Been a customer for 18 years. Talked to their marketing dept manager. I asked after 10 years no discounts for customers but what I asked her is your donation to Green Bay Packers and Univ of Wisc. and more why not customers. She said it is a investment and the way she worded she fancy letter to like it or lump it. I asked to talk to the Pres. on Ins company. Big companies don't care. Goodluck. I am shopping for a new company.

Worst ins. co. to do business with. They sold me on all the extra rider policies for roof and siding. Had strong storm come thru and lifted shingles and water intrusion on sheathing. Adjuster called it "Snow Seepage" and that in Minnesota, because I have a 4x12 roof, the snow actually seeps past the shingles. Not ice damage, just snow seepage. Claim denied. They will sell you the world and tell you how great it is, how "We'll be here for you" and when it comes down to it they will turn and run. I'm replacing one side of my 9 year old roof due to this. My rider policy - useless. My agent... Useless. My faith in Am Fam. Gone. I will never, ever recommend Am Fam to anyone. Going forward, I will be looking elsewhere for my insurance needs. Even if it costs me more in the long run.

We have been with American Family Insurance since 2005. We had both our home and vehicles insured with them. We canceled our car insurance after a trailer backup accident with our truck, approx. 3 years later. The agent called us and was angry about the cancellation. I was shocked that an agent would do that. That was REALLY strange to us, maybe he was having a bad day? However, I kept the home insurance. My home loan company, l paid American Family Ins. our yearly premium APRIL 20th.

We received the 10 day premium for 2018 back, as our yearly insurance was due April 30. My new insurance company notified American Family about the cancellation of them on APRIL 20TH. I called and notified my agent's personnel in Yelm about our cancellation A WEEK LATER. She advised me they would be sending out a reimbursement check. She was not very informative, she did not know when the check would be issued. It has been 2 weeks since I spoke to her. After reviewing complaints on this site, I say WATCH OUT for this company... We also realized we were being overcharged for TOO LOW coverage!!! Stay away... Scary insurance company.

We had a 3 yr old water heater fail which caused extensive damage to our master bath. Our home is a custom, and the master bath has 2 large sink/counter areas on opposite walls, with a marble top. The jetted tub also has the same marble surround. When we realized that the marble counter and surround would break during demolition, I asked about matching the marble to the other sink/counter on the opposite side of the bathroom. American Family Insurance states “no,” saying that only damaged items would be replaced and that our policy doesn’t call for matching existing construction. Bear in mind we have our home insured for over 1.3 million. When I told the adjuster that this was unacceptable, he just stated... sorry. NEVER buy a policy with American Family.

Our experience was absolutely TERRIBLE. Our home had damage due a hail storm. Submitted claim, AmFam's adjuster came out and assessed home damage- submitted. Quality Assurance came out and agreed with initial adjuster and actually said it was underestimated just slightly. The desk adjuster denied both AmFam's adjuster and QA and never once viewed our home and denied 75% of the claim- said I guess you will need to go appraisal. Appraisal means paying for another home inspection from an outside adjuster and umpire- another $2100 in addition to your deductible. Guess what- they agreed with the initial adjuster.

What I have gathered, many people will avoid appraisal- and guess how much that saves AmFam? They were anything but honest, respectful or helpful. I am grateful that my home was not destroyed, I cannot imagine the compounded stress of that and working with such a dishonest insurance company. To top it all off they will only cover 80% of our home, and the last 20 percent that did not match, repeating our agents' words: "We don't care if one side is one color and the other side a complete different color, we don't care. Even if you had another supplement added, it doesn't necessarily matter". I would advise STAY AWAY.

We have been a loyal customer of the same agent for 13 years and American Family. We have had minimal claims. Our property values have increased so therefore so has our insurance and the $$$ going into their pockets (agent and AmFam). They never contact us to review our policy at renewal time or check to ensure we have the appropriate coverage but continue to raise our rates. Happy to announce that we have found a new agent and insurance company who is effectively saving us 20% as well as providing excellent customer service. When I contacted our agent to advise...after 13 years he didn't even act like it mattered. I wish it didn't matter to me when I lost a customer. Must be nice to be that flush. You must be when you are underinsuring by 200k on someone's house and overcharging by 20%. Thank goodness it didn't burn down. Good luck to American Family and our agent in Shawnee KS and may you go bankrupt soon!!!

We've owned our home for 7 years now, and have had 2 insurance claims. Both were handled quickly by AmFam. Our agent is kind, and very thorough when reviewing our coverage. Our first claim was only a few months after we had moved in. Our A/C went out just before the arrival of the dreaded AZ summer. The repairman we called out said that we needed a new unit and that it looked like ours had hail damage (there had just been a big hail storm in the area). He advised us to call our insurance company. The AmFam inspector came out the day after I called to start the claim. He went up on our roof and around all exterior sides. He agreed that we needed a new A/C, and also a new roof, a new shed, stucco repair/repainting, and several new window screens. The entire process was amazingly fast and SO easy. They really walked us through everything step by step and helped us find reputable companies to do the work.

Our second claim was a year or two later. A drunk driver plowed through the block wall that surrounds our backyard. Destroying our pool pump/filter and knocking several cinder blocks into our pool. His insurance was taking a very long time to do anything about it, so AmFam sent out an inspector right away. They paid for a new cinder block fence, the stucco on said fence, a new pool pump/filter, and for the pool to be resurfaced. Then they did all the work to get repaid through his insurance. It was, again, very fast and completely painless for us. We have home/auto/life through them and recommend the company to anyone seeking insurance. Especially those who live in our area.

We had a major storm (hail) that hit last summer and we were out of town. We had met with a contractor on damage on our home and had some coverage for the siding, not the downspouts or the roof. Clear easy to spot hail damage on the downspouts. Our neighbors all with different coverage/ins had their roofs replaced all with different insurance companies. The adjuster would not go on our roof and had to reschedule a different date for another adjuster to do the claim (write up).

Our house is ranch style, with an area that I wouldn't even consider steep. The first adjuster however wrote up the report. LOL! He denied any damage on our roof and when I asked for a second opinion (independent contractor/etc) to review the roof he denied this, as we worked up the chain of command we were able to work with someone that was able to see the damage on new photos that were taken.

The lady asked if we had anyone else referred/or on our roof- No one, or a second opinion. She had seen pics and I stated no. The 1st adjuster who didn't get on our roof stated no we couldn't have a second opinion. The lady stated "Well this looks like significant damage on your roof" and, "I would like to have our roofing engineers come out and take a look." ;) They found only two small areas where there was damage and sent us a check that wouldn't cover 3 downspouts. LOL... 23 years working with them and we have only had a few claims... In the process of dropping them.

She's been dragging her feet with paying my claim and looking for any and every reason to deduct from the settlement. She had the nerves to ask if I'd found another apartment yet, like I'm some moocher. I found one a week after the fire, shes holding up the process. Never again.

