Don’t ever buy from this company. I bought a new water heater and less than a year later it was leaking. They sent me the part but they would only give me up to 100 dollars for someone to replace the part. Not only I can’t get a licensed plumber to fix it but 100 dollars 🤷♀️I wouldn’t even think that they would walk through the door for that price. I believe I shouldn’t have to pay anything out of pocket with how much I paid for this water heater.

Two years ago, I purchased a 50 gal AO Smith electric hot water heater. (E6-50H45Dv130) Today, after few weeks of erratic water temperatures and finally cold water only, I had to replace both the top and bottom heat elements in the hot-water heater. Much to my dismay and profound disappointment, both heat elements were of poor quality and seemly a cheap version. Then I replaced the original heat elements with higher quality aftermarket heat elements, quality that I was expecting from AO Smith in the first place. I am telling everyone I know not to purchase AO Smith electric hot-water heaters, as they are pathetic, and will be a great disappointment to the new owners with an extremely short life cycle.

AO Smith's warranty policy is a shame. Had a vertex Combi unit installed. Next day I day issues with it starting up. Multiple calls to tech support. They pointed the finger at the gas company. Gas company says there’s no issue with the gas. 2 service techs later they replace the gas pump. Didn’t work. They decided it wasn’t worth them spending the money to fix it and offered a replacement. No warranty on labor. Question. How do I know the unit is defective if I don’t install it? They looked for any excuse to void the warranty. They act like they are doing me a favor by replacing the unit. Never had an experience like this in my life.

A. O. Smith misleads consumers with a worthless warranty. The electric water heater I purchased malfunctioned the very day it was installed. The repair bill was More than $500. They paid only $100. Two years later, the tank cracked and leaked. It took five phone calls to customer service to replace it. They finally said I needed to disconnect the unit, empty it, take the 100 pound unit to Lowes, who would replace it, minus the current cost. Of course, that is impossible. I ditched the defective unit and ate the $3,000 it cost for less than two years of hot water.

I bought a tankless water heater that did not work so I returned it. Bought a second one thinking, just bad luck, got a lemon but no, the second did not work either. I have made several calls and haven’t got actual help except them telling me I needed a plumber. The company is not willing to help in any way except to reimburse me $100 for a plumber's bill that would cost me $600, as I was told by a plumber. I would never recommend this product or never will I buy this brand again! I’m out over $1000 with a useless tankless water heater, plumbing, wiring and a lot of wasted time.

Hard to feel slighted by AO Smith water heater when it was installed free via a program my local electric company had about 4-5 years ago now. However the hybrid model we have after just 5 years now has a cracked tank and is a total replacement. So what was free has now become a $2300 replacement. Based on other reviews and my own experience, I would not recommend to a homeowner. Btw, the previous standard tank had been in the home for 20+ years, no issues, just consumed a bit more electricity. Please research before saying yes to this company.

I purchased an A.O. Smith water heater with the understanding that it was covered by a warranty. Recently, the unit began making extremely loud hammering noises whenever water is used, loud enough that even my townhouse neighbors can hear it. I contacted two licensed plumbers, both of whom inspected the unit. Both plumbers confirmed the problem and stated they would not continue to use or recommend A.O. Smith products due to repeated issues with performance and warranty support.
When I contacted A.O. Smith directly, I was informed that parts would need to be replaced at a cost of over $900 before they would even consider honoring the warranty. This requirement undermines the very purpose of a warranty and feels deceptive. Customers should not have to pay such high costs just to access coverage that is supposed to protect them. I am extremely dissatisfied with the product and the company’s handling of this matter. I would caution any potential buyer to carefully review the terms of the warranty before purchasing, as it may not provide the coverage you expect.

I moved into a new build three years ago and just got to replace a three-year old water heater that was leaking. There needs to be more accountability for products that cost this much. It was under warranty but labor is not included with that. And once replaced, the replacement is no longer under warranty. Isn't that shady? I went with a different brand with a different warranty. Businesses like this should be shut down - Not one ounce of care for their customers. Disappointed.

I moved into my new house with an A. O. Smith water heater. Within two months I begin having problems with loud noises when heating. Even called the fire department to make sure it wasn’t a fire risk. I called the manufacturer and was told to call a plumber in my area they recommended. Could never get the plumber to return the phone call and I am told it is the only tech in my area which is ridiculous. Then I was offered $100 to go find my own plumber and that is all they would cover towards a visit, determination of problem and labor. Which means I would end up paying for most of the repair for a brand new water heater.
So I would recommend ignoring their warranty promises. I am still waiting to get mine fixed from a plumber I have located. Also, this was purchased from Lowe’s, and unless they had an authorization from the manufacturer, which they are not willing to do, I could not even return this damaged merchandise. I would never ever purchase from this company again.

I had a water heater from a different brand that lasted 17 years without any issues. Three years ago, my contractor installed an AO Smith water heater, and unfortunately, it broke down already. While I appreciate that the unit was still under warranty and AO Smith provided a replacement, I was surprised to learn that the company does not cover the replacement costs, which came to $500. This raises a serious concern for me—if this new unit breaks again in a few years, I’ll be forced to pay another $500 out of pocket. That’s not acceptable, especially given the reliability I experienced with my previous water heater. It makes me question the quality and longevity of AO Smith products.

