I purchased a whirlpool energy smart residential electric water heater from Lowe's on 3/11/06. On 6/5/08 my water heater quit. The water heater has 9 yr warranty. When I called Lowe's on 6/6/08 I was told I had to call Whirlpool service assistant phone #. When I called this # I had to trouble shoot with the customer rep. and they said the problem was the electronic mod board(at least that is what it sounded like.

I had a hard time understanding the person, as he did not speak good english). The part is not stocked locally. I have to wait until 6/10/08 to get the part. I also found that the labor warranty on this water heater is only good for 1yr, so I will be responsible for the cost of replacing this part, if this is the right part.

I will be incovenienced for days with out any hot water and also the expense of paying someone to have the part replaced.

We purchased a Whirlpool Flame Lock water heater from Lowes in November 2007, and the pilot light stopped working May 29th 2008. We replaced the thermo couple and the problem still exists. I am disapointed to see that a company of Whirlpools caliber seems to be ignoring what appears to be an apparent design flaw, as evidenced by the number of reports on this product.

I am on my third day of cold showers, and my wife has had to drive 15 miles round trip each day to take a shower. Based on the complaints I've read, it appears there will be no simple and timely resolution other than replacing the water heater and writing off Whirlpool for future purchases.

My Flame Lock Gas Water Heater purchased from Lowe's went belly up for the last time on memorial day 2008. No hope of getting it fixed that day, but on Tuesday the plumber was on it. One half day later and there were no parts to be found, except on E-Bay, and I had to bid on those, with no guarantee they would work. With a family of five I had to give in and purchase a new unit, from a different manufacturer. The next day, Wednesday, stayed home from work, again, and installed the new unit. Total cost 775.00 for new unit with instolation and two days lost pay.

Two years ago, I purchased a Whirlpool hot water heater. On May 29, 2008, the hot water was non-existent. I called Roto Roter for assistance. It turns out that this particular model is involved in a class action lawsuit for a replacement thermocoupler and the part is unable to be purchased at Lowe's where the original hot water heater was purchased. This necessitated Roto Rooter installing a brand new hot water heater totaling $1,015.00

Purchased a Whirlpool water heater from Lowes in 2004 with a 12 year warrantee. I was luckier than most as my Thermocouple went out 3.5 years after install. Aside from the inconvenience of not having hot water for 5 days, it is amazing that this company has not taken action to mitigate the problem from a faulty product. Thermocouples go out.

okay I can live with that... but not being able to rectify the problem due to the fact that Whirlpool holds the replacement part hostage is ABSURD!!! This is the only water heater that has a special thread on the thermocouple that is not compatible whith any other replacement unit out there. Every hardware store carries replacement thermocouples that fit every other brand but Whirlpool and their proprietary design.

Fine... I can even live with that!!! But what is the point for not stocking Lowes with the Proprietary Thermocouple that would solve every customers problem. No one carries the part except for Whirlpool who will ship it to you for a fee greater than the cost of the part. To add insult to injury, Lowes carries a replacement Whirlpool Brand Thermocouple but there is a catch... It DOES NOT have the reverse thread design that our Whirlpool water heaters have.

I purchased a Whirlpool Flame Lock Gas water heater (model #FG1H5040T3NV) from Lowe's on 1/11/03. I started having problems with the water heater in March, 2008. The water heater flame went out and when re-lit, would go out again the next day or a few days later. I called Whirlpool's service department and was told to go on-line to Whirlpool's website to troubleshoot why the water heater would not stay lit, and the rep also said he would mail me a replacement thermocouple part. After removing the old thermocouple part, a service technician determined that the heater plate was rusted and full of water. I tld the technician, I had also heard water dripping inside the tank when it was re-lit.

When I called customer service again, I received a very rude representative that told me they only send parts, and that the rusted heater plate was a result of condensation since Whirlpool's water heater interiors are made of glass. She said she could only send the heater plate part. I suggested to the rep that if the heater plate was rusted and full of water--then replacing it with a new heater plate--granted it fixed the problem--would eventually end up like the one already installed in the water heater--rusted and full of water. I'm not mechanically inclined, however anyone with a little common sense would know the new part would end up looking like the old part in a matter of time, if the root cause of the problem was not fixed. I stated to the rep this same message and also stated that my warranty included what the manufacturer would do, which was: replace the inner tank, return of defective water heater, and component parts...The rep replied loudly we only replace parts and as I said the inner tanks are made of glass and that causes condensation. So what she was stating was that Whirlpool's water heaters are defective?

I ended the call with her; called the next day and talked to a different rep who sent me a heater plate. When I received the heater plate it looked used-- definitely not new. I paid for a water heater with a 12-year warranty. The water heater warranty entails replacing the inner tank and entire water heater if it is deemed defective. I call for service and am told I can only receive parts--they do not replace tanks. So the warranty wording is fraudulent? The warranty also directs consumers to call for a service technician in your area to access/determine issues/problems with the water heater; but the only thing Whirlpool's representatives tell you is we'll send you parts.

