The Hartford approved my short term disability claim, paid a month then closed it saying the disability isn't supported. Then opened it as a long term when I called them out on it. Been waiting for a month now for them and I can't get a straight answer as I have bills stacking up.

My employer uses Hartford for all of their paid disability leave cases so I used them when I went on disability for my pregnancy and postpartum disability. The incompetence that I experienced from the customer service representatives was astounding. Time and time again they would make mistakes related to my leave that required me to repeatedly call back to try to correct. They fought me when I got an extension related to postpartum depression. Multiple times I had to get my employer’s HR/benefits department involved to help. They have been such a headache the entire time dealing with them.

Hartford (Heartless) cancelled my benefits after a 5 day surveillance and on 1 day I went to get a haircut and a store to get a pillow. I drive through a drive through for food and parked taking a rest. The investigator videoed thought I gotcha! I did nothing wrong. I went to get a haircut and went to a store and tried on a shirt over my head so I didn’t need to walk to the dressing room. My energy is low and my pain levels terrible. I’m in palliative care. Not curable. My benefits terminated and an investigator who asked all kinds of questions. I told him people who are disabled are allowed vacations. We have good and bad days. But never a day without pain. The fatigue and the pain alone messes with your mind. 9 years of hell and no end in sight and here comes Hartford claiming I can do “any job”. It doesn’t matter if it’s dishwashing. Good luck with that since I can barely do my own dishes. '

Chronic pain after surgery for the rest of my life, Chemo and 36 rounds of radiation and 9 surgeries and 2 radio frequency ablation and one event where I almost died. Every year Hartford asking for the same paperwork with back up of all the doctor visits and testing I had. No one cared. Hartford was only wanting to rid me as I was 63. And the older the more expensive I am to be on long term disability! After having my benefits terminated and looking for an attorney, I found the most amazing attorney that went after Hartford for back pay and producing even more evidence. No one at Hartford ever did a physical exam. They stalked me for 5 days and hoping to get footage of me doing jumping jacks! I wished. Everything is hard suffering with chronic pain that has no end and on lots of medication in hopes that today will bring better relief.

Hartford is Heartless! They don’t care. They went against my palliative care doctor who was clear I’m 100 percent disabled. Same with my primary doctor and oncologist. Yet Heartless didn’t care and profiled me as a malingerer and liar! I worked at my favorite place for 33 years and they waited an entire year in hopes of me returning. It broke my heart and messed up my mind. The pain too brutal for words. My attorney was Foster and Foster in South Carolina. Attorney Bax and his team so efficient and I’m certain Hartford thought they could sweep me as a “goner”. Foster and Foster Law was efficient and did everything right. Within less than 3 months I was informed that we won the appeal. Jerking me around for 9 years with a secret disability and then Hartford claiming I can do any job. I wished that was the case. I want my life back. But grateful I’m alive.

Some days are so bad I’m down 4-5 days in misery. Yes I can do any job. And Hartford cared more about saving dollars than believing my doctors who have treated me for 9 years as incurable. It’s too bad that these heartless people never lived a day in pain and make a decision on my life which is hard enough and unpredictable. I’m not a liar or a malingerer. Heartless tried to prove otherwise by stalking me 2 days in the beginning of the month and 3 days at the end of the month. Profiling an innocent chronic pain cancer survivor whose whole life changed by a surgery that was so invasive and careless surgeons.

Will not pay you for any type of depression. They do not believe in mental illness. The Hartford will ask for multiple forms but it's a waste of time. You might think you are going to be approved, but it's just a false sense of progress. Regardless of what you provide to them as evidence and medical information your claim will be denied.

I purchased short term and long term disability through this company with each job I have had over the past several years in case anything ever happened. I work hard and didn't plan for anything to happen, but you never know. Last year I began having seizures, and in March, my doctor decided I needed to be placed on a leave of absence until they could at least get the problem under control. I had the doctor send in the paperwork requested along with my employer.

Out of nowhere, they closed my claim without telling me why. I called the company and they stated that they hadn't received the paperwork from my doctor. I explained to them that not only had they faxed it over, but I had personally picked up the forms and sent them to them myself. At that time they admitted that they saw where they had received them, but the doctor did not give an exact date when I could return to a normal work schedule. I explained to them that the doctor couldn't tell them when I would be able to go back to work full time, because it depended on when they could find the right medication and dosage to control my seizures. Nobody could predict when that would happen.

The representative from The Harford then stated that they would reopen the claim if and when I could have the doctor send over updated paperwork and my medical records for the current month. I had the doctor send them over and called them a couple days later and they again denied receiving the paperwork. I called to have the doctor re-fax the paperwork and I am going to go pick up the documents myself and send them personally as well. If I have to call them daily or get a lawyer, then that is just what I will have to do. I can't control my seizures or help my current situation. I have no income at all at the moment, and they continue to do everything in their power to get out of paying my benefits. This company is nothing less than a scam and I wouldn't recommend anyone taking out disability insurance through them. They are deceitful, dishonest, and heartless. Their only concern is to fraud people and then not pay out when the time comes.

Oh we need this form, weeks later we need another form, weeks later we a different form to complete by your doctor. It’s after July fourth now and I still have not been paid. I wish I can sue them.

The remote staff's failure to return calls has left me frustrated, stressed, and anxious. The level of incompetence and disregard for customers is unbelievable. The Hartford's unethical behavior has pushed me to consider legal action due to the undue hardship caused. I caution others to be wary when dealing with this company.

Like others on this website, I wish I could give Hartford a zero star review. I had open heart surgery due to a non-work related accident. I received a phone call from Hartford as they are my employer’s long-term disability carrier. I had no idea that I even had long-term disability, So I was relieved when I received the call. The representative told me about the benefits and indicated that some paperwork was needed. They sent me a form to give to my cardiologist and it was returned a week later. Then they asked me for all the records of my doctor visits since the surgery I sent that in as well. My claim was to be reviewed or so I thought. Now I’m finding out that they have additional questions for my cardiologist that must be answered because according to the Hartford, I should be back to work by now.

Mind you, my job is a very physical and demanding one which requires me to stand for many hours at a time. I’ve complied with their requests for paperwork, but it seems, from my perspective, that they are attempting to drag this out until I’m able to go back to work. It’s been almost 2 months since I was entitled to my long-term disability benefit and yet it has not been approved. Apparently there is a review board that keeps asking for additional paperwork. Having a company tell me I should be back to work when my doctor says I’m not ready is insulting. I tried going up the chain of command at Hartford, but to no avail. I’m thinking about hiring an attorney as this is causing undue stress for someone with a heart condition on top of the financial burden it’s causing me. The company has a whole lacks empathy. I do not recommend doing business with this company.

When I first filed with The Hartford for STD through my employer it seemed seamless and easy. Little did I know that it would soon turn into a nightmare. I have been diagnosed with Cervical Radiculitis in my C7. They constantly hound the attending physician for paperwork on my progress. I was recommended by my ortho doctor to follow up with a pain management facility as the PT and he could no longer provide treatment. The Hartford requested the new doctor's office fill out the required paperwork and give me an extension.

My first consult with them was on 10/09/23 after I had an MRI with anesthesia. The doctor recommended an epidural steroid injection in my neck and told me that it may or may not work. My follow up was not until 11/07/23 with this doctor. My extension ran out on 10/29/23. The requested paperwork the Hartford sent several times to this doctor was submitted on 11/07/23 after my consult and evaluation. The Hartford is now reviewing my case again and my contact person there is no longer doing this job. I also had to pay $500 for required paperwork to my doctor's office with the pain management facility. I was told I would be reimbursed for this. It's been a month now. I have medical bills and now have a $500 charge on my charge card for the required paperwork. I am very frustrated with this company.

I was forced to submit a claim with The Hartford when I needed to go on a medical leave of absence from work. My experience so far was good in the very, very beginning, but now it has devolved into a pile of frustration.
Pros: easy to fill out form and upload documentation

    Cons: Literally everything else.

The automated phone system is genuinely the most annoying phone system I've ever had the displeasure of using, especially when trying to get the thing to understand you have an extension for the person you're trying to reach and you don't need to go through a whole inquisition to "make sure I get you to the right people". I'm pretty sure my cat understood me better than that thing.

My claims representative has changed 3 times and I've barely been working with them for 3 months. No communication regarding the changes, not even an automated courtesy email so I know who I need to be dealing with going forward. I only found out I had someone new when I logged into my dashboard and noticed a different name listed. I had to change my contact phone number which I both changed in the online dashboard AND called my (then) representative to let her know. I also had an important question for her regarding the length of my leave. No response whatsoever. No phone call. No email. Not even a letter sent via USPS. I know they can send emails no problem; they have no problem sending them out when they need more paperwork from you.

I logged onto my portal last week as I needed to upload documentation for an extension and my claim was inexplicably closed. Again, no phone call, no email, nothing in the mail to explain what was going on. Noticed yet another new representative was assigned to my claim. Called her a left a message asking what gives and to please either call me or email me. Still haven't heard from her. I saw a single missed call from 800-707-5333 which Google says may be The Hartford, but I don't know for sure since they didn't leave a voicemail.

