The plumber who came out to service the hot water heater was incompetent. His diagnosis was excessive sediment build up which is not under warranty. An independent plumber determined after testing elements and thermostat (both good) that the issue was the circuit breaker. Replaced and works fine. The AC blower motor was determined to be bad, but tech couldn't access the unit to remove the squirrel cage. The solution was simply to cut a hole in the sheetrock to access the unit. I understand that Choice is not responsible for wall repair, but denial of claim was unreasonable. If this is the standard way claims are handled, we don't need the policy.

The only reason I rated CHW with 3 stars is the length of time it took them to get a technician out to service our electrical issue and the hours that were scheduled. We called on Friday and it was over 10 days before we saw a technician. The hours we're to be serviced was anywhere from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Of course the technician showed up around 7:30 pm. Problem is we are raising two 2 year old twins grandchildren who were in bed at that time. The technician was great!!!

Very pleased with setting up a policy with Alan. He communicated all of my options and notified me of savings for senior citizens. Service was quick and options were clearly stated!

My refrigerator is malfunctioning (sensor, fan, etc.) and I was able to report this directly by phone, the process was initiated immediately, and a repair tech was sent within a few days. Unfortunately, the repair parts must come from S. Korea so it remains to be seen how soon the actual repairs can be made, but that is no reflection on Choice.

It was a very simple issue (breaker on the water heater tripped) and he showed me what the issue was and how to reset the tripped breaker if it ever happens again. Very nice experience.

Repairman Robert Mierke arrived at the time stated. Found a problem, adjusted the pully, checked the rest of the washer, heard more sounds. I'm happy with the promptness of the technician, but I'm unhappy with your settlement amounts. The amounts you allow for replacement cost are terrible. When you sent me a check for a new dishwasher a while back for 180.00 you failed to tell me where I could buy one for anything close to that.. Now you're sending me a check for 700.00 bucks for a replacement wall oven that cost 1349.00. Needless to say I'm not happy. Please explain how you justify this. You must be getting you replacement figures from a 3rd world country.

The sales rep misled us on what was covered. I was told that that they would pay a maximum of $15,000 per year, but see that the maximum for things such as a refrigerator or air conditioner, in fact every appliance is $1,500. It also shows they don’t cover certain brands of dishwasher such as Bosch and we have a Bosch Dishwasher. Now that Dishwasher is one year old with a four year warranty so it’s not going to need coverage for awhile but still that’s wrong. Also you don’t cover ice makers, nor many components on a refrigerator and washers and dryers, and unknown pre-existing conditions.... How are we supposed to know what’s an unknown pre-existing condition. It appears that you really don’t cover much of anything.
Not only that but I sent a request in writing to cancel service within a few hours of receiving the contract agreement and still have not received confirmation of cancelation. I called and asked to speak to someone about ensuring that my service was canceled and they hung up on me. I called again and they assured me they received the request for cancelation. Would send an email confirmation but they did not. I called again and still they have not. When I was ordering the service I had a lot of questions that would have prevented this problem but the sales rep kept rushing me and didn’t want to answer questions. I called the sales rep back when I discovered the discrepancies but no one would speak to me and kept disconnecting my call or would send it to voicemail. It appears you are a dishonest bait and switch company. I wouldn’t recommend you to my worst enemy.

