Andres and his father are wonderful communicators. Their care and quality of work is high. Their workers are efficient and clean up was excellent. I have no hesitation in recommending their service. Quote came in the morning and the work was completed that same afternoon. Can't beat that!

I'm in the computer repair business and I signed up as a pro on Thumbtack in mid 2013. I joined just to give it a shot and to make some extra money. Most of my business comes via word of mouth and from people searching on Google. I did well with Thumbtack from 2013 - late 2017. I was hired over 160 times and I had a 4.8 star rating with over 70 reviews. I would buy 30 credits every two months or so and I was getting about 3 jobs a month pretty consistently. In late 2017 I started getting emails about instant match and I read up on how it worked. I didn't like it so I never enabled it.

For my line of work I need to personally view the request and decide if I want to quote on the job and if I want to charge by the hour or flat rate. I didn't want Thumbtack forcing me to flat rate everything and making decisions for me on what to quote on. So I stuck with the old system, it worked well for me. I noticed around March of 2018 fewer and fewer requests were coming in, to the point where there were zero requests coming in. I thought this was very odd. I suspected pros who had instant match enabled were getting preferential treatment and getting the requests because the timing of all this coincided with the rollout of instant match.

I called a few times to ask them about this and they assured me that wasn't the case but couldn't tell me why after 5 years the requests suddenly dried up. Something stunk. I was told by a Thumbtack CS rep. on the phone in early 2018 about the new "pay if contacted" system that is now currently in place. I told him back then, several months before it was implemented, that it sounded like a train wreck. I went through a list of reasons as to why I thought that. I recall him even saying, and I'm paraphrasing, "pros may have sticker shock when we roll this out". Guess what? It's here and it's a train wreck and the pros have sticker shock.

On the old system most quotes in my field of work were 2 credits. So if I recall correctly I was paying $3.34 per quote. If I got the job, great, if I didn't it was $3.34 out of my pocket and the customer still had my contact information. Now for the same range of jobs I need to pay $7.79 to upwards of $35 per quote if somebody decides to "contact me" i.e... send me a message to ask a question or just waste my time, or call me, even if I don't pick up the phone and they never talk to me or they don't leave a voicemail. Keep in mind I may only make $60 on some jobs, IF I GET THE JOB, so $7.79 - $40 per "contact" is large chunk of change to me, it quickly adds up, especially if I don't get hired. If I were doing mostly $500 jobs I wouldn't feel it as much. I simply can't afford to be charged those rates.

One last thing, somebody else mentioned that Thumbtack sent a response to a client on the pro's behalf. I had this happen to me about a month ago. I got what I thought was a message from a possible client via the Thumbtack phone app saying they were interested in hiring me and wanted to know how to proceed. There was something weird about it and I held off responding. I later checked my account on my computer and I didn't see this message. What I saw was a message from Thumbtack saying something like "so and so checked your profile out, send them a message". Then I saw a message sent to that person from my account that I never sent.

I called them up and I was like, "WTF is going on?" The person on the phone started babbling about their automated response system or some ridiculous thing and I was charged .79 cents. It was an automated message Thumbtack sent out on my behalf. I told him to refund the amount and that I don't want them to ever send a message to somebody on my behalf ever again. Basically they were trying to force an interaction between myself and somebody who happened to look at my profile. That person never really contacted me. Something very strange is going on with this company and I will no longer be dealing with them. It really is a shame because I had a very good run with them when things were simple. I buy credits, I decide who I want to send a quote to, if they view my quote, the credits are deducted. Straightforward, it worked well. I have to hand it to them, they tanked their entire company within a year. Way to go.

I recently signed up my business through Thumbtack and was billed a $39 annual charge that I was not informed of and also sent a quote, received a short response and was billed $31.82 just for the response. I personally think that’s a rip off being billed before even getting the job. They are all about the money.

Like all the other people are saying, Something is not right here. There are too many problems to name. This Site is doing more harm than good in the world and something needs to happen. Where are the FTC or the BBB on this? Thumbtack is stealing from people and hurting a ton of businesses. We received a request for Home cleaning and the quote cost was for $23+. The customer contacted all 15 pros and never hired anyone of the 15 for the job by the way. So Thumbtack made nearly 400 dollars off of 15 different persons and no job was ever completed at all. Somebody needs to investigate. Now and not later. Change needs to happen Now.

I spoke with the accounting department at Thumbtack today regarding my service plan after looking at funds being drawn from my bank for their service. I notice that the amount was different every time when I respond to a potential client. I have a business providing background checks and of course our rates are the same no matter where clients are calling from.

Well after talking with Thumbtack accounting this is what he explained to me. I was being charged more depending on 3 criteria, 1. Location: If a client is from out of state Thumbtack charges you more. 2. Demographics: Depending on how many other Professional's in your area Thumback will charge you more. In other words, the more businesses in your area with similar services Thumbtack will charge your more. If there are fewer similar business they still charge you the same rate! So here's the catch, the more similar businesses on Thumbtack the higher the rate and the more money Thumbtack make. 3. Thumbtack was charging me an average of $11.13 per message even if a customer just wanted to know what my rates were. That's $11.13 per message people not new clients. Hell I can do that with email for free!

Thumbtack is like Attorneys, they take your money just if someone has a question. Most customers on Thumbtack are just "inquiring" about service, that doesn't mean they will hire you. I was paying Thumbtack an average of $80 a week just answer questions. Thumbtack will not share this information unless you look up how much your fees will be beforehand. They're like Insurance companies, they'll take your money but it will be guarantee results if anything will happen. I'm surprised they are still in business. Don't waste your money on this company!

I hired a "Pro" through Thumbtack. The "Pro" turned out to be a scam artist who would take your deposit and disappear. Thumbtack does not check their pros and it is easy to for scammers to create fake positive reviews. Myself and another consumer posted a review on the "Pro" within minutes of each other, victims of the same scam. Thumbtack removed the"Pro" and the reviews, effectively hiding the evidence that it is happening there. Thumbtack is very effective at bringing consumers to scammers.

I second everything that other Pros are saying in these reviews. Being charged for being "hired" even though you haven't spoken with that person let alone been hired. I got a refund when that happened but they took months. I get very few usable leads and the last straw for me was when I turned on Instant Match and got charged all kinds of money for being "properly introduced" to a potential client. That equated to the person viewing my profile, even if I wasn't interested in them and never contacted them via the Thumbtack chat service. If I had actually quoted the person personally that would be one thing but when I'm dismissing most of these referrals and not making any contact I don't know why I'm being charged (they tried to explain but I am not satisfied with their response).

Also, as others have said, their pricing doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason other than you tell them how much you're willing to spend for leads per month and they try to make sure they find a way to charge you that. Even when you aren't getting good leads or aren't making contact with the people. I think I've gotten a total of two clients the entire time I've been on Thumbtack (several years). Stay away. Pay for Google ads, Facebook ads, word of mouth, etc.

The contractor gave a quote and asked for deposit before job even started. Trusting that Thumbtack would have screened all their recommended contractors, I agreed to the deposit. I included my price for home staging in my emails. I got calls from the ‘supposed’ client asking the price. Immediately after Thumbtack charged me $45.00. A potential client ask me a question and I was charged $30 for the lead. If I was hired, I wouldn't have a problem paying the $30... but for a lead??? I also question the validity of these so called leads. I will guarantee that some of the leads are generated by Thumbtack and are BS. I gave them a second chance and they changed the pricing again, making it not affordable and basically screwing pros over. Extremely disgusted.

I have been a pro with them for years and generated a lot of income in the past... then they came out with a new system where the pro pays when they are contacted. My success rate drop beyond measure. I swear it is Thumbtack sending us messages just to increase their bottom line! They need the have a verification process on their customers, just like they do with the Pro's, so the Pro's know they are dealing with legit customers. There is no need for a customer to get 15 Pro's contacting them; and the customer reaches out to 10 or more of the Pro with a 'What's Next?' bot reply. Each charging the pro a fee meaning Thumbtack is then making more than the pro on the job.

I smell a class action lawsuit in the making. What an easy way for a company to make money... just charge all of their pro's for a contact. Have 10-12 people sit in the back room and say 'What's next?'... and not a single reply after when the Pro takes the time to respond as they just paid 30-70 for the message. Brilliant until they are caught. Bet they will be losing a lot of Pro's in the coming months.

I used to love Thumbtack. 2 companies I have worked for used Thumbtack and my old construction company did as well. I started a new construction company and set everything up earlier in 2018, right when Thumbtack started changing from a credits to its new way of charging the pros. First few bids go through no problem, few jobs, everything's good. Then I get a $75 dollar charge for a bathroom remodel because the customer asked "Do you have any references". I responded within minutes that I do and I have several reviews on Thumbtack, Facebook, Google and give many more. The customer never read my response, never responded or did anything on Thumbtack again. I sent the "needs more information" bid because all it was saying was bathroom remodel. No price ranges or anything were offered, no details as to the remodeling or timeline.

I have experience this problem with a different better known lead provider and didn't want to have 10 of these "responses" hit me on the same day so I stopped sending any bids. I wait several weeks (to make sure nothing updated with the customer I never got to talk to) and contacted Thumbtack. When this happens with other lead services normally they will try to work with me and maybe credit some of the charge back if I can show there was not enough contact to have either myself or the customer make any decisions or chances to bid. But Thumbtack says there is nothing they can do and I have to pay the $75 dollars if I want to continue using Thumbtack.

I pointed out that there was no indication of a price range for the lead itself when I sent this, like there currently is. I pointed out that the customer didn't read the message or log back into thumbtack after sending me the 5 word email. They just repeated they can't do anything about it. My advice is to stay away, if you budget for any leads go somewhere else.