There's already one class action suite against Whirlpool(Bowen, et al v. Whirlpool Corp., et al), however this lawsuit requires you to acquire 3 service repair calls for thermocouple activation and then you are reimbursed $150 for the purchase of a new water heater. I'm paying for 3 service repair visits and only being reimbursed $150...that won't even pay for installation of a water heater, let alone the cost of 3 repairs and the water heater itself. Also, my issue is not with the thermocouple activations--it's with the inner tank..when the tank was re-lit, I heard dripping inside the tank, and there's evidence of water inside the tank by a rusted heater plate part full of water.

We have been without hot water since March, 2008. My teenage son told me he is not taking cold showers, why should he have to...I purchased a water heater and the store (Lowe's) provided an installer. With a 12-year warranty-if the product breaks within the 12 year period, it should be replaced when deemed defective as written in the warranty- and the issue has not been addressed--the problem is within the tank. My family has to go to other people's homes to take hot showers/baths. That takes gas; and the inconvenience of disturbing other people's households. I cannot afford to replace the tank at this time and pay for another installation. Why should I have too--I purchased a water heater tank and I already paid to have it installed. It's Whirlpools turn to make good on their product and honor the exact wording of the warranty.

Purchased a Whirlpool Flame Lock water heater from Lowe's in January 2007. The pilot lite started going out after about six weeks. Whirlpool shipped a new control module which I replaced, the problem returned after a couple of weeks. On separate occasions they dispatched a service technician to replace the pilot assembly, the gas control valve, and to install a special manufactured part called a pilot shield along with a second replacement of the pilot assembly.

The problem occurred again so they replaced the water heater total elapsed time about six months. The replacement water heater lasted about eight weeks before showing the same symptoms. The best that their customer support center can come up with is to disconnect and reconnect the control module. Interestingly at present the pilot seems to go not on a seven day cycle. My last water heater lasted 24 years with no problem. Wishing for the good old days.

I guess i'm another statistic/victim of Whirlpool's water heater pilot-light problem. I'll start off by saying that i've had the product a little over one year. When i wasn't getting hot water, my first reaction was to replace the thermal couple. I purchased one only to find out that the water heater required an odd ball, left-handed thread pattern, thermal couple! No business or independent plumber within 100 miles of me carried the product; which left me to contact whirlpool. They shipped me the new thermal couple along with the flame lock system converter. I only had to pay the $18 overnight shipment fee; however after i installed the new parts including the new thermal couple, i was back to square one! Square one being the pilot light would not stay lit.

So i went and purchased another new thermal couple, because i now had the right-left thread adaptor. While i had it apart i vacuumed the bottom of the water heater (as one post on here recommended doing). I then put in the newest thermal couple from Lowes, and finally got the water heater to fire up - pun intended. Almost instantly i heard the sound of water leaking onto a hot surface. Upon inspection through the peep square i could see droplets of water being splashed randomly throughout the heating compartment.

It has been a huge inconvience, from having to shower at other peoples houses, making phone call after phone call, and driving back and fourth to the hardware store for thermal couples. I would be more than happy to exchange it but i no longer have the receipt, although it should still be covered under the factory warantee. I hope this helps anyone who has struggled with this.

We purchased a house about three years ago with a Whirlpool water heater. The heater was purchased in 2004. The thermocouple has just died and we called Whirlpool to fix it under the warranty. Here are the scams that Whirlpool is pulling:

    1. Because we are new owners of the house, Whirlpool claims that the water heater is used and their warranty does not cover used appliances.

    2. Although the part is clearly defective - my plumber, and two gas company employees verify that they do about FIVE service calls A DAY on this faulty part - Whirlpool claims that the part is not defective.

    3. They charge the cost, shipping, and installation of the replacement part - called the Flame Lock Enhancement Kit. Nice little side business. An upstanding and honorable company would replace the heater or part free of charge - even the installation fee in order to retain customer satisfaction. Clearly, Whirlpool is not this kind of company. I am finished considering ever purchasing the Whirlpool brand again.

I am out $90 for the Kit, $40 for shipping, $50 for installation, and about five hours of personal time. At my client charge rate of $150/hr, I have burned $750 of business time on this.

Joining the chorus of complaints against Whirlpool water heaters and Lowe's. We haven't had hot water for a week and need to replace the water heater for $700. Same story: No pilot light. Pilot won't stay lit. THE WATER HEATER IS THREE MONTHS OLD! Called Lowe's. They blamed us (!), saying the thermocouple burned out b/c the water heater was on too high of a temp. That's total BS. Bought a thermocouple from Lowe's. It didn't work. I had a plumber come and he said the tank is faulty. Water is dripping down onto the pilot, which explains why it won't stay lit. It reeks of gas, too, b/c it's not working properly. Don't always believe them when they say the thermocouple is shot! It could be something bigger and un-fixable.

