After waiting months for the policy to take effect, I took my kids to the dentist, who checked to see if we were approved to be seen before the appointment started. One of my children had impacted wisdom teeth and needed surgery. We went to the referred dentist who again checked to see if we were authorized for the removal. I paid our share of over $1200 and my son had the teeth removed. Now I am told that we weren't covered after all and I have to pay the insurance amount of another $1200.

When I called I was told that I signed a form so pretty much pay up or go to collections. At this same time my daughter was being seen for numerous cavities that had been approved. Then I received a bill for all the work that had been done after my co-pay. When I tried to speak to a human at Delta they don't seem to care and recommended that I make a complaint. I did. Where each dental office told me that it could take months before they got actual approval. I received a denial in less than 2 weeks. Of course they took another month payment automatic withdrawal. So to date I have paid in excess of $5,000 for dental work that $3,000 was supposed to be covered. Had anyone simply said you need to wait another month or two to be covered I would of waited. No one seems to care. If you want to avoid the crap we just went through go to another insurance company because Delta only wants your money. They don't care about their clients.

We have had a terrible time dealing with Delta Dental. We have been given incorrect information during multiple calls, and conveniently, no notes were made in their system about the phone calls. We were clearly told that my daughter was covered under my plan, so her individual plan was not necessary. She went to the dentist and we received a bill months later because she did NOT have coverage. They have transferred us to supervisors and not explained the circumstances despite assuring us that they would, so we have had to explain the situation over and over again. They are not willing to help, but admit that the person was wrong about her being covered. They are awful!

I am writing this review as a warning to anyone considering a purchase of Delta Dental Insurance of New Jersey. I purchased a policy on 1/11/18, and decided to cancel it after learning that my dentist would work with me on the price of his services, which turned out to be lower than Delta Dental. I faxed a letter to Delta Dental requesting a cancellation of my policy on 1/30/18. I then received a letter from them explaining that my policy could NOT be cancelled until 1/31/19! So I have to keep paying $60.00 monthly for a policy I WILL NOT USE!

I called customer service on 2/16/18, to dispute this, and was basically told that I am out of luck. I mentioned that I will be eligible for Medicare in May of this year, and then was told that that qualifies as a major life event, and THEN I can cancel the policy! So until then, I am out $240.00? What's up with that? How can they just take your money like that? I was told that they have a time limit of 10 days if someone decides they don't want a purchased policy, so I guess the 18 days I waited was too long to be considered. BUYER BEWARE!

I cancelled my dental insurance with these folks as I had moved to Fla and Humana has a much better deal. I was told that probably could not stop the automatic bank account withdrawal for the coming month but would send me a refund for payment on a cancellation of the account. The rep said I would have a check in three weeks or a credit to my account. That was December 26, 2017. Today, February 13, 2018, I called them to see where the money was and was told it would be 8-10 weeks. I was told the first rep was wrong. This rep was obstinate and arrogant to boot. I talked with bank and they said they have problems with Delta on numerous occasions. I think they believe most people forget. I don’t so will file a fraud complaint against them. Quick to take your funds but not quick to refund when they overcharge a customer. That’s obscene! Be aware when doing business with this outfit.

I got a bill from my dentist for 3 fillings that I believed would be covered, at least in part, by the Delta dental plan had had and not used for the previous 10 months I had it and was paying for it. Nope. Not covered because there was a 1 yr waiting period for anything besides cleanings and exams! Is there any point in paying an entire year for something you can't use? I hate being swindled and Delta is a master at taking your money for nothing.

I am writing an article about Delta Dental insurance. This is what happened to me. I bought a policy through the ACA. I called the company, was referred to a dentist. When I learned I needed dental treatment I called Delta Dental again and asked about the cost of said treatment and got an estimate. Today, after having the work done, I was told that because I am an adult, they don't cover any dental services. I am an adult, I have no children. That is all listed in my plan. I think this is fraud. When I called the ACA people, they agreed. I cannot be the only person to have been through this.

Delta may have been the best dental carrier around but they were purchased by Horizon and now they come up with any reason not to pay. I needed a re-treatment (not uncommon) and they refused to pay my dentist for no reason. In fact, they tried to blame him for the re-treatment which could not be further from the truth. Be careful with them. They will not pay if there is any way they can point to a policy clause anywhere even it is of no relevance and refuse to pay. Be careful... Do not trust ever.

Do not waste your money on this plan (DeltaCare USA). I have never been so disappointed with an insurance plan. It is horrible. It only covers the worst facilities and doctors and most do not perform specialty work like root canals on your molars. And the ones that do, have horrendous reviews and we're miles from my residence. At the end of the day it really only covers decent dentists to get my teeth cleaned. You can pay less out of pocket to go get your teeth clean than the premiums. Hope this helps someone looking to make the right choice on dental insurance.

Got a full bill for $500 saying didn't complete waiting period. It's actually 1 year, except in certain cases in certain states if you can find and read all the fine print. While it is an insurance company, and we all know we're going to get ripped off to pay their executives and shareholders, they actively in the business of tricking you. If you choose to go with Delta Dental of Colorado, make sure you do your own research, get everything in writing, note the people you talk to (they always conveniently forget to record those conversations on the phone) and when. Done so by email and phone, with the promise that it has been done. Not so. Two providers are about the same distance from me. One, however, is an awful place. I will not go back. I would have canceled during open enrollment had they not misled me into believing the provider was changed. Multiple times I have been mislead that the change was made. How Delta Dental is still in business is beyond me! I have made one final request for the change, if not done in a few days, I will be filing a complaint with the Insurance Board in Florida. Paid for 2018 dental coverage as addition to UCare for Seniors. In searching for a provider, have found the list of providers is padded. For instance, a dentist in Minneapolis Downtown Skyway only accepts those "grandfathered in." Woman who answered the phone at a popular clinic on Snelling Avenue in St. Paul said no longer accept Civic Smiles, & was so upset at the thought of the plan that she then abruptly hung up. Worst of all, found that Hennepin County Medical Center Dental for years has only pulled teeth, & only for very poor patients. Appears as deliberate fraud to list them as a clinic for UCare subscribers to have check-ups, cleanings, fillings & oral surgery. UCare takes no responsibility, as they've contracted-out to Delta. Forget about appealing to Delta. How did they pull-off an A+ rating with the MN BBB?

I'm embarrassed when I go to the dentist because of what a pain in the neck these guys were. My dentist deals with billing insurance companies and they'd never had such a hard time with anyone else, ever. I took out a policy with Delta Dental over two years ago. I don't have issues with standard coverage. I read and understood what my coverage was. The problem and complaint that I have is with the coverage of a dental crown on a dental implant. My coverage was clear that they do not cover the cost of the implant but stated on my policy under limitation on Major Benefits - note 6. Delta Dental will not pay for implants (artificial teeth implanted into or on bone or gums), their removal or other associated procedures, but Delta Dental will credit the cost of a crown or standard complete or partial denture toward the cost of the implant associated appliance, I.e. the implant supported crown or denture.