Buyers BEWARE!!!! AO Smith does NOT stand behind their product! We purchased a new electric water heater on 01/01/25 and had it installed. On 07/13/25 it started tripping the breaker every time the hot water in the house was turned on. My husband contacted AO Smith and was told that it sounds like the heating elements stopped working. The representative then said that AO Smith would send us a voucher for the elements, which we will have to go pick up at Lowe’s, about 45 minutes away from our home. He then advised that my husband, who is not electrician, nor plumber, replace the elements. He said if my husband does not feel comfortable doing that, we can hire a plumber to do the work and pay the plumber, but that their company (AO Smith) would only reimburse onto $100.00 for labor!
My husband escalated the call and spoke with Sean (a supervisor) who stood by the $100 labor reimbursement and called their labor warranty a “labor assistance” warranty. As a homeowner who has purchased many thousands of dollars worth of appliances over the last 23 years, we have NEVER had a company refuse to cover the labor for a product that was still under “warranty”, and cite it as a “labor assistance.” We are currently trying to work with Lowe’s where we purchased the product to see if we can use our purchased Lowe’s warranty to help with this situation. Personally, we will NEVER purchase another AO Smith appliance, and I am making sure to leave reviews wherever I can to try to ensure others do not have to experience this same stress. It is truly sad that they know they are selling poor appliances/products that even they do not stand behind! Stay far away from AO Smith water heaters.

I purchased my water heater in October 2020, and it has a 10 year warranty on parts, I think three years on labor. In June 2025, upon returning from a short trip, I could not get my module to move from vacation mode to standard mode. I made a call the next morning to the service department, and they helped walk me through pushing the buttons to reset. This did not work, they decided they needed to send me a new module. I paid for next day air as they all pay for ground shipping.
My plumber came and tried to install the new module, called for service help which they gave him. It was decided this module was a bad part. And they sent by ground shipping five days later. My plumber came back for a second service call to install the module, which worked. I had two service calls because of a bad part and was denied coverage for one service call that I requested due to their bad part. I realize labor is not part of my warranty now, but they need to guarantee Their parts. Very dissatisfied. There are exceptions to all things, and this is one of them, in my opinion, thank you

AO Smith prohibits refund or replacement of unit, despite it being 48 hrs from purchase. 1)! Customers are forced to find an “approved” plumber who will examine the new unit. 2) Customers are forced to locate and then drive to a vendor having the replacement parts in stock. 3) Customers are forced to drive back to house where defective [new] water heater to install replacement parts, hopefully repairing the problem. Paperwork is odd and not like the first receipt or the refund. Had faint propane smell from the start but I thought maybe it was normal for the brand. After 3 weeks I called propane company who found small leak at the “gas control valve/thermostat." They disconnected & capped the propane lines & red tagged the water heater on June 19, 2025.
I called AO Smith # on the water heater and they were very nice. The part would be free, including shipping. I asked about part installation. Was told the nearest tech was 50 miles from me but he would only travel 40 so I need to hire installer and they will reimburse “up to $100” IF I follow the instructions they sent me & if it’s not a licensed plumber they may not pay. What licensed plumber would do any job for $100? I paid for a new item. Was sold a broken one and I have no hot water still on 6/23/25 as I wait for part so I can hire a plumber. I immediately contacted the same plumber that evening to remove it and take it back to Lowe's for an exchange, as I had no hot water for three days already. The company representatives were very nice and informed me to submit for a plumbing refund, which they capped at $ 150.00, while the plumber charged me $ 300.00 for his own time after hours. Not only did they trick me into buying a dangerous and defective heater, but they are also refusing to pay the $ 150.00 plumber fee because it was done after hours and not during business hours with the company.
I am out $ 300 on top of $ 1000 for two heaters, dealing with no hot water for three days, and taking two days off work to resolve this, yet they want plumber verification and refuse to issue the promised refund of $150.00. 10 emails, 4 VMS, not one response. I am appalled and will report to Better Business, and selling a defective heater is considered hazardous after 6 months.

They claim a 1 year warranty on labor but only if they have one of their certified plumbers in your area. They will REIMBURSE only $100 of the labor cost which is usually in excess of $500 because repairs to this units is considered a "level 1 technical repair" with labor rates starting at $500. So the labor isn't really covered and you'll need them repeatedly. According to the plumbing company I had to pay for, they are pulling out most A.O. We have owned our home for 20 years and we have two water heaters. We had to replace the first AO Smith water heater 4 years ago, and went with the same brand because we had been very satisfied. No problems with the replacement and still working well. We just replaced our other water heater three weeks ago and it has been a NIGHTMARE. It has never heated more than ~25 gallons since installed and it is a 48 gallon tank. We paid an electrician to come and recheck everything, and both the thermostats and the heating elements are working. After confirming this, we completed a second set of checks while on the phone with the AO Smith employee "Danielle"'. We have spent half the day on hold and being passed from one person to another. Worst of all we were instructed to complete a crossover test for plumbing issues and then to call her back in one hour.
DANIELLE NEVER INSTRUCTED US TO TURN OFF THE BREAKER! Thank goodness we called the electrician back to ask advice before we did the "crossover test" as instructed, this would have definitely damaged the water heater. Now we are waiting for a supervisor to call back in ~12 hours because every person we talk to says something very different. It is such a shame that we had 20 years of good experience ruined with 1 faulty product and an entire group of AO Smith employees that are basically ignoring that we were sold a faulty product and now want us to replace the confirmed working parts instead of finding the issue. Terrible Experience with A. O. Smith Water Heater & Customer Service. I recently had an awful experience with AO Smith after my elderly parents purchased a water heater from Lowe’s on 1/29/25. When my sister called AO Smith customer service on 2/18/25 for support, she was advised to call a local plumber—who they would only reimburse $100 for—while also being required to reinstall the unit and check voltage and OHMS. Even then, AO Smith claimed it would take 6-8 weeks before they could send a service technician.
Frustrated with the lack of assistance, I decided to return the water heater to Lowe’s in McAllen (Jackson Rd). Managers Elva and Robert directed me back to the original purchase location, where I was fortunate to be assisted by outstanding customer service representatives. They helped me call AO Smith directly, where I was placed on hold for an hour by Edgar and Sergio before being transferred to a representative who refused to provide an RA#—the same response my sister Nora received on 2/18/25. This entire process was overwhelming and frustrating, especially since AO Smith refused to issue a refund or even a store credit. I was forced to take the unit back home, adding to the unnecessary stress.
A huge shoutout to Adriana and Laura at Lowe’s for their professionalism and willingness to go above and beyond. They involved a manager, explained the situation, and ultimately secured a full refund—something AO Smith failed to do. 🚨 Word of Advice: DO NOT buy AO Smith water heaters from Lowe’s! I should have checked reviews here before buying this brand. My home's first water heater lasted 22 years. The AO Smith replacement had problems after two. I finally called for support near but months before the end of my warranty period, and they sent me on a wild goose chase (multiple flushes etc) that did no good. Then they said I was out of warranty after trying to follow their suggestions (even though I called while under warranty) and they said they would not help and couldn’t do anything since they don’t sell directly to consumers. Horrible company with lousy products.