It's been a long and stressful week. We're planning to wheel in the old (new?) water heater into Lowe's this weekend and demand a full refund. I believe Lowe's is partly responsible for this and I'd love to see a class-action lawsuit against them, too. My advice is: Don't bother fixing these things. Get a new water heater (NOT Whirlpool) put in by a local plumber you trust and go after Lowe's for a refund. In the long run you'll save time, money, and stress.

I purchased the infamous 40 gallon Whirlpool water heater probably around two years ago and have found it to be sporadic of late. About 5 days ago I kept hearing a tzzz sound like a drop of water hitting an open flame. Further investigation revealed it to be coming from the water heater. I figured water drops were leaking on the pilot light.

Well, I promptly forgot about it and last night (5/5/08) we had a rude awakening... no hot water, no pilot light. After several attempts to relight it, we gave up. I'm not all that comfortable messing around with natural gas and flames either, thank you very much! Called a plumber this morning (5/6/08) and he had heard the song and dance before, he knew exactly what type of issue I had and told me what to do.

I called the number on the side, followed the prompts and spoke to a man who offered me many shipping options, I opted for the 2-day $8.00 option - I live in Ohio and it was being shipped from Tennessee, so I'm close. The plumber offered me approximately 1.5 hours at $70.00 an hour. Wouldn't Whirlpool send someone out to fix the problem for me? Oh yeah - I guess they'd have to employ a workforce the size of a small army to fix everyone in the U.S. who is experiencing the same problem. I'd sure like to have my plumber bill paid. I do not have my original receipt, but I'm guessing Lowe's could find me pretty easily as I have purchased about 3 things from them in my entire life.

This particular item was not fun to install in a small space, either. I don't think Whirlpool is practicing good customer service and should be held accountable for putting out such a shoddy piece of equipment. What happened to quality control?

I missed one-half of a day of work today and will need to get someone to sit at my house on Friday to wait for the plumber. No way to wash dishes, shower or properly clean my house, either. We're drinking from plastic cups at home and using plastic silverware. I feel sorry for those with families.

In January of 2008, my water heater gave out. That part was okay - afterall, I had lived there for over 13 years and never once had to even relight the pilot light. I got it relit -yeah me. Then it went out again and again and again.

I called whirlpool on Monday (they are closed on Sunday) and they told me to call a local plumbing company that had the service contract for Whirlpool in the area. They couldn't get to my house until Wednesday. He looked at it for 15 minutes and told me everything was fine. Charged me too, of course.

The pilot light went out Thursday, Friday and Saturday - only Saturday it wouldn't relight. I called the contracted plumber's emergency number four times, but they didn't answer any calls until Monday morning. I have been showering at my gym, work etc. Thank God that I don't have kids like some of the other poor souls on this website. Contacted Lowe's and hope they are open-minded about this. My question was how, when this is obviously a poor quality piece of equipment I was able to buy one off the shelf.

Have replaced the thermocoupler (left hand thread) now for the fourth time. They seem to last about 1 year. Found out Lowe's no longer carries them and was able to find the last one in town for $25. wondered why and found out through this site that there are a lot of problems with these water heaters from Whirlpool. Noticed on this last replacement that the flame reflector was also cracked about three quarters of the way around. There are a lot of mentions about a class action law suit. Purchased a whirlpool 30 gal. water heater in 2006. A little over a year later the pilot light kept going out. After 3 weeks of lighting and relighting it finally could no longer be lit. When I called the service number on the heater I waited a good 45 minutes for someone to answer my call. After being transfered again a woman told me that the thermocupl. had gone bad and that the conpany had tried a new kind of left coupl. and now they are not staying lit. She first sid that they get dirty easily and to check under the waterheater with a mirror to clean it. ( it was clean) She told me that they would send a conversion right coupl. that should fix the problem. (No one to install it; and extra $18.00 to send it so it would be there on Tues.)

It was Saturday when I called; we had already been without hot water since Thurs. night. The operator told me that the local stores also carry conversion kits free of charge so I had my husband go to lowes; home depot..etc. Noone carries these parts; they informed him that there was a civil suit against Whirlpool and that the right coupl. would fix the problem for only a few weeks to a couple of months. They said that we would keep needing to replace it or replace the coupl. and some other part in the heater that would cost 150.00 and there was no guarantee. I already have a 6 year guarantee on the heater and it is not working and Whirlpool is not fixing it and I have no hot water and now I'm expected to fix it myself; replace other parts to fix the part that will keep going bad and pay for it myself. After hearing that we could not obtain this conversion part from our local stores we purchased a new water heater and had hot water after 3 days! (and I'm ONLY out about $1,000 in the hole!) It's Monday now; I wonder when that parts to fix our year old water heater will arrive?

I have 3 children and no hot water.. We have been inconvienced in every way by this. We have bought 2 water heaters in 2 years and paid for supplies to fix our Whirlpool heater and now to put in our new hot water heater. My husband has spent numerous hours trying to fix; light; driving around to obtain parts; trouble shooting and then purchasing and putting in a new heater. We have spent at least a thousand dollars on 2 heaters; parts; gas; and lots more in time...not to mention we had to inconvenience everyone else to take showers and baths. You can't even do the dishes in freezing cold well water.

