My tankless LP gas water heater froze and burst a copper inlet water pipe. It should have gravity drained last fall, but crappy design somehow didn't allow it. So when I turned it on this spring, water was everywhere. I called Rheem to get a new copper tube. "It's an unavailable part. We don't stock it." Now what village idiot designs an appliance that is prone to freezing, fails, and you have no option but to throw it out and buy another? Like I would EVER buy another product from a loser company that designs and operates this way??? The managers and engineers should be ashamed. What fools. But fool me once, shame on me? Not in this case. Shame on them for being idiots and having no concern about their customers, who are the reason they are in business...

Yesterday, June 7, 2017, I purchased a Rheem top of the line, 50 gallon water heater from Home Depot on Capital Expressway in San Jose California. It worked for only an hour and then shut off and could not be restarted. My licensed contractor called the telephone number on the Rheem water heater 866-279-4566 as directed on the label attached to the water heater. He was treated unbelievably rudely and was instructed to take the entire burner mechanism out of the water heater which involved disconnecting all the internal gas lines and wires!!! We explained that it was illegal for us to do that since we had neither the tools or instructions to ensure that there was no gas leak upon reassembly. In response the Rheem technician stated, "Just do it and call me back." He then hung up on us.
I called back and spoke to another technician who was even more rude to me when I asked her for permission to return the defective heater to Home Depot. Her reply was, "No, that's your problem." When I reminded her that my unit was under warranty and that I had it installed only two hours earlier, she told me that a technician would call me within two business day to schedule an appointment. I then asked to speak to her supervisor to which she replied sarcastically, "Sure" and then she hung up on me.
I then called Home Depot in East Capital Expressway in San Jose California and spoke to the assistant manager there, Paul, who was just wonderful and told me to bring the defective unit back to the store for a replacement unit. Home Depot gets an A+++ from me for their responsible and outstanding service. As for Rheem, I believe criminal charges for fraud should be filed against that horrible company and am in the process of writing a letter to the Attorney General of the State of California. Rheem obviously has no interest in supporting the warranty they offer. I WILL NEVER AGAIN PURCHASE ANY RHEEM PRODUCT!

I purchased the biggest, best tankless hot water tank Rheem makes. After two years it starting leaking like a sieve, so I took it back to Home Depot where I bought it and they replaced it. Two years later same issue, same problem, but this time it quit totally. Efficiency is nice but the aggravation every two years is not worth it. Stay away from this junk!

Basically, I bought two Ruud/Rheem air conditioners from a local company and the 2011 air conditioner started to leak Freon as far as I can tell in 2016. Upon investigation and numerous calls I became aware that the company is selling units with copper coils (aluminum is the best choice) that are eaten through by the Freon and thus cause leaks in the coils which and in turn the unit shuts down.
The company denies that they are having significant problems and will not help me financially address the repair. So, at this time I am repairing my air conditioner from my own "Pocket" even though I bought the units in good faith along with the assurance that Ruud/Rheem was a trustworthy company, WHICH THEY HAVE PROVEN ARE NOT TO BE.
When I called the company, the customer service representative was in complete denial of the problem and I think they were trained to say certain pat answers to avoid liability. "I Highly suggest that everyone reading this write or call the FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION as I did and a rep will call to take your complaint and if enough people do so there will be a federal investigation based on the MAGNUSON ' MOSS WARRANTY ACT, look it up to educate oneself."

We hired Gilson through Home Depot in May 2011 to get this brand new Rheem cental AC system. It came with 5 years warranty but it started leaking the Freon gas within the first 4 years. Gilson was bought by AJ Perri so AJ Perri recharged the gas which cost me about $150. Then the Air Handler stopped working! They think that the motor went bad this time and it will cost roughly $1700 to $1800. I basically received a LEMON from Gilson and unfortunately AJ Perri is extremely expensive!!!! I tried contacting Rheem directly but they didn't respond to my complain either.

Purchased and had professional installation on a Rheem 40 gallon water heater with a 9 year warranty on 1/30/2015. This morning 5/3/2017 just a few months over 2 years the unit failed and needs to be replaced. Now I am out $500.00 labor and must pay the difference between today's price and the price I originally paid for the water heater... Spoke with customer service and of course they won't pay since I am over the two year parts and labor portion of the 9 year warranty. What a ripoff! They know they are making junk and are smart enough to limit the warranty so they are not responsible for labor when their inferior products fail prematurely. Don't get Rheemed like I did and stay clear of these poor quality products.

I purchased an entirely-new Rheem heating and cooling system in very early 2013 (paid in full 3/2/13), having the RASL048JEC compressor-condenser unit, and RGPE-07NBRQR air handler/gas furnace unit. The Rheem compressor is a microprocessor-controlled, dual compressor design. From summer of 2014 onward, this compressor will "latch up" and not self-recover from any disturbance of the AC power coming to my home: brief power outages or brownouts will cause it to stay off. Originally, just pulling the fuse cartridges for 2-3 minutes and re-inserting... would make the unit recover.
After 2015, this easy fix no longer works: now the compressor unit needs to have the cover removed such that the "technician" can do a "hard-reset" of the microcontroller boards by pressing circuit board switches to clear the (saved and displayed) error codes. Two weeks ago the A/C would not come on but "error code 21" was showing, and this was traced to a Freon leak in the ADP-manufactured evaporator coil. This is a known problem with Rheem A/C units having the original copper coil; my local A/C contractor, Alaskan Home Services, had to change out three (3) such coils... including mine on the same day. The new ADP coil appears to have the same model number as the old (copper) coil, but it has aluminum tubing rather than copper. Checking online, it appears that evap coil "failure" in Rheem units is a widespread problem; there is even an attempt at a class-action lawsuit on this issue.
Now yet another "new" problem has surfaced with the furnace / air handler unit: gas burner comes on, but the duct fan does not, resulting in an "error code 46" on the controller board for the air handler... and the burner shuts off. And this came after the evaporator coil repair. I am really upset that this high-cost system is so unreliable... especially since it was bought with reliability in mind. Additional issue: Alaskan now charges me a "diagnostic fee" for coming out... although my old paperwork on the extended PMA ("preventative maintenance agreement") was supposed to be all-inclusive contract, with no trip or travel time charges. Review of the PMA paperwork shows "diagnostic fee" ABSENT as a topic.

If you thinking getting a tankless water tank think about it. It can take up to 75 second to get hot water, if you do not have a recirculation loop in your house forget it. The Rheem does not have a buffer tank in the unit. You will have to get install a recirculation pump and a mini water tank beside to keep a certain quantity of hot water to be use until the tank warm up the rest of the water you need.
But if you go for Navien NPE series you will need just the recirculation loop. That brand have the buffer tank inside the unit. And you have a app to change the temperature of the water from anywhere is your house. If I knew that I would go for that one and the price is less than Rheem and better guarantee. Do not trust any sale rep who come to your home. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GO FOR ANY TANKLESS WATER TANK. AND KNOW YOUR HOUSE PLUMBING.

We have now been six days without hot water as the rep forgot to overnight the part and it now the weekend and they cannot send it until Monday for Tuesday delivery. We called Home Depot for help at this point and their policy is after 90 days we own it and they cannot help us with it unless we want to pay them an additional $100.00 then they would try to help. Just want to pass along my experience with a substantial investment which I should have researched better. On Jul. 18 2011 I purchased a Rheem combo of aircon, furnace, and water heater. The price was reasonable and I received tax credits. On Jan. 13 this year after 5 and a half years the blower motor went out on a night where it was 7 degrees. That cost me $574.00 account 10-year warr. void if you don't have annual maintenance. This is an easy way to not stand behind your product.
Sunday night furnace went out again. The crew couldn't repair the problem because it now needs a whole new circuitry board which is the brains of the unit. I'm the one who needs some new brains for buying this lemon. Rheem Corp. Office or website has no phone # to vent. I guess they got tired of all the whining. So I'll grin and bear it. You have to admit it is a brilliant strategy to sell and service poor quality units, the business never quits. At least I haven't had any trouble yet with the water heater or aircon like so many of you guys had. Knock on wood and wait it will come, lol. DON'T BUY RHEEM, YOU'LL GET RHEEMED!