I bought a new house with two 50 gal A.O. Smith Water Heaters in Oct., 2021. By July, 2023, both water heaters had to be replaced. Both tanks were under warranty, but I had to pay the labor charge over $500 each. After 17 mos, another of the tanks had to be replaced. Again, they will not cover the labor charge even though none of the tanks have lasted more than 19 months. Either there is an issue with this model of water heater, or A.O. Upon filling it up it started to hiss at the top and water came out the top where the black ring is.... Call service. Told us to take back to lowe's... We got a credit and got another one. Brought it home and put it in place. A small dent in the side (not done by us), no other damage, installed and seems to be working. After reading the reviews I hope this last more than 5-6 years... Lots of wasted water/time/money.... Seems to be a lot of negative stuff here. Hope it lasts and no problems. Not much more to be said.

Smith Tech support, and they refuse to even discuss any of my problems because my unit was electrically installed using a heavy duty plug instead of being hard wired. This response might have been excepted if my problems was anything but a LEAKING TANK. My 12-Year Tank is obviously DEFECTIVE to already be leaking within its first year. The A.O. Smith Tech Support could not come up with any possible reason why my tank could already be leaking. This has nothing to do with electricity!!!
MY 12-YEAR TANK, expensive water heater, has a defective tank and A.O. Smith refuses to replace it. I feel foolish that I actually purchased within the same year, a new 40-gallon water heater, a new 50-gallon water heater, a new Water Softener System, and a new stand up Water Filter System, all A.O. I recently purchased a water heater, had it professionally installed, and the unit did not work at all (brand new). We called up the factory warranty since the distributor wouldn't allow us to refund it b/c it was already installed. The warranty people had us call a plumber that they referred me to. That plumber told us directly that they do not take warranty so I called the manufacturer again and they referred me to another plumber who finally came out ( at our own expense since apparently none of the plumbers they were referring us to actually work with them at all) to look at it only for them to not find anything wrong with the unit but claimed that it was faulty electrical from the house. We called an electrician and payed them to make 100% sure that the electrical was not the issue (which it was not)
At this point we just want to return the unit but we can't because the manufacturer INSISTS that we call another plumber to look at it AGAIN (at our own expense, though they claim that they will reimburse up to 100$ which is a JOKE since most plumbers will charge you easily double that just for diagnostics) because they still want proof that it's not their unit that's the problem, with no regard for the fact that we did everything by the book. It's cold and we just want our BRAND NEW heater to work and this company has done NOTHING to try to help us don't buy from them

If I could give them zero stars I would. We bought an AOSmith water heater 5 years ago. It failed on Christmas day. I pulled out my warranty and called customer service and they said you are still covered and gave me an auth # and told me to call the store where I purchased it. That's where the trouble began. Called the store - you need to return the old water heater to the store.... what? I'm 65 and do not own a truck. You'll have to hire a plumber to remove the old water heater and return it to the store. They will give you a store credit and then you need to hire a plumber to install the new water heater. So, essentially, it will be cheaper for me to just hire a plumber to replace the old one. Based on the fact that this $1,300 unit failed after 5 years I would not reccomend even purchasing this water heater to begin with notwithstanding the horrible customer service and what they call a warranty.

We have an AO Smith tankless water heater. The same exact unit we are discussing (which was 8 years old) catastrophically failed at the heat exchanger last year in July (we were fortunate it didn't cause a fire and burn down our house). They agreed to send a replacement unit, but would not pay for labor. We had the new unit replaced, and almost immediately started having problems.
7 service calls in less than a year for failure to ignite. AO Smith technical support tried to blame it on a multitude of issues, improper temperature settings, insufficient gas flow, but all tested fine. Every time the unit sits for more than 3 days, such as when we are out of town, we come back to the same 111 code (ignition failure). The technicians had always been the ones dealing with them, but today I called them myself. I explained that we have done everything they have been told to do, but we continue to have ignition failure and that they need to do something, as they clearly sent us a lemon.
The representative stated that it is out of warranty and they only would cover parts. I made it clear (and she confirmed) that we had raised this issue within just a few months of the new unit being installed, so labor should still be covered. She then retracted, saying that the warranty only transfers from the original unit, so even the parts would not be covered since the original unit was over 5 years old. WHAT? They send us a defective unit and won't even take responsibility for it? Steer clear of AO Smith. They clearly don't believe in their own products and don't stand behind them when a customer receives a defective "new" tankless water heater!