So they refused to pay on the crown that was added to the implant. I made four calls to Delta but had no help in understanding why they are stating they do but they will not pay. They said the clause doesn't mean implants in gum or bone. I am astounded that they are totally advertising and yet not paying. I have been with the company for three years at 32.00 per month. I am totally dissatisfied and feel this company misrepresented their policy. I have canceled and considering legal actions.

I got the estimate of benefits from Delta Dental which clearly indicates on how much they are going to cover. So I got the procedure done, after I got the procedure done and my dental provider billed Delta Dental, Delta Dental denied the claim. They said I need to first go through my health insurance (nowhere was this indicated in the estimate) and if health insurance denied it, they would surely pay what was indicated in the estimate. I made many calls between my dentist and the health insurance, and finally got my health care insurance to give them a call. NOW they are claiming that the tooth was extracted so the claim was denied and they will not pay for it. Huh? this was all clearly itemized in the initial estimate request. Horrible company. Then trying to get ID's is a bit shady. They suggest you go into a dental office and give the secretaries the chore of determining a person's coverage. This to me is awful! I first entered DeltaCare (a Delta Dental product) through the Healthcare Exchange. I just went to one of their recommended dentists. Before I could be seen, I paid a $20 co-pay. Out of a $260 bill for a thorough cleaning and x-rays, the insurance paid $20! I've been referred to an endodontist for a root canal. When I called for the appointment, I was told they do not accept DeltaCare, only Delta Dental PPO. So I looked up endodontists on Delta Dental's website for their DeltaCare product. I live in a major city, and there are only 10 endodontists who accept DeltaCare -- and five of those are with "Dental Health Group" (which turns out to be Great Expressions Dental Centers). The reviews on many DeltaCare's endodontists are bad. And at least one reviewer reported that the office had to fight the insurance company for payment.

I am now actually afraid to go to one of these doctors. I mean, how bad do they have to be to accept DeltaCare when the overwhelming majority of doctors in the city will not. I've been paying on a worthless product for over a year and a half!!! I should have saved the cash and saved it toward dental work. The premiums I've been paying were apparently a giveaway to a major insurance company. I hope they enjoyed the gift.

Dental expenses are just as bad as all other medical expenses and our teeth are No exception to what is important to us. With this in mind, there are some of us who have dental problems that stemmed from childbirth. My family members have had dental problems most of their lives and I am following them with this problem. My teeth are bad, I have lost nearly half of them and when it comes to eating meals, it takes me twice as long as others as I have no chewing teeth at all. Delta Dental says it will cover only $1000.00 per year for our dental needs when some of our needs costs are insanely high.

For example, I had an examination a week ago and the end results were enough to make me sit down and take note. I need four implants, four crowns and two teeth pulled. The end bill for all of this work, over a period of time, totaled a whopping $24,087.00!!! The write off was a few thousand dollars and in the end, I would have to pay around $19,000.00 when all was said and done. And, this did not include any molar implants which normally are not done. Delta Dental only pays $1000.00?? They gladly take our money on a monthly basis but they are acutely reluctant to offer any respectable assistance to such bills as what I mentioned above. What good is this insurance company if it can't help their policyholders? Delta Dental is worthless, they are a Rip Off and should be put out of business.

Our medical insurance is great, it covers 80 percent of our medical needs and therefore, Delta Dental should follow their lead, at least to a respectable level. If not, they should be shut down completely!!! Dental care is NOT as expensive as serious medical issues and our mouths are extremely important to our health. We Need to be able to Eat!!! If I can't find a resolve, I will have no teeth left at all in five years. This is the diagnosis of my dental conditions from the professionals. I can NOT afford such dental restructuring such as those who are in, at least, the upper middle class to the wealthy. Why is the cost for dental so insanely high when there is so little to be done?? For what I need, I can go out and purchase a new vehicle for what I would have to pay for my needs.

The money we could have saved from paying for the dental insurance would have been better than paying for an insurance that treats you as a naive idiot. The company should pay for the service and be pleased to do so. By writing this I hope that others will just say no; I'll get a loan from the bank to get the operation if I need to.

I'm on Medicare and needed to apply for an individual dental insurance plan. I applied to Delta Dental. First, I printed out the application form by hand (it includes personal ID info of SS and DOB) and mailed it, certified mail, to Delta Dental on August 11, 2017. As of September 8 received no response, so called my local post office to track delivery. They said it had been delivered to Delta on August 14. So I called customer service on Sept. 8 and the rep told me he'd check with the enrollment dept. to see if they'd received it but not yet entered it. Gave him my cell phone number.

No response back so I called again on September 13 and enrolled by phone, once again giving out my PII. Once again, no response. So I called again on October 5 and spoke to a rep; She said if I'd enrolled by phone it should be in the system. She put me on hold and then said she'd put me in touch with a 'team coordinator' and we hung up. About 20 minutes later she called me back to ask what plan I wanted to enroll in. She read me the communication she'd send to the supervisor, and she did take down my comments accurately. But as of 10/20 no communication, so today I enrolled online with a Delta competitor and was able to get the transaction done in less than a half hour without putting my PII at risk.

After my first visit getting checkup and a cleaning, I started getting invoices emailed to me from Delta Dental about charges not paid. I took this information to the dentist’s office and they told me that I should NEVER be getting a bill for ANYTHING from the insurance company, and that what they were sending me bills for was procedures that are always written off, they just have to be noted on the insurance for legal reasons... But the patient is never supposed to be charged or sent invoices for these procedures and the billing person at the dentist’s office said the insurance company knows this.

I emailed Delta Dental and told them what the dentist’s billing person told me and they continued to send me bills for these procedures that had already been written off by the dentist’s office. I wrote them a letter and told them to stop sending me bills for something that was written off by the dentist or I would be talking to a lawyer. Apparently you have to threaten them with a lawyer to get them to do what they should have done in the first place! If I could choose again, I'd rather go without insurance at all. They are horrible with customer service, responding to issues in a timely manner or at all, & all they want to do is take your money. They had no problem taking my monthly payment without providing the services that I am entitled to all because of a 'system error.' For MONTHS I went paying my monthly premium but was denied the use of my policy. I spend months attempting to get it fixed, being on hold for over 45 minutes at a time, and somehow the supervisors were never available or they were the wrong team to handle my issue.

After everything NOT being resolved, not getting any services, and continuously paying my premium, I decided to cancel my useless policy. Yet now after all these months of frustration, I get sent a bill for the months AFTER I canceled my policy. No representatives EVER followed up with my complaints, my concerns, or the ineffectiveness of their system. All they cared was getting their payment but not bothering to make sure their customers get what they paid for. I have already put in a complaint with the BBB, but honestly I wish I never got involved with DeltaCareUSA. I ended up paying for another dentist out of pocket in addition to the monthly premiums I paid and never used.