I replaced my old hot water tank with a Rheem energy efficient model Guardian System RHGPRO50-40F. Same size as my former tank. When I fill my bath tub the hot water turns lukewarm after a few minutes. The licensed installer told me that this is the way that all new energy efficient hot water tanks work and that the next person to run hot water for a bath or shower would not experience this. Seriously? His suggestion was to run some hot water about 20 minutes before I filled the bath tub and when filling the bath to only turn the hot water faucet on the bath 1/2 way.
I tried that and the temperature of the water continued to decrease. So I have to stand by the tub as it fills constantly checking the water temperature and turning down the cold water to maintain the water temperature. I have turned up the temperature on the hot water heater to almost max. That had not solved the issue. I have tried to get this addressed or get an answer from someone and even asked if perhaps I needed a larger tank with no luck. If it is indeed working as designed how can they call this an energy efficient hot water heater when I have to waste water and keep the water at a much higher temperature than I did with the one that was not energy efficient and it was able to fill my bath tub.

They should give a warranty to the water heater, not the owner. DO NOT BUY RHEEM. They are better alternatives.

April 2014 I purchased a Richmond (made by Rheem) LP tankless water heater to replace a 15 year old Paloma that had finally sprung a leak. Purchase cost was $800 at the Rapid City Menards, I did not purchase an extended warranty. January 2017 I noticed a leak of water under the Rheem/Richmond heater. Upon removing the cover I discovered the heat exchange plenum had failed and was leaking water into the exhaust fan housing and ultimately into the electrical connections in the bottom of the heater.
I called Richmond which ultimately ended up at RHEEM. They wanted pictures of the unit and the location of the install. I submitted pictures and instantly RHEEM claimed improper installation. I have read a lot of other reviews of dissatisfied customers who have experienced Rheem's claim of improper installation. Installation claim is that we must use their version of the "Concentric" piping to properly vent and intake outside air. My specific case vents the exhaust perfectly well, however living in a frozen portion of the US, I fail to see where drawing sub zero air down 20 ft of pipe with a warm air pipe traveling inside this cold air, thus producing condensation, and ultimately frozen ice in the upper regions of this pipe, will produce less stress on the machine than drawing ambient (60 degree F) air from 12 inches away.
Regardless they claim "improper installation" and refuse to repair, or warranty the water heater. This is a workmanship/engineering flaw of the gaskets at connection points in the heating plenum. Not a fresh air issue. I try to buy American, but they plainly admitted to me that the engineers were not available for consultation due to their residence in Japan. I live in a remote location and cannot be burdened with a sole supplier. Lowe's has to order a unit in, taking a week. Home Depot has a tiny unit on the shelf that won't even come close to the 150000 btu rating that this Rheem was. And Menards is the only one with more than one on the shelf...sadly they are both Rheem. So I'm forced to take it in the rear with another $800 Rheem.

We purchased a new A/C unit on March 12, 2014 for a secondary home in Fla. This unit is not a rental. It is used by us a few months a year. We purchased the property a few years before and it still had the original a/c, so we decided to be safe and buy a new one. MISTAKE! We used a local A/C company in that area and purchased a RHEEM along with the semi annual maintenance contract. We recently made a trip to Fla and found that the a/c wasn't working and that it also froze up causing wet floors.
We called our A/C company. The cost was 500.00 to come out on Monday 1/2 (a holiday). We were only there a few days and needed to get it fixed to prevent mold/mildew. They needed to put a dye in the system to see if there was a leak. Well there were multiple leaks. So for an addtl 586.00 for labor they would fix it. Their warranty is a joke! Rheem knows that their products are defective and they only last a short period. They should have to pay for the labor to fix their defective product. I wish we could bond together and go after them for a selling faulty products and hold them accountable for costs associated with their defects. This is the United States of America, we deserve more.

Rheem is horrible, if an HVAC contractor tries to sell you one get rid of him as well. I installed 3 units at my house in 2012 and after a year I had to replace an evaporator coil on one unit. After 2 years all three evaporator coils were leaking and need to be replaced as well as numerous other problems. Rheem covers parts but not labor, every visit has been at least $500. The comfort control 2 (Rheem Thermostat RHC-TST551CMMS) is not programmable to a laymen, they don't give you a manual. Try to find any information for Rheem online other than to fix one or buy one. There is none, they sweep the internet so you call the repair facility nearest you so they can come out and charge you to repair it.
An out of town family member who owns an HVAC company relayed to me that they are the least dependent and he loves them. Rheem has washed their hands to even talking to the consumer as well. Try calling Rheem, good luck. They tell you they have never had issue, they're not even sure they make AC units if you have a problem. Try looking for manuals on their website, there are none. Not even to program the thermostat. They throw codes constantly and guess what, call the technician to reprogram it's $100.00 plus to visit and $$$ to fix it, that's if they are telling you the truth. The company has had issues with all of their products from water heaters to AC units and they deny ever having an issue. They are unscrupulous and their product is pure junk. I purchased a new unit July 2010. Last year it was low on freon and the unit was charged, no problems could be found. Had the same problem, twice this year. The second time around they found that the oil was leaking, a common problem with unit. The standard warranty is 5 years, but if you register the unit, which I am sure I did, but Rheem doesn't seem to have any record of it. So here I am at 6 yrs and 2 months with a failed unit, on a problem is very aware of and they are very unwilling to do something about it. They said if I would have registered the unit, which I did, they would cover it for 10 years, not 5 years. Basically they are counting on the consumer not registering thinking most problems won't show up in five years so they don't have to stand behind their products, especially on a known problem. A strategy that helps the bottom line, but certainly screws the consumer.
My recommendation, is never buy a product from these people. I bought this one because I had previously purchased their products, and had no problems, but it appears the company's commitment to customers no longer exists, even when this is a problem admit happens. Look elsewhere for your next heat and air unit. Very dissatisfied and disappointed. Thank you.

At 5 years, the Rheem A/C evaporator coil failed, IE is leaking coolant fluid, aka freon. Fortunately it was still under warranty and I received a replacement coil (copper, which is important; stay tuned), although it cost me $400 for labor as well as about $300 for freon recharges before the replacement. Now, two years later the replacement is leaking. My A/C service company told me that Rheem has a class action suit against them for knowing that the copper design was not compatible with the newer R-410A higher pressure fluid and that they've known for years that they leak, sometimes after less than a year.
We checked with Ferguson (wholesaler) and they said the replacement was not covered past 1 year. So now I'm faced with having to pay an additional $1500 or so for a replacement coil (which will be made of aluminum and "not" be made by Rheem). He installs that and puts some fluid that was recommended into a valve and off he went.
The AC worked for about 3 hours before it went bad -- froze up. He came over in the evening and looked at it, and said now it was the valve that he had gotten a service alert on. Although he put in some fluid as they described apparently it needs to be replaced again. That is under warranty BUT over $500 in labor and can't do it then. Will have to come back and do it. Installed August 2013 and we had cooling problems April 2016, HVAC repairer said low on freon, warned us that it might be leaking. June 2016, cooling problems again, same HVAC repairer came and said it was blocked drain and suggested we avail of their maintenance plan and we did.
August 22, 2016 cooling problems again. HVAC repairer came at night and concluded that coil has a leak and was 90% sure it was the coil inside because the outside unit coils didn't have any signs of leakage. For this visit we paid $177 labor and freon refill. So far we have spent $700 for the three visits. To replace the coil it will cost $500 plus and that is already with our membership discount. This RHEEM brand is a piece of junk and reading through all other reviews, I'm so mad that I didn't do my research and trusted the Home Depot specialist. The only consolation I have is that I took a maintenance plan so at least I get a 15% discount every time they have to do repairs.

Please don't purchase a rheem heating/ac unit. I purchased a Rheem unit in November 2014 and my ac unit has already gone out twice this summer. I have been dealing with this problem since April through August 2016. I have had an ac tech person come to my residence on several occasion trying to find out why my ac unit doesn't hold the freon that was put in come to find out it was leaking freon in the coil; the ac tech guy ordered a new coil which I had to pay for the shipping cost and after installation on the new coil it still leaked freon only at a faster level. The freon would go out after 24 hours of being put in the system.
I spent a $3500 on this unit only to be a piece of junk, save yourself the time and trouble on the product and don't buy at all. I have already emailed the company they called but no return call at this time. I don't understand why Consumer Affairs doesn't have this product or company pay for the problems it is causing if you read the reviews many people are going through the same problem. This company should not be selling products at all they are already in trouble for selling faulty water heaters.

