I purchased an AO Smith 40 gallon water heater at Lowe's. I bought it because it was sitting at Lowe's and I figured it was good quality. I smelled a gas leak behind the control module after 5 months. So we talked to AO Smith and they refused to honor a trade in. Apparently, there is a residential model and a mobile home model. According to the model numbers. They are pretty much identical side by side. So we accidentally put in a MH model in a residence. So my anger was at Lowe's for not pointing that out. But what can you really expect from store clerks? Some really know their stuff and some just don't care. So it wasn't entirely their fault.

I was really angry with AO Smith. How were we supposed to know that? A professional plumber might know. They need to mark their water heaters properly. Like a big orange sticker or something to let the customer know the proper model. So I was out about $600. So I shopped at a local water heater store. They specialize in them. I purchased a Bradford White and am totally thrilled with it. They gave me the proper model and they will bring me a new one if there are any issues. Good for six years. Shop around some and find the right model for your place. A professional plumber is a big help too. It's worth the money. I will never shop in one of those big box stores for a big item ever again. Thanks for reading.

HORRIBLE SERVICE FROM AO SMITH!! They DO NOT BACK UP THEIR OWN PRODUCTS!!! I purchased my AO Smith heater at Lowe's. The pressure valve was damaged and leaked as soon as water was in the tank. The threads were destroyed, and the valve had clearly already been repaired. AO Smith made me call my own plumber to try and fix it. Now I have to pay the labor to remove their defective heater and to reinstall, out of pocket. They have no appeals process, nor do they have their own technicians to service/repair their own products.. DONT DO IT!! It's costing me $400 out of pocket for their defect. I will NOT EVER buy another AO Smith product!!

I got my water heater when we built our house six years ago. The gas sensor went out yesterday and even though the 6 year warranty should still be good they will not cover the part. It's a $1,000 part that should last much longer than six years. Anyways.... Awful company that will never see any business from me again (and will see my review posted everywhere I can put one). I'm currently buying a new water heater from someone else.

I Purchased a new AO Smith electric water heater from Lowe's and installed it in one of my apartments. It seemed to not be heating but I left it overnight and asked my tenants to let me know if it got hot. It did not heat up! I purchased another new AO Smith water heater to replace the defective one and it worked fine. I was not able to return it to Lowe's because AO Smith customer service said it was believed to be in "fixable condition". I had already purchased and installed the new one. The Lowe's GM was very gracious and took care of the problem. I'm very disappointed in AO Smith, not only because of their poor customer service and return policy, but also the fact that it seems that this poor quality of product seems to be a growing problem for this once high quality company. Sad day for AO Smith as they will be losing a lot of business over these issues.

Bought new gas water heater and paid to have it installed by local handyman. It leaked where rod goes onto tank. Removed and Teflon taped connection and it fixed leak. Need 1 1/17 inch ratchet to remove. Gave no clue how this came out - if factory not taped. Woke up next morning to a puddle under heater. Called handyman back in. Heater was defective! Tech support verified and had us return defective to Lowe's and get new one. Handyman installed again (cost me again!) Tech support said they could reimburse for removal and reinstallation labor cost up to $150. Not sure how they came to that cost as reinstalling, removal, return, get new one and have it installed again costs a lot more than that!

Submitted bill as requested to get reimbursed. Got runaround for 2 weeks. Finally heard back with a denial of reimbursement because handyman was not a licensed plumber and they could not 1099 him. I was not told this prior, all I was told was to send an invoice when completed. Not only was the product defective, the customer service department is misleading and this company treats customers like crap. Go elsewhere and buy a product that has quality assurance and respects customers. Subpar product and horrible customer service!

We bought an AOSmith 40-gallon water heater and have an experienced electrician installed it. We waited for 3 days without any hot water. We concluded that the unit was a manufactured defect and decided to get another AOSmith to try. We had the same electrician to install the unit and we got hot water after 15 minutes. We returned the defective unit to Lowe's but were unable to get MRA. AOSmith representative required us to reinstall the defective unit so they can troubleshoot. We cannot wait for AOSmith to fix their quality issue while we cannot get hot water in the early Spring. We are very unhappy with your policy. You can take our money by refusing to allow for return the product this time but you will earn another purchase from us. Lowe's should offer more water heater selection and stand by the product that you sell or risk to lose many, many customers.

Had an A. O. Smith water tank that lasted 5 years. Luckily they replaced their defective product (although I paid over $900 in service fees, etc) because the warranty was 6 years. However my “new” water tank also failed less than 2 years later. This one was not covered because the “original warranty” was 6 years. How does that make sense!?! Did they give me a used one or something? I thought we had a new one installed and it would carry a 6 years warranty but I guess you only get 6 years your whole life with this company.

I read through their terms and nowhere does it say that your replacement is covered under the first one. A. O. Smith kept using the term “original” purchase and since the second one was not the “original” purchase it does not have a 6 year warranty. Long story short, I will spend over $5,000 in 2 years for a water tank!! Making matters worse, customer service does not care... At least they thanked me for staying on hold for 39 minutes!

AO SMITH HAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COMPLETELY WORTHLESS PRODUCT WARRANTY. Do not purchase and have their products installed in your home. My AO Smith water heater purchased was still under warranty when the pilot burner and gas valve assembly stopped working and needed to be replaced. After I called and paid a plumber to diagnose the issue, it took 6+ hours of phone calls with the worst customer service I've ever experienced with AO Smith. Their terrible reviews covering the internet from thousands of other disappointed customers share the same experience I did.

In my experience with AO Smith's customer service they transferred me to the incorrect department three time only to go back on hold for 20 minutes each time, AO Smith couldn't locate replacement parts, AO Smith recommended a plumber who's been out of business for several years, AO Smith was supposed to overnight parts, even called back to confirm the parts were shipped only to find out the next day when I called they never shipped the parts and one is out of stock.

AO Smith's product warranty only covers parts. If you need parts that need to be overnighted, that expense is on you. If you need labor to install their parts, that expense is on you. After AO Smith couldn't get the simple pilot burner and gas valve assembly I needed, I had to get an entirely new water heater, which cost me $600 to install. AO Smith will not help pay any of your expenses and their customer service is atrocious. This company is a joke, I do not recommend their water heaters at all. Find another brand.

I will never purchase another AO Smith water heater. I had an AO Smith water heater in my home prior to purchasing the home. The water heater was brand new when I purchased the home. The water heater lasted 5 years. It sprung a leak and then caught fire in the middle of the night. Luckily, the fire was localized and the flames did not spread.

I had 11 months remaining on the warranty. Discovering this issue at 5:00 am, I visited the AO Smith Website to see what actions were necessary to secure my home safely. There were a list of 3 service providers in the area, so I called one. The technician was able to look up my warranty and set me up with an appointment for a replacement water heater same day. I felt as though I had to move along.

