My plumber purchased a Ruud Pacemaker about 8 years ago and installed in my garage, 4 years later it burst from the bottom and flooded my garage, ruining a bunch of personal items. Plumber comes back out and replaces defective heater and puts in a brand new replacement, even though the replacement was free I still had to pay the plumber $350 to install. Well now it's five years later and the replacement had water coming from the top of the water heater, another defective heater, my garage flooded again, personal items ruined again!!
I call claims dept and they tell me there's nothing they can do because my warranty was only good for the life of the first water heater? What? You have defective products that ruin my garage twice and cost me all kinds of money and there's nothing they can do? How about you make a better product!! I had my water pressure checked and it was fine so that's not the issue, the issue is that these water heaters are junk and Do Not Buy!! They are horrible water heaters, made by a company that doesn't stand behind their products, and insert language in their warranties that screw the consumer in the end. I will be looking for other consumers like me that bought these defective products and hopefully get some type of class action lawsuit going cause I know there's a lot more people that feel the same way I do. I now replaced with a Kenmore and it actually heats the water faster than the Ruud.

We purchased a hot water heater in 2011. The water heater is still under warranty. Spoke with Rheem representative. They said the heating elements went bad. They were supposed to send out new ones last Friday, overnight express. Waited until Tuesday to call them back. They said they were in transit. Delay was due to them not shipping until Monday. Waited until the following Monday. Still no heating elements. Checked with Fed Ex - they sent them back to the company... they had the wrong address or something. Tried calling the RHEEM number, 1 800 HEATER3. Try going to warranty department and it says call can not be completed. Call back later. Been trying all day. Very poor customer service. Would recommend staying away from Rheem heaters.

I am a maintenance technician at a town home complex that had 30 Rheem power vent water heaters installed in them 4 years ago. Of the thirty heaters I have had to replace, 21 gas control valves, I have to call because they are under warranty yet. But our tenants have had to wait 7 days for the part to show up to fix the problem. Rheem knows they have a problem because after giving them the model and serial numbers from the I.D. plate, they send out a new valve.
My issues are angry tenants because they have no hot water and I have received repair calls every day of the week, weekends and late in the evenings or very early in the mornings. I even had a replacement gas valve go bad so they have not fixed the problem from what I can see. The operator at the service center told me that I had already replaced a valve on a unit after he checked the serial number, and I told him he was right it was. Now we just built another 24 unit complex here and after begging the owners to not put these in they still put the exact units in here. All I can say is Rheem must give a big push to contractors to keep moving this brand.

I had a new AC system replaced in my home Feb 2014. Since then they have had to replace the outside unit once, replace the inside unit components a couple times, replace the copper tubing from the outside to inside once, and at least 8-9 service calls last year and today will be number 2 this year to get my AC working. The Rheem factory region rep has been to my house at least 3 times trying to figure out what the problems are. The company that installed my system has been in business many years and said this is the first unit that has given them this many headaches. This unit is broke even today as I sit here waiting for the repairman. Even though they have not charged me to keep coming back to fix it, I know this cannot continue to happen. Frustrated in Kempner Texas.

On 4/2/15 at 8 a.m. purchased a Rheem natural gas water heater 40 gal (9 yr tank/parts warranty) from Home Depot (to replace a 6 yr old Whirlpool which warranty was out on and repairs got too much). Although I was guaranteed same day installation with HD's contractor, my order got "lost" somehow so earliest installation was Sat. 4/4 (before Easter Holiday). I picked up the heater at HD, renting their delivery truck and had help loading and unloading (at store and at home) on 4/2. On Sat 4/4 early afternoon the contracted with HD plumbers installed Rheem and got rid of Whirlpool. The bill for deinstallation and reinstallatioon was $893 (includes $250 permit for my county in FL). HD had given me a $1305 quote including cost of deinstallation/reinstallation and Rheem water heater. After install when plumber turned on gas and lit pilot a large flame flew out at his face. He was okay.
The gas chamber was not properly sealed (manufacturing defect). I called Rheem (1 pm 4/4) and the rep needed to speak with plumber. He took pictures and emailed them to Rheem so they could see scorch marks on unit. 10 minutes later I called them back. Rheem told me they couldn't get anyone out there to service it since they didn't have anyone in Gainesville (Jacksonville only - that is my other option if SVC Tech willing to work an hour outside area). They stated they would reimburse me only the "national average" of $250 for deinstallation and reinstallation of a defective one with a new one giving me a warranty claim number. I asked for a manager and he told me they'd give me $300 toward deinstallation and reinstallation (let's see $900 - $300 from Rheem - $250 for permit already in place = $350 additional costs to me plus delivery of new water heater).
Put in a complaint with Rheem with Better Business Bureau and now without hot water for a week. I should not be responsible for costs above and beyond what I paid for the water heater from Home Depot, the old water heater deinstallation and removal and the new water heater replacement due to a major manufacturing defect with potential for harm of plumber and consumer.

I lived in Pennsylvania where most people have Carrier Units... having had 4 different homes, I have never had a problem with an air conditioner unless it hit the 15 yr mark... I am sorry that I purchased a Rheem and will continue to tell others on social media... I am irate that Lindstrom continues to do business with Rheem and I believe that their business will suffer because of unhappy customers if they continue to do so....living on Social Security, I will continue to try to warn others so that they won't have this happen to them...

I purchased the following Rheem unit on 2/20/15 and had it installed on 2/22/15: Rheem Performance Platinum 40 gal. Medium 12 Year 5500/5500-Watt Elements Electric Water Heater with LCD Display, Model # XE40M12EC55U0. What a piece of junk. Paid $448 for the unit and almost $1000 for installation. Upon installation, I got an error code and the unit would not heat up. I called Rheem as explained in the booklet, and without any further discussion or trial, was told the lower thermistor would need to be replaced. In order to do so, they would have to ship me the part within 2 days, which I received in 1, and then their contractor would come to replace. No contractor ever called.
I called back Rheem after receiving the part, and was told to contact their contractor directly. I did that. The guy from the contracting company never received my work order from Rheem, therefore, I was directed back to Rheem. During the conversation, the contractor had nothing but negative things to say about working with them and that his list of clients is so long, it would take 2 to 3 days for them to come out after receiving the work order. After speaking with someone else from Rheem, I was told that I could use my own installer and be reimbursed. Great! I did that. The part was replaced, and the unit still did not work. At this point, I call back Rheem who tells me that they "think" that it may be the panel entirely. They think.. They do not know it will be here in 3 days.
Mind you, I have already been without hot water for 3 days now. It has been below 0 here. I cannot shower, wash my dishes, or wash my hands in warm water. So now, I have to wait 6 days for a new hot water heater to maybe start. According to the managers, there is nothing else they can do and will not replace a brand new unit. I am livid! I cannot believe that such a huge company cannot do anything more for me. I have now spent over $1000 for a new water heater and install that does not work. This is just unacceptable.