I went to a dentist for work under the impression that my insurance covered at least some of the costs. I have gotten porcelain crowns before, never had issues with insurance paying. This time the dentist office charged me FULL price, and then some. If coverage changed this much, I should have been notified, but I wasn't. Suffice it to say, I am not happy with the coverage and dentist office. I feel like this is a big scam between insurance and dentist.

Long story short, I have submitted claims twice, was told by a rep a few months ago that my orthodontist needed to have some sort of number which he does not. They then contacted my orthodontist directly. I called Delta today, and guess what? They now have NO CLAIM ON FILE. It is as if I never submitted anything. To say that I am furious is an understatement. Thieves and false advertising. I am going to try calling again to see if a different rep might be more helpful and will most likely try submitting a claim a third time but I am not hopeful. I was thrilled when Kaiser started offering dental insurance for my CalPers medicare advantage plan. I signed up immediately and paid $14 a month for several months, then I found out what a fraud is. It is not insurance. DeltaCare is just a dental discount plan. They offer you free exam, x-rays and cleaning and then there is a 'discounted list' for other benefits, but the dentists on their list are all corporate chains and they will not do the free cleaning. They want to upsell you to a $1,000 periodontal cleaning and DeltaCare doesn't care one bit. They get their premium so they don't care how badly these dentists rip you off.

My premium is twice what Costco charges for a virtually identical plan. It's less than $80 a year through Costco and close to $180 for the Kaiser plan. Neither plan is worth even $50 a year. It's just an invitation to getting ripped off badly by these shyster dentists. Don't waste your money or your time with these plans. If you see 'DeltaCare' run away as fast as you can.

My husband works for the state of Illinois for almost 30 years and retired five years ago. This is the first time that he has had to have any work done. He needs a crown. However AR dentist and Branson West Missouri Dr. ** and any other dentists are refusing to wait a year or more for their payment from Delta Dental of Illinois, therefore they're requesting that we pay upfront for any work done and then the check will be mailed to the dentist and the dentist will reimbursed us. Why should the check be sent to the dentist if we're paying it out of our own pocket. Is this the way that Delta Dental in the state of Illinois are keeping things off the books that there's trouble like if I did this I would be in prison for insurance fraud.

They take money out of my husband's monthly retirement check for the dental insurance and Illinois is to pay their part. They want almost $1,000 upfront for this crown. We're on a fixed income and I am disabled so exactly how we supposed to come up with the money that the state of Illinois is supposed to be responsible for and why is the check being sent to the dentist and then we wait for the dentist to reimburse us $2,000. As far as I'm concerned the dentist hasn't anything to do with this since we're having to pay upfront because of this situation then Delta Dental should be sending us a check. Of course we'll be waiting almost 2 years just like everybody else.

When is this going to stop. When is enough enough. We need someone to step in and represent us and stop this insurance fraud. Delta Dental of Missouri Illinois of the USA is the worst experience with dentist I've ever experienced in my life!!! First we were told by Delta Dental that the dentist could not request for us to pay that money upfront because they have a contract with the state of Illinois. Then we're told, "Oh yes" they can request it and if there's nothing we could do about it. So what's going on people. If we had $1,000 hanging around for crown, we sure wouldn't be adding this negative review.

Plates are bad for the existing teeth that they attach to and slowly ruin them also causing these teeth to be pulled and thus a larger plate made and more teeth ruined and pulled, until eventually the patient is wearing dentures. In the long run that costs more than just replacing the original lost or pulled tooth with an implant. Less money and pain and suffering for the patient, their client. No one wins.

My son is 8 and they assigned him the same dentist as myself, I am 32. When I asked why he was not assigned to a pediatric dentist they told me their insurance policy considers children over the age of 7 to be an adult and do not need to see a pediatric dentist! I was floored, since when is an 8 year old an adult. So I made the appointment with the dentist they assigned him to. I was told they could give me a referral to a pediatric dentist. Which they did, however, the HMO doesn't cover any pediatric dentists in the area. Not even the pediatric dentist that is in the same company/network as the one he was assigned to.

Again I make another appointment as Delta Dental tells me again, he must go to the assigned dentist. At this appointment they are supposed to fill a cavity and he is turned away because he needs to go to a pediatric dentist. If you are counting that is 3 times I had to take off work and to take him to a dentist. Could Delta Dental make this any harder. Now my child has still not been treated by a dentist and Delta Dental still gets paid out of my paycheck every other week! Worst insurance ever!!! Do not use them! Save yourself the headache!

It is now May and I've called them 7 times or more and each time they tell me the claim has been resubmitted to wait up to 30 days. I again submitted my claims for services rendered on Jan 13th 2017. After multiple telephone calls and multiple letters sent for reimbursement, I finally received 692.50. I never had any implants done I cannot believe what I am reading and this company will do anything not to reimburse its customers. I personally believe for the cost of implants in the USA are out of touch with our citizens in the USA. Its so expensive for American Citizens living on a fixed income such as SSI. I felt I could have so much more dental work done in Mexico at a more moderate price that I went to Mexico to have the procedure done. To say that I have had this procedure done in the past is a complete lie. It appears to me that once these insurance company get their money they refuse to return it to the consumer. I do not know if I had these services rendered in the USA would my dentist still have these same issues of being reimbursed. Maybe there is kickbacks. The dentist industry is one of the biggest rip-off business in today's marketplace. I've read the Yelp reviews on new patients signing up with an HMO plan -- the dental office Administrator or doctor is willing to accept your insurance plan only to try to rip you off by telling you that you have a lot of cavities; need a root canal; or by charging inflated rates for getting your teeth fixed. This actually happened to me at a dental office this week -- I had only one cavity and they wanted to me to get a cap at $600. I said no, I would just like to have the cavity filled... and then when it came to get my teeth cleaned the dental assistant only polished my teeth (when I should have received a regular teeth cleaning and then the polishing would follow afterwards).

FYI: The place where I was being forced to buy services I wasn't interested in and the incomplete teeth cleaning had a 4.5 Star Rating??? Well the best way to stop these crooks is to require a survey to be attached to the paperwork of each office visit for first time dental members that must be submitted along with the work that was performed to the insurance company before the dental office can be paid. PLEASE help these dental insurance companies help stop the fraud, the lies, and bad behavior that is ongoing with their dental vendors... I'm afraid the numbers are over 50% of misconduct going on.

I spent hours on the phone with customer service and every representative was giving me different explanation of why my claim was not processed. Finally after 2 years, they denied my claims with some bogus explanations. Delta Dental is just taking advantage of the fact that it's international clinic. So, out of the $15,000 I have spent in the international clinic, this insurance does not want to pay 13% of the cost! The clinics in US estimated the entire work to $50K! Ridiculous. They were able to see that I was up to date with all of my payments. They both (one associate) another a manager - said they would correct the info and resubmit the claim. I was told by the manager that nobody had scanned in my claim and submitted the info. Recently, I received a letter saying that I was denied again because lack of payment. Apparently no one corrected my account. I have paid for all of the months that I had coverage. I have made numerous phone calls and spent countless hours trying to get this corrected. My dentist said that they want me to pay out of pocket ASAP. I am getting very frustrated trying to get someone to correctly take care of this.

