My refrigerator that was bought new in 2005 stopped working. I had called Sears for a service call. They scheduled an appointment 4 days later. I had someone else look at the fridge and come to find out that I’m lucky my house didn’t burn down. The relay switch had overheated and melted the switch and the plug to condenser. This is a major safety hazard as I have read other people’s complaints, it isn’t something out of the ordinary.

We bought new appliances 4 1/2 years ago. First our Panasonic microwave/exhaust fan broke. Our refrigerator has been freezing up and the fridge part on the top gets warm and is not cooling. What is the problem with these products? They should last more than 4 1/2 years.

Model 795.77242600. The lights would not turn off when the door was shut. Resulted in the plastic casing melting. The fridge was extremely hot on the inside. Went to the appliance repair shop for the part. Told that it could happen again within a few weeks. Part was 125.00. Told that it was a common problem with this model. Very concerned about the hazard with this fridge.

The LG Kenmore Elite Trio 795.77316600 from Sears. High sale price but low quality. First the door gasket/catches broke off. They were poorly designed pieces of plastic. Now, like others in this forum, our refrigerator lights will not turn off, so they get hot melt plastic and raise the temperature of the refrigerator. I absolutely have no satisfaction from Sears. Stay away from these Sears/LG refrigerators.

We built a new home one and 1/2 years ago and purchased Kenmore appliances (like our parents) and have spent $247 on garbage compacter repairs. Now the freezer door on our Elite Kenmore refrigerator has come off the hinge. Prior to this happening, we were having many, many problems with the drawer! As of tonight, our icemaker is full of liquid water. We are scared that by the morning it will leak on our hardwood floors.

Kenmore Refrigerator Shelves have dropped onto the floor in the past several years, breaking bottles that were in the shelf. I talked to people at Sears, if they had something that could help the problem. They said they had not heard of anything like this. The inside walls of the refrigerator side have spread open, not allowing the short hangers on the shelves grasp their supports. When the door would be opened, the shelf would fall with everything coming down to the floor. I knew you people would not want to do anything about it, so we have put up with this problem for several years. Tonight we come home and try to place some left overs into the refrigerator shelf and the door shelf falls, knocking down the shelf below it and breaking jars of pickles all over the ceramic floor. Just what I wanted to do was to clean up this Kenmore screw up.

Over the weekend, we smelt a burning odor coming out of the refrigerator. When we opened the doors, the smell intensified. When we looked up, we saw that the plastic casing around the light bulbs was melting, and some of the food around the light bulbs was a little warm. I called Sears to schedule a home appointment and they set up an appointment for the following Monday.

On Monday, we received a call from the technician with him telling us that he knew exactly what was wrong with the refrigerator and that to save some time, he was just going to order the parts, and when they came in, we would be called and we would have to schedule another appointment for him to come back out and repair the refrigerator. He was told that he needed to come out and look at the refrigerator, but to his reply he just repeated that he knew what was wrong with it and that he would just order the parts and we could be notified when they came in. The conversation ended.

The ice from our 1 1/2 yr. old Kenmore/LG Elite refrigerator started coming out with silver flakes on each piece. The technician showed me that as each cube was being formed, part of the encasement paint was sloughing off onto it. The icemaker had to be replaced and the cost was over $366.00. I feel it must have been a flaw in the manufacturing (tempering process or something) and I am very unhappy about the extra expense because, besides the relative newness of the machine, there was no mishandling during the use of this product. Thank you for your time!

Came home to a house filled with smoke, smelling of electrical burning. Technician came out the next day and stated that it is a safety device that failed. The Start device for the compressor overheated and the fuse was bad.The capacitor and start relay is the issue. Maytag issued a safety fire hazard recall on the same exact part. Kenmore has never issued a recall. Now I do not have a working refrigerator as the compressor is beyond repair. Sears is not standing behind their product that is apparent to be a fire hazard.

We are senior citizens about between 65 and 70 years old and we have been suffering with this refrigerator about 5 months by hearing disturbing noises constantly from ref, wasting foods, vegetables, fruits and some other meals in the ref due to temperature, and getting disturbed by its beeping.

We have a Kenmore Elite 79575549400 Refrigerator purchased from Sears and I believe it is made by LG. The door has a water dispenser. The small water tank built into the door so the first water out that is cold is made from what looks like HDPE plastic. This tank sprung a leak almost exactly a year ago. It was approximately 4 years old at the time. It was replaced under an extended warranty we purchased. Today, it has started to leak again in the same way. A small pin-hole leak in the tank. They are going to replace it again but probably with the same part. This seems to be a design flaw in either the amount of pressure used or the tank fabrication. I see this happening every year or so and eventually when it is out of warranty. No damage was done as we have a tile floor and saw the water soon after it started leaking both times. However, if we had been on vacation, this could have caused a real issue and damaged cabinets, flooring and carpets, end etcetera.

I have a 4-year-old 3-door Kenmore refrigerator that could be a fire hazard. I noticed that the two lights inside were not shutting off due to the heat I would feel when I opened the door. Well, it had gotten so hot it scorched the bulb sockets and amp; melted part of the plastic shield. We had a hard time to even get the bulbs out due to the heat. I just would like this looked into. Even the lights not shutting off should not have made it get that hot.

I'm still afraid that it could be a fire hazard because just shutting the light off does not stop the electricity from going to that part.

I purchased a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator on May 14, 2002 model # 52562100. At 6:00AM on July 17, 2010, we awoke with a smell of burnt plastic throughout the house. We checked the house and called the Fire Department, they responded and we found that the smell was coming from the refrigerator. The cardboard back was removed to expose the compressor. The problem turned out to be the start relay and overload device, it was burnt to a crisp. We are lucky that it did not catch the house on fire. I have noticed many complaints pertaining to the same thing, but the only recall I saw was from Maytag for the same problem. Why hasn't Sears recalled the Kenmore refrigerators? This part was manufactured by Whirlpool and I see where they have the same problem but no recall. This is definitely a safety and fire hazard that someone should act on before lives and property are lost.

Kenmore Elite Trio Series Refrigerator. Same issue as others with the light assembly almost catching fire, melting the casing and inside top of the fridge. Same bulbs that came with the fridge, so the wattage is approved. The lights would not shut off when doors closed and consequently cooked the food. Left for work in the morning and returned at 6pm to melting plastic. The light assembly on the top of the refrigerator was extremely hot (could not touch) and melting the plastic housing around it. Both door switches when depressed would not terminate the lights. I shut off the circuit breaker to let the lights cool. When I went to remove the cover, the entire assembly melted off the mounting screws. Top of fridge bubbly and light sockets turning brown. Looking into a recall located this site. I have the Kenmore Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model#795.77543600. I'm shocked that there has not been a recall out there for these refrigerators when I see the same complaints on here by other consumers. Like others who own this fridge, the lights stayed on while the door was closed. I am not sure if the fan stopped working also but it was extremely warm inside the fridge when I opened it. It was warm enough that it melted not only hard foods, but also the plastic pieces surrounding the light bulbs. The plastic covering the bulbs warped. I had products wrapped with paper/plastic on the top shelf which were all very hot to touch. This could have easily caused a fire.

I've past the 1-year manufacturer's warranty and clearly this is a defect with the product, and I should not have to pay for the repairs. I called Sears who were only eager to get a technician out, so they can get an easy $70 from me. I also called Kenmore/LG and they could not do anything as it wasn't part of the recall list. She also said in order for a recall to occur, it would need to be initiated by CPSC. Why this has not been recalled by them yet is ludicrous when I see consumers throughout the internet complaining about the same issue for a couple years now.

Anyway, I reported this to CPSC. If anyone else out there had the same issue, I suggest you report it to CPSC as well, so hopefully they get enough complaints to finally do something about this. By the way, the last recall I show for this fridge was back in 2005 due to a condenser fan motor failure caused by a failed capacitor arcing and smoking. Whether or not this is what caused my incident, I'm not sure, but clearly there's some history with overheating with these refrigerators.

I purchased Sears Kenmore refrigerator in 2006. Recently, it developed loud buzzing and rattle. A Sears’ technician arrived, but couldn't diagnose the problem. He suggested 3 paid hours to check compressor and $800 to replace it. It cost me $75 for the call with no likely resolution except to spend a lot more money. Customer satisfaction surveys from Sears is poor and of no use.

I am faced with increasing noise and likely failure. No warranty protection on "young" appliance that should have been engineered and built to last much longer. I will have to look for more expensive and reliable manufacturer within next few months. At some point, I’m fearful that we'll lose the contents of the freezer and refrigerator.

I purchase a Kenmore Elite refrigerator less than 6 months ago. This morning I found it is not working. All of my food is melted or warm. Sears says they will send someone in 10 days to fix my fairly new product. It is still under warranty. They will not replace it if they cannot fix it. They said that 90 days has passed so I will be stuck with an expensive $2000 Sears Kenmore Elite 5-month old refrigerator.

They don't seem to believe their product is any good since they require a Sears contract for another several hundred dollars to insure their product past 90 days! It has me wondering, "Is this product designed to fail?" My family will be without food storage in the summer for 10 or more days waiting for the Sears people to come try to fix their refrigerator. Their warranty works, but they feel no need hurry to fix their new product (if they can fix it), so you have to suffer. I will have an inferior product (Kenmore Elite refrigerator) from Sears that they will not replace if they cannot fix it. I will have to buy a new refrigerator after only 5 months.

    Reviewed June 8, 2010

On July 06, 2008, I purchased a Kenmore tri-door refrigerator/freezer, model 795.78412.800. I was aware that several manufacturers supply appliances under the Kenmore name. I specifically stated that I wanted a fridge manufactured by Whirlpool. Absolutely not by LG. Assurance was given that only Whirlpool supplied this product to Sears. I did not purchase an extended warranty because of my past experiences with Whirlpool and with Sears. (1) It was several months later that I learned that my unit was an LG! I received letters from both Sears and LG explaining the issue with the energy efficiency claim. I called both and someone (I truly don't recall who) came out and replaced the computer board. (2) I had numerous issues with temperature control and was told that the system used air from the freezer to control the fridge and that I just needed to keep adjusting until I got it where I was satisfied! The fridge would go from warm (pork chops became slimy overnight) to freezing (veggies hard as an ice cube, beer was good and cold!).

    (3) In June of 2009, after numerous months of dealing with temperature issues, the freezer formed ice crystals and the unit ran continually. A technician came (gave me a 4-hour time frame) and said that I had gotten something caught in closing the freezer and this caused the unit to run. He thawed it out, we cleaned up the mess, and then he discovered that the entire freezer unit had been installed incorrectly. The unit would never have worked. That was the problem with the temperature issues. I didn't argue with him about the initial statement. Nothing had gotten caught in the door. This was the last day of the 1 year warranty. (4) July 7: The next day an error sign on the outside display was still on. I called Sears and was told they would need to send someone out and since my warranty was expired, I would be charged the service call. I exploded. My call to LG resulted in the same answer. My call to Sears' customer service proved worse. My neighbor who sells appliances told me how to reset the sensor. The technician had failed to reset it, thus the continued error message. I asked that my unit be replaced. The technician and a call to Sears said that it could not be replaced. My problems with temp control continued through Christmas 2009. I could not rely on food being properly kept in either the fridge or the freezer.

    (5) February 27, 2010: The unit is only 18 months old. Everything in the fridge is frozen again. Calls went nowhere until I gave in and agreed to pay a service call. I was told that I could purchase a 1-year warranty for about $250, which would most likely be less than the service call, and that it would cover all repairs for 1 year. No other information. Finally, I agreed to purchase this warranty. On February 27-10, two sensors in the fridge were not installed properly. One was actually shoved up into the air flow channel. The upper lining in the freezer had dropped down and was causing irregular air flow. Both items were on the defect list from LG. They were to be checked only if the customer called for something else! Total service call: $238, covered by my new $250 warranty. On March 17, the freezer temperature was really falling! It was determined a thermostat in the fridge (same one that was found to be shoved up into the channel) is bad. I have to order the part. On March 22, the part was installed. It cost $400, but it’s again covered. On April 20, the freezer is at 28, the fridge is at balmy 45. Temps are set at zero and 38. I ordered a new motherboard (PCB), same thing that was the initial problem, to be installed on the 28th. The part wasn't available, I don't know when or from whom the part will be shipped. On April 27, Sears agreed to reimburse me $200 for food loss (a small fraction of actual losses for 18 months). May 6, I received the parts. I had been without a fridge for 3 weeks. May 8, they installed the PCB. The technicians have stopped giving me a copy of the costs. May 17, the fridge was back to 28, frozen veggies. Left fridge sensor (same one that was misinstalled) was ordered. May 22, left thermostat installed. Let everything settle down for a few days.

