I'm a veteran award-winning producer-editor. Over the last two years I've gotten three jobs from Thumbtack users who each gave me high marks. Now, over the last several months, because of their high bidding costs, I've lost hundreds of dollars bidding for projects I'm qualified to do-- money I could ill-afford to lose. Their system benefits only them. Other companies ask for a portion of your earnings... a system I can deal with... but Thumbtack prices projects high and offers NO recourse unless your project bid is not viewed. In addition, their profile page offers no ways of customization... it is bland and uninspired and does not allow a way for professionals to truly highlight their skill sets and products. I am no longer going to use them and will advise others to avoid them also.

This company is a lead generation business for professional business. I have used it to build my small painting and construction business for years. You would get interested customers that would fill out a questionnaire and this would entail what they want, where they want it and when they want it done. Thumbtack has removed the ‘when’ part of the questionnaire and refused to see that this makes it impossible for the contractor to know if they should be spending money on the lead. As a small business owner I cannot simply take on projects that are being requested for immediate execution as I am usually booked up into the future from 2 weeks to a month in advance but use the website to obtain more prospects. Without us knowing when we are in the dark and throwing away money often.
I’ve tried to have this handled and Thumbtack gave me the run around for two months. I’m now being told this is the new standard and no refunds will be given for customers leads that needed to be done immediately and after I’ve spent money on the lead I find this out. This is greed on their part and just ruined a good working relationship.

After running up huge credit card bill with Thumbtack charges; I realized something was wrong. Thumbtack charges the contractor for every bid he submits regardless of whether he gets the job or not. The only way the contractor gets his money back is if the customer doesn’t look at the bid in 48 hours. Customers will of course look at every bid to get best price. So the monkey is always on contractor's back. Do not use Thumbtack if you want to make money since you are always at a disadvantage if you are the contractor.

I spent $100 dollars in one week with fake requests then I got nothing in return. I truly believe these people are creating fake profiles and fake requests in order to make to scam. I was waiting for all the bad reviews to start pouring in, and they have. Thumbtack made a ton of money last year. They are riding "the wave" and have artificially made it bigger. That wave will shortly crash in the next year. They are sending estimates to 15 people, the prices have gone up, and up and up. If you want to respond to a review you will see it but it will NOT SHOW UP. Just clear your internet's memory. Search your company on google, open your business on Thumbtack and see for yourself.
I just listed a few of the changes Thumbtack has made. I could list plenty more bad moves... So why would Thumbtack a company that was growing so strong be killing itself? Well I think when the wave crashes and they killed it making $$$ they may switch to Homeguide - they are the same people, and they started that company not long ago. By the time they make the switch, they will have made millions $$$. Remember this is the same company that deleted all the reviews companies had a while back. Basically making the business start from scratch. By doing that it opened the playing field to other businesses making more money for Thumbtack.

I was required to do a background check, which I did and passed. However, Thumbtack wouldn't approve my request because I do business under my nickname Chuck. They wanted me to change my name and go by Charles, the name on my birth certificate, or they wouldn't allow my background check. That's when they lost my business. I don't go by Charles and I won't. I've established myself for years in my industry by that name and I'm not about to change it now. I don't see how I can cash checks as Chuck, open bank accounts and credit cards as Chuck but they want me to change my name to be on their site. Customer service isn't any help so I canceled. They're idiots!

They are NOT small business friendly and should just say when you sign up they want companies with a large workforce. They ask what area you want and kind of jobs and then send and charge you for every BS lead no matter where.

As a small accounting business, I started using Thumbtack in 2015. It turned out to be lucrative but costly. However, I decided to give it more of a chance. My profits outweighed my expense. This proved true in 2016 as well, however, now it seems like more of a scam with what they are doing now that they hooked us on the product. They have changed every rule they started with. In the beginning, only five pros could quote one project. Now it is actually unlimited. On top of that, three times in less than a month they have increased the price. For example, to bid for a simply tax return it was $8.35 and after three weeks it changed to $11.69 and as of today it is $15.03. The price increases with every circumstance... Head of Household costs at least 2 more credits at $1.67 per credit... etc. I have also noticed they charge higher prices in various states.
They have also started what they call Instant Quote... or instant match. But with that, they changed the range of who is quoting. Even though my range says quote within 25 miles, I now get quotes from all over the U.S. And here is how Thumbtack's greed comes into play... they send your quote to every applicable customer. Imagine if let's say one person requests a quote for simple tax return... Every accountant's quote is sent and out of curiosity most customers open at least ten quotes... thus giving Thumbtack at least $150 per customer request.
I, however, feel that this is higher. In the first hour of instant quote, I was charged several $11.89 fees. I instantly turned it off once I realized what was happening. I also feel that they were opening some of the quotes themselves or hired someone to set up fake emails and opened the quotes. There is no way to prove this as we do not get access to their email accounts. Thumbtack has become a greedy company who has now catered to themselves instead of the customer or the PRO... this is no longer a viable option for me. I certainly hope others take heed. The greed is real and not necessary. They were already making money. I hope there is another company that has better practices.