On 11 Jan 2020 Choice Home Warranty was notified my heater stopped working and that I was running emergency heat (normal furnace mode). On the 12th They assigned C&D to come out. C&D Cancelled immediately stating they never accepted the bid because I am over 2 hours away. On the 13th Apex Mechanical was assigned and came out that same day. Apex determined the compressor failed internally. The voltage was checked. It was good. The system was checked for acid. None present. Technician stated the compressors usually last 13-15 years but there are ones that just fail early. The Apex Technician went back to his shop to call Choice Home Warranty and notify them of the findings.
While the technician was on the phone with Choice Home Warranty explaining of the internal failure, he received a email stating the claim was denied. He wasn't even done talking to them. The Technician called me up and let me know the claim was denied and he didn't know why or even how they could deny it. I soon received an email stating the claim was denied because the compressor failed due to non-normal wear and tear. I called Choice Home Warranty to ask what non-normal wear and tear is and all they could say was the compressor failed before its normal life expectancy of 12 years. (it was just under 5 years old.) So I asked, "The manufacturer warranty was for 1 year and you wont cover it till it is 12 years old?" And all they could say was it failed before it was 12 years old so it failed due to non-normal wear and tear.
I asked again what would be considered non-normal wear and tear and all that was said was it failed before it was 12 years old but I can appeal the findings. I took a few days before I wrote my appeal. I talked to the technician, did some research and found many internet pages (a lot on HVAC tech question and answer forums), a lot of questions about compressors failing before 10 years, before 5 years, even 1 year and found one where the brand new system (new construction) wasn't even 90 days old. I understand the ones under a year are manufactures warranty issues, but not everything over a year old has a warranty.
The best warranty from a manufacturer is only 10 years on the compressor which is still under the 12 years Choice talks about. Most are just 5 years. So I did my appeal, sent it in with some hyperlinks to the sites that back up my claim of compressors can fail under normal conditions in under 12 years. Explained the technician stated there were no obvious signs of non-normal wear and tear, as in dents or damage to the outside unit and nothing close to the unit to cause it to run hot. He also identified there was no acid in the system so no pipes were brazed together without neutral nitrogen gas being ran through the system and where the technician they hired said the compressor just failed internally. I informed them that I have the system serviced 2 times a year as required by their contract but I had been doing that since I bought the house and that was before I bought the home warranty through Choice.
I received an email from the claims manager on 20 Jan. I called her that afternoon and left a message, called her again on the 23rd and followed it up with a email. She called me up, said she "reviewed my claim" and said "since the compressor failed due to non-normal wear and tear the claim was denied". I asked what is non-normal wear and tear and she said it failed before it was 12 years old. I said, "No, that is a presumption. Since the compressor is hermetically sealed you are guess it based off your company's expectation that the average compressor will last 12 years. There was only a 1 year warranty on this compressor and if you do not cover a compressor till it is 12 years old there is 11 years I could pay for a home warranty that states it covers the compressor (with no caveat to the age of the compressor)."
She put me on hold and said she was going to review my contract. I told her to contact Apex and talk to the technician to get clarification and she stated she would not do that. She came back and little later said the claim is denied and referenced paragraph A-2 of my contract which states the equipment will be repaired or replace at their cost if the equipment "becomes inoperative due to normal wear and tear" (picture included) but she could send me $200 to help out. I asked where it states in the contract that certain parts are only covered if they meet an estimated age requirement. She only stated it failed due to non-normal wear and tear.
I had the Technician called Choice Home Warranty again to explain there were no open findings, no damage to the compressor or outside unit, no acid, no voltage issues, that the compressor just failed and that you don't know why it failed because you cant take it apart without ruining it anyway. The Choice representative that Apex talked to said he would take the information, send it up. It has been two weeks and no return calls or emails.

Tony is the best contractor I've done new business with in the past 5 yrs. He was competent, informative, professional, loads of personality while efficient and kind. Paying for repairs is one of my less favorite things to do. But yesterday I did it with a smile. I will request this company and service person whenever I require plumbing services in the future. I have questioned many times over the years as to why it's so hard to find competent plumbers and handymen. Two fields where there are too few experts. Whenever my money leaves the comfort of my pockets, the experience should accompany a smile on my face and/or in my heart. Mission accomplished. Thank you Tony!

Our furnace isn’t working. Had 4 company’s come out. 2 very shady said companies (no website or valid numbers). Had to find a company on my own because the other two never showed. I had to pay the company that came out to repair and Choice said they would reimburse me. After the repair I paid the company (316.00), Choice said they would get back with me in 2 hours. They denied my claim stating that it maintenance issue. I have a maintenance plan where the company comes out twice a year. My company that provide maintenance stated that this is above and beyond normal maintenance.
Two weeks later again the furnace turns on intermittently, they sent a company out to check again. Very reputable company this time. He said that two components of the furnace needed to be replaced, gas pressure was not allowing enough gas through to keep the burners all the way on. He called them to give a diagnosis and he was declined, stating my plan was insufficient. They stated again that I hadn’t had proper maintenance on the furnace. So don’t ever plan on them repairing anything in your house. It’s like throwing 800 down the drain. They will always hide behind said maintenance (even though I have a maintenance plan).