Their CEO and CFO should really try using their customer service department. My first call the employee said it must be dust or dirt. l ask why this never happened to my old less expensive water unit - no answer. Months later same pilot problem - doesn't stay lit. Second call girl tells me it can't be the unit. l must have a gas leak or something about cubic feet of air in my garage. She told me l would need to call my local Pacific Gas and Electric Company which l did. Everything was good .
NO GAS LEAKS and heater was in a space off the ground, with plenty of cubic ft. Third call l get a male employee. By now my unit is going out 2-3 times a week. He was the rudest one yet. They are sending me a new pilot ignition part, still not received. However even under warranty, it's up to me to find a contracted Rheem plumber. They couldn't even recommend someone to call. l ended up calling Home Depot which gave me a local number. We bought an Rheem 5.0 Ton air conditioner unit just 13 months ago. The compressor stopped working and even though the parts are covered we had to pay $600 for the labor. We are still paying for this unit and it only lasted a little over a year. The unit we had before (a different brand) lasted over 10 years before it gave us any problems. It doesn't seem fair that we had to pay that much money for labor when it is obviously a faulty unit. We live in Florida and it's the middle of summer, we can't live without AC so we just had to pay it. I will not recommend this Rheem brand to anybody.

Additionally we have had numerous repair calls for spot welds and recharging of the Freon. It has been a nightmare owning this system. I would discourage anyone from purchasing an HVAC system from RHEEM manufacturing. The warranty implies or leads to an expectation of a reliable product. However this is not a reliable product. I have RUUD tankless water heater (Model # RUTGH-950VN). On June 25th, 2016, it started leaking continuously. Since customer service was closed for that day (8:30 PM), I called the customer service on the following day! As soon as I told them that the water heater is leaking, they told me to send them the photos of the water heater before any further assistance. Once they received the photos they told me that I have to take the water heater to the dealer, from where I bought it. Since it was under warranty, I'll get a new one from the dealer. On June 27th, my plumber took it to the dealer. Since that model was not in stock, the dealer told me that it will arrive on July 1st, 2016.
But on July 1st I came to know that the tankless water heater will only be shipped on 10th July (!!), and the dealer will receive it on July14th, 2016. So I contacted the Rheem customer service to complain. They (a male) told me that they can't do anything about shipping. It is out of their control. I had not hot water for all these days. I waited one more week and again contacted the Rheem customer service on July 6th, 2016. This time a new representative (female) told me that it is unacceptable that I am waiting for the water heater for so long. She told me that the required model is in stock. Since we were expecting the heater by July 14th, there is no point in shipping one more heater directly to the customer. Resigned, I decided to wait for one more week (thankfully it is summer).
But July 14th came and went. Still no water heater at the dealer!! So I decided to contact THE CUSTOMER SERVICE again. This time lady told me that they never take care of the shipping and they can't if the heater has shipped from warehouse. I would never buy Rheem water heater again. Meanwhile I am still waiting for the new water heater from Rheem. I still don't have hot water at home and I have three small kids.

I had a new Rheem Classic Heating and Air Conditioner installed on 6-14-2012, or at least my Homeowners insurance did. After receiving 2 bids for replacement, my insurance company awarded the bid to a dealer who installed Rheem Units. The unit was a combo heating and air conditioner unit that sits outside, at the back of the house. It is a RRNL unit. It is a 2- 1/2 ton unit, which was the size of the one replaced. The old one kept our house cool in the summer and warm in the winter, unit it suffered hail damage that rendered it useless.
Long story short, the new unit has never worked right as it does not even come close to cooling our house. Of course our old unit had real Freon in it where the new unit uses the 410A stuff. Unit has already had to have compressor replaced, has already had to have Freon added once and needs again and a new fan motor. It is not even 4 years old yet. The fan on the unit runs continually and never shuts off in the summer. We keep the thermostat set at 72 and according to the digital readout, the unit never cools the house down to this point, thus running day and night.
I had to pay $200.00 labor to have the compressor replaced under warranty, which I don't think I should have had to do. When the fan went out a couple of weeks ago, I asked the installer/repairman if there was any recalls on this unit and do they ever get a LEMON in these. He told me no on both questions. I had to pay to have Freon installed, but the fan was replaced under warranty and he did not charge me to switch out. I am really dissatisfied with this unit and which I had my old one back, or at least this one replaced.

They call me to say that the water heater is under recall and to call them. They don't tell me that the part they promised isn't really being shipped. I call them. Transferred to another department.
Now I'm told that I will receive an e-mail in a couple of days telling me how to get a part a couple of days after that. That means no hot water for six days. Request to speak to a supervisor. After 30 minutes on hold, I get "tier 2" support - just another call center. Their reasoning behind this is the tank that was purchased in 2015 is NO LONGER manufactured so we had to get the one compatible to it.
FIRST off, is it my fault the Hot Water Tank which was less than a year old went! SECONDLY, again is it my fault the original tank is NO LONGER manufactured! We proceeded to contact Rheem today regarding this issue, at which time they advised they have NO control how Home Depot processes Rheem's defective merchandise/warranties or their prices. I have since found out that these Honeywell gas valves are notorious for breaking down and they are used by many different hot water tank manufacturers. The leakage issue is a serious problem in a confined space natural gas can easily blow up and cause a fire. To make matters worse if you live in the country and use propane which is heavier than air the combustible gas will build up around the combustion chamber making an explosion very likely.
These malfunctioning Honeywell valves are all over the internet and YouTube and have been a well known problem by the manufacturers for several years yet nothing seems to be done about them! I would advise people to avoid any tank with these potentially dangerous malfunctioning valves period. I would also advise people to avoid Rheem products in general based on my customer service experience. They should have been happy to replace the valve considering the dangerousness of the situation instead of asking so many questions and trying to get out of it. They don't have the customer's best interests in mind based on my experience.
A lot of the issues with this company's hot water tanks are with the Honeywell gas valve and malfunctions of said valve. Neither company seems to be interested in fixing this problem. I would stay away from these hot water tanks and these valves in particular if I were you! You just shouldn't have to deal with these kind of problems.

Purchased a 50 gallon water heater in 2011 with a nine-year Rheem guarantee. Awakened yesterday to a leak in the unit. Since I was 5 years into the warranty period, I did not expect much but called the customer service anyway. A polite "technical" representative explained that the element gasket had failed after I described the leak. Called my plumber who came immediately and determined that the unit failed. He replaced both elements. Still leaked. Called customer service again and they suggested something I did not understand related to the power supply. The plumber took the phone. Within minutes he whispered to me the "technicians" at Rheem were not knowledgeable. He asked one of the three he spoke to how many heaters she had installed. She told him she had observed an installation "once." He spent 1.5 hours trying to get them to honor the warranty in any way.
I went to Lowe's and purchased a new heater which my plumber installed without charge. The final Rheem representative told me I had invalidated the warranty with the new installation. She stated we could have gone through "additional technical assessment" via phone had I not replaced the unit. I asked for one example and she stated "Testing the junction box." I responded that she was talking nonsense and asked what other technical assessments we could have done. She repeated that it did not matter because I had replaced the unit and invalidated the warranty. Please read the other stories presented here. The pattern is the same. Rheem had no intention of honoring their warranty. Their representatives offer questionable advice (use a voltmeter, check electric supply in a leaking unit, etc.) and clearly could not respond to my plumber who challenged them.

