I purchased a Whirlpool Gold from ABC Warehouse in Flint, MI, for $2099.00 before tax and it was delivered on 10/22/2010. Head-liner of inside of refrigerator has a crack about 3-3 1/4 inches long and the refrigerator is running more often. A repair tech came today, 10/14/2011, and did his job fine. He called Whirlpool and they stated to fix it with epoxy? The repair tech is ordering this.
I called Whirlpool at 9:00 am right after the tech left at 1-800-253-1301 and spoke to Sherry. I explained everything to her in a very nice manner and she stated that according to the manual, they give us it is for repair only? I said, ok, could I please speak to her Supervisor and she said yes but it will be the same answer. I spoke to her supervisor, Lisa at 9:15 am, she came on talking about the problem and let me talk, I asked her on several occasions are you still there, and she said yes, her words were that Whirlpool only repairs nothing else for the year as per my paperwork (record). I said we don't even get this till after we purchase the item, I mentioned I had a Cabrio Washer and it was junk and had more service calls than any other machine I owned.
I have a stove as well from Whirlpool it’s been good so far, I told her with service like this, and them knowing their liners are made of cost cutting saving materials as I have read enough complaints about this on the internet, that Whirlpool is eventually going under and so are the other small shops that do part work for them and their jobs will be outsourced to Japan, China, India and so on, I asked if there was another person higher up than her I could speak to and she said "no, they’re not available at this time" I snickered and said that's management for you. They have a customer service rep (call center complaints which is Sherry), then supervisor like you (Lisa) then some other management that don't want to talk to you. Way to go Whirlpool.
I told her to document that I will never buy another Whirlpool appliance and I will definitely tell others and so on, and if we get enough folks to ban them they will leave USA or close and then Sherry and Lisa will be unemployed just like the rest of us in the good ole USA. Poor appliances for folks that can barely afford to make it and if you’re lucky and working like me and you buy something; shouldn't a refrigerator last more than this, and you stand behind your products?
I also told her I know some are abused but this was not an abused product from me. It is a Whirlpool ‘cut your cost savings product’, and forgets the customer. Please look at the old appliances, I also mentioned I have an old Amana in my garage that is 17 years old runs great and never had a problem. And I gave her up for this piece of junk Whirlpool. I then told her I will write letters, emails and everything I can think of to ban this make and product. Model number of this refrigerator is GI7FVCXWBO, freezer on the bottom, fridge on top, side by side doors, solid black with ice maker.
When I purchased this I bought it to last a long time as I had to finance it, and take from our monthly income. I had never had a nice fridge, but heck this is not nice. It’s a joke and the sad part is, I owe over $900.00 still and just got laid off. Thanks to the good ole USA and Michigan, but I will pay it off no matter what cause I pay my bills, and stand behind my name as a good person and citizen unlike Whirlpool.
Boycott their products as they don't care about us or the American workforce. Oh, and this damage was not caused by abuse to the fridge - it was poor quality of materials in their products.
Thank you for letting us complain about products! Also, it’s not like I can go out and buy another refrigerator as it took me over 18 years to get this one. Thanks WHIRPOOL for letting me down on another bad product but it will never happen again. I've definitely learned and will teach others. It's just not fair that these big manufacturers can get away doing this to the poor people, maybe it's like they say; corporate greed?

We bought 2 Whirlpool refrigerators for our new home 5 years ago. The first ice maker died 2 years ago at 3 years old. The second has now died this month. We called the repairman in who told us that Whirlpool knew there was a problem with their ice makers, but because they did not cause fires, they were not recalled. We paid $480 later for items that should last at least 10 years, not 3-5 years.
We will never purchase another Whirlpool appliance and neither will any our family. A company with this level of ethical behavior that knows they have a faulty piece of equipment and just chooses to do nothing does not warrant my business.

I bought a new Whirlpool French Door bottom-freezer refrigerator at Lowe's in September 2010. I started seeing ice form in the bottom of the freezer compartment in July 2011. I cleaned it out, thought maybe the door had not sealed good. In a few weeks, it had formed again. I checked for leaks at ice maker. I noticed a condensate was also freezing on the back wall.
I called Whirlpool in October 2011 to see what could be done, since the problem began before warranty had expired. (The warranty expired in September.) I was told by 3 different Whirlpool reps that they would not cover any of the costs of repair, but they suspected it was the auto defrost system and they would be glad to line up a repair person.
Most of my appliances over the last twenty years have been Whirlpool, and I have had good service out of them other than a microwave that had a recall and that Whirlpool repaired. I was shocked that Whirlpool would not back up their product any better than this, especially since it is one of their higher-end models. I'm not sure why Whirlpool has a customer service (or disservice) line to call.
They were very uninterested in helping me. I can call my own repair person. I was insulted by the manner that the helpline personnel spoke to me. My experience has convinced me to try a different brand other than Whirlpool for all my future purchases.

I purchased a Whirlpool Refrigerator with French Doors, Model No. GX5SHDXVD03. Within 1 year and 4 months, I had to replace the defrost control board. I spoke to Whirlpool's customer service, George ** said he was sorry for my inconvenience but that he refuses to help in any way because I missed the warranty period by 4 months. I spent $352.74 for the parts and labor and lost hundreds more in food. Do not purchase any Whirlpool products. I was told that the boards have been going out frequently.

I purchased a Gold Star Whirlpool Refrigerator from Sears which was installed on July 1, 2010. The freezer was icing up along seams, so sealant was used. However, now I noticed after 14 months that the interior refrigerator's lining is fracturing throughout the sides and bottom of the refrigerator. Not at seams but all over fractures, spanning 10" to 3" to 2" on the bottom and side of the interior lining of the refrigerator.
Sears' answer is more sealant, and Whirlpool does not take any responsibility in designing a defective liner since it is pass the one year time frame. This causes your refrigerator to be on more often, because of the cracks. Unfortunately, the consumer loses out. Both representatives were nasty and when I asked for a supervisor from Whirlpool, an incident report was written, however I will not ever be able to get a copy of it. It will be considered an internal document. It is a great setup between Whirlpool and Sears having defective appliances made to last a year, and Sears to win with warranty agreements for the life of your appliance of $250, for one year coverage. When you buy the warranty and have a lemon, Sears doesn't replace it, My suggestion to consumers is to buy a tube of sealant.

My mom got me and my children a new fridge side-by-side ice maker. We were hoping that since it was new, we would have it for a while, but 1 year and 1 month later, it is not making ice and changes temp for no reason. My fridge will, most of the time, keep cold; but then, there are those days that it doesn't.
No one touched the temp, and since it's been more than a year, I'm stuck. How wonderful to spend all that money for a year and one month! We don't have a working ice maker, and also, I can't keep food good. I can't afford to throw food away. And my mom and I can't afford to get another one.

I purchased their washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, oven, and dishwasher. All were brand new when my home was built in 2006. Whirpool is the absolute worst home appliance company in both customer service and product. I would save my money and purchase any product other than a Whirlpool or Maytag. All of my appliances are a little over 5 years old and all have had multiple problems. Corporate takes the attitude of "oh well", pay for the multiple repairs or buy new after 5 years or less. I've never heard of "disposable" appliances, but Whirlpool has a full line of them! I would rate them less than 1 and just plain **!

The relay switch went out on our our side-by-side that got so hot the tech was very surprised it did not cause a fire. Because of the over heating of the relay switch, it burned out our compressor. This is not a recall part but they knew there were problems with it and for some reason they have a 'lottery' as far as who gets this part covered under a warranty. If we don't get this 'lottery' green sticker we not only have to pay for this part but also the compressor that it burned up. Oh, goodie $500+! Thanks for nothing.

I purchased a side by side Whirlpool refrigerator in December 2009. In one year’s time, all of the plastic shelving has completely broken. The repair man said that he felt like the plastic was substandard and to call Whirlpool but they said that we must have abused the shelving.
I and my husband are senior citizens and the only ones using this refrigerator. How can all the plastic components break within one year? I had my last refrigerator for over 10 years and I gave it to my son. It is still running and all the plastic shelving is still intact.
I feel Whirlpool should fix this problem but they do not care about their customers. Once they have your money, you are forgotten. In the end, they will be forgotten because I advise everyone I know not to buy from Whirlpool.

I did not have the money to pay for repairs and I am sure that the repairman would have never found the problem.
Two days ago, there was an electrical smell in the house. After an hour or two, it started getting stronger and stronger so my husband looked at the fridge. There was smoke pouring at the back of it so he pulled it away from the wall and we unplugged it. Surprisingly, the plug was not hot. Had I not been home, it could have caught fire, burned the house down and killed my dog! I am furious about this. When I called, Whirlpool says, "That model is not under a recall. Would you like me to transfer you to service for repair?" Really? Those big corporations don't care!
There needs to be a recall on this because I have seen this same problem many times on blogs and forums. Well, guess what, I used to be a Whirlpool fan, not anymore! Now, I went and purchased a new refrigerator, and the brand name is Samsung! I recently bought a Samsung front loading washer and dryer and they are great. Whirlpool and their extended warranty is a ripoff! I bought a Whirlpool refrigerator not even two years ago. It has stopped working 4 or 5 times, causing us to lose all our food. When it is working, it makes an awful noise. I have renewed my contract with A&E due to the fact that the frig is a lemon; which A&E is a joke as well.
I contacted them 2 weeks ago about the frig not working again. They stated they could not come until Sept 18th, a month later. Come on. Really. They are a ripoff as well as Whirlpool appliances. False advertising is against the law. I also contacted the merchant where the frig was purchased in Hazlehurst GA, who does not care one way or the other. If whirlpool was as great as they seem to think their appliances are, they would replace this lemon in my kitchen. We are elderly and are not able to keep dealing with this issue. I would never ever recommend a Whirlpool appliance to anyone. As a matter of fact, I will tell everyone I know not to purchase one; due to the way your company has treated me and my wife.

The refrigerator caught fire today and there was smoke everywhere. Had I not been home, damage would have been out of control. I traced the smoke to the bottom of the refrigerator. I pulled the unit out from the wall and unplugged the power to the unit. My unit is out of warranty and past the extended Lowes warranty. The repair diagnosis is $100 to start.
Whirlpool has recalled its other brands (Maytag, etc.) for this same problem but not its Whirlpool brand. Our problem is the same problem with hundreds of other people: Whirlpool fridges burning, smoking, and being a life threatening hazard to families all over America because of the faulty relay to compressor. Whirlpool better recall this model. They need to fix this or they will have much bigger issues to deal with (corporate manslaughter from a known issue and no action or protection for its consumers). The refrigerator is a result of Whirlpool’s negligence; thus, it’s potentially deadly.