I need my claim reopened and my extension approved (which shouldn't be an issue considering both my doctors agree I'm not well enough to go back to work). I'm going on a month now without having been paid because they can't get it together. It's a really crappy feeling to be going through something awful and trying to get it under control while also having to chase down people who can't do their job. Even worse when you're suffering withdrawals from your medication that you can't afford because not only have you not been paid in a month, you have less than $2 in your bank account and you still have to pay rent, your car payment, your utilities, and buy groceries.

For anyone else dealing with the same or similar with The Hartford, google "the Hartford complaints form" and it should bring you to an online form you can fill out. I just filled it out today so I don't know what will come from it, but I'm trying to get as many eyes as I can on this because I'm struggling. I don't know if there is another agency I can report them to besides maybe the BBB, but if I find one I'm absolutely going to report them.

I hated dealing with them after the change in case manager and their terminology change. I think they really need to be investigated as there are many like me with similar stories trying to survive and instead of Hartford aiding in our recovery to maybe get better and back to work, they flip our lives upside down and financially ruin us while midsts treatments and other apts and trying to just survive with the lovely letter stating they stopped benefits because they think I can go back to a multitasking busiest cell phone sales store as a manager and still bartend part-time after being rear-ended by a tow truck on the freeway at 79 mph loaded with a car so 18,000 lbs of weight my body absorbed that day, but no big deal right, that’s not a horrible accident or anything. I’m really disappointed in them as humans that have no compassion for helping people rather making life hell! It’s sad that I need a lawyer to get $677 reinstated and then 33% to the lawyer, yay me. Diagnosed w/ Cancer...Submitted claim for short-term disability through my employer w/ The Hartford. Not once have I spoke to agent handling my case. They use customer service agents (overseas that do not even speak English) as the middleman when you call in (Smart). So they pull up your case and read through the notes and basically advise you whatever you want to hear. It took months for them to approve my claim.

I just received a paper check (my first payment) since I filed April 11, 2023. Online it shows three payments have been issued. The one I received is dated as the 2nd one paid out. I called and the rep advised me that I did not enter the correct direct deposit number so the first payments has been reversed and the amount is close to $800.00. She went on to advise that is why they issued me a second payment dated May 19th. UGH NO. That is my check for that week's pay period. "Where and when will I be able to receive the first and third check you stated you issued." She says, "I do not know." Seriously I cannot make this up.

I asked to speak to my agent. She places me on hold but first advises me that I might have to leave a vm. I wait and she comes back on the line and says there is no voicemail avail due to my agent not being in the office rn??? Then offers to transfer me to my agent's supervisor. Transfers me and it goes to her vm but you cannot leave a vm. This is The Hartford.

So let's wrap things up. Diagnosed w/ Cancer, unable to work, file claim and get approved several months later and a payment (for me to live on while I fight for my life) is issued but nobody can tell me where or when I will receive it. THERE HAS BEEN ZERO COMMUNICATION TO ME REGARDING THIS AND ONLINE IT SHOWS THEY HAVE MADE THREE PAYMENTS TO ME. No notices, phone calls, alerts nothing in the portal. How do they get away with this?

    7. After all the proof of my disability and ongoing care they still only approve a couple weeks at a time!!! Then the entire paperwork gathering starts all over again.

Someone, seriously needs to think about filing a class action lawsuit against them. If there were a way for all of us to communicate, it would be great! I think they would change their tactics... and how they handle people with disabilities! God bless!

The Hartford has to be one of the most evil, unethical companies on the face of the planet. They take people’s premiums hand over fist, but when it comes to paying out long-term disability claims, they do everything they can to make sure they don’t have to pay. I’ve read a bunch of reviews on here and realized I should leave my own. If there is a class action suit against this company I would definitely climb on board.

In my case, even the short term disability was a hassle as they kept ‘losing’ paperwork and claiming that they needed more information. I did, however, get approved for short term disability on the initial try. But I didn’t get it until six months after I filed a claim (thank goodness I have a ton of savings). By that point in time I was already in the long-term disability window, and it was very clear by my symptoms, and supported by five different doctors, that there was no way I should be going back to work.

The annoyance that was the short term disability process soon turned into the nightmare of the Hartford‘s long-term disability process. They have it set up to make it as difficult on the claimant as possible, and we are people who are already dealing with serious conditions that make it hard for us just to get through our days. We don’t need/can’t handle the monstrous process The Hartford has set up, and that’s what these sub-human devils count on.

Some of their usual moves include: saying they don’t receive faxes or mailed documents so you have to keep bugging your busy doctors to resend things, putting artificial deadlines on records requests but only giving doctors a couple days to comply, parsing every word you say to see if there is somebody else from whom they can request records and continue to drag out the process, The minute they do you get records or forms filled out from your doctor, they turn around and ask for more, then do a quick-draw denial if there is any lag time with your doctors getting them records (and I ask, how many of you know doctors who have so much time on their hands that they can spend their whole day responding to insurance requests?), so that they can get around the rules of how quickly they have to legally make a judgment on your case.

If they reopen your case after their initial quick denial once your doctors do submit the records in, you know, an actually reasonable timeframe, they have all the time in the world to draw it out and they sincerely count on you giving up all hope or maybe even dying while they stall.

In my case, I was on the merry-go-round of constantly filling out more and more forms, having to wrangle six different doctors to make sure they were getting records in and forms filled out in a timely manner (which is a lot to manage when you are a sick person who can barely even get out of bed during your day… I don’t have to tell you that it certainly hasn’t helped in the recovery process), fighting with them about supposedly lost records, etc. for almost 9 months (and this was AFTER the initial 6 months) before they finally handed all of the paperwork from all of my doctors, all saying there’s no way I had any business working, over to their own hired doctor, who has never seen you, whom I’m sure they pay very well just to contradict people’s actual doctors.

Once it got to that point, the denial came very quickly. I was already prepared for it because it was abundantly clear at this point that this was not an ethical company and I knew what they were going to do. I had a lawyer lined up already and had the letter ready to go to start the appeal process, which included requesting the entire set of records they had amassed. The cherry on top of the horror-cake that was my experience with the Hartford was the fact that instead of sending the records on a disc, like the other disability insurance company I had to work with in the past, they had somebody print out every single page and mail a hardcopy. What arrived on my doorstep was the size of two big city phone books and weighed 15 lbs.

This was what I was to hand to my lawyers for them to parse through and build their case. At that point I just had to laugh. Bravo, the Hartford. You are officially the most terrible, evil company in existence. If I knew how to come after you legally, I would be doing it. Once I get better, which I do plan to do, and I plan to do it with all of the money you owe me in hand eventually (because I’m not giving up, **), I am going to make it my business to write letters to every politician, every Attorney General, every governor, every news outlet I can to try and get some traction on making your business practices illegal, or even coming after you for your practices that are actually currently illegal, but with which you are somehow getting away. You deserve to go down in flames. Shame on you for preying on people who are at their lowest and most vulnerable. If karma exists, anyone associated with The Hartford is going to really be in for it.

I have been dealing with Hartford going on 4 months now. I was admitted into a psychiatric facility due to a suicide attempt (they have ALL the paperwork from the drs, nurses, etc) back in November. I was released from the hospital 2 weeks later and Hartford then approved my pay for 9 days…which was completely fine, it wasn’t until I was released from the hospital that I would be told I needed to request an extension for additional time (my company pays me 100% disability up to 8 weeks) so I requested this time after being released, I was told I needed documentation from my psychiatrist which was actually returned to them, but they “never got it”. It was faxed 3 times.

Due to my dr telling me I NEEDED to take some time off and just focus on my mental (my mom passed back in June she was struck by a hit and run) I decided to take some time. Would I have known that I would not be getting paid for those 6 weeks after being released from a psychiatric facility I would have went against my drs wishes and went to work. I am a single mother with 3 small children I can’t afford to take any kind of break from work, I know I made a horrible mistake but mental illness is real.

I don't mean to make anyone feel bad for me but at this point I don't know what to do. I am beyond frustrated, EVERY SINGLE time I call Hartford I hang up crying. The customer service reps have no clue wtf they're doing. The “Analysts” are never available or a supervisor for that matter. I never get call backs, they always need something else, every time I call… again this has been going on since September 7, 2021. Wrote CEO, and still did not receive anything even close to adequate or acceptable service. I have been sick with Long Hauler COVID for over 3 months, and suffer debilitating symptoms. Working with them was literally a Nightmare inside my already COVID Nightmare. They handle only my company's Leave; thank God another company handles the Disability - which was approved much more efficiently than anything with The Hartford. While I was sick, at times unable to get out of bed for days in a row, I needed to continue to call and follow up because they were unresponsive and continued to lose paperwork, etc. (BTW - I wonder where my PHI paperwork went...? Maybe a good question for a Lawyer...)

My recommendation: keep track of every single interaction, who you spoke with, what time, what day, what transpired. I did for nearly every interaction, and plan to send all of the details to my Fortune 5 companys' CEO once I am in a much better place health wise. They need to know what their employees are going through. I am back at work now, still struggling, but managing. Lo and Behold, one of my employees just went out on leave, and texted me the difficulty she is having with The Hartford - needless to say I was not surprised, and definitely advised her to keep records of all interactions, too. If you are having to go through this company for a leave or disability, I am sorry for you. Try to be prepared and advocate for yourself.