April 2017 we had a tree fall through our home in a wind storm. Everything was going along well until the final invoice from our contractor was submitted. Our claim was a large claim given one end of our home had to be completely torn down and rebuilt. The damaged end of the home included the living room with a wood stove and the master bedroom. We were told the wood stove needed replaced because it didn't meet an emission code and once removed from the home it could not be put back in. So, the contractors installed a new stove. All we asked was our home have a functioning wood stove just as it did before the damage. Our home is a rambler and it required the entire length of roofing removed. The engineer American Family hired stated the sheeting underneath needed to be re-nailed due to shock wave from being hit so hard by the tree. The tree hit all the way to the foundation.

When the final invoice was submitted, American Family said the garage area was not damaged by the tree so they would not cover that portion of new roofing. How is it that all the roof is affected by shock wave except the area over the garage? They attempted to meet the old portion to the new portion and it looked horrible due to the thickness of the old roof. It certainly wasn't the way it looked before. And even though the contractors gave American Family the ordinance papers showing the wood stove could not be replaced, they say it could have just been cleaned. Why would the contractors install an unapproved stove and then be liable for it if or when it failed?

Our home was completed two months ago and the invoice submitted. The contractors did a good job getting it back to the way it was. We were assured that American Family would pay for that to happen, yet I have an $8300 balance they don't want to cover! In good faith we pay our premiums to ensure that in the event of a disaster our home can be as it once was. You certainly would expect your insurance to pay the contractors for the work they did to restore your home.

American Family Insurance fraudulently switched my insurance policy from replacement value to actual cash value without my knowledge or consent (I have an admission from the agent that they did this in writing in an email). I contacted my agent and demanded repeatedly in emails he switch it back. I found out he hadn't when they then denied a claim the next year. My roof was damaged and the interior walls were saturated with rain water. They denied it citing they exclude damage caused by animal "nesting".

They provided no proof whatsoever that an animal caused the damage. There was no evidence of an animal was ever present, ie, there were no scratch marks, bite marks, hair, or droppings etc. Furthermore, there were insurance claims at other properties in the area due to storm damage around that same time. I complained through their channels and got NO HELP. A public insurance adjuster just recommend I get a lawyer because what they did was so wrong.

I have been with AMFAM for about 5 or 6 years. Late last year I noticed shingles were missing from my roof so my husband started calling contractors so we could find out how much the repairs would be. We received 2 quotes and both said it was due to wind damage and needed to be replaced. They said to contact your insurance because they have to pay for the damage. Not until they said contact your insurance company that never crossed my mind. This is my husband and I first home and first time having such a BIG problem so I just assumed as homeowners we were responsible, it completely went over my head that we have homeowners insurance for things like this. Well, AMFAM made me wish I had just remained ignorant to what homeowners insurance is supposed to pay for.

When I called my agent he suggested that I have a reputable company that he has dealt within the past come out to look at it before putting in a claim because once you file a claim it remains on your account whether they pay or not. So we contacted this company and they said the exact same thing the other contractors said. I put the claim in and the drama began.

The adjuster contacted me and seemed more interested in the fact that my roof was 8 years old than he did with the wind damage. Before he even came to the house he asked me on the phone how old was my roof, when I told him it was 8 years old, he said, "Oh, it's gonna need to be replaced soon anyway." That was the first strike. I arranged for a contractor to meet him at the house because he said he didn't have a ladder high enough to get on the roof. A few weeks later I received his results stating that repairs would cost $200-300 and my deductible was more than that so they would pay nothing and that my roof was deteriorating. When I called him he said he just didn't think it needed to be replaced due to the damage because the wind damage was minor and that I still have a couple of years before I need to replace it.

I waited for about a month and let all that soak in and decided to file an appeal. The roofing company's owner that we decided to go with used to be an adjuster and he said that he could represent me with the company and that it would be a tough fight because he has dealt with them before and they are the worst company when it comes to paying for a roof. He said they almost never approve for a roof to be replaced. Well, he was right. AMFAM did everything they could to avoid and deny my claim. They actually even changed adjusters on me 3 times in one week. And then they had the nerve to send me a letter advising that they would no longer allow me to keep the roofing coverage I have on my policy, they were changing it to a cash roofing policy, which means if they have to pay anything on the roof, they would pay based on the age of the roof.

They stopped returning calls and refused to talk to me because they said I had representation and they could only speak to him. In the beginning they asked for pictures and once the pictures were sent (several times) they kept saying they did not receive them. My new policy took effect on August 13th but we started this process way before then and they made sure they held out until then. I just decided that if they will not pay, I would rather pay for it myself instead of having a paid out claim on my record and not be able to find another company because of the claim. They treated us so poorly that it kills me to still be with them to this day. I am definitely searching and getting quotes from other companies because I refuse to remain with a company that treats paying customers like this. And I forgot to mention that they refused to send out another adjuster to look at the roof a second time.

I have been a customer of American Family for 33 years with homeowners, auto, boat, and life ins. This past year I had my roof blow off large sections of my roof due to high winds, I called Am Scam to file a claim. I was told to get someone out to repair what they could so that no further damage of the interior would be damaged and they would reimburse me. Did that... They sent out an adjuster who then stated, “Oh it’s fixed.” So they would apply it to my deductible, nothing further they can do. Two weeks later the temporary fix, blew off again with much more this time. I called back, apparently they open a second claim, (which should still be the first claim) for them to tell me, “Wind damage is not covered.” After much arguing I ended up paying for a whole new roof out of pocket. 10K...

Now, I try to get away from this awful company to find out no other insurance company will quote me because I have two claims, which paid out 0... For 3 years, I cannot even get a quote. Furthermore, the broker who has appeared to be a friend for 33+ years tells me, “Oh, that's strange” because he and his secretary both just got new roofs paid for by Am Fam. Umm, how does this make me feel better???

I threaten to cancel all my coverage, and he says, “It’s ok I don't make that much money on your stuff anyway!!!” REALLY!!! His name is Sam ** out of Buffalo Grove... STAY CLEAR!!! Now I'm stuck with this terrible company until 2019. Thanks for all your help Sam. NOTHING... and I warn all you consumers to avoid this company. PS. Most of the houses in my sub division got all new roofs paid for by State Farm and other good reputable companies. I am the only one who wasn't covered by insurance for wind damage. I purchased a second vehicle. I then decided to add to my auto insurance policy auto loan gap coverage since I had 2 loans! I called the home office and requested that auto gap loan coverage be added to my premium. American Family's agent was glad to do so. Gap Loan coverage as most people understand to be pays off the loan if your car is totaled in an accident. The agent never clarified for me that what they sell is called Loan Assistance Coverage and pays only 25% of the negative balance should your vehicle be totaled. Had the agent done so I would have not purchased this ridiculous product!

Of course a few months after I added this to my policy the car was in fact totaled as it sat in a parking lot by a semi! It was only after the fact, and nearly a month after the accident and with repeated efforts on my part to talk to someone about Gap Coverage (see definition of runaround in dictionary!) that I finally received a email from the home office informing me that my coverage would pay only 25% of the remaining balance of the loan! I clearly stated that I wanted full auto loan Gap Coverage for my cars during my call to the home office. I am now left holding a bag for nearly $4,000.00!

I live in Minnesota. The Department of Commerce has informed me that they need to see the original policy to see if they have in fact done anything wrong. My policy does state that I added Loan Assistance Coverage; but I never sat down and read what I actually bought. Why wouldn't I trust an insurance agency that has been around for decades? So Commerce has informed me that it may be in fact too late to do anything despite being manipulated by my own insurance company! I am going to file a complaint with the BBB and Commerce anyway because I feel that it is just plain wrong what they have done. Do not trust this company! I truly wish that I had checked them out beforehand.