This company is a scam. I signed up for insurance through the Marketplace Exchange back in 2015. I thoroughly reviewed all documentation about what procedures were covered and thought I got a good plan. Although some of the more serious procedures only covered 50% (Root Canals and Extractions), it did seem to cover about 80% of the other procedures. When I had to have 2 teeth removed last year, come to find out, they would not cover the extractions at all. There was a clause in my policy that stated they only covered extractions up until the age of 19! I'm a 40 year old man! At no point in my signing up with this policy did anyone even mention this nor did anyone catch the fact that this policy would be useless to me. When I had to have a root canal, the same age limit was in effect. I have cancelled my policy with these crooks and I would recommend to anyone NEVER to choose Delta Dental as their insurance provider.

I can only pray that our new President can find a way to fix this Industry as a whole. DD's 'fine print' excludes items that most dentists will perform as part of your routine dental health. This results in getting bills after the fact for things that should have been covered by the insurance. I can see I am in good company as every other rating for DD is one star like mine for the same reason. It is as low as you can go and still give a rating.

I am incredibly upset with Delta Dental. We have double coverage (two policies). I checked before my husband had treatment and was told it was a covered expense. My husband had implants for three teeth. We were required to pay up front for them. We did so as he had gone quite some time without those teeth. It was hard for him to eat, he kept biting his tongue. So, we went and had the teeth (implants) done. The cost was $12,000. We worked for over a year trying to get payment for this. We were told it was denied. Filed against the decision and it came back they would not pay.

He had a partial made within the 5-year time frame so this was not covered. Mind you the implant that never fit, was remade and he was told, "That is the best you are gonna get." He ended up throwing it away. The insurance company had paid $800 to the dentist for this sub standard partial so they denied us reimbursement for $12,000. Such bad customer service. The response was that the dental provider, may give the discount at their discretion & is under no requirement to submit any patient info or claims to Delta Dental. When I attempted to cancel the plan, I was told that since I got it through Healthcare.gov, I could only cancel through them.

I made 5 separate attempts, in writing, mail, e-mail and telephone, to cancel with Delta. My company switched to Delta Dental in January of this year in which Delta should have taken over the claim and paid the dentist. It is now the end of June and still no payment has been made by Delta. The dentist's office has had to resubmit the same claim information multiple, multiple times and the claim keeps getting denied. Either no one at this company is smart enough to get this issue resolved or it's a tactic to delay payment (which is my guess).

I have read reviews about this type of situation and one person was denied because they delayed the claim process so long that they exceeded the time period for his claim. My advice is to stay on top of them and insist on speaking to a supervisor or someone who can resolve the issue. I have since filed a grievance with Delta and will be contacting the Better Business Bureau and other agencies to report this fraudulent practice of Delta Dental. We just moved to Florida a year ago, and shopped the market place for health insurance and dental insurance. We currently carry DeltaCare. We pay the monthly premiums to have insurance. The health insurance is expensive but worth every penny spent on it, but the dental for a lack of better words, sucks. We have had DeltaCare since the beginning of this year, 2016. In March we were in an emergency to get our 10-year old daughter to the dentist, because she had an abscess above a tooth. Come to find out our general practitioner dentist, which is assigned to us through DeltaCare, does not see children under the age of 14. They called their sister office, once again to find out they do not see children under 14 there either.

I had to make a decision on getting my daughter seen, therefore I scheduled an appointment with a provider and paid 100% out of my own pocket for our visit. I assumed this would be the case, but my daughter's health and safety come first! After all it was an emergency that needed to be taken care of. The people at that dental office were very caring and sympathetic to my needs. They specialize in children and unfortunately I did have to pay full price, they did give me a discount on the anesthesia.

After this situation I promptly got a hold of healthcare marketplace to find out whether or not I had a qualifying event on my hands. The fact that the dental offices within my network do not see children under the age of 14 should be considered a qualifying event to allow me to switch insurances. Unfortunately, it does not.

I then proceeded to call DeltaCare to explain to them the situation about my network's general practitioners and not seeing children, under 14! The person that I spoke to at DeltaCare proceeded to tell me that I am more than welcome to find another provider within my network. She explained to me how to pick out a specific 'pediatric' dentist that would accept my insurance. Not very helpful, expected me to do all the work, especially since I feel like they led me astray and they should fix it!

I followed their guidelines, printed off the list of providers, and proceeded to call every single provider on the list. The majority of them stated they were not 'in network', that Delta's computer systems were not up to date with the providers. Some of them stated they only see children OVER the age of 12?!?! Finally, about the 7th provider down the list I found a 1-800 number to a dental office that said they do see all children and our insurance is acceptable. I scheduled an appointment, waited for 2 months, which brings me to today.

I drove an hour to another town to get my daughter to the only dental office that sees children within my network, to find out at the time of the appointment that since she is over the age of 5 she is considered out of network. WHAT!!??!!?? And that I "called the 800 number and they don't know"...WHAT!?!?!? This whole situation is absolutely and completely upsetting. It makes no sense!

Why do insurance companies and the marketplace not have their computers current on the most up to date information??? This is only one of the many problems with insurance. The fees that any person pays out monthly to these companies that lack information and knowledge. Lack compassionate people who give a damn and are willing to help out when a customer calls. WHY??? My words of advise to anyone reading this, STAY AWAY FROM DELTA!

I've used Delta Dental for years and have had little to no problems. However, the DeltaCare policy, which my company switched to, is a nightmare to navigate. If you want a basic dental cleaning, you must visit your "primary" dentist which, DeltaCare has chosen for you. In my case, the dentist chosen for me was nearly an hour away. You are able to change your "primary" dentist, but that takes 1 month to take effect. Within that one month, you are not covered by anyone but the primary.

As for my child, who is less than 2-years old, he must have a referral (from the same "primary" an hour away). To get the referral, the primary must see the child, then say "Yes, he's too young" at which point you don't have a choice as to whom they refer you to. Once you get the referral, it's another month before he can see the referred dentist. It's my opinion that DeltaCare imposes this 1-month referral policy NOT due to some technical limitation, but to delay any coverage that they may be responsible for paying. In short, it's simpler, faster and cheaper to pay out of pocket for a dental cleaning than it is to use DeltaCare USA from Delta Dental.

I went on an extended trip overseas and when I got home, I found dental bills, as usual, where my claim was denied. I called Delta. I was told my policy had been canceled due to non-payment of premiums. I asked, "How can that be? I have automatic payment through my checking acct." I was told that they had stopped taking payment last December and they had no responsibility to tell me they had not taken my payment and none to alert me to the fact they were canceling my policy. They said the Affordable Care Act forced them to drop me as I didn't pay.