May 28, the original tech from February decided to go from top to bottom and compare part numbers with the list on his computer. That PCB thing was the wrong one! It’s been replaced 2 times and appears the right one had never been put in. June 8, the part finally arrived and is to be installed tomorrow. I shall see. I have been totally without a fridge for the better part of 2 months. My neighbor sent a loaner to me this week. All this time, I have been constantly calling Sears all the way to their Escalation Department. I have spoken with managers at the store, talked with numerous people, they all agreed that this thing should have been replaced when it began having a problem. All the problems have been documented as problems by LG. But no one will replace this Alliance: my "warranty" was purchased after the 1 year and does not provide for replacement. Only if a single part cost more than $500 will they consider giving me a $500 credit toward another product. I paid $2000 for my fridge.

To date they have replaced virtually every part except the condenser, repaired parts that went through quality control undetected (if LG/Sears even have a QC department), spent well over $1000 on parts alone. Each appointment has required me to sit around waiting for at least 4 hours, used a good Samaritan’s loaner, and used words that would put a sailor to shame. I have had limited contact with LG (one time was enough). I purchased this item from Sears and Sears should be the one to answer for LG's mistakes. I don't know what will happen tomorrow. I do know that, fixed or not, neither company will ever get a good remark by me or get another sale. I have been a life long customer of Sears, dating back to my childhood and ordering from their catalog. Never again. Economically, I have lost full loads of fresh and frozen foods on 4 occasions. The time waiting on technicians and then again for parts to be installed have been enormous. They have probably made 14 trips, which equals to almost 60 hours of my time waiting. Add my frustration at the dozens of phone calls to customer service. The store manager has not returned my calls. This product was defective in many areas prior to being delivered to my home. Someone should take responsibility.

Not a problem with the service technician, but with my refrigerator. I had all new kitchen appliances installed by Sears in 2005. The technician just told me today that the Tecumseh compressors are prone to problems. Mine is locked up. Approximately $800 to fix. I also had Sears out three times in the first six months fixing problems with this unit. They did get it fixed and I have not had any problems until now. I was taken by surprise at the cost so I paid the service call and let the technician go.

After calling some other repair services, I came across an ex-Sears technician told me this compressor has a 99% failure rate. Coming from an ex employee, I have to take what he said with a grain of salt. However, the Sears technician told me the Tecumseh compressor is problematic and now I hear from others who say this compressor is bad news.

I feel this should be considered a manufacture defect and should be replaced at the manufacturer's expense. I also have Sear's newest Washer and Dryer from a year ago. Even my lawn mower is Sears. I am really disappointed that Sears did not offer me any discount or other resolution to this issue. If this compressor is under recall or whatever may apply in this situation please advise me of my alternatives.

Have a french door Kenmore Elite fridge that we bought, along with several other Sears appliances in 2006. The other morning, my wife got up to find the light assembly melted, just like so many others have reported on this site. I called Sears home service line, gave them my model number and told them the problem. They wanted to send a tech out for a service call at my expense. I told them that wasn't good enough and passed on the offer. I got all my paperwork together (print outs from the similar complaints on this site, as well as photos of the damage and any unscrew-able melted pieces and put all the kids in the truck to go have it out with the manager at Sears.)

I first stopped by the parts/service department at Sears and the guys behind the desk looked up the Service Flash mentioned by "Lynn of Sacramento" on this site. The new Service Flash number is SF46-515R4. They told me to call home service and give them that number and they should send a tech out, no charge. The next day there was at tech at my door (nice guy, been to my house before to fix my also new washer), he ordered the parts and told me that it would be a no charge deal. Whew! All you people with the melting light assembly issue, call Sears home repair and give the, the service flash number SF46-515R4! It should fix your woes.

What's funny is, when I called Sears Home Service the first time and gave them my model number and problem, the guy didn't say boo about there being a service flash for my type of problem. He just wanted to set up an appointment for me to pay for a tech to come out. Perhaps all would have been fixed in the end had I agreed to it, but still who knows. Thank God you people were here with your reports on this site to set me in the right direction. No major economic consequences since I was clued in on what to do (hooray Consumer Affairs!). My fridge has melted plastic and scorched light sockets, but the tech said they will be replaced. If there is such a problem with these units, then I should have been notified by Sears prior to the problem.

The part must come from LG which has limited distribution. The part arrived and was replaced on Saturday, six days later. We paid approx. $1,300.00 for the unit and we expected to get trouble free use of it for at least 5 years. Sears has previously been known for good quality products but now, they are using parts that are not readily available if there is a problem. We had no refrigerator for six days and a service bill of $164.22 for parts and $130.00 labor plus loss of food. I doubt we will ever use Sears again.

I purchased a Kenmore Trio Model 795.7759600 3 door refrigerator in 2006. Last week, I noticed a smell from the refrigerator. Finally I realized the refrigerator lights were staying on when the refrigerator was closed. The light fixture was very hot and had melted the light fixture components and bubbled the plastic of the refrigerator lining under the light fixture.

Sears was called and I was connected with the complaint department. I was told that there was a service flash and they would reimburse me for the parts I had ordered and also pay for the service call and any damaged food. Service tech called and stated the service flash is only good for 3 years so I would have to pay cash. Based on what I read on this website, I do not understand why there was no recall for this model series since many consumers have experienced the same problem. Based on what I read, this is a potentially hazardous problem.

Luckily, I was home after a few hours away that day. Sears was once a reputable company that would take care of issues like this. I guess they no longer care. If I cannot resolve this with them, it will mean that I will no longer purchase their products or any other product from them. The consumer is the loser as usual. Some of the items in my refrigerator were damaged as was the liner of my refrigerator. Components related to interior lights were melted and must be replaced.

I bought this refrigerator from Sears model # 795-77562600. It is a beautiful refrigerator but is definitely a lemon. I have maintained a service plan on it since I bought it, thus repairs have been minimal for me.

    1. The rollers on the meat keeper were broken. I ordered the part from Sears and installed them my self rather that get a service call.
    2. Then I received a check from LG (uncashed) with a letter stating that this refrigerator was not energy star rated as advertised. Consumer Reports article states that the energy use was more than double what they tested because LG had misled them. I am very angry as energy use is important to me.
    3. Ice maker began to not work. It would make huge amounts of ice that would fall all over the floor when the door was opened and than would make no ice for a while. We had the service man out and he could find nothing wrong. We also had broken rollers on the produce drawers. He ordered them.
    4. Ice maker continued to have problems Once more we called service and he ordered a new ice maker after assessing it. At the time we told the service man that the refrigerator was making a noise like a vibration periodically. He took the back off and could see no problem.
    5. The produce in the drawers and on the bottom shelf freezes. We have thrown out much dollars worth of produce. Service ordered a shelf that goes inside the drawer but for only 1 drawer. There is condensation that constantly forms on the shelves and inside of fridge.

    6. Once again, I am waiting on service to come out and install the ice maker but now my refrigerator is showing a code on the screen above the ice dispenser saying FF. I looked that up on the internet and it means Freezer fan failure. Well must be the vibration that I complained about on the last service call and they could not find a problem.

Now, I am sitting here with a refrigerator that I paid $2,500.00+ for as well as three years of service, and all the food that I have had to throw out, that does not work at all. Also, I have lights that are burned out but after reading about all the fires, I am afraid to replace it. It seems to me that prior to my model being manufactured, they had a problem with this same fan causing fires and they recalled the fridge at that time. That recall did not include this model.

They were the same problems with the lights staying on, melting inside of refrigerator, and basically cooking food inside. I called Sears. They sent out their repairmen, telling me it would be $75 just to come out. Whatever, send him out. He called, and basically chuckled on the phone when I told him what happened, and he proceeded to tell me that he has changed out many over the last year. I asked him why I haven't received a recall on it, and he said they call it a rework!

Call it what you want, but why was I not notified of this serious fire hazard! I spoke with many people over a 3 hr period. They just kept blaming the manufacturer, putting me through another dept, only to get nowhere, except they will give me a 20% discount to come in and purchase another one. Right! They ordered the parts, and said they will come and fix it, but it will never be the same, my inside is melted, and I don't trust it again.

Over the past few months, everything in the fridge has been freezing up (started in the veggie crisper) and then getting "snow" in the freezer, which also has put an end to the water dispenser issuing water. Now let’s talk about that too.

For the past year, I have been getting a brown film floating in the water that comes from the dispenser. I have flushed gallons out, I have changed the filter, etc. I don’t know what else to do. I know it’s going to cost something to have repairs done. Sears used to stand by their products. A 2 year old fridge shouldn't have problems this soon. It’s a Kenmore, for goodness sake. I have lost hundreds of dollars in food cost already and can’t keep fresh veggie/fruit/or eggs to feed my kids. I can’t imagine what a repairman will charge.

I purchased a Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator made by LG in Oct. of 2006. Within warranty period, an error code showed up on the LED requiring service. I have never been able to get an exact explanation of the cause but the information I've gathered from the various technicians is that this is an error code for the icemaker but that information is not readily available in the manual or online. The error code shows up on the LED. Temperatures cannot be adjusted when the error code appears. Then I guess the water from the icemaker drips on the fan in the freezer causing it to seize up, which results in cold air not being blown into the refrigerator and the food is now to stop cooling.

Searching the internet has revealed that a lot of people have this problem with this refrigerator. Each time someone has come out, there has been a different reason. The motherboard has been replaced. Last time, a sensor was replaced. I have owned many Sears products but this is the first time I've experienced a serious issue with their product worthy enough to spread concern. I own a Kenmore Elite Series Refrigerator, model number 795.77549600. There was an odor noticed in the morning when preparing breakfast but it was slight and I assumed it to be food item related. At around noon, when opening the refrigerator, the odor was very pronounced which caused me to inspect the refrigerator further. It was noticed that the light assembly on the top of the refrigerator was extremely hot (could not touch) and melting the plastic housing around it. The smell was toxic with odors emanating from the melting plastic.

I checked both door switches at this time because both doors to the refrigerator were open. Depressing both switches made no change to turn off the interior light and the reason why the light had been on for 4+ hours. The refrigerator was unplugged and the melted light panel removed and disconnected. The plastic on the top of the refrigerator interior where the light had been was also bubbled and I suspect it would have been a matter of time before it would ignite. The bulb assembly is also browned from the excessive heat. The bulbs are the original bulbs which came with the unit, therefore it is not an issue of over wattage bulbs.

Research on the Internet surrounding this problem with the Kenmore product shows it to be a prominent problem and brought me here to this site. A brief search of the Cpsc.gov site did not show any active or post recalls. There does not appear to be any recall action surrounding this issue and I can only assume it to be a matter of time before injury or death to fire will result. I strongly recommend visiting CPSC and logging your own complaint. I will be calling Sears shortly but already assume to get the runaround from a non-caring operator.

We purchased a $1,800 Kenmore 25-foot side-by-side refrigerator in 2007. One month prior to the warranty expiring, a plastic piece that keeps the ice maker door flap shut at the front of the refrigerator broke off which allows room temperature air into the ice maker thereby thawing the ice which refreezes in the bin, clogging it and leaking into the catch basin in the door which leaks on the floor. Being busy, I thought I could get a replacement piece but no. A month after the warranty expired (1 year+), they say I need to get a new door as the piece is irreparable! The door is $650! Sears, through the highest levels, was dismissive and offered no accommodation. They didn't use to be this way and stood behind their products.

I had also purchased at the same time a $450 dishwasher, a $160 de-humidifier (that had to be returned twice), a $200 lawnmower, a $200 table saw, and an $80 microwave, and still they were no help whatsoever. Upon contacting Sears and a service technician coming to our home on November 9, 2009, we were informed the evaporator motor was gone and due to not purchasing the extended warranty it would cost of $332 to replace.