The Rheem inducer died after only 2 years, which means it ran only 12 winter/fall months. The original cost of install for the inducer was about $500 for the inducer and $200 for labor. The furnace filter was changed every month during use and the newer furnace was serviced yearly. The inducer was clearly a LEMON. Since the company that installed it claimed their distributor would not get me a replacement after I offered to pay their cost but no profit, (I didn't think it was right they sold me a lemon and then make a bunch of money selling me a replacement), I called Genco. Genco was who the installer of the furnace told me to call because they "now own Rheem/Ruud."
Genco was not even remotely willing to help.... much like most reviews I read about Rheem/Ruud service. You can add Genco to the poor customer service list with Rheem/Ruud. Just bought a new inducer online for $210..... so I can get my furnace working again. The contracting company said the cheapest they could get one for from their distributor was $367..... What a racket!

Worked for three weeks, now new error code.
Call Rheem customer service again and get the runaround from them for twenty minutes. Doing everything they possibly can to not service their customers and their "Made in the USA" products. Sending out yet another part and tech. Three more days without hot water. Really? With a unit not even a month old? Do yourself a favor, this company does not deserve your business. We installed a new Rheem Heat Pump rheem heat pump 13PJA18A01 in June of 2011 in a high end condo. From the very start we had problems with the A/C not working. The contractor came back about 6 times trying to resolve the issue, adding more freon, etc. Then he stopped taking my calls. I was forced to hire a new HVAC person and they found a leak in the heat pump coils and believed it came that way from the factory. I contacted Rheem by email and phone and they said that would never happen that my HVAC installer must of damaged the unit so will not pay for the repair $330 or the very high electric bill.
Next a heat relay in the air handler went out, then the heat expansion valve, then the coils need replaced in the air handler. My contractor told me the coils was something he was not surprised about because that was a known factory defect and he has replaced every coil in every unit he has installed...they fail with in 2-3 years. I called Rheem and asked at what point is this unit considered a lemon, but they just blamed it on my original installer. Besides all the repair bills, the electric bills have been outrageous. I have already reimbursed my tenants $1200 for high bills due to the heat pump not working properly. I have also paid about $500 extra in electric before the condo became a rental. Last week, I just got a call from my tenant that his last electric bill was $560.
The condo is 1190 sq ft in Louisville Ky. I have a 100 year old house with old windows and a 25 year old gas furnace and 4 dogs that go in and out all day. My house is 3700 sq ft and my bill in comparison was $485. Of course I called the HVAC people, and this time could find nothing wrong. They suggested that I might be better off replacing the unit since it seems to be a lemon. It is only 3.5 years old and every time I get it repaired I am hopeful that it will work. I have no more hope.

I purchased a 30-gallon Rheem water heater on Black Friday 2014. And it worked fine for about 45 days. Then I had to light the pilot light for the first time. So the heater worked for several day after. Then I had to light the pilot again and it worked for several more days, again. Thereafter, the pilot light had to be lit, but then would only stay on less than an hour. Then I lit again. The next day it was out. So I called tech support and they ask for pictures of install. I send.
By this time, I call my plumber who installed unit. He could not get it going. So I call tech support again, they say thermal couple is bad and they send one. Their plumber comes out to install and the darn heater still won't light. So he call company and tells them it's the igniter switch wire is bad, they send that out. Their plumber comes back, installs switch, gets the heater going. Within an hour, it's back out. So I call tech support yet again, the guy says it's the control now, so he'll send that. Now it won't light, so hot water. This has been a nightmare. I will not buy another unit from this company, this has been hell. Stay away, you won't regret it.

Long story short, back in 2010 I had the chance to have a brand spanking new Rheem oil burner installed for free to replace a very good, reliable and well-running oil burner, which was installed way back in 1979 as a new unit and never had a problem with it. Boy do I wish that I still had that unit, over this four-year old piece of junk. It might have been a little tired, as I was told, but so what, after 31 years - what do you expect - it's normal wear and tear. From day one, upon the installation of this Rheem unit, it has been a problem with the smell of raw, unburned oil coming up through the heating vents. It doesn't happen all of the time, but it shouldn't be happening at all. It is nasty when this happens and you never know when it will strike again. I have contacted the clowns who installed this unit, of course they portray "the three stooges 21st century style" - they are totally clueless in Massachusetts. I won't even allow them into my house for a third time.
I contacted the public assistance agency who was instrumental in my receiving this wonderful product. I have called them only six times in the last four years concerning this problem. I am told consistently by the same person, each time, that there is nothing that they can do about it. I have asked them if anyone else of the approximately 120 homes that have had these furnaces installed has had this problem with their unit. I am told no, that I am the only one. I suppose that this is possible, but a bit unlikely, I feel. Even though this agency takes the lowest bidder, I don't know who or what to believe, or not.
I have only contacted Rheem four times in the last year and you never hear back. So now I am thinking BBB, possibly FTC, or some other applicable agency. Maybe sue Rheem, the installer, or the assistance agency. It is hard when you don't know what to do. I suppose that I could go to one of my elected officials, I am so sure that these underpaid $120,000.00 per year cronies are real interested in helping out with something like this. Thanks for reading this.

My old hot water heater started leaking and needed to be replaced immediately. I went to Home Depot and got a screaming deal on a Rheem ECO180DVN tankless. We looked through the manual at the installation instructions as although the associate said that the venting was included, we thought that we had better check. It wasn't and HD didn't have one in stock. Oh well, Rheem is a big name, and there was surely one in a city of 1.2 million.
I have to admit that installing the tankless was a piece of cake. What took all the time was re-routing the plumbing and gas lines to the new location. The new heater saves a lot of space. However, I did not have the vent kit, so I thought that I could get by with the old venting system which had concentric piping, similar to what Rheem has. The thing is, Rheem has an odd size piping system, and the connection to the heater was entirely different, with a pipe that slips into the inner connection (exhaust), instead of a slip over arrangement with a pipe clamp like everyone else.
I couldn't fire up the heater the first day because I didn't have a means to connect the exhaust. I went to 5 different wholesalers to try and find the proper vent system. All of them asked for the Rheem part number for the vent system which Rheem doesn't even provide in the manual. They told me that they would contact Rheem and see if the thing was even available anymore as they had checked stock in Canada and there wasn't one in the country!!! I got a call back and was told that Rheem had one in the US and would ship it to the wholesaler, cost unknown to me. I am expecting it will be very expensive.
In the time being, I machined an adapter to snuggly fit a 3" copper pipe to the exhaust fitting, and coupled the 3" vent line to this, clamped the pipe in place and wrapped the connection with aluminum duct tape. This seems to work, but if the house catches fire, I am sure that the insurance company won't be happy. Needless to say, there is a gas and CO2 detector, plus a smoke alarm installed in the furnace room!!
Now, I have hot water, but from time to time, the heater starts vibrating so badly it sounds like a semi-trailer driving down a rumble strip on the highway. It happens usually when there is a large volume of water being used, such as filling up a bathtub. I did manage to download a service manual for this heater, but there is no mention of this problem. I haven't called Rheem as after reading the comments here, it doesn't seem likely that I will get any useful info.