Updated on 08/01/2024: The wiring connection that provided power wasn’t completely connected correctly to the water heater, not AO Smith’s fault as I previously blamed the water heater, it was not the battery or a faulty control panel. This has been resolved and I retract my complaint.
Original Review: Yesterday ( July 31st) I had a brand new 50 gallon, 5500 Watt AO SMITH 300 Series water heater ( 9 year warranty) installed through Lowe’s, the install went well but when it was time to turn the brand new water heater on, there was no digital display, no lights, no activity, nothing, the installer checked voltage and connections multiple times, still nothing. The digital display requires a BR 2032 battery that’s already installed, but you have to pull the plastic tab to activate it, that was done and still no display. I have a brand new water heater that I’m not sure if the battery that’s already installed is dead? Or the control panel is faulty (which the battery is responsible for powering up) but at this point, nothing is working.
This unit comes with a battery that’s not easily found in your local stores, which the technician that installed the water heater found out after searching for an hour in a few local stores, that only carried a CR 2032 battery that won’t work. I’m highly dissatisfied with this product, I have no hot water, a brand new water heater that was shipped with a dead battery or a faulty control panel. If this is an indication of what I’m to expect over the next few years, I will be happy to return this water heater and buy a different brand, in my opinion, I can’t recommend this water heater after what I just experienced.

Bought a 40 gallon water heater from Lowe's and the water started smelling like rotten eggs. So a month after install I bought an electric anode and went to replace the one in the tank. I couldn't get the anode to loosen with a breaker bar, so I added an extension and the bolt rounded. Called A. O. Smith for an RMA which they gave but the lady said it was a common issue. Guy at Lowe's said if it rounds again they might not RMA again, so I called a local plumber supply company and they had AO Smith as well but it was their pro line. I thought, "Okay let's try that." Brought it home and opened the top of the box only and the water heater was dented on the top corner and bottom like someone dropped it from a forklift at the factory as the plumber supply had it on the floor and the dent was in a way that it could only have been done from height. I only cut away the top part of the box and didn't take the heater out of the box.
I went back to Lowe's and got another like an idiot. I had to use a 1/2" impact wrench to loosen a brand new anode rod that hasn't even gotten wet. Why are they torqueing a serviceable item down with 350 ft pounds? I have a feeling it's so you can't change the rod and the tank corrodes faster and you have to buy a new one. If this one fails I'm going with a competitor's brand even if it costs more. Now I get to go back to the plumbing supply company and hope they believe my "I swear it wasn't me" speech. Only good thing about the company was the lady that gave me the RMA. I don't have a picture of the bottom dent but it's just as bad as the top. I wish I saw this site prior to buying one.

After making this review, and another to the BBB, A.O. Smith customer service reached out to me and offered a "return authorization" for the defective/failing hot water heater. I received the new one yesterday and, though I had to pay a plumber again to install it, they did step-up and provide the new heater. I am glad we were able to resolve the issue.

In December 2016 I purchased a new house, never lived in previously. It had a State Proline XE gas hot water heater. In September 2020 it failed and was replaced under warranty, though I had to pay the certified plumber to install it. Now, just 3 1/2 years later, it has failed again with water all over my basement floor. However, this time, after calling and also emailing customer service with State (owned by A.O. Smith), they will not stand behind their faulty product. I'm being quoted over $2,000 for a new hot-water heater. NEVER will I purchase or have anything to do with this company and neither should you. If their hot-water heaters fail every three years or so, and they won't stand behind the product, why would you buy one?

I would give this product zero stars if it were an option. I purchased an AO Smith water heater 4 weeks ago. Then just one day shy of having it for a month, the heating elements and thermostat are bad. When I saw a man at Lowe’s returning an AO Smith water heater that should have been my sign to not purchase one. Their tech support told me I could not return it to Lowe’s and refused to give me a Return Authorization number saying that Lowe’s lied because they don’t give those numbers.
The Lowe’s associate said they have to have a return authorization number to get reimbursed and that customers get them from AO Smith all the time (another red flag). AO Smith also doesn’t have a contracted plumber in my area so I had to get my own and they are only willing to give me $100. It cost more than that for me to get a local plumber. Please do not waste your money on this product. Their customer service is awful and their product that you have to pay a lot for is total garbage.

I filed two complaint with the Texas Atty General Consumer Fraud Dept against A O Smith and Lowe's. My local plumbing company installed an A.O. Smith 50 gallon gas fired forced vent hot water heater in 2013. Less than 6 years later, it leaked and another duplicate heater was installed. Less than 11 years after the original heater was installed, the second one leaked and failed and was not covered under warranty. I am on city water with a water softener, so water quality is not the issue. The issue is poor tank quality. My next heater will be Bradford White, whom I have heard is having much longer lifetimes.

I've had 2 water heaters from A.O. Smith. The first failed sooner than normal and I wasn't able to make use of the warranty because they required a receipt for purchase that was no longer available. I purchased a new water heater from Lowe's this past week, and it was defective upon installation. The warranty center made several remarks about it being dry-fired by me, but reluctantly authorized a labor charge. The plumber found that the upper thermostat was defective and covered under warranty. It is a special order part. A.O. Smith has a policy of repair rather than replace. CONSUMER BEWARE!
Although I have purchased a new water heater, I must now wait for 3 to 5 days for the part, and then schedule the repair, while having no hot water in the home. The takeaway for me is this: DO NOT PURCHASE an A.O. Smith product unless there is not a better product from a company with a better reputation for customer care. There is a reason why there are so many poor reviews of this manufacturer. This is not a hit on Lowe's; the product was defective and Lowe's was willing to replace it, but they can't without an RM authorization from A.O. Smith. The people I have spoken with at A.O. Smith have been professional and helpful. It is the company that doesn't respect or value the customer, in my opinion.