I have been reading all the reports from unsatisfied individuals who have purchased a flame lock hot water heater from Lowes. My experience has been quit different. I purchased my water heater in 04 to 05. It has been excellent until the 2nd week of April 08... I'm a truck driver so I really don't know when it died. I returned home to a cold shower and began to investigate the problem. Sure enough it was a blown thermocouple. I though to myself, no problem. I called up lowes to find out that that left hand threaded thermocouple was no longer in production. They didn't have a conversion kit either. After hanging up the phone with Lowes I called the # on the side of the hot water heater. It was a whirlpool representative that answered. I explained the situation. She asked for the model and serial. She said they would send the parts to fix it right out. She gave me an option to purchase overnight for $18. She in no way tried to force me as previous reviewers have led me to believe.

So I go to work for another week. When I come home there were a package from American Water Heater. Opened it and it was a semi complete assembly of the whole burner mechanism. I had to remove 2 screws from the old burner and the orifice from the old gas line. Put those old parts onto the new assembly and slide it in. They included an adapter that changed the left handed threads to the new right handed threads. The new assembly has a reset switch on the door in case it overheats. The reason so many people is having trouble with this heater is due to poor cleaning habits. These heater have a screen underneath that HAS to be cleaned. How often depends on your situation. For my water heater to go 3 years before dieing must mean the area my heater is in is not a dusty as others. I have not cleaned the screen since I had the heater. Basically that where the reset swith come in. Instead of the thermocouple's safely mechanism tripping and having to replace it, you now just press a reset switch on the from of the new door they send.

In closing, I don't understand all these people complaining about this. Most new products have problems and the manufacturers have to fix it. Thats why there is a warranty. I got no hassle, so questions, just all the parts I needed to fix my heater. I even called on a Saturday. They shipped the retrofit kit on Monday and it was at my door on Wednesday via DHL. Thanks for reading. And remember they put those service #'s on the side of the heaters for a reason. Just Call and they WILL take care of you without a hassle... Good luck to all.

He asked me if I ever had to push the little white button. He never explained what this button was for. When I said I didn't know what that was, he said I needed a new part that would be there Tuesday.

I said, So I won't have hot water for four days? He said very rudely, You'll just have to re-light it a couple of times. Well, I re-lit it three times that day, and the next day (today) it won't stay lit at all. He never apologized for the inconvenience. He was just annoyed. We didnt know what to do at first trying to figure out and even asking friends and finally after calling the 800 number, was adviced to buy the thermocouple part and pay the $18 shipping. And when it arrived, the plumber that installed it broke the Aluminum converter that came with the thermocouple. And so we had to reorder again.

When finally everything was repaired and all, it was like a TORTURE ordeal lasting 10 days without hot water. And you can just imagine the whole family that has to take a bath before and after work/school everyday would have to go through, and when you think of how each one of us had to heat water in cooking pots using the oven... wow, it's quite an ordeal.

It happened again about two months ago, but having gone through that first experience, it was half the inconvenience compared to the first one. BUT NOW, WE'RE AT IT AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME. When my wife was about to take a bath after work, my goodness, you wouldnt want to hear what she's shouting. I dont blame her for saying so.

Thermocouple device needed replacing. Whirlpool couldn't set the part. Lowes didn't have the part. Denver-area plumbers and parts stores don't carry this left-threaded device - was told by 2 parts places and several plumbing services - these devices are now involved in a class-action lawsuit.

Lowes replaced the entire water heater for us. What an experience! Spent over 4 hours going between Whirlpool, Lowes, plumbers and parts places! Buyers better BEWARE! Whirlpool tech actually argued with me for over 5 minutes on the phone that the thermocouple device was NOT the problem! Next person in the chain I spoke with at Whirlpool couldn't answer my very simple questions of Why did this part fail? I didn't want the part replaced if they couldn't explain why in the first place - couldn't see the point of replacing this if it was only going to fail again in the future - not much of a solution.

Whirlpool did offer to send the part 'free' but told me it would take 7-10 days to receive it - their water heater fails, but customers are supposed to go without service since no one else dares to carry parts for this and 3 plumbers were very warry about performing any service this appliance!

$40 plumber service call. 2 days with no hot water. 1 day missed from work. Elevated blood pressure. Increased stress level. Overall better experience than some I'm sure because Lowes manager took the initiative to 'fix' our problem, but what a completely unexpected and stressful experience trying to get hot water back up and running in our house!

I have a family & can't do without hot water for 5-7 days.

So, we went to Lowe's, which is over 80 MILES from where we live. They had the part at that time. Then last night, it went out AGAIN. We called Lowe's to make sure they had the part, went & got it, got it home & IT WAS RIGHT HANDED THREADS INSTEAD OF LEFT. WITH NO ADAPTER! Over a 160 MILE round trip for nothing. So I called Lowe's, who assured it was a universal part that any place should have. I called around to every place near here, & everyone only carried the right hand threaded ones, with no adapter.