I needed to purchase a new natural gas water heater because my Rheem / Rudd brand started leaking. It was installed in 1992 so I figured I couldn't go wrong buying another Rheem. Bought it at the big box store, took it home and had it installed within an hour. I tried to start it up using the easy start system, but the pilot would not stay lit. They idiot proof these new water heaters so you can't actually access anything or complete any kind of small repair.
All over the box, the tank, and instruction manual it says that I can't return the unit to the store. I have to call their 1800 number and get assistance. This is where things get interesting. I called the number and explained what was wrong. The support person walks me through the same stuff that's written in the instruction manual. He comes to the conclusion that the unit is defective and tells me a work order will be created and within one day someone will call me.
Of course a day passes and no one calls me. So I call Rheem and they tell me that a local company has the work order. Called the local company and they tell me that they don't have the part to fix the tank and they can’t come out until Rheem sends ME the part. I call Rheem, and of course they tell me that they won't send me the part and that the local company has to first come out and diagnose the problem. At this point I am angry and explain to them that it is the middle of winter, I have two small kids and just want hot water.
I ask if I can return the tank to the store and they tell that they won't authorize a return until the unit gets diagnosed. I call the local company back and they tell me that Rheem is giving me the run around and that the part is probably on back order so it could be weeks before I get the problem solved. He tells me I would be better off dealing with the big box store. I called the big box store and explained the situation and they agreed to take the unit back as defective. The big box store and the local company apologized. Rheem were jerks. I hope the company goes bankrupt and all of their support people lose their jobs and have to go without hot water.

Rheem Marathon water heaters come with a lifetime warranty. A licensed plumber installed this water heater just under a year ago. The heater began making loud noises, like a metal object was hitting another piece of metal. I called the same plumber back to check on the noise. He examined the heater thoroughly and found nothing that would have caused this problem to arise. He asked me to call Rheem Customer Service to see if they could explain and offer a solution to the noise. (The noise has no relation to water use, time of day, or any other variable I could think of).
My first call was answered by Lori, who asked for my serial number, then told me to adjust the flue baffle and that would eliminate the noise. She was in a hurry to get off the call. The electric Marathon has no baffle. My second call was answered by Valerie, who also took my serial number. I specifically told her the heater was electric. She then told me to take off the two covers on the front, determine which light was on when the noise occurred, then call her back with the information. I took off the covers to find that there are no lights. She was also interested in ending the call. My third call was answered by Nick, who apologized for the other two agents of Rheem, which he could see from the record of calls I had made previously. He suggested draining the tank to see if that would eliminate the noise. I asked the plumber about this and he stated that there would be no need to drain the tank given its age. So I am left with either calling Rheem yet again for what appears to be sketchy advise or learning to live with the noise.
Rheem's Customer Service seems to be "time on the phone" driven: when you get a trouble call, give some kind of answer and get off the phone as soon as possible. Not a good system to encourage customers to buy any Rheem product in the future. Their responses to my problem seem to treat the Lifetime Warranty as a mere piece of paper used as a sales aid only. Beware of Rheem products!

Fraser did come out right away and determined that the control panel was not working again. The water pipes were freezing and despite our small heaters, we had to call in a restoration company to heat the basement so the pipes wouldn't break at $150.00m call out plus $35.00 per day. It would seem that we have a very inferior product. Our old furnace was 30 years old and we never had any problems. Thirty below is very cold and we have had enough. Fifth call: After a long time on hold they told me it had not shipped yet. Now advised it would arrive the day after Thanksgiving. I asked where I could buy the part locally (at my own expense). Tech support told me they don't have that info. I argued they MUST at least know who their wholesale distributor is in Maryland so I could locate the part and advise their local plumber that the part is available or pick it up and have it available at my home for him to install. Rheem tech support guy just kept repeating they don't have that info. I asked him to do me the favor of calling their parts division to find out. Told me they don't have the info necessary to make that call within their own company.
I elevated the matter to a supervisor. He just kept repeating they are the tech support department and don't have the info necessary to contact the parts division. No rationale. Just kept repeating, "We are just tech support. We don't have that information" over and over again as if purposely trying to irritate me. I asked to elevate it one level higher - just to find out who is the local parts distributor. Was left on hold for 35 minutes before I hung up. The call wasted more than an hour.
Calls the prior day amounted to nearly two hours. Then I called 8 plumbers and 6 supply companies around the state. Was told by several of them that no company stocks Rheem water heater parts. It became clear why Rheem tech support refused to provide the name of any wholesaler or retailer of parts in Maryland and simply kept repeating, "We are just tech support. We don't have that information". There are no parts wholesalers nor dealers who carry Rheem water heater parts - at least in Maryland and Virginia. I'm hoping the part will arrive the Friday after Thanksgiving and that it can be installed the same day. Otherwise, we will have gone an entire week without hot water due to a defective new water heater and desperately horrible customer service.

We bought a water heater in 2009. 2014 - realized it was leaking all over the garage. Called the big box store from which we purchased and was told we would only get $140.00 credit towards a new water heater. To my understanding GE and Rheem are no longer affiliated so the warranty becomes pro-rated. Therefore the 12 year warranty we thought we were getting is no longer good. I called the 800 number on the water heater and talked to 3 different people. 2 were very rude. The last lady I spoke to gave me an address to write a letter and complain. If there is a class action lawsuit in the works, I would love to be part of it. Rheem owes me $490.00.

In October of 2010, we replaced our entire Heating and Air Units to Rheem. In July of 2011, had to call because it was not cooling. The owner of the service company came out and repaired whatever it was. This past summer, unit quit cooling. The owner came out, filled with freon, lasted 24 hours. He and an employee came out and said it came from the factory with a hole in the coil. They again filled with freon and at this time talked as if they had ordered coil but would not be in for awhile. I think they had more important clients so I was on back burner until October. The owner then said he would bill me and at that time I expressed that I was not happy due to the fact that they acknowledged that it came from the factory in that condition, with a hole in the coil. He said it would not be much. Famous last words from him, I have now received a bill for $526.00 for labor. REALLY! If I could rewind, I would not choose Rheem.

Our unit is under warranty and needs to be replaced. Rheem did send us the vent kit, but no heater. We have called customer service. The first two ladies we spoke to were nice then we were transferred to another lady that was quite rude and absolutely no help at all. She told us that we need to contact the parts service department, our problem isn't HER problem. On the phone for hours with no results. Our plumber is at his wit's end dealing with this company. We were told to go to Menard's and purchase a new heater ourselves and Rheem would reimburse us for the cost. Yeah right! Rheem needs to send the unit, because I do not trust that they will reimburse us after all the trouble we have had getting anything out of them. We are still under warranty! We have company coming for Thanksgiving and no hot water! I'm snapping and so sorry we ever went with Rheem. We are so disappointed in this company and the way they treat their customers. They replaced it and 10 minutes later the unit shut down again. Now they are saying that the TXV on the heat pump is causing to short cycle on heat - will again be out Labor of $625. The Rheem tankless water heater is nothing but trouble. We have had constant failure of the unit since it was purchased. I have been on the phone with customer service several times trying to self diagnose the problem along with one of their representatives. The same error code keeps coming up time after time and I can't seem to find any plumber who will work on this unit, apparently because it is such a defective POS that no one wants to touch it. We have even had our gas meter upgraded for a larger one, but the tankless continues to fail. I am hoping to participate in a class action lawsuit against Rheem. The unit is clearly defective and they have offered no solution.
In the meantime our family continues to be without hot water several day a week, as paying to have the entire water heater replaced is out of our budget at the time. Considering we spent around $2,500 for it(including installation) 2 years ago, it is quite a disappointment that the company will not even recommend someone for repairs.