Last week the unit started leaking. The company that installed the water heater came out the next day and replaced unit with same AO Smith unit. I'm glad the AO Smith was under warranty but the labor was $1200. So my original purchase 4 years ago went from $3000 to over $4200. I would never buy another AO Smith considering this experience. Called the number for 4 days and left multiple messages and never got a response. Obviously a bad contractor. So I call Smith back and they give me a number to another company. I call this company and they're out of state and can not service maryland. Call again to Smith, they have no other contractors in the area of my home and said I'd have to get my own plumber. This is now over a week without hot water. Call a local plumber and he comes right out the same day and calls Smith to get them to send the parts that were bad. He was great, took a few more days for the parts he came a day after they arrived and installed and I'm working again.
Here is my problem. I was forced to find my own plumber after spending days without hot water to contact a plumber contracted through their company with no luck. The most they would pay towards the repair was $100 and it cost me $275 in labor. I find it unacceptable to run a company with a warranty department that forced me to go elsewhere for the repair and would not cover the cost when I still had a full manufacturer warranty. I would understand if I didn't want to use their contractors but their contractors Obviously didn't need the work since they wouldn't call me back. There are plenty of other companies out there that stand behind their product 100% and not just sort of. I will not recommend anyone to buy from A. O. Smith just for the fact that the warranty is not very good. Either you make a good product and stand behind it 100% or you don't. They clearly don't.

Don't make the same mistake I did and buy a AO Smith water heater from Lowe's. Based on my experience with AO Smith I would encourage you not to even buy an A O Smith product in your lifetime or shop at Lowes. Reach out to a local installer and purchase your unit directly through them. I have had the misfortune of working with A O Smith customer service and Lowes twice to replace my $3k 80 gallon hybrid hot water heater. My first unit lasted a little more than 2 years and my second unit last only 1 year. Both units started to have heat pump failure codes that per the manual require me to contact customer service. They advise me that the unit need to be completed scrapped at a replacement labor cost of ~ $500, at my expense. I willingly paid this the first time but when the second one failed in a year I did not have the same willingness to concede so easily.
A O Smith, despite repeated attempts to work directly with them, will not provide any support with the return or replacement other than a by providing a simple RMA #, which you bring to Lowes with the unit for store credit. Unfortunately the coordination with Lowes, does not allow me to get a replacement before returning the other. Also, this isn't a unit that I am able to just pick up and bring into the store. An 80 gallon system requires special equipment or multiple (physically fit) people to move. Which is not an acceptable option for most homeowner. AO Smith and Lowes just continue to point the finger at each other at the cost of the customer. After repeated attempts to provide me a full refund with no success, I am now forced to work with a local heating provider to replace the unit and return my other unit for a $3k store credit to Lowes. Great!

WORSE Company with support, first you are treated like you are stupid, then when you show that you actually know what is going on, they find every excuse to not support you or provide technical support, I bought a Hybrid Water Heater, the unit will ALWAYS use one of the elements, regardless of the settings (support basically quoted me the manual, yet, still uses one element even on heat pump setting) then they basically told me there is no way I would know... Like I don't have a home energy meter that monitors circuits... It is 2023, anyone with solar knows we can monitor energy usage.... Then I told them that the "time of use" is useless as the whole point someone will use it is so the heater only works during low rate hours, well....it does not, it will turn in ANYTIME...
Here, I was told again, to read the manual and that there was an "error" in the marketing, yeah, the main reason to buy this heater... Then I was told to put the heater on vacation mode or just use a timer (like the one I had with my previous heater that cost 1/3 of the price), so this "smart" unit will be render useless with a timer. At this point since they refuse to actually acknowledge the issues I send them an email with a line full of sarcasm....
"I bet the next CSR will ask me to make sure my Heater is plugged in the wall." There the magic happened, next email ignored my issues and I was told that I am REQUIRED to submit a picture of my heater (that was installed by a professional from Mr Rooter) to ensure it was installed properly and MUST show that it does not have a plug going into the wall... Really!!! If I do not comply, my technical support will not be honored.... Yup, they did not read all my requests, but used a sarcasm line to find a loophole to not admit that the unit does not work as advertised!!! Save your money, buy a Rheem as these people could have had a great unit, but they literally do not care for their customers.

But we really didn’t have a choice, that’s all Lowe's had in the gallon size we needed. We installed. No problem. (We installed our last one as well.) Turned the power on to it and error 4 came up. No hot water either. We call customer service and tell them what’s going on and they basically tell us it was our fault. They said we must have turned on the power before the tank was full and dry fired it. That’s impossible because we know better. We made sure it was completely full and no air was in the lines. They told us to go to lowes and get new elements and they would be free because it’s brand new.
Lowes looked at me like I was stupid and said they have never heard of that before. So I had to pay for those out of pocket. We drained the tank and replaced those and refilled it again. Flipped on the power and guess what! No hot water and error code. I call back customer service and after several hang ups from their end and 2 hours later, they told us to go get 2 more elements. We did that and repeated the process, no hot water again. They gave me a number to a tech (in our area) so I called. He’s not in our area after all so no one can come service it either.
After that they decided to give us a return authorization number to return to lowes. Only problem is... this brand is all lowes has. Also, lowes is no help whatsoever. If they're going to sell a product, then they should stand behind it. Lesson learned, next time just pay the install to be done by lowes, that way they're on the hook if something goes wrong. Very very disappointed in both AO smith and lowes!!

Do not EVER buy a water heater from AO Smith. They do NOT honor their warranty, and are IMPOSSIBLE TO reach! I bought a top-of-the line AO Smith heater from Lowe's less than 2 years ago, with a 12-year warranty. Even though it is barely used, the heating element went bad in it 2 months ago. Trying to contact AO Smith on the phone means being on hold for HOURS. Their nearest service tech is over 100 miles away and will not come to my house to service the heater. He did offer to send me the part and get it installed by a local plumber - but wanted $40 to ship it! This is a $20 part at Home Depot.
After numerous attempts at phone calls to them, I emailed AO Smith’s “Customer Service”. They refuse to send me the replacement part or even discuss the matter over email, insisting I have to call them. Well, after over two hours on hold AGAIN I gave up, and ordered the part from Home Depot. I’ll be leaving this review of their products and “service” on every online forum. Spread the word: Do not EVER buy a AO Smith water heater!!