Then I finally talked to a woman who told me EVERY manufacturer had switched to right handed threads, but they should carry an adapter to convert them. Why Lowe's didn't know about this, or just didn't tell me, I don't know. Then I called Whirpool & found out about the lawsuit on this model of water heater & the replacement part, which, as other people have said, I had to pay to have shipped, or wait a week for the free shipping. I was on the phone with a store manager for like 30 minutes & he NEVER mentioned the lawsuit. So, we just decided to replace a 4 year old water heater with a brand from a store THAT WILL STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT! We will NEVER buy another Whirpool product, or ANYTHING from Lowe's EVER again.

At some point (maybe just after a year of installation) the pilot started going off. It would refuse to stay on. Upon consultation with GE tech support using their toll free number I was told that the days of maintenance free days are over. The tech support mentioned some new government regulation that keeps them from making heaters the way they used to. He further mentioned that the area under the furnace needs to be kept super clean and needs to be cleaned on a weekly basis.

None of this worked, so I had my handyman replace the thermocouple kit at a cost of more than $100. This problem has re-appeared since yesterday. The pilot simply refuses to stay on. So, my immediate fix for the problem is to request my handyman to replace the thermocouple once more. This replacement including the previous replacement will cost me the purchase price of the entire unit ($322.73). This type of shoddy manufacturing from Whirlpool is quite astonishing. After looking at the long list of complaints of whirlpool water heaters on your site, I feel compelled to voice my disgust at Whirlpool for trying to make money of such a cheap product.

I have had to put up with days without hot water as I get my handyman to get the thermocouple replaced. I have almost broken my wrist and back off trying to re-light the pilot for as many as 10 times on a given day. I am on the verge of paying almost the cost of the entire unit in trying to replace the thermocouple in less than three years twice.

I am a plumber and I have replaced many thermocouples on many different makes of water heaters, although the Americian/Whirlpool water heaters do have a serious problem. There is supposed to be a kit that Americian is going to provide for a price. I have dealt with upgraded parts and truthfully the customer is just going to pour more money into the old water heater.

When purchasing the replacement, check to see how much it costs you per year (warranty period) and the replacement cost of the federal mandated thermocouple assembly (the cost ranges between $18 and $49, and now the Americian/Whirlpool kit can be up to $180). Think about it.

Pilot light was out and would not stay lit. Telephoned Whirlpool March 25th 2008 who asked for the serial number which we were not able to get to because the heater was wrapped with a blanket. Lowes invoice did not list the serial number of the unit therefore we had to telephone a plumber on March 26th 2008 to remove the blanket for us to get to the serial number our cost $65.00 .

The plumber could not get the pilot light to stay on, still without hot water. March 27th 2008 plumber returned and installed a new thermo couple and re lit the pilot light which would not stay on, our cost $95.00. Friday 28th of March 2008 since we have been without hot water since Monday March 24th and we are in our late 70s and early 80s and not finding the immediate help from Whirlpool we are having our well qualified plumber, Angel Inc. bring us a new water heater and have it installed tomorrow Friday 28th of March 2008.

Our failed heater purchased February 15th 2007 and installed February 21st 2007 certainly failed to comfortable serve our needs for this short of time we would certainly expect a prorated amount from February 21st 2007 to March 24th 2008 and our service calls to address the problems with this product. We are not in good health and with our age being without hot water for this length of time and not having an easy method for us in getting help from Whirlpool has made this a hardship in our lives. We retained and are holding the old thermo couple and will be retaining the removed gas water heater that we are having replaced.

My wife and I being late 70's and me in my early 80's without hot water because the equipment less than two years old failed to provide us with sanitary and health needs plus being on a fixed income thee out of pocket overall cost we have had to bare.

After 2 days without hot water, I found the whirlpool hot water heater (support) 800 number. I contacted them, they sent a new thermo couple and manifold door assembly. They made me pay the $18 dollars to 2-day ship the part (ridiculous). So now, by the time I get the part, we will have been without hot water for 6 days, AND MY WIFE IS 7 MONTHS PREGNANT! Then I paid $70 to have the part replaced. THE WATER HEATER STILL MALFUNCTIONED AFTER ALL THIS! I contacted whirlpool AGAIN, and they told me that the orifice nut was not installed. So I called the plumber back. He came back, replaced the part; and the WATER HEATER STILL DID NOT WORK. I contacted whirlpool AGAIN, and now they said that the entire gas valve needed replaced. I was to go purchase the valve, WITH MORE MONEY OUT OF MY POCKET--AND PAY FOR THE INSTALLATION.

My pregnant wife and I have been without water for 8 days now. I bought the part for $60 (for which it will take 4-6 weeks to be refunded by Whirlpool) and paid another $70 for the installation. I am $218 into the water heater and went 10 days without hot water. OUTRAGED! This does not include the cost of time invested and time I needed to take off work! The water heater is still acting strange. There is a sizzling drip from the tank whenever the burner is on.