I live in an area with lots of hail – which can’t be avoided. And that is exactly WHY I have insurance.

I have had many awesome offers of insurance over the years at a better rate, but chose to stay loyal to American Family despite the opportunity to save considerable money. Yet after these claims, American Family dropped me like a hot potato. The real kicker was that I found out they had not renewed my home policy BY ACCIDENT. I called to ask a question and was told by my local agent that my homeowner's policy had NOT been renewed! The local agent said that a letter had been sent to inform me several months earlier... a letter I had NEVER received. I didn’t receive any additional notices or even a courtesy call from my local agent to discuss this decision with me. My local agent clearly dropped the ball on this one!

After my entire family has remained loyal to American Family for fifty years plus – brother, sisters, niece, nephews, mother, children… I am greatly disappointed. I will now have to go back and tell the many people who I recommended American Family to about the way I was treated. This is a truly lousy way to treat a long term loyal customers. We called American Family and were told they would file a claim and have a person come out to do an estimate for repair. An adjuster came out and did the estimate and American Family approved it. They started to tear out the ceiling and drywall and found vermiculite. The repairs had to stop and get tested for asbestos. When the test came back hot American Family then turned around and denied the claim stating they had adjusted the homeowners policy, even though we pay for the highest priced one, gold package as they call it.

They stated we just put it in place and will not cover any removal or repairs to a home with asbestos. What this means is anyone with any sort of insulation before 190 is no longer covered for any repairs! They refused to work with us and even refused to have the gigantic holes fixed and told us we should just put a board over them and if we did nothing to stop the damage from spreading they would drop us. Thankfully, we were able to work things out with the contractor to make sure they did the necessary work to bring the roof up to code, but I would not recommend American Family to anyone!

The lower premiums is not worth the headache. My car has been in the shop for ONE MONTH. American Family is giving Honda a difficult time paying claim. American Family is just making this more difficult than it needs to be. They're paying claims in parts which is delaying the progress of repairs. This isn't my first rodeo, and I know the process. American Family do not want to PAY so they're doing everything possible to avoid paying. The very first chance I get I will be definitely finding a new insurance company. I'm willing to pay more in order to get better customer services.

Had my homeowner's & auto insurance bundled together for at least 20 yrs, never had a claim. I had a medical issue and somewhere in that time my garage roof somehow got a hole in the shingled roof. (I think it was a firework shot off by neighbors... can't prove which one) Anyway the leak caused a couple of the trusses to break from water. Made a call to my agent and she advised me that my insurance had lapsed like 3 months ago on my house, but not your car. I was befuddled because I had auto pay monthly. She looked it up and said, "somewhere along the line your payment on your home was 30.00 short, so it lapsed." So I asked, "Why didn't my auto lapse also?" "We just kept your monthly auto pay all towards your car." I could not believe what I was hearing coming out of this agent's mouth.

I asked why you (agent) did not contact me over this matter. She claimed she did by letter. I never received any communication in any form. Agent had my email address, agent had my telephone number, my work number. Ok so I missed the letter, I didn't... but maybe I overlooked it. My house had a mortgage, so I had to have homeowner's insurance. So I got a hold of the bank and they never had received any communication regarding my insurance lapse. The agent by law has to let the bank know of any lapse or cancellation in my homeowner's policy. I could go on. This is sounds to me a common problem with American Family. So I tried to file again, then they said I was late. Then recently received a letter from American Family stating that they had broken the law in the state of Indiana for claim filing.

The agent has repeatedly tried to get my business back, leaving me voicemails on my phone, instructing me to return their call. Now my garage is in total disarray. I had lost my job of 16 yrs due to my medical condition. Now my city is fining me because my garage is not up to code. Thank you American Family, after 20 yrs of loyalty. Over what would have been a small claim, they chose the low road. Awful business practices. Now I know what they mean when they say if you have American Family insurance, you better also keep in touch with your lawyer.

I was lied to by my agent Nicole ** with American Family in Fenton, Mo. about a supplemental policy called a 535 which would have replaced my steel siding after a storm. I was told by the adjuster Mr. **, who viewed my damage after a storm, that if I carried that policy that my steel siding and roof would have been replaced in it's entirety had I had the endorsement. But because my agent NEVER ONCE MENTIONED this endorsement to me in our initial consultation, I had NO CLUE it even existed. Now she claims that she would have offered it if I had sat down with her last year for a review. Well, why would I sit down for another consultation for my insurance if nothing had changed financially, dwelling wise or content? This is often viewed as a way for an agent to up sell you more product, but as American Family Insurance, they use it as a way to say you were denied coverage because you didn't come in for a yearly consultation!

I was sent a letter from Kenneth Ray ** today that states the outcome of my coverage would not have made any difference on my roof being replaced. What that means in layman terms is that even though you have home owners and you have a third of your roof damaged and we may not be able to match it, that you are not getting a new roof and we do not care if it is mismatched. Secondly Kenny, you failed to mention that if your agent Nicole ** would have offered the 535 that indeed my steel siding would have been replaced, but again you are happy your company is saving money by denying my steel siding being matched as well.

BEWARE OF AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE and make sure you got to a company that ask you to sign off on refused amendments offered! If not, you may get an agent who lies about offering it to you in the first place as I did.

WARNING!!! I would stay away from this company. I had been with them for 25 years paying out huge premiums (because they were suppose to have the best coverage). Dealing with them upping my premiums on my home every year by increasing the home's value by 10 to 15 thousand a year (on a 170 thousand dollar home). Every year after their auto adjusting increasing my home's value 10 to 20 thousand I would have to call my agent to have him re-figure the limits usually dropping the ins value by 20 to 30 thousand. Ultimately, this is every couple years folks! This would in turn lower my yearly premium by 400 dollars a year. That in itself is ridiculous.

But after 25 years and no claims I got a letter from AMFAM stating that a vehicle in my driveway had to have current license plates on it and that I had 1 year from the date of the letter or I would be canceled on my homeowners ins. This is a vehicle that I had bought to fix a few things on and then sell it. This was all cleared up in a matter of a month but this was the last string for me. I even called the main office and the person in charge of the letter stated that a unlicensed vehicle in my driveway posed a greater risk to them as my ins company than one that had plates on the vehicle.

I tried to point out the logic that license plates on a vehicle are sharp and someone's chance of getting hurt with a vehicle in my driveway were greater with plates on them than without. And it's not like I didn't have auto ins with them because I did on 2 vehicles. And she told me she didn't care and if I wanted to continue to be insured by them then I would register and plate any vehicles in my driveway.

This is what made me start comparing policy premiums to other companies. I was blown away at how greedy AMFAM has gotten over the years as they really WERE a great company years ago. On 170 thousand dollar home this year after my ins was adjusted back down from "AMFAM's version of inflation" my premium was 2900 dollars a year and I am signed onto a different ins company now (one of the top 10 rated on this site) and my yearly ins premium is 1200. For the exact same coverage, that's less than half People!