As part of a major remodel project, which included new plumbing and gas lines, we had a Rheem tankless water heater installed in the summer of 2012. In about 7 months we began to have trouble. When the hot water was turned on somewhere in the house, the tank would attempt to fire up but wouldn't actually ignite, and then the unit would flash an error code #11. The person needing hot water would wait and wait for it but would never get it. This happened more and more frequently. The plumber who installed it sent a Rheem rep out who blamed it on insufficient gas pressure, without actually testing the pressure. HVAC guy said we had large supply line to the unit. Rheem manual (only obtainable online) was of no help.
Finally after months of a continually worsening problem, a person on the Rheem help line told us it was probably dirty ignition coils. She gave us instructions on opening up the unit and gently cleaning the fragile coils. Now we have to do this complicated process every few months. Very annoying! And the most frustrating thing is that my friends with other brands of tankless heaters have never had to do anything to theirs after many years and they LOVE their tankless heater. I HATE mine!

Rheem offered me a whopping $250 credit to apply to the repair but I can't get anyone to respond to me from the company to get the credit to the dealer that is doing the repair.
I clearly got a factory lemon from Rheem and they just don't care. Major part welds cracking and components breaking this early on in the life of the unit is simply poor craftsmanship and exhibits a lack of pride in manufacturing quality components. Recently I had the same problem and another tech from the same company came out and told me it has a leak and he put 5lbs of 410 refrigerant in to fix the problem. He stated the problem was due to low pressure, that is why the unit did not cool and the reason why it turned on and off.
Now I am 4 months over the 5 year warranty period, so I am told by the contractor and Rheem will not replace that portion as that is where the leak is without me paying for the cost of the part plus labor. I called the company to see if I could at least get the warranty extended to cover the new part and to cover the unit in case there was other damage from the failure of their product. THEY SAID ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Obviously they don't even believe in their own products. ONCE AGAIN... DO NOT BUY RHEEM.

I posted a complaint on here on September 19, 2013 after having to have Freon replaced in my unit for the second time (summer of 2012 & Sept. 19, 2013). The unit was placed in service on 4-25-2011. It is now 4-11-2014 and the blower motor is out after the unit ran on a prolonged base because the condenser shut off due to LOW FREON. It now appears that we will need to have the Freon recharged and the blower motor replaced.
It is NOT acceptable to have to spend $300 - $1,000 every summer to keep an AC running - ESPECIALLY one that is less than 5 years old. It seems that Rheem will replace the coils (that they know leak Freon) IF the customer pays to have a technician make a service call, place the coils in water for several days to locate the leak and they are able to verify it to Rheem's standards. Then, the customer must pay to have the technician make another service call to replace the coils. ALL Labor is on the customer, not to mention the fact that the customer is without a unit for several days during the process! Shame on Rheem! They know of this problem, but are doing nothing to make it right.

Leaking valves, leaking evaporator coils, blown protection valve and now a shorted compressor.....all fixed under warranty, but the Rheem Warranty team has never replied to the website posting..... Tried customer service and got a reply from Troy ** (479-648-4900) who passed me along to their distributor on warranty items, as the backlog of parts was very time consuming.....
This product is not a quality build or a quality design. The operating costs far exceed the previous unit and the service calls are expensive due to the Warranty not covering FREON loss or the Labor to remove the defective RHEEM products and install warranty parts..... Very disappointed with Rheem...... Will move over to their competitor on the next failure.....expecting that will be Sept - November of 2014.....

He said the company knows of the problem but has not come up with a permanent fix. We feel this is a design/ workmanship problem and we should get a new different furnace. Had a water heater installed approx. 3 months ago. 3 weeks ago it started tripping the circuit breaker. After inspection, we found the insulation around the lower heating coil was soaked so had the lower heating coil replaced and dried everything out. Last week it started doing it again. Upon closer inspection they found the tank was leaking higher up and was irreparable. When I spoke with Rheem customer service I requested to speak with the service rep's supervisor/manager who told me in a flat tone that while Rheem would cover the part and materials they did not have to cover the cost of labor. When asked why I should have to cover the labor cost to replace a 3 month old unit that only needs replacing due to a fault that is their responsibility, I was given the same flat-toned scripted response. I assured them if Rheem was not going to be flexible enough to work with its customers when the cost should rightly fall to them then I would not waste another cent with them and ensure anyone I encountered knew why.
All work done by a licensed/certified/bonded contractor that I've done business with for many years and has an impeccable reputation. This is not my first encounter with Rheem but it is also nothing different. I'm usually a forgiving person but things like repetitive bad customer service stick with me for a long time and though this incident may cost me a couple hundred dollars I will do my best to ensure it cost them as much as possible in lost customers. RPMC 060JAZ Heat pump 10 SEER R22 15 yrs old - I have been researching/replacing this system because 3 leaks were found. 1 in the "A" coil upstairs, 1 in the coils outside and one where the over pressure valve had been replaced 1 1/2 years ago. The only other repairs I have had to do on the system are 1) fan and start-up capacitor, 2) compressor start-up capacitor and 3) relay (twice). I mentioned I had the overpressure switch replaced due to failure. Other than the overpressure switch I replaced all other parts and I kept the system maintained except for every 3rd year I had an A/C company come and do a check up so they could check freon level.
The first 7 years the system was trouble free, wash the lint and debris off the coils outside, keep the blower clean upstairs and keep the filters clean till the outside unit fan died. Replaced the fan, start-up capacitor and the compressor start-up capacitor and relay myself. Had no trouble until year 13 when the overpressure switch went bad. Please NOTE: every 3rd year there was a slight top off of R22 of about 1 lb. Not bad. That is an average. Now in year 15, I need about 12 lbs and 3 leaks fixed with no guarantee that 2 of them can stay fixed due to their location and my system being a heat pump and the temp variations. They tried to sell me on Carrier. I have researched Carrier and they are tops in SEER rating, but I am finding out not good with the customer. But also have found that to be true with some of the complaints on all of them, but found Rheem to have the least complaints.
Most of the complaints I have read deal with they will not cover the lost freon on warranty repair. I have researched every company for 2 days now and NONE of them do. The customer has to pay for the freon for warranty repairs as I have done in the past so accept it, and move on as it is policy of all companies I have researched if it has been in place for a year as most of the complaints I have read indicate. I am thinking 90% about sticking with Rheem as I had good luck with it but the unit I have is not made anymore. Still more research to do.