At the very least, I expect Whirlpool to replace my water heater with the brand of MY CHOOSING! Anyone (and there are many of you) still seeking damages from Whirlpool regarding this issue--we need to work as a block. Starting last August my water heater was going out. Odd I thought but and new coupler seemed to be a quick easy fix and only lost one afternoon of hot water. Well about 2 more couplers later it was not something to be shrugged off. After going with out hot water for a few days and trying different things, I called the plumber. He walks in and takes one look at it and shakes his head. Says he knows what's wrong by just reading the name whirlpool.

I called Whirlpool, got the replacement assembly, so called free, paid the $18 overnight that was actually like 2 days. Plumber came out to install at my expense. That was in November of 2007. Guess what, I had to call the plumber again today. My pilot went out 3 times in the last week. Nothing more fun the finding that out mid shower while covered in soap! Was able to re-light it myself until today. after several tries gave up, called Mr. Plumber again. Shakes his head, says wasn't I just out here? Yep! We did get it to relight again, but he felt this time it was the gas valve that is part of that whole assembly thing they sent me just a few months back. Not only that, now it's doing that rotten egg smell, the plumber says its the anoide rod. I can remove it and the smell should go away. As far as the heater, if it goes out again. I don't know if I will bother calling whirlpool. It would be less hassle to buy a new heater all together... NOT a Whirlpool.

Lowe's told me that I had to contact Whirlpool and they would send a replacement. I then spent a day trying to contact Whirlpool and never got through. I hired a repair man to replace it ($150). The warranty covered the cost of the parts, but the cost of next day shipping was $20. The part I think costs about $35 if I were to pay for it. Once he fixed it, the thermocouple went bad again the next day. Whirlpool gave me the run around wanting me to call another repairman. I refused because Whirlpool is not paying for any repairs. I talked to them for hours just so they can find one reason not to pay anymore. I contacted them several times, with each time on hold for at least 30 min. Lastly, I called Lowe's, and the man told me, "If I were you, I would tell them that it is leaking, and they would have to replace the whole thing."

Long story short: I got a new tank. I had to get the same one so I don't have to cut pipes to fit another model. I paid another cost to replace $195. So total costs are $870. I would think when I buy a new water heater that I would get a new water heater, but I bought a lemon. Will never buy any Whirlpool item again. I hope the new one will last longer than one week. Furthermore, due to some pending legal action, they have pulled the parts from the shelves (columbus ohio at least). Plumber advised that I call Whirlpool back and request that they send the replacement part. Tuesday evening, 2/26/08, we discovered that the pilot light on our Whirlpool water heater, purchased 10/09/2007 from Lowe's, was not staying lit. I promptly called Lowe's number, 888.777LOWES and felt great comfort when I noticed their tag line below the number which read Call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for service or repairs. I was sure that calling at just a little after 6 pm would get service for us some time that evening. I've seen tons of the stories about Whirlpool on your site dating back to 2005. What is most aggravating to me is that I purchased this from Lowe's because, as a divorced mother of two small children of my own, I felt confident in their commercials and their written tag line; both lies. You cannot get service or repairs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. My family has done without hot water for 3 days and cannot get manufacturer service any sooner than Monday which will total 6 days without hot water.

I spoke to a Lowe's representative who took my information and then asked if I had the Lowe's extended warranty, which I did. She then informed me that the water heater was still within the manufacturer's warranty and that I needed to speak to them (Whirlpool). She said she couldn't guarantee that they would be open, but she would transfer me and also give me the number in case they were not open. She then transferred me and, of course, they were not open. I called at 8am, my time in Utah, and spoke to a rep who said I needed to call Sears for service in my area and gave me their number along with an authorization number. I called Sears immediately and was told that someone could come out no sooner than Thursday, the next day, and between 8 am and 5 pm. About 1:30 pm, the Sears technicians arrived, worked on the water heater for a bit of time and replaced a thermocouple. They said that the cover was allowing water to leak on the thermocouple causing it to short out. They called it a manufacturing flaw. When they left, the unit seemed to be working, but just a few hours later, the pilot light was out again. I immediately called Sears who now says they cannot schedule anyone to come out until Monday. I am not happy.

Two days of missed work to be available for a technician ($500); using shower at local gym for 9 people x 6 days at $20 per person ($1,120); plastic tableware ($25); unnecessary transportation expenses ($60); laundromat ($30).

Sometimes the pilot stays lit for days, sometimes for hours. I'm about to wear out the reset button and ignition switch. Their answer: not the thermocouple but overheating and throwing the kill switch; their reasoning: not vented properly. This is untrue.

