Canary is not compatible with Ring. Homeowners must use Canary products.

Still have questions?

Is Canary a good security system?

Canary is a very basic security system that focuses entirely on video and audio. It’s missing many of the devices you see in other home security systems, such as window and door sensors, glass break sensors and more. The company may be a good choice for those who want a very basic system. Otherwise, you might want to consider a more comprehensive security system before choosing Canary.

I have been a loyal Canary customer since 2016 and currently own four Canary cameras that are now about 10 years old. On June 26, 2026, I received a notification that my annual subscription had renewed for **$521.48**. In my opinion, this price is excessive and far above what many competing home security camera services charge.

The same day I contacted Canary Support to cancel my subscription and requested a refund, as I had acted immediately after the renewal. Their initial response instructed me to cancel the subscription online, which I did. After completing the cancellation, I received another email stating that my subscription would remain active until **June 26, 2027**, and that no refund would be issued.

After numerous emails back and forth, I was finally able to speak with a manager named Matt. He explained that Canary's current Terms & Conditions require customers to cancel before the renewal date in order to avoid being charged. During our conversation, Matt also acknowledged that the company's Terms & Conditions have changed over the years. When I asked Canary to provide the specific Terms & Conditions that I agreed to when I became a customer, or even the version that was in effect before this renewal, they were unable to do so. Instead, they only provided a link to the current Terms & Conditions.

My disappointment isn't simply about the cost. It's about the way long-time customers are treated. After supporting Canary for nearly a decade, I expected better customer service and a reasonable accommodation for a same-day cancellation request. Instead, I was met with rigid policy enforcement and an inability to provide the agreement they claim governs my subscription. Unfortunately, this experience has completely eroded my trust in Canary. I can no longer recommend their products or subscription service, especially given the pricing, customer service experience, and lack of transparency regarding the contractual terms they rely upon.

Wish I would have read some of these reviews previously. Canary has Horrible customer experience similar or identical to others with bad reviews. I got charged an amount that was much more than I expected on the day of the renewal. I immediately contacted support via chat to cancel my service and ask for a refund. Customer service only would tell me over and over again that the terms of service say that I cannot cancel until the next billing which is a year from that date. They said they could not issue a refund even though it had only been hours since the renewal took effect and was charged. They told me had I reached out about my concern the day before they would have offered me a substantial discount of 60%. They have a policy for new customers that they can cancel for a refund within 14 days (in the fine print it says not for renewals).

I asked, they denied, I asked again, they denied using the same standard answer. I don’t even know if I was chatting with a person or a bot. They emailed me a denial and I replied and still only received the same “we cannot process a refund for you based on our terms and conditions”. Again they just keep repeating the same denial reasons saying we reconsidered your request but denied it for the same reason. I am still unsure if there was an actual person on the other end of the email. I am very unhappy with their customer service and feel that, especially now there are many more companies and products that offer the same service for better prices and better customer service.

Canary has very bad billing practices. They send an email to remind you that your subscription is coming due. What they do not tell you is the cost of that renewal. In my case, it was over $400 USD. Then, after they take the automated payment, if you want to change your plan or cancel, you get the "Sorry, we have your money, and we don't care anymore, see you next year." Customer service is prompt and consistent to tell you it's your fault for not checking your account for changes.

I used Canary for about 8 years. Video quality wasn't great. Video clips were short and missed important moments completely. My experience at renewal was awful. I did not receive any notice of the upcoming renewal—whether it was never sent or went to junk, I don’t know. As soon as I noticed the charge, within a couple of days, I contacted Canary, canceled the service, and requested a refund. They could clearly see that I had not used the service for months.

Despite this, customer support refused to work with me on a refund and the communication I received was poor and came across as rude. In 8 years, this was the only time I ever contacted customer support, and it was a very disappointing experience. As a result, I will not return to Canary when I set my cameras back up. Long-term customers should be treated better, especially in situations like this.

Canary is now a rip-off! I ended a 7 year use of this system, a few years too late. The final straw was having my credit card charged over $400, for 3 cameras I use, when last year the fee was half of that. I was charged for 2 cameras that are not in use...haven't been in years. There is no account information online, no invoices, or clear pricing emails. The credit card is just charged an amount, and customer service refused to refund anything, because I cancelled on Monday Dec 29, for billing on Thursday Dec 25th (Christmas Day). There is no phone number to call on the website.

The quality of the service has degraded to USELESS. The videos are too short, and regularly fail to capture basic threats like a person on the doorstep. Night images/capture does not function, though the camera captures at least dozens of falling rain or snow images each night, shadows by day, or moving trees. Cameras that are not kept in service will degrade the battery, so the device is not repairable. We had two of the indoor cameras, four of the outdoor cameras, and are down to only three outdoor cameras now. They also often go offline, regardless of house power and internet being strong. Don't waste your money!

I purchased my 1st Canary in 2015, back when cloud storage was unlimited and free, and they monitored air quality. They eventually did away with the unlimited cloud storage, went to a subscription model, and completely removed air quality monitoring. Over the years, videos got shorter, time that you could go back reduced, and got divided by the number of cameras you had. More features get moved to subscription, fees go up every year, and not by incremental amounts.

In 2025 Canary increased their premium subscription by 25%, from $149.99 for one camera to $199.99 plus tax. Their cancellation policy is, what some would consider, predatory. I didn't receive the renewal email listing the price increase (though they claim I did), and they have a very stringent cancellation policy that they will not bend on (under and circumstances from what I gather.) It's as follows: "Any cancellation after the first fourteen days of initial registration will be effective at the end of the then-current annual billing period and no credits or refunds will be issued." I've been told that the payment department is who handles escalations and has the final say. As the product itself is subpar compared to competitors like Ring and Lorex, and the customer service is far from being customer friendly, I could not recommend this product in the slightest. I would give negative stars if possible.