On August 1 2012 I purchased a Rheem HVAC system for my home. It cost $5000. I had it installed by a Rheem certified AC company who SOLD the system to me. I had it serviced per the manufacturer's advice. There is a 10-year parts, 1 year labor warranty. EXACTLY 2 years to the day, the blower motor died! Yes, the part was guaranteed BUT I had to pay almost $400 in labor! The tech told me they were having issues with this motor... produced in Mexico. OUTRAGEOUS.
An almost 1 year long attempt to get some kind of response from Rheem ensued. I finally wrote the CEO at his Palace near Atlanta. Some corporate "puppet" with a horrible attitude did ring me. He was reading a script and rudely informed me there was nothing Rheem would do for me. I thanked him for wasting his and my time.
Fast forward... 1.5 years later, I HAVE NO AC AND NO HEAT... during a cold spell in Boca Raton, Fl. I called the service company. The tech arrives and immediately tells me, "It's working!" No surprise there. Well, 2 hours later he proceeds to tell me, "Well, in Florida, sometimes the pressure does something to the system, which makes it not function." WHAT!!! So, he fixes the AC part but tells me now I don't have any HEAT! It was 62 in the house. "You can buy a heater for $340."
Wait I minute!!! I paid for a system that DID give me heat, and now you're telling me I don't have heat, can't have it with this system and the Florida weather is to blame? GIVE ME A BREAK!! So in essence the product was KNOWINGLY sold in a climate that causes it to malfunction. This is pure crap! I am reporting this to my congressperson, who has in the past achieved GREAT results for me! I, like millions of us are SICK AND TIRED OF GETTING RIPPED OFF BY WALL STREET!!! They make this ** in other countries where they pay nothing to these people and charge their FELLOW AMERICANS a price that reflects AMERICAN WAGES, so their evil CEO's etc. can make millions!
NO COMPANY SHOULD BE PERMITTED TO SELL PRODUCTS THAT ARE CLEARLY NOT SUITED FOR THE CLIMATE where they are selling it! Don't buy any Rheem Product whatsoever!!! They are pigs!!! I wish a bunch of us could get together and file a class action suit against them. My last ditch effort is to tell the service company, Quality First AC in Pompano Beach, FL that I want a whole new system because they are telling me it is only working 50% since I no longer have heat and I paid for heat. The parts ARE guaranteed right!!! America... "It's I'll screw you before you screw me" these days. Too bad.

I bought the Richmond Encore Whole House tankless hot water heater made by RHEEM from Menards 11-6-12. Late winter of 2014 I have no hot water. I take a look at the unit to see if there is anything obvious I can see wrong and decide I should call the 1-800 number on the manual. After giving four different "tech-assist" the same information, I finally got one to tell me to take pictures of the unit, it's vent pipe and several more pictures. I emailed the pictures and took more pictures as requested. I spent most of the day loading/emailing pictures to the techs.
The techs call several hours later to notify me that with the warranty, I could take the water heater back to the store I purchased the heater from and swap it out for a replacement. So I did. It was not fun or as easy as the company RHEEM would like to make it sound. Menards was its own kind of problem to deal with as well. Even with the RHEEM case #, Menards wanted to give me a hard time.
I got the replacement heater installed and working. January 19, 2016 no hot water. I repeat the same process as stated above. More pictures, emails and hours on the phone. 'Tech' says, "just swap it out." I asked what kind of warranty would the replacement have since this would be the third water heater I would have to install.
RHEEM said the warranty is only good from the original date of purchase. So with the warranty: 12 years heat exchanger, 5 years parts and 1 year labor, I would be paying for the fourth water heater if I were to buy into their warranty again. I didn't. I will not recommend this Richmond Encore Whole House Water Heater made by RHEEM to anyone. Menards gave me 'in store credit' of the last sale price for the water heater because I didn't have my receipt. Richmond Encore 199,900 BTU Whole House High Efficiency NG. I called Rheem, troubleshooted the water heater with them over the phone and they decided it was the gas valve. I replaced it for them and the problem continued. I called them again, troubleshooted the heater again and they said it was the ignitor and asked me to replace it. I refused to replaced because I did not want to damage the heater and invalidate the warranty. Their repair company replaced the ignitor, the unit started after many sparks and then would not work again.
I called Rheem again, troubleshooted again the flammable gas sensor, reset the gas valve without fixing the problem. They said it was the thermal protection device and asked me to open and remove the burner which I refused to do. I got tired of this and asked to return the unit. Rheem says they do not "recommend" that because they want to keep troubleshooting the unit (while I take cold showers...) and do not issue a Return Authorization number.
Home Depot manager says I need to contact Rheem, get a return authorization number and they do not honor the 90 day return policy nor provide me a copy of it (they said I can take a picture of the policy on the counter). The policy does not mention water heater as non returnable items but still the manager does not accept me to return the heater. The manager said also that since the water heater was installed I cannot return it. That said after a misdiagnosis they sent me a part that worked for one day then quit but being the person I am, I dug farther and found that what they said was broken and the part that was broken were two different things. It worked for right at 2 years and then developed a condition that is usually due to lack of Freon and the coils would freeze up and unit would not pump cold air. It seems that these units made in Mexico and sold by Rheem had known defect in the type of coil uses. This type copper coil developed leaks due to condensation on the coils. Currently a class action suit is filed that I was not aware of at the time of my purchase. The local contractor claims they did not know about the problem when my unit was installed. However, without much research you can find that his supplier knew of the defect and Rheem knew of the defect during the time my unit was under warranty and I was never notified of the defect nor replacement of the defective coils. Rheem will cover the part but not the labor to install, which is quoted in the $500-$600 range.
However, I feel that a company that sells a product starting in excess of $3000 should have the same requirements on notification of defects as other manufacturers have. That is to notify everyone that purchased and has a warranty when the defect is found, and make whatever arrangements not to jeopardize the good will of the Contractor and end user. Purchased GE ULTRA LOW NO x 6 Year Gas Water Heater, by Rheem Manufacturing from Home Depot in Modesto, Ca. First problem was at 1 & 1/2 years after purchase. Upon inspection of PG&E I was told Thermocouple had to be replaced and most likely it was a faulty part and or product (Not knowing about the hundreds of complaints similar of mine). The part was replaced at my expense. One year later the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th problems occurred (3 times in 5 months). Upon inspecting a LOUD EXPLOSIVE SOUND in my hall area, we discover the pilot light is no longer lit on the GAS WATER HEATER. Initially there are problems in re-lighting it but fortunately it has re-lit.
It then came to mind to begin searching for this products recall. Not as easy of a task and I continue my search for a recall, but in the process I have found this water heater is no longer sold by Home Depot; every review was bad with most stating the thermocouple having to be replaced within the first two years, and this product has been discontinued. The GE Appliance website states this model is no longer being manufactured. And it is no wonder.
What I am curious about is what it takes for a product to be recalled because from what I have researched it is the opinion of hundreds that this water heater is junk, a hassle to deal with the continuous problems, very costly. I pray not, although I fear the explosive sound could be a danger or deadly. If I could I would most definitely purchase another water heater but I am currently disabled, living on a limited income that I cannot even make it on each month. Therefore I pray for our safety and that the water heater does not have any further problems. As I have written this complaint, I have to GE as well. In Dec 2012 we moved into our new home, over the Christmas/New Year period the hot water system broke down, I rang Rheem and reported the problem, January 2013 it was repaired under warranty, the fault being a leaking gromit allowing water to enter the circuit board. 2nd repair was in April 2014, the system required a reset, which Rheem was contacted and sent a electrician to perform the reset which wasn't covered by warranty and costed $99. 3rd repair, same problem, required a reset, but before the electrician left the system faulted again. The system was then put in bypass mode till a diagnosis could be made, a period of about 1 month. Note: while in bypass mode the system uses more power due to only heating a small amount of water in a secondary system much like a kettle.
This job was then handed over to a refrigeration mechanic who two weeks later had to remove the heating unit from the system and take to town for repair, another three weeks passed when I called to check on the system and was told they were waiting for parts. Another two more weeks passed and I called to check on the job, parts had arrived and were being fitted. And a couple more days the unit was back on the hot water system (this period was approx 2 1/2 months of the system in bypass mode, costing more to run, and not being efficient as the manufacturer claimed, the next power bill was huge). 4th breakdown, the system worked for a little while before it stopped again, and was out of service. It was back in bypass mode for another two-three weeks while parts were ordered, the unit was removed again from the hot water system and sent to town for repair. Two week later it was returned and refitted.
In December 2014 I contacted Rheem and spoke to Peter **, their customer service manager, and voiced my concerns that the system was almost out of warranty and now it is noisier due to being pulled apart so many times, and the run time was excessive and I felt it wasn't cutting out when it should, it wasn't cost efficient as they claimed it would be, and if it was to fail one more time I would have to replace it with another unit of a different brand, as I couldn't afford to keep repairing it and paying the high power bills it caused, and that I had lost all faith in their product. Peter assured me the system working within spec and would continue to function. 5th breakdown, 2/6/15 the system failed again, I called Rheem at 0800 that morning and reported it.
Around lunch time I had not received any return phone call, and as I was leaving the following day to travel interstate, I decided to call a plumber and get the system replaced with a standard type hot water system so my family wouldn't be without hot water in my absence. 16/6/15 I got a return phone call from Rheem saying they would replace the system with a new model heat pump system, but I informed them that the system had already been replaced, and it was now out of warranty.
After more emails to Peter **, and providing him with invoices for both the new system and the original failing system, copies of power bills and a photo of the installed new system, he has decided to refund me the cost of the new system $1375, plus $300 towards excess power. And not refund me the cost of the failed system $3080, as I had an opportunity to accept his offer of a new system back on the 16/6/15, two weeks after the system had failed and been removed and replaced. My argument is that he had the opportunity to replace the system in December 2014 when I voiced my concerns to him via phone call and not two weeks after the failed system was removed.