We bought a Whirlpool water heater about 4 months ago from Lowe's. We paid $400.00 for it. We then paid another $250.00 to have someone install it. Now, the pilot light won't stay lit anymore. We researched and replaced the thermocouple, and it still will not stay lit. It is Sunday, and our only option is to pay $150.00 to the gas company to come out and look at our water heater. We took cold showers yesterday, and haven't showered yet today because of this water heater issue! The unit was 4 months old! I will never buy a Whirlpool again, as this apparently is a common problem with these units!

Currently, we are paying out of pocket $150.00 to have our heater looked at by the gas technician. We tried calling the Whirlpool help line, but they are closed on Sundays. We tried calling Lowe's, but they said we had to refer back to the manufacturer for service. Now, we are stuck paying for a repair on a 4 month old unit!

It takes 5 to 10 days to receive the part. Whirlpool's customer service seems it could care less if you have hot water. I refused to pay the extra shipping to send it faster. Now its been 2 days since the new parts were installed. And the pilot light is still going out and doesn't want to light. I guess we will have to buy a new one. But I feel Whirlpool should reimburse those who bought these JUNK water heaters. Thermo couplers are clearly not the only problems. I will never buy another Whirlpool product. And will be sure to inform everyone I encounter about my problems with Whirlpool.

They transfered me to Customer Service. Person could not communicate in English. Hung up and called again. Better luck this time. Was told the part would arrive in 5 to 6 days. Next day would cost $18. Didn't say what normal shipping would cost. There is no guarantee the new TC would last, but if not it was under warranty. They probably make their profits from shipping. Whirlpool is sending paper work to describe litigation pertaining to TC failure. No more Whirlpool products for me. Their waranty stinks. Parts are only available through Whirlpool. When I purchased my hot water heater from Lowes in 2002, I immediately starting having problems. First of all it's a 35 gallons hot water heater, and I could not take a shower without running out of hot water. I called Lowe's and they referred me to Whirpool and after several attempts of trying to get a hold of them and put on hold for over an hour at a time, I felt like I just got the runaround. I tried for 3 months for them to take responsibility for the water heater and finally I gave up. Within six months the thermo coupler went out, since then I have replaced it 5 times, I'm about to throw the water heater out the door, I don't know who I'm more mad at Lowes' for not taking responsibility for selling it or whirlpool for making such a piece of junk and treating their customers so badly.

Sedalia is 30 miles from me, and I have to make that trip just to pick up a thermo coupler. This is very inconvenient, time consuming and costly in time and gas, not to mention of not having hot water when you come home from work and not been able to take a hot shower.

We were able to relight the pilot each day until December 1st.

Lowes said I needed to contact Whirlpool directly because of the warranty. The rep said that he would mail out a new part, however it was my responsibility to get the part installed. On December 28th we FINALLY received a new thermostat from Whirlpool. Since the new thermostat was installed on January 2nd, the hot water heater has gone out all but 4 days. At first we thought the vent on the roof was allowing air to blow out the pilot but that was not it. Only until now have I seen that when the water heater shuts off that it kills the pilot as well.

The only consequence is that we have no running hot water unless someone sits by the water heater and turns it back on when it goes out so that everyone in our house can shower, which is 6 people. For sure the cost for a new water heater and the cost for installation will be a serious consequence as this heater is not even that old.

I purchased a Whirlpool gas water heater Model #BFG1H4040T3NOV from Lowes in mid-November of 2007 to replace a 6 year Reliance model that leaked after 9 years of use. On 17 Jan 2008, (approximately 60 days later) the pilot went out and would not relight. Replaced the thermocouple and same problem existed. I called the Whirlpool warranty # 1-877-817-6750 repeatedly and finally, after 5 disconnects from their end, got through. I was then put on hold for 20 minutes, at which point I was connected to the warranty center in what I think was India. The gentleman, I could barely comprehend, informed me that the replacement gas valve (thermostat) would be replaced under warranty but there would be a $25 shipping fee for next day delivery, which I grudgingly agreed to. The gas valve arrived 3 days later. Installed new gas valve and water heater is currently operating correctly.

In my opinion: 1. You can obtain and install replacement thermocouples from Whirlpool until the cows come home. This will not correct the problem!! If the thermocouple generates at least 14 millivolts while in the pilot flame, it is not defective. 2. There are some reliability issues with the gas valve (made in Mexico) specified for this water heater. 3. Whirlpool warranty department will gladly sell you $18 replacement thermocouples that will not correct the problem versus giving away gas valves under warranty that most likely will correct the problem.

My 50 gal. Whirlpool Flame Lock started having problems with the pilot staying lit lately. The class action lawsuit settlement seems to be inadequate. I'm just learning of these issues, and now I don't even have the choice of opting out of the lawsuit. The settlement is ridiculous: a replacement part that won't work in the long run, customer pays shipping, and that's only after you manage to get hold of anybody at Whirlpool. I'm going out to purchase a Bradford White from a contractor friend of mine. I will take pictures of the installation, keep all my receipts, and hope someone else (like the Texas Attorney General) comes along in the future and takes Whirlpool to court. It's hard to imagine this is all the compensation people are going to get from having to deal with this poor product that should have been pulled from the market years ago. I see recent stories of people still buying them.