First of all, I didn't get that much business from TT, and I was with TT for at least two years and sent out quotes regularly. I was already considering leaving, because I was not finding it to be a good way to spend my marketing dollars. What I REALLY have an issue with, though, is this new background check they have imposed and the fact that you can't do ANYTHING until you undergo it. At first, I had no problem with that. What I have a PROBLEM with, though, is that the company who does these checks requires you to submit your sensitive documents ELECTRONICALLY. That's a huge NOPE from me. I have deactivated my account with TT, and I don't feel it's a loss at all. There are PLENTY of ways to market your business as a sole proprietor or small business without compromising your personal information. So long, suckas!

Hi....i do want to state that upon double checking I have been booked more than a couple of times in the last couple of months. . Since November 25th I have booked 10 jobs, but zero this month and they have pretty much eliminated all general party leads under $11. dollars and change over the course of the past few weeks and all my parties have been booked with leads that were their old rate of $8.35 or less, a threshhold I am not comfortable going over. I have paid them almost $300 since the last time I booked an event under their new system.
Original Review: Feb. 17, 2018
I first started using Thumbtack for my DJ service in 2013 and they quickly became a very important part of my business. I was working one to two jobs a week from thumbtack for years. I currently have booked over 300 parties from the site and have a hundred and twenty three five star reviews. Long story short they have changed their business model. They no longer allow you to have templates when you respond to customers, they send the same basic info...pricing, hours etcetera to everybody. They used to allow only 5 people to respond to leads, now up to 15 can be used.
They used to charge you around $8 for a typical lead now it's 15 to $20 and they want everybody to switch to a “Pro Assist” set up where they charge you $15 to $20 for every customer who contacts you. The customers contact you asking you the questions that were always included in your template! So every time I customer messages you and says "are you available on my date", Thumbtack charges you 15 to $20. Also, Thumbtack list four commonly asked question on the template all the customers see and one is, “Are you available on my date”. If a customer clicks that you are charged between 15 and 25 dollars on average.
Furthermore, Thumbtack has you fill out a calendar with your schedule so they know who to send your responses to but they don't let you tell the customer you're available on their date when the customer receives your initial information and then they bill you when the customer asks if you’re available! I have booked one party in the last month and I spent over 300 on leads to get a $300 booking!
It used to be an incredible service and I don't know if someone new took over the company or what is going on but I feel like I am just throwing money down the rabbit hole with them. Thumbtack also dominates the market. For every lead I get from a Gigmasters for example, I probably get 15-20 from Thumbtack, which makes you dependent on them. They have doubled and almost tripled the cost of an average lead and tripled the amount of pros that clients can contact in the last year. They were the best lead site I have ever seen in my 25 plus years in this business up to about a year ago, and had a business model that was extremely fair to the vendors. They have completely abandoned that. Very frustrating, hopefully they will fix things.

As a professional photographer, I started doing business with Thumbtack three years ago and within 6 months became a "Top Pro". I was spending anywhere from 6.00 to 25.00 to bid on each job and once the quote was viewed I would lose my money whether the client ever contacted me or not. Still it was working... soon however Thumbtack started lying to me about how many other "pros" they would allow to bid on one job. The max was suppose to be 5 but I soon found out it was actually 10 or more. THEN they upped their prices and (Now I pay upwards of 45.00 on some jobs) they ALLOW other "pros" to UNDERBID what the client says they are willing to pay!!!
This is helping to water down an already oversaturated market that is full of "people with a camera" and not people who are actual professional photographers! Simply put, no one can go to home depot, buy a wrench and start calling themselves a plumber but anyone can buy a camera and start telling everyone they are a photographer! Everyone starts somewhere but Thumbtack tells the clients that they are connecting them with PROFESSIONALS and half these people are hobbyist trying to make a quick buck and us real pros are fighting to make a living! Between the price hikes, the dishonesty and the fact that they allow people to underbid what the client says they want to pay and still charge a premium is ridiculous!!!
I have seen this company go from one with integrity to one that has gotten beyond greedy and they are completely dishonest to boot! I spent over 6000.00 last year alone and they do NOTHING to correct these clear issues!!! I am taking my business elsewhere and would strongly discourage anyone to get in bed with this completely crooked money grubby company!!!

I've been using Thumbtack for years, but then after writing to Thumbtack about how I responded to a customer who didn't have any professionals respond to them was changed. This is their letter: We recently updated the information showing on requests. Instead of the number of pros who quoted, we're now showing you the number of pros contacted by the customer. This update was done so pros can gauge the responsiveness of a customer before sending quotes. Feel free to reach out if you have further questions.
After that I decided to deactivate my account. I'm not going to give a company any money that shows me only the amount of professionals that was contacted. It takes away my drive to contact them. Heck, that customer may have been contacted by 15 professionals!! That customer may not want to hear from anymore Thumbtack Pros. No more... Done. And Good Bye. Now they're starting something new, right after I deactivated my account. Skeptical.

