I have one of the Whirlpool Flamelock water heaters with the useless 9 year warranty. The pilot wouldn't stay lit so I called the gas company to make sure I had gas. He chuckled when he saw the unit and told me I had purchased it at Lowe's, right? He said he has been going all over the area with the same problem and not to expect any help from Lowe's. Also, I'd better be handy because Whirlpool only sends the parts, they won't pay to install them. So I called Whirlpool. After opting for the $18.00 free part, I called Lowe's. The Manager I spoke with has not heard of this problem with these water heaters but unfortunately, there is nothing he could do to help. Needless to say, I will not be buying Whirlpool products ever again nor will I buy an appliance from Lowe's. I would love to be part of a recall of these units if there is one!

It only takes looking at this website to read complaints about this water heater. Thermocoupler failure--yes, I had to pay shipping for a new part. I'm on my fifth day without hot water. If a recall was needed why was I not notified? I'm afraid I'm going to have to buy a new heater now after reading the complaints. I don't want this piece of junk. Granted it has been faithful for 3 years--then no hot water. The replacement part has additional parts my original didn't even have. MODEL # FG1F404053NOV SERIAL # 0424133216--and was purchased at Lowes (8/1/04).

I've been manual heating the water from cook top for last 5 days while trying to figure out why the part looks different than what I already had. There will be more to follow if the plumber is unable to resolve the matter.

My whirlpool electric hot water heater broke. I used the troubleshooting guide and determined the electronic control board to be faulty. I called Whirlpool and they will ship new one, and it will take 2 days. Lowes refuses to stock this part.

I will never buy an appliance that I can not get a part for ever again. And if Lowes and Whirlpool want to sell me stuff that I can not get fixed NOW, they lose my business. Looks like cold showers for the spouse and I for the next 2 days.

My 50 gal. Whirlpool Flame Lock started having problems with the pilot staying lit lately. The class action lawsuit settlement seems to be inadequate. I'm just learning of these issues, and now I don't even have the choice of opting out of the lawsuit. The settlement is ridiculous: a replacement part that won't work in the long run, customer pays shipping, and that's only after you manage to get hold of anybody at Whirlpool. I'm going out to purchase a Bradford White from a contractor friend of mine. I will take pictures of the installation, keep all my receipts, and hope someone else (like the Texas Attorney General) comes along in the future and takes Whirlpool to court. It's hard to imagine this is all the compensation people are going to get from having to deal with this poor product that should have been pulled from the market years ago. I see recent stories of people still buying them.

Economic consequences will be the cost of a replacement water heater. I do not believe Whirlpool's fix will hold up in the long term.

The thermocoupler on my water heater has gone out 3 times in 4 years. The company keeps telling me all they will do is replace the part. What good is this if the part keeps breaking?

Also how many families can be without hot water until their part arrives? The cost of a technician to install the part is over $100 a visit. The shipping is not free unless you choose the cheapest ground transport. There is no emergency option so if, as in my case, the heater malfunctions on a Saturday, the soonest the part will be shipped is on Monday, no matter which shipping option you choose. The service for this defective part has cost almost as much as the heater. Do I keep throwing money at this? I want a refund. Does California not have a Lemon Law for this?

We bought a Whirlpool hot water heater from Lowe's about 5 years ago and we have had to replace the thermal coupler at least 8 times. We are now going to just replace the water heater all together and we will not buy a Whirlpool. I have never had a problem with Whirlpool appliances in the past and we have bought many. However, this experience will make me think twice about buying another Whirlpool product. How can this company knowingly sell something that is defective. This has been an inconvenience because I have now been two days with no hot water and will have to go a couple of more days until I can get someone in the replace the water heater. I am not exactly old but I have arthritis and it is hard for me to have to carry large pots of water that I have had to heat on the stove to the bathroom so that I can take a hot bath.

