Choice Home Warranty coverage and plans

Choice Home Warranty has two main coverage options: the Basic and Total plans. Coverage usually starts 30 days after you sign up unless you show proof of previous coverage without a break. Plans last for one year.

You can customize your plan with a variety of add-on options. These include coverage for swimming pools, spas, well pumps, septic systems, and extra appliances or features that aren't in the base plans. This flexibility lets you build a plan that fits your home's unique needs. For example, you can add pool coverage if you have a pool, or extra refrigeration units if you have more than one fridge.

Customizing your plan means you only pay for the coverage you need. It's especially helpful if you have an older home or special systems, since you can cover items that might break more often.

Add-on coverage

The following optional coverages are available:

  • Pool and spa

  • Central vacuum

  • Second refrigerator

  • Well pump

  • Limited roof leak

  • Stand-alone freezer

  • Sump pump

  • Septic system

  • Septic tank pumping

Choice Home Warranty cost

Choice Home Warranty prices range $49.17 to $57.50 per month. Your exact home warranty cost will vary depending on your location and the features of your home. The average home warranty plan costs about $67 per month, placing Choice Home Warranty in the lower to middle range of the market.

Anecdotally, Dwayne in Maryland said he pays $800 per year for his Choice Home Warranty plan.

Most plans have a flat $75 or $100 service call fee per claim. A service call fee is like a deductible. You pay it to the service provider who comes to your home. If the cost of a repair or replacement exceeds the coverage limit, the customer is responsible for paying the difference.

Choice Home Warranty coverage exclusions and limits

Appliances and all systems, including air conditioners and water heaters, have coverage exclusions in most Choice Home Warranty Plans. That’s why it’s important to read the service agreement thoroughly to understand what’s covered before signing up.

Coverage exclusions

Choice Home Warranty plans won’t cover the following:

  • Known or unknown preexisting conditions
  • Routine maintenance or breakdowns due to neglect, abuse or physical damage
  • Items still under warranty by a manufacturer
  • More than one of the same appliance or system (with some exceptions)
  • Specific components and parts of certain appliances and systems
  • Permit fees
  • Other exclusions noted in the contract

Coverage limits

Choice Home Warranty has a $3,000 cap per 12-month period on most covered appliances and systems, though some systems and appliances have lower caps. Some notable exceptions are listed below.

How to file a claim with Choice Home Warranty

If you have a contract with Choice Home Warranty and need to file a claim, follow these steps to request service:

  1. Call or log in to the online account center or contact Choice Home Warranty by phone to request service as soon as you notice a problem.

  2. Service providers are contacted within four hours. Choice Home Warranty lets you know the contractor’s name and phone number and the appointment time - usually within 48 hours.

  3. A contractor arrives to determine whether your broken system or appliance needs repair or replacement. You pay the service call fee of $100.

What to expect from Choice Home Warranty’s contractor network

Choice Home Warranty ensures that its contractors prioritize communication. Contractors will clearly review with you:

  • What warranty service work is being performed

  • Estimated completion date (if not completed during first visit)

  • If additional parts, authorization or installation assistance are needed

Choice Home Warranty’s service providers guarantee the quality and materials of their work for 90 days for parts and 60 days for labor.

Real customer experiences and complaints

Overall, happy customers appreciate the responsiveness and promptness of the technicians, as well as the professionalism and knowledge they bring to the job. Most verified complaints appear to be about claims disputes, which is common among warranty companies.

  • Rose in California pays $1,100 per year of coverage plus a $75 service charge fee: “The cost for one appliance to fix was not even $200,” she wrote in a review. “So I (would have been) better off (saving) my $1,100 and just pay to fix it.”
  • Margaret in Arizona said that the claims process is fast and easy: “I filed a claim on a Monday and the appointment was the following morning. The technician was very professional, friendly, and helpful.”
  • Michael in Florida had a problem when his KitchenAid refrigerator needed to be replaced: “I purchased a new one for $3,799 and it (was) delivered and installed. Choice Warranty offered me $818 (Absurd) to replace it even though my plan had a replacement cost (up to) $3,000. I called to complain and after getting passed from one person to another I spoke to a person who said that (they) could increase the offer to $1,199, but it would have to be in the form of a Lowe’s gift card.