I emailed them to say that I had someone that had reviewed and had blatantly lied. I even provided proof of this lie that I will now be talking to my lawyer. They refused to remove the review even though the "customer" had lied. Then they say that they need reviews so customers get an honest trustworthy opinion. This wasn't honest... I always work with my customers. On all my platforms for advertising I have high ratings, but we always run into that one customer who just looks for trouble. Seems they care more about the people that DON'T PAY THEM MONEY. On top of that, they continue to raise their prices. I don't get much to any business off of them so it won't be a big loss to me. But seriously almost $4 to send a quote to one person. Half the time the people don't even respond or see it so I don't even know how legit this company is.

I don’t understand how this company can still be in business after all the horrible reviews and customer service and unethical business practices!! I signed up as a Pro a couple years ago for my phone repair business and have been intermittently using them ever since. But now out of the blue they have deactivated my account for NO REASON and told me I have to do a background check!?? Seriously? I’ve been using TT for years and after this long you NOW want to see if I’m a “criminal”??!!! Don’t you think it would be smart to do a background check BEFORE you even start getting customers?
I’ve been a registered nurse for 15 years so I can pass a background check with flying colors but THAT IS NOT THE POINT... nor for me at least, I just do NOT agree with this. I don’t work for TT and my 5-Star rating/reviews should tell potential customers and TT that I have a legitimate, respectable business that I’m operating! Besides that I just do not feel comfortable giving TT and some random third party company (CheckR) to have access to ALL of my personal and financial information! Besides, this should be about my business/company, not me personally! To top it off I’ve been told by other TT Pros that have completed the background check and have NOTHING on their record besides a couple traffic tickets, and because of those tickets TT then deactivated their accounts indefinitely and have lost all of their quotes, pics, prospects, reviews etc that were associated with their TT account and no longer can use TT.
This is SOOO WRONG! Just for a traffic ticket? I DO also have a few traffic tickets from many years ago and there’s no way in hell that I’m going to give them even a chance to discriminate on me because of that because I’m deleting my account! All of that BS aside, the other HUGE issue with TT is their FAKE LEADS! As you’ve read one complaint after another about all the fake leads, I won’t repeat what everyone else has already stated. But yes, I also received a lot of fake leads. And don’t bother calling TT’s customer service... OMG they’re the most non-helpful people ever!
You’ll get nowhere with them, they can’t even explain to me why they don’t do background checks at sign up. Actually about 80% of the questions I was asking them, they would just not respond! They just sat in silence on the phone. I’m assuming waiting for me to change the topic? Anyways... pls pls PLEASE do NOT bother with this company!!! And if anyone has any good solutions to getting this company SHUT DOWN, pls let me know!

I have used Thumbtack for 3 years and have been very successful. I am a professional organizer and received many requests. I had been hired 43 times with 28 five-star reviews. I was considered a “top pro” whom they cite consist of only 4% of their professionals. But they have now changed their model moving to “robo” quotes. Impersonal and cold. Instead of 5 quotes per request, they now present 16 plus. In my field, this is overwhelming. I have received less quotes and no results. This is a shame because they were such a great business model for me in the past. I call customer service once a week. They are open to my views, but nothing has changed. What a shame. They used to be a main part of my business.

I recently signed up for Thumbtack, a credit based referral service, that promises to grow your business through online referrals from quotes that you deliver to customers. You pay for some quotes and some are free. However, the few times that I’ve booked appointments to see clients, they never show up. This service will only provide you with time wasting quotes that lead to bad referrals and window shoppers.
If you are trying to run a serious referral based business, look elsewhere for those referrals. You will waste a lot of time quoting these customers and get nothing in return. Thumbtack should change their business model to something that protects the professionals who use this service from customers who are price hunting. Perhaps a listing of pros and a fixed general quote for most jobs so that customers can get a feel for what the pricing is before they waste the time of a given pro with a needless general quote. I would not recommend Thumbtack to anyone! Avoid this company!

I was a member of this so-called lead generating service and in 3 years out of about 2500 so-called leads and only 7 real jobs. My experience is terrible. THUMBTACK has an integrity issue. It is typical for the contractor to pay for lead that says something nebulous like Patty ** wants a bid on new windows. Upon paying for the lead they give you nothing. In my experience most of the ones I pay for do not get a last name, an address, a phone number, an email, kik- absolutely nothing. When I ask them about it over the years they always say the homeowner did not leave the information.
Folks I have been in business 30 years. Now what kind of potential customer looking for a service does not leave contact info? I will tell you what kind, it is one that is non-existent. My guess is THUMBTACK is generating revenues on fake customers. This sounds like fraud to me. I encourage any Service Pro who has similar experiences to contact your state's Attorney General and ask that they investigate this shady company.