I called the Affordable Care Act Exchange and they said they have had no contact with Delta Dental and as far as they are concerned, my dental insurance is still in force. In calling back to Delta Dental, they just insisted it was my duty to examine my bank statement every month to make sure they really did take my payment and they did not accept obligation to let me know I was in arrears and they were canceling my policy. As I talked to different people each time, I assume that is the line they are taught. I would like possible clients for Delta Dental to be aware of the company practices.

Two months after visiting the dentist, filing the claim form, and reviewing the website, I see that Delta Dental notified my account as "Paid". The only judgement I can make from proof and experience is that Delta Dental and their home office in Wisconsin is a fraudulent and should be shut down.

In my case it was a simple bridge, one just like I had before, which cost me $350.00. Monarch bill them $900.00 plus (my limit was $1000.00). I had to pay the same amount. Go figure. My opinion is that someone in the city got paid to change plans. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

My son's dad works for a large global corporation. The company just changed to Delta Dental the first of this year (2016). In the meantime, our 14 year old just got his braces off last month after having them on for 2 years. He was born missing his adult upper incisors which means he has his 2 front teeth and no teeth on either side. The braces have served their purpose of providing adequate space for placing some sort of artificial teeth until his bones have matured for implants. The dentist sent in for pre-authorization of MD bridges and it was sent back denied because of his age. I understand there are guidelines which need to be followed, but there also has to be exceptions to those guidelines because not everyone develops at the same rate, nor is every situation textbook.

I called the ins. co and they suggested the dentist send in an appeal because the 2nd time it is submitted, it will then be reviewed by a "dental consultant". So we sent in the appeal explaining that his teeth are congenitally missing and needs them to be able to function properly. Again, it was denied because he is not 16. Now, I'm not sure why he would have to wait until he is 16 to be allowed to function properly, but I was very disheartened by this. So, I called Delta again and again was told to file a 2nd appeal within 60 days of the first one. The cost for the bridges is $5,000 and who really can afford that? I am not asking for anything fancy or upscale, just simply something that can be placed in the spaces so the $4,000 spent on braces is for nothing due to the spaces closing. Besides the fact he is 14 and has 2 years to wait before he is "of age" to be allowed to function normally.

I will be sending complaints into his dad's company headquarters and whoever else needs to see this in hopes that they will drop Delta as their Dental insurance. It's sad that I am reading all the bad reviews and seeing what this is doing to many people. Hoovers.com shows Delta of Virginia as having less than 200 employees and a revenue of $0.16M. What is this telling us?

Then I get bill with a "balance forward" on it totaling $41.06... Called to verify my cancellation, was told to ignore bill notices until system catches up. Fine. Got up to one letter EVERY week for one month until they did the same thing for the next month. Now we are up to $61.59...

Called again and was told that the 1st person didn't really do anything, just basically assumed the problem would take care of itself since I cancelled. THIS time she says, they are sending an email to the billing department directly. Because of course the billing department and the customer service department have to be completely BLIND to what each is seeing on their screens right? Fine. Since they effectively said, "the problem is on their end", and I asked if I could get their email myself so that I would no longer need to call customer service for a problem they can't fix, they said it was only for internal purposes... Fine.

Got another bill. We are now up to $82.12 folks. Two months after signing up and cancelling. Absolute worst ** experience over a cancelled service I have ever had. Will update this after I call tomorrow. At this point I think they ought to pay ME for over 2+ hours of dealing with this and having to keep a folder record just for this issue. Come October, we're approved for bridges, fillings, and a crown. They approved all the work and stated they would pay 50% of the costs. We took out a loan for the other 50%.

December came and I cancelled our coverage for 2015. Now, they're claiming I never made any payments and they refuse to pay what they already promised to. They've sent it on to collections, even though I tried to work with them to figure out what bills I supposedly didn't pay--instead of assistance, customer service gave me attitudes. They claim I never paid. I know I did. They never processed any of my payments. Delta Dental is the worst to deal with and according to all the reports I am reading on here it seems I am not the only one experiencing their lack of follow up/follow through. To make a long story (over 4 months) short, I will say that Delta Dental will not follow up on anything sent to their customer service team. I and my dentist submitted an estimation of procedure costs with an explanation of why this was necessary, x-rays, previous estimation of benefits from Delta, etc. I was fighting a claim that they did not want to cover because they said it was a medical benefit. I even sent a letter from my medical insurance carrier telling why this was not medical and that medical would not pay for it. All this information was sent to Delta Dental of Michigan at the address on their website, as well as given to me per a customer service rep.

To date I still have not heard from Delta Dental on this and they claim they did not receive my information I mailed over 2 months ago. I asked if I could email it or fax it and they said no, only mail. (Easier for them to say they didn't get it this way). Anyway, when I call customer service to follow up with a manager, there is never one available. I just want to talk to a claims manager to figure out what is going on and why they are denying coverage for a grafting procedure that is clearly a dental procedure. Delta Dental is a waste of money. Denial of Claim by Delta Dental of Missouri for crowns on front lower anterior teeth per a posterior x-ray. Denied as attrition. When in fact both upper and lower teeth were fractured and broken because of blunt force trauma. Delta Dental had no problem in providing veneers for upper anterior teeth not once but twice, yet even after pictures of the lower anterior front teeth clearly indicate fracture as the fracture lines on each of the three teeth in question are on different angles and planes. Fracture of upper and lower anterior incisors happened by way of blunt force trauma as a metal rack fell from a high shelf and struck and fractured both upper four and lower five front anterior teeth in the mid 1970's. Composite material was applied and shaped to upper and lower teeth by Dr Joseph ** in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

On or around mid 1980's Dr Mark ** DDS addressed the upper teeth because the composite material was breaking off. He applied veneers to the four upper teeth. The lower teeth had composite and held up better than the upper teeth therefore dental treatment was not needed at the time. In the mid 2000's Dr. ** had to replace the old upper veneers that Dr Mark had installed. The composite on the lower teeth was coming off yet I had no pain. It was not until 2014 and 2015 that I noted that all the composite had disappeared and I had dentin exposure. In late 2015 the dentin exposure caused me to have pain to heat, cold, and chemical's i.e. vinegar's and citrus. I am filing this grievance because I fractured my teeth. If in fact this was attrition as Delta Dental of Missouri claims there would most certainly be a pattern of wear around the radius of the front anterior teeth.

I sent pictures to Delta Dental of my lower front anterior teeth as evidence that in fact my teeth were fractured as the broken fracture lines were different with each tooth and clearly did not follow a wear pattern that indicated attrition. Please note Delta Dental initially would not cover any of my lower anterior teeth. They re-reviewed the posterior x-rays and then decided to cover two of the five fractured teeth yet denied the three remaining teeth. After that denial is when I sent in three photo's of my lower teeth and my four veneers that included my bite showing that my lower teeth do not even make contact with my upper teeth. I pay premium for this insurance and I expect all of my lower teeth to be addressed with the application of crowns on all five lower anterior teeth.