I collapsed in a crosswalk mid- January 2020 and sustained injuries from the hard fall. I was admitted to the hospital via the ER and discharged over the weekend. The coming Monday, my PCP faxed a completed Physician Statement from The Hartford. Seven days after the form was received with supporting hospital records including abnormal EKG, regurgitation from a leaking valve in my heart, POTS, and a few other abnormal results, The Hartford assigns an Analyst who calls and explains that she’s processing the claim per the short-term policy.

In early February, approximately 2.5 weeks later, my employer tells me that The Hartford denied the claim and sent an email to them confirming this denial. When I called, on the recorded line, The Hartford told me it I had 2 claims under review: 1 short-term and 1 long-term. I asked why there’s two since it’s 1 incident and only 1 physician statement was faxed for 1 incident. No one at The Hartford returned my calls nor provided answers as to what was going on for days. In mid February, The Hartford conceded via email that it was a mistake made on their end while processing my doctors complete form and records.

The Team Leader overseeing the processing of my claim then calls to say that “stress and anxiety” are also symptoms on the January form that my doctor submitted along with fainting, and orthopedic injuries. The Hartford then sent mental health forms to be completed exactly 12 days (two more weeks after the initial processing delay) because they didn’t sent them in January or early February when they sent all of my doctors records requests and forms. The Hartford, however, complained that my therapist didn’t send records in early February per their request. When I asked for a copy of the fax they sent, and they sent it to me, I see that the complaint was dated 12 days before a record request fax was sent sent to my provider. Health providers aren’t clairvoyant and cannot send records 12 days ahead of a request to even do so. No one can.

The Hartford received the completed additional mental health form and then came back and said they required more information from my doctor and mental health therapist. Both providers completed the forms and returned them. While the forms were being completed, I had an MRI of my knee that revealed a partial tear of my MCL. By medical definition, this is a sprain of the knee. The Hartford disability website says sprain and strains are covered by their disability insurance. However, today 2/25/20, The Hartford did not approve the symptom. The MRI report and the treatment record from a top board-certified orthopedic surgeon was rejected today by The Hartford saying it’s not a valid injury. The policy says it covers sprains and a sprain it legally defined as a injury or tear of a ligament.

For the treatment of my heart condition, I underwent a CT angiogram and a tilt table test in early February. In addition to the irregular EKG, the tilt table revealed very abnormal blood pressures and pulse data and the angiogram revealed a large growth on my right ovary and 4 in my lungs (with no history, ever, of smoking—or second-hand). The cardiologist was concerned with the ovary growth and suggested that I have further testing to investigate it. The growth turns out to be quite suspicious via ultrasound imaging and my surgeons says since I’m post-menopausal, the chances of malignancy is much greater. I am to undergo surgery to remove the growth and Fallopian tubes.

I had an irregular abnormal ekg, abnormal growths in my CT, and a tear in my MCL, and The Hartford still has not approved the claim. My providers complete the additional info requests and provide results backing their recommendations and The Hartford keeps saying it’s not enough. It’s been 6 weeks without any income and I have no idea when The Hartford will stop their games. They continually demonstrate bad faith.

I was injured on the job in November 2019. I was sent to an urgent care for treatment on my lower back/hip. My initial visit I was treated by a Nurse Practitioner who told me my injury was due to a long term issue even though I'd never injured my lower back but was placed on light duty for 7 days. Four days later I go to work and begin experiencing severe pain. My HR manager sends me back to urgent care. The Dr. comes in, starts immediately apologizing stating the N.P. had misdiagnosed me but he didn't think it was vital enough to contact me and tell me. (At that moment I knew I was in trouble) He tells me I have Sacroiliac Dysfunction due to the fall. I receive a shot and sent back to work.

After 3 days pain is continuing to worsen. Work sends me back to the doctor and he just says it'll take time. I'm told it could be better in 2 days, 2 months, or even last years. I contact an injury lawyer to find out how to get another doctor. Contact my insurance adjuster who says give it time so I do. Every couple days I'd wake and couldn't even move enough to get outta bed to work. Would send me back (we're now at 2 weeks since injury) and finally doc says I can receive a very painful shot in my hip/back joint and it'll definitely cure it (why wasn't it offered earlier) so I agree.

One day of minor pain... pain comes back full force 2nd day. I return to the doc who says, "Well what do you want me to do...? I respond, "Is therapy an option?" He agrees to recommend therapy. After 5 days I attempt contact my adjuster... Evelyn... no response. 3 more days she calls and says I have a new adjuster since my claim had been escalated. She gives me contact info for a Zarisa. I call 8 times in 4 day period to no avail. The next day I get a call from physical therapist office saying I have approval for 3 days of therapy. Still no response from Zarisa. Finish 3rd day of therapy and they say, "You've got some major issue and we've not been able to get your back/hip adjusted. You need to see a specialist." This is now December 20th.

I go back to the doctor with the results and he responds, "There's nothing more I can do," and releases me! I begin frantically calling The Hartford and now Zarisa has a voice message she's out until after Christmas! So I go thru customer service and give a background on the situation and put in my request for a 2nd opinion (in my state it's a request for a panel of 4 which gives me only 4 options for 2nd opinion) and they give you a list of THE ONLY other approved doctors. I select a doctor, set up the appointment. Get there and they've no knowledge of my appointment. I'm absolutely livid! Try contacting Zarisa and don't get a response until December 30! She then tells me I have to give a formal request directly to her by mail or thru email... REALLY? I get her info while we're on the phone and send the email. I hang up thinking finally things are looking up.

The following day (New Years Eve) I receive an email with my options (WHICH ARE ALL URGENT CARE) and the statement she'll be out of the office again for days due to holidays! I rush to my job, select the doctor, fax the papers back. On January 3 I contact the doc office and they respond they received my info on the 31st! I ask when they can see me and was told since they're urgent care no appt necessary but no workers comp doc until Saturday January 4th. I go in. He sees me and instantly says, "You need an MRI. Your hip is over an inch lower on the injured side." Gives me ** and steroid pack and lowers my restrictions and says try going back to work. Hadn't worked since the 20th of December cuz pain was unbearable with no pay! I work 2 full days and the 3rd (also last day of steroid pack) I make it until 9am and pain is back. I go to HR manager and explain then go home.

January 8-10 I constantly call leaving messages for Zarisa and her manager at least 5 times a day each. On January 16, I get a call stating my MRI is ready for scheduling. January 21st is the date. Go for MRI and it shows major lower back issues. I call Zarisa to explain and get no response of course. Then on Monday January 27th she states they've received my results and there's issues need addressed. Finally... RIGHT? No! I email her what do I do about pay? She responds I'm limiting my own pay not going to work. No doctor has restricted me from working even though I didn't have a doc for weeks! She says follow up with the doc.

I go see him and he's puzzled why I'm back. I say I was told by the adjuster to come in... he says, "What for? I referred you to a back specialist because you need help that I can't give." I just stare at him confused as he is. He says, "You can't work in your condition." I say exactly and I'm not getting paid. I get an even more confused look from him. He says, "Wait, you aren't being paid?" I respond, "No. They said my doctor had to write me off." He proceeds to shake his head and write me off until the specialist agrees it's safe to go back. He forwards the info to the Hartford. She responds thru email that I'm now eligible for benefits. As of the 29th... here we are February 14th... still no appointment... still no check and I've exhausted all vacation personal time at work. I've taken out personal loans to pay my bills and I'm still in pain with no quality of life! I just want to get back to work and move on! THE HARTFORD is horrible and there should be some major repercussion for their business practices.

I have a torn tendon in my foot and was out of work for two months. The Hartford Group has yet to return any of my calls to the representative assigned to my case nor their supervisor or even their supervisor. I have faxed, emailed, and uploaded the documentation they requested and still haven’t received a penny from them. If it wasn’t for my wife putting money away for something like this happening we wouldn’t have been able to pay our bills or have a Christmas. It’s now nearing the end of January and we still continue to leave messages to no avail. It seems if they can’t deny your claim they just ignore you.

Thank you to the reviewers that included contact information to the consumer affairs and the Dept that oversees Insurance companies. I’m calling them today to see if I can get any help. Our savings is depleted and I don’t want to have to start using credit cards to get through this month. I wish companies would do a better job of protecting the employees by cancelling their policy with this company. If enough of our companies would cancel the insurance policy this company would be forced to take a look at what is going on. Because we all know that if you hit their bottom line they will take notice. But if companies continue to send the big premiums they have no incentive to investigate our claims of abuse of power. I will update this post with the numbers mentioned above if they are helpful.

The only issue I have is that when paperwork is faxed, they will tell you it takes 24 hours to update the claim online but for STD/office notes they don't update at all. They keep you in limbo on whether or not they got the paperwork because if you call, they will say they never received anything but then 5 days later the system will either say accepted or denied. They need to work on the updating process because it would make it much more easier to deal with rather than going back and forth with your doctor and them because they claim they have not received the paperwork.

Updated on 02/08/2020: Was given the runaround from very beginning. No problem with 6 months of short term but once the claim went into long term, it became a completely different company. The application took 13 days to go 200 in the mail? I don't think so. They held the application! This is unethical and illegal. Next they put this scumbag, Chris ** on the case. He lied about his position. This guy is some kind of manager they put on my claim to prevent it from going any further. He made several unethical remarks throughout the process. I was eventually denied after 3 months. He sent my records to an "independent doctor" hired to disagree with mine. They only do this when there's enough evidence to approve a claim, but they don't want to for monetary reasons. I'm sure this guy sleeps fine at night because he's a wicked piece of work. Karma is a **. Good luck Chris! Go chalk up another one.