I used Thumbtack for 1 year with success 2016-2017. At the end of 2017, Thumbtack made a change to allow up to 15 pros to quote a customer. 15! It used to be 5, and you would pay anywhere from $10-$15 for a customer to view your quote. Now you pay the same amount with 3X the vendors. Also upon opening my account back up at the end of 2017, I realized it will show 0 pros have quoted a customer and then after you quote it says 5-8 pros contacted the customer (sometimes on day old requests). SO... They lied about contacts to get me to pay the money for the quote and then told the truth. FINALLY, I literally just had a DJ quote a customer in the $200 range for a 6 hour Detroit wedding. As time went on I started to notice a trend that so many others have already mentioned, which is that many if not all of the requests I respond to appear to be fake. I continually get customers that are well outside my travel distance, as well as customers who use the exact same response, only to never to be heard from again.
It had never crossed my mind that Thumbtack themselves might be the ones generating the false leads. This was until they implemented their new format which charges the pro automatically as soon as a customer responds. They have charged me dozens of times regardless of any further communication from the customer, or if I am hired or not. Lastly, when I have called to dispute these charges Thumbtack has always sided with the customer and has argued with me, despite the fact that I am the one paying them! They just changed their payment method and price structure so the cost of trying to get a job just went up. They have no way of telling you how much you paid quarterly or even annually so one doesn't even really know the true cost to do business. Quote based websites are a rip off. I used to love Thumbtack until I logged into my account one day and realized I was competing with 10 other pros for 1 lead that cost me $20.04. At first they only allowed 5 quotes per lead which is manageable but 11 is outrageous. Here's the issue with that. I'm an established business owner just looking for some extra work here and there so I don't have the time to stare at an app in my phone so I can get the notification and put in the first quote. But unfortunately there are a lot of little start up and new subcontractors that gave nothing better to do with their time so I don't have a chance and Thumbtack doesn't let you know how many people bid until you pay for the lead which is a monopoly situation because if you don't bid you have no chance and if you do bid and you're not first then 10 other guys already spoke to the customer and have an appointment for tomorrow morning.
And then to top it off the customer out of curiosity opens the email with my quote knowing they have no intention of speaking to me and boom there goes my hard earned $20 just like that. So as much as I did love this service I now have to say there are many less competitive options such as HomeAdvisor where only 3 bids are allowed and contact is guaranteed.

We have been a Thumbtack client for more than 24 months, spending thousands of dollars paying for leads and thought we had a good working relationship. We recently received an email stating that they received a complaint from a customer and we would have to go to arbitration to resolve. They cancelled our account and did not provide a specific reason other than referring to their terms and conditions. We had more than 40 positive reviews on this site and referred many of our potential clients to this site. As a business owner, you are aware that reviews cost time, money and very difficult to get clients to post reviews. Their response to our request for more information as to why they would not reinstate the account is as follows:
“Thank you for that. As my email to Al stated, there are a variety of factors we take into account when making this choice. While we do not disclose specifics, I will do my best to explain the process. When we make the decision to permanently remove an account, we may base that choice upon some of the following: reviews on and off Thumbtack, publicly searchable information, quoting habits, messaging with customers, and any other information we find to be relevant. This is not a step that is taken without serious consideration. Though we do not like to, our Terms provide us with the ability to make this decision at any time. I understand this may be disappointing and I apologize to you both for any inconvenience this may cause. However, we are not confident that Thumbtack and ** are a good fit. We will not disclose any more specific information as to our decision making process. However, I am available to answer any final questions that you may have.”
As a business owner, I would recommend you do NOT use this site as they are expensive, do not screen their customers and in my opinion, probably request bogus work request themselves to generate revenue. There might be grounds for legal action and will be seeking advise from our legal counsel. In the meantime, there are other, more reputable site you can use to grow your business.

All coming in within hours of each other such as Sheila, Selma, Shelly, Simon, Shokia, Sonita... Seriously? What are the odds, right? Then, the other trick is bidding on a quote and then two minutes later the request was deleted, but not before they viewed my quote. I'm out the $16. I too have bid on jobs that I later saw re-posted after saying they weren't available with similar names but other parts of the job had changed. This happened many times. As a pro on Thumbtack.com I will never spend a dime on this site again. They don't tell homeowners before they fill out a request that although its free for them it cost us pros quite a bit of dollars to send them a quote. I recently inquired about $13.36 I spent sending a quote and so did 4 other contractors and then the customer cancelled the project altogether. I was wondering where my refund was since the homeowner canceled and to my surprise I was told that Thumbtack has decided to move forward and will no longer be refunding pros any money spent on customers who cancel a project. This means that Thumbtack basically stole a total $66.80 from pros who sent quotes in return for nothing. I can understand if they hired one of the other pros to do the work because they like that pros reviews and price more but to cancel altogether and screw us out of our money.
So what happens when and if I spend $26.00 on 10 different quotes and they all cancel after getting 5 quotes. That's $260.00 from my pocket I don't get back and if 4 other pros also send a quote to those same homeowners Thumbtack just pocketed $1,300.00 from 5 pros that didn't even get to talk to the homeowner. This is just one of several issues that Thumbtack has when it comes to making it better for the pros. They haven't called me back. As I was told a month ago I would get a phone call within 2-4 business days. 4 other people have said they would look into this call I never received and still I have received no phone calls.
Thumbtack does not care about the pro who make them successful and are the ones responsible for making them a business and keeping them in business. Well this is the last time you ** ME OVER. I've spent too much money on here and although it was ok but no matter how much feedback I gave on how to improve their site or categories say for painting, nothing good has been implemented and all they do is take more money from the pros and keep screwing us. The homeowners should be paying to get the top pros with 53 five star ratings as I do. Trust me pros, they don't care like they say they do or changes to make it better for us would have happened and they just don't because they truly just don't care. YOU SUCK THUMBTACK.COM