I was instructed to settle up my warranty with AO Smith. They said they could offer me $500 and that I could get a new water heater from anywhere and use any company. Well, how convenient after I already made arrangements with their forced provider. AO Smith got back to me at 3:00 in the afternoon telling me about my options when I contacted them just before 10:00 am AND of course I contacted their service provider at 5:15 am and already got the ball rolling because I thought I had to use their provider.

I spent $1441 on the new heater and labor. I was able to get AO Smith to raise the offer to $791 but that still puts me out $650. I would have been in better shape with the $500 and a service and parts sale from somewhere else - like Sears where I would have preferred to shop - lower prices and an interest free charge on their credit card.

I am upset about this unnecessary mark-up because of AO Smith's faulty products and slow/poor customer service. I am nervous about the fact that I have another AO Smith water heater in my home. In another 5 years when this piece of junk kicks the bucket, I will absolutely be purchasing a different brand elsewhere. DO NOT purchase an AO Smith product.

I replaced a water heater in 2014 with an A. O. Smith water heater. Less than a year later the water heater burst from the bottom. Since the water heater was still under warranty it was replaced with another A. O. Smith, although it took almost three days to get the company contracted by A. O. Smith to acquire a new water heater. In 2016, the water heater began to leak from a crack at the top of the water heater. Since it was still under warranty, it again took several days to replace the water heater. The company's customer service representatives were helpful, but it seems that the company's policies do not provide the customers for assistance and timely replacements.

Now, two days ago, Friday, the the water heater burst again. Called A. O. Smith and customer representatives gave me an R# for a replacement, but the company used by A. O. Smith the last two times to replace the water heater do not work on weekends and close at 4:30 PM daily. So finally being fed up with A. O. Smith, I acquired quotes from Plumbers to have a replacement Water Heater installed, the question I asked each Plumber was, "What brand of Water Heater will be installed?" Not one Plumber answered with A. O. Smith, and several stated they would never use A. O. Smith. Photos attached will show the the lack of quality.

I purchased 7 AO SMITH water heaters for my two flats, as only those could fit over false ceiling of the flats' bathrooms. All geysers develop a problem of cathode which results in heated water with very bad foul smell, harmful to your skin. I got the cathode replaced by paying service charges as well as Rs 1200/- and was told now onwards there should be no problem. Within not even six months, the same problem comes up. Hence with their heaters you have to keep replacing their cathode very frequently and budget for min Rs 2500/- annual expense for it.

Shockingly the company does not care for its customers. I wrote a personal letter to their CEO in India; not even an acknowledgement or somebody from service dept contacting me to listen to and sort out problem. It is a lousy company. Never buy their product. I am stuck. As against this, I have experience of using local brand geysers for over 25 years without any worry or maintenance or serving support.

I purchased a AO Smith hot water heater on 2/23/19. After installation and powering the unit on I get an error code an hour later indicating I have a bad lower heating element. I called technical support but of course there’s no one available till Monday. In the meantime I have their useless product taking up space in my house NOT providing hot water.

On Monday I called and had to request that a tech call me back when one of them becomes available. I did check the lower heating element for continuity and it did have 12 ohms, so it’s a good element. I decided to replace the element just to be sure while waiting for someone to return my call. After turning the power back on I get another error code an hour later indicating that the UPPER heating element was bad. I checked the element for continuity. I found 12 ohms. There’s nothing wrong with the element. In the meantime, I have no hot water going on 3 days. Eventually someone did return my call. We did some troubleshooting to decide what exactly was wrong with this brand new piece of garbage. I was to call back after I had rebooted the unit without the display module. I had to leave a request for someone to return my call again. No one called me.

So now it’s Tuesday and I called again, and again I had to request someone return my call. After about half a day later someone returned my call. This tech decided to send me a new electronic thermostat. He said they would over night it and someone would be calling me with more info. No one called me back. Again, I had to call and leave a request for someone to call me back. Someone did call me back. She didn’t know why I was not contacted about the overnight shipment of the thermostat but guaranteed me it would be here by the end of the day. It is now 8:25 pm. No thermostat. I am now 5 days without hot water. This is as sorry a product as it gets. 5 DAYS WITH NO HOT WATER BUT A BRAND NEW HOT WATER HEATER. Don’t waste your time with these losers, buy a Rheem.

Little known secret is A. O. Smith knows who you are if you bought one of their Low NOx water heaters that were recalled back in November 2018. Call and give them the serial number and they confirm your name from their computer systems. So that begs the question, if they knew 600,000+ water heaters were extreme fire hazards and needed to be recalled, why did they not CONTACT THE OWNERS of these units to initiate the repair process? I only found out a few days ago when my unit started roaring like a bonfire spewing flames from the front of the unit.

Trouble is, they are so overwhelmed you can't get it fixed and they tell you to shut down the system for safety reasons. How long can you go without hot water? That is the game they are playing... Hoping you'll just go out and buy a new unit on your own so they'll be off the hook on repairs. Disgusting. I contacted our local ABC consumer reporter to get the word out at least on TV so people will know to check their units. Bottom line, avoid buying A. O. Smith products. Very dangerous.

I am extremely dissatisfied with my ongoing, unresolved hot water tank issue. I purchased a 50-Gal. Electric Hot Water Tank from Lowe's and I had a licensed plumber install it that same day. 24 hours later, the thermostat went out, the wires burned, and it tripped the breaker. The technicians over the phone keep giving me the 'run-around' trying to put cause and blame on the installation. The issue is not the installation, but on a defective unit. I had a licensed plumber install per the manufacturer's instruction book. He advised me to contact the Technical Support Call Center as it wasn't the install, but the unit itself and it's under warranty. The Call Center will not do anything to speed up this process until a technician from their contracted company comes out to inspect it. It's going to take one week for them to come out! The call center said I can use a local vendor if I want to speed up the process, but they will only cover plumbers up to $100.

Plumbers I called charge a minimum of $150 (Flat rate of $40 just to come out, and then $100/hour after that, with a minimum of 1-hr). I've already spent approx. $1200 to date on the products + labor! So if I want AO Smith to cover the charges, I have to wait until their contracted technicians come out, so now I'm waiting. On top of that, if the unit is deemed to be irreparable they will not cover the cost of labor to have the new unit installed! That I, the customer, will have to incur the charges for installing the new unit. This means I will have paid twice for labor - the first time and then the second time! How fair is this?!

When I purchased this product from Lowe's, I expected it to be working. In all fairness, Lowe's did say they will replace the unit. But the call center is just spinning me around in circles and not assisting in any way. I am extremely unhappy, dissatisfied and would not recommend using their tanks. I don't know what the outcome will be, but with a 6-year warranty, I hope I don't have to deal with them in the future as they are of little help, empathy, and try to spin the blame on the install.

Almost immediately after my 50 gallon A. O. Smith hot water heater was installed by a local plumbing contractor, it started making a high pitched whine that could be heard through my house. The plumbing contractor replaced the burner assembly which did not resolve the problem and indicated that I would have to contact A. O. Smith directly for warranty service. To the company's credit they provided work order numbers for five service calls for an outside contractor and after replacing just about every part except the tank were not able to fix the problem. After numerous phone calls to the manufacturer they finally agreed to replace the unit but are insisting that they will not pay for the labor because the heater is over a year old. I have explained that the problem (documented) was reported well within the first year and they should not be able to "run out the clock" if they cannot fix the problem within the first year.