My Rheem tankless water heater was installed in my home in 2011. I started having problems with it less than a year later when it was error coding every time I tried to access hot water. I had a plumber come out and assess the problem and he was told by Rheem (based on the error code) that the sensor needed to be cleaned. That was done, but the error codes continued within a month. The next time, I was told that I needed to have my water heater flushed because the problem was sediment buildup. I had that done, and the error codes started again within a month. I continued to have plumbers come out and have my ongoing problems assessed but nothing was fixing the problem, and Rheem was less than helpful.
About four months ago, the water heater was only producing hot water on demand about 50% of the time. I would have to shut the water off and try again, or turn the control panel off and on again to try to get hot water access. My washing machine was not getting warm or hot water consistently, neither was my dishwasher or my bathroom and kitchen sinks. At that time, the next step that Rheem advised me (my plumber) to take was to have the control panel replaced. They advised that they would send a new panel to me. It took four weeks to get to me, and was installed by my plumber. The next day, the error codes were still happening. The plumber was then told that it was actually the motherboard that needed replacing and that Rheem would send that part.
Another four weeks later, the motherboard was delivered and installed, but the error codes were still happening by the next day. I was told that sediment buildup was a major problem and that I should install a water softener, which I did. Then, my water heater completely stopped providing hot water. It was clear to me that Rheem was just throwing new parts at the problem without helping me to accurately remedy the issues I was having. At this point, we are replacing the tankless and it will not be with a Rheem unit. I am incredibly disappointed with the customer care that this company has provided and am amazed that this process has wasted so much of my time and resources.

16 year old water heat started leaking. I replaced it with a Rheem 50 gallon Power Vent Propane Water Heater. After 3 weeks it would only heat water to luke warm (tepid) then shut down. I read the bad reviews on this website and thought I made a big mistake. I bought it a Home Depot and had to drive 70 miles to pick it up. The Energy Dept created new standards effective April 2015 and there were only 2 in Southwest Ohio. Can't go without hot water very long (spoiled Americans). With all the bad reviews, why would HD carry this product?
I called Rheem customer service and MY experience was the OPPOSITE of everything posted on this site. All were most helpful to troubleshoot. Sent a new pressure switch. I changed it and that didn't fix it. I am a very good DIY person. There aren't that many parts to a water heater but a Power Vent heater is a little more complicated. I think I ended up (ultimately) speaking to 5 customer service people. The last was a guy that only advised on Power Vent models. He asked about the baffle in the middle under the Power Vent. I was sticking out about 1 inch but looked normal to me as I didn't know what was normal/abnormal.
Apparently during the drive from Columbus to Cincinnati it worked itself out (it should be flush with the shoulder). I asked if I could set on its side during transit and the HD person said yes as long as I didn't set it on the side with the controls. Made sense but the baffle vibrated out a bit. The fuel/air ratio was confused. Anyway the last guy told me to push this baffle down. It was firm. I put a piece of wood on it and gave it a quick bang and it went down flush!!! I powered it up and it now produces scalding water. Hot setting is plenty. You do not need VERY HOT. You will get burned. To summarize, I wanted to counter all the bad reviews about Rheem water heaters and let others know they WILL help you and send a part/technician right away if necessary. Working perfectly now.

Rheem electric water heater, Model # PRO+E50 2 RH95 EC1 with Protection Plus Kit. WET DOG ODOR, RUST AND CONDENSATION: The heater smelled like a wet dog the day my plumbing contractor installed it (11 05 2014). I figured it was just new item odor, but it hasn't gone away after 8 months. Condensation droplets formed inside the plastic cap above the primary magnesium anode on the very first day of operation. The condensation remained for seven months after installation. Rust stains remain there still.
FAULTY PROTECTION PLUS KIT: The Protection Plus Kit, with its secondary anode, had a manufacturing defect. It leaked after 6 months because the nipples plastic lining didn't completely cover the pipe interior. The manufacturer left the top three-sixteenths of an inch of pipe with no lining! Thus unprotected, those three sixteenths of an inch rusted, developed osteoporosis, leaked, and my plumber had to replace the kit with a straight brass nipple.
After sending two different, wrong replacement parts (am attaching a photo of one of them placed alongside the old part they were attempting to replace), Rheem finally sent the correct replacement Protection Plus Kit despite having told me three times that for strange reasons this kit couldn't be replaced. But unfortunately this correct replacement kit has the same manufacturer defect the first one had. This new part needs repair prior to installation or it too will leak.
I've twice written to Rheem's technical department, letting them know of the manufacturing defect, telling them of my repair idea, and asking for their advice. I needed to know if JB Weld "water weld" epoxy will stick to the plastic they used in the manufacturing process---to know if it's polypropylene or PVC, because no epoxy will stick to polypropylene). But after sending and resending this letter to Rheem's technical department, I've received no response after six weeks.
Anthony at Pace Plumbing Supply in Stockton, who sold my plumber this water heater with Protection Plus Kit, suggested I keep the brass nipple, cut the magnesium rod from the faulty nipple, simply drop it into the tank, and reattach the brass nipple. Shocked by this suggestion, I asked if the anode might break the glass lining when it hits bottom, whereupon he quickly said he had to go to a meeting and hung up on me. I'm getting worried because my 1-year guarantee is quickly expiring. I cannot get answers from Rheem, and my plumbing contractor says I can and should do nothing---that my only solution is to wait for the heater to fail and then replace it with my own funds---buying another brand of heater to be sure.
Has anyone else out there had trouble with wet dog odor from their brand new top-of-the-line water heater? None of my former water heaters have had this problem here where I've lived for 43 years. What causes it? Finally, I'd be happy to join a class action suit against Rheem in order that I might recover my merchandise cost and installation fee. Needless to say, no settlement will ever compensate for the grief.

My contractor put the warranty in a plastic bag and attached it to the inside of the access door. I asked Rheem to help with the cost of $1,100.00 and the agent Melisa said it was out of warranty. A lesson learned. Never assume that 10 year warranty means that in today's world. A simple mistake by a contractor cost me 1,1000.00. Our water heater was professionally installed in May 2011. Last month the unit started leaking. I pulled out the paperwork and went online to verify the warranty. According to their warranty verification site, the warranty was valid through 6/11/2024. I called the Rheem customer service line (800-432-8373) and spoke to someone that confirmed that the warranty was valid. He said I needed to have a plumber look at the unit first and he gave me the name of a plumber that I could use. I paid $140 for him to come out and he confirmed that the unit was properly installed and the heat exchanger was leaking. I called Rheem back on 6/26/15 and the customer service agent (Scott, who was very nice) asked some basic questions including "Were you the homeowner at the time the unit was installed?" I bought the house one year ago. He then told me that because I was not the owner of the home when it was installed, the warranty was not valid.
I asked to speak to a supervisor and he told me was the one in charge. I asked to speak to his manager and he took my information and told me he would have him call me but no one ever did. I sent an email to Rheem's customer service center and again got no response. As a result, I have had to pay $1,975 to buy a new tankless water heater and have it installed. To make matters worse, I was forced to buy another Rheem as any other brand would have required additional costs to retrofit the piping to fit that product (according to the plumber that Rheem referred). I feel that the product failed after 4 years and this should have nothing to do with the fact that I bought the house 3 years after it was installed. I would like to be reimbursed for the cost of the new unit under the original warranty. I am also disappointed that Rheem did not respond to my request to speak to a manager or my email to their customer service center.