Purchased a 50-gallon AO Smith electric hot water heater at Lowes. This heater was for my daughter. Had to replace the thermostat and elements in less than 30 days as the thermostat was stuck. Not only did she have this problem but the heater made her water "greasy." She started noticing a film in her sink and every time she would wash her hair it felt oily. I sent an email to the company on March 3, 2022 showing my purchase receipt and the receipts for the repairs along with a picture of a burned-out element. Almost two weeks later and no reply from the company. Two months and over $600 wasted, I purchased and installed another brand and the "greasy" problem went away immediately.

Original Review: Feb. 22, 2022
My 5-month old A. O. Smith water heater (50-gallon. natural gas ProLine) stopped working last week. The pilot light couldn't be restarted and the status light was dead. The 6-year warranty is a farce, as there are no plumbing services in my area authorized to provide warranty service. I wasted hours calling every plumber A. O. Smith told me to call. None of them would work on my water heater because I was too far away from all of them.
(I'm in a heavily populated area of NJ about 20 miles from NYC.) A. O. Smith Support told me they couldn't update the database to correct the bad information, and they couldn't do much for me other than authorize the shipment of replacement parts once the defective part was identified. They would not cover my own plumber's labor charge. So I'm out hundreds of dollars in labor to my local plumber because A. O. Smith couldn't provide an authorized plumber to work on it. Not cool. These water heaters are expensive, and they may have been reliable at one time, but they're not reliable anymore, and the customer support is horrible.

I spent $1600 for this hybrid water heater and took out the extended warranty. Within 7 months the sensor went. They gave me a list of technicians and told me to call them to diagnose the problem and gave me a labor code for which the plumbers need for payment. The plumbers told me that I was on the hook for the diagnosis because AO Smith decided that the problem was my basement (even though it was installed according to specs by a master plumber and that it was under 1 year old). I called the support line back. This time the customer support rep told me that it appears to be an issue with the sensor, for which the first CSR had missed diagnosed. And said she would send out the part and gave me a difference labor repair number for the contracted plumber to use to install the part.
After 4 weeks the part never arrived. I called back and another CSR told me that the prior CSR was wrong and that it would be too expensive to replace the part because the plumber would have to take the whole thing apart. So they said I needed to bring the unit back to Lowe's to get it replace. Here's the kicker. They wanted me, a person with no plumbing experience, to disconnect the unit and bring it to Lowe's to get it replaced because Lowe's will not replace the unit without the broken one.
So I got their approval for the plumber to come and take out the unit and take to Lowe's. I had to coordinate with Lowe's to make sure they had one in stock as it is January and I cannot be without a water heater for an extended time. When the plumber was finished he billed me for $442. AO Smith said that they only reimburse $150!! Even though the warranty states that the unit is under full warranty up to a year. It appears that the sensors are very prone to going bad. Beware! This product will cost you more money then it will save you. Save yourself the anguish of dealing with a dishonest company that does not live up to their product guarantee. If you can find it, get the GE GeoSpring.