We’ve had this camera for a couple of years. Not great quality but I could see what was going on. But what turned me against them was that with the last update, you can now only watch 30 seconds of feed before you are interrupted with a huge ad wanting you to upgrade to their premium service. The clock starts running as soon as you hit watch live and by the time you can turn the phone sideways to watch full screen and zoom in, you only have a few seconds before you are hit with another ad to upgrade. It has rendered the camera completely useless. I don’t capitulate to shady business tactics, so I will be purchasing a different camera from a different company as soon as I get home from the trip I’m on.

Canary customer service, clearly staffed by foreigners reading a script, stubbornly refused to replace it. Instead, they were willing to sell me a new one at 50% off the full sticker price, which was what I paid to begin with. It seems their scam is to make a poor quality device and sell a second one when the first one breaks (rinse and repeat). I shouldn't have to pay twice for one device. Also, they spammed me constantly trying to sell me their premium service. The camera (when it worked) was of some limited value without the premium service, hence the two stars instead of one, as you can view in real-time (using mobile device only, not PC) and it saved motion clips of 3 seconds up to one day.

I will never recommend them and will do everything I can to make it known to not purchase their products.

It is very difficult to reach a service agent, my issue has repetitively been ignored and when I asked for my subscription to be canceled and refunded only a day after it was automatically renewed, I was denied. The cost of this service has risen significantly since I first signed up and the reliability of the service has dangerously diminished. I am very unhappy with the service and can't wait until this years subscription is over so I can switch over to a service that actually works.

This service never works when I need it to. Just this past week alone, I had outages at two crucial times. One evening we had people walking down our block stealing catalytic converters and trying door handles on cars. All of my neighbors were abuzz as they all caught them on their security cameras (none of them using Canary). As I have experienced countless times before, I had no videos at all from that time period even though my neighbors across the street have video of someone in my driveway, just feet from my camera. Any time I've been able to contact a customer service agent, which is rare, all they can suggest I do is delete the app and reinstall it. In this particular case, once I deleted the app and reinstalled it, there were more videos than I was able to see prior to the reinstallation, but still none within the 3 hours the thugs were walking and driving down my block and walking up and down my driveway.

A second occurrence just this past week; as I pulled up to my house I noticed a suspicious vehicle sitting directly in front, broad daylight, within clear view of TWO Canary cameras which mind you I keep plugged in to ensure the batteries do not die. As soon as I pulled up the suspicious vehicle drove off. I was able to note the make, model and license plate of the vehicle but as usual, the cameras did not work. I only got a video of them driving off as I pulled up behind them. I have no idea what time the vehicle got there or how long it was there as the service failed me, yet again. For all I know, they were walking around on my front lawn looking through my windows.

This service is simply unreliable. They should not be charging people what they charge. It's an absolute rip off, maybe even a breach of contract as they are selling a level of security monitoring that I can prove they can not provide. And the fact that my service was not canceled and my money refunded when requested, is unreasonable. It makes me think that this company has little to no faith in their own service and that they are reliant on their policy of not canceling subscriptions after they automatically renew, to make money. I know of no other company that provides a subscription service that would not cancel and refund an unhappy customer.

This policy is inconsistent with industry norms. I have no idea how often the service blacks out. There is no way for me to know when it's not working. I am so afraid, God forbid, that this service won't work when I truly need it to. Should my property ever be damaged, robbed or my home invaded, I will sue the pants off of this company.

Explained my device no longer works, however continue to charge for entire year of service when I tried to cancel a few days after auto-renewal took place. This results in a very expensive bill for a service I cannot use. DO NOT allow auto-renewal!

We have been using the Canary camera for 4 years. Initially it was the basic / free service. The camera stopped working, so for nearly a year of the 4 years it just wouldn’t work. Canary offered a new camera for a low price if we signed up for a 2-year plan at $9.99 per month. We did and the camera would go in and out periodically. If there was storm or power outage the camera would naturally lose its connection but unlike all other wifi devices in the property it would never auto reconnect to wifi. So when we're out of town it stayed disconnected until we returned. Defeating the purpose of the main reason we had the service - to record any potential break-ins while we were gone. All attempts to get help were just constant emails back and forth but never any calls or real help. They repeated the same thing to do our own trouble shooting. They never offered any real Solutions or to replace the camera.

We tried to cancel the premium service due to the constant problems and they finally called. Refused to cancel the service and held us in our 2-yr plan or we had to pay $$$. So we canceled at the end of the service or tried and they still charged another month saying that we had to cancel prior to the date of the charge. I would not recommend their cameras or their service. It was the most infuriating experience and waste of money I have had yet.

These security does not work at all. It puts your life in danger by not notifying you. Canary lies about the devices they provide. The alarm does not go off, and when it does, there is a long delay. Their system has so many bugs. If you need the videos to provide to the police, they will not be there. Women do not trust this system. Canary will put your life in danger. It put my life in danger.

Canary Merchandise - I received two security cameras as a gift a while back. **DO NOT BUY.** I have indoor and outdoor camera. Basic plan for no charge was changed to a paid plan. No longer can receive photos of objects/people movement. Only receive warning. This is almost a bait & switch scenario; where you receive service on a basic non charge plan that becomes a charge plan and functionality is taken away.