Every time I respond to a request I pay 45 to 70 dollars and get no business? This use to be a lead generating service and I would get a certain amount of business based on how many quotes I submitted that ran around 4 to 8 dollars a quote. I thought that was a little high but ok. But now I get almost no leads and when I get one it cost a huge price yes to answer the question Are you available. I have been using Thumbtack as a pro for over a year. I own a house cleaning business and have spent a good sum of money with Thumbtack. When I started using Thumbtack, everyone wrote their own quotes and sent them. It wasn’t long until they introduced instant match. This is where they will get you. If you don’t use instant match, you rarely get the jobs because your quote is slower than the instant quotes. If you use instant match, you have zero chance to read the job request and decide if you want the job. They have this cute little button at the bottom that says DECLINE, but you’re actually not allowed to use this button.

I have declined on several jobs and was charged anyway because they deemed it a valid match. Why is there a decline button if you aren’t allowed to use it. This makes zero sense. I have become very disappointed with this company because they’ve gotten very greedy and give business owners no power over what they want to accept or decline. I will no longer be using Thumbtack. For one, the charges are OUTRAGEOUS considering they are based on a customer being able to simply click a quick response and BOOM, the pro is charged. For two, availability options are limited to choosing the same hours for the entire week, rather than hours of availability PER DAY, as it is quite ridiculous to expect Pros to have the SAME schedule 7 days per week. I signed up for Thumbtack years ago and deposited money to send quotes as a real estate agent. Despite many attempts and a strongly rated profile through the site, I've never received any business by using this service. The market is over-saturated, so there is not a reasonable amount of time to send a quote, and when you do they are mostly ignored by the customer. That is not my primary complaint with this service though. My main issue was when I tried to withdraw my balance, because the service was ineffective. Deep down in the terms of service, it states that the money you deposit for "credits" is non-refundable. So no matter how ineffective the service is, your money is no longer your money. Any other respectable business provides refunds for services/products not used, or defective services/products. Not Thumbtack apparently, and when I contacted customer service, their solution was to tell me to "send quotes".

Another thing, if you don't know to comb through all of their advance settings, it defaults your account to send you emails about related services outside of the ones you selected. So, not only is it ineffective, it spams your email account with 95% junk that is unrelated to why you signed up in the first place. It's no wonder this company has a 1 star review on Consumer Affairs.

Updated on 11/04/2018: **Thumbtack seems to be "Under Construction"** When a business is "Under Construction" Isn't that business supposed to shut down until all is fixed? And, not make money during all the many trial/errors along the way? I feel like a Thumbtack "Guinea Pig!" Thumbtack is constantly making changes that are unhealthy to small business owners like me. The changes are convoluted with many confusing layers. Pricing has become over-the-top and makes no sense at all!

The form that a potential customer fills out via Thumbtack is lacking vital information and does not conform correctly to each individual small business like mine.

I have a pre-written quote that used to be sent to prospective customers via Thumbtack... but now Thumbtack "Leaves Out" all the important data a prospective customer would need to know before we reach out to each other!!!

Thumbtack recently completed what they called a "Survey" and "Used" the responses they received from the huge amount of pros that responded to the "Survey" and, 99% of the feedback was negative to the point of embarrassment! NOTHING THAT ME OR ANY OF THE OTHER Pros complained about or suggested were taken into consideration. Thumbtack asked for my input but it fell on deaf ears! I have been using Thumbtack with great success until close to 2 years ago. Now I am on the edge of leaving the site. :(

Thumbtack support insists all leads are real... But there is no proof of it! I receive no contact information from the leads I reach out to. I reach out/respond to leads and never hear back from them! Every other day prices of leads change. Why? More trial/error... Something weird is going on at Thumbtack and this makes me sad, disappointed and frustrated.

Original: I wanted to know how and why after sending a quote people are asking questions that I include in my quote to them... The following response was sent to me by a Thumbtack support person. "Our platform currently does not allow us to send more information in the initial quote, which was the first quote you were seeing in your messages with the price. You would have to manually send a follow up message to the customer with your personalized template that you created with your prices, discounts, etc." "We are constantly changing and take Pro's feedback into account. If you'd like, I can submit your thoughts regarding this." So everyone as you can see this is how Thumbtack sneaks in the ability to charge all of us pros. The person looking to hire you has to ask questions that we give them but Thumbtack deletes from the quote you sent... IN WHICH THUMBTACK CHARGES YOU AN ARM AND A LEG!!!

Unfortunately, after utilizing Thumbtack for nearly a year, making TOP Pro status, and spending over 6.5k; I was rewarded with a threating email from Thumbtack marketplace customer service. This email stated that I received a negative review. I was to refund this customer despite the fact that this customer was telling untruths and despite the fact I told the Thumbtack customer service rep the entire issue I was still threatened with "action on my account" despite the harm this could potentially cause to the clients that had already paid their deposit and weddings were coming up. I also had my TOP pro status revoked. Proof of the client's misstatement and contradictions listed below:

    1. The client goes on to say in her review that I was slow, and then in the same review says I was rushing and was too fast. 2.The biggest issue was time, and her contract (which has the time on it) was never received which I also have proof of via email. As a responsible business owner I do accept any wrongdoings, however, this was an unfounded review (though I have numerous 5.0 reviews). This review was taken as gospel and I was truly treated very unfairly. After sending a refund, as well as sending numerous request for someone to tell me exactly how I could get my TOP pro status back (with no answer) I have decided to research other business options. I have found and signed up with Wedding Wire, as well as The Knot (which are only 2k a year saving me 4k), as these companies are a more business-friendly option.

No, the customer is not always right, however, you normally try to find a middle ground. But unfortunately, this company could not even offer a middle ground. Instead, I was threatened and had my TOP pro status revoked despite my proven truth. Not to mention how crazy the prices have become. A client sent me a message just saying nice pictures and that cost me 24.69. ABSURD!! Then you have the nerve to keep asking me for reviews. Needless to say, unless something is done to offer a compromise as well as advise on how I can redeem my TOP pro status You will continue to see a dramatic increase of quotes sent and will soon cease to utilize this service altogether. I look forward to hearing from Thumbtack on how this matter will be rectified.

Thumbtack hides their pricing for leads. They sneak it in FAQ's or hide in a small hyperlink on the left of the page. Back in 2013, it was in big letters with each lead. So I personally found it pretty bad. I also was positive in my account with +17 credits (now they moved to cash only), but they decided how much to convert those credit for and decided I owed $28. It's not a lot but it was enough. So needless to say, we don't recommend them. They charged us a whopping $60+ for a one-liner chat. in 2013, their leads were about $20 or less.

The last thing is that the later leads I bought were very problematic. The guy I called said he never contacted Thumbtack, was getting a lot of calls, and asked me to contact them to request they remove his number. Now maybe he changed his mind, but I can say our closure rate was almost non-existent. But to give credit where credit is due, in 2013, they were a heck of a company.

Join our class action - **. I have no idea how this site is still in business. It’s amazing there are any pros left on there. Simple fixes, such as requiring the user to list their actual budget, or allowing a drag/drop feature for photos in edit mode, are no-brainers and should’ve been there since day one, yet they’re nowhere near full implementation eight years in.

Travel Radius: If that’s not enough, for whatever reason, an overwhelming majority of users seem to be only “Conducting Initial Research”, meaning they’re nowhere near ready to book - some even select this option when their event date is listed as a month, or less, away. Beyond that, even though my band’s selected travel radius clearly puts us in the New York/New Jersey area, literally eighty percent or more of the requests we’ve received since day one come from Bunfuck, Pennsylvania.

Promoting False Advertising? Thumbtack openly admits the average user’s budget is usually much lower than the average pro’s quote. Thus, when they knowingly allow users to select from what, they believe, are the applicable parameters, ie., ‘standard/basic,’ etc., they are knowingly allowing a quote to be requested to a pro that may be well below what the pro deems ‘standard’. And if the user never responds, the pro never knows he/she was out of their range to begin with, thus, IMO promoting false advertising. But what do they care? They have their $15 fee.

Think of it this way. If you’re a plumber and I ask you what your rate is and you say “Standard for this job in your area,” then you do the job and say “That’ll be $300 please.” And I say “Well, I think $50 is standard,” therein lies the problem. By Thumbtack not requiring users to list an actual dollar amount, no pro will ever know if they’re on the same page with a client to begin with. Thus, IMO, Thumbtack is entrapping pros to submit to quotes they know may be low to begin with.

Help/Support: Another area that presents a huge negative vibe is the apparent arrogance of their public relations team. I’ve spoken with several of Thumbtack’s media, as well as customer service, contacts. And, while they’re completely pleasant and amenable, ultimately you end up getting stonewalled with the usual, “we’ll take that under advisement” or, “we don’t release that information to the public”, rebuff.

The Solution: Believe it or not, I actually came up with -what I believe- is an incredibly simple idea that could solve many of these problems for everyone - (if you think it’s just me, think again; ConsumerAffairs.com has Thumbtack rated at one star from pros and users, alike) however, instead of taking it seriously, I got the blow off. Sad but true.

My suggestion to the brass at Thumbtack was, and still is — in order to cut down on the amount of time-wasters/game-players on the site, simply charge each user $24.99 to submit a quote. Once both the pro and user mark themselves as “Hired,” the fee for the submission on the user’s end is refunded. Voila! Those who are seriously looking to hire a pro will not balk, as they know the money is coming right back to them. Those who may be playing around, or aren’t quite sure yet, will think twice before blowing twenty-five bucks. #Crickets

At the very least, how about requiring a response from a user before debiting a pro’s account? Oh, right, that would cut into Thumbtack’s profit margin. You could also simply charge pros a monthly fee to submit as many quotes as they like, as every other website under the sun does, but that would make them less $. Thumbtack, or the idea behind it, is a great concept and could be great site, but for the past eight years, it’s only been great if you’re a user. If you’re a pro, it’s a plethora of b.s. and endless time wasting. And, although they may have millions of users at the moment, how many users will they have going forward if there are no pros to respond to their requests? If they don’t start showing a bit more empathy, they could wind up the Enron of the Internet.