Model number FG1H4040T3Nov SN: 0416126050 Unit was purchased at LOWES 5-16-04 with a 9 year warranty. The thermal couple does not work now and the tank is dripping and does not heat any water now. This part is known to fail and the replacement as well. This part is not replaceable at department stores but only by Whirlpool. There is a class action lawsuit referring to this and I would like to be on board. They will not ship the part overnight and have requested I put out $18.00 for a $15.00 part unit. They will ship it free but the delivery time with be a week or so which is not acceptable. This thermal couple is a backward fitting screw like a Propane fitting. This is why nobody carries them anymore as they are uncommon. The other reason is that this model has been updated now and replaced with newer models. There is no need for this part to be available now at a department stores because all models are equipped with a newer part, the old part is now obsolete. I feel they should stand behind their product and offer a full replacement unit. LOWES is fine with this when asked; as long as I have the AR number issued by Whirlpool. They do not have a problem replacing it. Whirlpool should replace this unit. If I have to settle for an obsolete part it should be overnighted for free. I feel they are not standing behind their product and I will not purchase again from them unless they make this right.

My wife and Ihave to take cold cold showers. I am expected to replace the unit myself or pay a plumber to do it for me without a reimbursement from Whirlpool and the part is known to fail again once replaced. All of these products have now been updated to a newer model now because of this.

I found out unknowingly about the class action lawsuit filed on Whirpool over their Flamelock water heaters. There is a sign posted in Lowes in Stow, Ohio about the left handed thread Thermal couples and the class action lawsuit and to contact Whirlpool for information. This is the second thermal couple I have had to replace in this water heater, and Whirlpool's quick fix stating to clean the vents and make sure the combustion chamber every six months is nonsense. I'll never buy another Whirpool product. I installed the flamelock water heater in Nov. '03 and is supposed to have a 6 year warranty.

I plan on replacing the water heater because of this and will be looking into legal action. All together I'll probably end up losing over $1000 due to loss of work and the replacement cost.

My husband went to Lowes and purchased a 40 gallon Whirlpool gas water heater. Since the purchase and installation we discovered the error of our purchase. The water heater lasted about 20 months. In June 2007 the burner went out and would not light so of course we went to Lowes to see about repair or replacement. Lowes told us that since we did not purchase the extended service plan we would have to go back to Whirlpool Product Service. We then found the Consumer Affairs .com article on these water heaters. The article was right!

After much trouble with getting a part shipped, and a plumber repair, we spent $149.77 to have the water heater repaired. In October 2007 the water heater thermocouple went out again. This time we just replaced the water heater with a RHEEM water heater at a cost of $668.00. The reason we are sending this letter is to let you know that your product stinks and that we will never purchase another Whirlpool Product or any appliance at Lowes. We also plan to give this letter as wide a distribution as we can determine is applicable.

    We spent $348.00 + $149.00 + $668.00 = $1165.00 for a water heater to get one that worked!

THEN the people at the store tell you that there's some lawsuit/recall against Whirlpool, and it's impossible to fix. I called the people that sold the water heater in the first place, and their reaction was: We know about that. We have no responsibility on this; call Whirlpool. Oh,and don't buy a GE, they are junk, too. Have a nice day. (Click)

There has to come a point when the normal consumer says I no longer am going to swallow Corporate America's abuse and stops enriching the suits that run such companies. Now that Whirlpool bought Maytag, I'm not buying any more Maytag stuff, either, if they keep the brand. Rather than Whirlpool wasting money buying up other companies, why not just make REALLY GOOD PRODUCTS of their own?

The economic damages are the cost of a new GE water heater, the cost of the thermocouples, and the expenditure of time, effort and frustration at trying to fix something that was built broken. Whirlpool KNEW about this problem all along. It should have been fixed immediately, no excuses.

Finally I turned it off for about an hour and then re-lit it without a problem. It ran fine for about 6 months. Then the problem reappeared. They knew the inherent problems with this particular model and Lowe's and Whirlpool sold it anyway. When I did call, I was directed to an operator that informed me of the defective part, that the part would be furnished at no cost to me, but that I would have to pay $18.00 for shipping.

What I don't understand is if they knew the appliance they were selling was defective, WHY WOULD THEY ALLOW LOWE'S (AND WHY WOULD LOWE'S) CONTINUE TO SELL IT? AND, WHY WOULDN'T THEY SHIP THE REPLACEMENT THERMOCOUPLES TO THE SELLING MERCHANTS SO CUSTOMERS WOULDN'T INCUR ANYMORE COST TO GO ALONG WITH THE HEARTACHE AND HEADACHE FOR NOT HAVING ANY HOT WATER?