Economic consequences will be the cost of a replacement water heater. I do not believe Whirlpool's fix will hold up in the long term.

The thermocoupler on my water heater has gone out 3 times in 4 years. The company keeps telling me all they will do is replace the part. What good is this if the part keeps breaking?

Also how many families can be without hot water until their part arrives? The cost of a technician to install the part is over $100 a visit. The shipping is not free unless you choose the cheapest ground transport. There is no emergency option so if, as in my case, the heater malfunctions on a Saturday, the soonest the part will be shipped is on Monday, no matter which shipping option you choose. The service for this defective part has cost almost as much as the heater. Do I keep throwing money at this? I want a refund. Does California not have a Lemon Law for this?

The thermal couple does not work now and the tank is dripping and does not heat any water now. This part is known to fail and the replacement as well. This part is not replaceable at department stores but only by Whirlpool. There is a class action lawsuit referring to this and I would like to be on board. They will not ship the part overnight and have requested I put out $18.00 for a $15.00 part unit. They will ship it free but the delivery time with be a week or so which is not acceptable. This thermal couple is a backward fitting screw like a Propane fitting. This is why nobody carries them anymore as they are uncommon. The other reason is that this model has been updated now and replaced with newer models. There is no need for this part to be available now at a department stores because all models are equipped with a newer part, the old part is now obsolete. I feel they should stand behind their product and offer a full replacement unit. LOWES is fine with this when asked; as long as I have the AR number issued by Whirlpool. They do not have a problem replacing it. Whirlpool should replace this unit. If I have to settle for an obsolete part it should be overnighted for free. I feel they are not standing behind their product and I will not purchase again from them unless they make this right.

My wife and Ihave to take cold cold showers. I am expected to replace the unit myself or pay a plumber to do it for me without a reimbursement from Whirlpool and the part is known to fail again once replaced. All of these products have now been updated to a newer model now because of this.

This is the second thermal couple I have had to replace in this water heater, and Whirlpool's quick fix stating to clean the vents and make sure the combustion chamber every six months is nonsense. My husband went to Lowes and purchased a 40 gallon Whirlpool gas water heater. Since the purchase and installation we discovered the error of our purchase. The water heater lasted about 20 months. In June 2007 the burner went out and would not light so of course we went to Lowes to see about repair or replacement. Lowes told us that since we did not purchase the extended service plan we would have to go back to Whirlpool Product Service. We then found the Consumer Affairs .com article on these water heaters. The article was right!

After much trouble with getting a part shipped, and a plumber repair, we spent $149.77 to have the water heater repaired. In October 2007 the water heater thermocouple went out again. This time we just replaced the water heater with a RHEEM water heater at a cost of $668.00. The reason we are sending this letter is to let you know that your product stinks and that we will never purchase another Whirlpool Product or any appliance at Lowes. We also plan to give this letter as wide a distribution as we can determine is applicable.

    We spent $348.00 + $149.00 + $668.00 = $1165.00 for a water heater to get one that worked!

Purchased a Whirlpool water heater and thermocouple is junk. It needs replacing every few months. I think they should do right and fix these water heaters free of charge.

Since 2004 I've replaced 3 thermocouplers at my expense. The last one made it 6 months. This time the nearest Lowes store that had any in stock was 1 1/2 hours away from my home.

I purchased & installed a Whirlpool water heater on 4/5/2003. It ran & operated fine until @18 months ago when it started making a knocking noise after someone used hot water. (washing clothes, washing dishes, taking a shower, etc.)When it is re-filling the tank the tank makes a knocking noise. It never made these noises before. Does anyone know what causes this and how to eliminate the knocking noises? The tank still heats water fine, it's just that the knocking noise is very aggravating.

suddenly no hot water, I purchased a new whirlpool hotwater heater from Lowe's about 2 years ago, it has a 6 year warranty, like everyone else, won't stay lit (thermocoupler malfuction).

After reading reviews of customer complaints, I will replace the coupler at my expense. I'm not even gonna bother with Whirlpool. But when I do replace it, it will be another brand, and anything with the name Whirlpool won't be in my house.

I bought a Whirlpool water heater about 3 years ago. Right from the start I noticed that the water was no where near as hot as the noname brand heater I had previously even at its maximum setting.

I have since replaced the thermo couple 5 times, at my cost, for various reasons (flame would not stay lit, the pilot would not stay lit etc.)

Guess what, the damn thing went south again. I have had it. If I ever buy another Whirlpool product again it will be too soon.

I purchased a whirlpool flame lock hot water heater. The thermocouple has been replaced 4 times. I paid for shipping of the new thermocouple 2 times not to mention days without hot water and the cost to have it installed. It just went out again and the customer service department is closed. I wonder how much it will cost me this time and how long I will be without hot water.

My hot water heater started leaking three months later and now the pilot won't light. So I guess that Thermo gadget is out.