Our main concern is although we did not purchase the protection agreement, the motor to our refrigerator should have lasted more than 22 months. Upon contacting several people within Sears consumer relations, the store manager and on-source, we were basically told, “Sorry you didn't purchase the protection agreement and nothing can be done except for a $100 credit towards a new refrigerator.” I don't know anyone who purchases a new refrigerator every 22 months, but Sears appears not to care. I was even informed that things don't last as long as they used to, which is the reason to purchase the warranty. Two weeks ago, the door on the refrigerator side just fell off striking our sitter who was just walking past the unit. It would appear that at the bottom of this unit, it is put together some plastic and when this gets old, it starts to fail earlier than what would be expected. The Sears people wanted to send out a tech and charge me $100 to tell me that the door needs to be replaced. The replacement for the door is $500 and another $100 to install. In speaking with others, it would appear this unit has a design flaw and this is a common problem with the Kenmore Elite.

Sears says they have no liability while the express warranty is over. The implied warranty associated with the uniform commercial code still applies. It is not reasonable that a product failure should include the door falling off the unit through normal use. It would be like the door falling off an automobile or a roof falling off a house. It is expected that the builder of the product meets certain product safety standards and herein lies the implied warranty. I believe that this product is unsafe and could cause serious harm if left in the homes of unsuspecting consumers. The repairman knows there is a design issue as he has heard this same complaint before.

We called a Sears service repair technician out and he charged us $60 to tell us that he had seen this problem numerous times and that there should be a service flash (alert) on our refrigerator, in which case it would be repaired or replaced for free. He then went on to say that since there was not a recall on this particular refrigerator or component, it would cost us close to $500 to repair it. My husband booted him out of the house!

I went around and around with Sears (locally at the store where we purchased the refrigerator, as well as the corporate office). We were told by everyone that it was not on the flash alert or recall list so without a warranty, we would have to pay for the repair ourselves. At the time we purchased this refrigerator, we also purchased a microwave, stove (a burner went bad on that about a month after the warranty went out) and dishwasher. So we just left the light bulbs out of the refrigerator and have been living with it like that. Also the ice maker never shuts off and I end up with ice cubes all over the floor when I open the freezer (on the bottom).

Recently, it was brought to my attention that LG Electronics and Sears, Roebuck and Co. are recalling about 20,000 three-door refrigerators sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite Trio names for a faulty component in the condenser fan motor can short circuit. This could cause the condenser fan motor to overheat, posing a potential fire hazard to consumers. LG Electronics says it has received 82 reports (many more than that since this article was written in 2005!) of incidents involving a condenser fan motor failure due to a failed capacitor arcing and smoking. There has been smoke damage in a few incidents. There have been no injuries.

The recalled refrigerators are three-door, 21 to 25 cubic foot units with a bottom freezer. The refrigerators come in titanium, stainless steel, bisque, white or black. Brand names are identified on the door at the top right of the units and the interior data plate. My refrigerator Model/Serial number is not on that list even though I have been told by 2 separate service techs that the above-mentioned default is a manufacturer's defect but is not on the list of recalled models. I spoke with 2 different people at LG (1-888-294-5782) this morning and they are both insisting that if it is not on the recall list, they cannot schedule a service call to repair/replace it unless we agree to pay for the service call, parts and repair.

Help! We would like to be able to see what's in there without using a flashlight! What can we do? Also, is there a class action suit on this particular model?

I purchased a Kenmore refrigerator in 2006 and it has stopped working. I have always been frugal and bought lower end appliances which have lasted many years. I decided to buy the appliance I really wanted and spent more than usual to have it quit after 3 years. When I talked to an appliance repair store, they said that Kenmores are frequently having this sealed system failure which costs $400-600 to repair. They also stated that the repair would be using the same defective parts because Kenmore has not addressed the problem, so chances are I would again have refrigerator problems in the near future if I choose to repair the Kenmore refrigerator. It seems such a waste to throw away a near new appliance after spending so much on it. Lesson learned - I will not purchase another Kenmore appliance. After spending $1,400 for a Kenmore refrigerator 3 years ago, I am replacing it with a used Frigidaire costing $600.

On the morning of 9/14/09, I opened up my Kenmore (model number 795.77304600,manufacturing date 9/06) refrigerator. A big chunk of warped plastic fell out. It was the cover to the control unit. The lights had not turned off when the door shut and had been on all night. The control unit itself was very hot and is now barely hanging onto the ceiling of the fridge, because the connectors have melted. This unit should be recalled now, before some poor family dies in a house fire caused by this defect. I googled this Kenmore model and immediately found that this is a common problem.

    Updated on 09/19/2009:

I spoke to several people at Sears and no one had heard of the light/melting circuit board problem or service flash SF46-515 R2. I made a repair appointment anyway. The gal who booked me the appointment tried to sell me the extended warranty (Sears requires their employees to do this). When I told her that the repair should be covered by a service flash, she also did not know what I was talking about. Anyway, the repairman did know what service flash SF46-515 R2 was. The parts were ordered and will be sent directly to my home.

I also have an appointment set up for the repair. I consider myself lucky. There was no smoke damage, a fire did not start, my refrigerator continues to at least work (light bulbs unscrewed), and it all happened 2 weeks before the extended 3-year warranty for this problem would have been up. I am also fortunate that I have internet access so that I could find out about this service flash from others who have had this problem.

I have replaced the door seals on my Sears Kenmore "Trio" made by LG twice now and it needs to be replaced again. It needed to be replaced within 2 months after we replaced it the first time and now again. The problem is in the engineering of the seals. LG now manufactures doors that have a "guide" inside the refrigerator to the door seals from catching on each other. When we contacted both companies, they gave us the run around (put us through to this department and that department). The last time I spoke with anyone, they told me that the repair that was being sent to fix the recall on this product would be able to look at our issue.

The repairman said there was nothing on his work order to look at it, but he could tell me that it was an issue and that we could contact Sears to have the unit repaired (again). This is **. You spend a small fortune on a high-end appliance that the manufacturer knows has a design flaw and unless you purchased the extended warranty, they basically tell you that you have no recourse. My next move is the AG's office. It costs approximately $200.00 to replace the door seals that tear within 2-3 months after being replaced.

Today is 9/11/09. Yesterday, by luck, my son mentioned he smelled something burning when he opened our Kenmore Elite French Door fridge. We realized the internal lights were staying on and the housing had melted. I checked the door switches. Neither they nor the auto light shutoffs were working. I have unscrewed the bulbs. Am I now safe? I found this website and surveyed all 17 pages of the complaints, and there are 34 separate complaints about this extremely dangerous issue. This is a fire danger! Firemen responding to customer calls of smoke and/or fire have confirmed it!

I was horrified to see all the other problems customers are having with their Kenmore refrigerators (e.g., water leaks, exploding shelves, and fridges breaking down) and I sympathize with their difficulties. This fire danger is a potentially life threatening situation. Sears/Kenmore/LG must be held responsible for fixing this problem and assuring their customers that having their products in our homes is safe! How can we hold these companies accountable?

I purchased a Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator almost three years ago. It is model # 795.77563600 and cost approximately $2,300. It worked fine until about one year ago. It stopped running and gave the error message ER FF. The manual was no help but after researching on the internet, I found that the FF was for freezer fan. The problem was that ice buildup had caused the freezer fan to stop turning. This had happened to a number of people and the fix was to use a hair dryer to defrost the back of the fridge. I have had to do this a total of three times since May of this year. This is annoying and obviously a design error on LG's part (this model is made for Sears by LG). Although this has been annoying and inconvenient, I have lived with it.

Then a few weeks ago, I received a letter with a check for $3.55 from LG explaining that the energy usage of the fridge had been misrepresented and that this was a check to cover the average cost of the difference between the reported energy use and what it actually uses. They will schedule a modification to correct the energy usage and will send yearly checks as well. I have yet to receive anything about when the modification will take place. I am a reasonable person and so I accepted this problem also. I have not cashed the check yet as I am a little wary of doing so because when you do, you are releasing LG and Sears from any other claims to which the payment relates. I was thinking about it but then today something else happens.

I opened my fridge and could smell a burning plastic smell. After a little investigation, I discovered that the lights are now remaining on in the interior of the fridge. They had gotten so hot that the plastic surrounding the light casing had begun to melt, not to mention that my fridge was running at full capacity continually to combat the extra heat that was being produced inside the fridge. I once again turned to the internet and have discovered that this is an ongoing problem with many LG and Kenmore Elite fridges. I am not alone. In fact, many unhappy and angry consumers such as myself have posted about this. This also seems to have been a problem for LG as they actually had a recall for fridges with the same problem back in 2005.

So, I called Sears. They of course are very sorry and will be happy to send someone out to my home to repair it for $75 plus the cost of parts and labor or if I buy a one-year warranty for $261, neither of which are acceptable for an obvious manufacturer defect. I then called LG since the moderators on these boards have pointed out that Sears may sell the item but LG makes it so they should be the ones who provide the resolution to the problem. Well, big surprise. LG says Sears should cover it. In the letter with the above-mentioned check from LG, they stated that the expected useful life of their product (i.e. the fridge they produced) should be about 14 years.

Hmmm, this is far from the 3 years I am getting. I saw a talk on one or two websites about a possible class action lawsuit of which I would be happy to join at this point. These fridges are obviously covered in design flaws and even downright dangerous as some have cause small fires due to the light problem. I am hoping that this will get some action from others and in turn from LG and Sears.

Literally hundreds of people have reported this part failure, and yet, Sears/Kenmore has not recalled the part, which costs all of $11.99. While looking for information on this part, I determined that there was a CSPC recall on my fridge one year after I bought it; and they never notified me! I am frustrated that a common failure has not been appropriately handled, and that a serious recall wasn't handled well either! The failure of the fridge this week was subtle - the fridge continued to run, draw power, and dispense water; and the lights came on when opened. It just does not chill at all.

When I called Sears to schedule a service call, the earliest they could send a technician was 6 days away. We are predicted to have the hottest heat wave in recent history over the next 5 days. So, it is a particularly painful time to go without refrigeration for several days.

That and the ice bucket being on the door would give us more room. Water will start running down the door from the ice maker and we know it's time for repair, but it's hard to get it loose and lift it up at the same time. My question is, is there anything that can be done where I can use the crushed ice and not have it freezing up? I do not use the crushed ice now, but would love to.

They stated that there would be a $70 service charge but that I could buy a warranty for $299 which would cover $500 worth of fees. My problem is I have always had Sears appliances. I am 52 years old. My parents have always had Sears, which is why I stuck with Sears. The old refrigerator was 16 years old and still cooling, when my daughters purchased this one. I am appalled that this one did not last two years. Also, the Sears tech could not come to see what was wrong with my refrigerator for five days from the call. I believe it is because I would not purchase the warranty then and there.

To top it off, the sears rep. said that I could only call back three days before their visit should I want to buy the warranty. Furthermore, I called a local appliance repair guy. He took off my freezer covering to discover that my refrigerator had been worked on, the thermostat was hanging loose, and the wires taped with electrical. Someone had made repairs prior to selling the unit. He told me that the compressor was gone, after a diagnostic test of $69.95. The new compressor with a warranty would cost me $450. I am now irate.

First of all, Sears sold me defective product that they worked on and now I am having to pay for extensive repairs. I am a single teacher, who has been experiencing one financial hardship after another. I have a $20,000 dental bill, my car was hit by a driver with no lights and my budget is gone. Now, I have to figure out how I am going to pay for a practically new refrigerator that was sold defective. I have lost all of my food, $69.95, and I still will not have a refrigerator, because I cannot pay for new compressor right now.

I feel since Sears has been deceptive in their practices that they should send me a new refrigerator. At, best, they should replace the compressor with a full/extended warranty. After reading the other complaints about Sears and these side by side refrigerators, I am surprised that more people have not come together to file a class action lawsuit. This is ridiculous. I am just a hard working person, who needs at least the basics-a refrigerator.

How in the world is one to keep a refrigerator clean if you can't wipe it out with a warm, soapy cloth occasionally? I feel it has to be a design fault in the manufacturing of the glass or there was a problem with that particular shelf from the beginning. The inside of the fridge was not cold at all and all of the food on top and in the door had melted. Jam jar lids were hot! It now smells like smoke inside the fridge. I am afraid to leave my home.