I bought a Whirlpool model GI7FVCXWY00 over and under refrigerator directly from Whirlpool through DirectBuy on April 19, 2010. The unit was a relatively high-end model (over $2,000) that came with a 12-month warranty. Thirteen months after purchase and 1 month after warranty expiration, the ice maker stopped working flooding the kitchen in the process. We called Whirlpool who recommended one of their authorized maintenance subcontractors (GuinCo) to appraise the problem.
GuinCo came out, diagnosed that a valve in the ice maker had gone bad and the repair cost us $364. We chalked that up to Murphy's Law (repair needed immediately after warranty expiration). Not 4 months later, the kitchen comes up flooded again and again and the ice makers not working. We call GuinCo, the repairman come out and said this time that it's a heater and ice maker defect which will cost $643 to repair. He also said that the unit has been designated as having a "design defect".
We held off on the repair until we could contact Whirlpool for some remediation since it has become obvious that the unit is a lemon. I called Whirlpool, laid out the problems, timelines and potential cost (ice maker failures are going to cost us almost half of what the entire refrigerator cost before the unit is a year and a half old) and the only response they had netted out to was: "Sorry, you should have had extended warranty". This is a prime example of an American manufacturer, marketing an inferior product and offering the customer nothing when the lack of quality becomes obvious. I will recommend to anyone I know to stay as far away from Whirlpool products as long as I live.

I have a refrigerator that was part of a recall. Now it will not be honored because it is already one year over the warranty period (it had a five-year warranty for parts). I only learned that my fridge was part of a recall after I searched for a Maytag repair shop; the recall page came across my screen, and I found out that everything matched with my fridge.
I often smelled smoke. The fridge’s freezer side door and outside of the fridge was always hot to the touch. It melted a hole in the freezer side door. I called the service center, and they told me that my fridge wasn't part of the recall. I gave the service center my front pair of letters, then they sent out a service truck, A&E Repair Services. They came out; looked at the problem, and told me that the compressor and evaporator would cost me $818.93 dollars, and “oh, by the way, there's a $75.00 service fee for coming out.” I explained to the A&E serviceman that Whirlpool was covering all the problems covered under the recall, even the trip fee. I was told to wait, as he called the home office. They explained to him over the phone that Whirlpool was picking up the tab, and he got off the phone.
He explained to me that he could order the compressor and evaporator, and asked me to give A&E Repair Center a call when the parts arrive, but he also said it wouldn’t do any good to fix it because of the hole that was made by the compressor. He said he would try to push for another refrigerator. As he tried to write it in on his laptop, he sudden had to go to his truck to get a signal. When he came back, he had good news and bad news. Whirlpool was picking up the trip fee of $75.00 dollars. The bad news was they now can't fix the fridge because the warranty is over a year older than five years, but this fridge is under a recall. He said, “I’m sorry”, and left.
I called Whirlpool; now they are singing a different tune. Also, I've been without a fridge for about two weeks because A&E has back up, and I take whatever days they would offer. It has gotten too expensive to eat out every day especially I have nine family members. I have a cooler. I would go to the ice house every morning and buy 22lbs bags of ice; to keep my food cold and my insulin in, but it is costing me more money.

We purchased all Whirlpool appliances for our new house in September 2010. After the fridge was installed, we called Whirlpool because it took at least 5 or 6 days for it to cool down to temperature and we were hearing the motor running non-stop. The representative explained to my husband that this was normal. Our fridge has not been running properly from day one and now it's not maintaining temperature at all.
We contacted Whirlpool several times regarding the same issue over the past month. The 1st service repair company was A&E. That representative said we needed a new defrost heater unit because the air from the freezer was almost completely blocked going into the fridge and that's why it was not maintaining temperature. He said this fridge has not been running properly from the start also. He said he would rush the part to our house and for us to call to setup service as soon as we received the part.
After receiving the part, we called for an appointment and the first day available was a week after. We said we cannot go one week without a fridge, little did we know at the time that this issue would still be ongoing almost a month later. We contacted Whirlpool, they had another company, Snyders, to come out 4 days later. When the representative arrived he was told he was installing a compressor, not a defrost heater. He looked at the fridge and said the defrost heater was not necessary and the fridge was fine. I explained to that representative that sometimes it would maintain proper temperature and other times it would not, so it was not fine. I told him he needed to look into it further.
The representative from Snyders contacted Whirpool technicians and from their conversation they said they would try replacing a circuit board and they will rewire a heater unit. Once again, we had to wait for the part to be ordered. After another week of waiting, the part was in and Snyders came back to service it. The representative stated there was no sure way to tell if this would resolve the issue or not. We were hopeful, unfortunately, it did nothing to resolve the problem and now for the past 3 days the fridge is 48-52 all the time with no cold air blowing out at all. Since the ice maker is in the fridge, there is no ice being made and basically water sits in the ice bin.
I contacted Whirlpool again and explained we have had 2 companies here, each with conflicting opinions on what the issue is with neither of them resolving it even after speaking to the Whirlpool technicians. They setup for Bill's appliance to look at it. When I contacted that company they could not come to look at it for several days. At that point, this was becoming unacceptable. I spoke to Kristie at Whirlpool Michigan office and explained that we have been more than patient by going back and forth with attempting to repair the fridge but at this point, we want the fridge replaced. I was told that at least 3 different repair companies have to come to our house to look at it before they will even consider replacing it. I asked for a supervisor & spoke to Sherri. I explained the whole situation to her again.
I explained that every time a company comes and pulls out the fridge, even with cardboard being spread to protect the floor, it is still scratching my hardwood floors. Also, my food is going bad over and over with the temperature fluctuating and I have no way of knowing if it will maintain or not. I explained I have a 3 week old baby that, above all else in the fridge, I need to know that her bottles are properly cooled so that I am not feeding my newborn contaminated formula or breastmilk. I received no empathy or real concern for my situation. She just repeated I'm sorry you feel that way, as if reading from a script. I said I feel that I am not getting any customer service when the only resolution I am given is to pawn the problem off on a local service company to look at it.
I asked how many times this would go on before they would replace it. She had no answer other than 'Whirlpool will determine if it is unrepairable'. They are guessing at parts to order, wasting time and money and still not resolving the issue. It was model G17FVCXWY02 with serial number K02777346. I bought it from Sears.
The resolution I am seeking is to have a properly working fridge. The appliance is not even a year old and has not been working properly from the start. I want a new fridge in proper working order asap. I have been living without a working fridge for a month with no concern or reasonable options given from Whirlpool. I do not feel I should re-work my schedule to be home for service technicians to look at it over and over. I have to make several calls to Whirlpool and the other service companies day after day. It is a waste of time and effort for everyone involved. I expect when I bought this Whirlpool appliance and have an issue that I will be treated with care and concern and that the issue will be resolved quickly and effectively. None of this has happened.
I advised the supervisor at Whirlpool that I will be contacting the BBB and they still showed no concern for my situation. How is a family, especially with a newborn baby, supposed to maintain normalcy without a working fridge? Please help me resolve my situation since Whirlpool has given me no options to truly resolve this issue. I have another appointment with a technician from Sedens coming to my house on June 24, at which point, they will probably guess on another part to order, we will wait yet again for it to arrive, then we will wait for an appointment to install it. After that we will then have to hope it fixed the problem. If the problem wasn't resolved after speaking to the Whirlpool technicians, who are the experts, the first time, I am not optimistic it will be fixed this time. It is not reasonable to let this go on and on with no resolution. Thank you for your help with this matter!
After sending this complaint to BBB, Will from Earl B Fieden came out on Friday, June 24 and he talked to Whirlpool technicians while onsite. He was to order a new thermistor because the flap was closing in the fridge where the vent comes out after a few seconds, it should stay open to blow cool air. The part was ordered and I was called by Feiden on Wednesday June 29 and I was scheduled for an appointment for June 30 afternoon. Will replaced thermistor and the thermistor now registered in the apparatus, where as before when he tested wire on it there was nothing.
The new wire registered but the flap for cool air was still closing. The ice maker is also no longer working. He called Whirlpool technicians onsite. He had to pull everything out of freezer and take freezer drawers and door off. They wanted him to test an inaccessible wire. He wrote it up as unrepairable and was to fax that to Whirlpool when he got back to office June 30. Will called me around 4pm on June 30 to say he spoke to another Whirlpool technician, Steve, and Steve thinks it's the ice maker fan motor. But Will said he looked for the part in warehouses and did not find it anywhere, he even searched for this part from New York to Fresno, California. He suggested I call Whirlpool. Part # W10281584
I called Whirlpool July 1, 12:15pm-1:05pm.
Greg transferred me to Jesus, he is still with customer service, that is after I asked Greg for supervisor. Jesus consulted with supervisor, wanted me to wait until middle of next week because they don't have the paperwork that shows it is unrepairable. I called Feiden on another phone. The lady in the office said she will call Will to see if paperwork was sent, she didn't know. In the meantime Jesus transferred me to a supervisor, Austin, at 12:51pm, he put me on hold. He called Feiden in meantime and left his info for Will to call him back. He told me all this when he came back to line. He is in office today until 8pm and promised to call me back. The call ended at 1:05pm
At 4:40pm I still have not heard back from Austin (supervisor at Whirlpool). I called a representative and he wanted me to just wait for him to call me back. I said I will hold and wait for him because Feiden will be closing. It was 4:40- 5:15pm. Austin said he just got off the phone with Will from Feiden 10 minutes ago and he was about to call me. To make the story short, Austin ordered the part from Whirlpool manufacturer and it can take them 6 business days to try to locate this part, but upon him putting in request the estimated availability date is July 29! And there is no guarantee that it will be available so it could be longer than that.
I asked what would happen if they can't get the part. He just kept saying he will call me and gave me no straight answer. I advised I have been without fridge for a month and he expects me to go at least another month. Demanded a new fridge, he said no because Whirlpool technicians doesn't agree with Feiden that it is unrepairable. They said it's perfectly acceptable for me to go another month without a fridge. He also offered to look at a receipt and possibly give $20/week for fridge I have to rent or buy. I advised him I am using a camper fridge. I told him too many parts have been replaced and that this is a lemon. I asked if it stopped working all together in September, when it's out of warranty, if Whirlpool will say 'sorry there's nothing we can do.' He said yes, it is correct that there is nothing they can do after September. I asked for his supervisor, he said there is no one above him. Gave me address and name for CEO : Jeff Fettig, 553 Benson Rd Benton Harbor, MI 49022. I advised him I will be calling Feiden and calling Whirlpool back. As of July 11, 2011, this is still an ongoing issue.

