I purchased a Whirlpool Flame-Lock water heater (with a 9 year warranty) from Lowe's on Dec. 16, 2003. I woke up to no hot water on Wednesday, June 6, 2007. I attempted to re-light the pilot but that didn't work. I called 1-877-817-6750 and spoke to a gentlemen with a heavy accent. He knew *immediately* what the problem was and said he would send a new thermo-couple unit but I had to pay the freight which ended up being $24 for over-night delivery.

The weekend was approaching and I had to have the unit by Friday at the latest. The unit arrived on Thursday and I called Lowe's to see who I could get to install it. I'm a senior citizen and live alone. They referred me to the company that installed the water heater. They came out around noon today and took care of it but it cost me another $129 for labor. The so-called warranty is a joke and I want to be reimbursed for the cost of shipping the thermo couple and the cost of installation.

    Whirlpool Hot Water Woes!
I add my complaint to the hotwater woes. I bought a Whirlpool gas hot water heater January 2004. Two people in the house and frequently not enough hot water - doesn't make sense.
I have spent money on many plumber bills, cleaning, changing thermocouple (sp), etc. That doesn't include the time off work, hiring someone to be at home when the plumber comes, etc. I am annoyed with the re-lighting - I end up 'standing' on my head to see the flame or lack of flame, while relighting. I pray each time that I don't blow up the house.

I purchased a Whirlpool Gold water heater in 2002. I didn't have any trouble with it for 2 years, and then suddenly I have to replace thermocouples every 2 months or less. Installation of a replacement thermocouple is a hideous nightmare. My husband is an engineer and he had a very hard time with the non-standard left-handed threads, etc. I have had 2 sets of renters in the home where this water heater is. It is highly inconvenient for them AND us. Two families are being inconvenienced due to this terrible product that I trusted by the name.

We purchsaed a Whirpool water heater Model no. FG1J5040T3NOV, Serial no. 0239102539 from Lowes Hardware either in 2003 or 2004. I have personally replaced the thermocouple 4 times and the thermostat once. I can't afford to hire a repair person so I have done all the repairs myself. Well now it is out again and I was lugging pots of hot water to the tub so my son could take a bath.

I am sick of this water heater. I can't afford to buy a new one at this point. So, tomorrow I will again purchase another thermocouple and again open up my water heater and change it out. Hopefully, it won't take me as long this time, I should be an expert at it.

I purchased my Whirlpool 50 gallon Flame Lock gas hot water heater from Lowe's in April of 2002. My first thermocouple went out Jan 2003 and then again in Nov 2006. Luckily, I run my own business and was able to change both at my own expense as far as labor. However, on the second one, I give up trying to contact Whirlpool, after three days, on the 800 number they provide with no answer. I purchased a 30 gallon Flame-Lock water heater from Lowe's about a year and a half ago. On 2-11-07 it stopped working, so I called the gas company to come check it out. He told me it was the thermocouple and I needed to call a plumber. I called two plumbers infact, and they both gave me estimates for over $200, based on the fact that it was a special part and they would have to disassemble the bottom of the tank to replace the part. At that point I called the provided 800 number and after a long wait the service rep says the part only costs $12 at Lowe's and it just takes 15 minutes to replace. Now, my husband is an excellent mechanic who owns an auto repair business and it took him about an hour to replace this thing. I can't imagine someone not so mechanically inclined trying to replace this part. After the part was replaced the pilot light came on but it wouldn't stay on, so I called the number again and the woman told me I needed to take this thing apart again, and clean the vent with a toothbrush and vaccum it out every 3-6 months like I should have read in the manual. I was beyond frustrated at this point, but I went ahead and cleaned the vent (which was pointless, the toothbrush didn't even get dirty and there wass nothing to vaccum), AND THE PILOT STILL WOULD NOT STAY LIT! We have gone 11 days without hot water, I have to boil water to wash dishes, clothes, and take baths, I mean this is beyond inconvenient, this is cruel and unusual. It is now about 11:30pm, too late to call that number so I decided to get on the internet and look up Whirlpool Water Heater complaints, and to my dismay I have read all of the prior complaints about this defective product, and I am glad I did because I will not put another hard-earned dollar into this thing.

Was directed by Lowes to the Whirlpool 1-877 number (can you say useless) and it took over 3 hours to get a real person on the line. Was told that I need to clean a "trap" on the bottom and it should have been cleaned every 2 to 3 months. I was never told about this procedure when the unit was installed.

After speaking with the service person I took off time from work and went home to do what I was told to do and if at that point I most likely needed a thermocoupler and I could purchase at Lowes and install myself. I managed to get water heater to light. Whirlpool also told me there was an upgrade to the front panel and for $6.95 shipping and handling they would send it out. The very next day my father calls from home to tell me once again there is not hot water, he tries to re-light and the water heater catches fire.

I called my plumber and he tells me the best thing I could do was toss it out. Needless to say the water heater was toast and very lucky for me someone was home and could turn the gas off or I may have lost my home. Whirlpool has offered me no recourse with their warranty since I would not take another Whirlpool in replacement.

Whirlpool customer service has refused to do anything to help me remedy this situation. Our family is tired of losing hot water every three months.