Seems like a legitimate opportunity for artists, and photographers to try and obtain leads for potential jobs or freelance bids. You create a profile and pay for bids on customers who need your service. The bids can range from $2.00 to up to $7.00. Thumbtack gets the money for these bids. This is money I paid to obtain a hired status. I had at least 6 or 7 people who stated me as "marked as hired." This means I will work with them on their photography project. The problem is, only one of the 7 customers contacted me so far for setting up a photo shoot. But this customer says they will contact me after Thanksgiving. After chatting with customer service agents from Thumbtack, they say they have no way of knowing if the customer is real. Yet they require us artists to create a profile and have a background check done.
So these customers who tagged me as 'marked for hire' may not be real customers. I told Thumbtack that they need to verify these people to see if they are legit. If not, I'll get a refund. Right now, I do not trust Thumbtack since they have NO way to verify if a customer is real. I told them, "Make them pay a fee if they fail to respond or fail to follow through with contacting the artist." They said that was a good idea but I doubt it will happen. I will contact the one customer who has responded to me to see if they are legit. I do not trust this company.

When I purchased an investment property in June of 2017, I discovered undisclosed water penetration damage that had resulted in mold growth. This clearly had been going on for some years due to a leaking roof (replaced shortly before sale) and leaking plumbing throughout, that my home inspector did not note in his report. I only found all these when I opened walls. Upon discovery, I started looking around the internet for solutions. The first site I stumbled upon was Thumbtack, with one or two contractors selling their professional services as "mold remediators". Both had 15-25 or so positive reviews from customers, so I contacted them to have them give me a quote. I must also explain here that I was a complete novice, never having had anything like this to deal with before.
I made appointments with the two different contractors from Thumbtack, who both came out, and who both said that for clean up I was looking at around $10,000. Both of them also told me that they were licensed mold inspectors. In the meantime, I called a friend who had mold issues much worse than mine, and asked what she had done. She put me in touch with the professional remediation company that she had used, who connected me with a professional mold inspector, saying that was the first thing to do. Have the mold inspected and tested. Both of these people spent a good hour with me on the phone, explaining all the ins and outs of mold. Number one, was that mold inspectors are never allowed to do the remediation themselves, that it was a conflict of interest, and if they are offering clean up services as well, they would lose their licenses.
When I researched both of the Thumbtack people, I found out that one actually ran an HVAC business. The other, I could only find an address of a house registered to his business and name, and the business had existed only for about 4 years. He had told me that he’d been in the mold remediation business for upwards of 15 years. He kept calling me to find out when I was going to give him the go ahead, to pay him the $10,000 to start cleaning my house. Instead, I made an appointment with the referred licensed mold inspector from the remediation company that my friend had used. Because I was sending a demand letter to my seller for non-disclosure, I was needing documentation.
The inspector came and did all the tests for $450. He did not discover more than 25 square feet contiguous mold, which is the prerequisite for having to hire a professional remediation firm. Because it was less, we could hire who we wanted to do the clean up. And both he and the person from the remediation company had thoroughly explained to me what the cleaning process would be, and what materials/chemicals would be needed. So we were able to take care of everything ourselves. In the meantime, I’d gotten a phone call from the Thumbtack HVAC guy, backpedaling, and telling me that he was withdrawing his offer, saying that it was looking like it might be more than 25sf of mold, that he’d been trying to do me a favor, but that he could now get into trouble, and that he was no longer interested in doing it. The other guy eventually stopped calling me, but I want to make sure that no one else falls for this mold removal scam.
And this is my complaint about Thumbtack - anyone can say anything about who they are and what they do there, and ask for any amount of money they want to do whatever it is. The mold scam especially is prevalent right now everywhere. But anyone needing contractual services of any kind, should do their homework before agreeing to any offers from Thumbtack’s site. It is full of dilettantes just trying to make a buck from unsuspecting homeowners.