The 2nd time, about 3yrs later, the same scenario. $230.00 for service call and $493 for installation. In both cases the coil was covered by Rheem. The number of calls made by me to Rheem and my contractor too numerous to mention. I did everything right. I must throw some blame towards my contractor in handling the 2nd fiasco.
In any case, the problem is this. None of this would have happened if Rheem's equipment had not broken down in the first place in less than 5rs. (My limited guarantee is for 10yrs.) What good is a guarantee if you run into the kind of situation described? Now I am out about $1500.00 and what can happen next? Since then they have had to replace the outside unit once, replace the inside unit components a couple times, replace the copper tubing from the outside to inside once, and at least 8-9 service calls last year and today will be number 2 this year to get my AC working. The Rheem factory region rep has been to my house at least 3 times trying to figure out what the problems are. The company that installed my system has been in business many years and said this is the first unit that has given them this many headaches. This unit is broke even today as I sit here waiting for the repairman. Even though they have not charged me to keep coming back to fix it, I know this cannot continue to happen. Frustrated in Kempner Texas.

On 4/2/15 at 8 a.m. purchased a Rheem natural gas water heater 40 gal (9 yr tank/parts warranty) from Home Depot (to replace a 6 yr old Whirlpool which warranty was out on and repairs got too much). Although I was guaranteed same day installation with HD's contractor, my order got "lost" somehow so earliest installation was Sat. 4/4 (before Easter Holiday). I picked up the heater at HD, renting their delivery truck and had help loading and unloading (at store and at home) on 4/2. On Sat 4/4 early afternoon the contracted with HD plumbers installed Rheem and got rid of Whirlpool. The bill for deinstallation and reinstallatioon was $893 (includes $250 permit for my county in FL). HD had given me a $1305 quote including cost of deinstallation/reinstallation and Rheem water heater. After install when plumber turned on gas and lit pilot a large flame flew out at his face. He was okay.
The gas chamber was not properly sealed (manufacturing defect). I called Rheem (1 pm 4/4) and the rep needed to speak with plumber. He took pictures and emailed them to Rheem so they could see scorch marks on unit. 10 minutes later I called them back. Rheem told me they couldn't get anyone out there to service it since they didn't have anyone in Gainesville (Jacksonville only - that is my other option if SVC Tech willing to work an hour outside area). They stated they would reimburse me only the "national average" of $250 for deinstallation and reinstallation of a defective one with a new one giving me a warranty claim number. I asked for a manager and he told me they'd give me $300 toward deinstallation and reinstallation (let's see $900 - $300 from Rheem - $250 for permit already in place = $350 additional costs to me plus delivery of new water heater).
Put in a complaint with Rheem with Better Business Bureau and now without hot water for a week. I should not be responsible for costs above and beyond what I paid for the water heater from Home Depot, the old water heater deinstallation and removal and the new water heater replacement due to a major manufacturing defect with potential for harm of plumber and consumer.

I purchased the following Rheem unit on 2/20/15 and had it installed on 2/22/15: Rheem Performance Platinum 40 gal. Medium 12 Year 5500/5500-Watt Elements Electric Water Heater with LCD Display, Model # XE40M12EC55U0. What a piece of junk. Paid $448 for the unit and almost $1000 for installation. Upon installation, I got an error code and the unit would not heat up. I called Rheem as explained in the booklet, and without any further discussion or trial, was told the lower thermistor would need to be replaced. In order to do so, they would have to ship me the part within 2 days, which I received in 1, and then their contractor would come to replace. No contractor ever called.
I called back Rheem after receiving the part, and was told to contact their contractor directly. I did that. The guy from the contracting company never received my work order from Rheem, therefore, I was directed back to Rheem. During the conversation, the contractor had nothing but negative things to say about working with them and that his list of clients is so long, it would take 2 to 3 days for them to come out after receiving the work order. After speaking with someone else from Rheem, I was told that I could use my own installer and be reimbursed. Great! I did that. The part was replaced, and the unit still did not work. At this point, I call back Rheem who tells me that they "think" that it may be the panel entirely. They think.. They do not know it will be here in 3 days.
Mind you, I have already been without hot water for 3 days now. It has been below 0 here. I cannot shower, wash my dishes, or wash my hands in warm water. So now, I have to wait 6 days for a new hot water heater to maybe start. According to the managers, there is nothing else they can do and will not replace a brand new unit. I am livid! I cannot believe that such a huge company cannot do anything more for me. I have now spent over $1000 for a new water heater and install that does not work. This is just unacceptable.

The Rheem inducer died after only 2 years, which means it ran only 12 winter/fall months. The original cost of install for the inducer was about $500 for the inducer and $200 for labor. The furnace filter was changed every month during use and the newer furnace was serviced yearly. The inducer was clearly a LEMON. Since the company that installed it claimed their distributor would not get me a replacement after I offered to pay their cost but no profit, (I didn't think it was right they sold me a lemon and then make a bunch of money selling me a replacement), I called Genco. Genco was who the installer of the furnace told me to call because they "now own Rheem/Ruud."
Genco was not even remotely willing to help.... much like most reviews I read about Rheem/Ruud service. You can add Genco to the poor customer service list with Rheem/Ruud. Just bought a new inducer online for $210..... so I can get my furnace working again. The contracting company said the cheapest they could get one for from their distributor was $367..... We installed a new Rheem Heat Pump rheem heat pump 13PJA18A01 in June of 2011 in a high end condo. From the very start we had problems with the A/C not working. The contractor came back about 6 times trying to resolve the issue, adding more freon, etc. Then he stopped taking my calls. I was forced to hire a new HVAC person and they found a leak in the heat pump coils and believed it came that way from the factory. I contacted Rheem by email and phone and they said that would never happen that my HVAC installer must of damaged the unit so will not pay for the repair $330 or the very high electric bill.
Next a heat relay in the air handler went out, then the heat expansion valve, then the coils need replaced in the air handler. My contractor told me the coils was something he was not surprised about because that was a known factory defect and he has replaced every coil in every unit he has installed...they fail with in 2-3 years. I called Rheem and asked at what point is this unit considered a lemon, but they just blamed it on my original installer. Besides all the repair bills, the electric bills have been outrageous. I have already reimbursed my tenants $1200 for high bills due to the heat pump not working properly. I have also paid about $500 extra in electric before the condo became a rental. Last week, I just got a call from my tenant that his last electric bill was $560.
The condo is 1190 sq ft in Louisville Ky. I have a 100 year old house with old windows and a 25 year old gas furnace and 4 dogs that go in and out all day. My house is 3700 sq ft and my bill in comparison was $485. Of course I called the HVAC people, and this time could find nothing wrong. They suggested that I might be better off replacing the unit since it seems to be a lemon. It is only 3.5 years old and every time I get it repaired I am hopeful that it will work. I have no more hope.

Thereafter, the pilot light had to be lit, but then would only stay on less than an hour. Then I lit again. The next day it was out. So I called tech support and they ask for pictures of install. I send.
By this time, I call my plumber who installed unit. He could not get it going. So I call tech support again, they say thermal couple is bad and they send one. Their plumber comes out to install and the darn heater still won't light. So he call company and tells them it's the igniter switch wire is bad, they send that out. Long story short, back in 2010 I had the chance to have a brand spanking new Rheem oil burner installed for free to replace a very good, reliable and well-running oil burner, which was installed way back in 1979 as a new unit and never had a problem with it. Boy do I wish that I still had that unit, over this four-year old piece of junk. It might have been a little tired, as I was told, but so what, after 31 years - what do you expect - it's normal wear and tear. From day one, upon the installation of this Rheem unit, it has been a problem with the smell of raw, unburned oil coming up through the heating vents. It doesn't happen all of the time, but it shouldn't be happening at all. It is nasty when this happens and you never know when it will strike again. I have contacted the clowns who installed this unit, of course they portray "the three stooges 21st century style" - they are totally clueless in Massachusetts. I won't even allow them into my house for a third time.
I contacted the public assistance agency who was instrumental in my receiving this wonderful product. I have called them only six times in the last four years concerning this problem. I am told consistently by the same person, each time, that there is nothing that they can do about it. I have asked them if anyone else of the approximately 120 homes that have had these furnaces installed has had this problem with their unit. I am told no, that I am the only one. I suppose that this is possible, but a bit unlikely, I feel. Even though this agency takes the lowest bidder, I don't know who or what to believe, or not.
I have only contacted Rheem four times in the last year and you never hear back. So now I am thinking BBB, possibly FTC, or some other applicable agency. Maybe sue Rheem, the installer, or the assistance agency. It is hard when you don't know what to do. I suppose that I could go to one of my elected officials, I am so sure that these underpaid $120,000.00 per year cronies are real interested in helping out with something like this. Thanks for reading this.