I can't wrap my mind around the price difference. It has become abundantly clear that AMFAM is no longer about taking care of its policyholders, but only about feeding its overstuffed stuffed ceo's and shareholder's pockets. To put this into perspective, over the last 25 years of premiums that's 72 thousand dollars I've paid them and never a claim. But a unlicensed vehicle in my driveway and I get a "change this, or you're out the door" letter. I would strongly discourage anyone from signing on with this company or if you already are then do yourself a huge favor, Shop around for ins. By the way this is only home coverage not even including my vehicle premiums. Stay away from American Family Insurance!!!

And we would like to state for the record that I asked my agent time and time again on how to present the list for your review. Because I have never had to compile a list such as this of inventory for personal property is the only reason why the before list that was sent of items was not compiled in such a way is because no one wanted to walk me through on how to place the items on the list as far as the categories are concerned.

The first time I did a claim on my home what was asked of me this time around was not asked of me the very first time. I asked my agent and claims adjuster on how to place the list and not one person from the company wanted to take the time to assist me in creating the list. Now I am not the smartest apple from the tree but if someone have done their job the correct way then I feel I would not be at this point. Only american family is aware of how the list is suppose to look when the claim is filed. I asked my agent was there a company that could assist me in forming the list and I was told that they knew of no one. I have had to teach myself everything I know today about how to handle a claim with my insurance company.

I thought I was paying for the policy and for someone to be my agent and work alongside me regardless to what the situation has been. Yes I have lost my cool with my agent and claim handler but only because no one wanted to assist me in any type of way. Instead of telling me that the list was not the way the insurance company would like to see the list, they instead send me for an IOU because of thought of fraud because of the lists that was sent to them because of lack of help and knowledge for my own knowing. No one has went over the policy once again with me to make sure I am aware of the knowledge and steps that are taken when going to the CLAIM process.

No one explain the steps of the IOU or information of why they were sending to do the statements under oath. I feel like the blind leading the blind. I am a first time policyholder and I feel like I been rooted into a scam to pay for something every month to having to do all the work to handle this claim as a whole. You want the consumer to do what has to be done when processing the claim like calling the police at the touch of a button, gathering receipts and pictures and all of the above to prove proof of purchase then place a list together stating where you purchased and how the items were purchased, when the items were purchased and item cost at the time of purchase as well as date of loss then to turn around and show where the item can be bought again.

Now because of the mishaps with the first claim and how horrible I was treated as a first time consumer. I got angry because once again I am back in the same boat and have show all the information I can totally share with my insurance agent after being told by my agent that I am basically not important to be given a call stating that she was sorry for my loss. But instead she says she basically didn't have the time to reach out to me. This should have been the time for my agent to go over my policy with me making sure that I understand what is suppose to be compiled for the claims handler. I feel my agent hung me out to dry then the claims handler who continued to take his time in doing anything for me and not going over my policy with me or asking me do I understand what the company is asking of me. If everything would have been explained to me then we would not be at this point once again.

I had the same issue with my agent and claims handler last claim that was submitted and because the company can deny me made me feel more on edge about it all. Yes I was consistent in knowing and understanding about this claim. But every time I would reach out to my agent or claims handler I would hit a road block and get nowhere.

My husband and I downsized and moved north after our youngest child went off to college. We bought an 1100 square foot ranch with an attached garage for $110,000. Our agent came to the property, took pictures, etc. Our premium was about $600/year when we purchased the house. The next year upon renewal I opened our bill and the policy had gone to $700/year. When I looked at the policy I saw I was insured for a 1400 square foot L-shaped ranch for $250,000. I called my agent and told him this was incorrect and our house was not 1400 square feet and he had seen the house. I was informed this is what the underwriters had decided and the reason for the $250,00 was because I had the "gold" policy that would pay for everything new, not just replacement.

I then several months later got a letter from AmFam stating that, because my roof was in "poor condition", if something happened to it, we would not be given full value to replace it, but partial. I called and asked why I was paying for the "gold" policy on a 40-year-old house when everything is aging? I might add, we had the house inspected upon buying it and were told the roof was in very good condition.

I got my bill this year and my rate is now $800/year, a $200 increase in 3 years. We have NEVER made a claim against AmFam and I have been with them for approximately 25 years. When I looked at my latest policy, there is a "dangerous dog" charge. We have a Sheltie and a Beagle. When I called my agent, I was told this charge is on there because we "might" in the future get a dangerous dog. Whatever! Also, for instance, if my daughter (who is 22) was bitten by a cat, her medical bills would be covered?! What a scam. I would definitely recommend shopping around for homeowners' insurance.

The field adjuster said that he would come look at my storm damage when he could get some free time. Finally two weeks later All American Family Insurance in Mt. First the agent at that Mt. The water was also coming through the walls and ceiling upstairs as well. Naturally I called my local agent Pete **. He started a claim, the adjuster showed up 2 days later with a mitigation company, they tore out all my insulation in the upstairs living areas and put fans and dehumidifiers in. They said they would be back daily to check on them. The very next day we waited for 4 hours, no show by ERS "Don" or Troy the owner, however they did document RH % for the day they were not there. The crew was completely unprofessional. Our adjuster assured us that we had the best policy on the market--an HO5 for water damage and that she would get us put back together as soon as possible.

As it turns out 5 weeks later, many phone calls on our part a structural engineer later, there is an exclusion, in fact it's in all homeowner's policies. They are denying our claim on a "design issue" which I might add was designed long before either I or my husband were born. They don't have to pay for any repairs, they don't even need to put the insulation back in they pulled out. The adjuster Sharon was even delighted in telling me they don't have to pay for anything. Best part, we got 2 days notice we needed to be out of where are currently residing, and only because I called. American Family Homeowners is like legal fraud.

Been with AmFam for 40 years... then we had an accidental house fire. DO NOT USE CRDN or SERVICE MASTER to restore your property. AmFam brought them to our damaged home and urged us to use them... AmFam said they would pay them. These 3rd party companies gave us no estimates, no rates... Weeks later, after they had our property removed from the home, AmFam then begins to explain the process to us... We are the ones who will pay them. The cost of their services reduces the compensation for our losses... all the invoices were sent directly to AmFam so we had no idea what the cost of using them was... we only got copies of the costs after we demanded to know what the were.

The cost of their services vastly exceeded the value our possessions... by using their services to "clean" our old, worn, out of fashion clothes we could not turn them the lost into AmFam to be replaced with brand new fashionable clothing as part of the property replacement cost damages. CRDN is not working for you, they are working for the insurance company but you have to pay them for that. CRDN advertises to the insurance company that they will save them up to 84% of the cost to replace clothing... that is the new clothing we could have gotten by NOT using CRDN and you have to pay CRDN the other 16% from your reimbursement by the insurance. For example: instead of you getting $200 to buy a new pair of shoes, pants, shirt... then insurance gives you $30 to CRDN to clean your old worn items... you get $0 in value, insurance saves 85%, CRDN gets 16% of what should have been yours.