I started experiencing a problem with the LCD touch pad on my double wall oven. I put a claim in online because the oven wouldn't not turn on. The service company scheduled a call about 4 business days from the claim. When the service call came out they said the part they needed was no longer available. I later got an email that the oven would be replaced and they were going to give me 599.00 to replace my double wall electric oven. When I denied that offer online they gave me a claims contact. She said they do not replace appliances, only can give me money for an oven they could buy at cost. Her new offer was 700.
I called GE to see if the part was still available, which is was and told the claims agent. After the service company apologized about the part being available they told the claims agent it would cost 1200 to replace the part. When I called the claims agent back she said they would not repair my unit and were still sticking with giving 700. This is a GE profile stainless double oven which runs between 3-3500K.
Do not use this company. They do not care about their customers or their reputation. After I selected them to cover my home I received 6 more calls asking if I was interested in their home warranty. They run the company with a lot of marketing and telemarketing to get a higher volume of customers in and run with a horrific service/claims department.
We regret to hear your frustration. We would like the opportunity to provide you with a satisfactory resolution for you. In efforts to assist, our Consumer Advocate will message you directly to further address your concerns.

1. How did you “determine” the condenser coil had a refrigerant leak?
a. From a photograph? Anything else?
2. I suggest you consider these FACTS:
a. Your contractor made NO REFERENCE to any concerns about corrosion or a refrigerant leak in their inspection report – NONE.
b. My electric power bill had a huge increase in December, January and February that clearly shows that my heat pump failed in early November and I ran on expensive emergency(backup) electric heat strip for heating in those months, very clear.
c. Your contractor confirmed that there was refrigerant in the system 2 ½ months after it failed – he said it was a “little low”.
d. My maintenance contractor confirmed there was refrigerant in the system also when I paid extra to have them come and give me a second opinion.
e. No refrigerant had to be added to my heat pump system during the two maintenance inspections I had in 2019. The system was old but running well as designed during both inspections.
f. Your contractor DID NOT perform any testing to look for a refrigerant leak, even though there was still some refrigerant in the system. If that had been the reason for the failure why didn’t he perform the testing and confirm it? The reason, because he didn’t perceive that was the reason for the system failure. Age was.
g. Both your contractor and my maintenance contractor stated they felt my 20 year old compressor died of old age when questioned.
h. If corrosion had caused a SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH refrigerant leak to cause the compressor to fail, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY there would have been refrigerant in the system, that was observed by both contractors, 2 ½ months later.
i. Any corrosion that was observed had NO IMPACT on the failure of the compressor.
Quite simply, there is NO WAY your argument that corrosion caused a leak that caused the compressor to fail holds water. The laws of science and physics simply would not allow it to have happened the way you argue it did. And, you base your argument on a photograph. I base my arguments on physical evidence and contractor opinions. Yes, severe enough corrosion COULD cause a violation in the integrity of refrigerant tubing or a cooling coil. HOWEVER, as the FACTS above show, the corrosion on my system you saw in your photograph(s) simply was NOT severe enough to have caused a refrigerant leak. “
Today is 3/5/20 and there has been NO RESPONSE from Choice Home Warranty. All they want to do is stonewall/ignore me until I go away. I am having a legal service I subscribe to prepare a Demand letter to go to CHW headquarters to try and get them to do what’s right. That’s not the way it should be. There is no valid excuse for the way they have handled this. A failed heating system in the dead of Winter and they could care less. DON’T USE CHOICE HOME WARRANTY BECAUSE MY EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN THAT THEY WON’T BE THERE WHEN YOU REALLY NEED THEM.