Original Review: I began the process with an open mind, despite the horrible things I've read, only to have my suspicions confirmed. This company definitely behaves in bad faith, at least in the long term business. Over 2 months of stalls and flat out dishonest information. The decisions are likely mostly already made while in short term. The stalls are there to break the customer financially to prevent a successful appeal process. As a financial professional, I've never seen a company try so hard to "get off the hook". Employers are blind to it, as most claims don't exceed short term. In the meantime, this company continues to accept premiums with no intention of paying beyond short term unless the medical evidence is extremely overwhelming. This business needs some serious regulatory reform.

After a very serious auto accident where I was hit broadside by someone going 55 mph, I was left unable to work due to severe muscular/skeletal damage to my entire body. Broken back, damaged most organs, and many other broken bones and torn ligaments and tendons. I was left unable to use my hands for grasping items, and having 17 surgical procedures in 7 years along with numerous treatments to relieve pain in all areas of my body. I was a awarded social security disability.

After many years of constant requests to prove my continued disability, being repeatedly threatened with cancellation due to doctor's failure to provide documentation and and being deemed disabled by social security, Hartford cancelled my long term disability. There was never any documentation provided by them as to how they came to that decision.

I quit seeking medical help for pain management after having all those surgical procedures, requiring several more surgeries as recommended by Doctors, and losing my ability to use my hands significantly, losing my ability to walk safely (10 falls in 18 months, two resulting in severe head injuries) and failure to respond to any pain management solutions (I have tried 7 N.S.A.I.D. and have severe reactions to them, I was on opiates for 8 years but quit due to side effects and increased tolerance, and little actual pain control, have tried numerous other pain management meds such as **, **, **, and several others, over 50 various cortisone injections, spinal injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency, and many many years of physical therapy) with little to no relief.

I am still deemed disabled by social security, but no longer disabled by a private insurance company. They constantly harassed me, required redocumentation every year, and forced me to sign up for social security, which I got due to being disabled, and then Hartford cut all payments to me once I started receiving social security, claiming that my son's social security benefits which he received since I was a single disabled parent, put my income over the amount required for them to issue any form of payment to me. Then they took the entire backpay award amount from social security and said I owed them every penny of it for them paying my benefits for that time period. Since being discontinued, I have become homeless, tried to work part time to get a place to live but had to quit work due to inability to perform duties required to work. And I was only trying to work 10 hours a week. Privatized insurance does what they want.

The heart condition I had has no symptoms or treatment other than the surgery I had when I was insured, but my claim and appeal were denied anyway.

Now they won't pay a Short Term Disability claim l filed for arthritis in my hands. This is a new medical condition that started in late October, after I had been insured by The Hartford for almost. No one will even review the claim. Make no mistake. You absolutely have to work hard and jump through hoops while being disabled with this worthless company. I had to apply for public assistance today for the first time in my life! I held a very senior position with a well known silicon valley employer making 6 figures until disabled. I paid into this Insurance for 12 plus years and now I'm on good stamps. I would strongly recommend anyone who has to deal with this company have cash reserves for an attorney and pay some bills if you can! They will find any excuse to cut you off! I am currently filing complaints as far and wide as possible. You simply cannot rely on keeping long term benefits. Lastly, because I made 6 figures and the had to pay 66% of my income, I am a cash drainer to them so after being harassed after 3 years by the same analyst, they finally found their excuse. I almost lost my job because they were not receiving the Dr's fax reports. Even though they were getting confirmation reports stating it was sent, the hartford was saying they did not receive it. I have been on STD since Jan 10th 2019 and have been a prisoner in my own home due to my condition. I only have 4 to 6 inches of my colon left and have been very ill.

After filing for LTD and having tons of paperwork every other month stressing about my past experience they have denied my claim due to insufficient paperwork and lack thereof. Mind you I have called my physicians more than once to make sure they have sent everything that was requested including medical records. I am still not able to work due to urgency accidents and excessive abdominal pain and gastritis. My analysis reassured me they they would contact my physicians for the paperwork and that mental just facing the same information, not at all speaking with anyone even though my physician requested to speak with them. I am totally humiliated and feel discriminated against because of my disease, I am truly not able to go back as of yet. I'm still recovering from this disease and it has been a battle everyday.

They lack empathy and lie about the things they are willing to take care of. Then they have the right to say it's my responsibility after I've done everything in my power to make sure they received what they requested. It's not enough, they are wanting blood from a turnip which us totally impossible. Especially when both physicians have confirmation forms from faxes and medical records that have been all due to my Crohn's. I couldn't even get out of her when I asked...what do I do next, I wish I had my health so I didn't have to go through this. I've never felt so alone and helpless since my surgery and The Hartford at work as totally made me feel so much emotional distress from this in which has delayed my recovery.

I've learned since I've had complications with my health that if you don't have your health then you don't have nothing at all. How true this is, single mom at 44 with so much health debit and don't have my own home. I'm on Social security disability and wish I could just get my health back so I don't ever have to go through this again...I am sobbing...they make you feel like a p.o.s. The Hartford not only takes forever to correspond with, they constantly "lose" things, or say they never received them. They don't like to return calls and they make the process very hard. Instead of finding the relief people need in their time of need, The Hartford piles on the stress, frustration, despair, hopelessness etc.

They found it prudent to deny my claims for short and long term disability, and my appeal for short term. I am now going to lose my job due to them arbitrarily denying my claims by using a doctor they pay who has never treated me or anything, despite my doctors information and my medical records. I have no choice but to hire a lawyer, I haven't had any income in 4.5 months and that will continue. December was my year mark. I submitted all data from my doctors (4), all scans, I created a spreadsheet for my doctor appointment dates for the year as well as my medication list. Seems it takes 3 weeks to a month to get paid. I guess they feel everyone has tons of money laying around to cover monthly/weekly expenses. Not including medical. I appreciate their added stress to my life.

I submitted my paperwork in December for long term Disability. It is now April and after submitting a thousand medical records, calling every other day and my claims manager not returning calls, no one had straightforward answers and me complaining about my claim manager. My claim is denied because of stupid pre-existing conditions not to mention I’m a dialysis patient. This company is shady and their practices, along with Amazon should be investigated.

I went on Medical leave December 23rd secondary to some medical issues. Attempted to call her as some issues arose with my insurance and coverage to get to the MD. She closed my file because she could not take the time out of her schedule to listen to why she did not get documentation. Finally I went to a specialist who diagnosed my illness. She lied that she did not get paper work that I sent on Tuesday and claimed it was Friday and lied in her documentation despite me having a fax confirmation.

The disability insurance cancels and can not be renewed if you are not working full time. So unless you're still working, have a bankroll to cover COBRA as my premium is $840 a month for health care, and have a doctor in your pocket. I threw away a lot of money for nothing. Would of made more banking it vs giving it to these vultures. March 28, 2018 still awaiting a decision. Dawn KARMA is a **.

They jerked me around, saying they never got things, saying they needed my notes after having given them everything they asked for, etc. This company added so much stress to my acutely mentally ill client that they are probably complicit in her delayed recovery. And she hasn't received one dime from them because they suddenly "need more information", pushing her to more financial desperation. Shame on this company. They should be investigated by an ethics board.

I call and got my noticed faxed to them the same day for my dates to change. Spoke to one representative and was advised that an analysis would give me a call to change the dates with 24 hours.

Well! Went out on short term disability April 26, 2018. Took weeks for approval then my pay stopped every 3 or 4 weeks before restarting again 3-4 weeks later, leaving me without any pay at all for month at a time. When pay was sent it would only last 3-4 weeks before stopping again to get more of the same dang paperwork & info that always required being faxed 3 or 4 times before Hartford would admit to receiving it, even though Dr's office had confirmed receipts showing the faxes were sent successfully.

I'm single & no one to turn to for financial help... Hence, the whole purpose for having "protection" of my income if I ever did become to sick or hurt to work. The representative assigned to my case at Hartford was nice enough, and seemed caring. I honestly believe it was her that I owe thanks to for being paid at all, as most of decisions at Hartford are made by people who have never seen or spoken to people they pass their judgment & opinions on about their medical conditions. I was forced to miss appointments with specialists who required $150-400.00 cash upfront before I could be seen by them & had to wait 2-3 months for the privilege of even having an appointment, of course the appointment times ALWAYS ended up falling in the 3rd or 4th week that Hartford had left me without any income.

I was struggling badly, but Im to the point of wanting to just go to sleep & not wake up anymore, since my std ended in mid October, and the BS game playing, procrastination and deliberate knit picking trying to find every excuse possible to delay the process, I've had no income at all since a $250 check from Hartford mid October, it's December 31st and Im bringing in the new year with almost nothing to eat,no natural gas for heat, knowing my power will be shut off first thing in morning Jan 2nd, only have power today because of a holiday, Ive had no medicine for my pain or severe depression for over a month, cant see the dr bc Ive no way to pay them, will be 4 months behind in rent as of tomorrow and about to be in the streets, all while barely able to get up and bathe, cook or do much for myself, can barely make it out of the house to medical appointments to the two offices that still agree to see me without money, but can do nothing to help me get my meds. I'm almost out of my thyroid meds.