As frustrating as this is, dealing with their telephone customer service department is even worse. In the last week I have made more than a dozen phone call and each time keep being passed back and forth from the warranty department to the recall department. I have been told on several occasion that I cannot be transfer to a supervisor or manager and must wait for a call back which usually occurs the next day.

My advice is if anyone needs to replace their hot water heater DO NOT buy an A. O. Smith water heater and if you are using a plumbing contractor, insist that they not use this product either. And if anyone from A. O. Smith reads this comment, please feel free to get in touch with me. You know who I am, David from Manhattan Beach, CA.

Our 22 year old Reliance failed (all over the floor) a few days before Thanksgiving, and we purchased the A.O. Smith replacement water heater that was manufactured 8/2018. Installation was in a small closet in a tight hallway, but everything seemed fine. The water heated up fast, but every time we ran the hot water the house vibrated like a huge UFO had landed and was idling... The installer came back four times over the week, and I spent an extra $285 to have the vent pipe replaced to no avail, when the senior installer who came out that day realized that it was the model of A.O. Smith that had issues with the burner assembly brackets.

He contacted AO Smith and they gave us an authorization number and referred us to a local company (Frontier Plumbing) that was handling the repairs. They came out twice and adjusted the bracket, but the sound got worse, so I contacted AO Smith. They called me back quickly and Hunter apologized and overnighted a new burner unit, which he assured would eliminate the defective part. Frontier came out immediately the next day, installed it and all is fine. The reason for three stars is that no actual recall or notification was put out on this issue because it was a "hit and miss" problem with the water heaters, and I feel that a company with huge historical magnitude as A.O. Smith is should have sent out a recall notice for "potential" issues. The three stars are a strong appreciation that they stood behind their product and made it right.

Our brand new water heater moans every time it comes on. They sent out a plumber that adjusted this and tweaked that, but it did nothing. I found the exact issue on YouTube and told them I would need a new burner. That was the last I've heard from them. Filed a BBB complaint and they simply ignored it. As far as I can tell, the same factory puts out Whirlpool water heaters, as well. Just put a different badge on it. I will never touch one of these products again.

We had a brand new A. O. Smith 80 gallon water heater (ECT 80 120) professionally installed in September 2014. Just before Thanksgiving 2018 it started leaking. The water looked rusty, so we inferred the bottom of the tank had begun to rust. Our plumber surmised the tank was defective from the start. We contacted A. O. Smith and were told "to feel free to replace the water heater with any other brand", since they no longer make 80 gallon tanks, and "to keep the receipts and the rating sticker on the old tank". No word on how the 6-year warranty on the water heater was going to be honored.

Well, it was not. A. O. Smith proceeded to offer to "buy us out" of the warranty, at a low-balled fraction of the cost that it would take to replace the leaking tank with a like-for-like model of another brand. They are very hard to get a hold of, and have little interest in talking to customers, especially if you insist they honor their warranty on their products. They also acted incredulous at my assertion that there was a difference between honoring a warranty and trying to buy somebody out of one. A. O. Smith is a dishonest company, which does not honor its warranties, does not stand behind its products, and does not care about its customers. Save yourself the trouble and buy another brand. A. O. Smith does not deserve to still be in business. My guess is they won't for much longer, and there is no reason to miss them.

The hybrid heat pump operating mode in my new water heater can only be switched to the all-electric operating mode for a period of 48 hours max. There is no 'winter' operating option that will let you operate in all electric mode for an indefinite period of time. The problem is, in the hybrid mode, this model water heater draws heat out of my attached garage during the winter and makes my garage 10 to 15 degrees colder than its typical wintertime indoor air temperature of 45 degrees.

While cooling my garage is a great idea in the summer, it is not what I want when the outside air temperature is in the 20 to 30 degree F range. I called the A. O. Smith technical assistance hotline for help and was told there is no way to override the 48 hour limit on the all-electric operating mode. These new, hybrid electric water heaters by A. O. Smith should not be sold in cold weather regions of the U.S. without a specific warning to consumers about the cooling effect these units will have in your house, or in your garage.

Smith can't share the venting pipe with my furnace, which goes through Chimney, but my previous water heater has been using the same venting pipe for the last 15 years without any issue. However, A. We repiped our home in January, 2017. Since our water heater was more than 18 years old, (we never had an issue with it), the company suggested that a new water heater be installed at the same time. The water heater that was sold to us was an A.O. Smith 50 gallon gas water heater. The model #GUC-50 400. The BTU'S: 40,000. The cost was $850. On the evening of October 23, 2018, we did not have any hot water. My husband attempted to relight the pilot, to no avail. The next morning, we called the re-pipe company to tell them of our problem. We were told that they do not repair the water heater, but it is under warranty. They gave us a name and phone number to call. When we called, they could not come out for at least two days, and gave us the name of another company to call. We called and were told that the tech would be out that day and would call us to let us know that time that they would be at our home.

At 8:00 pm, we still had not received a call. We then called the tech to see when he would be at our home. He said that it would be much later that evening, and not to wait up for him. (Our heater is outside and easily accessible). At approximately 11:25 pm he arrived. We heard his truck come into our driveway. At 11:50, he left. He had to replace the Chamber Temperature Sensor, made "adjustments and modifications," relit the unit and left. This cost us $195 in labor since it is not covered under the warranty.

We now know after reading so many negative reviews on this product, that this unit should not be sold to an unsuspecting public. A.O. Smith continues to put out an inferior product knowing full well what a piece of crap it is. They are "RIPPING OFF" the consumer while they laugh all the way to the bank. We know that it is only a matter of time until something else goes south with the unit. We will NOT put another dime into it. We think all of us who have posted reviews need to band together to file a class action lawsuit against A.O. Smith, and contractors who continue to push their product. Our next step is to contact the Consumer Affairs Bureau in our state (CA) and file a formal complaint against this company. We are so sorry that we were all duped and taken advantage of as consumers.

When I called AO Smith headquarters, they told me it would take three men. They also told me this issue isn’t covered under warranty because it’s the minerals in my water reacting to the aluminum rod. They say it’s environmental and they’ll sell me a rod made out of zinc for $75. Creeps! Make it right before selling it to the public.

My hot water heater is 11 months old; I want to take a sledgehammer to the unit! Brand: A.O. Smith Signature propane purchased @ Lowe's last year. The unit worked consistently up to June 2018. We had trouble with the unit; the unit would not re-light itself when it needed to and the water would start to cool down because it would not relight itself.

It had to manually be re-lighted and still has to be manually re-lighted. The top of the tank would be relatively cold and the bottom of the tank would be extremely hot. A.O. Smith warranty people called two plumbers to get a look at it. First plumber had a bull crap theory that there was not enough propane coming into the house; our propane company then installed a brand new receptor on the tank and we ruled out the first plumber's theory. This plumber was from Sears A&E and was on the phone for 45 minutes than he was in my basement. This guy was not a plumber but a professional phone talker at best. He was at my house for an hour.

