LG refrigerator warranty: cost, coverage and plans 2024
What can you expect from your appliance’s warranty?
Every LG refrigerator comes with a limited manufacturer’s warranty. LG Electronics also offers an extended warranty for advanced protection. But before you file a claim, here’s what LG’s warranties cover, how they work and how to make the most of them.

All LG refrigerators come with a limited one-year manufacturer’s warranty that covers parts and labor for defects in materials and workmanship. The manufacturer’s warranty goes into effect on the date of purchase and covers you for one year. For most LG refrigerators, there’s also a five-year warranty included for the compressor and other sealed system parts.
LG offers Premium Care, which is an extended warranty that you can purchase within 90 days of buying your refrigerator if you’d like additional coverage. Premium Care plans vary based on several factors, including the model and where you purchased your fridge. Premium Care can extend your warranty up to three years.
LG Premium Care benefits include:
- Mechanical and electrical breakdowns
- Up to $300 to cover loss of food
- Power surge protection
- 24/7 claims filing support
- No service fees or deductible
Whether you’re relying on the manufacturer’s warranty or opting to add LG Premium Care, LG will, at its discretion, either repair or replace the refrigerator if it runs into covered issues.
Limits and exclusions
There are some limitations to LG’s refrigerator warranty. Make sure you understand these exceptions before you file a claim. Here are the top things that could get your claim denied:
Preexisting conditions are not covered by the Premium Care plan.
- Misuse or abuse: If the refrigerator is subjected to improper handling, negligence or misuse, the warranty may become void.
- Unauthorized repairs: Attempting to repair the refrigerator by yourself or using unauthorized service providers can void the warranty.
- Nongenuine parts: Using third-party replacement parts instead of LG parts can also void your warranty.
- Refurbished or altered appliances: Refurbished refrigerators or refrigerators that have had the serial number altered, removed or tampered with are not covered under the warranty.
How to register an LG refrigerator
You need to register your new LG fridge if you want to make a claim under the warranty. There are two ways to register your appliance: online or through the ThinQ app. Only refrigerators with the Wi-Fi feature can be registered via the app.
To register online, go to LG’s product registration page and log into an existing account or create a new one. Once you’ve logged into your account, you can enter the product information for your refrigerator. After everything is entered, click “Register.”
If you have a refrigerator with Wi-Fi features, you can register using the ThinQ app. (Note that LG refrigerators aren’t compatible with 5-GHz networks.) Here’s how:
- Open the ThinQ app on your smartphone.
- Click on the plus (+) icon to add a new device.
- Tap “Select Device” then “Next.”
- Select “Refrigerator” from the list.
- Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
- Press any button on the refrigerator panel to activate the display.
- Press the “Wi-Fi” or “Connect” button on your panel for three seconds until the light begins to blink.
- Find your refrigerator’s SSID (or network) name on the Wi-Fi list in the app (will start with “LG Smart”).
- Tap to verify the connection with the app (it may take a few seconds to connect).
Once connected, you can register your refrigerator using the “Preference Settings” in the ThinQ app.
LG refrigerator warranty cost
The standard manufacturer’s warranty is included with the purchase of your new refrigerator. If you want to purchase extended coverage from LG Premium Care, you need to get a quote using LG’s online form. You’ll need to provide the style of your refrigerator, where you purchased it, the date purchased, the price and your ZIP code.
For a $1,800 French door refrigerator, we received Premium Care quotes of $175.81 for one year, $250.59 for two years and $332.06 for three years. You can pay for your extended warranty all at once or opt for a Premium Care payment plan. The payment plan breaks down your cost over three equal payments and includes a nonrefundable $4.50 service charge. Payment plans for the same refrigerator cost around $60 to $112 per payment.

LG refrigerator warranty vs. home warranty alternatives
A home warranty is similar to LG’s Premium Care plans in that they provide extra coverage when your standard warranty ends. The biggest difference between a home warranty and an appliance warranty is that home warranties cover more than just your refrigerator. It may cover other appliances and home systems, which can be valuable for new homeowners — especially if you’re buying an older home.
On top of your refrigerator, here are things commonly covered by a home warranty include:
- Systems like plumbing and HVAC
- Water heaters
- Built-in microwaves
- Dishwashers
- Washers and dryers
- Stoves and ovens
- Garbage disposal
Home warranty costs vary by state and plan; however, the average home warranty costs between $450 to $600 each year and is usually paid for monthly.
Most home warranties won’t kick in until the manufacturer’s warranty expires, so it can be an affordable way to get extended coverage for multiple household items, not just one appliance. However, not all home warranties cover refrigerators, so you need to verify coverage if you’re relying on a home warranty for potential refrigerator repair or replacement.
Some downsides to using a home warranty for refrigerator coverage include a required deductible (which you don’t have with LG’s warranties) and limited or no coverage for food lost to an inoperable fridge.
Pros and cons of LG refrigerator warranties
Extended warranties provide extra reassurance when you’re buying big-ticket items like a refrigerator. Pros
- Mechanical and electrical breakdowns are covered
- No deductible
- Three extra years of protection
- Food loss coverage up to $300
- Plans are transferable if you sell your refrigerator
Cons