I was with American Family Insurance for 32+ years. They insured everything for me. Last fall, while I was in the hospital, a mechanical failure in my septic tank caused septic waste to back up into my finished basement. Amfam brought out Servicemaster, who not only broke possessions (they did later, after much difficulty, compensate me for the damages) but also did a poor overall job of waste/mold remediation, leaving pieces of moldy carpeting in the basement and failing to clean out the contents of affected closets, areas under the stairs, etc. I had significant amounts of mold in my basement 5+ months after Servicemaster claimed to have cleaned it.

It took Amfam almost five months to issue the first payment on personal property damages. The adjuster made pejorative remarks about the condition of a personal property item. Their payment spreadsheets are very hard to understand. I submitted claims for payment of replaced items in August. It's now late December and I was required by the property claims manager to submit a statement of loss before they would issue any additional payment. They cancelled my policy in the end. Basically my home has severe hail damages, I have three different roof consultant companies inspected and claimed the roof indeed had sufficient damages which should qualified for whole roof replacement. The AmFam adjuster and his ladder consultant only agreed half of the roof to be hail damaged and denied the other half. Even my roof consultant showed the obvious hail damages in front of them. The adjuster afterwards estimates had many errors and mistakes, trying to bring the replacement cost to minimum. I tried to request the second inspection/opinion, but refused as they told me they would hire the engineer to do the evaluation. They tried to avoid the discussion for their original adjuster when I brought many mistakes and errors in his estimation report. Sounds like they tried to protect/hide the original adjuster's mistakes.

It's even more surprising with their fire engineer's behavior. Donan engineering hired by AmFam got on the roof with my roof consultant and my roof consultant's partner during the examination. On the roof the engineer agreed that almost all the slopes have hail damages, especially the roof facing to the right direction (which were denied by AmFam adjuster and his ladder before), they marked the hail damages, and the engineer even said to my roof consultant and his partner that "We found hails on all slopes and American Family should be paying for it anyway".

However in his final report after 2 weeks, he did not mention a single word about hail damages on slopes facing right. I am so surprised why the engineer did not tell the truth in his report. I am extremely unhappy with the way my claim is handled, I am paying AmFam more than $6000 a year insurance premium, and this is what I got at the end. I recently was on a dive trip in Florida and had some EXPENSIVE gear stolen out of my boyfriend's truck and thought I was never going to dive again after spending all this time and money collecting my gear! Well after filing a police report they mentioned that my homeowners policy would most likely be the one to cover this if any. So after I got back home to GA I contacted my agent who then put me in contact with the claims people of American Family and started the process that I was dreading!

Well, to my surprise it was so easy. My claims adjuster was extremely helpful, very respectful and seemed like she genuinely cared that I got all my stolen stuff back! The phone interview that was recorded and put on record took about 1.25 hours and then the wait started. I was really pleased that it only took 7 days and she called me and let me know about the settlement amount and how explained line by line. In about 4 or 5 days later I received my check and was able to start purchasing all my gear back. I was extremely upset about this whole incident that happened to me and so glad that they were able to make it a good thing in the end! I would highly recommend American Family to my friends and family. I have only been a customer of theirs since July 2014 and will be with them for a looooong time! VERY HAPPY!

After the payout was made, I received a letter from American Family Home that my policy was being cancelled because I do not live at the premises. I have two homes in two states where I spend equal amount of time between the two residences. They are both occupied with family members and are never unoccupied. These insurance companies only want policyholders to pay their premiums but not submit any claims. The moment you do submit a claim, they cancel your policy. Please stay away from American Family Insurance. They are garbage.

MY next door neighbor has American Family Insurance and he filed a claim to cover the damage his Sissoo tree roots did to my back patio pavers, block wall, garden, Polynesian Fire pit and sprinkler system. For the past year I noticed that a crack appearing in the pavers on the back patio. I wasn't sure but suspected that his roots to his Sissoo tree that was planted 5 feet from the block wall was causing the damage. These 2 trees were planted within 15 feet of our house and patio.

Then recently I noticed that a small water leak developed around a sprinkler head by the Polynesian fire pit. I started digging around the head to determine the source of the leak. Roots from that Darn tree had grown so tight around the riser that it cracked it. I then started digging to trace the source. From 35-40 feet away these roots from his tree had taken over my whole back yard. Contacted my neighbor and he filed a claim that American Family Insurance doesn't want to honor.

I talked to the neighbor's Gardener and found out that my neighbor turns the water off for 6 months during winter to save money. When I dug up most of the major roots and shut off my water for 3 months his tree started to die. ** of American Family Insurance called me yesterday and told me that they didn't see any negligence on my neighbor's behalf. She did say that they would give me a $1000 dollars as a good neighbor policy to help cover the damage. I had a professional company come estimate the cost to repair everything. It was a little more than $11,000 plus not to mention what I would have to pay for painting the walls to match after they were repaired. Don't buy insurance from crooks. It won't cover anything. I now have to get a lawyer to make up the difference on their pathetic offer.

I had an adjuster come out to look at wind damage to my roof. (This is my experience and opinions). He came and sat in his car while the Ladder Assist company did the inspection. When the ladder assist began giving the adjuster his findings, the adjuster refused to consider brittleness or pliability of the shingles. The ladder assist listed 58"+" shingles as wind damage and that the roof failed brittleness and pliability. American Family stated they would only pay for the 58 shingles and would not consider the "+" shingles. I asked for a second inspection and was told that American Family will only pay for the actual damaged shingles and in no way insures the any shingles that would be damaged in the repair and that if all would be damaged during repair that it is not their problem.

What did I pay the premiums for? I didn't ask for a new roof but other adjusters and roofers are all saying that my roof needs to be completely replaced now. I escalated it to the adjusters supervisor and their Corporate Branch Property Claim Manager. Again no one will address the fact all are saying the roof needs more than what they are trying to force a settlement for. The adjusters are rude and disrespectful. I caught the adjusters supervisor trying to use portions of the policy to deny my claim that didn't even apply to the claim. I don't have a big roof either. I am hiring a public adjuster to pursue further. From my experience, I hope no one else has to go through the same. Look at the headlines for them with AM best ratings. In my opinion, there total goal is to keep drastically increasing rates while drastically reducing claim payouts. It seems as though they will go to any length to accomplish padding their pockets.

I have business insurance with AMFAM and my company experienced a major loss on 10/30/2013. Since then, I have been getting the run around during the claims process. They paid the maximum total of my business personal property after they tried to get me to settle for the amount, but I refused because there were additional losses that had occurred. Even though I refused their settlement, they are using tactic after tactic to get me as close to that settlement amount possible. It appears as if they are trying to force the settlement on me. They knew that I had incurred a larger loss than my personal property to begin with so it would make sense why they would want me to settle for that total. After evaluating the business loss income and expenses as well as other losses that were mentioned in my policy, I am so glad that I didn't sign on the dotted line to accept that settlement as they would have only been liable for that amount and I would have taken a loss of over 100k. I am still in the process (after an entire year) of trying to recover my losses. I have had to file my second complaint with the Officer of Commission for my state. I would never ever recommend them to anyone.