Original review: I purchased my CHW warranty on 5/19/17 and have had not any claims until I noticed my condensing unit was not coming on while I was working around it for a couple of hours when the temperature was in the upper 30's. Electric panel breaker and disconnect breaker were thrown. And wouldn't stay on when I reset them. This occurred on Friday January 31st 2020.
I called CHW at 5:15 pm and advised them of the problem. They assigned me claim ** and advised me they would be having a contractor contact me to look at the problem. Saturday February 1st I received a phone call and email advising me that a contractor would be coming out between 11 am and 3 pm. Then contractor came about noon and determined that the compressor in my heat pump had failed. He said he recommended the unit be replaced because of its age and he would submit his report and CHW would be contacting me. Monday Feb 3rd I received a call from CHW at 3:26 pm when I was not home and they left a message.
I had been checking my email Monday expecting an email from CHW since that was the primary way we had been communicating. I checked before I had to leave Monday afternoon and after I returned around 5 pm. I had no email and when I checked my phone I had no messages. Tuesday Feb 4th I checked emails again around noon with no results. However, when I checked my phone I had a new message from CHW that had been left on Monday. Unfortunately, I have had this problem before with my service where messages aren't delivered on time.
When I reviewed the message it was someone, whose name I could never determine, giving me a phone number to call that was different from the CHW contact # (888-531-5403) and the # (848-237-1400) my caller ID identified. I had to listen to the message numerous times to finally get all of the number and trying to get the agent's name.
At 11:34 am I called the CHW # (800-814-2534 **) and got a message telling me to leave a message. The agent's message was VERY hard to understand clearly. I never could understand the agent's name and she spoke very rapidly. I left my name, telephone #, claim #, date & time. I said I needed to get this resolved. (It's my heating system and it IS WINTER). It is after 1pm on Wednesday Feb 5th and I have heard NOTHING via email or telephone from CHW. I am starting to get a little upset. The failed heat pump explains why my last two electric bills have been roughly $60 more a month than typical for this time of year even though the weather hasn't been extremely bad. My heat has been being provided by my backup emergency electric strip heat.
Now, you all told me this was EXACTLY why I need a CHW home warranty and I haven't had to use it until now after having it for almost two and a half years. Now please show me you do what you say. My system has been maintained religiously and has been in great shape. I have two maintenance visits a year: one for winter/summer conversion in early Spring and one for summer/winter conversion in late Fall. The last maintenance visit was on 9/24/19 and everything was fine. PLEASE contact me and let's get this corrected. Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter. I will reserve my ratings until I see how you do. I hope they will be all 5 Stars.
I tried to give CHW a chance to review and respond to what I have written here. I used their "Contact Us" form from their website but the response space provided was not large enough for my comments here. It additionally had a space labeled "NEED HELP?" that listed email as an option but when I tried that to see if I could "attach" these comments to an email all I got was the same "Contact Us" form. I then asked them to PLEASE contact me before 5 pm Wednesday. It's now 6 pm Thursday Feb 6th and no one has contacted me yet. I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN THE LACK OF COURTESY AND PROFESSIONALISM. Unfortunately now, I guess I am going to have to get aggressive. I hate that.
In recent review of your claim, our records show that we have provided you with a satisfactory resolution, in which we are glad to report that you have accepted.