I first joined Thumbtack around 2012 as a makeup artist. I used to book gigs quite relative to the amount of time I'd spend submitting quotes. The actual site itself has come a long way with their analytics, message sorting, locations, profiles etc. It's so much better and I love it! However, roughly 6 years ago it was so much easier to get quotes. It was a monthly subscription that I think was about $20-30 and unlimited quotes. (Forgive me if I'm mistaken). Then they switched to credits. They gave everyone free credits to try out while we transitioned away from subscriptions and it was all fine and awesome.

Now, it's pretty much a "how much money can we sponge off pros" And I hate saying that. It has become quite expensive for pros to continuing using this service. The site has gotten so much better but the ethical and moral structure is deteriorating. For the amount of money for a contact, I could invest in actual advertising. The new structure is not a financially feasible option for small businesses. If they went back to ANY of their former structures, I'd stick around. But with submitting 10-20 quotes a week and no viable leads at these prices, I don't think I'll be staying much longer.

I have gotten a few gigs in the past in video production and photography but for the money spent sending out quotes, between $5 and $14 each, I didn't get enough business to justify continuing. There were also some very suspicious jobs at 3:00 am that seemed fake. Many people who use the service are total cheapskates who want to pay nothing for my services. On top of all that they recently pulled this scam so that you don't have to pay unless the person responds to you. But, you now have to commit to at least $20/week and if you don't use your credits each week you LOSE them and they don't roll over, on top of that what used to be a $13 quote is now $26, DOUBLED. A TOTAL RIPOFF.

I was a top pro with Thumbtack since 2009 pretty much since they started. At the beginning their business model was awesome. You paid for credits in advanced, quote was send only to 5 "pros" and the chances of getting hired was great! My business literally jumped 300% within the first two years. Then...started going downhill. I caught them a few times sending fake leads. Their response "we are doing research". They even give me free credits to keep my mouth shut lol then they changed their business model.

You will set up a budget and get charged only when the potential customer "replies." The problem with that is that even if the "customer" said "Hi" you will get charged anything from $10 to $20. At one point I even paid $385 bucks in less than 3 weeks! And zero returns. That's when things got even worse. They introduce the "Thumbtack Assist" which the "assistant" sends free quotes to anyone asking for services. The quote is send to up to #30 "Thumbtack pros" and your chances of getting hired are zero to none especially if someone underbids your quote. Also you get charged anywhere from $15 to even $50 if the potential client ask a simple question or suggestion. Not to mention a lot of the so called pros are not even qualified to do the job. Most of them are just regular folks trying to make a buck.

I'm in the fitness industry so (there are so many called pros in this field that take their certifications online). Then they started doing background checks which is good, not a bad thing especially if a potential customer is trying to hire the right person for the job. So I took the background check and within days I got a all clear and you're good to go. Then Thumbtack comes back at me saying that I am not the rightful owner of the account because my business name doesn't match (well gee I always go by my middle name). After explain to them even sending a copy of my DL and other documents such as official government documents they still stand by saying I was not the rightful owner of the account!!! At this point I was livid furious that someone at this company just decided that "oh yeah that guy is not the right owner. Close his account." They closed my account after being with them for 7 years!!

And I was featured on their "top pro successful stories" a few times... so my account was shut down because they didn't believe I was the rightful owner. Ummm... To anyone out there considering being a pro for Thumbtack or considering hiring someone from Thumbtack my advice stay away. There are other more respectful services. For people trying to hire... Google local professionals that are right for your job. You will help your town's small family business, feeds families and puts food on the table and is good karma.

Talking about good karma. Things always happen for a reason. After my divorce with Thumbtack I educated myself on advertising and Google AdWords and how to better manage my business and guess what? I am not doing that bad. Google AdWords is inexpensive if you educate on how to use it. Traffic to my website is steady and business is definitely picking up.

I used to get plenty of messages from people looking for drum lessons and found the platform to work extremely well. I'd get charged about $6 every time I got in touch with someone. Then they changed their system so that you are charged when someone replies to your emails -- about $10 - 25. Not a fan, but I could deal with that since a student that continues on for many months could be hundreds or thousands of dollars of income. I know this is definitely not the case for most gigs on this site that are one-off deals.

I noticed after a while that there was different prices for the three categories "seeking drum lesson (child)," "seeking drum lesson (adult)," and "seeking drum lesson." The last one, with no age attached was more expensive than either the drum lessons for kids or adults! I wrote to them to let them know about the problem and they essentially consolidated all three categories into one and putting the highest price on all of them. Worse still, now I get less info about the potential student -- instead of their exact age, I just get "0-18."

I don't really want to mess around trying to teach 3 or 4 year olds drums and now I'm in the position where to find out how old a student is I'd have to spend $20. Worse still is that I'm seeing less and less requests for lessons coming through the platform. I used to see 1-2 requests a day, now it's less than a quarter as many requests. tl;dr -- this platform is getting worse and worse over time and I think basically no one likes the changes they've made.

The customer would get 5 quotes sent to them. In the last year or so, they changed their business practice in the way they charge for submitting quotes. The first change was the chance to sign up for Instant Match, so the customer would only contact us if we were a match. The first Instant match, all of a sudden turned out to be $27.00. I turned off Instant Match and went back to the old way of X number of credits per quote, they changed it to actual charges, ex. $16.67, $21.87... Arbitrarily, no consistency, and they now send out 12 quotes.

This year they went overboard. The new practice is free quotes and we get charged if the customer contacts us. By Thumbtack definition, "Are you available on my date?" a contact, even if there is no further word from the customer. My last 3 "contacts" cost me $47.00+. Instant Match is also still available, the price structure is the same. I am submitting this review and giving these leeches 0 stars.

Now? This new "weekly budget" thing? The absolute WORST idea, ever. Set a weekly budget of $100-300 dollars. Weekly. So a contractor might pay $1,200.00 a month. But you're still not guaranteed that the lead will be decent. Could just be a phone call. They've priced everyone out of the service. My take is that they have investors who are demanding more ROI. She firsts asks for 2 meals refunded. She then asks for gratuity refunded. She then asks for gratuity refunded, as well as 20% of the dinner. This dinner was a huge hit. The guests asked our chef to take videos and photos of them. We have videos of everyone enjoying their meal, and one of the guests saying "Chef J ** is the best chef ever!" They invited him out afterwards. So after all of this, to hear from our client asking for a refund 2 weeks after the event completely blind-sighted us.

She was entirely unwilling to speak with our chef, who took care of this dinner for her. I ended up reporting this to Thumbtack. A couple of weeks later, they shut down our account, and tell us to get it up and running again, we have to try to resolve this, even if this means just refunding her $10 tip that she herself placed. We agreed to try to resolve this, only to find out her requests again all over the place (gratuity, then gratuity + 20% refund, and then lying saying that we didn't have permission to record in her home. We have messages saying she was from Canada and this was an Airbnb).

After all of this, Thumbtack told us that they would indefinitely close our account if we did not refund her money. Thumbtack has no right to get involved with a customer dispute who disputed something without grounds 2 weeks after her event. When the individual attempts to contact you, they are asked numerous questions about their request for services and then they are introduced to your competition! Wow! I have been with them for a few years and have offered several ideas - never getting feedback on my suggestions. Additionally, they have recently decided to charge members almost 500% of previous costs to get a response from a potential customer.

Even if the customer simply reaches out to you but doesn't decide to hire you, that contact now cost money which is immediately taken from your credit card (-from a weekly budget you must set up) and you weren't even hired! OMG... One might have better odds purchasing a $2 lottery ticket! Now it's hard to talk to a customer service representative in the States, because they have out-sourced their help desk to the Philippines - probably just to handle all the complaints. Numerous members have left - posting very negative comments on the internet! Hey, my advice to remaining members: sign up with Angie's List. They're free to many start up small businesses! You can decide on marketing strategies and fees later.

Updated 8/8/2018: I recently passed on a quote. I wanted to send one because the client was local and I really felt that I could have helped them. However, the last time I sent a quote I was charged $17 - just for having the client respond. It's important to note that I wasn't even hired! Additionally, my hourly fee is only $45! It's easy to see that my return-on-investment was too risky. I have also removed my credit card info until Thumbtack either returns to the old system of only charging a few $'s per quote (-if reviewed by customer), or charges pro's only when they are hired.

Even if hired, I'm fearful that Thumbtack will require a huge commission. I base this concern on their recent decision of charging more than 500% of our previous charges. They say that this new approach only charges their professionals when they are actually contacted by a client. But if the client doesn't hire you, your R.O.I. is often not worth the investment /odds. They need to do some serious and immediate damage-control (-ASAP) if they want to hold onto a once loyal Base - now a very dissatisfied base - according to all the negative blogs inside their chat room as well as, numerous very negative posts continuing to flood the internet!... Waiting to see their next move. --Still 'slightly' hopeful.

If you still want to work for Thumbtack. It's cheaper to just send them all your money. There is no reason get up and go to work when they take more than you will make. And even better you pay them before their fake customer contacts you. 1 out of 2 customers seem to be fake. This is a scam, Thumbtack charged me $12.50 for a possible 1 hour session which in my case results in $40. I do not mind the previous system, and understand the way the process works, where out of every 10 quotes one comes back (maybe). But this is insane. Let me break this down: Previous system: $2-$3/quote, means out of 10 quotes maybe a $40 session (so I spend $20-30 and get back 40) Great, awesome, and perfect. Current system: $12.50/quote, 10 quotes, $125 for a $40 session??? I am not paying $125 just to go work and spend time for a negative balance. I liked Thumbtack, but it seems as though they care about making money. What is more aggravating in this situation that the customer didn't even respond to my follow up messages, they responded once and nothing anymore (but Thumbtack system and policy is OK with this). System is flawed.