I purchased a french-door refrigerator on Sept 2011. It has made a loud popping and vibrating noise since I purchased it. Finally, I went to Lowe's store in Little Elm, Texas and asked the sales people what to do. They suggested that I try to level the unit. I tried, but that didn't work. Finally, in May, the unit gets louder and louder. I visited the store again. They told me to call Whirlpool for the repair and gave me the number. I called; a service technician comes out and doesn't hear the sound because it's intermittent, and says that it seems fine to him, leaves and documents that fridge is working properly.
The sounds got louder and louder. I visited the store again and they said I should have called Lowe's service department and not Whirlpool. I called Lowe's service department. The tech comes out and says that it's the icemaker; then removes icemaker. Approximately two days later, I received a call, saying the parts are in. The tech comes out and installs a new unit plus some other parts, says to wait 24 hours before use. I waited until the next day to try it, but the icemaker was not making ice. I called Lowe's service department, All About Service Company; they come out and remove the unit again. They tell me to call the next week to schedule the service call. I called and scheduled it approximately a week later and get an "all day" time frame.
I waited all day long. About 3pm, I called to see where I was on the log. I was informed that they didn't know why the technician hadn't come; and then, they called the service company and was told that they shouldn't have scheduled service call until the part came in. Duh! Another day was wasted, with over 100 degrees in Dallas and no ice again for 2 months. I contacted Lowe's at Little Elm, Texas and the appliance manager informs me that they are working on my behalf as a liaison with Whirlpool, and that I must have a least three service calls before they can replace the unit. My grandkids spent the night, and at about 3 am, were running into my bedroom, screaming and hollering that something was in the kitchen. I know what it was -- a big, hairy, broken refrigerator. At this point, I just want my money paid back. Whirlpool stinks -- just another run-around and another product made inferior.

A repairman for Whirlpool was contacted, but was too busy (no doubt) to call us, or ever make his appointment. My wife contacted Lowe's, who made a complaint to Whirlpool on our behalf. A different repairman was sent out, and told us that Whirlpool was having a serious problems with this model (GI7FVCXWY01).
Lowe's said they would take the refrigerator back, because of the issue, and would give us another one that supposedly was a new one, with repairs made. It worked okay for a couple of months, but now the ice maker is freezing up, and freezing food inside. I hate this refrigerator. I have reported it, and nobody cares. They got our money. Of course, they wouldn't take it back or replace it. It took 2 weeks to get new door gaskets (though it was working), then 5 more weeks to get new doors and, 4 visits by repair. Finally, a repairman with enough pride, to actually straighten it out.

Five months later the refrigerator quit cooling. All food had to be trashed so I called hhgregg and they asked me to call a repair company. The repairman said the door was bent. They ordered a new door and it took six weeks to show up so it was six weeks without a refrigerator! The door finally arrived and had a dent in it. Hhgregg and Whirlpool deny any responsibility for the loss of food or inconvenience. Whirlpool will only let you complain once. They have your phone number and the second time you call you go through the "20 questions" and then get a busy signal. I guess I would do the same if I manufactured junk. Don't buy Whirlpool from hhgregg! My food in refrigerator had to be trashed twice. Once after the initial failure and again before the replacement (dented) door arrived. I bought a Whirlpool Gold French Door Refrigerator in August 2009 at Rosner's Appliance Center in West Palm Beach, FL. The first month I owned the refrigerator, I started building up frost in the freezer. I called for repair. The repairman came out and told me I had to keep the humidifier on and that this is what happens with French Door refrigerators, they tend to frost up. I was not happy with that answer but continued on with my refrigerator. Then I noticed that my ice maker was not working correctly, I emptied the tray and tried again, but it never seemed quite right.
In April 2011, my refrigerator part started freezing my food. I called for repair and the repair company told me that all French door type refrigerators have this problem and they had to order the parts from Whirlpool. The next day, my ice maker stopped working completely. I called the repair person and they said this was a separate issue and to file another claim with my home warranty. So I was mad and called Whirlpool directly and spoke to their consumer complaint department. They said my one year warranty had run out and there was nothing they were going to do to help me. I asked to speak with a supervisor and got the same answer.

Whirlpool called and they said the unit was out of warranty. The repair people stated that the control to activate the compressor burned and this was not the first one they had seen. They replaced the unit with an older style and billed me. Whirlpool has recalled its other brands for this problem, but refused to do anything about its Whirlpool brand. Same problem. I have retained the failed part. Photo and copy of invoice were sent to Whirlpool, but nothing was heard back from them. I should be reimbursed for this failure, food loss and cleanup required. KitchenAid (Made by Whirlpool) KTRA22ELSS01 Stainless Steel Refrigerator (Terrible Product)!
This KitchenAid refrigerator (which was made by Whirlpool) replaced a one-year-old KitchenAid stainless steel refrigerator (not inexpensive), for which the liner cracked inside (not replaceable).
While working reasonably well for the first five years, on the day after Thanksgiving, November 26, 2010, the refrigerator completely stopped cooling. However, service was unable to come out until the next week.
Once there, they discovered that the compressor line where it now routes through the drip pan to evaporate the condensate (evidently a poor cost reduced design, replacing the former condensate heater and fan on your prior models), corroded through where the anti-vibration bushings support this line in the condensate bath (causing a caustic and/or electrolysis reaction that ate right through the line).
While this part is covered by their warranty, there were none available locally, which had to be ordered out of state.
After the line finally arrived, we had been without refrigeration for some 11 days (before they were able to install it), for which virtually all of the contents of our refrigerator and freezer (estimated at $425.00) had to be disposed.
As you can imagine, this was a miserable time in the household, with significantly increased costs (as we ate out much more frequently due to this dilemma). The sad irony here is (in addition to the substandard design) is that in order to demonstrate this defect to the servicemen, the 6-year full coverage (both parts & labor) on these components just elapsed in that we could not demonstrate this defect to them previously (e.g. August 2010, when it started malfunctioning, but would then seem to be working okay when we were going to call them).
We wrote to Jeff M. Fettig, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, who had a college kid call us and tell us we were lucky the warranty covered the $10 part. We, nor our children, will ever buy a Whirlpool product again (POS)! This has cost us $240 on repair labor, $425 on food spoilage, time off work for two repair visits, and the cost for 11 days to dine out.

I have a model # 106.53552202 side by side refrigerator. Since the first year, the ice maker has been having problems. Two to three times, the inside the door clutch broke and Sears came out and did the work under warranty. We just missed the 4th time which is supposedly the time that we get a new refrigerator, compliments of Sears. Shocker, huh?
Well then, the inside ice maker went bad, which cost me another $370.00, and then today, I had a serviceman out another $65.00 for the trap door that lets the ice out of the inside. I have seen hundreds of complaints on the ice maker and wonder how a company can get away with continuing to make the same product which, in my opinion and I'm sure countless others, is defective, and no one cares. Let's just keep charging the consumer to fix your defective manufacturing process.
I am so sick and tired of putting up with substandard products. Whatever happened to pride in workmanship here in the U.S? Oh yes, most things (parts) are not manufactured here. Shoddy workmanship or terrible quality of parts - I'm not sure which is the problem, but I am tired of paying for something that I have to keep paying for after I buy it. How about you? I suggest that Whirlpool should take a good long gander at the complaints and blog on their inferior product online.

This huge expense was prompted by the sudden demise of my 15 year-old Amana refrigerator, along with various warnings of the impending failure of the other appliances listed here. The refrigerator we chose (Model $ GSF26C5EXW00) is reportedly a very new model, and is apparently no longer sold by Lowe's due to the large number of consumer complaints, repair issues, etc.
The unit we received had a problem with the small, cheaply-made roller on the front of the unit that allows it to be moved -according the the Lowe's delivery man, it "popped off it's mount" but he was able to fix it and get the unit installed. The fridge and freezer both cooled down nicely and the ice maker started working, so we moved our food into it.
Within 72 hours, the ice maker stopped making ice. I went through the trouble-shooting steps in the manual to no avail. I called Whirlpool's warranty repair number, and I was told it would be over a week before A & E (the only repair service in my area that Whirlpool reps can schedule directly) could make it to my house.
I asked for a list of authorized repairmen in my area, and got a list of 6 businesses. In calling to schedule a repair visit, I learned that at least 2 of the 6 businesses on the list Whirlpool gave me will only provide warranty repairs on Whirlpool appliances if the unit was sold by their business. Later that day, I found a repairman who could be here the next day.
When The repairman came, he admitted he had neither worked on nor even seen that particular model before. Luckily, the problem seemed to be that the ice dispenser door was stuck open (an item not on the manual's list of things to check). Soon the ice was flowing again, and all was right with the world. Until mid-October, when the ice maker stopped again.
After checking the door in the dispenser, I went through the troubleshooting steps again, and again, there was still no ice. I called the repairman directly this time, and he agreed to come out in 2 days. In the early evening of the day before his visit, the ice-maker started working again, all on its own. Here it is, late November, and guess what? The Ice-maker stopped again today. This time, I will call Whirlpool so that they record the dates of the 2 failures that have occurred since the initial call. I am looking into whether the state of GA has any "Lemon Laws" that apply to home appliances. We purchased a Whirlpool Gold Conquest side by side refrigerator in late 2002 Model #GS6HAXLB03. We were planning to remodel our kitchen soon and thought this would be a good choice to replace the one we were using. The remodeling has never taken place and the Whirlpool remained as a second fridge in our basement. The ice maker and water dispenser have never been hooked up. This refrigerator has had very little use and was mainly used for extra storage.
Last week ,I noticed a small pool on the floor in front of the unit. I found the items stored in the freezer had defrosted. My first thought was that I must have left the freezer drawer slightly ajar. I cleaned the mess up, thinking the problem was solved. I did notice that the wall dividing the freezer from the fridge was extremely hot to touch! I was concerned and kept thinking it would cool down soon. I checked several times throughout the next few days. The refrigerator and the freezer never got cold again. I called a local repairman to come out. He found that a compressor valve had burned out which caused the compressor to fail and the relay to malfunction.
I contacted Whirlpool and was told they could do nothing, since it was out of warranty. The supervisor I spoke with, also said that several years ago the federal government went to the appliance manufacturers and told them to lower the costs of their products. He said one way they did this was to reduce the warranties offered. What incentive is this for appliance companies to produce quality products! Poor quality just means future sales for them.
The unit was Whirlpool's top-of-the-line for that time. It is eight years old, very lightly used and we paid a lot of money for it even on sale! Oh, and the unit I was using then which I am still using in my kitchen is almost twenty years old!
After reading the complaints on this website,I do not think my problem was a result of having left the door ajar. Several other owners of the Gold series side by sides had the same experience. I consider myself fortunate that it didn't result in a fire as many of the other postings reported here did.