Updated on 03/20/2020: This goes way back to January when I filed a work order. Long story short, they offered a low ball offer because no parts etc were available to fix my built-in Maytag convection oven. They have NO options. Said they sent out a check on March 4th which we still have not received. I checked with them and they said check post office, which I did and they are aware of. Other option is put stop payment on it, which I would have to pay for and wait 30 days from the 4th, or wait 90 days and they would re-issue. Really??? According to the post office, the sender is responsible how they send checks out which should have been certified. Choice does not do that, surprise. According to the post office, the sender should cancel the check and pay for it since it is the sender's responsibility. Checked again today with Choice, same song and dance. Has anyone else been subjected to this???
Original Review: My oven has a mind of its own. Called in a claim Jan. 15, 2020. 1st tech said the motherboard needed to be replaced. Within a few days, Choice set up 2nd appt with same tech, I assumed to fix it. Day of appt, I get appt reminder. Tech never shows. I call the tech, he forwarded a message to me that Choice sent him. They were going to offer cash option. News to me, I never received that info from Choice.
I called Choice to find out. They said well the tech had called back and said that he could get motherboard refurbished and thought that is what was being done. Very bad lack of communication. In the conversation she did offer $470 on a $1600+ appliance. I turned that down in a heartbeat and a few choice comments were made as well, like Choice says on their website, “customers will never have to pay of pocket again “ and my favorite, “If we can not fix it, we will replace it”. Of course, there is a fine print read on another page in reference to that.
We decided to have a 2nd tech come out. Appointment was set from 11-3pm window, and he was a no show. I called Choice who called the company and Choice said, they are going to call you back in reference to the appointment. 20 minutes later, the company called and said, “We just found out that the assigned tech had car troubles and could not make his appts”. I said, "You are just now informing me, not this morning?" She said, "Like I said we just found out." Wow! Then she ask can he come this Thursday? This was on a Monday. I said, "Nope, if you are not professional enough to call and tell me the problem the morning instead of waiting until Choice had to call you, I do not want you in my house."
Called Choice back again and told them and they said I only had 2 options. One, have them come out or send out another (3rd) request to see if another company would be available. A wonderful, amazing tech did come out 2 days later which was yesterday. He checked everything! When the oven temp was suppose to be 350, it was actually 3 different temps per his special tester, all in the 400+ degrees. Also said the convection oven fan was off as well. He concluded it was the motherboard.
While at my house, he checked all his sources and had the same results as the 1st tech, they are not available any longer. He sent his report to Choice. Guess what their response was? Can it be refurbished? My take on Choice is they are going to bandaid as much as possible without actually replacing anything or giving you a very low ball offer. Deceptive advertising!!!! If they did their research, a rebuilt board put back into an oven already having issues is a major fire hazard down the road. Of course, that would be after the fact, so no responsibilities on their part. Today is February 6. We are still waiting on my oven decision. After reading several reviews, Choice has done this to more customers than you can count. No wonder, there are lawsuits pending.

Our dishwasher would not drain water. The technician came and determined that the air intake at the sink was blocked. He removed a small piece of plastic from the intake and it appeared to fix the problem. However after he left I set the dishwasher to quick cycle and the water overflowed through the air intake. I had to get under the sink to discover that he had not reassembled the air intake properly. I reinstalled the intake the way it should be. Now things work properly with no water overflow. This is the second time I have had to redo the work of a technician in order for it to be correct. My $60.00 is all it would take for a service call. This is likely all that Choice has to offer as they pay a very small portion, if any at all. for service. I am tired of having to fix what these service people fix.

Horrible company. Stay away. If I had read all the negative reviews, I never would have purchased a plan. Our 23-year old heating system was leaking carbon monoxide due to RIVETS THAT DETERIORATED IN HEAT EXCHANGER DUE TO AGE. Nothing due to rust or corrosion. Choice Home Warranty states it was because of rust and corrosion which our heating technician said it WAS NOT but Choice Warranty put it down as that. I sat right by our technician when he told them it was not due to rust and corrosion. Pictures of the heat exchanger were sent to them for review (the furnace had to be torn apart to get to the heat exchanger) which showed the holes where the rivets had deteriorated allowing leakage of carbon monoxide. The unit was shut down immediately by the technician.

Our tankless water heater stopped working on Sunday, and Sunday we put in a claim. We’ve had two technicians from two separate companies assigned to our claim, and both providers suggested replacement of the unit. Shortly thereafter, and with no communication to us, the homeowner, our claim has been reassigned. It seems like CHW is not interested in providing that service, as a replacement tankless water heater can be expensive, so they are shopping around to find a technician that will provide a more economical diagnosis than the previous two. The customer service gets chucked out the window after a certain dollar amount it seems, as the company doesn’t seem to mind that while they shop service providers, we are taking cold showers in January.

