! It will not serve you well.

Meanwhile I finally spoke to one in February once again stating I keep making these payments on a policy I do not want and I want to change it. I set a mtg with a agent for the end of March when I returned from a trip, I asked the call center to freeze my payments until I changed my policy as the policy I had I no longer wanted. I was told ok, meanwhile they drafted my account again in March. I then called and told them this is not the way I want to do business as I have no point of contact and this is completely unprofessional. They cannot put me in touch with one person and they clearly cannot listen to hold my payments until I meet with someone to change my policy. They then refunded my funds for that month in no way telling me they were then giving me my cash value back.

I called today to see what is going on and where my termination letter was. They then proceeded to tell me that I am past due on my payments and the cash value though not a lot, had been used for my last payments. Working with New York Life insurance has been the most unprofessional experience of working with a financial institution in my life. GEBA and New York Life Insurance Company “BEWARE”. If you are looking for life insurance stay away from GEBA and New York Life!!! They will change the conditions of the insurance on you and there is nothing you can do about it except “lose a lot of money”. I purchased a “life insurance policy” thru GEBA in May 1994. Three years ago when I turned 65 the policy benefit was cut in half, at which time I called GEBA and talked to someone who explained the reduction schedule to me in great detail. I was thinking about cancelling when I called, but I had already invested so much money in the policy. When I was told that the reduction would stop at $20,000.00 at age 80 I decided to keep it so the family would at least get something for the money I had spent up to that point (of course I had to continue to pay premiums, which I did).

The premiums were over $200.00 quarterly ($247.00 in 2010) averaging around $1,000 a year. Since I called and was going to cancel 3 years ago they have collected another $3,000 from me. If they hadn’t guaranteed me that at age 80, as long as I continued to pay the premiums my family would get $20,000.00. I would have cancelled them right then and there. My Dad was almost 80 and mother is 90 so I hoping to reach 80. Last month GEBA sent me a letter stating that they were going to “TERMINATE COVERAGE” at age 80. So totally unfair to change a policy on someone who has paid all these years, if you want to make changes it should affect the new policyholders and they should be told up front what the policy is. I feel like I have been lied to and mislead and it has cost me thousands of dollars.

The reason I am doing this review is a young person approached me selling one of these policies from another company. He said it would be a great investment. That I would put money in and if I didn't use the life portion, I would virtually receive my initial investment back (no interest of course). I purchased a $100K whole life policy from them 38 years ago with a quarterly premium of $464. Last policy year, I received $900 in guaranteed cash value increase and, on top of that, a yearly dividend of $6,706, or a total increase of $7,606.

Having left dividends in the policy each year, my death benefit is now $259K. Granted, dividends are not guaranteed, but this company has paid a dividend each year since 1845 and they currently have the highest financial strength ratings of the major rating agencies awarded to any US company. They are one of only two companies to receive such ratings. I could have used those dividends to pay all premiums for the past 25 or so years, but with that kind of return, I plan to continue paying them as long as I can. Hope this helps!!!

The insurance was easy to get. The premiums for the insurance is reasonable. In all I am pleased with the process and with the policy I purchased. Contacted New York Life Insurance Company about life insurance. Filled out the application and was contacted within the next week. Talked to an agent on the phone and set up payments for monthly premium. Having shopped the last few month for life insurance finding a policy that I could afford and was qualified for was a very reassuring experience.

I have not purchased any insurance yet, but it is because of what my mother is going through that I don't know if I will. I know there is no exams and it is so easy to get a plan, and as long as you pay your monthly premium diligently you are covered. That's all great, but try to collect when you need to and deserve to. All these years I have heard my mother say "your father and I are covered so well, there will be no problems." It was good to see her at such peace about the decision she had made about their coverages. It has totally turned out different for her. You see my father has passed away in 9/2015. She still has not been able to collect. One lady says she is not the beneficiary on it. Mom sent a copy, doesn't matter they don't see it. Now they need the trust information.

They never had the trust when they opened this account. All this is causing more stress and wearing her down, and it is for something she paid for with her money. Never missed a payment! Your company won't pay out, it is because of honest people like my parents that have made you so big, it saddens me that she has to go through more pain, like her husband's death wasn't enough.

I believe in Term Insurance. I have held a Group Term Life insurance policy with New York Life (through the IEEE), for well over 40 years. The premiums have drifted up with my age, but life insurance is to protect the people who depend on you for financial support. Actually, I've reached the point where I've save enough that my spouse will be well taken care of. Therefore, I am torn between renewing the policy every year and letting it lapse, at a point in my life when it is far more likely to incur a payout.