Around September 1, 2010 my older model Sears Kenmore refrigerator's icemaker malfunctioned causing a huge flood and thousands of dollars worth of damage to my home. I reported the incident to my American Home Shield rep who had difficulty finding a technician to repair the fridge. All of my food had been ruined and had to be discarded. Temperatures were over 90 degrees for days and I had no way to keep food cold for my family.
AHS claimed that because I had no other refrigerator in my home, they considered this an emergency and promised a repair technician to my home within scheduled the emergency repair appointment with Sears for September! On the day of the service, Sears called to state that they were "overbooked and needed to reschedule". Rescheduled appointments were subsequently cancelled for the same reason, leaving me with no way to keep food at safe holding temperatures at my home.
Days went by before a technician was finally dispatched to my home. I paid the "co-pay" service fee as per the contract and was told that the icemaker was not reparable and would cost nearly $500 to replace. He deemed the refrigerator and freezer safe to hold food, but suggested that the appliance was very near to it's expected life.
On Sept. 5, I purchased and paid for a new Whirlpool side by side refrigerator during an appliance sale at the Poughkeepsie store. On Sept. 13, I took delivery of the new refrigerator. The delivery technicians set it up to factory standards. Assuming the reliability of my brand new appliance, I stocked the refrigerator and freezer with $122 in perishable food items in my new fridge! Within days, I noticed that the temperature inside the refrigerator was not cold and that dairy items needed to be thrown away. I contacted Sears to report the problem and they promised to send out a repair tech the next day, so I moved any other items that might fit in the freezer to try to save them.
The repair service canceled again at the last minute and would not confirm another appointment for weeks. After speaking with several people at the Sears Customer Solutions line, I escalated the matter to a supervisor who told me that she would have my new refrigerator replaced on Sept. 29 and have a repair tech come out to repair the one that was not functioning. Once again, on two separate occasions, the repair service cancelled my appointment, leaving me with rotten food to dispose of and a mess to clean up.
Instead of issuing me a check to reimburse me for my food loss, they gave me the run around stating that the warranty does not cover food replacement. Each person I spoke with agreed that this was really a terrible situation, but they said that Sears was not responsible for replacing food that spoiled in a brand new refrigerator! I got the run around for days. The system created additional stress in our home and took me away from my work and family as I tried in vain to navigate the horrific process of redundant responses in an effort to find a solution.

I purchased a new Whirlpool refrigerator from Lowe’s in May 2010. In August 2010, I noticed the shelves were cracking. I took them out to look at them better and then I saw that the liner in the back was also cracking. Whirlpool sent a tech out to check the cracks. They sent new shelves but refused to either replace the back liner or replace the refrigerator. Whirlpool wants to put epoxy in the cracks. I do not want patches in the liner. I bought a new refrigerator and would like for it to be new or else I could have kept my old one.

We bought all new appliances at Lowes in Marion, N.C. three years ago this August. There are three people in my household and we eat out most of the time. My side by side Whirlpool model#ED5VHGXML10 SS#**6.5 cubic feet started acting up around May of 2010. It was freezing up with lots of the chunky white ice on the outside of the ice maker. We would chip the ice away and it still wouldn't let ice fall down into a cup. When I would open the freezer side of the refrigerator, it would rub against the large clump of frozen ice and fall onto the floor. So, I called the service rep that the Whirlpool 1-800 number recommended my area.
The rep came in and went right to the problem, which was that the flap that kept the air out of the freezer was broken. My husband asked him did they see this a lot and he said no. Don't you find it funny that was the first thing he went to? Guess how much it cost to have it fixed? $184.00. This ticks me off when I don't even use the door ice often. We keep our sodas and tea in the refrigerator. I don't like ice in my drink. I have an old refrigerator in my basement that I put extra food and drinks in at the holidays and I haven't spent a dime on it. It came out of a house that I bought seven years ago and it is the old style. It is a Whirlpool Princess Series. Apparently, the quality has went downhill in the past ten years. I will never buy another Whirlpool Appliance again. This thing is a hunk of junk and I expect more problems in the future! I won't make this mistake again.

I purchased a Whirlpool fridge July 17, 2008 from Lowe's in Crestview FL. It is model # GS5SVAXB00; Serial # SW2124410. This is a side-by-side model with ice/water in the door. The ice is made in the freezer section but drops into a container/dispenser that is actually in the door itself.
At around 18 mos., the dispenser unit started acting up. It would not dispense the cubes or crushed ice. Upon removing this unit from the door, we found that it was completely frozen up and clogged up with ice. I talked to the CS people at Whirlpool and they told me that I was using it on crushed ice too often and that I needed to run cubes thru it each week. This is interesting since hubby & I use mostly cubed ice.
Last time I unclogged it, it took 3 days of using it on cubed ice before it clogged up again. We have also noticed that the last cube on the right hangs up every so often. I can't see it but do notice that ice is not dropping as often as it should and the container is getting low. I'm so ** about spending $1800 for a new fridge and having it croak so quickly that I hope the bluebird of happiness flies up the engineers' orifice (and it ain't the nose!). This is the worst piece of engineering that I've ever seen. The dispenser and the ice chute need to be separate so the ice flakes/chips don't have a place to hang up! This is the last Whirlpool product I'll ever buy.

I purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator model W8RXNGMWD in Nov 09. Within the first 6 months, the refrigerator developed large bands of discoloration on both black painted sides. The Whirlpool technician said it was a defective sheet metal from the factory that was having a corrosive effect on the paint. The defect is highly visible and makes the appliance very unsightly. Whirlpool refuses to address the problem, calling it a "cosmetic" problem. I am very disappointed in Whirlpool and will never buy one of their appliances again.

This is regarding Whirlpool refrigerator (model GR9SHKXMB, year 2004). This is not a complaint about any individual, but about the design/function of the product. The refrigerator door has a plastic base with a molded-in hinge socket. We have not abused the door, but the plastic part broke and the door is falling off. Whirlpool does not show this part on the exploded door diagram, and they list the door at $663!
The plastic around the hinge collapsed from the weight of the door and broke into many small pieces, indicating that a lot of hardener was used in the molding of the part, perhaps to prevent sagging. There is just not enough plastic in the part to support the weight of the door and items intended to be stored there. A small metal bracket could be designed to spread the load, but that would require admission of faulty design, and door removal for installation.

The refrigerator door on my side-by-side Whirlpool Refrigerator (Model ED5FVGXSS) started making a strange sound when opened. Upon further inspection, we noticed that the plastic door bracket was cracked. How does that happen? Come on 2.5 years old? There is only three of us in the house and we eat out 3 times a week. We're talking very low and extremely gentle usage here. Nevertheless, having purchased an extended warranty insurance policy through HHGregg. We assumed it would be covered.
We now find out that it would have been covered by Whirlpool within the first year and it is only covered by the extended warranty if the door falls off. Buyer beware. Whirlpool items are a bunch of junk, definitely built for early replacement and don't bother purchasing the extended warranty either. That's just a plain ripoff! I have a service call scheduled for this week, total service charges unknown at this time.

I touched the melted plastic and immediately a rather large fire started. With two kids under the age of two years old in the house, I was concerned.
After talking to and answering many of her questions, the rude and defensive Customer Service representative named Marti said that most of the fridges they have from when Whirlpool bought Maytag have a recall. But mine does not. 41 fires with property damage occurred but mine didn't rate with her.
Ultimately, she asked what I wanted. I said "I feel its fair to ask to fix or have 40% off new to stay with brand and all I was offered was 10% discount. I spent over $1800 on a Whirlpool Gold side by side refrigerator/freezer over a month ago. It was delivered with far less shelving than the space in the unit required and I spent over $125 to purchase an additional glass shelf for the freezer and a large shelf for the inside door of the refrigerator. I thought this was egregious to begin with, but wanted to optimize the use of the appliance and spent the money anyway, I ordered the parts with the assistance of customer service.
The refrigerator part was not the right one and I spent almost an hour on the phone with customer service looking at diagrams online to determine the correct part I needed. They supposedly credited my account for the wrong part that was sent yet I have never received any confirmation and they charged me $40.84 for the "correct part" on 8/7. I finally got the part 2 weeks later and again it is wrong. I just spent 15 minutes getting through to a supervisor in customer service ( Jennifer) and another 30 minutes on the phone with her to inform me that neither part that was sent to me were parts associated with my model of refrigerator.
I finally pulled out the shelf and read the correct part number from the bottom of the existing shelf that I need two of instead of the one that the refrigerator came with, and was again told that this part is not even listed on the list of parts for my model number, but she would ship it to me anyway for a cost of $42. When I stated that she should just send me the part at no charge because of the aggravation that I have experienced; she declined. This is now going to take another 2 weeks to get to me so all in all, I will have spent 6 weeks attempting to get my refrigerator configured in a way that it should have arrived from the store originally, assuming that they get the right part to me this time. The first part they sent was a different part number than what was listed on the box. It would not surprise me if something like this happens again. Not only does Whirlpool's Customer Service does anything, but their reference materials are all wrong, etc.
I will not be recommending their products or company in the future and will be selecting a different range, microwave and dishwasher when I have to replace these appliances in the near future. I have yet to get the correct part number I need and have no idea if I have been credited for the two incorrect parts that they have sent to me. On the "rebate weekend" in May 2010, we purchased a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator (Mod. # EDSLVAXWOOO, Ser. # HR00454783). We have already had a certified repairman out twice to service our refrigerator. He actually told me that new fridges are intentionally manufactured to last only 10-12 years! Job security? The first trip, he squirted clear silicone around the freezer door to make it seal better. The second time, he worked on the ice maker. The ice maker still drips water constantly. The ice maker (set on cubes) spits out everything from full size cubes to crushed slivers.
It leaves a dirty looking mess in the door recess, where mold is beginning to grow. The clear shelves in the fridge look pretty, but they are extremely inefficient. There is a 2" raised lip all around each shelf, making all that area useless. We feel "taken". The refrigerator does not perform as we were told. The salesman described it as a very popular top-seller. It's non-efficient and I have to constantly clean up the mess in the door and on the floor several times a day. I fear someone (me) might slip and get hurt. I am 64, my husband is 68. We just want our refrigerator replaced with a safe one!