I provided a 3-star review on another site because I wanted to give Thumbtack the benefit of the doubt. I feel that as a platform for service providers to offer services to customers, Thumbtack has pros and cons. In my experience, I was able to expand my market nationwide when we decided to take our service online. Over time, I developed referrals from my Thumbtack clients. So, I'd receive calls from people who were told about my services by my other Thumbtack clients. Most of the time, you have to start fresh though. Fortunately, most of my clients come from referrals from my large network of prior clients and educators who know my work.
Frankly, it took a long time to get started on Thumbtack. If you don't bring in reviews from the outside, customers will not take a chance in most cases, no matter how good you are at what you do. Most service providers do not want to send current or recent customers to a platform for finding other service providers. When I started, there was little or no helpful information about how to get past this barrier. I just kept spending money without getting results. It literally took months to get my first customer on Thumbtack.
As for the money I've spent on quotes, I've made more than I've spent by far, but the many, many hours of monitoring the requests without being able to see what other providers are saying or presenting have been very wasteful. It really doesn't matter how good you are at providing your service if you're not selling better than other providers. In my business, many companies are scammy and essentially train customers to expect certain things that will not help them reach their goals. So, sales may be more important than quality when selling on Thumbtack.
While I racked up a string of 5-star reviews, a weakness in Thumbtack's review system stopped my Thumbtack business cold. Why? I hesitantly accepted a client who showed red flags for being difficult to work with. I take responsibility for the fact that I accepted that client. In my defense, I carefully explained our system, our written agreement, and so on. I made it clear to this client where I was concerned about the difference between how we work and what I thought they might want instead. They insisted they were happy with my way of working.
However, as soon as they paid and I set up their services, they became extremely difficult to work with. While they admitted repeatedly that the service provided was as stated and excellent, they repeatedly harassed me with demands of a significant amount of free service. They had no justification for these demands except that their culture considers the contract just the start and that it's expected that more be given. The person was born here in the U.S., is a young adult, and is well educated. They knew better, and I'd told them point blank before taking their business that they had a below market rate and that I could not provide additional perks.
Well, that customer contacted me dozens of times, sometimes calling several times in a row while I worked with other clients and sometimes calling late at night repeatedly. They refused to put their demands in writing but would only make them on the phone. Their contract stated that they had a streamlined communication system requiring that email be used except in rare cases where a recorded phone call could be scheduled.
That customer waited a month after I completed the service and then posted an anonymous, false, very long, hostile review, admitting that the service was good but presenting objectively false stories. For example, though the customer did not participate in scheduling, she said my scheduling system was a "nightmare." Her younger sister did the scheduling with us, and she said repeatedly that it was "good" and that it was "less stressful" than other systems because she had guaranteed times that were according to her own schedule.
The customer also strongly implied that I was nice before she paid and unkind afterward. In reality, I was kind and patient with her at all times and told her before she paid that I could not answer phone calls at random times because I'd be working with students and don't work 24 hours a day. I asked her point blank if she could work with my system.
So, when I brought this to Thumbtack's attention, all they did was verify that their review system was working as designed. Some of the reps I tried to work this out with did ask questions in the company or ask if I could give them an email where she referred to her blackmail threat that she'd give me a bad review if I didn't give her free time to "respect her culture," however the customer was very careful not to put that in writing. She was, in fact, enraged that I followed my communication plan as agreed verbally and in writing.
I asked Thumbtack to look at the multiple red flags and hide that review. The statements made in it contradicted all of my other reviews. It was anonymous. It was delayed. She used a fake name for her sister. I had been unable to see this customer's history on their website. But, Thumbtack refused. The review dominates my review page. Thumbtack actually did not have my response showing for two weeks, and so it appeared to customers as though I'd not responded at all. In compensation, they gave me $13. I lost thousands in business during that time.
I suggested to Thumbtack that they allow service providers to review customers the way Lyft does and to hide reviews with multiple red flags and allow them to be submitted for evaluation. Thumbtack refused, telling me to just bury the false review with new reviews. With no customers being willing to overlook that slanderous review and not being interested in sending my regular customers offsite to Thumbtack, I have no choice but to delete my account with Thumbtack. I gave them even more of a chance and spent another hundred dollars or so quoting, but with zero bites, unlike before.
I spent two years and more money than I have ever spent for marketing in other ways on Thumbtack. Now, I'm cutting a significant loss. Frankly, the loss is more for my time than the money. Thumbtack must take responsibility for establishing accountability in their review system. They want customers to leave reviews, as is appropriate, but without responsible filters and evaluations for anything other than profanity, the empower those very few customers who are unstable and/or toxic to cause thousands in losses or high-quality service providers.
While one can avoid some of this by being super cautious about which customers you take, Thumbtack should know better than to provide no accountability systems. Nobody can consistently weed out potentially toxic customers, and Thumbtack owes a degree of loyalty to the people who pay their salaries. If they believe that my customers deserve a voice, why don't they believe that their customers deserve a voice? Simply allowing a (2 weeks delayed) response to a malicious false response from a blackmailing customer is not enough.
I've tried to be fair to Thumbtack in this review. One can make money using Thumbtack. The customer service staff is polite. However, the company lacks competent, effective small business support and a focus on mutual accountability in reviews. Failing to correct these weaknesses allows dishonest service providers and customers to abuse the system and abuses honest service providers and customers by reducing the trustworthiness of all communications accessible to customers and service providers. It hurts the good guys and helps that small number of people who seek to abuse their system.