Second plumber was a master plumber with 23 years of experience and had his own company. He drove 58 miles from Pittsburgh's South Side to my place. The master plumber was at my house for FIVE hours. He tried everything and finally left my house with no real solution why the propane heater was not working. However, the master plumber must have told the warranty people that the unit was not vented properly but while the master plumber was at my house, he never said a word about the structuring of the vent.

With the master plumber's theory being released to the warranty; the warranty people have "suspended" our warranty on the unit. While the master plumber did not say a word about the venting to us, A.O. Smith argued that the venting pipe has to be at a 180 degrees angle. A.O. Smith wants us to hire an HVAC guy to see if we can make a proper vent with pipe going straight up from the basement and this would not be covered with the warranty.

The master plumber's theory could be bull-crap but we are not going to prove it. The venting pipe only has one function and that is to release the carbon monoxide emission. I strongly believe A.O. Smith made some phantom observation where an excuse was made to not have their defective tank replaced. A.O. Smith is now a company that I would not purchase from, again, & would not recommend; I have lost $700 because A.O. Smith has failed to fairly take effort into standing by their equipment.

Three months after install, the tank developed a thick, milky-white goo-like substance on the bottom of the tank that was getting into the water. Was told by A.O. Smith that the soft water was attacking the aluminum anode rod and producing aluminum hydroxide.

The A.O. Smith rep explained I needed special new anode rods, which were not covered by the warranty. I explained this unit was only three months old, that the unit failed of its essential purpose if it could not correctly heat soft water and, therefore, A.O. Smith should provide these "special" anode rods free of charge. I was told that not only would A.O. Smith not provide the rods, it would not even split the cost with me and, in fact, would charge me to ship them to me in Arizona. Again, having had a number of brands of water heaters over the years in Arizona and using soft water, no other brand has this problem. A.O. Smith should ensure its water heaters can function with soft water, not produce a precipitate that potentially endangers my family's health, and shortens the expected life of the unit.

The last three units I have bought all failed in a very short period of time. The most recent one was installed on 3/5/2018 and failed yesterday 8/9/2018. We pulled the electrodes out and they where completely corroded and shorted out. AO Smith said we would have to install water softeners or reverse osmosis filtration on all the units and they will not warranty the units because our water is to hard?

I looked through all the paperwork and I did not see anything saying "Do not use with hard water". The complex was built in 1968 and we have never had this problem. I would recommend do not use their units if you have hard water, which is all of my area (Southern California). I don't think a water heater that cost just under $500 should require water filtration or a water softener just to work. I am very disappointed and I think the workmanship has just been lost, no product quality any more. I am not sure if they just got cheaper on their materials or if there is some regulation that is making them use less quality materials.

Initially the geyser worked ok for a year. Thereafter we started getting a foul smell from the water coming out from the geyser. Since I faced the problem only in the specific restroom, we felt some issue in the water supply (We recirculate STP water for flushing purposes) and hence we were looking in that angle. Also I never experienced this foul smell issue in the last 40 years with any geyser. Finally I contacted the company last month who promptly sent their technician very next day. Hence I made another complaint to the customer care. One of the offices from the company told me that you have to use the geyser regularly or at least draw some cold water through the geyser. According to him this geyser has an "Anode rod" to take care of the tank corrosion. But we were neither told by the company nor their manual tells about it at the time of purchase/installation.

A O Smith technician told that he can replace the anode rod but on cost. I refused for payment as the unit is still under warranty of 2 years and also due to their poor communication of instructions. Technician went back without replacing the spare. We would like to caution other friends who intend to go for this brand in view of the wastage of water even if the unit is not used as well as periodical replacement of anode rod. Thank you.

However this has become a pattern occurring almost once every 4 weeks; and of course the installers couldn't come out right away to make a diagnosis. A technician did come out after our home warranty company contacted them, but by the time they were able to see us we of course turned the hot water back on so they couldn't make a good diagnosis since it was worked and the technician asked that we contact them directly the next time (why is there a next time?) it happens. Which it did, and once again the technician wasn't able to come out that same day - so we're back to waiting for it to happen again.

In the interim, I contacted my home warranty company and mentioned the hot water heater hasn't operated properly since day one and maybe it's defective - at which time the warranty company mentioned the hot water heater may still be under the manufacturer's warranty. Based on the reviews I don't want this product if my hot water continues to stop without any reason.

The reps from this company are not trustworthy - Starting from the first call to inquire about the warranty, the rep told me that my water heater was out of warranty, which when I checked their website, it was not so check the website for warranty yourself. What I was then told that it would cost me $25 processing fee for a replacement water heater which was not the case, they charged me series of fees - $125 for upgrade fee, $75 for additional fee, $25 for service fee + taxes, the total came out to around $250 for a product that would cost $600 otherwise. This is a ripoff for an item under warranty.

The rep on the phone told me that I need to go to a particular location where there are several units available, I went there, and the rep on the counter told me that they are out of it and cannot replace the water heater. I argued about getting a confirmation before heading to their location and they started blaming the rep on the phone who I might have talked to. After talking to the store manager, they confirmed that they have models that I was looking for and should be able to get it to me. This again is either a deliberate effort to not replace the water heater or just a major process and communication flaw within the company. The warranty for the product is from the date of manufacture and not the date of purchase. I have never seen anything like this before. This is again cheating.

We bought 2 A. O. Smith 50 gallon hot water heaters in March of 2015. One just failed, and the other is on its last legs. Warranty is for 6 years, however that just covers the tank...installation and misc charges are extra. So, for 1000 bucks each I get hot water for, it looks like 3 years...although some people have reported theirs lasted even less time. If I exercise my warranty, I’m out another 500 bucks each for labor, with the new heaters only warrantied for whatever was left on my original purchase.

Let’s say these last another 3 years. So in the space of 6 years I will have spent $3000 for 2 crappy hot water heaters. Oh...I also am out the $1000 deductible on my homeowners insurance for water damage repair. So...it’s now $4000. I was told that these heaters have been crap ever since they moved their manufacturing base to Mexico. After having hot water heaters that lasted over 13 years in my other homes, I find this company and their hw heaters to be absolute crap. DO NOT BUY!

If you look at Consumer Reports, EVERY SINGLE WATER HEATER regardless of company or brand is junk and easily breaks. So how you do buy a water heater? Do without a water heater? Boil water instead? Also consider many THOUSANDS of these are sold without problem, so occasionally there is a bad apple. Luck of the draw. I just got a AO Smith but I had one before that lasted for years. I just converted to gas so who knows. Yes I'm nervous... but Rheem also had its share of complaints so it's all luck of the draw. I won't be getting tankless -- the more parts and components, the more can break. I do agree you should get one with the longest warranty possible.