I called 1-800-469-4663 at 7:30 am. They said to call back at 10:00 central time. I had to leave and got a friend to check the house. Later, I called the number back and they had a hard time locating my purchase date. We bought this appliance in 2007. Then I was put on hold so they could locate a local number but was disconnected and no one called back.

This product is defective! I am afraid to have it in the house. We had to move what food that had not ruined to a 10-year-old cheap fridge in the garage (it has never had problems). This is a Kenmore Elite, model #795-77556600, serial **. We thought we were buying Sear's best. We bought this fridge, a Maytag stove and microwave, and Kenmore dishwasher at the same time. Does Sears still take care of their customers? Thank you.

In 2005, we purchased a Kenmore refrigerator model 106.56364400 made by Whirlpool. In the past three months, the icemaker water line started spraying water at the inlet at the top rear of the fridge. The icemaker door sensors are blinking a code that indicates both the receiver and sending units need to be replaced. The unit has been making a knocking sound that indicates the defrost timer is going out. I have never had so much go wrong with a single appliance ever and we have been purchasing Kenmore appliance for almost 40 years. This will be the last Sears appliance I will buy.

Websites show these same problems occurring to many Sears and Whirlpool refrigerator owners and yet none of these items has service bulletins or is being covered by defective recalls. In addition to these problems, the fridge is the worst design ever. Even though it's the same cu. ft. as our last unit, it holds 25% less due to shelf spacing from each wall and curved shelf edges that prevent full use of the shelves. We had to buy another small fridge to supplement this loss of usable space. Did I say I will never buy another Sears Kenmore appliance again?

I am afraid that can cause an explosion or diminish the cooling effect. I need a person from your company to come look at it. I purchased a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator from Sears 3 years ago this coming August. It is still under warranty. I had their repairman out two weeks ago as the right side wall has several cracks in it and looks like it is bowing slightly. He informed me that because the cracks would not hamper the effectiveness of the fridge, nothing would be done. He offered to put Epoxy on all the cracks but said that it would make the fridge look terrible. The cracks are a result of a defect, not abuse. I paid well over $2,500 for this fridge and even bought the extended warranty. There is an obvious defect in the fridge.

In April 2007, we purchased a $2600 Kenmore Trio Side-by-Side energy efficient refrigerator made for Sears Kenmore by LG. Exactly two years later, we received an undated letter, with no letterhead - stating that LG had misinterpreted the Department of Energy (DOE) testing rules for refrigerators - so now, today, the rating for our refrigerator reflects a higher usage than was indicated on our original purchase materials and labels! The letter states we may be entitled to cash payments for past & future energy use and a modification to our refrigerator ice maker. So we called the number and requested the product "update" and they came and installed it for free.

LG has been making refrigerators for years - so why is there confusion or misinterpretation of the testing rules all of a sudden? And why upgrade just the ice maker? Sears/LG, the upgrade is only half complete! Upgrade the refrigerator to the energy efficient rating that we originally purchased! If you are unable to do this, bring us a new energy efficient rated refrigerator! $2600 and this is the best you can do? Get it right before we shell out $2600 for your inefficient refrigerator!

As of this date, we've yet to receive a letter of explanation of any kind. I believe we deserve a better return on our investment. But since they have our $2600 and we didn't get what we paid for originally - an energy efficient refrigerator, I'm pretty sure they are finished trying to make things right. Oh, did I mention it cost $2600?

It appears that Sears may have a manufacturing defect in a portion of its paint application process for side-by-side refrigerators. Our Kenmore refrigerator was purchased new from Sears in Fairfax, VA in April 2005. It is a black, side-by-side Kenmore model 253.55699407 (manufacture date 03/05). The paint below the ice dispenser/water dispenser is blistering (and would crack to expose rust if pressed hard). I have not approached Sears yet, but given the stories I am seeing here, it does not sound hopeful. The reason I say it looks like a systemic problem is that Kim of Little Rock, AR (06/16/08) and I appear to have identical problems. As our kitchen/dining room is the primary entertaining area in our house for parties and social gatherings, the unsightly nature of this blistering will require us to spend money to fix it.

I must say to all that first off, those customer service lines are not there to help you. They are to discourage you. They know 70% of people will hang up and if you don't, they will accidentally hang up on you. Oh and don't raise your voice with them, I mean why should you be mad? I will tell you what I'm going to do with Sears' fridge. I'm going to put their crappy fridge on my front lawn and spray paint "Sears makes junk." I'll also put a sign in the back window of my Chrysler mini van that says, "Don't buy a Dodge as I have replaced my tranny 2 times."

We vote with our dollars and I don't vote for either company. Go to Sears and stand out front with a sign expressing your opinion. It's time people give them back their own medicine. It looks good on all of you when you go out of business. You people who avoid my call, remember that you will be out of a job soon. I'll laugh in your face. You are not responsible (translation: You are unable to respond). The real word for that is useless. I didn't pay for my fridge so I don't care. But this one is for the good, hardworking people of America. Sears is, in my opinion, junk; crap; no good; and unreliable.

I bought a Kenmore refrigerator in November 2003. After I had it for about 18 months, I had to call Sears because the freezer compartment was cracking in spots. The technician came out and told me that it was a common problem with the model I bought and it was replaced. About 6 months after it was installed, I pulled it out to clean behind it and discovered that the cord had a nick in it. I called Sears to get a replacement. This was just before Thanksgiving and they told me that the soonest they could get out would be December 8. I got mad and said, "Forget it."

I taped up the cord and then I started having problems with the ice maker. Since at that time it was still under the 4-year warranty I purchased, I called Sears again. The technician came out and told me that it was because of the plastic waterline used to hook up the ice maker but he did replace the cord. The almost 4 years later to the day that the refrigerator was replaced by what was supposed to be a new refrigerator, I opened up the freezer to find that everything was thawed and the refrigerator was not cooling. There was a plug in the back of the freezer that had ice on it. When I took it out, there was a line behind it that was covered in ice. I let the refrigerator thaw completely, thinking it was just a glitch. When I plugged it back in, it still was not working. The motor was running but it was not cooling.

I contacted Sears to be told that it would cost $69.00 for the service call to tell me whether it could be fixed or not or I could just pay $224.00 and they would fix it or replace it and warrant it for one year. Kenmore used to be a name you could trust and would last but apparently, that is no longer the case. I will never purchase another Kenmore appliance or any other for that matter from Sears.

In 2004, I purchased a new Kenmore bottom freezer, original cost approximately $1300. It was a floor model; I paid approximately $900. In 2009, it started making loud noise for a few months. It quit freezing; I cleaned the freezer and the next day, it was working again. Two weeks later, the same thing happened and it did not fix itself (no miracles). So I made an appointment online wit Sears techs. On April 2, 2009, they came out. I paid a $65 fee to be told it was a compressor failure. The repair costs with parts and labor would be $700.51.

Surprise, 5 years and sub compressor cracks/pops, a potential fire hazard. I wish I had read these complaints before we purchased a fridge, high-end energy efficient washer, stove, dryer, and vacuum. We thought they were reputable. Why hasn't anything been done about these guys? Almost all of the complaints I have read since my news about these purchases (of Ignorance) are so similar. Approx. 3-5 yrs after purchase, the compressor dies; horrible customer service if you talk to a real person, and within days of warranty exp. which appear to be worthless. The vacuum I mentioned was not purchased at the same time. It also is dead. It isn't even 8 months old. I paid approximately $250. Repairs costs are approximately $250.

I took it to an independent repair business that I trust in a different town. Why is Sears allowed to get away with this obvious defective appliance sales and then they are not held responsible for the lies they say when they are selling appliances? Aren't there enough customers to lodge a class action lawsuit against these guys? My fridge looks brand new but is worthless. It's not even 5 years old. Can't somebody do something?

On 2/23/09, I purchased a Kenmore 68502 model fridge. It was not in stock so I had to wait approx 2 weeks for it to arrive... Since we are not made of money, we opted for picking it up and not wasting the money on delivery charge, (boy what a mistake that was). We get it to our new home and plug it up a day later because we had not moved in just yet. We follow the instructions and plug it up, wait the 24-hour period it says to do before placing our food in it. Well, it never worked, brand new and it did not work. Well, I call the number that Averell ** (AJ) gave me and I get routed to the customer service center in DALLAS, TX. Ok, what is that going to do? I ended up having a repairman come and take a look at it and he said that the compressor was bad, that it looked like it was used or refurbished (WHAT IS THAT ABOUT?!!!!!).

Since I can't for the life of me get a hold of anyone at the 95th and Metcalf location, I go in person and explain to them that my fridge never worked from the start. And the sales rep and his supervisor told me that they would give me a 20% discount, only if I could get it to them because they were not going to pick it up since I opted to have it delivered myself (even though it was crap and it did not work) and if I came on Sunday 3/29/09 that I would get another 10% discount... I was able to find a truck on Saturday, which by the way the weather was all ice and slush and this Sears location is about 20 minutes away from my home (in another state). The next day, my mother and I go, check out what they have again and since every fridge on the floor was way more expensive than what I had paid originally, I ended up choosing the same model, but my understanding was that I was going to get a 20% discount and it did not happen.

I was told since the fridge was already marked down that there was no way they could discount the 20%, even though I was told that's what they would do and on top of that they would give me another 10% discount but none of what I was promised happened. So I did not get anything from SEARS. I am so disgusted with their way of doing business and their poor way of handling this. I was irate and I told them exactly what I was thinking. I will NEVER shop at Sears again and KENMORE products are now off of my list of reputable appliances... If it worked in the first place, I would have my fridge and my food in it, so now I am still looking for one and my parents gave me their old one to use in the interim. So to KENMORE and SEARS I say... I hope you guys too will have the experience you gave me elsewhere in your journey and that your health is jeopardized like mine and my husband's were. Sears makes me ill!!!

The heat from the lights has melted the housing and caused the entire assembly to fall and hang by the wires. This is a serious fire hazard.

I won't go into the number of phone calls that we have made since this started a week ago. I can barely believe it myself, but I will tell you to call the Sears National Customer Relations number at 1-800-549-4505. They will help you and they will then transfer you to an internal number they won't divulge and you will then speak with someone else who actually listens and does something. I did this yesterday about noon and the local Sears store called me last night and again this morning. Sears is actually sending someone out this afternoon to look at the problem. We will see. But don't hesitate to call this number. I was truly amazed that I actually talked with someone not in India!

Sears has just now left my home after replacing the parts on my Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator 795.77304600 that I complained about the lights not going off and causing a major fire hazard. We were fortunate that we discovered the problem before it caused a fire. Sears issued a Service Flash on this problem and it most likely will not become a full-fledged recall. It cost me nothing but several phone calls. Do NOT let the Service Department tell you that since it is not under warranty, or you didn't buy the extra protection package, it is going to cost you money. They are wrong.

You MUST call the Sears National Customer Relations number at 1-800-549-4505. You need to publish this number so people can call to have this serious situation taken care of immediately. This is potentially very dangerous and Sears is WELL AWARE of the problem. Be the squeaky wheel. Don't wait to call them. It would be nice since they know this that they had contacted their customers, but since they didn't, and if you are having the same issues we did, you need to call them and be PERSISTENT.

Then there was a loud pop and we saw a big burst of smoke coming from the kitchen. We saw the smoke coming from the fridge. We unplugged the fridge and used the fire extinguisher to put the fire out. We called the fire company to make sure everything was out. Fire Company arrived and witnessed the smoke coming from the unit. They wrote a report.

I called Sears and was told since I did not purchase and extended warranty that I had to pay for a service call. The customer service rep offered us a July 23rd date to come look at the fridge. I advised this is an emergency situation; they said it was not their fault. I should have purchased the extended warranty. I have been going back and forth with Sears. I had an attorney write a letter and Sears refused to help. As a result, I lost all of the food in the fridge that was purchased the day before the fire. I only asked Sears to replace the cost of the fridge and the food. To date, I still have the fridge sitting in my garage.

Consequence: Lost food. Because of the holiday, there was a large amount of food that was lost. We had to rent a fridge to get through the holiday and then purchase a new fridge.

Sunday morning, March 23, I opened the fridge and found the light had been on all night and would not shut off. The plastic face plate that protects the bulbs was melted. The light stays on even when the door is closed (Note this was not a case of the door being left ajar!). All contents of the fridge were extremely warm and there was a burning smell.