To begin with, I was told that I would have to pay the full amount then send a copy of the receipt or Delta Dental for out of network reimbursement. After I did this, nothing happened. I was then told an additional form was needed. I filled that out and sent it in. That form asked for the dentist's social security number which I didn't have. Since I was being reimbursed and the dentist was not being paid, I didn't think they needed that information. When I didn't hear back from them I called Delta Dental customer service and was told that if every line on the form isn't filled in they just throw them away as incomplete forms. I then made the forms out again and took them to my dentist to be completed and sent in.

I still didn't hear back from Delta Dental so I called again. The agent said she needed an additional piece of information clarified and would call my dentist to get it. Two weeks later, she called me back and said she didn't have the dentist's number. I called and left her the number. Then I get 12 explanation of benefits forms in the mail on the same day. They all said they were rejected because "subscriber ID number has not been found". I called customer service back but could not get in touch that agent/her so I spoke to a different one. She said that a social security number was used on the form sent in. I checked with the dental office and found that the correct number was the one sent in, not a social security number.

Delta Dental said they could not just correct the number even if they had a claim number and would need them to be sent in again. This time they were faxed in and the fax receipt showed the correct number and the fax was received by Delta Dental. They keep giving faulty excuses and my claims are still unpaid. I guess I'll have to sent all the information in to the insurance commissioner's office for them to investigate. I know one thing: I'll NEVER recommend Delta Dental to anyone.

Now they say I have to go to Emergency dental to get a refund. Emergency dental says they have not received anything from Delta and their office manager refused to return my phone calls. Delta refused service when in fact I had coverage with them for this. They told me I only should have paid 71.50 total for the visit. Emergency dental is one of their preferred providers. I still have pain and swelling in the area where the tooth was pulled. I still have trouble eating and sleeping because of this but I have no money and no reliable insurance to go to a dentist to see if there is still a piece of the tooth left in there or what is causing the pain. I have complained to my HR dept and to Delta with no resolution.

NOWHERE in the policy did it state he had to be 16 (he was almost 16, one month prior to his b-day) and now it's 11 months later and I find out that Delta Denied the claim just because he was 15 and not 16. This to me is fraud, misleading, and absolutely illegal. Now, I am told I will have to pay $930 all because they refuse to pay for it. They paid for part of the bridge but not the part that keeps the freaking thing in place? WHAT?! How is it supposed to stay in place if it doesn't have the clamp part to it? The dentist office submitted a pre authorization, and I was told I owed x amount of dollars - which I paid. But, apparently by the time my claim was submitted, this dentist was no longer in network, and my insurance only paid 40% (about $300). Now I'm stuck with another $300 bill.

I believe Delta Dental USA is deliberately having their mail sent to a different address because too many people have had this same problem, causing delays in dental treatment. I never got my dental treatment because by the time it finally got approved, it got canceled by Kaiser Permanente because Kaiser says I no longer qualify for dental work. RED FLAG. Recently I contacted Delta Dental and asked them to please cancel my policy because the plan was costing me more than they were paying. I pay $45.16 a month for coverage. My last dental bill was $285.00, Delta Dental paid $104.00. If you take the $181.00 that I paid, and add 6 months at $45.16 (because you're only allowed a cleaning every 6 months), that comes to $451.96. Without coverage through Delta Dental I would have saved $166.96. It is costing me more to have Delta Dental, thus my asking for them to cancel my policy. I emailed them 2 different times and each time it was denied my request stating my policy will be canceled Nov. 30th. That is another $180.64 from now.

Does anyone know if my credit rating would be affected if I canceled the monthly payment to my debit card? I have an excellent rating and don't want to compromise that. The stop fee is a one time of $35.00. The last line of the last denial was, "We value your business and look forward to assisting you with your oral health needs." Form letter or what.

I have had Delta Dental a few years and previously 3 other crowns were covered by them w/o problem. In the spring I began experiencing frequent pain while chewing as well as hot and cold sensitivity, telling me it was finally time to address the two teeth causing the problem. On my business trip overseas in June, I was forced to eat using only the right side for chewing. The affected teeth both had fractures that could be observed in the mirror. In June, I had crowns placed on these two teeth. Delta has refused to pay saying there was insufficient loss of tooth structure due to caries/fracture.

Apparently the X-ray didn't show the crack (there were significant fillings in the teeth which would have obscured the appearance of any fractures in the X-ray). The dentist did not take any optical photos. However, this is no different than the other cases which Delta did cover in previous years. In all cases a doctor's commentary was provided with the X-rays. I don't know what is different this time, other than I am now 50 and somebody had complained in social media that Delta refuses to pay for crowns at age 50 and over. In this case my dentist has appealed 2x and been denied 2x. I have had to pay the full cost for these two crowns ($2k). I am now trying to appeal a 3rd time through a 3rd party and will consider further action should my case be denied again. This is a valid claim that I have paid to have coverage for and I will pursue every avenue available for restitution. I hope I don't have to go that far.

This complaint is about Delta Dental's refusal to pay a reasonable claim that does follow necessary requirements. In March 2015, I went into the dentist to get a crown put in. I was told there were already so many fillings in the tooth that there was barely any tooth left and a crown was the only option. This was not the first crown I have had done and never had an issue with Delta Dental paying previously for the crowns. The tooth was causing severe pain while chewing and extreme sensitivity to cold and air. I received an EOB in June 2015 that my claim had been denied. The claim was resubmitted immediately and now, August 2015 has been denied again. The causes for denial were that there was not an "extensive loss of tooth structure due to caries and or/fractures." The reason for fillings are cavities, right? There was very minimal tooth left, just fillings.

I called my dentist when I received the first EOB asking what was going on and they said they didn't know why it would have been denied because everything had been sent to Delta Dental, so they should be able to see simply from the x-rays that a crown needed to be done. Besides that, the sensitivity and pain were noted and they agreed to resubmit my claim. Now it has been denied again for no reasonable explanation. Having a tooth that is mostly fillings would most definitely be "extensive loss of tooth structure." I have been informed that Delta Dental denies many claims that should rightfully be paid. This one is substantial - $1,102.

Because my husband was laid off and we needed dental insurance, I very stupidly signed up with Delta Care USA, which is part of Delta Dental. It should have been a warning when I had so much trouble signing up. I filled out my form and sent it to the address on their site. When I never heard from them, I called and they said I sent it to the wrong address for new accounts. I then asked them to refund the money which they did by check, and I paid for the insurance by credit card over the phone.

Unknown to me, one of their idiot employees created two separate accounts for me, one from the check they claimed they refunded, and then a second one when I paid by credit card. Because of this, and because they never corrected this and merged the accounts, anytime we had service done and it was sent to the original account, it showed that we never paid our premium, but that was because the premium (credit card payment) was made to the second acct.