I opted to take the water heater back to the store, although I paid for delivery because I didn't want to be without water for another 4 days waiting on Lowe's to pick it up - paid the plumber for this. The plumber got the second water heater installed, and it will not fire up. The pilot light only stays on when the function button is down, once it's released, the pilot goes out. The parts are under warranty, but the labor to replace the ignition rod will cost me $1350.00 + TAX. The plumbers even said that as they opened up the water heater, it's common to find some other parts broken that need be replaced. So the labor cost can be easily go more than $3000 (which I can buy two water heaters). The plumber happily took $285 diagnostic fee and walked away. The plumber who installed the heater came out 3 times and went through various troubleshooting steps over the phone with A.O. Smith. Water heater didn't work after installed, AO Smith customer support mentioned that "Gas valve" may be faulty and they shipped a new valve. The second valve also didn't work (I hired handyman for this work), so they said they will have to ship a third one. This time they sent their hired installer for the third gas valve and the third valve also didn't work. At this point I reached out to them to fix the water heater or replace it. They offered me two resolutions
1. They asked me to Uninstall the water heater and return it to the store and exchange for a new water heater (this will cost me $500 to hire handyman and a van again, remember the water heater is 10 days old and falls under Lowe's return policy) and they said they will provide $150 for install (Install quotes in Bay Area are close to $1000).
2. They will ship another gas valve (4th)
It didn't make sense for me that they are asking me to do all the work of returning, replacing and installing for $150 instead of they fixing the issues (Install quotes itself in Bay Area are close to $1000). When I raised a concern and requested them to do the work of replacing and installing, they said they only provide a "limited warranty" and all they can do is provide $150 for me to uninstall, transport the water heater, get a new water heater and get it installed. This is deceit and cheating. They sold me a new water heater, which was defective and they are not taking ownership of repairing it or replacing it with their own dime. AO Smith said it was the Delta unit in the shower. (Not) Then they said it was Plumming. So by the time I jumped through all of AO Smith’s hoops still no hot water. So the next day I call Lowe’s and they tell me they don’t take back AO Smith water heaters without an authorization return from the company. So then I send over an hour on the phone with the company and they won’t issue the return authorization without making repairs on the hot water heater that they don’t pay for. It’s all on you!!! I asked them why isn’t this ridiculous process posted in Lowe’s and listed on your box. They can’t explain why. I bought another just like it and returned the 1st to Lowes and was told I needed a RA#. Fortunately I spend A LOT of $$ with Lowes because I flip houses and the manager took it back.
So I install #2 water heater and THE VERY SAME PROBLEM - not enough hot water and the pop-off valve starts leaking. After numerous phone calls and being given service repair companies phone numbers I was either told they couldn't come out or would charge if they didn't find a problem. So I had my electrician check it out but found no issue with the elements??? I replace the pop-off valve and it still leaks!! Now after another lengthy phone call to AO Smith, with some kid that sounds like he is still in high school, they want to send out another technician out.....Moral of story - DON'T BUY AN A.O. My son was emptying a 5 gallon bucket of water everyday. We called the plumber. He said there was nothing he could do. We called the company. They said to take pictures and send them to the company. We filmed it and sent it in to them to show where the water was leaking. They told us to take pictures. We did so. The company said to take it apart and take pictures of the coils. I told him the manual stated if we touched it our warranty would be void. They still insisted that we take it apart.
I did my best and took pictures. They told us they wanted pictures of the coils. (What?!!) I didn't know what I was doing, or what they wanted from me. My son took more of it apart, but still unsure of what they wanted. We just wanted our money back or for them to replace the whole system. Nothing. We were terribly dissatisfied. If I could give NO STARS I would. The water heater I had for 17 years went out so I went to Lowe's to purchase a new one. I wish I would had research this brand first. After having it installed the water pressure only on the HOT WATER side was low (NEVER had that issue with the old heater). So I looked at the user manual and it stated on page 26 that the issue would be Melted Dip Tube OR partially closed supply value. Well the value was okay so the only option left per the user manual was the dip tube.
I called the customer service and the guy I spoke with said there was a link in my home and I need to call a plumber. I had a plumber come out and I paid $100 for them to tell me there was NO leak in my home. So I called back and the same guy was like I could had swore that was the issue. So I told him that per the user manual what it said. Of course he did not even know what I was talking about. So then I spoke with a female that gave me a authorization code to use to call another Plumber out. She didn't give me a plumber to call just a authorization number. So I called back and spoke with someone else who said the first lady should had gave me the plumber to speak with.
They sent out a dip tube and gave me the plumber to call to come out for which they said they would pay for. Well another plumber came out and they also stated that there was no leak in my home but that there is some kind of part you can purchase from Lowe's to connect onto the heater to make the water come out faster. The plumber did not even look at the dip tube. Fast forward 2 weeks later. I receive a bill from the plumber saying that AO SMITH did not cover/honor the authorization code since the issue was not the dip tube.
Nowhere in any conversation of the 4 individuals I spoke with say that you would receive a bill from ANOTHER plumber. Granted I had already paid for a previous plumber to check my home for a leakage that did not exist but that AO SMITH said that was the issue. Then I called to speak with a manager by the name of DEE that was RUDE AND DID NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING I WAS SAYING. I asked for someone to listen to ALL RECORDED CALLS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. I told her that AO SMITH said it was the dip tube since it was not leakage in my home.
After FINALLY getting her to listen to what I was saying she was like she would have someone to listen to the calls. I asked how long would that take since most companies would give a estimated time of listening to the call such as 5-7 business days. She said she don't know and they would just call me back. That is not professional or acceptable. Do I expect to hear back from this company in a timely fashion, NO. I would recommend to NOT BUY ANY PRODUCTS from this company. Avoid this company. We own a two-year-old AOSmith heat pump water heater, which recently filled our basement with acrid black smoke that took two days to dissipate. When we first discovered the smoke, we cut power to the unit to stop it from smoking and waited for the plumber. The plumber could see and smell the smoke from the unit but could not determine where inside the unit it was coming from.
When we called the warranty line at AOSmith to report this, they said the plumber needed to come back and they would guide him through a series of steps to help him find visible scorching inside the unit. The plumber came back and walked through AOSmith's prescribed steps but could not find any scorched parts. The company's representative told us, in a monotone voice (reading from scripted remarks, it seemed) that because there was no visible scorching there was no manufacturing defect, so the warranty would not cover repairing or replacing the unit.
There is clearly a defect, unless spewing black, acrid smoke is something the heater is supposed to do. And if it happened once it will probably happen again, perhaps when we're not home. Every time we leave the house for an extended period of time we feel the need to turn off the power to the unit so it doesn't catch on fire, which means that we have to wait several hours for hot water if we're away for a few days. (The representative I spoke with said there's a trip switch that cuts off power to the unit if it catches on fire, but if the unit is already on fire, how would that help?) The company obviously doesn't care about their defective products, and doesn't seem to care that their heater could start a fire that could burn our house to the ground. AOSmith won't stand behind their water heaters. If something goes wrong, you're on your own. Buy from a more responsible company.

We purchased our hot water heater from Lowe's on October 17,2017 and have had nothing but trouble since. Within 3-4 weeks of owning it and with the temperature set on the Hot (120) it continued to rise to 150+. Called and they told us the water was stacking and to drain the water and refill and this should solve the problem. Within another 3-4 weeks we were having the same problem, so we set it on vacation. Still did not cool down. Called technician and they shipped new thermostat control unit. We followed instruction again and set on Hot (120) and within weeks it is back to 150. So now it's on pilot with no decrease of temperature. During this time we have drained the hot water heater 4 times, wasting 160 gallons of water. We have had only 3 gas hot water heaters for 40 years and this is the only one to give us constant trouble.