I looked closer at the plastic light plate and found the heat was so warm it melted certain parts of the plastic light cover. I contacted Sears and they said it is not under warranty. They would send a service call at my expense. The unit is only 15 months old. This is clearly a defect. I tried to contact LG (who produces the unit for Sears) and they said to call Sears. Economic damage is the entire contents of the fridge and freezer approx. $300.00 plus the fridge was $2400. It is just over the warranty period by 3 months. This is insane and I want a refund of the purchase price and the $300.00 for the spoiled food. I looked on the internet and this seems to be a problem with this model. I opened our refrigerator to get creamer to discover the light fixture on top smoldering, the plastic around the light bulbs melting in large pieces. Of note, about a year after we got the refrigerator, I pointed out to my husband that I thought the light bulbs were warmer than I thought they should be.

When the melting stopped, I found all the food on the top two shelves was hot. The butter and margarine were melted, eggs were cooked, etc. Much of the other food smelled of burning plastic and couldn't be salvaged. Some of the items in drawers and the bottled/canned items were okay, as were the items in the freezer. After salvaging what we could, I found this site and printed out 29 pages of complaints describing similar incidents. I then called Sears and informed them of the Consumer Affairs reports, and was told Sears was aware of similar problems. A serviceman came by that morning to confirm the damage. This one particular time, I was cleaning one glass shelf in the sink with cold water and soap. The glass shattered into hundreds of pieces that accumulated in the sink and the sink drain. The drain became clogged with lots of glass. The clean up took quite a while and to get all the pieces of shattered glass cleaned up off the counters, floor and sink was a major task. But the worst part was that we had a stopped up sink from the many pieces of glass that accumulated in the sink drain and we then had to call a plumber to take the pipes apart and clean the drain of glass.

Model number 795-775-43600 Kenmore Elite. The same issue everyone else had with the light fixture not going off with the doors closed and melting the light housing and catching on fire. I called Sears and they said they would not cover anything because I had not purchased the Master Protection Agreement. I then called Kenmore who admitted this is a known issue and although I purchased this fridge 2.5 years ago and the warranty ran out after a year, they would come out and fix and replace the light housing at their cost. I then called Sears back stating that Kenmore knows about this issue and so does Sears and that they needed to make things right as this is a potentially hazardous situation. I told them that on the Consumer Protection Agency website there is a complaint where this fridge burnt down a house and killed the owner's 2 dogs.

Sears is finally now trying to resolve this issue and is trying to get me a brand new fridge. At the very least, Kenmore is paying for all repairs and service to fix this problem. I was very disappointed with Sears' reaction to this problem trying to hide behind the fact that I didn't purchase the Master Protection Agreement. After all, this is a KNOWN issue and they sold me a KNOWN defective refrigerator. I don't understand how companies can get away with this type of deception. Are we waiting until someone dies in a house fire? I hope this will be a recall or class action suit. Either way I'm going to file as many complaints with as many agencies as I can to get this resolved. I urge you all to do the same. At the very least, file online with the Consumer Protection Agency, Better Business Bureau, your State Attorney General and local news station.

Within the first week that we bought the Kenmore Trio Refrigerator (Fall of 2007), the ice maker did not work. When we called we were told they would order the part and then the service person would schedule a visit which took longer than stated. When the part came in, the service person again took longer than the time scheduled but we hung around and finally he showed up. We explained what the problem was and he unplugged the refrigerator and went out for about 15 minutes, he said to place a call. Came back and waited some more, then turned it back on and said it had frozen up and that we did not want him to replace the part that he would have to tear out the entire back and that it worked fine and if it happened again, then he would replace it.

The ice maker has never produced the ice like it should and has stalled out several times. When we do get ice, it is mixed with sputtering water. We have recently noticed a sizzling noise from the freezer but now that we are out of warranty, we have not called to have it serviced. Today we received a notice in the mail from Sears and LG stating that the advertisement stated on the refrigerator was incorrect regarding the energy rating and that we need to check ours and see if it is one of the models affected by this defect and of course it is and the letter states that we will be reimbursed an amount for the energy used and for energy in future use and they will have a service person from Sears install a modification to my refrigerator to make it more energy efficient. Which does not sit right with me.

If Sears is willing to pay for future energy use, then the modification does not do the job to correct the lie and false advertising of the product. I also was unaware the LG was the maker of this product. I thought I was buying a Sears Kenmore product. I have also been made aware that when I receive this check and I sign it, I am dismissing LG and Sears of any further liability. Which brings up another red flag. Why have we not been told of the defects and in fact why are they covering it up by this token payment for energy used and modification that seemingly does not work. I am so disturbed by this information I feel I need to have legal guidance. With my refrigerator costing over $2000.00, I am worried that it will only last another year or two and will continue to break down as all these others have.

We purchased the top of the line Kenmore Refrigerator, Model #79577573600. Paid almost $3,000.00. It has been 14 months since we purchased and the ice maker quit making ice. The repair man said that it would be almost $900.00 to fix the problem since we did not buy the extended warranty. After reading all the complaints on this site I find it hard to believe that Sears/Kenmore has not had a recall on this product.

We have had several other Fridges and never had any problems with them at all. This was going to be the last one I would buy, think that buy a name brand and the best they have to offer. I will never buy another product from Sears as all they say is that we should of bought the extended warranty. They should make a quality product and the next I will do more research. The quality of products being sold at Sears is below par and they will probably be out of business soon if that is what they are going to put out there. Consequence: $900.00 to repair our $3000.00 new fridge, waiting to see what else goes wrong with this piece of junk.

Kenmore Trio Refrigerator (Mdl #596.76503500). Refrigerator not cooling; freezer is working fine. Purchased in late 2005, installed in January 2006; serviced several times in summer of 2006, including replacement of motherboard. The fridge worked fine so I didn't complain that the door alarm no longer worked, and the temp fixture only stayed at the current temp setting (not the actual unit temp as it should read). I was just happy that the unit was working and dropped the ball on not insisting that they get the door alarm and temp fixed properly. Now, I'm facing the same problem of the refrigerator not cooling and it's going to take a full week before a tech will come out and look (of course, I'm not on warranty). Fortunately, the freezer is still working, and I have a die-hard 1992 model Amana in my garage that works flawlessly. If I have to replace, it certainly won't be through Sears or a Sears product! I think these things are probably LEMONS, but unfortunately I wasn't a squeaky wheel when it wasn't repaired correctly while it was still under warranty.

Kenmore Coldspot side-by-side #106.5323 4300 Model built 4/2004 - Our son came into our bedroom at 1:00 am saying he smelled smoke. When we investigated, we saw smoke coming out from behind the fridge and the smell was BAD. We pulled it out, unplugged it and took off the little cardboard backing. I then plugged it in and the little plastic relays (or whatever they are called) going into the compressor sparked and grew hot IMMEDIATELY!! I didn't see any dirt, water, etc - it was simply melting the plastic directly at the compressor. It looked like the insulation was scorched (or maybe black from smoke at this point). I am convinced it would have burned our house down (especially with cardboard backing!!!)

Now I don't care about a service call, something going etc., (even though yet again we see how cheap new things are compared to years ago!), but this is a safety issue and Sears should respond/take responsibility! When I googled this issue, several message boards came up and it sure doesn't look like Sears took any responsibility. Well, I'll take my shot and I can be quite persuasive (can someone say class action lawsuit?)

We bought this refrigerator from Sears thinking we were buying a top-of-the-line fabulous fridge - instead it has been a constant nightmare. It has had what they call the motherboard replaced twice now. Once because the refrigerator light did not turn off and melted the plastic on our fridge and heated all our food (I am not sure what would have happened if I had been gone for a while. The fridge smelled like a fire) and the second time because the fridge will turn off and display ER FF on the control panel. When this occurs, we have to remove all our food and put it in coolers and the small freezer we have in the garage. After the fridge is unplugged for 24 hours, we can plug it back in and put our food back in till it happens again.

This has happened about 5 times over the last year. The first time the motherboard was replaced, I thought we were fixing the errors with the fridge but evidently not. This was just replaced again last week - so we will see how long this lasts. The control panel on the ice maker also freezes up/ in which it has to be unplugged and plugged back in for it to start working. We have had numerous items break off on the fridge - drawers, shelves, humidity control knobs - it is insane! It also makes horrible noises from time to time making us believe that it won't be long till the next problem arises. I am told by the Sears repairmen that they repair these constantly and the same problems occur with each one - yet Sears won't recall this fridge? They put their name on it. They need to stand behind it or make LG take care of it.

I am scared to go out of town as we never know what we will come home to. I could have saved my money and bought a second hand fridge that would have run a lot better than this pricey piece of junk! LG sent a check today for $76.00. Thanks LG! What the hell is this going to cover? Funny thing is if I cash it, I release LG from all future liability or claims on this fridge. Go to hell LG!

On Jan. 2, 2009 my husband smelled a burning plastic smell and traced it to the Kenmore French Door refrigerator that is just a year old. When he opened the doors he could feel the heat coming from the light fixture and when he put his hand on it was red hot. He closed the doors and went to the phone to call me and heard a crash from inside the fridge. He went back and opened the doors and the component with the fridge and freezer temperature readout and the cover for the light fixture had fallen. The light bulbs had gotten so hot they had melted the top of the refrigerator and the screw housings that held it up.

He called the Sears store where we purchased the appliances. All new appliances for a brand new house that we've only been in 8 months. And they gave him an 800 number to call. He couldn't understand the person he talked to her English was so bad, she was rude and couldn't grasp the concept of the appliances being only a year old. She argued with him that they were 2 years old, since they were purchased in Oct. of '07, that would make them technically a year old in Oct. of '08, but they actually weren't installed until Dec. of '08, but we were informed that our warranty began the day we paid for the appliances. I think they should have told us that when we purchased them.

They can't get a repairman out here until Monday, but after reading more than a few reports of the same problem on this web page, Sears can keep their refrigerator and their repairman. I wouldn't have a Kenmore in my home. If my husband had not been here when this happened it could well have burned our house down. I wonder how much responsibility Sears would have assumed for that. I was under the mistaken impression that Sears would be one of the last companies that would stand behind their products and their service. How wrong I was!

My Kenmore fridge (model no. 10652602100) was purchased in 2002. It has a ten-year warranty on it. It stopped working on Dec 21, 2008. My wife contacted Sears and they said their technicians were all booked up before Christmas. So my wife called a local appliance store to get a technician to take a look at it, hoping that it was something small that he could fix. The technician diagnosed that the compressor was dead and needed to be replaced. I called Sears on Dec 26, 2008 (it was a Saturday) about the fridge and indicated the compressor needed to be replaced and the operator told me that a technician would contact me on Monday about the cost of replacing the compressor and he would come to fix the fridge on Tuesday around noon.

I left the operator my home phone number and cellular phone number. I received no phone call on Monday and Tuesday morning. I called Sears at 1:30 PM Tuesday and asked if the technician would ever come that day as I did not hear from the technician at all. She said she would get the technician to call me in 30 minutes. One hour had passed and I got no call from the technician. I stepped out to get some grocery at around 2:30 PM, thinking that the technician could contact me on my cell phone number when he can come. After I got home, I got a phone message left by the technician at 2:45, saying that he called but nobody was home and I needed to reschedule the appointment. So I rescheduled the appointment for the next day.

Again I was not given a specific time window that the technician could come and I waited at home for him (3 days in a row. That was how I spent my holidays). At around 1:00 pm, the technician called and he said he did not have the compressor and he had to order it and the cost to replace the compressor is $400. I thought to myself why should I spend $400 for such a bad service. I called the same local appliance store for a quote for replacing the compressor and they said they charge $250. I called Sears and told them I did not like their service and they charged a lot for replacing the compressor. I said since the compressor was still under warranty, I would like to have it and get somebody to put it on my fridge and return the defective compressor to them after. Then they said that that was not how the warranty worked and they needed to do the work themselves. If I just wanted to have just the compressor alone, I had to pay $260.

If I add $260 and the cost of extended warranty together, it is around $400.00. That means, I am paying for the part (and labor) myself!!! The extended warranty is useless. This is how Sears do their business. What a bunch of crooks. My in-laws have a Kenmore fridge too. They had the compressor replaced within 5 years. This will tell you about the quality of the Kenmore fridges.