My cat woke me up at 5:00 a.m. The house was full of smoke. I ran downstairs to find that the smoke was coming from the back of refrigerator. I flipped the circuit breaker and the smoldering slowed and eventually stopped. The appliance serviceman who came (not Whirlpool) said it was the worst motor burn up he had ever seen in a fridge.
If I didn't have a tile floor, I would have had a bigger problem on my hands. Luckily, I just have a burned up refrigerator and a very smelly house (which, no surprise, is giving me a giant headache). There was no indication at all that anything was wrong before this - no funny sounds, no burning smells, and no problem with cooling. The insurance company (Liberty Mutual) has been great. Whirlpool freezerless fridge consumers, stay away! I have now been told by 2 independent Whirlpool warranty technicians that the evaporator cooling coils fail at 3 years or less with regularity! These were also manufactured under the Woods company until their bankruptcy/sale to Whirlpool in 2009. The evaporator coil part, when formerly sourced by Woods, was $150 (CDN); Whirlpool's new price for the same part is around $400 (CDN)! With the labor added in this, it makes any repair unfeasible. Is Whirlpool trying to make these troublesome fridges go away by having consumers abandon them on the first repair?
The evaporator coils fail, because of micro-leaks that develop due to corrosion, as the techs explained. They were built very thin for maximum efficiency; however now, they are failing en masse and spewing Freon into the atmosphere. Should responsible governments be investigating? I think so.
Interestingly, the problem is basically a problem with freezerless/all-fridge designs. The technicians also speculated that this was caused by corrosion, because the evaporator coil does not stay in a mostly frozen state like a normal fridge with a freezer. Instead, it stays in a mostly wet state enabling corrosion to work at a much faster rate. I therefore recommend consumers to stay away from all-fridges, until a better evaporator coil is developed!

We purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator in January 2010 and it was delivered in February. The first day, we could not get water or ice out of the dispenser. I had that fixed, but missed two days of work (1 for checking our the problem and 1 for fixing). Next problem, I wake up one morning, a month or two ago, to a puddle of water in my kitchen, under the fridge, and running into a closet so I called for service again. A technician recommends getting a new fridge (missed another day of work).
When I called Whirlpool, they told me that they will not replace the fridge. They told me that I need three completed service calls before they will do anything. I asked the rep why they don't stand behind their product, and he told me that Whirlpool does because they are willing to fix the problem. I don't think there should be a problem because it was a high-end product (at $2,500) and new. I told him that I wasn't happy with spending that kind of money on something that doesn't work. He then told me I could've purchased a fridge from any company and had the same kind of problems. He also told me I was only unhappy because things weren't going the way I wanted them to go.
So, I then went back to Lowe's where the salesman told me he'd check into getting me a new fridge and he'd let me know by Wednesday of that week. I haven't heard anything and that was 6 weeks ago. I go forward with having another technician try to fix the fridge. So yesterday, another guy came (missed another day of work) and he told me that he can't fix it and that the new repair kit hasn't been released by Whirlpool yet. He said that it could be next week, next month, or two months from now.
Last night, we heard a loud thud in the fridge. When I opened the door, a large chunk of ice fell out onto my foot. Thank goodness the baby wasn't around. So, today, I called Whirlpool again and they told me that the technician never ordered the part he needed and they need to know why he didn't install the new ice maker they sent him.
I don't feel like I should have to be going through all this just because I wanted a new refrigerator. It doesn't make sense to me. Tonight, I will be going back to Lowe's again and speak with the manager. The unit was purchased on 6 months same as cash and hasn't even been paid for yet. I'm thinking about putting it on a truck and dropping it off at the service desk.

I purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator from Seidman Appliances in Chester, PA on 4-09-10. By early June, the door gasket on the top corner was not sealing properly. I called Seidman, and they told me to call Whirlpool to have someone look at it. Seidman could not repair or accept a return, unless authorized by Whirlpool.
I called and told Whirlpool about my problem, and they told me they had no history of this problem with this unit. They sent a tech out to service. The tech wrote and said we needed a new door. He stuffed paper towel under the edge of the gasket to help it seal better. He ordered a new door. Another tech returned on July 8 to install.
Then the gasket on the new door was damaged beyond repair, and the service tech took it with him. The tech said there were many problems with this unit, and he, in fact, had to leave my house and go to another who has the same problem. He said the unit should be replaced. So I called Whirlpool and told them this, and they said the tech needed to convey this from my house.
Today, 7-13-10, another tech from Mr. Appliance was sent out to inspect. He placed a straight edge on the edge of the refrigerator where the gasket meets the box. The box was warped, not flat. He said there were problems with this unit, and it should be replaced. He called someone from his truck and was instructed to remove the paper towel and replace it with Permagum. They were now trying to stretch the gasket to fit a bent box. I asked him not to do this. The gasket is not the problem; the box is.
Rachel from Whirlpool Consumer Affairs said that this was the remedy for this particular problem and that they would extend the warranty for an additional year. If there was no history with this problem, why was there a fis already in place? Rachel told me the none of the techs has reported to them that the unit should be replaced. I asked her to contact the tech who had just left my house and verify, since that is exactly what he had just told me. Rachel will contact Mr. Appliance and call me back today or tomorrow.

My husband put in a call to the repairman, but we didn't receive an appointment until July 5. My husband called Whirlpool who agreed to send a repairman from A&E, but that would be in the afternoon of July 8. Since we had to wait 6 days for assistance, I called Lowe's and spoke to manager who authorized a loaner until we could get the Whirlpool repaired.

Concurrent with this situation, I am experiencing serious health issues which require doctor visits and expensive tests and treatments. The funniest is that on the internet side we can see " wij helpen je graag," which means that will help me with pleasure. Big joke. In this case I am sure of one: never more whirlpool products in my house.

First repair under warranty was on June 24, 2009 - 3 months into ownership.
Second repair was for loss of cool air, under warranty which Whirlpool claimed was not warranted any longer because of the mfg. purchaser purchase price installed by the dealership and not when I purchased the new home, 19 March 2010. After much grief on my own and without support of my salesman at Chesapeake Mobile Homes, Whirlpool finally acknowledged the purchase and honored the warranty.
Third repair was in May 2010 for loss of cool air. Because of my repeated complaint, Whirlpool authorized repairs again. Each time a repair tech advised that this model was a problem in their experience and problematic. Now it is not producing proper cooling and I am again wasting food and milk by the week.
At this time I am demanding replacement of this product and not a band-aid for this refrigerator that cannot keep a cold box. Also, the freezer blasts cold air for a while and now thaws and freezes over and over in a cycle so that I am getting freezer burnt food.

We purchased a Whirlpool Gold refrigerator (freezer on the bottom) model # GB9SHDXPQ02 2 years ago and the defrost control board stopped working causing my freezer to fill up with frost and my refrigerator to stop working. Everything spoiled. It cost just under $300 to repair. Now I have a new problem as there are ice drippings coming out of the back panel that is located inside the fridge and I have heard popping sounds. I called Whirlpool and they said they need several calls/complaints on file before they will consider reimbursing or replacing. This is very frustrating. It will cost $80 for them to just come out here. My last GE refrigerator lasted 20 years with no issues.

I bought a Whirlpool french door refrigerator/freezer and dishwasher at Sears on May 31, 2010. I picked up the refrigerator on June 3rd and installed it. The ice maker was DOA. I called Whirlpool (stupid system) and got a woman that seemed to be reading the same information as I had. It says 24 hours to make ice and I was at 20 hours. She would not set up an appointment. On June 6th, I called back in and scheduled a service call. It was for Thursday. The tech was there less than 60 seconds and said that the ice maker was bad. He would order one and it would take about a week.
I notified Whirlpool via email that their quality control was worthless and got a useless reply from someone with no last name, just an initial. I did not reply. Frustrated, I called Sears. Big mistake. The woman spoke horrible English, did not understand the unit was a week old, could not find the information on my purchase and ultimately turned me over to a guy in warranty (?!). He disconnected me.
I went online and called the Sears service number. I got a goof named George. He spoke horrible English. He could not transfer me to someone that spoke discernible English and he refused to take my call back number in case we were disconnected. More dead ends. He finally wanted to send me to warranty. I gave up and told him he was poorly trained, he and his supervisors should be fired and that I was done with Sears.
The repair tech called after one week and told me it would be another week before the ice maker would be installed. Three weeks and counting. I am living out of bags of ice. My old Whirlpool was still working after 18 years and boy do I miss it.
The dishwasher was picked up on June 16th and they attempted to install it on June 20th. The parts are made everywhere except U.S.A. The one it replaced was also 18 years old and a Whirlpool. It was just its time to go. I looked at it and the parts were U.S.A. My problem is that they should have removed the old one and reinstall the new one--not exactly. The water supply hookup requires a specialty fitting that is designed to take a garden hose fitting to a compression fitting as opposed to the 90-degree fitting that was used forever on supply hookups.
I had a horrible time finding this ** fitting and when I did, it cost $4.00. Whirlpool should have provided it in the bag. The model is GU2475XTVY1, $750.00, and has to be pulled back out and cut the end off of the copper supply line as it is flared. One would think that the part would have been included. The fridge is the Gold line and is model GI7FVCXWY02 for $2,899.00. My thoughts at this point--buy cheap, use it until it breaks and throw it away. Customer satisfaction from Whirlpool and Sears is dead and quality control is gone as well.

Friday, June 4th was a great day for us to be home all day. Around noon, my daughter came running upstairs to tell me there was a horrible smell coming from our kitchen. At first, I chalked it up to freshly laid manure in a house behind us, but she told me it was not that kind of smell. It was a burning smell. I ran to the kitchen and immediately knew that something bad was going on. I smelled in and around all the appliances along with the cabinets and quickly pinpointed the smell to our Whirlpool Side-By-Side refrigerator (just 6 years old). Just then, we heard a lot of "popping" going on (like little firecrackers) so I had my daughter grab her brother and told them to wait outside in the front yard. I ran to grab the fire extinguisher and set it on the kitchen table while I called my husband. He had me turn off the breaker switch and call a neighbor to come help me move the fridge and unplug it. He rushed home and immediately called Whirlpool.
Whirlpool's customer service seemed sincere and offered to send out a technician free of charge as our call had been escalated as a safety issue. The technician came out yesterday, June 9th and immediately found the culprit, a fried relay. When I say fried, I mean exactly that! The entire inside was charred, black and unrecognizable. Before he left our house (after wanting $140 to repair it), I did a quick online search for this problem and found the exact claims; along with a major Maytag recall for faulty relay switches causing fires. I am waiting for a call back from Whirlpool. These refrigerators need to be recalled ASAP because they know there is a fire hazard. As of today, we are still without a working fridge in our home. Luckily, we have a small refrigerator in our garage to use in the meantime. We are waiting on parts and a call from the CPSC and Whirlpool.