I'm now without hot water in one water heater. With what I've gathered regarding this model and make, I'll be hard-pressed to find a replacement part that will last. I fear that the other water heater will have the same problem! I purchased the Whirlpool brand expecting quality, and now I'm thinking twice about purchasing anything with the Whirlpool name attached to it! This has caused a great deal of time and inconvenience; and may end up costing more money because the water heater parts are junk. What is being done to correct this? And is there any compensation for the lemon water heaters?

I spoke with someone there who said there is no recall. They said that because of the class action lawsuit, Lowe's sent them back! Funny thing is that the LP (propane) thermocouple is the same thing, just bent differently, but they are keeping those in the stores. For $18.00 shipping cost for next day air, Whirlpool is sending me a new manifold door assembly with a resettable thermal cut off switch. I went through three thermocouples and have gotten good at replacing those. Hopefully this won't be too bad to replace. Bad news is that if you own one of these, and there are a ton of these out there, you will be without warm water at least a couple days--*sigh*.

I purchased the Whirlpool Energy Smart electric heater Model #EE2H50RD045V from Lowes in November 2004. My old heater broke down the day before Thanksgiving when I had my entire family at my house from out of town. The unit cost $200 and I paid the plumber $125 to install it. In the summer of 2005, the water began going out quickly. After a 5-10 minute shower, I had no hot water. During the winter of 2005, the water was unpredictably warm or cool. The real nightmares started happening in September 2006.

The sensor began blinking non stop. It would blink once--for the reset message. I would reset it and it would still keep blinking. I lost hot water 3 times in September 2006 for 2-3 days at a time. Then in October 2006, I lost hot water every 3-4 days. The blinking then changed to two blinks--hot water temperature too hot. Ofcourse at that point, I had no hot water at all. I called the plumber yesterday who informed me that the Whirlpool Energy Smart is trash and that he strongly recommended I replace it.

He said previous customers who had the same product had numerous problems with the sensor/message box and they got replacement parts from Whirlpool that subsequently went bad after several months. He recommended the GE Smart Heater from Home Depot for $371. I called the 1-877 number this morning to report my problem. I was on hold for 15 minutes and no one ever came on the line. After reading all these complaints, I've decided to jump ship and not waste any time with replacing the sensor and just buy a new one. I'm utterly dissatisfied and amazed that I wasted $325 for a unit that lasted barely 2 years.

I thought that after 2 years and 8 months was good for a thermocouple until I started reading all the complaints that Whirlpool has had with the thermocouples. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I will make a suggestion that Whirlpool starts packing 10 extra thermocouples with their water heaters, or contack AO Smith and get a few pointers from them on how to perfect theirs. As for me, no more Whirlpools for me. I have a refregirator that I brought in Sept of 1969, that I am still using in the garage. Called Whirlpool and was informed that we needed to purchase a thermocouple at Lowes and that it was very easy to install ourselves. That was far from the truth. After about 2 hours of struggeling with the 19 step installation, it still would not light. Had to start from the beginning and then noticed that the pilot tube was cracked. I too have my share of repairs for these heaters but that's why I am in the business and all the prices you have paid are cheap. We charge $125.00 for heater repair.

Whirlpool is a good heater made by American Heaters. Every company has their problems. The US passed a bill that all heaters have to have a flame lock safety on it, I think in 2003. Every manufacturer has had problems with their own design, even the GE model from Home Depot has. I know this because we are the REP for them as well. American had the thermocoupler, GE had a gas valve problem which caused a gas leak, now what would you want -- no hot water or a gas leak?

I like the computer board on the electric heaters because it tells you what is wrong where any other company it doesn't. Whirlpool has changed the design of the burner chamber now and they use a normal righty tighty lefty loosee unit like all the others now and a simple push button reset on it compaired to Home depots fuse which if it goes off the entire tank needs to be replaced, I feel for all of you I myself make sure all my customers have hot water same or next day but no one or company is perfect if they were I would be out of a job

As with the many who complain of the Whirlpool FlameLock gas hot water tanks, I'd replaced two of their left-handed thermocouples before finally getting a way to reach somebody at AWHC. They were cooperative, but they don't have the parts I needed. In fact, they won't have the regulator, which appears to crimp the tip of every thermocouple, at three different towns for five to seven days.