Long story short, I made huge mistake in "Trusting The Hartford" to protect me financially in disabling illness, because Hartford has been provided with everything I can possibly give them but somebody I have never spoken to or seen in my life, nor have they laid eyes on me to see the state I'm in, decided today to deny my claim based on lacking medical info, but they have my records from 5 doctors, who all seem to agree on my inability to work.

I expressed my hopelessness and desire to give up & die to the online chat Rep at Hartford, about 2 hours later, a local sheriff's deputy in my state & county was knocking at my door because Hartford sent them to see if I had killed myself. The whole lot of them should be put in prison, they're conniving & crooked thieves, selling false hope & protection they do everything they can to get out of delivering when it's legitimately needed.

How in the hell is it reasonable to expect someone to wait even one month, much less several without an income? How is it income protection when it's a process that leaves a person homeless, hungry & hopeless, and even sicker than they started out, as they hang on for months not knowing what in the hell is to become of them, especially when some jerk decides to deny a very sick person basically just because, since there really isn't a legit or valid reason, then they run out to celebrate New Year's Eve? Why is it people have to suffer like this and lose everything, have to end up in court and it take months & months to get what the hell Hartford sold to them and promised to protect them if they ever got too sick or hurt to work? How is this legal? What is wrong with this picture? It's fraud!

Diagnosed with 3 autoimmune disorders, 2 spontaneous fractures, over a year of IV therapies, multiple surgeries, limited use of hands, was in multiple hard casts for foot/ankle almost a year, see approx 10 regular Drs. On long term disability, constant threats, impossible requests for forms to be filled out which require at least $40 each or separate office visit just to have Dr fill out (that they won't pay for), focuses only on the one dr that won't fill them out, refuses any additional records from any other Dr I have.

So I have to obtain my own records and only has a fax # to send documents to so I have to pay to fax records, then when I do, rep more than once has stated 1 page comes through black (of course it's always the one page he needs), then forces me to resend everything since I don't know which page didn't come through, then uses that as excuse to cancel me every Dec (not sure why right before Xmas and maybe end of year helps their bonus?) and holds pay with no warning, calls and sends the cancellation letters after he has held my pay.

I was forced by Hartford to sign up for social security to collect my long term disability, was approved by SS on first application and informed Hartford so they could hold that amt from my LTD pay. Then, that wasn't good enough because Hartford has "different criteria than social security" and then they state the policy terms are changing so they will determine if you can do any job not your original field and the work doesn't have to be available to you, and they determine that with no medical background. No matter what you do, no matter how sick you are, the harassment never ends.

Have only had LTD benefits for 14 months and have had to file 3 complaints with state insurance dept. in order to get copy of my policy and get my pay released. My advice is find out what state your group policy is issued (if issued by your employer) and continue to FILE COMPLAINTS WITH THAT STATE AND YOUR STATE INSURANCE DEPTS if applicable. Make sure and attach all documents with your complaint. They are the only ones who can help. If they get enough complaints on how horrible they treat sick people, threatening and holding paychecks, embarrassments, maybe they will get in trouble. This company should be ashamed of themselves. Considering they only deal with the very sick for LTD benefits, they are true evil snakes.

And It has been 13 years of me being disabled and they still require extensive medical records and reports from the multitudes of Drs and specialist I see every year. I have gotten worse and worse physically and the paperwork is redundant and irritating for me so I can only imagine how inconvenient it is for the medical staff to gather and send off. (I see about 15 providers yearly.)

When my care providers do not submit their portions of the paperwork that Hartford requires I get threatened with having my insurance claim cut off. I provide my portions every year in a timely manner. I do not control the Drs and nurses responsible for submitting the forms from the Dr. The staff has never once been kind or understanding. They are often curt and hard nosed. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the issues I have had dealing with the staff. You can imagine my surprise when I received a phone call from the clinician reviewing my request on 12/3 asking for even more information, including a request to sign a release at my psychiatrist's office so she can have my records from him, too.

On 12/7, she contacted my therapist again and asked MORE questions and I still have no decision. I live paycheck to paycheck. I haven't received any income since 11/18. My mom had to pay my rent. My meds run out in 4 days and I have no money to refill them. I have $40 to my name and haven't paid my utility bills, bought groceries, paid my car (or put gas in it), to say nothing of my credit cards. Why is this woman treating my request as though it's coming out of her pocket?!? My knee locked completely and almost sent me down a flight of stairs, I went for a follow up this past August and the x-ray revealed I essentially have 'scraps' of cartilage floating around and I know have 3 bone spurs and am 2mm away from being complete bone on bone. I am 28, healthy, good shape, and my knee has become increasingly worsening. Due to the lack of cartilage my x-rays are black other than where the spurs are, they have attempted injections and then requested an MRI be completed as the locking can cause MCL or ACL damage.

My MRI was requested on 9/27/2018. Constant follow up, consistently told it was pending, and then based on my physician needing the MRI to see what options are left I cancelled a follow up. My 'case manager' no longer existed, extension was gone and I was transferred to a 'case supervisor,' whom indicated that I apparently am showing a new injury. She stated denial info from my auth was sent to my physician and myself on 10/10/2018 ; neither the office or myself were notified, the woman was extremely rude and stated my physician 'needed to do their job' and disconnected our call. I don't understand how this company can legally do some of the things or practices they have done with me and I would highly recommend that you review your long-term disability and short-term disability products that are offered by your employer before you agree to use these people as your long-term or short-term disability. The final thing I would have to say about the Hartford is just keep in mind that they will take every drop of money that you get from a claim. They will put a lien against any litigation that you have and they will also take all back pay and attempt to pay the least amount possible under whatever laws that they're protecting themselves with.

I just received two letters from the Hartford stating they need me to retrieve more records and send them in for analysis. My case is still pending. INCOMPETENT. INCOMPETENT. They have denied me based on their "qualified" reviewers. They stated that he said I do not have a severe enough disability and can go back to work. He is denying everything. In fact, he just signed off on a disability placard with the DMV under the "severe disability" section. They will do whatever they can to not pay you. As everyone has stated below, they don't return phone calls, they can not answer your questions about reviews and their rationalization, you are constantly switched to different analyst, you have to explain your case and issues over and over again and They have no concern that you have bills to pay. They string you along for weeks.

To the Gentleman below... PLEASE PLEASE contact me. I am willing to do a lawsuit against this company. Here is my phone number... Yes I'm listing this number because this company is a joke and truly interfering with people's lives. ** By the way, I would give this company a 0 if possible. The Hartford will drag claims out for weeks, submit request after request until they receive something that can count as 'deniable', to avoid paying. If they are pushed they will pay a small portion of the claim only in hopes the person in need goes away. If you plan to use this company, have a good lawyer on standby!

This company is the worst! I am glad that I found this forum, it’s true, they never return phone calls. I never asked for taxes to be taken out of my weekly payment but they were taking them out anyways (I needed the full amount to survive while I was out for the 6 weeks). When I inquired as to why my payment was lower than my previous claim from a year ago, they said that I requested taxes being taken out. I never requested that state and federal taxes be taken out when I initiated my claim but somewhere, someone decided that they should.

When I did reach my “handler” she acted like she could care less. I requested that my initial phone call be found and listened to because you know our phone calls are supposedly recorded for training purposes. I also asked for my handlers supervisor to call me. That was last week. I left messages with both the handler and the supervisor and still no return calls. Because I wanted them stop taking taxes out of my check they have stopped paying me and have not returned my calls. I, like all of you, am totally on board with any class action lawsuit, the Hartford stinks.

Heart function was so low (only 23%) as to deem surgery bypass surgery life threatening. Pacemaker/defibrillator implanted 9/15/2017. Further invasive procedure on 10/4/2017 determined that heart bypass would not improve diagnosis. Hartford approved initial claim to 10/21/2017.

On 10/13/2017 cardiologist completed their requested form for an out of work extension to 12/18/2017. Hartford has played a game of needing additional direct conversation with cardiologist to confirm her reasoning for out of work extension for a period of 3 months after implant, and 2 plus months after last surgical procedure. At this time pacemaker testing and prescription optimization are still assessing maximum heart stability. Yet Hartford has become the professional in the room and decided that the extra 2 months recovery is not necessary. The results of their opinion is testimony to insurance companies taking on the role of "health" professionals. Their results could be deadly and for that they should be held accountable.

I submitted a short term disability claim with the Hartford whom my employer has a group policy with for its employees. I have a seizure disorder and had a seizure resulting in a trip in an ambulance to a local hospital. Apparently The Hartford has no medical staff review of the claims. Why? I have been out of work for over 6 weeks, yet The Hartford informed me that there is nothing in my claim substantiating my claim. Anyone who suffers from seizures (grand mal) knows that you don't wake up the next morning as if nothing happened, and you are in perfect health.

My claim has been denied and due to the time off of work I no longer receive payroll and therefore my medical benefits (as well as other regular payroll deductions - including medical insurance) have to be paid out of pocket. With no "supportive assistance" I am unable to "Relax and Stay Positive" as The Hartford's marketing documents say. I have requested my employer to withdraw future contributions coming out of my payroll to this BS company. They willingly take your money, but don't dare ask for proactive, helpful consideration. I have had to dip into my retirement savings to get me through this very difficult period for my household. Thank God for Fidelity companies... Shame on The Hartford!