Plumbers told me "they are all the same" but more care is taken for longer - warranty tanks -- better insulated, for example. There is a 3 year on-sight labor for repairs warranty and I bought an extended warranty from Lowe's for another 5 years on-sight (home) labor. This makes a total of 8 years home service. Common sense dictates if you get a water heater with a, for example, 3 or 6 year warranty, there is only a ONE YEAR on-sight warranty. Tank parts are cheap--it's the labor that counts. So I bought this 12-year warranty one due to its long warranty and for sure if you have no problems within 3 years you are in the clear -- chances are it's going to last many years. But I'm too scared to get tankless. I also have very hard water. So take your chances and pray. But like I said you take the same chances of any company, any brand. I also seen a trend that Rheem has issues with the pilot light has a tendency of going out. So I'm getting this one.

My experience with this company is that they do not listen to their customers when explaining an issue. From the first contact to the highest level in leadership they state a prerecorded speech at you regardless if you are speaking facts. They are all programmed to say the same thing. They will not listen to you as an individual customer. Case in point is with their warranty. Example my electric water heater had a six year warranty and was replaced after four years because of a manufacturing defect. The one that is installed as a replacement has now failed for the same problem but is now out of warranty. The warranty is not reset. You just have the remainder of the first installed. There is no way do they understand why this is unfair practice to the customer.

From bottom up they just repeat their same speech. I wonder what the CEO would say about this? They will not let your concerns be known to that level. "OUT OF WARRANTY, JUST BUY A NEW ONE". Oh, by the way, one of their escalation people hung up on me when I ask to speak with his supervisor. Rude and disrespectful! I managed to reach six levels and that was as far as I could go. I purchased an AO Smith 40 gallon electric water heater June of 2017 and had it installed. It is located in a closet in a hallway next to the master bedroom. After a little while I started to notice that I could hear the heater running with the door to the closet closed. It was even louder when I opened the door. I contacted their customer support folks and explained the problem and that I never heard the previous heater running. They did some checking and said that they didn't know why it was making noise but that they would give me a voucher to go and get two new heating elements to install.

They then proceeded to tell me how easy it was to turn off the water, drain the water heater, disconnect the 240 volt wiring to the heater, disconnect the heating elements and remove them and then install the new ones. After that I had to reconnect the 240 volt wiring. Now I'm no hot water heater repair person or an electrician. I do know that 240 volts is something the average person has no business messing around with. It will kill you if you don't know what you're doing. This heater has a 9 year warranty. So why are these people telling me to fix this? I am not happy with this company or their product. And definitely not happy with their solution to the problem.

I bought this AO Smith 40 gal hot water heater from Lowe's in October because at the time my other unit was 15 years old. Upon installing it, the heater worked fine until we had some wind from a storm come through. I woke up to find I had no hot water and after doing a little consultation with a rep from Lowe's he said it's very common and told me how to reset the pilot light, which is what went out from the wind. Once it was reset it worked fine again for a couple days and then went out again. Then it started going out several times a day even when there was no wind.

No big deal, I call Lowe's and tell them I would like to return the unit but I obviously can't return the unit until I get another one installed. I opted for a tankless system & had them install the new system. Lowe's said once I am ready to return the unit, to call the number on the side of the tank. Once I called the number on the tank, a representative from AO Smith told me they would not give me a return number because they didn't send out a service technician to fix the unit. I was not made aware this was even their procedure by anyone, including Lowe's. I asked to speak to a manager and was placed on hold and upon returning to the phone, it was the same person I had originally spoke to. He again refused to issue a return number. I still have yet to hear from a manager. I will not ever buy another unit from this company! Absolutely awful customer service and product!

I called AO Smith about getting this water heater serviced. They told me to call my local service company so, then I did. I call our local service company and they had to install 5 parts. This AO Smith water heater needed two thermostats, two heating elements, and one rod, which may I add that in only 3 years of use was severely corroded. I paid the total bill of $513.00 and submitted it to AO Smith as instructed. As of this date (1-08-18) AO SMITH WILL NOT REIMBURSE ME ($513) TO HAVE THEIR WATER HEATER WHICH IS UNDER WARRANTY REPAIRED.

AO Smith keeps making excuses why they do not have to pay for my water heater that is registered and under warranty. In my opinion, AO Smith is committing some kind of consumer fraud by offering a 5 year warranty and then not standing by their sub-standard products that they sell. That said, I have had 5 water heaters in five homes in my life and, not one of the other brand water heaters ever broke within a 15-20 year period. If AO Smith thinks they build a good product, they should stand by what they. What good is a warranty if AO Smith just ignores responsibility as the manufacturer???

I bought 3 A.O. Smith water heaters that were installed in 2006 when I built my home. In December of 2011 one of them rusted out and started leaking out the bottom. Fortunately, I had a custom pan made for them with tall sides and large volume in case of this problem. The leaking unit needed to be replaced. So I called a plumber and had them get a replacement unit. While they did replace the unit under warranty, I had to pay $225 to have a plumber install it.

Fast forward to July 2017 and the new water heater that replaced the original failed unit now has a problem. The gas regulator valve has failed. I call an A.O. Smith distributor because it should be in warranty and they tell me that it is in warranty until November of 2017, but that I must get clearance and a release number from A.O. Smith warranty department before I can get the part. So now I have been without a water heater for 2 days and I call A.O. Smith and they have me give them all the info off the water heater. I tell her that the distributor has told me the unit is in warranty until November of 2017. Seems like it should have gone until December or January since that was when it was installed but whatever.

The rep tells me that I have to test it with a Digital Multimeter to see if the millivolts are above 350 on the sensor. Every good home owner has a Digital Multimeter on hand for such occurrences. If you don't then you will now be out a service charge for an electrician to come out and do the reading for you or go purchase one like I did. Anyway, after purchasing one at Home Depot, I take the reading and it is well above 350 millivolts. So I call the customer service department back and get the same representative. She says that she will look it up to see if it is in warranty. I am sorry, but she should have done that before making me jump thru hoops to test this part!!!

She now comes back and says that they won't cover it because they don't warranty the new replacement water heater. It only carries the remainder of the warranty from the original water heater that was installed in 2006. So they will not warranty a NEW unit that was installed by a professional plumber to replace a FAILED unit. WOW! What a company. What a product! A $700 plus water heater doesn't last even 6 years.

So now I am out $39.12 for the Digital Multimeter, $170.66 for the new gas valve (the supplier was nice enough to give me the plumber's price for the part, it would have been more), and $100 for my plumber to install it for a grand total of $309.78. Not to mention all the time involved tracking the part down, running out to get the part, and lost time without hot water. When I was at the distributor picking up the part, he asked me for the serial number and model for the water heater. I gave it to him and asked if this was a common problem.

He said, "Oh yes! We practically have the part number memorized because we have to sell them so often. We have 24 in stock." I have also had other issues with the other 2 water heaters. The pilot light and gas valve have gone out on one of the other units and it had to be replaced. I would highly recommend that you do not purchase A.O. Smith water heaters. They are a crappy and do not last, and customer service is bad.