The last thermocouple installed heated this 40 gallon cold water storage tank only once. Did I mention that this thing is less than one year old, and I have replaced a pressure relief valve and two thermocouples?

I've studied the regulator closely, and it has a braided wire inside that appears to misalign with the thermocouple's fitting, resulting in the soft copper tube and wire being pressed to one side, binding so as to cause the thermocouple to fail. The fella at AWHC suggested placing graphite on the tip prior to inserting it into the regulator, but that didn't help prevent this ridiculous condition from repeating.

My parents deserve better than this. So, I'll be buying them another new hot water tank first thing on Monday morning ... but, it won't be a FlameLock, or ever another Whirlpool. And, it won't come from Lowe's, either.

Purchased a Whirlpool 50 gallon "Flame Lock" water heater from Lowe's in 2002. In July 2004 the heater went out and plumber had to replace the "Thermo-couple" and Gas Control Valve. Now here it is April 2006 and heater has gone out again. Called Whirlpool this A.M. and after 30 minute wait finally talked to a service tech. Was told to go to Lowe's and get a new "Thermo-couple" which would solve the problem.

Got the new part, installed it (which was not easy) and still have the same problem. Have now been waiting on the telephone for over an hour, remaining on hold, and am now about to hang up with no answer to my problem. No hot water for 2 days and am faced with buying a new heater (NOT WHIRLPOOL)so we may wash dishes, bath etc. Will NEVER suggest to anyone that they buy a Whirlpool product.

I usually keep quiet about poor quality, but having 4 children this is an extremely inconvenient problem. Whirlpool has a nice looking water heater. It would be a much more useful appliance if you could count on it to actually turn cold water into hot water. I bought it new from Lowe's in August 2004 and have since gone through 3 thermocouples. These are their "handy" flame lock thermocouples. And thank you for making these $14.00 parts with a left handed thread.

I have worked in the HVAC business for many years and have never seen something as ridiculous as this. What an ingenious way to make these water heaters even more profitable for themselves. I'm the one who gets called by all of my family and friends when someone has a problem with their furnace, electric, water heater..... You can bet that I'll never purchase or recommend another Whirlpool product to anyone. I am familiar with changing parts such as this. But I truly feel sorry for anyone without the know-how to do this for themselves.

I know these poor folks are spending a lot more than the $14.00 that the part costs at Lowe's. Try adding in the price of a service call for a qualified plumber and paying a higher price for the part through the plumber. It wouldn't take too many failed thermocouples to exceed the original price of the water heater. I wish I were writing to praise Whirlpool for their fine workmanship or brave admission of a mistake they want to correct. But sadly this has not been the case. I was always told that you cannot learn from a mistake that you don't admit to making. Sound familiar?

We bought a hot water heater (gas). We havent had it a year and we already have to fix it. There have been a lot of complaints, with the thermocouple. I'm not very happy with this. I had to take off work to go buy the part, even though it's under warranty. If they send it to me, it will cost me $25.00 for shipping it.

I bought Whirlpool gas water heater on 4-27-2003 Model number FG1J4040T3NOV from Elk Grove Lowes store. On 3-3-2006. The pilot lit was off. When I reported the problem to the whirlpool rep, who told me that the thermocouple was gone. The rep gave me the lowes part # 86367. I purchased 2 thermocouples ($13.99 each) and save the second one for the future. It took me more than 3 hours on my time to purchase and replace the thermocouple. It is sad that Whirlpool does not own up to its design problems.

Talk about DeJa Vue. I've had the same experience with a Model: FG1H4040T3NV. Purchase in 11/02 from Loews, replace thermocouple 3 Months later because of Lint inside that was not cleaned out at installation and it's not their warranty problem because I didn't read the one paragraph in their Owners/install book to check for dirt in a new appliance.??? Replace it with a universal unit because Lowe’s 1: didn't have the part and 2: their store representative said factory parts didn't last anytime at all. Of course, Whirlpool gets a free ride because warranty parts are not used.

But Wait! IT GETS BETTER!! I sit here today with a shut down water heater and a hazard appliance report from our local gas provider. They came out to investigate an occasional smell of gas. Said the thermo coupler was leaking at the control valve and the valve was now stripped. The connection is in a near impossible position to get into. Call Whirlpool 800 automated (try to talk with a Human - right) get 5 local service shops who either denied ever being a water heater repair shop or in case of a National repair chain, not that brand. No Hot Water, nobody willing to accept responsibility for an obviously defective design, nobody with a heart beat @ Whirlpool to talk to, nobody willing to fix the thing, much less have the parts available. Having a great Day!