It has been a year now and I am STILL trying to get them to pay a $170.00 dental bill! Every time I call I get a new story; first it was that their computers were being redone, then it was that I didn't follow proper procedure (my dentist says we did), and now the latest one is that the bills keep going to the old account. I already told my credit card company that if they try billing my card for the next years' renewal, that it is fraud (I wouldn't put it past them to try that). So now, with my husband out of work for 2 years, how do I pay this bill when we are barely making utility bills?

Aside from the enormous hassles I endured just trying to be enrolled (and keep in mind I was already logged in as a patient with the VA years ago) this is pure crap! It is so lame it is hard to know where to start. I opted for the Metropolitan Ins Co. branch of VADIP - only because I had worked for the MET many many years ago. When I was told the basics of the plan - I noticed that it differed from that of the VA branch - Delta Dental. When I asked Delta Dental rep what were the real differences between the programs offered by both MET and Delta the answer was "DUH - I don't know - gotta call the Met." When I asked the Met rep what were the differences in benefits etc - I got the same lame answer - "not a clue!"

I chose the basic plan (the Met offered two plans) as I had no idea of the problems I later was advised of. I was a bit shocked at the expense involved and decided to get another dentist's opinion to make sure everything was on the up and up. That was when I was told that my yearly MAX insurance benefits were less that than JUST my cost of about half of the expenses involved. Not having used any dental services for a long time - I was unaware of the VERY pricy charges for even basic jobs.

I then contacted the Met and asked if I could change my plan to the higher priced premiums that had better coverage and a higher annual cap. I was told it was OK and would be changed over to plan B. (BTW these companies don't even give you an ID card to prove you are insured)! I then contacted my cardiologist to make some necessary coordination plans due to complications I have as a heart patient on a drug that prevents blood clotting.

When I was shown the charges by the 2nd dentist - it didn't look right - way too high co-pays and other problems. I contacted the Met and asked why my request for my plan up date had not been activated and they told me it was a mistake - that I wasn't allowed to change coverages. I had no claims and had already paid several months of premiums - as I had so many complications in my schedule with other medical problems.

I was really angry - as I had not been advised or warned of this VERY expensive mistake I made in good faith! I obviously had no way of knowing what substantial procedures would be found by the dentists. NOW I have to wait almost a full year FULL year to change my plan so it is affordable for me.. Why my own government did not see fit to WARN us that the WRONG choice of plans would LOCK US IN and could cost us thousands more out of pocket was unconscionable! So now I am locked into a plan that will cost me potentially thousands more out of pocket - and was never advised.

Cheap shot! At present - my yearly cap will pay for only my wisdom teeth extraction and maybe a filling and I still have crowns and root canals etc that need to be done. Obama has no problem with spending a TRILLION dollars of OUR tax dollars to murder millions of innocent civilians and destroy entire nations that have never been a threat to America in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER - but he won't pay - 'pennies' our vets for dental work.

Learn from my bad experience. DO NOT chose a plan UNTIL you have had a firm estimate of what your dental expenses will be. The incompetents at these insurance mills WILL NOT advise you about this VERY important decision. Thanks a lot for your compassion and help for veterans who served when there was still some honor and REAL enemies. I trained your grandfathers - but I'm not worth taking care of now!

My family of three has had Delta Dental (NE & MA) through employer for over 10 years. When my COBRA ran out in October 2014 I chose to purchase a policy from Delta Dental of Illinois for about the same price as my COBRA with added cost of $50 annual deductible for each family member. One day after I enrolled I emailed over a pdf showing documentation of over 10 years continuous DDIL dental insurance for my family with coverage at least as good (in fact much better) than the new policy. Days later I got an email from DDIL that based on previous coverage, waiting periods for all three member were waived.

Fast forward 5 weeks and my son has a filling fall out. It gets repaired by our dentist (DDIL Premier provider btw) and he submits bill. 45 day after the service (and only after dentist resubmitted the bill) I get an EOB providing a $45 discount but denying the remaining $245 due to not fulfilling 6-month waiting period. Call DDIL and they find the email that I sent and apologize. It is now February 2015 and the dentist has not received a dime and a new EOB has not been sent.

In December and early January 2015 all three of us go to our dentist for regular 6-month exams, cleaning and it was time for xrays. February 7, 2015 EOBs for the three visits come via email and web providing only $140 of coverage while we are stuck with $360 bill payable our dentist- for preventative treatment that was supposed to be covered 100% after the $150 total family deductible. And if DDIL had properly taken care of the bill for my son's filling in November, his $50 deductible should already be paid for. And after all this, our dentist has not received a dime from DDIL though website says paid for all claims.

Now that I actually have EOBs it appears that the 100% preventative care coverage after $50 deductible only applies to work done by a DDIL PPO provider and that if you use an other provider including a DD Premier, the plan only pays 100% of the amount that the PPO allows. You are stuck with remainder. So we get a bill for $360 for three cleanings, exams, and xrays. Our dentist would gladly accept this in cash without insurance! Total in only 5 months of coverage including premiums, one filling and three preventative visits have cost us the grand total of $1232! For 12 months, adding only three more preventative visits, this project's out to $2260!

Needless to say, I will be cancelling policy Monday morning (already talked to Discover Card and they will NOT pay any further monthly payments without my authorization! ) and will purchase a new policy from Cigna for $30 less a month and guaranteed 100% no deductible preventative coverage!

We elected to discontinue dental insurance coverage through AARP and Delta Dental based upon a close scrutiny of Delta Dental Coverage policies and reimbursement practices. There is simply no way an individual can secure an appropriate return on his/her premium payment through the course of regular dental procedures. One question remains, who "cashes in" on the premium surplus payments?? Delta Dental or AARP?? Regardless, we are deeply disappointed with AARP for promoting this coverage to its core membership of 65+ year old individuals. This dental insurance plan is not reflective of reasonable, responsible insurance practices. It is also not in keeping with AARP's professed mission and goals... For those seeking dental insurance coverage, BEWARE of this AARP offering!!

Visited my first visit with a Delta Dental provider. Good Lord, am I not satisfied with the experience and/or results. People were nice as subscribed by their profession... However, the above work was not performed according to DDS guidelines!!!! First visit: Cleaning, dental X-rays, consultation: Cleaning only consisted of brief ultrasonic on outside of teeth, no hand scaling for all 4 quadrants of teeth to be sure of full healing of gums. Polishing done very briefly on frontal areas of teeth.

DDS did not discuss the full diagnosis of X-rays taken of my teeth. Only discussed a slight discoloration on a previously porcelain filled frontal tooth to be discussed at another teeth cleaning set in July/2015. Is this the standard we are suppose to be exposed to or NOT? This is disgusting and something must be changed on the discretionary laws set forth on our Insurance Policies!!!