I am writing to your company to express my utmost dissatisfaction with your service and your product. Recently, we purchased a 50-gallon, electric A.O. Smith Signature Series water heater from Lowe's in Brandon, Florida. After properly installing the heater, we soon realized that we did not have hot water. We waited, but no hot water. After speaking with a representative on the phone, we were informed that it was our responsibility to test the heater's electrical voltage and element levels. Consequently, we had to purchase a digital multi-meter at our expense, only to find that the element levels produced no reading. The representative provided an authorization and directed us to retrieve new element gaskets from Lowe's, who informed us that we did not follow the proper procedure, that your company was supposed to call them to confirm the authorization.

After purchasing the element gaskets with our money, we removed the existing gaskets and soon realized why the heater failed to produce hit water. One of the elements was severely rusted and had deposit build-up and was clearly used. Nevertheless, we replaced the elements and the heater began to produce hot water. Within hours, however, the heater began leaking from the element gaskets, despite the fact that we had tightened them and re-tightened them using a gasket wrench. The leaking continued, with the water containing rust emanating from inside the heater. The entire situation made us question whether this heater was in fact used and placed back in a box, even though we paid full retail price.

After speaking with another representative from your company without resolve (we were told they would discount $100 if we hired a contractor and that's all they could do), we emptied the heater and returned it to Lowe's. It goes without saying that we took our money elsewhere and bought a different brand of heater from a different company at a different home improvement store. The entire ordeal really should have been a simple fix; we install a new heater and it works properly. But instead, we dealt with days of stress and aggravation with little help from your company.

We thought perhaps, maybe, we were just unlucky and by some chance got a bad unit, but after reading online reviews on ConsumerAffairs, we learned that your company's products consistently received the lowest ratings, and customers warned others not to purchase your water heaters after they leaked and failed to work properly. We believe that what comes around, goes around, and eventually your company's reputation will speak so loudly (and poorly), that you will be hard-pressed to find customers. You can be assured that we will tell our friends, family, and associates about our experience with your company.

I watched the contractors install one in another new house. They first put it on a platform, then hooked the inlet and outlet water lines. An electrician came the next day and completed the wiring. The customer service was great. When it wasn't heating right, they found a bad temperature controller and changed it. This happened 2 days after I moved in. There was no charge as it was under warranty. I have had it for 8 years.

It makes plenty of hot water and the recovery time is really fast, but I wish it didn't stay so warm on the outside. I finally put one of those energy blankets around it and it is not hot to the touch anymore. Also, I did have to change one of the thermocouples because it was giving a negative reading. The part only cost six dollars at Lowe's. I had to drain the tank but it still was an easy job. I am glad it was an AO Smith. I have heard of them from friends and they all like them, no breakdowns and no problems. I have never had such a good water heater. I have had 2 others in the past in 2 other houses and they both gave me problems.

Smith water heater was about 12 years old and reliable. It was in our house when we purchased the house. We had a home inspection before we purchased our house and he discovered the noise in the water heater. We waited awhile thinking the noise in the heater would affect the temperature of the water but the heater was not heating the water to our desired temp.

Smith water heater was eventually replaced by a new water heater by Westinghouse a couple months ago. The original date of purchase was written right on the tank which made the replacement easier knowing the actual age of the heater. The new water heater was recommended by our handyman who is familiar with the various brands of water heaters and he felt this new one was a better fit for our house. This new heater is more efficient and does the job it is supposed to do. The old water heater, A O Smith, was aged and not working reliably. We were afraid it would develop a leak or the bottom give out. It would have been nice not to have had to do the replacement as it was an added expense.

It has worked to heat the water for 10 years and does a fine job, it runs quietly, has a control dial to reduce the temperature of the water that is very convenient, and the 30 gallon tank provides enough water for the house. It is energy-efficient as advertised while our other unit wasn't. The delivery and installation was on time and done in a professional manner. Most of neighbors have no complaints about their water heaters either. It seems to have functioned reliably for and we rarely run out of hot water as a small family. This is important to me, as there is nothing like a cold shower. This is due in part to selecting the proper size of water heater. My fifty gallon water heater lasted 10+ years before breaking down in what I consider a little bit early, but the fix was relatively easy. I needed to replace the thermal coupler and now it continues to function flawlessly twelve years later. I am satisfied with the water heater at this point.

Also my complaint was unilaterally closed, without attending. Apart from telephonic complaint, I had also sent couple of e-mails to the AO Smith officials, and I never received any reply. Purchased a AO Smith Hybrid water heater (Model # PHPT-80) back in December 2012. At that time the cost of heater and installation was approximately $3000. Spent this type of money figuring it would save on electric, cool the garage (live in South Florida), and help go green. It came with a 10 warranty on parts and 1 year on labor. It worked well till one day it stopped functioning. That was in late January 2017.

At that time I called my installer, who came out 5 times over a period of many days calling A. O. Smith's technical department with average hold times of over 30 minutes and hold times while they either talked with another rep or read a manual. Each customer service rep had a different solution, none worked. Finally they decided that it was the main circuit board. I paid $53 to have it shipped overnight. When it didn't arrive after the second day, I called Customer Service and was told it was back-ordered. Question why didn't the service rep know this? His answer, "We don't know what parts are available in our warehouse."

The customer service rep was nice at least this time to check all South Florida distributors if they had a circuit board in stock. No one had any, which led me and my installer to think that there was a problem with this heater. Finally after all these calls and no parts available they authorized a new replacement hybrid water heater.

Still remember I paid $53 for an overnight circuit board. I asked about my $53. The service rep could not do anything about this, he would have a manager call me. The manager did call back and said that the circuit board was shipped and left at my front door by UPS. I said, "How could this be shipped when told it's not available." He had no answer. I never received it, and after hearing I was getting a replacement heater he authorized a credit of $53 dollars back to my credit card.

At this point my installer felt bad that it's been almost a week with no hot water, so he disconnected the hybrid system and modified it to work as a regular electric hot water heater. After almost 7 weeks the supplier received the replacement water heater. It was a newer model, shorter and much wider. My installer now had to remove the old heater and reinstall the new heater which had totally different connector points and needed to change drip pan from 24 inch to 30 inch. This took most of a day. Here is the kicker. The installer's bill for this including the many times he came out to initially try and fix this while working with a customers rep came to $1622.74.

So in four years I spent over $4500 for this heater. The bottom line DON'T BUY ANY HYBRID WATER HEATER UNTIL THEY INCREASE THE LABOR PART OF THE WARRANTY, like they do on central air conditioners. Remember this is a water heater with a reverse air conditioner compressor on top including all types of electronic circuit boards. I also asked for an extended warranty for labor. They said no such thing. Why? Because they know how expensive labor can be on this type of heater as you can see.

We had an A. O. Smith water heater. Through problems this water heater created it seemed the construction of the water heater is not being reviewed by the manufacturer. Inside the water heater are two rings for lifting the water heater for construction. These rings are welded and when dropped into the outer shell covering the rings can break and not noticed for about two years later after installation. This causes the inner tank leakage. Also another problem in construction is the inner glue that holds a removable spiral chamber. This becomes clogged with buildup from burn off.