I purchased a Whirlpool Conquest stainless steel side by side refrigerator in 2002. The ice maker in the door style had to be replaced eight times and it still did not work correctly. Whirlpool suggested I buy ice trays (wish I had known before buying a refrigerator with an ice maker, I would have saved some money). I was supposed to go out of town on vacation on Monday and leave my three dogs, four cats and parrot at home with a visiting pet sitter. I cancelled the trip and I am so thankful.
I woke up Wednesday morning to the smell of smoke. My refrigerator had filled my entire kitchen with smoke. I awoke my son, sent him outside to dial 911 and got all my animals out. Thankfully in time that no one died from smoke. One cat, however, ended up at the vet with a $450.00 bill due to smoke damage in her throat. Whirlpool said they would have someone come out to "look at it and see if I was at fault for their machine catching fire”! The fire department said I needed to have an electrical come out and be certain my electrical was not the problem. So after having an emergency call the electrician went over all my circuits and then removed the back of the refrigerator and showed me the black wires that were on fire. Whirlpool handled my problem with no regard for the fact that my home still smells like smoke. They said I should keep the refrigerator so they can look at it but they would not promise to remove it. I bought a new refrigerator. I would not be without one for over one week. They said, "We may be able to repair your refrigerator." So should I let the food go to waste? They said, "We will not cover the replacement of spoiled food."
So my choice was wait one week for a possible repair (if they found I was not at fault) and let the food spoil at my expense, or buy a new refrigerator and leave the other one in my home for them to "look at"; but they would not take it away when they were done so I would have to pay $59.99 to have a company come remove the old one. They said they may give me a $400.00 credit towards an NRE Whirlpool refrigerator again if they found I was not at fault. How could I be at fault? I went to Lowe’s and replaced my refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, washing machine and dryer with Samsung machines because mine were all Whirlpool or Maytag and I will never trust their appliances in my home again! Beware! I could have lost all my animals to the fire if I had gone out of town and thankfully my son and I are alive today.

We purchased a refrigerator about a little over a year ago. During this year, we have repaired the same part about three times, and now it has broken again, for a total of four times. The refrigerator is not cooling and produces pretty loud clacking noises constantly. We’ve tried calling them to schedule service repairs, hoping that it would solve the problem. After a year of this daily routine of calling every few months, we have grown tired of this. We sent them a letter, complained, and called their customer services just about a million times, hoping to get a satisfied answer, but none of that prevailed. Even now, our refrigerator (the same part) is continuing to break down.

Model GD5RVAXVY. Loud buzzing hum from refrigerator that changes volume at times but was present when the refrigerator was running and could be heard outside the kitchen. Not being able to stand it after a few weeks, I took the covers off the inner works at the bottom. The condensing line metal grid was touching against a support brace at the bottom of the refrigerator - metal to metal. I put in a couple of small pieces of foam and the problem cleared up. How do you put a price on freedom from noise? How do you get service when a refrigerator makes too much noise? Many consumers would not be able to diagnose the problem and develop a solution. Neither would they find it easy to obtain a warranty service call and fix or so I would believe based on past experiences. The problem in this case was quality control or a design flaw or both.

I have a Jade 48-inch built-in refrigerator, installed on Jan. 2006. Jade was bought out by Maytag and then by Whirlpool. This unit has an evaporator drain tray that has been replaced five times, four of which were replaced under warranty. It is clearly a defective design. (I am a well known Aerospace engineer). I have researched this tray and find that is was used in a number of refrigerators, like Dynasty, Dacor, Jenn-Air and Jade. The tray is on the top of the freezer side and the way it is designed, water has to flow uphill and very slowly. They assume static pressure will force the water out of the tray. The drain tube is also heated, but only part of it and water flow can be so slow, the water turns to ice and the drain gets totally blocked.
The fan in this area then causes a vibration and a lot of noise as it tries to force the water out or the water builds up and flows over and down the insides of the freezer. Many of the techs that have come to replace it say this happens all the time. When you have to pay for the repair, the bill is $450.00, a rather costly payment for a design defect that the company should take care of. I also have been told by the techs that this same problem can be found in the 42-inch version of this refrigerator. I have asked that my unit be placed under a lifetime warranty for this part and labor to replace it, but Whirlpool refused. I had to pay for one repair at $452 and will have to purchase extended warranties at a cost of $250 a year due to this continuing problem. I was never told or is it in the user manual that this is a replacement part like an oil filter on a car. Whirlpool should be made to refund the charges I had to pay, and to provide lifetime warranties on this part.

The food in the refrigerator section of our refrigerator was spoiled.
I wasn't able to contact Appliance Direct until they opened on Monday morning, April 26, 2010. A repairman arrived in the afternoon and determined that the main control board was defective and needed to be replaced. He said they could order the part and that it would take approximately two weeks. I told him that I didn't want a repaired refrigerator--I wanted a new one.
I expected Appliance Direct to replace the defective refrigerator with a new one, but they would only agree to repair it. I contacted Whirlpool Corporation, and they also refused to replace it. When I purchase a new appliance, I expect it to be new, not defective, or repaired. If the refrigerator was determined to be defective before it left the store, would Appliance Direct repair it and then deliver it? Probably, if they thought they could get away with it.
Approximately $50.00 worth of food was spoiled in the refrigerator section. Although, the freezer section is cooling properly, the refrigerator section is not; and we have been without refrigeration since April 24, 2010. In addition to the loss of food and the inconvenience of not having a refrigerator to store our perishables for the past 5 days, it has been a timely and frustrating experience dealing with the many telephone calls to Appliance Direct and Whirlpool Corporation.

The repairman from A&E said it was only a relay, but it cost me $300 for the service call and an additional 1-year warranty.
In Mid March of 2010, my ice maker started producing less ice. I had the freezer really full, so I moved some stuff out of it to a chest freezer. I also turned the the temperature a little cooler. I called Whirlpool since it is under warranty and they sent a repairman. He agreed on all the defects and told us that liners cannot be replaced and that Whirlpool would probably want the cracked walls taped. This is exactly the response from Whirlpool. They will allow the repairman to tape over the cracks in the liner and will send new shelves. Since I am of the opinion that there is a good chance more liner cracks will develop and feel that I do not want a new refrigerator that has tape all over the inside walls, I let them know I would like them to come up with a better suggestion.
Whirlpool appears to have no other idea of taking care of what appears to be a manufacturing defect other than slapping tape all over the interior. This is not acceptable and I doubt any Whirlpool employee would want a new refrigerator in that condition. The economic damage may be slight if the refrigerator never develops other cracks and as long as it provides a normal length of mechanical life. However, I did pay the full store price for a defective appliance, even though, at this time, the defect is only cosmetic.

At that same time, I purchased a side by side refrigerator/freezer. Within 2 years from the date of purchase, the refrigerator/freezer stayed hot. I called Whirlpool to tell them the problem. The lady did not help me. Two weeks ago (March 2010), I thought a helicopter was circling over my home. It was the refrigerator making a rattling noise. It stopped after 20 minutes. Then last week, the rattling returned, but much louder. It rattled for 24 hours. The next day, I called Whirlpool. Since I did not have an extended warranty, I had to pay for everything.
Do refrigerators go bad in 4 1/2 years? I paid over $1,200 for it. Whirlpool scheduled an appointment for me with A & E Factory. The repairman removed a plastic baby fan called condenser located on the back of the refrigerator. It was plastic and was replaced with a thin tin metal fan. The rattling did stop. The service man stated, Whirlpool is using plastic parts now, and they are having problems with their appliances. The cost for the part was $100.00; service trip to my home $70.00 and $160.00 labor. The bill total was $327.00 and he was in my home for 15 minutes.
When I purchased the microwave and refrigerator/freezer, I also purchased washer and dryer and AccuBake System (self cleaning stove) and dishwasher. The Whirlpool refrigerator model FRT18HS6DW4 is poorly built. The bottom door constantly becomes misaligned. Service techs have tried several different fixes such as trying to twist the whole fridge frame, adding washers to the bottom hinge to "jack the door up" just a bit and modifying the middle hinge to shift the top of the door slightly.
I finally found what the problem is. The bottom corner of the refrigerator body, where the hinge bracket is bolted, is not welded. It is merely a wrap-around corner. There is absolutely no strength in that corner, and the weight of food placed in the door bins is causing bending and warping of the metal that the hinge bracket is bolted to.
I have 45 of these refrigerators in a relatively new apartment complex and have had this problem with virtually every one of them. After looking on the internet, we pulled the fridge out and checked out the stuff in back.
At fixya.com, someone wrote: "Nov 27, 2007- It sounds like your compressor start relay may be the cause of your smell. It will be located on the side of the compressor. It will either be an assembly that plugs on the side or it will be under a black plastic cover on the side of the compressor. You could use a straw to sniff with. If it is a white assembly, pull it off the compressor (it pulls strait away from the compressor to the left). If you shake it and it rattles, it is bad. If it is under a black cover, it will be a small part that also will pull off the compressor. Again if it rattles it is bad. Get a new one and follow the directions that come with it and you have save money. Good for you! I am betting that it is what is smelling but if not, please give any and as much other info you can. I will be happy to help."
We did as described above, and sure enough, we have a burnt up compressor start relay (part #2220475). My husband is going to a parts dealer right now to get a new one for about $65. I'm grateful we found this now since we'll be out of town soon and could have had our house burn down!

After reading all these posts about the Whirlpool Gold Series Side by Side, all happening within the past few days, I am beginning to believe that Whirlpool created this debacle as a "planned obsolescence" event. I have been on unemployment for the past year and can ill-afford the cost to replace all the food I lost in my freezer and refrigerator.
For two days, I was eating pork and other food items, not even realizing that the Whirlpool Side by Side was at room temperature. This explains the severe stomach pains that kept me awake the past two nights. With all the complaints, I cannot believe that Whirlpool has let this go. I intend to go You Tube and to the Consumer Protection Agency. This is ridiculous with no recall effort on the part of Whirlpool. I have a stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer, but my biggest investment was this refrigerator. I will never buy another Whirlpool product. Not only am I out a refrigerator at this unemployed time in my life, I am also out about $700 in food items. I filled my garbage can with 2 frozen turkeys, meat, frozen meals, entrees and more, not to mention what was in my refrigerator. I am not just devastated, I am outraged.