I have been with Thumbtack since their inception around early 2010. It was sort of slow to begin with and then really picked up for me the last three years I would say 2015, 2016 and later 2017 there was a change in their pricing, I have called customer service about six times since October of last year and it’s the same old same old. They will not refund your money when you get what do you feel are bogus client submissions and as soon as you respond you never hear back from the said Client. I believe at this point that Thumbtack is arbitrarily submitting bogus submissions and getting the professionals to quote on them and charging them.

I went from paying around $25-$30 a month to over $100 a month with just a few quotes that I never generated any business out of. I’ve really tried to be patient but as of now it is costing me. I have recently went to the professional level of Wedding Wire to try to generate some more business as I have business responsibilities that Thumbtack Is not allowing me to handle because of the what I feel to be bogus clients. What??? LifeLock tells me that's a "NO." Not worth the risk!

I have brought my concerns up to numerous people at Thumbtack and so far am not being offered another option to list, and that would be without the background verification. I have a solid work background and good customer feedback to show for it. They told me yesterday that "old" pros don't have to do the background check. I said that I should qualify for that since I listed on their site last year for another service. Then I was told they're still selecting "randomly" old pros to submit to the background check, requiring you to release your social security number. LifeLock told me that professional hackers/ex cons are the ones who create the encryption and are also able to hack that. With so much identity theft today, it's a shock to me that there's still an insecure method being used, AND giving info to foreign countries is just baffling and scary!

So I stopped for 3 months, came back and now they have something called Instant Match.

They explained to me you set a budget and it can be as little as $20. They also ensured me I may not use the whole budget, so I give it a try, well whatyaknow, they took my whole budget for one person reaching out, they told me in the beginner it's cheaper for the pro, how is that. So Im about to delete my account. But I'm sure they will get a few more dumb people like I was for years. So with my deleted account and review it's not hurting them. Do businesses so wrong. I told them I would stay if they had the old way to know the price upfront and quote then. They said no they changed their platform and out with the old in with the new rip off! PRO BEWARE!!!

None that I know did, but I realize I do not talk to all of them. Costs went up from under $10 per lead to now up to $150, yes one hundred fifty. They state there are too many variables to tell vendors in advance what the cost will be. But you are charged immediately if someone contacts you. How is that possible if they do not know in advance what the charge will be?

I have had several phone calls and chat sessions with them. Always, "our engineers" will review your concerns. I highly doubt they are "engineers" reviewing vendor feedback. Since the latest round of rate hikes, it has cost me about 500% more, received less business, and more customer replies only to be told they have cancelled the project. Thumbtack counts that as a contact and will charge you for it. They win in every circumstance. In addition to the rate hike, they have now gone to allowing upwards of 10 vendors to quote. I have seen 13 quotes to a request. Again, they told me this was a request by their vendors. HARDLY. Does any vendor want to have a 3 fold increase in their competition. They referred people well over an hour away from me constantly, for free because they were out of my designated area. But being sent people messaging me from outside my area was just the start. I was sent a message from a client whom lived just over an hour and a half from my home. I told the lady she was too far but I would be willing to talk with her over the phone and see if I could offer some advice. I never hear back from this woman till two days later when she sent me her door code at 8 am. Keep in mind I didn't even have this lady's address, and had never agreed to work with her. I stated the opposite quite clearly. Before I could see she messaged me her code and respond she had marked me as hired and left my company a 1 star review.

I contacted Thumbtack to have the review removed since it violates their policy and didn't reflect services of a pro. They refused. Even with the lady apologizing and admitting to her mistake. After many days of communication I decided I would rather not be associated with Thumbtack at all if this was how they were going to represent my business. So I asked to be removed from the system which also apparently wasn't an option. It took me threatening to sue them, to have them completely remove me from their system.

The customers you get via Thumbtack are not the cream of the cream, why? Because Thumbtack is really really bad at screening. Last year I got this woman who was super nice I thought. We met, she liked my portfolio, we signed a contract and I started the design of her guest house. She had no idea what she wanted but I tried to help her as much as I could throughout the design process. When she approved the design and we were ready to close that phase, she decided not to continue with the project. I guess she realized she didn't have the money for what she wanted to build and decided to stop and also demand her money back, money she had paid me for my work.

When I sent her the clauses from our contract about how the projects go, she refused to pay me what she owed me, so I cancelled the project. She then went on Thumbtack and wrote the most horrific reviews about me full of lies, made up stories, personal comments I had made unrelated to my work, etc. and all of that she was allowed to write. When I very politely responded, Thumbtack took down my reply and stopped me from defending myself because "she" had the right to write her version but I was not allowed to write mine even though I was the one paying them. They did not protect me, they did not support me in any way and they demanded I went through mediation with this crazy woman. To mediate what?

The woman tried to get me in trouble with the contractor's license board. She got some tax lawyer to write me a letter threatening me with a lawsuit based on nothing real which went nowhere cause she had no grounds for a lawsuit. She went on Google and Facebook and left horrible reviews about me, and who knows what else she did that I don't know. When she realized there was nothing she could do to harm me anymore, she stopped harassing me. Yesterday I decided to reclaim my Thumbtack account and I was told I can't because my issue with that woman was never resolved. They want me to go to mediation in order for me to continue to advertise with them. Isn't that great? The company protects others, not their own. Then they changed their model. Now they are claiming "free quotes unless you land a job!" Sounds nice. Except I have remaining balance in my account and they will not let me make quotes unless I give them my credit card so they can charge however they like.

They will not reimburse me, and they will not let me send out quotes. I'm a photographer that has used Thumbtack for nearly 2 years. I can say that in the beginning it really helped me to get wedding jobs that I otherwise would have never gotten. It got my business up and running, though it was still rather pricey. I was charged for every time a customer merely viewed my quote. Often, quotes would be viewed without the customer actually contacting a Pro. I hated that aspect. There was no way of knowing if the request was a serious one. I still stuck with it, because it was a really good way to build my portfolio and get some referrals from those jobs. At that time it was a little more fair, because I knew how much money I was spending for each quote, weddings were a separate category, and I would get some limited information about what the customer was looking for in a photographer.

Therefore, I would only bid on jobs that seemed a good fit for me and had felt I had a chance at getting. It was a very hot and cold way of trying to get business. Sometimes I would go weeks without a single contact from a potential customer and spend hundreds on quotes, while at other times I would get several hires within a week. Fast forward to the present with the changes that have been made and I'm left very disappointed. At first I was feeling very optimistic when they changed their charging policy to only charged you for a reply to your quote. This was exactly the type of change I was looking for! However there were other changes that completely negated my sense of optimism.

First off, they merged weddings with events so I got far less information from a request than before. The budget possibilities for a wedding went drastically down. Before, $600 was the lowest a person could set for a wedding budget. Now there are options for $250-$500 and "less than $250". It was already very much a place for bargain basement hunters, but now it is much worse. It seems that less than 10% set their budget at $500-$1000 and far less for a more reasonable budget of $1000-$2000. It all of sudden got much harder to find jobs worth even doing. Secondly, the way they approach pricing has become less transparent and far more costly.

The first straw for me was when I was charged $42.39 for a I job I did get at the low price of $500 where their budget was $250-$500. I was told that it was that expensive because the customer left their phone number in her reply, which made the contact more valuable. That's still a lot for a job you aren't yet hired for. I already regretted sending the quote even after I got hired and my enthusiasm for the job was very low, which is not good when creativity is needed to perform a job.

The second straw came when today I found out that I was charged $38.04 for a contact for a job that has a budget of $500-$1000. The person who sent the request contacted 5 others. That brings me to another point of dissatisfaction. It used to be that only 5 pros could bid on a job, but now it's as many as 15! They are using something called "Instant Match" which automatically sends quotes on your behalf, but doesn't allow you to customize what's written in the quote, except for the amount you are quoting.

If you don't set your amount to a low price, then you are almost certain not to ever get any replies to your quote. After they started using "Instant Match" for weddings, I am now thinking I need stop using this service. You don't know who you are quoting to or how much it's going to cost you and you are competing against far more people, many of which have set their prices at unreasonably low amounts. A friend told that when a company starts to make drastic changes to their product, it is probably in its death throes. Maybe this is the case with Thumbtack. It doesn't seem to care about those that actually pay for their service and only panders to the people that don't (the ones that send the requests).

Well, not only do I have an incomplete, unfinished project (lights still not working and thankfully job was small), but because I got this uneasy feeling I did some background checking on my own of the handyman and found he has a verifiable criminal background that is easily ascertained with a press release of his arrest for grand theft that was run online. Instead, I feel the customer asking for pricing is so overwhelmed by a large number of pros bidding for a job that is not even a guarantee any one of us will get. And I was making good money for the past few years on Thumbtack, but over the past year (2017) they have substantially raised the prices. They charge pros just to get a contact/not a job, a contact mind you that may never hire you, which means emailing this contact through their website, so you do not even get their personal email. Like tonight, I got a contact for a wedding officiant position, my price I would charge the couple was only $125, as I like to offer a reasonable deal, but Thumbtack's fee was $21 just to talk to the couple through emailing on their site, I would have to pay this upfront without getting the couples phone/contact or the job. No addresses, numbers nothing. The math is more. One lead for a contractor is 18.85 in my area. So now just for $55 a week you can get maybe 5 contacts? $55 X 4= $220.00. Why should I pay $43 for a customer who is shopping around to ask me what is the next step for me to reply and never hear back from the customer, when that customer never had plans on or intent on hiring someone from the beginning? Maybe they should start charging the customer a percentage instead of price gouging us! I was told from a support person that under their new system if I received a request for a quote that I would not be charged if they contacted me directly. I paused their Instant Match which I thought meant that any quote requests coming through were direct contacts. Then I discovered today they've been charging for the quotes-no indication of the charge in the quote, no bill to peruse, no notification that I was charged.