Still have questions?

Is Choice Home Warranty legit?

Yes, Choice Home Warranty is a legitimate home warranty company that has been in business for over 15 years. It has lower starting costs than some other home warranty companies, and it offers occasional specials, like providing the first month of coverage at no charge. Overall, we think Choice Home Warranty is worth considering.

Choice Home Warranty can be a great choice for customers who live in an area with a strong contractor network, want peace of mind on coverage for everyday breakdowns and are comfortable paying a service fee per claim.

A reviewer in Abilene, TX, described a smooth experience after an inoperative garage outlet threatened their spare freezer: the electrician "showed up as scheduled and quickly had the power restored" and "even offered safety advice." A reviewer in New Albany, OH, captured the quick claims process: "I received a prompt response. The plumber was prompt and came with a replacement disposal. It took less than an hour."

On the other hand, Choice Home Warranty may not be a great fit for homeowners with aging or complex systems who expect full replacement coverage, those in areas where contractor dispatch is slow, or anyone who needs a complex claim resolved quickly under time pressure.

The gap between that expectation and reality generates the bulk of the one-star reviews. A reviewer in Hanover Park, IL, described being charged $1,400 in uncovered "parts" during an AC replacement, with neither the warranty company nor the technician explaining the line items, and later learned the installed unit was the wrong size for the home.

We renew with Choice Home Warranty every six years, and this was our third six-year term. When we renewed, they asked if we had another house. And we do have one about a mile away where my handicapped daughter lives. They said they could work out something for that too. I asked my husband and he said if anything happened, it would be hard for her to replace something on her own. So, we looked at what Choice had to offer and it was a good deal, and we took it. I've been with them for 13 years and the experience was okay until the last part of the 12th year.

When they called me to renew, I declined about three times. I told the rep not to call me back and that I'm not interested. My microwave and dryer went out, and my understanding was that they would either fix it or replace it. And I had trouble because they didn't want to give me enough money to buy another one of equal value. The money was lower. The rep said they’ve changed management and somebody else has taken over. He would send me all the paperwork, so I can see all the small print. And he did. Right after the first month we were with them, my central air went out, and they sent somebody out. For some reason, he never came back. Choice then sent somebody else out, and he was a little man who had a very small business. He said that he couldn't wait 45 days for the money that Choice compensates him for his work, which is their policy.

The third man that Choice sent out was awesome. Every time I have something, I hope it's him who comes. He did all the work. My husband told him that if he couldn’t take the hit, there’s no sense in wasting his time. He said that he was a larger business, and he could take the hit. So, it was good. But I didn't realize that central air and heat are very expensive. Our unit was 24 years old, and it is doing good. But Choice only allowed $3,000 for the central air and heat unit. It was in the documentation when I went back and read it. So, my husband said we would just pay the rest of it and get it done. Choice Home Warranty has a deal with companies like Rheem and Carrier, and buys the equipment instead of you doing it, or the person who's going to put it in buys it. They get it at a discount. So, it's better for you and for Choice Home Warranty. So, that was good.

My daughter wasn't in her house, so we went down there to check something. The air is out, and it's 28 years old. We have a service contract with a local company that just services the air and they don't replace it. So, I requested from Choice the same guy who helped me. When he came, he said they're not going to replace this because the man who came in January and checked the heating left the screws out of the cage where the fan is. And when I turned it on the other day, it vibrated. The screws went down in there, busted the blades, and cut the coils. So, that was on us. We called the company that did the servicing and asked them to come out and look at it. They said it was on them and they were going to fix it, but they haven't fixed it yet. And it's been a couple of weeks. But they claim they're coming on Wednesday, so we'll see.