It will start to work then shut off and produce only cold water. We have done all the preventive maintenance required, replaced a gas line, and had a plumber clean the burner unit. The water heater worked for about a month after she cleaned the burner, then the same problem occurred again, always a c2-11 error. Tech support sent us a new burner unit, which we had installed only to have the problem continue. I just got off the phone with tech support again and went through the diagnostic procedure again. I couldn't get the problem to replicate and tech support told me that I didn't have a problem because it is working and if the problem happens again I should call them when it happens wtf!!!!
While talking to tech support the hot water quit finally and she told me that it was my problem because they sent me a new burner unit and that should have fixed the problem or it was the gas company's fault. This water heater worked perfectly for four years and worked fine for a month after the burners were cleaned, but now it's a gas problem. We have other gas appliances and all are working fine. I didn't do a lot of research before we went with a tankless water heater and that is my fault, but hopefully someone is reading this now and will avoid Rheem/Richmond. He said that the heater is leaking from the top and fills up the blower and shuts off the exhaust. There as a safety will not turn on the burner. He removed the water from the blower and the heater worked for two weeks. Loaded up with water again. I never was given a copy of the warranty, so I did not know about the six years expected life on this expensive heater. I have had two other homes and never had a water heater that did not last 15 to 20 years and they did not cost $800+.
I called Rheem, but warranty is no more, which would not have made any difference, from what I read from others that had the same model 41VRP4ON, and got no response. My heater has been fixed again and is expected to run for another two weeks, until the blower fills up again. When I finally give up on it, the service man says he is going to take it apart and expects poor welding by the manufacturer where the pipes goes into the top. No heater would leak from the top in less that 6 years if it was properly put together and inspected. I found one on Amazon and got free shipping on it. It arrived in great condition. I installed it and sure enough the anode rod cap was cracked through the threads and leaked. This was caused by the suspended weight during shipping. Rheem refused to warranty the part, said it was not a part they warrantied. Unreal, I contacted Amazon and they said they would refund the purchase price for the part. They did (I love Amazon). After 3 years my daughter turned up the tank to midway (C) on the thermostat. Within 2 days the top of the tank sunk in 2" and made it too dangerous to continue using it.
After several calls and pictures sent to Rheem they agreed to warranty it (good til 2018). The only problem was NO dealer would handle warranty claim because they didn't install it. I contacted Rheem again with no response. I then filed a Better Business Bureau complaint for a full refund due to the fact I had to drive 50 miles and buy another brand tank to install so my family would have hot water. Rheem again played their delay game and wanted to start the warranty exchange process all over again. I replied I do not want a tank, I have one. I want a refund. They refused.
Rheem has to have the worst customer service in the entire business world. NEVER BUY A RHEEM PRODUCT. My former 50 gallon hot water heater (23 years old) never ran out of hot water, even when a washing machine or dishwasher and shower were running at same time. Rheem customer service said it was "normal" for this to happen and refused to send out a service technician to check out the unit. The plumber said he can't do anything else and he has not had this complaint from other customers (which indicates something is wrong with mine).
Rheem said a 50 gallon unit only has 35 gallons of hot water at a time (using 70%) because new, cold water is filling the tank as the hot water empties out. Showers use 2.5 gallons per minute. So at 14 minutes, I should run out of hot water. But I take a warm shower, not a hot one! I am not using all 35-50 gallons of hot water at one time! It infuriates me that Rheem won't consider that their product is defective and send out a rep to look at my unit. I do not recommend Rheem and will never purchase their products again.

It was not an emergency, but the unit was under warranty and did not do what was supposed to do. After 3 months, the contractor comes and tries to call the dealer in order to get support from them as the contractor did not know what to do (despite the fact it seems a very simple setting). I took 2 days off, and every day the contractor cannot reach the dealer's technician despite the fact that this was scheduled in advance.
I was frustrated and tried to send a complaint directly to Rheem. We replaced blown igniter again and blown board again. The plumber I had working on it said the unit was poorly designed. I can't believe what a hunk of junk this unit is. On top of that, I could not buy parts on the west coast. I had to have them shipped next day from Boston. It really is bad business to have a product that you can't even get parts for. A restaurant can't run without hot water, so it needs to be easy to repair. But to only last for 3 years and cost $6,000 is totally unacceptable. That I put $900 in parts and the unit still only worked for a couple of days is crap!
So I had to take your unit out and replace it with another one, which cost me a lot of time and money ($5,000). It also caused my business to suffer from having to close kitchen because of your faulty product design. You would think for all that money this unit would work much better than it does. For the igniter to blow and destroy the motherboard, that’s a poor design. The unit oozed an oily substance and the power quit halfway through a cycle (fun times when taking a shower). They said to send the fail code and I have not heard anything back for more than 10 days (I had included photos also). The unit also emitted an oily substance that beaded up and so now I'm reluctant to use it at all. Not having a potable water source in a suburban home is a real downer. I'm taking water samples to the County Water Health Department tomorrow to see what substance is in the water.
The installer I hired has now passed on doing anything further, left the job, cleaned up his mess and waived his installation fee for fear that he might be linked to this product. Rheem has admitted that the unit is not in production and out of warranty. It's another reason to never buy things like this on eBay. Based on the other posts on this site, Rheem is displaying behavior that needs to be well publicized to avoid rewarding this kind of corporate behavior to those of us in the consuming public. It is a good number for a low quality heating and cooling products business. Rheem is not a good company because they sell lemons for heat pumps. I had to spend more than $2,000.00 for a 3 years old unit in repair labor and R-410A. The unit had the reversion valve replaced before (only parts are covered by the Rheem warranty), more than a year ago, and now it needs the txv to be replaced. The unit was still leaking R-410A according to one HVAC technician that recharged the unit couple times. The contractor (Rolph HVAC from Seaford, Delaware) that installed our heat pump does not do business with Rheem, according to the owner/representative, because of bad experiences with that company.
When I talked with the customer service representative from Rheem to complain about our heat pump, she said that Rheem will replace the part that is on warranty, but labor costs are between the customer and the installer. I had to explain to her that because of a defective unit from her company (Rheem), I had to spend money every year on repairs for a new unit that is only 3 years old and that should not be that way. This unit should be working without any issues for many years and should not be like what it is now, a money waster. The customer representative was helpless, and she referred me back to the company (who are making money out of this situation, of course) that installed the unit. This is not right - selling and installing defective units so the customer have to pay for repairs and labor for a brand new cheap Chinese heat pump unit. Actually, as far as the $1,680 repair quote was concerned, you can buy an entire new heater for $1,455. Can you say repair fraud? Here's the persistent problem: The gas valve/controller, made by Robertshaw Controls is a POS. I've since had two replacements fail, each within two weeks of installation. Rheem, to their credit, has helped me validate the failures, warrantied the part both times and had a no-charge replacement at my door in 36 hours. Unfortunately, even if this last one is finally good, it'll be a year before I get up in the morning and not worry whether or not we'll have hot showers.

We had a hot water heater for 16 years in our home. We replaced it with a new Rheem/Ruud water heater this March. One month after installation, there was no hot water, an element burned out and our plumber replaced it. Then a couple months later - no hot water again. For three weeks, we have been without hot water. We've called Rheem/Rudd maybe 20 times. They've sent out their own Rheem certified plumber to check it. He replaced some parts. We still have no hot water - three weeks and counting. BTW - I'm six months pregnant and can't sterilize dishes, wash clothes, etc. Every time I talk to Rheem/Ruud, they tell me it's not the hot water heater, yet their plumber says it is the hot water heater. Now they asked us to do our own tests on the machine! They don't want to send out another plumber. The customer service is terrible! The heater is under warranty - they don't care. All they care about is spending money to send out a plumber. It's horrible. We are just so unhappy with the service. Still today, we have no hot water.