I received a letter in the mail stating that they would not renew my policy but did I care? Hell no! I would have renewed with them anyway and had made this clear when I saw how my claim was being handled. The adjusters are out of the office every other day for days at a time. They have only two adjusters working on my claim and it is a huge claim. Whenever I call to get a status update, I am told no one can give me that status by my claims adjusters who are always "out of the office." I was refused the supervisor's information for quite sometime although I knew that she was very well aware of what was happening. It seems as if the supervisors put the adjusters up to doing their dirty work by using many deceptive and misleading tactics to possibly cause one to give up on the processing of their claim and just take what they can get. I made it very clear, I am not going to accept what they want to give me if it's not fair. The reason that I pay for insurance is to protect my asset. AMFAM claims that they are one of the best insurance companies out there and I am not sure if they used to be at one point but my experience has been a disaster.

I would never ever recommend this place to anyone. And another thing, it seems as when AMFAM does decide to pay out claims it is close to month end or year end to save the numbers on the financial statements. It's ridiculous. They will never get my business again. Would give them a NEGATIVE 15 stars for their actions.

Phoenix, AZ. We had several storms in September 2014. The amount of rain and wind was extremely unusual. 76 mile an hour gusts and 5 inches of rain in 36 hour period of time. I sustained heavy damage so I asked American Family to step up and do the right and fix my house as I pay almost $200 a month in fees for my house. They sent a catastrophe team here from Texas. Their first day out here, they had a meeting with management officials to go over policies and legal terms to teach these adjusters how to deny or chisel away at people's honest claims for damages sustained. They will argue crack vs hole. Seepage vs pipe burst. Wind vs breeze. Sand vs hail. If you have a policy with Am-Fam or you are thinking about it, you need to get an attorney to carefully review it and then move on to a more reputable insurance company. Still have an attorney review your policy before signing. Lesson learned. Now, I am screwed and have to take out a loan to repair my house because of these crooks.

It is my opinion that throughout this entire process American Family Insurance has vigorously tried through out this entire process to deny this claim. The first battle was with Scott ** - a contractor hired by American Family Insurance in response to the overwhelming number of claims filed in this area after the May 28th 2012 hailstorm. He showed up without a ladder and without so much as a business card but proceeded dispute our claim. If my father hadn't driven three hours to be present with me at this time, I know without a doubt that I would have been steam rolled as his manners were belligerent and quite nasty. My dad continued to try to follow up with him in order to obtain a prompt acceptance of my claim. The claim was accepted 06/11/2012.

On 6/28/2012, the contractor who had submitted our first estimate - prepared a new estimate, as he realized that the scope of the work was much larger than he had previously realized. We promptly submitted this new estimate to my local insurance agent - Shane **. Again, American Family Insurance as represented by Catastrophe Adjuster Nelson ** was reluctant to give approval. Once again, we had to fight to get this claim resolved. It involved several phone calls and possible threat of a lawsuit to get them to accept this additional settlement amount. On 07/18/ 2012 they finally sent a letter approving settlement amount. By this time, however, our local roofing contractors were flooded by overwhelming demand for work. I went from being somewhere at the front of the line to way in the back.

Local quality contractors were working at least two to three months out and each time I contacted them I was informed that they were still two to three months out. They would show me a stack of proposals and contracts that were ahead of me. Eventually I was told that requests for work were pushing new projects into the Spring of 2013. I could do nothing but watch in frustration as many of my neighbors' homes received new roofs and siding. At that point in September both my father and I were advised by various local contractors as well as a local American Family Insurance Claims Adjuster/Inspector that it is not recommended to have an asphalt roof replaced in colder weather as it affect the quality of the roofing work. They explained that we should resign ourselves to waiting until after the upcoming winter.

On September 14th, 2012, I sent a certified letter to American Family Insurance Group - Catastrophe Claims Service informing them that due to the catastrophic nature of the hailstorm of 5/28/2012 followed closely by another local natural flooding disaster and combined with the difficulties that we encountered trying to resolve this claim - it was very unlikely that we would be able to secure a contractor within the one year time frame. I did not receive any notice from American Family Insurance regarding my letter but I did receive a voice mail message asking me to call a 1800 number.

I stopped in to talk with my local American Family agent Shane and he told me that he had received a copy of my letter. I asked him if he knew why I was being asked to call his corporate offices and he told me that his company had questions about my expressing concerns about going into winter with my roof not being repaired. I told him that my local contractor had assured me that my roof would be ok until Spring. He told me that was what they needed to know and that it was fine. I left his office, assured that everything was taken care of.

The prolonged winter weather in this area including record cold temps and snowfall prevented hardly and roofing work from beginning until May. I repeatedly contacted the roofer who had been recommended by the American Family Claims Adjuster/Inspector and he told me that he would take care of it. He asked me if I had contacted my insurance company and explained my need for an extension and I told him that I had. He assured me that I had nothing to worry about and he would get to it as soon. I called him repeatedly trying to pin him down and get a contract signed with a start time and completion date. I eventually had to let him know that I would have to contact another roofing contractor if he didn't act.

I signed an estimate/contract with my contractor and gave him a down payment on the day his company began working on my roof on July 29th. On Friday August 2nd my roofing contractor asked me to call Christy ** of American Family Insurance @ 1-866- 881- 4318 ext ** to confirm that the work was being completed and to go ahead and release the rest of the money for my claim. She informed me for the first time that American Family Insurance would not be paying on my claim because the one year deadline had passed. I told her that I had submitted a request for an extension. She readily acknowledged having received it but that they had not accepted it.

I told her that I had not been informed of this position previously and asked her why? She told me that she had tried to call me twice this past fall and that I had not called her back. I pointed out that I never received a letter and that I believe it should have been a certified letter so that they could have assured that I had received this vital information. I also told her that I had stopped by my local agent's office around that same time and that he had assured me that it HAD been accepted. I asked her why my request for an extension was denied and she told me that it was because all requests for extensions need to be signed by the contractor and have an estimated starting date and finishing date. This was another bit of information that I was just being informed of.

This has been a debilitating, emotional roller coaster for me. I had a full blown panic attack after finding out that American Family was refusing to pay on my claim. I sobbed in my local American Family Insurance agent's office (much to my embarrassment). I told him that I have a disability which causes me to struggle with deadlines - communication - and that if his company is playing gotcha then people like me will always lose.

When I informed my roofing contractor about my phone call with American Family he was very sympathetic about it. He told me that American Family Insurance is the only one denying claims on such an arbitrary basis. He told me that he believes that I will eventually receive claim money but that it will take time and that he can not afford to pay his crew and would have to pull his guys off of my uncompleted roof unless I could assure payment.

I have received a cancellation notice on our homeowner's insurance because we filed 3 claims under our endorsement for sewer backup over the past 5 years (2008, 2012 and 2013) - an endorsement that we pay for. What is the purpose of offering your customers something that they pay extra for and then drop them for filing a claim under that endorsement?

We have been American Family Insurance customers for years. We currently have a shake shingle roof. After numerous hailstorms, of which all of our non-American Family Insurance neighbors received new roofs, ours STILL refused to replace. Now, we have decided to go ahead and pay for a new roof out of our own pocket. The catch is... we decided to go with the most top-of-the-line roof that our HOA would approve. It's rugged, tough, looks nice and is very expensive! Lo and behold, American Family Insurance says that it's so new, expensive and highly rated that they have yet to do "tests/research" on it. We can have the new roof installed, but until they do the research/testing on it, we will not receive a 24% discount (the most that they offer with their company).