I discovered it by accident when I went to make a quote that told me I was over the $20 weekly budget I set (which I thought only was used if "Instant Match" is on and I had paused that). I can't afford $20 per week when I am essentially fully booked for the hours I want to work. I'm concerned somehow they will charge me for something but I hate to eliminate my account in case I need it in the future. I can't decide it. Eliminating it will lower my website in search engines. Of course, for a while now, my high 5 star rating on Thumbtack has been used to lure in potential customers liking my profile who are then given quotes from multiple teachers.

NOTHING is stated that you will be charged, in the section where they ADVISE you to send a follow up email.

Tech Support CHAT argued for 30 minutes, and when I attempted to call the Tech Support phone number (open until 7 pm PT), they were away from the phone for the next hour and a half (1:00 to 2:30 pm PT). When I started using Thumbtack, it was a fairly reasonably priced site for the small business owners to find local clients searching for their services. The bids were $8-$15 and the prices were shown on the bid requests. You were also only competing against a FEW other providers, once the 3 or five customer contacts were made the request was closed and you could no longer submit a bid.

Then they got greedy and came up with a scam where they only make you pay for the bids where there is customer contact (Thumbtack's definition of "contact" is your message to the customer is viewed by the customer, regardless of whether or not they respond to you). Not only that, their price has been marked up 500%-1000% as well as the cost of the bid now being hidden. I sent a message to 2 different customers that would have normally been $8-$15 each only to discover (once my card had been charged) that those two bids now cost me $65. Of the two customers, I had one asking if I could meet him yesterday and never respond to any more of my emails and the other only viewed my message. Well worth the $65, wouldn't you agree?

I immediately texted Thumbtack to discuss this and was informed of the outrageous increase in bid price at which point I asked them to delete my account. I will NEVER (N E V E R... N. E. V. E. R.) use them again. I'm not telling you what to do, maybe you have unlimited funds and time to bid on unresponsive customers and maybe you enjoy that sort of thing. But if you don't, avoid Thumbtack like the plague because who knows what's next... $400 annual fee on top of the $60 bid price like the other lead services. I am a college student, but I have many marketable skills. I decided to do on Thumbtack to sell my services in a few things, including ACT prep, SAT prep, science tutoring, and jewelry making skills. Not only were most customers just "looking" and not ready to hire, but Thumbtack charged you obscene amounts of money just to talk to them. For two clients looking for help with ACT/SAT prep, they charged me $20 a piece when they were just asking simple questions. I was not hired by anyone through Thumbtack, although I made many efforts to be accommodating to people looking for help.

Every time someone would talk to me, it would be for a question that was easily answerable by my profile, or they would change their mind, effectively screwing me over. Thumbtack didn't wait to take a percentage once you were hired, they have the mentality of "every customer contact is valuable". Not if the customer is just browsing! Or if they don't bother to read your profile before asking questions.

They do not publicize to clients that each contact costs money to the vendors, encouraging "stupid" or uninformed questions to be asked all the time, giving Thumbtack more opportunities to make more money. I even had one client said that they had changed their mind, and then sent out another request for the same thing! This website doesn't encourage people to respect the time of the people selling their services, and by the way they take people's money, they don't respect the independent contractors either. Overall, Thumbtack just took my money, and called it a day, so I have wiped my hands clean of them, and moved on to other ventures, such as Task Rabbit, that at least make sure you get paid before they take a cut!

BE CAREFUL because their main obligation is to the reviewing customer NOT the people who pay them fees - they want you money yes, but they know the name of the game is to accumulate reviews so their value goes up. First, it was about competing with 4-5 other bidders and then suddenly they changed the system to "instant match". Good luck in getting any leads. You will spend between $18 and $40 per lead only to find yourself competing with 15 other bidders now.

If my calculation is correct, that is between $300 and $600 revenue to them per lead!!! Wow, are we in the wrong business? I really loved Thumbtack for two years. Got so much business and experience. I no longer am using it though because of the dreaded changes. When Instant Match was launched, I declined to use it because I prefer to only bid on jobs that I want to bid on. (I’m a caterer and I like large corporate events, as opposed to small house parties.) But I noticed that when I manually quote jobs, I’m just not getting hired anymore as of about May 2018. Which is weird because I have great reviews, a great website, and competitive rates.

Well I tested Thumbtack as a customer to see what happens with Instant Match. Basically, the customer automatically gets their quotes but instead of 5, I was about 7. Then about 20 minutes later, as a pro, I received the same quote request. Why would the customer look at 5 more quotes that come 20 minutes later if they already got 7 automatically? Plus, the odds are now against the pro that they’re hired. 12 quotes is too many to compete against. Thumbtack has to work well for the pro or else pros won’t do business with them. The way they're operating now is great for Thumbtack (12 quotes for every request = lots of money) but pros will not continue spending money if they’re not getting hired.

Funny story for you: Last year, I catered an event for a tech company in NYC. I spoke to the CEO of the company who asked me how I got hired to work for them. (One of his employees hired me, not him). I told him Thumbtack. He asked me how it’s working for me. I said, "GREAT! I love Thumbtack!" He told me, “That’s good for you. My investors are the same as Thumbtack’s. And they are making a KILLING.” I thought nothing of that. If a company is doing great, and I’m doing great, that’s perfect. Everyone’s happy. Now, since Thumbtack has gotten insanely greedy, and the pros aren’t happy, something’s gotta give. Bye Felisha! Er, Thumbtack.

I joined Thumbtack a couple of years ago as a customer because I needed pictures done. I had a great experience as a customer because it got me in touch with a professional that was good at their craft and provided what I needed. Years later as an aspiring cinematographer, I decided to use Thumbtack as a professional to build up clientele as well as my reel. Since I had a great experience as a customer, I didn't expect such a shady service as a professional.

I did not read previous reviews before signing up and submitting quotes, although I probably should have to avoid this frustration I am currently feeling. I read through their policies and set-up - I set a "weekly budget" and I can submit quotes for free. I only have to pay for when a customer responds to a quote. This seemed fine at first until my first quote I submitted to a "potential" client cost me nearly $20 (after setting a budget of $50) that was IMMEDIATELY withdrawn from my checking account! Then the client said she was on there searching for her future daughter-in-law and that she would pass along my information. I immediately contacted Thumbtack and asked for a refund. Their response, "We only refund in the form of credit." I was perplexed by this statement but I thought, ok because I didn't know any better.

A week later I submitted another quote to a client. Their project intrigued me so I thought "why not?" The client responded and was fairly responsive, however, I knew something should have been up when in my initial quote I submitted my personal number and email for the client to contact me (hoping they would so I could avoid being charged again). That was not the case - the client responded to my quote, thus Thumbtack charged me almost $40 (BUT $18 of it was "credited" to my account because of the previous situation) so out of my account goes $22. An hour later the client says his wife didn't like the idea and then proceeded to cancel his project.

Again, I contacted Thumbtack support via chat (cause their phone line was ridiculously busy, of course) and the robot on the other end just submitted standard automated sounding responses such as "sorry for your blah, blah, blah" and "we do not provide refunds except as credit" then sent me links to their Policy guide. I continued to ask for a refund and point out the fact that their business practice made no sense. How is they are able to withdraw money from my account but can't refund the money back into my account, especially when the client cancels! It's not my fault the "client" changed their mind. They then told me "when a customer responds to your quote, it's your job to lose."

Thanks to their "statistics" I could see that the client did not contact any other person that submitted a quote, unless it was auto-generated to create the appearance they received other bids, which I am beginning to believe more and more (especially after reading so many similar reviews) that they have created the perfect scam. Imagine thousands of professionals joining, submitting quotes daily and having "clients" respond. Each professional is charged X amount of dollars just to "talk" to a "client." Then the "client" cancels the job or tell the professional "thanks but no thanks." That's a WHOLE lot of money being taken away from people! Prior to writing this review, I ultimately decided to deactivate my account. It was a futile test on my part to try and gain clients. I guess I will stick to word of mouth and posting to my social media to try and gain clients.

Thumbtack used to be pretty good. You could buy credits and send quotes to potential customers. It was kind of a shotgun approach in that you had to send quite a few to get any replies but it did actually work. When I compared how much I spent to how much I actually made, it was worth doing. Then they raised their prices quite a bit but it was still ok if you were careful. Now they don't allow that and charge when a potential customer wants to contact the pro. The problem with that is the prices. I don't know where or how they decided what a job is worth but it is totally ridiculous.

I had a woman ask if I was available on her date and they wanted over $20 just to answer. Are you kidding? I do not like what they have done and will no longer use this website. I decide how my money is spent. Not them. After reading what I wrote, I decided that while true, it doesn't convey my outrage at them. I want to be civil but they really stink and do not back you up at all. All they want is your money. I DO NOT recommend them for anything!

I signed up for this service thinking it would give me more leads, well the only way you get any leads is you have to pay a minimum of $65 per week. This really sucks because you pay them and if you don’t get any replies to your submissions they still charge your credit card every Monday. Not a good service at all. My advice run away as fast as you can. I asked a question of them about this after I sent a request for more information from someone who wanted work done and a week went by and I wanted to cancel my credit card. The only way I could end this was to deactivate my account, this is just a big ripoff.

We used Thumbtack to find a contractor to fix a small leak in our hot tub that we recently acquired with the purchase of a home. The contractor did a horrific job, he had 12 opportunities to correct his work and when all was said and done the tub was worse off than before. We are forced to take legal action against this individual unfortunately. We first attempted to take action thru the Thumbtack website, which I seriously warn against anyone doing. Thumbtack had listed on their site that they had 'background verified' the contractor we used but in fact, they did and do nothing of the kind. The contractor was not licensed, he had a phony LLC he is hiding behind and Thumbtack did nothing about it and they still let this individual post on their site. Lesson learned, always check the Better Business Bureau in your area before allowing someone to work on your stuff.