The servicemen came out, but brought the wrong kind of central air unit. They don't have to replace the central heat because there's nothing wrong with it. The one in the house is R-22, which takes 100 pounds of low-pressure, with a max pressure of 150. And now the ones are 350 to 400. So, if you put the outside unit with that much pressure into a low-pressure system, it's gonna blow up. And my husband told the guy that he can't do that. So, the guy called the home office, and they said to do it anyway. But my husband said no. The serviceman said it was up to my husband. And he said that it’s on him if he allows the serviceman to do that. If the serviceman does it and it blows up, it's on him. So, he called the office. They were supposed to come today at 10 o'clock, but they didn't come. So, they've rescheduled it for Wednesday and we’ll see what happens. But they've come out so many times and fiddle-faddle.

Everybody is busy right now and I understand, but if they do not come on Wednesday, Choice should compensate us and we have to buy a new system. It was 28 years old, but it might have lasted another 10 years. My washing machine lasted 32 years, and my dryer about 28. But it is what it is, and we'll deal with it as it comes. I appreciate the serviceman, though, and we’re waiting. I was very upset with the first two people that Choice sent out here. I don't know how they do their system or how they choose the people. The guy ghosted us, and the other guy couldn't do what he needed to do. It cost us several weeks to even get it fixed, because then Choice Home Warranty had to order it, and then it had to go to the serviceman, and then he had to come. But it worked out and they did their part.

I liked Choice Home Warranty's price so I switched over. I was with American Home Shield for close to 15 years at my home in Whittier. However, last year and a half my rate started doubling, and my deductible was way high. AHS said, "We have to pay our providers." I understood that. You don't want to be cheap and get cheap labor. You're gonna get what you pay for. But I didn't see a ceiling. It started to look more like it wasn't a partnership anymore. They would just get theirs and that was it. I turned to Choice again because I have done business with them and they would lock me into a two-year contract on my current rate. Dropped significantly from AHS, which would be 120 a month plus the deductible would go down to 69, and the deductible is only 100. It was a risky move, but a no-brainer.

CHW has been quick, timely, and responsive. Repairs that I needed to get done have been done. Especially with this last one, which was the water heater. It was on a holiday weekend. CHW was responsive, they communicated, no questions asked. The contractor came out quickly. "Okay, we're changing the water heater and here's your deductible," and that was it.

I had to put a claim in with my homeowner's insurance because of the damage, and I'm in a waiting pattern until they finish reconstructing the stand for the water heater. They will come back and finish that. The providers CHW has been use are good. They tell you what's going on, and give you suggestions. You never feel like they're working you to do more than what's required. They give you options and they list everything. I've had to use them for my dryer on three occasions this year. When they fix something, they don't have to come back. It's an older dryer and things are going to go out. They're not ready to replace it, but they fixed it. And the times that they fixed the issue, they didn't have to come back for that reason.

I gave them five stars so you can read this. This is a scam. This company is the biggest scammer in Arizona. Avoid them in every way you can if you want to save your money. After 9 months of sending me flyers in the mail and then getting my email address, they embalmed me with all their offers. After reading, I decided to go ahead and protect my washer and dryer, refrigerator, microwave, air conditioner, ductwork, plumbing, electrical.

All this crap was a lie. After taking my money and getting too much free on my third month, after they took their $43 from my banking account direct deposit, I had an issue with my air conditioner. They sent out a technician. I paid $85 to get them out here and then I paid him $85 when he got here. Then they got the $43. On the same day the technician didn't even go under the mobile home, didn't do nothing, just with his camera, took a couple of pictures and said "Your ductwork looks like a collapsed that's why there's no air coming into your house." I said ,"Are you going to go in there, are you going to look?" "Nope."

Next day, I get, "Sorry, we are not covering your issue." The whole thing is a scam from the truck with the sticker that says home choice on it, it's just a magnet. I noticed it to the technician that's wearing the patch, then he offered to give me his business card. He said, "If they don't follow up and do this, call me, I'll come and fix it for $1,200 to 1500." Scam, scam, scam. Avoid them in every way you can. I have never ever had a home warranty company. I have warranties from Home Depot on my washer, my dryer and my refrigerator, my stove. I don't know what made me do this, but I know how it feels now to get scammed, so please avoid them in every way you can, if you want to lose your money, if you don't call them and give them your hard-earned money.