So, we now have to wait it out until they can catch up to the roofing material market and find that this is the best product that is offered. We can have them insure our roof, but not received the discount. Coincidentally, the roof that they WILL give the discount on is a cheap looking shingle. Seriously? It's OBVIOUS that they need to get with the changing market and get this upgraded shingle that we want to use rated as a Class 4. Oh well. I'm now currently shopping all other insurance companies to see which one will offer us a discount for the triple laminate, Presidential Shake roof. Highly disappointed in American Family. After all, if we have to pay for our own new roof, we might as well switch to a company that pays their claims without a huge hassle and threat of lawsuits.

There are several large bare spots in the shingles on the east side of the house. My neighbor has similar issues, and his company, Nationwide, paid for a new roof. The American Family adjuster claimed that the roofer had installed defective shingles and would not pay a dime. I've been a customer for 25 years. During that time, I have made 1 or 2 small auto claims. I currently have life, home and auto with them, but not for much longer. What a terrible way to treat a long term customer.

American Family Insurance customers: be on the lookout for a 25% increase in your homeowners insurance premium rates. Just got the phone call today from my agent indicating that recent weather in the Midwest will impact my upcoming policy renewal. I have been an American Family customer for 18 years, but they will lose me after this rate increase. The big shove came when my agent attempted to push a $1000 deductible versus my current lower deductible - indicating that this level was the norm. Poor sales tactics in attempting to norm the $1000 deductible which will reduce the company's administrative costs. I see American Family being influenced by corporate greed on this premium increase. They reported a 22% increase in net income from 2011 to 2012, increasing from $29 million to over $360 million. Too bad they are losing a loyal customer by attempting to maintain the 2012 profit margin rates.

I have been an American Family Insurance customer for 25 years. Yes, 25 years! My husband went to high school with our old agent. So his first car, he insured with American Family. Then, we met and married and I insured my car with American Family. Five years later, we purchased a home and insured it with American Family Insurance. Twelve years later, we sold that home and purchased a new home which we have been in for 8 years. Two years ago, there was a hailstorm and caused major damage to our tile roof and many other items including our air conditioner. Up until now, we never had a claim.

American Family has still not paid our claim. We have been waiting and waiting. We finally had to put on a new air condition ourselves to the tune of $6500, which I'm sure we won't be reimbursed for. My husband has made all the repairs to the other damages to our property (replaced the roof on two sheds) which I'm sure they won't reimburse either. We have an attorney now who seems to be useless because it's two years later. Everyone else in my neighborhood has new roof except the American Family customers. So if you chose to go with American Family Insurance after reading this post, you deserve what you get. Sorry but that's the truth.

I am a homeowner. In July of 2012, we had two bad hailstorms come through my area with wind damage. I've had 5 contractors come out and state that I have damage. AmFam's adjuster was rude, went back and said it looked like we went up on the roof and damaged it or something. Mind you, there is a YouTube video of the hailstorm that hit this area and 90% of the houses around here have had their roofs and siding replaced. We asked for another adjuster to come out. The same one came out and stated to my contractor that he was glad we didn't get up there and cause more damage like he thought we would have. So he sent in a quote. AmFam changed it to meet our deductible so it would zero out. Then they gave us a letter stating too little damage and they are closing the claim.

I contacted them and said no, I want another adjuster out. They said, "We have to get another contractor (number 5) out that's neutral to the situation." So we did. Again, they said, "Yes, damage." AmFam's adjuster was supposed to come out and meet with our contractor. No one showed. Calls went unanswered at the claims department. When we did get a hold of them, they were rude. I finally found Ohio Bureau of Insurances that regulates the laws and regulations for insurance companies. It got to the point where I would have to email Adam in order for AmFam to return our calls or get off their butts to do anything. The last adjuster they gave didn't come out and looked at the pictures from the first (I took my own pictures and show a lot more damage than what they took back with them). He said it looked like someone got on the roof and caused the damage. They'll replace 10 shingles. Again, by the time deductible is applied, zero it out to nothing.

I went off. I was insulted. That's complete slander! My husband is disabled and I am not getting on the roof! Our contractor said our roof needs to be replaced, not repaired. Finally, I said I want to send it to arbitration, but they want my $1,000 deductible and $750 half of the arbitration. Well for $1,700 I'm sure I could have someone at least repair my roof. Why do I want AmFam to have any more of my money. I thought the arbitrator had to be agreed upon and not from what AmFam chooses? I'm off to cuss them out and tell them where they can stick it right after I get my house insured by my previous insurer. I only changed because AmFam was a little bit better deal.

Their customer service is terrible! They are rude to you. They talk about you. They, including the claims department, do not return your calls after the claim is opened and they will blame everything on you. This company is only out for profit. I hope enough people complain and get them to go under! I have pics that won't load on here (many!). BTW, where my overhang attaches to the roof (when the adjuster lifted the part of it back with his measuring tape), it has since leaked. I had to have my contractor put up a temporary patch.

American Family Insurance is a friendly company when you purchase your policy but wait and see how they treat you during the claim process. I recently filed a claim involving water damage to the master bathroom in my house. The damage was caused by a "cracked pipe" under my garden bathtub which is completely enclosed. The water damage created mold under the tub and on the baseboards and walls. The adjuster from Prescott, AZ and his boss from Phoenix, AZ said they would not cover the damage because it was not "fast and sudden". Whatever does that mean?

I have been a customer with them for over 15 years. I also have an auto policy and was rear-ended last year by an underinsured driver. American Family's adjuster tried to have the auto body shop repair the damage with "Bondo." The auto body shop advised the adjuster that the repair was unsafe and refused to comply. When I confronted the adjuster, he telephoned the repair shop and advised them that some conversations should remain between himself and them. This company will read every fine print in the policy to keep from paying on a claim. I even called my agent from Show Low, AZ who has yet to return my telephone call, over a week from this writing.

Please consider before purchasing a policy from this company, American Family Insurance. Do not believe their commercials on television. This is not a customer friendly company. Read all the complaints.

First, our policy has no time limit on full replacement. Second, several storms occurred at our home over the last year. They only paid us 20% of our claim hoping that we would accept this.

At first, they denied damage and then tried to say our roof only had minor damage, but their own engineer refuted them. Now this, they are also using similar tactics with our neighbor and some good friends. Our roofer and some lawyers we talked to tell me they are low balling their claims because most people don't want to go through the time and expense to sue them (including our friends and neighbors mentioned above). They wanted a whole three-tab shingle then. When they did send a check, it was made to mortgage company and took months to get signed to cash before I could start roof replacement. Also, they only sent half and didn’t include the permit or dumpster fees. Anyways, we decided to do an addition at same time and upgrade to steel roofing. We finished our part of the house on fall of 2009.

In summer of 2010, American Family wanted to increase home owner coverage by $100.00 for improvements after an inspection was done by them. The agent called and I refused to up my coverage as my wife stated to them we are not done with the addition or the garage roof and we ran out of money. I told this also to the agent in 2011. We finished the garage roof and submitted for the depreciation and American Family denied paying all of it due to it taking too long to complete the project that we had one year when we stated that we informed the American Family Inspection Department, and the agent they stated that there’s a large company and those are different departments. That doesn’t have noting to do with claims. They did send a check for depreciation on the house and told us we were lucky we even got that. They shorted us somewhere around $5,000.00.