I do not even know where to begin. My father came over to my house and he and I installed the brand new 50 gallon electric water heater Saturday. We have done several before and have a working knowledge of how to install them. Once installed, we filled the tank with cold water, let the hot water run in the sink for 5 minutes until it was a steady stream and no air came out. We then turned the breaker on and waited. By morning I had NO hot water. I went down and checked for 240 volts and had it. I then checked to make sure there was 240 volts going to the top element and the bottom. My multi meter confirmed power was going throughout the system. This is when I emailed your company and explained my problem. I did not receive a reply for 2 days so I just went out and bought 2 heating elements and an upper lower thermostat from Lowe's and figured I would replace one at a time until it worked.
To make a long story short, I eventually installed all 4 and it still didn't work. We already knew how to test the ohms and resistance on each part so we did that and all were within tolerance. Your reply to my email came on Monday afternoon and all it had was a video that showed everything we had already done as far as testing the ohms and resistance. I emailed Lowe's corporate customer service and explained to them I believed I had a faulty water heater and explained to them the whole process. They wrote me back and told me they had a 30 day/90 day policy that if I wasn't satisfied with a product it could be returned with a receipt within that time frame.
Although I absolutely HATED to drain the tank, replace all the parts I had changed back to the original ones, unhook everything and drag it upstairs and into my truck by myself, I had been without hot water now for 4 days so I decided to do it thinking I would have hot water with a new tank in a matter of hours. I get to Lowe's, get a cart and take it out of my truck, haul it in and showed them the email Corporate sent me saying I could return it and handed them my receipt. They then told me I needed a RA # from you. I told them I emailed and all I got was an email with a hot water heater for dummies video showing me everything I already knew and had already performed. Several times. Manager said she would call your customer support and try to get a RA # so I could exchange it for another one that worked.
SO, I got BILLY ** on the line and he proceeded to tell me that I was going to have to take it all the way back home, drag it back down the stairs, hook it all back up and fill it with water and go through the same tests I had already performed. I told him SEVERAL times that I had already done this AND replaced the parts, trying to save a trip back and draining and unhooking it, etc. He was so busy trying to talk over me that he didn't hear half of what I said which was evident because I had to explain 3 more times later in the conversation that I had already done all of this stuff. I explained to him that I hadn't had hot water for 4 days and that we never even heard a buzz or anything when we turned the power on. You can usually hear a slight buzz when the element comes on to start heating.
I suggested it was a electrical or manufacturing defect possibly and he acted like this can NEVER happen. (Which I learned today does happen because a friend at work had one installed by BGE Home and it was bad right out of the box and had to bring another one in.) He didn't want to hear this. I told him everything we had done and this wasn't our first rodeo. He told me he was going to talk to his supervisor and get back with me. So I waited and waited for 10 minutes, in Lowe's on the manager's personal cell phone. He finally comes back on the line and tells me that his supervisor was going to authorize me to get. (I was really happy at this point thinking I was going to finally get hot water). 2 new elements and to go home and hook it all back up and install them and then call him back for some tests. (Proving that he wasn't listening to anything I had told him several times prior as he was trying to out talk me).
At this point I had to just hang up on him before I lost my cool in Lowe's. Long story short, AS MUCH AS IT KILLED ME to buy another one of YOUR water heaters, I was desperate at this point for hot water and went back and got the identical heater and paid another $400. And guess what? I went home, hooked it up, exactly the way we did before and it's working perfectly. I can't understand for the life of me why BILLY ** couldn't understand that this tank is bad somehow. It's not rocket science! You hook 2 power wires up, fill it with water. Run the hot faucet side until the air stops and then give it the juice. But he absolutely would not let me exchange it or give Lowe's a RA #. I even told him I wasn't refunding it, I just wanted an exchange so we could get a hot shower for God's sake. Get your tank shipped back to you and rebuild it and sell it again. Nope.
He was stuck on me dragging it back and redoing the tests and I am 100 percent sure I would have ended up having to return it AGAIN after the tests to exchange it. This experience is utterly ridiculous. Although the reason I went with an AO Smith Signature tank was because I read several reviews that really praised them and the ones from Home Depot, not so much, never again. This was my first and last AO Smith product and will seriously consider not using the other brand names you produce. I plan on posting my review every possible place I can find to stay away from AO Smith tanks and that your customer service is horrible. Now I have a brand new tank that is useless and am out $400. I hope ole BILLY ** sleeps well at night. BTW, Lowe's took all 4 replacement pieces back even though they were installed and gave me a full refund. How's that for customer service!!

I have rental houses, and I have had three bad electric water heaters in 6 months, I will never purchase another A.O. Smith water heater from Lowe's. Do not waste your time or money. 1st one had a leak in the tank and tenant did not notice until it had quit working. It was so rusted, it looked like it was 20 years old. They did replace the unit, but I had to pay for the labor. Since it was slightly over a year old, and since it was 3 hours away, it was very costly to me.
2nd one started screaming like a tornado siren after 5 months old. They said it was a whistling element. They did pay for a plumber to replace elements, and two months later, they are whistling again. This time they wanted me to replace the elements. And I refused, so they agreed to pay for plumber to replace elements again. They were going to replace elements with an upgraded heavy duty version. They finally did yesterday, we will see how this works, but meantime when plumber was there, he left the pop off valve open while filling the tank, and flooded the hallway. He was out in his truck on the phone. Luckily the tenant heard the water and shut valve off.
3rd one a few days ago, installed in rental an hour away. Tenant called that evening and said there was only a trickle of water coming out the hot water side. Sent handyman back out the next day to cut water lines and find obstruction. After messing around found it was not in my lines, but directly from the tank was an obstruction restricting the water flow. So had to purchase another new water heater at local hardware store, and hopefully a better brand, to be able to restore water for tenant. Then next day I got a snotty person at Lowe's telling me that I cannot return a water heater that has been installed without calling A.O. Smith first.
Well, on top of all the aggravation and time and money it cost me to deal with the junky faulty product, I did not want to waste any more of my time on it. Luckily I have connections at Lowe's, and someone else took care of it for me, but it was very upsetting. Very poor quality , don't waste your time and money. From now on, I will buy my water heaters at a plumbing supply house, where plumbers go. They told me that the water heaters are made a lot better quality for them, vs the ones made for the Box stores.

I replaced both thermostats and sent the invoice to A.O.Smith and they did reimburse me for the cost of the thermostats and it appears to have solved the problem.

A. O. Smith warranty is almost like not having one. They will authorize replacement one part at a time but you have to pay for the labor. One service call cost at least twice as much as parts in the water heater. I spoke with Megan at no customer service. She was programmed like a robot about what to say but did not understand anything I was saying. So with no help from A. O. Smith I am paying for parts and will fix water heater myself so they achieved their goal paying nothing but maybe this review will keep someone else from having to go through this.