We woke this morning at 8am to a smoke-filled kitchen and a sharp burning wires/electrical burning smell. It was our 22 cu.ft side by side Kenmore fridge Model # 106.53232300, 22SSA, SR1341088 bought April 2004. It is only 4 years 8 months old! We shut the breaker off to that outlet, unplugged it, opened the windows, turned on fans despite the cold of the Dec.27th/08 day; the compressor was very hot my husband noticed.

I called Sears after checking my manual which says the fridge has a 1-year full warranty, and a five-year full warranty on "sealed refrigeration system" which is further explained as, "consisting of refrigeration, connecting tubing, and compressor". The woman at Sears crisply told me that the fridge is only under warranty for a year. I asked to speak to the store owner, who has always been so good to deal with, but was told he was away for a week. She implied he could not help me further, and I said, "Well, I would at least like him to check to see if there have been any other problems with this make & model. " She said, and I quote, "We have never had any problems with any refrigerator that we have sold."

I told her what my manual says about the 5-year warranty and she then said I could call "parts and service" but if it is not the compressor, then we would be charged". I had a strong internal reaction to this, which could be summed up by saying "the service sucks & I don't trust you". To pay $1298.21 (includes tax) for a new fridge that is only 4 yrs old, and to wake to your home filled with smoke originating from the fridge, deserves more than a crisp, "the fridge has a 1-year warranty". What if we hadn't been home? Our pets surely would have died, not to mention the loss of our home as my husband is sure that a fire would have resulted. He heard electrical "zzzzttt-zzzzzzzt" sparking noises which stopped when he cut power to the fridge. He could see the smoke hanging in the air under the lights when he awoke. He woke before me.

After the Sears woman's response, I believed that even if I called Parts & Service that undoubtedly, the problem would "not be the compressor", and that I would be "throwing good money after bad". I told my husband I was through with Sears and that even if they would repair the fridge, I would not trust it. He said he wouldn't feel safe with it either. We bought a new fridge today actually, but not from Sears, and not a Kenmore. And we will never buy from Sears or Kenmore again based on this experience (ie. the Sears woman's response to our problem of the 4-yr old smoking fridge that we believe could have burned our house down.).

I expect that a new appliance will work 12-22 yrs. Otherwise, why make it? Why waste our resources or money? If the fridges of my youth lasted 25 yrs, surely a brand new fridge bought in 2004 and properly maintained/cleaned would last longer than 4 yrs 8 months! I would be ashamed to sell a fridge that almost burnt someone's house down! I know our world is changing, but I still believe in honesty, quality, and service. That is why I am making this post. Could have been worse, pets + (120,000 home + contents) but luckily we were home and caught it. Kenmore fridge: $1298.21. New replacement fridge: $699.00.

They are sending out a tech free of charge to diagnose the problem, but still insist we must cover the cost of parts and labor, but may request a refund of up to $100 on parts and $150 on labor.

After doing much research I learned that on the CPSC and the Consumer Affairs sites that this is a common complaint with this refrigerator and the cost to repair it is in the range of $600-$900. There is not a recall at this point in time but a Service Flash that is not being acknowledged by Sears.

Prior to the one year anniversary, the refrigerator's icemaker motor, which runs the ice dispenser through the door, broke. Sears took 3 visits to fix it and a total of $971.93 for parts and labor. These were covered under warranty. We also had the microwave stop working and it was fixed under warranty the first time. After the warranty period, it again stopped and we opted to replace it with an LG microwave as the cost to repair was greater than a new LG. Then the refrigerators icemaker broke in November 2007. We spent $174.60 with a local repair company to replace the icemaker. Then in September 2008, the washer stopped working. It had to have a new electronics board installed.

The total bill has not yet been rec'd, but is estimated to be $250.00. I will have this bill in a few days. Now the refrigerator's ice making dispenser motor has stopped working again. The warranty only had a 90 day guarantee. I'm assuming the work to repair will again be $971.93, which is what it was when covered by the 1 yr warranty. All three of these Sears appliances are LEMONS!!!!! A refrigerator broken 3 times in 3 years. I should have had it checked during the warranty period, but it was otherwise working. Just after the 1 year warranty ran out, the freezer got weak. Called Sears, who sent out A&E who supposedly fixed the problem while burning two small holes in my kitchen floor. It wasn't fixed. They sent another, who added more refrigerant. It wasn't fixed, so they sent another, who diagnosed leaky refrigerant and refilled. After it failed again, they sent another, who said the previous repairman should have injected dye to find the leak. He injected dye.

After a week to allow the dye to leak, the problem was found to be in the sealed part of the unit, unrepairable. I'm shopping for a new one and refuse to even consider Kenmore, even though they gave me a $65 off coupon for a replacement (making me wonder why these coupons are preprinted). Does anybody have suggestions on a black, 18.2 cubic inch, ordinary top freezer refrigerator that has worked well for them? The reviews on this website are discouraging.

We had a service rep out and all he could do was remove the ice. It would appear to be a design fault. Has any fix been developed?

I purchased the following Kenmore appliances in 2001 Dishwasher, Washer and Dryer, Oven, microwave, hot water heater, water softener, refrigerator. These were all installed in our new house. In the first year our refrigerator completely went out and had to be replaced. I had to file for loss of frozen foods twice and $250.00 does not cover the loss. They don't pay for what is in the refrigerator. They did pay. We have had 3 hot water heaters, One caught on fire, one ran over and had to be replaced. My oven door blew out the oven door and threw glass all the way across the floor. We have had two microwaves, one blew up and caught on fire. We have had up to 9 service calls on all of these products. The first year was under warranty but from there on we have to pay over $600.00 a year to renew the Master Protection Agreement. We certainly could not afford to drop the warranty. We cannot afford all the service calls from Sears. So we have paid for 7 years. I have records on all the calls that have been made by technicians. I think all the appliances were rejects and they just decided to sell them all to me.

All these appliances are faulty and there should be some way to get a settlement for them. The Hot water heater that had to be replaced 3 times. The last one ordered was delivered two weeks later and was a 55 gallon tank, I clearly told them our space would only hold a 50 gallon tank, they said it made no difference, so when they delivered they had to return it and came back with 40 gallon tank, by this time we had no hot water for three weeks so, we accepted the 40 gallon tank.

The light burned out causing the plastic casing to melt away; the main board went out, needing to be replaced and now the refrigerator makes noises, sounding much like a jet plane, waking us up every morning and doing so for 2-3 hours. We want this lemon replaced, but have gotten no satisfaction from Sears. We contacted the so-called Consumer Affairs in San Antonio and all they did was send us another repairman, who claims he can't fix it unless he can hear the noise, which ironically does not take place during his visits! The repair people are scheduled by Sears to be there on specific days, between 8am and 5pm, which means we have to hang out all day awaiting his arrival.

The refrigerator has now been used a total of 3 months. In Oct 08, we arrived at the house & turned on the fridge to find that the ice auger does not work and were told by a repairman that the circuit board is also gone. We feel Sears should cover this as a defect even though it is out of warranty since this fridge cost us over $1800. Too bad, so sad after 3 tries. It will cost us over $300 to fix it. This is clearly defective and Sears should own up to it, but the only way they will fix it is if we pay or take out a $250 service contract, which we have decided to do.

I purchased a Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator Model # 795.77319600 in May of 2007 and luckily also purchased the extended warranty. The light switch/control board malfunctioned the same as in the numerous post to this site. It melted the control unit, the top of the refrigerator and the food storage containers that it fell down on and spoiled food. This is a terrible fire safety hazard. This problem was likely going on for a long period of time because I also would experience a warm fridge and a very frosty freezer intermittently since installation and I assumed that the doors must have been left ajar. It took Sears 6 weeks to get the parts right and actually repair the unit.

I was told that there were no alerts or recalls on this fridge as it was relatively rare, now I find out it is a regular thing. I can't believe that they are so complacent with this problem. I took 5 days off from work to wait for repairman only to find out that Sears had sent the wrong parts or not enough parts or sent them to the wrong place. This repair has cost me approximately the price of the refrigerator in lost food and wages. I could have lived with that but when I tried to reach anyone who might have an ounce of responsibility at Sears, I would be connected with someone in another county who would have someone call me within 24 hours.

After numerous tries with 800 numbers, I called the store I purchased it from only to find out that those calls are also routed to a call center likely out of the country as well. Finally got a store manager that gave me the number of the local repair center and let me tell you the manager of that center is safer than Fort Knox. The person answering the phone told me that the supervisors were in and out and not available to speak to me. I mentioned that I had a house full of Sears appliances but that as I replace them, it would no longer be the case as the quality and level of service had greatly diminished. She then promised to give my number to a manager who would promptly call me back.

Well just like my calls to the 800 number, I am still waiting. If I had the money, I would rent a dump truck and deliver the 7 Sears appliances I own to the nearest Sears store. I've lost work time and food. Extremely frustrated. Just want Sears to apologize and admit that they have a problem with the unit and their customer service policy. I would be happy if someone would just return my calls.

I bought a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator Aug. 11, '08. About a week after it was delivered, it stop working. All of my food was spoiled, including my insulin. Sears replaced the fridge after a hassle with them. About maybe a month with the new one, the motor broke on the ice maker. I call Sears again, same person. They acted like it was my fault they were tearing up. They sent repair person out to replace the motor. Then on Thursday, 10-16-08, I noticed the inside of the fridge was warm, all my food and drinks was warm. I turned it up hoping that would take care of the problem. Well it didn't.

I called Sears from work. I talk to Vicky. She said they couldn't get a repair person out until Mon. I ask her what I was supposed to do with my food until then. She told me she could get a compact fridge from someone they had loaned it to, to call her back. I called after I got off work and got home. She said they hadn't got the compact back but they could loan me one if I could come get it. I told her I had no way to come get it. She told me she had already sent her delivery people home. I told her I needed a fridge and I wanted another brand name. I sure wasn't having much luck with Kenmore. And they would pay for my food this time. I didn't charge them the first time for the stuff I lost.

She got very rude with me because I was trying to explain to her I was over Kenmore products, that I wanted another brand. She told me that she couldn't give me another brand name for the price I paid for the one I had. I told her I didn't ask for a higher priced fridge. I just wanted one that I was not going to keep having problems with. And that they would pay for my food lost this time. She got very rude and told me if I would let her off the phone, maybe she could come up with something. Well I blew up after that. She acted like it was my fault their product was no good. I told her I would let her off the phone but she had not heard the last of this.

I got so upset my sugar went up to 236 and of course my insulin was ruined again. She called me back about 25-min later and said they were going to send me out another new Kenmore fridge same model. That was the best she could do. Didn't have any choice but to take it. It was after 6:00pm. I told her I wasn't happy that she got rude with me and I was tired of going thru this. This makes 3 Kenmore refrigerators I've had in 2 months. I am almost afraid to buy anything to put in it. This has been very stressful on me plus my husband who has heart failure and is not very well. The model # is 5736*70*,5737*70. I have written letters to the corporate office and have received no response. I have contacted the Better Business Bureau and Sears has not even answered their inquiries. What's the deal? Some of the folks at the warranty office have suggested that I replace my refrigerator with a different model. That is not possible since these appliances are built in. I was surprised to find that it was warm inside and smelled funny. Turns out, the lights had been on for an unknown amount of time and scorched the housing for the lights. The plastic cover was melted/fused to the housing, the light bulb sockets were brown and the top that connects to the fridge was melted and hanging down some. I had opened the fridge that morning, about 7 am and opened it again at about 7 pm.

LEMON ALERT!!!! Kenmore Coldspot side-by-side bought 2003 died 2008 - 5 years old!!!

We had a loafy old fridge that finally packed it in, much to our dismay. Sears was having a sale on its refrigerators, and we ended up with a nice, white, side-by-side fridge/freezer with exterior light, ice and water dispenser. This fridge made it 5 years when I woke up from sleeping after a night shift, finding a small puddle of water outside the freezer portion. Thinking someone left the door open overnight, I shut the door tightly and went about my day, unconcerned, as the fridge part seemed cold.