My interaction with this company was appalling. I was contacted by someone and charged $10.69. I disputed the charge at which point they tell me it's my profile that needs to be fixed. There was nothing wrong with my profile. A customer on Thumbtack messaged me asking my availability and told me what he wanted. Apparently I was supposed to address the customer and drive at the same time. Last I checked that was illegal and called distracted driving. Not even 45 minutes after the initial contact he decided to message me back about he hired someone local. I am not paying for a charge to something that's clearly bogus. WHAT A SCAM COMPANY!!! Between 2014 and 2016, I earned thousands of dollars through Thumbtack's gig bidding service as a part-time professional magician. The price Thumbtack charged me often seemed arbitrary, but as it was on the low end ($3.33-5.00, typically), I stuck with it. In 2017, however, Thumbtack launched a highly deceptive campaign. Claiming that it had "heard" its gig professionals, it began offering what it claimed as "free" bidding. In fact, what this means is that professionals must pony up a budget of minimum $35/week, paying staggering fees of $20-40 each time a potential client merely *responds* to a bid, regardless of whether that contact even pans out into a paid gig. I urge other working professionals to boycott Thumbtack and to call out Thumbtack CEO Marco Zappacosta, the criminal mastermind of this outrageous policy, on social media. Thumbtack is committing fraud against gig professionals.

They tried to say you won't pay unless the customer responds but you pay 29 for someone who may or may not be real. A pro should not be charged unless they are marked hired. Recently they have been implementing changes, some good, others not so much. Rates went up dramatically, but at first there was an offset that kept my quote cost reasonable because it was only the customers that contacted me directly that I had to pay for. The rates had gone from between $8 and $13 to between $50 and $75. This was fine because I was only being charged for quotes I received a response to.

Before I paid for almost every quote and had no access to the customers. Now they changed it again not allowing me to actually send a quote. I have to ask for more information. When the customers provide that, I am charged. They have no way to tell if a service provider is a good fit for them. And all of us who respond to the request will be charged at their new higher rate before a customer had actual quotes to look at. Worst of all is that the customer doesn't have any idea how much money they will be costing each service provider when they ask for all quotes . The customer has already provided all the pertinent information in their request. Thumbtack is making it more expensive for the provider, more expensive for the customers and more work for the customer.

I have been a 3-year user on Thumbtack. They started out in a reasonable business model. Inexpensive cost to quote and limit 5 quotes per customer. A good system for customers and suppliers. Cost per quote was $5-6 on a $150 job. Good margins. Over last, 3 years spent $3000 and generated $30000 in revenue. an average of 10% ad cost. Now the new business model is an Instant match where 15 quotes are given to clients. No one will open and read 15 quotes. Most are returned and not opened. The new model is even worst. We are not told what the quote will cost and when a customer inquires about your service like ask a simple question you get charged.

Last night my first experienced was an inquiry about time from client. Next job was canceled. Got charged $23.96 for an inquiry a 400 % increase in ad cost and no income. This is the most bizarre system (business Model). Thumbtack rakes in the money. The local business pay through the nose and business profits suffers. I can not pass the added cost to my clients in a competitive market so I will have less profit if I stay with Thumbtack. This is all part of the internet greed a good idea turned into more money for them. Customer service is a joke. Only reading the corporate answers. I have been using Thumbtack for 2 years now. I own a private tutoring business, and I tried it out to generate new business. Initially, bids cost me 1-3 credits or $1.99-$5.99 per job (cost of bidding varied by industry). Sometimes I even bid on jobs for free if there were few pros in the area. At that time, only 5 pros were permitted to bid on a single job. If the client did not view your bid within 48 hours, they refunded your money for that bid. It was a great system! Within the first couple weeks I had booked 2 jobs. Within 6 months, I was a “Top Pro.”

Over the past two years, I have been hired more than 60 times on Thumbtack. I have been hired for many other jobs because of referrals from Thumbtack clients. I have made tens of thousands of dollars because of my use of Thumbtack. I referred everyone I knew to Thumbtack. I would have recommended the service to anyone... Until now. They started making changes a few months ago - implementing the auto bid service (which I declined to use) and allowing more pros to bid on jobs, etc. I definitely saw a drop in my Thumbtack revenue, but I was still loyal; that was until this past weekend when I saw my first charge statement for the new blind-bid system. I had a potential client click an auto-response to my bid, “What’s your availability?” Bam - TWENTY BUCKS! Are they insane? That is a little over a 1000% increase.

As of today, I have removed all credit cards from my account, and sadly, my relationship with a Thumbtack has come to an end. I don’t know why they decided to get greedy and change their business model. It was good for them, good for small businesses, and good for consumers (people like only 5 bids - they don’t want their inbox spammed with quotes). I hope someone else starts a service similar to what Thumbtack was in the beginning, or maybe Thumbtack will read all of these 1-Star reviews and go back to the way they were.

I began using Thumbtack in 2014 when it was fairly new but quickly gaining notoriety, as a Home Improvement Painting and Remodeling Professional. It still took a fair amount of effort, money, and patience to land a "job" from Thumbtack's services, but I ended up scoring around 15-20 jobs in the 1st year or so. Fairly satisfied with that I continued using them again after approx. 4 months away from it. Back after just a few months, I noticed quite a change they made, their prices increased dramatically and I noticed you wasn't able to know what they were going to charge you for submitting a bid for each lead they sent to me. After bravely sending a few "blind" bids to job leads I kind of got an idea of what the leads were going to cost me.

After a couple months of submitting these bids to their job leads, not only did I notice I wasn't getting Any response from the job leads, but also they were charging more for the job leads, and again, they still wouldn't tell me how much the leads would cost before I submitted a bid to them. Then after slowing down and only submitting 1 to 2 bids per month, I noticed their new app features a link I can click on to see Who else bid on the same lead as I did, our compared response time, who the "potential client" contacted and didn’t contact, and a couple other stats. I was shocked, appalled, angry and frustrated when I found out that they were sending the exact same lead that I had bid on to up to 14 other contractors!!!

Ugh... Omg, I could not believe what I was seeing! Here I thought they were only sending 1 single lead out to 3 to 5 other contractors to submit bids on (and even then I thought that giving 5 contractors the same lead to bid on was to many; most companies only send a single lead out to 3 different contractors to bid on). And keep in mind that whatever they are charging me to send a bid usually around $23 for an interior painting job lead, they are charging the same to each and every one of those 14 contractors that sent a bid to the same exact lead!! And the lead client would normally only contact 1 or 2 contractors out of the 14 that paid the same as I did to submit a bid/quote to that lead! Needless to say, after my discoveries, I quit using them all together. However, I still have $148 left on my account. And I’m not sure yet how to get at least that money back... ugh.

I just cannot believe that Thumbtack, or any business for that matter, can get away with what they're doing. My guess is that they are probably going to go balls to the wall and rip off as many and as much as they can and then file bankruptcy and then start a whole new company and start all over again, just like what "HomeAdvisor" did, they used to be "Service Magic" and when they got shut down for unethical business practices they filed bankruptcy then a bit later popped up as "HomeAdvisor" and kept on truckin'. I mean isn't there supposed to be someone out there or laws or something to prevent this kind of unfair practice?? Because bottom line, that’s exactly what it is.

Thumbtack is by far the worst company I've ever had affiliated myself with. As a pro, they have an option called "instant match" that is supposed to link you with interested clients. 95 percent of those clients are bots or scams, but the issue is that Thumbtack will charge you once the customer makes contact. No back and forth conversation even needs to take place. If they say "hello" or "are you available" and they never say anything in addition to that, Thumbtack charges you. How much does Thumbtack charge you ask? WHATEVER AMOUNT THEY FEEL LIKE. They do not tell you the cost of communication with a client until you are already charged. Some customer contact will cost 10 bucks, others can be 42 dollars, and there is nowhere on their site that helps to explain the vast range in their change for the same kind of client.

The fact you get a generic message from a "client" with no phone number, no email address, no way to verify if that client is real, and then charge me 42 dollars because a "client" asked "are you available on my date" and they never respond back? Complete scam. You will lose more money than you will ever gain. You may ask yourself "what if I reach out to their Thumbtack customer service team to make a bad situation right?" Forget about it. Their team is fully aware of the scam they run. They are very resistant, and they will put you through hurdles to speak to someone in management, and they refuse to refund you or make adjustments in circumstances where a scam may be present. They do not care about building the relationship with their patrons. They are looking for suckers who don't pay attention to their credit card accounts so that they can continue to run up mysterious prices that they make up, and charge you forever.

It would have been okay if a vendor would receive genuine leads from them, but getting a genuine lead on Thumbtack is like winning the lotto. Good luck. I don't know how a CEO can live with themselves knowing that they operate a business this way. When you think of Thumbtack, think is just a new age way to run a Ponzi scheme. Since when is it okay to have a business model that says I'm allowed to charge you whatever I want, and you won't know what I decide to charge you until I actually put the charge through? C'mon now.

Typically I would report the bid and I wouldn't be charged. This was troubling because it was a manual process that is time consuming and there were several daily. Well as of today it appears that they are doing away with this reporting system and the contact itself is enough to justify a legitimate bid. That's $20 that can be charged by any competitor whenever they are bored enough to generate false leads that look realistic enough to pass. Thumbtack did refund me for the lead generated by MR "WELL HUNG" though I can to manually review my quotes and it was months after the fact that I got my $20 back.

Thumbtack keeps changing the rules on vendors, and the new payment system is downright dishonest. Vendors are no longer allowed to see what a bid will cost - you must blindly submit a bid and then Thumbtack simply bills your credit card pretty much whatever it likes. In our case bids have increased 3-5 times in cost. Absolutely ridiculous. Compounding the problem is that many people go to Thumbtack either to just kick the tires or looking for the lowest price - they are unaware that vendors pay for leads. One must waste a lot of money on bogus bids to land a real job - this process is now no longer worth it given their random blind pricing.