It was a steady stream from the internal tank on the bottom. I called the company and spoke with Daniel ** and he said they could replace it but basically I was on my own. It didn't matter that it had caused some structural damage to the walls or molding. They wouldn't send a representative to inspect the unit. We are in the restaurant business and would have to close. I found the part at an appliance part house for $44 and hired a company to pick it up and bring to my store for $112, then called the company that sold and installed the heater (United Plumbing - Woodland Hills, CA) and they sent out a tech and it took about 30 minutes and I was charged an additional $475. I called Rheem and was told to read the fine print. They would only cover the whole unit if it had to be replaced and if it could be repaired like my unit did, it would not be covered.

I watched the igniter turn red and the gas turned on the burner, lit for a second or two and a click and it shut down and recycled and lit again, this time staying on. This has happened 2 more times. I had an A.O. Smith power vent for 10 years and the only reason I replaced it was because I didn't want to spend $175 on the new power vent that was coming apart. The heater still looked and worked great. My GE/Rheem is just 3 years old and you never know if you will have hot water or not.

Two weeks ago, I had to replace the condenser fan and the reversing valve to the tune of over a thousand dollars. Last Friday, I came home from work and the house was 90 degrees inside. I called my HVAC man and he came out. The blower motor had gone out. Not only did it go out, but the barrel and housing is rusted onto the motor and can't be removed. Parts are not in stock and have to be ordered. I will be without air for a week when the parts get here with an outside average temp of 110 here in Arizona. I wouldn't put another Rheem on my roof if they gave it to me for free. What a piece of crap.
By the time the repairs are done, I will be in this over $2,000. My advice is to stay away from this product and company. If they can't make a product where you don't have to replace almost every major part in it in only 6 years, it’s obvious they don't care about customer satisfaction. This is my opinion. Failure in 5 years and 10 Months and a 6-year warranty not honored: The Rheem water heater was installed when the house was finished in July 2006. The water heater failed in May 2012, having rusted through the bottom. The product was designed to fail shortly after the warranty date. Water heaters used to be considered durable goods, and that level of quality needs to be our expectation, given the nature and cost of the product.
Rheem confirmed that the unit was still covered under warranty. However, the warranty terms and the procedure for replacement are unconscionable to the point where it would be more cost-effective to replace the unit at your own expense. So, we have a non-durable good and a difficulty to enforce warranty. Both of these conditions are illustrative of failure (and indicative of our national culture, which encourages corporate theft through planned obsolensce).
I have sent a certified letter to Rheem on these issues and concerns. Let's see if the company will stand by its products. The reviews on this site and others don't give me much hope in this regard.

We told them to yank the Rheem and give us something that would work. Here is the list: a blower (twice), a valve that went bad, and something with the electronic unit all inside of five years! Sure, the part is covered, but I can't afford this piece of junk. Until this water heater, I had owned three others at various homes over 17 years and never once had a repair. Does Rheem considers 6 years to be the normal working life of their water heater? Read the reviews, then run as fast as you can to find another supplier. At 15 years old, my old water heater was running fine, but I decided it was time to replace it before it died. I contracted for a Rheem Power Vent unit (a requirement in my situation), which made it quite expensive at $1,300 with installation. It lasted 30 months, and died with what turns out to be a common problem with the valve. The installing contractor sent the repair over to a Rheem specified service organization, who was not very responsive. It took me a day to get a call back, and they totally blew off a 3PM to 7PM arrival window scheduled for the next day, and called 8AM the following day (3 days) acting dumb, and said "can we come now?"
They found the failing valve, but only after I stopped him from leaving, when it started up (as it always does), and the repair guy says "see, its working". Sure, just wait 5 minutes for it to start ignition failure recycling every 2 minutes. Finally he saw that, went and got the part, and fixed it. I just got the bill. 3 hours at $125 (should be one hour) and $356 for the "Smart Valve". Sure it's smart for Rheem and the repair guy. I then called Rheem they confirmed that the product is under warranty. They gave me a return number and advised me that I should take the defective heater back to where I purchased it.
The contractor took it back but the distributor where it was originally purchased said that they will not exchange. I called GE/Rheem service line and instructions were given to re-light the pilot. I got it going for only five minutes before shutting off again.
Then, I called Pacific Gas and Electric Company on the next day, 22 Aug 11, for unbiased diagnostic check. PG&E came on 23 Aug 11 and determined that the water heater was properly installed, the air vents were clear and no obstructions but, again, the pilot light failed to sustain or remain lit for more than six minutes.

I purchased/installed a 40 gal GE hot water tank from Home Depot just 1 month ago. It's a model SE40M12AAH, w/12-year warranty, and while it's a GE brand believe the mfg is Rheem.
When the top element is "on" the tank makes a loud hissing noise and you can almost hear it heating the water. This noise is constant when the hot water was just used, or is running. I can't even stand to work down my basement anymore because of this obnoxious unbearable noise. Sure am glad it's not installed on a first floor living area.
I called GE/Rheem technical support and the rep asked me what kind of water supply I have? I told him well water but it's filtered, doesn't have any iron/sulfur/minerals, and is as clear as spring water.
He told me the the top element probably has sediment built up on it and I need to remove it/clean with beach. I told him I've lived here for 26 years, have had 3 hot water tanks, and none of them ever made this loud noise. I also asked how sediment would build up on the top element since if there is any it would build up at the bottom of the tank? He said I will still need to pull the element out and clean w/bleach. I asked him what tool I needed and he said I need a 1 1/2" deep-well socket to remove the element or a plumber's element removal tool. Think this is called a element winch. Regardless, I don't have one and he told me I will need to get one.
The tech did say he would send me a "complementary" replacement top element.
I can't believe after just 1 month of use I'm expected to work on this new hot water tank. Should I expect this every month??
I purchased the more expensive 12 -month warranty hot water tank since I thought it would be better and last longer. It's already turning into a nightmare and wish now I wouldn't have gone with GE/Rheem.
In looking over the warranty there is a 1-year full warranty where they are supposed to send someone out to replace defective parts free of charge. I sure wasn't offered this service and I saw nowhere in the warranty where they mentioned well water may be a problem. It sure wasn't with the other tanks I had including 2 which were Rheem brands.
It should also be noted this tank is listed as a "self-cleaning tank" so how could any "sediment" be building up on the elements already?
They sure don't build them like they used to. I also miss the exterior bottom thermostat control knob for turning down the temp up/down as needed, or down when you are on vacation. Now you have to remove the bottom thermostat cover, and insulation, to turn the temp up/down with a screwdriver.
I've yet to contact Home Depot on these hot water tank problems and it will be interesting to see what they say.
It's kind of ironic Home Depot raised the price on this tank to $366 from $319 a month ago. Nothing like paying $47 more for a hot water tank I'm already having problems with after 1 month of use.