The next morning, coming back from work after night shift, a large puddle was on the floor now and much dripping from the freezer. I packed what I could into the fairly full deep freeze and piled the remaining ice into a small cooler. Salvaging as much food as we could, I put a call into the 24 hour, 7 day a week # inside the fridge. This was on Sept 25. They told me they'd put an urgent request in to the contractor in my area. I heard nothing that day. On the 26th I still hadn't heard anything and called the 1-800 # back. They gave me the name of the local contractor and I phoned him. HE WAS ON VACATION until the 26th... No one to cover him, I guess?

The next day he dropped by at around 4 o'clock after waiting all day (thank God no one had to go to work that day!) and had a look. He asked us who had worked on the fridge in the past? We told him no one, as it was a fairly new fridge, and what did he mean? Turns out we might have been sold a factory reconditioned fridge and had paid for a brand new model. Whoever fixed it used zap straps and didn't actually fix anything! He told us the fridge equivalent of a breaker needed fixing, and since it was Saturday, he'd have to wait until Monday to order the part.

It's now Thursday and we have heard nothing. We're living out of coolers, paying around $10 for 2 blocks and 2 bags of ice every other day. I tried for 1 solid hour to contact the contractor over the phone, and only got a busy signal... which makes me wonder what he's doing on the phone and not out FIXING APPLIANCES. I phone Sears back, and the customer service rep, between bites of lunch, told me there was no record of a return service call OR EVEN PARTS BEING ORDERED YET. NEVER EVER, EVER BUY FROM SEARS!! THEY WILL STAND BEHIND $10 KIDS CLOTHING, BUT NOT A $1,200 REFRIGERATOR!!!!

My husband called the service dept. and spoke to a very rude woman, who eventually disconnected his phone call.

On their website- they advertise 24/7 support for repairs. Well- we called the # and told them we needed it to be repaired. Of course it was right after the warranty expired. We purchased a one year warranty for $250. But we still have to wait until Monday (9/29/08)- 5 days for someone to come look at it. In the meantime- the fridge temperature is approximately 54 degrees. Cold air comes out the top of the freezer, the thermomstat has frozen up. I have to deal with not having cold food and milk for 3 young children for 5 days. It's been very inconvenient for all of us and I will probably have to throw out most of the food from the fridge. They should not advertise 24/7 support and repair service because its [lies]!

Purchased a Kenmore Trio refrigerator model # 795.77312600 from Sears in February of 2007. This past August I smelled something burning and opened the refrigerator to find the housing for the bulbs and temperature control unit melted right off and hanging by a wire. Apparently the lights had not gone out when the doors were closed. The top liner of the refrigerator was also warped by the heat along with the spoilage of all the food near the light fixture. Manually pushing in the door switches did not turn off the lights and I needed oven mitts to unscrew the bulbs. Definitely a fire hazard.

My call to 800, which is the number for service listed inside the refrigerator was met with ambivalence. The service representative who answered the call didn't care that my 18 month old refrigerator that I paid Sears nearly $1,500 for could have burned my house down. He stated that because it was out of the 1 year warranty that I would be responsible for any repairs. When I said that the refrigerator this replaced was more than 15 years old his reply was they don't make appliances like they used to.

My subsequent calls to customer relations, the Sears recall line and even LG customer service, who incidentally is the manufacturer of this Kenmore product, were met with the same I'm sorry it is out of warranty response. A quick search of the web for Kenmore Trio fire found dozens of identical mishaps. Apparently the manufacturer, LG and Sears are aware of the problem and have issued a service flash SF46-515 to repair this condition. Unfortunately my model isn't listed on the service information but model # 795.77312601 is.

I have filed a report with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in hopes that if enough people file a report there will be a recall to fix this dangerous product. I feel that Sears should step up to the plate and repair my unit under the same service bulletin issued for similar models as it is the same problem. I can't believe that Sears would sell a major appliance with such a dangerous defect and not take the responsibility to repair it after only 18 months.

This is regarding a Sears Kenmore Trio refrigerator. Model number 795.77562600 purchased on 12-11-06 (less than two years old). I noticed a hot electrical burning smell coming from the refrigerator. The top section of the refrigerator was very hot around the light assembly. The plastic shield around the light bulbs was too hot to touch. I pressed the switches where the doors make contact when closed and found that the lights didn't turn off and this was the apparent cause of the overheating. I unplugged the refrigerator, let the lights cool down and then removed them from the sockets then plugged the refrigerator back in.

I searched on the internet and found that this seems to be a common problem with this model refrigerator. I then called the number for recalls on Sears appliances. The person at the recall center verified my purchase information, model number, serial number, etc., put me on hold for a couple of minutes, then came back to the phone and said that my model was not on any recall lists and that I would have to schedule a service call at my own expense if I wanted the problem fixed.

In reading some posts on internet forums, it appears that the cause of the lights not turning off when the door is closed is not in the switches, but in a circuit board made by LG. The board has now been revised and the problem corrected on replacement boards. It appears that this problem is widespread and should be repaired at no cost by a recall before some serious damage is done.

I noticed the problem soon enough that there is no noticable damage to the plastic light cover and I had no food loss. I feel this is a very dangerous problem and possible fire hazard if not detected right away.

In October 2006 we brought from Sears a Stainless finish Kenmore Elite 25 cu. ft. TRIO French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator. On August 2008 this Refrigerator MALFUNCTIONED. I had left the house for about 2 hours, when I came back and I opened my refrigerator doors the heat and smell was awful. At once I could tell the interior light was the source of the heat. The push-in switch on the door frame was not working.

As I tested, the switch was pushed in the interior light contiuned to stay on and the circulating fan was not working, as well. The plastic over the light fixture was partially melted, the light fixture was scorched. The food products on the 2 top shelves and doors had to be thrown away as well as some other ify products. After removing all the food items in the refrigerator, cleaning the inside because of melted food products (e.g. stick butter in tray on the door), and opening and closing the door so many times in a row to do this process of empty and cleaning; the light switch on the doors began to work properly again.

After several hours and many tests later all seem well as the refrigerator began to cool down again. When pushing the light switch on the doors, this time, the light went off and the fan turned on. So, again I re-loaded my refrigerator with what was left of the food products not ruined.

My first concern is the lack of confidence we now have that this failure/malfunction won't happen again. If it does happen again, and not caught in time, the possiblity of a fire seems inevitable. Since the refrigerator is now working properly I conside this a DANGEROUS MALFUNCTION to consumers. Of course, the warranty on this product is now expired. But this is not a breakdown. Again I stress, this is a Dangerous Malfuntion and Sears/Kenmore needs to step up with a Recall and fix/replace the parts necessary and as soon as possible.

We do not have the money to pay for the peace of mind to have a Sears Repair Service Tech attempt to fix it. If Sears knows what the problem is, then it should be a RECALLED Free Service. I called Sears and after repeated pressing of numbers, finally got a person who did not wish to hear what was wrong with the refrig/freezer, but apparently went through a script, and informed me that it would 5 days before someone could come look at the appliance sometime between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm (8/27/08). Since that time the temperature in the freezer has fluctuated constantly from 0 to 40-up and down.

About 4:00 the day he was to come, the service man called and asked what seemed to be wrong with the freezer. I kept trying to explain to him about the fluctuation but he continually interrupted me, and said that as long as it stayed between 0 and 32 it was all right, and nothing I had told him made him think it was the therometer or the compressor. He could come check it, but could only "guess" what the problem was, and really could not fix it until it "no longer worked". The refrigerator/freezer is only 5 1/2 years old, and should not be having this problem, and should not fluctuate enough for the ice to melt.

Two days later, the temperature was 50 degrees in the freezer, and all the food was ruined. The temperature in the refrigerator was 60. I have always purchased Sears / Kenmore, but have had it with this lack of service, and reliability. I have had to purchase a new refrigerator/freezer, and will have to wait 5 days for delivery. If I was the only one involved in this, I could get by, but I am a care-giver for an 89 year old who cannot go out when alone to get food. So we have to hope that using a cooler and ice will get us by each day until the 9/3 delivery.

I have lost an unknow amount of food in the refrigerator and freezer, and will have to purchase only what we can eat each day and enough ice to hopefully keep it cold enough from one afternoon to the next. The quality of Kenmore has fallen to the point that I cannot continue to trust or use Sears.

Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 the entire ref. stopped working. I have an appointment scheduled for service. This is the second time in a year and a half that I have had a problem. I will never shop at Sears again or buy any Kenmore produts.

RE: KENMORE (LG) ELITE REFRIGERATOR-FRENCH DOOR, BOTTOM FREEZER On March 24, 2007, I purchased subject refrigerator at a cost of nearly $1600.00. It had a one year warranty. I did not purchase Sears maintenance agreement, as I felt secure since I had purchased a well known brand (Kenmore-I wasn't advised that it was made by LG) from a well known company (Sears). I will take my chances five years down the line when it comes to maintenance, but never thought it would malfunction before it was 1-1/2 years old. The beginning of August, 2008, the freezer started making a noise that sounded like a fan.

On August 9, 2008, a Sears repairman pointed out that ice was accumulating on the inside back of the freezer compartment. He phoned a senior technician, who confirmed that this was probably caused by faulty control board (PCB Assembly) that needed to be replaced at a cost of $520.83. I was astounded! This is 1/3 the cost of the entire unit. The repairman said that he had no way of testing the board to make sure that it was the problem. He also alluded to the fact that LG has recently upgraded said board because of problems they have had with it. I subsequently contacted Sears and asked why, if they knew this was a problem, they hadn't recalled these refrigerators? If there is no way to test the board, how do they know it was working properly when it left the factory? If they can't test the board, and I pay over $500 to have it replaced, how do I know it will solve the problem?

Sears agreed to send out a Senior Tech. The Senior Tech arrived on August 19 and confirmed that the problem is probably caused by the control board, but they have no way of testing it to make sure. It makes no sense that I am supposed to spend more than $500 to replace a part, when they are not sure it will solve the problem! I contacted LG and they advised that, by contractual agreement, if the unit was purchased at Sears, the problem must be handled by Sears. In addition to the two repair calls, I have contacted Sears Corporate, with no resolution. I urge you to look into this problem and take whatever action is necessary to protect us consumers, as neither Sears nor LG seems interested in doing so.

I will have to spend 1/3 of the cost of the purchase to repair the unit (which is not yet 1-1/2 years old) with no guarantee that it will solve the problem.

The heat from the bulbs has melted the bulb enclosure, heated the interior and caused food to spoil, and the light sockets have dark brown overheating marks on them.

I am concerned that if I had not found this problem that eventually something could have caught fire. I have done a web search and found that other people have had a similar problem. I researched this on the internet and other consumers are reporting the same problem. Sears is not standing by its product and paying for the replacement parts. The parts they put in as replacement are different than what was origionally put in by the manufacturer.

The lighting unit was extremely hot to the point that the butter was melting and the plastic covering over the light was warped. If we had not been home, a fire would have occured. Worse yet, if we were sleeping smoke could have filled our home with two three year olds inside and we may have woke up to a burning home. This is a very serious consumer safety risk.

Kenmore Elite Trio 795.7756,57 US. The Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator is a terrible product! I have had mine 1 year and 3 months and it has been nothing but trouble. I had either 4 or 5 service calls in the first year. The most serious ones involved the icemaker fan. A service call means getting off of work and being by the telephone from 8 am to 5 pm waiting for a call from the service person. So that was 4 or 5 days off work. Having this refrigerator is like having a sick child. You will miss a lot of work. If you make the mistake of buying one, don't tell your employer!

The service call that was the most irritating was the first time the icemaker fan went out. I waited without ice and water for 6 or 7 days for the service man to show up. He showed up and did not have the part to repair the refrigerator. That meant I had to wait another week or two to get the part. It was mailed to me then I had to take another day off of work and sit around waiting for the repair man to come put it on. It was such a mess, I had to totally defrost and restock the freezer.

My new wood floors were also getting damaged by the constant water leakage. I should mention that I told the service department prior to the first visit that the error message said the icemaker fan was the problem. Why did that not alert the service person to put an icemaker fan on his service truck? I think we had to do without ice and water for over 3 weeks, it may have been closer to 4. This refrigerator is a top of the line model that was very costly ($2308.91). I have always heard that you get what you pay for which is totally erroneous in this case. That was the first repair of the icemaker fan, the next time it went out the service man was savvy enough to bring a replacement part with him. He fixed that a little over a month ago.