We get pretty decent amount of work and I would say about 20% of the work is from the internet as opposed to local networking through BNI, church, and the community in general. I use a couple of sites and must say that Thumbtack is absolutely garbage. I purchased $60.00 worth of credit a year and a half ago. I have responded with the same generic message I used on Upwork and other sites (that I actually get a response from). I seriously believe that they make fake leads. All other websites in regards to gaining business, I get responses and communication to. But Thumbtack, I send the quote. A few minutes later it is viewed, and then I hear nothing. At worst, this is a scam company that makes up jobs so people will spend money on their credits. At best, it is a terrible, terrible place to do business through. Either way it deserves less than 1 star. Seriously, so many quotes sent and only 1 person responded. Thumbtack started out as a great idea. It had people that responded on the business side. For example, a cleaning company set up a scam site designed to lift their ratings with Thumbtack. They were a total fraud, complete with stealing from my home. The people at Thumbtack were very quick to remove the fraudulent company. Now, instead of checking companies out before allowing a listing; they have a whole new section of legalese instructing the customer to do a thorough background check, including a criminal background check on any potential business. Any internet company that advertises itself as a "go-to" company for hiring pros should have some standards. Thumbtack has gone backwards in this respect.
Should you choose to hired anyone via Thumbtack; use it as a last resort. They are not registered with the BBB. That is a sign of concern given how good they started out. Failure to maintain quality is a good reason for business failure. I really used to love Thumbtack and I promoted it for my friends. Thumbtack has just given me a big raspberry for supporting their services. I still list jobs on their site; but I don't take all respondents seriously. More than 1/2 are scam artists and Thumbtack supports those businesses. I have also noticed they do not keep their computer programs up to date. As a quality video producer, I have had one quality job come from Thumbtack but have been incredibly disappointed in the bidding process. Very simply, the format does not provide enough information from the buyer to create a bid that can be stuck to. If a consumer is in need of a low price and does not care about experience, quality, or an honest estimate, Thumbtack is the place to look.

I have been with Thumbtack for a while now and I am finally giving up. They made it worse with showing us now how much each quote cost that we are sending in and yes they claim to only charge your card if the customer responds and that is not true. They still will charge you. To be honest spending over $15 to send a quote and not guaranteed of the customer will contact you or not is very frustrating. I wish Thumbtack would be shut down at times or they change their practices. We should not be paying to send quotes and then get no response at all. Just a email when they look at it and sometimes that is wrong. They will also say someone looked at your quote and they really didn't. I have caught this at least ten times already with customers who have told me they never looked at our quote. They just did a search on Google and found us anyways without the help of Thumbtack.
I wish people would see they are scamming a nation and taking from those who want to be private contractors. They need Jesus in their lives. That's how bad this company is. They never resolve any issues so you will get screwed whether you are a customer or a pro because I needed to hire someone to do some work for us and let me tell you if you get screwed call them to get your money back then that's it. You were flat out ROBBED in your own home. It is very frightening and scary that there is a system like this to steal from innocent people who have families to support. Oh and any updates they make they never tell you in their terms and conditions. They state they are required to tell us in email but for the past two years I have never seen a email with updated changes.
People stop being cheap and use Google instead of Thumbtack. You will be screwed both pros and customers. Look at all these reviews. They are clearly true and warning America of this scam Thumbtack has run and claiming they help change lives but they really don't. If you read this then that means you should take this warning seriously. I didn't and still decided to do business with them and look where it got us. On here leaving a review about the hell we went through and how it really took a toll on my family and our finances. Robbing us constantly and providing us with false hope.

I've been dealing with Thumbtack for a year or two as part of their standard quoting services that matches customers with local professionals. I am a massage therapist. A customer places a request for a service, Thumbtack sends the request to a number of professionals. The first 5 professionals bid on the job and they close the request to other professional. We buy credits which are deducted per quote. I landed 2 or 3 in the couple years I participated. They recently implemented Thumbtack Pro. You buy the credits and your quotes are sent for free immediately upon request. Credits are deducted only when a customer contacts you. I prepared (per Thumbtacks suggestion) my template to create my quote and add an attachment etc to be sent with each request.
In about 3 months I landed about 5 jobs. Then Thumbtack announced they will send their own responses because their research showed that people are only interested in certain information in your profile. The response they send is flatly, "This quote includes 60 minute Swedish Massage. Purposes: For the purposes of relaxation." In my opinion their response looks lazy and uncaring and does not address all the issues stated in the request. The customer does not receive my detailed response. So they are forced to contact me for more information which prompts credits to be deducted from my account. Thumbtack is not my authorized business representative and has no right to alter my response and send their own in its place.
I feel that there is a conflict of interest too. Because they are making money off of my depleting credits that are encouraged from the ineffective response they are sending. They have credited me many of the short responses after I complained. However continued to send the short responses. They basically said they would send my suggestions to their Thumbtack Pro team. But if I don't like how they are running Thumbtack Pro, discontinue it and just do the basic option that deducts credits for every quote sent, which does not produce much business at all.