My old hot water heater started leaking and needed to be replaced immediately. I went to Home Depot and got a screaming deal on a Rheem ECO180DVN tankless. We looked through the manual at the installation instructions as although the associate said that the venting was included, we thought that we had better check. It wasn't and HD didn't have one in stock. Oh well, Rheem is a big name, and there was surely one in a city of 1.2 million.
I have to admit that installing the tankless was a piece of cake. What took all the time was re-routing the plumbing and gas lines to the new location. The new heater saves a lot of space. However, I did not have the vent kit, so I thought that I could get by with the old venting system which had concentric piping, similar to what Rheem has. The thing is, Rheem has an odd size piping system, and the connection to the heater was entirely different, with a pipe that slips into the inner connection (exhaust), instead of a slip over arrangement with a pipe clamp like everyone else.
I couldn't fire up the heater the first day because I didn't have a means to connect the exhaust. I went to 5 different wholesalers to try and find the proper vent system. All of them asked for the Rheem part number for the vent system which Rheem doesn't even provide in the manual. They told me that they would contact Rheem and see if the thing was even available anymore as they had checked stock in Canada and there wasn't one in the country!!! I got a call back and was told that Rheem had one in the US and would ship it to the wholesaler, cost unknown to me. I am expecting it will be very expensive.
In the time being, I machined an adapter to snuggly fit a 3" copper pipe to the exhaust fitting, and coupled the 3" vent line to this, clamped the pipe in place and wrapped the connection with aluminum duct tape. This seems to work, but if the house catches fire, I am sure that the insurance company won't be happy. Needless to say, there is a gas and CO2 detector, plus a smoke alarm installed in the furnace room!!
Now, I have hot water, but from time to time, the heater starts vibrating so badly it sounds like a semi-trailer driving down a rumble strip on the highway. It happens usually when there is a large volume of water being used, such as filling up a bathtub. I did manage to download a service manual for this heater, but there is no mention of this problem. I haven't called Rheem as after reading the comments here, it doesn't seem likely that I will get any useful info.

I needed to purchase a new natural gas water heater because my Rheem / Rudd brand started leaking. It was installed in 1992 so I figured I couldn't go wrong buying another Rheem. Bought it at the big box store, took it home and had it installed within an hour. I tried to start it up using the easy start system, but the pilot would not stay lit. They idiot proof these new water heaters so you can't actually access anything or complete any kind of small repair.
All over the box, the tank, and instruction manual it says that I can't return the unit to the store. I have to call their 1800 number and get assistance. This is where things get interesting. I called the number and explained what was wrong. The support person walks me through the same stuff that's written in the instruction manual. He comes to the conclusion that the unit is defective and tells me a work order will be created and within one day someone will call me.
Of course a day passes and no one calls me. So I call Rheem and they tell me that a local company has the work order. Called the local company and they tell me that they don't have the part to fix the tank and they can’t come out until Rheem sends ME the part. I call Rheem, and of course they tell me that they won't send me the part and that the local company has to first come out and diagnose the problem. At this point I am angry and explain to them that it is the middle of winter, I have two small kids and just want hot water.
I ask if I can return the tank to the store and they tell that they won't authorize a return until the unit gets diagnosed. I call the local company back and they tell me that Rheem is giving me the run around and that the part is probably on back order so it could be weeks before I get the problem solved. He tells me I would be better off dealing with the big box store. I called the big box store and explained the situation and they agreed to take the unit back as defective. The big box store and the local company apologized. Rheem were jerks. I hope the company goes bankrupt and all of their support people lose their jobs and have to go without hot water.

Rheem Marathon water heaters come with a lifetime warranty. A licensed plumber installed this water heater just under a year ago. The heater began making loud noises, like a metal object was hitting another piece of metal. I called the same plumber back to check on the noise. He examined the heater thoroughly and found nothing that would have caused this problem to arise. He asked me to call Rheem Customer Service to see if they could explain and offer a solution to the noise. (The noise has no relation to water use, time of day, or any other variable I could think of).
My first call was answered by Lori, who asked for my serial number, then told me to adjust the flue baffle and that would eliminate the noise. She was in a hurry to get off the call. The electric Marathon has no baffle. My second call was answered by Valerie, who also took my serial number. I specifically told her the heater was electric. She then told me to take off the two covers on the front, determine which light was on when the noise occurred, then call her back with the information. I took off the covers to find that there are no lights. She was also interested in ending the call. My third call was answered by Nick, who apologized for the other two agents of Rheem, which he could see from the record of calls I had made previously. He suggested draining the tank to see if that would eliminate the noise. I asked the plumber about this and he stated that there would be no need to drain the tank given its age. So I am left with either calling Rheem yet again for what appears to be sketchy advise or learning to live with the noise.
Rheem's Customer Service seems to be "time on the phone" driven: when you get a trouble call, give some kind of answer and get off the phone as soon as possible. Not a good system to encourage customers to buy any Rheem product in the future. Their responses to my problem seem to treat the Lifetime Warranty as a mere piece of paper used as a sales aid only. Beware of Rheem products!

Water heater died two days before Thanksgiving. Knowing I had guests coming for Thanksgiving dinner, I bought a Rheem gas-fired water heater at Home Depot. Installed it (which took me quite a while as I am not a professional plumber). Pilot would not light. Called technical support. They told me they were over-nighting the required part to me to arrive the following day and that a local plumber would call me to schedule installation. Guy never called. Second call: Was told someone would be calling me within another hour. Third call: Rheem then told me they personally called another plumber in their service network who would call me "within minutes". No call. I called the plumber. He told me he could not schedule install until he knows I have the part. Fourth call: Rheem told me they could not confirm the part had, in fact shipped until the following morning.
Fifth call: After a long time on hold they told me it had not shipped yet. Now advised it would arrive the day after Thanksgiving. I asked where I could buy the part locally (at my own expense). Tech support told me they don't have that info. I argued they MUST at least know who their wholesale distributor is in Maryland so I could locate the part and advise their local plumber that the part is available or pick it up and have it available at my home for him to install. Rheem tech support guy just kept repeating they don't have that info. I asked him to do me the favor of calling their parts division to find out. Told me they don't have the info necessary to make that call within their own company.
I elevated the matter to a supervisor. He just kept repeating they are the tech support department and don't have the info necessary to contact the parts division. No rationale. Just kept repeating, "We are just tech support. We don't have that information" over and over again as if purposely trying to irritate me. I asked to elevate it one level higher - just to find out who is the local parts distributor. Was left on hold for 35 minutes before I hung up. The call wasted more than an hour.
Calls the prior day amounted to nearly two hours. Then I called 8 plumbers and 6 supply companies around the state. Was told by several of them that no company stocks Rheem water heater parts. It became clear why Rheem tech support refused to provide the name of any wholesaler or retailer of parts in Maryland and simply kept repeating, "We are just tech support. We don't have that information". There are no parts wholesalers nor dealers who carry Rheem water heater parts - at least in Maryland and Virginia. I'm hoping the part will arrive the Friday after Thanksgiving and that it can be installed the same day. Otherwise, we will have gone an entire week without hot water due to a defective new water heater and desperately horrible customer service.

They replaced it and 10 minutes later the unit shut down again. Now they are saying that the TXV on the heat pump is causing to short cycle on heat - will again be out Labor of $625. This is a nightmare and all the RHEEM service center says is they are not responsible for labor. WHAT ABOUT putting POOR QUALITY PRODUCT in consumer homes. WARNING to others - RHEEM does not take accountability for bad products.