For the record I agree with other reviews on this site saying that it is next to impossible to reach The Hartford's staff 'working' on my claim. Also, I doubt that they make an active effort to follow-up on any information provided to them by physicians. For example, I have been told that they make requests to physicians for their documentation relating to the claim. My physician informed me that no such request has been received in his office since I filed the claim 5 weeks ago. I proactively had the physician's office fax the info into The Hartford without their express request, yet even with this information, The Hartford has made it apparent that they have not read the material, yet they tell me that the claim is unsubstantiated.

If you are an employer seeking a disability insurance policy for your group of employees, I would look elsewhere if you are interested in truly seeking a company that is compassionate, professional and displays some medical expertise in the review of submitted claims. Sick employees are only made sicker dealing with The Hartford due to the unnecessary emotional and financial stress this company creates for claimants. Truly a shame!

In a previous review of The Hartford from a truck driver who was denied to return to work by a DOT law yet the Hartford denied his DB claim, this is actually your employer and the Hartford working together. My 33 yr old husband had a stroke. He's doing mostly fine. Physically he's perfect, cognitively, not so well. First, no matter what, he's always driven big truck like a champ. He was told he had no lacking physical issues to keep him from work but the recommended time to hang out after a stroke without a seizure, is one year. There is a clause included in fine print for transportation divisions of companies that a DOT Dr's denial to return to work doesn't necessarily mean you can't do another job within the company. So if you can do another job, you are disqualified. The year recommendation everyone follows isn't even a law, only a recommendation. A good one but damn.

So we are going on two months from his initial short term ending and bring paid to today. I could never, ever get our rep on the phone. She would purposely call every night around the same time but we were never sure which phone she was calling, if she was calling, and it was always around dinner bath need time for young children. Her voicemail said she'd call back before ten am on her phone recording, she never called that early. She never answered her phone, we didn't have an email address or another way to get a hold of anyone, and when she'd leave a message, she knew what we needed or wanted to know and she would every time likely say who she was and that she called... Lots of nonsense.

Finally I called her right back, she of course didn't answer and we were due our next payment soon, the one that never came and we are still waiting for. I told her she was granted permission to leave any information needed on our recordings. Please stop calling at that time and call back within a decent time. I was pissed. I couldn't get a hold of his HR people. Finally I did and poor lady didn't have a clue. She called the day before our Dr's appt. I told her I was nervous and she asked why, all I had to do is make sure he goes to the appt and they'll fax everything in and they did. Then we waited and waited.

I scoured the site one evening and see where someone could just call in and ask a question so I did and someone answered. He listened, I cried and cried, we've worked so hard and we were about to lose everything. He was for the Hartford but he was wonderful. He kept telling me I should be able to see our workers team leaders within the claim, with their extensions. I told him I had no idea of who that was... He got me numbers, he got me answers, he was awesome.

The following day I called a team leader and was denied. He can do other jobs, well the closest warehouse and not just a drop yard of trucks is 6 hours away. Doing another job is out of the way. The team leader then informed me he wasn't actually her team leader anymore. The Hartford doesn't keep the same people on the same claims for long so they don't build a rapport... It's easier to see the person as a number if they are revolving, I was told how to appeal... And to do it quickly... I looked at the dr's report and noticed, he has a neurologist appt set, is diagnosed with cognitive issues, it's on record every time I called or talked with anyone asking if I needed him to release me to talk on his behalf and why, and they denied us.

I will tell you he is so different cognitively, it's like having a mildly handicapped teenager. I'll say that because he is able to function, knows right from wrong, but he opposes and fights every little thing. He can't follow more than two simple steps without messing up. He will mess up complicated steps, he is defiant and acts like a teen. He decided to try to apply somewhere else and he asked me if we lived in North or South America... He was serious. We haven't had the neurologist appt yet, we shouldn't have been denied. All the information isn't in. This is the Hartford.

Oh... And we are losing everything. We are having to split up because there isn't enough room or patience to deal with a handicapped teenager (my husband isn't a teenager and was intellectually bright) and two small children. And we aren't talking down the road, he is having to move home to the north, 22 hours away. We've lost one vehicle. I've always been awesome with bills but it gets to a few months of promises and suddenly they forget the years you paid on time. My everything is broken up for greedy **. And I don't think anyone else will care about his condition like I will. Sure they'll get their money for helping him but he will be like this forever and I don't have an education or skills to barely support us.

I haven't slept in the months, I'm not eating, I'm driving it off options. Whoever reads this call your lawyer from the beginning, err to the side of caution so you don't lose everything you've worked for, hurting your children for life. They are already in a bad way from watching him go through the stroke, now they are losing him. My daughter had straight As for two plus years. The semester he had his stroke, she got her first C. This isn't a company who cares.

While checking to see if The Hartford has a history of doing the same thing as to me, I noted it was pervasive, not just occasionally that Claims Department rescinded or changed doctor/patient plans of Return to Work/retroactively closing a claim and demanding repayment; saying "Our decision based on Dr reports" and others items that have nothing to do with me. i.e. "keeping my license current" and much more. I called the Dr's office to see if he/they made the statements claimed by The Hartford reps and the written and verbal record refutes The Hartford written/verbal statements. After reviewing Consumer Affairs reviews - I believe The Hartford-Disability Claims Department is/has been dishonest with policyholders in their climate of culture where many claims are closed retroactively after a patient/doctor/ability agree on a Return to Work date, such as happened with me last month.

The harm and cost is substantial to the already health/ability of claimant and the damage and/or sabotage, to the client (as in my case), will possibly thwart all attempts at re-employment by forcing an attempt to work prior to recovery (per the Dr). The Hartford thus causing failed employment and inability to be employable in the future. This culture problem cost everyone!!! When a company is too big to be held accountable to the public it will cost everyone.

No matter how much doctor's notes nor how clear they are it is never enough. My Return to Work Certificate from my company's Workplace Clinic/doctor, who is a DOT Certified Medical Examiner that I CANNOT return to my driving position temporarily.

This is a legal issue and 100% legitimate and still they ask for more information. There is NO doubt that I cannot return so why don't they pay what is owed to me while gathering whatever else their policies require? The answer is simple; they have attorneys on retainer and most people get worn down trying so it is financially lucrative to delay & deny. I invite you, your company, the government or anyone this is of interest to research this company's practices as I have been on the back burner for an extension for over 10 weeks.

After suffering months of exposure to high levels of mold that I am deathly allergic to, I suffered an extreme reaction which resulted in asthma and vocal cord damage. Hartford was the insurance carrier for the company and denied treatment for over 4 months. During that time, I had to seek (and pay for) treatment on my own. After hiring an attorney they paid for a very limited number of treatments and medications and then began denying them. They even denied them when their own physician prescribed them.

It has been close to THREE years and I am still fighting to get the treatments and medications I need from them. I get excuse after excuse including that they haven't gotten the medical records from one of the physicians I was treated by (a specialist in asthma). However, I know they were sent to them on multiple times and they were even sent to Hartford's own physician. Every pharmacy, physician or treatment provider who has tried to work with Hartford has said this is absolutely the worst experience working with a Workman's Compensation claim they have ever had.

Medical bills have piled up and I have numerous ones in collections as a result of Hartford's denial of claims. My symptoms have gotten progressively worse because the treatment has been delayed and as a result, I may have to have surgery on my vocal cords. Reading the complaints about Hartford, it seems that there are a multitude of similar stories. It leads me to believe that Hartford categorically denies prescribed medications and treatments as a way to increase their own revenues at the expense of those who have been injured at work. I think there may be grounds for a class action lawsuit if someone looked close enough.

First of all, my claim was never originally processed. I was told this was due to being "short staffed," which unfortunately is not my problem. When I am short staffed at work, which is often, there are no excuses for not doing my job. In the 12 weeks of my disability, I was able to personally speak to my "claims handler" 1 time. Due to the fact that my claim was not originally processed, I had to call repeatedly and leave numerous messages that were never returned. The most frustrating part is that no one could help me except for my claims handler who never returned any of my 20 voicemails, therefore putting me in the nonsense circle.

The one and only time I had the pleasure of speaking to my claims handler, she was condescending, unprofessional and hung up on me for no reason other than I said it was unacceptable for her to not return my calls and that being short staffed is no excuse. I did leave her boss a few voicemails that were shockingly not returned either, until I threatened legal action to his superior. I did receive a call after that incident. Bottom line, I had a very stressful recovery because of all of the hoopla I was put though and I would never recommend this company to anyone.

I tried to contact The Hartford at work today twice because they lost my login and claim I have never been in the system plus I do not exist when in fact I just returned to work from a 3 month FMLA which they did not make me active at work. Long story short on the first call I waited 48 minutes with no reply and on the second call 66 minutes with no reply when at the beginning of both call the automatic service claimed I had a wait time of less than 4 minutes. This is totally unacceptable. If they are short handed because it is the day after Thanksgiving then they should direct you to a voicemail option.

I am sick, and I did not have the time or energy to be treated like a nobody. I will never do business with them again and when I go out for my upcoming medical procedures I will use another company because I have a choice. I highly recommend people do their research before getting involved with a company that would treat a sick individual or any individual in this disrespectful, rude, unkind and down right ugly way... I am done with the hartford. They do not even deserve a capital letter on their company name.