I have never gotten a response from any bid and don't know if the person actually exists because the only information you get is a first name and last initial. My suspicion is these jobs do not exist and it's Thumbtack posting the jobs to collect money from people buying GN points to bid. You don't get your points back if you don't receive an answer.

Do Not Trust This Company. We hired a professional by using Thumbtack's website, which gave us "peace of mind" when it stated that they have a guarantee that protects the clients from damages caused by a professional hired on their website. Their website's set up is that for the client to believe that their professionals stand above the rest. That proved to be untrue in our case, when we hired a professional with fictitious recommendations and claims to have been in the handyman industry for many years.
The work performed in our home by Thumbtack's service member, left us with having to redo everything he was hired to do as he had no apparent craftsmanship in the installation of floors or bathroom vanities. He butchered the back of our vanity and hammered floors down that only required to be clicked in place. All the floor seal snaps were hammered and broken, which allowed water to penetrate floors. We followed every single step required by Thumbtack to show evidence and proof of incurred damages. This included receipts, cashed checks by the pro and pictures. We understood that their guarantee policy is to only cover for damages in the case that the professional does not reimburse the client. Our hired professional refused to accept any responsibility for his negligence that caused the damages. This dispute has now taken five solid months of numerous emails.
When we all finally came to an agreement of payment to be made to us using the Thumbtack's Guarantee to cover our damages, it went back to more emails, yet requesting more proof and evidence of things they had already reviewed. The latest request from Thumbtack was for us to provide them with the telephone number of the person that helped us remove the damages caused, so that we could get the work redone. This is after Thumbtack had already accepted our receipts for Lowe's, Home Depot and hand written receipt of damages removal and the copy of the bank cashed check that was given to the person that did this small removal job.
This request to obtain a phone number to call and confirm the work done was just unacceptable to us (very disrespectful) and it seemed as a way to keep prolonging a payout. Please stay away from this company's "guarantee" facade and do read the small print that prohibits you from filing any type of class action suit. Basically if anything goes wrong with your project, you lose.

"Marketplace Integrity Team" is another whopper and "professional". We received a terrible paint job on a small section of new drywall at floor level, even after we agreed to $300 and had to pay $500 to get them to finish the job. Then the color was wrong. All the way to the ceiling. And on the adjacent wall. Their "Marketplace Integrity Team" representative explained to me how the work is not in fact guaranteed at all. Instead, it says they agree to accept liability for damages they cause outside of the scope of the work they're hired to do. What they're really saying is they have liability insurance.
Somehow the Better Business Bureau accepted this being characterized as a guarantee in Feb 2017. Shame on them too. Our complaint was escalated to Lindsay, a "Marketplace Integrity Team" manager, who displayed no integrity at all in trying to convince me we hadn't been damaged. She assured me they would have covered damage if there had been paint left on the carpet, but when I asked how a damaged carpet differed from two damaged walls all the way to the ceiling which now have to be repainted, she had no explanation other than I was too dim to understand. This company isn't worth wasting your time on. They give you a false illusion that contractors are vetted and that they protect you if there's a problem. You would most certainly have better success trying out a new unknown contractor and paying him only upon successful completion of the job.

I was using Thumbtack to generate leads and elected to use the "pay as you go" option instead of the "reload billing" option. I called Thumbtack customer service and requested they turn off the reload function and was told twice (2 separate times) that it was off. Yesterday I checked my credit card and saw a billing for $848.00 from Thumbtack, when I called to figure out what happened we were told that their system automatically defaults to the "reload" function unless it is disabled in settings. The customer service rep said that they (Thumbtack) didn't execute the request properly (admitting that it was their fault), however they would not be able to refund the charge.
It's an unscrupulous business practice to make a systematic error, and then do nothing to resolve the issue or refund the charge. We recorded the phone conversation with the representative where there was an absolute admittance of error on their part - and then I ask myself, if the employees can't figure out the Thumbtack billing system how can the end user truly protect themselves. The reason why we recorded the conversation was in an effort to prove to the credit card company that their charge was erroneous, but also to use it as evidence in small claims court.

The majority of requests are unrealistic and they all appear to have the same exact responses to the quote request. The potential customers should at the very least be made to have contact with those of us providing quotes before it can be considered a qualified lead or if someone gets the job, the rest should get their credits back. When you pay for a lead, 4 others are also paying DumbTack for the lead.