I bought a service contract ($159.00) because the first year track record of this appliance was so bad. I never buy those things but felt that I had better protect myself with this lemon. It was a good move because I am now on icemaker fan number 3. I called last Saturday for service but they cannot come until the 21st. In the meantime, the temperature is 70 degrees inside my refrigerator (wonder how my food will fare in there for almost week?

Of course there is no ice and no water and water is again leaking all over my new wood floor and a piece of it is buckling up. I have had it with Sears and will no longer buy as much as a sock in their store. Beware of Kenmore Products! I have had lost food, a ruined wood floor, loss of work, and loss of time plus what the refrigerator cost.

We purchased a new Kenmore French Door Refrigerator in April 2006. In July 2008, after the warranty expired, it quit working and all the food inside spoiled. I called Sears to get it repaired. Instead of being concerned about our 2 year old $1800 refrigerator failing, they talked me into buying a service contract for $281 and scheduled a service call for 10 days later, the best they could do. A local (not Sears) repair person came out the next day and replaced the overload relay and got it working again. He said that the overload relay may have failed because the compressor was going bad. The compressor has a 5 year warranty, but only Sears can replace it if it fails. I called and canceled the the Sears service contract and service call.

Sure enough, 2 weeks later the refrigerator quit again, so I called Sears at 1-800-4MY-HOME. Again I got the service contract sales pitch and scheduled a service call for 2 weeks out. I told them it was the compressor and they should bring one with them.

Two weeks later, the service man came, and told us the compressor was bad and he would have one shipped to our house. He also scheduled a return trip 10 days later. He said the new compressor should arrive the next day and that we should call 1-800-4MY-HOME and reschedule the appointment he gave us since this is an EMERGENCY. I called 1-800-4MY-HOME and they would not reschedule since the appointment we had been given was the next available.

Assuming the refrigerator gets fixed as scheduled, it will have been out of service for 24 days. Not bad for a 2 year old premium Kenmore refrigerator! After all, it has worked 97% of the time! We have purchased Kenmore appliances for 30 years and have always had good luck and good service. That is no longer true and we will never purchase another Kenmore or Sears product ever again. This refrigerator is a piece of junk and it may be an unusual case, but a product that you depend on is only as good as the company that backs it up. Sears service operation is only there to make money, and not to protect their reputation.

We lost $500 worth of food due to the 2 failures of this refrigerator. We purchased a $650 garage frige to have something to use while waiting for Sears to fix this one. We also have an $1800 Kenmore refrigerator taking up space in our kitchen. I hope this story gets published so others will know to stay away from Sears is they are considering the purchase of a new kitchen appliance. Sears would rather spend their money building new Sears Grand stores, instead of maintaining their service business. They could care less about their existing customers!

The fridge was purchased 4/27/07, so it was just over 2 months out of warranty. Sears says I will have to pay for any repairs myself (on a $3000 fridge thats only a year old!) I went online and found that the melting light hazard is happening alot, but there is no recall. When I posted my incident online, I was #9. There are now 14! I am amazed that no one has had a serious fire yet.

I also got the circle run around. When I first called Sears, they said I needed to call LG, the distributor. When I called LG, they told me I needed to call Kenmore. When I called Kenmore, they said I needed to call Sears. Right back where I started with a refrigerator with no light, and a bubbled, warped interior roof, and quite possibly still a FIRE HAZARD. Something made the lights not turn off when the doors were shut.

I feel that this is not a warranty issue, but is a manufacturing defect that has caused a FIRE HAZARD and that Sears should be made responsible to either repair for free (safely, as some of the repairs, the melting light happened again!) or replace these refrigerators to the consumers who have these dangerous products in there homes!

After several pitiful encounters with Sears service, I have concluded that there is a fundamental design flaw inside the fridge, which (as was reported elsewhere in this forum) uses convection to circulate cool air from the freezer side to the fridge side. My guess is that ice is building up inside, and blocking the circulation. Defrosting for 48 hours barely helps. I believe that Sears no longer has quality controls in place. We are all paying the price. Next time I buy a major appliance, it will not be Sears.

I have had several negative experiences with Sears Kenmore appliances, the delivery and set up of appliances, repair of appliances both in out of warranty. My first instance was in regards to a side by side refrigerator that malfunctioned within the first six weeks of purchase. It was not cooling so I had to call for repair and wait three days for an appointment. Luckily I have another refrigerator in my garage and a neighbor who helped out. I unloaded my entire refrigerator and freezer to await my appointment. It was finally fixed only to malfunction again three months later. So I had to go through the above mentioned process all over again.

By the third time I was so angry I told Sears that I wanted a new refrigerator. I was told that I had to have four or more instances where a technician had to come out and service my appliance. I let them know that I would NOT wait for another instance and that I WILL have another refrigerator within the week. After many phone calls and finally a visit to the Sears store, I was given another refrigerator. It was not really the refrigerator that I wanted but at this point I would take anything that worked. The "new" refrigerator has given me issues on and off now for 1.5 years with the ice maker.

However, to keep from dealing with Sears any further I have just dealt with it. Now two years after using my "new" refrigerator, the ice dispensor located in the door is broken and required a new door to be repaired - with a price of $600-$700 I might as well purchase I new refrigerator. I cannot just use ice trays because the shelves in my freezer are made up of a grid of tiny bars so the ice trays just slip through. I cannot use my ice maker because without the dispenser mechanism, the ice becomes frozen in a large chunk in the bottom of the ice bin. Eventually the very bottom piece begins to melt because it is getting air from the broken dispenser door. As it melts it drips out the door and floods the dispenser tray and leaks down the freezer door onto the floor.

They definately do not make refrigerators like they used to, which is evident because of the push from the sales people and technicians to purchase an additional warranty for $300 per year. The refrigerator in my garage has been in good working order for the past 15 years and is still going. I don't feel that I should have to purchase a warranty for a NEW refrigerator.

My next issue regarding Sears involved the delivery and set up of a new front end load HE washer and dryer. The first appointment was scheduled and they were so late I finally had to go to work. I called to reshceule and they could not come until the following week. We had to go wash clothes at a Washateria for the weekend.

When they finally came and delivered and set up my washer and dryer they set them up backwards. The dryer where the washer should go and vice versa. This would not have been a problem, except the cords and dryer vent hose did not reach. The water hose looked like it was about to pull the hookup from the wall is was stretched so tight and the dryer vent hose would not stay on because it was stretched too far. He set them up this way because he did not want the doors to hit one another when you had them open while doing laundry. Evidently the "technician" (I use this term loosely) did not realize that the door to the dryer could be turned around and attached on the right side of the dryer.

When I called them back to fix it, they sent another "technician" who did not do it properly and the door would not shut right. They had to order me another dryer because the door was messed up beyond repair. Now I had to schedule a third appointment and then fight with them over two weeks to refund my delivery fee, which I was not going to pay because I now had taken off three days from work so they could come resolve three issues they created in the first place. I think it is safe to say that I will NEVER purchase another Kenmore appliance again. Regarding my refrigerator/freezer: I will have to either purchase ice by the bag and keep it in a container in my freezer to keep it from melting and leaking out the dispenser door OR purchase another refrigerator for $1500-$1800 to replace a refrigerator that is 2 years old. Regarding the washer and dryer I missed three days of work for scheduled appointments for repair/service.

We purchased a sears Kenmore ELITE trio in late November 06, not a cheap unit by any means. In April 08, 5 months after the 1 year warranty ran out (we declined the $500.00 extended warranty because the last fridge lasted over 25 years without any problems) , upon opening the door a blast of HOT air hit us in the face. Strange, considering this is a refrigerator not an oven. The light unit and the plastic ceiling surrounding it was all melted, the food on the top shelf was ruined, and the bulbs were so hot I needed an oven mitt to remove them. I called the sears 800 number to schedule service and the first thing the service rep told me was that the 1 year warranty had run out and that it would cost me $65.00 just to have a serviceman come to the house and if I decided to have repairs made the 65 would be absorbed in the total cost. It would be a couple of weeks before a tech could arrive and it would be anytime between the hours of 8a.m. and 5p.m.

Well while waiting for the big day to arrive I had time to do a little investigating and found out that a circuit board that controls the lights might be faulty and that if I just unplugged the fridge for five minutes or so the board would reset itself , so I did and guess what, the light went when the doors were closed. Problem solved and I cancelled the service call. Okay now its June and one morning I open the fridge and wham, another blast of HOT air. This time the lighting unit is hanging by the wires, the plastic surrounding it looks like the inside of a cave, the sockets are scorched brown and again everything on the top shelf is ruined. Push in the switches and the lights stay on so back on the phone with the friendly sears service rep. A service tech could be here in a week any time between 8 and 5. So at 5:30 on the scheduled day we get a call from the tech saying he would be here shortly, must be a very busy man.

So he arrives , reminds me of the $65.00 just for showing up fee(even though I had just waited all day long and he shows up a half hour later than promised), opens the fridge door and tells me Yeah every things melted, its a the circuit board. So he gets on his lap-top and after a few minutes says he has bad news. Your warranty is up and its going to cost me over $500.00 for a new board and labor. wearing out only 18 months is a little absurd. Seems expensive sears Kenmore ELITE fridges are being constructed with pretty cheap parts. So I decline the repairs, who needs a light in a refrigerator any how, pay the $65.00 just to show up and tell me what I all ready knew fee and call sears.

Of course its after six oclock in the p.m. now and what sears manager is still in his office. So Ill wait till Monday to see if I can get some satisfaction in solving the problem. Now Ive purchased a number of sears products through the years , appliances, TVs, tools, shop-vacs etc. but I will never set foot in another sears store, and neither will anyone I know, if I have to pay over $500.00 to repair a 18 month old refrigerator.

the heat from the 2 light bulbs being on for hours ruined approximately $100.00 worth of food, paid a lot of money for a refrigerator only to have it go bad after only 18 months and to have sears want that much to repair what seems to be a known defective part

Purchased brand new Kemore Elite Side-by-Side refrigerator in 2001 (along with service contracts). Within 6 months the cooling system was not working; freezer food was thawing & refrigerator side foods, such as butter, was softening. Tech came out and said the freezer was over packed with food which interfered with circulation (the cold air from the freezer side of the frige circulates into the refrigerator side). Food was rearranged but the problem continued. Second repair call was made (for the problem.) Tech came out again & replaced a part in the freezer electronic board (while bad-mouthing the other medhanics).

Several months later - same problem with temperature. Third call was placed to Sears. Tech came out & replaced the whole electronic mother board at a cost of $400.00. I refused to pay & he took out the new piece & put the old one back in. After several phone calls to Sears & all of the chains of command the refrigerator was replaced in 2003. So, I had it for 2 years.

Now, 5 years later, the compressor is shot. When my husband called the Sears service dept. they transferred him to some other country, to a person who had difficulty speaking English, let alone understanding English, and they wanted to sell my husband a service contract. Needless to say, I am not buying a service contract. I am buying a new frige but it won't be from Sears & it won't be a Kenmore.

Economic damages: The cost of service contracts that don't cover parts, service calls (generally it's $100.00 for the guy to come out); lost time from my job-someone has to be home when the tech comes out; food spoilage (the meager amount sears gives does not cover half the actual cost of food); Lost confidence in Sears & any products they sell. Believe me, I never refer people to sears.

We purchased Kenmore Elite TRIO Refrigerator six months ago. We called for service because all of our food in the freezer compartment have thawed out. The service man came and and determined that the refrigerator has a freon leak and stated that it will get worse and that the refrigerator part will soon warm up als. He said but the food is not ruined yet and cannot authorize a replacement for it. I told him it has been thawed out for over 5 days now and he said it is very good meat and that he can not say its ruined. I told him my husband and I are in our 60's what are we suppose to do with all this food. Surely after being thawed more then 5 days the food is not safe to eat. There is just 2 of us here and we can not possibly hurry up and eat all that food let alone trust it after it has been thawed out for so long.

Well now we have a freezer full of food that is going bad and now look forward to the refrigerator food going bad also and they won't replace the food because the service man feels he would take the chance and eat it. Furthermore, we paid over $3,000 for this refrigerator less then 6 months ago and it should not be defecting already. I would like for sears to replace the entire refrigerator.