We have incurred an $80.00 repair bill each time the thermocouple fails. I purchased the Whirlpool Energy Smart electric heater Model #EE2H50RD045V from Lowes in November 2004. My old heater broke down the day before Thanksgiving when I had my entire family at my house from out of town. The unit cost $200 and I paid the plumber $125 to install it. In the summer of 2005, the water began going out quickly. After a 5-10 minute shower, I had no hot water. During the winter of 2005, the water was unpredictably warm or cool. The real nightmares started happening in September 2006.

The sensor began blinking non stop. It would blink once--for the reset message. I would reset it and it would still keep blinking. I lost hot water 3 times in September 2006 for 2-3 days at a time. Then in October 2006, I lost hot water every 3-4 days. The blinking then changed to two blinks--hot water temperature too hot. Ofcourse at that point, I had no hot water at all. I called the plumber yesterday who informed me that the Whirlpool Energy Smart is trash and that he strongly recommended I replace it.

He said previous customers who had the same product had numerous problems with the sensor/message box and they got replacement parts from Whirlpool that subsequently went bad after several months. He recommended the GE Smart Heater from Home Depot for $371. I called the 1-877 number this morning to report my problem. I was on hold for 15 minutes and no one ever came on the line. After reading all these complaints, I've decided to jump ship and not waste any time with replacing the sensor and just buy a new one. After about 2 hours of struggeling with the 19 step installation, it still would not light. Had to start from the beginning and then noticed that the pilot tube was cracked. Now we are told that the part is not available nor is the replacement of the whole unit that includes the thrermocouple, manifold tube and pilot tube attatched to the manifold. Our only option now is to purchase and have installed a new water heater.

Every time I have to go to a customers house to fix the Whirlpool Flame Lock water heater I tell them they need to replace the heater with a better heater. The time and money these people are spending to fix these Whirlpool heaters, they could put in 2 or 3 new tanks of a better brand of heater. All the plumbers in my area ( 4 surrounding counties ) won't even touch these heaters because they will be held responsible when they go out in 4 or 5 months and most of them don't want that headache nor do I.

I too have my share of repairs for these heaters but that's why I am in the business and all the prices you have paid are cheap. We charge $125.00 for heater repair.

Whirlpool is a good heater made by American Heaters. Every company has their problems. The US passed a bill that all heaters have to have a flame lock safety on it, I think in 2003. Every manufacturer has had problems with their own design, even the GE model from Home Depot has. I know this because we are the REP for them as well. American had the thermocoupler, GE had a gas valve problem which caused a gas leak, now what would you want -- no hot water or a gas leak?

I like the computer board on the electric heaters because it tells you what is wrong where any other company it doesn't. Whirlpool has changed the design of the burner chamber now and they use a normal righty tighty lefty loosee unit like all the others now and a simple push button reset on it compaired to Home depots fuse which if it goes off the entire tank needs to be replaced, I feel for all of you I myself make sure all my customers have hot water same or next day but no one or company is perfect if they were I would be out of a job

Obviously they were not the solution to the problem. Then the whole water heater had to be replaced. Even though the water tank had a warranty, the cost of getting it replaced cost almost as much as the water heater itself.

I talked with a Customer Service representative on 8/22/06 to tell him of my frustration with Whirlpool. He offered no apology, but told me he registered the product number of my new water heater, so if it gives us problems, we will have the new date of installation as July 2006. As with the many who complain of the Whirlpool FlameLock gas hot water tanks, I'd replaced two of their left-handed thermocouples before finally getting a way to reach somebody at AWHC. They were cooperative, but they don't have the parts I needed. In fact, they won't have the regulator, which appears to crimp the tip of every thermocouple, at three different towns for five to seven days.

The last thermocouple installed heated this 40 gallon cold water storage tank only once. Did I mention that this thing is less than one year old, and I have replaced a pressure relief valve and two thermocouples?

I've studied the regulator closely, and it has a braided wire inside that appears to misalign with the thermocouple's fitting, resulting in the soft copper tube and wire being pressed to one side, binding so as to cause the thermocouple to fail. The fella at AWHC suggested placing graphite on the tip prior to inserting it into the regulator, but that didn't help prevent this ridiculous condition from repeating.

My parents deserve better than this. So, I'll be buying them another new hot water tank first thing on Monday morning ... but, it won't be a FlameLock, or ever another Whirlpool. And, it won't come from Lowe's, either.

I disregarded it because I was just thankful to have ANY hot water after having to replace my old one. I purchased model number FG1H4040T3NV. After reading all these other complaints on this site I see I am NOT alone in having this problem!

Today I awoke to no hot water. My pilot light was out and I tried in vain to start it. Finally I called the plumbing company that Lowe's had used to install my water heater in 2002 and he said it probably was my thermocoupling. He replaced it and waited around a few minutes to make sure it kept working. It did. He left and I went to the store. I was gone for 1 and 1/2 hours and when I returned my pilot light was out again! This is Memorial Day weekend and unless I want to pay double for a service call, I will have to wait 4 days to get it serviced! And after reading everyone else's complaint, I can tell it will be a waste of my money.