My 25 cu. ft. side by side Whirlpool Gold purchased in Nov. 2002 worked nicely. On Jan. 2, 2010, I awakened to a burning smell and discovered the house filled with smoke and black soot traced to my refrigerator model GD5SHAXLQ02. I unplugged it and called Whirlpool. I got a tech who said they had nothing of this type of problem on the computer. They advised me to call a repair company. On a Saturday holiday weekend, I managed to find one who came in a few hours. The tech showed me the burned wires, burned relay which caused the compressor to fail. The tech advised me to just buy another fridge since the costs could be upwards to $700. I then see there are many complaints about the same problem. Whirlpool should compensate us for a mere 7-year lifespan for their crappy box. I had to buy another fridge immediately. I’m trying a GE this time.

We woke at 4:30 am to an electrical burn smell in our house. We looked everywhere and finally discovered it was the refrigerator (whirlpool gold side by side). We called in a tech and he told us it was the relay that had started a fire and destroyed the compressor terminals. He told us this shouldn't have happened and it could have burnt down our house.
I then contacted Whirlpool and they asked a lot of questions and told us they would get back to us. They had to contact the Tech who worked on the Refrigerator. After contacting the Tech, they contacted us and we were under the impression that they would exchange our old refrigerator with a new one. That was not the deal--Artrica later told me in another conversation that someone would bring us a new refrigerator and we would have to pay $638.00 at the time or they could come and get the old refrigerator and give us a check for $605.00 for the remaining life of the old one.
When we first contacted Whirlpool, they had told us that Maytag had a recall on the relay but it didn't extend to the Whirlpool. After reading some of these complaints, I see we aren't the only ones experiencing this. We are not going to accept the check for $605.00 we would like some legal advice first. We are without a primary refrigerator with ice maker and water. I lost a days work on this and have made numerous long distance calls and will have a bill coming from the Tech. No money to replace the quality we thought we had.

On December 22, I called to report that our brand new Whirlpool side by side refrigerator purchased from Ikea was not working. This unit was delivered on December 14 and installed on the 17th. It was installed at our house on Fire Island, New York. It never worked. Sure the lights worked but the machine did not cool or freeze. When we called Whirlpool, they made an appointment with Metro Service. At that time, we were assured that Metro could service our refrigerator on Fire Island. On the day of the appointment, the repairman called our contractor to say he'd be a little late. When the contractor told him he had missed the last ferry, the repairman said they did not do service on Fire Island.
Next day, I called Whirlpool. I got them to understand where Fire Island is. They acknowledged that they do not know where it is and they will get their resource team to find a repair service that will service on Fire Island. They also promised that I will hear back from them in 48 hours. I called them back on the third day. They again setup an appointment with Metro. I again explained the issues and the problem. Again, the resource team will work out the problem, this time in 24 hours. I called back two days later. They still have no answer from the team.
On December 30, I got an automated call from Metro saying they will be at our city apartment on the 31st in the afternoon to repair the refrigerator. This is after I spoke with Metro and they told me they did not provide service on Fire Island! I called and cancelled this appointment. On the phone with Whirlpool today, the 31st, they still have no information as to who would make the repair. The resource team will get back to me as soon as they can. I gave a deadline of Monday, January 4, 12 noon, NY time.
This has been a huge waste of time. These people do not have the capability to deal with anything other than the most simple of problems. This refrigerator has never worked and Whirlpool will not replace it and they can't service it. I offered to return the refrigerator to Ikea and exchange it for a new unit if Whirlpool would pay the shipping from Fire Island to Hicksville and back ($100). They can't even organize that! Whirlpool is a company with no vision, no service and poor or missing quality control. Stay away from them!

I took off the back panel anticipating that I was going to find some debris. Instead, I found that the relay switch was arcing from a short. Every time the compressor kicked on, a small flame is emitted. All four wires are completely scorched. However, the current is still operational. Obviously, I have unplugged the unit. Within 2 months, it failed again. We contacted Whirlpool corporate headquarters, and they apologized for all the problems and sent us in writing if it fails again within a year, they would replace the unit. They then repaired the unit for the second time. Two months later, 2 weeks before Christmas, it failed again. We contacted Whirlpool to let them know it failed again. They informed us that the manufacturer that made the refrigerator for them was filing for bankruptcy and they will no longer honor the warranty or their written promise to replace the unit if it failed again.

I purchased a 2005 Whirlpool Refrigerator Model GS2SHEXNB00. On 25 Nov. 09, the light bulb and the digital display with the Refrigerator and Freezer settings stopped working. I called the local ACME Appliance Store, 2nd Street Jamestown, NY where I purchased this unit to schedule a repair. The repair person arrived later that day. He performed a number of routine electrical tests on the door light switch, light bulb socket, and the wiring around the area of the controls display. The repair person determined that the problem was a result of a circuit board that controlled the lights which were not working. The repair person returned on 1 Dec. 09 with the new circuit board. The repair person replaced the circuit board but this did not fix the issues. The repair person left saying he would be in contact soon. The repair person called back that next day and exclaimed that he would not be able to fix the unit and provided the A&E Factory Service 800 number.
I called the A&E Factory Service number and scheduled an appointment for a $65 service call. The service man arrived on 11 Dec. 09. The A&E service man spent a large block of time testing the electrical wiring associated with the problem. The next hour or so, the repair person spent his time calling his support desk. The repair person explained that the electrical lines were only displaying 100 volts of current. After further discussion and investigation, the A&E Service help desk explained the problem as a known issue but no service technical bulletin.
Technical Comments from the A&E Work Order: Product malfunction - Per Stac Routing of man Harness against h20 valve caused both Circuit boards to fail, Emgy (Emergency) Ordered Same.
I talked to the service man and he explained that a wiring harness was assembled very close (touching) to a solenoid controlled water inlet valve for the water and ice in the door. The service man explained that during the normal functions of the solenoid valve, the electrical signals produced caused the wiring to destroy both the circuit board that controls the lights described above and the main circuit board. He then explained that the A&E Help desk told him that both boards were required to be replaced and the wires moved away from the valve.
This process took 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Service man then started to type in the parts and service costs. Now this is what was given to me:
Labor $211.00; Tax 16.35; Sub Tot $227.35;Parts required Collect: Sub Contrl-B $225.81; 46 106 2255233 1; Sub Cntrl-el; 46 106 W10135090 1 $108.74; Parts sub-total $360.48;
Original Estimate $587.83; Grand Total $587.83
At this point, a $65 service call is $211 and I am looking at over $360 in parts. My thoughts are that I did not open the back of this refrigerator and place the wiring next to the electrical valve which ruined the 2 circuit boards. This, to me, is a design or assembly issue at the manufacturer. I am trying to understand what steps I can perform to reduce the amount of money I am spending on this repair.

I purchased Whirlpool refrigerator model # GX5FHTXVY00 which has French doors and a bottom freezer in stainless steel 25 cu. in July 2008. This summer of 2009, I noticed rust on the French doors when cleaning them. Taking a flashlight, I shined it across the doors and was amazed to see that there was rust pitting on both doors. I called the dealer who we purchased the fridge from, and they sent their technician who confirmed that it was actually rust and said that this should never happen with stainless steel. He contacted Whirlpool and spoke with Beth in the Partner Team for dealers. She said Whirlpool would replace the door panels but since the one year warranty expired in July, I would have to pay 50% of the retail cost of $448.25.
The dealer argued that I did call and report the rust, but due to summer travel/vacation, I was unable to have them inspect it before September. He also said it was robbery to charge the retail cost of the door panels and tried to get Whirlpool to agree that I should pay 50% of the cost of the door panels $279.74 - he further told them that I should not have to pay anything since this was obviously a defect, especially since there is absolutely no rust on the freezer door. Whirlpool refused to change their decision. So after the dealer attempted to get Whirlpool to replace the door panels, I also called Whirlpool and spoke to DeSharon. She told me that all negotiations with Whirlpool are the responsibility of the dealer and I got nowhere with her. She further explained that the problem is only cosmetic and that the refrigerator is fully functional! Can you believe that? Did I call Whirlpool, or did I call the government?

When the tech brought the new part (and this can also be found online that there is a new part number for replacement), the motor was identical. The difference was the kit now included a large rubberized washer that slides over the end of the shaft to keep water from running into the motor. This tells me Whirlpool recognized the design deficiency and fixed for replacements, but they didn't do a recall nor send out the rubber washer to be installed. Hence, as a consumer, I'm out just under $200 for a design deficiency by the company.

The service person attended the call on October 26 at 6 p.m. He detected the fault and replaced the 'RELAY O/P' switch attached to the compressor and said that the fridge is OK now. He charged me Rs.500 for parts and labor. The fridge was cooling well, but after 1 hour, I found a burning smell from the refrigerator.
I off the fridge and called the same service person to attend to it. We purchased a side-by-side freezer/fridge (model number ED2HHEXTQ00) from the Brick in Guelph, Ontario on January 15, 2007. The freezer works fine. The refrigeration portion has never worked well and is unable to cool any products placed within it. We (and the service technician) have tried vacuuming out the front, vacuuming out the back, defrosting the deposit drain, inserting a restrictive device so that the bottom drawer in the freezer unit does not block water from dripping into the deposit drain (which is apparently a design flaw with these units), rearranging food in the fridge so the cooling fan was not overexerting itself, removing the compressor cover, replacing the compressor cover, defrosting the fridge completely and letting it stand unplugged for two days so it could reboot, etc. ad nauseam.
On September 28, 2009, after numerous service calls, the technician finally deemed the unit unrepairable and advised us of our option to purchase another fridge through Whirlpool of equal value (wherein we would have to pay additional money since the unit had depreciated) or try and get a lesser model out of Whirlpool). Whirlpool refuses to honor our request to replace the unit at this time since they want the technician to install a new compressor (at our expense). The technician has already stated to Whirlpool Canada (and to us) that replacing the compressor will do nothing to rectify the problem since the freezer works as it should.
We are at an impasse and saying that Whirlpool customer service is deplorable is a massive understatement. They are rude, uncaring and boorish. Whirlpool Canada is refusing to honor its own paperwork, which states the warranty on labor/parts is 3 months. They want us to pay for the next service call we have scheduled, plus any parts required regardless of the numerous service calls for which we have paid during the same 2-year long battle. I will either get this fridge working properly and sell it for a huge loss or I will chain it out in front of my home with a large sign stating this is a lemon, do not buy from Whirlpool.