After getting the blah blah runaround, I finally was put in touch with Daniel. He stated that it would be "morally wrong to provide any compensation for their faulty tank." The next day, he left a message saying he was calling to hopefully resolve the issue. When I recalled Rheem, he has on every following call been unavailable and has not called either my cell phone or home number. If this same situation happened to the president of the company, I know for sure that he or she would have had the problem taken care of, no questions asked and certainly at no cost to their selves. If the rule is no help, then I know someone further up the corporate can make the decision to make an exception to the rule ruling. I am not necessarily looking for a large amount of money, simply, that as a good corporate citizen, they would cover the install cost of the replacement tank after three and a half years. So, what do I do about no hot water for four days, while we mail this, and mail that around? Did you ever try telling a nurse that there's no hot water for her? Do you know what part of the bear is sore? I think that this is just a really neat way for Rheem to avoid any warranty coverage that they have.
Hey Rheem, you want to run a business right? Send the sensor out first and require the old one be returned. Or better still, how about some reps that can fix your junk? This is just one more prime example of how bad business has got in the US in the last five years. You'll never get me to buy one of these, or a rude, again.

Please be advised that I am requesting your assistance concerning what I feel to be a defective GE/Rheem hot water heater. Also my licensed plumber does not accept Rheems answer of pressure issues for many reasons. First, there are no other pressure issues within the entire house. Second, all homes in the area have same pressure and I've discussed this matter with my neighbors, and the utility company and no one else has reported pressure issues to the St. Lucie County Water and Utilities. I would hope that you as a company they would want to investigate this matter beyond a few pictures sent via the internet.
I've purchased a replacement and this morning, my licensed plumber installed the replacement. He again today called Rheem and stated that within his 40 years of experience he's only seen this happen once before and it was on a much older model and make of hot water heater. Rheem ignored his explanation and requested for a Rheem representative to investigate beyond a few pictures. We asked this not only for warranty issues but for the safety of other consumers. I would think they (GE/Rheem) would want to investigate for their company's liability and I truly feel I have a faulty and defective product.
You have been sent numerous pictures of our defective hot water heater. As you can see from the photo the bottom of #1102B24278 has expanded from the bottom causing the copper tubing to actually be lifted up. I have been trying since Friday March 12 to seek resolution. Today at 2:45 pm, my plumber spoke to Jose and since that time, I've been calling (cell phone usage) and emailing pics today alone for two hours, not to mention paying for a plumber. I would appreciate your assistance before the pipes burst and flood my garage and/or house.

We moved into our home in December 15, 2003. We had the home built and had 2 hot water heaters installed, one for the kitchen and laundry and one for the bathrooms. Both were Rheem 40-gal with 6-year warranties. In November 2008, the first one failed. Water poured out of the vent on top of the tank. Rheem authorized a replacement tank, but I had to pay over $200 for the installation.
Last week, March 12, 2010, the second failed exactly as the first one, with water pouring out the vent on top of the unit. I called Rheem as the unit is only 3 months out of warranty. They refused to replace the unit under warranty and would not acknowledge a manufacturer defect, which I believe is the case. Both units have a manufacture date of February 2003.
They insisted that it was my fault, as I had not had an annual inspection of the anode rod. They were arrogant and rude and refused to investigate the possibility of a manufacturer defect. Rheem has lost a customer, and I would certainly not recommend their product to anyone else. They do not care about the consumer.

I purchased a Rheem heat pump in May of 2008. All summer I had no problem with the air coditioning, but, as soon as I started using the heating system, I had problems. I called the original contractor that installed the system, E. Wrenn Heat/Air, Scott **. He tried several times over the winter to fix the problem, to no avail. My problem was that the external fan was making a terrible rattling sound and I kept getting a horrible smell through the vents (dirty sock syndrome).
Finally, after consulting with a local Rheem tech., they came to the conclusion that certain parts needed to be replaced. After weeks of waiting and several phone calls about it, I was told by Scott, that he couldn't get cooperation from anyone and they kept telling him that the part hadn't come in. By this time winter was over, so, I decided not to push the issue right now, because even if they did fix it, I wouldn't know til next winter when I used he system. Of course by the next winter, around November 2009, the problem started again.
Again I called Scott. He again tried to look into the problem. Very shortly after that, my external fan totally quit working and nothing but ice cold air was coming through the vents. The only way I could get heat was to use the emergency heat strips. I knew this would run my electric bill up, but, I had no choice. By this time I was dealing with Rheem directly. Problem is they kept giving me the run around and putting me off. Meanwhile, my electric bill more than doubled, of which I cant afford to pay.
Finally, now that this winter is about over, on 2/17 they had another contractor to come out and replace the parts that they thought was causing the problem. Everything worked fine until 3/3, when I started having the same problems that I had originally had. I, of course, called David the next day, no answer, as usual. Finally got him on 3/5, and he said he would have the new contractor get in touch with me right away to come back out. Another week went by and no word from anyone.
Finally on 3/11, I called David. He returned my call app. 5.30 pm. He proceeded to tell me that I had two options. Either let Brian come out again and check things out and they would pay for that, or they will replace the system, but, I would be responsible for getting and paying someone to install it. I agreed to let Brian come out for now, but, it is not acceptable that if unit needs replacing that I have to pay a penny more to have it installed. I don't have that kind of money. I need someone to completely fix the problem now.
I also has talked to David about getting some compensation on my high electric bill, but, he told me that there was no way they would do that. Again, not acceptable. My electric bill would have never gone that high if I had had a system that worked properly. It's not my fault that their system was faulty. I think they should be held responsible.

My parents had a Rheem 3Ton 10 Seer Pkg. H.P., MN RQKA-A036JK015-541, installed by Kimbro which is now Interstate AC on 12-30-03. This unit is 7 yrs old and we were told it needs to be replaced. They paid $4,397.00. My father has passed away in November 2009. My Mom and myself are very unhappy with this product. People should get more than 7 years out of a new unit.
My Mom noticed it was cold in the house and then she noticed it was running all the time. Interstate told us the compressor had leaked out all the freon, he supposedly patched it and filled it with freon and charged $275.00 on February 5, 2009. A week later my Mom noticed it was not shutting off again and cold. Interstate said she needed a new unit.
We got a second opinion from another company they agreed it has to be replaced. For two months her light bill was three times what it normally is. Which is great since she doesn't have any income coming in yet due to my father's death. She will have to buy new unit out of her savings which is what she is currently living off of.

I purchased and installed a Rheems Water Heater in Jan `09. It had a 12 year warranty. Last month (Jan), the unit leaked and caused $400 in water damage to a shelf in my garage. A plumbing contractor hired by Rheems to handle warranty matters, determined that the leak came from the water heater (it leaks only when it's on and the water is heated), and replaced the defective unit with a new one; he took the old unit away. I've requested payment of $400 from Rheems insurance carrier, Esis, but Karin, the adjuster has refused my claim on the grounds that I have not shown that the leak was caused by the water heater.
She did offer a reduced amount $200 to settle, which I refused. I am now considering filing a small claims suit. Physical damage to shelf and wall where the water heater was - I hired a local contractor to repair the water damage at a cost of $400. I also incurred additional expenses amounting to approx. $200 which I have not pursued as I don't have the receipts.