We purchased this dental insurance as part of signing up for insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace last year (2014). Our policy has been in effect and paid monthly now for 14 months and has never been used. I now have a need for a dentist and can't get an appointment. Delta said that if you call them after the 18th of a month to get an appointment, you have to wait more than a month before you have coverage. Called Jan 26th and was told I would not have coverage until March 1.

When I called in to get a provider they told me to call a dentist to make an appointment. I did -- got an appointment for Feb 5th. Called Delta back and then they called the dentist (one of their listed providers) and had my appointment cancelled. I am cancelling this insurance because it is USELESS. I read other complaints where it's said it's impossible to cancel an account. Thankfully I never signed up for auto payments so I will discontinue making any payments to this company.

Delta Dental provides the dental coverage for Tricare Reserve Retired military members. You would think that they would care about military members who spent their entire lives protecting this country, however they have 3 different phone numbers, all of which send you to a recorded message that does not give you the ability to speak to a live human being. If you press "0" (the typical way to get around these recorded messages) it says "That was not a valid entry, if you do not make a valid entry within 20 seconds this call will disconnect" then it hangs up on you.

I googled Delta Dental and called their main number in CA & spoke with a human that then transferred me to the eternal loop message. They have no email, and no way for military members to speak to a person. The humans at the main line, while very pleasant, are not able to access military accounts, nor are they allowed to give any information. I have been enrolled with them for less than 8 hours and this is by far the WORST company I have ever dealt with. But I cannot cancel because there are no humans to speak with, and I need dental insurance. This is not how any person should be treated, especially a veteran and 22-year service member.

Purchased Delta Dental PPO in Florida through exchange and compared plans and brochures carefully, and finally chose DDPPO for my family dental needs. We made these decisions based our family's needs for root canals, crowns, and implants. It specifically mentioned these services and stated that they paid. Unfortunately, they hid their information from me. After I had a crown on two teeth, they explained that I have to have insurance for a year before they will cover any extra procedures that were pre-existing. I understood that insurance companies could not discriminate on pre-existing conditions. So basically I'm paying a 170.00 a month in premiums to get my family's teeth cleaned and X-ray. This is the second year we have had insurance with them and not received any services.

All our dental insurance providers list all their exclusions in the plan brochure containing, except Delta Dental. Delta puts many of their exclusions in a second document that you, as a potential customer, have no way of knowing about. Even Delta's customer service didn't know about it! When they denied our claim due to what they called a "missing tooth clause," their CSR and her supervisor couldn't find such a rule, because they too were depending on the brochure! It took a couple of days for someone to call me back and tell me if there was another document. I believe this practice to be intentionally misleading. There is no reason not to place all exclusions in the plan brochure, as all our other providers do. At the very least, Delta Dental should provide a link to the additional exclusions.

Trying to get customer service is almost impossible if you have a need that is anything except to enroll. I am covered by Delta Dental of California under my wife's plan. I have also taken a supplemental Delta Dental plan through AARP. Per the rules for coinsurance, the coverage through the AARP plan is primary, and Delta Dental of California is secondary. Nevertheless, although Delta Dental of California is secondary, I am always charged the amount allowed by them for every service I receive, instead of being charged the amount allowed by my primary insurance, Delta Dental AARP. Therefore, the notice from AARP telling me how much I owe my provider for a given service -- after they have kicked in what they pay -- is always null and void.

The Secondary Insurer determines how much I owe my provider, and their amount is much higher than the primary insurer. Also, in the matter of cleanings, I am allowed two cleanings by the primary and two by the secondary. Two plus two equals four, right? Wrong! Two plus two equals two. Even though I am co-insured by different plans, each of which allows two cleanings annually. After I have received two cleanings neither plan kicks in anything -- and (once again!) the secondary insurer, Delta Dental of California determines how much I owe the dentist: 99% of what he bills!

I have a similar problem of trying to get payment on services originally promised over the phone when signing up for this insurance and deciding to have work done with the dentist. They directed me on the phone to providers on their website and I picked a dentist that they told me was a provider and was listed as such. When I had the work performed the insurance company billed it as a non-provider service. They paid me a couple of checks for 4 diff. NON provider services totaling about $200, which barely covered the bills. Months of phone calls and a grievance letter sent resulted in the continued denial that they made a mistake and I now owe close to $1,000 in bills to the dentist. Work done were fillings for 2 cracked teeth in the front of my mouth, broken crown and 2 annual cleanings for myself and my son. The annual cleanings were supposed to be 100 percent covered. Threatened them with a lawyer and still they still deny, deny, deny.

If you crack a tooth, need a crown, or need a root canal, it's out of pocket for you...normally around $950 per tooth. Even my dentist was shocked; he was sure they'd cover at least 50%. No way. When I retired I signed up for Delta Dental coverage through AARP. My wife continued on Cobra coverage for 18 months. When her Cobra coverage was about to run out, I requested what her premium would be if she had the same coverage as myself. I did not specify annual premium, but that is what I expected. They quoted me a price which I thought to be a reasonable annual premium, so she was added to my account in August 2013. Then I found out that the price quoted was just for the remainder of my term. I then cancel her coverage in November.

When I got my bill for 2014/2015 coverage it was basically double the previous year. I called customer service many times over several months and was told that customer service could see the cancellation but that my account had been lock in November and only someone from billing could access my account and correct the billing. I was also told to wait for the corrected billing before making my payment. However, I continued to get the incorrect higher billing and then threatening notice that my account would be canceled. Customer service was able to tell me what my bill should be, so I sent in a payment for that amount with a note.

Then my dentist office calls to tell me that my coverage for a normal cleaning was denied without explanation. After more calls I finally talked to someone with enough authority and smarts to find out that instead of canceling my wife, she was actually added on again as a dependent. She was able to straighten my account out and I actually had a credit due. That was another issue. You would expect that issuing a credit would be automatic. Not so. More calls and a letter from me did not get immediate results. Finally was told that I would be sent a check, but that it could take another four to six weeks. So they have two different policies from when you pay them and when they pay you. I received a check almost nine months after cancelling my wife from the policy.

When enrolling at healthcare.gov 3 months ago we selected our dental provider and the practice was listed as "in network". We never got sent an insurance card. Today the office told us they could not locate our coverage so we called Delta Dental and the representative confirmed we have coverage but they inadvertently had another provider listed as our primary provider. The representative agreed to fix it and fax the coverage information to our dental provider. So an hour later after my wife has been seen and received treatment we receive a call from the office saying they only participate with the PPO for Delta Dental and are not an HMO provider. My wife calls back and is told we will not be reimbursed by the insurance. Excuse me... what?

This is a true story of deceptive insurance practices to this point but it is not over... I will call them every day. It is a disgrace! I would like to thank the US government and healthcare.gov for finding new ways to help big business take advantage of the average US citizen. Now not only did my tax dollars pay for a big business bail out for banks and GM, credit card companies were allowed to increase APR on pre-existing purchases for no reason... but now companies can just take our money and deceive us.