I had a home warranty and when I saw Choice through the internet, they offered the same thing that I had but it was a little bit cheaper back then. So, I switched to them and I have them for a while now. Everything is online when a submitting a claim with them. You can call, but the online process is pretty self-explanatory, so it's not bad at all. I have the app on my phone, but I can go to the website. Once you put your claim in, you get your number and you get your updates after they reach out to a specific vendor who ended up getting the claim. Then they let you know what day they would come.

My last experience was with my HVAC. It went out and at the time, it was cold. I'm sure they were just busy, but I couldn't get anybody out for almost a week. I thought I could get one within 24 to 48 hours, but it was almost five days before someone could come out to see what was going on with my unit. Then, I had an issue with it again about a month later but Choice said it had been a few weeks and that it was a separate issue. I get what they were saying, but to me, it was still an HVAC issue. In the end, I had to create a new claim for that.

Other than that, the technician that came, once they got awarded the work, was a great. He knew his HVAC and had troubleshooting techniques and skills. All in all, the claim process was fairly good. Choice seems to be a pretty good warranty company to have and I haven't had too many incidents where they wouldn't cover something. With the HVAC, I had to come out of pocket with the material because they said that wasn't covered. But for the most part, I can say I'm fairly pleased with them so far.

I'm satisfied with Choice Home Warranty. I found out about it through my sister-in-law who shared with me that she has a policy here in Maryland. In her summer home in South Carolina, she had another policy. Then, two of my brother-in-laws who are in Georgia and South Carolina also have Choice warranties. So, I figured it must be a pretty decent company. Everybody in the family seemed to have been getting these warranties. My last contract with Choice, which will be coming to an end, is in September. My husband and I are debating right now as to whether we're going to pick up another contract with Choice only because there are other companies out there that we've been made aware of.

When I first started with Choice, I was satisfied with calling them and getting service that way. Now, I'm referred to the website. Then, the company that I'm assigned to is a little slow in contacting me, then I'm a little antsy. I want this thing taken care of and I have to wait for somebody to call me back and schedule me, and then I'm scheduled a week later. I don't like that. That takes too long. If I have an issue, I want it taken care of.

Another thing that we definitely do not like about Choice is that we had a claim for my refrigerator and it took a week for somebody to come. Once they came, they said that they could do the repair, and then I later found out they cannot do the repair. So I had called Samsung, the manufacturer, and they sent somebody out free of charge.

They determined that they didn't make the machine anymore. I went for months trying to get that situation taken care of. If they send a repair person out, then the repair person has to then call Choice to find out if Choice is going to honor the repair. That's insane. I paid for the service. I expect when I call, you send somebody out quickly and get it taken care of. That's my biggest complaint with Choice. It seems a bit of a hassle in trying to get my repair taken care of quickly for the time frame. However, I would still recommend Choice. I like Choice. The plan that we have covers everything. So, I'm satisfied with that. At least I have not come up with something that they have told me they're not going to cover.

I am extremely frustrated with choice right now. And am starting to look for a more reliable company. We needed an electrician to check our kitchen outlets because we think we have a short in half of the kitchen. YOU cancelled the service call. My husband missed a day of work because of it. From what I’ve read in the contract, outlets are covered. All we got was an Email with no explanation except we could file a claim if we didn’t think it was warranted. Of which we did.

A few days before a plumber came out because of downstairs shower head pipe had a leak and the toilet upstairs needed a new ball in the tank. You refused to let the plumber put in the shower head, of which we paid out of pocket. Never any explanation again from you. Thank heavens the toilet was repaired. And the serviceman was beyond kind. Was the reason because there was 2 request? I let it be known when I placed the request. Unfortunately it was AI I assume and not a real person. So at the moment I’m beyond livid. And annoyed we pay our monthly fee but I really question what we’re receiving in return.