The Rheem tankless water heater is nothing but trouble. We have had constant failure of the unit since it was purchased. I have been on the phone with customer service several times trying to self diagnose the problem along with one of their representatives. The same error code keeps coming up time after time and I can't seem to find any plumber who will work on this unit, apparently because it is such a defective POS that no one wants to touch it. We have even had our gas meter upgraded for a larger one, but the tankless continues to fail. I am hoping to participate in a class action lawsuit against Rheem. The unit is clearly defective and they have offered no solution.
In the meantime our family continues to be without hot water several day a week, as paying to have the entire water heater replaced is out of our budget at the time. Considering we spent around $2,500 for it(including installation) 2 years ago, it is quite a disappointment that the company will not even recommend someone for repairs.

As part of a major remodel project, which included new plumbing and gas lines, we had a Rheem tankless water heater installed in the summer of 2012. In about 7 months we began to have trouble. When the hot water was turned on somewhere in the house, the tank would attempt to fire up but wouldn't actually ignite, and then the unit would flash an error code #11. The person needing hot water would wait and wait for it but would never get it. This happened more and more frequently. The plumber who installed it sent a Rheem rep out who blamed it on insufficient gas pressure, without actually testing the pressure. HVAC guy said we had large supply line to the unit. Rheem manual (only obtainable online) was of no help.
Finally after months of a continually worsening problem, a person on the Rheem help line told us it was probably dirty ignition coils. She gave us instructions on opening up the unit and gently cleaning the fragile coils. Now we have to do this complicated process every few months. Very annoying! And the most frustrating thing is that my friends with other brands of tankless heaters have never had to do anything to theirs after many years and they LOVE their tankless heater. I HATE mine!

This year has been by far the worst!!! I have had 7 repairs so far this summer season and am currently today October 23, waiting for yet another part to be replaced. Not say same part each time either. Multiple parts have been replaced each summer for the past 4 years. Alternative, replace unit. Really after spending $360,000 to build house. Parts are always on back order with Rheem, the parts you get from them seem to fail quickly and multiple times, and when the repairman has to make multiple calls to even get the parts department from Rheem to call him, there's a problem. Multiple repair men licensed in HVAC have told us and neighbors that Rheem units are crap and to stay away. Rheem your products are absolute crap, and your parts dept and service are even worse!!

Had installed by ARS a Rheem HVAC system 7/2012, just a little over two years ago. I have a maintenance agreement with a company two times a year and use pretty expensive air filters changing them every 3 months. This week the motor in the air handler stopped working. It was replaced free because it was under warranty. Have a 10 year labor agreement with the company that installed it and the labor was free also. Thank goodness! Please don't tell me that after the 5 yr. warranty period is over on parts that I will be having to replace the whole system. I'm on my 3rd HVAC system in the last 21 years. The other two were not Rheems. My rating is only on Rheem HVAC and NOT ARS.

Rheem Gas 50 Gal Hot water Heater - Installed 11/02/2013. In August 2014, pilot light started going out. It would re-light and heater would work for a few days. Then pilot would go out again. Repeated this scenario several times. Called installer who referred me to warranty service man. Fixed at no charge but I was told that it was going to fail again, and while the part would be free, a service charge would apply after 1 year of installation. Service man said it is a design flaw, probably caused by the "Closed Heating Chamber" and the unit was not getting enough ventilation. Corrosion from carbon monoxide damaged the thermal coupling and would re-occur. Rheem Customer Service offered no advice or help.

Had a brand new Rheem JAZ Heat Pump installed in February of 2010 and since then have had a capillary tube crack (part from factory) that caused all my refrigerant to leak out and now I have a bad outdoor TXV valve which will require yet another replacement of my refrigerant and another $1,000+ repair. I've had the system less than four years and have had to replace the refrigerant twice for defective factory part issues and will pay out over $2,500 in service costs. Rheem offered me a whopping $250 credit to apply to the repair but I can't get anyone to respond to me from the company to get the credit to the dealer that is doing the repair.
I clearly got a factory lemon from Rheem and they just don't care. Major part welds cracking and components breaking this early on in the life of the unit is simply poor craftsmanship and exhibits a lack of pride in manufacturing quality components. I strongly recommend others do not buy Rheem products based on my experience with this system. I know I never will again and am telling everyone I talk to about my situation who the manufacturer is and why they should not buy Rheem products.

Suddenly we noticed that the first zone wasn't working. We called a tech and he diagnosed that the blower motor in the air handler must be replaced. After only 6 years? And of course, the part can only be ordered from Rheem and will cost us about $700 to fix all said and done. I wrote to Rheem about my displeasure and almost a week later a woman named Gina called (from Rheem) and asked for the unit's serial number and some other information. Then she told us that since it was Friday there wasn't much she could do and that she would call us back. That was almost 2 weeks ago! We've left messages for her several times and nothing. Not only does this company make a crap product but they also seem to be lacking customer service as well. And judging by all these negative complaints, Rheem appears to care less about it's image. Most reps there don't know their ** from a hole in the ground. Looked online and found some "broke-**" plumbers asking for donations to solve problems. What I did is what most should do, but don't because they don't have the time or cash. This is precisely how a company like this survives. There is not enough coverage on what a piece of ** product these ** put out. Just another sell out company that has junk put together by those from the land of dirty **.
Had a plumber buddy suggest Rinnai. So I drained the Rheem and took it back. Put a Rinnai in and lived happily ever after. Because I'm from back east and don't mind speaking out. Every time I'm in Home Depot, supply yard, hardware store, etc.. I'll check the plumbing supply aisle, and have thus far talked 3 people out of buying Rheem products. "Feel like getting Rheemed" I'd say. That doesn't hurt their profit, but if people keep it up and bad mouth them every chance they get, especially us contractors, eventually they may build a better product or at least hire a few professionals to help. Either way, I'm from the old school and it's too late, will never buy anything this company puts out and have steered other contractors to this site, so they can see for themselves the amount of dissatisfaction. They told me it was the NG controller so I purchased it thinking it would fix the problem. Well, it didn't & since they don't take back these parts, they simply refund your money if they were wrong but they wanted to keep the shipping as well as state sales tax. The contractor who installed it, fixed it by putting more 410 refrigerant in it. When I asked about the on and off issue I was told that it was a "cycling" thing going on, was lead to believe that was a normal operation. Recently I had the same problem and another tech from the same company came out and told me it has a leak and he put 5lbs of 410 refrigerant in to fix the problem. He stated the problem was due to low pressure, that is why the unit did not cool and the reason why it turned on and off.
Now I am 4 months over the 5 year warranty period, so I am told by the contractor and Rheem will not replace that portion as that is where the leak is without me paying for the cost of the part plus labor. The Rheem products are crap. I spent good money and had a contractor hoodwink me into thinking there was no problems with the unit when in actuality the problem was occurring during the warranty period. This unit should have easily lasted much longer than it did, but unless you're an ac tech you're not in the know. If you are looking to replace your furnace/AC unit look at another company. I called a water heater company who came and replaced the part and charged a total of $318 ($159 to come out and $159 for the part). They told me that they get at least 20 - 30 calls every day with this exact problem and they explained the reason was due to the parts being cheaply made in Mexico.
I called Rheem today to see if they would at least reimburse me for the part that was under warranty. I spoke to a rude manager who basically told me that it was my choice to call a water heater company to do the repair over the weekend and that I should have waited until Monday to call Rheem to get the part sent to me - which would have taken 2 days (and probably the same faulty part from Mexico)! Then I had to replace the coils unit because the water pan is made of plastic and it broke just like that, and that runs about 700.00 because the pan and the coils are one unit, so in order to replace the pan, I had to replace the whole thing. Last year I had to replace another unit of the A/C and that cost me another $500.00.
These rheem units are a piece of trash. Please stay away from Rheem, their units are so bad you will spend a lot more money fixing them than what you paid for purchasing them. I tried calling and emailing rheem but they don't answer my calls or emails, and I have no idea what else to do or whom else to contact. My husband called Rheem to receive no assistance other than Rheem would cover the part, but not the cost of a plumber to install. My husband could install, but Rheem would not even overnight the part, telling my husband it would be 2-4 days before the part would arrive. My understanding is that these water heaters are no longer made in the United States and therefore the thermal coupling will likely go out many times. After reading other reviews, I see there are others with the same problem. It is amazing that Rheem does not stand by their product and take care of all costs (the plumber's fees).