We remodeled our kitchen in 2007, purchasing the stainless steel Whirlpool collection including a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, microwave/vent, electric stove/oven, and dish washer. When we got it, the handles on the appliances that were supposed to be part of a matching collection had different colored handles. We let that slide because although they looked corny if scrutinized, they looked okay from afar. And the company did not seem to think it odd that they did not match. But when a piece of food was on the handle of the oven door and I scratched it off with my thumb, the handle lost the color as if it had simply been painted on. Also, the handle was pure plastic. The handle for the drawer under the oven door was also plastic, and within a year had a chunk missing.
The oven door also allows for any liquid from the stove top that overflows to seep into between the two panes of glass. This cannot be cleaned without completely removing the door from its hinges and separating the glass panes and washing them. The microwave door handle also started losing its paint. And lastly and most disturbingly, the refrigerator and freezer door handles are placed in such a way that when you close one of the doors and have your thumb in the normal position to do so, it pinches the thumb quite nastily. This has happened to us enough times that we have figured another way to shut the door without using the handle. However, guests of our house do not have that experience and frequently come to me with their thumb in their mouth and a frown on their face. This should not be an issue. It hurts!
Whirlpool has replaced the first handle with the paint issue. This is the only issue they have been able to handle. The oven door has been checked by service repairmen a couple of times, cleaned, and put back - no changes made, just cleaned. And there is no way for them to change the refrigerator door handles without changing the structure. So after spending over $5000 in product, we are finding ourselves waiting for the day when we can afford to replace them with a different brand since Whirlpool isn't interested in fixing their problems.

The only way I can avoid the freezing up is to empty it daily, so when I am gone or on vacation, it freezes up and is unusable. My wife wanted me to call a repairman, but I did some research instead, and found out just how many consumer complaints there are against Whirlpool in general and refrigerator/freezers in particular. I also used complaint solutions to fix the problem myself, at least temporarily! I took off the inside walls, and found the entire evaporator coils section frozen solid. Not wanting to wait days for it to thaw, I used pans of hot water to thaw it. Now, it is August, and the ice maker is not making ice again, although as of this e-mail, no other problems currently are present.

When the repairman comes to fix it, he needs to take apart the freezer side, and defrost the coils with hot water. All that water needs to go somewhere, so it ends up on my floor, and seeping into my cabinets, it has become a mess.
I called the Whirlpool customer service rep, and she had said a Whirlpool technician needs to come out to my house. And when he is there call Whirlpool and verify my model number and the problem. The lady on the phone said "that my model number does not exist". So, I told her, "You mean Whirlpool didn't make thousands of these refrigerators? I bought a Whirlpool refrigerator last June. Less than a month after I bought it, the fan blew and I had to have it replaced. Now, after less than a year, I had to call to have it serviced because it was leaking water from the freezer side. The guy who came out to do the repair said that the tray that catches the water after it defrosts is cracked and is leaking through, causing a big puddle to form underneath the freezer. He had to order the part because he said that he has never had to replace this part in any other refrigerator that he has repaired. So again, I will have to wait until the part comes in, schedule the appointment, and wait for him to come to replace the part. Due to the water sitting underneath the refrigerator, it has been leaking through the floor, causing a stain on my ceiling underneath.

On June 18, 2009, at approximately 2:30 am, I awoke to the sound of my smoke alarm and my alarm company representative was asking me if I would like to have them contact the Fire Department. There was smoke and the smell of something burning but no visible fire. The Fire Department located the smoke coming from the back of my refrigerator.
I have contacted Whirlpool and scheduled a service appointment for tomorrow with A&E at a cost of $65. The refrigerator is a side by side Whirlpool refrigerator manufactured in 05-2003 model # ED5SHGXMT00. Based on all of the information that I have found online, this product should have been recalled in March 2009 when the Maytag refrigerators were recalled. This is clearly a safety issue and a fire hazard that must be brought to the attention of Whirlpool's consumers before this result in serious injury or death.
On the Consumer Affairs website, there are approximately 32 complaints involving Whirlpool refrigerator accidents that were caused by electrical problems, where there was either smoke or fire due to a faulty relay component. I will keep you informed about what happens and which steps I take in resolving this matter.

I purchased a Whirpool Refrigerator in February 2006. Within 3 months, the compressor fan stopped working. At this time, the warranty covered the repair. Now in June 2009, the compressor fan went up, and the repair bill was $268. The repairman stated that they have seen several cases of this. It seems to be that the fan was faulty from the beginning.

Of course, it has failed again, but now there is no warranty. I am angry. I will never buy another whirlpool (nor Maytag now). I will take apart the door and put in screws. And if that doesn't work, I will seal it off and not use it. I won't pay whirlpool to put in another substandard. I know it's gonna break part. Air leaks into the freezer, ice builds up in freezer, which causes the refrigerator to run more and costs me money.

Recall? Another Whirlpool Gold side by side purchased in June of 2003. My wife came home and there was smoke in the house and it smelled like electrical. She noticed the fridge had no lights. She called me and I came home to find the breaker had tripped; it was caused by the compressor relay. It had overloaded, fried and melted the terminals on the compressor. Thank God it tripped the breaker or she would have come home to ashes. I called Whirlpool and they took my information and transferred me to the safety department which was closed. I left a message. We'll see what happens next. I lost $200 in food.

Another burned up Whirlpool refrigerator. Our daughter woke us up early one morning complaining that the house smelled of smoke. It took a while, but we figured out that the fridge was the source of the problem. We unplugged it and called repair. Repairman found the "start device" (device that powers on the compressor) was fried and that the terminals melted off the compressor, the wiring melted and the insulation scorched. The fridge was bought in December of 2003. I called Whirlpool. They claim they have no issues on something like this. I informed them that Maytag has done a recall for this problem and they knew about and were quick to point out that the recall were for refrigerators produced prior to Whirlpool acquiring Maytag.
They were kind enough to offer us a 15% reduction on our next refrigerator if and only if we purchased a Whirlpool, Jenn-Air, Maytag, KitchenAid or Amana. We had a good laugh at that as why would anyone buy a refrigerator from Whirlpool after it fried itself less than 7 years into its life? Repairman bill was $100 just for the visit and the cost of a new (not Whirlpool) refrigerator. There appears to be enough people having this problem, so why can't something be done?

It may take up to a week. Whirlpool said tough luck, no assistance on the food loss or anything else. I have other Whirlpool appliances. I won't have any more. This borders on the sham cheat way of doing business!

After just less than 6 and 1/2 years of service, our Whirlpool Refrigerator burned out a relay causing the breaker in the house to trip and damaging the compressor. I called Whirlpool and asked them who they recommended to service the refrigerator. They gave me the name of A&E repair. I called them and they came out. The repairman came out on a Saturday and determined that I needed a new relay and compressor and it would cost $700. He called Whirlpool and their customer service said that there was nothing that they could do, but he gave me a number of someone else within Whirlpool who might help. On Monday, I called Whirlpool and was told that there is nothing that they could do, specifically since I had already had the work done, as if people could wait around for Whirlpool to make a decision or if anyone even knew that that was their policy.
Anyway, when I asked to talk to someone higher up, I got that their system was down and he couldn't connect me to anyone and to try back tomorrow, which I did. The next day, a woman gave me the same answer as the guy the day before, there was nothing that they could do because I already had the work done. She however refused to connect me to anyone else. Next, I emailed Whirlpool directly. They returned my email saying that someone would contact me and they did and I got the same answer. This is a defect in Whirlpools parts. I originally bought this refrigerator because I had an 18-year-old refrigerator and I was afraid that it would go up before a big party. Today, that 6-1/2 year refrigerator went up, but my now 24-year-old Sears refrigerator is still in service, working great. Apparently, the Internet is filled with people with this same problem.

I have all Whirlpool Gold Appliances in my home that were brand new in 2004 when I moved in. One by one, they are breaking down. None of the appliances get a lot of use. My side by side refrigerator lights started making sizzling noises and then burnt out. I cannot put any bulbs in as they continue to sizzle. Now I have a very dark refrigerator with no lighting. The next issue is my over the range/hood microwave that stopped working completely that I had to replace. Next, my Calypso washer is leaking lots of water from underneath the machine. It's probably not worth fixing, I am told. It’s probably cheaper to buy a new one. I have spent a lot of money on my home and appliances. My parents have had appliances that have lasted more than 30 years! It is a shame how the manufacturers are getting away with the price they are charging and the appliances only lasting 2-4 years. That should be against the law. Maybe they should start making disposable appliances, because that's what they are now. I am outraged about Whirlpool not standing behind their products and the complaints I have read.

Our refrigerator broke down. In the process of finding out the problem, we found a recall. On finding this out, we called about the recall. We spoke to someone at Whirlpool instructing us to send the receipt for the part that was fixed and a list of items we lost. I faxed a copy of my credit card statement (which we used to pay for the part) and a list of lost items. Then I received a call stating that the information was incomplete and that nothing would be done. "Your refrigerator is too old." Let me tell you something; the recall states that the refrigerator could have caused a fire, and we could have lost a lot more than just the food in it. We could have lost everything we have and our lives.
I feel, whether it makes a difference or not, the person we talked to should have helped us resolve the problem instead of blowing off in the nastiest way possible. I know the calls are monitored and someone should listen to the call that was made on 5/30/09 to a Mr. Ron **. I would expect a response to this statement but I am sure, as sure as we got taken care of that we will not hear anything back. I just had to get this off my chest. Thank God I still have a chest to get this off of and no fire at my house.

Oh my Lord, now I'm really scared. I've read all the problems with the Whirlpool fridge and the fire stuff is really disturbing. I'm mad because my almost 2-year-old side-by-side is having the ice maker problems - sticking flap on door dispenser causing lots of frost buildup and in general, not working. The repairman just left after a $50 service call to inform me that I needed the repair kit that Whirlpool has apparently had to make for this specific problem. It will cost around $75, plus another service call, plus labor. Around $150. I'm livid. I also have that noisy problem in the water lines to ice maker. I just learned to live with that, but now I'm dejected over the possibility of fire; lots of parts and labor costs; no bailout or even concern from Whirlpool.
Gee, I only want a simple life and a simple fridge like my mom's. It was 40 plus and still going strong when my mother died. Well at least I vented. Thanks. I got to run and see if I can teach my cats to dial 911 if I'm not here when the fridge ignites.

They said they had to have a second opinion, so they had us call Hamilton Appliance repairman come out. He has been here four or five times at least. I called last week and asked him to call Whirlpool and find out what we are going to do about this noise. We called Whirlpool again and they said that the repairman would have to call and say they couldn't fix it before they would replace it.
I called Hamilton's this morning to see what was going on with it. I was told Whirlpool told him to order another part. How long is this going to go on? How many parts can they replace on a new ref? I bought a Whirlpool dishwasher and a new stove at the same time. I am not having a problem with them. I feel after this many service call on a new refrigerator that Whirlpool should replace this one. When people come to my house and hear my ref, they think I am crazy for putting up with it.