The worst part about this is while you are waiting and steaming for minutes on end you have to listen to a voice tell you how important your call is to them and they will be with you in the order your call was received. Plain and simple. They had too many people out today and therefore not enough people to answer the influx of call for the day which was probably a normal one. They should have just closed and reopened next Monday. I will file an official complaint when I can find a link to do so, that I am finding difficult to do as well. I will not call though that is for sure. If they did their job, which is the only job they have to do by placing me active I would not have to do this to begin with. Anyway I am done, done, done.

Due to chronic D.D.D. and debilitating juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (since age 5) I recently had to file a claim with The Hartford long-term disability insurance. I cannot praise their professional, courteous and expeditious handling of my claim enough! The first phone call I received after filing my claim was from my personal rep., Joseph **. He left me feeling valued and appreciated!! And, EVERY phone call from him, or someone else from The Hartford, was the same way – it left me feeling valued and appreciated!

This was SO UNLIKE other phone calls I'd received from another insurance company when filing for a short-term disability. The rep. was disrespectful and rude! Almost everything I told her about my pain, or my mobile limitations, etc., she questioned or doubted. Without fail her phone calls ended with me feeling defeated, unbelieved, hopeless, and persecuted. So, when an insurance company comes along which has treated me with the utmost respect and dignity I MUST speak out! The Hartford has done that from day 1. I can't thank them enough, or say enough to give them the credit they deserve for their professional and expeditious handling of my long-term disability claim!! Thank you, thank you, thank you The Hartford!!

On 5/26/2016 I became physically unable to work. I am continuing to have severe upper right abdominal pain that causes me to lose my breath, makes me nauseous, dizzy headed, unable to focus, in extreme pain on my right side like I have a broken rib (but it's not). After test, blood work, and many doctors, even trigger point injections did not help... the doctors said I have a condition call "Costochodris" which is an infection of the cartilage in my rib cage. I work from home, at my computer for a call center which seeming is easy enough, however with this condition it's horrible and just breathing is extremely painful and nonstop talking is impossible let alone sitting upright for eight hours. I tried different chairs, positions, even a love seat before I went on FMLA leave to try and find a doctor to help me.

Of course I also had Hartford to fall back on so I thought, so I would not go bankrupt since I am the main income since my husband is disabled due to a stroke four years earlier. At first Hartford approved my claim, they pay me a few weeks then stop. I go approximately two months without payment. Finally after repeated attempts, phone calls, sending in multiple medical records, calling Hartford numerous times talking to supervisor, nurses, anyone who would actually act like they would help... spending countless hours doing the agent's job finding out doctors fax numbers, record department numbers, etc I got my claim started again where Hartford paid me back pay and approved me for two weeks after that. Then STOPPED payments AGAIN!

Each time they stopped payment I would call and ask why only to be told some vague answer like "You no longer meet disability requirements" and I would say "I am still under doctors care, he still will not let me go back to work of which I have sent in paperwork showing, and my condition has not changed from the last time you approved me." "How do I NOT qualify now for the same condition and reason as before?" And the agent would say a supervisor would call me back and I would never hear from anyone.

I ended up calling an attorney to ask for help, he told me to appeal, on Hartford's website there is no way to appeal so I called and spoke to my claimed agent and she told me today I would have to wait for my denial letter to come in the mail (I have never received any info from Hartford in the US mail and told the agent this info) and she explain the instructions on how to file an appeal would be in the letter and she could not give me the information over the phone. I also wrote to Hartford's legal team today, of which I have written a couple of times over this process, asking for help letting them know of my request for the appeal info and if they could and/or would send it to me but it normally takes a week or so to hear back from that department.

So I wanted to add my experience here in hopes something can be done to simplify or regulate these companies so people whom are sick and think they have insurance to fall back on really do... not just another scam. Because if the company is not held to certain guidelines they will continue to take money from people and scam on claims. Most people give up on real claims because the process is too hard because the insurance is allowed to make it hard. We need justice!!!

I've recently encountered the worst business experience with The Hartford insurance company! I recently underwent knee surgery, and have been under continuous doctors care for this injury and surgery warranted. Disability forms were frequently completed by my orthopedic surgeon, as per their request and followed all company guidelines to be continued benefits via the Hartford. Regretfully, I was informed after receiving STD benefits for my injury/surgery for 60 days that the Hartford had to discontinue my benefits, while they perform an investigation to confirm if my injuries were pre-existing! In addition, I was told that this was a company policy for "all individuals" that were receiving STD benefits! I didn't have a problem with the investigation, because I knew that I sought treatment for my knee after my insurance went into effect! Regretfully, they had already closed my case, prior to the completion of the pre-existing investigation deadline!

Additionally, within 2-3 weeks of undergoing knee surgery, I was called via The Hartford nurse, and told that she was calling to see how she could get me back to work as soon as possible! I informed her that I could barely walk, and was still walking with crutches, plus my employer didn't want me to return unless I could perform at 100%!! Considering, 99% of my work consisted of walking and standing! Meanwhile, I had called The Hartford and spoke with another representative to inquire if I would be entitled to retroactive pay, once they finished my investigation and saw that my condition wasn't a pre-existing!! I knew that it wasn't pre-existing, therefore, expected to get reinstated and reimbursed soon! Unfortunately, I was informed this week via the representative that I was no longer eligible to received disability benefits via The Hartford!

I still do not understand how they could abruptly tell someone who was actually ill, and met all guidelines and policies for this insurance that they're no longer eligible!! This organization is definitely NOT to be trusted, or used for disability, and/or any other insurance options! I feel almost certain that these insurance claim representatives are given big bonuses for denying claims that will save companies millions of dollars!! That's why they're fast-talking, sly, heartless, and non-empathetic people!! It appears that they're more concerned about their survival income, and not yours!! However, I plan to appeal this decision soon, because they're expecting people to just walk away!! I'm not the anything goes type of person! Hell No!! I refuse to go down without a serious fight/appeal!! The consumer and regulatory affairs, and the insurance licensing board need to shut them down for their obvious trickery, and illegal insurance practices!

Everyone who have posted complaints on this website can't be complaining about the same thing, if it wasn't true and factual about them!!! We live in different states, and don't even know one another, so this can't be something that everyone are conspiring against them! However, if you need a reliable insurance company with morals, high-standards, and values that stand behind their name, and their customers, then purchase Aflac!! The duck (Aflac) is really what's up!! They're highly trusted, and highly recommended by many!! I would have never experience this type of crap with Aflac, if I was still with my previous employer that had it for their employees!! It breaks my heart that I no longer have Aflac coverage!!

Moving forward, if you've been recently and wrongly denied benefits via The Hartford, fight like hell in filing your appeal, and also send a carbon copy of your letter to the consumer and regulatory affairs commissioner for further review and investigation!! You can even take it a step further by sending a copy also to the Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation within your state to prompt an investigation on their inappropriate, and/or illegal insurance practices. Wishing everyone the best!!

Why are companies allowed to rip people off and cause undue stress and anxiety? Why is the Hartford still allowed to maintain a business license? The company tells you one thing and then makes up a new rule while you try to figure out the current puzzle. I've been LTD for about a year. Got them the paperwork they needed every time. Last year they decided the doctor I was seeing was not qualified and I needed to find an MD. I was 7 months pregnant with twins and had limited mobility and already worried about complications. I spoke to the rep who was the 3rd or 4th one I had had. He was by far the most insensitive. All he had to say was per policy and we sent you letters. On top of everything else, I had been searching for a doctor who not only accepted my insurance, dealt with LTD and was able to see me prior to my due date. No luck.

I let the rep know again that I have been searching and was not able to locate anyone and that I would keep searching. My o.b. send paperwork to them for disability after delivery which lasted until the end of February. February 29th they discontinued my benefits. I saw a doctor in March and notified them that the doctor needed the forms from them. James ** (the rep), said he would send them. A couple weeks went by and I called both the doctor and Hartford to check the status. The doctor had not received the forms. At no point during any of the multiple calls did James mentioned that the doctor had to be seen prior to them cutting off my benefits. Which makes no sense, because if I had seen the doctor prior to my benefits being stopped they shouldn't have been stopped. I just wish people in this kind of business would be held to a higher standard than they are.

I cannot believe these heartless money hungry people that work for the Hartford insurance company. My short term disability was 100% legitimate and payable $99 a week on top of SDI (state disability). I called on time as I was supposed to make my claim. I was met by a monotone emotionless voice who seemed very bothered by my phone call. He took my information reluctantly and needed to call me back with their decision. Their decision?

I'm insured through my job at Sephora where I've worked for full time for 11 years. I was out with a type of heart failure that caused severe swelling and lower leg ulcers and had 100% of all my paperwork from state disability to prove my claim. So I get a very happy voice on the other end of the phone when they finally decided to call back, joyfully and ecstatically giving me the great news that my claim was denied. How could that be possible?

Apparently there was a form or document missing every time I called back to check on my status. For months. Finally the short term disability check came in a little at a time. I ended up going back to work for three months before the swelling, pain and fatigue resurfaced. My SDI WAS RUNNING OUT and I had to call the Hartford again but this time for long term disability. I was told that since the second time I had to take leave was within the 90 grace period that it was not necessary to have to open a new claim. Yet here it is, one year + and I have yet to receive one red cent.

All the requests for more paperwork and missing medical info from the countless doctors I had to see, even though a simple document from state disability stating the amounts I'm eligible for was sufficient in the end for short term disability. I ended up having no tree or presents for my three children this past Christmas because I was counting on the money from Hartford to pay for at least a tree. As it turns out, the only tree you can get for $0 is one closer to New Year's Eve.