This causes the burner to shut off seconds after the burner is lit after going out many times. The only way to clean this is to remove the Smith water heater and take outside the and lift the spiral out and clean. Might as well get another water heater lots of work made by the manufacturer that they won't tell the buyer about. The buyer finds out the hard way and costly way. Not a fake review, pulled the water heater out to my garage and discovered this. Too much work. Got a different brand water heater.

After waiting overnight for a call from their service tech, I finally get a call back from him and he tells me AO Smith only pays them $100 for warranty service, so all he will do is confirm the product is defective and if so, then deliver a new one, but that the warranty fee doesn't cover re-installation of the replacement unit. So I'm in $950 for a water heater that doesn't work right out of the box and now looking at having to pay to have the replacement for the defective unit installed. How is that even remotely fair to the consumer?

I've tried to escalate to the warranty company and directly to AO Smith, but got zero satisfaction with either one. The warranty company acts like it's an inconvenience for them. Maybe they should stop being a warranty company if they're not being paid enough to service the product. And how can a manufacturer expect a consumer to pay to replace a unit that was defective before it was ever even put into use? That's a cost of business that AO Smith should absorb if you're going to manufacture a defective product. What kind of quality control do you have, if any? I've finally got the installer involved making calls to the warranty company, the distributor and the manufacturer, so at least he's trying to help. They took like five or ten minutes to consult a supervisor, and they came back and said that it was not a known issue. Here is the thing, I just read a bunch of complaints here and my belief is that they are lying to me.

Smith determines that gas control valve is faulty. Cannot find the part on the west coast, has to be ordered from back east. Will take 4-5 days or can be overnighted if we pay $108. No charge for part since still under warranty. After our tenants were without water for Tuesday to Friday morning, the part is received and installed by the plumber. Cost for the plumber including shipping of part $598.

We refunded 3 days of rent to the tenants amounting to $290. Total cost to us for faulty water heater is $888 plus the original cost of $1884. Hard to tell how long the heater will no last and we are into the warranty period by 1 year and 6 months out of 6 years. Should we have any more problems we will dump this water heater and we will never buy another A. O. Smith water heater again.

The plumber we hired replaced it with a Smith hot water heater. Within 2 years, the Smith unit looked ten times worse than the one they replaced. We called the plumber and found out it was a defect in the unit and they said it was covered under a warranty. The plumber came out and replaced it, but we had to pay for labor and parts!!! Not sure why we should have to pay for the install when the unit was defective. Why isn't Smith paying for the install!! Wish I would have read the reviews on this website before it was replaced. Of course the new unit is also a Smith... when this one goes never again!! How is this company getting away with this? The warranty should cover the cost of the install!

I have had to replace one of these tanks already as it failed. It was covered by warranty. Now I have the second tank failing. But AO Smith will not extend the warranty to cover this tank because it is out of the 6 year warranty period from the date of purchase. It doesn't matter that the tank wasn't put into service until 4/27/2012. They (AO Smith) goes off of purchase date. I find it hard to comprehend why a company wouldn't stand behind their product when it is 2 months out of warranty from its original purchase date and only 4.5 years from date of being place in service.

We purchased our home from a builder, who had installed an A.O. Smith water heater with a date of 4/2012 on it. On 10/2016, the tank stopped working entirely. Two different plumbers said it was electrical, something wrong with the temperature gauge and its ability to communicate with the ejector pump on the top of the water heater. When I search for the issue online, looks like I'm not the only one with a faulty temperature gauge.

But here's the kicker: A.O. Smith gives the runaround when you try to call them on their warranty. The company makes the plumbers jump through hoops to fix the unit. All the while YOU are paying for the plumber's time when A.O. Smith knows that these temperature gauges are faulty. So you can spend time and money trying to get the warranty and a new unit. You can spend just as much time and money to get new parts for the thing or you can SAVE YOURSELF TIME AND STRESS and just buy a Bradford White. They are much more reliable and they are more likely to honor the warranties on their products. I would love to join a class action lawsuit against A.O. Smith.

I purchased a A.O. Smith State water heater in April 2012 and installed it myself. Last Friday evening I heard the sound of water running in my office and opened up the water heater closet to find water running out of the bottom of the front gas/temperature unit. I had a plumber come on Monday morning and he said it was not the tank, but the gas/temperature valve unit had failed and that I needed to call on my warranty. I have now called five times. The first time they said that since it was installed inside the home and the door did not have a closer and weather stripping that they would have to flag it as an improper installation. They said I would need to fix these items and send them pictures as I did. As you can guess by now (and I should have been smarter than to fall for their antics) once I sent them pictures, they were not right and then there are other additional issue why they could not honor their warranty.

After reading these reviews I have just decided to get a different water heater because the cost to replace the part is 1/3 of the cost to replace the unit and then I have to pay the plumber to replace the part. I agree that a class action lawsuit is in order. I am contacting the Law firm of Caddell & Chapman who was one of the firms that handled the AT&T Class Action Suit among many others. I am sending my information to Amy ** and would suggest that each of you do the same. It usually only takes a few dozen people to get the ball rolling. Replaced under warranty, but it still cost me $500 for re-install costs. 2nd one was installed 1-4-2013. I was on vacation last week in California when my father in law called telling me there was a problem. His wife was walking the dog and noticed water spewing out of the exhaust vent on the outside of my house. Father in law was notified and turned off the water ASAP. The heater had failed for the second time, same issue, inner tank had ruptured. It was leaking onto the floor but the drain was keeping up so far. Luckily he was there. If he hadn't been, my basement would have flooded disastrously. This heater also supplied my in floor radiant heat tubes. Well, it had been snowing that week and was down in the 30's temp-wise.

My father lives in my house and had no water, or heat during the next 4 days while we dealt with replacement. The original heater cost me $4500. Add the $500 for the re-install. So far, $5000. I had a POLARIS water heater for 15 years when I built the house before the Vertex's. I am the original owner of the house. So, due to the crappy product, and from the average at best experiences the distributor and installer had had with AO SMITH, and not being at home (still on vacay in California), I told the installer to put another POLARIS back in, and I would deal with AO SMITH when I returned.

I contacted AO SMITH, they asked for serial #'s and pics. I supplied them and a few other facts. The emails continued for 3 days, getting nowhere. The end was, "Too bad, so sad. Your warranty is up by 2 extra months". No acceptance for shoddy product or care. Another $4500 down the toilet. Their only help was, "We recommend you have a good maintenance schedule for your new water heater". Well, DUH. How about YOU BUILD A BETTER PRODUCT! Helped but not enough. Raised electrical bill 20-30 dollars per month, savings are there even at $2 per gallon for oil. Had to put a point of use electric water heater in line to make up the extra hot water in high demand so savings are less. The 2nd unit, a replacement 13 months old, now has a noise that the company and the technician cannot understand. Previous unit lasted nearly over 15 years in the same place. We replaced an old water heater with a new AO Smith gas water heater. About 2 weeks later the screens on our faucets were filled with green and white grit which caused low water pressure. We have 2 water heaters. The non-Smith heater does not produce grit. AO Smith had us hire a plumber to come out to tell us what to do. He said that the water heater was producing grit. AO Smith customer service says that we have to pay to replace a part because the grit is caused by our water reacting to their heater part. We have city water which has never produced this problem in any of our other water heaters. Based on the current AO Smith lack of customer service we will probably have to replace the heater at our expense. Believe me it will NOT be with an AO Smith heater.