I started using Thumbtack back in December 2017. Between then and now, I've booked about 12 or so gigs, most of them being weddings. By far, the number of quotes I sent far exceeded the number of gigs I landed, but it was okay with me, since the gigs I was landing were between $800-$1200. A few weeks ago, Thumbtack integrated a new system where they don't allow the pro to see how much it will cost to send a quote... I was charged over $40 on a gig, I quoted the client $300. Here's the thing, I really don't have a problem with that. It's still $260 I wouldn't have earned if it weren't for Thumbtack. Yes, I think it's way too much, but nonetheless, I'm grateful for an app that helps me find work. And if I land the gig, I'm willing to give them their cut.

My issue is, what if I don't land the gig... They're still going to charge me the $40!?! Yes. And that's where I had to draw the line. I removed my card information and have not responded to one quote since sending Thumbtack a message about my issue with their new system. I will not use Thumbtack again unless they allow me to know how much it will cost to send a quote to a client. Is Thumbtack a completely bogus app? No. Like I mentioned, I've booked about dozen gigs through Thumbtack in 3 months time.

Is this new system they've integrated sustainable? Absolutely not. It's completely ridiculous to think they'd charge a pro $40 even if we don't land the job. It used to be $5, sometimes $13. And at least we got to use our own discernment to choose if we were going to pay that much. Now, they want to blindfold us and pick our pockets. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience with Thumbtack, until they got greedy. If you want to know how you can put an end to this foolishness: stop giving them your money.

And the terms and conditions say that they have the discretion to charge my acct. when and how much they want to. It’s very misleading the way it’s described so BEWARE. It worked for us only for about a month or so, but then everything have changed with this new system they came up with. It is horrible and very unproductive for the professionals. The pros can't see the prices per lead before they purchase it and can't choose the lead based on the prices. This system blindfolds professionals by allowing the company to charge whatever they feel like without giving you an opportunity to pick and choose or letting you know about the original price per lead at the beginning. Very DISHONEST practices! When we go to the grocery store, we as consumers have the right to see the prices before we buy anything in that store. It would have been crazy if we were notified of the prices after the fact of purchase, not even at the register.

This is CRAZY!!! VERY DISHONEST PRACTICES!!! Pros are being robbed and taken advantage of, while the customers have no idea what it takes for professionals to get in some kind of contact with the a POTENTIAL customer (the keyword potential). It takes on average 5-10 leads to get 1 decent customer and if one lead costs $10 -$20 -$30… Well, you do the math. These are the prices every pro have to pay to get one out of ten customers that would convert into a job. We don’t mind to pay $5 per lead, to try out many leads in the hope to get one customer, but paying $20 for leads/customers that just want an estimate and are looking for very cheap work is very challenging.

Thumbtack used to be a great service to work with. You could bid on jobs for as little as $2.00. Now they've created a new system where you don't know how much you are paying for a bid, and you only find out after the customer has contacted you. The costing is completely arbitrary, and can run as high as $41.00 for a single bid. Considering that a lot of people are just kicking the tires and not even looking at bids, this can get to be a very expensive proposition for the service provider.

Now, I've been a provider with Thumbtack since 2010, and have worked with over 300 customers through Thumbtack, garnering over 130 reviews (mostly 5 star). Why they've changed to this new system designed to soak their partners is bizarre. I've largely deactivated my account and will ignore future bids. I can't imagine them staying viable for long with this model.

Thumbtack states the only time you'll get charged is when the customer either: 1. Sends you a message. 2. Calls you. 3. Books an appointment or 4. Hires your services. Which are all fine and reasonable until you understand that even if a customer hires another Pro or passes on your quote without ever actually contacting you or messaging you to at least give the chance to win the business, Thumbtack will charge the pro and every pro that was not contacted or hired. When you ask them why they feel it is fair business practice to charge everyone for the business even when they were never contacted or given an opportunity to win the business.

Now, they will tell you that you should follow up on your routes to get a chance, but there's the other catch. The moment you do you just got charged for the contact. Thumbtack started out doping business fairly and then things started to change as they got greedier and greedier. I am all for sustainable and profitable business, but not at the expense of the customers who are making you profitable. Thumbtack forgets that their customer is the Pro, that is who pays them, not the Pro's potential customer. I have tried to talk to Thumbtack about this issue but they continually talk around the issue and find every way possible to tell you that they are justified in their business practice. I have been using Thumbtack since December of 2010. I have always felt they are very confused about who the customer is. The customer in their business model is myself and countless others that pay them for leads. The consumer that creates an opportunity pays nothing and yet, the consumer is what they are more concerned about. I understand they have to appeal to the consumer, but this new model is not forthcoming about what the fees are. Prior to their changes, you had the option of not pursuing a lead based on what Thumbtack magically calculated for the opportunity. Now, you find out after the submission, which brings back my original issue with them and their confusion of who is the customer. They can have millions of people submit free leads, but if I and countless others (the actual paying customers) pass on the leads or outright stop using Thumbtack, then how are they expecting to generate revenue?

I have also tried to help them improve their system, but any suggestion was ignored as it would mean less revenue... such as if I am paying for a lead, then it should be mandatory that I get either an e-mail address or a phone number as part of the lead. I have paid for hundreds of leads that I paid for and the "consumer" read, but never responded to, thus it is a paid opportunity. This purposeful oversight on their end in my opinion creates an environment that could easily allow for the creation of fake leads as there is no ability to actually find out if the lead was legit to begin with.

Yesterday I received a "warm lead" for a commercial job which I was interested about. I message the potential client selecting the category "More information needed for pricing" so I could better prepare a quote. The client responded with better details for the job. I almost immediately received an email from Thumbtack that I had been charged $45 for the quote.

I contacted support and chatted with a rep. I was told I was charged for this request because they consider it a successful introduction to a customer. Last month I quoted two commercial jobs thru Thumbtack and was charged a total of $8.35 for both quotes. I explained to the rep that this was not a quote, but a request for info. I was told when the customer replies, message you, calls you, books an appointment, or hires you right away then you get charged. I asked if I am not awarded the job by the client is the $45 in refunded. I was told it does not qualify for a refund. I told the rep that the Pro should be charged until the client awards the job to the Pro. They recently changed their policy where quotes are free. Thumbtack does not stop this practice and charges regardless if it’s fraud or not. As a Pro I’m losing money weekly on fake and false requests. Thumbtack created auto responses to force more charges on Pros saying people were overwhelmed with 5 quotes at the time but now have up to 15 Pros sending quotes still using the auto response for fraudulent charges.

Overall, Thumbtack could be a great place to pick up extra jobs for a lot of professionals. With their current setup, however, it's just a great way to throw money out the window. I don't necessarily agree that they use bots to generate higher revenues. I do believe their job request form on the customer side is far too easy and you end up getting more customers looking for quotes out of curiosity vs actually looking for a job to be completed. If someone is serious about hiring a pro to do work for them, they won't likely mind entering in details about the project they're looking to have done.

The other major issue is that you are charged a fee as soon as a "customer" reads your first response or estimate. It's very rare that a first response is not read by the so called "customer", whether they're actually looking to hire or just wanting to get ideas of price. Considering the majority of request seem to be for people looking to get ideas of price, that means you as a pro lose the majority of your money on wasted bids.

Example: Person is curious how much it will cost to paint 3 rooms in their home. They find Thumbtack online, select a few "details" from drop down menus, enter an e-mail, and send their request. The request pops up on the pro side, the charge is $18. The pro responds asking for more info (often the case as it's hard to give an accurate estimate with minimal details) and offering to come out for an estimate. The "customer" receives the response, opens it, and then moves on to the next response because they're not really looking to have someone come out for anything. The pro is out $18 for a lead that was never really a lead.

Advice: Thumbtack is still useful, but would not expect to use it without taking initial loses. You do end up getting solid leads that lead to real jobs and this generally pays off the money lost on empty leads. There is an option for customers when filling out their request to enter details about their job. If they're unwilling to enter anything in that space, make your own decision as to whether that person is really taking the time to find a pro to hire or just looking for quick quotes because they're window shopping. Bottom line, plenty of potential to connect with real customers and make a profit. Also plenty of room for improvement to make it more pro friendly. You can make money on Thumbtack, but you have to be patient and realize you're going to toss some money out for absolutely nothing more often than not.

I signed up for Thumbtack thinking it would be a great way to find some customers for some miscellaneous jobs to make money until I find new employment. I quickly realized how much this site is a scam. They charge you not each time you land a job through their “service”, but each time you send or receive a new message, & it’s not cheap. You set a “weekly budget” which allows you a certain number of new messages. The minimum you can choose is $15 per week which gets you “1-2 new customers”.

Once you’ve sent/received your maximum for the week, you have to wait until a new week to send/receive another 1-2, unless you increase your “budget”. So basically you could end up spending a minimum of $60 in one month for a maximum of 8 messages to/from new customers, but you may never actually land a job & even if you do, it likely won’t be worth the $60 you spent to get it. At that rate you’re paying TO work not getting paid to work. Also, anyone can sign up for the site so anyone can message you & act like they’re interested in your business/work which means the people who run the site can easily be making fake accounts just to message people so they get charged. It’s disgusting. I can’t believe this site hasn’t been shut down yet. Don’t fall for their scam!!!

I listed myself as a Thumbtack Pro for house cleaning and pet sitting. After spending over $200 I have never been hired once! How many of the job requests are fake? Well, Thumbtack's own video about how to increase your chances of getting hired tells you to create job requests on Thumbtack so that you can "experience what the customer experiences." All of those become fake bids! Also, when you bid it will tell you "Pro's contacted: 0" but what that really means is that any number of pro's bid the job but that the client (or fake client) only contacted one. So there I am bidding away thinking I am the only pro for that job only to find out that over a dozen other pros have already bid.