They took pictures and sent them in to the claim people. After being charged $85.00 the next day KREMER PLUMBING SERVICES LLC tells me that they will not cover a tank. So I called the warranty company and they told me that my tank was not covered. My point is both companies knew the tank was bad but still came out and charged me $85.00. I feel I was scammed by both companies. And on their website it said they cover Water Heaters, it should look like this Water Heaters*.

Choice Home Warranty is horrible. I have submitted a few claims and each has been denied. Most recently, the main board on my furnace failed. They could not get anyone to repair it, so I found a company to replace the board. Choice Home Warranty denied the claim alleging the technician said it failed due to a power surge. The appeal process is a joke. When I requested to cancel the policy, they claimed all the money I paid for the warranty and additional options were exhausted yet still have two years remaining. Save your money - I wish I did!

The issue with my stove was not covered by warranty (issue with door). I stated that the issue was the door and instead of being stopped at the time and told it wasn't covered, a technician came out and I had to pay the visit fee before being told it wasn't covered. While I am partly to blame for not checking the warranty specifically for this, I'm shocked that a company this size has nothing in their software to check as the claim is being entered by the customer. I suspect your company is working off old software or doesn't care if the customer wastes time/money.

Updated on 01/31/2020: I have been with Choice Home Warranty fo a few years. I bought my house 7 years ago. One of my claims were my dishwasher. It started making a notice. Choice sent someone out to look at it. Their technician said it was put in wrong. That dishwasher was in the house when we bought it. So choice warranty denied the claim. I called and said, "How was I to know it was put in wrong? It ran good for a good period of time." They basically said sorry. Next was a leak in the AC unit. Denied again. Final straw with them was my furnace went out. Yes there was some sort and dust but it ran the day before then next day wouldn't snap on. Denied again. So I have been paying all these years for nothing. So if your appliances are older don't use them. By the way I canceled right away. I had just paid for the month and asked for a partial refund. It was less than 5 days and they said no refunds..
Original Review: I have a older house and older appliances. Been with choice for quite a while. I called on the AC. It had a leak. They denied the claim, then the dishwasher started making noise. Made a claim. Denied because whoever put it in before I bought the house put it in wrong. My fault? No. Then my furnace- no heat. Put claim in. Denied. Because there was dust on a few parts. So you pay monthly to get denied. Would not recommend this company at all.

My microwave stopped heating. I submitted a claim, a technician came out I got a notice stating it would be more cost-effective to replace it rather than repair the microwave. I was sent an email with the claim amount (169.99). I contacted Choice a see if they could increase the amount the amount they were paying, because a built in microwave cost much more than they were offering. The person I spoke with was not understanding at all and told me I would have to deny the offer Choice had made before I could speak with anyone regarding the claim.
I was also informed the offer Choice had made (169.00) could be taken back or could be delayed altogether. I simply wanted to know if increasing their offer was possible and how they determined 169.99 was enough to help purchase a built-in microwave. The customer service repeated more than once I could cancel my claim if I had questions. His tone, in my opinion, was not caring at all. I never requested my claim be denied nor was I rude in any way. His handling of my call was not caring at all. I hope Choice will increase its claim limit on Built-in Microwaves. In my case I was out of pocket more than I thought I should be to have home warranty coverage. The cost of my microwave was 334.98. This is not a top of the line microwave.

I called them again and they responded, advising it was the seal (which is not covered) and I had to pay $100.00 out of pocket. The technician only spoke Russian, so I had to wait for the owner to call each time to get an update. The entire time, the technician was on the phone with the owner speaking in Russian...almost like they were Googling the situation. It still did not maintain its temperature, so they responded AGAIN and cleaned it....they also were supposed to order a part, however they never responded back to replace this part. Then there was water leaking, yet the fridge isn't connected to an ice maker or water source.
Sears then came out and now it isn't leaking, but after two weeks, the fridge is no longer holding a steady temperature, ranging between 38 and 48 degrees at any given time. Choice Home Warranty's customer service is not trained and can only do one thing...enter the claim. You explain the situation and it's well the technician will look at it. After countless visits, they still will not even discuss replacing it, however I am out over $200.00 of my own money and 3 different times had to throw away groceries after just replacing them because it wasn't fixed.