I've installed numerous tanks in my life so I know the correct procedure. 2 months later the upper element seal blew out and flooded my house. The leak flowed as much as a garden hose would on full pressure. It shot out a foot or so from the tank. We weren't home at the time so the damage was extensive.

Called AO Smith and they said they would pay for the damages as long as it was a manufacturing defect. The tank was sent in and their testers determined that the tank was dry-fired and this caused the leak. Dry-firing is where the electricity is turned on prior to filling the tank with water. The element is burned out. They're trying to say that I improperly installed the tank. I can assure you that I did not as I've installed many tanks. These guys are just looking for an excuse to not have to pay up.

I purchased a water heater on 12/7/2010. It has a 6 year warranty. I found it rusted out in June of 2015. My plumber contacted the manufacturer for a replacement. They refused to speak to him and told him I had to call them. When I called they offered me $450 in the form of a check, not a water heater. As I did the research, I found that it was impossible to find a quality water heater for anywhere near that dollar amount. They finally agreed to $700 as I was out of town and argued. Then when I returned I learned it is very difficult to find a quality water heater and certainly harder to find an 80 gallon size.

I contacted the Attorney General in Indiana who explained I would need to post a complaint. I then called the manufacturer once more and Michele told me that they would not provide me with any further compensation. My disgust is that when I purchased the water heater, I purchased the warranty, not this form of deceit. I feel this company is not honoring what was purchased when the water heater was installed in my home.

    A. O. Smith had problems with not only their dip tubes. Their 75 gallon tanks had leakers approximately 4" from the top. As a plumbing contractor A. O. Smith fails to take into consideration we plumbers sell is time. And to take a 75 gallon water heater down a flight of stairs, connect the gas and water supply and flue. As you're filling the tank only to hear "hissing" and then water spewing out and take it back to a supply house eats all our possible profits. They offered to give me $125 which did not come close to my employees' labor rate. When their sealed combustion assembly fails they say it's out of warranty.

The defective dip tube was brought to my attention by Bradford White. The dip tube failures caused major safety issues such as a blocked T&P valve and particles blocking aerators on faucets and blocking the screen on the washing machines and causing dishwasher problems. A decent company would have let the plumbing industry know as soon as these defects became apparent.

We've had an A. O. Smith SV9570A 2062 propane hot water heater in our seasonal residence (5 months a year) for about 10 years. During this time it has functioned reasonably well, however it typically takes 30 to 45 seconds for the water to heat up. The temperature of water coming from our faucets is generally about 10-15 degrees less than the setting on the tank. Last year we were advised we needed a new thermocouple and the cost for an entire computerized thermocouple unit was $225 (we couldn't simply buy a thermocouple by itself) not counting labors far cry from the $10 it used to cost for us to buy and replace a thermocouple ourselves on older hot water heaters (NOT A. O. Smith.)

We have had to frequently flush our A. O. Smith heater to keep it from accumulating sediment (but this is apparently typical of most hot water heaters); and we had to pay another $350 for a power vent, even though the venting was literally 12 inches from the outside wall. Altogether, we're neither entirely satisfied nor entirely dissatisfied with this unit; however, we can't give it three stars, which would indicate satisfaction. We will soon be replacing this unit with a Takagi tankless heater, which has received fantastic reviews.

In short, poor performing product, terrible customer service with a warranty department that is either incompetent, poorly trained, or just doesn't care. I'm a property owner (investor) and have been a property manager for 20+ years. During this time I've had numerous problems with water heaters and have resolved numerous issues with Warranty Departments. Dealing with AO Smith warranty department was incredibly frustrating and eventually became ridiculous. As a matter of fact this is the first negative review I have ever written on any products. So for me to take the time to do this, the experience would have to have been terrible. I am writing this a couple of weeks since I've dealt with their warranty department, so I've had time to calm down a bit, but have decided to write a review in hopes of saving consumers the level of frustration I reached.

The water heater I purchased was 100 gallons. I paid $1,303.91 for the water heater. Installation is not included in the price above. One year and a month after installation the pilot kept going out continuously. Once a day, then two to three times a day, then almost every hour. I called the AO Warranty department. After providing them with Model #, Serial#, information on the water heater, where it was installed, the type of property it was installed etc... they started by sending me instruction on cleaning the flame arrestor and the filter. A day was wasted taking pictures and sending pictures to AO Smith to prove this model did not have a Flame Arrestor and did not have a filter. (Model # GCN 100 100) In the meantime tenants were without hot water.

Once they acknowledged that I was correct, they transferred me to the commercial department, telling me that because this model was 75,000 BTU's they would be the ones helping me. So now I'm speaking with a person in commercial and having to spend 15 minutes explaining the problems again, now for the third time. About 30 minutes into the conversation troubleshooting the problem, the person says, "This is a non-commercial water heater and my supervisor is getting mad at me for helping you with this, I'm going to have to transfer you back to residential." Back and forth and it was finally agreed that because the water heater was 75,000 BTU's; the commercial department could assist me with the problem.

Four days later, 18 tenants without hot water; me frustrated by being asked to run tests that I have never been asked to do so in all my experience in working with Water Heater Warranty Companies, I finally asked to speak to a supervisor. First words were "I understand this is a non-commercial water heater being used in a commercial application." I replied, "It's installed in an apartment complex, if you consider that commercial application, yes." I said this because nearly all water heater installed in residential apartments are not labeled commercial water heaters, just hold more gallons and perhaps higher BTU's. The supervisor then said, "There's nothing else we can do for you till you send in a copy of the invoice. This water heaters' warranty of 6 years changes to one year if used in commercial applications and we consider residential units commercial."

I pulled the invoice and the water heater had been installed one year one month from the date of my first call - so out of Warranty. I wish they had wiggled their way out of the Warranty with my first call. It would have saved me and my tenants a lot of frustration. If so, I could have purchased the part needed without monkeying around with a bunch of tests.

I considered purchasing the part that I believed to be the problem, about $150. While waiting in line at the plumbing supplier, I mentioned the problem a plumber. Once I mentioned it was an AO Smith water heater, five plumbers weighed in on the conversation expressing their frustration in dealing with AO Smith. They all agree with a comment a plumber made. "You're better off writing that one off as a bad decision and purchasing another water heater, I wouldn't spend another dollar with those... (profanity not allowed)." I purchased and installed another water heater. I will never purchase another AO Smith water heater again.