I had a 12 year 50-gallon water heater installed in 2006. A number of years later, the tank goes flooding my finished basement and creating a mess. I called the number on the water heater, gave them the serial number, and they said no problem, go to Home Depot and exchange it out. Wow, I thought great. So I contacted Rheem with a bill from the plumber to unhook the old water heater and install the new one and to and from travel for the exchange. I sent the bill in figure having the rug shampooed and the cleanup and throwing out water/rust damaged stuff and the told me a 12-year water heater is 1 year parts and labor and an 11-year prorated exchange policy unless you have pictures of the heater where the seam burst on the tank and an engineer do an analysis proving the product failed.
You have to be kidding me. I went to the BBB with it and Rheem basically said, “It’s your problem, not ours.” There are so many other companies out there that will stand behind their product, not like Rheem. If you like on the Better Business Bureau, they have hundreds of complaints and don’t think they need to do anything about it. Do yourself a favor, do not buy Rheem products unless you are looking to have a headache! It’s cost me $500.00 out of pocket to replace the 3-year-old water heater. I lost a box of pictures that can’t be replaced and throw out numerous toys that were damaged, and paid $200.00 to have the rug cleaned! Thanks Rheem.

A new Rheem hot water heater was installed in October 2006. In Jan. 2010, just over 3 years later, it stopped working. When it first broke, we contacted an authorized service provider and also called Rheem to see exactly what was covered under warranty. We were told we needed to diagnose the heater with device from a home improvement store, report results, and they would ship us the correct part. This was such a strange way of handling warranty repairs. We assumed that maybe we had reached the number authorized service providers use to resolve warranty issues. As an end consumer with no expertise in the area of plumbing or gas and given that improper DIY repairs of this nature could be devastating, we should simply work through our Rheem authorized service provider.
The service contractor has ordered parts twice and twice has received the wrong part from Rheem. The service provider has given Rheem the correct part numbers and information, but Rheem continues to send the wrong part. This is the fifth day without hot water. I will never buy another Rheem water heater again as long as I live. And I will tell every single person I know to do likewise.

In any event, a company representative from the manufacturer, Rheem, made no effort to help us troubleshoot and told us we needed a new heater, as well as discouraged a second call to Home Depot. Home Depot's representative demonstrated excellence and thoroughness in customer service and referred us to General Electric (GE). GE's troubleshooters are now making every effort to help us with the problem. In fairness to GE, again, please do not publish until we have a final result. We purchased our home in Arizona in 2004 and had the water tank replaced in 2005 under our home warranty (model # GE50M6A and Serial 1299405515). As it was replaced at no charge, we didn't get a receipt but did get a copy of the Consumer Product Ownership Registration and a copy of the Water Heater Warranty. I called Bob, agent # **, this morning with my request for in-home service as stated under the 6-year limited warranty where customer pays for the parts and customer pays for the labor which I attached to an email. He said I needed to get a multi-meter to test which part was out. He suspected it was either a heating element or the thermostat. Once I used the multi-meter and diagnosed, I was to call him back and they would send out the part I needed for me to install.
He said they only provided warranty service by shipping out the parts and would not cover the parts under warranty if a service tech came to our house and replaced the part. As we are at our vacation home only until after Christmas, doing my own testing and ordering the part makes no sense and we would probably be gone by the time the part arrived and be out of water for several days. I read this warranty language stating that they paid the parts on in-home service to no avail. He kept saying that in-home service parts replacement is only available during year one. Regardless of what my warranty says, it doesn't work that way. I have called a local repair place and will have it repaired today and will be sending them a copy of the receipt so they can honor their written warranty agreement.

I purchased a GE/Rheem 38 gallon Low Nox gas water heater in Nov. 2008 from The Home Depot. The water heater had a 6-year manufacturer's warranty, 1-year full warranty which included parts and labor, and a 5-year limited warranty which includes parts only. Two weeks after the full year warranty ran out in early Dec. 2009, the water heater developed a problem with the gas valve. The pilot would not stay lit. I tried appealing to both Home Depot and Rheem to honor the 1-year warranty as the failure occurred immediately after the full warranty had expired. I was told by both I was covered for parts not labor.
My wife made some phone calls and was able, after great effort, to get Rheem to cover the labor which was great; however, the parts took two days to arrive. I was without hot water for a total of 4 days. My main beef is with the quality of the product and the surly and unhelpful people at Rheem Customer Service. A water heater should last for years without service.
I had a Sears Kenmore water heater in my previous home from which I got 20 years of trouble free service before it failed. I was told by a service technician who works for an independent Rheem dealer and service center that gas valves on Rheem water heaters fail routinely. You'd think Rheem would get a clue and fix that issue. Rheem's customer service people are unfriendly and much less than helpful. They are not empathic to the plight of a customer who has gone days without hot water.
I found out after several calls when asking for the name of the person who had helped me on a previous call that there are 3 call centers that answer the same 1-800 number. The customer service representative would tell me there is no person at this call center with that name. I was told that information as if I should have known it. Rude, surly, condescending and arrogant are suitable descriptions. I will never buy another Rheem product.

When we called Rheem, they told us that our replacement water heater was only under warranty under the first heater and they were not going to do anything for us. Rheem gas water heaters came with the house we built in 2001. One failed in 8/2007, the other is working, no sign that it will fail or is going to fail. The water heater that failed caused over $5K in damages, etc. They denied my claim because they did not get a chance to review the water heater.
I have a report from the plumber that installed the original water heater and they installed the replacement water heater saying that the water heater failed due to manufactory defect because they way it failed, the erosion were from the inside out. As a result, it caused undue pressure to build up and explosive escape from whichever avenue it can escape from. In my case, the pressure escaped via the top of the tank. The plumber said that it could have been just as easily escape from the welding seam. It just happen that it did not on this particular water heater.
Looking at it from afar, you would not know anything was wrong with it except for a few eroded spots on the top of the tank. Rheem try to blank the damage to my property on a catch-pan, which didn't come into play when the water is spewing from the top of the tank causing damage to the surrounding area of my attic, which leaked into one of my Jack-N-Jill bedroom and closet. Damage to everything in that closet and 1/3 of the room, then leaked down to my dining room causing damage to my chandelier, shades, rug, table cloth and various chairs. Rheem made a service call to a local plumbing co. The plumber came on July 11 and determined that a gas valve was defective. Rheem said that they would overnight the part to our home for a Saturday delivery.
After waiting all day for Fedex, I called Rheem back, they had no tracking info for the part but assured me it was ordered and I would receive it on July 12. Needless to say today is July 14 and I still have no hot water. When I spoke to Rheem on July 12 they told me the only info they had was that the part was sent for Saturday delivery. when I called this morning they told me that their computers show that the part was shipped today 7/14.
I have been without water for 5 days. I have had to boil water for baths for myself and my 4 year old daughter. My husband has been taking cold showers. I think this is ridiculous. They have very poor customer service. I was told by Ms F that they are under no obligation to ship this part overnight and that it was done as a convenience to me. What convenience? I'm still waiting, even after they told me I would have it on July 12. I just want others to know about my experience.
I paid over $1000.00 for their product and am not at all happy with not having water for 5 days and the poor customer service. Rheem also told me that they do not have Senior technical support operators on the weekends. So I guess if you have a problem with your water heater you'd better hope it happens on a weekday. I also feel that since they are aware that they will not be able to ship parts on the weekend, that when a consumer calls on a day that falls close to the weekend(in my case a Thursday)that they should send a plumber the same day, to assess the problem, and then the part can be shipped immediately not after the weekend. When calling Rheem also be prepared to wait on hold for a long time. Both times that I called I was placed on hold for over 27 minutes.