I'm not sure that anyone there truly cares about the trouble and turmoil they put people through who are sick or injured just to hold on to our money a little longer if ever even giving it at all. I truly feel cheated and scammed by the Hartford and I will notify Sephora of their indiscretions and the suffering they cause tens of thousands of trusting people right when it couldn't be a worse time to be hassled. I told them I was in a wheelchair and would need to have special care and transport to the medical records dept when they tried to deny me based on missing doctors records. They could not have cared less and required me to do it anyway or my claim would be denied.

How do they sleep at night? I bet they get big incentives and Christmas bonuses for every minute they delay a true and rightful claim. Truly the worst business in all creation. I hope their blood money gets eaten up by law suits immediately. Mine will be one of them. When you call them, their greeting says "Thank you for trusting The Hartford!" Yes, because those gullible enough to believe in them, have and will continue to provide them with their biggest and most abundant revenue. Kudos to all of us who dare to still believe... We are the bread and butter to the ugliest most vile creatures alive on this earth. The Hartford is such a creature. In my own opinion and in the countless opinions of other Hartford victims flooding the internet's complaint/review pages. I'm not impressed.

Then they waited until 9/22 to mail the forms to me to fill out to release medical records. These forms were received through the USPS on 9/29 (2 weeks after surgery). I sent all of my paperwork in on time then it took them (Daisy **) one month (10/15) to send my primary care DR the form requesting my medical records. Which by the way had nothing to do with a hysterectomy. After many calls to Hartford asking what else they needed to make a determination, they were still missing medical records. I made trips all over town gathering my own records and paying for them and paying to have them faxed to Hartford. All the while they are sitting there doing nothing.

The Dr's office told me the reason they drag their feet just as any insurance company does to keep from paying a claim, is because THEY have to pay for these records. Instead I paid to speed up the process. After 5 weeks they told me it was denied due to it being pre-existing as determined by a primary care DR I saw April 2015 because I mentioned to her I had bleeding prior to seeing her. Having said all of this I had to do all the work for them POST OP while they sit on their rear hiding behind the phone doing nothing. Thanks for your "compassion" you liars and leeches. I now have less than 900.00 to live on, surrendered my insurance and my physicians will no longer see me. I then about a week later got a letter from Hartford saying that my claim was denied and they were canceling my policy from the first day I bought it. Then they sent me my premium back.

This was a loss I could not sustain. I lost nearly 650,000.00 of equipment. I turned to my agent and they too agreed that I should be paid. We are now trying to work with Hartford attorney to get settlement. I ask if anyone out there has heard of such a thing? I am currently under care for a possible hernia which I've had two operations already on and possible shoulder surgery which I'm waiting on an MRI with contrast - both of which I have given medical documents which the doctor did not include in the report. Why? I call the doctor directly, had to get his number by changing one of the numbers on the phone that they gave to pick me up. They never did for the doctor's appointment, it done everything in their power to try and keep me from getting paid. The doctor or anything in their career of yours said it's just an opinion.

They first sent all their request to the wrong fax number, then they made me get my medical records for them, then made me get my doctors notes for them, then I gave them all the correct numbers to get a hold of Kaiser SDI department. Then Hartford tries to be sneaky and send paperwork straight to my doctor who won't fill anything out so that paper was shredded. I spoke to numerous people at Hartford and told them to stop doing that and send the papers to the numbers I gave them.

It's now almost June, they denied my SDI claiming "lack of physician information." I've already sent in my appeal and told them to get all my records for physical and mental which they didn't do in the first place and to listen to me and do their damn job. I just had my field interview with Hartford who was a former police officer. First never let them in your house. Do the interview in a public park. Beware they will tape the interview. Also they won't tell you they are video taping you at the interview. Never sit the entire interview. In fact get up and stand at least 2-3 to stretch legs. Keep in mind if you claim you are in pain you better have the medication to prove it. They will request a pharmacy list for the entire year. They are sneaky with the questions like what do you do all day? First answer every day is different so I really can't give an answer, due to pain level and taking naps. Never say you do any housework or cook or clean. They will act like your friend but remember the field rep job is to get you cut off from disability.

Do you take your garbage out how much can you lift? Can you lift a gallon of milk? You have to be careful because if you do take your garbage out they might have you on video. Never let them take your picture either. Also don't sign anything, there is 2 forms. Hartford has one, is a release on your finances which they gave no right to. Tell them you will only sign the medical release form.

Don't sign anything during the interview, tell them you need to read it and will mail it back to them. Don't let the interview go longer than 30/45 minutes. Tell them you are getting tired. One last tip when they start the recording they will ask you if it is ok, tell them you do object to the taping however you are forced to do it because of your policy. When he starts also tell them you are on heavy pain medication during the interview in case you make a mistake. Be smart, like some days I can do more than others, I just never know. I think they are going to cut mine off. Remember to bring someone with you and you also record the conversation.

I couldn't move my head from side to side, I would get extreme headaches and was in constant pain. I went to a neurosurgeon that said I was not a good candidate for surgery and that I would "just have to live with it". I was initially given the STD for a few months then it stopped. When I had to go on STD, I could no longer afford to pay my rent and other bills so my son and daughter-in-law told me to stay with them, I did. They had been sent to Germany because my daughter-in-law is in the military. I informed Hartford that I was moving over there. They said that's fine, just make sure you keep sending the forms from a doctor over there.

Well I did find a German doctor that was willing to help me. I got the medical forms and had them fax them to Hartford, they denied my money. The case worker from Hartford said, "You need to send a medical form stating to can't work and why". Well the doctor and I did that, we did everything that was required, sent in all the forms they wanted and still they denied me. Needless to say they kept all the money I put into STD and LTD for 9 yrs. They ripped me off and I'm sure they are continuing to do it to others.

Due to a fall and head/neck/back injury, I was encouraged by Biltmore Farms LLC to file a claim with Hartford Insurance. That claims process lacked honesty and integrity on the part of Hartford claims handlers. When the Asst VP became involved, she reviewed all until she found that I had forgotten to fully complete dental information related to the fall. During that time and in the years after the fall I find that I forget the head injury-exactly because of its effects on memory. There is, however, other supporting medical information to fully compensate me for lost income, pain and suffering and medical expenses.

It is no longer about the property where I fell (Hartford failed to document that it was a Biltmore Farms LLC property where I fell), it is about the fact that Hartford chose to inaccurately file the claim, chose to delete medical reports, and delete medical and dental expenses. I have been unable to work in my profession that requires onsite work; I've had to sell my home; and I had to move to be near a medical facility that specifically treats the medical issues related to the fall.

The then CEO, Liam McGee, tried to become informed of all the facts, however the main physician's report wasn't read by him. Christopher Swift is now CEO of Hartford. Mr. Swift should read all available medical reports and address the lack of honesty and integrity in the company for which he is now responsible. For more detailed account, I have filed a change.org petition at this safe site here **. Mr. Swift, I now have many more medical reports documenting the physical pain, and inability to work since the fall. I continue to educate others about Biltmore Farms LLC and Hartford Insurance. Hartford made an egregious mistake that must be rectified.

My last check, received after January 31st, indicated that my claim was closed until notes were received from my physician. I saw my Doctor on February 3rd, 2015, and notes were sent. I contacted The Hartford and notified them of this. I called the following week and was told that my check was to be released on February 25th. I never received it.

I called on March 2nd, and was told that my check was on hold. When questioned as to why, they stated that it was due to a previous claim that I told my employer not to bother with because it was for a very short time when I contracted pneumonia. Obviously, human resources sent it in. Even though this was a completely different diagnosis, and a completely different claim, they are withholding payment. And I was never informed via mail. They have demanded records every time they issue a check. Records were sent and I had to pay out of pocket for them to be sent along with filling out a release form which they never provided to me. They said that they requested records, yet my physician hadn't received anything from them.

Then March 2013 had my 3rd major spine surgery and this one has left me numb from my neck down to my toes. All 3 of my surgeries required screws, plates and fusions.

When I first got my LTD Hartford sent me a letter stating I would get LTD until retirement age. I applied for Social Security Disability and got approved in 5 months. I am very limited to what I can do and can't walk or stand for any length of time. Hartford hired a PI to watch me for 3 months. What they paid this person to watch and follow us I didn't get that kind of money a year from them. I had to appeal every 3 months and was always a hassle. This past fall they told me my appeal was denied and to seek legal counsel. So I did and was told it was going to cost roughly $30,000 and if we went to trial it would cost more.

Hartford knows this is what is going to happen and they don't care. I paid into this plan for years and now that I'm disabled and can't work or basically live I can't get what is due to me. I'm on narcotics and pain level stays at 7-8 all the time and sometimes it could be a 15 but Hartford has these people saying they are specialists saying I can work a 40 hour week and sit and stand and walk, kneel, squat, reach and lift up to 25 lbs.

They had their neurosurgeon contact my neurosurgeon to discuss my case and my dr said she cannot do any of the above. My dr asked him, "Are you a board certified neurosurgeon?" This person's response was, "Well no, I'm just qualified to read MRI's, X-Rays and CT Scans." My dr said, "I'm not talking to you any further." So now I'm living on an income of $900 a month because Hartford says there is nothing wrong with me.