I tried using Instant Match and having Thumbtack set all of my prices to match what they considered standard for my area (rates like $200 for a deep clean of a 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom house including interior windows, fridge, and oven cleaning - all bid sight unseen) and despite those low rates and them auto sending my bid to over 30 requests I never received a single inquiry about my services. In another case, a woman who is a hoarder with mental health issues requested house cleaning help but after accepting my bid it turned out she needed hoarder help including multiple trips to the donation center. Well house cleaners aren't equipped or insured to handle the mental health aspects of a hoarder situation and so I had to decline that job.

The woman then gave me a 3 star review even though I never worked for her. Thumbtack's response? “People are allowed to review you based on the hiring experience." Oh and even after I reported this woman to Thumbtack, they still didn't de-activate her account and so she posted requests a few more times - each time wasting $11 in a bidder's money and a ton bid on each post. Thumbtack claims they know what variables help pro's get hired - having more reviews on your profile, having more photos, etc., but when you ask them a basic statistic like "How many requests actually ever hire someone?" they can't tell you.

Lastly, this kind of service does a disservice to house cleaning professionals. A normal client/cleaner relationship should be done on a regular basis where the cleaner doesn't have to reinvent the wheel during each visit. Cleaning is very back breaking work - I'd love any staff person at Thumbtack to try going in to clean a 5 bedroom house "just once" sight unseen for $200 then have that client allow their dirt to build up again for months before hiring another $200 cleaner to dig the mess out again. These poor cleaners who accept these jobs are ending up working for minimum wage - certainly not the goal in joining the house cleaning profession.

Unbelievable. Getting charged constant for responding to quotes. A prospect asks a question, you answer, then you get billed?!! No business, but get billed??? No verification of clients. Time for investigation. What a scam!!!

In March 2018 I put a bid in a for a epoxy floor job with Thumbtack. I had hired one guy to help complete the floor job and had his phone number as a contact that was sent to the customer. After that I received a email stating my Thumbtack account was closed due to an affiliation with another Thumbtack member. What? How would I know this person had a Thumbtack membership and why does that matter? I contacted customer service and they stated they did thorough research. What thorough research? I just signed up and completed the account 4 days prior to this email. It makes no sense. Do not ever do business with this company. It's a rip-off and they are liars!

I have to admit over the last few years booked hundreds of events as a DJ and made a great deal of money. Then as many have said something changed. Phone numbers almost totally disappeared. Price per bid doubled, and instead of five people bidding for jobs 15 were allowed. Thumbtack has become greedy plus fake leads without phone numbers are being scammed to the public. I'm one of the lucky ones. I am taking my business elsewhere with profits made on Thumbtack.

Thumbtack deactivated our account simply because we went on vacation and asked another contractor to monitor our leads while we were away for a few days. They said that other contractor had an acct that was deactivated because of a customer issue, therefore they deactivated our account too. I was told the only way to reactivate was to contact the other company and have them resolve the issue they had. Are you kidding me? Guilt by association? Who conducts business in this manner?

Thumbtack... I used to rave about how you have been an amazing outlet for professionals to find work. I stopped using your services once I noticed unnecessary changes that only hurt the pros, I also got discouraged when I found out a lot of the requests on your site were fake! After a few years I came back to see if the website improved in hopes that I may use it again. To my shock I cannot believe you charge pros an average of 25$ per quote for wedding photography, as that is what I use TT for. Thinking that’s ridiculous, I still decided to give it a try anyway. I figured I would invest a little more, maybe the chances of getting the job was more likely this time around. I spent over 100$ only for requests to be “read”. No one got back to me. I called customer service as I confused your “instant match” and selective response, only when you are not replied to, you would be refunded.

So I found out that was only for “instant match”, which you don’t provide yet for wedding photography. One of your customer representatives tried arguing that I paid for the exposure to clients: No, I have no problem with exposure, I pay and use TT to book, not to give clients an idea of what their requests charge with no serious intent to hire a professional! I decided 100$ wouldn’t be bad if I at least booked 1 wedding of 1500$, that way I wouldn’t feel so bad. So I invested another 400$. I have only booked 1 wedding and 1 portrait session. This is absolute pointless and a complete waste of time and money. I’m going to see what happens in the next month or so, if I end up hearing from any more of the quotes I sent out, but I’m done investing in a company that obviously does not have the pros interest at heart. Here is a suggestion TT, how about this: To improve your business, keep your pros, and still make good $!

Charge those putting in requests: 30$ if they DONT end up hiring one of the pros. That way they are not just “tire turners” not looking to really hire and that way we will know if they are fake requests or not! Do not charge the pros any $ to respond to quotes, instead the pro that ends up hired, you can charge them 15% of the amount agreed between the client and pro. That way all is FAIR and you still make your money.

Go back to only 5 pros responding to a request. Anything more then that is excessive and does not motivate your pros to respond, especially when paying so much only to compete with so many others. Not to mention how annoying that must be for the client to weed out through too many options. That would only overwhelm and annoy me as the client. It’s clear TT’s only interest is to rip everyone off and make money. But I can assure you this will only make you lose your customers, fast. Then you will be making nothing. It’s obvious you have no care for the pros who make you possible. Waiting for a better company to come along that provides better services.

Do not give them your debit/credit card info. Each time potential customer will contact you or you contact potential customer they will charge you fee, even if you don't get the contract. Thumbtack is a scam. Avoid.

Yeah, me too. I noticed the prices went up and the five-pro limit sent to customers--the thing that sold me on the service--has been discontinued. Bad move. I had spent a bit of money with Thumbtack and got some work, but it's not worth my while now. I made contact with two helpline people and asked directly if and why the five-pro limit had been changed. They gave neither yes or no, but spoke immediately about how now my options were unlimited. I was less interested in hearing them spin this as my benefit than in their obvious duck of the question, like they had been drilled in this. In other words, the company knows this is unpopular and is hunkering down in the trenches. Looks to me like a one time useful business has passed into the all-about-money phase.

I am a wedding photographer and have used Thumbtack for several years as a "pro". It was productive and I was selected by many couples to photograph their weddings. Not anymore. What they charge to submit a quote is too high, and I have not been hired through them for over a year. They said that they provide each potential customer with five quotes. I suspect that now it is much more which substantially reduces your chances to get hired but ups their bottom line. Also, some of the requests turned out to be scams. My profile page was once excellent and now is not.

Another thing is that what couples wanted as products were usually their pictures on CD/DVDs. Now, all of a sudden they are asking for proofs and prints. Not knowing how many prints and their sizes it is impossible to render an accurate estimate. There is not a place where they can provide that information. I've complained about this. Never got a response. One used to able to ask a question without paying but they got rid of that. They have changed and not for the better. They now strike me as greedy and dishonest. I recommend that photographers do not use them unless you just want to make a donation.

So Thumbtack for years stressed being the first to contact a customer and customize your quote, well they just threw that into the garbage and at the same time have made it impossible for small companies to compete. They have changed the way you quote starting instant quotes for select clients of theirs. The first step was eliminating the quote count that we used to see such as 4/5, 1/5, etc. Now they send instant quotes to customers from their favorite clients before you can even blink.

They don't tell you how many instant quotes were sent so your bidding thinking I am the first one, wrong. After you bid you will see you're actually the 12th or 13th to bid. Now the worst part those instant quotes cost those clients nothing unless they are contacted, meanwhile us non-instant quotes who were bamboozled to bid not knowing how many bids have been done are still charged if ours is viewed. Thumbtack is now a scam outfit. Stay away if you are not a Thumbtack favorite.

That’s terrible business, they just steal my money! I never had any orders from this site but they charged me more than $150 for nothing! When I found out that I missed $150 from my bank account, I contacted with support of this company. They said that I got some quotes and I had to pay for them. I paid and ask them deactivate my account, they did it. After that I didn’t get any email from them, I deleted their application and tried forget about this guys. BUT, after 1.5 month They charged me $30 extra, for nothing! When I contacted with support, the first guy promised me to return my money back, because after deactivating they not suppose to charge anything extra, but next day another guy texted me, that they will not return my money, because they charge me for 01/11 quote, but I paid once for this quote! They charged me after 1.5 month, (02/20) how is it possible!

I asked some proofs of this quote, they couldn’t send me anything! That’s fraud for sure! I’m afraid to be charged every month for nothing! If somebody have same situation, please, let me know, maybe we can open a case or make something else! Because it is not good business, it supposed to be closed! We have to protect us and our rights from people like these!

The roofing leads given to a pro from Thumbtack are not responsive or when they do respond they are not interested in doing business now as the leads tell the pro who bought them. The leads from the Thumbtack are not verified or screened before they go to a pro for pursue the lead. This is not a good lead service for real pros.

I signed up for Thumbtack and assumed that they would be forthcoming and responsible about how professionals like me are charged. Their charges crept up on me and I never landed a single project. I am STILL getting charged, because potential customers are emailing me with inquiries. They charge me when potential customers make contact with me. I insisted on a credit card refund, but they refuse to refund me - even for a job that the customer CHANGED HER MIND. SHE SWITCHED WHAT SHE WANTED - AND SO I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THE JOB ANYWAY. I was STILL charged.

Thumbtack is a scam. I have written a letter to the main office in San Francisco and I will keep writing letters as long as they do not refund these bogus charges. They are saying they can't do anything about it because I "agreed" to the terms. Their terms are not clear or obvious - probably because if they were they would never have gotten the business off the ground. This is another example where poor website design and bad user communications cause people like me to be duped by their scam. The service is not clear or forthcoming about how these charges happen. I will be seeking legal action if they do not refund my credit card.