My options for good hygiene this LONG holiday weekend (of near 90 degree temperatures) is to boil water on my stove and sponge bathe or go to the YMCA! My water heater has a 9yr. warranty but what does that REALLY mean? I had one plumbing company tell me that water heaters are not being made to last more than 5 years anymore. She suggested I pay $900 for a German made product that has a lifetime warranty. Is that my only option in this land of plenty ?

These are their "handy" flame lock thermocouples. And thank you for making these $14.00 parts with a left handed thread.

I have worked in the HVAC business for many years and have never seen something as ridiculous as this. What an ingenious way to make these water heaters even more profitable for themselves. I'm the one who gets called by all of my family and friends when someone has a problem with their furnace, electric, water heater..... You can bet that I'll never purchase or recommend another Whirlpool product to anyone. I am familiar with changing parts such as this. I know these poor folks are spending a lot more than the $14.00 that the part costs at Lowe's. Try adding in the price of a service call for a qualified plumber and paying a higher price for the part through the plumber. Replace it with a universal unit because Lowe’s 1: didn't have the part and 2: their store representative said factory parts didn't last anytime at all. Of course, Whirlpool gets a free ride because warranty parts are not used.

But Wait! IT GETS BETTER!! I sit here today with a shut down water heater and a hazard appliance report from our local gas provider. They came out to investigate an occasional smell of gas. Said the thermo coupler was leaking at the control valve and the valve was now stripped. The connection is in a near impossible position to get into. Call Whirlpool 800 automated (try to talk with a Human - right) get 5 local service shops who either denied ever being a water heater repair shop or in case of a National repair chain, not that brand. No Hot Water, nobody willing to accept responsibility for an obviously defective design, nobody with a heart beat @ Whirlpool to talk to, nobody willing to fix the thing, much less have the parts available. Having a great Day!

This is the 3rd issue with a relatively new appliance that sees minimal usage. If I find someone to fix it, at the least a $75.00- $100.00 service call will be added to what I can only imagine will be a ridiculous charge for a proprietary part. Ended up going to Lowes and taking part off display model. Then a year later (11/20/05) same problem. Each time two trips by the plumber; one to diagnose and return trip once the part received, not to mention no hot water the entire time (3 to 5 days)

Inconvenient, costly repairs for a product that is a known lemon until the consumer replaces it at their own expense, not Whirlpool!

We bought our whirlpool water heater at lowes 2 years ago and the flames went out and we had no hot water for 2 days. Called the company talked to a Chris he asked me a few questions, I answered, then he told me to get a new thermal couple at lowes and he would reimburse for the cost, our plumber put it in. Chris said nothing about this product having a recall or a bad part that we are continually going to have problems with, shame on whirlpool.

On June 14, 2004 we purchased a Whirlpool water heater from Lowes in Schererville, IN., within six months the thermal coupling went out. Lowes sent out a repairman at their expense. Now here it is again no hot water and this time no help. Lowes states that the heater is out of warrenty and Whirlpool tells us buy the part and they will pay for it but not a service call. They then tell us to go to their web site for directions on how to replace the coupling.

This would be fine if my husband did not just get out of a eight day stay in the hospital and it is not feisable for him to get down and repair the part. I am so sorry that we did not return to a AO Smith water heater. Our previous one lasted 15 years with no service calls. This is a shame that Whirlpool will not stand by its product.

The cost of a repairman is not conducive to our budget at this time, nor the fact that we have no hot water.

On Sept. 20, 2002 we purchased our Whirlpool water heater. Thinking that Whirlpool was a great name brand that stood behind their name and quality, we purchased our first Whirlpool. Three years later I am thinking differently. We are now on our fourth thermocoupler and still no hot water. We are removing our hot water heater and purchasing another brand. I wish I had seen this web site first. I see that other people have complained and now AI cna join the list.

We have been with out hot water for three days now and out about $100.00 in parts. We have a new thermocoupler and a gas valve. Still no hot water.

On 10/03 purchased new Whirlpool Water Heater. On 5/04 Had to have service company come out because water heater was not working. Same month at a later date, the water heater had to be replaced. On 10/04 had to have service company come out because water heater did not work. 5/05 water heater is not working. Whirlpool stated that the replaced water heater guarantee is retroactive to the date the original water heater was purchased.

In all my life I have never had this many problems with a water heater. A water heater was purchased, installed, drained periodically, and it lasted 10-15 years. End of Story. Not this water heater. After you purchase this water heater, have it installed, the problems begin.

One problem that is soon discovered is that there is a screen on the bottom of he heater that has to be wiped off periodically, otherwise dirt and lint collects on the bottom and ultimately the thermocouple overheats and has to be replaced. My water heater is situtated in the utility room on the floor. The water heater is held up by three small legs and consequently stands only 1-1/2 inches above the floor. I have to lay flat on my stomach in order to dust the screen.

Had I been told that cleaning this filter was a maintenance requirement and where it was located, this purchased would never have taken place. The service personnel at Whirlpool are not only rude, but you have to argue your point in order to get any service satisfaction. I do not understand why Lowe's carrys this brand of product because what they carry also reflects on their name.