This is the 3rd issue with a relatively new appliance that sees minimal usage. If I find someone to fix it, at the least a $75.00- $100.00 service call will be added to what I can only imagine will be a ridiculous charge for a proprietary part. When it all said and done I'm no farther along than before. Reason we call the Gas Company today is that I'm home recovering from open Heart surgery. The numerous open wound sites REQUIRE daily showering to minimize infection.

I will join the chorus of complains over Whirlpool's poorly designed malfunctioning water heaters. 2 1/2 years ago, I bought a 50 gallon Flame lock from Lowe's and it crapped out on me this week. At the time it was installed, Lowe's failed to give me a instruction manual, so I missed the bit about cleaning it out every three months. When I went to install the new thermocouple, we could not remove the left screw that attached the airtight front plate. I drilled the screw out, and found the heater full of water and the burn plate rusted.

I called Whirlpool and the tech told me that this was perfectly normal!!! My plumber said that this was nonsense. Since it is under warrenty, I am going to try this heater one more time. However it will cost me as much to install it as the price of the orgiginal heater. I would not recommend Whirlpool heaters to anyone.

No hot water for a week, lots of lost work time.

Purchased Whirlpool Flame Lock 50-gallon water heater in 2004. About 8 months later we had a no hot water problem. Called plumber, they indicated a lot of problems with this heater, contact Whirlpool as it was still under warranty for parts. Took several days to receive part, but part was incomplete. Ended up going to Lowes and taking part off display model. Then a year later (11/20/05) same problem. Each time two trips by the plumber; one to diagnose and return trip once the part received, not to mention no hot water the entire time (3 to 5 days)

Inconvenient, costly repairs for a product that is a known lemon until the consumer replaces it at their own expense, not Whirlpool!

Called the company talked to a Chris he asked me a few questions, I answered, then he told me to get a new thermal couple at lowes and he would reimburse for the cost, our plumber put it in. Chris said nothing about this product having a recall or a bad part that we are continually going to have problems with, shame on whirlpool.

On June 14, 2004 we purchased a Whirlpool water heater from Lowes in Schererville, IN., within six months the thermal coupling went out. Lowes sent out a repairman at their expense. Now here it is again no hot water and this time no help. Lowes states that the heater is out of warrenty and Whirlpool tells us buy the part and they will pay for it but not a service call. They then tell us to go to their web site for directions on how to replace the coupling.

This would be fine if my husband did not just get out of a eight day stay in the hospital and it is not feisable for him to get down and repair the part. I am so sorry that we did not return to a AO Smith water heater. Our previous one lasted 15 years with no service calls. This is a shame that Whirlpool will not stand by its product.

The cost of a repairman is not conducive to our budget at this time, nor the fact that we have no hot water.

I wish I had seen this web site first. I see that other people have complained and now AI cna join the list.

On 10/03 purchased new Whirlpool Water Heater. On 5/04 Had to have service company come out because water heater was not working. Same month at a later date, the water heater had to be replaced. On 10/04 had to have service company come out because water heater did not work. 5/05 water heater is not working. Whirlpool stated that the replaced water heater guarantee is retroactive to the date the original water heater was purchased.

In all my life I have never had this many problems with a water heater. A water heater was purchased, installed, drained periodically, and it lasted 10-15 years. End of Story. Not this water heater. After you purchase this water heater, have it installed, the problems begin.

One problem that is soon discovered is that there is a screen on the bottom of he heater that has to be wiped off periodically, otherwise dirt and lint collects on the bottom and ultimately the thermocouple overheats and has to be replaced. My water heater is situtated in the utility room on the floor. The water heater is held up by three small legs and consequently stands only 1-1/2 inches above the floor. I have to lay flat on my stomach in order to dust the screen.

Had I been told that cleaning this filter was a maintenance requirement and where it was located, this purchased would never have taken place. The service personnel at Whirlpool are not only rude, but you have to argue your point in order to get any service satisfaction. I do not understand why Lowe's carrys this brand of product because what they carry also reflects on their name.