On July 24, 2011, I had a sewer back in my basement apartment. I called American Family 24-hour call center to file a claim. After the 3rd day, the carpet in the unit began to smell, so I had it removed. I took pictures just to prove that it was there. Ten days had passed before a field adjuster called me to view my property for inspection. I showed him the carpet pictures and advised him that I had been spraying the walls with bleach to keep the mold down like the last field inspector had told me to do because I live in the unit and didn't have any money for temporary relocation. He commented that he could not smell any mold and would submit a request for payment to replace the carpet, the drywall in laundry room and painting, plus some money for carpet debris removal.

The field inspector took pictures of both exterior drains in front and rear doorways, too. After 2 weeks, I called American Family and was transferred to their catastrophe center for update. I was told the file was being reviewed and to check back in 2 weeks. Two weeks later, I called and was advised that the claim was denied because the inspector included in his summary: "Water in unit due to possible surface water" and that I should contact the field inspector directly. So I called the field inspector and requested a re-inspection because his report included no notes that I have 2 sewer drains directly in my unit. One drain is in the front half of the unit in my bedroom and the other drain in towards the rear in the laundry room behind my kitchen. He told me he didn't know about the drains. I advised him I had a previous claim for sewer backup from 07-2010 and was just closed out on Dec. 16, 2010. I thought the reason he didn't take a lot of measurements or have any question was because he had access to the previous claim and was only updating.

The field inspector told me he didn't need to come back to the property, just send him some pictures and he would include them in his report and with this information, he would modify his report and that I was sure I would have a check in a few days to start repairs. So I took pictures of the drain, but I also included pictures of various areas to prove that mold is growing behind the walls. So apparently, his nose is not as keen on smell as he thinks it is! I called again for status and was advised no change, claim was denied and the company feels the surface water came from under doorway. So then I requested a supervisor, his name is Pat.

I told Pat that I had a previous claim on 07-21-2010 for sewer back with no problems. So why is it this year, that claim is being denied with this surface water **? I asked Pat, please explain how your company is totally ignoring the fact that my apartment has 2 drains in it as if no sewer backup happened, but only that water ran from underneath the doorways? Pat said "Yes, it is feasible that if the drain in front of my home or rear were full, the drains in the house would be full too and a sewer backup would happen. However, you only have sewer backup, not flood coverage and surface water is not covered under your policy". My house is a 125-year old, 3 unit building. The drains are in the same now as when it was built. They were there last year and will be in the same place next year. On top of that, my home insurance in which includes a $10,000 sewer backup rider has gone from $2610 in 2009 to $4681 in 2010 and now, $5544 renewal as of 10-01-2011.

On March 14, 2011, I was looking online for homeowners insurance since our insurance has gone up $200.00. I did fill out this form online which sent them to several insurance companies. Jennifer called me right away. I gave her all the information from my insurance company that I have now, then she had said she gave me a quote 2 years ago, but would work something up and get back to me. She emailed me the information but emailed me two different quotes so I called her. The first quote came in at 1:39 pm at $581.00 with a $1000.00 deductible, or $566.00 with a $1500.00, then the second email at 1:59 pm at $799.00 with a $1000.00 deductible or $776.00 with a $1500.00 deductible, so I was confused that's why I called her at that point. Jennifer told me that the $566.00 was more or less a dummy quote, as she put it, and the actual quote was $799.00.

Then I asked her if my father-in-law was on my deed and loan or could've been on our insurance since they base it on credit. She said yes so I called my father-in-law to get the okay signal and gave Jennifer his information to see what kind of quote we could get. She checked and came back with an even better quote and emailed me that quote at 4:58 pm. It was $468.00 with a $1000.00 deductible or $459.00 with a $1500.00 deductible so I called her right back and told her that that would be great and we will go with that quote. Then she went on to tell me that she would have to get with her underwriter, then set a appointment to come out to take pictures of our home. I told her that that would not be a problem.

Jennifer called back within 10 minutes and told me that the underwriter would do the insurance if we would do a multi-car insurance with them. Because my father-in-law had put in a small claim almost 2 years ago (the first one ever), I had never told Jennifer before she called her underwriter. Anyway, I told her that if she could match or beat my auto insurance then it would not be a problem but I felt like I was being blackmailed into the homeowners insurance to save me almost $400.00. As it turned out, the auto insurance with American Family has doubled the price of what I have now.

I told Jennifer that we are not going to insure my father-in-laws home or cars, because it was our home that my father-in-law had the credit and that he has helped us out in our home the same way. She said he could also put a claim on our home too if he wanted too, since his name is on it. But the point being anyway you want to put it is it was a blackmail. They will cover our home if we get their multi-car insurance too is the way it was put.

American Family Insurance continues to have bad practices on policy cost. Today, after being with the company for over 30 years, since my home insurance is escrow with mortgage, mortgage company received notice underwriting canceled my home policy even though the home information is on my auto bill. Due to economical hardship, I was struggling in 2008-2009 and it hurt a few attributes that build the cost for home and auto rates (e.g. credit score, claim (over 5 years ago), one late payment (after being with American Family for 30 years)). So, I had to increase my deducible to make the payment, that was the solution.

Today, I find out no home insurance, which will be reported on my insurance record, making it hard to change insurance companies because that will affect my rate with the new insurance vendor. So there are three factors to unite as a group and prepare lawsuit against American Family: 1) Rate increase due to claims for policy holders over 5+ years of being customer of AF, 2) Using credit score for economic hardship issues with longterm policy holders and 3) Cancellation of policy without notifying via document or phone call to discuss solutions. And the list goes on.

I have contacted my State and US Senator and will start following their guidelines with insurance complaint within the State of Illinois.

Our roof is in need of a new roofing job. This is our second claim (the first one was a patch) now the roof is leaking in other places. I can not use the light in my kitchen because of the damage (water leaking over my table). When we made the claim, we said it was the roof, but Jon said he came out, took pictures of two places that he would have patched. Wrote a report and sent us a check. Case closed?

I called him last night and told him I had a waterfall over my table, one going down the small porch in front of the house and I needed him to call, leave a message and we will make sure we are home. He did not take the time to talk to us so we could show him all the damage. Now I want someone to check out the electric too. My home is falling apart because no one wants to look at the whole picture. I live in AZ, where it does not rain much, but when it does, I worry if the roof is going to hold up.

American Family Insurance has hired a 3rd party investigator to check on our rental properties. We had an AC company replacing an AC unit and the tenants looked out to see a strange man had entered their backyard via their gate. They asked him who he was. He said he represented us showing the tenant a paper with our name and address on it. The tenant knew better having spent the greater part of the last 48 hours discussing their non functioning AC and said funny, we would have mentioned it. They indicated they would go call us. The man was asked to leave. He got very rude with the tenants as he left indicating he got paid no matter what they did.

Basically this individual has fraudulently represented himself at the door of 4 of our rentals resulting in the police being called at least twice. He continues. The Arizona Department of Insurance isn't interested. Say they don't handle our complaint type. Call the police. The police refuse the tenants' request to make a police report.
